Hello, I recently purchased Dell XPS 8700 that came with a 2tb harddive formatted with GPT. The computer came with Windows 8, and I wanted to downgrade to Windows 7. However the windows installer wouldn't install on any of the current partitions, so I deleted every partition with gParted and proceeded to install Windows 7 successfully onto the one giant partition. Since I deleted all the GPT partition information (Idiotically), I am unable to make more partitions and dual boot.

So my questions are: Is my harddrive as of right now in MBR or GPT? And how would I add the GPT partitions back, as in the primary and secondary GPT headers?

Edit: I am attempting to dual boot with Xubuntu 14.04 and Windows 7 Professional, both 64bit and the computer has the UEFI, I think. Am I better off using MBR or GPT to dual boot? I only want two OS's and a shared data partition.

A:Deleted all the GPT Partitions by accident

Quote:

Deleting all GPT partitions is a recommended step to downgrade "Windows 8" as "Windows 7" is known to not much liking GPT based UEFI boot mode. Although "Win 7" 64 bit edition may boot from a GPT disk, i prefer MBR partitioning especially in case of dual booting with Linux. The only mistake you made here is not to partition the disk at the time of install. Fortunately you can split the single large "C" partition to two or three small partitions with the help of "Partition Wizard" free edition.
Download link : Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition.
What you need to do is first shrink/resize "C" and create one or more new partitions using the free space.

I have a 2TB external hard drive and a 1TB external hard drive.
I got a new 2TB internal hard drive and was installing Windows on it.
On the screen where it showed the connected drives, I stupidly forgot the 2 external drives were still connected. I thought somehow it was breaking up the new 2TB internal drive into 3 separate partitions. I clicked on the two external drives and deleted the partitions because I thought it would merge them. I DID NOT format luckily.
I am in the middle of running the Analyzer using TestDisk on the 2TB external. Since it is a 2TB hard drive, it is analyzing about 10% of the disk per day. So I guess it will take 10 days to finish. Small price to pay if I can recover all the data on these drives. One has all our home movies and photos and the other has all our scanned documents in PDF format. Sigh.
I am wondering if I am doing this the right way with TestDisk? Is there a faster way? When I deleted the partitions, the process took less than a second. The drives were partitioned to used 100% of the drive space. I read the page TestDisk Step By Step but still not sure if there isn't an easier way for my particular blunder. Nothing should be corrupted. Just deleted.
Thank you!

A:Deleted Partitions By Accident Please Help

Yes it should be faster. I thought there were two levels to the restore deleted partitions and only the deeper level involves scanning the surface for old deleted partitions.

There is a backup copy in C:\Windows\System32\dllcache

most of the time it is compressed in this folder.

Here is a copy of it from my XP installation (uncompressed)
See attached
You will need a XP install CD and use recovery environment to copy the file to the proper place, or use an Ubuntu boot CD to do it.

Here is an article on using a Ubuntu CD to copy data off an unbootable windows PC, one could also use it to copy a file to a Windows folder.

I just deleted an email in Outlook 2007 by accident & now I cant find it in any of my trash folders?

But for some reason it doesnt look like my trash folders are synced up with my godaddy account?

But I looked for the email on the godaddy server & it wasnt in my inbox on their cloud mail client either?

A:Just deleted an email by accident, now I cant find it?

I don't know anything about godaddy, but do they have a spam folder? Chances are that it isn't there either, otherwise your client wouldn't have received it. Do you have the client set to leave the messages on godaddy? If so, either the client or godaddy is haywire. If in neither place, I would say that it is gone, unless you use a file recovery program to search for it.

Hey Guys I screwed up as follows:

I was fooling around with my graphics drivers and accidentally deleted them. A screen popped up to reboot the computer. It rebooted.

Now whenever I restart my computer, first a microsoft screen appears, then it appears to load but I have no on-screen visual as i get a monitor error message (Not Optimum Mode, Recommended 1920x1200, 60Hz), I am therefore unable to download and install any updated drivers.

What Can I do to restore my Drivers or at least get a visual to Re-install them?

I'm running Windows Vista, and one of the newer NVidia Graphics Cards.

I believe you'd need to boot into safe mode in order to get the resolution down, or at least that's the easiest way I can think of. Boot into safe mode and allow as much as possible, try installing your drivers from there.

Ok, so i deleted the 'desktop' folder by accident from the My Documents window (or just above my documents folder)...

Now the 'Desktop icon' at the top of the folder list shows a different set of shortcuts/folders (incl. RecycleBin, Network etc etc)... the now 'yellow' desktop folder that is under the 'user' is messed up.

I've attached 2 screen shots because i'm sure my explanation is poor. Anyway, this is driving me crazy - can't figure it out. I've been messing around with it for hours - at one point i had 'desktop' with about 15 'desktop' subfolders......

help! please!

Good afternoon,
Hopefully someone has experienced this and can offer advice.

A user is deleting files, but they are not appearing in the recycle bin

- user is deleting from her computer, and not a network location, or flash drive
- computer is not partitioned - only has a "C" drive
- computer is W7 32-bit
- user is not a local admin
- Use has 6 different recycle bins (right-click on RB desktop icon > properties > recycle bin location); some of the locations are "My Pictures", "My Videos" etc.... We are not able to manage the size of
these locations.
- all of the RB locations are set to "Custom Size"
- have tried:
a. deleting everything out of the RB
b. (running as admin) RD /S /Q C:\$Recycle.bin
c. set to view hidden & system files/folders, gone to "C" and deleted the $RECYCLE.BIN folder. clicked yest at all the prompts, including: Do this for all current items

** after both b & c, rebooted the computer

So far, nothing has worked. Might anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks!

A:Recycle Bin: deleted items not appearing in recycle bin

Hi jkotsonas, welcome to seven forums.

Not sure if this is your issue, but with different users, each will have his/her own recycle bin and as such, items from one user won't show in another user's bin.

Is this the issue?

The best place to start would be to visit the dell support site, navigate to your product page and see if you can download the latest drivers from there. Reinstalling from your recovery drive would probably overwrite a lot of files that you want to keep.

Hi toybird

Sorry for the delay in getting a reply to you (been busy). Any luck yet finding a solution?

If not, try these for a quick repair
1) System Restore
2) Uninstall StyleXP
3) Run a Registry Cleaner (CCleaner is effective).
4) Reinstall StypeXP

. . . and anytime you have unexpected system behavior, run some malware scans to rule out unexpected visitors causing havor with your system files.
_____________

To try System Restore:
1) Boot your computer into Safe Mode (start tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up, and select "Safe Mode" from the Boot Menu).
2) Logon as "Administrator".
3) Click on Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore, and select a restore point from before trouble started.

Try CCleaner to clean up
1) You can download CCleaner here --- http://www.download.com/CCleaner/300...-10315544.html
2) Run the "Cleaner" functions to clean up temp files & other accumulating unnecessary files. Then run the "Issues" functions to clear up problems in the Registry. Run the "Issues" functions until CCleaner reports "no issues found."

Best of luck

I accidently deleted the Administrator file and need to know how to get it back where the Owner file is. I moved the file from the Recycle bin by click and hold and moved to desktop. I know I should have restored. Now it has the desktop as its routing (I can't think what else to call it). I can now log on if the error message that says "microsoft cannot log on" stays on the screen long enough to click OK. If the screen does not stay the computer trys to boot up (I guess) but will not do anything until the screen times out and I press a key; than the "microsoft cannot log on" error message will come up and I click OK. Than a screen appears that shows the Owner and I click on it and every thing works all right. I would apprciate any help. Let me know if I need to explain more.

When trying to reformat the inspiron I accidently used the xps recovery and reformat disk to try to reinstall everything on the insiron. Guys I took a hard drive out of a macbook pro and placed it into a external enclosure. I connected it to my pc running vista and I was copying the files from the macbook pro onto my pc and by accident I hit the delete button.

The folder that I deleted is still in the recycle bin, well at least I can see it but the size of it is over 2 gb. I tried to just restore it but that is not working. Thing is I do not need the entire folder just maybe 100 mb of some files that are inside which is just pdf and documents. Any idea on what I can do? Hi... I have a Dell Laptop which is running Windows 7. Whenever i try to delete something, the dialogue box asks "would you like to permanently delete this file?" and seems to totally bypass the recycle bin.

I tried right clicking the recycle bin icon to change properties. The options for "Custom size" and "Don't move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted" are UNCHECKED but are also both greyed out and cannot be changed! "Display delete confirmation dialog" is not grayed out, and is checked.

Also my C: drive doesn't have the Recycle.bin folder. I tried to fix the Recycle bin settings from command prompt by running : rd /s /q C:\$Recycle.bin. But still after restarting the computer the recycle.bin folder was not there.

Is there any fix for this?

I'd suggest first backing up your registry. Read the directions for this free tool in order to do that: http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/Then, copy the stuff inside the code window below:Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}]
@="Recycle Bin"Create a new text document and paste the above copy into it. Save it with a .reg extension (ie Recycle.reg) - then double click on it and let it merge into your registry. This should restore the Recycle Bin entry in your registry.I got the basics for this tip from here: http://forums.techguy.org/3507876-post2.html

I recently had my computer upgraded from Windows 2000 to Windows XP. Ever since it has been upgraded, all deleted files are not going to the recycle bin. The recycle bin is empty after I delete files. I tried going to properties>global to see whether "do not move files to the recycle bin" is unchecked. It is unchecked, so I'm not sure what else to do.

Is there anything I can do to restore the function of my recycle bin?

4. Maximum size of Recycle Bin (percent of each drive) has been tweaked to 100%

When some files or directories are deleted by mistake and immediately realizing mistake I try to restore them from Recycle Bin, I find not all but only a few available. There is no chance of deleted data being overwritten by newer files.

I need help for proper tweak or software to ensure all files go to Recycle Bin.

I am running xp pro. I have a workgroup set up at home and on one of my desktop computers is a shared folder called POSTOFFICE. In this folder I have 5 gigs of school stuff saved. I did a clean install of xp pro on my laptop and I wanted to copy all my files over from POSTOFFICE to my laptop. So I created a shortcut of the shared folder POSTOFFICE on my laptop desktop and then copied the folder out of POSTOFFICE to my laptop's desktop as well. The files I copied was named backup. So on my laptop's desktop I have a shared folder now named POSTOFFICE and another folder named "backup" I didn't want the folder that I just copied over from POSTOFFICE to my laptop in the POSTOFFICE anymore since it would be taking up the 5 gigs on the computer sharing the POSTOFFICE folder. So I went into POSTOFFICE and right-click deleted the folder named backup. But the problem is the folder named "backup" that I had copied from POSTOFFICE to my laptop's desktop dissapeared as well. I looked in the recycle bin on both computers, my laptop and the one sharing the POSTOFFICE folder and nothing was there to restore. I also searched for the "backup" file on both with no resualts. Does anyone know what happend. If so I would so very greatly appreciated your help. I NEED these files back. Thanks to any and all.

Hello!

I had to reformat my hard drive in April due to a virus problem. I had a tech guy from Geeks on Call walk me through it and used all the proper CDs and necessary drivers according to him and Dell technical support both.

On a side note, Dell Technical Support is a nightmare. Geeks on Call was great though.

Anyway I am not pressing shift-delete. The "do not move files to recycle bin" box is not checked in the recycle bin's properties. It is set to take up to 100% of the drive if necessary. I currently run AVG, Ad Aware, and Spybot religiously as well as having Spybot T-Timer running at all times.

The Dell people said to reinstall Windows after a two hour chat session. Since reinstalling windows (following all directions, mind you) is what got me into this mess I would rather not do that. I do back up my data to an external hard drive but it still took me forever to get my laptop up and running after reformatting.

Nothing appears in the recycle bin- not when I use the delete key, not when I right click and select delete, not when I drag the files to the recycle bin.

I use Windows XP, I have done the service pack 2 thing, and this is all on a Dell Inspiron 8500 laptop.

Help?

When I delete files or shortcuts, they go to my Recycle Bin. The Recycle bin has an icon indicating there are items in it. When I click on the Recycle bin and open it, the deleted files show up for a second or two then disappear. So at this point I'm unable to select and restore deleted files. They are still in the recycle bin, since if I right click on the recycle bin it asks me do you want to delete # items.

I've checked the Recycle Bin properties, and it doesn't have the delete files immediately option selected. My folders properties are set to show all files and file extensions.

Any ideas?

To use the file: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

The website claims that this file will replace and\or repair the registry values for your recycle bin. The Firefox browser will not work when downloading the recycle bin patch. You will have to use Internet Explorer browser.

This patch is only for Windows XP.

My recycle bin in XP is not displaying files that I deleted. It says that it has 10 items when I try to empty it. But it is stuck at having 10 items and not able to see the files that has been deleted. Each time I empty the bin it keeps showing and asking to delete 10 items, i do, it sounds like it works, but i repete and its the same thing over and over again. The Do not move files to the recycle bin has not been checked in The properties of recycle bin. So that is not the problem.
When I delete anything else, it dose delete from the harddrive.
Is there any way to replace the recycle bin program or fix it? How do I fix this problem? Thanks

Help ! When I delete a doc or file, it does not appear in my recycling bin. There is nothing unusual about the bin properties and I have not selected 'remove files immediately when deleted'. Can anyone suggest a fix?

A:Files deleted not appearing in Recycle bin

How much space do you allot for recycle bin? You have to allot an amount of space for recycle bin on the hard drive, much like with a page file. If you right click on recycle bin and go to properties, it will tell you what %, and if you click on the tabs for each drive individually, It will tell you what numerical value.

If the files you are deleting are bigger than the amount of RB space left empty on the drive, the system prompts you to delete them altogether and then does so if you choose yes.

C:\RECYCLER\Desktop.ini
Click Red X to delete it or Simply Browse to the Directory under C:(root) called RECYCLER

In killbox you may also see in blue the term Directory
Click the Red X to delete it.

Reboot and see if that works. Windows will recreate that file on reboot. If this doesn't work...then it's likely the INFO file may be damaged. Read here on how to fix that...

Windows 7-SP1

This is only happening on my internal data drive ( E: ), system drive ( C: ) and external drives ( F:, G & H: ) are OK.

If I delete up to 6 items in a single operation (folders, files or a mixture) the items show up in the recycle bin. But if its 36 then 30 items will not be in the recycle bin, and the 6 that are there are not the first or last 6. If its 80 items then 74 wont be in the recycle.bin etc, etc, If I delete 200 items in a single operation from the C: drive then all 200 will be in the recycle bin.

Weird. I tried creating a fresh $recycle.bin on E: (by removing it), that didn't fix it.

This drive also contains E:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-117609710-2025429265-682003330-1004 which I believe is the recycle bin contents. If I remove this directory will windows create a fresh one?

I ran chckdsk on the drive in mid-May no errors reported and SMART say its healthy, anyway its not a hardware issue.

A:Can't recover items deleted from recycle bin

Hi HammerJeff Unfortunately, there's never a guaranteed way to recover a file that you deleted. When you delete a file, you have to be sure that you'll never need it back, because the chances of getting it back are really slim. Free data recovery software can only do so much, and none of them even guarantee that they'll recover anything and if they do, it won't be 100% of what was deleted. The same goes for paid software. If that client had important business files that are critical for his job, one solution could be to go to a data forensics company and get them to retrieve the deleted files from the drive. Assuming that no other major read/write operation has been done on the drive that could have completely ereased the trace of these files, they may be able to recover them. However, these kind of services are quite expansive so I hope for your client that if he pays for them, it's worth it.On a side note, the free software I use for data recovery are Recuva, EaseUS Data Recovery and GetDataBackNTFS (there's a portable version made from the paid version). If these fails, I usually tell the person that there's nothing more I can do.Good luck with that client and the case.

A:RESTORING DELETED DOCUMENT FROM RECYCLE BIN

I assume you emptied your recycle bin Many users including myself have had success with Recuva. It is well worth a shot and should be attempted A.S.A.P

After seeing a couple files permanently delete at unseasonable moments, I now at least enabled deletion confirmation messages. The bug is with the HDD I use for storage, the SSD hosting the OS works according to the recycle bin settings. I tried the classic subterfuge of switching these settings back and forth for both drives, without success though. This is a new installation of 8.1 Pro for me and I think making deletion without confirmation the default behavior was bad move.

A:Deleted files don't go to recycle bin in one of the drives

Was the allocated space perhaps not enough?

Somehow, beyond me, I've deleted every Word Document in my My Documents file. I quickly checked my Recycle Bin to recover those items, when I found that there is nothing in my Recycle Bin! Then, I ended up pasting every deleted item on my desk top...but, it won't let me open any of these documents. An error message states: "Problem with Shortcut: The item that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly. Do you want to delete this shortcut?"

If anyone has any idea of how to recover these items, it would definitely and most certainly be appreciated!!!!!!

I had a bunch of pictures that I deleted on accident, and then emptied my recycle bin. How can I get them back? I know about using programs such as yodot and disk digger, but when I use them It finds literally thousands of pictures that I am not looking for. Is there an easy way to go about doing this? Or are there any programs any of you recommend to be best for something like this?

Thanks

A:Recovering pictures deleted from recycle bin

Recuva does a good job !
You can sort by file format, name, location, time... if you use "Advanced mode".
This should give you a better chance of finding the right files.

Success !

I deleted all my music acidently is there any way to recover it.      Dum  i know.

A:wIndows 10 i deleted all my music in the recycle bin.

If you only deleted them and emptied the Recycle Bin, you can recover them with a data recovery software like Recuva. You see, Windows doesn't actually delete files when you empty the Recycle Bin, they just "disappear" from the computer but are still recoverable by third party software. After a very long time though, those deleted files get overwritten by new files when the hard drive gets filled up and are never seen again.
