Ok I took the plunge and upgraded to IE7. HATE IT! where is the OE link on my toolbar or task bar or whatever that is? Now I am forced to go to my desktop to access OE whereas with IE6 there was the little envelop icon up top there that was my OE link. If I dont get a clear answer on this I am just going back to IE no matter what the risk as far as critical updates I just cannot STAND IE7 .For me IE6 was simple it was a clean look and simple use this IE7 is stupid, makes no sense it was just done to compete and from what I have heard from bigger geeks than I is, Microssoft is years late and about a million dollars too short (to corrupt the old cliche) with IE7,ok This is just IMHO but its how I feel abouti t. So can someone help me I even tried to see if I could put OE as a favorites but cannot do THAT either. save IE7's life on my puter (if u care, about IE7 cos I don't) I just want to return to the times of old and easier. thanks y'all bad

Hi pofolks4,

Can you attach the screenshoot?

Run Disk Cleanup tool and clear the Thumbnails (Attached Screen shot).

Click Start > Type: "folder options" and open > Go to view Tab > uncheck "always show icons, never thumbnails" under Files and Folders (Attached Screen shot).

My older second reserve laptop - Toshiba Satellite A30-921, came with a 40gb hd and 512mb ram with Winxp (approx 5 years old)
Decided to try and get it back to life and give it a second chance, as in the past it kept rebooting every 10 minutes, and was so slow when it was working.
Used the product recovery disks for a fresh new start, removed one of the 256mb memory modules and replaced it with 1gb, so now up to 1.2 gb ram.Its even managed to install Windows SP3 without any hitches.
Only need to use it for email/ surfing at present, but would like to download stuff in the future.
Have installed Norton 360 as I have this on my other laptop with a 3 user licence.

Up to yet, no problems BUT, can you answer me this:

USED SPACE SHOWING ON C:LOCAL DISK =14.3 GB !!
FREE SPACE = 22.8 GB

I have not installed any Office suite/word/works/excel etc, I have not downloaded any pictures, music, documents
Space being used for "Documents/shared docs"= 5mb (sample stuff)
Space used on currently installed programs (taken from control panel) = 312mb

Whats eating up all my space, and what kind of % of used space should determine whether to upgrade the hd in the future ?
Thanks

Im running Outlook 2002 on 5 different computers via a server running Microsoft Exchange Network. When I assigned delegate acces to four of them, there was no fight. However, one of them will not let me assign delegate access no matter what I do. I have tried using the add-in manager to set up the delegate option, but it doesnt do anything. I cannot see the delegates tab in options, nor can I see it in the inbox options. I am trying to assign delegate access for read access to the inbox, and read, edit, modify access to the calendar. Anyone have any bright ideas? Cause im tapped out. Thanks

A:Wheres the Delegates?

If you right-click the inbox (or calendar) and go to Properties, do you see a Permissions tab? You should be able to grant permissions from there. It works much the same as the delegates tab, but when you grant people permissions in delegates, it also gives them the ability to "send on behalf of" the user, which may or may not be what you want. Let us know whether the permissions tab is visible and whether that's helpful, or not what you're looking for.

hello all;
heres a good one for the gurus.
i am running an hp compaq dc5850 sff. i have two hdd. one with all my America's Army stuff on it. on one i have the deploy client and game but nothing else that pertains to AA2.
so i decide to start to set up AA2 on the vista hdd as it is on xp hdd, the first thing i do is go to my maps website of choice and start to download the user created maps i like. everything looks good, i choose the correct directory and file and even hit the open folder button to make sure the map is in the right place and it is.
now the good part, i close everything up and go back to the map to make sure it will start and play correctly and it is not there, i search for it from the search window at start and search tells me the closet it could find was the same map but on the E drive, which is where the xp hdd is when i boot vista.
any ideas?

can someone help? I just ran restore from a backup on an external harddrive, it took over 5 hrs, then finished. But where is all my 'restored' data?? I cant find it....

if this is too vague tell me and i will try to explain further but its pretty straight forward....

is there something more i must do?

A:wheres my restored data?

If the restore ran properly, the restored files and folders should be in the same places they were when you did the backup. It sounds like either there was a problem with the backup or there is a problem with the restore. Let's make sure you're doing things correctly before assuming there is some problem with the system or the hardware or the backup file - which we will address later if this doesn't help. The following should help:

Here's an article on the restore procedure: http://www.vista4beginners.com/How-to-restore-files just to make sure you're doing it right. It's a selective restore of a full or selective backup (not a complete restore of a complete backup) - but since you did a full backup it matches your process closer than a complete restore would.

Here's another excellent tutorial on the Restore process: Restore Backup Files.

Here's an article on how to use Advanced Restore (when normal restore doesn't work): http://www.mayankraichura.com/post/2009/08/06/Avdvanced-Restore-via-Windows-Vista-Backup-and-Restore-Center.aspx.

Restore files from a backup
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Restore-files-from-a-backup

Do you have any .dat files in there?

You may also want to take a look at this:

It also says you may need the Message Archive plugin from here:

Hi

I was browsing through using FireFox 2.0.0.4 - had a couple of tabs open - one or 2 tabs related to localhost.
When I switched tabs and clicked on a browse link in one tab (one with phpMyAdmin loaded, to browse through the rows), I got the blue screen.

Memory got dumped as usual. Told to CHKDSK /F to check for drive errors etc.
I dont get this often. Probably thrice in the last 3 yrs - and the first 2 were hardware related I think.

After a restart, I got the Technical Error Report and that something created at

Code:
C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERebe1.dir00\Mini070607-01.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERebe1.dir00\sysdata.xml

I typed "tablet wallpaper" into google images. It says

"About 25,800,000 results"

I keep clicking "Show more results" until I get to "page" 50 and it ends with a picture that says "I heart ipad".

Then thats it. No button to load more results. Google said 25,800,000 results. That certainly wasn't 25,800,000 results.

A:Wheres the REST of googles results ?

I did a search using your exact phrase and my results were: About 47,100,000 results (0.15 seconds)A quick google search for a definition of those results netted: Statistics Bar: Describes your search, includes the number of results on the current results page and an estimate of the total number of results, as well as the time your search took. For the sake of efficiency, Google estimates the number of results; it would take considerably longer to compute the exact number. This estimate is unreliable.Bold is mine. From the preceding I extrapolate that the guesstimation number is a product of Google's algorithm for every possibility of those two words and how they would be used as well as them being used combined. As well as possibly wall and paper individually . To get every single one of those guesstimated results you would likely need to refine your search parameters repeatedly. For example Samsung 'tablet wallpaper' then ipad 'tablet wallpaper' so on and so on. Not to mention probably include every known language as well. This is my theory. Also there was this bit of information about search results:Ordered by relevance to your query, with the result that Google considers the most relevant listed first. Consequently you are likely to find what you're seeking quickly by looking at the results in the order in which they appear. Google assesses relevance by considering over a hundred factors, including how many other pages link to the page, the positions... Read more

hi . i recently bought this new mother board by Asus, P5RD1-V. the problem is that when i try to install windows xp on my SATA HD, after the initial stage during which the setup copies all the drivers and then gives that option " to install windows XP press enter" plus one or two other options, when i press enter i get this massage that says " setup didnt find any hard drives installed on your system. check to see if any HD is installed .... " and then it goes on to say things like check your drive configuration or the drive health and things like that. all this when at the the bootup it does show the hard drive connected at SATA port 1. !! ? i run seagate diagnostic tool on it and it showes the drive as perfectly healthy. i dont know why is it doing it. the hard disk is spanking brand new. the same goes for the 120GB WD SATA. the interesting thing it has no issue with the good old IDE HD's. i connected my old maxtor IDE hard drive and the setup ran as smooth as it can get. i dont know why setup isent detecting the SATA HD. is it the board or is it somthing else. any ideas !

Before my new computer arrived I installed Microsofts Easy Transfer program on my old XP computer , ran the program and sucsessfully transfered my files on to a new blank CDRW disc.
Today I fired up the new computer for the first time, ran the Easy Transfer program , pointed to the CDRW disc and the program formated as expected.
when the program was completed and files were apparently transfered and the programs status window closed. and that was it, nothing more.....
I unhid my system files and and searched everywhere with no resolve (sighs..) would one of you fine folks please help me locate my transfered files as the are very important to me.
Thank you again.. I'll check back often

A:Used Windows Easy Transfer but now wheres my files?

In the start menu go to Accessories -> System Tools -> Windows Easy Transfer Reports and open it up.  The Transfer Report will show what has been transferred.  If you click Documents it should show you exactly where it's placed your document files and what they were.

Hi The shields are probably getting ready for Thanksgiving like cooking the big bird and getting the house ready for all of the TSG family to munch on the goodies. Please be patient and I am sure when they arrive they will be there.

And thanks for the compliment it is appreciated.

Have a Happy THanksgiving.

In this picture, you can see a settings button for the Loudness Equalization enhancement. When I go to the enhancement tab, there is no settings option (or "Preview" or "Restore Defaults"). Why is this? I wanted to see what the "Release time" option does, and I can't get to it.

Also, while I'm here, I was wondering if there was a way I could "tweak" loudness equalization. I want to make low/quiet sounds louder, but I don't want to reduce the volume of louder sounds. Is this possible? I've been googling for ~2hrs and I came across the Release time setting, and I was gonna mess with it, but it's missing.

Thanks!

A:Loudness Equalization - Wheres the settings button??

No settings available... unfortunately!

It looks like MS has licensed some of the "Waves" DSP technology, pretty high end software... part of the L-series Maximizer. It's a combination Limiter/Compressor and I think they figured the general public wouldn't know how to set it up. Too bad, it could use a litttle tweaking, the attack is a little slow.

I have a pc with win vista on hdd 0 and win 7 on hdd 1 both are a SATA connected disk drives ,the system boots up on the win 7 choice of o/s but not with the windows vista selection , when the system has booted in win 7 I can hear hdd 0 restarting and spinning up so I'm thinking that theres either a data parity error or a hardware issue with the disk drive ,what I would like to do is convert the pc to just run on windows 7 because I dont really use the windows vista o/s much , if its a hardware fault I would like to replace the hard drive but only have a single o/s on the system , I would like to know where the BCD file is kept and also how to go about this task of going from a dual boot to single boot system with just the 1 o/s.
any help would be appreciated
Brian....26sw905

A:make a dual boot pc into a single boot pc ,wheres the bcd stored?

The Vista bootloader and the Win 7 bootloader are the same.

I can't answer your question but my guess would be that the boot files on are on the Win 7 hard drive, if it's the latter install.

I'd probably just install EasyBCD on the Win 7 drive...and then see if it automatically recognizes the Vista install. If not, then manually add the Vista install to EasyBCD, making Win 7 the default. That should (IMO) ensure that Win 7 remains bootable. Then just format/remove the Vista drive.

A simple way to find out...is to temporarily detach the Vista drive...and see if Win 7 boots. If it does, the files are on the Win 7 drive .

titled "Need HELP for Windows XP failure to run Explorer.exe after Welcome Page".

Press Ctrl+Alt+Del. If it brings up Task Manager, create a new task and run %windir%\explorer.exe. If this brings up the desktop, then according to the posted HijackThis log, this is my speculation (assuming your system is clean of malware):

Too many startup processes. Any undue change to any of them can cause problem during startup. If you could remember the very last time you had accessed the internet before this problem cropped up, did your hard disk light blinked a lot? Some programs were actively reading or writing to your machine. It could be Windows update or ZoneAlarm or others. Undo Windows update, uninstall ZoneAlarm, unintall IME, uninstall Java, etc. Try to minimize or simplify you startup process. Get replacement, another version of Java or from the other vendor, another firewall, another IME, etc.

Sorry for the delay. When I solved my similar problem, the thread is closed. So I post here in case anyone care to read. I uninstall ZoneAlarm, zap clean the registry with Registry Easy 4.7, replace it with Comodo Internet Security Free 3.5.54375.427. My XP sp2 is back to normal and desktop shows up after logon as normal.

I have been having CPU issues at 100%. I contacted HP.com support and the last suggestion they suggested was to update the video card driver. I have a Nividia GSForce2 MX200 (Compaq Computer) They sent me to a link to their ftp site and I followed the instructions to download, install, and do a restart. When I restarted there were no desktop icons. It probably means that whatever files are damaged are preventing the startup from finishing. The normal internet programs that launch upon starting up the computer are not launched and I have to manually launch them by finding them. I tried doing a last known good configuiration, and when that failed in safe mode I couldn't access the Start Menu to do a system restore. I tried rolling back the driver to the previous one to no avail. I called HP and of course they wanted to charge me since it is out of warranty. I said it was their file and I asked for a supervisor who told the tech to tell me the same thing. So I was stuck with chat support. We were able to try the system restore which didn't work. I went to Control Panel and tried cliking on Taskbar or Start Menu but nothing happens. HP sent me 2 links for some patches:
HP said in an email "Based on the information that I gathered from the chat session,

While working offline, my Dell Latitude 131L goes into hibernate. When I restart the laptop it opens to a generic "Dell" desktop picture. There is no Start Menu or toolbar. No desktop icons are available. The cursor is in the middle of the screen, but is of no use. I was NOT installing any software or hardware.

I attempted to reboot, same screen appears.

I am able to start in "Safe Mode."

I attempted to use a Restore point, but each time (I tried several dates) it will not take.

I called Dell and we ran a Hardware test (Fn and Power keys), no errors were present.

Update: It loads REAL slow, taking about 15 minutes or more. But then I can not anything. After an hour of loading, I ran Kaspersky and no threats were found.

Restarted and got a blue screen that says
Checking the file System C:
The type of file system is NTSF.
The volume is dirty

Then it does a series of verifications that take a long time.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

A:XP loads to a generic desktop, no start menu order desktop icons

The following steps will be a good start to resolving the issue. The first thing that you should do is to check that your hard drive is not failing. On a working computer, download the diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturer's website to create a bootable floppy or CD.Find the brand name of your hard drive. You will find this info on the label of the hard drive (most likely you will have to remove the hard drive from the box to read the label). You will also find sufficient info to identify the drive (the model number) by looking at the hdd code in the BIOS Setup Menu, and then googling the code. Another alternative is to use something like Everest or Belarc Advisor.

problem with desktop display properties

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two nights ago I visited the web site Flash Fun Pages to find a joke to send to a friend who is sick with cancer. I did not end up sending anything and logged out. Yesterday, the background on my desktop was hijacked by this site. I ran Ad Aware SE and AVG both regularly and in safe mode, but did not find any viruses or malware. I also ran Trend Micro House Call but that did not find any problems either.

The problem was that the backgrounds were frozen at the end of the list, on "desktop", and could not be changed. I went on line to Downloads.com and looked under desktop display hijacked and found some freeware named Desktop Hijack Fix. This got rid of the Flash Fun Pages joke links and ads, but now my desktop display backgrounds are still frozen, although they are now frozen at the top of the list--'none'. I can choose a color, but I cannot access any of the background options, including the photo of my dog, which is my background of choice.

Interestingly, there are two users of my computer, and the other user does not have this problem. I can change the display properties backgr... Read more

A:[SOLVED] opaque titles for desktop icons can't be made transparent/desktop always act

I have gone through the 5 steps.

Attached please find the Hijack This log, and the 2 DSS logs.

I cannot post the Panda ActiveScan log from my first scan because I simply forgot to upload it and when I go back to the site all it says is that 11 tracking cookies were disinfected. But I am attaching the log from my second scan. Interestingly, there were 4 additional low level tracking cookies found and disinfected. The same 8 vulnerabilities--all from Microsoft updates--remain on my computer since the software does not disnfect these or offer the opportunity to disinfect them.

Spyware Blaster has been set up to protect everything on my computer.

But the problem is still that apparently my desktop is active and cannoot be turned off. I have run Iconoid and cannot make the titles for my desktop icons transparent because it states that the desktop is active. You can see in my previous posting the work that Cool Freak has done to try to figure this out before he kicked this over to "the experts".

Please help me. It's not only that my desktop is ugly with these opaque icon title boxes, there is something wrong with my computer that is causing this that we have not identified as yet, and who knows what havoc that might wreak in the future! Thank you very much for your attention and help.

I recently setup a new Windows 7 machine (brand new Skylake build) and swapped the displays from my old machine to the new machine, and started working on the old machine via RDP as I migrate things slowly.
What I found by trial and error is that usually within 20 minutes of using Remote Desktop from the new machine, I would get the Aero Performance warning. I see dwm.exe consuming 100% CPU of a single core. This boggled me because I have a fast machine, with
an ASUS GTX 580 Matrix GPU (nVidia) that performs very well. I am using the latest Geforce drivers.
Once it happens, dragging Windows is a very hitchy experience. Nothing works to recover. If I start the Desktop Window Manager service, it'll go immediately to a high CPU state. I have to reboot to clear it up. If I dont use RDP, it never happens, but within
minutes of opening the RDP session, there it goes again. I can stop the Desktop Window Manager Session Manager service to workaround the problem.
One more symptom. Once, before rebooting, I decided to uninstall the nVidia drivers and try reinstalling them. The installer complained that no compatible display adapter was found. I had to reboot in order to reinstall them. This almost sounds like a flaky
driver or GPU, but this GPU worked fine for the past couple of years in another box (though that doesn't mean it didn't go bad since).

Wasn't sure if this is the right category but I guess it's ultimately a question of hardware...

In case you don't want to read the whole background, my ultimate question is, Which power supply should I look to get to replace the dead one in the old unit?

I just moved into an off-campus house at college and the last homeowners left behind a lot of stuff, including what appears to be a functional Dell desktop PC. At least 10 years old, judging by the available ports on the MB and the other hardware inside. The unit is dead on its own, but I tried connecting the 20-pin part of my desktop's power supply to the old unit and the motherboard seemed to power up (light went on, CPU fan started).

The hard drive and CD-ROM drive didn't seem to power on, but I found what seemed to be a safety button (see first image) which I am guessing prevents those devices from powering on if the case is open. Can anyone confirm this for me? I want to know if anything else in this unit is dead, but it seems like everything was in great shape (not much dust, etc). I don't really want to pump more than like $50 bucks into this thing, as my goal was to use this PC as either a dedicated Linux machine or to host a web site (not expecting much traffic at all, and with FiOS Quantum 75/75 we have more than enough bandwidth).

The motherboard looks very much like the Dell OptiPlex GX260 SDT SFF Socket 478 (Image: http://attach.forum.ge/post-54-1270667615.jpg) although I cannot seem to find the exa... Read more

I've searched and I get not even one link on this. I have a clean install of Windows 7 plus Firefox and Dell Drivers.. My problem is it creates a ghost like file that really isn't there because if I delete one, the other becomes inaccessible and I have to manually refresh using F5. Also, when I restart my computer it also is creating duplicates of files and shortcuts. Even when I install software it creates two short cuts.. I can deal with having to manually refresh, but I cannot deal with it creating duplicates of everything.
Here is an image that will further confuse you.

I can't see anything other than a folder shortcut in your snip? But, with your problem, have you by chance "taken ownership" of any system folders - particularly the "Documents and Settings" folder. This action can often produce the effects you are experiencing.

So I rebooted my computer after a crash, and after logging in the screens were completely black and my mouse & keyboard was unresponsive. I did Crtl + Alt + Del which brought up the correct menu, and after I exited it I was put onto the start menu, which was blank. Just like the login screen and lock screen, the colour and design had been reset (to purple, if it matters). Leaving the start menu presents me with the black desktop again, but the start bar at the bottom is present and after a while the clock, wifi, volume etc. loads in the bottom right as well as a User Profile Service notification telling me I've been "signed in with the default profile for the system". There are no pinned apps either, although FileZilla Server loads up after a minute and that is on the start bar now. Also, immediately after leaving the start menu, a "Location is not available" dialogue box comes up with the error message:

C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location.

When I click OK on that, the Recycle Bin appears on my desktop. Opening the recycle bin displays the same message as before, and it does have al... Read more

check your C:\Users folder, see if there's a user in there call Temp. If so, your folder should be in that user's desktop folder.

Hi there,

So a while back when i was running XP on this rig, i had a active desktop wallpaper setup that would display animated local radar images. Basically the same radar you would see if you put in your zipcode in the weather.com or accuweather.com radar section.

So now with Win 7, i cant get it to work for the life of me....and no, sorry, the wimpy sidebar gadgets just dont cut it.

Basically what it was, and am looking to accomplish, is have a live animated radar as my wallpaper / background.
Preferably not the whole screen, just alike a 12X8 square or something relative.

Picture attached of a mock setup of what im talking about.

Im pretty sure i originally was using this as my source for the animated wallpaper:
http://radar.weather.gov/Conus/Loop/NatLoop.gif
My favorite radar site

Any ideas all?

Thanks for reading

Recently my desktop icon placement has not been able to stay put if I do a desktop refresh or a computer reboot. I have looked at many internet hits on this same topic and no solution suggested has worked. I've tried them all til I'm blue in the face!

I have done the IconCache.db thing where you can delete an existing file from the hidden ...\Appdata\Local\ directory and restart the explorer. There was no file there. Yes, I have show hidden files turned on. Restarting explorer doesn't help. Rebooting is supposed to re-create the file, but it doesn't. Resetting the colors from 32 to 16 and back is supposed to rebuild the cache. It doesn't. Still no file there. After manually placing a few icons and refreshing the desktop, it is supposed to remember where they are, but it doesn't, they just fly back to where they were before manually moving them.

This is getting to be very aggravating and frustrating. I don't know why this has started all of a sudden, and I cannot seem to find a solution from the many internet hits on the same topic.

Someone out there, please help with fixing this problem. I know I'm not the only one with it. Thanks!

A:Desktop icon placement does not survive a desktop refresh or a reboot

I am using Win 7 Home \premium.

When I had my Vista Home Premium, I had over 200 desktop icons/shortcuts.
Dam things would relocate whenever they wanted. Imagine the frustration and anger trying to find the shortcut I wanted ?
I finally came across this tutorial :
Save and Restore Desktop Icon Layout in Windows Vista - How-To Geek
I used it and it worked. If one or 2 icons ever moved, one right click will put them back where they were supposed to be.

Yesterday, while on my Windows 7, I decided to install that program as well and see if it also works in Win 7.
It does.

Give it a try and please report back.

Note : at the end there is a notice about 32-bit and 64-bit.

If you provide some information about the "desktop", like the version/patch level of Windows, the indications in Device Manager for the NIC, etc. we might be able to help.

In addition, open a DOS window and type:

Open C:\RESULT.TXT with Notepad and copy/paste the entire results here.

The problem I'm having is at start-up. Windows loads properly, but when it's finished I have no Icons, no task bar, and can't right click on any part of the desktop. All I Have is the wallpaper displaying, that's it.
I noticed on task manager when I hit CRT-ALT-Delete, that Explorer.exe is not on the list of processes. when I type in explorer.exe in the new task, I get a error that says cannot find explorer exe. make sure path was straight etc etc. I was wondering if you might know what the problem is and allow me to take the steps in remedy this problem. I think the explorer has something to do with the desktop not loading properly.

Hello,
I have a custom built desktop at an office, it was running Windows Xp pro with the license glued on the side. At a later time a full license was purchased for windows 7 pro oem, and glued on the side of the computer. The system was wiped and Windows 7 pro freshly installed (not upgraded).
Now a new system with Windows 10 pro was bought to take it's place.
My question is there, the office has a Windows XP Pro laptop, that must be upgraded to Windows 7 pro. Am I able to use that license from that old desktop for Windows 7 Pro on this winxp laptop to install Windows 7 pro? If so, how would I go about doing it? Just an upgrade and use that product key?

A:Transfering license from desktop to laptop, and throwing desktop away

The laptop license will be an OEM copy of the OS, this is managed by the OEM of the laptop and would not be transferable to the new system. the additional win7 laptop is also an OEM license but in this case the support would be the responsibility of your Company IT department.

You need to purchase a new license for the laptop, but, if you can get one an upgrade license would be OK as the XP pro to Windows 7 is a valid upgrade

Hey,

I am running a desktop that freezes within 3 minutes of Windows XP and showing the desktop. Keyboard won't work and sometimes mouse cursor is able to move. I tried system restore, recovery console (which caused me more grief because it overwrote my Vista MBR), NOD32 scans, Ad-aware scans, Spybot scans, and ClamWin scans. I don't know how this happened. A few days ago, I came back to my computer from watching TV and it was frozen. I had to manually reboot with the button and it's been like this ever after.

I've looked around, no one else seems to be having this problem.

I created shortcut icons for Word and the icons work fine but look like broken shortcuts. Most ppl suggest right click-properties-change icon. I do that and there are NO different options to choose from. Its a blank box.

This is a pic SIMILAR to my situation. The Opera icon is what I get with my Word 03 and Word 2010 icons. They both looked the way they should BEFORE I clicked on them the first time. But since then, they still work but just look awful.

I have a 32-bit win 7 if that matters. ANY help would be great!

Hello Everybody,

I stupidly saved important folders to desktop; When I click properties says location is c\users\user\desktop which to me is where the folder and files are on the HD.

I have tried using a practise folder to get it from desktop to My Docs with properties showing as a Document, so I can delete from the desktop.
When I create folder on desktop and "send to" My Docs it appears in my doc but when I delete from desktop it deletes both.
I looked at a article about the old way drag and drop as XP did. Found the move to under edit but still can't do it.
there must be a way!
I do not use libraries as they confuse me as to where the file is stored on HD and I only have important docs twice a year, which is also the problem, as I don't repeat what I've learnt enough.

I've been storing some on my old XP drive [Has all my old records on] as I can work that, but I thought I could use the Win 7. Well I'm pathetic , I can't even move a document and know its safe on HD.

I do not use the libraries as sounds simple but I never believe I won't accidently delete.>

Any help will be appreciated.
Regards Shalimar

How do I get the option back?

Try this

Go to Run --> type in regedit

Then go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

Look for the entries NoDispAppearancePage and NoDispBackgroundPage. If they have 1 as their values, set them to 0.

A:Can't create new desktop icons when saving to desktop in Windows 7

Here are some things you can try.

Click on the desktop and press F5.
or
Righ-click on the desktop > view > and uncheck "show desktop icons" then check it again.
or
Reload the icon cache.
In windows explorer make sure hidden files are shown. To do this go to:
Tools > folder options > view > select show hidden files, folder, and drives.
then go to C:\Users\username\AppData\Local (replace "username" to your username)
and delete IconCache.db
Then reboot.

I have a Toshiba laptop running Vista. I got a virus a little bit ago and got that all sorted out and fixed. When I had the virus my desktop wouldnt load at all in regular mode. but worked in safe mode. After getting all the virus stuff taken care of..I was able to work in regular mode. It took a little while for my desktop to load (about 15 minutes) but it worked fine once it was loaded.

Well after a couple of days it started taking longer and longer for my desktop to load. Now its up to about 45 minutes for any icons to appear. When I try to log onto IE I get the hour glass for a few seconds and nothing happens. I walked away thinking this would be one of those..time things..and came back and hour later and still nothing opened. I can run perfectly fine in safe mode. Any suggestions?

Hi! I'll describe my problem with an example. Let's say I'm moving a file to the desktop (the folder in Windows Explorer). When I then check the desktop, the file isn't there. My problem is that changes that are either made to the desktop or the desktop folder doesn't apply to the other one, so the desktop folder and the desktop itself looks different. How can I fix this?

Sorry for the confusing explanation :/

Hi all
Strange request this one -- I need a new Desktop / Workstation -- needs to be a fixed workstation.

I've got plenty of spare disk drives and memory modules and I don't need to buy a monitor.

From what I've seen so far it seems I can get a MUCH better deal on buying a Low end Robust mini tower SERVER such as the LENOVO THINKSERVER S100V (basic model around 300 GBP / 460 USD) rather than a workstation such as say DELL INSPIRON.

The workstation will get ROBUST use and needs to be on for long periods.

A Mini tower Server seems to be the better option -- I can "Up the memory" and increase the disk space and run Windows 7 without a problem on it. Seems Servers at the lower end of the market are actually CHEAPER than Desktops.

(Not talking about "Racks" or "Blades" btw -- these are more specialized nd expensive of course.

I don't need extreme gaming so "Roll your own" isn't applicable here.

Any comments - Disadvantages of running a PHYSICAL server as a workstation (note that a WORKSTATION OS would be installed on it BTW).

Cheers
jimbo

A:New Desktop needed -- Domestic desktop or small Server ??

Building your own rig doesn't only apply to gaming. But if you're adamant about buying a prebuilt... I don't see why there would be any problem, other than the extras (graphics, sound card) not being exactly up to par.

The computer crashed hard. I was running an application call Stylizer, a visual css editor. One of the tasks it allows you to do is switch between several browsers to see how a web page may render differently. When I clicked on a form select element while in IE 7.0, it crashed. This is a repeatable bug that I have encountered before(don't click forms select again ya dummy). Anyways, all the applications that were running died and the computer froze requiring a hard reboot. When the computer returned, the desktop wallpaper image was zoomed. Obviously something became corrupted with the crash. I can't find a solution how to unzoom the wallpaper image. I tried a number of display and accessibility options without any luck(screen resolution, DPI, large icons, centered, stretched, etc.). I did notice if I changed from my usual "hide desktop icons", to "show desktop icons", the wallpaper image is then displayed correctly. I can also kill the explorer.exe process and the wallpaper will show correctly. If I run File>New Task(Run...)>explorer.exe again, it reverts back to the zoomed wallpaper. I tried a restore point from the day before. Wiped display drivers and installed the latest. Switched the dvi cable to a different output on the card. I uninstalled Stylizer, all it's files and registy entries. I've run sfc /scannow. I also tried rolling back to SP2 and back again to SP3 to re-install explorer.exe. Still zoomed. I've run out of ... Trying to set-up/learn Win 10.

In Win 7 I had a 'desktop' entry on my taskbar (when clicked) that showed EVERYTHING on the desktop ... thus allowing me to have a 'clean' desktop so I could see the background images w/o icons cluttering it up.

Referring to the tutorial 'Pin to taskbar' Folder and Drive in Windows 10 I created a 'desktop icon' but it only shows 10 out of 26 'items' (some shortcuts, some folders, etc).

The 'desktop' (folder ?) only contains those 10 items ... is the another 'desktop' folder floating around the Win 10 refers to when displaying it on the PC?

Ive been running a windows 2000 for a while now, the other day i saw it was running,
but i hadn't turned it on, and the monitor was blank.
Tried the mouse and the keyboard, but got no response, so i turned it off using the
button on the front of the computer.
To my surprise after a few minutes, it turned itself back on. I watched the monitor
as it went through the motions. Memory check. Win 2000 logo. Black and white stripe.
All seemed well, until it was about to show the desktop display, it didn't show up.
Just blank, but the computer carried on clicking and twinkling its little light. Then
the Windows start up musical sound played. Then nothing, but the PC stayed on, and
its little light would blink every so often.
I waited a while, then decided this wasn't right.
Switched it off again, and started it again. same result.

Tried again, this time i went for "Safe Mode".

It started up in "Safe Mode" , but of course it can't be used fully in "Safe Mode".
I looked around it, poked at this, poked at that, all looked normal for "Safe Mode".
Shut it down, properly this time, by using the proper shut down sequence.
It shut down ok, i thought - maybe thats all it needs, a proper shut down - maybe it
will behave itself now, and fly right.

No.
It started itself up after about four minutes, same as before.
PC running, no display.

So, i am asking for help please.

John

Hello All. I seem to be infected with some rather malicous malware. It redirects most search engine results upon click to advertisments. I have followed a trusted friends advice and booted into safe mode, ran Rkill, then scanned with Malwarebytes and someinfections were found and removed. However, when i boot back into normal mode AVG still prompts to remove the following infected files:

c:\windows\assembly\GAC_32\Desktop.ini
c:\windows\assembly\GAC_64\Desktop.ini

Threat name: Trojan horse backdoor.generic15.AXLA

However, the "move to vault" option fails with AVG in normal mode.

I am not sure where to go from here, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

A:Infected with Malware. GAC_32\Desktop.ini and GAC_64\Desktop.ini

Hi,After performing these scans, enter the results in your next post and also update me on the status of the PC.Note: You may have to perform some or all of the following in Safe Mode With Networking, depending on if you have internet access while in the normal Windows environment. If you still don't have internet access in Safe Mode With Networking, you will need to download the installers onto a flash drive from a working computer and transfer them to the problem PC.Also, if you have any of the following programs already installed on your machine, download the latest version along with updates, then run the scan.================================================================================Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.Save it to your Desktop.Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.================================================================================Please download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware FreeDouble-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use SUPERAntiSpyware to scan and remove malware from your computer Guide. An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program. If it will not start, go to Start > All Prgrams > SUPERAntiSpyware and click ... Read more

Just noticed this and found it kinda annoying. The instance i was in was watching some youtube videos, then i decided i was finished and closed the desktop by dragging down and throwing it away. Firefox was minimized. But i noticed the video was still playing in the background. Is this supposed to be like that? I feel like when i close the desktop it should close any applications related to the desktop. Maybe its just firefox? Gonna test with ie right now.

A:Closing desktop doesn't close Desktop applications?

No, this is the correct behavior. When you close the Desktop, you aren't quitting the desktop. What you are closing is the Desktop *VIEWER*. The desktop is still running, it's just the program you use to access it has been closed.

If you've ever used Remote Desktop, it works the same way. If you close the Remote Desktop window, the apps keep running because you did not quit those apps. Just the viewer that lets you see them.

I made a free tool(for those who have more than 15 icons on desktop) to arrange your desktop icons into shapes like hearts, circles, stars and so on. It gives a bit of freshness to your desktop, icons arranged into a cute heart on a good wallpaper looks really nice.

You can set the height, width and position of the shape on the screen. It also have a function that saves and restores icons position, useful for those who change resolution a lot.

I attached some screenshots to see what I'm talking about.

OS: Windows 7 Pro machines that connect to a 2008 server

At a business we help, they gave us a call yesterday morning saying that only specific desktop icons had disappeared. Looking at their machines they were missing shortcuts to a program that runs from the server as well as short cuts to folders on the server. However, nothing in the server seemed to have changed, the folder is still there, the modification time was when they last used it the day before. They are in a domain if that would help. We were able to simply go and place the icons back on their desktops yesterday and said they haven't had any issues this morning.

Their shortcuts were not from a single folder on the server

So, the main question, what would cause only very specific desktop icons to disappear from their desktop?

A:Desktop Icons Disappearing On Multiple Desktop Workstations

This is probably why.
