Q: My Fan is running constantly on high

I have a DV7T-1000 hp
version 6.6.6002 service pack 2 build 6002
x86-based pc
bios hp f.12 8/28/2008
smbios version 2.4

My fan has recently started running almost constantly and loud. I have gone into msconfig and gotten rid of everything that doesn't need to run. The computer will do this when stationary with fan area hanging off of table exposed. When I sleep it or shut it, the light on the exterior of the computer (that says hp) stays on and the fan runs on high. I don't believe there is dirt in there. Around the same time, I noticed number lock and the keypad on the side stopped working.

could part of this be that I have never replaced the battery?

What else could it be?

I have run every spyware program known to man (malwarebytes, superantispyware, etc)

Hey guys, I am running Vista on an AMD Phenom X4 9150e with 4gb ram. My hard drive is constantly running and chugging away pretty good too, reading rather than writing i believe. My cpu and memory usage are quite high and my system is running relatively slow for doing simple things like opening a browser. I have attached a screenshot of the system resource monitor with basically nothing running but hijack this and a browser. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have run scans with malware bytes and adaware, as well as AVG which all come up clean.

Hi there, in the past week, I've started to notice my laptop behave more sluggishly and become quite slow when it would have otherwise handled the amount of applications open etc without any problems.

Scans with antiviruses over the past few weeks have flagged up removed so called viruses/ trojans , so I'm not sure whether this may have lead to my laptop suddenly becoming quite slow?

Since last week I noticed that the fan in the Dell e6220 is running almost constantly even while the the CPU usage is low (5-20%). The indicated temp is constantly around 65 degrees, which is too high for such low usage.
I'm unable to find out why this is happening, what I did:
- ran the Dell diagnostics at boot time, which doesn't show an error. However, it shows that pre-boot the CPU temp also gets up to and stays around 65 degrees, so the problem is not OS / usage related. I've let it sit for a while and when I flip my notebook, so the bottom side is also up in the air, it cools down a bit more to 51 degrees and the fan stops running for a very short time. The CPU temp shoots up again and the fan starts running again.- the fan is working properly and is going up in steps to max when the CPU temp goes up- I have never really checked how warm the hot air blown out actually is, but it seems to cool like it should- checked for dust inside around the fan and openings, but everything is clean- the heatpipe gets as warm as the heatsink, so the heat seems to be transported correctly (I thought that the heatpipe might not transport the heat anymore)- the heatsink gets warm, but is clearly not that warm as I can touch and keep holding it, so I'd say it's only around 40 degrees.
Would it then be the thermal paste connecting the CPU to the heatsink that has dried out? Where is the actual temp measured? This may explain the difference between the heatsink temperatur... Read more

Looking at the symptoms, it sound more to do with hardware. 
Usually in these situations, the heatsink fan assembly are to be suspected. 
If you haven't yet updated the BIOS, please do so and let us know if any improvement or changes.

1. My task manager shows my CPU% and Memory% usage are being constantly tapped out and I cannot find the reason.
 
2. I use Avasts Free version and nothing has come up on a scan.
 
3. I've also run RogueKillerX64, and the problems stopped for a few minutes.
 
4. Currently running CCleaner Free.

Recently I've noticed that my computer has been running very slow especially on start up. I looked at my task manager and noticed that my cpu usage is constantly around 85+ percent. The two things using it the most are svchost.exe and cmd.exe. I'm running windows 7 ultimate.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi -

cmd.exe = command processor - should not be running unless you have a cmd/DOS screen open. Is there one open on the Taskbar?

svchost.exe = Service Host - runs multiple system services. You will usually find > 12 of these

RIGHT-click on the svchost.exe in Task Manager and see what services are running under it

Also check the Resource Monitor - CPU tab -
START | type perfmon /res

Been happening for a while but its getting to the point where my computer is almost unusable at multiple times throughout the day.
 
CPU Usage bounces from 65-100% most of the time.  My machine sounds like its constantly doing working.
 
I've run malware bytes and ccleaner and have Ghostery running on Chrome.... doesn't seem to help much.
 
svchost.exe seems to be always working extra hard even though I track it back to system32.
 
Any help?

HP pavilion dv5-1235dx laptop always saying, "high cpu usage by internet explorer" even when I only have 1 window open...windows recently promped me to install recommended updates and since then it's been worse then ever.  Before that it would happen, but not as often.  Now it seems like everytime I'm on the web it says it.  Should I just do a system restore back to before I installed updates or should something else be done?

So to clear out what my hardware is, my core is an intel i3 2100 LGA 1155.

For a bit of background - A few months back, I encountered this problem that my fan started to malfunction. Though a few hours later, the fan started to work again. I used a flashlight to look into the CPU, and yeah it was spinning (Both of them at equal rates).

So onto the actual problem. I few days ago, I just got my PC fixed since my vid card malfunctioned. Fearing it was overheating, I downloaded speedfan and now constantly check my GPU temperature. However, what worries me now is that it constantly reads my CPU temperature to be around 85-91 Celsius. The frightening thing is, it's ALWAYS at that range. Even when I just turn my computer on despite it being in air-conditioning, the temp is always at that range. I also asked the guy who fixed my PC and said that it was a problem, but that 95 C' is standard for a PC that's been used for hours.

Since I'm kind of lazy to screenshot+upload, I'll just type out what it reads in Speedfan, CoreTemp, and CPU Thermometer.

System 39 C
CPU: 89 C
AUX: 44 C
SMIOVT (4-6) 39 C

CPU thermometer reads relatively the same, with a 40-43 C range.

It could be a miscalculation on the part of the on-die sensors, or a horribly failing cooling system.
I've checked Google for that chip's average temps, and they aren't supposed to be that high.
My CPU isn't a multi-core, so it by default doesn't generate much heat, but it's overclocked enough to make a toast.

Try disabling any 'Quiet fan' features in your mobo's BIOS, and check the temps.
For how long have you had this problem? Only recently, or since Day 1 of the assembly?

Try taking off all the fans and checking them individually. Check whether any fan is malfunctioning. If none is, it could be a case of bad case airflow. Or miscalculated temps.

Still, give me some more details on which programs you mostly run, how much load they give the CPU. I'll abuse Google for more information on your case.

Whenever I connect to the internet, my PC is showing activity on the web. But I don't have any programs that use internet open. Then I checked my usage report and it showed that I uploaded 536 MB and only downloaded 126 MB in one day!!! I never upload more that I need to. Then at the end of the month, the total uploaded was 2.6 GB, way more than the average in the past. I ran a virus scan and it didn't find anything. And then, while browsing the web, randomly a new tab will open with a strange URL, then it will forward to Bing. An example of this URL is: http://santadom.com/se.php?pop=1&aid=aGlkZGVu&sid=16154920&key=virus. If you can, please help!!! Thanks.

My computer started running incredibly slow on some webpages where ads are loading on the sides of the screen - concerning as these same sites did not have this issue in past months. I've noticed that the processes services.exe are constantly at a high cpu % and also iexplore.exe as well even if not doing anything on the computer (IExplorer is open though).

I've followed some of the threads and had no success. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated. I'm using Windows XP, Version 2002, Service Pack 3.

Hi, this if my first post, so please forgive me if I leave out any important details. I just came across this site after trying to figure out what was wrong with my girlfriend's computer. It's a Dell Inspiron 1521 running on Vista, and she has had it for about a year and a half now. However, soon after she got it, she has had trouble with it being extremely slow on startup and while running normally. CPU usage when doing absolutely nothing can range anywhere from 10-35%, and when actually doing stuff, it'll hit 100%. Currntly, physical memory is 1917 MB total, 1326 MB cached, and 12 MB free. There are currently 60 processes running for all users, which strikes me as a bit high.

I read some forums a few months ago and thought that perhaps the McAfee that came pre-installed was the problem, so I uninstalled that an installed AVG Free edition instead - which I think helped slightly, but it still feels extremely slow. I downloaded HiJackThis tonight and gave it a run after reading about it on some other sites, and so I'm attaching the log. I know there are some worms/Trojans among these, but I'm not sure exactly which ones I should remove and how I should go about removing it. I read the guide for HiJackThis, and it said to post on one of these forums if I had no clue I was doing, so here I am.

If there's any other information I can provide that would be helpful, please let me know, and thanks for your help in advance.

The hard drive transfer rates are truly out of this world -

The read speed is close to 1 Gbps...almost made it!!!

Now that I have built an impressive PC I am having trouble making it behave, it is a bit like a wild stallion, full of raw power, but quite frankly untamed!

Windows 7 (x64) is constantly crashing, it crashes about every 20 minutes, and it doesn't seem to matter whether the PC is doing work or not.

I have setup the RAM to use an Xtreme Memory Profile, which runs at 2133 MHz, which is not an issue for my RAM (as this is the RAMs) natural running speed.

*** At any rate I plan to test the RAM for a good 48 hours using MemTest to see if there are any issues on this front ***

I am thinking that there may be a conflict between the motherboards RAID chipset and the SSDs, in so far as perhaps the motherboard can't keep up with the SSDs.

If anybody else has any experience with these kinds of systems and has any suggestions as to why Windows is crashing can you please add your thoughts?

turn off the auto reboot
control panel /system/advanced/startup and recovery settings

I have a Toshiba Satellite  running windows 7. I got the computer from my father and had to remove a lot of malware and games. I wish i could do a factory reset but i do not have any of the factory disks. It seems like there are a lot of processes running and the physical memory is almost always at 100%. Then you can try removing all the junk files on it using CCleaner or BleachBit or something similar. If that doesn't help, I would recommend dual booting this PC with Ubuntu 14.04. I actually published a tutorial on doing that here:

Hi,

My PC is showing high data usage whenever I connected to Internet. It shows that the data flow is 10MB for upload and 12MB download in just 10 minutes even though I didnt run any program. This seems like abnormal to me. Sometime the download will slowed down as well. I've tried to scan by super antispyware, kaspersky and window defender but yet can get nothing from it. So yesterday when I was using my computer (running Windows 7) my physical memory suddenly got very high all the time, even when no programs are running. I have 4 GB of RAM and even when it's on desktop without any programs in the background it stays on about 1,5 GB usage. It's VERY slow when I run Photoshop CS6, goes up to about 3,8 GB usage. As as I said this problem occured yesterday. Never happened before. I tried searching for a few similar solutions here on Bleeping Computer using programs such as ComboFix, Rkill then scanning afterwards etc. but none of them works. Hi,
 
Not certain if I have a virus.  The fan on my computer is constantly running at a high level and I noticed several svchost sessions, at least 10 or more.  CPU usage is running at least 25%, constantly and will go higher but no lower than 25%.  I've shut down the computer and rebooted to no avail.  Fan goes up and svchost bumps up to over 10.  Not certain if multiple svchost sessions is a sign.

Hello,
I have a Vista laptop and the cpu % is running very high and IE 8 locks up alot. I've run various virus/spyware scans that found some instances but it hasn't fully done the trick. I've attached the HighJackThis log. Any help would be great.

I bought a BFG 7600GT and ever since the fan hasn't stopped working on automatic fan control, even when I'm just idling my computer. It stays at a constant 50-52 degrees celcius, and the fan keeps spinning hard.
When I manually slow down the fan with direct fan control in ntune, the temperature goes to about 54 degrees celcius.

i am running Windows XP. please help

Greetings, this just started today.
 
Windows 8.1 Dell Inspiron laptop here.
 
My Internet today is constantly saying that it is receiving at 7 Mbps, even when I'm not doing anything.  Looking in the Performance Monitor, the thing taking up the network is an svchost (netsvcs), but lists its address as "a23-216-11-90.deploy.static.akamaitechnologies.com" which I find suspicious.  There are other svchost.exe's; another one gives its address as "https-68-142-107-129.lax.llnw.net".  I am near that location geographically, but not sure what it is or why it's taking so much network. 
 
(While I was typing this the svchost taking up the most memory changed address to "cds1174.lax.llnw.net".)
 
Looking in the Details of Task Manager, I see many svchost.exe, but all are in C:\Windows\System32, so that appeared normal.
 
The Avast! icon in the tray is constantly spinning, which makes me nervous.  It just updated today, too.  I ran a Quick Scan with Avast! which returned no threats found.
 
Restarting the computer did not fix this behavior. 
 
I don't think this should be related to a Windows Update as I saw suggested somewhere else; a manual check for updates shows nothing is waiting.  But just in case:  also, looking through my Windows Updates, a couple of weeks ago, my Windows Defender said an update was cancelled.  Should I be alarmed by this; is there any way to make it update?  I use Avast! s... My laptop is in perfect condition. I haven't dropped it ever and I haven't even downloaded anything for a couple days now. Today when I turned on my satellite L300D, it started emitting a high frequency sound and as I am typing this right now I am still hearing it. How do I make the sound stop coming? The sound is coming from the "spine" of the laptop where the screen and keyboard are connected.

I have already tried removing the battery for a while and then putting it back in, nothing changed. I also tried using my laptop without the battery while it's plugged in but still nothing.

What I did find was that when I adjust my screen brightness, the sound either gets louder (if I increase the screen brightness) or quieter (if I decrease the screen brightness). Even with the screen being as dark as can be, I still hear the sound.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

I have a high quality HP computer with a terabyte of memory using Windows 7 and the PC is about 7 years old. My computer fan has been running too constantly and loud for months! I cleaned it once and then again more recently including taking the fans out and cleaning them completely and replacing them. The CPU runs very high, especially if I try to play games on facebook or anything that may require extra stress on my graphics drivers. I tried to update drivers and spent money to have this done using Driver Boost Pro, only to be told it was a very minor fix and my computer would need another 200-300 dollars worth of work done! Including an Infection Sweep, a One Time Repair, and a Tune Up. I do not have that kind of money right now and I am becoming more adept at doing more and more for my computer and would appreciate any useful advice that could help me to take care of these problems as much on my own or with free...completely free....programs that could help. I was also told to lower the number of Processes running and have done so but apparently more needs to be done. Thankyou for your help and I hope to hear back soon. A:Screen flickers, fan runs constantly and very high CPU I need advice for a free fix!

This works for me, although some would contend that defragging isn't necessary as much as I do it:

1. Defragment daily using a auto schedule
2. Run CCleaner daily to remove temporary internet files and empty browser caches using a auto schedule
3. Backup daily to guarantee the safety of files on the computer
4. Keep the documents folder (My Documents for most users) neat and clean, so there aren't a large amount of unnecessary files
5. Clean the inside of the PC every few months or so

*It helps to run Malware scans every once in awhile and also to run diagnostic scans of hard drives and RAM memory. The RAM test is very long (12-24 hours), and it can only be run using a boot disk outside of Windows. The hard drive tests can be found for free at the internet site of your hard drive's manufacturer. Good tool to have for catching problems before there is a full hard drive failure that causes files to be unretrievable...

Otherwise, you may have some adware on your PC. Someone will come along to help...

Hello everyone, I've been having a very weird problem recently, in which I BELIEVE is involving high physical memory usage. Sometimes I will be doing things such as playing a game, or watching a stream, and my computer will run fine for a little while. But at random times, my computer will majorly slow down and sometimes even crash. If it doesn't crash, sometimes it will get so slow to the point where I have to hold down the power button and manually shut it down. Every time my computer slows down I notice it is using a TON of physical memory. It's actually happening right now. My computer is going very slow and it's using 6.22 GB memory out of 8. There are no big programs running right now, so I don't understand why it's being slow. I hope someone is able to help. Thank you for taking the time to read this!

Update: I just tried to open chrome, and the computer froze completely. It would not unfreeze. After leaving it frozen for a minute or two, the screen went black. This is becoming very frustrating.

It seems I have had some lag of late, and I thought it was due to a loose connection in my CD-RW....but since I have completely removed the CD-RW, as it seemed to stop the lag for a day or so, i continue to get the same thing over again...CPU constantly running resulting in lag

It isnt spyware/or a virus, as I've check into that pretty thoroughly...

To me, it sounds like the CPU is constantly running and is somewhat loud during gaming...causing lag...
Anyone's help would be appreciated?

right click the task bar and open the task manager, click the processes tab and look at the columns for both CPU and for memory usage. Use the msconfig.exe to check what apps are starting up with bootup too. or try this; http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

My CPU usage is always running at 50-55%, which it wasn't doing a week ago. When I check the "Processes" tab under Task Manager, there isn't any application/browser/programs that are taking up that cpu usage. I also ran a virus check with TrendMicro and it came up with nothing. I'd like to be able to know what is running in the background and stop it. It's making work related programs and browsing more slow.

The fan has been a problem the past several months and has increased in the past few days. If I do anything remotely intensive, the fan starts running which really slows down the laptop to the point where I literally can't do anything. Any solutions?

That is usually caused by the vents that allow air to be drawn over the CPU heat sink being clogged with dust   Once the CPU gets hot, the system will slow down, and eventually just shut down to protect itself from a meltdown.     I would try using a vacuum cleaner hose and a can of computer cleaning air to blow/suck out the dust and see if that helps.     I that still fails, you may have to remove the base cover (see page 34 of the Lenovo S41/U41 Hardware Maintenance Manual) and clean the fan manually.     In rare case the heat sinks fail, or the thermal heatsink compund beween the CPU and the heat sink cracks and fails to transfer heat to the heat sink efficiently, mut most likely you will find the system is full of dust. Lenovo used to have a fan cleaning program in the Lenovo Energy Managment software, but I think it removed it for some reason.    It is supposed to run the fan backwards and forwards at high speed to try to clean the dust, but if it is really plugged, it probably will not work. Good luck. Lenovo S41/U41 S41-35 S41-70 S41-75 U41-70 Hardware Maintenance Manualhttps://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/lenovo_s41-35_s41-70_s41-75_u41-70_hmm_201503.pdf

Hi, i just got my Lenovo 501S-14IKB today. Everything is working fine, its super fast in comparison to my old laptop. Only problem is, that the fan seems to run all the time and is making noticable noise. the temperature of the cpu aer all in the range of 20° only the hd was at 34. so normally that are not temperatures where cooling is needed. If i let the notebook idle for 2 min it goes dead silent but starts again even if i just scroll down a homepage. And even if i start programms whicht take more resources, the fan does not get louder. Is there anyway to controll the fan? Help would be really appreciated, Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english

Hi, posted yesterday re the fan on my HP running all the time, dusted the fans as per the reply but it's still blowing.

Someone who came over last night looked at a performance table somewhere on the computer and said that alot of the programs were running 99% thus setting the fan off. He didn't know any more and I can't remember how he got to that info? Help please!

Over the past couple of days my laptop has declined in its speed and is constantly running at 100% process. I have done a virus scan with AVG and have found no results that have caused a threat to my system and i have tried to delete a few program files but to no success. Hello,Pasting in contextual information from another topic ~ OBHere is a little history.March 30th A Windows problem first became evident as the CPU spiked to 100% and on reboot, Windows would not boot up stating it could be a hardware or software problem. At that time I thought it was the motherboard and had it swapped out because the error I had was different but the symtoms were the same prior to the system not booting.April 6th got the laptop back from HP and put in my HD to boot from. It worked for a day and then the CPU spiking issue was found, only this time with no failure to boot.Since that date I have tried to isolate the issue but to no avail. I have tried various restore dates and images, as well as manipulating the data on the master image (delete WoW before issue is active and reinstall it from scratch). None of it has worked.My latest attempt was to restore from my oldest image available [the other night]. It was left restoring and hasn't been tested yet. I am not sure if the "issue" will be visible on it. Hello All,

I wanted to provide an update to this. I blew away the image last night hoping to restore from the factory settings and get it up and running. That worked for about an hour before the symptoms came back. That normally leads me to think that there is something on my home network that is passing a virus along before I can patch windows, but to add further confusion to this topic, the same situation has occurred on my work laptop. Both are HP NC6400. That is the only similarity. The work laptop is running XP and my home machine Vista. I had both machines rebuilt and the work one without ever stepping into my house exhibited the same issue on a fresh build. Is it possible that there is something resident in the BIOS of these machines, or that a Virus screwed up the CPU's?

In Windows Task Manager, under the Performance Tab, my CPU is showing at 100% permanently. I've tried closing down some of the high runner processes but nothing makes any difference.

I've run several cleaners (RegCure, CCleaner etc) but again nothing makes any difference.
My PC is constantly freezing, hanging, sputtering and is becoming unusable.

I also noticed that when I manage to perform a normal shutdown, everything goes normally BUT my screen stays on, and the power button light remains on, but I can hear the drives and fan stopping. I then have to perform a manual powerdown by holding the on/off button for about 8-10 seconds.

My machine is a 3.06 GHz Pentium 4 Compaq Presario, 18 month old, O/S is Windows XP Home Edition, with SP 2.
Anyone out there have any ideas?

I have a Dell.. with Windows Vista. The computer sounds like its constantly running even when I am not doing anything on it at all. I have scanned with Malware Anti bytes. I have mcaffee anti virus on the computer. when I do my task manager there is dwm.exe that uses 43,560K memory , explorer.exe uses around 53,800K, and iexplore is using 43,450K , I have 58 proccesses running, CPU usage is 52% and Physical Memory is 44%, that is with me just on here typing this, with mcaffee running...is that normal? I have looked up pretty well everything in that list and it all seems normal. I have included a HiJack this log to see if there is something in it can someone please let me know. I would appreciate it.

I have a Compaq Presario PC, windows XP W/SP2 installed. Model # SR1503WM. The CPU constantly runs whether computer is being used or not. I have checked the task manager and it shows CPU as 0% and compaq connections agent as the only application running. I have 1.24GB of RAM installed. I have Norton installed and AVG and have checked for spyware and computer seems to be clean of any. The unit seems to be cool as it is not hot when felt or air from it, and also is free of dust clogging vents and inside of unit. What could be the problem. It is 2 years old this month. The noise runs me crazy after a while, thanks!

Hi,

I have two computers, one computer runs smoothly at a cpu level of around 10%, and has less RAM, hard drive space, and runs more cpu related tasks, it has a duel core 2.4, my other computer, however, runs at 100% all the time, no matter how many processes I kill in tskmgr.exe, it runs incredibly slow, it has a duel core 2.2.

I've ran malwarebytes, CCleaner, registry cleaner, defrag, and it still runs at 100%, it didn't used to do this, it's happened for at least two months, but it keeps getting worse.

I am using Windows xp Home Edition, which recently started running VERY slowly. Task Manager tells me that iexplore is running even though I never use IE. The resulting heat means my laptop sounds like it is trying to take off. I have tried removing .xml files from indexing as has been suggested on my multiple searches. Didn't help at all. Somehow turning off the process if possible is also not a solution in my opinion.

Looking in Event Viewer, I noticed a great many of the following 'Warnings' from the 'Search' source "The protocol host process 8472 did not respond and is being forcibly terminated {filter host process 10000}." The numbers involved change frequently.

Any ideas as to how I can fix this? It's driving me mad. I have attached a screenshot from the process tree area of Process Monitor, it is perhaps relevant.

Have taken delivery of a new desktop pc and it is ok except for the fact that the fan cranks up to (a noisy) full speed when pc switched on and carries on like this until it is turned off.
I queried this with supplier's help desk but they assured me that this is normal?

I am running WinXP Pro SP3 and I have had an ongoing issue with my rundll32.exe suddenly spiking to 50% and then fluctuating around there. I use all the usual suspects (Spybot, CC Cleaner, Avira Antivir, Malwarebytes) and my system is clean of viruses and malware. I have prepared a HJT log file, a task manager screenshot and a system32 screenshot. The rundll32.exe icon is not the standard white icon or icon with a symbol, but looks more like a piece of paper. My computer has been acting really crappy lately.
Really slow
I can get on the internet but the links take forever or the no response
cpu is running at 100%
We get a microsoft no response and have to reboot or if you control alt delete it says that there is nothing it is working on even though you have click on a program. Programs freeze constantly and take forever to get to another excel sheet as an example.
I have norton internet sercurity, I have done iolo system mechanics 6
we have run our adware
I have run pc pit stop on the computer which said it found trojans. Are all my problems caused by these and can you suggest a product to take them off.
If it is not a trojan that is slowing down the computer what other suggestion do you have for me. I really don't understand what is making the cpu run a 100%

Have run Spybot, CCleaner, Malwarebytes AntiMalware and defragged - no problems found. As of the last week or so the cpu load is almost always 50%, sometimes it flicks up or down 1 or 2%. Only other problem I seem to be having is that Windows media player network sharing has not been working with my xbox 360. It tries to access the connection and keeps timing out. I just bought a new toshiba pc i got it last thursday and when im just sitting at the desktop the fan just kicks into high gear constantly running and making noise and then after a few minutes it stops but it also starts back up making the same annoying noise minutes later is the fan suppose to be working so constantly? And the cpu temperature is constantly at 30 degrees or higher is that normal? even when i turn on the pc after its been off for a few hours its still in between the same temperature range that i mentioned earlier. also for example on this pc if i have firefox open and i have photoshop open or any other programs the screen brightness changes slightly dimmer when i switch from one program to another on its own. Im not sure should i take it back im thinking about doing that i cant take the annoying fan and the automatic switching of the screen brightness upon switching application windows is a little strange.

I am running Vista Home Basic. I have good computer knowledge and skills although certainly not an expert. I can't understand why I am constantly getting the low C: memory warning. I store all pictures and music, etc. on a separate hard drive, and I have carefully gone over my program files and uninstalled any that didn't seem worthwhile. I have a 70 gig hard drive which seems like lots and is more than any computer I've owned before. Sometimes it seems that if I delete files, etc. to clear up memory and the next time I come back to my computer I'm out of memory again. I often get the "could not complete back up due to insufficient memory" notice. I'm unclear on what is being backed up and if this is part of the problem.

I have 3 GB of RAM and the Virtual Memory is currently set at 3242 MB

Hi and welcome to vista forums

WE could use some info on your computer like how much memory you have, but I think you are running low on "virtual memory". Virtual memory or page file is set in the system control panel>advanced settings. Dependant on the amount of RAM you have it should be set for between 1 and 2 times the amount of ram. If you run out of RAM more and more things are stored in the page file untill it too is out of space. thats when y ou get the low memory warning.

If you like I can walk you thru the settings and where to change them, just tell us how much ram you have.

I just received a new HP 22-b052 AIO yesterday and as soon as I started it up, I could hear the fan on the left side (or right side from the back) constantly running. The sound from far away is unnoticeable but when I'm in front of it, it is loud. Is this normal for HP AIO (All in One)? I called HP tech support and spent hours recovering and reinstalling BIOS, running hardware tests but to no avail.  Also, could I replace the fan? Is this PC customizable, would I be able to switch out the mobo and CPU (and of course fan)?

Can anyone off assistance? I have a dell laptop and a friend of mine was using it over the weekend. This person was accessing 'myspace' and 'myspace im' which I think surfaced this problem. When I started up my computer I got this STOP error: IRQL_NOT_GREATER_OR_EQUAL

So I inserted my windows xp pro OS disc and tried to re-install. Well now, the egg timer is constantly running when I start up the system and when I look at the performance, it's at about 45% when I have nothing running. And sometimes the STOP error comes up at start up.

Older Fujitsu Lifebook N series notebook with Vista. Recently fans (2) both seem to operate at top speed as soon as the computer boots up, even from a cold start. Tried installing speedfan but it triggered a BSOD when scanning the hardware every time I tried to use it. Then tried Core Temp, that wouldn't install either. No BSOD, said something was blocking it, but I disabled Adaware and AVG. Laptop appears to operate normally except for the fan noise. Attached the hijackthis files. TIA.

ps...should have mentioned I took it apart, cleaned the fans (not that dirty), and re-pasted the CPU and heat sink.

Recently started noticing that my laptop is being heavily taxed while at idle (I'm not doing anything). Looking in the task list, I found services.exe, svchost.exe and wscript.exe all floating around 15-20% of CPU capacity. Hi i mentioned this earlier but i didnt solve the problem, im running my desktop windows vista machine, and the harddrive never stops working, it sound really bad, i searches for this and someone said that you coult see what whas happening in the task manager with io reads and other io activity tabs turned on, the tasks that showing the most activity was windows tasks and the highest is avg with over 20-40k reading score i will remove avg and se if it fixes it but othervise, what should i do?

Have slight problem. Want to set upone of my own photos as desktop background.
Have a couple of my own photos saved in My Pictures, under My Documents.
Worked briefly. Now, when I boot up, my A drive runs constantly, until system comes
up completely. But, as soon as I click on anything on desk top, A drive starts running
again, apparently searching for needed background file?
How/where do I save my own photos for desktop background so that A drive isn't running all the time?

I'm running a Gateway 1GHz, 40GB HD, CDRW, Iomega Zip drive and Windows ME.
If I keep a Zip disk in, with photo I want on it, Drive A is quiet.
Problem began when I tried to change desktop background.

Appreciate any information!!

Over the last couple of weeks I have noticed that my notebook PC (DELL Inspiron 700m) hard drive has been running more or less 100% of the time the machine has been powered on. Task Mgr/Processes indicate that "msiexec.exe" is running at 99 and CPU usage is at 98-100%.
At the same time, I have also had several incidents of "about:blank" pages in IE (6.0) opeing themselves automatically. During a 30 minute period last night a total of 8 pages opened (I had 8 IE windows opened automatically).

1) are these two issues related?

2) I have checked that "Windows Installer" in Systems is set to "Manual".

3) I also try to turn off the msiexec.exe in "Processes", but it turns it self on within seconds again.

4) I have run multiple spyware software applications trying to find and delete the cause of the "about:blank" problem, which I think is a browser hijack, but to no use. I've run Webroot's "SpySweeper", SpyCatcher and F-Secure's "BlackLight" and Trend-Micro's online "HouseCall". Each of them found malware, but didn't solve the problem.

5) I am using Microsoft OneCare with Defender as my antivirus and malware protection.

I'm at a loss and unless someone has a solution I don't see any other way but to reformat in order to solve the problem.

I am using a HP Pavilion dv6 with an Intel i7-2630 QM, 6 GB RAM and AMD Radeon 6770M GPU (along with Intel Graphics Card). In the past few days, anytime I open a program, such as Mozilla, Chrome, Spotify, the computer's fans kick on. This has never happened in the past. Usually I have to run a video through the browser or play a game for the fans to turn on. The fan turns on when on AC power and when on battery. When this happens, the CPU usage is around 5-7% with 40-50% RAM usage (no change from the past). I am not sure why all of the sudden the laptop's fans are turning on. I have looked at the processes and do not see anything out of the norm and the average temp of the CPU's is about 51-54 C. I have not installed any new software in the past several months. Any input or ideas about why this may be happening would be greatly appreciated. I use Process Explorer and Core Temp to monitor my computer as well as Norton 360 as antivirus software. Thanks.

Long story of what's happened so far:

So about a week ago I was on firefox and using google search. I scrolled through the page and my firefox window closed. internet explorer opened for a brief second, it then closed itself, then a program called XP security 2011 downloaded itself and started running a virus scan. I just assumed it was a fake (I've had this sort of thing happen on other computers in the form of Spy Sheiff and something else years before). My internet was hijacked and I couldn't open any page in any browser. So I turned the computer off, ran malwarebytes anti-malware in safemode and it found a few things. I deleted everything that came up and I turned the computer back on in normal mode and I ran into a few other problems.

While the internet now worked, whenever I tried to open (mostly) any other program, it would ask what program I wanted to open it with (the list of the default programs). After a while of searching, I came across a registry fix for it, downloaded it and it worked.

Some point after that though I just ran more scans in Malwarebytes, and whenever I boot the computer normally it runs super slow. I pin pointed this to services.exe using the task manager but from what I read it seems that it's a genuine file that has malware attached to it. It's hogging every bit of CPU that isn't being used by everything else. If I run the computer in safe mode it might run at 80-90% which is definitely better then 100, but it&... Read more

Hi , i recently upgraded my laptops hard drive to a Samsung 840 evo 500GB SSD. Whilst i've noticed a massive improvement in performance there is one little annoyance , the fans on my laptop are constantly going on and off is there a way to combat this and is this a common problem ?

Not a common problem no, if anything after fitting a SSD the fans should come on less as a SSD gives off no heat at all compared to a regular spinner.

Did any bios settings change when you installed it? I would have a look in the bios to see if there are any settings for fans etc.

There's quite a few things that can have that effect. Let's start simple and work up.

How old is the hard drive?

I would check the overall space of the hard drive, good practice to have at least 20% free. The HD may also be fragmented, you can check the status of both of these from the disk defragment application. If the HD space is lower then 20%, you may want to delete temporary files from Disk cleanup.

Next I would check the RAM and Virtual memory amount, it depends on what system your running, but a good baseline is anywhere from 2gb to 4gb of ram, and 1.5x your current ram amount = virtual memory. You can confirm these from the Task Manager, under the Performance tab.

If those come up clean and fine, you may want to do a quick virus scan. I personally recommend Malwarebytes, you can find the most current version from their website at Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware download

From my knowledge the fan activity depends on notebook usage and everything is controlled by fan table which is stored in the BIOS.
The fan table contains information how the cooling module has to run in different situations.

While gaming, the CPU and GPU produce more warmness and this need to be cooled down. Therefore the cooling fan has to rotate faster.
But I?m wondering why the fan does not run slower after the game has been closed.

However, I would recommend you to disconnect the AC adaptor and to remove the battery and to press and hold the power button (30 sec would be good enough)
Then power up the unit, access the BIOS and set it to default, save the change and reboot the notebook.

Furthermore I would recommend you to check the windows power plan settings.
In advanced settings it?s possible to change the cooling mode as well as the max CPU performance.

To whomever may be able to help. My machine has been running at 100% capacity constantly. It started a a few days ago after visiting a story at "knowyourmeme.c0m" After I pulled up the story my machine started running at capacity and caused me to reboot. Once I rebooted when it came back up it went through SCNCHEK because it said the directory was "Dirty" I'm not able to complete the GMER scan and I don't have access to a windows CD I've attached what I could complete and pasted the DDS below.

I recently installed McAfee Virus Protection on my computer. My computer runs all the time for no apparent reason. When I went to my add/remove programs to see what was on there I get the following: c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe file missing message.

Can anyone help me figure out what is going on - I suspect a registry issue of some kind.......as well as a possible virus.

I saw other threads on this issue, but their solutions do not work in my case. I have iexplorer.exe start up automatically and constantly running in the background, while consuming a lot of capacity. I have uninstalled the real internet explorer, but in vein. There is a folder created with iexplorer.exe. I can not delete the file and when I rename it, a similar file is created during the next boot.

Spybot and Ad-Aware do not find anything.

A:Iexplorer constantly running in background

After trying everything within my competence, I solved this by reverting to an image of the boot disk I made well before the problem started.

iexplorer (or whatever it is) does not run in the background anymore and the annoying pop up ads disappeared.

It works, but I would still be interested to know how to solve this if I would not have had a back up of the boot disk.

Please help me figure out what this is. Sometimes the hard drive just starts running and stays running for a couple of hours. This makes my laptop unuseable. I figured it was a program running but the taskmanager shows no applications running or processes that are causing this. One time when this happened I got a message all of a sudden that said Operating System Not Found. Shut down with power button and restarted. On restart the windows fixer came up which I used but no problems were found. Any help would be appreciated. Let me know if I can provide more info that may help solve. Hoping to get some guidance with an issue I am working on with a friends laptop. I was asked to clear adware as it was affecting performance of the laptop and also fix an issue with Windows installer.

The Adware was pretty easy to get rid of completely but the issue with the installer is proving to be a real stinker. It seems anytime a Microsoft application is launched, Windows Explorer, MS Word, IE Explorer the installer launches briefly then disappears.

Checking the event log shows an Event ID 1001: Detection of product '{91CA09409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9}', feature 'HandWritingFiles' failed during request for component '{456D1A62-*DC1F-45C2-910F-FCDB0DCE4562}

I've done a bunch of looking around and can already state the users all have correct permissions per Microsoft support article, KB911682. I'm at a loss on this one.

Also all the shortcuts for Office 2003 are not operating properly and trying to execute repair from the application results in an error indicating the action cannot be performed because the application is not installed. I can confirm Microsoft Office IS installed properly. The only way to launch the app is to do so by double clicking winword.exe directly.

Any thoughts? Appreciate the help!!

Would it be better to uninstall and reinstall office 2003 or remove and reinstall the windows installer??

Dear Forum Members,
Through the absolute cheapness of Microsoft, my uni only provided me w/ an update copy of W7 that I had to install over a full version of Vista. I have 1.5gb of ram and have turned all the options down for performance (e.g. looks like Windows XP.lol) and have a 7200rpm WD HD.
Here is the thing. I did a test install on my old drive (5400rpm) that was running XP Pro. W7 ran smoothly and the fan hardly ever kicked on as I do minimal tasks and have a stepped processor. When I did a clean install on the 7200rpm drive, everything was also fine. However, as I couldn't register my upgrade copy I had to install over Vista. This is where the problems started.
The computer is noticeably slower than when I did the clean install. Also problematic is that the fan seems to constantly run even when the computer is performing no task, not even word processing or internet surfing. I do not care about the noise (in XP it just used to kick on real loud every now and again), I just want to make sure that my hd/cpu isn't getting fried. It seems to indicate a problem.

Any suggestions?

Hi,

I desparately need help. My Sony Vaio HD is constantly running, regardless of any programs being used. Internet access is slow and even opening any documents or programs is very sluggish. I've run Norton and gotten back no viruses. 50 GB of the 80GB hard drive are free. A HiJack This report is below. Hello!

I have something that is constantly running on my laptop. I've been reading here for several days and have done the following but still something running. Every time I click on a button try to open something, i get see a (Not Responding) message in the title bar; i wait, and sometime wait & wait, then eventually it opens.

So here's what I've done so far... uninstalled McAfee, I donwloaded & ran MPCR.exe twice, I installed Microsoft Security Essentials (ran a full scan, found nothing). I also uninstalled LOTS of unused software, went to the msconfig startup tab & unchecked things I knew I didn't need to be started automatically.

Hi there.
I'd love some help from you guys into getting to the bottom of this problem.
For about the last 3-4 days my PC has been running slowly. I've been unable to do any online gaming due to this.
Explorer.exe seems to be always running at around 50% usage.
I've tried running AVG anti-virus , Malwarebytes, SpyBot and Ad-aware. The problem still persists.
I use ZoneAlarm firewall and also use Spywareblaster.

hi
recently my computer has been freezing at several different points during the start up.
then it will freeze once it is up and running a few times before it will run for a bit longer, then freeze again. it will usually take me about 20 resets to get it going...like something isnt getting going for it to run???

any ideas?

Please note this is a "general" trouble shooting guide for random reboots. If it does not apply or you have already done it then please skip and move to the next section. (The ram test and hard drive test can be ran without booting into windows, they run from a floppy or cd rom)

The best all in one trouble shooting disk that is a dos bootable (from a cd rom, you do not need to boot into windows) Just throw it into the CD rom and start using the test.

Microsoft says whenever a computer freezes or reboots (crashes) you need to run chkdsk
Start, my computer, right click on your hard drive, select properties, select tools, error checking click "check now"(chkdsk).
(General maintenance can save alot of headaches, see link below for general maintenance)

the fan on my power supply for my desktop is constantly running. I took it to the geek squad before and they replaced it. when i brought it home and hooked it up the fan constantly runs on the power supply. does that mean they stuck the wrong one in. or is the one they claim to have stuck in bad. oh and the only reason i went to the geek squad was my pc was under warranty.

Be worried when it doesn't,be happy it is.
