had the "great" idea of downloading some up-to-date drivers from Dell Support Center a couple of weeks ago, and the result was no sound, even though the sound was working perfectly before. Never updated any drivers in this 4 year old laptop before. Now I have a red cross over the speaker icon and when I click on Open Volume Mixer it says "no audio device is installed". Steps I tried in order....
-rollback the drivers....couldn't do was greyed out.
-uninstall and delete the driver software in Device Manager and let Vista install whatever drivers it had in store for it....didn't help
-did a restart holding the Fn key to check if the sound card had been damaged and was no longer working.....passed all the sound tests....sound card is OK.
-tried some free tools from the net regarding driver repsir, registry repair, PC repair, etc....didn't help
-tried some crazy solutions from the net (Microsoft Techie Forum) such as doing a "scan for hardware changes" under Device Manager and turn the machine on and off many times in sequence......didn't help.
-for some reason I had no restore points saved in order to restore the entire machine to a previous date......I think nCleaner, a free tool from the net, cleaned my restore points as well.
-the DVD-ROM in this machine broke for lack of use I suppose....never used it since day 1 because I have an external one.....I only have the rescue disk from Dell and not the actual Vista ... Read more

Hi there.
I bought Dell 1720 notebook with Vista. All worked good, but sometimes BSoDs appears.I decideed to re-install Vista first. The installation process works fine until after the 1st reboot that goes to "completing installation".Then I found a great post of jtun, who recommends to make some changes in BIOS (
Go to BIOS ---> Onboard Devices

Go to Flash Cache Module - Turn it OFF
Go to SATA Operation - Change AHCI to ATAClick to expand...

).Then Vista was re-installed well. All works fine.Because of many software doesn't work properly on Vista, I decided to install Windows XP. I found a great article on this. Firstly I download ahci drivers and integrate it in my XP.Then I put all settings back (I turned Flash Cache Module on and chenge ATA to AHCI) and boot from DVD with integrated ahci drivers in Windows XP.Nothing appears, only blue screen. Then I took a proper Windows XP package and tried to boot from it-nothing...
How can I properly install Windows XP?I have to format my drive first and then try to boot from Windows XP ISO with integrated ahci drivers?Guide-me-please!
Thanks a lot.

I have a Dell Insipiron 1720 laptop with Vista Premium. it has been bluescreening alot lately. It was bluescreening when using the internet opening some programs etc.more recently it was bluescreening at startup. the bluescreen would do a dump. but I never looked at the error code(I know I should have) but I thought it might be just a virus. So I wiped the laptop and reinstalled Vista. Now the laptop blue screens at startup. just after the vista loading screen. The bluescreen happens so fast that I cannot see the error. The only way I can get the laptop into the desktop is to remove a part like the battery and putting it back in.I have tried removing memory, resetting the HD, removing baterry, wireless card. also when the laptop was wiped it was missing 2 drivers in the chipset driver and video driver, I installed these as I thought the video might be the issue. It also does not show any serious errors in the event log any ideas?

Contact Dell and see if you can order the installation disc's. There's usually a minimal charge for them....last time I order any was from Dell and for XP Home....and those ran me $20 plus tax/shipping.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop. The keyboard continously "skips". When I type - whether it's in an email, instant messaging, or surfing the net - whe I type, the cursor will suddenly reposition itself to some random place in my previous text. This problem started when the laptop was brand new (it's one year old). I've typed fast, I've typed slow. I've made sure my hand or thumb is not accidentally brushing the touch-pad. I've rebooted, I've reinstalled, all to no avail. Any suggestions? I cannot send the computer back to Dell at this point because I actually took out Vista and installed XP to see if it would fix. I reverted back to Vista, but I'm sure Dell would see what I did and the warranty would be void.

Current issue:

For a brief second or two, the screen blinks i guess (best way to describe it). Happens at random moments but lasts no longer than a couple of seconds. I have installed latest drivers (8400M GS) and updated Windows. Turned off a couple of features such as screen saver and such.

What can I do now? First time I experienced this issue with a laptop before and I am not to familiar with the inside of a laptop. Could this possible be a hardware issue or software?

I have recently acquired an old Dell 1720 laptop that didn't come with a charger. I did have one for an HP that has the same specs as the Dell (19v @ 20watts) and plugs into the Dell ok. It runs the laptop fine and it shows "charging" but the battery shows only 2 lights (partial charge) and is stuck there. Any thoughts?

A:Dell 1720 charger question

Your best bet is to buy a genuine Dell AC adapter, however you can check the status of the AC adapter and battery in the BIOS.

1. Power off computer, and then make sure AC adapter is connected to computer well
2. Power on computer, quickly start tapping the F2 key continuously, you should be in the BIOS screen.

Under the main screen, look for the AC adapter type. If the adapter says None or Unknown then it's an issue with the adapter. Suggest you replace AC adapter.
Under the Advanced screen, look for Battery Health, it should say "This Battery Is Performing Normally". If there's any other message, it could mean that the battery is faulty and needs replacement.

A friend gave this Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop that the hard drive had crashed. when I pulled the the hard drive out and installed a gently used hard drive into it, it would not start windows. It would look like it was going to start but before I could get to a desktop, it would restart. Not a big deal, but when I tried to go back to step one and install windows XP, the installation software acted like if did not have a hard drive in it. What I want to do at this point is reformat the drive and install a clean copy of Windows XP. Any help would be appreciated. Is there a setting in CMOS I need to address?

Hello all!

I want to report that I successfully installed Windows 7 Home Premium x64 on my Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop.

Only driver needed was latest Nvidea driver for Geforce 8600M GT.
You have to enable Aero manualy, I forgot how I did it ;-)

A very minor driver isue is still not solved, but overall everything works great.
Base System Device no driver

Experience Index 4.7, well I am satisfied with the way Windows 7 Feels and look.

Another thing I am investigating is why Windows Vista is still in the boot menu, and this while I deleted the vista partition and formated it before clean install.

Questions are always welcome, I will try to answer them.

Have a nice day!

I just realized that the dv9500t has the nvidia 8600M gs card, which is considerably slower than the 8600 GT.

I customized a dv9500t and for almost exaclty $2,000 it has:

17 inch screen
Intel T7500 Processor
200 GB 7200 RPM Hard drive (100 x 2)
Nvidia 512 MB 8600M GS

The Dell has:

17 inch screen
Intell T7500
250 GB 5400 RPM Hard drive
Nvidia 256 MB 8600 GT

The Dell was about 300 - 400 bucks more, but I can use the $350 off Dell coupon since it's an Inspirion which brings the price down to $2100 after taxes. So, both compuers have the new Santa Rosa T7500 processors, 200+ Gb Hard Drives, but the Dell has the 8600 Gt, as opposed to the 8600 Gs in the HP. I want to get the most out of the notebook I chose, so do you guys think it'll be worth spending a little more for the 8600 GT?

A:Hp dv9500t or Dell Inspirion 1720

I'm kind of looking to order tonight because I'll be on vacation the next two weeks.

I bought this 17" Dell Inspiron 1720 just over a year ago.
A week ago I was using it and everything was running just fine. I turned around to do something, for less than five minutes and when I returned the computer was turned off.

I pressed the power button, no power, no lights to indicate any power is going to the unit.
I checked my power supply, tried different power outlets to no avail. When I would plug the power supply in the green light would come on indicating the unit was working, but as soon as I plugged it into the back of the laptop, (when I put my ear to the power supply) there would be a little zap and the green light would go out.

Thinking it was the power supply, I had some friends bring over their Dell power supplies. The P-10, two prong power supply.
It did the same with theirs.

The next thing I checked was to see whether or not the battery had any power left.
It did. When I pressed the button on the back it had 5 lights indicating it was full.

So, before I go and have to more than likely shell out lots of money to someone to fix it, I would like to know if any one else has come across this same thing and what it may be.

A:No power on Dell Inspiron 1720

Remove the battery.
Plug in the power supply. Ensure the system is powered off.
Remove all external peripherals.
Press and hold the <Fn> key on the keyboard.
Continue to hold the <Fn> key while pressing the power button.
Release both buttons.

See if that works. If not, go here and run this diagnostic.

Hello all,

I have a minor problem.

When I am listening to music, sometimes the sound is distorted for a short period of time.
This also happens if I return from a break, and my display turns on when I move the mouse (while the music is still playing).

If I just listen to music, and don't do other things, it does not occur as far as I tested.

Below is the screen shot of the sound device driver I currently use:

Thanks in advance for teaching me.

have had a new dell computer since late dec. '07. worked fine(although i do not care for vista)until sunday morning. when i powered up the computer it went to a screen that said "windows recovory system" and gave me 4 options to start up. in safe mode, safe mode with networking and with command prompt. or to start it up normally. none of those worked. once past that screen, the screen just stayed dark with the white cursor showing in the middle. tried to fix by going in through the advanced boot options, repairs computer selection. tried to do a start up repair from there and that did not work. so, before i do a factory restore, has anyone heard of this problem happening? and if so, any solution idea's other than a factory restore? thanks All

Looking at the BSODs...I would start with a check of the hard drive itself.

Alright... here goes... I am trying to fix my brother-in-law's Dell Inspiron 1720 Laptop. He accidentally spilt water into it. And it wouldn't power on. I took everything apart and blew it dry. and I got it to where it will power on but not start up Windows. I also took out the harddrive and put it into my desktop to see if it was okay. It is fine, It starts up by itself and runs no problem. Once I put it back into the laptop, It finally got to the point where the Windows OS was loading. But, it would keep freezing on that screen. So, I took the HDD back out played around with a few things and when I put it back in, and now I can't get the OS to load at all again. Also, I am having a problem getting into the Bios. Before, It was a 50-50 shot of letting me into the bios. The Laptop would load all the way through the dell screen and go to a black screen with a blinking underscore. I want to try to go into the bios and set it to boot from the secondary HDD slot and just move the HDD over, cuz the first HDD slot may have gotten messed up with the water. Hello out there,
I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 running Vista Home Premium. I use Photodex Proshow Producer to author AV presentations using music and images. Ever since purchasing this laptop 17 months ago I have had problems with what I believe may be refresh rate. In the AV show transitions from one picture to another, in fact any slide activity involving motion, seems jerky, or flickery.

The computer is fitted with a NVIDIA GeForce Go 8600M GT graphics card with 256mb DDR2 dedicated memory. I am using a laptop screen resolution of 1440 x 900. In the Windows on-screen help files on refresh rate it recommends a rate of not less than 75Hertz, yet my screen is set at 60 Hertz and there appears to be no options for other rates to be selected.

Could it be the refresh rate that is causing this jerkyness of operation? If so is it possible to change the graphics card for one with a refresh rate greater than 75Hertz?

A:Refresh Rate with Dell Inspiron 1720

and welcome to the Forum

How much system RAM do you have? I doubt the refresh rate is the probloem, and it can't be changed at any rate. Have you installed the newest nvidia drivers?

If your trying to change a bios setting or Reformat any of the newer Dell Laptop's you may run into this issue! There is an Administrator password you will be prompted for. I believe this is created at the factory and unplugging the bios battery no longer does the trick! I tried many different passwords combos and found that:

<dell> all lowercase and minus the brackets works for a few of the newer Dell Laptops

Good Luck,

A:Dell Bios Admin Password/Inspiron 1720

That makes no sense at all. If it were true then Dell would have to provide the password as part of the information it provides to customers when they buy the laptop. Anything else would subject them to being sued.

Now the computer on startup has a black screen and will not boot up. None of the F keys will work. Keyboard was working fine until this error.

I decided to purchase a new hard drive. Installed the new drive and the computer is doing the same thing.

Any ideas?

A:Dell Inspiron 1720 Black Screen Will Not Boot

1) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

2) What do you mean the "laptop wouldn't let you" restore to factory settings?

3) What do you mean it "wouldn't load the restore disk"?

4) You replaced the drive and now have a blank hd in the system?

I purchased my laptop from Dell in November of 2007. In September of this year, the AC Adapter/Charger stopped working. (I would plug it in and the green light would not come on - on the adapter/charger). I got a replacement from Dell (after them sending me the wrong replacement twice!) and now it's not working!
Does this sound like a laptop issue or an adapter/charger issue? Dell keeps trying to tell me it's a laptop issue and my warranty expired last week.

Any help or ideas out there?

A:Dell Inspiron 1720 AC Adapter/Charger Problem

Get the PSU tested with a volt meter, if its outputting a voltage then the Mobo is faulty, as Dell failed to send you a replacement within the guarantee period you could argue its their fault and that had they sent you the correct PSU inside the warranty period then you would have know it was a Mobo issue and as such it would still have been covered by warranty, however as they delayed sending the correct part out your warranty expired....

Hello Again from the UK: I am stuck yet again and turn to you fantastic experts for some much needed help.
It started when my laptop would not switch on and I got an error message STOP:c000021a (Fatal System Error) the system has been shut down. Error Code 2000-0146. Msg unit 1: DST Log contains previous errors.Went through all the suggested repairs on the pc but to no avail
So I went to the superstore PC World and they told me it my Hard Drive needed replacing and it would cost the set price of £220.00 for them to undertake the repair. I thought this was a mega amount of money to replace a hard drive so I bought one and replaced it myself - it seemed a simple thing to do.
I had the original discs sent by Dell with the machine. I inserted the Windows Re-installation DVD and restated the Computer. Had to use the f12 key to load the Boot Menu and then highlight the CD/DVD drive. This worked and the programme seemed to be installing and went through menu options that I needed to complete. After some time it eventually reached a screen Installing Windows and went through Copied Files, Expanded Files, Installed Features, Installed Updates and Completing Installation and each had a green tick. It then said Windows needs to restart to continue and closed down and restarted. It then said in White on a Black screen Please wait a moment while Windows prepares to start for the first time. After a few minutes it went back to the Installing Windows screen with all the headings still tic... Read more

The GPU comes with 256MB so that's all that will be detected, the Turbocache drivers are no longer supplied with Windows 7 as most GPU's from yesteryear don't support Windows 7 out of the box, so the turbocache isn't available to utilize.

Hi Guys,

I read one of the threads here back in Jan of this year that is quite similar to my problem. The Bluetooth device driver keeps on turning off / on on its own. I'm using a wireless internet connection with a netgear router and it used to work fine for months. Problem started a week ago. I have Windows Vista Home Premium with SP2. Below are the items listed under the network adapters of device manager when my internet connection is fine:

1) Bluetooth Device (Personal Area Network) - (status is disabled)
2) Bluetooth Device (RFCOMM Protocol TDI)
3) Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller
4) Cisco Systems VPN Adapter - (status is disabled)
5) Intel (R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN

NOTE: No signs of a conflict like a yellow exclamation mark or X.

And here are the only ones listed when i lose connection:

1) Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller
2) Cisco Systems VPN Adapter - (status is disabled)
3) Intel (R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
Here are the things I have done:

1) Reinstalled the network drivers downloaded from Dell specifically:
Intel (R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller2) When the first 2 items are visible, i tried to check for updated drivers by right clicking on it and hitting Update Driver software but it gave me a message that its already updated.
3) Enabled items 1 and 4 to see if it will make a difference but not.

My laptop has had several problems recently, including having to get the keyboard replaced. Whenever I try to get on the laptop in normal mode it either rarely starts or is just a black screen. I started the laptop in safe mode in hopes to virus scan it and make sure everything is okay, but there was a slight problem. Every icon I clicked (Internet explorer, anti spyware, etc) it would pop up with a box on the screen and would show Adobe Reader and Internet Explorer in it saying "open with". Any ideas on how to fix this and make it so I can open icons regularly? Thanks!

A:Problem Openining Things on Dell Inspiron 1720 Laptop

Recently, my laptop has been starting to act weird. When trying to open most of the desktop icons or programs, a box pops up and says "open with" and then lists recommended programs like Adobe Reader and Internet Explorer. I tried restoring the computer to the last time it was normal, but that didn't fix anything. I can't open any virus scans or programs to check if a virus is causing this either. Does anyone have an idea about how i could approach this or give me some steps to take? Thanks in advance!

I have DELL Inspiron Laptop 1720 and it caused a Blue Screen of Death error within first couple of hours. I begugged the error in the two files that I am uploading. The first one says that it is because of some driver error and the second one which was debugged from Memory.dmp of about 300 MegaBytes also says in the middle that it was due to Memory Corruption as well.

Could someone please explain it more clearly to me which file is right and do I still need to check my Memory because the laptop is still brand new.

debuglog.txt has been debugged from mini040808-01.dmp of size 135K from windows\minidump folder.

debuglogmemorydmp.txt has been debugged from \windows\memory.dmp of size 300 MegaBytes.

Both of the \windows\minidump and \windows\memory.dmp belong to the same Blue Screen of Death Error.

The Blue screen of death was very quick and I did not get any chance to note down anything at all thats why I debugged them.

Then again yesterday I got one more Blue Screen of Death Error while restarting Windows and it was " IO System Verification error in HIDCLASS.SYS (WDM DRIVER ERROR 220) (HIDCLASS.SYS + 2484 at 909Af484).

Please help if the Blue Screens of Death belong to software or hardware problems.

Other than those two Blue Screens of Death the system has been working absolutely fantastic and I have not received any other error messages within the Windows Vista ever since I bought it on 08 April 2008.

Hello everyone.

I usually solve my PC problems, but this time I gave up. I am new in the forum. I go to grad school in Cedar Falls, IA. And last year I bought a Dell Inspiron that gave me a hard time ever since it came out of the box. Unfortunately I had to have it replaced a couple of times. THe last one they gave me seemed to be ok, but not until a couple of months, did I realize that the Wireless capabilities are not working. Dell's warranty already expired. and I don't know what hte problem is.

I've tried everything. I reinstalled windows and just installed the Wireless card that it has built in and it says that there is no connectivity.

The Wireless card is this model:

0xa = IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL = MS or kernel mode app accessed paged memory when it should not have (IRQL too high).

We'll get to wifi shortly - #1 right now is that you must install Vista SP1.

Please run the following to collect system info so I can help you get SP1 in. I wouldn't advise downloading it and install as there are prerequisite Windows Updates & other preps to be done.

Download Live SysInternals Autoruns from Microsoft TechNet and SAVE it to your DOCUMENTS folder. Next, download the attached zip and extract the batch file to your DESKTOP. Then go to desktop, right-click on the batch file and select Run as Administrator.

It will run for approx 5 minutes - you will see status screen. No interaction - just let it run. When finished, go to your documents folder and zip up the newly created folder named TSF_Vista_Support and attach to next post.

In the interim - please run the Vista Clean Manager -
START | type cmd.exe into the start search box | right-click on cmd.exe above under programs | select Run as Administrator | the black cmd prompt/"DOS" screen will appear - type cleanmgr tuneup - check boxes.

Now disk defrag. Use Auslogics - download and install. Go to desktop, right-click on Auslogics icon, select Run as Admin... Read more

The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer?

But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested.

About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used.

Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro?

I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course.

A:Win 7 Installer error code 1720

You should already have the latest version of the Installer.

You need to tell us more about when this fault occurs -- is it with all installs, or only just one. The message is of the type that usually points to an issue with a particular install package. Perhaps it is the wrong version

You may also wish to enable installer logging.

After enabling logging, locate the installer log created after an install failure by running %temp%. Search for and open the most recent "msi" log. (see screenshot). Upload that here as an attached file.

A:Upgrade Vostro 1720 or replace.

It's not worth upgrading this system - yes, the SSD will help but won't perform at its best because of the old controller.  Some things can be upgraded (CPU), others can't (video) and still others aren't worth upgrading (memory) because the type is obsolete.

Hello all,

I am trying to install Microsoft 7 from Vista. I've run into a series of problems.

-- I downloaded microsoft 7 from the microsoft online store
-- I can't complete the setup process until I update the BIOS -- error message is:
Windows cannot be installed on this computer with the current system BOIS versoin. Contact your computer manufacturer for a BIOS update, install the update, and then start windows instalation again. -- So, I went to dell and downloaded BIOS A09

-- I went to run it but I am told I have to be an administrator

-- After reading online how to be an admin of my own computer, I logged in as "safe mode" and try to run it again

-- now is where the fun starts -- I get a new error -- it tells me that it won't run due to a flash error, something like this:

BIOS Flash A09 Inspiron 1720

I've looked online but don't see a solution. I added ram and now have 4GB.

Hi and welcome

I also have a dell. first did the bios you have recognise the new ram? Second it seems to be better to have less ram when installing or flashing. did you get one of the dell ""exe" updates? the kind you double click and then it extracts the files and installs them? Just to be on the safe side DL again, and... Read more

A:Inspiron 1720 Graphics problem

I take it that the laptop is using the generic VGA drivers for your graphics controller.

Dell does not list any Windows 7 drivers, but you could try the Vista ones:

Drivers & Downloads

If they install, you may be able to update then via WIndows Update or with the latest drivers from

If the Vista drivers won't install, things get more complex. It's common for laptop makers to use custom device IDs for their graphics controllers, so standard installers may not recognize the controller.

Ok, so I bought my Inspiron about 2 months ago, but it has started to make weird noises coming from the fan. And they drive me insane.
Initially, I tough it was the hard drive and now I have a brand new hard drive brought to me by DELL, but after more examination there is no doubt that it is the fan.
Here are the details:

- the clicking can be heard only when the fans are on, and most notably when they are going slower
- the clicks are pretty inconsistent with each other and appear at random times
- the clicking disappears if I stop the fans with a program
- the clicking kinda disappears if I flip the notebook 360% - I believe that this guy has a similar problem

My question is - should I begin the dreadful process of contacting dell again, or do you, like me, think that it is a cable or something and that I should open the fan?

By the way, when I was opening to see my HDD there was 1 screw missing, so there is some doubt in my mind that the laptop wasn't assembled very thoroughly.

Wired connection is working, in the DM, the "Network Controller" has the Yellow question mark,  I tried all 5 drivers here:
but cannot get the wireless working, I moved the wireless switch to the right, does not light up. I looked on the net for help and found this:
"First check if the Wireless Switch is turned on. The switch is on left side of the system. Then check if you are able to detect wireless networks.
If that does not work, then I suggest you uninstall and reinstall the Wireless Card driver. To uninstall, click on start, right click on My Computer, click on properties, click on device manager, click on the + symbol next to Network, right click on Dell 1502 card and click on uninstall, click ok to confirm. Once its removed, do no restart your computer, click on the below link to download and install the updated driver, and then restart your computer."
When I click on the + sign next to "Network Adapters", I am only seeing "Broadcom 440x10/100 Integrated Controller", help please?

Sounds like the switch may be bad. Have you tried a little USB WiFi adapter? They're pretty cheap.

Desperation is an understatement. UPto two days ago, my Inspiron 1720 with Windows Vista Home Premium pack 1, worked like magic. Then OUTLOOK hung and stopped responding, until re-launched, followed by Wndows Explorer, Task Manager failed to load, Backup/Restore page loaded but was blank, the Network/Internet wifi connection stopped working and vanished. None of the SAFE boot up versions load. On Dell's test programme it hangs at Memory Event Log Status Test. Windows Explorer can work most of the time on the basis of lottery!
Please, please help.
Kind regards,

A:Progressive loss of function on Inspiron 1720

Welcome to TSF, sorry to hear your system is causing so much havoc....

Hanging at Memory Event Log Status Test and never completeing would make me suspect faulty memory. I would first remove the ram and then replace, could have had chip creep....if this does not fix the issue try Try Windows Memory Diagnostic Test

The Windows Memory Diagnostic tests the Random Access Memory (RAM) on your computer for errors. The diagnostic includes a comprehensive set of memory tests. If you are experiencing problems while running Windows, you can use the diagnostic to determine whether the problems are caused by failing hardware, such as RAM or the memory system of your motherboard. Windows Memory Diagnostic is designed to be easy and fast. On most configurations, you can download the diagnostic, read the documentation, run the test and complete the first test pass in less than 30 minutes.

Or you can try memtest

Try one of those, please post back the results.

I put a new hard drive in my 4 year old Inspiron 1720 laptop. I installed the Windows Vista operating system. Discovered after it was installed that I was supposed to install the Dell Media Direct BEFORE the OS. Found instructions online how to install Media Direct if OS already installed. Instructions I followed:

1. turn on computer. Press F12 repeatedly during startup until "Preparing one-time boot menu" appears.
2. insert Dell MediaDirect CD and arrow down to "CD/DVD", press enter.
3. choose your preferred hard drive partition option. (I selected Option 1, to designated all hard drive to OS.)
4. remove the MediaDirect CD.
5. insert Windows Operating System CD and reboot computer. Press F12 again for the boot menu. Arrow to CD/DVD again and press enter to begin installation process.

This is the furthest I could get. It will install Media Direct successfully, but then I put the OS disk in and hit enter and all it shows on the upper left corner of the screen is; "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD...." It does NOTHING when you "press any key". I've tried to just install the OS and it does the same thing. I have NO IDEA what else I can do. Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

If the computer is booted normally, the screen is corrupt during BIOS self-test and then turns completely black when Windows runs.
If the Fn key is pressed to do a diagnostic boot, the screen is corrupt at first.  When the screen is supposed to turn blue with white text for memory testing etc., the screen is black.  When the VGA test starts, the audio tones can be heard.  The VGA test falls back to displaying solid colours instead of stripes.  At that time the screen actually shows the solid colours, changing from each colour to the next, but no text.
What part needs replacing?

A:How to fix Inspiron 1720 video / graphics / display?

The video card needs to be replaced.  There are two -- the nVidia 8400GS and the 8600GT.  Both of these are well known for faulty engineering (nVidia settled a class action years ago regarding these) -- though you can probably still find them around, bear in mind they're all used and likely to fail again, even if you replace the card.

I lost the hard drive on one of my Compaq d530 computers, and have obtained a replacement drive. I am operating with Windows XP Professional and used the Windows disk management to format the new drive. When I installed the replacement drive and turned on the computer I got the following message:

"1720 - SMART Hard Drive detects imminent failure
Your hard disk drive is detecting an imminent failure. To ensure no data loss, backup contents and replace this hard disk."

I have tried this several times with the same result. If I hit F1 to select the disk as the boot location the screen has a curser in the upper left hand corner of the screen and nothing else happens. Is there something else required to be able to install Windows from my installation CD?

A:Error Message 1720 Smart drive ...

I'm actually typing this from the exact same type of PC.

Did the "original" drive fail...why did you have to replace the drive?

Is the replacement drive faulty by any chance, or is it a new drive?

Have you checked the IDE cable as well as the connection to/from the motherboard?

i have recently experienced this problem for the first time and researching the internet has got me very worried

i run a maxtor 53073h4 hardrive, i also run a 80gb portable hardrive which has all my documents on it

basically my questions are

-is there anything that can be done, and what do i need to do to fully diognose?
-the maxtor hardrive has windows on it, so if it crashes can i back windows up somewhere else as i haven't got the original disk, and can't afford a new one?
-can i just by a new hardrive and are they expensive to install?
-is it possible to transfer windows over to my USB portable hardrive and run it through that?

thanks for the answers in advance, sorry for the wordy question

A:1720 hardrive detects iminent failure

Download Seatools to verify that your drive is in fact dying.

There are programs you can use to create a backup image of your entire drive. Programs like Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image (though these programs are usually not free).

New harddrives are relatively cheap, and are a breeze to install yourself, or should be cheap to have someone else install.

It is possible to transfer your windows to the USB drive, but someone else will have to help with that as it would take me a while to walk you through it since I have never done it myself.

I've seen this problem on this forum but can't find anything that I haven't tried yet. Here’s my problem; I've spent the last 3 weeks talking with Dell to resolve the issue. They have taken remote access, replaced my mother board and Ethernet cable + I have made numerous changes with Dell guidance and nothing has worked. I have also talked to my service provider who replaced my router and still nothing.

I am now at the point where i still have the DNS look up issue and neither Dell or my service provider are accepting responsibility for the fault..........
My only work around is to unplug my Ethernet cable and plug back in. This seems to interrupt a signal and get me on line.
I would really appreciate your help.

A:dell vista loaded on top of vaio vista

The Dell DVD probably overwrote your VAIO recovery partition. You can try to invoke it - usually with F10 key during boot-up. If not you will need replacement recovery DVDs from Sony. HP charges about USD $25.

Good morning. Greetings from Cape Town

I have been using new 160 GB 2.5 IDE WD Scorpio Laptop Hard Drive 160 2.5" in an external USB caddy while I have been sorting out the programmes and data on my Fujitsu Siemens Amilo LI 1720.

The hard drive has been working well and I now want to install in the laptop to replace the existing 80GB WD Scorpio hard drive.

I've checked through all the necessary steps to be taken to physically change the drive and have used WD's Lifeguard to partition the drive as well as copy the boot information and programme files.

The one point which I'm not clear on and which I hope somebody can help with an answer is: How do I get Windows XP to recognise the new drive as the C:\ drive so that the programme settings and registry are retained ?

At the moment using the 160GB on a USB port Windows recognises it as either F:\ or G:\ and I seem to remember from some time ago that Windows will not allow a change of name or path for the system boot drive.

Is there a simple solution or do I have to start from a completely new Windows installation ?

Hope you can help.

Best wishes

A:Installing new hard drive on FSC Amilo LI 1720 laptop

You may have great difficulty doing this... Windows XP is controlling, and it may detect the hard drive as an install moved from one computer to another, and shut down as part of the Microsoft Anti-piracy security.
If it does that, you will not get it to do anything using a restore or recovery disc set. You need to install it as a new install after saving all the data to a cd or flash drive.

I have an Hp pavilion ze4600 laptop. When the computer starts I get a

"SMART Failure Predicted on hard disk 0: Toshiba MK4025GAS-(PM)"
"1720 At least one driver attribute has exceeded the maufacturers threshold, please run Drive Self Test in ROM setup"

When I run the Drive self test in the BIOS I recieve the Error "07 Fail"

Also, the user said that the computer would easily freeze and she would have to restart it manually with the power switch.

I don't want to buy a new Hard drive if her computer is going to keep freezing. If that is the case it might be time to buy a new laptop. I can't seem to find any results on an "07 fail" error either. I just thought I would post and see what you uys think. Is it worth buying a new HDD or is this laptop almost dead?

Answer Match 39.06%

Well, I finally bought a new harddrive to replace my failing drive, however when I tried to use the Data Lifeguard tools to duplicate the data from the old drive to the new one, it failed! The drive (so far) still works, though access time is slow, and all sighs show that its starting to fail (the HD diognostic disk showed that the data error ratio and seek time are in the critical range).

Now, roughly 80% of the data on the drive I dont really care if it is lost, since most of the data is programs that I still have the original cds for and can just as easily re-install. However, the other 20% is data I do not have backed up (Yes yes I know, im stupid for not making backups) in any way, and I really dont want to loose, data like school projects, passwords, accounts, personal art/programming projects, etc. THIS data I cannot afford to loose if I can help it. (And data recovery is out of the question, I coule buy three new pcs for the price of one standard data recovery)

Now that you know the background of my problem, heres my questions

1. I started a through scandisk (itll take a few hours, the drive is 80 GB). Smart idea or Stupid idea on a drive that is near-failure?

2. I know there is no DEFINATE time, but roughly how much time do I have until the drive fails so bad that I cant even access the data on it anymore?

3. If even after the scandisk I cant duplicate the drive, my next plan is to make it master and my new drive the slave, then to manually drag and copy the cri... Read more

A:1720: Detected Hard Drive Failure Imminent

Just a thought, rather than strain the old drive. Put the new one in as master (for now leave the old one unhooked but set it to slave while in there). Install all your software on the new drive. Once this is done, hook the old one as a slave and copy your data to the new one. The old one could fail at any time and this may be the best chance of saving the data.

I purchased my inspiron 1720 about four years ago and just replaced the keyboard with part (nsk-d8001).  The keyboard looks identical to my old one except that it has what I assume to be a backlight ribbon sticking out from underneath. Where does this ribbon go? I don't see an obvious location for it and my old keyboard didn't have this ribbon. Can the inspiron 1720 support a backlit keyboard?

I don't think that system ever had the option of a backlit keyboard, no.
