I do like to think of myself as at least somewhat competent with computers however I have run into an issue with trying to format a friends laptop. The usual <f11> at startup does not seem to be running the Dell factory restore tool. Also <ctrl> + <f8> won't bring up the boot menu.

The interesting thing with this laptop is that the <f#> keys are all Fn keys (that is the <f#> part is blue and the media controls seem to be the primary function of the keys). Any ideas on how to get through to be able to restore this laptop to factory 'as-new'?

It is probably something stupidly simple but so far the great powers of google have failed me.

Hopefully that makes the issue clear enough.

A:Re-format a DELL Studio Laptop

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

The first thing you need to check is whether your friend's laptop still has the Dell recovery partition on the hard drive.

If it hasn't then you need to use Dell's recovery discs or a Windows DVD.

Purchased a Dell XPS 13. Sweet machine, but as always it comes loaded with unnecessary bloat and apps I neither want nor need. With only a 256GB ssd, I figure it's a good idea to wipe the drive and clean install 10. Not being too tech savvy I wanted to throw out a few questions to the brighter minds among us. . .
Is it as simple as downloading Windows 10 onto a thumb drive, plug it in and follow the prompts, wiping the disk and partitions?
Does 10 auto install the necessary drivers, or do I need to do so manually from Dell's site?
Any recommendations on apps/services that can be safely uninstalled or at least turned off to increase performance? Any "must have" tweaks that I should install?
Overall, any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

A:New Dell Laptop, Time to Format and Reinstall?

I'm thinking of reformatting my HP laptop hard drive that currently has XP and installing a new standard version of Vista. If I do this am I likely to lose functionality of some of the special one touch buttons on the laptop. I don't use them 99% of the time but will the computer stilll function properly? I want to do this because I can't stand the thought of reloading the HP version of XP with all the junk it comes with. I would like to just start over. Does anyone have some advice on doing this? Am I looking for real troube?

running a Windows Vista network. no problems with 3 wirless computers running Windows XP. and no problems printing remotely using the desktop running Vista. new Dell laptop is running Vista and trying to add a printer, it doesn't see any of the printers. At first it didn't show the wired desktop on the laptop under the network. On the wired desktop under network, It showed the laptop as a music sign and not a computer icon. We deleted the workgroup name and retyped it and changed it to a private computer. have disabled both firewalls. The laptop is running Trend Internet Securioty. It then found the wired desktop on the laptop. But it still doesn't see any of the printers that are connected to the wired desktop.Tried to find the printers by typing in \\192.168.100 under the run command. It said it couldn't recognize the wired DNS address 192.168.100. That is the ipconfig address from cmd and then ipconfig from the wired Dell laptop.

What do we need to do to have the laptop see the printers?

Hello all, I just acronis'ed (partition resized) Vista x64 from the whole hard drive 451 to 150gb and to make space for windows 7 installation on the free 300gb. During the resize the laptop went to sleep so I had to reboot --- but after rebooting, I could not create a partition because it reported as no space available. Somehow ? I got out of that and managed to resize again, this time successfully (so I thought) to 150gb. Installed Win7 successfully on the 300gb partition but now unable to boot back to Vista although the bootup gives both options win7 and vista. Ran EBCD and set up windows 7 boot with vista as second choice. Still no luck - Vista will not come up - even in safe mode - it just sits there with a black screen and the arrow cursor.

Tried the original install disk and did repair several times from the CD on vista partition but still did not start - I then went to command and ran bootrec.exe /fixmbr etc... it said successful but still no luck in vista boot. The 150gb partition seems to be intact there are program files and program files (x86) folders with all the installed stuff on it. Anyway I moved all what could be moved into the win7 partition in preparation for the worst!! (a fresh vista re-install). Is this my only solution now ??

Hi, I just purchased a Dell yesterday and started using it today.

It came with the basic McAfee 30 day trial software but no other anti-virus or spyware software.

Anyway, looks like I have a spyware/malware on my computer.

I constantly get IE popping up with a "Best AntiSpyware Solution" window promoting me to scan my computer. The link is something like http://antispywareexpert.com/...

Can someone please help? I have attached the hijackthis below.

Thanks.

Hi, I have just registered.
I am interested in computers having started with a TRS 16K level 2 in 1981, followed by a BBC model B, followed by a PackardBell 16MHz PC. I then bought an Acorn RISC computer upgraded to StrongArm and only changed bacvk to PCs because I needed email facilities.

Here are details of my present PC

I have a Dell Dimension 5000 P4 with HT technology (3.00 GHz, 800fsb, 1MB cache) with 1GB Ram

Software
The operating system is XP SP3
I use Avast, ZoneAlarm, CCleaner, Spyware Doctor.
I use Woks and Worksuite, Picasa3, Micrografx\Picture Publisher,
Serif PagePlus11, Serif PhotoPlus10, Audacity,
I am very happy with the setup

My wife has my old Desktop which had W98 and which has been upgraded to XP SP3 (from a new XP upgrade). This is an Intel Pentium3 732MHz with 512 MB Ram and serves her purpose for emails and word processing.

Two weeks ago I ordered a Dell Inspiron Laptop with Dual2Core processor, 2GB RAM and 250MBHD. It came with Vista just a week ago. I successfully connected the laptop to my wireless modem and two other desktops. I deleted McAfee and installed Avast and ZoneAlarm which caused problems. Your issue (likely software) is most likely Virus\Malware related, have a look here:
UPDATED 8-step Viruses/Spyware/Malware Preliminary Removal Instructions

But because the Ram was only recently upgraded, there is a high possibility of that:
Please run Memtest on your Ram

I sense a Vista owner who has discovered they do not like Vista after all though
Oh and I came from similar days, but never owned a computer until about 4sim cards of 1meg ram (might have been 2sims cards, can't remember) But involved in computers before that as well

Hi there!

I wasn't sure if I should post this in the Vista or XP thread, but since I'm currently running on Vista, I thought this more appropriate.. sorry if I'm wrong :\

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop, which came installed with Vista Premium 32. I've had it coming up to 2 years now, and it's in need of a reformat I think.

Whilst reformmating, I also want to downgrade to XP... I'm find it hard to justify the strain Vista has on my humble system, since it's not powerful enough to run anything using DirectX10 and the like.. I think a nice, more streamlined XP would turn my system into a faster leaner one... (imho).

I've backed up everything, except for my outlook emails, (I need to get onto that) but am I forgetting anything?

Vista is embedded on this laptop, but I don't think that's going to be a problem if I reformat and do a clean XP install.

It's also been a very long time since I've done this. Is it better to reformat, then do the reinstall? I can't even remember how to do the first, thought I know it's fairly simple... F1 springs to mind..

Is there a particular version of XP i should be aiming for?

My system spec:
Dell Inspiron 1501
AMD Turion 64 x2 1.6 GHz
Memory: 1GB (I was sure it was more than this!)
System type: 32-bit OS

Any guidance would be appreciated

Thankies

Now I want Vista back, but no "Operating System" CD came with my laptop. I only have a partition that's called "RECOVERY" that came with my laptop, but I have no idea how to use that. Even the laptop's manual doesn't tell me how to do it.

Any ideas?

deleted, or unistalled? There's a difference, I assume you know. "File missing" tells me you deleted stuff but didn't uninstall it properly.                                  BC Adviser was kind enough to help me with viruses in my old Dell Windows Vista Laptop in another topic.

I was trying to change my sign in or log on password. It became somewhat difficult when I needed to get into the Administrator level account first. When I started to see this information my computer said some files were contaminated. That had me stop. I went into start and then wrote, Computer Management, and opened it. Microsoft site stated to type in cmd in the Start search box and then press Enter, but I was unable to get past that. I don't believe I did any damage because the operating system seems fine.

HI.

I have a brand new Dell laptop with Windows Vista. I have an HP printer that worked fine with my old computer. I have downloaded the HP driver for my printer from the official HP website (I've deleted and repeated this process several times). Prints go to the queue but don't print. The scan function works, so the connection is fine.
HP techs tried to troubleshoot but ultimately gave up and blamed Dell.
Dell blamed HP before even trying to help, and recommends that I call their tech support line and pay them to troubleshoot.
Microsoft is currently trying to troubleshoot but has been unable to solve the problem.

This is driving me crazy!!!

You mean you log in as admin all the time? not very secure. they make admin password access limited for just this reason. Do you know about the built in (hidden) admin account?

Our problem is if it isn't your account (how do we know if it is) by telling you how to circumvent it we would be doing something illegal.

We can certainly tell you how to create a non admin account, easily. do you have any idea what the password was?

I have an LCD screen that I connect with a VGA cable to use as a second monitor. I had a lot of trouble setting it up a long time ago, but somehow it magically setup correctly one day when I rebooted and has worked beautifully for a few months.

I recently changed some settings on my laptop (just disabled/re-enabled some services) and now when I hookup the LCD screen, it makes it my primary monitor with a resolution that it can't handle such that my laptop screen is blank because it is only outputting a signal to the LCD screen. Because the signal is in the wrong format I can't see anything on the LCD screen (it just says 'format not supported') so I can't change my personalization to the correct setting.

I'm doing this through the nVidia control panel and personalization in windows, but the real problem is my computer only detects the tv at start up, or coming out of sleep-mode with the 'force tv detection option' so I can only change settings that affect the tv if the computer has detected it. However, like I said before, once the computer detects it, it defaults to a resolution that doesn't allow me to do anything...it's quite the catch-22.

If anyone has any suggestions on what I could try I'd greatly appreciate it...

Hi, I have an older Dell vostro 1510 laptop running Vista 32bit , I started using it recently after my son took my newer one to Uni, anyway, it is freezing every time, not long after the desktop appears.
This does not happen in safe mode.
Thinking it was a software or driver issue I performed a factory settings reset but was surprised to find the issue still exists.
It removed all the software and files that I had put on the laptop and I had to install the graphics card drivers (long story but I changed the motherboard for one that had the intel graphics card instead of the faulty nvidia one) so I assume that it had overwritten/re-installed the operating system? Or could I have to perform a clean install of that to fix the issue? I tried re-seating the 2 ram modules and booting with one then the other on its own but didn't work. Any thoughts or ideas on this would be great, thanks.

Hi

My sister, knowing I've successfully sought help on Techguy before, has gone on holiday and left me with her laptop, which is refusing to boot up. Here is what I've witnessed so far:

Boot up fails and presents (very quickly) a BSOD with the message:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The initial session process or system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000000 (0xc0000034 0x001005c4).
The system has been shut down.

(I only managed to capture this message by rebooting the laptop, pressing F8 and disabling automatic restart).

Next boot: run Startup Repair, which returns with the message:

Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

View problem details gives me the following:

Problem signature
Problem Event Name: StartupRepairV2
Problem Signature 01: ManualRepair

Where do I go from here ??? The terms ManualRepair and CorruptVolume would seem like something I should worry about.

Here's hoping for another Techguy success...

I have a laptop with windows vista and started to have problems yesterday afternoon. I left on while I left for a couple of hours and came back and was never the same.

The first thing I noticed was the computer said I was hooked up to wifi but icon on bottom tool bar had and "X" through it and everytime I click on IE icon would take forever to come up and then when it did all the farther it got was "IE not repsonding". The "tools" function would not work. I reset IE from drop down window but did not help anything.

Then another thing it is doing is it wont power down when I command it to. It will do the hibernate funtion but wont turn all the way off unless i manually hit the power button. Then when I turn back on says was shut down improperly.

Also the "safe mode" does not seem to be functioning either.

I ran the internet protection program (which also took forever to come up) and says there are no viruses, etc, but sure is acting like it!!!

What is the deal?

A:Dell Laptop Windows Vista won't power down, etc.

Sometimes shut-down problems are related to improperly installed updates, but this doesn't sound likely from your description.

When I turn I turn it back on, the same thing happens........it continues the same thing, 1 of 3, 2 of 3 and 3 of 3.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks Bruce

Hello,

I'm on a Dell 1537 Laptop which is less than 6 months old, and it's running on Vista. It has the standard sound and video card that came with it.

A week ago, I attached the computer to my new Television which is an insignia with the video cord. As soon as the video cord was removed the blue screen of death appeared with an OxOOOOOO7E error message.

Since then, the error and crash dump have become fairly reliable whenever anything inserted into the computer (USB, video, HDMI) except for the power cord is removed from it.

I have removed all recent files and programs as well as examined my drivers because that was a suggested thing to do on other forum posts.

The same crash dump has recently reared its ugly head without anything being unplugged from the computer, and this usually happens when on the internet and with multiple programs running.

I have attempted a full scan using both McAfee and MalwareByte, but they usually don't go all the way through because the computer crash dumps during the process. I did manage a quick scan on MalwareByte with no problems and it did not solve anything.

I hope you can help! Thanks a lot,
Elliott

Follow the instructions here: http://www.techerator.com/2009/08/fi...ndows-updates/

You most likely downloaded Microsoft's faulty update. It's been happening everywhere. Have to give some credit to Microsoft's beta testing team.

Good luck.

Hello,

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop that came with Windows Vista Premium. At random, unexpected times when I am on it, the whole computer locks up and the screen freezes. The mouse pointer doesn't move. The keyboard locks up. Like I said, it happens unexpectedly and I have no idea why. But here are some things I noticed when this has happened and hopefully you can analyze what I should do to fix this problem. First off, I notice, and I'm not sure the technical name for it, that the outlined cylinder icon that is in line with the power icon and battery icon in the bottom right hand corner of the physical, monitor boarder, does not flash green in spurts like it normally does (which I'm guessing the reason it does is because programs are running in the background). In does not highlight at all, although the power icon is still outlined green. So it is like the lights are on but nobody's home. The second thing I notice is that many times after this happens, the internal fan kicks on to high speed. This I feel is because the internal components are overheated. Is this true? If so, how do I fix this problem or the overall problem of this lockup, if you have any idea what might be it's cause. Thanks very much.

If you can install Windows 7 but not Vista it seems to point to your install disk.

If you can install Windows 7 why bother with Vista.

Was using Facebook and clicked on a video that a friend posted.

The video didn't come up, it said the Flash player needed to be updated. Clicked on it.

Then the computer froze. Then it wouldn't let me do anything, no files would open or close.

Shut the computer off and turned it on. Then two new icons had appeared on the desktop. "Run Virus Scan" & "online spyware test"

Tried to start Norton Internet Security. The registation had lapsed, and it said had to renew. Couldn't log on to renew.

But a window in Norton came up to say Trojan Virus and a Severe infection.

Restarted computer in safe mode.

Running Norton Internet Security Full System Scan. It is not finding anything.

A:Running Vista on a Dell Laptop, Trojan Virus?

I think I am dealing with the same or similar Trojan infection now.

I have run:

Norton Internet Utilities.
MBAM
Avast!
superantispyware
ATF Cleaner

and the problem still seems to be present.

Argggh.

I thought it was working, when I could open explorer in the infected machine, but when I went to type in a web address, the keyboard typed gibberish.

I have been at this for several hours, and could use some moral support or technical know how please.

You can download windows vista legally from HERE ( originally from Digital River ) and then follow the instruction to create a bootable DVD. You need your own license key to activate it.

Hi; new to the forum so apologies in advance for being clueless.

Massive thanks in advance to anyone who can try to help with my problem!

I've had this laptop just over a year and had no problems until recently, when I restored the machine to factory settings on the advice of a friend who works in IT (I'd had some problems, possibly AVG-related and couldn't boot up at all). No other changes have been made to hardware or software - in other words it's the same setup that's worked fine up until now.

Since restoring the settings the laptop boots to Windows but freezes up completely 2-3 minutes later and I have to power off and try again; I've tried changing power usage and sleep / hibernate settings but the outcome is the same again and again and the amount of time before it freezes isn't sufficient for me to download updates or drives in case that is the problem. Once it freezes I get no response from CTRL+ALT+Delete but if I C/A/D before the freeze I get a black screen (only the pointer visible) for 30 seconds, then an error message box saying "Logon process has failed to create the security options dialog - Failure - security options".

A:Dell Inspiron Vista laptop freezing 2 min after startup

Update

Left the laptop on overnight to boot windows normally, since I'd noticed on occasion one or two functions did seem to be working, just extremely slowly. Now I have BSOD w/ messages and can't eneter Safe Mode (the computer restarts and offers me Startup Repair and Boot Normally, both of which lead to the BSOD). The blue screen comes with an error message, sometimes 'This application has failed to start because user32.dll was not found' and the rest of the time 'This application has failed to start because basesrv was not found' .

A few days ago I ran a boot test (diagnostics) at startup and got the following:

[Memory - March U Test]
ErrorCode 0123
Error Code 2000-0123 Memory integrity test failed

Error Code 3600:0749
AC_Adapter_Invalid AC Adapter detected

I haven't physically touched the RAM or any other internals and the AC adapter is the one that came with the laptop, which I've been using without any problems for over a year.

Again, any help would be much appreciated.

I have seen many problems like this but can't seem to find the answer.
New Dell laptop, Inspiron 1525, works well with wireless and dial up. Taken to work and tried to simply plug into my exisiting broadband server with a working ethernet cord, unplugged it from my working HP win XP and tried making it connect over to the laptop and no luck. It connects to the local network, but then will not move on to the internet/
. I took out Norton and put in AVG after many attempts and someone suggested that Norton was blocking. Have tried putting in IP numbers etc. please any help????!!!!
it has been weeks without answer and I just want to switch from the desktop to a laptop. Is it something in the dell itself or vista program?. I get the famous "error 815" something about the server name, what is that. nothing seems to take.
thanks, help please

Does your work place have an IT department? If so, they should be consulted.

If instead it's just a free for all at work, what kind of network? Domain? Using auto or static IPs? Can you be more precise about "connects to the local network" and about "will not move on to the internet/"?

I'm sorry I didn't know what to put for the subject, and I hope I'm in the right forum. Forgive me if I'm not.

My Dell Inspiron 1420 (Vista) laptop is two years old. About 4 months ago, it started doing something weird. When I'm typing an email, I get a few paragraphs down and the cursor suddenly jumps back up several lines into what I had previously typed and starts typing there. I have to delete the letters and move the cursor back to where I had left off and begin typing again. This happens repeatedly. When I'm writing a private message in Facebook, the same thing happens plus I can only type a few paragraphs and then I can't type any further. Actually, I am typing but the lines are "jumping" and I can't see what I'm typing. It's so hard to describe unless you've seen this in person.

About two months ago, my hard drive crashed. I went to a computer repair guy and he put a new hard drive in and reloaded the software that was on it (which wasn't really anything, as I never did even install my word processing software). Anyway, I was thinking that would solve the problem, but it still does it.

Has anyone come across this or do you understand what I'm explaining that you could help me? It's very frustrating.

Thanks for any help!
Sue

Hello all.

I just got a new 1530 from Dell about a month ago and just yesterday, it started having start up problems. It failed to start once yesterday morning, and I decided to run "start up repair". A few seconds in, it asked if I wanted to use system restore, and I selected yes. However, the start up repair wouldn't stop, so I manually turned off my computer. When I turned it back on, it worked perfectly fine. However, when I tried to use it again later, it booted successfully, but then simply turned off when I tried to connect to a network. When I tried turning it on a few seconds later, it failed to start up again. Using start up repair again, it said it was trying to repair the disk. Although it said "this may take more than an hour to repair", it was still working after I left it on for 12 hours. Frustrated, I turned it off and tried to see if it would start up normally.

In short, it didn't. In fact, it said "Disk read error. Press ctl+alt+del to restart". Upon doing so, it tries to boot, and then displays the same message (Disk read error).

I'm running "pre-boot diagnostics" right now because I really don't know what else to do....

Desperate for help,
LittleBunny

First partition magic doesn't support vista. it was written in the XP hey day and doesn't know how to cope with vista or win 7.

there are many undelete 3rd party applications. You should stop using it untill you retrieve the data

If the data has not been overwrittin you should be able to retrieve some if not all.

I have a home network with an computer using an XP operating system and it is networked via a Linksys WRT54GS router. I also have another desktop that uses windows Vista Home Premuim. Between the two machines we use either a Lexmark e232 and or a HP G85 printer. There has never been a printing or shring issue between these two computers. I was recently given a Dell 922 Printer and bout a Gateway M-Series laptop running Vista Home premium. For the life of me, I can't get the laptop to print via network with the Dell. The laptop doesn't have any problem adding and or printing to the other 2 printers.
The error I keep getting is 0x0000000d. I tried the registry fix that Microsoft recomments, but with no luck. Any help or guidance is appreciated.

A:Can't network a Dell 922 between and XP server computer and a laptop with Vista Home

This is a procedure that I've had success with installing Vista printers when the normal install didn't work.
Temporarily connect the printer to the Vista machine and install it as a local printer using the proper Vista drivers.
Disconnect the printer and move it to the XP machine it normally connects to and make sure that it's configured as a shared printer.
Open the Printers and Faxes folder on the Vista machine, right click on the printer and select properties.
Create a new Local Port for this printer with a name of the full network path name to the shared printer, i.e. \\computer_name\printer_name.

I'm still trying to fix my sister's laptop (more out of sheer determination at this point). I gave up on trying to fix the black screen problem and on trying to get to her files, and did a full Factory Restore... Vista booted up perfectly after that...and then I tred to get online.

Here's what I know: The wireless adapter is enabled (when I press "F2" a little icon pops up with an antenna with waves coming off of it, so I know it's on). When I run the connection utility, it says "Windows cannot find any networks", but my network is fully operational and I am connected to it on my computer, laptop, cell phone, playstation, and tivo, so I know the signal is working. I ran a diagnostic on the adapter and it passed everything, so from that I can see that the computer recognizes it and it is functioning. I also tried to update the driver but still had no luck.

Any other ideas? I'm still floating with the idea of wiping vista and using my OEM CD to install XP, but I want to make sure the thing is functioning properly first. Any suggestions are appreciated.

A:Dell laptop w/ Vista doesn't recognize wireless network

Hi liguy,

OK, on the laptop:

1. In Network and Sharing Center, is Network Discovery turned on?

2. In Manage Network Connections, are there any other connections shown besides your wireless? Any with a red X; if so, disable it.

3. If the above is all OK, open a command window (Start, Run, type Cmd in Open: Box and click OK). In the command window type ipconfig /all (space between g and /, no space after /), right click on window, click on select all, right click on window icon at top left, select edit > copy, and paste result in your reply.

My daughter's Dell Inspiron 1525, service tag J53SWG1. The laptop is running Windows Vista Ultimate with the most recent service pack. (Windows update does not show any available updates.)

The laptop has been giving Blue screen errors for the past 3 -4 weeks. The stop errors are always different. Most of the BSD occur either surfing the web or playing games on Facebook.

I updated the driver's via Dell Support & installed a new copy of McAfee Internet Security. I ran an antivirus scan an it came up clean. I ran Malware bytes scan & it also came back clean.

My daughter uses a cool pad under the laptop, plugged into the USB port, to ensure it stays cool. (I've use the laptop without the cool pad & the laptop did not get hot.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When I type - whether it's in an email, instant messaging, or surfing the net - whe I type, the cursor will suddenly reposition itself to some random place in my previous text. This problem started when the laptop was brand new (it's one year old). I've typed fast, I've typed slow. I've made sure my hand or thumb is not accidentally brushing the touch-pad. I've rebooted, I've reinstalled, all to no avail. Any suggestions? I cannot send the computer back to Dell at this point because I actually took out Vista and installed XP to see if it would fix. I reverted back to Vista, but I'm sure Dell would see what I did and the warranty would be void.

I have a Dell XPS M1330 with Windows Vista. I recently started a project which requires a lot of video editing and was handed a JVC GY-HD101E camera. Everything has gone smoothly except I can't seem to import my videos from the camera to my computer through Windows Movie Maker and the IEEE 1394 (firewire) port. When I start my computer with the firewire cable plugged in, a window appears in Windows which says "Installing driver software" and the new hardware is identified as a "Digital Still Camera". The first step of the install is called "Searching preconfigured driver folders..." and it usually fails within 30 seconds. However I was able to go further in the process one time. I deleted the file called INFCACHE.1 in the C:/Windows/inf/ folder which seems (according to my net research) to have caused a lot of driver problems. After restarting the process began again and got to the second step which was searching through windows update for a driver, a driver was found which seemed to be downloaded and the installed, so the process finished. However it didn't seem to change anything since Windows Movie Maker didin't find any camera and when I restarted the driver process began again and failed once again.

I also tried connecting the camera to a friends iBook but it didn't even find the camera.

There should be a service tag located on the laptop's bottom. Surf over to Dell's support site (Dell - Drivers and Downloads) and input the service tag. You should be able to download the drivers you are missing.

I have experienced a lot of problems when I first attempted to install XP on on my laptop which came with windows vista preloaded. I somehow managed to setup dual boot.

The problem then was to find the right drives for me dell XPS m1330 laptop. Dell would not support for XP.

So what did I do? I wrote two posts on my blog with step by step procedures to:

1. install XP on a vista laptop
2. XP drivers for Dell XPS m1330

Hello
My husband uses Chrome and it is running very slow. Firefox seems unaffected.
I recently wiped my computer after a nasty virus and have been trying out various security systems recently trying to decide what I want to buy. Currently using trial version of Avast. I am guessing that I need to take some of those off and would love any advise to get rid of unnecessary programs. I am looking at you, HP!
In looking at other threads I read potential helpers like to have people download and run speccy and minitoolbox to spot what is wrong. Thanks in advance for your help, A

Over the last 2 days I have been having a problem as indicated in the title of this post. The fault has rectified itself 3 times, but again today, it is back to "battery plugged in, not charging." As I am running the laptop (Windows Vista Home Premium; 32 bit) on the adapter without problems, I assume that the adapter itself may not be faulty.
I also have a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop running Windows 7.  Can I safely use that adapter with the Vista laptop, without causing damage to the Vista ?  If it is safe to do so, and the battery on the Vista starts charging, then it would indicate that the Vista adapter/charger has some kind of fault.
Hoping someone can give me some guidance. Thanks.

A:Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. Battery plugged in not charging. Can I use adapter from a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop ?

If the adapter has the same plug and the same or higher power rating, you can swap them.
Check to see whether the 1545 recognizes the AC adapter or whether it shows unknown (F2 at powerup).  If it shows unknown with two different adapters, you have a bad power jack or a bad mainboard.

We have 5 Dell computers that need to be reformatted and reinstall the OS - The problem We are having is it will go all the way through the format process and get to the end and will give errors such as can not complete must dismount, one or two that we have had luck with it will install the OS over the old one and keep files and that's not what we want to do, I want a fresh start with everything cleaned out. All of the computers will not let us get into bios they just go right to windows start up. Anyone have any help with Dells? I have to pass this information onto my partner since I am not doing the work directly.

A:Dell Format

All five computers have the exact same problems? That's pretty suspect.

To enter the BIOS, try the DEL key. As for the mount error, do these computers have unique hard drive configurations? RAID arrays? SCSI drives?

Hello All!

I'm a new user and thought I needed to post a new thread but bare with me. I have Dell Inspiron 2400 loaded updated to Windows XP SP2 Home Edition. It has been hijacked in a sense with malware. I want to format and reload XP. I have backed up all that I need. The original Dell Reinstall disc is XP SP1 so it tells me it can't proceed since the current SP2 is a newer version. It gave me some information to restart, then F12 Boot menu than I chose option 4 for CD-ROM. When I proceed it boots normally. I get no menu allowing me to format or reinstall? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

A:Format and reinstall Windows XP on a Dell.

I would download killdisk from here http://www.killdisk.com/ its free and then do a low level format which will get rid of malware and your sp2 operating system, then I would reinstall using your os disk with sp1 and then I would download sp2 or if you have not got an amd processor I would download sp3 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389

A buddy of mine has a friend who got tons of viruses/spyware on his computer (Dell desktop). He tried getting rid of everything and then when that didn't do much good, he tried doing a repair install - of course, that never works.

After that, he tried formatting the drive...it'd get to 99% done each time but couldn't finish. I'm not sure what the exact error was. I think he somehow got an option to reinstall windows at this point, though. So he did. All it did was install a second copy of windows xp and, while it works, the original intallation is still there with no easy way to get rid of it.

He also tried putting in a different hard drive and doing a clean install on there. It wouldn't have any of that! I think he said he got XP installed on that drive, but the computer won't boot without the old drive still there. As long as it's plugged in as well, it'll boot up. If not - no go. He tried messing with the jumpers and bios settings (boot order, etc), but couldn't get anything to fix it.

Now I assume that either some infection is causing this, or this is some kind of proprietary BS on Dell's part. Does anyone have any idea what he can do to get this computer formatted, xp installed clean, and working properly again?

If any more detail is needed, I'll try to give it. I've sent him the link to this thread, so if he wants, he can jump in with more info as well.

Thanks.

A:Can't format Dell hard drive?

Hard drives on a Dell are not manufacturer proprietary.

Go to the drive manufacturers website and download their zero fill utility (it will be listed as a low level format). Zero fill the drive (except for the recovery partition if there is a recovery partition) this will give him a totally clean drive. Boot the machine from the Dell re-installation disk, and it should find the drive as "new-unformatted". Let Windows format the disk, then install the operating system.

He should access BIOS and set the boot zequence to 1st floppy drive, 2nd CD-ROM and 3rd hard drive. If there is no floppy drive, set the 1st device as the CD-ROM.

About a third of the way through the installation he will get a message to "press enter" to boot from the CD. At this point DO NOT press enter and the machine will reboot itself.

After installation he will need to put in the Dell driver CD and reload the motherboard and other drivers, then he can reload his applications for the application CD.

I want to reinstall an operating system from Dell OEM recovery discs.

Can I just format the hard drive clean before I put the recovery discs in or do the recovery discs require some evidence of an existing O/S to complete the install?

the O/S currently has a corrupt registry that will not allow it to boot into windows or even safe mode.

I think it had the sasser worm because I am getting the

Lsass.exe error

an invalid parameter was passed to the system or device

and then it reboots, over and over again

Hello,

I'm not sure if this is the best location on this forum for this post, but I'm hoping someone can help!

I'm running Win 8, upgraded from Win 7, and I first noticed that I could not run LocalDB when I tried to create my first LightSwitch app in VS 2012. The error reported there is that it cannot start, but later I found in the sql error logs the following output:
2012-09-04 12:28:02.43 spid4s Cannot use file 'C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Local DB\Instances\v11.0\master.mdf' because it was originally formatted with sector size 4096 and is now on a volume with sector size 3072. Move the file to a volume with a sector size that is the same as or smaller than the original sector size.
2012-09-04 12:28:02.43 spid4s Error: 5178, Severity: 16, State: 1.
I've checked and verified that the sector size on this drive is indeed 4096, and some research seems to suggest that some Dell bios's may have to do with the incorrect reporting of the sector size to some applications.
Does anybody have any suggestions on what I can do to get this thing running?

Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Hi,

I have a Dell XPS 13 9343 that came with windows 8.1 and I've upgraded to windows 10.
I would like to format it and to do a clean install to windows 10 and after that to create a dual boot with ubuntu.
I don't want to recover anything, just format everything.

My question is:
1. What is the best way of doing it? Is there any preparation needed before formatting (except backup)? If someone can point me to a relevant detailed guide it will be great.

2. Do i need to care that I want to install ubuntu as dual boot when I format and install windows? Or just to install it after windows is already installed?

Thanks.

Hey Everyone,
My friend has a Dell Inspiron 9400 Laptop, and he wants me to format it for him. I tried to use the quick format utility. However, when I start the laptop, the dell splash screen comes up with the options of F12 and F2 for boot options and bios options. However, the normal www.dell.com splash screen where you are supposed to hit CTRL+F11 does not come up, it just comes up with a blank blinking cursor for about 3 seconds and goes to the windows bootup.

I have found a site called the DSRFIX tool that is supposed to repair the repair partition. But I am wondering if I am doing anything wrong. My friend says that he didn't have any kind restore discs with his laptop. So, I am wondering if I need to run this repair utility to get the partition back, or if his laptop does not have the restore partition. He does have the diagnostic utility when you go into boot options, but there is no option for the repair utility.

On my own dell laptop, the www.dell.com splash with the blue ribbon on the top and CTRL+F11 works for my Inspiron 9300. Can someone help me figure out what is going wrong here?

Thanks for any help.

A:Dell Inspiron 9400 Format Troubles

Sounds like you are doing everything correctly. The restore partition may be corrupt. After taking thousands of complaints Dell changed it's mind on not offering restore cd's. Your friend (and you) can call Dell support, give them the necessary info, and they will send a free restore cd in just a few days.

The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer?

But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested.

About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used.

Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro?

I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course.

Hi, I had a GPU fail in my Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. The card that failed was an NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS. The Vostro laptop actually can accept an NVIDIA 8600 GT card too. So I ordered the replacement part from Dell for the 8600 and they shipped me a refurbished unit.
The surgery to put in the new card took all night for hack like to do. I did not look carefully at the refurbished unit they shipped me as I was nervous handling the card (that I might break it).
But when I turned on the laptop after the installation, I did not get a pause at the BIOS saying “I see new hardware” like I did when I upgraded the RAM.
After the computer booted up I uninstalled the 8400 driver and then installed the 8600 driver. There was a snag at it’s possible that Windows automatically reinstalled the 8400 driver during one the required reboots but I KNOW that I wrote the 8600 driver over top at least (I had hoped to do a clean uninstall then reinstall but Windows tried to grab a driver for me).
So now when I right click on computers, properties device manager it shows the video as still the 8400 card. The 8400 card I removed has a sticker on it that says KU907 on it. The invoice for the 8600 that Dell sent for the 8600 says KU907 on it too.
I think I was sent the wrong part from Dell (I paid a higher price for the 8600 GPU) . Is it possible that a legacy driver is making the Vostro think it has the 8400 when the part IS an 8600. Or when I go to the Device Manager, does the computer physically c... Read more

A:Dell Laptop w/ Windows 8 won't boot past dell logo screen

Hello Univers789,
Re-installing windows is the last resort. So before doing that, you can try the steps mentioned below which might fix the issue. 1. Restart the laptop and start tapping the F2 key at the Dell logo for enter the BIOS. 2. Navigate to the “Advanced” menu. 3. Change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from Intel Smart Response to AHCI. 4. Press F10 to save changes and exit. 5. Reboot the system. 6. Go back into the BIOS by tapping the F2 key and change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from AHCI to Intel Smart Response. 7. Save changes and exit by pressing the F10 key. 8. Reboot the system and it should boot normally into Windows. In case the above steps don’t fix the issue, run the Pre-Boot System Assessment (PSA / ePSA) Diagnostics. Run the test and check if gives any error code. Note down the error code and update me with the same, would let you know the next course of action. Please write back with results.

Hi there. I bought a Dell Inspiron 17R-5720 back in September 2012, and have been having this issue pretty much since I bought it from Amazon. The computer is running Windows 7 64 Bit, 6 GB RAM, Intel Core i5-3210M @ 2.50 GHz. I have Microsoft Security Essentials installed and run scans regularly.

Pretty much what happens is that the screen will turn to colored static, and the computer will be unresponsive. In order to make the machine usable again the power button must be held down and the computer restarted. The odd thing about it is that it almost always happens when I am in the process of moving the laptop from one place to another. For example moving the computer from my lap to the table next to me. It has happened once or twice when I just touched the computer while it was on the table next to me. A few times the screen just turned black.

Since it is still under warranty, I called Dell support and they sent out a technician, who didn't seem to do any sort of troubleshooting. He replaced the motherboard and the LCD display. This of course did not fix the problem, so I called Dell again. This time, they had me send the computer to them. They received and sent it out the very same day, again, it doesn't seem that they did any real troubleshooting. When the same malfunction cropped up again, I of course called Dell and they said that when they received the laptop there was some sort of cable inside that was "loose", so the connected this cable and sen... A:Dell Laptop, Display Turns to Static/System Freezes, Dell Can't Fix

The technician Dell sent came to my house today. He replaced the motherboard (again), the LCD screen (again), and the hard drive. Fast forward five hours later, and guess what? The problem still hasn't been fixed. I just got off the phone with Dell support, of course their first suggestion was to send the computer in again and have them "fix" it. It took about an hour of going back and forth being on hold/arguing before they finally said they would "elevate" my case and and have someone call me on Monday to discuss it. I think I've given them plenty of chances to solve this, now I just want a replacement computer. Though with their track record, I'm not holding my breath. I'm even doubting that I'll get a phone call.

Does anyone think that this is power supply related? Not the power cord itself (I've used two different cords), but whatever is inside that powers the system. Sorry, I'm not that computer savvy.

My home desktop is connected to a wireless router through AT&T U-verse and it's broadcasting just fine. I can see the name and everything when I try and connect on my laptop but there is always an error that brings me to a troubleshooting screen. I've made sure the password is correct by going to Start-Run, IPCONFIG and then typing my IP address into the address bar in my browser. I dont know what else I can do, I feel like I've tried everything! Help please.

A:Laptop (Win7 Dell Inspiron 1525) won't connect to desktop (XP Dell) wireless router

Sometimes, you need to replace the router.
Sometimes, you can call your service provider and ask them to take a look on line to see if the subscription needs to be refreshed.
But often, all that is needed (despite the fact that it is a lot of work) is to uninstall your existing system, then reboot, and reinstall everything.
You might also find success by looking at your device manager in Windows to see if you have any grey, red, or yellow flags by any related device. That may show you have a permanent hardware failure if you cannot restore it, then you are off to the store or your provider for a new cable modem or router.

I want to switch between 2 laptops onto a DELL E178FPc Monitor (which is VGA input only).  The Laptops are a DELL E6410 -VGA out only, running Win7    and  a DELL Inspiron 5000 series machine -HDMI output, running Win10.
I have tried to achieve this using a KVM switch (the ATEN CS22U, non-powered). It claims to be Win7 compliant.
When I connect it to the E6410's VGA port and then in to the Monitor it says 'no signal detected'. Subsequent research would suggest that even if I were to somehow get a display through the KVM switch it will be lost as soon as you switch to the other laptop (!).
I have come to believe through research on the web that the E6410 Laptop will only work with a VGA monitor being directly connected to its port, or an alternative (powered) KVM Switch with so called Active-DDC (whatever that is!) may also work.
Needless to say I have exhausted my tech knowledge on this one.
Can anyone offer further advice or recommend a solution?
Ed.

I am plugging a HDMI cable into the HDMI port on a Dell E5440 laptop and the other end of the cable, which is Display Port, into a Dell P1914S monitor.
Nothing shows on the external monitor no matter what I do or try on either the laptop or monitor?  I have tried this on a Dell E7000 series laptop also with no result on that one either?
Does the HDMI port on Dell laptops support video or do I need to utilise some other means of connecting a second monitor.  Bear in mind there is no VGA output on these laptops.
Thanks in advance
Wayne

A:Dell Laptop HDMI to Dell Monitor DisplayPort?

Display port is NOT bidirectional. You can go from DISPLAY PORT OUT to HDMI IN but you CANNOT GO HDMI OUT to DIsplay port in.
I would suggest an HDMI to VGA adapter.

Typo on the title, I ment Truemobile 360, NOT 355.

I have an older Dell D400 I'm trying to breath some life back into and I thought I would try out Windows 7.

Well, I got everything working good I think, but the Dell 360 Truemobile bluetooth.

Windows 7 just won't see it. No matter what driver pack I try, it says no bluetooth found. The official Dell Vista pack asks me to turn on the bluetooth but I can't even figure out how to do that, and the light on the laptop is not lit up.

I see dell has this app/patch that it suppose to enable the bluetooth but that also tells me no blue tooth found.

I can't use my bluetooth cellphone as a modem, help please.

That being said, other people have been having the same issue with other laptops, same internal bluetooth and W7 but what worked for them doesn't seem to want to work for me.

On a side note it work's under Windows XP, just not W7.

A:Issues with Dell D400 Laptop, Dell 355 Bluetooth and W7

I opened the computer, removed the BT, rebooted, shut down, reinstalled the BT, rebooted and it's working now.

Hrmf...

Thanks anyway I guess.

I have a dying Dell D610 laptop running XP Professional. I want to reformat/restore it, but I don't have the original OS disc (but I do have the original drivers/utilities disc.

But I DO have a legit Dell XP Home edition SP2 disc, with a key & everything (from my mom's Dell Desktop of about the same era as the laptop).

The question is now obvious, can I use the OS disc I have to re-do my laptop?

Thanks!

A:Can I Load My Dell XP Desktop Disc on Dell Laptop?

What do you mean by dying ? It would be senseless to reinstall, eg, if your HD was "dying".

As far as I know, an Install disk is not different for a desktop and Laptop. It will configure the OS based on the hardware you have on the laptop. Backup what you need from the laptop, and have at it.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop.  Recently, I bought a Dell Ultrasharp monitor U2412M to attach to my laptop to have an ergonomic home office.   My knowledge of computers/hardware is pretty... rudimentary.
24"1920 x 1200Nice adjustable stand1x DVI-D port, 1x display port, 1x VGA port, 1x USB 2.0 upstream port, 4x USB downstream ports
I use my computer for writing documents, internet surfing, and rarely for watching tv.  Eventually, I will buy a lighter and newer laptop, but probably not for a year or two.
I think I bought the wrong monitor....  I was hoping to buy something to use now, that will last, and that will work with any future laptop I buy.
My monitor just arrived.  I connected it to my laptop with the VGA cable (my laptop doesn't have DPI or HDMI input).  It worked, but the picture didn't look.... very good.
It is my understanding that VGA connections are the worst quality.  Can I use an ?adapter to connect to the VGA cable to access the DVI-D port on the monitor?  Or is this the best I can get?  I'm not even sure what ?video cards are, or whether I need one of these.
I also looked up the specs on my old laptop and it says the specs of my laptop screen are
1366 x 768 pixel
So is this the limit of what an attached monitor can be?

Any input appreciated.  Thanks.

When I try to boot up, the dell logon screen comes on for a second along with the progress bar at the bottom of screen, the progress bar does not fill with the color and the dell emblem goes away..... the circle of dots that should spin also does not spin anymore, just a black screen

A:Dell Laptop will not finish Dell logon screen

Hi Raymond2013,
I will recommend you to run the diagnostics on your system to check the hardware functionality:

Restart your system and keep tapping 'F12' as soon as the Dell logo appears.
Highlight 'Diagnostics' using up/down arrow keys and press enter.

Please let me know if you get any error code/message.
In case the diagnostics pass, try to boot your system in ‘Safe mode with Networking’ from Advanced boot menu and see if it works:

Restart the system and keep tapping 'F8' as soon as the Dell logo appears.
Highlight 'Safe Mode with Networking' using arrow keys and press enter.

Note: If your system has Windows 8, F8 key will not work to bring up Advanced Boot menu. Try to boot your system for 3 times and it will automatically bring up the Advanced Boot menu.
Keep me posted. Please reply for any further questions.
