Q: Dell Laptop computer

I am having problems with this laptop. This computer crash, so then I Installed the original version of windows vista CD that came with this computer. The problem is that it won't let me install windows updates it shows an error code 8007001f, and also it won't let me install anti-virus programs, flash player or any other important programs. I installed some of this programs on my usb pen drive but it didn't work. I also loaded all the drivers and updated them. I have never had a problem like this. I did a scan on this computer with windows defender. it scanned the computer for about 1 hour, and 1 trojan virus came up and it was deleted. I also did safe mode with internet but nothing has help. Please help!

Hi, I first noticed issues with my laptop last week when I could not access my MS Office documents. I am blocked from all access to my C: and cannot run any administrative functions. When right clicking on my C: it appears that the drive is completely full, which is not possible, it has to be this virus. I have downloaded Malwarebytes, rkill and Hijackthis. None of these will install and or run. I keep getting error messages that I have no permission or the path doesn't exist. I have tried doing this in safe mode as well. When trying to view the owner of the computer and under advanced security settings it says "Unable to display owner," and I am unable to make any changes here. I don't know if this is related, but since this started, my computer battery is having charging issues.
Please, if you can offer any assistance, it would be greatly appreciated.

My hard drive failed with error code 2000:0142 and validation code 99930. When I plugged those numbers into the matrix at it said the hard drive had a hard failure and needed to be replaced. I ordered and received a new like hard drive from Dell. I called 1-877-407-4513 for help as instructed on the packing slip. I was transferred six times after waiting on hold for several minutes several times. When I was transferred for the sixth time I was assured that this was the person who could and would help me. I gave this person the same information I gave all the others and she tried to tell me that I wasn't the owner of the computer. I bought this laptop at WalMart in 2013. I no longer have the telephone number under which the computer was registered because it was a land line that we disconnected. After getting this ownership straightened out I was again put on hold for several minutes several times. When she finally came back on the phone and I told her I needed help booting up and installing Windows 10 on the new hard drive I had purchased and received from Dell. She muttered something unintelligible as she had a thick India accent and was very hard to understand. When asked if she would please repeat, she hung up on me. My ISP (Qwest) has repeatedly blocked my internet access due to malware/bot detection over the past 3 months.I have 5 computers on my network, but Qwest is not able to tell me which one it is coming from. I will submit a separate topic for each computer. This one is for a Gateway laptop running windows Vista Home SP1 wireless to the router.When this started happening, I was using ZoneAlarm Extreme Security only for my computer security.My ISP (Qwest) has suggested many different software solutions, which I have implemented and scanned with. They include Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool, TrendMicro RUBotted, BotHunter, Microsoft Security Essentials. I have also received information from several local computer techs to use MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware, AVG free and Avast Anti-virus. The last one I spoke with said everything Qwest has suggested is useless as is AVG free and ZoneAlarm (except maybe the firewall). He recommends MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware and Avast. Quick scans by any of these programs find nothing. Full scans produce adware cookies, but nothing else for the past month+. I have a DELL Inspiron laptop (not sure of the model) but recently (in the last 2 1/2 months) the screen keeps going black it happens nearly everyday now, the laptop's still on as i can hear the background noise and the light is still on. I have turned sleep mode off so it can't be that, and i have to press the on button repeatedly for about 1-2 mins until the screen comes back on, and i then have to log back in.
I'm really worried it's the screen, but ive only had this laptop for 1 1/2 years, surely it can't be the screen in that short amount of time? i hope you can help, and please answer me in lamen terms i am not computer savvy at all!

This is not related to my last posting, it is another computer.

My laptop is having a problem with very slow operation. I have stripped it of unnecessary programs and have not found any viruses. I also did a hard disk refrag. Web browsing is almost impossible, sometimes taking minutes for a new page to appear. I actually do very little browsing with this system.

The computer was working fine a long time ago and got progressively worse. I can not restore to a better restore point at this time. It is possible that some of the problem is due to the wireless network connection which was difficult to get running but seems ok now.

I use BitDefender but all my attempts to update it are failing now.

I have a home network with an computer using an XP operating system and it is networked via a Linksys WRT54GS router. I also have another desktop that uses windows Vista Home Premuim. Between the two machines we use either a Lexmark e232 and or a HP G85 printer. There has never been a printing or shring issue between these two computers. I was recently given a Dell 922 Printer and bout a Gateway M-Series laptop running Vista Home premium. For the life of me, I can't get the laptop to print via network with the Dell. The laptop doesn't have any problem adding and or printing to the other 2 printers.
The error I keep getting is 0x0000000d. I tried the registry fix that Microsoft recomments, but with no luck. Any help or guidance is appreciated.

This is a procedure that I've had success with installing Vista printers when the normal install didn't work.
Temporarily connect the printer to the Vista machine and install it as a local printer using the proper Vista drivers.
Disconnect the printer and move it to the XP machine it normally connects to and make sure that it's configured as a shared printer.
Open the Printers and Faxes folder on the Vista machine, right click on the printer and select properties.
Create a new Local Port for this printer with a name of the full network path name to the shared printer, i.e. \\computer_name\printer_name.

Can I install WinXP Pro from older Dell laptop on to new Dell laptop?

I am using a Dell Inspiron 8200 right now and in order to save some money on my new Dell laptop, I'd like to order Home or MediaCenter with the new computer and then install WinXP Pro myself instead of paying the extra $119 to have them do it. I have a Reinstallation CD of WinXP Pro that came with the old Dell laptop; will I be able to use it to install WinXP Pro on my new one?

I have a Dell Inspiron 15 laptop that is connected to 2 Dell monitors via a Targus docking station and VGA cables. However, when I close my laptop to sit under the monitors, it shuts down the computer and the screens go blank. Is there a setting that allows me to close the laptop while still working off the two monitors?

Check your Power Settings for what happens when you close the lid. Usually the laptop sleeps, hibernates or shuts down when the lid is closed. No signal is sent to monitors when that happens.

Over the last 2 days I have been having a problem as indicated in the title of this post. The fault has rectified itself 3 times, but again today, it is back to "battery plugged in, not charging." As I am running the laptop (Windows Vista Home Premium; 32 bit) on the adapter without problems, I assume that the adapter itself may not be faulty.
I also have a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop running Windows 7.  Can I safely use that adapter with the Vista laptop, without causing damage to the Vista ?  If it is safe to do so, and the battery on the Vista starts charging, then it would indicate that the Vista adapter/charger has some kind of fault.
Hoping someone can give me some guidance. Thanks.

If the adapter has the same plug and the same or higher power rating, you can swap them.
Check to see whether the 1545 recognizes the AC adapter or whether it shows unknown (F2 at powerup).  If it shows unknown with two different adapters, you have a bad power jack or a bad mainboard.

Hallo!I purchased a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop 3 months ago.Approximately one month ago , the laptop clock started malfunctioning.Whenever I switch off the machine for a few hours e.g. during nighttime when I sleep,the timer shown is way ahead when I switch it on.For instance,if I switch my machine at 11 pm when I set computer clock to 11pm,when I wake up in the morning at 9 am,the computer clock shows 12.30 pm on the same day.The timer moves more ahead whenever I switch it off.Even after I re-set the clock,the same problem will manifest itself when I switch it off.Is this a software or hardware problem and how can I fix this?

Hey, im having some issues. I have a DELL inspiron 5100 laptop and i just recently removed a virus that almost destroyed my hard drive, I got it to work fine but after a few days of use it started to freeze up on the DELL loading screen on the start up, i accidently pressed the F12 key and it took me to a screen with different ways to start up XP, like through the Hard drive or a disk.

hi, after you hit F12 did you see the diagnostics program at all? Ordinarily I would say It may be worthwhile running a scan on the hard drive if you can. But, I see you removed a virus, can you tell me if it was with the help of the antimalware section on this forum? or did you just remove it yourself? I need to know if you are absolutely sure you removed all traces of the virus - if you had the help of a forum they would have given you the "all clear". Have you tried starting in safe mode at all?

Hi, I had a GPU fail in my Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. The card that failed was an NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS. The Vostro laptop actually can accept an NVIDIA 8600 GT card too. So I ordered the replacement part from Dell for the 8600 and they shipped me a refurbished unit.
The surgery to put in the new card took all night for hack like to do. I did not look carefully at the refurbished unit they shipped me as I was nervous handling the card (that I might break it).
But when I turned on the laptop after the installation, I did not get a pause at the BIOS saying “I see new hardware” like I did when I upgraded the RAM.
After the computer booted up I uninstalled the 8400 driver and then installed the 8600 driver. There was a snag at it’s possible that Windows automatically reinstalled the 8400 driver during one the required reboots but I KNOW that I wrote the 8600 driver over top at least (I had hoped to do a clean uninstall then reinstall but Windows tried to grab a driver for me).
So now when I right click on computers, properties device manager it shows the video as still the 8400 card. The 8400 card I removed has a sticker on it that says KU907 on it. The invoice for the 8600 that Dell sent for the 8600 says KU907 on it too.
I think I was sent the wrong part from Dell (I paid a higher price for the 8600 GPU) . Is it possible that a legacy driver is making the Vostro think it has the 8400 when the part IS an 8600. Or when I go to the Device Manager, does the computer physically c... Read more

After connected my dell XPS 13 with Dell 34" ultra monitor via Kensington SD4000 universal docking station. Have video but no sound coming out from my ultra wide monitor. The only sound that I heard was from the XPS laptop. My Laptop's OS is window 10 and I tried to use Chrome and explorer Edge, none of the search engine is able to solve the problem. Re-installing windows is the last resort. So before doing that, you can try the steps mentioned below which might fix the issue. 1. Restart the laptop and start tapping the F2 key at the Dell logo for enter the BIOS. 2. Navigate to the “Advanced” menu. 3. Change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from Intel Smart Response to AHCI. 4. Press F10 to save changes and exit. 5. Reboot the system. 6. Go back into the BIOS by tapping the F2 key and change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from AHCI to Intel Smart Response. 7. Save changes and exit by pressing the F10 key. 8. Reboot the system and it should boot normally into Windows. In case the above steps don’t fix the issue, run the Pre-Boot System Assessment (PSA / ePSA) Diagnostics. Run the test and check if gives any error code. Note down the error code and update me with the same, would let you know the next course of action. Please write back with results.

Hi there. I bought a Dell Inspiron 17R-5720 back in September 2012, and have been having this issue pretty much since I bought it from Amazon. The computer is running Windows 7 64 Bit, 6 GB RAM, Intel Core i5-3210M @ 2.50 GHz. I have Microsoft Security Essentials installed and run scans regularly.

Pretty much what happens is that the screen will turn to colored static, and the computer will be unresponsive. In order to make the machine usable again the power button must be held down and the computer restarted. The odd thing about it is that it almost always happens when I am in the process of moving the laptop from one place to another. For example moving the computer from my lap to the table next to me. It has happened once or twice when I just touched the computer while it was on the table next to me. A few times the screen just turned black.

Since it is still under warranty, I called Dell support and they sent out a technician, who didn't seem to do any sort of troubleshooting. He replaced the motherboard and the LCD display. This of course did not fix the problem, so I called Dell again. This time, they had me send the computer to them. They received and sent it out the very same day, again, it doesn't seem that they did any real troubleshooting. When the same malfunction cropped up again, I of course called Dell and they said that when they received the laptop there was some sort of cable inside that was "loose", so the connected this cable and sen... The technician Dell sent came to my house today. He replaced the motherboard (again), the LCD screen (again), and the hard drive. Fast forward five hours later, and guess what? The problem still hasn't been fixed. I just got off the phone with Dell support, of course their first suggestion was to send the computer in again and have them "fix" it. It took about an hour of going back and forth being on hold/arguing before they finally said they would "elevate" my case and and have someone call me on Monday to discuss it. I think I've given them plenty of chances to solve this, now I just want a replacement computer. Though with their track record, I'm not holding my breath. I'm even doubting that I'll get a phone call.

Does anyone think that this is power supply related? Not the power cord itself (I've used two different cords), but whatever is inside that powers the system. Sorry, I'm not that computer savvy.

My home desktop is connected to a wireless router through AT&T U-verse and it's broadcasting just fine. I can see the name and everything when I try and connect on my laptop but there is always an error that brings me to a troubleshooting screen. I've made sure the password is correct by going to Start-Run, IPCONFIG and then typing my IP address into the address bar in my browser. I dont know what else I can do, I feel like I've tried everything! Help please.

Sometimes, you need to replace the router.
Sometimes, you can call your service provider and ask them to take a look on line to see if the subscription needs to be refreshed.
But often, all that is needed (despite the fact that it is a lot of work) is to uninstall your existing system, then reboot, and reinstall everything.
You might also find success by looking at your device manager in Windows to see if you have any grey, red, or yellow flags by any related device. That may show you have a permanent hardware failure if you cannot restore it, then you are off to the store or your provider for a new cable modem or router.

I want to switch between 2 laptops onto a DELL E178FPc Monitor (which is VGA input only).  The Laptops are a DELL E6410 -VGA out only, running Win7    and  a DELL Inspiron 5000 series machine -HDMI output, running Win10.
I have tried to achieve this using a KVM switch (the ATEN CS22U, non-powered). It claims to be Win7 compliant.
When I connect it to the E6410's VGA port and then in to the Monitor it says 'no signal detected'. Subsequent research would suggest that even if I were to somehow get a display through the KVM switch it will be lost as soon as you switch to the other laptop (!). 
I have come to believe through research on the web that the E6410 Laptop will only work with a VGA monitor being directly connected to its port, or an alternative (powered) KVM Switch with so called Active-DDC (whatever that is!) may also work. 
Needless to say I have exhausted my tech knowledge on this one.
Can anyone offer further advice or recommend a solution?

I am plugging a HDMI cable into the HDMI port on a Dell E5440 laptop and the other end of the cable, which is Display Port, into a Dell P1914S monitor.
Nothing shows on the external monitor no matter what I do or try on either the laptop or monitor?  I have tried this on a Dell E7000 series laptop also with no result on that one either?
Does the HDMI port on Dell laptops support video or do I need to utilise some other means of connecting a second monitor.  Bear in mind there is no VGA output on these laptops.

Display port is NOT bidirectional. You can go from DISPLAY PORT OUT to HDMI IN but you CANNOT GO HDMI OUT to DIsplay port in.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop.  Recently, I bought a Dell Ultrasharp monitor U2412M to attach to my laptop to have an ergonomic home office.   My knowledge of computers/hardware is pretty... rudimentary.

I use my computer for writing documents, internet surfing, and rarely for watching tv.  Eventually, I will buy a lighter and newer laptop, but probably not for a year or two.
I think I bought the wrong monitor....  I was hoping to buy something to use now, that will last, and that will work with any future laptop I buy.
My monitor just arrived.  I connected it to my laptop with the VGA cable (my laptop doesn't have DPI or HDMI input).  It worked, but the picture didn't look.... very good.  
It is my understanding that VGA connections are the worst quality.  Can I use an ?adapter to connect to the VGA cable to access the DVI-D port on the monitor?  Or is this the best I can get?  I'm not even sure what ?video cards are, or whether I need one of these.  
I also looked up the specs on my old laptop and it says the specs of my laptop screen are 
1366 x 768 pixel
So is this the limit of what an attached monitor can be?

When I try to boot up, the dell logon screen comes on for a second along with the progress bar at the bottom of screen, the progress bar does not fill with the color and the dell emblem goes away..... the circle of dots that should spin also does not spin anymore, just a black screen

I will recommend you to run the diagnostics on your system to check the hardware functionality:

Restart your system and keep tapping 'F12' as soon as the Dell logo appears.
Highlight 'Diagnostics' using up/down arrow keys and press enter.

Please let me know if you get any error code/message.
In case the diagnostics pass, try to boot your system in ‘Safe mode with Networking’ from Advanced boot menu and see if it works:

Restart the system and keep tapping 'F8' as soon as the Dell logo appears.
Highlight 'Safe Mode with Networking' using arrow keys and press enter.

Note: If your system has Windows 8, F8 key will not work to bring up Advanced Boot menu. Try to boot your system for 3 times and it will automatically bring up the Advanced Boot menu.

Typo on the title, I ment Truemobile 360, NOT 355.

I have an older Dell D400 I'm trying to breath some life back into and I thought I would try out Windows 7.

Well, I got everything working good I think, but the Dell 360 Truemobile bluetooth.

Windows 7 just won't see it. No matter what driver pack I try, it says no bluetooth found. The official Dell Vista pack asks me to turn on the bluetooth but I can't even figure out how to do that, and the light on the laptop is not lit up.

I see dell has this app/patch that it suppose to enable the bluetooth but that also tells me no blue tooth found.

I can't use my bluetooth cellphone as a modem, help please.

That being said, other people have been having the same issue with other laptops, same internal bluetooth and W7 but what worked for them doesn't seem to want to work for me.

On a side note it work's under Windows XP, just not W7.

I have a dying Dell D610 laptop running XP Professional. I want to reformat/restore it, but I don't have the original OS disc (but I do have the original drivers/utilities disc.

But I DO have a legit Dell XP Home edition SP2 disc, with a key & everything (from my mom's Dell Desktop of about the same era as the laptop).

The question is now obvious, can I use the OS disc I have to re-do my laptop?

What do you mean by dying ? It would be senseless to reinstall, eg, if your HD was "dying".

As far as I know, an Install disk is not different for a desktop and Laptop. It will configure the OS based on the hardware you have on the laptop. Backup what you need from the laptop, and have at it.

I own a Dell Latitude E6430.   I am looking for a Dell Companion 12000mAh or 18000mAh type of device to power and charge my Dell Lattitude E6430 when I am traveling (no outlet available).   When I view the compatibility list for both the Dell Companion 12000mAh and the 18000mAh I don't see the Dell Latitude E6430 in either list.  I went and purchased the 12000mAh and I am attempting to use this to charge and power my Dell Latitude E6430.  It powers my Dell Laptop for about a minute and then quits.   Is there a solution for this problem?   And/or is there another Dell Companion type device that I can purchase that is listed as 100% compatible with the Dell Latitude E6430?   I would like to either get this solution working or purchase the product that is listed as 100% compatible.

I have a Windows 7 home premium Dell laptop that is on the older side. I needed to reformat it, but no longer have the disks it came with. I used a Win7 ISO to reformat, but it wont take the dell product key. I spoke to Dell support, and they stated that I needed to install Windows with a Dell recovery disk for the product key to work. Is there any way to use the existing product key when I no longer have the disk? Or is there any place I can get an ISO for the dell recovery disk?

Hleping a friend who had so many viruses on his Dell B130 laptop that all we could do was to wipe it clean and reinstall windows. He does not have a driver disk so I went to Dell's support page and found all that I need. The problem is that I don't have internet access on the laptop that was reformatted. I tried to download to my computer but it wants to install the drivers.

How can I save the Dell drivers to a folder or even to a disk so that I can install and finish this installation?

I thought this would be easy as all the drivers are on Dell's site.

I tried to get to Chat with Dell and could not due to the computers service being over.

So over the past 2-3 weeks I kept noticing that my battery kept dying even though I would shut it down (yes window > shutdown) the computer with a full battery. The next evening I would power up and see that the battery was at 20% from full charge. This is a BRAND NEW as in <2 months XPS 9550. I checked my event log and WHAT THE [email protected]#$??? It is absolutely filled with Dell Foundation Service and Dell Product Registration events all saying  " Power event Handled Successfully by the service." Clearly it is not.. The stupid things run every 10 seconds. So when I think I am powering down my computer, it is being blocked by these services and actually just going to sleep... but it actually isn't sleeping. Its waking up every 10 seconds. Can anyone PLEASE help me determine the issue. Apparently according to update service everything is up to date.

The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer?

But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested.

About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used.

Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro?

I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop with Windows Vista OS. I have a Dell 926 printer interfaced to it via USB. Printer driver is installed and the printer does communicate at times with the computer and does a good job printing. However, intermittently when trying to print a document I'll get a message on the computer that says that communication has been lost and print job failed.

I've checked all connections to make sure they are solid and no debris that might cause this.
That has not corrected the problem.
The other thing that happens is that the document I want to print will stay in the print queue/spooler and if I shut the computer and printer down and restart both it will print the job. And it may continue to print jobs but it's just a matter of time.

Needless to say this is frustrating. I can print several jobs in a row with no problem and then I'll get this "communication has been lost between printer and computer". And I have to go thru the procedure above to get the last job printed.

My wife doesn't understand how this works and will try to print the same job several times with the commo problem and then complains when it won't print.....and then they all print when the above procedure is followed.

Any ideas what is going on??? Any fixes??

Two months ago bought a Dell 8900 from Best Buy. After 20 days, it would not start, same with the next 8900 replacement... only fewer days. The first gameware as a replacement did not start at all. The Alienware Aurora worked beautifully for 3 days and then would not start. In the 8900's,,, got the blinking amber lights on the start button. Tech is coming to replace motherboard. What the heck is happening? Could it be the monitor... or the external hard drive or what? Come on Dell,,, what's up? I have a Dell XP Laptop as a back up using the same external hard ddrive.

Was given a Dell Optiplex 360 that I found out after getting a nasty virus had a bootleg XP OS
I also did not have any disks with it. I had older disks for a Dell 4600 that I used to wipeout the hard drive and install the new OS. Everything works fine except that I can not load any of the drivers from the second disk, (it was a 3 disk series)
thus at least at this point not able to connect with my cable internet. Cable people told me I needed the drivers.Any suggestions or can it just not be done.

You will have to go to the dell website look under support and then drivers and downloads for your model of computer.If you use the service tag number on the computer it will make sure you get the correct ones you need. For future reference so you wont have this hassle again burn all of the drivers to a cd so you will be all set the next time.

I have a Dell Inspiron 530, XP PRO, SP3, about a year and a half old. Almost since I first got it, every few months or so, when I boot up it hangs on the Dell screen. When I turn it off and reboot, it is fine. I use Rebit to back up everything on an ongoing basis and have an extended warranty from Dell. Is there anything I can do about this, or should do? Download the prebuilt ISO, burn it to CD as an Image, boot from that CD and run the memory test for a couple of hours or overnight to stress test the memory.

Got a bit of a problem which I need help on please:

The screen has gone blank but works on an external monitor, this only started to happen after I let my son use my laptop, he and his friends have connected their iPads etc for films and music...but strangely, sometimes it comes on without any problem when I boot up as normal, so it is still working, this has happened on other occasions I am sure it can be rectified but I don't have a clue really. See below for what I have tried so far:

1. Checked monitor display - it shows the external monitor as the primary display only and I can't seem to get it to display the laptop monitor.

2. Checked the internet for possible solutions but could not properly understand everything to rectify the problem.

3. Could it possibly be anything to do with the amount of memory that has beenused up? (my son has used most of it for his music & films etc.)

A company called TweakBit is relentlessly downloading software to my DELL Inspiron, informing me that my laptop has over 240 errors and offering to fix them if I purchase and install their software. They use the DELL trademark and also state that they are a Microsoft Partner, Norton Secured (using Microsoft and Norton trademarks), and are "100% Satisfaction Guaranteed" by an unnamed agency! They offer a 24/7 support number. I called the number and a man with a heavy Indian accent told me he knew nothing about DELL, Microsoft Partnership, or Norton! I found and deleted the TweakBit software installed on my laptop on 4/1/16. I removed it. It reinstalled on 4/2/16! Is this really a DELL sponsored product? The Geek Squad says that it is a scam! I purchased my laptop at Best Buy on 12/24/15. The undocumented software DELL had installed on the laptop downloaded malicious software from the internet! I had to perform a full system reset TWICE to get my computer to function properly!
I used to have great respect for DELL. NO MORE! How dare you deliver products with undocumented software installed! I have lost all confidence in DELL and I will never buy another DELL product! I wish I could return my Inspiron. It is an insecure device. I no longer trust it! I no longer trust DELL! I an going to contact Best But to see if I can return or exchange it for something trustworthy.

Just to say thanks for the answer to my previous question but here's a new one:

My Dell laptop just died. I am computer illiterate so all I know is how to get the harddrive out of my dead laptop. The reason I need it is that I did not backup my info so I need to transfer it to the new laptop. I am not sure if I am supposed to take out the harddrive on the new laptop and replace it with this old one so that I can back up the data and then switch the harddrives. Or hopefully if there is a way that I can back up my older harddrive externally without having to put it inside my laptop?

Can anyone suggest a way to get a dell 770 printer to work on a non dell win98 system?

My friend was given the printer from his friends, but it's a dell and it's pretty muh brand new so he doesn't want to throw it away. It's also better than his current printer

Anyway, he uses the dell install disk but once it begins and runs the setup app it gives a message akin to pirating. Saying something like -this computer does not support dell , or something like - this computer is not a dell.

I have a two year old Dell PC with Windows 7. I got a virus in my computer that by phone and computer takeover Norton located in my MBR. When they cleaned it my computer will no longer boot up. Norton worked with me for three days on the problem but we were unable to fix the computer. I followed other web sites and repaired my MBR but it still will not boot up. I tried System Repair, Check point, Image, and Dell system restore and all failed. I have tried to use the Windows install CD and all I get is a black screen with a flashing cursor and then after 3 minutes the compute attempts to boot again and fails. I tried everything to try and wipe the drive from C prompt and it will not let me. I have very weak computer skills but I can follow directions and I have wiped a previous computer I owned. (I confirmed that my CD drive is working) I also should mention I have a second hard drive on my computer that I backed everything up to.

I have a dell laptop with windows xp and I installed windows vista because windows xp is no longer supported. So I installed Vista but the computer runs very slow. It has a 120 giga bytes of hard drive and 1 giga byte of Ram which is the max for this computer, (Dell Inspirion 1450 Laptop) Every time I open a web page it uses almost all the Ram. I have a Dell inspiron 3500 laptop that I receently had to format and reinstall 98 on due to a virus. All went well until I went to enable DMA for my Dvd drive. I check the box in Device manager, it prompts me to reboot. Upon rebooting, I look at dma to see if it is still checked and it is not. Dell support claims dma is not available for this model when using original windows media for installation. Inspiron 3500, Pentium II 333, 192 mb ram, 6gb udma 33 toshiba, toshiba dvd-rom, margi dvd-to-go pcmcia decoder, Win98 SE.
Dell support also claims that the recovery disk will allow this option, where-as the original 98 disk installation will not. There is no drivers available on their site for the ide bus-master. I have replaced the hard drive and the dvd to no avail, also things support claimed were "bad". I have gotten nowhere trying to find out who actually manufactured the mobo for this model. Is there anything I can do to get this to work. This system used to play dvds beautifully with the decoder card, now they can't be played with or without it. HELP!!!

i have a Dell Latitude PP01L and have 2 problems with it when i plug the chargerin the wall the green light on the charger lights up but as soon as i plug it into the laptop the green light shuts off and i cant charge or use the laptop.

Problem #1 may indicate either a faulty charger or a laptop motherboard fault. Only by trying another charger will you know. If there is a short circuit in the motherboard, then the charger will shut down. If the charger is faulty, it may shut down on any load.

The second issue depends where the mechanical failure is, which only you can determine.

Is the battery casing broken or is the laptop casing broken to allow the battery to fall out? We simply cannot even guess without seeing both.

It's from Walmart and I was just wondered if anyone can tell me if thats a good price to pay and or if there are better laptops out there that are the same price.

i was given dell inspiron 5000e and it had nothing on it, so i tried to install windows 98 on it. it told me run fdisk to put dos on it, so i did, it then told me to reboot, so i did. when it came back on the dell screen comes up and stays there, it won't shut off or anything. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop that will not boot. I already bought its replacement, so I'm not concerned about it not being usable. However, I'd like to retrieve some files from the HD. I thought if I removed the HD and then found a cable that would plug into the HD and had a USB plug on the other end I could attach it to my new computer as an external HD and retrieve the files that way.

Unfortunately, the HD has what appears to be a Dell proprietary connection. It's a male 44 pin (2 x 22) connector, the likes of which I've never seen before.

Does anyone know of an adapter cable, or another method, that will let me access this drive?

Can this be done USB to USB?

hi ve3lty,

try removing the battery and the AC adapter. press power ON button for 30 secs. attach battery and AC and power ON as normal. if you still get nothing on screen, try an external monitor. if this does not work, remove the hard drive. Removing the hard drive will not affect initial power ON procedures. It will however end in error but the objective here is to see if you get something on screen.

I've had my laptop Dell INSPIRON N5030 for about a year..

It was working fine up till now but when I boot it up it gives me a windows recovery error.

It says: windows failed to start. a recent hardware or software might be the cause.

When I choose the launch start repair, it just gives me the windows screen with the mouse and nothing happens.

Then if i choose load windows normally, it will just go to the loading screen then it'll stay there for a while then go back to the windows recovery error..

I've also tryed to reboot the hard drive by pressing F12, but it won't let me it just puts me back on to the windows recovery error screen..

Please help me, I don't have a clue what's wrong with it.

its an 01 dell windows xp (inspiron 600m i dont know what that means but its printed on it)

ok, for 6 years she hasn't had ANY virus protection up, nothing to protect against any spyware/adware/malware or even silverware.

I've spent a week on it installing every kind of cleaning program on it i use and can think of.

first downloaded norton 360 and finally got that working and taking out many problems.

My Dell INSPIRON N5030 is a little over a year old and I got a rootkit virus and tried getting rid of it with my antivirus. It didnt work.

I looked through the forums here and found the exact problem, but it was closed due to inactivity so im reposting it in hopes that I might find an answer.
I also tried:
"safemode(ALL types) -- did not work
regular restrart - did not work
booting with a startup disk - did not work
then changed SATA attribute to ATA under BIOS settings -- this enabled to get to startup recovery
tried system recovery.. system restore later on... format/reinstall .. did not work"

For starters, this is in the wrong forum as you are dealing with an infection it needs to be in the Malware forum. I will request it is moved so you need not do anything.

The thread you linked to has the same symptoms but no mention of an infection so the problem is not the same.

Please tell me when you used a boot disk did it boot from it correctly and what boot disk was it you used?

When you tried a re-install what happened?

First thing to try is to boot into the BIOS and set it back to SATA for the hard drive and select Load Optimum Defaults. Change the boot order so the CD drive is in first position and then see if it will boot from the disk.

If it still won't do anything shut it down, pull out the battery and disconnect the power chord, then hold down the button you use to boot the machine and keep it held down for at least 30 seconds (this will clear the memory), then replace the battery and power supply and try to boot it again.

As in the other thread, saying "did not work" tells us nothing about what happened, the more detail you can give the easier it is to help you.

I'm also in the same situation, I bought a dell 1300 from ebay and the Hard drive had been changed, i'd like to get this hard drive into the same state as when dell shipped it, with Operating system and also recovery partition. Is this possible and how do I do it?

I'd also like to create the recovery partition onto an external hard drive incase It happens again.

Did you get any recovery discs with the laptop?
if the harddrive has been changed then it should have a recovery CD to rebuild it

You could go onto the DELL website and using the TAG number (its on a label on the machine) see if you can download any recovery disks for the machine, also ask DELL Support to send you some disks

I'm not sure if they have a recovery partition built as part of the rebuild from recovery disks - but if they do - then you should be able to access the recovery partition using F11 or F10 keys - I'll need to look up the correct keys - it my need to be ALT Key + an F key

I have a Dell laptop. When I am typing my cursor skips back two or three words and starts typing from there. Or it skips up to the names in the to box. This happens after typing 2 or 3 words. 5. Would you consider yourself beginner, intermediate, advanced?

6. What steps have you taken to resolve the issue?

7. Have you tried an external keyboard?
If not, consider doing so. Report results

8. Do you consider the problem to be caused by malware? I am curious as to why you chose "gen sec" vs the OS sub forums.

9. Boot to safe mode, by tapping the F8 key once a second. When the Win startup menu appears, use your up / down arrow keys to highlight / select "safe mode". Select "safe mode with networking" IF"
a. You connect to the internet using ethernet;
b. the issue occurs only when on the internet.

You will have no security; Firewall, antivirus, etc while in safe mode. Test by going to ONLY a site you trust.

My mother has a Dell Inspiron 9300 and it is majorly slow. It gets very hot the fan doesnt kick it and the harddrive just seems to be constantly working but for no reason.

As for the heat problem, try placing it on top of something and give it some space between the bottom of the laptop and the surface it rests on. Place two books or something along the edges giving it some breathing room along the bottom center of the unit. The fan may be clogged or not working. You could also get a cooler for it.. As you say the hard drive is constantly running, try going to the task manager and look to see what processes are running. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del, click on task manager, then processes, then click on "cpu" to sort it by cpu usage and see what is taking up your cpu.. It could be that you are infected with a trojan or something.. It could also be some other normal "process" such as a virus scan, indexing etc.

I recently bought a nice laptop computer from Dell for $800 dollars, or at least I thought I was getting a steal with the $800 price tag. I would have been much better-off getting the laptop with out a hard drive or an OS and just throwing on windows myself. Dell must sell their computers for so cheap because they are supported by advertising campaigns, like Aol, or Corel. Hello, I hope someone here can help. I recently received a Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop that he owner suspected of having a virus. After confirming this was the case I installed AVG. After the reboot I got a STOP Screen (Blue Screen of Death). The problem is I can't get it to reboot now. I've pressed the power and reset buttons above the Function keys, and even tried Ctr-Alt-Delete; nothing happens. I'm fairly sure I can solve the STOP screen, but I can't get passed this problem. This is the first laptop that I have worked on, so please forgive me if it's a simple solution.

There is often a "reset" hole to push a toothpick in, and operate a reset switch, but easier is to remove the AC, and the battery.

Most times when I try to start up my cpu is locking up. Usually it is before I have an opportunity to type in my password for login, but sometimes it is even at the desktop screen. We have a new dell laptop - I have unstalled the usual preloaded crap that came with it using the proper unistaller for the anti virus and installed ESS Suite.

My problem is that the first start up of the day is problematic. It loads fine until the password screen and then once I have entered the correct password the screen corrupts and the system would appear to lock. I reset the machine and this time when I put in the password it starts up fine.

The event log is not showing much but as the layout is different to XP I may not be reading it right.

What could be the problem

In Event Viewer you just have to burrow a bit deeper. Go down below Windows Logs to find the usual logfiles.

Try updating your graphics drivers to the latest version available from the manufacturer of your graphics chipset (ATI, nVidia, Intel, etc).

I posted about my laptop having no display. Had a lot of viewing but no suggestions. I have been searching for some type of answer and this is what I have come up with:

Because I could have had a power surge run through the laptop I may have done a few things. First, I could have a fried mobo. Hoping that the second is fixable. I have also read that my bios could have gotten messed up and the suggestion is to take out the CMOS battery and hopefully reset the bios.

Since this is a laptop and taking apart is time consuming, my question is:

Can I reinstall the bios on this laptop and if so how can I do it. Maybe the better is to take it in and have it checked.

I would like to try to do something myself before I take it in and pay to have someone tell me that it is dead for sure.

ok so thats my laptop, now for the issue...

I had a problem with sky broadband (which ill be making a seperate post after this), had some major virus's and i restored my laptop to the factory settings
which also formatted the hard drive, it reinstalled windows 7 automatically. Just for the record, i have done this on several machines over the last few years,
and on all other occassions the computer would be like brand new, running just how it should be.

so after the recovery, my laptop runs like absolute rubbish, by no means is my laptop extremely powerful, but it was fairly fast at just about everything.

since then i often get memory errors, something along the lines of inssuficient memory, close some programs or you will lose work etc...
I got the 1st memory error, whilst i had internet explorer running 2 tabs and windows media player (which is usually very very minor for what i could do before the recovery). Im not an idiot, but my technical know how is limited.

Any help would be much appreciated, if you need further information, i will gladly provide more

I am facing a recurring problem. This problem started after I formatted my Dell Inspiron E1505 and reloaded Windows XP Media Center (from the CD provided by Dell), about 3 months back.

Whenever I play any kind of video content (songs, movies etc.) in any kind of player (Winamp, Windows Media Player), the CPU utilization jumps to 100% with the respective player taking about 30%-50%.The remaining CPU is utilized by remaining processes.

When I kill the player, the laptop takes about 5-10 mins to return back to normal state. The process gets killed immidiately but the CPU utilization remains 100% for 5-10 mins more.

I really dont know what happens. The problem only occurs when I am playing videos otherwise the system is quite stable.

Please help me out to know what is happening.

Alright this has been happening a lot over the past few weeks and I don't know what is causing it. I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 and at random intervals the "Shut Down Windows" screen comes up as if I pressed the power button or went to Start-->Shutdown. Almost immediately after that comes up the system turns off and then right back on. Now it will start turning off and on repeatedly for like 5 times never making it to a successful start up.

I have no idea what is causing this and I don't see anything in the logs.

My daughter's laptop with XP Pro has spyware which keeps it from staying connected to the internet. It doesn't have a CD rom., only a floppy disk drive. I can't stay connected long enough to download an anti spyware program. Is there a program that is small enough to fit on a 1.44MB floppy so I can install it on the laptop? Thanks.

Try to get us a HJT log, this will fit on a floppy and you can copy the log back to the floppy to post here.

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
