Blank desktop after signon in Vista (HP DV6* series)

Q: Blank desktop after signon in Vista (HP DV6* series)

I'm having Windows Vista home edition on my HP laptop. The issue is, after I signon as Admin or Guest, I just get a dark /balnk screen and no desktop background or any icons, no taskbar etc.

I can access task manager by pressing (ALT+CTRL+DEL), therefore I can bring up the desktop (all icons and taskbar, system tray, quick launch) by initiating the task (explorer.exe) manually from New Task tab.

Please help to get rid of this issue.

Thanks,
Paresh.

Hi
I have a wierd issue.

I boot up and get to the logon screen, it sits there for approx 3 seconds the re-boots. If I get chance to enter password it tells me incorrect password then re-boots. I can restore system to previous point and log on fine but next time I boot it starts the reboot sequence again. I have started at last good config and it lets me log in but again on next boot it returns to re-boot sequence. I have changed RAM, I have run chkdsk /r , I have scanned with AVG & win defender (when it did boot ok).
Any ideas ??

I am sure the incorrect password is a clue to this, at first I thought a corrupt user account but I have created new and same happens. When as I said I start in last good config I use same password and all is ok ???

A:Vista keeps rebooting at signon screen

I try this first,

In the start menu go to All Programs > Accessories and then right click on Command Prompt and then "run as administrator" and allow it through UAC. when the CMD box appears type
"sfc /scannow" and it will do a scan on all system files and make sure none are corrupt and if they are it will automatically repair them.

give it ago and let me know how you get on

Installed Vista updates, which included fax modem driver and radeon ati driver updates. After installation, fax modem would not initialize. Rolled back with system restore to restore point prior to update installation- after reboot- no joy. Acer splash screen shows, then message that said windows did not shut down correctly- load normally etc. Now whatever way I try to load windows- normally, safe mode, safe w/ prompt- nothing but cursor- no matter how many times I reboot. I have only backup disks, no installation software. How can I fix this?

I can assess every thing on my laptop apart from the start menu because there is no task bar and the windows button on the key board doesn't work. Ctrl Alt Del does work. I scanned my laptop for viruses and spy ware but i didn't find any i rebooted into safe mode but it was exactly the same. Do you have any suggestions to getting my desktop back.

Dearest, I hope you can help me about this:
I never had problems for years with my Windows Vista Home Premium and I disabled the automatic updates (my opinion: if there aren't problems let all be that way! And it worked!) then I unfortunately decided to update the OS through the normal procedure displayed in the control panel (Windows Updates) and I begun getting this problem: one time on three (about) when I start my pc, after the login (I regularly type my password) I see a white desktop with no icons but I still have the taskbar, and the cursor is in the circular "waiting mode" forever. If I try to restart from the system it doesn't... so I have to push the restart button on my case and when it reloads the OS it's OK. Important: I have formatted the PC and newly installed VISTA (original) but after the updates the problem is newly there!!! Also when it happens I also notice a black screen for longer time before getting the login screen. A way of Microsoft to let you buy a new OS through destabilizing updates?!?!? I am sure it's not a virus or so... any idea??

A:Blank desktop after OS update in Vista

Try running the System File Checker: Start > Run - type sfc /scannow - click 'OK'.

When that's done, temporarily disable your antivirus software and defragment the system drive (usually C:):
Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter.

When that's done, re-enable your antivirus software.

Now check the C: drive for errors:
Right-click C: drive icon & choose "Properties".
Under the "Tools" tab, click "Check Now"
Tick both options, then click "Start"
Click "Yes" to allow defrag at the next restart.
Restart Windows.

When that's done, your PC will automatically reboot into Windows.

Sounds like a windows explorer problem. Have you tried 'last known good config' or 'safe mode'? You can try both by pressing F8 while the computer is booting until you get the menu to choose.

Hey guys,

I followed the steps to remove the "Security Shield" virus and when I went to restart my computer I got a black desktop with "my documents" open. I have access to Task Manager where I ended explorer.exe and started a new explorer.exe task which then brings my desktop back. However, this is only a temporary fix. I also went into regedit and set the WindowsNT Shell to explorer.exe, yet the problem still persists. I also saw my Malwarebytes quarantine tab had a bunch of trojans listed and one was in the registry affecting winlogon and another under C:\Users\MyName\winlogon.exe. Both were trojan.downloader. I will post an image of this

I want my desktop back without having to use Task Manager etc

Thanks!

Magicians,

I am at my wit's end!

During a period of great family trauma and with my brain switched off I received a Yahoo Messenger message saying "Is this you on Pic" followed by something like "n719753102_09.JPG-www.facebook.*x*" an exe file. You would think I have had enough experience not to open it but in my anguished brain dead state I did and it immediately sent the same message to everyone in my YM Contact list including mobile phones.

So after apologising and notifying everyone I shutdown my Vista endowed laptop googled it and then downloaded ...
Palevo Removal v2 from here. This program should automatically close the virus and remove it. All you need to do then is to reboot.
Note: Windows 7 and Vista users must click "This program works correctly" when prompted.

However I did not get that last message but it did stop sending the virus every time I send a Yahoo Message.

BUT EVER SINCE MY LAPTOP STARTS UP AND REMAINS WITH A TOTALLY BLANK DESKTOP. WAAAHHH
I can start it in Safe Mode Networking and it opens up to My Documents in Explorer so I can hunt around find and run my programs but I have no taskbars, icons or menus.

I have run adaware - Vet - Superantispyware - PC Optimiser Pro - Malwarebytes - Hijackthis all with no effect and I will attach the HJ file here in case one of the wizards can suggest something that will prevent me from have to reload windows?

I got a virus and thought I removed it (Fake 2011 vista security alert). Hours later IE hung and when i did a reboot my desktop was black, my quick launch was gone, my user account folder is empty, my start folder has no shortcuts (like docs or pics) and IE favourites are gone. Also if I try to place new shortcuts on the desktop they 'vanish'. If I move the file shortcut from the start menu to the desktop they vanish too.

I've run Norton, Superantispyware, Malwarebites. I've tried system restore and I've even lost the restore points now just to really upset me. I've run chkdsk and a regedit tool from Norton.

My system boots fine, programmes can be run from the file folder, IE is working.

Ehhhhh....help! Vista Home Premium.

Thanks in advance

Everytime I boot up vista ultimate 64 when the desktop shows up all icons appear perfectly but after like 5 secons they all blank out and reload one by one. I know it's nothing serious but I hate this kind of behaviour. It looks like altho windows already loaded all icons correctly it tries to refresh them again.

It only happens when windows boots.

Is there a workaround to avoid having the desktop icons refresh like that ?

A:Desktop icons blank out booting vista

Try right clicking on the desktop, and look to see if the "hide desktop icons" is checked. If so, uncheck it. I have a feeling that is not the problem though....

A couple days ago, my computer got a blue screen and said it needed to restore itself. My computer restarts, and the desktop is blank except for the recycling bin, mcafee security, and Epsom scan. My start menu is also blank, and not just the program side, the right side is blank and my user icon has been switched to the default flower. I can search for my programs and such, but I cannot use firefox due to an error message that I can't click out of every time I try to use it. When I try to play a video in chrome it runs very slowly and occasionally crashes. Every so often Internet explorer will open with "res://C:\Program%20Files\Internet%20Explorer\SZRes5EN.dll/homepage_protect.HTML" in the address bar. Also whenever I try to access websites sometimes it will direct me to different websites such as "22200.c.evoplus.com". I tried searching for help and using Microsoft security essentials but nothing worked. Can somebody please help me?

Hello Rossd23 and welcome to TSF,

It sounds like you are having a virus/malware issue...

Let's see what happens in Safe Mode.
Cold Boot your computer.
Immediately after the BIOS splashscreen begin tapping F8.
This should bring up the advanced boot options for Windows.
Select Safe Mode using the arrow keys and press enter.
Log onto your user account. Do the issues occur in Safe Mode?

Run the unhide.exe utility. (i think it has been updated to handle this, but:

After running the unhide tool you may still be missing most of your start menu shortcuts? They can be found in a folder named smtmp inside:

(XP)- C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temp
(W7)- C:\Users\(Username)\AppData\Local\Temp
These will be there unless you have removed temp files / folders

There might be three numbered folders inside C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Local Settings\Temp\smtmp folder. The folders will be numbered 1, 2 and 4.

Inside the 1 folder is a folder named ?Programs.? This folder should be copied / pasted to (using XP) to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu, which will already have a folder named Programs but it is safe to overwrite it since Windows will replace the subfolders without creating duplicates.

Inside the 2 folder are the quick launch items specific for the user. Select ALL of these shortcuts and copy / paste to (using XP) C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch.

Inside the 4 folder are the desktop items that should be copied to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop.

For Windows 7 users, the all users start menu is C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs and the all users desktop folder i... Read more

I have a machine with Vista Ultimate x64 on it (more specs at the end). It is joined to a Windows SBS 2003 domain.

When I log in to either my domain account or the local administrator account, I get "Welcome," then "Preparing your desktop," then a blank blue screen with just mouse cursor.

Ctrl-Shift-Esc does not invoke task manager. Win-R does not bring up the Run dialog. Ctrl-Alt-Delete provides security screen, but Task Manager can't be invoked there.

I can boot into safe-mode or safe-mode with networking and successfully log into both accounts. (WTF?)

Things I've tried:
* Done Vista startup repair. It claims there is no problem (and it's sorta right - I *can* startup a normal windows startup, I just can't properly log in)
* Logged in with safe mode and done chkdsk /f on all relevant volumes
* Done sfc /scannow - nothing interesting
* Changing HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon\Shell to "Explorer.exe" (it used to b cmd.exe /k start cmd.exe)
* Deleted the HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevices key and allowed it to be regenerated. No effect.
* Removing the machine from the domain, and adding it back
* Using net user Administrator /active:yes to activate the machine\Administrator account. I can log in (to a normal windows startup) on that account and get a desktop. But...then what.

No ghosting, drive letter shenanigans, etc. have been carried out.

Running out of ideas. Thanks in advance for any advice.

* The Event Log service is not running, and when I try to start it, I get Access Denied.
* Same with the ISA Firewall Client. (not running, access denied trying to start)
* Windows defender wants to get new definitions but gets 0x8024402c trying.
* Internet access doesn't seem to work (dns errors), even though ipconfig looks ok and DNS service is running
* My Antivirus software is running (Computer Associates eTrust) and does not seem to be upset
* Mamutu anti-Malware is running and doesn't seem to be upset about anything

Yesterday my laptop had a hard fall. I have a HP Pavilion dv2000, its about 4 yrs old. The screen was cracked so i plugged in another monitor & was still able to use it. It worked normally. But then today i turned it on & my entire desktop was blank. My documents, downloads, music, etc is all blank. Even my favorite links on the left side is blank too. If i press 'Restore Favorite Links' it just blinks, then nothing. But the weird thing is if i search a file, for example mozilla, then its there. So all my files are still there but just cant be seen ? :/

Oh another thing, there's this pop up that comes up as soon as i turn on the computer.
'Data Already In Use
The data required by Compaq Connections is still engaged by user O.o
Proceed here instead or Exit.

The Proceed here button said attempt failed no matter how many times i try. I don't know if this has anything to do with the blank desktop. The weirder thing is I'm the only user on my laptop, don't even have a guest account. Everything still works the same but the blankness everywhere is freaking me out.

Please help.

Run UnHide.exe to view your hidden files.

"Compaq Connections'' is a service that automatically sends you support information, tips, ideas, and special offers from HP and our partners, especially designed for HP/Compaq desktop PC owners. It can also deliver on-line surveys that allow you to provide feedback to HP"
Compaq Connections is not needed. Disable it. Or go to Start/Run and type appwiz.cpl and press enter. In the Add Remove Programs uninstall Compaq Connections.

To just Disable 'Compaq Connections' using the MSCONFIG utility.
Click Start> Run> then type 'msconfig' (without the quotations) > click on the Start Up tab.
Find the Compaq Connections entry and uncheck the box
Reboot

Note: Upon reboot you'll get a notice that you have used the System Config Utility to change your system settings, just check the box that says 'don't show this message again'. (It'll go away on it's own after a few reboots.)

I have been having CPU issues at 100%. I contacted HP.com support and the last suggestion they suggested was to update the video card driver. I have a Nividia GSForce2 MX200 (Compaq Computer) They sent me to a link to their ftp site and I followed the instructions to download, install, and do a restart. When I restarted there were no desktop icons. It probably means that whatever files are damaged are preventing the startup from finishing. The normal internet programs that launch upon starting up the computer are not launched and I have to manually launch them by finding them. I tried doing a last known good configuiration, and when that failed in safe mode I couldn't access the Start Menu to do a system restore. I tried rolling back the driver to the previous one to no avail. I called HP and of course they wanted to charge me since it is out of warranty. I said it was their file and I asked for a supervisor who told the tech to tell me the same thing. So I was stuck with chat support. We were able to try the system restore which didn't work. I went to Control Panel and tried cliking on Taskbar or Start Menu but nothing happens. HP sent me 2 links for some patches:

You should be able to "refresh" your pc without losing your files. Im not sure about programs, but personal files you shouldnt lose. This should  work, I have done it myself and the Microsoft website also says it will not remove personal files when you choose this option. But I will say do it at your own risk. If it works, back up your personal information onto an external media for safe keeping incase something like this happens again.

Gentlemen/Ladies: I am strongly considering the purchase of above HP Desktop. I will use the system for surfing the web and video and photo editing. I am a novice in the area of video and photo editing. I am taking up the craft as a hobby and see where it takes me. The primary components of the system will be as follows:

- Windows 7 Home Premium (Upgrading to Windows 8 when available)
- Processor:3rd Generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770K quad-core processor [3.5GHz, 8MB Shared Cache]
- Memory: 16GB DDR3
- HD: 256GB SSD + 1 TB 7200 HD
- GPU: 2GB Nvidia GeForce GTX680 [DVI, HDMI and VGA via adapter]
- Power Supply: 600 Watt
- Liquid Cooling Solution
- Monitor: Looking at Dell 27"2560x1440

The system comes equipped with Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere 10

HP's Phoenix series is a favorite of some gamers. I was considering an Imac but decided against it because I wanted to stay with a PC. My question to the forum is are these components a little overkill? The price is not a barrier for me.

A:Is the HP-HPE h9-1210t Phoenix series Desktop Overkill for Me

I guess it will depend on how much video editing you end up doing. It is absolutely overkill for surfing the web, and overkill if you only do a little photo editing. The extra cores will help with the video editing, but you will never use them surfing the web. Even if you do gaming it will not help much. Games rarely use 4 cores of a processer. If you want a system like that, you would be better off building it yourself. It really isn't as hard as most people think and you will get better quality components, and exactly what you want. And you always have the experts here in chosing components and assembling the computer.

I understand that you started through the troubleshooting guide for power supplies.  The step about disconnecting internal components is essential to continue the troubleshooting, however.  If you are not comfortable with that, maybe get a more knowledgeable friend to help.  Otherwise it is off to the repair shop.

I have an ACER M4 Series, Veriton desktop PC, Model number M4618G-Ui5240W.  The PC has an Inter Core i5-2400 CPU @ 3.10 GHz, 4 GB of Ram and a 32 bit Operating System .  I am running Windows 10. Recently it has begun failing during normal operations.  The top of the monitor will flicker with horizontal lines corrupting the video image, followed by loss of output to the monitor which goes blank.  The PC then either freezes with an annoying beeping sound that continues until I perform a hard shutdown or it completely shuts itself down. Any ideas what is causing this or what I can do to correct this issue?

I'm a W98SE user who got a newer system ...has W2K on it...I have read various things about sign-ons, etc...but still not sure how to get what I wish..IF it's possible...I have created an ID with Power User...I want that ID to show up when I boot but it just shows standard Administrator...having to type in pswd is fine BUT don't want to type in both user/pswd...is there a way to do so?

Ideally I would like to have my Power User auto-logon and have option to signon with pswd reqd to be keyed as Admin when needed...is there some registry tweaks to do so if needed?

Also, is there a way to see (or constantly show) which user ID I'm signed on as?

Hi,
Ive been running a windows 2000 for a while now, the other day i saw it was running,
but i hadn't turned it on, and the monitor was blank.
Tried the mouse and the keyboard, but got no response, so i turned it off using the
button on the front of the computer.
To my surprise after a few minutes, it turned itself back on. I watched the monitor
as it went through the motions. Memory check. Win 2000 logo. Black and white stripe.
All seemed well, until it was about to show the desktop display, it didn't show up.
Just blank, but the computer carried on clicking and twinkling its little light. Then
the Windows start up musical sound played. Then nothing, but the PC stayed on, and
its little light would blink every so often.
I waited a while, then decided this wasn't right.
Switched it off again, and started it again. same result.

Tried again, this time i went for "Safe Mode".

It started up in "Safe Mode" , but of course it can't be used fully in "Safe Mode".
I looked around it, poked at this, poked at that, all looked normal for "Safe Mode".
Shut it down, properly this time, by using the proper shut down sequence.
It shut down ok, i thought - maybe thats all it needs, a proper shut down - maybe it
will behave itself now, and fly right.

No.
It started itself up after about four minutes, same as before.
PC running, no display.

So, i am asking for help please.

I purchased what was described as a 'Dell 3588D Motherboard Slot 1 Dimension
XPS-B' motherboard from eBay. It uses Rambus memory sticks, but has 3
memory slots to fill, while every motherboard of that type I have researched only
has 2 memory slots. In addition, most of the Series B desktops I looked into
seem to be limited to 512MB of memory.
Because my motherboard has 3 memory slots, would I be allowed to insert three 256MB memory sticks, giving me a total memory of 768MB? I'm told that you should
not exceed the required limit of memory. Would someone care to comment on my
predicament?

So, yeah. 5 year warranty compared to two of Buffalos and WDs, but does that actually mean that much more reliable a drive? With the problems with Seagate drives lately and a price slightly lower than with other similar drives I'm a bit wary... I won't be storing/backuping anything of real importance, just a handier option compared to a squadron of flash drives How much limited is the warranty actually? Manufacture flaws with no responsibility over the lost data or what? I'm a bit... Uncomfortable with any kind of warranty or RMA thing....

Does Bitlocker support single sign-on?
In our environment (WinXP) a smartcard is required to login. We
have an older disk encryption solution "SafeBoot" but are replacing it with another solution with a move to Windows 7 Enterprise and the Gemalto .NET smartcard. A contractor has recommended  McAfee Endpoint Encryption however in-house
tests discovered the McAfee product doesn't support single sign-on with a smart card on Windows 7.  That is, a user is prompted for their smartcard PIN twice. Once for disk encryption and once to login to Windows. This limitation has been confirmed by
McAfee. Our current implementation of disk encryption has the authentication integrated so the user is not prompted twice which makes us wonder if the McAfee product is right for us. Does bitlocker support single signon?

A:BitLocker single signon?

BitLocker has no relation with the logged on user for decryption. Encryption is system wide and can be unlocked with a system PIN, a system USB or just the TPM in the system. The only user integration I have ever seen is an internal MS development that tracked
the number of failed logons to remove the key material from the TPM.
Short answer: no BitLocker does not have a single signon option in Windows 7.Ray - Author of Windows 7 for XP Professionals

I recently got a SSD and just installed Win7 on it. I had 99 windows updates which were installed yesterday.

When the updates were done and it restarted, I tried to sign on. The image and password box disappeared like normal, but I still saw the sign on page background and it never made it to the desktop, so I did a hard shutdown. I was able to sign in just fine after this. I played some games and a few hours later, I shut it down. It froze with the message "Shutting Down..." on the screen and never made it. Another hard shutdown.

I was able to sign in and shutdown just fine after restarting.

One thing to note is that I ran a theme patcher before the updates (wasn't aware they were being downloaded). This changes shsvcs.dll, themeui.dll, and uxtheme.dll. I'm assuming these aren't changed in the updates. Maybe they are.

I was wondering if anyone might know what caused this. Should I restore to before the updates? I'm going to check the error logs when I get home to see if something happened at either of these times. I'm thinking I might run "sfc /scannow" as well just to be sure.

tl;dr - Installing 99 updates. Wasn't able to sign on afterwards. Restarted and signed on, then the OS froze on the shutdown screen. No issues since. Any ideas?

I recently got an HP 2311x Monitor for Christmas and hooked it to a Lenovo H200 tower. I am unable to get past Windows splash screen. BIOS says "we apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this." I have tried going into safe mode and just about every other option to no avail. I asked HP tech support to see if bad monitor but it is fine. I also called Lenovo Idea tech support and they said a tech will call back. I think something is uncompatible with Lenovo and HP monitor. It worked just fine when it was hooked to an old CRT. Cant handle the latest flat screen technology perhaps?. Any suggestions?

A:Lenovo H Series Desktop is not responding to recent HP 2311x monitor

Do you know anyone you can borrow another monitor from?

Have you checked monitor settings to make sure frequencies are within the range supported by your display device?

Another option would be to manually disable the display adapter driver. What type of display adapter is involved? Intel, NVIDIA, AMD?

Hi,

just thought I'd let people know there is a solution to the problem of live mail opening when you go to Messenger and displaying your Live inbox without having to sign in which is pretty annoying as other people use my pc !

Just uninstall Live Essentials and reinstall just the Messenger and Photo parts (you can choose !) , it will then reinstall just those two and also the Sky Drive stuff.

So that's solved, back to using Hotmail.

I see this problem popping up frequently so hope this helps others too.

Need to add all my same friends again and update everything - seems like it should have defaulted some/more of this stuff from VF but I'll be done soon so no big deal. Maybe I'll actually do a little posting after checking out what's there.

At the moment, it's more like a chat room than a helpful forum - and I prefer to help people to just chatting (though I do like that too from time-to-time) - so I suspect I won't be doing a lot of posting there at present though that may change. I can't believe some people have hundreds of posts already - I notice John had 500!

Maybe I'll just login daily anyway to help with the online numbers (and to get messages and such).

Thanks for any advice.

Sorry, I found the problem. The email with a cryptic pin number was being mailed but was marked somewhere as spam. I'm trying to figure how a message with a title like it has, very legit looking was treated as spam. I had filtering in Kaspersky turned off so not sure how.
I will add that no way am I using such a number to save time when logging in. There is still an issue here in that my four digit pin was working during sign in.

Can anyone advise if this machine is at its max of 2gig or can the BIOS be pursuaded to see 4gig?

Hopefully I can workout the new 4 x 1gig sticks config, if not I will have to return them to the supplier. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just bought this computer/tablet and have had it for 2 days. It started up right away and worked fine. Later in the day, I went to use it, I was able to sign on, but then the screen went black - still plugged in. The next day, it started up just fine and I was able to sign on and use the machine, but later in the day the same thing happened - able to sign on but got a black screen. Today, I have tried numerous times and was able to actually get a screen once and tried to troubleshoot on the HP website and my browser shut down and I have not been able use it since - still able to sign on but always get a black screen. I have shut down and restarted numerous times.I really would like to be able to use this machine, but it doesn't appear too promising.Thank you.

Our computer has mysteriously acquired an unknown password and refuses any signon. We have purposely omitted any signon password (hit return at prompt) because our computers are secure. So the spontaneous injection of a password is problematical. We have tried most recently internally used passwords for applications (starting with the most recent) but nothing works. Short of calling Microsoft does anyone have a suggestion?

I am having a hard time deciding whether I should return this Sony Vaio I bought and get the HP dv2 online instead. They are both Windows vista home 64-bit. I bought the Sony Vaio NS series for $499.99 plus all those fees for a total of $563.74 at Best Buy. If I return it I will most likely have to pay the dreaded 15% restocking fee which comes to about $70-80 less in refund money, even though I noticed yesterday that this laptop was a bit sluggish, which isn't typical for a Sony Vaio which has such a good reputation. Not fair, but I have to pay it.

I browsed the web and saw a brand new, with warranty HP dv2 for only $599, everything included in the price. And I can also get Microsoft cash back on it, which is minus 40-50 dollars. I also have the ebay rewards, which is minus an additional 11-12 dollars. I know that some people get turned off by the idea of buying from ebay. However, this seller seems legit and feedback received has been favorable. I also have paypal buyer protection when i receive it.

However, what caught my eye was that the HP dv2 the seller was selling has 4gb RAM and 500gb Hard drive. Compared to this Sony Vaio, which is only 3gb RAM and 250gb Hard drive...that is a long way. I have used an hp laptop before and it lasted a good 2 years and something before breaking. Which I guess is pretty acceptable? The HP dv2 also has a small, very portable 12.1 inch screen, compared to this standard 15.4 inch screen on the Sony Vaio.

The only thing that make... Read more

A:Lexmark 1200 series for Vista

Click on the start button and then type in the search box:
services.msc
click ok
On the right-hand side of the Services window, scroll down to the Print Spooler service and click on it.
On the left side click stop the service and wait for a few seconds or so until the process has stopped.
Next, click the start button and go up and to the right and click Computer
Browse to the following folder:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS

Please note that your system32\spool\printers folder might be in a slightly different location depending on your computer configuration.

Delete the .SHD and .SPL files located in there.

Next, go back to the printers folder and try to delete your printer OR try to uninstall it through your Control Panel - Programs applet.

You should then be able to install the new printer drivers.

I've been looking for help with a certain problem I've been having with my printer and my laptop with Vista. It is an HP C4280 printer. The software and drivers all seem to be installed properly, and we were able to print a test page (through the control panel), but when I try to print anything else, be it from Word or the Internet, the docs get put into the printer queue and don't print. Eventually, they give an error message. Any ideas? I'm thinking maybe this particular printer needs a patch to work with Vista, but I haven't been able to find one myself.

I appreciate any help and ideas,
Thanks.

A:Vista and HP C4200 series printer

Hi rabookajayne

First of all, make sure the printer queue for your Photosmart 4280 isn't "paused". I'll assume that your Hp is likely the default printer for most of your programs, too -- but you might check.

Also check on the CD that came with the printer: see if the driver is version 8.0.0 from May, 2007. If it isn't, uninstall your current driver - (go to "Programs and Features" in Control Panel to start the HP uninstaller) - and then download the newer driver. You can completely uninstall ALL HP Photosmart software & the driver as well, if you'd like, but you'll want to have someone with broadband Internet to download that latest package (software plus drivers), because it's a tad over 100mb --- http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...s=2093&lang=en ---

When installing the new drivers, make sure that the HP 4820 is not turned on or connected to your PC. Run the installer file, and only connect and power on the PC when the installation says to do so. When installing Hp printers, the order in which things happen has to be exact. [A bit ridiculous, if you ask me, but that's how Hp has always been].

See if that does it.
Best of luck

So i finally decided to upgrade to Windows 7 and the kid at best buy suggested software called 'Wipe Drive 6' he claimed it works wonders with erasing your whole hard drive and explained to me why i should start with a fresh one for windows 7. So me being gullable i purchased it. Little did i know using this disc it erased vista completely and without vista up it wont let me upgrade to windows 7, from boot it will take me through the first few stages of upgrading but then ultimately tells me to eject disc, reboot with vista up (which i obv cant.) and insert the windows 7 upgrade disc.

Now my real concern is, i have just received my System Disc and 2 Recovery discs in mail via gateway. I pop in the system disc and i go through the stages. As soon as im prompted to insert Disc 1 of recovery, i do, but all i get is 'waiting for files to load' (which is there from system disc) ive waited an hour and have got 0% copied 0% total progress. Am i missing something or did this wipedrive completely wipe out my computer?

I got an ASUS M51 laptop 2 years ago with Vista Ultimate 32. I felt pretty good about the machine, until I connected a second LCD monitor with DVI connection. Connecting with VGA port had no crash problem, but I prefer using DVI with a HDMI/DVI cable. Using non-Aero theme had no problem.

Occasionally the system reported graphic card driver crashed and tried to recover. Sometimes the system recovered, more often not, leading to total crashing of Windows.

Surely I did the following:
1. Reinstall the latest graphic drivers.
2. Reinstall the latest ASUS splendid utilities.
3. Keep Windows patches updated.
4. Install and uninstall some Windows hot fixes, as suggested by some newsgroups' posts.
5. Many other methods.

None worked. So I gave up Aero for almost a year. Until I read a post when searching for answer about mysterious disappearing of desktop icons when the desktop is refreshing sometimes. The post had the finger pointed to Power4Gear eXtreme. For some reasons, the default settings of Miscellaneous power settings of the Quite Office profile will hide desktop icons. After changing the setting to No, the desktop icons stay still forever. And the Windows graphic driver crashing occurred less often.

As the crashing still happened, so I uninstalled ASUS Splendid utilities. And crashing of graphic driver never come back.

This is a new laptop. Probably over my head. For some reason the full screen mode has changed to a black section on top and bottom. My display is set at 1600X1024 pixels. I have done nothing to change the screen appearance.
Automatic updates are activated and that is the only changes I have seen.
I would like to know how to effect a full screen picture without the top and bottom blackout. Also on IE my main page is just about 1/2 the center of the screen.
Pretty basic as is my knowledge! Thanks

I have a set of HP Z210 Workstations with E3-1245-V2 Xeon Cpu's, SSD boot drives and varying sizes of memory from 8-16GB 1600Mghz DDR3 ECC. We use Windows 8 Enterprise for these machines, with Hyper-V enabled.
We get regular driver failures from the 2 sets of USB controllers on the machines (Mainly and issue for the KB & Mouse) that can only be resolved with a full power down (not restart) and a power up. This happens at least once every 1-3 days per machine.
I had gone through the HP support, but they have advised this isn't an issue on their side, and I had agreed all along. I was just hoping to get some traction by notifying them. Anyway, after a lengthy trouble shooting session, we found that once Hyper-V
was enabled, the fault arose.
As it was an Intel chip, they I asked them. They advised that on Windows 8, the drivers are supplied via windows update and that it was not their issue.
So, how can I get this resolved? Not through HP or Intel, surely through MS? Maybe not. Disabling Hyper-V is not desired as I the teams with these PC's are developers and require local visualization. Also, we have templates ready for Hyper-V, I don't really
want to remove Hyper-V and use Virtual box or VMWare workstation. but I am at wits end with the fault and lack of help from the vendors.
Please help.

A:Hyper-V causes Intel(R) Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller driver to fail

I have found a work around for this fault with the USB failure - ENSURE YOU POWER  THE MACHINE OFF - DO NOT RESTART.
Its almost like the restart doesn't initialise the device correct, thus causing a failure.

I know it's been posted a s#!+load of times, but I figured I'd go ahead and get something straightforward- all the other posts have been in jungle English, and haven't included the proviso I'm looking for.

Anyways, my situation is that I bought my X1900GT from Newegg around Christmastime, as a present to my ainsel (ownself, for those not familiar). I've been getting kind of disappointed in it recently: It underperforms and often crashes on STALKER:Shadow of Chernobyl and some more modern games akin to it. It also runs hot as Hades.

I'm in the market for a new card. I'd like to go DX10, but the late-production DX9's (7900 series) seem to outperform a lot of the more affordable DX10 offerings (8600 series), especially at higher resolutions, due to the 128-to-256 bit difference. I could splurge and go for an 8800, I suppose, but it would be a hit to the wallet and I'd have to postpone :cough: "Aruban Getaway 2008".

So: I don't want to pass up on the new line of DX10-only Games for Windows (Age of Conan, Crysis, etc.) that have been hyped to all hell just because I stuck with price and performance instead of currency and novelty. I need some help deciding. Then again, I could always wait until DX10 becomes the vogue and buy a cheaper, but better card then.

A:Price v. Performance in 7-Series + 8-Series: Advice Needed

Keep what you got and see what's comming next. I have a 8600GT as a stopgap until something better comes out. There has been talk of a Nvidia 256bit card to fill the gap between the 8600's and 8800's. I can't fit a 8800 in my case, if I could I would just get the 8800GTS 320mb now. If I were you, wait for the game to upgrade instead of upgrading and waiting for the game. Your X1900GT is no slouch either.

We are retiring the 2014 thread    Anyone having an active discussion there can find it here.

The 2012-2013 tread  can be found here .

Here are some common points of frequent discussion:

How to get a system fast: Buy an in-stock standard configuration from Lenovo or a Lenovo Partner in your area. Customized systems take longer.
Avoid Credit Holds - ensure that BOTH your bill to and ship to addresses are listed with your CC bank before ordering
Lenovo will not bill your card until order ships - an authorization charge hold to check for available balance may show up when order is first placed.
Estimated ship dates are based on default lead time and can vary from what was displayed on website.
In the US and Canada, Lenovo utilizes UPS for new product shipments
Orders may ship before the Estimated Ship Date
Orders may enter through Alaska and pass through Louisville, KY before traveling on to final address
Cancellation requests may take up to 2 days to process
Requests to change configuration or other aspects of the order may require the order to be rebooked.
Lenovo does not accept payment via international credit cards, except AMEX.

Hey, what's up forum? This is my first post on here, but more than likely will be my most important one. My computer specs are listed at the bottom of my post, but if anyone needs to know anything more, feel free to ask. I apologize for the long post, but I figure if I give you everything you'll need, then the amount of questions will be minimized.

I just finished building two separate computers for my workplace (I do CAD design for a special-purpose airboat-building company). One of them runs basic programs (no CAD work involved, so no CAD software installed on that one), and the other (mine) runs top-end hardware and Autodesk Inventor 2009 Series. Both run Vista Ultimate 64-bit.

For my boot drive, I have two 32GB OCZ solid-state drives running in RAID 1 (mirroring for OS backup purposes). I also run an internal 1TB Samsung HDD, used to store data, as well as a Fantom Drives 2TB external HDD for backup. On the non-CAD support machine, I had relatively minor issues when building it, which (thankfully) are resolved now. For the CAD machine, I have had major issues. I've installed Vista twice on this machine in the same day, but I'll concentrate on the second install, since it is (was) more stable.

The major problem that I'm having right now is that when I'm working on this computer, I will be right in the middle of doing a CAD drawing, and suddenly the computer will turn the screen a solid color (so far it has been gray, like the background in ... Read more

I have a friend who just came to me at work with an issue on his home PC. I am having a little bit of an issue as I have not encountered a similar problem and am unable access the PC since where at work. I thought this might be something simple for all the experts on the board.

When he last turned on his PC, his desktop came up with just his wallpaper (no icons) and no desktop Start Menu bar. The Start Menu does not come up when he pushes the Windows button on his keyboard.

He is able to bring up Task Manager and access programs using File, New Task(Run...) there. He ran his virus software and SpyBot with no issues noted.

He isn't aware of any changes made to the PC recently, though his son, home from school, did use the PC in the last few days.

Any ideas on what he might do to get his desktop icons and Start Menu back.

Appreciate any help you can give.

I'm on a Gateway Laptop, running Windows XP. I ran into a...pretty big problem.

My nephew, while trying to watch a show, downloaded a virus, disguised as some file needed for a video to stream. The next day, when I booted up my laptop, the desktop was completely blank(I can see my image, but no icons, no task bar, no start, nothing.) Right clicking doesn't work, however i'm able to run some programs such as firefox by using Task Manager. When I try to run anti-virus programs, the programs are either halted at installation, or can't update. The only one that has worked so far was Avira, but it didn't stop the virus.(And I can only scan once, then the virus somehow shuts it down and doesn't let me re-open.) I tried Anti Malwarebytes, but that only opens, gets 3 seconds into a scan, and shuts down and doesn't reopen. When I try to open anything that seems like it can help, I get the message, "Windows cannot access specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the items." even though i'm on the Administrator account. I've tried every single anti-virus program I could think of, tried online scanners such as Trend Micro and Kapersky, nothing seems to work.

I even tried changing the name of anti virus programs before I ran them, but to no avail. Any help you could give me would be extremely appreciated.

Edit: And the "Windows cannot access", I can't manually boot explore... Read more

This infection can be very tricky to remove. You need to head on over to the HijackThis forum for an in-depth look.Preparation Guide for use before posting a HijackThis LogPlease be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are EXTREMELY busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

Some files or Objects are currupt.

I'd suggest inserting your Windows XP cd, rebooting and booting off cd. Then select the repair option to fix the currupt files.

Not enough RAM and the CPU is a bit slow. You will NEVER get much performance out of this. I do NOT think that even Home Basic would run on this let alone Ultimate.

Sorry.

My desktop started to display an advertizement on my desktop, covering up my desktop backgound. I tried to get rid of it and ended up having my desktop covered up with some gray display which occasionally flashes. When I right click on it, I get the same options I would if I were to right click in my Internet Explorer. Everything else works fine, I can see my icons on desktop and my taskbar. I can pull up my task manager, and If I kill the "Explorer.exe" process, I can see my original desktop wallpaper but i can't see my taskbar or icons. If I start a new task "explorer.exe" everything comes back with that gray background. I try running search and destroy, ad aware, norton antivirus, and AVG (which found and destroyed some viruses). Does anyone know how I can possibly fix this?

Hello and welcome to TSG. I think you need to see what else lurks in your system causing this problem. In Explorer, go to Programme Files and create a new folder and call it HJT. Then go to http://www.majorgeeks.com and download Hijack This into that directory. The latest version should come up automatically and should be 1.98.2.

You can run Hijack This frrom that directory and copy and paste the log back to a posting in here but please don't let the programme fix anything until you hear from someone here with the experience to analyse the log.

When you press CTRL+ALT+DEl you should see a menu, one item would be to start the Task Manager. In Task Manager go up to File/New Task (Run) and type explorer.exe and press enter. Your desktop should appear. If that doesn't work,
Boot off of the Windows Disc Or download the Recovery Console ISO. Burn it to CD with IMGBurn Boot off of the CD and get to the Recovery Console. Here type chkdsk /R and press enter. The Check Disk utility will try and fix any file errors.
You can also download the ISO image for Drive Fitness Test in my signature and burn the image to a CD using IMGBurn also in my signature and boot off of the newly created CD and run the Quick and Advanced tests on the HDD to test the integrity of the drive.
