File monitor application

Q: File monitor application

Hi, in our company we have a problem on several machines and we need to monitor some workstations to guess which applications write several folders (with chinese characters that stop backup process), and for that purpose i've been looking for an application.

First I found was Process Monitor, it works quite well, but the log it generates is really huge (gigabytes) even filtering only desired events (file/folder writing on a specific drive), and i'm looking for Reliabilty Monitor that comes with Windows Vista to setup that event logging, but I find no help on that windows feature nor I know if it can be done.

Do you know how to manage to do this with Reliabilty Monitor or other utility that monitors file system activity?

Thanks,
Salva.

A: File monitor application

If you want to monitor a file/folder on a drive I would think that process monitor would be the choice. You can get a process (application) activity summary at any time by clicking tools on the menu bar, then selecting process activity summary. This will show which applications have written to the file/folder at that point of time.

Of course, you would have to filter by 'path is' which it sound like you are doing. I have attached a copy of the process activity summary below:

Hi.

Windows 7 Pro SP1 64 bit
Intel i5 CPU @2.67 GHz
8 GB RAM

This problem just started recently or I only noticed it in the past week or so. When I'm in any application that launches the File Open dialog, including any browser's "Select File/Browse" button to choose a local file, when I select a file (even a small 1K file) from the dialog and the dialog closes, there is a 5 - 10 second delay before the app responds and either opens the file or in the case of a browser, displays the file name. In those 5-10 seconds, the app is non-responsive. In a browser, other fields on the form cannot be clicked or selected for the 5-10 second period -- then the selected filename appears on the form.

This happens in all 4 browsers I tried: Chrome 32, IE 11, Firefox 26, and Safari.

I also booted Windows in safe mode and the problem still occurred.

I also ran KingSoft Office Writer and selected File->Open and the same issue occurs after selecting the file -- there is a noticeable delay that wasn't previously there.

In a code editor (PSPad), opening a file does the same thing as well (hangs for several seconds after selecting the file).

Randomly during testing, (but probably < ~5% of the time) it doesn't delay and works properly.

I ran System File Checker and MS Security Essentials, but both turned up a clean machine.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this lately?

Thanks,
Vinnie

So far, I have no serious complaints about the OS, and experienced 0 crashes. I tried to install Asus PC Probe II for Vista x64, but received error acpi driver could not be installed. I would like to be able to monitor mb temp. I am still dual booting with xp pro 32 bit and win 7 64. Several months ago I tried installing 4g ram, but xp only recognized 3, and the mb temperature went up (I don't recall exactly how much, but it I remember thinking it was a significant amount). So, I pulled one gig out, and installed a clamp-on fan unit to cool the memory. Now I have reinstalled the 4th stick, and I would like to see what the mb temperature is running under Win 7. Are there any monitors out there that are known to run under Win 7?

Hello, everyone.
I am an illustrator, working with a partner, printing our illustrations on greeting cards, prints, magnets and the like. We're using some low-end equipment because, as artists, we are doing our required amount of suffering before we make it big (I hope).
We use, mostly, Adobe Photoshop for image prep, then Illustrator to put out the final product. 99.9% of our work is in rich color, so we're trying to get as much out of a 6-head Epson printer as possible.
I've noticed differences between the printed result and what appears on screen since I switched printers about 3 months ago. I am familiar with the differences between RGB and CMYK models, the additive and subtractive princples in printing.
I know there's a way to bring the printer around to be more in line with what the monitor shows and have just discovered Adobe Gamma, but have never used it.
Most of the literature I've read so far talks about "profiles", but I haven't seen any real "how-to" instructions.
Is someone able to direct me to a site or information so I can put it all together?
I'd really appreciate the help.
Thanks!

You can do this with Process Monitor from SysInternals. No installation needed. Download and run Procmon.exe.

I am not very computer literate so excuse me if I don't speak "the language", but here goes... My operating system is Windows XP and thats pretty much all I know about this machine. A few weeks ago we had some downed power lines in our area. My computer is on a battery back up but the power surges were coming so fast frequent that instead of seamlessly transferring the power source to the battery, the computer kept trying to restart. It did this three times then I shut it down until the storms past.

When I turned it on the next day I got an error saying the Device Monitor Application failed to initialize and now alot of programs won't open, like Paint and Picassa. Also, I have an all in one printer, scanner, coppier and the coppier and printer work fine. The scanner works (mechanically) but the application it uses to transfer the document to the computer does't work. With these programs I just get the usual Microsoft error saying they are having a problem and asking if I want to repot it.

I can't find anything on the Microsoft site that looks like the Device Monitor Application and I'm concerned that my hard drive is damaged. What do you think, any ideas?

Disable all USB ports and remove all optical drives, so all your computers just have an internal hard drive. That will stop employees bringing in any software at all and using it on the company's computers. The above will not cost your company any money, just get your systems administrator to do the necessary work.

Hi guys,

Maybe there is someone that has faced a problem like mine. I have two DVRs, each consists of 4 cams. I access them via Internet Explorer. I have two monitors and I would like to display cameras from the 1st DVR on 1st screen, and cams from 2nd DVR on 2nd screen. My configuration is extended desktop with two monitors.

Monitor no.1 is fine - i press "FULL SCREEN" button in the web application and 4 cams all fullscreened 2x2 matrix on the 1st monitor.

The problem is with the 2nd DVR and 2nd monitor. Every time I press "FULL SCREEN" button in the web application (which is moved to the 2nd monitor in the first place), the application goes fullscreen on the 1st monitor and covers the previously fullscreened cameras from the 1st DVR.

Do you know how can I force an application that is going fullscreen to maximize on the monitor it is currently working on?

Kind regards,
PK

A:Fullscreen application is not displayed on secondary monitor

it would help if you fill in your system specs.

especially what video card(s), and note how you have your monitors connected (hdmi, vga, etc.)

Nvidia and AMD have configuration programs - maybe look through there and check your settings.

hope this helps

hi
there is an application that communicates with remote server. it connects to the server and the user selects the records/files (txt or tif files) it then starts downloading them.

the issue with it is that this application works from home or non company internet. but it doesnt works on company network.

i want to investigate whats stoping it.

it can successfully login to the server and shows the files needed to be downloaded. and it sometimes does starts downloading . but it fails midway through files.

we are behind a tmg.

and tmg client is working but no success with it.

so i want some application to be installed on that particular pc on which the application is not working .(again it works if non company internet is used). that should just monitor the packets sent and received by that application..

wireshark is too complicated.. and displays all packets flying by.

how can i corelate the packets shown in wire shark to that specific program ?

any other alternative ?

or how to tackle the issue with this particular app? that is what i want to solve.

update:
that application uses http to download data .

A:monitor the traffice sent and received by one specific application

Start with Process Monitor. It will not show you the packets, but it might provide a clue.

Hi,

Does anyone know of an application that does the following: It tracks / monitors any .exe that I select and it tells me what that .exe is doing.

I know I've had a similar program in the past, I just can't remember the name. I was able to track a program's setup.exe and it told me what files it installed on my system, etc.

I also know that there is a program out there that tracks everything that is going on when a program is executed...

Hi guys

(Mods, please move if you feel this has been posted in the wrong place. It sort of didn't seem to fit anywhere!)

I'm running some cognitive science experiments using a multiple monitor setup in my lab. The lab computer runs windows XP and has three monitors.

A) Monitor I want to use to control everything in the experiment
B) Monitor in which I can see what my subject is seeing
C) (in a seperate room) Monitor the subject actually watches during the experiment

Since my experiment uses flickering images I need good frame-by-frame control of the monitor my experiment subject will see. Reading up on graphics card stuff led me to make B the primary monitor, A the secondary monitor, and to slave C to B so they are displaying the same image.

This setup is fine from a graphics perspective (I tested it with an oscilloscope and the timings were spot on)... but it's created a really annoying problem that I can't solve. Whenever I start certain applications (that will control the experiment) they pop up in the primary monitor, which means my subject sees all kinds of stuff I don't want them to see! Obviously I can just drag the relevant windows out of sight, but surely there's a better way to fix this? Is there some way I can order the relevant apps to start in the secondary monitor? Particularly, if they hang with some error message or other, I don't want this popping up and ruining the subject's concentration and otherwise breaking m... Read more

Not sure this is the correct place to post this but I'll start here.

I am looking to transfer several hundred gig of files from an old Snap Appliance NAS to a brand new Dell NAS. The files are used by PC's and Mac's so some of the file and directory names have funky characters. The old Snap device has not ability to connect anything to it or any agents to back the files up. I can map the Snap drive on a windows PC and am looking for a windows app that will take care of moving all the files and will even handle weird file names.

Any recommendations?

A:File Syncronization Application

Can you be a little more specific as to the funky character names.

If so, you should be able to simply XCOPY them to a large hard drive on the PC.

Depending on the file names, you might be able to create a batch file with the move command.

So basically today I went on some random website (meebo.com) that I regularly use to chat. A few moments after that, some virus scanner comes up and begins to scan my computer. I quickly close it because I know it's probably some Spyware... but I think it was too late. Soon after all this other "antivirus" software began to start scanning on my computer and I quickly closed them all. But now about every four or five seconds a windows "Security Warning" pops up on my computer and tells me that I cannot execute an application--usually it's "wuauclt.exe" And an Antivirus software alert also pops up on the bottom right hand of my screen telling me that a trojan is attempting to infect my computer. Also, internet explorer windows pop up every couple of minutes attempting to open up viagra or other porno websites.

Windows Security Alert - Windows reports that computer is infected. Antivirus software helps to protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. Click here for the scan you computer. Your system might be at risk now.
I'm pretty certain this is a bogus message due to the grammar errors and such. I have not "clicked here" as the prompt suggests.

I had AVG previously installed and running regularly, but when I attempt to run it I get the following:

Application cannot be executed. The file xxxx is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?
Again, I'm confident this is a bogus message. I have always clicked "No" in response to this.
I downloaded Malwarebytes on another PC and installed from a USB stick it onto the infected one. It installed, but when I attempt to run it, I get the same message.
I attempted to call up the Windows Task Manager to see if anything rogue was running. When I press control-alt-delete, the Task Manager pops up for a second, then disappears and I get the "Application cannot be executed" error.
Looking for suggestions as to how to best proceed.

Thanks.

Recently I have had an issue, by which every time I go to open an application - other than Mozilla Firefox(?!) - it tells me that "Application cannot be executed. The file (programshortname).exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?". I then am greeted by a "Windows Security Alert" balloon, that reminds me that the computer is infected. Further, I then get a "Antivirus software alert" from a program I have, for a fact, never installed called Security Suite that tells me of an Infiltration Alert, and alleged 'details' of it such as the IP I am being attacked from and a port number. Furthermore, I receive another Antivirus Software Alert from the same program I have never installed in the center of the screen, headed in "vunerabilities found." Hello all

First time here so please bear with me. I am trying to fix a friend's Vista laptop. When booted up shortly after it receives the following popup (in the middle of the screen):

Security Warning: Application cannot be executed. The file xxx is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?

In the bottom right of the screen above the system tray two more popups. 1) same as above 2) Antivirus software alert stating "your computer is being attacked by an internet virus. It could be a password-stealing attack, a trojan - dropper or similar. Details: attack from IP-address xxx, port 60552. Attacked port: 55557. Threat BankerFox.a Do you want to block this attack.

In normal windows mode, nothing can be done (well minimal). I can't get any webpage to load. However, if I let the above messages stay up, shortly after tons of web page windows will come up - all with various porn/viagra sites.

This laptop does have an OLD version of Kaspersky security suite. I tried to manually update the definitions but it wouldn't let me (I believe because the trial version it was on expired). I tried to remove Kaspersky but nothing happens when I try. I can't pull up task manager.

I can get into Safe mode and don't receive all these popups, but not alot I can do in safe mode. I can't remove Kaspersky there, says I must do in normal mode.

I did download Microsoft Malware tool on a thumb drive from another computer and run it... Read more

In an open folder select tools then folder options from the drop down menu at the top then select the file type tab.

Scroll down to the file extension you want to modify (such as .jpg), select it and click the change button.

Alternatively you can right click on an image and select "open with" then choose the program and check the box at the bottom for "always use the selected program blah blah".

Every Control Panel applet is a file with a .CPL extension. If you perform a search for these files you'll see that they're all located in the C:\windows\system32 folder.

At first an important request: Please read my problem carefully.
The solution is not as easy at it seems to be at the first glance!

Since WinXP I have a problem when I want to re-assign a file extension to another
application (=the program which should be used when double clicking on a certain file in WinExplorer).
This problem appears particularly when the old, current application is NOT existing any more!

Assume the following step-by-step simplified sample scenario:

1.) File extension *.avi is assigned to the well known videoplayer VLC in
D:\videoplayer\vlc\v1\

2.) Now I extract another PORTABLE videoplayer foobarplayer.exe into
D:\videoplayer\foobar\

3.) I delete the vlc player directory
D:\videoplayer\vlc\v1\

Ok, I admit it would be better to officially uninstall it. But the problem shouldn't exists here anyway.

4.) Now I want to re-assign *.avi extension to the new player. Therefore I right click in WinExplorer on an *.avi
program and select

Open With->Choose default program->Browse

I navigate to the new program foobarplayer.exe and click OK.

Surprisingly the OpenWith dialog still marks the old videoplayer program vlc or NO program. Even worse: The
new program is oftentimes not visible in this dialog. This drives me crazy.

It seems that internally Win7 still has Registry settings linked to the old default program which CANNOT be
OVERWRITTEN (by this way). The official often recommended re-assigning does NOT work.

I tried to find another way without lu... Read more

A:How to really, really re-assign file extensions to new application?

Hello pstein,

Assigning VLC mediaplayer with the avi file manually is different from having VLC Media player do it. In addition, deleting VLC Media Player in the Program Files folder, manually does not include registry uninstallations. In order to remove it, we must do it manually, here's how: Open with - Clean Up and Remove Programs

In making Foobar your default player, use the Default Programs application found in the start menu.

My old laptop crashed (motherboard) and I had a guy backup all my files onto a CD Rom. No prroblem with most, but my Outlook Express address book (.wab file) I cannot open. I get a message that the address book is locked by another application and to close the other application.
I have tried everything I have found on the net including saving as .csv, saving to hard drive, etc. with no luck.

I would be happy even if I could not import, but simply read the information in the file and manually re-enter each into my new address book. When I tried opening with other applications all I got was gibberish.

Help!?!

OK, I have this Art Explosion Clip Art Collection that I have always been able to use. My computer crashed about 2 months ago, so I had to get the hard drive reformatted and had to start all over. Reinstalled Illustrator, and went to open some clip art, but I get a pop-up saying that the file is "not a valid Win32 application".

Any ideas? This worked fine before I had the crash, and this is the only thing that isn't working properly now.

Suggestions would be much appreciated!

Hi

I am having some problems witha PC on a small network of 20 PC's. Some of the applications (mainly educational) will not run and give the error ###.exe is not a valid win 32 application. Other PCs on the network run the software fine
All the PC's have the same hardware and software build and are on XP SP1

I have tried copying the autoexec.nt and and config.nt from the windows/repair folder into windows/system32. I have also copied these files from one of the PC's that works ok into the system32 folder on the problem machine.

I have tried the applications in compatibility mode for 98 and 95. Still get the same error.

Hello all! Background:I've been having problems keeping ctfmon.exe from re-inserting itself into the startup. I've disabled it with AutoRuns before, but for some reason I had 2 ctfmon's listed in autoruns; one was disabled and the other was enabled. I would disable the other, re-boot and eventually I would notice it back in the startup. I'm guessing that every time I opened a document (I use OpenOffice) ctfmon would re-enable itself. So I went to the Microsoft Page, via google, and followed their instructions for disabling the Speech and Handwriting Recognition programs. That worked! No more ctfmon.Problem:I cut and pasted the instructions to notepad, named it "Disabling ctfmon" and hit save. I didn't bother to look at the icon after saving it, never do. But today I noticed that the "Disabling ctfmon" file shows as an application! Any ideas on this one?

I cut and pasted the instructions to notepad, named it "Disabling ctfmon" and hit save. I didn't bother to look at the icon after saving it, never doTry opening Notepad & then File > Open & see if the file shows up. If not you can perform a search from your Start panel & see if you can find it. The last place a file gets saved in Notepad is usually the folder that opens up. If you have not selected the folder it's probably the default folder. Running something like CCleaner may result in resetting the default location. YMMV.But today I noticed that the "Disabling ctfmon" file shows as an application!Where/how do you see this shown as an application? It could be because when you followed the Microsoft instructions, the entry is showing in the registry under the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (Disabled by Starter).

I have been apporached by a collegue who has numerous files created on an Olivetti word processor. Unfortuantely they don't have their WP anymore. They have asked me if there is any way of retreiving these files. Luckly the files are on a floppy disk which is read by my PC.

What I am looking for is a (free if possible) program that will convert the Olivetti word processed files into a viewable source e.g txt, RTF etc.

The files created have an extension of *.IWP I have found a utility that can convert them, however it's not free. Just wondering if you lot have any ideas?

Can of 'Jolt' cola to the first positive answer back!!

A:File Conversion Application Needed

Hi FireKracker.
IBM says that an .IWP (wang text file used on the olivetti) can be viewed as an html file in windows.
If this is true, you only need a html enabled browser. Try viewing it in IE. If it doesn't open, change the file extension to html on one of the files and try again. You can always change it back.

I need a product that can open most kinds of files, I already have Adobe & Acrobat but I still get files I can't open to view- I tried the Search thing but it's a little confusing. I have windows xp and internet explorer, if it makes any difference. Thanks

A:Need application for opening most file types

Hi, We would need to know the file extension .xxx in order to help you. The name of the program the files are supposed to work with would also be enough. If these files are something you downloaded, they most often are .exe or self executing program installs. A double click will usually start the install. Some downloaded from the Internet programs come in .zip format, compressed, and you need a program like WinZip or PKUnzip to "open" them or extract the files to a folder. You may or may not then have to click the .exe file in that folder...
If they are pictures or email attachments, files you were sent- you need to be careful they are what they seem to be, as viruses are easy to get by clicking attachments to emails or by downloading the wrong things. If you list the file extension and/or tell us what the file is we can help a lot more. You should have "Show all files" enabled under View>Folder Options in Windows Explorer, and also the box unchecked for "Hide file extensions for known file types" to see the extensions and all files.
Adobe Acrobat Reader is a .pdf or personal document viewer and more, the free version is really all you basically need for dealing with things like online forms, tax forms specifically- and it comes with most pre-loaded systems.
There are built in programs (in Windows) to view text, pics, graphics, for Excel spreadsheets there are viewers you can download, same for Word docs, and so on.

I have Dreamweaver CS4 on Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit. It opened fine until suddenly it stopped. Maybe there was an automatic update that changed a valid configuration. Regardless here is my problem:

I have a start menu shortcut pinned for Dreamweaver CS4. It shows the correct path to the executable in the shortcut properties. Though, when I do this I am shown a loading swirl icon and then it disappears. Normally, the program would display at this point. I cannot open the program from a shortcut. I have found that if I open an associated file (e.g. html, php), Dreamweaver loads just fine.

Any thoughts? I have tried the compatibility settings and run as administrator settings to no avail.

Thanks, Mike

A:Application Only Opens from Associated File (Dreamweaver CS4)

I solved this one myself. Right click on the shortcut , click 'Troubleshoot Compatibility', and let Windows 7 select the appropriate settings for your application to run. Dreamweaver CS4 works with Windows XP Service Pack 2.

FYI: The shortcut must be in a folder view (e.g. windows explorer window) for the 'Troubleshoot Compatibility' option to be available in the context menu. It isn't available from the Start Menu.

Hello,

I have recently been having trouble installing and running various programs on my computer (mainly microsoft office 2007 and itunes 9), when i do try to install the programs a microsoft window pops up and says "an error occurred while trying to create the directory C:DocumentsandSettings/AllUsers/Application Data"

I did try to resolve the problem by using my windows XP service pack 2 CD and completed the sfc /scannow (yes, with the space between sfc and /) yet i still cannot use many of my programs.

I have tried this solution twice now, restarting my computer before the second attempt, the scan took approximately 30mins each time.

Also, whenever i am able to use a program, a beige pop up appears in the notification area of the taskbar (near the clock) above a yellow triangle with an exclaimation mark inside, stating (for example, my security centre) "CA Security Centre: casc.exe - Corrupt File the file or directory \DocumentsandSettings/AllUsers/Application Data is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility."

I did run "Chkdsk /f", yet the computer says that it cannot lock the current drive.

I was wondering if there were any other possible solutions to my problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sam

A:Corrupted Application Data File

AFAIK:

DocumentsandSettings is the wrong format - it is Documents and Settings.

\DocumentsandSettings/AllUsers/Application Data is thwe wrong format - it is \Documents and Settings\AllUsers\Application Data

'I did run "Chkdsk /f", yet the computer says that it cannot lock the current drive.'

An in-service drive cannot be checked - usually is asks if you would like to do this at the next boot. Did it?

Hello, this is my first post here so pardon me. i have a problem when burning files to a dvd using the live file system. When burning the files over halfway through the application freezes; it wont continue, eject, or cancel. when it finally ejects and i insert the dvd again the files are all there but i cant move, add, or delete them. when i try to do these things the following errors come up: "there is not enough space on DVD...#MB is needed to recycle." it also gives me the option to just delete or cancel but when i press delete the same error comes up. I dont know what is causing this to happen, any ideas would be much appreciated.

A:When burning file to dvd, the application freezes

The Live File System is a packet writing method of creating discs and is unreliable, I wouldn't use that method. Do you have some other burning software like Nero or Roxio on your PC? If so use that.

What kind of files are you trying to burn to disc? Are you making a video disc or something else?

Hey everyone! I'm making a batch file for a computer repair company I'm with and I'm trying to automate as much stuff as possible and speed things up. As of this moment, I got all the major components of a batch file that retrieves information about the computer (Manufacturer, Model #, Serial #, etc.) then it opens up our site and logs that information in the site's database for the user's later review. Now, our site is programmed for netscape based browsers (Opera, FireFox, Chrome) and has some serious issues with Internet Explorer. So what I'm trying to find out is how do I make a batch file detect if a netscape based browser is installed and then open the site up in that browser? Any alternatives to this would be nice, we're trying not to completely redesign the website but will if it has to be done.

A:Batch File to Detect if Application Installed

I can think of 2 quick solutions, and neither are 100% reliable really.
One would be to check for the existence of the folder in program files, using an IF EXIST c:\program files\opera\nul............ and assuming it will be there. However it has problems if the user installed to a non standard location and you'll have to watch out for 32/64 bits versions which go to different folders.
Another way would be to check for the existence of the registry key un HKLM\Software\Opera, using REG QUERY command (check the actual key created beforehand, I'm just inventing here, but the idea is that). This also fails when the user is using the portable installations of browsers, which are registry-free.

In the long run, the only sure method would be to fix the site to make it work in IE. It's really common that non-IE browsers run the sites as they should, yet IE has problems frequently due to being standards-incompatible. While it's more work, I would ask a web developer to do the fix and workaround those IE bugs to make the site work properly everywhere. It's a very common problem unfortunately.

I am having a problem for some time with my laptop using Windows NT work station 4 service pack 6. The files shown in 'open' menu of almost all the application appear in order of date of modification (recently changed on the top). I want that the files should appear in order of their names (alphabetical). I tried to arrange files according to name in Windows Explorer but it did not make any difference.

Hi all,

I'm developing a large application using Visual Studio 2008 using VB.NET,

with .NET Frameworks 2.0 .
The application also make extensive usage of the DevExpress controls suit.

Every now and then we get an application crash. Always with the same details

Windows reports Cabinet.Dll as the source of the crash.

This happens on Windows 7 only (in windows XP the application runs OK).
The crash occurs at different locations in the applications and we can't reproduce it.
At times it will repeat itself very often at a short period of time, and after that it won't happen for a while.

I used the adplus debugger to monitor a crash and get a dump by using the following command:

adplus -crash -pn app.exe -o c:\temp

I opened the dump file using WinDbg and used the following commands:
.loadby sos.dll mscorwks
!analyze -v

the results are pasted below.

I would appreciate any help with finding the source of the problem.

Hi,
I want to create a new file extension named ".emsof" and associate any text editor with it like notepad++ in windows 8.1
Moreover all of these files should be searched by having filter of "*.emsof" like any other ordinary files.
Please guide me about how to do it?
Thanks.

A:Creating a new file extension and associate an application

You can just create a file with that extension and on a right click menu go to "Open With" and associate with a program you want. If you want it to stay like that, choose "Choose Default program".
Alternatively, you can open it's file properties and set default there. BTW, you can create a "Dummy" (empty) file with that extension. There's other ways but this ones are simplest.

Bascially i have a sony vaio latop, i have owned it for a year and a half and now it just says it can't respond if i try to open or save in any application. I firstly found out i had this problem in sony vegas pro 10.Please can you help and solve this problem its driving me crazy.

A:I can't save or open any file in any application without it saying 'Not responding'.

Do you know when this problem began? Try a System Restore to a point in time BEFORE the problem began. Here's the procedure: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html. Be sure to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points. If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two. NOTE: You will have to re-install any software and updates you installed and uninstall any software you removed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for the updates.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

I am entirely new to this forum, please forgive me if I am a little dense at times.I have a Toshiba laptop, running Windows 7. Suddenly today, a "Security Warning" appeared saying "Application cannot be executed. The file ____.exe (I can't remember which file it was first) is infected. Simple way, configure windows to show file extensions. Create a new text file, rename, change extension to emsof, confirm change. Double click or select open with, make sure check mark is set to always open that type with the selected app, select app, done. Emsof file extension will now open with the selected text editor.

I dont get the other part about searching for and filtering emsof. You can search and filter any file you want in windows regardless of extension or name. Just set the criteria. As long as there are .emsof files in the file system, they will pop up.

edit: well, it seems you posted this twice. Someone else answered on your other thread.

Two days ago, the symptoms began. First "Google Installer has stopped working" would pop up every five minutes or so. Upon starting the computer "MSAScui cannot be initialized" (or something like that) and "Windows Defender User Interface Has Stopped Working." THEN I started hearing advertisements. I couldn't see them, and no programs seemed to be open. But voices discussing everything from Longer Lasting Cough Medicine to Madagascar Tourism would begin to chatter every so often. Then fake anti-spyware warnings would pop up in the bottom right corner of the screen. Then links to pornographic websites would pop up on the desktop.

This was bothersome, so I downloaded and ran SpyBot S&D and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. The problems stopped for an hour. THEN Google Installer Has Stopped Working came back. And the ads! Plus a DIFFERENT anti-spyware warning. "Antivirus software alert" is the heading. It informs me that:

INFILTRATION ALERT
Your computer is being attacked by an Internet Virus. It could be a password-stealing attack, a trojan-dropper or similar."
....
Do you want to block this attack?

And bigger red boxes periodically pop up, saying "Spyware Alert! Activate Your antivirus software." What's more, while pornographic shortcuts no longer appear on the desktop, pornographic websites (and erectile dysfunction sites!) keep opening in new internet explorer windows.

Hi Everyone,

I have setup some monitoring software in an XP Virtual Application. More specifically I used the "Virtual Applications: The 'Invisible' Third Mode" method described here.

My challenge is that I need to access the applications database file, and save it to a location on the host computer. It seems to me that the only way to save files from the Virtual Application is through the program itself, and because the program hasn't been designed to save the database file (e.g.: there is no "File - Save DB" command) I am stuck.

If I had setup a Virtual Machine and then installed the software into it I would have the advantage of being able to access the guest file system, however I would not have been able to start my monitoring software whenever a user logs onto the computer.

Is there any way of accessing the host system of a Virtual Application?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

David

I've downloaded a file (a setup .exe file) for 3 different OS's and it doesn't work on any of them for some unknown reason. I'm beginning to suspect that the links I'm getting the file from all point to the exact same file for just one specific OS. I've tried the .exe on a Win7 64-bit, Vista 32 bit, and a XP SP2 32 bit, but NOTHING works...
This is frustrating me as probably thousands of other people used the exact same file. It's a .exe file to run a Upgrade tool for my Samsung Omnia i920.

So yeah, is there a way to get the file to work??? I'm pretty sure the Win7 version is intended for 32 bit users, but I don't understand why the file won't work on my Vista or XP computers.

When I browse my hard drive tree I see files and folders that I do not recognize and have no idea if they are being used for anything. For many of them, I have no idea how they got there.

Is there any software that will help me evaluate them in some way before I just delete them?

Whenever I right click on a file in Windows Explorer, the following error always occurs "The specified module cound not be found. C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe Version Cue CS4\Client\4.0.1\VersionCue.dll" and the app closes when you exit out the message.

However I can right click on say Libraries okay.

I have a broken laptop that has everything on it. I did back up to an
external hard drive Segate using the Bounce Back Express. When I get
my laptop fixed, I would like to transfer application/programs from laptop
to desktop, both have XP Professional. I know I will need program with
this data cable, but which one. My last questions would be can I transfer
programs/files with that program from a laptop with XP Professional to
Windows 7. Buying a new laptop within 10 days.
Please Advise.
Thanks
Duvall

A:Can anyone recommend a Application & file transfer program?

Transfering your files back depends on the method of how you have backed them up.
If you have done it using Bounce Back Express, maybe this application has option for restoring the files?

Also if you want to transfer application files from XP to Win 7 this will not work.
You will need to reinstall all applications on Windows 7 and then transfer your other files such as video, music, pictures etc.

Hi

Is there an application that can password protect a file/folder...and the ability to open that folder on another pc without installing any other software...ie just by typing the password in...?

Thanks.

A:Is there an application that can password prtoect a file/folder?

as far as i know - no. The closest way to do it is to pack with winrar, using password protection.

correct me if i'm wrong, also curious if this is possible with windows native resourses.
