Solved: Take Ownership program doesn't work :(

Q: Solved: Take Ownership program doesn't work :(

Hi everyone .... I have this Take Ownership installed and I still have a problem to save a new stationary in my Statioanry directory.

It still tells me I am not authorized to save in this Stationary directory. It tells me I have to ask Administrator to do it. You can assume - it's solely my computer and nobody else use except me. Oh God this Vista is such a pain in the neck.

What else can I do? I don't want to log in as Administrator - it messes up some of the system settings.

Please help!!!

Thanks a million.

Pretty self explanatory lol. I'm trying to completely rid myself of Adobe Flash, but I'm not important or smart enough to own my own mind or computer, I need Microsoft to mismanage it all for me. As such when I get to the first step of the uninstallation guide posted by Adobe:

choose ?Run?, and paste the following directory path into the field and click ?OK?:

C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash

You then get 4 folders:
Flash.ocx
FlashInstall.log
FlashUtil_ActivX.dll
FlashUtil_ActiveX.exe

And when you TRY to delete them, you are told: You require permission from TrustedInstaller to make changes

So in short, I'm not competent enough (according to MS) to remove files that are and have been directly linked to hacks. Don't use Adobe, but we won't let you get rid of it......

Anyway, I found a cool little program from HOWTO GEEK that makes it easy to transfer ownership.

Anyone use it? Does it work?

A:Does the *Take Ownership* program from howtogeek work?

Nevermind. I did not realize there was a version here. I used it and it worked.

Is it the same program as over at HowToGeek?

I tried to take ownership of ProgramData - a folder in my C drive - to install VMWare because it gave me a security error. Now I can't use Windows Search from the Start Menu, and I think I got an error somewhere related to ProgramData while I tried to fix it. Indexing is not running, according to the Indexing Options window. So I think I need to "un-take" ownership of the ProgramData folder. Is there a way to "untake" ownership of a folder?

A:Un-take ownership of program data folder so search can work???

The initial taking ownership involved changing permissions from the Windows administrator to user admin account. The most likely process would be going back to change ownership back to the system admin taking it away from the user admin in a reverse proceedure.

You will likely to see a full system restart once the change is made to see put into effect. Once you right click on the main folder itself for the properties screen>Security tab and proceed to the Advanced button and open up the owner tab you then simply highlight the system administrator and click apply to make the change back.

If I try to open any Help Files (the little document with a yellow ?)...it freezes, with a "Not Responding" sign....this happens with any help file....ZoneAlarm Pro Help won't work...AVG help won't work...IZArc Help File won't work...

I'm not an expert, but I assume the "Help Viewer" is a Microsoft Program and these programs just write a file that can be opened using the "Help Viewer" So I guess I need a new Help Viewer? I have my XP Pro Installation CD...so if I have to fire it up and replace certain files, I can do that.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Okay, here's a good one that I've come across and I'm sure there is an expert among all of you that can tell me how to do this. I have a Warpia device (to show my screen on the TV). Now before I install the software, when my computer's screen goes black (I guess asleep), and I touch the touch pad it wakes up and says "What Do You Want To Do". So we are on our merry way. However, if I install the software to the Warpia to watch something on my large TV screen instead of my computer screen (mostly a movie that the wife wants to watch as well), I have to install the software. When the movie is over with, I have to uninstall it so the next time my screen goes black all I have to do is touch the touch pad. If I don't unstall the software, then I have to hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to get to the task manager and hit cancel. So my question is, is there away to run this software without actually installing it or what can I do?

A:Program/Drivers Doesn't work well

Have you asked the support folks for the Warpia device for assistance?

Rio Music Manager is the program I usually use to transfer music from my computer to my mp3 player but now it's not working. I reboot my computer maybe once every couple of months because I heard that's good for cleaning it and after I re-install Rio Music Manager after the reboots, it always works except when I rebooted my computer a few weeks ago and tried re-installing the Rio Music Manager again.. everything went fine until the second time my computer restarted and after clicking "Finish installing" or something like that.. it said it failed and told me to check these files:

D:\RIOMM\SETUP_FILES\RIOLDRV.INF
C:\SBDRIVERS\RIOLDRV.INF

When I copy & pasted them both under Start -> Run... for the first one, it said "please insert a CD into Drive D" and for the second one, a notepad opened up with a VERY VERY long bunch of words and stuff..

Any help? thank you!

My comp came with Drive Image Special Edition (DISE) pre-installed. To begin, DISE creates a "D" partition. My "D" partition is large, 5 GB. Most of it is free space, DISE only takes up about 25 MB. 1st question I have is does DISE reserve this 5 GB for it's exclusive use?? If I were to run low on disk space, would I be able to access this 5 GB??

DISE for me is useless. I have Trend Micro software that does a nice job of backing things up. I attempted to uninstall DISE using the supplied uninstall program. There are several screens to wade through, but ultimately, you get to a screen which says "Do You WIsh To Uninstall DISE?" There is a box in which you must type "YES". Then a message pops up saying that the uninstall program must be run within a DOS environment and that all open programs will be terminated. Then there is a "Do you wish to proceed" message with a yes/no button to click. It is at this point that the uninstall program stops...nothing happens. I've tried running this several different times with no luck.

DISE was made by PowerQuest. They were acquired by Symantic. The Symantic site offers no help whatsoever, since it's a program they no longer support.

How can I SAFELY remove the DISE software?? BTW, the uninstall program says that the D partition will not be removed, even when using the factory uninstall program.

I have a program that I can't uninstall. I get an error message "Cannot open INSTALL.LOG". The log is right there, in the same folder as the uninstaller. I tried both add/remove programs in control panel, and running the uninstaller directly. Same error, both ways. I also tried to reinstall first over the existing program. No luck.

So I figure that I'll just delete it manually, but would like to ask if I am forgetting anything.

Delete the folder in Program Files

Run a search for both the program name and the company name, and delete all files

(Optional, I suppose:) Run a registry search for both the program name and the company name, and delete all keys. (I'm guessing that if I don't, the program will continue to be listed in the add/ remove programs list.)

Would that about cover it? Or might someone have a completely different idea? Thank you to all who take the time to reply.

An additional thought: Could the information in the INSTALL.LOG be of help to me?

A:Uninstall A Program Whose Uninstaller Doesn't Work

Read all the text files in the program's directory - it may give you clues as to where and what the program installed.

Next, remember to backup everything (files and registry entries) before you delete it! A manual removal can hose your system if you're not familiar with the structure of the OS.

My Brother is having a heck of a difficult time with his new ACER Aspire 9420 laptop computer. I have the same model that was bought at the same time. I'm not pleased with mine, however I am not having the same kind of problems he is experiencing.

After having a problem running programs, he decided that he had to use the backup OS disk that was recommended to be made so that he could restore his computer to the initial factory condition of the computer. After inserting the DVD he made with the back up program on it, he found that it wouldn't run or be recognized. Why would ACER have suggested that such a disk be made, if it will not run when you need it?

Anyone having the same problem? How do you correct this?

I was running Microsoft Security Essentials when it just froze 1/2 way through a quick scan. The mouse still could move, clicking to stop or close out didn't do anything either. Also Ctrl + Alt + Delete also did nothing. I waited 5 minutes. Nothing. Had to pysically shut down.

Other times I have not been able to click start > shut down. Sometimes I can wait a minute or two and finally things will work again.

Is this indicative of some other process running? Possible a virus? RAM problem? Could a motherboard going bad cause this? Also this customer's BIOS became corrupted for some reason, as the computer would not start before I reseated the battery to get the computer to start again. The battery tested normal at 3.06 V. So I'm still trying to rule out hardware.

Hi!
I'm having a problem with a laptop (DELL Vostro 1510 - Windows 7 Professional 32bit)
The computer was infected by a Rogue like a year ago, I took it to a computer repair shop, and fixed it.
Few months later I started having issues with IE, works fine for an hour or two, and then (The program stopped responding)... until it was doing it all the time.

Took it back to the computer repair shop, and did a clean up, and uninstalled IE, and reinstalled it.
It was working fine for two weeks... and then it started to do it again.
I use IE for a few hours, or minutes (Random) and then IE Stopped responding!

I downloaded SF Diagnostic Tool
But after I run it (From desktop) as an administrator, and click on GRAB ALL, I have that error message:
(I disabled Norton antivirus) so I can't even post the log...
Can you please help me find out about that issue? or what do I have to do from now?

I'm on a friend's computer right now, who uses a dropbox system which works in conjunction with a sound recorder. (The person record whatever he or she needs to record, they save it, which means it sends to whomever the dropbox was made for, which in this case is his/her professor. DAMN THEM PROFESSORS :3)

Usually he/she tries to use the program and the sound recorder, which works or doesn't work, but causes all audio on the computer to fail.

When the friend came to me for help, on a freak accident, the microphone/dropbox system worked, and kept all audio intact and sound. So I know the sound is working or able to work.

Another interesting thing about this problem is that ALL audio programs do not work. This doesn't just affect the browsers, this also affects Windows Media Player, which now refuses to play sound files that used to be able to be played because it says it can't play that kind of file.

Please help. :3

A:Adobe Flash Player runs program, then sound doesn't work

That does seem to be Microsoft's idea of maximum protection. It isn't necessary to access the net as an administrator. It is safer to have a separate user account as it limits the damage caused by malware. Using the smart screen filter and in private browsing helps. Firefox with NoScript and the HTTPS Everywhere add-on is safer than Internet Explorer. There is no guaranteed security.

Hi Seven Forums,

First post here, and I think it's a fairly complicated one. Thank you wonderful people in advance for your kind consideration.

When I try to run certain system programs such as SDCLT.EXE, my little Take Ownership shortcut program pops up saying SUCCESS: the file (or folder) is now owned by the Administrator group.

Backstory: I've had terrible permissions issues with this Win 7 install from the get-go and they persist no matter what I do. Recently I was trying to run an installer program for a game I used to play and the installer couldn't get the permissions it needed. I'm running as admin and every option I have to take ownership has been taken (I'm fairly positive). I tried to take even more ownership of C: and everything else, and since that time there are a few system programs which no longer run when their buttons are clicked. Instead, the Take Ownership program which many people have installed for their context menu runs, followed by nothing happening.

Main goal: my backup of D:, imaged by system restore on E:, no longer functions because Win7 says the disk is too full. But when I try to run SDCLT to clean it up or explore my options, the above occurs.

I'm considering resetting all the permissions using the instructions here, but I'm too unclear about what I'm doing to go any further (and potentially do more harm).

Sorry this is so long-winded and perhaps there should be more than one thread, but I don't know how to categorize all the ... Read more

This is not my work but that of a Dutch chappy called Riso, I have installed it on my system & works a charm. 1 word of advice though, make sure you gaive your system a damned good clean as this will reduce processing time for allowing permission checking!
Anyway, this is the text & instructions that Riso wrote.

Although Microsoft's new OS "Windows 7" is already very fast and reliable, here is a registry script which can tweak a few internal settings to optimize your system performance and add a few useful extras.

You just need to run the .reg file.
It'll ask for confirmation, accept it.
Restart your system to take affect and you'll definitely experience the tweaking affect.

If you are worried what this registry script is going to do in your system, then here is a description of all the tweaks included in this file:

Adds "Copy To" and "Move To" options in files and folders context menu, so that you can easily copy and move them to other locations.
Sets Windows to automatically end task of programs which are either hanged or taking longer time than expected to exit.
Decreases menus show delay time, it'll show the sub-menus fast when you select their parent menu.
Disables the low disk space check so that you don't get the annoying low disk space notification in system tray.
Sets Windows to not waste time in searching for a program which no longer exists in your system when you try to open its shortcut.

Hey,

So, I'm trying hard not to be shaky and angry about this. After all, if I want to screw up my personal computer, who is Microsoft to blatantly stop me?

Anyway, I'm just trying to optimize the storage on my personal laptop. I have a SSD that's currently running the whole freaking computer which it does not need to be doing. I have another smaller SSD that I want to have running my Windows while my current SSD runs everything else (programs and storage). Currently, my old HD is acting only as storage.

I know I've put too much on my current SSD to simply copy it to my other SSD, so I'm trying to clear it off a bit and make my old HD do everything that I want my SSD to be doing. So, I've changed my "new apps" folder to a folder that Windows created for me on my HD.

The problem is that I have no access whatsoever to this folder that Windows made. I can see it (the outside of it)...that's it. So, I looked up some tutorials and went about changing all kinds of settings on this folder. By all appearances (even according to Win 10), I have FULL control over that folder. However, that's just how it looks; like gilding a turd, it's still just a turd.

I tried taking ownership on the folder as well as changing permissions in the "Auditing" tab of the window that allows you to change ownership. Nothing that should have worked has worked.

I am a gamer and a programmer. The odds that I'm going to screw something up on my computer are actually quite astronomical... Read more

Hi guys,

I got a nice network running on a Belkni Pre-N wireless router which works just fine.

Or it did.

My PC is conecting to the wireless network through three walls using a wireless adapter, and everything is working fine...

Or it did.

I should be able to type \\computername and get a folder with all the shared folders on there... There are many shared folders...I know this because they work from other PCs, but I can't connect from mine. I have a good internet connection, and the wireless connection is excellent. Netsupport Manager works fine (i can control all the other computers), but I can't send files and receive files using windows file sharing. Advanced file sharing is enabled...I just don't get it! Why can't I see any other computers in the workgroup folder?

Help please!

I'm having this problem with a desktop running Windows XP (AMD 64X2 Dual) using integrated sound. I tried using Ventrilo but no sound resulted so I borrowed a friend's headset that I know works and still, no voice. I've tested it using the sound recorder and also tried setting it up (control panel, sound and audio devices, voice, test hardware). The only times anything comes up in either test is when I use my nail to tap on the mic. I've checked my audio settings, my microphone and line in are both unmuted and turned all the way up.

...am I missing something?

Since I reinstalled windows xp, every time I plug in a mouse in any usb port it doesn't work. It will say "Found new hardware", "usb optical mouse-blah", and then I can control it for half-a-second until it says "your hardware is installed and ready to use", then I can't move it. Is it automatically installing the wrong driver? Can I manually install it?

I send mail to numerous people simultaneously, many times with one or more embedded links. One of the recipients complains that the link does not work, i.e., it does not re-direct to the linked site. No one else has any problems with the link, and the person who complains has no problems with other links.
Is there someplace I can look, or something I can do to find and fix the problem??

Hello, I was just adding a new DVD drive to my desktop computer and just took it out to my patio, put it in, and then closed it back up. I blew inside the tower a little to get some of the dust out. After, I tried starting my computer and then the monitor didn't work. It could not detect the computer and nothing happened. The computer was up and running (from what I saw) but the monitor wasn't working.

At first, I thought it was the monitor, so I tried a different monitor on the computer, but that didn't detect the computer also.

So then I thought it was the graphics card, but I realized my graphics card is an integrated graphics card.

So, I just put in another graphics card, plugged the monitor into that output, but it still didn't work.

I don't know what's going on, could somebody please help?

Hi -

i have a new Vista system (from Dell), but the screensaver doesn't work. I don't really "need" it, but i use it occassionally.

Also, the power management features don't work in regard to the monitor either. This i do like to use .... but the monitor just won't turn off unless i use the button on the front.

The monitor is a bit older (maybe 2 years old), a FP193 or something like that. Dell doesn't have a updated driver for it, so i guess i can understand the power features not necessarily working, but shouldn't the screensaver still work regardless?

The monitor driver is the generic driver that comes with Vista.

Any suggestions?

I use Verizon “My Yahoo” as my home page. I have it customized the way I like, but a few weeks ago parts of it stopped working. The links, which open a new page, work fine. However, the tabs, which take me to a new part of the same page, get a spinning wheel and never seem to load. The odd thing is that the very same page works fine on my husband’s computer.

I have deleted cookies, browsing history, etc. and reset IE to default settings. I also disabled all add-ons and used Microsoft’s Fixit tool. Nothing helped.

XP PRo on all networked PCs

Normally, when one right clicks on a drive letter having opened 'My computer', then select 'Sharing' there is a warning about sharing a whole disk and the option to accept anyway.

One laptop doesn't offer that. It just shows the admin share of C$ immediately. If I choose 'New' at the bottom of the panel a new drive letter and drive name can be entered but it can never be accessed over the network! It shows up in the workgroup but I get a network error - 'Network path not found' if I try to access it. I can ping the laptop from anywhere by name and IP address. The laptop can access all the other PCs without any problem.

Help please - this is driving me up the wall!

We are running a very large macro in Excel 2010. There is a line of code that deletes the comments from certain cells:

cells([row],[column]).ClearComments

This line has been in place for almost a year with no problems. Suddenly, it has stopped executing after a certain function is called. We step through the code and the line is hit but does not clear the comments. There is no error message. It seems like some condition may be in place preventing this command from executing but I can't find anything online that disables .ClearComments or prevents it from working. It does work when we don't call that function. The function is quite complex (and has been in place for a long time) so it's not simple to find what's happening there to cause this.

The address of the cell is correct.
It is not related to events being disabled.
Screenupdating is not turned off.
The cell is not locked.
The sheet is not protected.

Is there anything that can cause the .ClearComments command to not work?

We can change it to Comment.Delete but that's a band-aid. We want to know why suddenly .ClearComments is not executing (and this is occuring in various areas of the program).

I suppose this is a general computer issue but beings my operating system is XP I thought I would put it here.

Anyway, my mouse doesn't work. It doesn't appear on the screen as if it wasn't plugged in at all. However the activation light on the mouse itself is on (and I have since tried two different mouses and they have all had the same issue)

I've heard it may be my USB port, however when I tried plugging it into the 'other mouse port' (sorry my tech names are bad .. the circle plug with the prongs inside of it) I am presented with the same problem.

If I got to the mouse Properties it tests me that "This Device is working properly" but still no mouse has appeared on my desktop? Previously it told me that there was a corruption in the device (code 33 I believe)? but that problem has remedied itself some how.

If someone could help me, or point me in the right direction I would be thankful. I am an avid user of Photoshop and MS Paint, and its aggrivating that I cannot use these products because the mouse doesn't work. Im thinking that it would be good if you could plug the mouse into another computer to make sure its not just a defective mouse. Do you happen to have the disk that came with any of the mice youve tried? If not can you tell me the make and model of the mouse so I can find you the drivers for it? Have you tried plugging the USB mouse into another USB port and rebooting? Perhaps its the USB port itself causing the problem. When was the last time the mouse worked correctly? Have you installed any new programs since then?
Try to answer these questions, and Ill check back in awhile to see your response.

Something about "java script" flashes at bottom of window but doesn't stay long enough to read. He can select any of the other options from the initial page and the window loads with no problem. He has used this site for over 2 years without any problems until now.
He contacted the site's web master and he trouble shot it and told him he needed Java and had him install it. It still doesn't work. I recently uninstalled the SoundMax sound management program to fix a crackling/popping noise i was experiencing with my sound card. The problem was solved but now I am having an even stranger issue...

my mic "line in" is somehow software rerouted to the sound output, the sound still plays through my headphones though, and the mic wont accept any input. Not sure if thats very clear but its the best way I can think to describe it.

another oddity, the microphone will pick up the sound output regardless if the actual mic plug is plugged in or not, so this leads me to believe it is not a microphone problem, but that I have something set wrong or something is wrong with my drivers

I have discovered that the mic problems only occur when i do not have the SoundMax sound management program installed // installing that however brings back my sound popping and distorting problem that I had before... I have tried it a couple of times both ways and windows refuses to let my mic function without that program that causes sound distortion

I have tried basically every fix for both problems I can find on the net, but i have been so far unsuccessful

anyone have any ideas or ever heard of anything like this? any help would be greatly appreciated... its driving me mad

I have been trying so hard to get the following ports to work:

5120 - 5300

I have looked up countless guides, and have done everything in them, I have a static IP, I used the gateway to create the port forwarding rule, AND opened the ports on the windows firewall.

Nothing works. The port remains closed, and I can't host games.

What am I doing wrong?

Hi, I am new to this site so I may not give all the info necessary but if you let me know what you need to answer this question I will get it right back to you. Thanks.

Ok here is my question: My friend gave me his computer while he is away and after I hooked everything up I tried to find a folder on his computer using the "Start" "Search". Can anyone tell me how to restore this? This computer was custom built so I am not sure of what exactly has been done.

Welcome to TSG!
Have a look and see if the computer has the utility Tweakui installed on it. If so open tweakui and go to Desktop tab and make sure there is a check-mark in the search results box.
If not there are two way to handle this:
1) Download and setup Tweakui and follow the above instruction
http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/NTTweakUI.asp
2) Open the registry editor and have a look for this entry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Value Name: NoFind

If "NoFind" exists modify the value to "0" zero

My internet explorer says cannot display page. It is acting like it doesn't see the internet connection. Firefox works just fine. Run the windows diagnose and it says everything is working properly. Other programs such as AVG and malwarebytes cannot connect to update. Other programs that are supposed to sync with the web, like picasa, can't find internet connection either. Running vista 64 bit. Been researching the problem online but have not found many things similar. Any ideas?

My wireless adapter connects fine when my pc boots except if I try to download a large file or run a full screen program that uses connection, the adapter stops working and won't detect any networks, if I try to configure it when it doesn't work...my com will turn itself off and turn back on. I downloaded a newer driver, resetted my router, but the problem is still there.

I decided it was about time to upgrade my slow computer for games, especially since it had built in graphics.

I ordered a HIS Radeon 4670 card, based on reviews it was good for my budget and most of the reviews were positive.

First, I upgraded my slow sempron 3400+ to a 5600 x2, about the fastest cpu I can use with my motherboard with low wattage in-mind (I think it's 65 watt). This seemed to install fine, but the video card did not apparently. (unless it doesn't work with my montor?)

All I know is, I plugged the video card in the PCIE slot and get no output signal to my monitor with it. It is an older CRT monitor (Samsung SyncMaster 955df) and I never read they wouldn't work with newer cards, but I guess it's possible?

Anyway, the card doesn't have the VGA pin for my monitor, but it came with an adapter.
When I hook up the adapter there are 2 slots that it fits into and neither one will display a video signal, when I boot my computer. I tried uninstalling the built in graphics drivers and also disabling the on-board graphics in device manager. Neither one has fixed my problem. I've tried to contact customer support but there is no number on the web site except for one in China!

I noticed the fan came on on the card, but I'm still worried because XP doesn't even seem to detect it. I hope I didn't get a broken card, but if it is I need to hurry up and send it back. Any advice?

The internet doesn't work on my Windows XP computer and I think it's because of BitDefender. I think it changes a setting somewhere in Windows that screws it up or something. I've had problems before with BitDefender disrupting the internet, and I'm pretty sure that's what's happening to me now.

The internet worked before I installed BitDefender -- I had to download it afterall. But as soon as it was installed the internet stopped working. The internet works on other my other computer, and I can make Google searches and get the results instantly, but if I try to go to any other website it fails to bring it up and eventually times out.

I ended up uninstalling BitDefender and it still doesn't work -- probably sounds silly to blame BitDefender still, eh? But I think it changed something, and Windows security still thinks I have BitDefender. There must be a setting somewhere that is messed up, but I can't figure out what it is. I'm going to screw around with IE a little more and then reformat the hard-drive. Does anyone recognize this problem and have suggestions about what to do about it?

I am a devoted user of 'SeaMonkey.' That browser opened my Hotmail account without a hitch for years. Then, overnight, what appeared was just an abbreviated menu at the left in vertical format.

I just finished reading the Hotmail problems of others posted here at TSG. "A light came on" that maybe Hotmail now required the use of IE. I was right. At least I can now open Hotmail in a view that is much like before. I recognize that MS has "improved" Hotmail, but that doesn't affect me.

I'll just have to change browsers to open Hotmail.

Doubleclick the volume icon near your clock. Then click on Options | Properties. Tick all boxes and OK. Make sure all vilumes are up to maximum, and that none of the balences are in the middle.

Also, this may work, as its online:

Go to Control Panel | Internet Option. General tab. Under Delete Files, delete offline content.

Weird. I'm running Windows XP. This morning I find that I cannot copy text from my browser and paste to MSWord. There is no problem within Word (that's why I am posting this in Web & E-mail), but I cannot copy & paste from Firefox, IE, or Google Chrome. I suppose this could be a virus, but I suspect that it's a simple setting somewhere--can someone identify this?

Hi all
I wanted to do a system restore but it didn't work.
My computer has two hard drives, C:\ and D:\ and a CD drive E:\, I also plug a portable hard drive into it from time to time that shows up as F:\.
So I try to run system restore and it brings up a warning that it will not be able to change anything on F: because it is no longer available (I think that was the massage, something like that anyway), okay it was not plugged into the computer so I click to go ahead with the restore. The computer looks like it's doing its restore thing, tha bar graph runs and all but when it should be finished it tells me nothing was changed so pick an earlier restore dat and try again so I did that, same F: drive warning, same results. I plug the portable disk in and try again, same thing.
How can I get the System Restore to work???

Thanks in advance

Have a friend I'm trying to help set up a new Toshiba Core i5 laptop w/6GB RAM. Have tried to download and install Google Earth 3 times, and removed it 3 times using Revo Uninstaller. It installs with no errors popping up, but when you enter an address and click Search, the globe just sits there. I have run boot-time* and regular scans with Avast and with Malwarebytes. Neither find anything.

I had this same thing happen when I tried to put it on an old, low memory computer, but never on a new laptop with 6GB RAM. My own laptop is also a Toshiba, but as Core i7, also with 6GB ram. GE runs perfectly on it.

What's wrong?

*P.S. While I say Avast didn't find any viruses, it did say during the boot scan that 3 files in c:\users\Gwen\AppData\LocalLow\Google\GoogleEarth\webdata\ were "corrupted".

A:Solved: Google Earth doesn't work

I finally did what should have occurred to me sooner (old age is he**!). I disabled Windows Defender (permanently), Avast's shields for 10 minutes, and turned the Windows firewall off. . . THEN (and only then) did another download and install. WORKED! At least the globe turns and displays the addresses I enter.

However, I notice that the Sightseeing Tour doesn't work. Keep getting the message "Make sure 3D Buildings layer is checked". It is, but the tour still doesn't happen.

Same question: What's wrong?

I have a HP Vectra 233Mgz w/W98se. I set it up with a borrowed monitor and worked fine. Now, it doesn't work with this Acer 15" that I have. All I get is, after it boots, a lot of line that may look like a desktop IF it wasn't all distorted. However, it boots clear as can be.
I will also mention that it works fine with my friends 15" Packard Bell monitor.
So can someone tell me how to get this to work properly?

I have a D-Link DWL-520 V. E1 wireless card and want to install it in a computer running Windows XP. D-Link does not give technical support for this card but does have the driver for download on their website.
I downloaded the driver for WinXP and clicked the setup icon to install and it installed the Utility program but never produced the screen to install drivers like the manual says it should. Hi,

I have run into a frustrating problem with my computer, I hope you can help:

After a failed installation of software (installer failed to edit the registry because some components were being used by other programs), I reboot the computer. After the reboot windows logon suddenly asked for a password, which never existed.

My account name is "user" and I have no password, so I simply pressed enter and Windows logged on.

The first thing I noticed was the fact that my network connections were gone, and so I am communicating with this forum through a different computer.

I decided to simply use System Restore to see if that would fix the problem. I am generally very organized, and before every software that I install, or any changes I make, I create a restore point. However, when I went to select a restore point, none were there! All the restore points I have created were gone except for one "System Checkpoint", which was created a minute before I rebooted the computer after the failed installation. Trying to restore to that point also fails. I have disabled Norton 360 before the restore, but the problem persists.

I have checked my memory settings for system restore, and it is set to maximum, 12%, 9600 MB. I don't realy know what System Restore stores in that dedicated space, but I don't think that thats the problem.

I know how to fix the winlogon password issue, but I will still be left with no network connections and the dilema of the Syste... Read more

A:Solved: After Logon XP Doesn't Work Properly

Hi,

I managed to solve this problem, by merging my registry backup with the current backup that was giving the problems, and this instantly solved the problem.

After completing a scan with Norton, (which I had disabled as I was installing the program, as I always do to avoid problems...irony..) I found a Trojan and a bunch of programs that looked innocent. The culprit was an infected version of WinRAR, that program edited the registry.

The moment I completed the scan with Norton, it immediatly pointed and quarantined the version of WinRAR as well as finding the Trojan.

Anyway the problem is solved, and from now on I will never disable Norton or any anti-virus while installing programs!
