Try uninstalling, then reinstalling the video drivers.

If it continues, I'd say that the video chip/card is dying.

This should be an easy fix, I just do not know where to get the CCC for my computer. I have an Intel i3 Processor and an ATI Radeon HD 5670 Graphics card. Last time I tried to download the CCC it said I did not have any AMD software to be detected. I just want to get rid of these stupid black bars.

Note: I am running windows 7 professional off a bootcamp partition on a mid 2010 iMac. Windows 7 runs fine though.

I have tried searching everywhere and trying everything that I have found and nothing works.

I am running windows xp on an older packard bell monitor. I'm not even sure what size it is maybe a 14" or 13"? On packard bells website they don't have a driver for this monitor. I tried to install a generic driver for 640x480 and that doesn't work. The screen resolution is set on 800x600 and if you put it on anything higher the screen gets all fuzzy. So two question. How do I fix this and how do I figure out what size my monitor is?

Hi guys, I have a quick question regarding some games I am trying to play. I just got a new laptop, it's a cheapo - Asus K200MA, 11.6" screen, running Windows 8.1. No graphics card or anything, but it's powerful enough to play older games. I am trying to play Half Life and Elderscrolls 3 Morrowind but I have the same problem with each game. When I start the game I have black margins, approx. 1 inch on both sides of the screen, so it's not displaying in full screen mode. I have tried some fixes like going to screen resolution/advanced/IntelHD Graphics Control Panel/Maintain Display Scaling but it doesn't work. I am not sure if this is a problem with my monitor or with windows 8.1. It's a generic monitor so it doesn't have a lot of options. I've searched for a while but can't find any solutions online. Can anyone help? Thanks so much.

Cheers,

A:Games won't play in full screen...black margins on both sides

The only thying I can think of is that your gaming res isnt set to your native desktop res. I know that you said you have looked at this, bu tI suggest checking, see what your desktop res is, and make sure that games have the same setting. I play HL and dont get black margins, so I know that it will run properly.

Hi,

Not sure if it is applicable in your case but I had the exact same problem last week on a Dell XPS Lappy.

Vista loading progress bar ... then nothing.

I was able to start in safe mode with networking, and surf - but never got the desktop to boot in normal mode.

If you wish then check back through all my posts by clicking this link, to take you to the thread I started on 20 Oct.

I thought it was a hardware fault, I was given guidance on things to try - but the only thing that got me up and running was a factory restore.

Okay, this problem has been irritating me for quite some time now. My issue is this: I open a game called Ultima Online and click full screen with the highest resolution available. My result: a blown up play screen with two bars on each side of my screen about two inches thick cutting off my gameplay. I had this exact same issue with Call of Duty: Black Ops, and changing the resolution to 1080p quickly solved this. I also have a flickering problem with Ultima Online when I enter full screen, which many people have had issues with and few found solutions. A big thing with them is that they use Razor and that causes the flickering, but I do not use Razor... My question is, does anyone know how to fix this or have any suggestions I can try? My operating system is windows 7 64 bit, laptop toshiba qosmio x505-Q880, i7 processor, 18.4 inch HD display with a Nvidia GTS 360M graphics card, so my GPU is not the issue here. My uncle plays Ultima Online as well with the same operating system on a desktop with a 22 inch widescreen 1080p monitor and has no issues at all. the game looks great and works fine. He does use an AMD graphics card, so if there are any Nvidia Control Panel options I could change that would be an easy fix.

Things I have tried:
Reinstalling the game with a fresh download of the client
updating graphics driver (it's up to date)
playing with some of the graphics options in the Nvidia Control Panel, but alot of them I don't know what the do

This has never happened before. I went on vacation last week and figured i would turn my computer off to save power. So i did. When i came back and turned on my computer after a week, i saw these slanted black bars with little stripes of screen through them, they were slide up and up and up, over and over, very fast. I got to the setup screen where all the information for the computer is at (Bios, Ram, CPU speed, etc.) and it stopped. I go back into windows and it started again right when i get to the windows loading screen with the blue bar and windows icon. After about 5 to 10 minutes it wears off for some reason but every time i turn my monitor off, or it goes to power save mode and i turn it back on, they are there again for another 5 minutes. What is this and how can i fix it?

recently after a windows update that did not install successfully every time i turn on my computer it would go completely black after the green loading bars and stay that way the whole time.

Ive tried safe mode but it still goes to the black screen and tried start up repair but i left it on for 10 hours and no progress. Also tried recovery to a earlier point but could not due to an error of corrupted files.
Tried bootrec /fixboot , bootrec /buildbcd but that did not work either
Using System restore, it goes to a blue screen and freezes

I bought a replacement LCD for my neice's Compaq Presario CQ50-139WM. I installed it carefully. (I even reinstalled it two more times!) Now, the Windows desktop only uses most of the display, with a 3" bar on the right side and a 1/2" bar on the bottom.

It appears that the desktop is nearly square. I have a Mobile Intel® 4 Series Express Chipset Family. The only two resolution options are 1024x768 and 800x600. Both options fill up the same space. It's like it gave me a smaller monitor than what I actually have.

Further, the bottom black bar stretches out the mouse curser and start button. THe start button bottom streaks over the 1/2" black bar, and when I get the cursor at the bottom of the desktop, it streaks over the 1/2" black bar also.

These black bars are occurring BEFORE Windows boots up. The black screen on startup has a Compaq logo, and it's clear that everything is shifted to the left.

I've made sure that I've updated everything that is possible, but I suspect it's not a software issue. Any ideas?

Have you updated the BIOS? You may need a new screen. You can RMA it and they will take it back. It may be a common thing and will get an answer faster if you call HP. Hope this helps.

I've had my Compaq Presario SR1250NX for 1 1/2 years. It's a Pentium 4 using Windows XP. My monitor is a 17" flat screen (not panel).

About 2 weeks ago the monitor screen display started jumping in and out on both sides.

I set the refresh rate to its highest setting (85) and that helped but did not stop it, it just made it less frequent from happening every minute to every several minutes.

Nothing has changed in my home office electronically. My phone and cell phones are the same they've always been sitting in the same places. I haven't added any programs to my computer, just normal updates as they occur.

What could this be? What should I do next?

Thanks,
Blake

Hi @yuensiong, Welcome to HP Forums! I have read your post and wanted to help. I understand that your got white patches on the laptop screen. Is the HP Support contact number you called is +65 6272 5300 (8:30am - 5:30pm Monday to Friday (excl Public Holiday)) in Singapore? Also, you can connect an external screen to the laptop to test if the problem is with the hardware or with the driver. If external screen works well, it is the hardware issue with the laptop screen, and the laptop screen need to be replaced. Let me know if you need further assistance. Regards,

Could someone please tell me how to turn these 2.35:1 mpeg4s into a 16:9 without any squishing?

A:Need help with black bars =(

This is a very common question on video forums.

You have to either trim off of the ends in your editor or squish the video Or live with the black bars.

Since I want to see all of the movie I live with the black bars.
This is because 16:9( like a HDTV is 1.77:1, so to fill the screen you have to lose the difference between that and 2.35:1.
do the black bars on the sides of 4:3 video bother you?

Bottom line you can put it through a editor and trim it, losing some quality in the process as well as part of the video. or if you TV set has a Zoom function you can try that.

Found this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/16:9
There is a image partway down on the right side that shows the various aspect ratios as compared to a HDTV.

Good Luck

Searching through past postings on the forum I noticed much about black bars, whether side or top, related to gaming. My issue with the bars is not about games but more for example in making 1024x768 fill the screen area. I recently got a new monitor, Acer widescreen, 1366x768, and of course anything less than that shows black sidebars.

So, how can I expand 1024 proportionately (or for that matter 800x600) to fit the screen? Btw, the basic suggestion I've read elsewhere is go to CP-Display and slide to native resolution but that's not what I'm addressing here. What I want - and I know this won't sound the most technical - is the "look" of 1024 (or lower) to fill the screen area. On the old CRT I could switch to any size and there were no black bars.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Dan

A:Black Bars Begone!

What you want to will not work as you'd like to.

Apparently your old CRT display had 4:3 aspect ratio; you could switch to any other 4:3 resolution without distorting the image.

Now your new display has the aspect ratio 16:9. Hopefully this will explain it for you:

Let's take a 1024*768 image:
Showing it full screen on a 16:9 1366*768 display, you have three options. First, change its resolution to 1366*768:
The height remained the same, the width was increased, causing distortion.

Second possibility, to keep image's original size, which leaves the black area either on the left or right:
This is of course only natural as the height of the image remains the same (768 pixels) and the width of the image (1024 pixels) is not enough to cover an area of 1366 pixels.

The last option is to resize the image to 1366*1024 (= same 4:3 aspect ratio than 1024*768) then fill the 16:9 aspect ratio 1366*768 area with this 1366*1024 image, which of course crops the image showing it only partially:
Check the resolution options using Screen Resolution tool (right click on desktop, select Screen Resolution), and select a 16:9 aspect ratio resolution that suits you.

A:Black Bars around You Tube Vid

The problem seems to be with the video itself rather than the embedded object, to fix it you would have to crop the video yourself. Make sure the video uses either 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio such as 480x360 or 640x360, respectively.

Hi in WMP 12 when watching a video I get a small black bonder (bars) of about4 mm around all sides.
It happens in fullscreen on both 16:9 and 4:3 videos.

I have the video resolution on Windows set to 1080p @60hz and In Windows Media Center it's set to 1080p @50hz.
It does the same for 60 50 30 or 25hz videos. I play a lot of 50/25 hz videos as in Australia.

In other players (iTunes for example) they play with no border (bars).
I would use other players only but want to use Windows Media Center and that uses Windows Media Player features to play videos so I get the same border(bars).

Hopefully someone here can help.

Thanks Kevin

A:WMP 12 Black Border (Bars)

An update: I am going to use Media Center (which is just an interface for Media Player anyway) as I found a way to get videos to fill the screen properly.
I found if I play certain videos twice or 2 different ones (only works on some combinations) then the will go to there correct size.

Like I have a 1080p video of Led Zeppelin which has to be played a second time to go to the right size but my 4:3 videos of The Flintstones will not resize I play them first without using other videos to fix it first.

But I have to do it each time Media Center is closed and reopened.

I hope someone might have a clue what's going on.
I have even repair installed Windows and reset Media center back to defaults.
I have a I7 3770 8gb of ram a 128 ssd and 500gb hdd and a 7700 Series Radeon graphics

Hi all,

When I go to watch a non-widescreen DVD and have my DVD program in fullscreen mode I get black bars down the sides of the screen that are obviously keeping the fullscreen video in 4:3 aspect ratio. Thing is, I have my video card configged to display in full screen. (Catalyst Control Center --> Notebook Panel Properties --> Scaling Options --> Full Screen)....

I don't know if it has to do with the fact that I don't have Dell Media Experience installed on my PC, because as of current I don't have the install disks for that program.... I installed a DVD player off of sourceforge.net which provides me with the decoder, and I use RealPlayer to watch the DVD... If I reinstall Dell Media Experience will that fix the problem, or is there any way to force full screen?

Specs:

Dell Inspiron 6400 Laptop
ATI Radeon Mobility X1300, 256 MB Memory

If you need any other specs, let me know.

Thanks for the help,

You need a DVD player, the DELLs laptop usually come with WinDVD or something like that. Don't you have that installed? Or use Windows Media Player 10. I rather use Windows Media Classic you get that off http://www.free-codecs.com/ and it has a lot of free stuff, free... You should contact tell DELL if that laptop is still under protection. Get free access to update your machine you might still be able too?

Three or four times now (and all in the past week) my second-user Compaq Armada (had it for 8 months ish, but it's fairly old - P2 233mhz) has booted up with inch-thick vertical black bars covering part of the screen (through the Compaq logo thing, the Windows loading screens, the AVG boot-up scanner and it's still there on the desktop) tilting the screen forward slightly fixes it straight away. It then looks perfectly fine - colours etc are correct and sharp all over the display.

There's a rattle and the feeling that something's falling inside the lid every time it's opened and that's been happing for about 2 months now and I haven't worried about it too much until now and I don't know if it's connected, and everything apart from the dodgy display on start-up (not *every* time and not always coming in *exactly* the same places, and not always from the beginning or lasting right until the desktop) the system is running fine.

The laptop has never been dropped or anything (while I've owned it anyway) and is always stored lid-up, with nothing stacked on it, on a flat surface in a laptop carry bag when not in use.

So... anybody got any idea what's happening? My screen isn't about to die any second is it?

Thanks in advance,

Kat

A:Black bars on laptop display

Laptop screens are connected to the motherboard vis a ribbon cable. It's possible that this is loose, or cracked, as tilting the screen fixes the problem.

If you are handy enough around taking apart a laptop, then it is an easy enough operation to open it up and check for yourself, however it is very easy to do damage to the case, and componenets if you are unsure of yourself.

Take it to a repair shop, or if you are willing to muck around with it, provide Exact specifications of the laptop, and a serial number if it is still there. That will make is easier to find technical docs that can help.

Where can I find the serial number on my Compaq Computer?

I am trying to run certain games on full screen and I get these two black bars on the side of the screens. One emulator I used was "Project 64" and I set some options to make it exactly full screen and it worked.

But as for most PC games like Sims won't really work. Is there something wrong with my graphics card?

A:Black bars on side screens

it's probably the games' settings.
Some games only run in full screen 4:3 mode.

Well I have been having issues with my monitor. I'll give you a bit of what is going on. I had a Toshiba laptop I had hooked up to my monitor, everything worked great. It then crashed, I got a new Dell with Windows 8 64bit and Intel graphics. I have an HDMI to VGA adapter cause my laptop doesn't have a VGA port and monitor doesn't have HDMI. So I hook it up and get it to work but "Input Not Supported" was floating around the screen. So I changed the resolution. The only resolution that makes the "Input Not Supported" to go away is 1600X200. Well its clear picture but I have the annoying black bars on the side of my screen. I have looked around and everyone says to go to the CCC but I can't find it on here and from what I understand that is for AMD only(if I'm mistaken please explain to me how to make it work cause I have attempted it). So is there an Intel version or how do I fix it?

Hey guys. Lately I've been having this problem with my monitor (or Graphics card, not quite sure at this point) in which there are flashing black bars going across the screen, and I could really use some help. The problem persists usually about every other day, but it has never been quite as bad as this before. Attached and at the bottom of this post is a screenshot of the monitor with the black bars.

I've noticed that this happens more frequently when I play games such as Team Fortress 2 on Steam. The black bars would actually usually start at that point, and I would even find blue pixels laying in spots across the screen at some times. After playing for about an hour the game/screen would either start flickering or a message will pop-up stating, "Input Signal out of range".

I have a second monitor that doesn't have this problem at all, and this all started after I had returned from vacation in Mexico.

Steps I've taken
-Reinstalled and Reverted to old NVIDIA drivers
-Checked for new monitor drivers
-Checked monitor resolution and attempted using the monitor at a refresh rate of 59Hz/s
-Checked and unplugged/replugged monitor cables.

Also, a note: While in some programs (such as Firefox, Office, or Chrome) the black bars seem to have stopped. But going back to the desktop and they're still flashing.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I got a Sharp TV, 32" LC32GP3U-B (1080p full). I connected an hdmi cable from my laptop (1080p certified) to the TV.

BLACK BAR TV OUTPUT PROBLEM

I do not get the full screen output on my TV when connected via HDMI. The TV itself works fine in full screen (1080p). I DO get full screen output on any Linux o/s I test it with, via hdmi such as Ubuntu. However, I prefer to use Vista instead in order to use MCE and the plug-ins I have (Netflix, Joost, etc plus MCE remote). I duplicated this before and after upgrading to Vista SP1. I've duplicated this with many WHQL certified NVidia drivers as well. Literally about 10 different driver versions for my 8400M GT card. I cannot figure out why it is not showing full screen output, but I can confirm this happens in Vista only, not Linux (did not and will not test in XP). My index score in Vista is 5.3.

Nvidia panel shows proper 1920x1080 resolution.

Some drivers I've tried and duplicated the same problem:

174.93
175.12
167.43
163.75

Also, my TV settings are certainly proper since I do get full screen output in Linux and general TV viewing. I did try several new HDMI cables too, but thats irrelevant since it works fine in Linux.

Summary of settings / methods to fix the problem:
- 1920x1080p resolution (59 and 60Hz, same black bar problem)
- various Nvidia drivers
- Nvidia nTune overclocked (but keeps resetting back to factory on reboot)
- disabled aero interface in Vista

I'm not sure if this is a RAM, or video card issue. I've just started seeing this today. Seen it happen in an active and inactive application window like FF. Poppeeper. When I move the bar of the app around (disappearing below the start menu bar) then bring it up again, the problem is gone.

Any ideas which hardware/software is starting to fail?

A:Getting weird vertical black bars in window

Oooooh. This looks like either a driver issue or a bad display card. Is this a laptop or a desktop? If it's an HP laptop, does it have the ATI or the nVidia display chipset? My wife has a recent HP Laptop with the ATI display system and it had been notoriously hard to get working correctly. If you can post that information I'll see what I can do.

Hi there, I have ordered a couple of dvd's that were shot in High Definition * Widescreen *

Are there any add-ons or configurations I can do in Windows Media Player 11 to remove these black bars, like a zoom in feature, anything at all. I am using Sonic Cinemax DVD Pack.

ALT+3 is 200%, though that may not be a good idea.

The print preview does not show any black rectangled areas, and the document prints perfectly fine on my Vista machine. Please advise.

Hellp, my screen will not properly display the 800x600 resolution without stretching the screen and making it blurry. This started after i used an hdmi to connect to my tv. Hi, when I play call of duty 1 on my laptop the whole view is crushed leaving 2 black bars on the left and right hand side of the screen. It never used to do this and I am not sure what the problem is. I know it is not an in game problem because the settings are on full screen and the correct video mode. This never used to happen on this laptop so I must off accidently changed a setting. This only happens in game so it is not a screen resolution problem I think. Please can you help me solve this problem??

A:Call of Duty (Black bars ingame)

I don't know what your problem could be, although uninstalling and reinstalling could fix the problem. There is also another possibility. When you right click the shortcut, click properties and find the section through the tabs that lets you run an app as if it were on Win 7 or XP. That sometimes fixes things.

The HP 4500 Envy all-in-one printer is new, replacing a defunct Canon Pixma. I received an electronic 1099 form, and printed it from my Foxit Reader program. To my dismay, the printed form was obscured by black bars in 4 places. These do not show in the print preview, and after experimenting for some time, I can find no setting that accounts for the problem. I went online and tried reprinting the 1009 form from last year. The same problem occurred, but my hard copy in last year's records ? printed from Foxit but using the old Canon ? did not have the offending black bars. So far this is the only pdf with which I have a printing problem, but the fact that it occurs with the same form for two different years is puzzling and annoying. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated!

A:Black bars on printed pdf witih HP 4500e

Considerable time online with HP support which included remote access to my computer was unable to resolve this issue. The tech seemed to believe that it was related to the site hosting the 1099, even though the same form had printed without problem from my previous printer. If the problem develops on any other form/pdf, I will have to explore this further. For now, however, printing the screen capture of the pdf will suffice.

Black bars appear on text, resulting in me not able to see text. If I restart my laptop, it won't appear for a while but return at some point. I've scanned for virus' countless times, malware scans, etc. I do not have a system restore point to go back to. Wireless connection. Problems started occuring after Windows 10 anniversary 1607 update., but unsure whether its to do with the update. However I do think that the update has caused servere fps drops in games. For example, CS:GO used to run at 70-100fps, but now it runs at 30-40 fps. This has crippled my gaming experiance and I've also tried many things to resolve that issue, with no resultions.

New here. I have a Windows 7 machine that upgraded to WLM 2011 not too long ago. However, since that upgrade, after using WLM for just a few minutes, top and side navigation bars disappear and just become black (see attached). Launching a new e-mail also shows black top and bottom borders. Shutting down and restarting WLM restores everything until you start moving around in WLM again.

Has anyone seen this behavior before and have an idea what might correct it? It never occurred before the upgrade to WLM 2011 and it doesn't occur anywhere else. The machine and installation is a vanilla Dell PC with OEM Win7 Home Premium, nothing fancy.

Thanks.

Recently media player stopped playing avi's (other movies ok). After a day of tinkering I decided to do a fresh Windows 7 install using my fairly new 2nd HDD (previously used to test Windows 8). I used the USB install method from this forum. Bizarrely media player didn't work at all on the new install (media player has stopped working message). With repeat installs, everything else seems ok except media player. The best I've managed is to get media player working, but adding black letterbox bars top and bottom (see attached jpg). Updates usually make this half working wmp stop all together.

Things I have tried -

disable overclock
different USB pen drives
different iso (from links in this forum)

One more thing - when I first built this box I had trouble installing Windows 7 BSOD etc. I turned the overclock off and install went ok. Turn o/c back on and worked fine. Maybe I've had a mobo fault all along?

I purchased a new HP Notebook 1 week ago and have experienced recurring obscuring black bars and odd defacing of lines of texts.  This occurs in Internet Explorer, my email program (AOL) and also in Microsoft WORD.  I performed a system restore that this eradicated the problem for a few days.  Then, Windows 10 forces upgrades, and the problem reappeared.  Then, I altered Windows 10 to the default program build, and that also eradicated the problem.  Then, 2 days later, the problem appeared again.  I have difficulty believing that HP, a reputable company, and the builder of my last 3 computers, would release a product with pre-loaded software that would do this.  I would appreciate knowing how this display "bug" can be permanently corrected.  Otherwise, will I be facing restoring the windows operating system twice a week throughout the next 3 years of ownership?

Hi,

I have this really annoying problem and I'm about to conclude that it's time to buy a new video card but I'm hoping there is another way to fix this.

Please Look Here: http://www.geocities.com/lorenzopelswijk/verticalbars.html

Those lines keep coming up every once and a while. Whenever they appear, the only way to remove them is to shut down my PC, wait for a couple minutes and then start it again.

Sometimes this happens after a couple of hours of running my PC, and sometimes it takes days. It's not stable at all.

I've scanned my PC for viruses and errors but nothing seems to fix the problem. I've updated to the latest ATI Radeon drivers with no luck. Also someone posted that he has this problem and tried to format his PC but still the same.

I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (updgraded it to Pro long time ago by changing the BIOS).

If there is anyway I can fix this without replacing the card I would love to know how.

Thnaks in advance.

When surfing a month ago, 4 vertical bars appeared on my screen

thought it was a virus, but after downloading Ad Aware and various
other virusscanners, nothing happened. Finally I bought Norton

So, I re-installed windows XP, but to no effect. Then I erased my C

music, anime and other valuable stuff, but still the bars appeared!
After completely re-installing my computer the problem had remained!

But, I've found out that that the bars don't appear as long as I don't
install the driver of my videocard. Ati Catalyst. But then my internet
is all slow and crazy and I can't play any games without it. So I
downloaded the latest driver and various other, but still to no
effect. So what to do! My computer works just fine, but it really
sucks if your surfing or watching movies with 4 bars constantly on
your screen. I'm not a computerexpert, so don't asks me to look inside
my computer as I've never looked inside one nor know anything about
how it works. I've had my computer for 2 years and haven't had any

When I am in pictures folder for example, I see blank or black thumbnails.
When I right click and go to personalize, I can see black themes instead of actual pictures.

I tried almost everything.
- reinstalling video driver
- clearing thumbnail from disk cleanup
- resetting dwm.exe
- going into safemode and then restaring into normal windows
- I tried fixing shell by using "fixshell"
- clearing & repairing registry errors
- ran an error checker
- ran a file checker

I have Microsoft Office 2010 - I heard that it could be the issue, but maybe I am not right, anyway...

I noticed you're not running Aero. Click on last item, left side - "Troubleshoot problems with transparency...."

Office 2010 should not be a factor here. Public pics folder is empty - it should have sample pics in it.

They come and go at seemly random times, moving the mouse behind them, or changing the display behind the bars makes them go away temporarily. I've updated my graphics drivers, and never had this issue before upgrading from W7 to W8.1

I'm getting the black screen with movable cursor or KSOD (Black Screen Of Death) on Windows Vista.

What happens:
The system powers on.
POST
BIOS
Start windows normally
Windows splash screen
-> Black screen <-

What I can do:
I CAN enter BIOS and have reset the default settings.
I CAN press F8 to give me advanced boot options, but all options have the same result, apart from "Repair your computer".
I CAN load the "Repair your computer" option.
I CAN move the mouse around the screen.
I CAN press shift 5 times to get a dialogue to appear, but no control panel.
I CAN press the power button to shut down the system.
I CAN start up in safe mode, which is exactly the same, but with lower resolution.

I CANNOT seem to do anything else.

However, there are workarounds to accessing the hard drive:

I CAN use MSDaRT or the System Recovery Tool.
I CAN use the hard drive as an external USB hard drive on another machine.

What I've tried:
Startup Repair - Could not detect a problem.
System Restore - No restore points.
Windows Complete PC Restore - A valid restore location could not be found.
Windows Memory Diagnostics - No errors.
SFC Scan - No problems.
Stand alone system sweeper - No problems.
Hotfix Uninstall - Nothing to uninstall.

I also COULD do a partial or full "Packard Bell Recovery", which is essentially like reinstalling windows. I DO NOT want to do this.

I'm sure this is just a simple software issue real... Read more

I think I saw this post aver at Toms but I also think you gave some additional info.
I think what may be going on it during the switch from the windows low res video driver to the driver used in normal mode.

Since you can get into safe mode try to go to device manager.
Start|right click computer|properties|device manager.
Look in the display adapter.
Is there a yellow exclamation mark there?
Or is it showing the video that you know should be there?
Please post the video that the machine uses and or the PB model.

About a week ago the indicators which show volume, brightness and other function features disappeared. I can still turn these up and down, but don't have an indicator showing me the levels. I'd like to know why this happened rather suddenly? And how can I fix it?

Hi again,

Popping in for a quick tune up, my screen on occasion just goes white or displays grey bars, this usually happens while watching media content that streams online like a game or a youtube video.

Any Ideas?

Are those using Flash? Try toggle hardware acceleration for flash (right click youtube video screen and Settings). Or re-install it.

Hi, I've got an nvidia 9800 gt that i started using last month. It was fine until today;
There are bars of coloured pixels running down the screen, about 4 or 5. They also show roughly the same image (i.e. if i put my mouse on one bar, it appears on all the others). Computers working fine otherwise.
I updated my drivers a few weeks ago, and the card is also hot. Put my old graphics card in and it worked fine. After a while, I put my new one back in and it worked normally for about 5 minutes until the bars came up again.
Any suggestions? thanks

A:Help: Bars of dodgy pixels running down screen

Pixelation is typically a sign of a over heating or faulty video card. As you mention if works for several minutes before the issue begins, then possibly the card is not damaged or faulty (yet) and is just overheating. Ensure the heatsink / fan is properly attached and functioning properly.

About a week ago the indicator bar which shows what's happening with volume, brightness, and other functions disappeared, but the functions still work and can be changed.  Besides adding Skpye and a conexant audio device apps, and usual windows updates, I don't think anything has changed?  Why did the indicator disappear and how do I get it back?

Solved!
Go to Solution.

A:No on-screen indicator bars for brightness volume ...

Okay, so problem solved, though I'm not sure what I did exactly. On the off chance that the conexant audio app was the problem, I uninstalled it. When windows rebooted, i got a message that I had no audio device and that windows was trying to fix the problem. To confirm this, I tried to watch somethng on Netflix and sure enough, no sound. However, a moment later when i went back to Netflix, I had sound AND the indicator bars have returned, AND the audio device is on my laptop, showing that it was installed (could it be reinstalled?) today!

The only thing to do at that time is to reboot my PC and hope it will keep running as long as possible ... but it always ends up with my screen blocked.

I believe this is being posted in the proper topic.

I'm running Windows XP Media Center Edition on a HP Pavilion a1630n.

I've started taking an interest in security and done some work making my computer safe. However, today I lost the green volume indicator bars that used to come up when I adjusted the speaker volume from my keyboard.

On a HP laptop it is a software program called Quick Touch that handles this duty but I can't seem to find a comparable program for my operating system and model of computer.

A:Missing On-Screen Volume Indicator Bars

This is not likely tied to your efforts into security. If it is relivant, you still need a workaround.

Diffrent programs render things in diffrent ways. Video and sound do not often compete.

If a client based program(config bad) is not effecting your screen(can't fix it), it's probably time to uninstall the driver.

Try this:
Obtain the current driver set for your device.
Uninstall everything(program wear in Add/Remove..) related to your product. !!Don't Reboot!!

Remove the device from "Device Manager", selecting the "delete driver" option in the prompts.

Use your archived source to install a new driver environment.
Reinstall the programs that allow you acces to the device(profile programs)

Let me know how it comes out.

First off, Hello everyone! I am not new to these forums, although I was not really known. I used to be apart of it a few years ago and posted and helped out here and there when I had free time. But I made a new account, and decided to come back for some quick thoughts/help on my situation. I am a Technician already, but just stumped - although I have a few ideas.

Essentially, it can be random. Any given time, but it is NOT often. It happens maybe every other day, and if it does typically only once.

Basically, say I just click a random icon, or I am browsing the internet. It can happen. Let's say I am playing a game (gaming desktop), it can happen. It will even happen if I leave it idle overnight downloading anything, with both screens shut off.

To clarify - in case you forgot the issue in the title - I somehow manage to get colored bars across the screen and the computer haults, forcing me to power down and restart.

But here is the other thing. If this DOES Happen, I am unable to just press the Reset key, I have to power it down entirely and start back up.

My MSI Motherboard always has an A3 at the bottom right when there is no issues booting, although it gets an A2 if this error happens, and I simply just reset the computer.

Other than this, the computer functions 100%. I reinstalled Windows 7 as of recent, just because I clear things out off of my Solid State (Only carries my OS) every 6 months or so. Since my data is on all three of my other drives, internally.

Not sure I'm posting this in the correct forum, but I am running W7.

It started out this afternoon with the internet connection going out, for me, but not the rest of the household. The bars on bottom right had a yellow icon over it. It did however show that the network was connected to the internet.

I called Comcast and their reset the modum. Strangely, even though I have great connection now the bar icon never came back. It is the outline of a box with a red X over it, and a 3-prongued symbol on the left to it, similar to the plug symbol that indicates the laptop is plugged in.

Is this something I should worry about? Does it mean my laptop is dying?

Hello guys,

I've got a problem and I need your help!

When surfing a month ago, 4 vertical bars appeared on my screen
( http://www.geocities.com/lorenzopelswijk/verticalbars.html )! After
restarting they kept reappearing. At first I
thought it was a virus, but after downloading Ad Aware and various
other virusscanners, nothing happened. Finally I bought Norton
Antivirus 2005 and still it found nothing..
So, I re-installed windows XP, but to no effect. Then I erased my C
drive. Nothing happened. Then I erased my other drive with all my
music, anime and other valuable stuff, but still the bars appeared!

I've had my computer for 2 years and haven't had any
problems with it before. Does anyone know what the **** is wrong with
it? Please reply and deliver me of this evil... Read more
