Hi, I was trying to figure out what caused the Stop error I last encountered. I tried searching for any clues on Windows XP's mini dump, but I can't seem to find it. All I see are drivers loaded at that time, but the actual file I'm searching for, the file that caused the crash as indicated on the Stop error, is not there. It's actually Speedbit's Video Accelerator file, sbbotdi.sys. I have to find that out the hard way - waiting for the PC to trigger the stop error again. I saw people here asking for the minidump and replying with the exact file that caused the error. Thanks a lot

A:[SOLVED] How to read WinXP's Mini dump files

hello

just a suggestion if you haven't tried it yet but go to the home site of the company and inquire of them of the file and any related problems that might cause this

you might get the info you are lookin for there and reasons as why it is causing the error

for this sounds like it is an application error that is related to the program and not an issue of windows

i may be wrong !!!!

but the makers of the program should be able to answer your questions , if not check back you may find that you may have other advice waiting here

Hey everyone so I've been having some issues lately with my laptop bluescreening randomly. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and can't seem to figure out what exactly is the issue with my computer. I've run chkdsk and have found no bad sectors as well as ran memtest 86 for 5 passes on each stick and came back ok. Also ran sfc /scannow and it came back with no errors. When I do get a blue screen the error it says is something like IRQL_DRIVER or something along those lines...so maybe it's possibly a driver issue? All my drivers have been updated.

So I attached 4 dump files and was wondering if someone could read them for me and possibly point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

Hi,

Remove Zone Alarm.

Zone Alarm Removal tool -> http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/fr...cpes_clean.exe (run in Safe Mode without Networking)

Also - turn driver verifier on

Using Driver Verifier to identify issues with Drivers

Your video driver, re-install using this method.

When upgrading your graphic driver you MUST remove all traces of the current driver. In order to do that we recommend using Guru3D - Driver Sweeper
Or Phyxion.net - Driver Sweeper

When it is removed then download and install the fresh copy.

Hello!

I've done a forum search before opening a new topic, and the solutions I found in other topics are for reading BSOD minidumps, not application dump files, so for example BlueScreenView won't do me any good.

I have a 3rd party application that crashes frequently. The last time I created a dump file. After searching google for the better part of an hour on how to read dump files of applications specifically, I only came up with using dumpchk.exe for a solution, but the dump file is so large, I can not read the entire dump in the command line.

Is there a 3rd party application I can read entire dump files with?

Thanks in advance!

A:How do I read _application_ dump files?

The short version is you don't. Dump files are really only useful if you have access to the source code of the program they're for, so even if you could read them, it wouldn't help you much. Those dump files are intended for Microsoft's developers to be able to analyze what was going on at the time and determine if it had anything to do with Windows (or some other MS program). They're not intended for the average person, even the average developer.

A:BSOD Please help me to read my dump files

Only ran the 9 memory dumps from July - the one's from May (a total of 21) suggest the same thing.
The 9 from July are STOP 0x1 errors - Although I did see one STOP 0x119 (video driver) error in the May dumps along with several other errors blaming your ATI video drivers.

If you haven't done anything to fix the May errors (there were no errors in June), then please do the following:
- download the Display Driver only (NOT the entire Catalyst Control Center) from Global Provider of Innovative Graphics, Processors and Media Solutions | AMD
- uninstall the current ATI stuff from your system
- install the Display Driver and monitor for further BSOD's.

Then, if the errors are still occurring, try running Driver Verifier according to these directions:

Quote:
Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition. Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is. But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver. Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows. If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.

So, I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Win7 Startup Repair feature).

Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter... Read more

Hello,
I am wanting to start reading my own dump files on Microsoft OS's (primarily 7 and 8) so I can figure out problems for myself. I have Windows Debugger (WinDbg) installed and have read a few guides but they are vague. There is still a whole lot I need to
learn. Any guides you guys can recommend? Maybe something a whole lot easier and more detailed or another debugger.
So far I have read these guides from MS ->

How to read the small memory dump file that is created by Windows if a crash occurs - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/315263
Crash dump analysis using the Windows debuggers (WinDbg) - https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/ff539316?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
I don't understand symbols and haven't been able to get them to work and it mentions I386 folder but that isn't present in Windows 7 and 8. I wasn't able to get any of my minidumps to load.
Thanks

Please remove any CD/DVD virtualization software, such as Daemon Tools/Alcohol 120%, as they use a driver called sptd.sys that is known to cause BSODs. Use add/remove programs to remove the software. After removing the software, use the sptd.sys uninstaller to remove sptd.sys from the system.

I prefer TotalMounter as my CD/DVD virtualization software as it allows me to burn images to a virtual CD/DVD if I just want an ISO file instead of a disc, and it is free.

Many use MagicISO - Convert BIN to ISO, Create, Edit, Burn, Extract ISO file, ISO/BIN converter/extractor/editor as well, which is also free.
Crashes are pointing to memory problems or driver conflicts. If you are overclocking any hardware, please stop.

Run the boot version of Memtest86+ paying close attention to Parts 2 and 3 of the tutorial. Also, in case Memtest86+ misses anything and comes up with no errors, run the extended version of the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool for at least five passes. These you may want to run overnight since they take a long time to complete (run them an hour before bed each of the next two nights and check before going to sleep that they are still running).

I've been having several regular BSOD(s) for the past two weeks. I suspect that my core is failing.

I reapplied some thermal paste and the temp is 20 degrees lower than it was running before I changed it. The voltage running through it seems to be normal.

I keep trying to pinpoint the exact errors, but my windbg keeps telling me I don't have the right symbols (even though they're configured to Microsoft's symbol server) to read WEA_ERROR_RECRODs.

Can someone with properly configured symbols paste the WEA error logs (!errrec)? That would really help me since I'm pretty much at a dead end since I can't get windbg to cooperate. Or is anyone able to help me pinpoint the exact trouble?'

I have a workstation that has started crashing on the 17th.

It seems to go down 4-6 times per day. Previously it had only crashed 2 times in about 2 years. I asked the user if they had installed anything differently or if they had power issues and was told no.

I have never been great at trying to read dumps, so I am posting here to ask for help .

A:Random XP crashes. Can someone help me read the dump files?

First, the cause of your issue cited in all your minidump files is nvufmz.sys but the bad news is there is absolutely nothing on the internet concerning what appears to be a driver.

Second, it is preventing both your Symantec and your Broadcom wireless driver b57xp32.sysw from loading.

* I strongly suggest running your security software.

Hi pinksock.

Your BSODs are all stop 0x109 and they are not showing any possible cause.

Test your RAM modules for possible errors.
How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+
Run memtest for at least 8 passes, preferably overnight.

If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.

Stress test the CPU.
Hardware - Stress Test With Prime95

If those tests are free from errors, enable Driver Verifier to monitor the drivers.
Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable
Run Driver Verifier for 24 hours or the occurrence of the next crash, whichever is earlier.

   Information
Why Driver Verifier:
It puts a stress on the drivers, ans so it makes the unstable drivers crash. Hopefully the driver that crashes is recorded in the memory dump.

How Can we know that DV is enabled:
It will make the system bit of slow, laggy.

   Warning
Before enabling DV, make it sure that you have earlier System restore points made in your computer. You can check it easily by using CCleaner looking at Tools > System Restore.

If there is no points, make a System Restore Point manually before enabling DV.

   Tip

If you fail to get on the Desktop because of DV, Boot into Advanced Boot Options > Safe mode. Disable DV there. Now boot normally again, and try following the instruction of enabling DV again.
If you cannot boot in Safe mode too, do a Syst... Read more

If you need more information please let me know and I will be happy to get it for you.

Thanks so much

I've been having BSoD's for well over a year now, once or twice almost every day. I've tried multiple times to figure out whats wrong but... I dont have ANY dump files.

I've followed instructions on how to enable them but it still doesn't create a file. Im really hoping you all can help me out here.

The current settings are:
Page files on both hard drives enabled.
Set custom page size to 17000MB-20000MB
System managed size and no paging file boxes are unchecked
Write an event to system log box checked
Automatically restart unchecked
Debug information set to small memory dump/kernal. Both settings dont work
Overwrite existing file box is greyed out when debug is set to small memory. Checked when set to kernal
Small and kernal memory dump location set to C:\Windows\Minidump and C:\Windows\Memory.DMP I created these folders as they were not present

I got a SSD awhile back and use it for my windows. However i didnt reformat my other hard drive and windows is still installed on the old one however i boot from the SSD (maybe this is some how the problem)

Im using WhoCrashed from Resplendence Software - Advanced System Tools and Developer Components to force a BSoD when trying to creat a dump file.

There are NO files in either folder. Both on the SSD or old hard drive.

I've searched many forums now and found others with what seems to be the same problem but with no solutions. I would VERY much appreciate the help!

Hi,

I need some help with Dr. Watson32 & Dump Files...I am fairly skilled with computers but no little about Dr. Watson and his actual purpose on my computer. I have gotten a few blue screens, one last nite was a memory dump? issue I believe, and I was trying get more info which is stored on the the log file for Dr. Watson but when I tried to open, computer froze probably due to the fact the file is almost 8000 kb!

So my first question is...should I delete that log file? I have changed the preferences in Dr.Watson to not append to file (i think) so it won't grow so large.

#2, What is it that Dr Watson32 actually does? and where else could I find info on the blue screen besides the log? isn't it supposed to be in the event viewer or Computer Mgmt somewhere? If the Dr. isn't beneficial to my computer he's gonna get fired! Is there another debugger better?

#3 Had 2 blue screen, fatal error, memory dumps, the dump files are on my windows drive and are quite large can I delete these safely?

I am running WinXP Svc PK 2, IE7, Intel Celeron, 1.70ghz, 512mb ram, 80% free space.

Please could I get the link for Hijack this again, somehow program is damaged won't open.(my fault I think I deleted it)

thanks,
Lora aka bratt

A:[SOLVED] BSOD Dump Files

Hi rerun1 and welcome to TSF

I think I remember an issue dealing with file extension that prevents a file from being attached to a post. Try ziping the dump files and see if a .zip extension will attach.
If that works, I'll make it a mission of mine to be more profound next time I tell someone
I'm not good at decyphering dump files, but others on this forum are. I usually look at errors in the events viewer to determine course of action. A double click on an error there will give more details about the error.

Hope this helps

Anyways, I am trying to view the dump files but can not seem to comprehend how to download and install the debugger to do so. Any help would be greatly appreciated so I can figure this out. I am running windows 7 home premium x64. I mostly get the blue screen after my game crashes out claiming it can not load map data. This error also recently started. I have ran memtest, hdd test and both passed.

Have noticed that my machine gives a BSOD during formal shutdown or restart. It seems to get through just about all the shutdown activities, and at the time I wold expect the screen to go blank a BSOD flashes with the following information:

...
POWER_STATE_FAILURE
...
information:
0x0000009F (0x00000500, 0x00000002, 0x881912C8, 0x880BB8D0)

I have followed multiple sets of instructions for trying to get dmp files, but can never get anything in minidmp or in SYSTEM_ROOT/*.dmp. I am pretty skeptical that I will ever get any dumps, given that this seems to happen right at the very end of OS shutdown. (I was only able to capture the above info my recoridng the screen during shutdown -- it flashes by too fast).

One other piece of information, one of my raid volumes keeps coming up in verify status. All drives check out as fine with SeaTools tests (long), and I am not sure if the value in verify status is a cause or effect here....

Can anything be learned from the above information? Any advice on how to proceed?

A:[SOLVED] BSOD in XP on Shutdown, No Dump Files

0x9F are usually caused by a device attached to the computer. This can either be a USB device or even a PCI device such as the network card. Start off by removing all non essential usb devices attached to the computer.
Make sure your computer is set to write minidumps

XP:
Go to Start, then Run, then type in "sysdm.cpl" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Click on the Advanced tab
Click on the Startup and Recovery Settings button
Ensure that "Automatically restart" is unchecked
Under the Write Debugging Information header select "Small memory dump (64 kB)" in the dropdown box
Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as "%systemroot%\Minidump" (without the quotes)
Click OK twice to exit the dialogs, then reboot for the changes to take effect.

When i tried to find the problem behind these errors i found that i had no mini-dumb files so i doubled back and checked that i had the settings right and everything looked good it was set to save small memory dumb's in the correct place.
so i don't really know whats going on.
So i run did lots of things with no success like, full virus scan, Memtest and Chdisk
does anyone know where to go from here? Im stuck

My Vista SP1 machine is crashing and rebooting about once a day. I then get a popup message about a blue screen error. Looking in the Event Viewer, I see several entries like this: "The previous system shutdown at 7:58:41 PM on 4/28/2009 was unexpected." I found similar entries going back several weeks. Each one was preceded by an event from WindowsUpdateClient saying "Automatic Updates is now paused", about four minutes before the shutdown time.

I'm attaching the files mentioned in the post, "System Info & BSOD Mini Kernel Dump File Collection" (http://www.techsupportforum.com/1871981-post2.html) by jcgriff2, in hopes that he (or someone else) can point me towards a particular file that's causing the crash.

This machine is used exclusively as a Media Center for recording TV shows, and is connected only to a TV. It has two Hauppauge TV tuner cards, an Nvidia GeForce 6600LE video card, 1 GB of RAM and plenty of free hard drive space.

Please let me know if there's anything else I can provide.

Thanks!

Could someone read my dump and let me know what happend after the BSOD?

A:Please read my dump?

Hi -

The bugcheck = 0xf4 = an object critical to Windows was suddently terminated.

Probable cause - Trend Micro Internet Security -

Code:
tmevtmgr.sys Mon Jul 06 02:10:28 2009 (4A519554)
I believe these drivers were involved as well (specifically the 1st 2) -

Code:
DSI_SiUSBXp_3_1.sys Tue Feb 06 18:12:17 2007 (45C90B51) - a gaming patach ..?
SiLib.sys Tue Feb 06 18:09:13 2007 (45C90A99) - USBXpress 64 bit
nvm62x32.sys Fri Oct 17 17:00:39 2008 (48F8FCF7) - - NVIDIA nForce Networking
Update NVIDIA nForce --> Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

As for the first 2 - they appear to be a possible gaming patch.

I would suggest that you remove Trend Micro --> http://esupport.trendmicro.com/suppo...tID=EN-1037161

Use Microsoft Security Essentials --> http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

Hi,

Lets get some more info on your system so we can troubleshoot easier:

1. Download SysInternals AutoRuns from Microsoft TechNet - save to My Documents directory

http://live.sysinternals.com/autoruns.exe

2. Download Sysinfo collection app - save to My Documents -

http://jcgriff2.com/BSOD_XP_v1.3_jcgriff2_PROD_.exe

Run the second exe (it runs the first exe as well as other other applications that are included in XP)

You'll find a new folder in My Documents - TSF_XP_Support.

Please zip the folder up up and attach to next post.

I'm getting a lot of Blue Screen errors on my server. It is throwing off Mini-dumps. However, I have no idea how to read them. Is there a program dedicated doing this? This is a challenge posting by CNChallenger.

A:How to Read a Mini-Dump

google is really easy to use. I just typed in your question.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315263Consider instead of reading the minidump that you review your event viewer logs and you capture the exact blue screen error then look it up via google. You would also start with basics like making sure the mainboard/cpu is clear of dust and all the fans are working correctly [just because they spin doesn't me they are at the right rpms]Then you would do your maintenance like running chkdsk /r, disk cleanup and defragRun your antispyware and antivirus after you have updated them.

A:Please help read dump file

Your error is 0x00000050: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

This means requested data was not in memory and an invalid system memory address was referenced. This error can be caused by:

1. Defective memory (including main memory, L2 RAM cache, video RAM).

2. Incompatible software (including remote control and antivirus software) might cause this Stop message, as may other hardware problems (e.g., incorrect SCSI termination or a flawed PCI card).

This is what I suggest at this time:

A. Run memtest on your RAM for a minimum of 7 Passes. www.memtest.org

B. One processor of note is Sptd.sys which is a driver used by the CD Rom emulation program, Daemon Tools Version 4. There have been reports of problems with this driver. Google it and you'll see what I mean.

Therefore, either uninstall and then re-install or update this program.

Besides the fact that I've basically and practically never had a computer to work properlly, i'm really on the edge of throwing this **** box away...

Hi and welcome to SF

Im sorry that no one has responded but i do have a suggestion. Most ppl with BSOD expertise search the SF site for BSOD in the title.. You might have more response if you change the title to BSOD and told us a lot more info abt your system.. there is a section in your user CP just for that. Fill it in change the title and I know at least 2 users that will help you fix this

Hope this helps

Ken
Perhaps the first BSOD I had ever done. Such a noob I was.

I am very consistently having my system lock up for no apparent reason, it freezes and then the screen goes black and I can't do anything. Sometimes I have to restart multiple times to get it back up and running again. I thought it was my Nvidia driver because one time I received a BSOD with the code nvlddmkm.sys, but after upgrading to the latest driver the issue still persists. I don't get a BSOD, just a complete system freeze.

I have attached the dump files and hope that someone much smarter than me can figure it out!

A:BSOD for no reason, can not read Dump file

Stop 0x116, that means a display/graphics related issue.

You are highly overclocked, which is the first thing to revert back to default in this situation.

Code:
CPUID: "Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 930 @ 2.80GHz"
MaxSpeed: 2800
CurrentSpeed: 3372
As you are getting BSODs, you should stop overclocking and run all the hardware components like CPU, GPU and RAM to their default settings.

Report us for any further BSOD running in stock hardware settings.

A:Help me read dump file please. I have posted it in thread.

The Hardware Error 0x124 is a hard one to diagnose. Some help can be shown by examining the WHEA error record. In the dump command line, enter !errrec fffffa8006c79688. (This address will very so use the address shown for Arg2.) This will break out the parameters of the error record. However; in your case, the parameters are all zeros. To me, this could indicate a processor failure, memory failure or power failure. If you are overclocking, stop. Check temperatures and fan operation. An overheated CPU can cause this error. There's really not enough in this single dump to diagnose the problem with any certainty. Check the system log and a few more dumps for clues to the problem.

I have a Dell pc OS XP. I have a zipped file containing several documents, one of which is a phone book. When I try to alter a number it tells me that it is a read only file. When I click on properties of the file all the attributes are greyed out but the read only box is not ticked. I have got round it by copying the whole document, saving it on the desktop, making the alterations and then replacing the document in the folder but it seems a very cumbersome way of doing it.How can I make it not "read only"

A:Solved: read only files

The files within an archive like a zip file are read-only. In order to alter any of them, the entire file needs to be unzipped, the changes made, and then the file rezipped. Just keeping them in an uncompressed folder would be more convenient for files that need frequent changes.

Hi, I lost the ability for WMP or Nero7 Showtime to play mpg files. I used to be able to occasionally play mpeg4 on WMP along with mgeg1/2 and of course Nero played mpeg4. Now zip. This seems to have been triggered by moving my XP OS to a new GByte motherboard. I had to zap some services and drivers to get it to boot on the new mobo (per advice on another forum on this site), but it came up fine. I downloaded VLC1.0.5 and it plays them just fine, but I want my WMP and Nero Showtime to work. Suggestions? Will reinstalling Nero7 bring in the right codecs? I tried a Nero repair but got errors about missing resource files. ??? Missing files on the original Nero retail CD? I have not done an uninstall and reinstall yet. Does Nero bring in the necessary mpg codecs to make WMP happy?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Lately my word files seem to be automatically becoming read-only, so that each time I edit them I have to do a Save As and change the file name. I've checked the file properties and archive or read-only is not selected. I've also checked Tools-Options and don't see any setting there that would do this. But as soon as I reopen a file and try to save it, it says it is read-only. Any suggestions? Its very frustrating.

A:Solved: Word files read-only

I haven't seen this before. I would check for disabled items (Help, About Microsoft Word, Disabled Items). Then I would check compatibility settings (Tools, Options, Compatibility) and make sure it's set to the most up to date. Finally I would check the permissions on the folders you save your file in, as limited access to a folder might cause a file to open read-only.

The results of the four mini dumps that you attached are as follows - the STOP error code followed by the "probably caused by" driver:

TFService is ThreatFire from PCTools. I also saw a driver from AVG listed in the dumps. Are you running both anti-virus programs and or any 3rd party firewalls? I suggest that you ensure that you only run one installed anti-virus program and be sure that it is the most recent version - i.e., AVG now is updated to AVG8, found HERE. I say this as I know that Powerpoint, Internet Explorer (iexplore.exe) and of course TFSService all perform anti-virus scanning. So Threatfire and AVG I would think is the place to start.

However, the memory_corruption may be an issue - be sure to see my next post where I will explain the various bugchecks.

Here are the dbug outputs:

I have a "data" drive, that I use to store all my data files, so that if i loose my operating system, I don't loose the data files.

This is a separate hard drive from that of the operating system one.

On my system, windows 7 sees it as the F: Drive.

On this drive are number of MS word, MS publisher, MS excel files.

Now when I access them with XP they work fine and I can save them. When I access them with windows 7, it says they are read only. I check the attributes to them and read only is NOT checked..

The program says I have to rename it. I do not want to do this. Is this another one of those "undocumented" features of Win7?

How can I overcome this obstacle and make it possible for me to overwrite my older files after I have made changes to them so that I don't have a bunch of files named the same thing with a number designation after to distinguish them?

Thanks.

So, I can access some of the pictures on my memory card, but not all of them. Most of them are coming up as HPE, .TMP, .MMT (no idea what these are!) and I can not preview them, or copy and paste them. The file names look like DQAL.MMT
instead of the regular DSCN. The file properties say that the size is 0
Any pictures I take after these ones, I can view no problem.

I have attached a print screen of the "images" and their properties.

Any ideas as to what happened and how/ if I can get these files back?

Thanks,
-Cassandra

Recently I saved my major files onto DVD using Nero6, so I could reformat my hard drive. Running XP with sp2.

When I transfered the files back into the places required, all the wording formats of the file names had changed (not readable as previous) and when I open a word doc. or a excel page and edit or add to the piece I'm working on and then try to resave. A message comes up saying that this file is read only and must resave with another name.

I had this problem once again using nero6 burning CD's.

depends what you mean by the word "use". If you just want to use them but not alter them, there's no need to change the file's properties. "Read only" just means you can't modify it.

Bsod error occurs 2 3 times a day displaying netio.sys error.

please find dump file attached

dump file

A:BsoD error please check the dump file

You need to do two things.

First of all, you have to believe and understand that QuickHeal is crap. Its desi, its cheap, it shows performance visually, but it does not do what is supposed to. Plus it contributes to BSOD and causes other issues there.

Uninstall QuickHeal as it is contributing to your BSOD.

Code:
fffff880`033cb148 fffff880`0457568fUnable to load image \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\wsnf.sys, Win32 error 0n2

Driver Reference Table - wsnf.sys

Use Microsoft Security Essentials as your antivirus with windows inbuilt firewall, and free MBAM as the on demand scanner.

Next, go to Intel Customer Support ... search for any possible update to your WiFi driver. It is failing.

Code:
fffff880`033ca748 fffff880`0585aa00Unable to load image \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\Netwsw00.sys, Win32 error 0n2
*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for Netwsw00.sys
*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for Netwsw00.sys

And it is old, too.

Code:
Image name: Netwsw00.sys
Timestamp: Sun Jun 03 21:03:40 2012 (4FCB83D4)
Let us know for any further BSOD after doing these two.

My computer after (2 years) was getting to the point where the sofwere was about to go because i dont use any kind of surceurty so it was pieling up with virises and other stuff as such and finally it just quit blue screen and all. so i did a reinstall of vista on a sperate drive and transfured all the good files that were scanned with 3 different programs over to the new install. all of them said i did not have permiten for these files FINE i said and got all the permissions for admin, system and my user (all except specal) for all the transfured files on the new hdd and install of vista. I uncheck read only on the first file in the whole tree and hit apply. Then hit apply to all subfolders and files. Then in properties it shows read only is unchecked then i close the properties window. Then when i go to reopen the properties windows for the same file it shows it is still checked with a gray box.
Then i wonder what the flip is going on anyone got a sultion from this pickle i am in.

Hi, I'm having a problem I've had some time ago but I forgot how to fix.

The symptoms are:

-Firefox is slow to start and does not connect to any site
-IE works, I can browse, but whenever I try to download anything I get

"Internet explorer cannot download X from Y.

Internet Explorer was unable to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later."

-The "Temporary Internet Files" folder is stuck as "read-only" and whenever I remove the tick for read only it resets itself immediately after clicking OK.

-The Folder Option setting is "show hidden files and folders" but I didn't see the Temporary Internet Files folder in the Local Settings folder until I removed the "Hidden" parameter for the Local Settings folder.

So basically I can browse but not download files in IE, Firefox doesn't work, reinstalling it doesn't work either. I had this problem months ago but I don't know how I fixed it.

It likely had something to do with editing the registry or deleting some virus-created files, I'm not sure.

I'd really like to have something I could use to force the Temporary Internet Files folder to stay off read-only, I think that was and is the cause of the problem.

Please help, I've searched other threads on the topic, but they didn't yield any solution, since those people had problems like routers etc, which I don't ... Read more

Hello,

Hello My roomate has created a folder on his desktop called "music1", and the permissions are set for full access/shared etc on his computer. I can access many other shared folders on his computer with my pc no problem. I can even listen to other music files on his computer in other shared folders. For some reason or other I cannot play his music files or copy his music files when trying to access the music1 folder on his desktop. If i'm thinking correctly the root folder must be shared to allow access to subfolders, but in this case...the shared folder (music1) is the root folder that was created on his desktop. any ideas?

win xp home os's

thks.

update: also I have discovered that if I remove the read only permission>hit apply>ok then when I reopen it the "read only box is checked again"

i deselect it again, and again, and again..only for it to reappear again.

stumped.

Hi everyone,

I have no idea whats going on but my computer seems to like to crash. I did do a memory scan for a few hours (memtest v4.0) an no errors were found.

I have a vast collection of dump files to look at. I would appreciate you to look at thm and tell me what you think.

I thought it was my nvidea driver so i unistalled it and used driver cleaner and re-installed the newest diver but the problem still persists. I don't think it's ram but, it could be...

If you could look at the newer dump files I would appreciate it alot.

Thanks

There are about 8 dump files I saved so maybe have a better chance understanding the issue.

A:Many dump files help!

These are all memory-related issues. I would highly recommend running Memtest86 to test for faulty RAM.

Hello and welcome Smithy sorry it seems you have had quite a number of views so I shall start the ball rolling and say that in the dump files there are references to a graphics driver fault ( I am no real expert but these are there) so have you updated the driver for the GeForce GTX 560? if not this is it
Drivers | GeForce and if you have and the problems started there then you may have uninstall it and revert back to a previous version.
