Last night my computer froze so I hit the restart button, and now everything is really large and I can't get it back to normal. It looks kind of like the old '98 safety mode used to. I've tried changing the display properties but it doesn't work. Any advice??

Hello 3030223

Yes, it sounds like you are stuck in Safe Mode

Try these
1. Press F8 just before windows loads and you should have the option to load regularly or in safe mode. Just load regularly.

Or
2. Start/Run and type in
msconfig
OK

Click on Boot.ini Tab, and see if there is a check mark next to Safe Boot, if so uncheck it

Hello,

I have a user at work who is running Windows 2000 Pro SP4 off a Windows 2003 Server. When she opens web pages in IE, her font is very large and some pages do not display correctly due to the size of the font. I have changed her text size to smallest and it is still very large. I tried configuring her Accessibility options to Ignore font sizes specified on web pages to no avail. Anything else I can try? Her IE is up to date (6.0).

I believe that this is the result of a recent Windows update.

A font seems to have suddenly grown very large in some applications. An example is shown in the attached screengrab. It is mainly in page tabs but also in some search boxes and also in some application update dialog boxes.

This is the output from TSG Sysinfo
Code:

Hello!

I am running Windows 7 and just recently my computer began having issues with font sizes in certain programs. The large font only applies to windows that look like this and use this font - http://i.imgur.com/xuHlA.jpg. Note that the text runs out of the boundaries of the field, cutting off letters.

This happened after reinstalling an old game, Baldur's Gate 2 if it matters. In an attempt to fix the issue I uninstalled the game only to find the the font issue persisted. It appears to be only this one font that is having the issue.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I know, doesn't that problem drive you crazy? This has happened to me on various websites, and I finally discovered, after much frustration, that what you have to do is to temporarily, change your DPI setting to a lower resolution. Then, the message box will contain all the text/images, and you can make your changes. (To change DPI, right-click on your Desktop, select Personalize, click on "Adjust font size" and make the change. Reboot.) Once you make your changes, you can go back and reset your DPI settings to the way you had them before.

If that doesn't help, here are a lot of additional ways to change your font size:

1. If you use IE8, at the lower right hand corner of every IE web page, there’s a Zoom control that lets you increase the size of every web page, and it stays at that Zoom setting for every page.

2. Open Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options, General, Accessibility, Select Ignore font styles specified on web pages, check boxes and click OK, then Apply, then OK.

3. Open Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options, Advanc... Read more

We recently purchased a 22" widescreen Samsung EX2220 LCD monitor. Unfortunately the icons and labels on thedesktop and the teston the toolbars, taskbars, drop down menus are too small. I've changed the setting several times (Control Panel -display-Appearance-"Font Size" and all the "advanced" settings.) By doing this the fonts and text gets larger. However, every time we re-boot, all the settings go back to the way they were - small.
Does anyone know how to keep they large after a reboot?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I had a very strange thing happen today. I was trying to print a "Wet paint" sign in Word. So I made it big with 120 pt default font. But then when I clicked Print, the page came out blank. Hmmm? I tried again ... the same. I then saved it as PDF and tried printing from Acrobat. Still nothing...

Eventually I made a screenshot of the page (with Prnt Scrn key), saved it as jpeg, inserted it back into Word as a picture and only then I was able to print it.

Any idea what's going on?

PS. Just to note, I can print just fine any small (default) font size text.

PS2. Our printer is HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401dne

In IE, font is so large that a normal webpage no longer fits on the entire screen--you have to scroll left and right to view the whole page.

Try View--> Zoom --> select 100% (150% or more may already be selected)

A:Font too large in Internet Explorer

If it is actually the font size, have you tried:

View --> Text Size --> The choose the font size, like medium, smaller, smallest, etc. ?

Since you say you selected percents in your posts, you were actually zooming in and out rather than adusting the font size.

Hi all

I posted about this before and thought I had solved it, as for some reason it stopped for a short period but I have one recipient from my address book that ends up with a huge font when the email gets to his in box on his computer, but in my Sent folder it's normal size.

I have deleted Office 2003 and reinstalled it, I am using Outlook 2003, and XP Pro as my Operating system, with all service packs and updates (my Windows 7 drive is packed away so don't know if it happens on that computer.)

He is using
X.P. Home Edition Version 2002 Service pack 3 and updates
Microsoft Office 2003
Microsoft Outlook Express 6 2004

I got him to make sure he had all updates, walked him through it as he had not done any updates since he brought it from the computer shop (as I found out) but updating did not do any good on his end, although I don't think Outlook Express is supported anymore.

Other email from other people are normal font, and my email in the sent folder is normal when I see it in the sent folder and no one else in my address book gets mail from me with this huge font.

I am the only email he gets where its big font and I mean big I put the cursor over the letters (he clicks reply and sends it back to show me) and its size is 120, I don't have an option for that size font, the biggest size option I have for font is 72, so I don't know where that comes from.

One thing I do know is that one time I sent him an email with the font size of 8 to see... Read more

A:Recipient of email gets very large font

Do not use Outlook Express but know that with Thunderbird and some forums if you have the right setting if I copy something from the web and paste it I can have it show up the same.
Thunderbird has 3 paste options.
1. Paste
2. Paste Without Formatting
3. Paste As Quotation

I can have a hard time sometimes to get the normal default font to show up even if I pick Paste or just the font and font size is not normal.
I then have to use StripMail to strip out any coding that you do not see (Even if you do not see the other person you sent to may see) and then I copy and paste from StripMail.
http://www.stripmail.net/

So you can try StripMail just to see if it helps.
Also your should have option to sent email as...
1. html
2. html and plain text
3. plain text
So sending only pain text and then see what happens is another thing to try.

I am running Excel97 (SR-1) on a Windows95 PC over a Netware5 network. When some spreadsheets are opened, the font display size is unreadably large (about 72 point) although it is still described as being the default 10 point. This applies to both the data in cells and the row and column headings.

If affected cells are selected and the font size changed slightly (eg from 10 point to 11 point) everything goes back to normal. However, the problem returns when the file is re-opened. This is happening on a number of PCs and none appear to have a virus (checked with latest version of Sophos).

I would be very grateful for any ideas!

I will shortly need to move a large number (20,000) very large (20-30Mb) image files and associated tiny xmp sidecar files from one hard drive to another.

MS file explorer will make a meal of this so any suggestions for alternatives please? I have several folders each containing many thousands of files as above so moving a folder en-bloc is an option rather than file by file?

Simply drag and drop the folder(s).

Might want to do a copy first, verify that everything did indeed get copied, and then delete the originals.

Brand new ASUS laptop, running brand-new Windows 8. Totally default.

The font is huge. It's so big that my yahoo calendar doesn't show Saturday, I can't tell if it's the ASUS hardware/software, the Windows 8 OS, the screen resolution.

To resolve the issue, I've spent a LOT of time trying to fix it. I went to the Win8 personalization screen to discover that I could only make the font as small as 100%, and I fussed around with all the type choices MS allows. Nothing works. I upgraded to 8.1, but it never completed, at least according to your sysinfo. Not that I care, unless it would fix this issue.

I understand that the various apps control their own font sizes, but this setting is generally global. Yahoo/World of Solitaire/SFGate/Google. Your site is fine, except for the heads--ditto for Chase.

Looking over your old threads, ASUS had the opposite problem in 2010--the font was tiny. No one solved that issue.

The sysinfo is below:

I know this will sound ridiculous, but because I have somewhat poor vision, I went to the "personalize" window on my laptop running Vista and raised the DPI (basically font size) from a larger size to a Custom even larger size. It seemed reasonable when I viewed the sample, but when I applied it, the icons and start menu fill the entire page---it was way too excessive and I wanted to undo it. So back I went to "personalize" and opened the same window to reduce the DPI, clicked on " regular" button, and moved down to "ok" it so it would apply. Because of the size of the window, the bottom is blocked by the task bar and I cannot reach "ok.' I have tried to move the screen up, but it still won't reveal the "ok," so when I "x" out of the window, it doesn't apply. Now I can't get rid of this awful humongous type size! I'm sure there must be another avenue to approach it or to undo what I've done, but I can't find the way because I'm new to Vista. Will someone please tell me how to undo this mess! I'm posting this from my desktop computer because it's so hard to work with the laptop with Vista, but anything you post to me, I can read here. Thanks.

I have been applying different visual styles to my machine, and I recently applied one that had a small font, which I didn't really like.. So I deleted that font from my system fonts, and then reapplied the theme (I really like the theme, except for the font used). However, now I can't view some dialogs, like the windows sounds dialog for example, as you can see in the attached screenshot below. I imagine that somewhere in the visual style, the size of the font is enlarged, so as the accomodate the supplied, smaller, font. I don't know how to change it back.. I've tried applying different visual styles, and even the default visual style (through the Personalize dialog).

Does anyone know how I can change the font back to the original size?

First post here on the SevenForums! I'm only saving the tough ones for you guys! Here's the problem:

My client's computer was infected with a virus obtained via Facebook. I removed this and multiple other infections (and I'm pretty thorough with my scanning). She gets it back, starts working on it, and apparently her devices and printers icons are blank. Not missing, like with a "blank page" icon, just... blank. Here's the kicker: it only happens with large and extra large icons. It also happens with normal folder icons. When I change it to medium or lower, they come back. I've tried rebuilding the icon cache database several times, tried sfc /scannow, tried chkdsk, tried uninstalling any recent updates, etc... There have been no hardware changes, the hard drive has been tested as good (no bad sectors), her dual monitors are at a sane resolution, and I'm confident that the viruses has been removed. Trust me -- I've tried all the obvious stuff I can think of. Thanks and Good luck!

Edit: Also, I did about 30 minutes of searching through previous threads. Couldn't find a thing, but I could have missed it...

I am having difficulty reading my incoming email. The font size is extremely large and a full page is not legible. I'm speaking about LARGE type appearing as a "Size 60 to 80." I'm using AOL v8.0 on a Windows XP Pentium 4 computer with lots of hard drive space, memory and an excellent video card. I've even changed over to PeoplePC Dial Up from AOL and the fonts in email received are extremely LARGE. My desktop fonts and icons appear to be normal. Every other program including MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint indicates normal font size and these fonts can be altered. When sending email to others using Outlook Express, AOL or PeoplePC, others receiving my email have no complaints about font size. What can I do to fix large fonts in my received email in Outlook Express v6, AOL or PeoplePC? I've attempted to adjust size of text through the "View-Text-Size Pull-Down Menu" in Outlook Express or Internet Explorer to no avail. This "LARGE FONT LETTERING" problem is something I've never-ever seen before. When entering a UserID or Password in the UserID or PW Field on a website entry page, the cursor appears large (a wide rectangle) rather than a vertical flashing line. I'm running at 1024X768 screen resolution at 32 bit color quality. I'm confused.

Ok let me start off saying I am REALLY disappointed in Linksys, whom apparently got bought out by BELKIN!?!?

Anyhow I DESPERATELY need a replacement for my old N600 Netgear.

She's just not cutting it anymore.

I purchased a Linksys AC1200+ and to be frank, its a worthless piece of ****!

I am SHOCKED!! Linksys used to be the MAIN brand of HIGHEND equipment.

Anyhow I have the router on top floor on West end of home and need coverage on whole top floor and directly downstairs under the router.

How can I accomplish this with a router?

I am looking at a ac1750 netgear...seemingly because my 7 YEAR old netgear n600 had the same reception as my brand new Linksys just bought.

I'd like to stay around 100$

I have NEVER used a TP-Link product before....are they any good?

I have ALWAYS used Netgear or Linksys. But left now with just Netgear. Unless y'all can give me some food options.

Is this even feasible for about 100$? I would think so if an N600 can almost get the job done

Please help

I want to print 'something'
Annoyingly, it will have a LARGE black area - or maybe a large area of something else - another colour

I print: I waste ink, lots of it - bad for the world, costly and expensive wasting that ink, if on an inkjet - also rubs off on you!!

Is there a printing program that examines large areas, if they are of a similar colour, substitutes it for a zigzag pattern of the same colour?

See below for a rough sketch of what I mean:

I did a quick search on google, couldn't find anything - but then again, I wasnt sure 'what' to search for!

Just installed Win7 64 Home Pro from XP two days ago.
The last remaining issue I need to solve is a drag and drop file transfer to my other home network computer (HNC).

So far I've been able to d&d files from the HNC via Acronis WD in it's explorer mode without any issues, some sized in the multi Gb range. I've been also able to d&d small files directly to the HNC successfully.

When I try to d&d a large file, specifically my NVIDIA drivers sized at 123Mb the Win7 computer freezes immediately. The cursor is stuck and the computer is absolutely locked, the only thing that works to recover it is the power off button.
When I come back I don't get any indication of anything going wrong and if I look on the HNC drive the file has been transferred successfully!

I haven't tried copying files to the HNC via Acronis WD yet so I don't know if it will be able to write to it.

The HNC computer has not caused any issues in the past with XP, it's running Ubuntu Linux.

As a suggestion, test what happens when you attempt the drag 'n' drop operation in [safe mode + net].

The most likely problem causes are a bad anti-virus filter driver, or a NIC driver which needs updating.

Hello,
I have several questions and I think they all probably have to do with virus or spy ware, so I thought I would start here. Operating system is Windows XP

1.When I start my computer it is taking about 2 1/2 to 3 minutes to get to the log on screen. Then, the System 32 folder opens up and is just open on the desktop. This has never happened before.

2.When I go to the Internet in IE I generally can't access items on the page. Example. If I open my bank website, it won't let me go to anything else on the page. It acts like it's doing something, takes forever and then goes back to the page I was on. I don't have the problem if I access the Internet through AOL.

3.When I access Google,a help page,my bank site, even your site, either in IE or AOL all of the print on the page is in a large font and if I print anything it is in this large font. Does my computer know I turned a year older? What gives with this?

Things I've done.
I've run my virus scan and supposedly it's up to date according to McAfee.
I've run my SpyBot and my AOL Spyware. Spybot found MyWebSearch and supposedly deleted it.
I uninstalled games that were expired,I've been running the Clean-up program
and finally last night I ran my defrag.
When I ran the defrag I delayed the screensaver by 90 minutes and it also changed my desktop even though I had not asked it to do that. Now it doesn't have the saved picture that I was using (the name is there, but it i... Read more

Hello Everyone. I hope someone can give me some suggestions. I have one PC Windows XP SP2 and a Mac G5 quad OSX 10.4.9 both connected wirelessly to the same Lynksys wireless router.

The PC has share folder active and in the mac I can get access to the PC shared Folder via Finder > Network > mynetwork > Share Docs.

I can place files in this folder in both computers and I can access them in both computers too. Now here is the problem. If while using the mac I access the PC shared docs and try to move a large file (60MB) into the Mac's desktop, the file beings to move but then the wireless connection AT THE PC resets as if I had disable the wireless connection and enabled it again ! The mac then stops moving the file and gives me this error:

----
The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "" could not be read or written.
----
This only happens with large files! The PC does not have the windows firewall on however Avast on-access scan is on. It seems something is happening that triggers the PC wireless card to reset itself when trying to move this large file between the computers.

This is driving me crazy. Any suggestions? Thanks. NLD.

A:Extra Large Icons in Vista - Can We Have it in XP?

Hi,

I also wanted larger icons. You can do it in XP ( I have Pro and Service Pack 3 but don't think that makes a difference..).

Go to Control Panel ( Ensure you are in Category View as opposed to Classic View in the Left Hand Pane) >Accessibility Options>Configure Windows to Work for your vision, hearing and mobility needs..

A Wizard will open for you to configure all sorts of things including Icon Size, text size, scroll bar size, cursor size, etc.

Hope this helps

Both my machines are vista 64 ultimate.
Both fully updated.
One is only a few days old.

The problem is transferring large files. the transfer hangs up not too long into the transfer. And even smaller files.

I believe the problem lies in the new vista machine. I cant send large files to the other vista machine, or my XP machine. But the other Vista machine file transfers work just fine.
Both Firewalls are off for what its worth.

DETAILED PROBLEM STATEMENT
I keep my personal data folder ("Cliff," ~42GB, many files and subfolders) in the Public Folder on my Desktop PC. In the past (2-3 months ago) I was able to copy this folder across the LAN to the Public folder on my Laptop for those times when I needed to travel with the Laptop.

Now, when I attempt to copy the 42MB folder FROM the Public Folder on my Desktop TO the Public folder on my Laptop, some files/folders get transferred, but the connection fails within 1-5 seconds of initiating the copy. Error 0x80070035 eventually shows up. And, the connection is pitifully slow, ranging from xxKBPS to no higher than 8MBPS.

SOLUTIONS ATTEMPTED
1) Administrative Services-Routing and Remote Access switched from a default of Disabled, to Automatic. Made no difference.
2) Network Magic from Purenetworks/Cisco installed. It helped a little in the sense that more files/folders were copied before the disconnect of the laptop from the LAN. Ultimately not helpful. Now uninstalled.
3) Net Config Server shows Idle Session Time of 15 minutes, the default value. Since my timeouts happen within 1-2 minutes, this would seem to be OK.
4) SpeedGuide TCP/IP Setting for Vista used on Desktop PC (SpeedGuide.net :: TCP Optimizer / Downloads). This appeared to enable me to copy a smaller version (31GB) of the Cliff folder yesterday. But today, cannot copy the remaining 11GB before LAN disconnect.
Thank you for all help!

Hi,

I'm trying to delete 1500+ hidden files (located in different directories) from my flash memory. But when I highlight them all and choose "delete", I get the "Preparing to delete" dialogue which says:
Time remaining: Calculating...
Items remaining: Discovered 0 items (0 bytes)...
Speed: Calculating ...Click to expand...

And it stays like this FOREVER until I cancel the operation. It will only work when I delete about 50 files at a time, which I'm not willing to do every time.

I've tried this both on my laptop and desktop with Windows vista business/home premium service pack 1, and it still didn't work.

Any idea how I can solve this issue?

UPDATE: It appears that the issue occurs only when I'm deleting files locating in different directories through the 'search' function. It's still an issue though, and I'd like to delete all files of a specific kind instead of doing it through each and every directory.

Your help is much appreciated

I've had my computer since early May, and one of the first things I noticed was that the OS was installed on the 32 GB SSD I had put in, instead of the 500GB HDD. I didn't think much of it at first, but now the drive is almost completely full, sitting between 50-300MB at any given time. This is preventing me from updating drivers, windows updates, etc.

My specs are:

Vista Home Premium 64 bit, SP1

6GB Ram

2.67ghz core i7 920 CPU

32GB RiDATA SSD

500GB HDD

I'm sure the 32GB just isn't enough for the OS to be on, but I have installed all my games/programs on the 500GB HDD.

Hello. I'm putting together a dvd that has some large .exe files. Some over 1Gb in size. Even saving these files to a computer with Vista ..opening them seems to have a timed delay.
It almost seems like vista is very slowly indexing it or scanning it. In the DVD-rom it just spins. It will go on 30- to almost an hour for one large file then poof.. it will open like it normally would in XP.
Since I tried this with different software on diff machines on DVDV and HD I've concluded it's Vista as XP opens right away. Sorry for the long story.
Anyone know any fix for this, or ever heard of it?

p.s. All legal software- calm down peeps.

A:Vista opening large .exe reallllly slow

Hi Stinehart

Is your Vista version 32bit or 64bit? Can I assume the executables are either 32-bit or 16-bit?

If you have the 64bit Vista, see if Wow64 is churning big chunks of processor time in Task Managers 'Processes' tab - during those times that the DVD seems a bit hung up.

The new Vista User permissions setup is also hostile to many older programs - especially if they send an opening window to the screen that waits for user input. Privilege tangles can keep the screen from appearing at all - so that the input period is left to time out.

Just to see -- what happens if you set the Compatibility of the large executable to "Windows XP"?

And -- you've tested the DVD response time with some smaller executables, & they ran fine?

Interesting puzzle you've got: I'm curious to find out how this will turn out.

Hi, I've installed Windows vista Ultimate edition on a packard bell PC for a friend.

I backed up all his files to DVDs to copy to vista, for some reason any file over about 800MB stops copying after around 3mins, it says cannot read from source file or disk.

His system has 1GB ram, only a small HD 80GB, and a celeron er 3Ghz.

The discs aren't scratched, and I've copied them onto my PC with vista just to check and they go on fine, I've removed his DVD drive and replaced with another and still the same error, I've tried doing it in safe mode same error, there is NO programs running on his computer, nothing is installed yet.

I can get the files onto his PC by using HJsplit, but would rather fix the problem.

Any ideas?

Hi,

I recently upgraded some components on my computer, including the motherboard & graphics card, and took the processor, hard drive & RAM from my old one. This includes my main HDD, another 750GB SATA HDD that I had working perfectly in the old machine, and a formerly external 750GB IDE HDD that also now works fine internally.

The problem is with the 750GB SATA HDD, which is alright when copying small files (though it can cause mp3 playback to skip a little), but anything over 1GB - DVD iso files, etc, causes Windows Vista to crash completely and force me to manually reboot.

Having tried both Windows 64 bit & 32 bit on my new machine, it happens on both, yet both of the other hard drives seem to be working fine with large files - so it doesn't appear to be a RAM problem.

The friend who put it all together suggested that it could have been caused by using the old SATA cable (as the one shipped with the motherboard had right-angled plugs, and wouldn't fit correctly). Does this make sense, and would fitting a new cable solve the problem?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give, and do let me know if there's any other information you need.

Hi everyone. I have looked all over the internet for a solution to this and I just cant seem to find anyone with the same issue so I figured I'd try here.

I just put together a new build. It is a follows.
GIGABYTE GA-MA78GM-S2H
GIGABYTE GN-WP01GS-E 802.11b/g wireless card
Western Digital SATA 640GB
4GB (2x2gb) RAM
Vista Ultimate x64 SP1
D-LINK DGL-4300 Router (firmware 1.9)

I installed the OS and loaded all the patches. All the drivers are showing as up to date when using the "update driver" option from the device manager and when I manually verify the driver dates.

I have three PCs... A = XP PC connected to my network wireless. B = XP PC connected to my PC via LAN cable. C = Vista x64 PC.

Whenever I try to copy a file greater than about 100 meg from the Vista x64 PC to either A or B using a wireless connection, Vista CRASHES. It crashes almost instantly and I never get any sort of progress indicator. It's so bad, the mouse freezes, and nothing responds. I have to reboot the PC to recover. If I plug in the WIRED connection, I can copy files of any size to either PC with no problems. As an added wrinkle, I can use the vista PC with the WIRELESS connection and pull large files FROM PC A or B with no problems. The only issue arises when I try to push a file from Vista to either XP pc using a wireless connection. The only thing I have not tried is creating a share on the VISTA PC and then push files there from the XP boxes. I guess I could try this, but I'm not... Read more

i got an oddball problem. i have googled and even searched this forum yet i cant come up with a solution. and microsofts site i think i need a degree in to find what i want.

so here goes.

i recently purchased a hp laptop with a vista sp 1 setup, with a 4965agn wireless adapter connected to a linksys wrvs4400n router.

now i get a n connection, the internet works fine, i set the vista box to my xp workgroup (all xp machines run sp3) i have unchcked the ipv6 and even turned the dual stack setting in the router not to assign ipv6 ips.

what happends is i can see the network randomly (list all the pc's on the workgroup) and i can browse 2 of the 3 pc on the lan.

but if i try to copy from 1 pc to another large files about 1 gig at a time, i get an error, and the lan drops. where the vista box will only show the vista pc and the router in networking. after a while the vista box will relist the pc on the lan.

i have set the network to private, network discovery is on, file sharing is on, printer sharing is on.

i have turned off both xp's and vista's firewall's and vista's uac both have no effect on this.

if any more info is needed let me know i can add to it, from reading posts nbtstats and ipconfig /all i'm going to add this in a few minutes as soon as i get the laptop booted up.

when this does occur tho, i never loose internet.

edit added vista's info.

Check whether the external drive is formatted NTFS or FAT32. If the drive is FAT32, then the maximum allowed size for files is 4GB. You'll either need to convert the drive to NTFS, or split the AVI file into smaller chunks that fit within the FAT32 4GB boundary.

You should forward the ports on the router to the IP Addresses of the machines, that you want to connect to. On Symantec PC Anywhere, it is ports 5631 and 32, on Windows remote desktop connection it is port 3389 that needs to be forwarded.

If you increase the timeout, you should be able to correct the problem
1. Open Windows Live Mail, go to Tools > Accounts...
2. Choose your email account and then click on "Properties"
3. Click on the "Advance" tab
4. Under 'Server Timeouts', drag the slider to change it to a more longer or maximum period of timeouts.

Probably caused by extremely large attachments, or internet slowing down. There are various sites to check the speed.

Hello gililu

If it will not boot into Safe Mode either I think you should check for a RAM problem

If you have more than one stick of RAM swap them over or take one out and try again with only stick #1. If it does not help or makes things worse swap the sticks and try again with only stick #2. Running with one stick at a time will identify if you have a bad stick. Try moving the RAM to a different slot as well.

OR
You can put either of these free programs on a floppy and test the RAM. Let them run for hours to do many passes if you can

Also did you mentioned your wirekless is not connecting?? If so try the below steps
To resolve this problem follow the steps below:

1. Click the Start menu, in Start Search, type "cmd" (without quotation
marks),
right-click on cmd.exe and click Run as
Administrator.
2. Run the following commands pressing Enter after each one.

netsh winsock reset catalog
netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

3. Restart the computer to apply the settings to the system.

I am running out of disk space but can't see the folder where I have the problem. It is in the users/name/appdata folder but with Vista 64 you can't see this folder. Unbelievable well done Microsoft!

Can anyone please help. This is the sort of thing that drives you to Google Apps

Nick

A:Windows Vista 64 bit home edition

lets start with the basics

right click my computer then select properties

bottom left select performance

then top left open disk cleanup

then click ok

in the resulting box click the more options tab

under system restore and shadow copies select cleanup then delete then ok

this will delete all but your last restore point so make sure your happy with that first

see if it gives yuo any extra disk space

NEXT

Vista stores files from service pack updates and routine updates so you can uninstall them at a later date , however these can sometimes take up gb's of space and can be deleted , but remember if you do delete them you cannot uninstall any service packs

this will tell yuo how to delete the old SP2 files

SP2 Disk Cleanup Tool
oh and if you use the windows search tool it'll find appdata for you though it really shouldnt be that big .... you probably cant find it because its hidden , if you goto folder options in control panel then VIEW you can select it under "hidden files and folders"

Background Info:

Am running Windows Vista Home Premium
Service Pack 2
System Type: 32 bit

Hardware:

Computer Model: HP a1700n
Processor: AMD thlon X2 250 Processor 3.00 GHz

Problem:

I am unable to boot. Previously, I was able to boot successfully. When I now try to boot, I encounter a screen which says the following:

"A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed
incorrectly or damage..."

File: \Windows\system32\winload.exe

Status: 0xc0000428

Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the file
What I have done to attempt to fix the probelm, as of this writing, is to install
a known good HD into my computer that I can boot from. I then ran the "Malware Bytes" program against the non-bootable drive to check for viruses. The scan came back clean indicating no viruses, etc.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated!

A:My Vista Home Edition PC Will Not Boot Please Help!

Malwarebytes does not check for viruses. Do you have an Anti-Virus program you can do a scan with?

We recommend Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast on this site. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl...s.aspx?id=5201 or http://www.avast.com/en-us/index both are free. ONLY USE ONE Anti-Virus program, having more than one will cause problems!
In conjunction with either of them use both of the following and run them at least once a week.
Malwarebytes
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php
Superantispyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/down...NTISPYWAREFREE

Make sure to update their definition files during the install process.
Make sure to uncheck and decline to install any extras, such as toolbars and homepages, they may offer.
Make sure to uncheck or decline to use the "Pro" or "Trial" version, if it's offered.
After they're installed and updated, restart the computer.
Run a quick scan with each one.
After each quick scan is finished, select and remove EVERYTHING that was found.

I have decided to replace my worn out advent laptop with a desktop computer. This past weekend I went to three large computer shops with a view to buy.

Apart from the large variety of prices and packages on offer I was confused with the sales pitch in 2 out of the three country wide Computer Superstores.

Most of the products had vista as the os and when I asked if the many programs I have bought over the years would work - their replies were rather vague and I returned home without buying anything.

I don't know if I can ask this question on this forum and I apologized if I wrong but I need advice on what to buy.

I do not use my laptop to watch dvd's, TV, burn CD's, music etc. I will use the new computer to process photographs, write reports, make club news sheets and the odd posters - all for pleasure. Being a pensioner price is an important consideration and I can only afford up to ?400

The one that caught my eye and was compatible to my price range was

Dell Intell Core 2 duo e4700 processor
Insparation 530/2583 Premium
2GB Memory
320 GB Hard drive
19" Monitor
?390

Can someone advice me about whither my XP programs should work in this computer? I also have two usb external hard drives for storage/backup, will they work?

Hope someone cad give me advice.

Many thanks.

A:Windows Xp Home Edition V Vista

When Vista first came out there was a big stir about the lack of applications that would be compatible with it. The list is growing, and some of the older applications can still be used. To see if the applications that you have will be compatible you may wish to read this article.Vista shouldn't have any problems reading files from the external hard drives, but once again, you will need to check and see if application on them are compatible. You can also just google to see if a certain application is compatible. For the use that you have described, that looks like a good computer. If you are going to be using a resource intensive application like Photoshop, you want to think about increasing you RAM.

Hello everyone, I am using a Vista Home Premium Edition x64. I have wireless internet on it from my grandmas router in her room. Here's the problem though...,
I am a real dedicated gamer. I play America's Army v2.4.0
so im real picky about lag. Sometimes I can just turn
my computer on, and load up America's Army.. It will run
very fine for hours and hours. Then again, I can turn on the
computer and load it up, and everything will be going real slow.
Even when I let everything have time to load. Maybe there is some kind of system performance tool I could use? Or maybe it's just my wireless connection. And if it was that, is there anything I could check to find out if it is really my connection?

You could (still under warranty?) take it back or you could open it up, check and reseat all the cards and cables and try again if you haven't already tried that. You might also provide a bit more info on what happens when you turn it on. Does it start and then fail? Any noises? Fans all working? Will it read any other discs? What model HP machine is it? Hello ksingh

Welcome to TSF

Your Sony Vaio has come with a preinstalled bundle package that has a
hidden recovery partition. In the event that you need to reinstall then you can do so by select
Start\All programs\vaio Recovery Center\Complete System Restore
Your PC will reinstall using the partition and it will be exactly like you purchased it.

Also sony have a great website that allows you to download preinstalled bundles so if you accidently wie your hard drive you can redownload the full content of your PC back to the way you bought it

You can find that web site here, it is perfectly legal and all software is suited for your particular model you enter

hello i just recently had a BSOD on both my computers, my laptop and my desktop... needless to say my laptop is now working fine after a delete i made (it seems odd that it worked but i deleted google chrome) both my BSOD's occured when i ws browsing on it and i had no idea why. But from the information i was able to get from my laptop it seems that it was a virus.

My laptop is working fine now. But my desktop seems to be shot, i ran a diagnostic on its hardware and that came out to be fine in every way the diagnostic ran (also ran the extended 30 mins part of it). Now when i meant my desktop was show i mean that i cannot access it normal screen nor safe mode. Is there a way of fixing this problem without having to do the system recovery options? or having to get a new OS on a disc running my computer on it and transferring the information onto a separate HD or USB, to only have to reformat my hard drive exc. exc.... i would love to know >.<

please and thank you XD

also i had just tried all the advanced boot options -
safe mode
safe mod with net
safe mode with prompt
enable boot logging
last known good config
debugging mode

all those except
disable automatic restart on system failure
disable driver signature enforcement
enable low-resolutions video

Welcome to TSF ;

First step ;

Disconnect PC from power, then remove the battery and/or use the mainboard jumper to clear.
Just don't forget on re-boot to enter BIOS setup and set time etc or it will have an effect on your antivirus and any other date dependant programs.
Hope this works for you.

Second steps:

I’d suggest you to unplug all external devices.

Try logging into Advanced startup options. The Advanced Boot Options screen lets you start Windows in advanced troubleshooting modes. You can access the menu by turning on your computer and pressing the F8 key before Windows starts.

Refer the link below for more details:

Advanced startup options (including safe mode)
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Advanced-startup-options-including-safe-mode#

Try to get the error message by using the option "Disable automatic restart on system failure" from advanced boot menu.

You could also restart your computer using the Last known Good Configuration and see if the issue can be fixed. It's a Windows startup option that uses the most recent system settings that worked correctly. Every time you turn your computer off and Windows shuts down successfully, important system settings are saved in the registry. If a problem occurs, you can restart your computer using those settings. For example, if a new driver for your video card is causing problems, or an incorrect registry setting is preventing Windows from starting correctly, you can restart you... Read more

hi. I have my new vista laptop and it is currently connected a network. I have installed the LLTD to my other computers running XP. I can't access all the shared folders on my XP computers from my Vista laptop but my XP computers can access my laptop resources. The network diagnose on my vista laptop states that there is a firewall blocking TCP 445. I've read several forums and guides over the Internet and none of it seems to be the solution.

Anyway, my laptop has Norton AV installed on it and I'm running Vista Home Premium.

A:File Sharing - Vista and XP Home edition

Hi arcanewielder

Quote:

Prior to generating a new Network Map in Windows Vista you must ensure that Print and File Sharing is excluded from Windows Firewall filtering.

I saw this in a TechNet article on networking Vista and XP PCs. If you are using just the Windows Firewall on any of the PCs, the settings are in the tutorial here --- http://technet2.microsoft.com/Window....mspx?mfr=true --- Basically, you add File and Printer Sharing to the Exceptions list.

The same procedure, I would imagine, would have to take place in the Norton firewall (if you've Norton Internet Security) - or whatever firewalls are inolved.

Best of luck

Yes, when you tried to install Debian, you formatted the partition to ext3 or ext4 which is not recognized by NT (Windows Vista). You need to use a partitioning software such as GParted to change the partiton to NTFS.

Hi and thank you for reading my post.

I am unable to run any .exe program installation files on my laptop for any software I download, particularly newer .exe files. However, if I run the .exe files from something like a flash drive or external USB device, it works properly. I have also been experiencing high CPU load on my laptop, sometimes 100%. The task manager shows high CPU for PSANHost.exe *32, racagent.exe, dwm.exe, or taskmgr.exe even when nothing is running on the laptop. There are also moments when I run Chrome where the shockwave flash plugin will use enormous amounts of memory and CPU just to open a simple page on Yahoo.

My operating system is Windows Vista 64 Home Edition on a brand new Acer Aspire laptop purchased in 2011 and just opened and used for the first time last week.

Please advise on what I can do to correct this issue. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Thank you in advance for your attention.

It seems I opened something I shouldn't have opened, and now I'm tormented by a bug named:

Virtumonde

Virtumonde seems to a self replicating booger. Spybot, and Adaware both pick it up and remove it, however it just keeps replicating, hijacking my browser, and freezing up my computer.

This is a Dell machine Ispiron 530. It is running Vista Home Edition, 4 sticks RAM...more than it can use...500gig hard drive, a 500gig scratch drive, and a Seagate 750 USB drive for backup.

The computer is 2 months old, and prior to last weekend, I had no problems with Viruses.

I scanned the entity in question with AVG free edition before opening...it declared it bug free....but I guess it wasn't after all.

When on the internet the little blue circle starts to flash, and a few moments later the browser is opening a new window for some trash site...get rich quick, porn, vacations, etc. Once I close the window its o.k. for a few minutes...then repeats.

Spyware programs on this machine are:

AVG free edition
Windows Defender
AVAST
Spybot
Ad-aware

Virtumonde comes up in every scan...4 to 10 instances. The last scan on Adaware revealed Virtumonde and three other Trojans:

Win 32. Trojan Dropper
Win 32. Trojan Proxy.Horst
Win 32. TrojanDropper.Small

There were 10 instances each of these guys

The machine seems to be riddled with Maleware...Help.

How is stuff working without it? I downloaded the SP 1 and burned the disk. After reading the notice that it may take several hours and multiple reboots to install the service pack I decided my system wasn't all that "broken" after all. I bought my PC in April 2007 and it took me a long time to optimize it so that the HD doesn't run on indexing search data I don't use and other stuff. I don't want to risk it for some nebulous benefit.
