configuration update in freeze

Q: configuration update in freeze

When I got on my computer this morning..the screen said Configuration updates - Stage 3 of 3 -
0% completed....

It it stuck there. It does not complete, I've tried restarting, upplugging everything, it just goes right
back to this same screen.. it then goes to black like it is going to restart...then this same screen
comes up again.

I have no idea how to unfreeze this or stop this download which is obviously frozen.

any suggestions would be appreciated...going nuts.

I'm setting up a Quake3 Freeze Tag server. In Linux.
Freeze Tag: http://www.planetquake.com/freeze/

I want to make it instagib, meaning it's rail-only, unlimited ammo, one-hit-one-kill, and there's no items in the maps (no armor, health, ammo...).

How is this configured? Google has been little help
Also, can anyone recommend a good remote administration utility? Quake3Control shows promise, but the download page is all broken and I cannot find any mirrors.

Turns out you need a mod called freezeDT to do this.

I have a problem trying to install Windows 2000 Pro ever since I got my new motherboard: After it reboots to inspect my computer's hardware configuration, it freezes. It does not respond to any of the function keys. I've unplugged all the cards on the motherboard and the CD-ROM and there is no effect, so none of this hardware seems to be causing problems.

I have a Gigabyte 7IXE motherboard with 128 MB DIMM. Windows 2000 Pro install and ran perfected on my old, but now defunct, board.

Thanks.

I am trying to update from Windows 10 OS Build 10586.589 to the Anniversary Update but my computer freezes at 1% progress. I have tried everything I can think of including: Unplugging all extra SATA drives except my main SSD, unplugging my wireless network adapter, unplugging all USB devices (even mouse and keyboard), removing old drivers and updating outdated ones, and installing the update through a USB flash drive. It always gets to the same part and freezes until I shutdown my computer and lose no data.

You can see pictures of the frozen screen here: http://imgur.com/a/PseoH.

Hi, this is my first entry to this site so bare with me if i mess it up

a few months ago i let my sister borrow my laptop. when i got it back the next day i turned it on and it started up as usual but before it went to the desk-top it came up with-

configuring updates: stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete
please do not turn off your computer

this is nothing new but it stays on 0% for 1/2 minutes then restarts, goes back to this page and does the same again, round and round in a loop.

i left it running like this for a couple of days to see if anything happened but still the same

does anyone know how to fix this?

A:update configuration HELP

Possibly, your sister powered down the laptop during updates. Try system restore from recovery console:If you have Windows XP CD... (if you don't have Windows CD, scroll down)1. Boot from the CD.2. When the text-based part of Setup begins, follow the prompts. Select the repair or recover option by pressing R:3. You'll find yourself at this screen:4. Once you are at the Recovery Console you will be given at least one choice of Windows installations. Normally the choice you want is the number 1 choice. Click the number 1 key at the "top" of the keyboard and click enter.NOTE: at this point your numbers to the right of your keyboard are turned off. If you insist on using these keys for your numbers remember to hit the Numbers Lock key before clicking a number over there or your computer will automatically reboot and you will have to wait through the previous steps to get back to the console. 5. You will be given a message asking for the administrator password. Unless someone or something has messed with your computer there is no password so you just click the Enter key. 6. This will bring you to a prompt that says: C:\WINDOWS>7. Type: cd \ Press EnterNote: between "cd" and "\" there should be a "blank space" otherwise the command won't work8. The prompt should now say:C:\>9. Type: cd system~1\_resto~1Press Enter.===============================================================================Note: If it gives... Read more

Hey guys, I had an Updating issue recently and am still not clear on the best settings for the Update Settings?

I just installed a bunch of Optional and Recommended Updates, but was sure to exclude the Bad Guys for the W10 Upgrade stuff: KB3035583 and KB2952664

So I still don't know if this is the best or not. I was not accepting Optional and Recommended before, but since having this Update issue though I would change my actions.

This is my current setting:
1. ?Check for Updates but let me choose whether to download and install them? Is this good, or should I got with checking for them Manually.

Now wondering what this setting should be:
2. ?Give me Recommended Updates the same way I receive Important Updates?

Can someone shed some light on this for me? Thanks, Nasty7

I first had a dial up modem. I got frustrated with that, so I got DSL. I got a virus, so I purchased Norton Internet Security package with firewall, etc. via download. When I attempted to use the Live Update feature, I got this message:

Initializing...
Connecting to liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com...
Unable to connect to host
LiveUpdate could not connect to your Internet Service Provider. Verify
your dial-up information is correct.
LiveUpdate session is complete.

I then deleted the dial-up configuration thinking that it would then recognize the DSL connection. Not so! I'm getting the same message. Any suggestions as to how I can get the Live Update feature to work for me? (Windows XP)

Hi PJ Staley,

Please do this. Click here to download Hijack This. Run Hijack this.
Click the "Scan" button when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.

Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required. Someone here will be glad to advise you on what to fix.

*Note: When you download Hijack This Do Not download it to a temp folder or to the desktop. Create a permanent folder somewhere like in My Documents and name it Hijack This and put it in that folder.

Hi all,

Need some extra help here. I attempted to get the debugging tools to read the minidump files post-mortem, but can only get into safe mode, which doesn't help me. I've attached the zip of the output from the jcgriff2 app.

I'm not positive, but it may be related to an attempt to install Spanish & Japanese optional language packs to Windows 7 Ultimate installation alongside a recommended update.

Initially, it crashed during start up at the 'configuring windows' screen at 15% into it. Two system restores later to take me back two updates, and now it returns to the 'configuring windows' screen on startup and crashes at 0%. Not sure if additional system restores will do much good.

Thanks,

- Matt

Had this problem on 2 machines; I read and tried all the fixes suggested on the internet; about a dozen of them over and over again.
Problem is the HARDDRIVE!
I had a fresh install and had the problem with existing harddrive.
Also had problem on an up and running computer about 4 months old; just never got around to fixing it.
I tried all the fixes on the new one to no luck. I know some windows setup settings look for certain hardware for some setup processes so I tried an old drive I have kicking around. I Cloned the new drive onto it and ran the computer and then SP1 and all worked. I cloned back to the new drive and about 187 updates have now installed. It's working perfectly.
I had the same problem on the second computer and cloned it onto a different drive and then to an SSD also; it worked on both drives; also had 187 updates install.
Even after reinstalling the OS twice and immediately trying the SP1 it still didn't work until I cloned to the older harddrives.
Finally!!

Help!
Had an incomplete install of a program...computer otherwise working fine...did a system restore to try to go back to preinstall...in the system restore shutdown and restart, now hung up in a update configuation loop that is in third step up to 99% that shuts down only to do the same thing over and over again. So my system never gets to the mainscreen acknowledging system was restored.
I tried F8 going to safe mode, but configuation step 3 takes over again, goes to 99% and shuts down to restart.
I tried the vista 64 sp1 disc...cannot acccess another restore point since it says the system is already in restore mode....just never gets there with the endless 3rd step update configuration loop.
The disc also does not offer the repair/update mode as an option...only full install.
I do have norton ghost 14 on the system...so there is a complete backup file on another internal drive...but no way to get to it to initiate a recovery.
VERY FRUSTRATING!!!
Could time remedy the situation...letting the computer lay idle for a few days...then try to boot up??? I've heard that this on occaision could work with Vista.
Any other thoughts???
Thanks!

BTW, computer is a hp desktop with Vista Ultimate 64 sp1, 4 gb ram, and intel dual core processor, with a bunch of bells and whistles.

Hi,

I have an Acer netbook running windows 7 starter...for several days each time I close the laptop there are updates that attempt to install but fails to do so for some reason...there are also issues of configuration, seemingly every time I start the laptop.

I have read the uploader tool page but before going through this process would like to ask why the laptop fails to update ? ...I recently got rid of any microsoft office programs...does this have anything to do with the failure to update ?

below are the updates that have failed several times ... sorry but the image is very small !

A:Windows 7 update failures and configuration issues.

It`s a couple of days since I posted the above but the updating failure continues...I`ve no idea if the failure is caused by this laptop not in fact having the required internal programs to ensure the updates are accepted...something is obviously not right.

edit ti add...maybe the laptop just doesn`t need these updates...?

Hi every bodyI downloaded Windows 7 32bit (no key yet), I've tried upgrading Windows Vista SP1 but when step 2 (expandeing files) reaches 21% the installation stops with following error "Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed."I tried to install Windows 7 in a new partition but the process reaches 27% this time and stops with same error.I've reformatted my hard disks completely and installation process reaches 99% then stops with same error.I checked BIOS settings and found only DVD and HDD listed (no third option).the Microsoft suggestion about the registry tweaking did not apply for me (and I tried to install a fresh copy from scratch).I'm using 2 HDD in RAID0 configuration and works OK with Windows Vista, I did load the drivers to Windows 7 during installation but still getting same problem, any suggestion???

A:Windows (7) could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed.??

Simple solution found for Dual Boot errors!

Here is an update. Since no one else has seemed to find a solution I actually managed to find my own. Just to recap you on what had happened to me, I was trying to dual boot Windows 7 x64 with Windows Vista Ultimate x64. Somewhere in my use with Vista my BCD was corrupt/deleted and caused this error to appear. (Windows could not update your computer's boot configuration.) After searching my computer I found the registry settings were correct, and file access to the folder that contained the BCD was correct, However my BCD was corrupt/missing and so I was unable to finish the installation and get my computer to dual boot. I found this out by typing bcdedit.exe in command with admin access and it gave me the warning "BCDedit.exe could not be run. BCD is either corrupt or missing".

In order to fix this it was quite simple. I had to use the original installation disc for vista to repair my computer's boot files. Unfortunately I didnt have an install disc that would work with vista since I purchased mine before SP1 came out, so in order to repair it I had to create a slipstream disc with the SP1 updates added to it. after repairing I instantly was able to see both Windows 7 and Windows Vista in my boot manager when I restarted my computer. I easily fixed and finished installation with out a hitch, and I'm now staring at internet explorer inside of Windows 7 typing this message. I hope this will help anyone else ou... Read more

I've been trying to upgrade from Win XP to Vista Ultimate. I have tried installing several times. The first time, the computer got hung up on expanding files at 21% and I rebooted. After that I have been getting the msg "Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed. I've check on a few forums and someone always says to restore the default value for the UpperFilters registry entry and then restart computer. In the steps that follow, it says to modify UpperFilters and to type PartMgr and click ok. This seems to work for some people, I however already had the PartMgr value on there. Can someone tell me what I can do, besides doing a fresh install?

Thanks

Hello,

I would like to say: "Hi, I'm Sybre/Cybr" - to you all. I've been around on this forums for a year or so, but now I have a yet unsolved issue.

The problem is that when I update my computer through one of these updates (link displayed below of Windows Update), I experience several problems:

- No restore point will be created;
- When updated and restarted, Windows freezes upon loading (at the load bar)
- I have to insert my Installation Disk once more and I have to 'Repair' my computer which leads to a roll-back.

Here's the image of the updates I can install after SP1 and SP2:
http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/7864/updatefail.jpg

Here's my computer specifications:

Vista Home Premium x64 Build 6002
Asus P5N32-E SLI Plus (European)
Intel Core2 Q6600 @ 2,7GHz - FBS1200
4x OCZ 1Gig RAM Reaper thingies (forgot timings, also) @ 800MHz [not overclocked, yet]
Asus EN8800GTS320MB [not overclocked] - Latest drivers

And 3 HDD's with 2 in RAID0 where Vista x64 is installed.

I think this is enough information o_o, if anything more is required, feel free to ask.
Have fun solving xD.

Thanks,
Cybr.

So yesterday automatic Windows update installed IE10, today I noticed that links in certain applications open in IE10 instead of my configured default browser, which every link from this or any other application used to open in before that update and the reboot that followed the update.
I checked the Default Programs section in the system control panel, expecting maybe Microsoft wanted to get themselves in any more trouble with the EU and changing the default to IE. This was not the case however, all the associations were still pointing to the configured default browser, I noticed however I could not uncheck the defaults already set.
So despite the obvious configuration being correct, links would still open in IE10 even after yet another reboot.
I went ahead and checked the registry associations, and found that http(s) protocol as well as htm(l) filetypes were associated with Internet Explorer with various EditFlags set (presumably to prevent changing them through the user interface, or to ignore the user interface settings).

Seriously Microsoft? Don't you have enough trouble yet?

Hi,

I've recently reinstalled a system on a friends PC but didn't upgrade to SP2 until today. Previously everything was running fine. I installed Norton IS 2005 and activated, then installed iTunes 7 and everything was working fine.

Then I installed SP2 and restarted etc, got all the latest updates from Win Update site and from Live Update for NIS 05.

If I now try to launch iTunes, the system freezes and I have to restart (ctrl+alt+del doesn't work). If I try to launch a game that was installed (X3: Reunion), again it freezes and I have to restart.

Norton will launch ok as will IE6 and any other piece of software that's been installed (ATI control centre, Windows Live Messenger and Media Player - that's about all that's installed).

It's extremely odd and I've not come across it before. Any Ideas?

cheers,

Nick

EDIT: I've uninstalled NIS 05 and it didn't seem to change anything, still freezes itunes...

W8 may run well for several days, but occasionally hangs for 30' to minutes. Mouse is usable and some window switching is possible, but during the freeze it's essentially dead. Occurs randomly while in browser, other programs, file manager, etc. Sometimes, but not always, a window reports "not responding." If items are clicked during the unresponsive period, they will all execute when the freeze ends.

After normal operation resumes there's no event viewer ERROR, but there is a warning at the time of the incident for storahci system: "Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued." There is no RAID array on this box. In device manager no RAID driver is shown anywhere.

System runs in AHCI mode and W8 drive is a SATA. Under "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" there were two entries for Standard SATA AHCI controller. Both indicated that the drivers were current.

I downloaded a Marvel 91xx SATA 6g controller, right-clicked one of the above entries and UPDATED. The Marvel driver appeared under the "storage controllers" category in device manager, and one of the two SATI AHCI controller entries vanished. Clicking to upgrade the other SATA AHCI entry stated that no drivers could be found.

W8 continues to hang. Hardware/software is identical to that used by W7 on an alternate SSD drive that never hangs. Before W8 CPV, W7 was running on the same SATA drive without problems. Virtually all freeze remedies seen in forums have been tried.... Read more

A:Hang/Freeze update CPV

Hi,

The issue is not inherent to Windows 8. If you have an issue running it, waiting for a new version is not going to change anything in that regard.

Install the latest proprietary driver from the manufacturer's website for the storage. Use the device manager if necessary. (Double click on the appropriate .inf to install it.)

If you still have issues, run the tool in the top thread of the Crash subforum and make the zip as it shows, then attach the zip here.

The experts will want to have as many details about the problem as possible, what updates are they, what anti virus software do you use, how long has this been going on.

Don't forget we can't see your machine so to get the best solution to your problem you'll have to give the experts as many details as you can.

Im running Vista32. Two weeks ago it happened first time. After a reboot of the computer it was a Windows update. It came to stage 3 and stopped at 50% and after that it took about 1minute and the computer restarted. It kept doing this and didnt stop.
I talked with a friend and he told me to do System restore (small Microsoft one) which helped. Then i didnt have any problems until now. It happens every time i start the computer and forces me to do this small System restore every time i start the computer which i find very annoying. I've now talked with more people and they say the only way to sort the problem is to do the big system restore (Reset it as it was when u bought the computer).
I would like to avoid this if it is possible, no one i've talked with so far know any other way to sort it so i thought i'd post here to see if anyone else had the problem and managed to solve it without the big system restore.

Ask questions if you need more information because im not 100% sure how much and what kind of info you actually need!

Try this:
Start cmd.exe as administrator (right-click and select run as administrator)
at the command prompt type
net stop wuauclt
net stop bits

You will see the services stop.
delete the folder c:\windows\softwaredistribution (you can rename it if you
want). Then start the services:

net start wuauclt
net start bits

then try again and see if it works.

Anyone with a fix that actually resolves the problem?

Hi, I have just attempted to fix a minor problem I have been experiencing with my E560 Thinkpad where the display won't come back on after the laptop has been asleep, one of the fixes was a BIOS update. I downloaded multiple updates from the Lenovo support page and they all installed successfully except the BIOS update which prompted me not to power off while the update was in progress and told me to keep the battery charging, I accepted and my laptop instantly froze on the current screen that reads: "SCT flash utility for Lenovofor Windows V1.0.3.1 SecureFlash BIOS detectedRead BIOS image from fileInitialize Flash ModuleRead Current Bios" it made some mechanical noises and has simply been frozen like this for a few hours now with the keyboard and mousepad unresponsive. I realise now that you need a disk or usb with the BIOS update in order to flash the BIOS, so I'm wondering if I can just power off by holding the power button and turn back on or if this will corrupt my BIOS and "brick" my laptop. Thank you in advance for any offered solutions.

Hello,

Has there been any other issue like this?

11.0.9600.18231
11.0.29 (KB3139929)
...appears to cause computer to freeze when IE visits some sites. Hard reboot is required.
That I know of, it happens on Netflix, EpixHD, HBOGO and trying to log into some premium movie sites.
Not sure what they have in common. Perhaps it's some type of Flash?
I have computers with 11.0.28 and lower and they are fine.
2 computers I updated to 11.0.29 experience this crash problem.

I wasn't able to fix it by uninstalling the update or turning off and on IE feature.
In one computer I tried to reinstall OS but IE still crashes computer.

Any suggestions?

Hello, I was just performing an BIOS update as recommended by the HP assistant.  It went ahead and started, and said it completed successfully.  It then prompted for a reboot, which I did. During the reboot, the system has frozen with the message (in red) "Upon restarting, the screen may be blank for a few minutes and various LED lights may flash.  Please do not attempt to interrupt or power down during this time." It then has a number 15 (which looks like it might be a countdown timer), and a Continue Startup button which is grayed out.  The mouse is frozen and the sceen is doing nothing else. During the bios update, I had the laptop plugged into a docking station that had a keyboard, mouse, network cable, and external hard drive attached.  When it froze,  I unplugged this. I don't know what to do at this point.  Is it safe to power down and see what happens?   Any advice?

Hi everyone,
I've just updated the AMD catalyst drivers with the latest downloadable from the internet, under windows 10.

After the computer reboot I noticed that it requires a lot of time to turn on.
I've tryied to uninstall and then re-install these drivers but with no results, the only result is that the pc at the moment won't turn on at all.
There is no way to reset the pc, because the BIOS windows is not shown.
It only flashes the "NUM LOCK" led, and nothing else, there is no response to every keypressed on the keyboard.

How can I make it work again? Otherwise, how can I save my HDD data?

Thanks in advice.

A:Satellite L50-B-23F Freeze after AMD Catalyst update, with Windows 10

It sounds like BIOS corruption, were you changing any BIOS settings when trouble shooting? Did you uninstall your firmware drivers? You may need to flash your laptop with a crysis recover file. And there's sometimes no guarantee that will work. You could try a BIOS reset first, remove your batter and unplug the device, hold the power button down for 1 minute without letting go, then plug in the device with out the battery and turn it on. Is anything being posted onto screen? You can try this process again but hold down Fn + ESC before plugging in the power lead and then turn it on while still holding down Fn+ESC. What are the results?

If it didn't work then you'll need to find the BIOS file for system online and then flash your system, it will need to be a compatible BIOS with a version equal or greater than your current one.

Upgrading the bios from 2.22 to 2.30 resulted in a frozen bios update screen at 56%.  Once I restarted the laptop was bricked and no longer booted.  The below is how I fixed the issue. #1.  I formatted a 8GB USB Fat32.#2. I downloaded the bios I wanted to flash (it ends in .exe) from Acer's website.#3. I ran the .exe on an alternate computer, this resulted in the .exe erroring out (it's not the right computer to flash) and exiting the installer.  #4. I found the .FD file in the temp folder the .exe created.  C:\Users\*your username*\AppData\Local\Temp\7zSE7A8.tmp.  You will need to have "view hidden files" turned on.  The temp folder may be different for you, simply sort by date and look at the ones that are closest to the time you ran the .exe#5. I pulled the battery cable (will require some dissembly on this model) and held down the power button for 30 seconds (plug the battery cable back in once this is done).#6. I put the .FD file on the 8GB USB drive and put that in the Acer laptop.#7. I held down FN + ESC then pressed the power button once.  I kept holding the FN+ESC combo until the light on the laptop began to flash, then I waited around 30-40 sec (mileage may vary) and the light on the USB began to blink.  At this point it may take 5-7min to flash the bios file.  #8. Laptop should boot normally into your operating system.  Please note that your bios settings will have been reset at this point so if there is a... Read more

Hi KERM007,
Was there any issue on the system, that you had to update the BIOS? Do you see any leds come on at all? Do you see the Dell logo on the first screen? Does the system stay on when you press the power button?
Run the LCD bist - Turn off the system and press and hold the "D" key + power button to turn on the system and it should run the LCD built in self test - see this link for more info - http://dell.to/1SkXNrG
Try the onboard diags - press and hold fn key + power button to turn on the system - it should initiate the diags - check for any possible beeps - this could help isolate the issue.
Connect with an external monitor and check if any display is seen.
Download the service manual - http://dell.to/1Rw7vpz and remove / reseat the memory modules and test the system.
If nothing works, I am afraid the motherboard might have failed.

I had a WinXp Pro crash yesterday evening. The computer did a system dump of some sort (not sure how it started doing that but it has lately)....and then the computer rebooted and hung on the page with DMI POOL update successful. SO, I cannot get past that screen. IT hangs there for hours. I cannot reboot in safe mode, as the F8 key doesn't work. I have tried the F12 and DEL keys as they are the only things working in boot. I have defaulted the BIOS. I have back up disks but this will do a complete system recovery wiping out my C Drive. I have some photos on there I never got to back up and would be very upset to lose.
Is there anyway I an retrieve the data before doing a system recovery? If I took out the hard drive and slaved it to my old system (that I am writing from now) would that work? To drag and drop it into this system, till I am able to recover the other one?

Hi,

I am working on a laptop for someone, and I am in a bit of a predicament. When it was brought to me, I was told that the owner was having a problem where the screen would pixelate to black, and then the display would come back up with the little popup message in the system tray saying that the display driver crashed and that Windows successfully recovered from it.

So I saw that the display driver was the WDDM 1.1 driver, which was probably the one Windows found for it when it was originally installed. Well Windows couldnt find an updated one automatically so I used my trusty program DriverUpdate by Slimware, which is the paid version of SlimDrivers (I know it sounds gimmicky, but theyre a MS Gold Partner). Anyways, that found that not only the display adapter but a half dozen other drivers were out of date, such as some motherboard controllers and chipset drivers. I went ahead and made a restore point and updated them all.

After rebooting I have this problem where, quite intermittently, the machine just freezes completely during startup, at or around the login screen. I can get into safe mode ok, and so I enabled boot logging and went to look at the logfile. It looks like there are lots of drivers that are not loading, but reading closer its the display driver trying to load over and over again. The odd thing is that when it doesn't freeze, the machine runs fine for long periods of time. I was downloading and updating software, and even ran the Windows benchmarks with ... Read more

I've tried everything I can, I've messed around with the boot priorities, taken all uneccessary usb devices out, taken the ram out and put it back in, taken the motherboard battery out for the night, replaced the motherboard battery. I really am having troubles, I can usually fix most of my computer problems but I really am stumped with this one any help would be greatly appreciated.

It also happens when you do a open then try and use the location pull down menu.

Thank you in advance

Hi there,

The KB that seemed to mess with me the most was a security update for Excel 2003: KB905756 (EXCELff). Not sure if this is going to work for you or not. You could always just take off all of the latest (I believe they were distributed in November of 2005) Office updates.

I think I could use some help troubleshooting a problem on my wife's Vista Home Premium Dell system.

Although I have used Zone Alarm Internet Suite happily on three XP systems, I note that when it runs on my wife's Vista system, with minimal software installed aside from the OS itself, after anywhere from one to three weeks, Windows Update freezes when opened.

Of course, I have been working with ZA, both via their forums as well as Tech Support (yes, it is definitely THEIR software's problem)...the last suggestion offered was to uncheck everything in msconfig aside from Microsoft services and ZA/True Vector scanning, but the problem persisted. It can only be resolved by uninstalling ZA completely and then reinstalling it, indicating that something happens within that software after it runs awhile.

To cut to the chase, here is the freeze log...I wonder if anyone thinks this might provide a clue as to the source of the conflict:

Hey Guys: I'm really hoping you can help me out. Had a nasty bout of trojans a couple weeks ago. MBAM picked up trojanfake.alert, backdoor.bot, and spyware.banker among others. Thought I had finally fixed the situation, but the original symptoms have returned: slow moving computer (within browers and without); AVG anti-virus and Ad-Aware freeze when trying to update. Also, I've been redirected from a few search engines. At times, AVG will flash a "Threat" screen. The latest named a file "your-antispyware-tools.com" as a culprit. I'll paste the log below. Any help you might have would be GREATLY appreciately. Thanks!

I've been struggling with my PC for a few weeks now, and everything I've done to fix it seems to make it worse. First things were just hanging, sometimes with a notice of "Not Responding", but often with no error message at all. (Noticed first on Secunia PSI, Outlook 2010, and Firefox) Windows Updates started failing. I use Advanced System Care Pro and ran all the ordinary scans. I updated and ran Malwarebytes, no malicious items found. Windows Defender updates have been successful, so I ran that a few times, with no issues found. CHKDSK in Admin Command box ran without issue.

Sometimes it takes 10 minutes to open Task Manager or File Explorer. I am trying to make sure I have backups current because I fear I might have to Refresh the system, and I am very concerned about losing Outlook data and losing other desktop program data.

I disabled Windows Updates and switched to Clean Boot, which seems to make rebooting a bit faster (takes about 20 minutes instead of an hour). At the advice of a Microsoft Tech, I ran sfc /scannow in clean boot. First time it finished verifying 75%, then couldn't finish. Next times I tried to run it, it just froze without error messages, even after many hours. So I tried to run DISM (according to tutorial on this website), got Error 1117.

I ran the SF Debug Tool and tried and failed at attaching the .zip file here. The box opened for attaching it, but nothing loaded.

Chrome seems to be working, very slowly, at the mome... Read more

I have no idea what the infection/s is.PC description is attached file in JPG formatMouse/keyboard freeze problems started with another PC that had a C:, D: and E: partitions. (All personal data is on the D and E part.) Because this is my wife's PC she uses for her busines, I switched data over to a spare, very reliable, uninfected PC that has XP home SP3 on it. Then problem started on this one. On this one, I tried these efforts to fix it: Defraged all partitions, ran C:>properties>Tools>Check Disk>fix errors, Malwarebytes scan (no results), Windows Defender scan (no results), Uniblue's Registry Booster (some fixes). Then I did the XP repair install. Right after the repair install, I upgraded to SP3 via a CD. But then found that I cannot get into the Windows update site anyway I try. So, I'm without MS XP fixes now. I could download all XP updates on my own PC, put them on a CD, and try to load them on the OS but decided to go to you first. Then we noticed we were getting unasked for new tabs on browsers which always went to different shopping sites. This happens with both IE6 and the newest Firefox (her default browser). The most recent problem is the BSOD. It began during both tries at running GMER. I never got through the scan. Hi,

I had this computer since 2011. Recently, i got my new INTEL SSD harddrive. Did a clean windows 7 installation and ran all the windows updates and updated the drivers. I also updated the bios to the latest version 3602. Since then, windows has been giving me random freeze from time to time. It just happened again as I was typing this.

I thought maybe the latest bios might be the cause of the random freeze. So i downgraded the bios back to what i had been using for the past 3 years which was 1502. But the random freeze still occurs. There is no BSOD. Just hard freeze. Keyboard has got no lights. Caplocks and num locks doesn't response. My razer mouse blue led is still on though. Audio will go into indefinite loop.

Windows event viewer gave the Kernel-Power event ID 41. I don't think a dump file is created when it freeze. I tried leaving my computer on throughout the night without touching it and it froze and restarted twice last night. I can't find the root cause to the problem. No overclock. I had also tried cleaning the contact points for the ram and graphic card. Is it because the new SSD is not compatible with motherboard or is the PSU not sufficient to support 5 hdds in total or is there any other underlying reason which can be found in the attached files.

Please help. Thanks in advance

Okay, in a previous post I talked about how nothing worked, I couldn't open files, use internet explorer, anything. So, out of frustration I did a complete reformat. Everything is great now, except that Windows Update still won't work and sometimes freezes my computer, Internet Explorer does the same, as does Yahoo Messenger. I have run Registry Mechanic, Ad-Aware, Updated Norton and did a complete virus scan, all with no problems. I am really frustrated now. Can someone tell me what might be causing this? I was thinking possibly a software conflict, but that's just an uneducated guess and was hoping someone a little more knowledgeable could shed some light on the problem for me!

Thanks in advance!!!

I have a new (to me) computer and had to install windows xp pro sp2 from a 2 yr+ old disc, and set automatic updates to download but not install. I went about installing and tweaking programs, getting updates and dl's etc. I did so much that I'd hate to use a restore point, 'cuz in a previous infestation it did not work. When I try to shutdown it says installing 1 of 87 updates, says it is shutting down windows and freezes, on the 2 or 3 times it did not freeze, it says it has 85 updates to install. went to windows update site and I think I installed 34 updates, but not sure as I've never done it that way and no restart was necessary. not sure it is relevant but my usb mouse keeps freezing up between1-90 min into session, tried reinstalling drivers but it keeps hanging when it comes to updating registry. I have a backup PS/2 mouse. I also use soulseek 156c client that, altjough I haven't used it in a week or so kept requiring me to reset modem every 1-6 hrs, but since not using it this problem has gone away. I've used WinASO Reg. Optimizer, but went and restored all the way back to its setup, then used Mcafee to clean registry. I use the entire mcafee suite and also use spybot s&d. I hope this is enough information (and not too much) and would like to send TIA to whoever will take my case. http://www.techsupportforum.com/imag...ies/1-grin.gif

Hey there, any help is much appreciated

After a lot of headache, ive realised that updating anything through windows update that requires a restart causes my computer screen to go black after the windows loading bar on startup. If i leave the computer for about 10 minutes it eventually opens the login screen and works as normal until i restart it again.

I can fix the problem by putting my windows disk in and doing a system restore, but i want to fix the problem properly!, i would like to be able to update.

i have done a myriad of things to clean the computer including registry cleaning, optimising startup list, physically cleaning dust out of the box and fans etc as initialy i thought it was a hardware problem before i noticed it was windows update causing it.

thanks in advance for any help,
Adam.

I need to set up three user accounts on two computers the accounts on each computer is going to be monitored.
Each user will be assigned access for certain folder or files and certain applications, like internet explorer.
And all usb ports and dvd drive will be blocked. Only the admin will be allow to have full access.

So i need to do something that allow ( managers) to monitor employees activity on the system during working hours.

On one pc is windows xp pro on the other os windows 7 home premium.

Any idea how i can acomplish this task?

I.was thinking of group policy on both computers but on home premium there is not group policy.

Also the users will be using almost all the same programs and files just the with different information.

Thank you in advance.

But for Windows 7 Home Premium you will not have the
Local Security Policy so you may need to upgrade to Windows 7 Pro for that.

This is easier to control with a server like Windows Server 2003 or 2008.

IN SHORT: 1: window update installer frozen @ 0% & not responding to kill/start commands
2: general system sluggishness & low responsiveness even after scans from malwarebytes/symantech found nothing and I cleaned up with CCleaner

So since I am not sure exactly what is going on + I am new (yes I skimmed the new user area) I thought I would start with the first issue.

And now I am here on the site. I would try (another) reset but it hasent helped at all to resolve the issue.

I have a Samsung laptop a few years old - Core i7, 2TB HDD, 8gb Memory. It was supplied with Windows 7 and I have the W7 installation dvd that came with it.

Over the years I have booted from this DVD and re-installed a fresh copy of W7 several times with no problems whatsoever.

A few months ago I succumbed and upgraded to Windows 10 - no problems - it all ran fine.

I wanted to go back to W7 so I deleted all partitions on the HDD, booted from the W7 DVD as usual. Selected country:UK and created a new partition on the HDD (whole of the HDD). Files were copied to the HDD in the usual manner, Windows 7 installed up to 100%, then onto features etc. The installation went with no problems up to the fourth step - installing updates. I though it was a few seconds away from completion and re-boot. However, I then got the message 'Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration'.

Repeated several times, deleting and re-creating partition on the disk but the same happened.

In the end, I installed Windows 10 on the HDD by booting from a USB stick with W10 on and it installed no problems.

Anyone got any idea what it going on? It looks like my install of W10 has changed the disk somehow so W7 cannot ever be installed again on the disk.

A while back I downloaded a movie to watch. Some flash player install file came up when I tried to open it, and of course it was a virus. Since then, I get search redirects, have vitamax erectile ads on every ad box on pages, am unable to update AVG or Spybot S&D or Malwarebyte programs, receive a script error when AVG tries to run, receive clean scans when I do run them (just ran Malwarebyte full scan 5 minutes ago, found 2 infections in 114000 files), am unable to update or load Flash onto Firefox, get occasional lockups when launching IE 7, and most recently I freeze up at a black screen or at the log in page on Windows startup. I have an old P3 system that I let my son use for internet browsing, email, etc. It has been rock solid for 6+ years until lately and I think the issue of not booting properly is that the master CD-ROM gave up the ghost. And so I took that out hoping that is all it will take.

Here is my question (and I feel so much like a noob; I did try to google but I got nothing): Where do I place the tab to take it from slave to single configuration? As slave the tab was placed on the far left in the verticle position. Am I correct in that to make it singular I need to place it horizontally on the bottom two prongs center-right?

I hope I am making myself clear. This is an old system and it has been years since setting it up and I don't have my manuals anywhere. I couldn't even access Buslink's website.

Thanks for your help.

A:CD-RW Configuration - from slave to single configuration?

The jumper will fit on the pins, based on what is imprinted or embossed on the drive. It is usually very difficult to see... but if you use a flashlight or other device you can place at different angles, you can see how the jumper choices are stamped into the metal. Most often the center two are Slave, the right is Master, and the left is Cable Select.
I suggest you jumper it as master.
If it is a known brand, you can find a drawing on the website of the optical drive manufacturer.

Hi

I have an issue that seems to be popping up whenever I play any game (have only tested a couple, will test more once I have posted).

Its a complete freeze (although sound continues), and if i try to tab out of ctrl-alt-del it does one of two things: nothing, or, screen goes black. I have had to hard reset each time. It didnt seem to like the hard reset either and I think in two of the four resets resulted in a blank screen again - another hard reset after a few minutes and it seemed to boot ok.

I have followed BSOD instructions, but not sure if that will help in these circumstances. I have also added the problem details.

My Laptop freezes on first boot. Usually when I am using after 10-12 hours it boots as always but when desktop screen appears and and taskbar items are getting loaded, suddenly the screen freezes. I can do nothing at this point except a hard shut off and restart, after which it starts working fine, which is why i am able to type this. I am very worried.
I have used the three tools you mentioned

Hi,

I am having an intermitant problem with my IDE drives setup.

Now and then, my computer will start freezing and unfreezing (stuttering) as it attempts to find both my DVD and my CD Rom drive. I checked out the event log and the following error is present:

Source: Cdrom
Category: None
EventID: 15
Description: The device, \Device\CdRom0, is not ready for access yet.

It also does this for device\cdRom1 too...i.e. both of my IDE drives.

If I happen to be reading from these drives when the stuttering starts, page faults are recorded (presumably because it was reading from the drives at the time).

I assumed this was a cabling issue, BUT a reboot solves the problem...

It is getting more regular and I wonder if it is a failing DMA controller...

This is a brand new motherboard so hopefully that is not the case, I would be interested in your views...

What is your computer brand and model, and what optical drive setup do you have? How old are the optical drives. If they have heavy use, they may only last six months to a year... and if they are on a low end Dell, HP, Compaq, eMachine, or Sony, they simply do not last that long some times.
If you are good with a philips screwdriver, you can buy a replacement for $20 to $29 at Wal-Mart, BestBuy, Circuit City, or others to test. and replace.

Hello,
This place is quite active, and I am glad to see that. I own a Dell 4600
Demension computer, it was purchased about a year and a half ago. I recently
reinstalled Windows on it, and reinstalled the drivers/utilities that were
needed, with the help of a Dell expert. I have Windows XP Home Edition right now. I have
the Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE for my spyware protection, and I have the AVG from
Grifsoft for my virus protection. I scan my computer every night, and I keep
all my databases up-to-date. Recently, my computer was infected with the
Trojan Backdoor.SdBot virus, and I looked on the Norton Antiviruses website
to get rid of it and fix the computer. So now, at this time, I believe my
computer is clean. Here are the problems I am experiencing at this time.
There are 5 users that use this computer. When I go to start>logoff>switch
user, and then I click on another user account, it will say, "loading
personal settings" for about 1 minute, and then it will show the desktop with
the blue bar at the bottom and the computer will freeze up (the start button
does not appear, it is just a blue bar). After talking with Dell, I did the
run of "msconfig" and made it so only certain items startup on the startup,
but this didnt work. It sometimes will freeze, and other times the computer
will work fine. I have noticed that it usually will freeze after the computer
has been sitting on for maybe 1-2 hours.
My second problem is also a freezing pr... Read more

A:Switch User Freeze and Favorites Freeze

If anyome here has any idea about either of these problems, that would be great. I am thinking about taking AVG off and putting in some other good anti-virus program, we will see. I have posted around on a few different support forums (including Microsoft, as well as talking with Dell), and not one place could help me. Is this a rare occurance?
Thanks
Patrick

Hi!

My not very technical brother bought a brand new ASUS G74S laptop a week ago. Two BSODs have occured since.

First time:
All we had done was changing the anti virus program in to avast! and installing all Windows updates. When my brother started Windows Media Player, it hanged during the first time setup, ie the computer was working and working but never finished. After some time, the mouse pointer froze and then moved sporadically, in big chunks at a time. He left the computer like this for a while, until he decided to try to reboot. After he had hit the reboot button in the start menu using the keyboard, a "Waiting for a program to close" screen was shown. It waited for taskeng.exe. After he had waited for a while, he hit the "force shut down" button. Then the computer froze at the "Windows is being shut down" screen for about half an hour, until a BSOD was shown. (I hope you understand what I mean with all the text in quotes, I translated those from Swedish - it might not say exactly so in English versions of Windows.)

Second time:
Since last time, we had installed a few programs, and removed a few. We weren't doing anything on the computer (a program was open, though, but there was no work in progress) for the moment, when suddenly them mouse pointer started to behave like the first time. Then everything proceeded just like last time.

Description:

if a program i run is freezing, the whole computer freezes to the point where i can't input anything except Alt-Control-Delete but if i chose "Task Manager" it does not open on the front, but i can see it on the taskbar, i can even see the vista sidebar ticking but i cannot contol anything that happens.

it only happens when a program enters an infinite loop (or becoming idle any other way)...
when i program, and my program freezes, i have to restart the computer (sometimes clicking log-off on the Alt-Control-Delete works, but sometimes it doesn't)
since i like to program, i can't restart the computer every time my program freezes, and it is a huge hassle to restart the pc every time my computer freezes

i already tried fixing the registry with tuneup registry scanner and i thought about system restore but it turns out i don't have any system restore points

A:Computer Freeze at every software freeze

Are you using a lot of resources? If you enable error reporting instead of a constant loop, it should give you an error message that you can post herehttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc709644.aspx
