Can't update and no updates listed

Q: Can't update and no updates listed

I recently gave my parents my old computer after i built my own, and after trying unsucessfully to update the lastest important update from microsoft, i also found that no updates show up on view installed updates in programs and features. This computer has been updated to sp2 and under update history it shows several dozen vista updates, but yet again i can't update the latest important update and nothing shows up under view installed updates. The error code i get is code 80070490 and i scoured the web trying to find a fix last night. I tried several fixes and nothing worked, the last fix i tried was downloading the standalone vista updater and it hangs up and doesn't install the update. I'm about ready to just run a clean install, but does anyone have any suggestions as to why no updates show up under add/remove programs, and yet under update history i see several dozen? Additionaly i can update other extras, but the two things i can't update are the extra dreamscene and an update classified important. I tried system restore to two previous restore points and still the same problem.

Hi

Noticed this month that I suddenly had a lot of important updates to install when I check Windows update. Under important updates I have the likes of:

KB3055999 - Update APN database entry for SaskTel (Canada) in Windows 8.1 and 8
KB3045634 - You cannot make a PPP connection after you reconnect a PLC device in Windows 8.1 or Windows 8

The article for both of these states: Provided as an Optional update for Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1

Wondering why I have these and others listed as Important?

Thanks

Win 8.1

A:Optional updates listed under important updates

They are "only" important, so they are optional. "Critical" updates are not optional. MS-speak at its finest.

I realize this isn't a major problem, but it's something that irks me and I was wondering if it was possible to fix.

I recently reset my laptop back to factory setting and before that I could've sworn that the XP updates I installed were listed in the Add/Remove Program list in alphabetical/numerical order. It made it easy to see which updates I installed.

I reinstalled the patches and at first they were listed in order, but suddenly the order just randomly changed. My list is set to sort by name, but it doesn't have any effect on Windows Program Updates list. I installed everything going from oldest to newest so it should've stayed in order, but it didn't.

Is there anyway to get it back in order?

I am trying to help my Mother with her computer. The other day I went to Windows Update, and one of the updates offered was an upgrade to IE9. The update was successful. After re-booting I tried to open the browser, but nothing happened. I mean nothing....after double clicking the shortcut, nothing happened. So I went to Run and typed in "iexplore.exe"......again nothing. So I went back to the updates section and looked at the update history....yes it was there "Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows Vista" and the status was "successful".

She uses Google Chrome most of the time, so I didn't worry about it for a couple of days. But then I noticed that I could not print any email messages from Windows Mail. I googled that problem and learned that Windows Mail get its instructions from IE. At that point I decided enough was enough and proceeded to try to uninstall IE9 and revert back to IE8.

Again after googling, I learned that an IE9 uninstall has to be performed from the Installed Updates section of Control Panel>Programs>Programs and Features. Here is the big problem....when I click on "view installed updates", the IE9 update is nowhere to be found.

So I am stuck and asking for help. My computer shows that IE9 was successfully updated in the Windows Update section (when I dig down and look at the details the version is listed as 9.0.8.112.16421).....but it doesn't work, nothing happens when I try to open it. ... Read more

I had problems trying to install SP1 eons ago, and got scared away from it after reading numerous problems I didn't understand. Yes I feel dumb.

I did not realize that my updates weren't installing, and just found these when I tried to update my firewall and it said I couldn't without SP1.

I've included the list of updates (36 in all), but I don't know which (if any) is SP1. I don't want to install something that needs a prior update, so I would truly appreciate some guidance on how to proceed.

I installed Win7 using a manufacturer disk on top of Vista (not clean install).

After that, I had about 200 important and 80 optional updates to install.

I installed about half of the important and none of the optional.

Now I am installing newer updates and checking which to stay away to prevent Win10. I looked and couldn't find any of the 10 updates in the important update list. I did, however, find some in the optional updates list.

I have been reading a lot how MS installs these win10 updates automatically, but in my case, they are listed as optional. I wonder why, is it because MS changed their policy or because my laptop is pretty old and w10 is not recommended?

Anyways, here is the list of important updates still left to install. Could you more experienced members please take a look and tell me if I should avoid any of these?

Thank you.

A:Windows 10 GWX update KB3035583 listed as optional

None of those are on my list of "to avoid", but that doesn't mean you need them all or that you won't end up in Windows Update hell for whatever reason.

This is a PC not a Laptop, and I always have my HDMI connection connected

Processor - AMD A8-5500

Graphics - Amd Radeon hd 5700 Series

OS - Windows 8.1 64 bit
After a windows update this morning (not the update from 8 to 8.1) I no longer have an HDMI playback device listed in my sound options. I have since updated both my Graphics card drivers and my processor drivers, my realtec driver, and downloaded an Auto-detect driver updater from AMD just to make sure. When that didn't work I uninstalled my audio driver in my device manager, rebooted my computer, let the computer re-install the audio driver, and still nothing. All I show as playback devices are Speakers, Headphones, and 2 Digital Audio (S/PDIF). I have show connected and disconnected both checked at this screen. Any suggestions, I am really at my wits end with this? This did happen to me after I updated from 8 to 8.1 but re-installing drivers fixed the issue, but that is not working this time.

Here is the list of KB's MS is trying to push to this laptop:

KB3167679,
KB3175443,
KB3177723,
KB3177725,
KB 3178034,
KB890830.

I see several unique KB's referenced as a means to circumvent this complication in each post regarding this issue. How do we determine what the best course of action is for me to take to resolve it?

Hi,
The free offer expired July 29th
I'm not a fan of hiding updates they only get revised and return
I'd personally Unhide all of them and if you don't want them just leave them to collect digital dust in the Optional section.
Assuming you already have your update settings to excluded recommended updates from being mixed into Important updates section which it sounds like you do already

Hello all,Recently, my sister installed the fake antivirus "palladium pro" onto the system. Using a thread from this forum, I was able to remove it. However, I am still confused by a host of problems my computer seems to be experiencing...although nothing I've done seems to be able to fix it!A list would probably be easiest, so:1. The service, "Windows Audio" will NOT start automatically. -I have set it to automatic. I have set it the dependencies to automatic. -Seems to be "random" in the sense that sometimes it won't load, sometimes it will stop working in the middle of watching a movie, or playing a game, etc.2. My browser will automatically and RANDOMLY connect me to random websites that I have never seen before. -The firefox addon NO-SCRIPT is sort of helpful in the sense that all of the pages run scripts to re-direct me to google, or something else.3. The theme for my computer, Windows XP style, is RANDOMLY changed to the WINDOWS CLASSIC style, without my input. Sometimes it is IMPOSSIBLE to change back, as in the settings the windows XP theme is not available anymore...it is not even on the list. -I attempted removing the theme, but it will still change randomly. -Sometimes I can change it back, sometimes it is unavailable. -It will usually freeze up my computer to the point of manual restart.4. I am unable to connect to the windows update website. It will return "unable to connect" or "connection was reset.&qu... Read more

As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.
If specs matter:

AMD Athlon ll X4 750K
AMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3

A:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:

Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.

You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silver... I would like to delete the failed updates list in Windows 7 Update.  I have done this in the past but forget exactly the process.

I think you go to Windows Folder-Software Distribution.  After deleting everyhting in the folder., i think you are to restart the computer.  Once finished the list of updates in Windows Update will be cleared.

Please correct if I am wrong.  Thanks in advance for your assistance.

A:Failed Updates in Windows Update. Want to clear update list?

This is the way I suggest :

Go to start > type in cmd > right click at cmd.exe > Run as Administrator.

Type in "net stop WuAuServ" without quotes > hit enter.

Type in "start %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore" without quotes > hit enter. A folder will come up. Don't close that black window.

Rename file "DataStore" to "DataStoreold" without quotes.

Go to that black screen, Type in "net Start WuAuServ" without quotes > hit Enter. After it finished you can close it.

Now your Windows Update logs will now cleared.

Thank you.

So, I don't really know any details of what malware I may have on my computer other than its symptoms and the likelihood that it came through utorrent (which has since been taken off the computer). Basically, the problem began manifesting itself with the BSOD in Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I think I have taken care of that problem. The remaining symptoms of the malware are that windows and windows defender cannot update itself. Also, I cannot download any type of anti-virus update software or even the programs themselves. The updates just say they were unsuccessful. When I attempt to do a manual install/update of anti-virus or windows updates I get a "cannot connect to webpage". Sometimes, I will be redirected from an anti-virus download site to a random unaffiliated site. When I attempt to run a free online virus scan, the update will not work and therefore there is no ability to scan.

Thanks for whatever help you can offer. Eric

Which computer do you want to install Win 7 on?

The message "Working on updates 12%" has been hanging on the screen for the last 12 hours on my desktop pc.

I had the same problem, though at a different point in the update process, with my laptop.

I had to abandon the update on my laptop and reinstall.

Do I have to go through all that a gain with my Desktop?

I'm very frustrated and thinking of reverting to Windows 7.

Does anyone have some suggestions to correct the stalled update procedure.

Many thanks

These three updates: Image Link

I can't get these 3 updates to well, update. I've allowed them to Install several times. I've shut the computer down completely to allow them to install, but when I reboot later the updates reappear. Do I need to disable something? I can't figure out how to complete these updates.

A:3 Updates Won't Update?

MS has had a bug problem with updates in the past few releases. I believe they canceled three or more, I would pursue that angle.

I've got a bum update.

It says, turn off and install updates. I say fine. It says installing 1 of 1... don't turn off your computer - and stays that way for 8, 10 and 12 hours (for the first three times I tried it). I thought after yanking the power the first time, that it might actually install the second or third time around, but it appears that it is not going to ever actually install.

How can I remove this update, and re-download it to try it again? Or... is there another solution?

I'd like to turn off my computer and have it go off. I'd also kinda prefer to be able to install new updates, when they come around, instead of skipping any updates from now on.

Hi everyone,
I've read all the threads here about this issue, I realise I'm not alone with it. I've tried everything I've seen mentioned on other people's threads, I've googled and also tried the MS Fix it thing along with trying a system restore... which failed miserably and didn't work. I have the block Win 10 app suggested here on my machine and manually pick which updates to get. It finds the updates easily enough, but won't download them. I've tried doing them one at a time, even a 131kb file just won't download. Yet somehow I did manage to get an update for Internet Explorer ( I never use IE but thought it might help the download process).

I"ve run scans, malware scans, run CC cleaner etc and can't figure out why they won't download. I've also tried clicking on the suggested updates and going to the MS site and getting them directly from there. That might have worked on one small one, but hasn't worked on any of the others. The others have got stalled during the installation bit.

Here is a pic of what I've been trying to download. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What's weird also is these are listed as coming out in March but I only got notified of them two days ago. I've been trying ever since to download them. My system is:

Hi Guys

This problem seems to go back to May when I noticed on my C drive that a lot of strange files were created and when I open them they mention things about SQL Server Editions.

I have attached a picture of these folders to this post.

Which when I google and go to Microsoft lead me to Windows NT which I have never installed.

I went onto the other side of this forum asking for help thinking that perhaps I had a virus but they were of the opinion that it was an automatic update and I had nothing to worry about.

So, I was sick of my C folder looking messy and created one folder and moved all of them into that folder.

Later on, it then tried to do an update but failed. I then moved them back out of the one folder so they were messy again.

However, it still fails to install the update.

Now, when I plug my Ipod into ITunes it doesn't recognise my Ipod and I can't update ITunes to the latest edition.

Also if I go to turn off my computer it tries to update Windows and even if I leave it overnight or all day whilst I'm at work it won't finish the updates so I have to turn the computer off and then back on for it to reboot.

I have done virus scans with Avira and Spyware Doctor but both of them say that I'm clean and don't have any viruses.

I'm hoping you guys can help me so that I can fix the mess I seem to have myself in.

A:Updates that Won't Update

What version of Windows are you running? You posted in the XP Forum, but your profile says Windows 7?
What part is ugly? This shouldn't be an issue with Windows 7. You can choose to not download the update in Windows Update and put a check in Do Not Remind Me of this Update.

Why would this be happening? Thank you!

Why is Windows 7 doing the BIG HAUL? usually it only does 10 or so then restart, 10 or so more, etc. etc. etc. when a new install comes in. but Windows is doing 173 ALL AT ONCE!!! it has been a half an hour and it's only on 15 of 173!!!

I Googled the problem but nothing relevant came up!!! but a bunch of odd results for programs or websites that have 173 in the name but NOTHING Windows 7 or Windows Update in the results!!! even though I included 'Windows 7' in the search query

Hi, I am trying Windows 7 professional 64bit is trying to update my PC now for the umpteenth time. I ask it to download and update. It tells me that it has updated and needs to restart. When it restarts, it has a couple of attempts at configuring the updates and lets me use Windows. When I turn my PC off, I get a 'Do not turn off, etc'. When I start my PC and check to see if the install worked, I am told it hasn't, any clues please?

A:Windows 7 updates don't update

I have been through this today and fixed mine.
There are ways MS suggests when you right click on the failed updates and read the help files that contain links to MS downloadable tools of sorts.
After reading about and trying some of the tools with no success I took a hint I read between the lines about running the one with "service pack" in its name alone. I had 10 updates available one of which had service pack in its title. It was "Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538243)"

I ran it alone and it took. Remaining were 4 security and 4 updates for windows and an IE9 update.

I then tried the 4 updates for windows alone and they failed.

Long story short, I tried some alone until they started working and got them all in.
Look at my screen shot and see the order in which I used. The order goes from the bottom up. The Hot Fix you see is one of MS's suggestions I tried that changed nothing.

As long as this is not every time eh?

Hi,

Bought an IBM Thinkpad T-60 used. Took it to my tech who wiped the 60 gb hard drive and reinstalled XP Pro. Laptop worked great until I downloaded Windows SP3. After the install the machine will download updates but won't allow them to install.

I went to Lenovo's website and their updates won't install either. Nothing specific in FAQ's and support forums for my particular problem.

I came across one forum which said to rename CatRoot2 in my System32 folder to BadCAtRoot2 but even though I have administrative access the software would not allow the rename to take place.

Any suggestions before I return it to my tech for another wipe and reload? I'd like to noodle this on my own.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello Edythe,

Those would just be device driver updates, and not required for Windows 8.1. It would be good to install them when you like to keep those drivers updated though.

Dell Optiplex 755, Win 7 Home. I have inherited this PC from the estate of a deceased uncle. I was with him when he purchased the PC so know it came from a legit source. Moreover, I have seen him successfully use it. The last recorded Windows updates are from July, 2015, when the PC ceased being used and a Win 7 sticker is still affixed to the case and the number is readable.

When I bring up the Windows Update site, I don't get an error code but do get a message telling me that 'system administrator' permission is required. So far as I know, there has only ever been one 'Administrator' user account account ever set up (and it still exists) and no password was involved, so far as I know.

As this may be a 'user' issue, how do I get to the 'super administrator' account and how do I get rid of any password that may have been established? Alternatively, would it be helpful to do a system reset to the date of the last update?

Otherwise, suggestions, advice, pointers to an appropriate tutorial, or anything else would be most appreciated as I would like to get this PC operating properly again

Hi forum. I'm hoping somebody can help with my pc issues. I have a toshiba sattelite running Windows 7 sp1 64 bit. For the last couple of weeks Ive had issues with updates not installing and now installing successfully but then installing again. One of the updates is IE 11 which fails to load but I have anyway running. I have tried lots of stuff like Fix it and microsofts hotfix and the latest thing was the repair thing from Tweaking.com all to no avail. My system appears clean as I have done lots of scans with all the recommended stuff. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Jay

As of Thursday evening, Sept 28, I've read a lot about a major Windows security flaw that may just have been "fixed" by MS, necessitating downloading and installing one or more updates from the windows update site. But whenever I go to that site, either manually or with automatic updates, which I have configured to alert me but do nothing further, I ONLY get told that an update to Windows Installer 3.1 is available.

Trouble is, I've downloaded that one four times now, and it always--ALWAYS--fails to install properly. When I tried to install it manually after downloading it manually, it failed with a small error window saying "access is denied"; nothing further. I've seen that one enough, when I had trouble installing the Windows XP Home SP2 update, that I just said "to =^(*^)(&% with it".

But now, it seems, that's the only update MS says is available to me.

Using some good advice from an earlier msg, I ran Belarc's analysis routine. Among other things, it reported nearly 50 critical updates it could not verify had been installed.

Am I in trouble or aren't I?

What should I do?

A:Windows Update reports NO updates?!

Your computer specifications tell me that SP2 is installed and you said in your last post = when I had trouble installing the Windows XP Home SP2 update, that I just said "to =^(*^)(&% with it".

Question is was SP2 fully installed?

The other thing that makes me wonder is the thing about the other 50 or so updates that do not show installed in Belarc. I would like you to download this update for Belarc and install it and rerun it.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop that runs Windows Vista SP1. Last Monday it had shut down and the only thing I could do was to reformat and install Vista. I checked in BIOS and the hard drive was recognized. There are 3 gigs of RAM recognized. After installing, I was able to install all the drivers and all looks well in the Device Manager. I put Microsoft Security Essentials on and updated the virus definitions. I thought the next thing I should do is to install Windows Updates. That is where my problem started. When I first checked it showed 9 updates that needed to be installed. As I've done installation before I knew that wouldn't be all but after the installation I checked and all were installed and showed as successful in the Windows Update History. After that I checked again and it showed 111 updates. I went ahead and started the installation of the 111. All were installed and after restarting and having windows complete all three steps of installation I checked and the Windows Update History shows that the files have failed. I don't think that is possible as I saw successful insulation.

I am going to assume that they were installed. Is there a way I can erase the Windows Update HIstory so I won't see the failed installations? I know I've done that once before but it has been a long time and I just don't remember.

Thanks in advance for any and all help. I really appreciate it.

I have disable the in the settings for hardware installations for driver installations as i like to update driver myself such as sound drivers, network and video drivers. Those are basically the 3 drivers that i update including security updates. By using wushowhide, i can see the drivers updates that have been block such as intel pci serial port root, watchtimer and lpc controller and etc. Does it improve performance or should i leave it alone? What does updating those driver do?

A:Windows Update Driver Updates

I can only speak for myself, others may have different views. I recently had a number of problems related to Windows 10 Updates [including drivers].

For the present my policy is to go directly to the relevant manufacturer for driver updates. A review over a number of forums, Intel in particular reveals Intel and Microsoft apparently unable to resolve problems caused by updates. I'll stick with Intel for the moment.

Hi try clicking " Restore hidden updates" which can be seen in your screenshots.
If that does not work follow this : Windows Update - Reset
If your problem still occurs Try pressing "change settings" under windows update change it to never check for updates, then press ok. Next change it back to recommended settings, always check.... and so on, then press ok.
Please provide feedback, with how this goes.

Hi HP experts. Last night i made a clean install with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit with service pack 1 included - when that said i can only see one update in installed updates, and its kb 976902. And i also installed the nessecary drivers, and Trend Micro as my Internet Security - so far so good. For about 12 hours Windows Update has now been running without finding any updates at all, and it keeps running. I have tried in Windows firewall to make a firewall rule for C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe - because i read somewhere that it might be the firewall that blocked Update - and i have tried to run the windows update diagnostic tool, and it said it solved a couple of things and then i restarted the laptop but still no luck. I hope that one of you can help me on the way to a functioning Windows Update, so do any of you have a solution ? It would be very much appreciated. Also i have to say that i have a reserve laptop, where i for a long time ago also made a clean install with windows 7 home premium 64 bit, and on that one it takes a very long time to run update also, but a least it finds something. So perhaps i a doing something wrong on both laptops ?

A:I Can't Find Updates With Windows Update

RE : SFC /Scannow gives me unable to fix some of the corrupted files

Please run this image restorehealth command............................
In the same Command Prompt (Admin) windows, copy and paste this command...........

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

> press Enter.
Again it will take some time.
When finished, it will give you a report.

If it fails to finish and you get an error message " sources file could not be found ", then use this Tech Bench link below and download the ISO file. You need to do that because you need the Install.wim file which only Tech Bench will provide.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/techbench

Once you have the iso downloaded, right click at the ISO > click Mount > leave it there.
Then open the same command prompt (Admin), and copy and paste this................

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:H:\sources\install.wim:1 /limitaccess

Note : H is the drive where the iso is mounted. Change it if your driver letter is different.

When it is completed, you should get the report that the operation is successful.
Now run the sfc /scannow again. It should be ok this time.

Windows Update has become erratic, currently gets stuck in the "looking for updates" phase. I have followed the instructions on this forum titled "Windows Update Posting Instructions." Ran the SURT with no issues reported. The SFC scan came back clean as well. There are no error codes like the example shown, on the WU screen, but at one point there was a pop-up box (I believe in conjunction with Windows Update Standalone Installer) with error 0x8024001e which may or may not now be resolved. The MS Genuine Advantage Diagnostics Tool has not helped. Also along the way I was advised to install Hotfix for Windows KB947821, which I did. Compressed CBS file will not upload to this post because it is too large (about 6MB).

All this is way above my pay grade as a non-tech user, but I think I have followed the instructions correctly. Any wisdom greatly appreciated!

BEFORE doing anything drastic such as resetting WU, try this -

Windows Update Settings - Change

Open Windows Update
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Never Update...'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Now open Windows update again
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Update automatically'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Open Windows Update, and do a manual Check for Updates.

Hello,

I just installed Win7 on my Asus K95VJ laptop and Windows Update is not working. I tried the troubleshooting from Microsoft "Windows Update Cannot Check For Updates" error message when you try to install updates but without any luck.
If I select from that webpage to automatically fix my problem, I get the results from my Untitled2.jpg printscreen.
When I go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services, the 3 services that are required for Windows Update to work appear with status Started, but not Running. See my Untitled.jpg printscreen. I tried restarting them without any luck.
I don't know what to do anymore and I don't understand why it's not working... please help me out.

A:Windows Update cannot currently check for updates...

Well, this is awkward, but I fixed it I found the solution somewhere else. I had to go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\Logs and delete edb.log (it's a .txt file), then restart the computer. For I don't know what stupid reason, that edb file was corrupt and prevent Windows Update from running. Deleting it made Windows replace it with a brand new one and fixed my problem.

You said they do not download OR fail but then you said they failed, which is it?

Make sure you have restarted your computer since then. Try updating ONLY important updates, possibly selecting a few at a time to download and update. Let me know if it still fails. Restart>select some updates (important ones first, then slowly working your way to other updates you want to have installed)>installl>restart again. If it works keep doing this method

These two things likely don't have an effect on the updates, but try them anyway:

1. Do you know if you have all your drivers currently updated?

2. Has windows been activated yet?

I just updated my 64-bit PC with the anniversary update, as confirmed by the changes to the notification at far right, and all programs showing on the start menu.

But then, I tried the update on my 32-bit PC, which I started and let run while away from it. When I came back, Windows had restarted, so I assumed that it had updated. However, the notification icon is still to the left of the date in task bar and the start menu at left, still as it was. As it appeared the update did not work, I went into Windows updates again, where I was advised there were none available.

I assumed that if it failed, that it would be available again under updates, however now not sure what happened?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update: Found the Windows Update Assistant and running it shows that I had 1511 version and not the Anniversary 1607. I'm thinking now that the updates were all for 1511 and not the anniversary update.
Anyway, continued with the 1607 update that fully downloaded, verified and started the update. About 15% of the way, it failed with error 0x80070570. Tried it twice with same result. Any ideas?

I have gone to hidden updates and was able to download an update that was about 2 months old with no problem.I have Malwarebytes and VIPRE security so I normally have Windows Defender turned off,but on two seperate ocaisions I have turned Windows Defender back on and Windows Update searched and found updates and I had no problem downloading and installing them.It even found the update for the newer Windows Update that I agreed to and insalled.

Hi and welcome

What error message are you getting on fail?

If no message you can go into event viewer (type eventvwr in search) go to the windows logs>applications tab, and systems tab. Look for updates and see what event ID and "source" are listed and let us know what they are.

I recently noticed that it's been 2 weeks since my laptop scheduled an auto installation of windows updates on Sundays so I decided to check if any new ones were available. When I clicked on Check For Updates, I received the following message:

"Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer."

I restarted but nothing changed. I also went into the settings and selected never update, applied, then exited, then went back and re-selected auto update and install and applied but again, the same result.

I have no idea how to restart or reset the windows update so it will work.

I would really appreciate if you could please help me correct this problem.

Thank you for your time and looking forward to your replies.

A:October updates from microsoft update

I've had similar issues since installing the abovementioned patches - starting up after restart has had some strange behaviours like long loading times on a blank screen, and during the first restart after the installation it actually got part way through startup and threw up some message about the registry and restarted.. since then I haven't een that message again.

BUT, since this I also haven't been able to get internet connection at all, using either LAN cable or wireless. I've rebooted many times, and at the time of doing the updates i had been using a LAN cable with no issues before all this. Just got home and same behaviour on wireless - i seem to be connected "locally" but internet wont work, and pinging the gateway or anything else returns "General Failure".

I tried uninstalling the 5 Vista-specific patches (ie, the ones not mentioning office, etc) and made no difference. I'm loathe to uninstall ALL the other patches because I don't know which one is causing this.

Anyone else had this and been able to fix it?

Thanks,

Hi
Today it dawned on me i had not seen any windows updates in quiet some time and also my AV Eset had not indicated updates were available either. When attempting to check updates via control panel it hung for quiet some time with a blue spinning circle the eventually took me to the check for updates screen which is red. After clicking the update button i received the dreaded notice"Windows cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running",after readiing up on the problem i have tried the various Microsoft fixes that state they have fixed various problems but still cant update,i have tried stopping the update service and deleting the software folder and restarting the update service but still nothing.
At a guess i think the last updates i did was the November ones which finished with a some updates failed to install properly.
I have also tried the downloads Brink has posted on the site but this has not resolved the problem so i guess its over to you guys/gals to try and help me fix this problem.

While looking into recently installed Windows Updates I noticed something strange.

This month there were five Important Office 2007 updates offered to me. I installed them and it shows this in Update History. But when I look in Installed Updates (where I would need to uninstall from) it lists 20 something updates from that same date.

How is this possible? Are there other updates within the main update? I've never spent a lot of time looking at Installed Updates but it seems this may occur for other updates as well.

A:Update History vs. Installed Updates

They often do not match. Mine don't.

"View Update History" often only shows more recent updates.

The one marked "Installed Updates" shows the entire list and allows for uninstalling them if necessary.

Nothing to worry about.
