Problem with Netgear VMDG480 Router and Vista Wireless Connection

Q: Problem with Netgear VMDG480 Router and Vista Wireless Connection

recently joined Virgin Media with the complete package. The router they gave me is a Netgear VMDG480 Router with wireless connection. However, one of the laptops will not connect to the Internet. It fails to pick up the DNS even though the laptop can see the router and makes a connection. However, on making a connection it does not pick up a DNS.

This is odd because when connected wired it works a treat.

Here is the result from running ipconfig on the wireless adapter:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix: [Blank]
Nothing for DCHP
IPv4 Address: 192.168.0.6
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
Nothing for DCHP Server
Nothing for DNS Servers

This particular laptop runs Vista, and the other laptop that does work wirelessly uses XP Professional.

Does anyone have the answer to this problem?

Thanks

I have a Virgin Media Netgear VMDG480 broadband modem/router. Whilst the Ethernet performance is strong the Wifi signal strength is weak and only provides signal to half of my house. I've seen various comments on other forums that this is a common problem for this device. To overcome this I propose to install a Wireless Access Point at the far end of the house and connect this to the VMDG480 via powerlink. (I already use this powerlink connect to a PC at the far side of the house and this works really well.)

My concerns are:

1. Will the VMDG480 recognise the Wireless Access Point? I've seen some comments that suggest that this may be a problem.
2. Is there any specific type of Wireless Access Point that I should use to ensure compatibility with the VMDG480?
3. Is the use of a Wireless Access Point across powerlink a sensible approach?
4. An alternative approach is to use a Wireless Range Extender. Is this a better approach? If yes should I use a Netgear device to ensure compatibility?

Thanks, Paul

A:Uing Wireless Access Point with Netgear VMDG480

1. "recognize"? I don't understand. How does the router "recognize" a computer or powerlink or other device?

2. Cannot think of any way a Wireless Access Point would be incompatible with a router.

3. Yes, since you know the powerlink works for you.

4. Not a better approach, unless there is no way to connect a WAP.

(Sorry, I just edited this because I realized the title said Wireless Router, it's actually a gateway. Can't fix it.)

I have a Netgear CGD24G Wireless Gateway and a Gateway MA8 laptop with after-market Windows 7 (Vista got a virus, went ahead and upgraded.)

Now, when I download 100 MB files on my Xbox 360 (Which is wired to the modem) it will be downloaded in a couple minutes, or less. The other computers in my house (There are plenty, and even more that come and go.) get a blazing internet connection, and most of them are wireless. Now this computer, which had an extremely quick connection as well all of a sudden dropped off, while the rest of the computers remain fast.

I've gone to Speedtest.net before and after this occurred and my speed before was around 12 mb/s, and one time around 4 AM was even upward of 25 mb/s, all of these tests were performed multiple times on different server locations.

I JUST did the speedtest, and it came back with .4 mb/s, and the UL speed was 2.0. I honestly can't remember what I averaged with it prior to the problem, but it was definitely higher as well.

This started happening a little less than a week ago, and I've downloaded/changed nothing major with the computer, and have mainly used it for light browsing, and an occasional download.

Also, this is mainly just a hobby fix. I have a long enough cable to wire the computer straight to the gateway, so I really don't want to buy new hardware or anything of t... Read more

I have a NetGear FWG114P Router with a desktop PC, an IOMEGA backup drive, and printer all pugged directly into the router. I also have a Dell laptop with XP SP2 and a NetGear wireless G card. The router drops the connection to the laptop very frequently. The connection to the desktop and the printer have no issues and the connection going from the laptop to the router is fine. The only way to restore the connection is to re-boot the laptop or the router. I have tried everything to eliminate the problem as it has lasted for several years. Upgrading the firmware on the router, buying a new 5.8Ghz phone, and installing a more powerful antenna to boost the signal, have not made a difference. The signal strength is consistantly strong, so I know that is not the issue. Recently I tried something that did work but I do not understand why. I keep a browser session open to maintain a connection from the laptop to the Router - specifically when I boot up the laptop I login to the router and keep it logged in the entire time I am on the laptop. That way my connection to the router does not drop. I would much rather find the real cause of this problem. Any ideas?

A:NETGEAR Router drops wireless connection

It seems that no one ever responded to your post. However, I can vouch for exactly your experience. I bought my FWG114P after my previous FM114P failed suddenly after about 3 years. I wasn't happy about it failing but it was reliable as long as it ran. But the FWG114P is anything but reliable. I'm on my first replacement now and it drops the wireless signal randomly and for random periods of time just like the first one did (it does seem to come back of its own accord most of the time, without a computer or router reboot). I have given up trying to get Netgear to admit that there is some fundamental problem with the wireless function of this device, basically because I don't want to hear them tell me one more time that it must be interference (obviously interference that just happened to start when I bought the first FWG114P!). Even pointing them to various forums where people are complaining about exactly this problem doesn't seem to make any difference! I haven't bothered getting a third machine because I know it will have the same problem. Yes, it's disappointing and frustrating.

Greetings, My Laptop will not connect to my Netgear Router anymore today. It was working earlier (that's what mum said), and then it wouldn't connect anymore. All I get is the 6 bars that is grey with a yellow sun over it and under the Network Connections it say's its "Attempting to authenticate". I don't know what happen however last night the power went out for a couple of seconds so I don't know if that played a part or not but you can't rule out anything yet. Oh and I did a hard reset on the router and modem. I even went as far as to try advice I found on google but nothing worked. I tried deleting/uninstalling the wireless card under device manager and waited for it to restart but that didn't work. I even tried a system restore and that too didn't work. I also did the whole ipconfig /release, /renew, /flushdns and nothing worked. Before some people ask this question I will answer it: I did connect ethernet cable and it did work just fine. So I'm thinking its more of the wireless card that is messing up or something like that because I can connect using the Ethernet port. I am at a lost of what I can do now. Thanks for the help to all those who reply.

A:Wireless connection not connecting to Router (Netgear)

I did another test in which I used a USB Wireless adapter (54Mbps), and It didn't want to connect. So I'm now pretty sure its a Router problem but I don't see how that could be because I did a hard reset and I did backup recovery before I did a reset so I can restore it.

Here is an image from Xiirus Wi-Fi Inspector. Please note I did change the Channel to 8 after I noticed that someone else was also on that channel.

Hi,

I bought a NETGEAR RangeMax Wireless Router WPN824 but I don't get internet connect from it. I have a comast modem it's a RCA by THOMSON witch I can connect to the internet with a ethernet cable.

A:NETGEAR RangeMax Wireless Router WPN824 No Internet Connection.

The following procedure should get you a connection with any broadband modem that is configured to use DHCP for the router connection, such as cable modems, and many DSL modems. If you require PPPoE configuration for the DSL modem, that will have to be configured to match the ISP requirements.

Note that the wireless encryption and channel selection will have to be done after the basic wired connection is established, the first step is to get wired connections working.

Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on.
Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
Connect the modem to the router's WAN/Internet port.
Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN/Network ports.
Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect light.
Turn on the router, wait for two minutes.
Boot the computer.

When the computer is completely booted, let's see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous command output!

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

I have a Netgear superhub vmdg480 supplied by Virgin on the rear above the rj45 sockets there are two leds apparently the amber denotes 100mbps and the green 1000 mbps I used to get good speeds 31Mbs from a 30Mb connection. In Dec this dropped to average 10Mb I complained to Virgin they cleared noise off th line and when they connect ther laptop into my router they get good speed and a green led. When I connect I get poor speed and a Amber light I changed the lan card on there suggestion to a Realtek 8139 10-100 Mbps with the same results. Is this because I need a 1000Mbps card I thought I had changed it for the same type of card.

According to what you said you will need a gigabit card if you want to see a green LED. But a 100 Mbps ethernet card will give you up to about (actual) 70 Mbps, so that is not what is throttling your internet access.

Make sure you have the latest driver for the card.

A defective cable could cause this, so check that out.

AVG is a prime suspect in my mind (it may be corrupted). Uninstall it and run the Remover. You can reinstall it after testing.

Sometimes an adapter has problems negotiating a speed with a given modem/router/switch. In Device Manager right click on the ethernet - Properties - Advanced tab - for the 'Speed & Duplex' property try '100 Mbps full duplex.'

Lastly, try the TCP Optimizer.

Hey, maybe you folks can help me with this.

My girlfriend's computer keeps losing the connection to our Netgear WPN824 wireless router ("RangeMax," so called). The comp will disconnect from the network and be unable to reconnect for a short while. By contrast, my laptop running XP has never had any connectivity issues whatsoever. I'm not so familiar with Vista so I can't help her with her problem-- if, in fact, it's the OS that's the problem at all.

A:Netgear wireless router Vista compatibility issues?

In that ipconfig /all the wireless did not have an IP assigned by the router's Dhcp server. But, it does successfully connect at least sometimes?

Many wireless problems with Vista are driver issues, so the first thing to do is to make sure she has the latest wireless driver from the PC manufacturer's web site.

Just moved house and have taken on Virgins 10mb BB service.

All works brilliant on my PC running Vista 64bit when I connect direct from the modem however , I want to use the Wireless Netgear router to hardwire a games room next door.

I have used the wireless installation disc and get through as far as the point where my pc finds the router. When booted up all lights appear as they should so I know its not a dud.

All connections are as they should be but my PC cannot find the Netgear Router.

I have tried numerous reboots and have even spoken to Virgin Tech Support!!!! who said it might be the port settings.

Any clues anyone?

I have a Wireless Router (Netgear WGR614 V7) and I am facing problems with it while connecting to the Cable Modem.

My Setup: I have Broadband Internet from Cox Communications. I use a Motorola SB5120 Cable Modem. I then connect my Netgear Router to the Modem to get wireless internet.

Problem: When I connect the Netgear Router to the Modem, the router works for 6-8 hours without any interruption. But thereafter it starts dropping the Internet signal very frequently (every 3-5 minutes). The wireless connection is dropped as well as if there are any wired connections using the router. If I power off the router for 2-3 hours it is ready to work for another 6-8 hours. If I go through the normal power cycle suggested for routers (power off the modem, power off the router, wait for 30 seconds, power on the modem, when all the 4 LEDs on modem are Green power on the router) the router drops signal every 3-5 minutes.

I have tried hardwiring (using an ethernet cable) my laptop directly to the cable Modem and I get very good quality internet signal (Approx 15000 KBps Download and 500 KPBS Upload Speed). I don't experience any drops in the internet signal. So the problem should not be related to my cable company or the cable modem.

Looking for any help if I can get on what can be done with my router!

Wireless Router is a year-and-a-half to two years old (Netgear Rangemax WPN824)

I have Cox Cable's premium broadband service. When connected directly to the modem, my download throughput ranges from 11 mbits to 24 mbits; upload is around 3.8mbits

when the router is connected, the most I'm getting is 6-8 mbits down, and about 1.0 up.

I've reinstalled and reconfigured to the best of my knowledge, and still get the same results.

Should I get a new wireless router? Any suggestions?

I have a network with three computers:

1) XP Laptop connected via ethernet cable to the Netgear WPNT834 RangeMax 240 wireless Router - it connects to the internet, works fine. Even when I use a Microsoft wireless card (model MN-520).

2) XP compaq laptop with Linksys wireless-G Notebook Adapter with RangeBooster (WPC54GR) - it connects to the internet, works fine.

3) the problem one:
XP Computer with Linksys PCI Adapter (model WMP54G) wireless card. It can see and connect to the WEP enabled network (SSID available). I can confirm this by seeing the 'connection' on the "view wireless networks" list.

HOWEVER:
I can NOT connect to the internet with either IE or Mozilla's Firefox. The connection is intermitent at best.

I tried the Microsoft utilities to create a broadband connection, etc. and it does not work.

What to I need to do to have this computer (#3) finally connect to the internet with its wireless adapter via the Netgear RangeMax router?

Many thanks for your help. Please, try to provide details as I am not too technical.

Thank you!

A:Connection problem NETGEAR ROUTER and Linksys PCI card

First determine if the problem PC is really communicating with the router.

To open a Command Window: Start - Run – cmd (command in 98SE) - OK

To determine a computer's IP address and router's IP address: open a Command Window and type
ipconfig /all

The "Gateway" is the router's IP address.

Now for some troubleshooting:

1. On the PC open a Command window and type
ping IProuter (where IProuter is the IP address of the router)

Do you get Replies, or do you get packets lost?

If you got all packets lost, your PC and router are not communicating. Very likely an encryption problem. Try w/o encryption.

2. If you got replies, try
ping 216.109.112.135

3. If you got replies, you have internet access, and then try\
ping www.yahoo.com

If you get replies again, DNS is working, and you probably have a Winsock problem.

Hello

I have a NTL / Virgin Media Cable Modem, Model No: 351000, and i have recently borrowed a Netgear WGR614 version6 from a friend.

I am having problems with connecting everything and i would like to be guided in the right direction.

My Modem is connected to my PC via a USB cable, and also to my phone line.

I have tried the following setup: Connect a new ethernet cable into the spare port at the back of my NTl cable modem and plug that into the LAN Port at the back of the Netgear wireless router, then, connect another ethernet cable from the "internet" port at the back of the wireless router to the PC.

This setup has resulted in the wireless router's "internet" light being active, but the "wireless" light not being on, so, no wireless access point has been created.

I have tried everything possible with a D-Link DL524 wireless router before, to no avail and i would really like this to work as i really need Wi-Fi in my home.

Also, once, when i connected everything with the netgear one, i found the access point, but then my internet didn't work, and i still couldn't (and never have been able to) access the setup at 192.168.1.1 (i have also tried 192.168.0.1). However, i cannot remember the configuration i used.

Please Help.

Thank you for your time

A while back my company purchased a new router (NG FVS124G) as ours was getting dated (old sonicwall, but not relevant). We received it and used all the old settings from the existing router to get it working, but no luck. We could not get it to connect to the internet, our web server would not work, and our VPN does not work either. After much tinkering, by my manager still nothing. Finally in desparation he brought in his router from home (LS WRT54G) so at least we could get up and running again. Again he loaded the old settings, and bam everything works Internet, Web Server, and VPN.

I have just recently inherited this problem, in a desperate attempt to get a more secure network going. So, this all leads to my question how is it possible the with the exact same settings one router works (WRT54G) and the other (FVS124G) does not?

We are using a static IP address.
Yes, i double, triple, quadruple checked that it all matches.
All ports that are need are allowed (as far as i know).

Any ideas?

A:Linksys WRT54G and Netgear FVS124G Router connection problem

From what I am seeing, you need to set the allowed ports and protocols
in the firewall setup in order to get traffic through the WAN.
The lynksys doesn't have this extensive protection.
Pobably just has virtual server and dmz.
You may want to check the manual on setting up WAN traffic
through the firewall.

I've tried different things but it still not working, went to start, then found run, typed cmd, then ipconfig/all, found the IP address, gateway, submask and dsn but when I'm inserting these numbers the message is coming up that there may be a problem with your domain name DNS server config.

Please advice what to do!

I set this system up for someone a while back and it works fine.

Only issue I have is that every time he tries to access Google using any of 2 wireless laptops the Google page does not complete its loading sequence and effectively hangs. If you cable up the laptops rather than use wireless Google loads up fine.

This happens irrespective of whether the Netgear system is running OPEN or with security enabled (currently running WPA-PSK encryption).

Anyone seen this before and can offer a solution please?

I have a home network with an XP 64, and Linux SUSE 11.1 64 bit, hard wired to a Netgear WGR614v7 router connected to Clearwire wireless modem. I've connected to the network with an old laptop with Cisco wifi card. I had minimum problems connecting with the early wifi.

I just bought a new laptop with Vista, soon to be Win 7 I hope. When I try and connect to the network with wifi, I get limited access. I'm running WEP, authentication - automatic, 128 bit, and have typed the same "passphrase" more than once on both the router and in Vista. I'm not familar with WEP, and Vista. The problem seems to be in Vista authenticating the passphrase. If I could clear the network setup in Vista that would be a good start.

Hello Dear Ones!

My brother was using VMDG480 (Netgear-Virgin Media) in London & while returning he has brought it along to use in India.
Am already using a DIGISOL modem+router in office with BSNL broad band connection. Now i want to use that VMDG480 at home with the same BSNL connection because both office & home are in the same building but want to have independent control.

Is it possible that two modems can run on single telephone line? If yes, please describe the procedure to configure.

This is my first post in Tech Support Guy Forum, hope my question will be answered at earliest.

Thanking you.

I have been trying to find a way to connect, forward the signal, recieve the signal from my Verizon Fios wireless router up to my WGT624 V3 Netgear router.

Is there a way that I can modify my wirless port on my Netgear to recieve a signal wirelessly from my Verizon Wireless router?

My Neighbor did it once with another wireless router, but he can not remember how he did it. I am thinking it had something to do with the Firmware.

If anyone can help me with this that would be great.

I'm basically trying to push the wireless signal from my Verizon router in my basement, up to my wireless Netgear router which is recieving the signal on the main level so that I can plug my wired (non wireless) laptop into the ethernet port which is receiving wireless signal from the Verizon router in the basement in order to gain access to the internet.

Can this be done with the equipment listed above and or some additional firmware and configuration?

Thank you for all your assistance on this in advance.

So here is my case:

SETUP:

Verizon's Westell 6100:
Modem/Router, provides 1 incoming address (provided by VZ) and provides 1 internal address (192.168.1.1).

Netgear Wireless Router WGT624 v4:
Wireless Router, accepts 192.168.1.1 and provides 10.0.0.X wired and wirelessly.

Problem:
Although Verizon's Router indicates that it is on Bridge mode, the damn thing isnt. I thought the main concept of bridging was to become practically invisible and automatically reroute all traffic to the next device, which is what I want.
I want to ultimately use the Netgear device to set all my rules and settings, instead, I have to do it on both.
For instance, Xbox Live is not working 100% properly. I can only play video games without being able to join specific games, or perform any in-game video/voice chat.

I have tried NATing the device. No luck.
I have also tried setting the Netgear device as a Wireless Base Station. Either way, I just would like to have my network ignore 1 device, and have the second one invisibly reroute all the access.

Is that possible? Could you please help?

Thanks to all!

A:Netgear Wireless Router and Westell Modem + Router = Routed Bridge failure

Well, since the "modem" is supplying a private IP address, it's obvious that it's not in bridge mode, that can only happen with a NAT layer, aka a router.

Try this solution to configure it for bridge mode, direct from Verizon: http://www22.verizon.com/residentialhelp/highspeed/networking/setup/questionsthree/123756.htm

The easiest way is to run the CD that should have come with the Router, if you havent got it then you will have to configure it manually.

Full instructions can be found on the netgear website here.

I have Qwest/CenturyLink DSL, and recently replaced the Actiontec M1000 modem which crapped out after 5 years of service. Replaced it with a Netgear DM111PSP v2 router/modem. Now I cannot get either of my two routers, the Linksys WRT54G or WRT160N V2 to broadcast wireless internet. I've spent the most time on the WRT160N. It will broadcast a wireless signal, but devices that attempt to connect to the internet time out while "obtaining IP address". BTW, I just happen to have two wireless routers on hand, I only need one to work.

I can get internet through the hard wire connection. I have the Netgear modem hooked up to the "internet" port of the WRT160N router, and the computer is connected to one of the four ethernet ports on the back of the router. I can access both router and modem setup pages using this setup. The Netgear modem is set up for DHCP server, PPPoA encapsulation, and gets its DNS address dynamically from the ISP. The WRT160N is also set up for automatic DHCP configuration. These are the settings given by running each set up wizard, and this has set me up for some DHCP conflicts.

I think that setting up a dual modem/router in transparent bridging mode (PPPoE) in theory turns off the DHCP, allowing the WRT160N to handle DHCP, but I have no luck even getting my hard-wired internet connection to work if I switch from PPPoA to PPPoE mode. Even if I cut the WRT160N out of the loop and connect the computer direct to the DM111PSP. No internet,... Read more

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together
From a John Will Post

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

After a series of computer and network failures, mostly due to electrical storms and electrical contractors, I decided to upgrade my old Netgear router to a new Netgear Wireless-N router.

I have used Network Magic to manage my networked computers and when I decided to upgrade NM, the new version didn't support my old router. So, it seemed like an all over upgrade/update was in order.

What should have been a simple process-- turn everything off, disconnect the old router, replace it with the new router, and go through the set up process (cable modem on, then router on, etc.) has turned into a mystery.

I used the Netgear startup wizard, followed step by step (more than once) and each time I got to the last part of the process, it stalled saying "No Router Found."
It was only after several unsuccessful attempts, that I decided to open my control panel and check things out. Network Connections showed my status as "connected," so I opened my browser and found that I am able to connect to the internet.

What I have not been able to do is to set up my network, network security, etc. I tried to initiate Network Magic for set up, with the same results-- "no router found."

Anyone know what I have going on here? Am I only connected through the LAN connection, perhaps?

Hi,

About 4 months ago, I bought a Toshiba P100-160 laptop with Vista operating system. I have two desktops connected to the BT Home Hub router using ethernet, and connected the laptop wirelessly in another room. I had no problem at all with my wireless connection and download speeds etc.

One month ago approx, I started having problems with the connection, which occasionally turned itself off. This quickly worsened, and when I came back from a couple of weeks away, I was unable to connect at all (or just occasional connections for a few minutes).

I tried calling BT who provide my router and broadband service; they investigated and sent me a replacement Home Hub, however this hasn't changed the problem at all. If I try and connect wirelessly, I usually have the error message:

"Windows cannot connect to BTHomeHub"
then
"Wireless Association failed because Windows did not receive any response from the wireless router or access point."

The above message is very common, even when my laptop is right next to the new router.

Sometimes the connection will last for up to an hour, but when it does, it is extremely slow. The router is not always visible when I hit 'connect to' then 'wireless' - neighbours' networks are visible instead. I am also able to connect occasionally to a neighbour's unsecured network, however the signal strength is usually pretty low. I haven't tried connecting something else to my home hub as I do... I have just installed a BelkinF5D7634-4A-H wireless router and cannot get a wireless connection with WPA2/PSK security. I could get this with my old router (Netgear). The laptop will connect wirelessly to the router, but not the internet, although the internet light is lit on the router. My neighbours can connect (when I entered the password) so this seems to be some sort of communication problem between my laptop and the internet or the router. I can get a wireless connection with WEP but do not want to use this as it is less secure. Currently I have disabled wireless and am using a wired connection. I have Vista Home operating system and, having searched the internet, this seems to be a common problem. However, I have not found a solution I can understand - I have very limited experience in this area. Can anyone help talk me through how to set this up in very simple terms?

Thank you!

Hello friends!

I'm having a bit of trouble tonight trying to connect to my wireless router. Here are the specifics-

Router: Linksys Wireless B
OS: Windows 7
Wireless Adapter: Netgear Wireless G

I used the Netgear installation disc and ran the setup wizard. I was able to connect easily initially, and firefox opened to my google homepage. I tried a simple google search and it went offline. The taskbar icon shows "connections available" and when opened and prompted to connect to the found network, it was "unable to connect". I opened the Netgear set up wizard and it just keeps scanning the channels and never connects. Any suggestions??

Thanks!

Hi Everybody

I am having some problems with my new D-Link wireless router. I have asked D-Link for help but they don't seem to have a clue at all so I wonder if someone out there can help me out here.

I have a wireless network at home, the network is connected by 4 computers, a HP laser print and a broadband modem. I used to have a D-Link DI-624 wireless router. I had no problem to send any files to the HP printer to print from any of the 4 computers. But until recently I decided to upgrade the router to a 'N' range compatible one, so I bought a brand new D-Link DIR-615. I had no problem to set up the network with the new router, and all computers, printer and modem were connecting to the new router successfully. But, I cannot send anything to the printer from any of the computers.

When I logged on to the D-Link DIR-615 settings, I can see my HP printer connected to the network with an IP address 192.168.0.102, but when I tried to add a new printer on my laptop (running Vista Business), the laptop cannot locate the printer on the network at all. I rang D-Link to report the issue, I was told it could be to do with the firewall settings, so I switched off the firewall and I still could not be able to connect to the printer. I asked D-Link what I should do, then they said it might be something to do with the software (eh??), and if that is the case, they do not support any software related issues, so basically they are not very helpful at all.

Please try the following suggestions, there's no need to move on to the next task if it works:

Disable any Firewall or Security Software for now.

Remove all wireless network stored in your computer, then re-add your own SSID. If the network is secured, make sure to type in the correct network key.

Hi guys,

I bought a brand-new Netgear wireless modem router recently. I encountered some problems when I used it.

1. When I plug in the power of modem router, I notice the light of wireless is off. I think it should be light. Is it something wrong with the router?

2. My laptop obtains the IP & DSN automatically (which means DHCP), but I can't log in 192.168.0.1 which is default address. OK, after that, I change my laptop ip address to static ip address, say 192.168.0.10, then I can log in 192.168.0.1.

Dose anybody know the problems? Any help would welcome.

Hello,

Using a Webstar Cable Modem, & Netgear Wireless Router on Windows XP.

Connecting an Ethernet cable to the router worked ok, had access to the Internet with no problems.

Trying to run wireless was the problem. No wireless networks found.

The Tick light was off on the router, i power cycled the equipment, i reset the router, i applied the wireless settings manually, but still no wireless networks were found. It is a laptop so i checked to see if it had a wireless switch, which it did and is turned on, but still no networks could be found & this "Tick" light was still off. The router didn't seem to be able to broadcast a signal?

Is the Tick light important, i'm not to familiar with the Netgears light sequence, must this be on for a signal to be broadcast, or does it come on when there is an active wireless connection?

Any other ideas of how i would get this online?

Thank you,

C.Skyco

I am trying to set up WPA security on my new Dell Inspiron Laptop,

When I go to "Help and Support" for instructions it says:

"The Set Up a Network wizard will guide you through setting up a security key.

Click to open Set Up a Network."

My problem is when I "Click to open Set up a Network" it only shows my neighbor's router [A Linksys WRT110]. My Netgear WGR614v6 does not show up as an option to connect to.

How may I resolve this issue?

Thank you

Hi,

Is your router currently broadcasting a wireless signal? If it is, is "Broadcast SSID" or similar turned ON?

Hey guys, wondering if anyone can help me with an issue in having. I have a Netgear wireless router (can't remember model, CGD or CGN something I think) and I'd like to set up a wired connection, the PC is right next to the router/modem and I'd enjoy having the slightly better download speeds with wired however, just plugging in an ethernet cable does nothing (surprise surprise). When I first tried I got Error 651, by fixing up the drivers with a Vista one I got past that but now I'm getting Error 797, I'm stuck here, I have no idea what to do. Any help?

A:Can I use a Netgear router for a wired connection?

Try to access the routers setting page over the wireless, usually for netgear its 192.168.1.1 or 10.0.0.1, and log in using your user and password given to you. Some routers (especically Netgear) will disable ethernet ports unless you specify otherwise for whatever reason. Ususally there is a setting in the router control panel to enable them. Wish you luck

I have a Paradyne DSL modem connected to a Netgear WGR614 wireless router. This set-up has been working great for over a year.

A couple of weeks ago, my DSL (or so I thought) quit working while I was using it. No big deal, I just let it be, thinking it would be up the next day. Next day, same thing, so I started the normal troubleshooting. Everything looked like it should, so I connected directly to the DSL modem and everything worked fine. I decided my Netgear had bit the dust, even though everything looked good. I tried another router and had the same results, so I purchased a new Netgear because I wasn't sure of the configurations for the second router. Same thing.

In order to connect the modem directly to the computer, I have to enter the IP, Gateway and DNS numbers in my PC, so I know my numbers are still valid. Any ideas as to why my DSL will no longer work through a router? I can access the routers internal configuration from my pc, so I know the connection between those two are good. When I set the Netgear back to factory defaults, it was able to detect what type of connection I have, so I assume the connection between the modem and the Netgear is good. I tried disabling my firewall temporarily. I am at a loss as to what to try next. I know several people who have the exact set-up at their homes and are working fine.

The troubleshooting was performed on my wired Windows XP Home desktop; however, I also tried wireless with my Windows XP Professional laptop.

I recently had to reset my wireless router (NetGear WNR2000v4), and when everything came back up it had no wireless connectivity. The light on the router goes on, but i can't even see the network as in range on my phone. The router login page has a toggle for wireless radio on/off, it's set to off but when i check it back on and apply it reverts back to off, and the LED on the router also turns off.

I've also got notifications of a firmware upgrade available, but when i try to download/apply it i get a "firmware incorrect" error.

After going through all the usual steps (shutdown of computer, phone, power cycle and factory restore on the router), i found a boatload of threads out there from folks having the exact same symptoms, and eventually a supposed fix for the issue here: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/27207

After downloading the fix tool and following the instructions, nothing seemed to happen. Where the fix says there should be files transferred in tfptd32, there was nothing there, and nothing changed about the way it's all acting. So now i guess i'm in need of a fix for the fix? I'm not altogether certain what this utility is or does to know how i might be able to make it work if it doesn't want to.

At this point i'm not sure if it's just broken and i need a new one, or if there's anything i can do to fix the fix, or if there's another solution out there. Any ideas?

Hi all

I just bought and installed a Linksys Wireless Broadband router. It's directly hooked up to a desktop w/ Windows XP and SBC Yahoo DSL. My laptop is the only other PC currently communicating w/ the router. Everything seems to install fine, and my laptop recognizes the network instantly, but after about 1 day the internet connection is lost on the desktop. If I unplug the network cable from the router and plug it back into it's original location on the desktop the internet comes back instantly and I have to reinstall the router again for my laptop to pick up the network. This has happened multiple times, each time consistently after about 1 day. Is there something simple I can do to fix this that maybe I missed when installing the router?

First time on the forums here, if you need more info than I have given let me know.

Alright, I purchased a DL-524 wireless router a long time ago (4, maybe 5 years) and haven't had any problems to speak of. My house has 5 computers, all of which are usually hooked up to the internet, below is a list with their operating systems.

1 Windows 7 - desktop
2 Windows Vista - laptops
1 Windows XP - laptop (mine)
1 Windows XP - desktop (also mine, only occasionally connected to the internet)

For some reason, about two days ago the router ceased to function properly (literally, I woke up and it didn't work, no warnings, no nothing). All the lights are blinking normally, but the Ethernet cable that is connected to the modem doesn't seem to be recognized. I borrowed a friend's switch (how I'm online right now) but since Advanced Cable Communications only allows for one computer to be online at a time, that cannot be a long term fix. I followed the instructions here http://forums.techguy.org/networking/853105-solved-d-link-di-524-a.html to the letter (specifically the 6th post), but when it pinged the IP address and any external websites it wouldn't recognize them. I have included the text from the command prompt/dos instructions below.

Incidentally, "Walter II in the Den" is my family's desktop Windows 7. Yes, it's weird. No, I didn't name it.

Hi all.

I work as a software developer and have had a lot of experience with wireless networking, but this problem has me stumped...

I have an old wireless router (unsecured at the moment) that I have connected to a modem, provided by Virgin media. When I use a cable to directly connect to the router, all seems fine, but when I attempt to connect wirelessly I am almost immediately presented with "Windows was unable to connect to [router name]".

Other people in my house (on both XP and Vista) can connect to the router without any problems, implying that it is a setting within Windows 7. HOWEVER, I am able to connect to another (unsecured) wireless router. I guess this can only mean that there is a setting on the router that is preventing me from connecting...any ideas?

Thanks.

Nick

Hi,
I have a Siemens Gigaset SE587 WLAN dsl.
I'm trying to connect my Wii to the internet.
I've checked 'disable' for auto channel settings
and changed the wireless channel to '1'.

Now I think I may have to add the Wii's MAC address

Do I add this in the 'Local Network' Setup tab?

If so, it's asking for:
Operation IP Address - [What would I input here?]
Mac Address
Lease Time(Sec) - [What would I input here????]

Or, maybe I'm wrong with that possible solution and there's something else I could do to try and connect my Wii??

Thankyou in advance,
Eoin.

A:Wii internet connection problem through wireless router

log into the router and remove the secruity and any mac filtering and then see if the Wii will connect - then once you know its all working you add those back on if you want them

you will need to add the MAC address into the router for all devices that connect

the router would normally be set to DHCP - so the IP Address is supplied to devices from the router - but if you have this disabled in the router then you need to add a fixed IP on the Wii setup page

Mac Address - would be entered in the router
Lease time is usually set in the router for all DHCP connections

Called Netgear....boy were they helpful NOT! They said that hardware wise the Wireless Router is good to go....so then they said get on their website and pay up the wazoo for an email that will give me step by step instructions to figure out why I can't get my friends 3 computers (1 tower and 2 laptops) to connect to the internet and send/receive email.

SO - what up???? I have re-set and rebooted until everything is spick and span! There is nothing left to do but bow down to you super duper smarty pants that always get me set straight - your awsome at this!

I have had this router for some time - worked fine with Xp64 - now I've upgraded to Vista 64 Home, it will occasionally lock up.

By that I mean that I can sometimes still see my local network, but I lose internect connectivity. I seems to be at random. But the impression I get is that it is something on the wireless network that is causing it as it seems to be worse if I connect my works laptop to the internet via a wireless VPN connection.

I also have a WB NAS drive connected (Soon to be ditched due to problems with it corrupting files and being extremely slow to extract data) and a Wii (Wireless).

Or can any recommend a ADSL wireless router that works well with Vista? (I have to run the PC and NAS drive with static IP addresses due to the time it takes for the network to connect if I use DHCP)

Thanks

Hi

I've got a netgear router which was enabling me to use my laptop on the internet perfectly - no problems. I had noticed that my wireless network connection was listed as non secured and this was a problem I was going to rectify. However having managed to log on to the internet and get a wireless connection fine this morning, and hour later I have returned to find that it is now listing my wireless connection as secured and asking for a network key for us to gain access.

I have never inputted a network key and therefore don't have the foggiest what to put in.

I'm thinking maybe someone has managed to use our wireless connection from outside of our home, then changed the network key? Is this possible? What can I do?

Any help gratefuly recevied.

logonto the router

I tried plugging in the phone ethernet cable and the adapter cable to computer and router. Then I went to use internet and there was an error message saying something like cannot display page. I typed in website http://www.routerlogin.com and I kept getting error message. How can I reset the previous user name and password if I can't get internet connection? Hello. I just bought a used Netgear wireless router. The product code is MR814v1. I plugged the power into it then an ethernet cable from the cable modem to the router. The power button is on and the internet light stays on for 5 seconds then blinks and turns off then the wireless light comes on. I am not sure what is wrong with it. I have tried different combinations of plugging in the wires but to no avail. I really need to get this working for my girlfriend. First I was at my house using it and the internet worked for about 10 minutes then just stopped. I have no clue what the deal is. I need some help.

A:Netgear Wireless Router Not Working

First step, reset the router to factory defaults. With power on the router, hold the reset button down for 15 seconds or more. See how it acts after that.

Of course, buying used equipment is sometimes a crapshoot, you may have simply purchased a defective router.

But if the laptop goes into standby, connection is lost & no way can I get it back.Whenever I try using the utility of the laptop, it thinks the router is asking for WEP security which won't work because it's set for wpa-psk. I say no way, but I mean normally. If I plug in the ethernet cable, access the router, check the wireless settings (no changes made) & log out, it connects wirelessly & I can remove the ethernet cable no problem. It's like the router has a setting somewhere that needs to be set. Anyone with ideas or have a similar problem with this model router?

I have a user who installed a NetGear USB wireless adapter in a WinME desktop system to connect to a DLINK Wireless router.

The adapter is showing signal strength of 68% so I'm assuming it sees the router.

However, there is no connectivity to the net or to the other computers in the network. There is a WinXP desktop system cable connected to the router as well as 2 laptops which are both wireless connected.

I have ensured that WEP is disabled on the ME desktop as well as the firewall software. The adapter config gives two options for network connections, default and first available. I have tried both with no luck.

I've been told to make sure SSID Broadcast is enabled in the router.

Any other ideas?

Hello everyone, I registered just to ask this question. Now, maybe I'm stupid, but I can't seem to figure out what the problem is with my new Router. The router itself is a NetGear WNR1000. My router is hooked up to both my Modem and my computer, as well as a chord to my Xbox that I rarely use. I use its Wireless abilities for my wife's laptop. Now, I put in the CD and went through all that set-up and such and it seemed to be okay, but my internet has been bad ever since I hooked this thing up.

My Ethernet and Internet lights on the Modem are near-constantly blinking, but the other two are fine. Sometimes my internet works okay, if very slowly, but sometimes a page won't show up and says "Webpage not Available" but if I refresh a couple of times it always comes up eventually. The laptop has this same type of half-internet. When I play WoW sometimes it lags horribly and sometimes it works perfectly fine. This has been going on for a few weeks since I put the thing in and I'm tired of it, so I came to you guys to see if y'all could figure it out.

When I go to CMD and type IPCONFIG/ALL it claims my IP Address is 10.0.0.2 but What Is My Ip the website claims its actually something else.

In the bottom right hand corner the wireless card appears as being connected. It tells me the signal strength is excellent and the mbps. But I my internet connection will not work. A:Linksys Router and Netgear Wireless NIC

first, make sure that you have a valid IP, an invalid IP would be 169.254.x.x. secondly, right click on the connection icon and "view available wireless networks" make sure you are connecting to your router. XP will sometimes automatically make a connection to the first unsecured wireless network it finds, make sure you are connecting to the right SSID. Next, do you have WEP enabled, if so, do you have the key set up on your computer.

A:Solved: Netgear router suddenly allows only one connection

Make sure the modem is connected to the router's WAN port.

Reset the router to factory default settings (and reconfigure it if the problem disappears).

Hey Gang,
I have a Netgear WNR1000v3 router. I have two computers connected with a wired connection and a couple of different devices that I connect with using the wireless connection. (Phone, Laptop, Ipad). The wired connections work fine but the wireless connection will only connect to the internet for a very short time (seconds) and then drop off. If I wait long enough I will pick it back up again. But again, for only a very short time. I have tried all the reboot procedures without any success. If I reboot the laptop, Ipad, etc., that seems to get me a connection, again for a very short time. I've checked the lights on the router and everything there says its OK. It seems to have to difference how far I am from the router. I've put the computer right next to it without success. Is the router going bad? It's only about 4 months old. Because I don't use the wireless feature often, I can't tell you if it ever worked or not. It seems to me like I was able to keep a connection when I first hooked it up but I'm not sure.

A:Netgear Router Dropping Internet Connection

do you have any other devices near the router that could interfier with connection? anything else giving off a wireless signal, such as a cordless phone etc?
sometimes things like this can interfere with wireless signals coming from routers.

Other than that, Might be an idea to try and change the channel or your wireless signal coming from the router.

Hi guys,
I'm hoping someone can help with my ongoing wireless problems I'm having with Orange.
The laptops in my flat are wirelessly connected to a Netgear N150 Wireless router and the connection is forever going from little to nothing. I've tried resetting everything, getting Orange to replace the router (a new Netgear N150) but still nothing. I've tried changing channels in the past but never seems to last. I can't work out if another wireless router in another flat is chomping into our connection

Here's my ipconfig/all results:

Hey everyone,

This forum has always been helpful to me by answering the little stuff. Let's test it's limits

One of my clients has a Windstream Router that gives off the IP Address 192.168.3.X. So the default gateway for our network always has to be 192.168.3.1. All hardwired computers need to have a 192.168.3.X IP. I would like this to happen with all wireless devices. I know this is possible as I have gotten close to that goal, but not perfect. This is a mystery that I need solved by smarter networking minds. I have tried Windstream support (somewhat helpful) and Netgear Support (not helpful). Here's the story:

About six months ago my clients wanted to set up Wireless. So I put in the two netgear routers with IP Addresses of 192.168.1.X one downstairs and one upstairs and all was good. Until they started to use the wireless devices more. They needed scanning, access to shared folders on our the private network and remote services...

So for the past few months I have managed to get these netgear boxes working on the network. I did this by going into the settings and setting their default gateway to 192.168.3.1 and that they would give off the IP addresses instead of the Windstream box. This appeared to work fine for a few months. Until we gave them more bandwidth so that they could use their Remote Services faster. Now there are intermittent connectivity issues, Outlook disconnects, Remote Desktop constantly kicks users out, and internet is slow (not sure if t... Read more

A:Connection Issues with Netgear Router that have Private IP

If I understand what you're trying to do, set the wireless routers up on the main 191.168.3.x network, and run ethernet to the main router from their LAN, not WAN, ports. You may have to use a crossover type wire. It's the main router that will do all the DHCP work. The secondary routers are functioning as a wireless switch.
