I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 running Vista, and was unable to get ESPN360 to work. It has in the past. Through a series of technical support queries, it was recommended that I use "Driver Detective" to see that my drivers were up to date. I downloaded it and scanned my computer, and it reported that I have 25 out of date drivers. Before I spend any money, I wanted to make sure I wasn't throwing money away for a program that would cause more problems than solutions. Any feedback from someone who knows about this would be appreciated.

A:Driver Detective Software

Never mind. I just checked PC World and read the customer reviews. Sounds like it's just what I suspected, software that loads malware on your system and doesn't do a thing for your computer. Then, you get the runaround when you try to get help or a refund.

Hi all,

I have recently formatted my pc due to a virus, however my foresight isn't all that good and i didn't think about how i was going to get my hardware drivers back, you see my computer was given to me as a present by a computer programmer (who i no longer see) who built the pc himself, which is why there are no documents or backup / driver discs, only the xp disc was provided.

so now i have 18 (was 20 but i managed to find 2 of the drivers i needed online, woohoo!) 18 drivers missing or out-of-date. i downloaded belarc advisor to find out the makes and models of my hardware in the hope that it would be as easy as visiting the makes website and retrieving the drivers from there... i was horribly mistaken.

i now have driver detective which tells me exactly which drivers are missing or out-of-date, but i still have no idea how to get them all back. but one things for sure and that's that i won't be formatting my pc again any time soon!

for 2 days now ive been working on this problem with no result, so i havent just taken the easy way out and come straight here, and to be quite frank this problem is absolutly doing my head in now!

The computer still runs fine just extremely slowly and playing games on it is an absolute no-go! like counter-strike source one of the most unrequiring spec games in history is running at an average of about 7-9 fps now which not only is extremely frustrating but frankly unplayable!

i guess the most you kind people could ... Read more

Hi glossterline, the only true place to find drivers is Windows Update/ manf websites/ using the so called driver detectives could lead to trouble /payment for drivers unsuitable for your system ,Your first port of call should always be the hardware /software manufacturers website if that fails to provide a suitable driver go to Windows Update and search from there

hi

there are programs (eg PC Detective OR pc spy) that claim they will run invisibly in the background. They claim that they will send monitoring information back to another computer.

the question is, how can I tell if someone put this on my machine? and if so, how can I get rid of it?

.. and before I do, how can I tell what information was sent?

Can you tell me anything about this program? Is it legit? Is it good?

A:Driver Detective

Its legit, it can work, but its not needed. Because new drivers are available doesn't mean your system needs them. And some of the drivers this program and similar programs find are not always the correct ones or the latest ones. And you can always download and install drivers as you need by yourself for free.

Are you having any issues?

I ran across a file on my computer stored in notepad (WIN XP) with the confirmation information from the manufacturer and the pay pal transaction information of buying a two year subscription to disk detective, which I vaguely remember as a cleaning tool (registry, HDD, etc.). It doesn't expire until May of 2011, but I can't find any reference to it on my computer upon doing a search of all files and folders. I searched the internet and only found freeware file recovery tools. Any suggestions on how to find the company, so I can get the utility back since I paid for it?

Hello all,

I'm currently an intern at a company and I'm helping with the network. We're trying to do some consolidation and accounting for devices connected through one of our switches. My question is, how do I find out what is plugged into a certain port on the switch?

For example -
FastEthernet 3/46
I know that this is plugged into something (Workstation, Hub, switch, or printer)
I have a connection light meaning that whatever it is plugged into has power.

When I use the show mac-address-table command, nothing shows up as connected to this
port. Also, when I use show mac-address-table int fa3/46, all I get in return are multicast entries, no individual entry. I double check the status of the interface again, and I see that there is data being moved through that port.

Any ideas on how I can find out what is there?

I have a detective friend of mine that needs to see video files on an old 160gb IDE HD for a case hes working. The DVR it was in is toast and wont work so i removed it and put it in an external drive case and connected to it via USB. The drive does not have an assigned drive letter so explorer cant see it. Disk manager can see it in four partitions but the only option i can do to it is delete it and i cant do that. I installed Knoppix 7.0 and thought the linux system could see it and do stuff with it and it could. It only saw 2 partitions and showed some system files in one and no files in the other. The 2 partitions it saw were 34MB and 2.1GB. with the system files in the 34MB partiton. There is a 150+GB missing and i need to access and copy them. Any suggestions anyone? If someone is very knowledgable ill PM my phone number as i would like to solve this soon. Thanks in advance!

In my experience, Driver Detective or any other program like it, is usually malware. It is hard to trust some 3rd party application to find and install drivers for you.

Check out this forum post about Drive Detective : http://forums.cnet.com/7723-6138_102-298984/warning-dont-get-driver-detective/

I am a regular IT user and I get problems with drivers once a month which take me a whole night sometimes to manually solve. Is driver detective worth getting? Any help would be great!

A:Is Driver Detective worth it?

No. It could mess any system up very quickly just like any driver software.

There's nothing tricky about drivers. Visit your motherboard and graphics card manufacturer's websites every so often and install as they're released. If you feel like being extra nice, visit maker's site of mouse, network card etc...other hardware too.

Has anyone else encountered problems with Driver Detective? I've had two major problems. First, when my 2 years of updates ran out, instead of being charged for another two years of updates I was additionally charged a second time for the original software. Moreover, when I got to checkout, the price charged was considerably more than the price advertised . Secondly, I have recently had to pay a computer expert over $100 to remove some of the drivers selected and installed by Driver Detective because they were causing my computer to 'blue screen' on startup. His view was that if a driver is working, it's better not to replace it and that if it does need replacing it's better to go direct to the manufacturer's website. This has been my experience. Has it been anybody else's? The software manufacturer of Driver Detective has been unwilling to address the specific issues I have raised and now ignores emails about the problems.

A:Driver Detective problems

Driver scanner programs, especially the ones you have to pay for, are a rip-off.

Some of them are also notorious for displaying and recommending outdated or wrong drivers.

There's no need to update the drivers for your computer's devices if they're working properly.

If your computer does need original or updated drivers, get them from the computer's support site or from the vendor sites or from other reliable sites.

Second, there are many applications that can default to something like "connect to the internet when I turn on my computer." You may have either installed such an application, used one for the first time, or may have made changes to the application's options in error.

My son purchased this computer in early April 2011 to use mostly for gaming and Scratch. It was without a box, just the unit and keyboard. Good price, but maybe you get what you pay for...

Looking more closely at the computer's operating software configuration and dates of installation, I suspect that the computer has been "worked on" but not fixed.

Everything worked fine until he downloaded and played the latest release of Minecraft. Lots of BSOD from there forward with both Minecraft and Sims 3. (These, Scratch, and Internet Explorer are all he uses the computer for.)

We've downloaded and installed updated drivers for everything that we can find. Usually things will work fine for a couple of days after a new driver is installed, high fives all around! Then, the BSODs start up again, always during game play until recently when he's had a few while on the internet.

My son likes his computer very much, but wishes to resolve its problems!

Thanks in advance for your time and concern.

Greetings, once again...

This morning, after happily running my Windows 7 Enterprise Computer for 9 months, I was greeted with an "Installing Device Driver", followed by a "Device driver software was not successfully installed". Upon checking for more info, it turns out to be an unknown USB device.

Now, what is interesting is that I have added nothing to the machine...no new hardware at all requiring any new installation. Coincidentally, (I don't know if this has anything to do with anything, but also this morning), the DVI side of my dual screen setup wouldn't come on. This may be totally coincidence (I suspect it is), but it is odd that both of these things occurred at the same moment. I fixed that DVI situation. Still the unknown device appears. (I am wondering if Windows rebooted my system last night. I keep the unit on at night to run backups.)

My question is: Is there an easy way to identify which USB device is causing the problem. I have uninstalled the device, unplugged the USB's and re-booted but it always re-appears indicating the device is still plugged in. So, I am looking for some detective work. Is there anyway to identify which USB devices are up and working collectively? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm back on an HP laptop after having spent the last few years using a Dell Precision M4600 (which I miss already). I was hoping that HP would have improved their Driver and Software download site to provide more and better information to help users identify applicable drivers, but sadly it doesn't appear that much as changed. The website still leaves it to the user to determine which drivers and software apply to a particular computer. There are a number of cases where if you look at the revision history for a driver, for example, the Intel I217LM/V and I218LM Gigabit Ethernet Driver, there are versions of the driver available that are newer than the "recommended driver". Here is what's on the website: Version:1.00 S (13 Feb 2015)Version:12.12.80.19 A (8 Dec 2014)Enhancements- Provides improved support for Connected Standby.- Provided improved messaging when the system resumes from standby mode.- Provides improved ultra-low power (ULP) performance while the system is connected to or disconnected from an external audio cable.Version:12.12.50.7205 A (26 Aug 2014)Enhancements It's not obvious why the revision history would show newer versions of drivers if they are not applicable, but if they are applicable, why does the website not recommend the newest version, instead of the version from 26 August 2014? Both Intel and Nvidia have newer drivers available for the network adapters and display adapters, respectively. Does anyone get drivers for these... Read more

A:Drivers & Software Questions

To answer your question, yes you may absolutely download newer drivers direct from the manufacturer (Nvidia or Intel etc) website if you wish. The drivers that are on the HP website are the most recent ones that have been tested to work specifically with HP hardware, which is why sometimes you might see a difference in the versions.  I would definitely recommend running either HP Service Assistant or Softpaq download manager to help keep your drivers up to date. This will take a lot of the guess work out of whats needed and will save you time from having to keep checking the website for updates to drivers. You can even set the downloads to occur automatically if you wish! I hope that this helps to clear some things up and point you in the right direction. HELP, HELP,

I recently purchased a new ASpire (ACER) computer with VISTA already loaded. I am not able to use my printer (Lexmark) drivers are not yet available to run with VISTA and there is another software I use for personalized books, which is not compatible and they say it will not be for about six months.

What are my options; I'm told VISTA is the os of the future as far as Windows is concerned.

I feel like I should take it back and find a system with XP OR I was told I could load XP on my current system - I am not sure about this.

What are the pros and cons to the above?

PLEASE HELP.

Hi,
I am using a notebook which has windows 7 professional operating system on it. I use Windows XPMode to operate software applications that cannot run on a 64bit system. In general my system works fine in both Windows7 and XPMode, however, if I have to install
new software or drivers and if I get any updates for my computer it appears to cause problems whenever I next log on.
The computer boots up to the log on page, but my mouse and keyboard do not work, so I cannot access my log on profile or enter my password. Each time this happens I have to restore my computer to and earlier restore point just to access my device, but this
is not a good situation because I currently have to add new software for a particular application. I think that there is a conflict between the Windows7 and WindowsXP that might be causing this and am not sure how to go about resolving this issue. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
KFin.

I wanted to hear your opinions on what software you think is more reliable for updating the drivers. The reason I ask is because I am currently running two driver update programs but each of them are showing different updates for the hardwares. I read somewhere that drivers for 64 bit processors are difficult to find and those companies usually update the 32 bit.

I have a OneTouch meter and when I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 I waited a long time for a new cable, usb to serial comm, along with the drivers. I installed everything and it worked fine. Now I upgraded to Windows 8.1 and when I plug in this cable the device manager reports this device cannot start code 10. A device which does not exist was specified.

The question I have, is this a Windows 8.1 problem or a problem with the driver? I would think that a driver written for Windows 8 should work with 8.1?

I'm soon going to be assembling a new rig, with an AMD Phenom II x6 1090T CPU, verses the Athlon II x2 4400+ that I now have. Obviously, the chipset driver is different and will have to be upgraded also, but is there anything more that isn't automatically installed by the OS installation or Windows Updates?

A:Required Software/Drivers Upgrade?

Win7 installer is mostly driver-complete with newer arriving quickly via optional Windows Updates when you enable hardware auto-updating: Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware

Afterwards any drivers missing in Device Manager can be imported from the Support Downloads webpage for your model device.

I would not change out any drivers issued by the installer and updated by optional Updates unless performance problems point to that driver.

Back in the XP days I used to integrate all the drivers and other machine specific software onto the CD I used for installation however things have changed a lot since then so I was wondering how to do the same things with a Windows 10 USB drive?

If it makes any difference here is a list of that needs drivers/software post-install

Intel Rapid Storage
Samsung Magician
Intel Management Engine
Card Reader (RICOH)
Audio drivers/software (Conexant)

The card reader and management engine are just a bunch of drivers and some inf files for install but things like the Rapid Storage and Samsung Magician will need automatic calling with command line switches for a silent install.

It isn't a huge deal to me but this is a test system (ThinkPad T420s) that I wipe every couple of weeks to play around and it would save me 10 minutes or so each time if it can be done.

I have just installed Driver Agent Plus and it shows 13 out of date drivers. Should I rely on Windows 10 to update necessary drivers or should I use a 3rd party program? If the latter is Driver Agent Plus a good choice.?

A:Update Drivers using 3rd party software?

I do not recommend these updater services. If you're happy with the performance of your PC as it is, I would leave it.

I prefer to periodically go to the manufacturer's website manually to check for updates, then you're sure you're getting the right driver.

I also ran the registry cleaner in Piriform's CCleaner before restarting.

Using the recovery console, I have attempted chkdsk /r and fixboot.  No fix.  (I have not tried fixmbr)

I also attempted to use system restore through the recovery console.  I only have one recent restore date to try, which was made when I uninstalled the VIA update software.  I followed the steps provided here () and they did not help me.  I still get the BSOD when restarting.  Last known good figuration and safe mode also result in the same BSOD.

Windows Update usually has a good crop of updated drivers. In the update settings, start, All Progams, Windows Update, change settings.
Tick the button that says "Give me recommended updates....."
There is SlimDrivers which will search your hard ware and tell you about updated drivers, bbut doesn't do it automatically. It may suggest driver for non-existent hardware though. You will need to take a good look at its findings.

I had been having blue screen problems with my old Dell XP. The programs WhoCrashed and BlueScreenView implicated a few drivers of non-essential software as the culprits. I examined the drivers module in AutoRuns (by Sysinternals) and carefully selected non-essential software drivers for disabling of their autostart status by unchecking the box in AutoRuns. (I avoided hardware drivers, Microsoft drivers, and drivers for actual autostart programs.) Three times when I restarted after this limited driver-autostart disabling I got the STOP: 0X0000007B blue screen. I was in effect forced to use Last Known Good Configuration on the subsequent startups, and this restored all the autostarts I had disabled. To test what was going on, I shut down my system without disabling any driver autostarts, and the system started normally.

I tried disabling via AutoRuns only two files in the system32\drivers folders that were implicated in previous blue screens : wrkrn.sys (associated with Webroot, which after expiration had continued on my system as an on-demand scanner) and vvbackd5.sys (associated with a FarStone program which I had not yet chosen to utilize). I got the STOP: 0X0000007B blue screen again. After this in my frustration I shredded wrkrn.sys and vvbackd5.sys.

Really bad move. After this I continually get the STOP: 0X0000007B blue screen when I try to start the computer. On the next try I will get the menu that offers "Safe Mode" and "... Read more

Hello All

I have recently been given my brothers Toshiba Equium M70-173. It crashed soon after i got the laptop and would not turn on, a slightly more technical friend of mine managed to get it working but when it turns on the following message is displayed;

WARNING; immediately backup your data and replace your hard disk drive a failure may be iminent.
press F1 to contiune

after pressing F1 i am able to access the laptop, it is unable to staor information due to something being either corrupt or missing.

OK so after the waffle here comes the question,

I have bought a new hard drive, whilst in the shop i was told i would need the Toshiba product recovery cd/dvd & the drivers disc? now my brother has neither of these and i do not know how to go about fitting the harddrive if i need these discs once its been fitted.
doi need the discs? can i make back ups? if not where can i find them from/ are they downloadbale from the toshiba website?

just so its clear their is nothing on the laptop i need so it can be completley wiped.

thanks for any info or direction u can provide

Peter

Hello,

I've owned a Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 for a couple of years, and it has worked fine until fairly recently. I haven't used it in several months, but when I started using it again a few months ago, the video in the preview window and any video I record had an annoying flicker to it (about 3-4 flashes per second). It's also very jerky -- every few frames one of the previous frames pops up.

The only significant change I made to my computer during the time I wasn't using the webcam was upgrading my NVIDIA GeForce 5200 graphics card to an NVIDIA GeForce GT 430. I also tried installing the camera on a HP Pavillion dm4 laptop and an HP All-in-One 200 series (both running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit), and there was no problem with the video on either computer.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Logitech software, switching the camera between different USB ports, updating my graphics card's drivers and adjusting every setting on the webcam I could think of -- so far, nothing has helped. The lighting still flickers, and the video I record is irritatingly jerky. I've tried contacting Logitech multiple times, and they've been unable to help me -- every time I think they've fixed my problem, it comes back again when I restart the computer. I've also tried contacting NVIDIA, and they suggested completely uninstalling the Logitech software and doing a clean reinstall.

That's when I realized that I must not have u... Read more

Have you tried running the original installer program to see if it has an uninstall option?

Did you look through all the program names?

Have you used any "cleaning" programs that may have damaged your system?

Have a very trusty HP 7410 All-In-One scanner/printer that has worked well since I bought it I think in 2005.

But...I can not get the current HP printer/scanner drivers to uninstall/unload and/or can not get the current HP drivers/program system install download to correctly install. This is the only issue and can not get any reply from the HP customer support forums ?

Can I use a 3rd party scanner driver with the 7410 ? The default Windows 7 Pro system driver runs/works fine for printing...but I have no scanner driver for the HP while I can't get the HP scanner driver to install.

As far as the other garbage/stuff in the HP main install files...I can work just fine without these programs with comparable apps on my system now. Just really need the scanning features for both work/personal stuff !

A:Are there good drivers/scan software for HP printers out there

Which drivers did you try?

HP claims to have a full-featured package for the 7410:

Software & Driver Downloads HP Officejet 7410 All-in-One Printer - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

(360MB download.)

The third-party application Vuescan claims to support the 7400:

Hewlett-Packard OfficeJet 7400 Scanner Driver and Software

but it requires that some HP drivers be installed as well.

Good luck.

Rather than ask a question for a change, I want to point out an issue with the HP support website. If you go to the software and driver page your PC, after you specify your model name you need to provide the operating system you are using. When you  choose an operating system and version, the page may still say "No software or drivers are available for this product with the selected operating system." To get the site to search for downloads for your model when this happens, you need to click on the button labeled "Change". It's confusing. I think the button should be labeled "Search" or "Go" or "OK". "Change" does not make sense if you have not previously selected an OS. It made me think that HP support had taken down the drivers for my computer. I hope this post helps at least one person.
