I have a Toshiba Satellite P745. When I close the lid the fan stays on and so does the light for the power button, then when I open the lid the screen stays blank and the computer doesn't start. I have to then manually power it down and it then works fine. Some other information when the laptop first starts it asks me if i want to use windows 7 or perform a system restore, then the screen that tells you your computer didn't shut down right (the screen that gives you the option to run in safe mode) and then it starts fine. It also once in awhile makes a weird clicking noise in the bottom right corner. I have tried taking out the battery and that didn't work.
Thanks for the help

A:fan running with lid closed, but blank screen when lid opened

Some advanced power setting changes are possibly needed.

A "clicking noise" is usually not a good sign and may indicate the hard drive is dying.

A:laptop screen goes black when i restart, and screen wont wake up after it turns off

Boot the computer and press F8 in the Advanced Boot menu choose Last Known Good Configuration.
What is the make and model# of the computer? Go to the manufactures support/download drivers site and download the Chipset and the Video driver for the computer.
Go to Start/Search and type powercfg.cpl. Right click the powercfg results and Run As Administrator. Click Change Plan Settings/change Advanced power settings. Reset your power settings to your liking.

hi,hopefully somebody can help me with my problem.

I have a Panasonic Toughbook Cf-29, System a 512 MB and 80 GB. It has a intel pentium processor 1200MHZ.

My computer was having some problems before it got messed up. As long as the computer was on the internet ever 15 or 20 min a audio advertisement would pop up out of no where. There was no window to exit it out and i also tryed CTRL+ALT+DEL and it would show no window was up.Also everytime id go to google.com and search something it would redirect me to another web site.

Well i was on my computer today and it froze so i restarted it.
The blue Panasonic screen comes up and then a solid black screen comes up and nothing after that.

I tryed F8 and clicking "Last knowin good configuration" and after the screen turns black but the computer is still on because the light is green.

i tyed safe mode also and it stops going at:
Windows/system32/drivers/isapnp.sys
and then it wont go any further than that.

i also tryed debugging mode and the black screen comes up and nothing after that.

I tryed putting the system recovery disk(1 of 3) in but nothing comes up. For some reason the disk never starts up,even when its working..I can go to "my computer" and it says recovery disk and once i click on it theres tons of folders in there but for some reason it never works...

try updating your bios/firmware and also if that dont work then go into bios on startup (if possible) then reset to manufacturer defaults

You can try a sytem restore to before the problem occurred. If this doesnt work for you re-install may be required.

Boot off your recovery disk, and see if it has advanced recovery utilities. You will be looking for System restore. If not, try this (one moment while I pull up the tutorial for creating advanced recovery utility disk.

Follow Instructions provided for creating Recovery Disk. You will then place the recovery disk in drive, restart, at "hit any key to boot from disk" hit a key, and boot into recovery disk. Click System Restore. Follow prompts to restore to a point Before the problems occured. DO NOT USE REGISTRY CLEANERS!, and install a top of the line antivirus/antimalware program, and I recommend using Windows Defender also.(malware may be part of your problem)

Create a Vista recovery Disk to Access Sytem Recovery options

Both of these programs are top of the line:Vista SP1 Antivirus Performance or:New NOD32 4 & Smart Security 4 Released!!!

I purchased a new computer a little over a week ago, and installed a new copy of Vista on a new hard drive. Ever since, I've been having nothing but problems trying to get Vista to actually work and run stable. The system will usually run great for a day or two, then I'll get all these random errors out of nowhere, taking forever to start up, being stuck on "Configuring Update" screens, countless blue screen errors, or start up errors (corrupt files, failed to shut down, etc). I've had my system restore points dissapear. When I'd run Vista disk to do a start up repair, my HD would no longer show up as it use to before. Basically, I've reformatted and reinstalled Vista 4 times. I came across a fix for the "Configuring Updates" problem, which was the first problem I came across. Now, every time I reformat Vista, I make sure to turn Automatic Updates to inform me when I need updates, but not to download/update it automatically, I'll just do it manually. However, one fix leads to another problem, and I'm really at a loss on what to do.

I just reformatted for the 4th time yesterday. A clean install, installed my motherboard and videocard drivers, downloaded and installed SP1 (I came across a couple of blue screen errors supposedly, I wasn't around when they happened, just saw a box telling me they occured). I have Automatic Update turned to inform me, but not to automatically download and install updates. I installed Avast antivirus, Ad Aware, a PC videogame, ... Read more

A:Vista wont load (stuck on black screen)

Bump. I guess I'm just going to end up reformatting again, I don't know what to do. Trying to access anything else (regular start up, safe mode start up, vista disk system repair, etc) all just seem to get stuck on a black screen or take forever, and as I said, I really have no idea if the computer is actually doing anything, or if it's just stuck. Is there a guide I should be looking for, to give me any ideas of how to run a stable Vista? If I reformat this again, everything will be fine and dandy for a day or two, then the problems will start rolling in. I don't know how to prepare for or combat this.

My laptop is a Acer aspire 5738z running windows 7 home premium 64 bit and my problem is my laptop will not start. When I turn my laptop on it starts to run like normal: GPU fan starts, Disk drive kicks in, and the LED for the on button is working but nothing on the screen. I've tried too do alt + f10 for a restore, nothing happened. I've also tried to plug it into a monitor and my tv. Before this occurred it had been turned off during boot (don't ask why, I cannot answer that) and I preceded to take it apart(to fix the overheating issue due to acer not putting fan holes on the bottom of the laptop ((thanks Acer -.-)) and I didn't realise something was wrong with it until I reassembled it and tried to turn it on. So I'm not sure whether is corrupt BIOS, a hardware problem, or corrupt MBR (my own personal diagnosis, don't know whether it's right or not). Also I have tried turning the laptop off taking the battery out letting the motherboard discharge then pressing the power button for a minute, leaving it for a minute, putting the charger in then turning it on.

Thanks. =]

A:Laptop wont boot Black screen no BIOS

You may need to take it apart again and make sure everything is connected properly. Did you follow steps to keep yourself grounded while working inside the system?
As you add and remove hardware, follow these steps for ESD safety:Shut down and turn off your computer.
Unplug all power supplies to the computer (AC Power then battery for laptops, AC power for desktops)
Hold down the power button for 30 seconds to close the circuit and ensure all power drains from components.
Make sure you are grounded by using proper grounding techniques, i.e. work on an anti-static workbench, anti-static desk, or an anti-static pad. Hold something metallic while touching it to the anti-static surface, or use an anti-static wristband to attach to the anti-static material while working. If you do not have an anti-static workbench, desk, or pad, you can use your computer tower/case by finding a metal hold in it, such as a drive bay.
Once these steps have been followed, it is safe to remove and replace components within your computer.

Hi.I hope everyone reading this is having a better start to their day than me. My Toshiba laptop (satellite L850-166) has stopped working and i know nothing about computers. After an hour looking on the net for a solution i am even more confused, so any help offered will have to be in noob language please.
So here goes.
I was watching a youtube video and my computer froze.

I left it for a bit to see if it would sort itself but it didnt.

I tried to start the task manager but that wouldnt open.

I then held the power button down and shut the computer down.

When i restarted the computer it showed the Toshiba screen (as usual) giving me the F2 and F12 options for setup and boot menu.

It then went to a screen saying windows was loading files (not seen this screen before) the progress bar underneath the message then filled up.

After about 30 seconds a new screen showed with a coloured progress bar with  microsoft corporation  written underneath. This bar only filled to a quarter then the screen went black. There is a mouse cursor on the screen that i have control of.

I have left it for half an hour and nothing changes. I have also tried to start the computer a few times but its the same every time.

If anyone knows what my problem is or can offer advice on it i would be most grateful. We have some family photos on the computer and i need to get them
Also Minecraft is calling and all my saves are on the computer.

Hi, can you get it to boot into safe mode?
To do so, from start up keep tapping the F8 key, that should give you the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the up and down keys to highlight Safe mode, or safe mode with networking, then press the Enter key. If it boots into safe mode, or not, let us know, whoever comes next will help further.

Hey everyone,
Well last night I was just enjoying my new computer when the power went off in my house for a second, the power immediately came back on and then.... of course, the same thing happened. No lightning, not even any clouds.
My computer is connected to a brand new (about a week old) cyber power surge protector so I figured everything was ok, when I tried to boot my compuer up again it went trough all of its tests and then a black screen....... I left it for about 10 minutes until I got frusterated and turned it off. I was able to boot up in safe mode but it took forever. I tried a system restore (why not) and then when I restarted I had to wait at the black screen for about 5 minutes and then it booted up.
I have to go through this everytime now and sometimes I have a problem shutting down.
Once everything boots up everything in windows works fine eccept it wont recognize my external hard drive. I can hear that the computer sees it but it wont come up!?!
Do you think that it is a hardware issue now or is it the mobo, or something else? I just dont know! It is wierd that windows still functions fine once it is up....
Could anyone PLESE give me any advice on the situation! Im not exactly an expert when it comes to this so I am completely lost

Thank you!

This laptop is only a few months old now. I was hoping to find some information on HP's site but it seems as if it is currently down. I noticed today that the display will not come on unless is opened around 100 degrees or more. When the screen does turn off it doesn't seem to be going to sleep as if I had shut the screen. I also just so happen to have let the graphics card update it's driver's last night. I'm not sure if the problem stems from that or if I have a hardware issue. Does anyone have any advise?

First post, but I have tried to uninstall video drivers, system restore, random registry fixes, and so forth. I also did a virus scan, showing 17 Trojans (I know, very bad). I am guessing that is how this happened, not sure though. Uninstalling the video drivers helps, until I need to restart it due to new software. Then I can sometimes get to the log in screen, but even after that, It just goes black after a few seconds. I have searched and searched all over, and have not found a fix. Any help?

Hi I really hope someone can help me!

I have a fujitsu lifebook with windows 7 on it
I had an error message pop up when i tried to click on google chrome this morning, so I closed it and attempted to re-start my laptop, then AVG pops up telling me I have a virus so I allowed it to "clear" said virus. I then restarted my laptop and it would not go to the login page.

I attempted system repair to no avail, I then allowed chkdsk to run and there were a lot of "security ID repairs", I have also tried f12 and booting from my windows 7 installation disk. Non of these options have worked

I get the fujitsu screen, then the windows loading screen then instead of the log in screen which would be next, I get a black screen with the cursor visable and you can move the cursor but nothing else works and no keyboard shortcuts work

someone please help.
I've been told to restore the OS but i cannot afford to lose all the files on my laptop

A:Laptop wont load past windows page, stuck with black screen and cursor

Since AVG 'cleaned' a virus - all bets r off as the problem could be a leftover from the virus. apparently, a (some) system files r damaged. Going forward, u might not want to run normally as an admin user. That helps keep malware from invisibly installing if the AV does not catch it. 1. have u tried booting to safe mode? If u can get there try this clk Start - type CMD -- rt clk cmd.exe and select Run as Admin when the dos window opens type 'sfc /scannow' let it run retry boot when done. 2. If u can't get there or that doesn't work put ur windows CD in and boot to that. Run the repair install - or it might be called upgrade. Just do NOT do a CLEAN install. That will not erase any of your data. 3. If that does not work If u get a Hiren's boot disk, or something similar. U can boot to that and most likely copy ur data from the drive prior to doing a clean install. This assumes the drive isn't corrupt which appears to be true since it gets to the Windows screen. 4. If not u will have to remove the drive and connect it to another computer as an external HDD to copy the data. 5. If none of the above works - u have come to the complete understanding of the word BACKUP................ good luck

Hi, I'm writing for a friend who has a HP Pavillion laptop running Vista. For the past few weeks, his laptop was pot luck pick as to weather it would boot up or not. It's gradually gotten worse from 50% of the time to 20% of the time. When he powers up, he gets the black screen, no logo, no cursor, etc. He's tried reconnecting power, battery, etc. to no avail. He said he wasn't able to get into safe mode either but I'm not sure he really attempted that properly. If I can get into safe mode (tell me how), what can we do to see if it's been infected? Could this be a hard drive issue? It's almost 3yrs old. He said he could not recall any particular "odd" incident occurring just prior to this issue. Thank you in advance for any assistance you may be able to offer.

A:HP (Vista) laptop not booting, black screen

Crashes (BSOD), unexpected shutdowns, sudden freezing, random restarting, and booting problems could be symptomatic of a variety of things to include hardware/software issues, overheating caused by a failed processor fan, bad memory (RAM), failing or underpowered power supply, CPU overheating, motherboard, video card, faulty or unsigned device drivers, CMOS battery going bad, BIOS and firmware problems, dirty hardware components, programs hanging or unresponsive in the background, and sometimes malware. Even legitimate programs like CD Emulators (Daemon Tools, Alchohol 120%, Astroburn, AnyDVD) can trigger crashes, various stop error messages and system hangs so you may want to disable them if using any while troubleshooting. If the computer is overheating, it usually begins to shutdown/restart on a more regular basis. Troubleshooting for these kinds of issues can be arduous and time consuming. Hello my friends,

Having trouble with an HP Pavillion dv6423om running Windows Vista SP2 (32bit)(no recovery partition available). I am not sure what kind of event might have caused this. My daughter isn't a good historian that way. The machine boots quickly and fine right up to the desktop. I get a glimpse of a couple of updates (Adobe, and another one that I can't make out), that come up on the screen. Then it goes black. I can still hear the cpu fan running and all the touch buttons that are lit up above the keyboard are still lit. It seems to be running fine just no image on the screen, not evening the back lighting.

It boots in safe mode perfectly without problems. I first tried to restore to a previous date. I tried every date rolling back until I ran out of them. Wasn't that many however. I have uninstalled many programs and games that were unimportant to try to solve the issue, without positive results.I have run ADWCleaner, JRT, and Tweaking.com's Toolbox for Windows, all to no avail. What I would like to do is to perform a clean boot and then start to activate drivers in an organized fashion to pin the problem down.

Anyone have any good ideas to solve this issue? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

A:Vista laptop has Black screen after booting up

Do a clean boot as explained here. You should be able to start msconfig in safe mode. If the computer boots normally you will have to enable a few startup and service items at a time to determine which is causing the problem.

Approx three weeks ago, I experienced a screen lock-up on a rather old Dell Laptop (Model 1450) using Windows Vista. I spazzed, tried to hard-boot (realized that a DVD was in there, poss the cause). Then reached for the Windows Vista software CD (was the wrong one - license was for other laptop).

To date, I can see the Dell Banner, the Windows Vista banner and then blackness. Nothing. No cursor...no lines...I hear the fan briefly....

Have tried to reboot in Safe mode (no luck). Pressed F2 and F12...can see both screens but Im lost.

Can't locate the orig Windows Vista cd to reload.

Is this computer dead? Any recommendations on how to revive? Lots of info on there I was hoping to extract. Thanks in advance for any advice....I'll start diggin the hole to toss the laptop into...

I have a problem that has rendered my Internet Explorer completely unusable. Every time I open it, it freezes. It will open the main page or the link I click, but when I click anything after that, it freezes and I have to right-click on the taskbar and click Close (example: I can go to google.com and type my search string in, but as soon as I click "Google Search," IE will completely freeze). Each time I do this I get an error message saying, "This program is not responding," of course. Here is the error report:

I have run two anti-spyware programs and cleaned everything out, still with no luck at clearing this problem. Does anyone know why it would be doing this?

Hi all,

As per subject, our laptop keeps throwing a flakey when trying to install Win7 Ultimate over the current crappy Vista OS.

Laptop passed the compatibility checker no probs & has all the updates installed, but every time we try, we get either
1. windows 7 install failure message then black screen with cursor
or
2. straight to black screen with cursor.

This is even after changing to the low res setting that is mentioned so often when googling the issue.

Anyone here have any advice to get it to work, or should we just smash the laptop off a wall?

Windows 7 SP1 Can Crash If Command Prompt Is Opened and Closed Repeatedly

Quote:
It might be less of a good idea to repeatedly open and close a command prompt or a PowerShell console in Windows 7, than you might think, at least according to Microsoft.

The Redmond company reveals that launching and exiting either a command prompt or a PowerShell console multiple times can generate potential problems, and even crash the operating system.

Windows Server 2008 R2 is also affected by this issue, as are the versions of the two platforms that have already been upgraded to Service Pack 1 (SP1).

If customers indeed go ahead and perform the actions described above, Microsoft warns that ?the performance of the computer may become slow, and applications may crash.?

Hi all,
I was just wondering if you can advise on something.
My new laptop keeps waking itself from sleep in my bag. As far as I can tell, the screen comes on and does not turn off and the laptop stays on until it runs out of battery (about 9 hours). This causes the screen and laptop in general to get very hot, as it is in my bag and in a laptop sleeve.
I wondered if it was bad for the screen to get this hot? I know the components can handle it, otherwise the laptop would shut down. But I am worried about the screen.
It is the Asus UX303LA-R4338H. It has a LCD panel (matte, non-touch, if that makes a difference). Windows 8.1.
As for the waking up: I think it might have been waking after 3 hours to go in to hibernate, so I have turned off hibernation in power settings (but I am yet to try this latest change). I have no tasks scheduled to wake the laptop, all devices bar the keyboard aren't allowed to wake it, can't be woken by internet, etc. What is curious is that it when this happens it does not sleep after 15 minutes or turn off the display after 5 minutes, as per my settings. Does anyone have any ideas on this?
Summary:-
1. Is this bad for laptop screen/elsewhere on the laptop to be on, in a closed environment, and this hot for 9 hours?
2. Any further ideas why it might be turning on and then not sleeping after 15 minutes?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

A:Laptop waking from sleep when closed - bad for screen?

It's definitely not good for the battery. Getting hot in the bag isn't god either. If it was me I would do a full shut down instead of sleep mode.

I'm getting the black screen with movable cursor or KSOD (Black Screen Of Death) on Windows Vista.

What happens:
The system powers on.
POST
BIOS
Start windows normally
Windows splash screen
-> Black screen <-

What I can do:
I CAN enter BIOS and have reset the default settings.
I CAN press F8 to give me advanced boot options, but all options have the same result, apart from "Repair your computer".
I CAN load the "Repair your computer" option.
I CAN move the mouse around the screen.
I CAN press shift 5 times to get a dialogue to appear, but no control panel.
I CAN press the power button to shut down the system.
I CAN start up in safe mode, which is exactly the same, but with lower resolution.

I CANNOT seem to do anything else.

However, there are workarounds to accessing the hard drive:

I CAN use MSDaRT or the System Recovery Tool.
I CAN use the hard drive as an external USB hard drive on another machine.

What I've tried:
Startup Repair - Could not detect a problem.
System Restore - No restore points.
Windows Complete PC Restore - A valid restore location could not be found.
Windows Memory Diagnostics - No errors.
SFC Scan - No problems.
Stand alone system sweeper - No problems.
Hotfix Uninstall - Nothing to uninstall.

I also COULD do a partial or full "Packard Bell Recovery", which is essentially like reinstalling windows. I DO NOT want to do this.

I'm sure this is just a simple software issue real... Read more

I think I saw this post aver at Toms but I also think you gave some additional info.
I think what may be going on it during the switch from the windows low res video driver to the driver used in normal mode.

Since you can get into safe mode try to go to device manager.
Start|right click computer|properties|device manager.
Look in the display adapter.
Is there a yellow exclamation mark there?
Or is it showing the video that you know should be there?
Please post the video that the machine uses and or the PB model.

This just started happening recently, but when I open my laptop past about 90 degrees, the screen darkens to the point where it's almost pitch black. I thought that the wires connecting the screen were broken, but when I started to close it, the screen returned back to normal. I can still see a bit when it's past 90 degrees, but only when I lean in really close and look at it from an angle.

Is there anyway to fix this? Um, it started happening when I once opened it up from sleeping. Is the wire getting crushed or something? If it helps, my laptop has windows vista and is a toshiba satellite M300 according to the label I just read. Any help greatly appreciated

A:Screen darkens when laptop is opened past 90 degrees?

Hi and welcome to TSG.

I am not 100% certain but it sounds like the backlight / inverter is playing up, this could be due to a dodgy connection.

In most laptops that inverter board can be replaced fairly easily, you could probably do it yourself. However, I am not sure if that is the case with the backlight aswell.

How old is the laptop, is it still under warranty at all?

Hi Everyone.

As the title says about, i have a Dell Vostro 1520 and im running Windows 7 with a 32bit. It is only 2 years only. It started about a month ago. I was on my laptop viewing and deleting some unwanted photos i had. A few minutes later i realized that i deleted a photo that i wanted. So i went to the recycling bin and restored that photo. When i went back to my photos and went into the album, it said something like i do no have permission to access this folder. Please press continue to get full permission. I clicked continue and i got the access i should have. Now i tried many more random folders and the same thing happened. Also when i came out of the folders, the folders had a big pad lock sign on the front of it. After that i shut down the laptop and went to turn it back on. The laptop will power on like normal. I can press f12 for the boot options. which i have already tried many times. I also tried it in safe mode and what-not, but still nothing. I can hear the fan and stuff spinning up like normal. I have also put and CD into the CD ROM and that spins up fine. So after the Dell logo on the screen, it goes black and stays that way with the cursor. You can move the cursor around no problem. I should also add that the battery light is and has been flashing for a good wile. Its flashing orange and blue. I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the battery. Because my laptop will not charge with the AC adapter in it for many months now. It will only stay... Read more

Since its a laptop the harddrive is easy to pull out and remove. If you have or can get a usb sata/ide connector hook the drive to that and then to another computer if you have one so you can save all of your important data like pix, music, etc.The laptop battery is going to have to be replaced since its no longer charging properly. It sounds like there might be a short somewhere or a power supply problem along with a bad battery.Or possibly something might be wrong with the screen or video or graphics card.

Ok this is kind of weird. Ive recently installed a game and while playing I miss typed some keys (which are near the region of ESC, including that one, the one next to 1, and a sleep button). Somehow, a combination of miss typed keys lock my computer. It stops, then the screen goes black, and the CPU light starts to blink and the fan runs likes crazy.

Then nothing..., i cant turn the CPU off, cant restart it, cant press any key to do anything. The computer just wont turn off. The only way to restart the system is to pull the plug, but that has caused my some trouble already.

It has been happening to me sometimes (i think around four or five times) and i need to know what is happening to my computer and how to solve the problem without pulling the plug if this comes to happen again.

Thank you very much for the help (and sorry for my bad english)

Just got a TC4200 tablet laptop and installed windows xp on it. Those of you familiar with the model know that it has no cd drive so I had to move the HDD to another laptop to do it so I know the install was good. However when putting the harddrive back in after the HP load screen but before it enters the xp load screen it goes to a black screen with a flashing white _ cursor similar to a dos command but with no text and I cannot type. I have no idea what the issue is nor how to solve it. Any suggestions?

As an extra note I tried the other laptops HDD and it gave the same results so that rules out the harddrive as an issue.

A:OS wont load Black screen

Matthew said:

You're probably missing essential device drivers for your laptop's hardware (which would have been installed had you ran the setup on your system). Use an external optical drive enclosure or a flash drive to install XP with the HDD in your system.

Alternatively, if you can get into Safe Mode you might be able to provide the system with drivers manually. You could also probably get away a repair install of XP, but this too would facilitate an optical or flash drive.Click to expand...

trying this nowish just gotta download sdk so I can use a flash drive as I dont have a external cd drive.

Second I do wonder if this is the correct solution as it never gets to the XP load screen so it doesnt have a chance to realize its wrong. Although dont get me wrong I hope its the problem as its an easy fix...

For some reason your OS partition may not be set to active, or your boot order in your bios may be wrong. First thing I would check your boot order in the bios, and check to make sure it can see your hard drive.

How to set a partition to active, I found a thorough guide here.

When i booted the pc all i get is a black screen, it comes up after the windows loading page. I can get to the safe mode options page but when i try to load safe mode i get the same black screen. Can somebody please help me as this is extremely annoying

Are you running two video cards? If so this might be why this is happening in safe mode. Try changing to the onboard video card and see if that helps.

Hi everyone!

My friend has a huge problem. First, let me tell you what happened before the incident. His PC was fine until it started to get really slow. It happened from one day to another. It needed ages for every single step (like opening the internet browser etc). After installing the anti malware software (malwarebytes) and the anti virus programme (avira) everything was fine again. The objects they found have been removed and after that the PC would work normally again.

Our happiness didnt last long cos after 3 days he wanted to turn his PC on and there  was a blue screen stating the following:
A problem has been deteced and windows has been shut down to prevent damage.
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL ----> look at enclosed pic

The only option we had was to restart so we did. After that the PC keeps restarting itself without showing anything on the screen.

We tried to get into the bootmenu to select "repair computer" or "turn on in safe mode" but pressing F8 or any other key wouldnt help.
Only thing that works is F12 which opens up the BIOS menu.

I really hope you can help us.

A:PC wont start normally. Just keeps restarting itself! (black screen)

Pull out all unnecessary hardware and peripherals, like extra usb devices, sound cards, other expansion cards, etc, even video card if it has onboard video. Then try starting it again (you may discover which device is causing the problem - or it might keep doing it, but this is what I would try)

So my mother had my sister's laptop and I have no Idea what shes done to it. Whenever I try to start the computer I get the Acer intro screen then the screen goes black; forcing me to only restart and use one of the F keys. Also when im on the black screen the laptop starts to burn up.

My sister gave me her laptop and I tried F2 F5 and F10, F10 (I heard F10 gives you a system restore) doesnt work and only brings me to a blackscreen

F2 has nothing there for it to work
and
F5 brings me to a blackscreen or blackscreen with writing on it but freezes after I choose what mode I want to load up.

I was going to install vista on her laptop but her disktray doesnt work.

Is there anyway to fix this? Is it possible that I can install my windows vista on a flashdrive and install that on her computer?

I appreciate your help in advance thank you I apologize for the difficulty in understanding the question due to my frustration. Thank you.

I downloaded windows service pack 2 (I have windows XP) and when it restarted, the screen was black and said that windows could not start up, perhaps because of something I had downloaded. It then gave four options e.g safe mode; start in the last working configuration; start windows normally etc - but none of them respond. All that happens is that you go to the first screen (the one that says packard bell) and then it goes back to the black screen. A:windows xp wont boot black screen

Well, I'm pretty sure this is a BIOS thing. (Inside your BIOS which you can access by hitting f8 repeatedly after booting up) There should be a security section. I'm sorry if this isn't spot on I'm very bad at remembering and I don't have the BIOS menu infront of me so bare with me. There is a setting though that lets you put a system password on. It's for extra protection. I don't understand why all of a sudden it's on but that's what it sounds like. So go into your BIOS and find the PW part and disable it.

Hey guys,I'm usually pretty savvy with fixing these virus/malware problems with my computer, but this one seems to have me keeling over. I believe it was a Trojan virus that infected my computer. The reason I say this is because a similar screen to the Antivirus2009 virus showed up saying it found a Trojan. It completely froze my computer so I was forced to shut it down. Upon reloading the computer, it got to the black screen after windows loading screen and froze there with a movable cursor. The computer stopped loading as a whole, but the cursor was still able to be moved.First step I tried was f8 upon loading, and then reload windows with the last working configuration - This did not work. Then I loaded the computer in safe mode with networking, ran rkill, ran malwarebytes [both fast and full system checks]. I believe it found the virus as many infected items were found, I removed them then proceeded to restart the computer in normal mode. Same thing happened, computer stopped loading at black screen [one you see immediately before you see your desktop]. I restarted again in safe mode with networking [both safe mode and safe mode with networking work fine]. This time I performed a system restore for 2 weeks prior to this virus. Restarted computer and system restore said there were no changes made.Currently the computer will work in safe modes, but still will not go past black screen. What are my options here? I understand at this point I can repair windows... Read more

Hello,

After installing COD : world at war I try to start the single player or multiplayer campaign and it goes to a black screen for 5 seconds and then back to my desktop.

If I try to run the game again it says that COD was not shut down properly and I should start it in safe mode....

It does not matter if I answer yes or no to this question, the same thing happens again .... black screen for 5 seconds and then back to my desktop.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling ... same thing

I tried all of the things it says to try for fixing general crashes ... same problem.

I dont even get an error message, just pushed back out to the desktop.

I should also mention this is as far as I have gotten....never even got the game to run once...

My PC exceeds all of the requirements for this game as well...

Any Ideas?

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL ---> look at enclosed pic

The only option we had was to restart so we did. After that the PC keeps restarting itself without showing anything on the screen.

We tried to get into the bootmenu to select "repair computer" or "turn on in safe mode" but pressing F8 or any other key wouldnt help.
Only thing that works is F12 which opens up the BIOS menu.

I really hope you can help us.

A:PC wont start normally. Just keeps restarting itself. (black screen)

One of the main things that might help you in diagnosing that BSOD is the STOP error code: 0x0000000A. A quick Google search revealed this from Microsoft http://support.microsoft.com/KB/314063. Although sometimes their solutions are even more cryptic than their error codes.

Other results indicate a hardware failure. A good test would be to boot with an alternate boot CD like Linux. If it crashes with the boot CD most likely it's a hardware issue. Wish I could be of more help but it's tough to say without sitting in front of it.

I have looked through loads of other similar problems to mine but can't find an answer.

A couple of hours after a Windows update, I noticed my brand new laptop running very slow for something that should be a speed machine. I scanned it with antivirus, spybot, tuneup utilities, scandisk, and windows malicious removal tool. Nothing showed up!!

After a thorough scan disk effort everything seemed to work very well so I decided to make my acer restore disk just incase anything happened in the future so that i could boot form this dvd and be fine. Like a dumbass though I decided to move to a more comfortable spot which in turn managed to pull the power cable out of the laptop during the burn process. My battery was not in the machine so it killed the computer power. (pretty unbelievable when im reading this back but honestly this is what happened!!!)

Now Vista wont load up... It takes an age to get to username and password if ever, but then when i click to load it just goes to a black screen and nothing will show up. It stays like that for hours.

I just want to scrap everything on the system and start from scratch.

Its an acer computer and im pretty sure there is an option to restore laptop to factory settings but as i can't access windows i cant click on it to do this.

Ive used F8 and out of these options

Repair your computer.....None of the options worked (no restore point on the machine for some reason, and i dont have a restore disk as vista was pre load... Read more

HP Pavilion m7480n desktop with windows xp wont start after its failed power supply is changed. When I switch on the computer at first every thing goes normal until the starting logo of windows xp. It goes until the xp logo finishing all the boot start steps. When the xp logo comes we all know there is a scrolling bar under the logo, it takes it's time to scroll that bar, but finally instead of opening the windows it goes to a black screen and the green light of the monitor goes amber and flashing. Please send me your experience on this matter.

Dear Tech support members,

I have recently installed a fresh copy of windows XP on my vaio VGN-SZ770N, everything was goin smooth untill i installed SP3, after installing SP3 and tried to restart my laptop, the laptop was on "Windows is shutting down" blue screen for like 30 mins, so i turned it off manually and turned it on again, now it stops on the black screen with windows XP logo and the loading animation and never get passed that, i can use it in safe mode only, the reason of me installing a win xp is that i had exactly the same problem when Vista was installed on the laptop, it wouldnt get passed the black loadin screen as well, im wondering if this is a hardware failure ?

Also before installing SP3 i had the Form1 window that pops whenever you start your computer
Any suggestions is highly appreciated

A:windows wont get passed black loading screen

Form1 is probably malware, and installing SP3 on a computer that has malware usually results in problems.

I suggest running a full scan with Malwarebytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php and let it fix everything it finds.

When it does boot its perfect.

Any ideas what else this could be.I cant seem to find any support for this system

Hi,

I have a AMD Athlon XP Processor.

After noticing that the speed wasnt preforming right - i.e. 1.25 GHZ instead of 2.25GHZ i went into the Bios on a MSI motherboad and went to CPU Speed and it was set as 100MHZ but i put it it up 200 thinking it was that or it could of been the CPU Frequency as 100MHZ and i put that up to 200MHZ.

After doing that it rebooted with a black screen nothing comming up.

I inserted a floppy disc to see if it was booting up as i would be able to tell to see if it accesses it - but no.

What has happened - is there anyway of doing anything, as the keyboard doesnt work either as i would of been able to change it in the Bios.

Thanks

I can hold the start button in for about 10 seconds, and the computer has a rush of fan, then blinks and goes to 3 green lights across the front, but will not shut off. . I tried putting a WINDOWS 7 REPAIR CD in the tray and boot, but still will not go to windows....just a black screen, The only way to get the computer to shut down is to physically unplug. The lights are on the front panel, and the power button is also on... and only go off with it unplugged..

After I unplug the computer, wait for about 5 minutes and restart.....it blinks the CD drive, and goes to the 3 green lights on the front and wont start just freezes with the green lights on front.

our computer had been working just fine- then it told me it needed an update- which i allowed as i trusted it was approved from vista- it has never managed to restart from this update- when i turn it on - it runs itself through a load of white sentences- saying numbers and letters- and just carries on running and then gets stuck on one sentence and the stays on that- and will stay on the forever- it doesnt mater wheher i start it up on safe mode or anything- it keeps getting stuck and wont turn off- i have to pull the whole plug out for it to turn off.

ive recently fitted a new power box- which was installed ok and worked fine for a while

what can i do to get it working? i am baffled as this has never happend to us before- its a vista computer and its about four years old now- apart from needing a new power supply its been fine and its never donw this before

Hi Guys,

I am having some trouble with my computer.
Some History-
The PC is now over a year old and has been running fine for about a year.
AMD 3500+
939GT4- SLI-G Mobo
2 GB Twinmoss Ram
200 Sata HD
DVD
6600GT Sli Pixel View Graphics PCIe
Super Flower 500 Watt PSU.

Now about 6 months ago, I started to get the Nvidia card sentinal saying the Graphics Card isnt getting enough power and will reduce its performance to prevent any damage. I checked it all out and it appear to be fine so pretty much ignore the issue.

About 2 months ago my computer, whilst playing a game, would turn off the monitor and shut down, the game in question was City of Heroes. Some nights it would work fine others it would happen twice then run fine again.

Last week the computer was running really slow and had a process running at 99%. I fixed this by deciding to do a complete formatt and resinstall.
I reinstalled everything including the graphics card drivers (the pop up about insufficient power was still there). Everything was running fine until last night when the screen went in horizontal lines of greens and whites.

On a restart it gets to the windows logo with the progress screen and then remains blank.
I then restarted and up came 'the Windows did not start properly last time' and listed the Safe mode options. Obviously normal did not work but i could use both Safe modes.
Now thinking the PSU was at fault, I ran out to get a new 600 Watt PSU and the same thing happened.

Hi, really need all your urgent help as I'm freaking out a bit as its not really my comp, and its fairly new.

Okay my computer turns ON, but makes less noise than it used to when working, and just shows a black screen...doesn't even enter bios.

Recent changes:

Ok, I installed a new Graphics card, radeon hd 5450, installed the drivers etc, got it working perfectly. Then a short while after I also downloaded a reputable program called watt 2.2.5 to clear my windows non genuine message.

Then shortly after both, I was changing my theme, and the computer screen just went blank. Even keyboard wasn't working (I was pressing "caps" to see if caps light would come on and it didn't). So I powered off, now I just keep getting black screen! What has happened? How can I fix this? Really need your help! Thanks

Restart the computer and press F8 In the Advanced Boot Menu choose Safe Mode with Networking. If that works then you need to update your video driver. Uninstall the driver you currently have and restart the computer in normal mode. Windows will load the Default VGA driver.
What is the make and model # of computer? go to the Manufacturers Support/Download drivers site and type in your make and model# and download the Video/Display driver for your computer.

Longtime HP laptop owner, I think I've owned nearly 10 of them since the late 90s and have become loyal to HP laptops like many "Apple people" are to their Macs, Iphones, etc and my loyalty was increased after "cheating" on HP and buying ONE Dell laptop (seemed to be a deal too good to pass up at time, bad move!) So, when I recently was ready to do a "Dell Dumping", I clicked the HP box for the brand on my first searches, didn't even want to bother with other brands unless NOTHING looked good and then saw this HP Envy, which I liked for being so thin AND had a backlit keyboard, something I've never had and always kicked myself for not insisting on after buying as I use them often when I'm in bed and not only did this one have a backlit keyboard, its a well lit keyboard and I was SO happy with this new HP! Also should mention this was a "refurbished" laptop bought through Monoprice, I saw the exact same model being sold as refurbished through several sellers and I'm contacting Monoprice next to see if that meant it was an HP refurb unit or Monoprice or some 3rd party job, this was my first refurb laptop or really anything, but have a couple of friends who've sworn by refurbs, for laptops and other electronics. Then, it happened! I believe I had to restart the laptop after it sat on my desk for a while and I didn't know the power strip was off, so I restart it like normal and all I get is the black screen with the blue circular HP logo in the middle with the spinning ... Windows appears to load normally until reaching the logon screen at which point 2 quick cmd windows flash on the screen and i'm left with a cursor and a plain blue screen.

No access to task manager through ctrl+alt+del.

I was thinking it's a video card problem until i plugged in an external monitor and saw a windows error box pop up saying that the program running requires that you not be on battery power.

Pulled the drive and scanned with avast and malwarebytes which found nothing.

Inserted Vista DVD but the repair function is only able to find the HP Restore partition and is unable to locate any backups.

The system runs "mini XP" from Hirens Boot without a problem, but no diagnostics that i ran have been able to find any issues...

Hello and thanks for reading,

I have a 2 year old HP pavilion dv6 series laptop running windows 7. Yesterday I turned it on and it started normally but when I tried to browse on Firefox it gave me the blue screen (for the first time ever) and it shut down. Fearing I had a virus I ran it in safe mode and started a scan and began transporting my pictures via Dropbox just in case it died on me. Sure enough a weird error message (couldnt figure out what program made the message pop up) popped up saying I had a bunch of urgent viruses.. I didn't click on it at all and before I couldn't think of what to do the blue screen popped up and it shut down. When I tried to restart it the HP splash sign popped up and the screen flickered black and a blinking cursor started in the upper left corner. So this is where I stand now... Black screen with blinking cursor. Set default setting in BIOS (didn't work) and F8 (safe mode) or F11 (system restore) does nothing... The black screen just stays there. Any ideas? Is it a gonner? I'm hoping to get back on and get my pictures if possible. Help please!

Hi...I have a compaq 5108US, windows xp pro.. recently installed a new hard drive, which worked fine for a few months. now when I try to turn on the computer, all I get is a black screen, with the compaq logo, and an immediate blinking cursor in the upper right hand corner. Tabbing f8 etc does not bring me to the safe mode option screen. I had the same problem a few months ago, of which I ended up having a new hard drive installed and that solved the problem. I wouldnt think a new hard drive would go bad that quick (if this is the problem this time). No beeps.. I also installed a new memory board, and it reads 504 memory ok, 164 memory size error, in addition to the black screen, compaq logo and blinking cursor. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

Hello,
I hope someone here can help with this older computer.  This is an Windows XP Hp Pavilion a255c machine that was showing signs of the hard drive going bad due to reallocated sectors. A new hard drive was purchased and using Acronis a clone of the drive was made. The original drive is still booting and working ok, but a little slow at times. Also windows did have some malware programs on the drive which were cleaned up with combo fix malware bytes and some other cleaning programs before the clone.  The original drive still boots fine in the computer but the new drive will get past the bios loading screen and sit there with the cursor.  You can press ctrl+alt+delete to reboot and you can boot to cd's such as knopix or hirens which i have done to check on things.  I have since downloaded the latest bios from HP and installed it using the old drive. I have also ran chkdsk and selecting to repair.  I have also tried re-cloning the drive in case the clone might have gone bad even though no errors were reported. The hang is before it starts to load windows so no f8 for safemode.  From reading other forum posts I suspect that a rootkit might be the issue however with the original drive booting fine I am not sure.

I would like to try to fix the problem rather then a re-install since there are a lot of important programs that would be difficult tore-install again. But the more I have looked and tried that is starting to look like the only opt... Read more

After Windows start up all I can see is a black screen and an active mouse cursor.
I am able to get task manager to open and even to activate Chrome (from task manager).
Other things doesn't work (e.g. can't open folders).

I've checked the "shell" value in regedit (it's "explorer.exe") but I really don't know what else to do.
I'm working with Windows 7 Professional.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

A:Black screen+Mouse active+Windows wont start

Work through the steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start
which try everything possible to start the OS, leading up to if necessary rescuiing your files to run Dell Windows 7 PC Restore or do the superior Clean Reinstall Windows 7

If this is the Dell in your specs then there is a built in Dell Hardware Diagnostics from F12 Menu to test your hardware first. If necessary to reinstall and not run Recovery, be sure to save the Dell Utilitiy partition to keep these bootable diagnostics.

Hey, i have absolutely no idea what to do here, after having my Acer Aspire 5920G laptop for about 2months now, i came to installing SP1 for vista finally (i have no idea if this is whats causing the problem, but it was the last thing i installed), well after coming home, and finding the laptop to be relatively hot, i try a log in and it goes through 'logging in' and then gets to a black screen, with only my cursor available. I tried starting it in safe mode when it gets to the options menu after bootup (it doesnt turn off either) and when it loads i find myself with a black screen, 'safe mode' in every corner. I tried bringing up task manager, because the ctrl alt dlt vista screen does show, and it wont load, i get the cursor showing its loading, but it doesnt appear. (I thought i could add explorer.exe if it wasnt showing in pros)
Im real stuck here guys, it has some important work on it, and i have no vista disk to restore it that way. Any help would be much appreciated.

A:black screen and windows wont boot safe mode. please help

Mini Xp might be Hirens boot cd do not use it. We do not recommend it here, and we do not give out advice about hirens boot cd.

Try going back to the Safe Mode boot option screen select Advanced then select your lanuage then select "Repair your Computer" then select more options then select Command Prompt .

Type in then hit enter.

CHKDSK C: /R

this will attempt to repair any errors let the process finish.

So, basically the problem with my computer is that when i start windows normally it gives me a black screen with cursor. I searched in this forum and other forums for help but nothing helped. i tried loading in safe mode but it hangs in classpnp.sys, tried restoring, tried recovery options still doesn't work. Also, tried re-installing windows, but when pressing install it would give message on the screen "Setup is starting..." and it just loads, and nothing happens, i gave it an hour or two before i gave up. I am sure the CD is fine because it worked on the same pc before. It is windows ultimate 32 and 64 bit and computer supports both.
I have a Dell computer and it is not old, I bought it like 6months ago. If anyone could help, i would really appreciate it. Thanks

Hi, I just joined here and Im having a really abd problem with my computer. The specs (that i know for sure) are:

ECS k7SEM motherboard
Nvidia GeForce 6200
192 mb of ram DIMM 168-pin (not sure what brand)
AMD Duron 855 MHZ

I booted my comp a few dyas ago and out of nowhere I get a BSOD before that screen with Windows XP comes up. I say to myself "ok, maybe its just one time" and reboot. I get it yet again and reboot. I finally get to the windows log in screen and I get ANOTHER BSOD after it finished loading. Restarted again, worked fine. I analyze my minidumps and it said the most probably cause of these crashes was hardware.

At this point I recall a computer technician saying the capacitators on my mobo were bursting, but this was a good 8 months ago, so Im not sure if its FINALLY giving out or if my RAM thats failing.

Well, everything goes well and I turn it off. I come home the next day and I get another set of BSOD's, only this time, theyve gotten worse. Im now getting 3-4 BSOD's and my system completely freezes over causing me to reset. Wierd thing is, when I reset without turning the comp off it goes by fine. Its when I turn it off and turn it on that I get this BSOD's. It seemed to me that the BSOD's and constant hang ups would get worse by day, like if something is slowly dying.

I eventually got tired of them and stop using my computer for a couple days. Today I try turning it on and the screen stays on standby, like if its not even... Read more

A:BSOD's on startup, screen stays black and wont respond.

Blue screen error messages are one of the most misunderstood error messages out there in regards to windows.According to Microsoft, only 5-20% of these errors are actually caused by the OS. Only 10% are hardware related. The other 70% are the result of faulty drivers or software incompatibility. Based on those numbers, less than 15% of blue screen errors can be permanently resolved with an OS reinstall.

So we can correctly solve this issue we need to get the minidumps. (if the computer is bootable)

To get the Minidumps do the following

1 > create a new folder on the desktop and call it "dumpcheck" or whatever you like
2 > navigate to %systemroot%\minidump and copy the last few minidump files to that folder.%systemroot% is normally c:\windows. They are numbered by date. You can paste that address in address bar to get there.
3 > close the folder and right click on it and select Send to Compressed (zipped) Folder. Please do NOT compress them in .rar
4 > use the "Managed Attachments" option under "go advanced" upload that zip file here as an attachment.

A:dv7-3065dx wont boot/ black screen need a bios file

Hi @lasernat,Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues, with help from the community!I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion dv7-3065dx Notebook and it having startup issues.  Try performing a BIOS reset, restore the settings to BIOS Factory default settings. When performing a hard reset please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices. Here is a link to computer won't start for Windows.Plug the power adapter directly into a different wall outlet. Do not plug it into a power strip, surge protector, or secondary power source as this could cause and issue.Try to connect to a monitor to see what happens.Have you tried reseating Memory and the HDD?Please let me know how this goes. You can say thanks for trying to help by clicking the Thumbs Up below!.Thanks.
