Solved: CHanged hardware... tells me it needs to activate but won't?

Q: Solved: CHanged hardware... tells me it needs to activate but won't?

Ugh this is more annoying than a real problem. I was running vista on a 512 meg ram machine that was locking up. I took out the HDD and placed it in a 1.5ghz ram machine. Of course different hardware yadda yadda yadda. The funny thing is it installed like a dream which I was not expecting. The ONLY driver it did not find on its own was a the video card and I made that change manually. Of course after all this on the next reboot it says multiple components were changed this requires reactivation. I tried to reactivate it and it failed. Sure enough each reboot it says reactivate but it never does but I am able to continue using it.
I know a rebuild will clean it all up but is there any way around this reactivation loop I seem to be in?

I just bought a new desktop that I've assembled. When I installed Windows 7 and entered my key, it refused to activate online later on. It said my key was invalid.

How can this happen? I thought I could use my license on one computer at a time, right? my old desktop isn't operating anymore.

I used to move between computers just fine with Vista. Not sure what's wrong here.

Any ideas?

I need to know a good program that tells me exactly what kind of hardware a computer has. Do you have any suggestions!?

A:A program that tells you what hardware you got!

In linux, the lspci utility can usually tell you 99% of what you need to know.

In Windows, I prefer AIDA32, a free diagnostics, benchmarking and identification utility.

I was given a computer to refurb, so I need to re-install all of the motherboard drivers and such. However I don't have any of the driver discs so I need to find them on the Internet. issue is that I can't get the ethernet card to work without the drivers, so I need a piece of software that will tell me what is installed on that computer, including the brand and model type, put it on a disc and run it on the other computer.

Any help would be appreciated.

A:Software that tells you what hardware you have?

PC Wizard should work for that kind of things.

I had a stock system from Dell (an inspiron 530)

[Windows Vista]
Intel E4400
Foxconn G33M02 (OEM motherboard)
2GB DDR2 RAM (upgraded to 4GB)
160GB Seagate HDD for OS
640GB WD HDD (additional) for Storage
NVidia 8600GT

Today I recieved my new Asus P5N-D [NVidia 750i chipset, second hand came with no driver CD =S ] and installed it. It booted up and then came to an error saying that a vital system driver was corrupted (acpi.sys)
I tried many things, like repairing with CD, booting into safe mode etc. but nothing worked (I was unable to enter safemode due to more system files being damaged/corrupt)

I decided to disconnect the WD HDD and wipe the other hard drive using [email protected] killdisk.
Killdisk ran and deleted the existing Windows partition so I could install a fresh copy of Vista.
When installing Vista from the CD a status bar appears with "Windows is loading files..."
When it reaches the end it reboots into an cycle that leads nowhere.

My guess would be that it is hardware or driver related and that I may have to change some BIOS settings, but I have no idea what is wrong or how to fix it.

Thanks in advance,

Tuesday 1-September (hello Football Season)

My Safely Remove Hardware Icon (in System Tray - Notification Area of Taskbar) has changed the way it was working.

For 5 years, when I clicked on the Safety Remove Hardware (SRH) Icon, I got a small skinny pop-up window immediately over the icon listing my USB devices by Drive Letter. I would click which device/drive letter I wanted to remove and it would unmount ! Simple & Quick (no Fuss - No Muss). See #1 jpeg.

Recently, clicking the Safely Remove Hardware icon has not produced the normal function shown in jpeg #1. Instead - the larger Safely Remove Hardware Dialog Box opens up - requiring a series of mouse clicks to select and unmount the USB device I want stopped. See jpeg(s) 2 & 3

How do I regain the way the Safely Remove Hardware icon worked as shown in jpeg #1 ?

Thanks for any help !

I am guessing this is an OEM win7 so when you changed the mobo, it is thinking you are using the version on a new computer. you might have to call, but maybe someone on here can lend a hand.

There is a department in Thailand though... Microsoft Worldwide Sites

Also are you going by these methods of activation? Activate Windows 7 on this computer

So, I need a precise answer to this as people are giving me alot of different answers on this. And the articples I read also give different directions. I own a retail key of Windows 10 I got from the Microsoft store last year. Will be getting a whole new computer in the coming week.

What is the appropriate way to make the key work with the new hardware? Do I just erase the key from my current computer with the command pompt and activate it again on the new computer? Or do I have to spend revulsive time with Microsoft support?

Uninstalling the product key via CMD is one way of removing that retail license from the old computer. Ideally, you should just wipe that licensed copy from the old computer since it doesn't make sense to keep an unlicensed copy anyway.

Sometimes Windows doesn't automatically activate after you transfer your RETAIL license from one computer to another, in which case, there's the option of activating via phone. If ALL else fails, you will have to phone Microsoft Support for assistance with activation.

Hi! I browsed the forum but I did not find this feature highlighted.

It is not a recent feature , it came with AU but I discovered it yesterday and not many people know this on other forums

So I want to give you a reason to use a MS account !

If you change even the MOBO, following this guide , you don' need to pay for another W10 license .

Spoiler: Guide
When you make significant hardware changes, such as replacing the motherboard or hard drive, Windows 10won't be able to identify your computer correctly, and as a result, the operating system won't activate.
Previously, if your installation of Windows 10 lost its activation due to a hardware change, you would have to go through the tedious process of contacting Microsoft customer support to re-activate, which is not an ideal solution.

However, Microsoft is now simplifying the process. Beginning with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, you can link your Microsoft account (MSA) with the Windows 10 digital license on your device. The new feature allows you to access the Activation Troubleshooter quickly to re-activate your free upgrade copy of Windows 10.

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll guide you through the process to link together your Microsoft Account and digital license, and the steps to use the Activation Troubleshooter to re-activate the operating system.

How to link your Microsoft account with the digital license

So about a week ago I bought a new CPU & mobo because my other ones died, and after I put the new parts in I have to activate windows again. I was given 2 options: ring a microsoft number and give them a long code over the phone or enter my product key i was given when I bought windows a few years ago. Putting in my product key doesn't work, and it prompts me to buy another (nope). I have just rung the number and given them my code and i got told i either need to buy a new product key or ring customer service and see if they can sort it out. Thought i'd try here first. Hello Sevenforums I apologize in advance if I posted this in the wrong area. Im having major issues re activating windows after a massive hardware upgrade. My copy of windows is genuine it was a retail upgrade from windows vista and I did the validation over 1 year ago. (Still have the box CD code etc.) It keeps telling me to activate windows 27 days remaining. Which Ive tried to do. It rejects my code Ive tried all known methods of activation. I've contacted support at Microsoft and got no help, the guy on the phone I could barely understand. I would be over the moon if somebody could give me a solution.

basic facts.

1.Only done 1 fresh re-install and 1 full backup of windows over the lifespan of the product key.
2.This was an upgrade copy designed for windows vista purchased from one of the largest retail stores in New Zealand.
3.My hardware is now completely new bar the hardrive, DVD writer & chassis.
4.All hardware has been installed correctly and has been burnt in

I can't see any problems with the report - you probably simply need to use telephone activation.

telephone activation (operator calls)
Click on the Start button
in the Search box, type

follow the instructions, but when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you

I recently changed out my motherboard from a board that supported only a Socket 478 1.7 GHz and USB 1.1 for one that supported a Socket 478 2.6 GHz processor and USB 2.0. The system is running XP Home.

Well after this change I booted my system the first time it would go to the splash screen and then reboot. This was followed by it going to the screen showing the option to boot in Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Last Good Configuration or Normally. I tried all the options and was sent back to previously described screen every time.

My only option was to put my XP Setup disk in and do a repair to XP. This worked but my problem is that I had Office and Frontpage installed on my computer. Now when I try and access them I get the following screen: see attachment.

Is there a way to get my Office and Frontpage programs to work short of digging out the original install disks and reinstalling them again.

Thank you in advance.

I just installed a new motherboard, CPU, memory, and video card into my computer. I'm not looking to salvage my old OS install, and have all important data backed up, so I planned to just put the hardware in and boot off my windows disk to do a format and reload. However no matter what I do I can't get windows setup or an OS to load. When loading the installer it locks up at the windows splash screen. I've tried booting off the hdd and it does the same thing. I tried it in safe mode and it locks up before it finished loading all the files. I also tried booting mini XP off my Hirens 15 disk and that locks up at the splash screen too.

So at this point I ran memtest to see if it was my ram causing problems but it all tested ok. So anyone got any idea on how to boot off my disk so I can format and reload?

A:Changed hardware, now won't boot off hdd or disk.

What windows installation disk do you have - is it a retail disk or a disk burnt from your previous recovery partition.

Also, for a test try to install a Linux distro - maybe Ubuntu and see what happens. Even a live CD may give you some insight.

Provided your hardware funtions properly, I suspect there is a driver problem. But that is not certain at this level of info.

I recentlly had a problem with my PC where when i turned it on the HDD light would just stay on and nothing would start or come up on screen (no beeps but all fans started). I purchased a new CPU (same model and speeds) to see if that was the problem and it still did it so i got a new motherboard (same model) and again still nothing. I changed the power supply with another i have on a PC i KNOW works and its STILL the same. I even used the power switch out of the other PC as well as trying with no ram and different ram but STILL the same problem. I dont understand how that can be possible when EVER part is different from that of what is in the computer. No HDD or sata or IDE drives were connected, no cards or anything but still the thing wont start.

New/different motherboard
New/different CPU
Different Ram
Different case & power switch
NO other cards or devices

So WHY is there STILL the same problem ????????

The stats of the PC are as follows

AMD Sempron 3000+
Asus K8V-VM Motherboard
1GB DDR400 Ram

Any help would be VERY much appreciated because i am COMPLETELY stumped on what the problem is when ALL the parts are different and i cant afford to be spending any more money on the system.

this is very confusing to me ive never seen it so i found a way back onto the internet by using a shortcut i had.

not even sure how to start this. i dont know exactly what i did but everything was changed. i was going to try to watch a movie thats on my laptop, it said 'avi' and when i clicked on it nothing happened. i dragged it into itunes to see if it would play there, nope. i right-clicked it, picked 'open with' VLC, still nothing. right clicked it again and chose windows media center, nothing happened. i tried transfering the folder with the option available in media center, still didnt play.

when i closed media center i saw all my desktop stuff was changed to open with media center, i knew immediatly i screwed up pretty bad somewhere. i right clicked internet explorer and changed it to open with internet explorer, it then changed everything to open with internet explorer. when i clicked on internet explorer it didnt open, but it did open the download bar as if i downloaded it. it says "Internet Explorer.Ink" or .lnk. when i click open, the window comes up but closes right away.

can someone help me by telling me how to get everything back to normal?

A:[SOLVED] changed one thing to open with a different application and it changed everyt

It sounds like what you've done is associate a .lnk file (shortcut type) with an application and now all shortcuts will run with that application. The avi file you were referring too may be just that as well: a shortcut.

This has also been known to be caused by a malware infection, in which case if you suspect it, you'll have to report it to our security team in the appropriate Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help subforum.

This may help with the situation.

Hi all-
Apologies in advance as I am not exactly technologically sound.
I tried plugging in my digital camera today, and though it did not come up, I hunted down the Removable Disk (E) drive, which I figured would open it. It told me that I had to choose a program to open it with, so I chose some kind of picture viewer. Then all the icons on my desktop turned into said picture viewer, and I cannot open anything but that program from the desktop. Also, when I go into Programs and try to open them, they don't work there either. Help!
I am using Windows 7. I have tried System Restore but it told me that it could not complete it and gave me some kind of error message with 0x80070005. It recommended that I turn off my protection or whatever to complete it, but I have Norton 360 and no idea how to turn it off!
Any help is greatly appreciated- we just bought this computer in November and now my husband is ticked off!

A:Solved: accidentally changed removable disk, now changed every program?

Welcome Tuckersmom !
When I connect my camera to either of our computers, the camera itself indicates on the viewer how to handle the pictures....
To replace the icons on the desk top, right click any empty place and select refresh, I think this should restore them for you.
My daughter uses Norton 360 and we have found that it disables the system restore. She does regular backups with Norton 360. If you have done that, you should be able to restore from one of those backups.

I wasn`t sure where this should be posted, but since it involves an unknown network, I figured I would start out by posting it here. Yesterday my internet went out in the middle of doing my average daily surfing(all sites I know are in good standing) when my internet suddenly went out. Later on that day, I went through the process of trying to get back online(turned off/unpluged power to modem, reset modem). When I turned my computer back on to see if I could get online, Comodo Firewall threw up a window telling me that it had detected that my computer has joined a new network and needs to know how to treat the new network according to my location. The IP address Comodo gave for the new network joined was Neither the wife or I know anything about setting up, or joining a new network, so it wasn`t anything done by us, and we are the only ones accessing our computers. As a side note, I ended up having to call AT&T to get back online, evidently there was an error in my line. I have run all my antivirus/malware programs, and they all show up clean. I would appreciate any thoughts on why our computers would be according to Comodo Firewall have joined a new network without us knowing. Running Windows XP Thanks for taking time.

A:Solved: Comodo Firewall tells me it has detected a new network

When your computer did not get a response from a Dhcp server (your ISP's assuming you are using just a modem) it assigned an APIPA (169.254.x.y) and that, of course, is a different network.

Hi All

I have used the free versions of Winamp for quite a long time without trouble and have upgraded as and when new versions became available.

I recently downloaded the 5.22 version and on attempting to access 'On Line Services' was given a message similar to "Sorry, the service you are trying to access requires an internet connection, please connect and retry" - Needless to say I was connected to the Internet at the time.

On re-installing the previous 5.21 version everything was OK.

Has anyone else had the same problem and do you have a possible solution, so I can use 5.22.

Many Thanks

I Purchased Win 7 Ultimate some months ago as a download. It activated properly, and has been very stable. I replaced my processor three days ago without incident - no messages about activation. Now I am getting the black screen and "Windows is not genuine" message. I tried entering the product code - no joy. So I called the number and tried phone activation - three times - at the end, it said "you cannot activate Windows today". There used to be a number to call to explain about hardware updates - but I cannot find it anywhere on their site. I tried system restore, and it didn't complete.

Any help anyone could provied would be greatly appreciated. I am not interested in paying for my copy of Windows again.

I'm having some real issues with my Dell XPS 400 and I'm desperately seeking help. I'm running WinXP Pro and this pc
is only about 16 months old. It has the original factory installed ram (1 gig) , a 320 gig hard drive and the processor is an
Intel ViiV. I have been getting a blue error screen with ***Hardware Malfunction - Call your Hardware Vendor for Support - Parity Check
/ Memory Parity Error - System was halted*** that lasted for a few hours. I had to hold the power button in for several seconds each time
to shut it down. I ran both the Microsoft Windows Memory Diagnostic tests, as well as the Memtest 86 , each several times. The results were always
"no memory errors". I attempted a few times, unsucessfully, using the F11 key to reach the Acronis recovery partition. I booted using my XP
disk but was unable to re-install. Windows would begin to load and then the blue screen with the same error message would occur. Finally,
I was able to access the Acronis recovery manager and restore my pc but on reboot it began to run ChkDsk. Now it keeps rebooting and running
a new disk check over and over and over..........................I have tried to cancel the ChkDsk using the keyboard but it keeps running. I'm at a loss, as to what else,
if anything I can do, (besides ripping my hair out by the roots)

My old post was closed as it seemed fishy and I totally understand that. Mods, you are just doing your job. I have a different question now. Since I wasn't able to activate Vista in time my desktop background is gone so it's all black. I thought I would be locked out of Windows or something but I can still use Chrome for internet and Skype for calls and Steam for games. What exactly did I lose by not activating in time?

A:Solved: Did not activate

Windows Vista
Windows Vista's penalty for failure to activate is much harsher that of Windows XP. After a grace period of 30 days, Vista enters "Reduced Functionality Mode" or RFM. Under RFM, you can't play any Windows games. You will also lose access to premium features such as Aero Glass, ReadyBoost or and BitLocker. Finally, an unactivated Vista will automatically log you out of the system after only one hour of use until you successfully activate it.Click to expand...

Hello All,

Thanks for the help in advance. What happened was that I reinstalled Windows XP Home on my parents' Compaq sr1575cl after adding in a Asus AH3450 graphics card, 2GB RAM, and changing out the PSU with a new Thermaltake one (I wanted to clean the comp of all the clutter after their years of use and make it a bit faster). After installation of the OS and drivers, the only thing is now, I cannot activate Windows with the product key that is printed on the M$ sticker on the computer.

I've tried to activate online, by telephone, and contacting HP/Compaq support to no avail. Is there any way to actually get a real life person from M$ to help? Any way to actually activate this thing? Or should I teach my parents Ubuntu instead?

My uncle's computer got a virus. We couldn't install or use antivirus software to fix it. So I'm just a novice with some computer experience.

All of their important data was transferred to a laptop running win 7. So I erased their hdd. They were not given a windows xp home disc with their custom built computer, just a product key sticker.

So I cloned my computer hdd to theirs. Now their computer starts up with win xp home sp3. But windows recognized the hardware had changed significantly and issued a message saying windows has to be activated in 3 days or it will stop working.

Should I:

1. Activate their copy of windows by internet? ( I doubt this option because it would register my product key which I am already using)

2. Activate their copy by telephone and give them the product key from the sticker on their tower?

3. Install win ME full version to their hdd and then use my win xp sp2 upgrade disc and enter the product key from their sticker?

4. Other?

I just replaced a hard drive on a Win7 machine, cloning the old drive to the new one, and it boots up fine, but tells me that Windows is no longer activated. I go through the process, but each time it tells me that the KMS server is unavailable. This machine was never in a "corporate" environment, so I don't know why it's doing this.

Is there a way (preferrably without reinstalling Windows!) that I can "force" the KMS stuff to go away, and activate directly with Microsoft? I have a valid key, just no way to activate.

A:Solved: Windows 7 won't activate

Update: Since I have a valid key and ISO file from when I purchased Win7 a few years ago, I thought I could just "burn" that to USB, using the Win7 tool, but for some reason that didn't work, even on two different computers (same ISO file, which may have been the problem).

I ended up purchasing a copy of Win8, and was able to "burn" that to USB, so I'm in the process of installing Win8 now. I figured if I'm going to be reinstalling Windows, may as well go with the current version. And for $15, I couldn't pass it up!

First off,my apologies if a similar thread exists, But I had no time, I'm using my personal PC for work and simply do not have time to search all the threads for another person with my exact problem; which is that I had to reinstall Windows XP Professional on my computer. The hard drive crashed, and the motherboard was going bad, so I replaced that as well, well apparently that was enough to have to reactivate the software. I have an OEM copy of XP SP1 that I've had since I built the PC back in 2003, and I lost the COA, so I went into the installation disc on a different computer and found the key, but upon entering it, the activation says that it's invalid. Just wondering if there's a more effective/elegant way to do this.

I have 2 sheets, Main and Invoice. When I switch to Invoice, I need to get the row of the last active cell on Main, as long as it's (a) not in the first 2 rows (b) not greater than last used row in col A.

MsgBox ActiveCell.Row in Worksheet_DeActivate (for Main) is no help, since it considers whichever cell is active on Invoice to be "the one". Similarly, MsgBox Sheets("Main").ActiveCell.Row in Worksheet_Activate() (for Invoice) can't find it's bearings.

So at the moment I'm stuck with cheating in Worksheet_Activate() for Invoice, as follows:

1. switch to Main
2. get row # of active cell, if in range
3. disable events (to avoid starting a cycle with ...)
4. switch back to Invoice
5. enable events

Anyone know of a better method? TIA,

(using win7 x64)

I used a program called "Types" to change a few file icons in windows. I did the same thing on a laptop but used a different program so I didn't get this problem. After I changed the default icon for .exe every exe program changed to the default icon I had selected. Not just the programs I already had on the computer but it uses the default icon for new programs downloaded and even ones viewed on disc. And it changed all shortcuts to the default icon.

I've been able to restore most of the shortcuts through the properties menu. Interesting thing is I have to do it twice on every icon since the first attempt seems to do nothing (and refreshing the desktop doesn't work).

I've downloaded additional icon programs that have a restore setting but that hasn't worked. I've tried a registry fix but that doesn't work. Neither has using the windows restore point. I've gone into the registry itself and changed around the default icon for the exe. Sure it'll change the icon but no exe programs with their own icons will return to their original state. My last attempt has been to delete the icon cache and that has also failed.

So now that google has let me down I'm hoping someone here can help me. A big thank you in advance cause this is really annoying.

I've got a client's HP notebook that cannot login because it can't activate. They called me when the notebook just hung at the blue Windows XP screen before displaying login. Everything is legal. I wound up getting their XP Reinstallation CD and doing a "Repair". I learned, too late, that I should have copied the WPA.dbl and .bak files. Since my wpa education, I've copied the wpa files off both of my XP machines in case of future repair!

Now, I can get to the login screen but can't, when I'm asked to activate. Without internet connection since repair, it just loops back to the login screen. I was able to get their data off and even do File & Settings Transfer Wizard in Safe Mode by running explorer from a command window.

Question: Won't I have the same activate issue if I do a complete XP re-install and File & Settings Transfer Wizard back to the new install? Any other ideas that might be helpful? I've got another client notebook with different issues that I may post later if I can't find forum help.

In desperate need of tech help!!

A couple of weeks ago, when I booted up my laptop, it was unable to access its Windows XP Professional, even in Safe Mode. At that time, I was advised that the only solution would be to reinstall my Windows XP from the original installation disk.

Unfortunately, the only Windows installation disk I have is from an earlier Gateway computer, since Microsoft has made the regrettable decision to no longer provide their customers with the software installation disks for new computers.

The good news is that I was able to reinstall Windows XP from that disk(although it's the Home version), and was able to update it with all the appropriate Service Packs by going online. The bad news is that, as I tried to re-activate my Windows XP, Microsoft would not accept the original activation code, and all they would tell me is that they no longer provide support for Windows XP.

As far as I'm concerned, this is completely unacceptable, since I paid for the program when I bought the Gateway computer, and it seems to me this is nothing but a scam on Microsoft's part to force customers to buy newer versions of Windows.

Anyway, I have about 12 days left to activate my version of Windows XP, otherwise I will have to wait until I can afford to buy a newer version of Windows before I can even use my computer.

Does anyone out there have any suggestions for solving this problem?

Microsoft is ending all support for Windows XP in Arial of 2014, so I am surprised they are starting early.

On the PC itself do you see the Windows XP sticker that holds your key?

Did you try to active over the phone?

Do not buy a new version of Windows and install it on this machine, I doubt you will be able to find drivers for a Windows XP system.

I am so frustrated with this problem. I have been working with two of the BigFishGames Tech people and they can't seem to figure it out. This is what they said the problem was:

We've been working on this issue, troubleshooting and testing ideas, and unfortunately, we seem to be a bit stuck right now. I do have a bit more information since we last spoke though. If you notice on the "dxdiag" report in the Dr Felix Results file you sent us, the information for system manufacturer, model and BIOS in the first section is missing. In almost all cases of this error, this has been a common occurrence.
It looks like this:
System Manufacturer: n/a

The reason that info isn't in your dxdiag file is because of a problem with WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation). Windows Management Instrumentation is an infrastructure behind Windows that handles operations and sends data to different parts of the system. WMI provides info about your computer to the dxdiag report, which is how we were able to determine where the problem was coming from. The fix file I sent was supposed to correct errors with WMI, but although it works for some people, unfortunately, at the point we're at now, WMI is a bit too in-depth for what we can do, since it's a part of Windows programming. If you have an opportunity, it might be a good idea to talk to Microsoft's support to let them know that there may be a problem with WMI on your computer.... Read more

A:Solved: BigFishGames won't activate or play

I am not a computer wiz,
But I did have the same warning and I could not load any games from BigFish.
I have Windows OS.
I realized after some searching, that my .Net Framework was corrupted, so I downloaded fresh copies free of .Net Framework from Microsoft online versions Framework 2 and Framework 3.
I then uninstalled all previous framework versions on my computer, and the patches for each using the free Net Framework Cleanup Tool.
I reinstalled the fresh copies and it fixed the issue. I hope this helps you too.

The computer I'm working on now prompts me that Windows needs to be activated every time I boot the machine. As this machine will be for resale, I have activated Windows but not registered. Is this the problem? I want the new owner of this machine to be able to register his or her own name. At least it does activate at each boot. Thanks. Still looking for an answer to "My first HJT log" thread posted earlier. Thanks to all.

Hello Everybody.

I am using Eudora (old version from 2006) since many, many years (1995). I use it with Gmail, and use POP to download my emails to Eudora. This always works fine.
This evening, while watching videos online, I heard beeps from Eudora, but didn't take notice. When I started to download mails some hours later, I got the message from Eudora: ERR[AUTH]Username and password not accepted.

That is very strange. The only thing I can remember that I have done since the last successful incoming mails from Eudora yesterday (I did read my mails on, is: 1. changing my password for another gmail account, which I am not using for Eudora; 2. Opt out on Google accounts for personalized ads; 3. Activate the 2-way verification option on Google accounts that every time I log in, I need to enter a code sent to my mobile phone. (I did this because people from Asia have been overtaking my 2 Gmail accounts and Skype account).

Personally I started thinking that this was a punishment from Google for opting out of their personalized ads.
I changed nothing in my Eudora settings. How come I get this error message? I really didn't understand it.

Ooh ... okay, while writing this I am thinking about the fact that I turned on the 2-way verification option. I just turned it off ... and I am downloading my mails right now. Smart idea Google!

I've been looking for a way to immediately activate Windows 2000 screen saver using a shortcut. I used to be able to use the command "osa9.exe -s" by putting that into a shortcut, then just double-clicking on it (actually, I had a shortcut key ("hotkey") inside that link; much faster.) but that is not working on my new install of Windows 2000. Does anyone know the name of the main file that activates windows screen saver?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Hi, I searched around before I posted but I didnt see any thread about my particular issue.

About a month ago I was having some issues with viruses, which is where I assume this problem originated (thus I posted it in the Security forum)

I dont have alot of time right now so I'll try to make this quick and I'll look at replies later...

Basically, everytime I try to start System Restore I get this error:

Ive tried re-activating it via the services program (under the admin tools in control panel)

It dosent work. Ive heard people talk about getting system restore working by going to the properties under My Computer, but I dont see ANYTHING there about system restore at all (and I ave throughly checked ALL the tabs)

I need to get this working again because im going to download/install SP2 soon, last time I tried this, my computer screwed up and I had to use system restore to get it working again, and as system restore is not working right now, I'd really prefer not to take the chances and might have to reformat my hard drive or some other extreme measure...

Ive already tried virus scans and the such, but nothing seems to be working. If anyone can help me fix system restore, or perhaps point me to some program that may be a good alternative or something, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Oh, and heres my Hijack this file - just because I assume it will be on of the first things people ask for...

I have a Compaq laptop 32 bit running on Vista Home Basic. I have set my screen saver to 'kick in' after 100 minutes, that way I can watch a catch up movie or a lengthy video on You Tube. After approximately 15 minutes (if I don't remember to move the mouse) the screen goes blank, then I have to move the mouse to get the screen back. Sometimes the movie starts with no sound and no matter what I do, I can't get the sound back. I then have to close the movie down and start all over.
Any help you can give, will be most appreciated.

So I'm trying to set up the new computer my mom got with Windows 8.1. It's not going well. But that's my problem and not your guys.

I can't seem to find the Microsoft Security Essentials that you guys told me about to use for my virus protection. When I started the computer, it had McAfee on it. However, I'm pretty sure it's just a trial program that won't last long.

If someone could please help me find Microsoft Security Essentials and how to activate it, I would really appreciate it.

I would really appreciate any help anyone here could give me.

Thank you.

Because of all the problems between IE and Adobe Flash Player re virus infections, I chose to stick with IE and uninstall Adobe Flash Player. Now I want it back in order to upload a Kindle manuscript to Amazon. So, I downloaded & installed the latest version. It appeared to work, but it doesn't show up in my list of programs. It does show in the list of programs that can be uninstalled. ?!? The problem is, Amazon doesn't recognize that it is now installed. I tried some other sources in FaceBook (UTube, etc.) and they didn't recognize that I have it installed either. How can I make it work? I have IE 11.09 installed, and now AFP 14.

A note to moderators:
I am not looking for help cracking a password. I am looking for help understanding why a password prompt is appearing, in other words, what might I have done wrong during setup or maybe what I might do during Windows 7 installation to prevent this happening again.

A caution to those who may reply:
Avoid posts that deal with how to crack or otherwise bypass a password.
Now to the problem:
I have tried both of the following methods to activate the Administrator account in Windows 7. The Admin account comes up on the windows log-in screen; but, it is asking for a password. Problem is I just minutes ago finished setting up this Windows 7 Ultimate on a new, out-of-the-box hard disk and I did not give the Admin account a password.

Command-prompt Method:
Right-clicked the command prompt in the program list and chose "Run as administrator".
Entered the command below and pressed enter to activate it:
net user administrator /active:yes
It returned "Command completed successfully"

Security Policy Snap-in Method:
Right-clicked the command prompt in the program list and chose "Run as administrator".
Typed secpol.msc in the Command window and pressed enter. The Local Security Policy snap-in appeared.
Went to Local Policies> Security Options where I saw an entry that read "Accounts: Administrator account".
Double-clicked the entry and selected the "Enable" radio button.

I just got a new Sony Vaio laptop and every time I turn it on, I have to go through the VAIO CARE RESCUE screen, exit out of it, and then Windows will eventually start...

How do I just deactivate it, as opposed to erasing it completely?

Thank you!

A:[SOLVED] How do I de-activate 'Vaio Care Rescue' at start-up?

Hi -

If the Vaio screen shows up after logon to Windows, use SysInternals AutoRuns to disable it. Download from Microsoft TechNet -

Save to Documents. RIGHT-click on AutoRuns.exe, select "Run as Administrator"; allow it to scan registry (status screen on bottom-left). Look for Vaio Care Rescue and un-check the box.

Given brand new system, follow instructions in owner's manual to burn a set of Sony Windows 7 Recovery DVDs.
