Q: Problems with AOL 9.0 SE Optimized on Vista

DELL Inspirion 531s Windows Vista Home Premium SP #2

Recentlly uploaded AOL 9.0 SE on Vista, and everything seemed to go fine, but whenever I sign off, I keep getting a message saying do not turn off machine its installing updates. Okay, i've seen this message when I was using XP periodocally, but the process went through quickly and no problems. But with Vista, it seems to be everytime I sign off I'm getting this updating message, and it literally takes about an hour for the update to go through. I've uninstalled, and re-installed the software, but when I sign off its the same problem all over again. Being a long time AOL customer this is very strange, so my question is should I be using a higher Version of AOL with Vista?
Thanks in Advance..

A: Problems with AOL 9.0 SE Optimized on Vista

The problem you are having may not be an actual problem or even with your AOHELL software. I have to say this or else I could not go on, GET RID OF AOHELL PLEASE.

Ok now we can move on

Log into your computer as administrator and run windows updates. On Vista it can be found under START > All Programs > Windows Update. Do not worry how long it will take as this is relative to each computer and what it needs. Just install the important/crital updates leaving the optional ones alone for now. Wait until Windows downloads and installs all of them and you may have to restart your computer once or twice.

BTW: Uninstall that software completely from your system. Then create a restore point if you dare to install it again Here are a couple of places for reference.

I've been trying to upgrade the AOL software on my girlfriend's computer from 7.0 to 9.0 optimized, and everytime I run the setup, it goes till about 85% and then it just stops and the following message comes up:

Thank you for trying America Online. We're sorry that you have decided not to install the America Online software at this time. We invite you to install the AOL software again at your earliest convenience.

If you have questions about installing the AOL software, connecting to the AOL Service or registering your account, please call 1-866-489-4698.

You can Print or Save this information by clicking on the appropriate buttons below.

Two easy ways to start AOL installation again:

1. Just click on the "Retry AOL 9.0" icon on your Windows desktop.

2. If you installed America Online from a CD-ROM, remove it from your CD drive. When you are ready to try again, just put the America Online CD-ROM back into the CD drive and installation will begin automatically.

Follow the easy instructions to install AOL, and if prompted, enter the registration number and password found in your AOL software kit.

Thanks again for trying! We hope to see you online soon.
Another thing that may be of interest is that I've also been trying to upgrade her Real One software so she can watch music videos and stuff, and everytime I download that upgrade, it can never carry out the installation cuz it says there are problems. I'm pretty sure this isn't ... Read more

Hi everyone

I'm experiencing several problems with an optimized win7 installation, though that i've been working on this through months.

I've already solved most of them, but there are some that i can't solve, and the system itself doesn't help (The error messages don't match with the actual causes, the troubleshooter doesn't work, etc)

My main problem now is starting some services, such as Windows Event Log and WLAN autoconfig.

All their dependencies are satisfied, all the associated files and dll's are working and registered, but i still get the same message error:
It doesn't specify what is the path that it can't find, but all paths associated to that service on the registry are working, i've checked it many times.

I can't update the system again, but the system was updated in october, and all updates were ok, there were no problems.

I have a single user, and there are no permission issues anymore, all the system and service profiles are also functional, and all drivers are updated and working.

I've also cleaned the registry and scanned for issues, none have been found.

The only other problem i have now is with the Windows Update system, once CBS Manifest is corrupted, and i just can't find a way to correct it (all given solutions on internet fail with me, nothing can correct this, but all files associated to CBS Manifest are ok, i don't know why it says it's corrupted)

So, do anyone know what can i do?

Here are some other screenshots to help:

Im pretty sure I ran into this a few months ago when I tried to use optimized mode. try control panel, system and security, advanced tools, open task manager, click on services tab, click on services tab with the security shield on bottom. use scrollbar to scroll down to WLAN Auto Config, right click, open properties make sure the start up type is set to manual unless you are on a Wire Less Area Network then set to automatic. if your system detects disabled it will give you this error. also check dependencies tab and make sure that the services that WLAN depends on and check to make sure they are set to manual or auto depending on if you are wired (manual) wireless (auto) even though i am not on a wireless network I still got the error code and the program I used also installed a floppy drive in my system where I have no drivers or support for one on my system at all and it put it first in my boot sequence. really slows the boot time. the time I spent fixing the problems with the optimized mode was about a billion times the time optimized mode saved me in my daily use. I have tried several different programs and configurations to get the most out of my system and have found that all of these programs do not work. they all take up space on your hard drive and embed them in your startup menu and suck on the efficiency of your system. I honestly spent over 100 hours researching, downloading programs, reconfiguring my system according to the "experts" and un doing such c... Read more

Hi,
This issue could be caused if Defragment take operation on SSD. And as we know SSD cannot be defragged.

To check if your SSD has been defragmented, please run following powershell command:

Get-EventLog -LogName Application -Source "microsoft-windows-defrag" | sort timegenerated -desc | fl timegenerated, message
Judging by the drive letter, you can easily see if your SSD drive gets defragmented. The SSD volume below has been correctly re-trimmed first, but then erroneously defragged.
You can try following steps to avoid defragmentation of your SSD:
Exclude SSD from automatic maintenance
Open the disk optimizer (dfrgui):

Press "Change Settings".
Press "Choose" and remove checkboxes from SSD volumes.
In addition, I will document it and confirm with product team if it is by design.
Keep post.Kate Li

Hi,
This is not for Gaming but for Music creation but the same theme applies.

Is there any way to either set up Windows (7 in my case) so that I can instantly have the current drive, running only limited applications?
If I swap USER accounts I will lose administrative and personalised settings.
At the moment I open task manager and manually end processes each time I need to free up resources which is a pain.
If I could set up a preconfigured environment to run at the click of a mouse that would be great!!
Even better would be if, when I launch my Music Workstation it automatically launches this environment.

Any ideas?

Mike

A:Optimized 'template' ?

You can go to Start > Run > Type "Services.msc" and right-click properties on the services you want to halt. Under "Startup Type" change it from Automatic to Manual.
What this will do is not load that service until it is needed.
For example if you set Print Spooler to Manual the only time that service will start is when you open up a Word document and go to print. However once the service has started you'll need to stop it again.

There are programs like Tuneup Utilities which you can select services to be disabled and tuneup will automatically enable the service when needed and then disable it again.
This program is the safe option as it wont allow you to stop critical system services.
Tuneup also has the feature to add programs to the startup list on a Delayed Start to that your system has time to load first, then loads your music program.

I'm a very avid gamer and I've been trying how to configure my system solely for gaming and I was looking for some help with that such as which services I can stop/disable (so they don't run on startup) and etc. I'm not sure exactly what information I'll need to provide for someone to help me with this so yeah.

A:Optimized for gaming

It all depends on whether the gaming includes internet usage or not?

Plus you can create a batch file to stop the services before running the game and another one to start the services when you have finished with the game...this works out pretty well.

Welcome to the Seven Forums

Windows 7 does not need any optimizing software. You will do more harm than good with any of them, then you will be back here asking questions why your computer is not working right.
Do not use any of them.

When I installed Crysis demo, I knew it wasnt going to run great. But when I clicked on optimized settings, it put everything in medium quality. It was slooow. Then I got Medieval War II and clicked on optimized settings and it set everything to high which makes the game very laggy. It seems like no matter what the game is, whenever the game optimizes itself, it always thinks that my computer can do better than it actually does.

My question is this. Is there something I have to change in the setting of my computer or do all games do that? Maybe graphics card settings? I know my computer is not a gamer rig but it can barely play RTS games even though I have recommended system requirements for all of them.

My Specs:

Pentium D 3.4 Ghz
2 GB Ram
250 GB HDD
ATI Radeon 2400 Pro PCIe with 256GB

Thanks

A:Optimized settings

Dang, if that system can't play games then very few can. You have the hardware, have you checked for updated drivers for the video card? That could help, but I can't imagine it would fix that extreme of a problem.
Have you checked to see if anything else was using the CPU while you are trying to play the game? Are you playing local or over the network? Sorry .... more questions that answers.

Hello allCan the following solution be optimized somehow or am I stock with this very slow working array formula?I have a sheet with the following data: A B C
1 111 2011 1
2 111 2012 1
3 111 2013 2
4 222 2015 1
5 222 2011 1
6 333 2014 1
7 333 2011 2
8 333 2012 3
9 444 2015 1
10 444 2012 1The first column is ID numbers, the second column is a year, the third column is a priority number, where 1 is first priority and so on. What I need is a solution that returns either the year 2011 or the year 2012, based on which priority number they have. 2011 is also first priority, so if 2011 and 2012 for a given ID number has the same priority, then 2011 has to be returned, but if 2012 has the highest priority, then that has to be returned. 2011 and 2012 will always be in the data set for all ID numbers, so no worries there.I then have those ID numbers (one of each ID number) in a separate list in the same sheet and in the column next to it, I have the following array formula to get the year I need for that particular ID number:{=INDEX(B:B;
IFERROR(MATCH(1;(I1=A:A)*(1=C:C)*(2011=B:B);0);
IFERROR(MATCH(1;(I1=A:A)*(2=C:C)*(2011=B:B);0);
IFERROR(MATCH(1;(I1=A:A)*(3=C:C)*(2011=B:B);0);
IFERROR(MATCH(1;(I1=A:A)*(1=C:C)*(2012=B:B);0);
IFERROR(MATCH(1;(I1=A:A)*(2=C:C)*(2012=B:B);0);
MATCH(1;(I1=A:A)*(3=C:C)*(2012=B:B);0)
))))))}It surely does what I want, but it is very very slow!Any suggestions on how to make this more efficient or maybe another approach? Thanks a lot in advance/Jacob

A:Can this approach be optimized?

Without even trying to understand what your doing, change your formula so you DO NOT use the entire columns.Do you really need to search all 1,048,576 rows?Just use the range of data required. MIKEhttp://www.skeptic.com/message edited by mmcconaghy

A:How can I go to windows xp from a 7-optimized laptop?

If HP does not provide XP drivers (have you looked?) for that machine the probability that you can find adequate ones somewhere is low. Rather than buying XP and going through all the hassles of (maybe) finding drivers you would be better off upgrading the machine if it is underpowered and stick with Windows 7. What Windows 7 version do you have? How much memory?

How can I revert back to IE8 that is NOT optimized for msn and bing? I don't use either, I use google. Also, this IE8 is giving my weird issues, for example: when trying to type a post on a forum or on facebook it limits the number of characters I can type in the text field. Once I reach a certain number of lines it just won't display beyond it and I cannot type anymore. I know it's this computer (if not the version of IE8 on this computer) because I don't have that problem on my laptop.

What does "Load Optimized Defaults" do in BIOS? I am curious, I have a problem and this might be one of my options.

Thanks

A:Load Optimized Defaults

It loads the default settings...which are supposed to provide the best chance of booting.But...if the system was set up via a network install, then it may make the boot order one that produces an error...as the system tries to boot from a network connection, rather than the hard drive or optical drive.I would suggest to always check what the boot options are...after using/loading the optimized defaults. If the first option is not the hard drive, then I would change it (assuming that I have already installed Windows on a hard drive).More InfoLouis

Hi,
I have been using Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit for an year now, and recently noticed that the "Currently Allocated" virtual memoy is 3063 Mb, while the "Recommended" VM is 4594 Mb. I have 3 Gb physical memory installed. Even after I check the "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" option, the VM remains 3063 Mb. What should be the optimal VM setting in Win'7 for me to derive the best performance from my PC ? Please advise.

A:Virtual Memory - optimized settings

Quote:
How Big Should I Make the Paging File?

Perhaps one of the most commonly asked questions related to virtual memory is, how big should I make the paging file? There’s no end of ridiculous advice out on the web and in the newsstand magazines that cover Windows, and even Microsoft has published misleading recommendations. Almost all the suggestions are based on multiplying RAM size by some factor, with common values being 1.2, 1.5 and 2. Now that you understand the role that the paging file plays in defining a system’s commit limit and how processes contribute to the commit charge, you’re well positioned to see how useless such formulas truly are.

Since the commit limit sets an upper bound on how much private and pagefile-backed virtual memory can be allocated concurrently by running processes, the only way to reasonably size the paging file is to know the maximum total commit charge for the programs you like to have running at the same time. If the commit limit is smaller than that number, your programs won’t be able to allocate the virtual memory they want and will fail to run properly.

So how do you know how much commit charge your workloads require? You might have noticed in the screenshots that Windows tracks that number and Process Explorer shows it: Peak Commit Charge. To optimally size your paging file you should start all the applications you run at the same time, load typical data sets, and then note the commit charge peak (or... Read more

Windows 7 64 bit Basic
AMD Phenom II x4 960T BE oc @3.2GHz
AMD Radeon HD 6800 series (6850's) Crossfire
700watt PSU (Modxstreampro)
8Gb of Patriot DDR3 ram

I play Dayz a lot. Amazing game, but terrible performance. I sometimes have to deal with ten frames per second. I rarely ever get over thirty frames. I have added in startup parameters in Dayz Commander to help the game perform better, I have tweaked my settings and tried several things to boost FPS.
Is there anyone else that falls victim to this as well? Can someone give me some suggestions on how to increase my performance? And I am already planning on getting an EVGA Gtx 680 2gb for the standalone, but I don't know how much of a performance boost that will be on the mod as it is.
Also, I run Core Temp and TechPowerUp GPU-Z constantly and I monitor the loads and temps on my second monitor. I notice that I rarely ever get over a forty percent GPU load. When I enter big cities with lots of action going on my GPU load goes straight to zero and that's when I get the worst FPS. My processor hits a little over fifty percent load but it varies between cores. It doesn't seem like I am using the most out of my hardware. This is frustrating. I think Dayz has to be the worst optimized game I have ever played. I can play newer better graphics games maxed out and get over sixty frames.

hello forum,

all of a sudden my external HDD (USB) is no longer performance optimized.
usually the properties window of the device has a tab "policies" where you can choose between "quick removal" and "better performance".

after recent system changes (BIOS update, windows updates, formatting the external HDD) i observed very poor performance.
i then noticed the following:
1) the device no longer shows up in systray / notification area for safe removal
2) the properties dialog no longer has the policies tab!

so it looks like the operating system has permanently activated the "quick removal" (write caching disabled) now and won't allow me to change it to "better performance" (write caching enabled, systray icon for safe removal).
but why?
and how to change it back?
some additional notes notes:

a) windows 7 is still showing proper behaviour for other removalbe devices (e.g. USB thumbs driver). it seems to be specific to my external HDD.

b) the external HDD is formatted with NTFS.

c) this is a dual boot system (win7 x64, win xp x86). my external HDD doesn't show those symptoms when booting into windows xp. so i can rule out the bios update as root cause. it seems to be specific to win7.

d) my system has 12 GB of RAM. so the full memory is visible to win7 x64, but only 2.5 GB is visible to winxp x86.

A:external USB HDD no longer performance optimized

any ideas how to proceed?

Thanks for any help on this matter.

A:I E 8 Optimized for Bing and MSN Installed recently

Perhaps as part of the process of installing the new browser, IE8 was set to the current security or privacy settings and they are too high. I would think it would work with the defaults on the normal IE8 so first try to reset IE (tools/internet options/advanced/reset.) If that doesn't fix it, try lowering the security level or accepting more cookies under privacy. Perhaps the "helpful insrtuctions" will provide a clue as to how to change them.

Windows Explorer seems to automatically choose the display settings based on the content. When I open a folder that mostly contains mp3 files for example, the Columns display:
Name
#
Title
Contributing artists
Album
How can this "template" be changed to always include additional columns, such as "Duration"?

Is it possible to edit the Optimized Folder Templates to add or remove columns?

I am very interested to know if anybody knows the answer to this. Thanks

A:Optimized folder templates - editing

Yes, Antonimo, it is easy to add new columns or remove the ones that are already there. You right-click on any column header, choose "More" and then you have a near infinite list of possible columns. You can move them up or down the list, thus changing which column is shown first and so on.

Once you have achieved the set-up you want, you can go to Folder Options -> View and apply the chosen set-up to all folders of the same type. To choose the type, you click on the folder icon, then Properties -> Customize, but that you should do prior to choosing columns.

Hope that helps.

I stared my notebook And It blocked on the start screen. There is The hp logo only and the circle turn indefinitely. So, I lounched The System Diagnostic Test And I had the following error message: HD unit DST control - ID ERROR: RUN7Q3F-72683G-MFPV61-61T503.

A:Optimized HD unit DST control Error

Hi, Is the error code actually:    RU7Q3F-72683G-MFPV61-61T503 If so, it does confirm a failure of the optimized disk self test which basically means that some areas of the HDD occupied by the operating system are un-readable - this may well mean that the drive is failing and will need to be replaced. If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. If you are out of warranty and as long as the previous installation of Windows 10 had activated Ok after the upgrade from 8.1, you can try performing a clean installation as detailed in the guide on the following link.  Note: At the activation screen, select 'I don't have a Product key' - Windows will activate automatically once the installation has completed. http://www.howtogeek.com/224342/how-to-clean-install-windows-10/ If you still get the same error after a clean install, then the HDD will need to be replaced. Regards, DP-K

Hi, I would like to know if that Optimized pcie x4 NVMe SSD Bios update will work on my VN7-791G. It's listed for the VN7-792G as well as updated Realtek audio drivers that aren't listed for mine (although same Realtek audio) so I don't see why there would be a conflict. Same with the Synaptics touchpad driver. I'm thinking maybe the Acer update page just isn't up to date on my older Nitro. I can see  how the Intel Chipset driver would not work (I think) since I am running Haswell not Skylake. Any help would be appreciated.

So after a reformat of my computer, anytime I shut the computer off and cut off electrical power from either the PSU or the UPS my system will not load directly to windows, BIOS will come up saying that it has detected changes and offers to load optimized results or enter BIOS, going into BIOS I am able to see that all my custom settings have been overriden and I have to start all over.

I am thinking this is electrical, but find it strange that it happened after I reformatted and cleaned my computer.

The motherboard is an F2A85X-UP4

A:Motherboard trying to load optimized results occasionally

It likely that your CMOS battery (button cell) on your motherboard needs replacing. It's what maintains the BIOS settings when the PC is off.

I purchased my laptop computer about 1 1/2 years ago. A few months ago it was running slow so I upgraded the internet explorer (the version that is optimized for Bing and MSN) and now I keep getting these messages that IE is not responding. I talked to Toshiba and the guy said it might be a virus, but since my 1 year warranty had expired, he could only help me if I agreed to a $35 fee. That was out. So I did a system restore with the disks from Toshiba to restore my computer to the out of the box condition. I am still getting these messages and it is getting frustrating, because whenever I try to read my emails in either gmail or aol, it won't load and when I click on it again I get an error message that IE (not responding) I have also noticed that I get a message about a tab being recovered. I don't have a clue as to what is going on and I really need help. I have anti-virus software and I always update the windows and the Norton 360 software. I am getting somewhat frustrated since I have online businesses that I need to check on (some daily), but it seems as though I am spending half my day trying to get the pages to load and refreshing pages and all that. I am on skype so if this is something that needs a step by step instruction, please send me a note and give me a good time to connect with you on skype. My skype name is in my profile. NGO NVIDIA Optimized Driver
he NGO NVIDIA Optimized Driver is a tweaked version of the NVIDIA ForceWare driver. The main purpose is to satisfy the users with better performance and image quality. The Driver has support for all Geforce cards.

PCI Latency Tool
We decided to include this handy tool so you could adjust the PCI latency in order to avoid PCI bus choking. It helps optimize performance and resolve stuttering and sound issues. **It's recommended to set latency values to 64 for all your PCI/AGP Devices. This tool doesnt support PCI Express cards.

nHancer
With nHancer the creation and management of profiles is very easy, and the user receives as much assistance as he needs, to understand what he's doing.

**I need more info before I switch my pci/agp latency timer from 32 to 64.
Any input?

I have an Intel 865 and and Intel 955 based computers (the motherboards are themselves Intel) that are set up on a gigabit ethernet network. They are using the motherboard-based gigabit ethernet adapters. Are there any settings that I can make to the network adapters to optimize them for speed ? I need to transfer large .ts files between them. I was thinking things like enabling jumbo frames, etc.

Right now I am showing transfer rates of around 18-24 MB per second per my Vice Versa file transfer utility.

Thanks for any thoughts.

A:Network adapter optimized for file transfer speed

Jumbo Frames is pretty much the only thing you can set in the NIC configuration. Mind you, you need to enable it on all adapters connected to the network.

I assume you are copying files over Windows shares? You can apply some Windows tweaks to make SMB go faster, but it is just _slow_. You may have better luck using dedicated transfer protocols with no filesystem overhead like FTP. (Or iSCSI of course *g*)

Also, are you sure it is not your hard drives that are the bottleneck? 20MB/s could easily be the limit for a badly fragmented drive.

A:Hard Drive Short DST Check : WARNING and Optimized DST Check...

Yes you need to replace the hard drive. Since you have upgraded to Windows 10 it is very easy to get recovery media directly from the Microsoft Media Creation Tool. For most people, the problem is not physically swapping out the hard drive, but restoring the operating system since they do not have recovery disks. Post back if you want a service manual and/or video showing the replacement, purchase options for a new hard drive and step-by-step for restoring Windows 10. We would need the full model...g6-????

Do you press keys to make the BIOS setup appear? Optimized defaults can cause problems if some hardware is not up to the additional stress that is put on it by trying to run faster.

Just bought a new desktop from Dell that was pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Basic, later wanted to upgrade to Windows Vista Business, so I bought the Windows Vista Business separately from the retail store and try to install it.

But halfway during the upgrade installation, an error message popped up and says that some files are corrupted or something, with error 0X80070017, and the upgrade was cancelled.

I have tried many times which included doing a clean install or installing during boot time, all lead to the same error.

The copy of Windows Vista that I bought was a genuine copy and the hardware should meet all requirements, it's a Pentium D 915, 1 GB RAM with 160GB HDD.

Can anyone please help? I need to get the desktop upgraded to Vista Business by this week.

THanks.

This is driving me crazy.

We have a network with 6 PC's all running Vista , and 4 of them (2 Acer desktops and 2 Samsung Laptops) all share files fine. BUT we just added 2 new Acer 5535 laptops which WILL NOT share their drives nicely... though they will read other PC's drives just fine.

When connnecting to the Acer laptops over the network, they take aaaaaaaaages to respond, and client PC's often time out or hang. Indeed when selecting them from the network centre some times they don't respond at all.

I've tried:
deleting the AV software... improved slightly but not much
disabling the firewalls... no change
wireless and wired connections... no difference
Settings in Network and Sharing are exactly the same as all the other PC's......
Discovery on
File sharing on
Public folder sharing on
Printer sharing off
Password protected sharing off
Media sharing off

Running Vista Home Premium 32-bit, SP1.

Vista will not boot normally. I get to the black screen just before the Welcome, and then... nothing. Just a black screen.

I CAN start in safe mode with networking, however. I disabled EVERYTHING in the msconfig startup, as well as all non-Microsoft service, to no avail.

When I run ComboFix, I get the msg 'ComboFix is preparing to run', followed by 'Acess Denied. Administrator permissions are need to use the selected options. Use an administrator command prompt to complete these tasks'. I did right click on the CF icon on my desktop, and selected 'run as administrator' but got the same result.

If I just let it run as is, I get the usual 'Scanning for infected files... This typically doesn't take more than 10 minutes, etc...', but NOTHING ever happens for at least 15 minutes after which ComboFix finally does start. However, while its running through the 50 stages, embedded in those stages is the occasional ''Access Denied. Administrator permissions are needed....".

The completion of CF and subsequent restart did absolutely nothing to change the boot problem.

I do have a MS Vista install disk, and I've run Startup repair. No change.

Anyway, I have continued to play with safe mode & the vista boot disk, running sfc /scannow, running chkdsk /r, and running a series of bootrec commands at the command prompt accessed from the Vista boot disk, and still nothing....

I've gone into Event viewer after an unsuccessful atte... Read more

I am havign a problem where vista ultimate is not recognizing me high speed ports and Im getting a copy speed of 34kpbs.

Computer Stats:
Windows Vista Ultimate

Asus P5LD2 Rev. 2.0 mobo
Case / PSU Raidmax Smilodon
Monitor Dell 19" Widscreen
ATI Radeon 2600 HD Pro
Microsoft Intellipoint Mouse

1 HDD 80gb (Vista on it)
1 HDD 120gb (Old)

Im copying from my 4gb Cruzer Micro on my front USB port to my 80gb HDD.

On another subject, too lazy to make a new thread, it seems that my new monitor, the Dell 19" widescreen, it looks like most of the graphics are pizelated, any ideas.

Just tell me if you need any more information on either of these problems.

Hey man i dont know anything about your first query, but with second query, i bought a new 19" moniter for my PC and everything was pixelated and looked like there was gaps in the text and so on, this might sound simple and stupid and you may have already tried it...but I adjusted the screen resolution in properties menu, again you probably have tried that though.

What are you using to play them? And are there any other audio/visual problems ?

Most, if not all "OEM" (eg: HP, Acer, Dell, etc) systems come with a built-in player that should have no problems.

WMP does not have a codec that plays what most DVD movies use (mpeg2) -- so you would not even see a picture with one of those unless another DVD player were installed and it could use the codec that came with it.

Have had trouble viewing DRM content (specifically from afl.aussiesport.tv). Had no problem viewing when I was on XP. Have no idea bout computers but have updaed my driver (NVIDIA GE 9700M GT) and keep getting a message windows media player needs a component upgraded, t connects to server but then says it couldn't upgrade. Any help would be gold

A:DRM problems with Vista

There website contains some advice and other content regarding DRM. I've never had occasion to do any of it, but here's there advice >>

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925705/en-us

Also they note that the number of licenses available per subscription is limited (to 4 I believe) and that issues may result from attempting to obtain more than that.

There is also a support contact there which you may need to use.

http://www.afl.aussiesport.tv/page/Faq#l7
afterthought and footnote here: I never got the message about needing to "upgrade" a Vista/WMP11 component for DRM -- I did get it for a time on XP with Netflix.

My gut feeling is that for some reason the site is not properly detecting your Vista/WMP11 player for what it is. I don't really think anything there should need to be "upgraded".

Have there been any major hardware changes on this Vista system?

Hi,

I have a vaio laptop with Windows Vista, 64 bit. A week back I had to restore my system a few times and since then I have been facing a lot of problems.

Earlier when I used to close my notebook (without shutting it down), it used to go to sleep and when I opened it up, it automatically showed the screen where I put in my password and log in. Now, I need to hit 'Enter' or 'Space' to get the log in screen and just opening the notebook wont do it. I want to know if theres a way I can make it like before?

Also I am constantly getting problems with 'Iconstream' and 'PastIconstream' registries. I keep on deleting them and they keep coming back. What to do?

What do you do in this situation? A friend had a slow computer so I installed spybot, and a few other programs, sped it up, but it would then freeze after a while.

I reinstalled vista, copied the program files, and user stuff from windows.old back over to where it should go, and the files got removed from windows.old, but never got transfered to the new installation.

I spent over 48 hours working on this ****. I had to download a program to get most of her files back, but not all of them. She is in college, and needs all her school work which I am not sure if I got it all back or not until she sees it. I had to reformat again after I ran the program to recover the files cause it ****** something up, but I have the files on my other computer, and on an external hard drive.

How do I go about getting the files off my external hard drive, and back on the laptop without getting the files erased again? I tried moving the folders, and copying them, but when you copy, and paste it doesn't copy every file.

XP was so much easier.

Because of how Windows is designed, when you get a new installation you have to re-install programs, you can't just move the Program Files folder and expect it to work nicely.

The AppData folders you can generally move from the Windows.old, but be selective and ask yourself what really needs to be kept (I only end up moving Firefox and iTunes settings)

I have had an HP laptop with windows vista for about one year now. A few months after I bought it I installed some games. They worked fine then and throughout last summer untill one day it crashed, blue screen. I brought it in to Best Buy to see what they could do about it. They replaced the motherboard. There were still issues however. So then one day I decided to reformat it because if there was anything wrong, this should fix it. Now everytime I do something like type, watch a youtube video or things like that, it works perfectly fine. But every so often, the screen turns black and restarts itself when I am doing things that require more power.

I keep trying to figure out whats wrong because of how great it use to work. Is it a virus, faulty hardware? I have no idea.

Help appreciated,

In the interests of expedience, and because I'm not sure how lucky I'll get in fixing these two problems, I'm going to post them both here.

First off I'm on a three and a half year old Toshiba Satellite series laptop running Windows Vista Basic. I've had a variety of small troubles in the past but nothing that I couldn't eventually correct. At the moment I have two recurring problems that I cannot currently solve.

To begin with I've encountered something of an incessant error when it comes to extracting files that were in a .zip or .rar from a Mac. I can use both WinZip and WinRAR and encounter some sort of error message along the way. WinZip will give me an empty folder with a file the same name as the main folder and a Mac OS X file, while WinRAR will partially extract the files and randomly deem one of them corrupted, after which it will skip all subsequent files and give me a small margin of what the folder(s) actually should contain.

Google didn't avail me, nor did inquiring elsewhere, but the same files can be extracted using either of those utilities by friends on PCs so I'm not sure what the problem is.

The second is that lately my machine has gotten slower to start up, shut down, and operate whether online or not. I can't think of an explanation other than age for this sudden lag; I defrag once a month and run full virus scans nightly, as well as scanning for adware and spyware once a week. I monitor how much data I store on my laptop at any given time, ... Read more

A:Problems on Vista

Try Peazip and see if that helps in opening files.

There could be several reasons for your machine to run slowly - have you deleted all your temporary folders and cookies through internet options? Do you have adquate free space for the windows swap file, more memory may speed up your computer. Check you motherboard spec's and see if you can add more memory then you currently have
Windows OS systems can see and use up to 3 gigs of memory.

I ran into the same problem with my sisters machine and we added another 1gig of memory and deleted serveral files she wasn't using. But we could only add 2gigs, however her system did run a bit faster.

Do you have several icons in your system tray? type in msconfig in the run field and go to the startup folder. Uncheck anything that you do not use every day. That will free up memory. Basically I told my sister that she needs to get a more powerful processor - ie buy a new laptop - they are cheaper now then they were 3 years ago.

When I had vista I remember one service pak I loaded. Did you load another one by chance? I think they help slow down the computer if you don't have adquate memory. I have my firewall set so that I can see every update and often I don't accept updates to parts of the OS that I won't use.

These are some suggestions but bottom line - your better off buying a new laptop. Just copy your old files to an external dry and then you can copy them back into the new computer - ie documents, pho... Read more

Welcome to the Vista Forums!

Sorry that your having trouble but it sounds like you got a bug. Run a VIRUS/MALWARE. Then do the same in Safe Mode.

If you want open a Antivirus Program, try doing a System Restore, to an earlier date.

Go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore

If that fails sorry but you might have to reinstall Vista.

To-day I tried to open my Money file. What opened was the initial setting up of the file. I then tried to open the backup....it couldn't find a back up (in documents). I also had that file on a flash drive, so I copied it into documents. Tried again to open the backup in Money....it still couldn't find it. I tried to go into Documents to make sure it was there, got the message: "C:\Users\(Me)\Documents is not accessible. Access is denied." After a lot of fiddling around I finally got Money up and running. I don't remember what the final right move was. I don't know why Money opened as a new program, or why Documents was not accessible.

When I try to Backup the Money file, it wants to back up to a floppy. I tell it in the dialogue box to backup to the Flash drive. Without fail I will get the message that "the disk is full, insert 2nd disc" So I end up with the backup going into documents, then I send it to the flash drive from there. How can I back it up to the Flash drive directly?

Write down carefully what is listed and post the list here.

Ok so I've had this problem starting near the middle of December. I have 4 usb ports on my laptop, 2 on each side. One random day, both on the right side stop working. And what I mean by stop working is that they can still charge devices like my phone and ipod, but fail to transfer data. Same thing with the mouse, the mouse can't move but the red light will still light up.About a week later, I had a game up on my laptop (Bad Company2), and I left it on while I went out to feed my dogs. When I came back (about 5 minutes later), my computer was turned off. Noone else in the house was there so I was trying to figure out what happened. When I turned it back on one of the left usb ports was 'dead' when I turned it back on. Same story, the mouse lights up, but doesn't move. Also noted, whenver I pull the mouse out, I get the USB device not recognized error. I know its fairly common and I have tried all the tricks to fix it, including: 1. Shutting it off and unplugging the power cord 2. Uninstalling all the 'unknown device' from the Universal Serial Bus list in the Device Manager and rebooting. 3. Tried changing the power management settings for the usb ports. 4. System restore to a date before this started happening. All these did not work Occasionally I have to pull my mouse out of the 1 remaining fully functioning usb port and plug it back in to get it to work again. Here's a screenshot of my USB list in the Device Manager if it helps:Any help would b... Mod Edit: Split from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic434975.html ~ Hamluis.I have exactly the same problem with one of my client's laptops (it is Dell XPS M1530 with Vista Ultimate). All the symptoms you described word by word. The timing of this problem's appearance is also similar (I assume you started to experience it about November/December 2011; the time when you wrote your post, please correct me if I am wrong). I was told about the problem first time in November (as far as I remember). I eventually remedied it by re-installing the system (I have replaced the hard drive as it had bad clusters, now I think it developed them as my client's only way to deal with frustration was to shut the laptop down again and again and again). However after about a month of smooth running the problem resurfaced in exactly the same way, shape and form. I suspect either a virus or a Microsoft update are causing this problem. Have you had any luck with sorting it out? If so, wouldn't you mind sharing your solution?I have tried Malwarebytes (can't detect anything), Combofix (hangs forever when trying to generate report; eventually one must restart the machine and problem remains the same). There are some updates that the computer wants to have installed but I looked them up and they do not seem to be significant (Microsoft Office updates). I'm trying to help my mom buy a computer. I see most all come with Vista now and I have heard there are problems with it, but I can't find out what they are. She's looking at laptops and would use it mostly for internet surfing probably. It would be networked to their PC, which is running Windows XP Home. She basically doesn't know how to use a computer. She knows a few things but I will be helping her a lot. Anyway, is Vista ok for a first time computer user? I don't want her to have problems from an operating system, as I'm sure she'll have enough other problems with basic operation.

Recently I have run some registry programs like RegCure, Registry Mechanic, CCleaner, etc and I'm not sure if it affects my system.

1) Most of my programs in the Start menu are missing. Below are some of the examples:
a) Under "Accessories", I can only see Bluetooth File Transfer Wizard, Command Prompt and Run.
b) Under "Games", I can only see Game Explorer
c) Many programs shortcut like Window Defender, etc are missing.
d) I still do not know what else are missing.

2) Windows take some time to shut down and startup and also running of programs.

3) Previously I was able to watch video online but now it shows "Done, but with errors on page." I click to show details and it says the following:

"Problems with this Web page might prevent if from being displayed properly and functioning properly. In the future, you can display this message by doubling-clicking the warning icon displayed in the status bar."

I sincerely hope someone can help me with my problems. Thanks!

A:Vista having problems. HELP!!!

You really screwed up pngzhengli.

Your best bet is to get your windows DVD and just reinstall everything.

And in the future leave the registry cleners alone. They are dinosaurs in the new OS age. Vista does not need them and as you can see they can, and do more harm then good.

You could try a restore point, but I'm betting that they are MIA as well as your programs.

Im posting this for a friend who i have unsuccesfully tried to help. These are his words:
"As some of you might know im getting weird "lagspikes" in late game matches in dota lately. Its on a new computer ([email protected] 8800GTS 3gig ram) so the hardware should not be a problem, also it worked flawlessly in the past. The problem now though is that it usually happens after 30 minutes ingame, rarely in the start, then my computer freezes up, ventrilo and my mouse start acting up as well (can barely hear whats been said or move my mouse) so i become completely useless for like a whole minute, which can totally turn games around.

It all started on Vista after i installed some patch for civilisation beyond the sword, and i also built in 2gig extra ram (from 2 to 4).

The vista version i had back then only supported 3gig so i removed on ramstrip but it didnt help. I deinstalled civilisation but it doesnt help. I even put in a new harddisk and installed windows XP on it but im still getting these weird spikes...

I really dont know how to fix this, does anyone have any ideas?

Oh and i also checked for virusses/ malware and stuff with Trendmicro Housecall and Panda antivirus, nothing but a set of cookies found..."

I talked to him about the 4gig problems on 32 bit systems and so he removed one stick but as you see still has the same problems...

Any ideas?

A:Vista problems

Do not know what "dota" is, but he should try other games that require as much or more horse power to run.

It does sound like a hardware problem since it happens 30mins or so into a game... if software is buggy, it will happen all the time or when you hit the bug (ie: pick up a Super weapon in the tree house = crash).

Something maybe overheating (check the temps of CPU and GPU) or not enough power.

You can RUN 4GB on a 32bit OS, you just don't get access to all 4GB of RAM.

i tried to connect through a cable...but the laptop/vista isn't picking it up and keeps saying its "unplugged" when its not

i tried the cable in my old desktop...it connects straight away
so no problem with the cable itself

when i run the diagnostic on vista it just keeps saying to plug in a cable and try again...so i do, but it comes up again with the same thing

any ideas?

A:A Few Problems... Not Sure If All Vista

Have you tried saving your work and then rebooting your system? (not hibernate or sleep, but the actual "Shutdown" or "Restart" option)If this still happens after a reboot, is the effect immediate - or does it take a while to slow down?Have you scanned for viruses or malware using an independent, online scanner (in case something has gotten by your protection)? Here's a free one: http://housecall65.trendmicro.com/

Motherboard: ASUS M2R32-MVP
Processor : AMD AM2 X2 5600
Memory : 4- 1 GB DDR2 800 MHZ ram
Video : ATI X1800 Crossfire edition 512 MB
OS : Vista Ultimate 64
HDD : 2- 80GB 7200 RMD WD SATA drives
CD-Rom : Sony DVD R/RW +-

Ok, this is what should be a pretty good system. Problem is, it takes almost 2 hours to install OS.
This is unusual in itself, as it didn't take half that long to install on a system half what this one is.
Finally got it loaded, but when I goto enter password, the screen goes black. It shows the funny green default vista desktop, then the mouse cursor, then they both fade away, screen flickers and then nothing.

It is almost like it is trying to change to a resolution the monitor won't support. I say this, because the mouse cursor is really small, before it goes black. The Bios is flashed to most current stable ASUS Bios for this board.

OK, so I format the drive and install XP Pro 64 bit that I also have. Installs no problem. Some trouble finding audio drivers for it, but thats just 64 bit thing I think. But the video has no issues in XP 64.

A little back story, the motherboard I had was RMA'd because the 5600 processor wouldn't boot. I had replaced the 5200 with the 5600, but processor wouldn't boot. So, I RMA'd the whole thing, proc, mb, and memory back to BASS Computers in Houston. Thats where I get all my parts, software, etc. Anyway, after about 3 days, they tell me the timing is off on the mb, or some such. Anyway, so ... Read more

A:Problems with Vista

I have the same problem. I think that the problem is in the mainboard.
My configuration is:
ASUS M2R32-MVP
AMD AM2 X2 6000
ASUS EAH2600XT D4 HTDI 256M
4x1GB 800Mhz Kingston
500GB Maxtor SATA
Everything is works but too slowly. I wait about 5-6 minutes may be 10, before I can do something. Then I can open explorer or something else and also wait 5-10minutes to begin.
I don't install any drivers because it is too nervous for me. I can't understand why it is so slowly.
