I get 60fps with games with highest graphics, but out of games, super super slow

Q: I get 60fps with games with highest graphics, but out of games, super super slow

Inside of games, my computer is awesome. Once the game is over, nothing is fast. Things take forever to open, and, for example, if I go into google chrome and type something into the search bar, sometimes it will take a couple seconds before anything pops up. Could it be a virus? Or maybe something else...

This all started when I got defraggler. I defraggled everything I could find manually, analyzing then slowly started degraggling chunks at a time because I didn't want to wait the day it said it would take to do a full defrag. For some reason, that seemed faster. Before Defraggler, I had to use low graphics in games, and my computer ran fast. Afterwards, they switched. Any help?

I don't have antivirus because I am very careful and don't go on suspicious websites. I've come to realize what "suspicious" websites look like.

OS: Vista is infamous for its constant annoyance to the user. This is somewhat unlikely, but it could be Vista slowing you down. I recommend upgrading to Win7 regardless.

Processor: The processor seems alright, so you're not having troubles there.

RAM: You may want to consider a RAM upgrade, as many applications (including games) do tend to stick around in memory until a restart. I'd have to say the lack of RAM is your issue. It shouldn't take much more, maybe another 1GB-2GB should fix it up.

Graphics: Nice graphics card, by the way. Beats mine ._.
AntiVirus: Well, the fact that you're careful on the Internet does NOT protect you from viruses. Not at all. I strongly recommend installing Avast! Also, I recommend installing MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and give your computer a nice scan with both of them.

Games randomly hang/freeze even on low graphics...

I have noticed an annoying issue with some of the games I play.
Basically I will be playing the game with excellent performance, then suddenly the game will hang (music from the game still playing etc, but frozen).
At this point I just have to alt-tab out, and then close the process.
The rest of the computer is still running perfectly fine while the frozen/not responding game runs in the background, so it doesn't appear to be your traditional memory/resource freeze.
With one of the games however, when it hangs, it closes the application itself after a number of seconds, and displays the following error: "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered".
I have followed instructions on the microsoft troubleshooting page for this error, to no avail.

I have installed most recent graphics drivers.
I have tried running the games on lowest possible graphics settings (even though it seems to run perfectly fine on high with most games I have).
There are no viruses on the computer. It is completely isolated from the internet, and has never been connected to the internet before.
The other thing I have noticed, is that this only seems to happen with my first person shooter games... None of my strategy games have this issue.

Firefox is running super slow for me at times and then just seems like it hangs. I can open Google Chrome or IE and they run super fast during this time so I know it's a problem with FireFox. Also all my games seem to lock up during GamePlay so I wanted to see if any of my logs show anything. Thanks in advance for all help and suggestions.

Your log shows that you're using IObit Advanced SystemCare 4, so it's very possible that its use has damaged the Windows operating system and broken some of your programs.

If you've been using any other cleaner/booster/optimizer/tuneup type programs, that increases the risk even more of that occurring.

These programs do nothing to improve speed and performance nor perform "miracle cures".

I live in South Korea. The internet here is unbelievably fast. I've done 3 speed tests tonight, and the download speed averages between 20-40mbps, upload speed between 40-75mbps. However, when I try to watch streaming videos online, it's ridiculously slow. And it's not just one site. It seems to be all of them. Youtube, Comedy Central, BBC, and MSNBC have all been really slow. I notice it the most around 10:00-11:00pm here (only because that's when I come home from work), which is right at the same time most Americans are starting to go to work. Is it possible that the United States 9-5 workforce uses up so much bandwidth on their morning rounds through the internet that it could devastate my access to streaming video here?

A brief synopsis: The majority of videos I try loading require an obscenely long buffer time (upwards of 20 minutes for a 2 minute video). Not always, but usually. However, oftentimes YouTube will only buffer the first 20% or so of the video. So after I play it for a little bit, it inevitably catches up with the buffer and I have to wait again. Even video quality as low as 240p still sometimes takes an awfully long time to load.

Does anybody have any theories? I was able to watch the presidential debate earlier today live just fine (10am here, 7pm Denver time). Am I just trying to play videos at peak bandwidth times? Are there any ways around this? Could there be another explanation? This has been a rather consistent problem since I got i... Read more

Americans use the Internet non-stop round the clock, so that's not the probable reason. I think your ISP is throttling your speed for videos sites. You should contact your ISP and complain.

Just recently got rid of spyware from this computer. It was running just fine. I downloaded spyware guard, snoopfree, & zone alarm on my system. Didn't seem to have any problems. I went out of town on Saturday and when I tried to use my computer on Sunday, it acted like it had crashed. I reset my monitor, first and a pop up floated on the screen that had something like no connection found. Then I rebooted my computer without any problems. No sign of the pop up that was floating around before. However, my internet connection browsers (IE & Mozilla) & Outlook Express have been extremely slow, sometimes taking over 5 minutes to load webpages. My email has sometimes stalled and had to start over again and I get 4 or 5 of the same email.
I uninstalled spyware guard, snoopfree, & zone alarm, hoping they were the cause of my slow internet connection. NO such luck. I called my service provider (cable connection) and they report there have been no problems with the connection in my area.
I am ready to pull my hair out..... I hope someone might be able to help me.

Thankyou for sorting out my Desk top. (From which I am writing this.)

Now, my office laptop has gone on strike. It is an HP Pavillion XP. I have already downloaded HihackThis and the Analyzer, to C:\ HJT, but I am not sure how to disable the 'system restore' to begin the log.

It was going slow before I took a short break, and yesterday, having taken an age to start up, it then kept sticking. At one point I timed it taking 3 mins to open the menu from 'Start' and then another 7 mins to open the 'Programme' menu!

I did an NAV Update- 3 times -as it would not install after downloading. So, I followed the Symantec site advice and downloaded the Intelligent Updater direct. Then I ran LiveUpdate again. I assumed the virus updates would be complete, but they ALL updated again. But, this time successfully. Then I did a scan, but all was OK. I noticed, however, that the laptop was working much better after this action, at least it IS working.

Recently, (before this) after failing to download SP2 on Dial-Up, the hard drive crashed. I took it to a 'PCDoctor' had the disk backed up, and they re-installed from the CD QuickRestore System Recovery, before re-installing from the backup copy. (In fact, I had to return it to be re-done as they had obviously used their own CD not my original one.)

I have just discovered from the above NAV scan that they copied all my old programme files to "C:/Esteban/... " along with a mess of other stuff (naturally, my important busi... Read more

Welcome back to TSF...

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/ente...all_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

Please download Ad-aware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Also go here to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool, go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

We recently got 100Mb fibre optic broadband from Virgin Media, but it's been 2 days now and various speedtests report only 2-3Mbps. Other computers around the house get around 20Mbps (none have 100Mbps).

My laptop is a Dell Inspiron N5110, so it's not old, and I run both Linux and Windows 7 (dual boot) - neither OS gets more than 2-3Mbps. I've also tried moving to various spots around the house, to no avail.

I also tried downloading a large torrent (legal) with thousands of seeders to see how fast it would download, and it stuck at around 1Mbps, never any faster.

Why is this? If we're paying for 100Mbps, surely I should expect more than 3Mbps? Other computers on the same network get 10 times this so the issue is with my laptop?

Alright so I have 32bit Vista, and I made a new partition to my C disc to create a dual boot with 64bit XP. My processor supports 64bit so I don't think that's my problem.

But when I boot the comp to XP I can't connect to internet and when I try to move stuff around like "my computer" screen or any folder, it moves in a laggy way and I think I don't have the drivers. And I have no clue where to get them. I searched yesterday for like 2 hours from manufacturer sites and driver sites but none worked.

I can also delete the XP and install Vista or 7 if that will be easier than getting the drivers or fixing whatever causes my problem, but I need to have it as the secondary OS (dual boot) and it HAS to be 64 bit, as I need to be able to run some programs that only work properly on a 64bit OS.

Thank you for help in advance!

I've had this problem so far with oblivion (especially in exterior places with a lot of foliage) and borderlands,
The games run fine at 40-60 fps but when I move the camera around it looks very slow. I think it's ram because i had the same problem with wow on my old computer before i upgraded to 4gb as it was having trouble to constantly load the game in the background.
My current M15x has 4gb ram on 64bit but when I play oblivion the most ram used was only 57% although it was 44% idle, which seems high but there should still be plenty of ram left.

Any ideas whats going wrong?

Hello

I am interested in starting my own YouTube channel for gaming, comedy sketches, etc. I need to invest into customising/building a new PC including the hardware and software. I would need to be able to edit videos, play console and computer games with good graphics, and the ability to withstand the running of multiple programs at once.

Also is there any guideline as to the financial outlay I should anticipate.

I am not ashamed to admit to being an absolute newbie to this and do not know a lot of the lingo used.

If anyone could give me a basic guide on what I need to look for when buying and customising a gaming/video editing PC I would be very grateful.

Thanking you

I been using it since it came and never had problems, but now after i decided to format my pc after been some time since my last format (also was acting kind of slugish), the typing cursor blinks super fast, the time clock on the desktop goes very fast too, each minutes goes as if it were seconds, when i do the ctrl+alt+del to see the cpu usage, its always at 100%, the light at the pc tower that shows when the hard disk is reading/writing blinks very fast, and if i try to double click an icon on the desktop nothing happens, the only way to open the icon or make it work is by right clicking on it. I even reformated hoping for the problem to be solved and still got the very same problem. I was forced to install a copy of Windows Me i happened to have on the mean time. Any ideas or any clue what could be wrong?

OK, I do play online games, sims2, etc Some that require a lot of graphics power.

I have a 128 MB Graphics Card that I paid about 80 bucks for that seems to do a pretty good job.

My questions, honestly can you see any difference between this, and graphcis cards with 256 MB etc. that cost 200-300 dollars?

I bet it would be just like comparing Coke and Pepsi. Is this just some kind of scam by the graphics card manufacturers?

A:Super Graphics Cards

It's not a scam at all. Although for your purposes, you may not need the more expensive card.

The more advanced cards offer features that are just starting to be supported by game makers. A good example is Doom3, FarCry, and UT2004. The games are perfectly playable on my son's MX440 video card, but they don't look anything like what they look like on my 5800 ultra card in my bedroom. The textures used in the games look differently. Also, the games pause and jerk on my son's, yet they run smoothly at medium settings on mine. (My 5800 ultra card is not really what you would call high end).

I'm trying to save up a bit in order to get me a 6600GT card now so I can use the high settings. Anyone got $220 to lend me?

After 11 hours, it's found one item and is currently scanning the Program files. When I highlight the found item and right click, all the options (including Delete and Disable Service) are grayed out except Options and About. Still, some of those programs showed up in my Start Program Menu, and I uninstalled them from there. Still couldn't get ComboFix to run. Firstly, please note that an antivirus program such as AVG does not protect you from ALL the nasties out there.

I recommend you do a system cleanup using CCleaner, followed by chkdsk and a defragment.

Then I recommend you scan your PC for adware /malware using Spybot SD and Lavasoft Adaware 2007.

Any ideas on what might be causing my hard drive to run super slow after booting? I'm running Windows 2000 Pro on a light-use machine and recently I've had to wait 10mins or more after booting to be able to access anything. TaskMngr shows that Services.exe is snarfing 98-100% CPU during this time.

Hi all,

My computer has been running pretty slow lately. I'm not sure if it's because it's 4 years old or something else. Every time I open Chrome, it takes at least a minute to load the Homepage (which is Google.com). The same happens when I'm just opening my files/folders. And yet, once in a while it's pretty fast. Not sure what's going on. What should I post on here to give more insight to the potential problem?

Thanks,

Dell running XP, 5 to 10 min to start up or shut down. 2 to 3 min to open applications. svchost.exe error on shutdown and 3 others that flash to fast to read. Occasional "virtual mem expanded" message. It's a work machine w/ only 256 meg ram. I suspect some hardware problems but need second opinion on this log. Thanks.

Hi Ovie,
1. Download all by Free Download Manager - file - Did you install this program yourself? If not, I would strongly recommend that you uninstall it.
Uninstalls: Start>Control Panel>Add Remove Programs

2. MessengerPlus3 is a third party MSN Messenger extension that adds a number of useful features but also bundles the hard to remove C2Media LOP adware. The software does offer you a choice during setup to make sure to install MessengerPlus WITHOUT that "sponsor program"! Do you remember if you've installed it WITHOUT that 'sponsor program". If you did, it's fine, otherwise I would recommend that you uninstall it:

Download and run the LOP Uninstaller here: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/downloads.htm

Close all browser windows, run the remover, reboot.

2. Run HijackThis again and put a checkmark against these:Blue hihglighted ones are only to be fixed if you've uninstalled them.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PRISMSTA.EXE] PRISMSTA.EXE STARTClose all other windows and have HijackThis fix it,

A:PC has got super slow...

It doesn't appear that you have any overheating or other eviidence of hardware problems.

Most of the uncommon errors cite McAfee and your USB3 driver.  I would (temporarily) uninstall ALL of the McAfee software and uninstall/reinstall the USB3 driver...and see how the system runs.  If the slowness disappears, great.  If not, we will try another route.

Java should either be removed totatlly...or updated.  When updating, all old versions should also be removed manually, as suggested at the Java website.

There's always the possibility of malware...we don't assess that in this forum...forget the possibility, for the moment unless you have reason to suspect infection.

Over the last months my PC has been getting slower and slower. and slower.... When I turn on the PC, it takes about 20 minutes for Windows to load. Similarly starting up Outlook Express takes about 5 minutes or more. All activities are slow--including using the Internet.

I have a Dell Dimension 2400, Pentium4, 2.66GHz, 256MB Ram, running Windows XP, Version 2002, with Service Pack 2 installed.

Any suggestions, help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A:Help! My PC is Super-Slow

One thing you could try is to upgrade your RAM. 256 is way too low. Minimum should be around 512 and recommended is at least 1 gig. The other thing is that you computer could be infected.

THere are a few unnecessary things in your log, but I don`t think there is anything bad. You could get an expert to check it by posting in the "Security" forum here.

Otherwise
256MB RAM is really not enough for XP to perform properly. Make it up to 512MB minimum.

Here are some things which can help

1 In msconfig, disable everything not needed at start up. It will also tell you if anything nasty is in there.

Start/Run/ msconfig
Startup
Keep the page open then go to link below.

http://www.sysinfo.org/startupinfo.html

Read the Key at foot of page, then click on "Here" at top. Use the Search box to check all your entries

2 Disable all unnecessary Services. The site below is trusted, but make sure to follow the advice carefully.

http://www.theeldergeek.com/s.htm

3 What do you have running all the time in the background? If you use Automatic Updates it will slow down the system.

4 Run Disk Cleanup
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup
Click OK to clean up the "C" drive first
It will take a little while to "calculate"
Look at what is checked for deletion in the box. Make sure that "Compress old files " is NOT checked. The rest is your choice.
The main thing to check is "Temporary files" as they need to be cleaned out.
You should do this regularly

5. Go to
IE/Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/Security
Put a check in "Empty temporary internet files folder when browser is closed"

Hi. My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium. My IE version is 8.0.7600.16385. It's been working well until last night. Now suddenly, when I'm trying to go into large websites, everything takes halfway to forever to load.

I even restored to any earlier point. Still the same problem. (By the way, I had difficulty restoring. I kept getting error messages. In the end I uninstalled Kaspersky, restored to an earlier point, reinstalled Kaspersky.)

Any suggestions?

A:IE8 super slow

Hi Robert, loading pages may be due to your ISP's speed at any given time. Do you have another browser to test with?
Have a look at Intenet Speed tests and see what your results are.

EDIT: Also upgrading to IE9 has been reported by a few people to give faster surfing too. It should be showing in your Windows Updates now.

Hi,
I have a Windows Vista Home Premium machine acting as a VPN server. I have a laptop at my friends house also running Windows Vista Home Premium. On the Vista client, under the networking tab, I unchecked Use default gateway on remote network for both ipv6 and ipv4. The VPN works super fine and super fast. But, when I have the same settings on my Windows 7 Pro laptop, it runs fast at first but then runs like it is dial up. Sometimes, it runs so slow that it doesn't even connect to the shared files and folders. Please help!

So suddenly all the programs I was running crashed with the "has stopped working" popup. Then, since closing the programs wasn't working, I did Ctrl alt del. Black screen and loaded for 20 minutes. Basicly, it takes an unwaitable amount of time to open a single program, right click something, or use commands. I thought it was overheating, but I cleaned it up with a vacume and blower (didn't put thermal paste) and it was still the same. Temperature seemed normal anyways. My hard drive is a bit filled, but not to the top. More like 70% through. Any answers on how to fix?

A:Super Slow Everything

You used a vacuum cleaner to clear out the dust?? FYI, a vacuum cleaner IS NOT recommend as it CREATES static electricity which can damage computer hardware.

What do you mean by "didn't put thermal paste"? Did you r&r the Heatsink/fan and not reapply fresh thermal compound?

What exactly is the issue you are having?

PC SUPER SLOW

Guys,

I have a very odd situation.

When I am online it takes forever to switch from one channel to another when I tab.

If I play chess, the graphics also take forever and the website moves do not make any sound and
EBay=SAME.

I’ve done Disk Fragmenting, Disk Cleanup, C cleaner, Cache cleanup, Super Antispyware, Malwarebytes, autoruns and removed all graphics from My Pictures.

Do I need a faster PC as my Internet connection is at max?

Thanks

Hi. I noticed that after my AVG "trial" ended (I since updated to the AVG free version), a rogue program called Anti Live Virus or something close to that installed on my PC. Everything on my computer is super slow. At first, I thought it was exhibiting many of the traits of the Cool Web Search that I once had, but now I'm not sure if it's somehing else. First off, I have a pentium 3 450mhz processor. Not exactly up to date, I know, but I don't think I should be having any problems neccessarily. I am running Windows98, have 512mb of ram, and a Motorola SB4200 cable modem with high-speed service from Cox Communications. I recently installed Norton Internet Security 2005. I regularly run it, along with Ad Aware and Spybot, religiously checking for updates every time. I always defrag and disk cleanup, and have recently deleted a TON of stuff off my hard drive. I keep programs that are running at one time to a minimum to preserve ram, but things just still seem to run really slow.

When I first got my high speed service, it worked amazingly, but now over the past month or so, it has gotten progressively slower, as have many of the other applications that are not related to being online. For example, when I click 'start' it has taken almost a minute for anything to happen and the computer freezes momentarily. I mention this because seemingly, it's not exclusively an internet issue, although my connection speed seems to be the biggest problem.

It takes a RIDICULOUSLY long time for pages to load, and when I go to type information into the address bar, or sign into an email account, I start to type, and all of a sudden when ... Read more

hey there capt,

do you have Ad-Aware, or Spybot? both programs that search your computer for spyware. id suggest that you down them(the links in my signature will take you to downloads) and run them and than make sure to check all bugs... once all have been checked, go to bottom and click on next... make sure to update those 2 programs before every scan
and if that hasnt helped, please come back and post again.

The past few days my laptop has become unbearably slow. Images don't load, video constantly buffers, internet connection slow, etc., etc. I found a folder in my programs called 'Coupons' containing couponprintingservice.exe, which I cannot get rid of no matter what tool I use. I truly appreciate your help in resolving this.

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will assist you with your malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully.First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding.Perform everything in the correct order. Hello smart folks,

My Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop used to boot up in under a minute. Now, it takes several minutes and any time I run a program it takes a long time for them to boot up. And, heck, I see delays in programs while they're in use.

I just upgraded from 512MB to 2 GB of RAM hoping that would help. It didn't.

I've followed your steps and I think my computer is a lot safer now. Thank you.

I run Norton antivirus.

I feel like the biggest contributor to my laptop's slowness is Enterprise Office 2007. Some little searching magnifying glass seems to always be on and my computer's hard drive seems to grind a lot even when the computer should be sitting there idle.

If I open a Microsoft Office 2007 program like Word, Excel, or Outlook, they open REALLY slowly.

Also, can you please recommend a good registry scrubber? I like freeware, but I'll buy it if I must. That RegCure program seems like a scam. Below is my HiJack This log. I've also included the start up log below it since my start up is so slow.

Thank you.

Hello, and please forgive me if I am posting incorrectly. I have an HP Pavillion a6400f desktop. The machine has become increasingly slow in the past several months leading me to wonder if it has been hijacked. Here are the details;

- The machine came pre-loaded with Vista Home 3 years ago, but due to non-compatible work software, I had to roll it back to XP Professional
- I have 4 Gigs of RAM (I know only 3 are recognized by XP)
- I recently upgraded the processor from the original Core2 Duo to a 2.85 gigahertz Intel Core2 Quad Q9550 to try to increase speed
- I have run full MalwareBytes Scans, as well as PC Tools Spyware Doctor scans with no viruses or Malware detected
- I have defragged the hard drive
- When I run Systernals Process Explorer, I can't see anything hording processor or memory resources
- Other machines on my network that connect wirelessly seem to run faster than this machine which is hard-wired to my router

If I post a Hijackthis log, is there anyone who can examine it for me?

Thanks,

Jeff C

A:Super Slow Machine

HijackThis logs are not permitted in this forum. Further, HijackThis only scans certain areas of a computer's system/registry to help diagnose the presence of undetected malware in known hiding places. Therefore, it is limited in its ability to detect infection and generate a report outside these known hiding places and its log may not always reveal all the malware on a computer. As such, HijackThis has been replaced by other preferred tools like DDS, OTL and RSIT that provide comprehensive logs with specific details about more areas of a computer's system, files, folders and registry keys which may have been modified by malware infection. If you want to post a log, please follow the directions in the the "Preparation Guide". If you cannot complete a step, then skip it and continue with the next. In Step 7 there are instructions for downloading and running DDS which will create a Pseudo HJT Report as part of its log. Start a new topic, give it a relevant title and post your log in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs forum, NOT here, for assistance by the Malware Response Team Experts.

A:Super Slow Dell - please help with HJT log

You have two antivirus products installed and running in real time which will seriously impair the performance of your system, create dire instability and actually reduces your system's security level. You should decide which to keep and uninstall the other.

Next, please run HijackThis again and check the box next to these:
O1 - Hosts: ::1 localhost
O1 - Hosts: 195.245.119.131 browser-security.microsoft.com
O1 - Hosts: 195.245.119.131 www.spyware-protector-2009.com
O1 - Hosts: 195.245.119.131 secure.spyware-protector-2009.com

...close all windows now except for the hijackthis application's window (that includes this browser window). Now click the Fix Checked button. Reboot the computer and post back a fresh HijackThis log. Advise how the system is behaving for you now and if you are having any other issues. Thanks!

Hi
I have just set up a new PC and am having some problems with my internet access. Basically, pages are loading so slowly that, for all but one page at a time, any others are timing and not loading any any graphics or images. Its driving me nuts!

I have tried running both firefox 1.5 and IE7 and get the same problem. I am running Firefox 1.07 on my old PC.

It is not the connection as I have reconnected my old pc and it is running fine - eg I can load a dozen or more pages simutaneously no probs.

I have tried tweaking the settings in FF but to no avail.

I have tried updating the drivers for the network adapters - on the mobo and a seperate one. They are up to date.

I tried turning all my security off - nortons, defender, xp firewall - but no difference.

I have tested my current bandwidth and the reading is:

58.80kbps = download speed of 7.35 KB/sec.

I know this isn't real fast but it hasn't been a problem in the past - now its as slow as dial-up!. I suspect it has something to do with the way I have things configured. Can anyone help?

Thanks
Arb

My printer is an HP 1310 series All-in-one Inkjet printer. It's had some minor issues in the past, and while I imagine it's probably time to replace it, we are going to have to keep making it work for a while.

My problem is this: whenever it's printing something in color, it prints extremely slow....like 1 page every 30 minutes slow. The print quality seems to be the same as always, but it seems like the prints about 3 lines...stop...wait...2 lines...stop...wait...4 lines...stop...and so on.

It's also started trying to "install" every time the computer starts up or logs on--I don't know how relevant this is to the original problem, but it's also annoying, so I'd appreciate some help with that too.

OH! And it's also not the "default" printer--it's supposed to be, and I change it to the default printer regularly (we don't have another printer, somehow or another it's trying to print on the network via my laptop) and it keeps resetting to the laptop as the "default" printer--which doesn't DO anything, because my network isn't set up correctly (and I'm not entirely sure my printer is network compatible/capable.)

If there is any other information that I can provide to get these issues resolved (quickly ), I'll do it, just let me know! Thanks in advance!!

Hi,

Problem seemed to begin after a reboot with installation of 23 updates from Microsoft. Then the PC just crawled - 10 minutes or more to get one program started. Programs become more responsive after sitting overnight. I can actually type this at normal speed.

Starting new programs is still very slow, several minutes.

System:
Micro Electronics "PowerSpec"
Intel Core i7 960 @3.2 GHz
12 GB Ram
c: SSHD, 60 GB, only 1.4 GB free, uncompressed.
d: 1.4 TB free, uncompressed

Steps taken:
1. Did a system restore to just prior to the 23 updates.
2. Tried to run Spybot S&D. Not clear if I actually got that done.
3. Removed a few dicey programs.
4. Noticed that Avira AV killed Malwarebytes' mbam.exe
5. Ran Hijackthis and got a log (cannot attach it, not allowed)
6. Compressing the C: drive now.

Any suggestions for what to do; what may be the underlying issue?

What must I do to be able to post a Hijackthis log?

Thanks,
/Torrmundi

Recently I replaced a heatsink and fan on P III after that it wouldn't boot up. After checking wires, removing all cards etc. I bought a replacement CPU. It was the identical model number to the previous CPU. I put in the replacement CPU and the computer actually booted up. The only problem now is the computer runs, (especially startup and login), VERY VERY slow. It didn't run like this before. Is it possible that although the replacement chip still works it is making the computer run VERY VERY slow? I thought either it worked or it didn't work. Please don't tell me I need to fork over and $30 and try another CPU. I
Also, I did run a regstry cleanup program and still the same thing.

A:CPU (replacement) Super slow

Did you apply thermal paste between CPU and cooler?
It might slow down because of overheating.
Also, the previous CPU might have been overclocked!

My computer is Super Slow, 'am I infected? What do I do? I have run Adaware, Spybot, Mailware, SuperAnti Spyware, and CCleaner, what happens is 'either' I cannot complete a 'scan' , OR after 'scan' says I am clean, OR my computer cannot be rebooted as requested by software. Only does Super Anti Spyware does it say 'I have' a virus, and is a 'Rogue' type virus. It is Super Slow, takes at times 15 -20 minutes to Bootup 'alone'. I have been referred to this help site by "eyesee" .

Hello,

Our household PC has been getting slower and slower over the past few months. I frequently run viruses scans and the like, but they seem to be only temporary fixes. I think there's just too much crap running in the background and most of it is probably unnecessary.

Here are the stats on the machine:

WinXP Home Edition SP2
Intel 2.8 GHz Celeron Processor
80 Mb Hard Drive
256 Mb RAM

I suspect we need more RAM, but here's the HiJack This log. Any help would be appreciated.

There's a lot of unneccesary stuff, but I can't see anything that looks positively nasty at a glance. You want to ask yourself if you really want/need viewpoint manager, as a lot of people report problems with it.

I'm sorry I can't offer you specific advice on which bits of the unneccesary crap to get rid of - but i'm sure others can.

I am having issues with all my computers and some of my friends are having the same problems. It doesn't matter if we are listening to XM Radio, You Tube, Pandora Radio, News Videos, etc... They all play a little bit then stop! I know about hitting pause and letting the red line finish the download, but that doesn't work either. I have been to several sites and the one I saw the most was about uninstalling Adobe Flash then installing it again (most recent). I have done this and still no luck. Its almost like there was some update that messed everything up. What else could explain at least 10 people I know having the same issue and if you search the web there are a lot more people in the same boat! Please Help

Hi my laptop has windows 7 and the core i5. It was super fast and great until a couple of days ago. Recently I bought a terabyte external HD from Western Digital and installed the "smartware" that came with it. After moving all of my stuff over, the HD stops working and only makes a clicking/ scratching noise. Im dealing with that problem separately, but I just want to let you know recent activity before the performance suckage.
I have done a few virus scans and malware scans that haven't found anything. Upon a restart, the computer is extremely slow and nothing works at all, then after about 20 minutes of it just thinking it picks up and runs at about 80 percent of what it used to except simple things dont work such as uninstallers and browsers sometimes. I have Hijackthis and it seems that people can post whats going on in their machines and you can help them out. I would appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks
-Mike

First time posting here on the recommendation of a friend. My computer has been running slow, randomly issuing BSoD (I can never catch the code as it only appears for a few seconds).

I know BSoD is usually related to low resources, but this is a fairly new computer with 3GB RAM so I doubt it is because of memory reasons.

I then noticed preheipels where not working, my iPod, memory pens (Which are all USB). If I am lucky, I can get my iPod working, iTunes opens as usual to sync, and then iTunes will freeze until the iPod is removed.

My log is as follows:

my old dvd drive crapped out on my Dell 8400 so i picked up a Lite-On DVD Dual Layer burner (can't find the box and don't remember which one), but it says it'll burn +R or -R at 16x. i have it hooked up exactly like my old drive was (wasn't an R drive) and when i try to burn dvds, it says it's doing it at 8x but it still takes an hour or more to burn one (using Nero, i updated with the nero disc that came with the drive).

i've also got an old Sony 4x burner hooked up via USB and it only takes me 15 minutes to burn one with that.

another thing, with Nero it always shows it as having 7.x gigs of space to burn (i'm guessing from the dual layer) even when i have a normal dvd+r in there. also, the buffer level jumps around constantly which doesn't happen with my Sony drive.

the new drive is set to slave as well and is on the same cable as my hard drive. i'm also running XP.

i'm not sure if all of this makes sense or not (just got home from work and i'm exhausted). i'd just like this thing to work properly. if you guys need me to clarify anything i'll try my best to do so.

i've also got a program called Record Now DX that i use for doing dvd to dvd copies and it won't see the new drive. i'm thinking that it may be because that came with my 4x sony burner i got a few years ago and just sucks.

btw, it does fine when just reading a cd or dvd.

any help would be appreciated.

My computer has started running very slowly lately and I haven't installed any new programs or changed any setting recently. I have run norton virus scans and spybot, neither of which seemed to fix the problem. I run spybot about everyweek and each time it finds a few tracking cookies and usually one registry change (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wscsvc\Start!=W=2).

Hello,

I have a Desktop Computer running XP that is super sloooooooow!

Symptoms:

(1) When you turn the computer on, it will always boot properly to the Log in Screen - (ie. Dad, Mom, Kids) after selecting a profile, the computer will start to log in but sometimes lock up and not respond to any key strokes.

(2) If one manages to actually log in - When opening a program, it may take several minutes before the program actually opens.

(3) Once the program is open, they seem to operate at normal speed.

Please find included, a HJT Log. If anyone could help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Chris

A:SUPER slow starup!

When you say long to startup, do you mean it takes long overall from boot time to when you are logged in and ready to work? Or do you mean it takes a long time just after you enter the password...logging in takes a while before it shows the desktop?

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

* Click on 'Scan your PC' button. There should be a popup - if you have a pop-up blocker, make sure it's not blocking it.
* Click 'Check Now' & a pop-up window will appear.
* Enter your Country, State and E-mail Address & click 'Scan Now' - begin downloading Panda's ActiveX controls (8 MB size).
* Begin the scan by selecting My Computer.
* If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report. Ignore any entry it finds (since it wants you to buy the program for removal) as we will address this later.
* Click on see report. Then click Save report.
* Post that log in your next reply.

This computer running windows XP is running really slow. For example it take a good 10 minutes for the start up of windows. Once it came up I looked at the processes running and for one main one that was using alot of memory. A process called srvdvd.exe was using like 70,000K and just kept going up. I cant find any info on the web about it. Does anyone know what this might be?
Thanx

Scumware

SpywareBlaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
AdAware SE http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
SpyBot S&D http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

DL them (they are free), install them, check each for their definition updates and then run AdAware and Spybot, fixing anything they say.

Do these before the next step.

Then get HiJack This http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html,
put it in a permanent folder, run it , DO NOT fix anything, post the log here.

Hi gang, I have an older presario 2000, running XP home SP3. I have 768 mb of ram. recently when i go for hibernate mode it takes up to 5 - 10 or more minutes to finish shutting down. i've recently defragged, run MBAM full scan, Symantic full scan. no major bugs or malware found. Wondering why it would take so long to engage hibernation mode. it used to just pop over in under a minute. I usually use it if i'm coming back to the laptop in an hour or two instead of shutting down, but I do shut down almost daily. Real headscratcher, hoping someone has an idea or two.
Thanks.

A:super slow hibernate

Hibernation, copies your present working condition to hard disk before going into the deepest of power saving sleeps, could be that something change ,more programs running than before ,build up of temp file /temp internet files /java cache file ,maybe .
i use ccleaner and or ATF Cleaner ,ATF cleaner is easier and user friendly to use ,just click ckeckall and run the cleaner .download it from major geeks ,click on the download from majorgeek under download locations .good luck

I had windows 7 ultimate, nvidia 9600gt 1gb, 1gb ram, 1.8 duelcore for more then 2 years. Everything went fine until a week ago. I bought another CBS of ram and the of just flew... I was playing total war shogun 2 for the whole week and it went smoothly. Few days ago I had this strange thing, everything got slow and unresponsive. Sometimes my user was freezer on the welcome screen and I had to restart. Other times, windows explorer and all running windows got unresponsive and showed me this message where it asks if I want to shut down the process. After trying almost everything (BTW, safe mod was super fast) I decided to reinstall windows. I formatted everything and installed a clean copy, new problems arises. First, it became pretty slow, not critical but pretty annoing. Installations were freezing on 0% sometimes and had to be restarted, nvidia didn't install because of an unknown error, just said failed to install. I have no idea what this could be...

Hoping someone can help. My Dell Dimension 8400 with Windows XP SP2 was super fast and started up in less than 30 seconds. For about the last 6 months it has deteriorated to startup in almost 4 minutes and is generally sluggish after if fully starts up. I've got a P4 3.2 processor and 1 Gb RAM which used to be plenty fast. I've run Norton Antivirus full scan, and Malwarebyte's Anti Malware which has improved performance a bit but nowhere near where it used to be. I've also run the Disk Cleanup and have tried to defrag, but it hangs every time around 13%.

Here's my logfile:

the computer I'm talking about is an Acer TravelMate 4600 laptop.

here are the specs:
- intel pentium M proc - 1.73 ghz
- 1 gb ddr2 ram
- 60 gb hdd

running:
- win xp sp2
- office 07 sp1

I have been facing extreme issues with this machine of late:
- all applications just freeze and then the only solution is to remove all power sources and restart
- applications take too long to start
- the speed at which the applications work is miserable!

here is a HJT log of my comp:

I'm hoping someone can help. I have a 5 year old 2.8GHZ computer that has recently become very very slow. Im considering either adding ram (I currently have only 512MB) or reinstalling Windows (which I've never done), to see whether one of those solves the problem, but I want first to find out whether some software/malware issue is causing the problem. My HJT log is below: I appreciate any help or advice!

Thanks very much,
jeff

When I try to start IE or event viewer(maybe some other programs as well), it takes 2minutes to start. It seems the PC was hanging for a long time. In the event log, I saw some warning and here is one of them

Index.dat files are used by Internet Explorer and Windows to store history, Internet cache, cookies, UserData records and other information about what you have done in Internet or in your PC. Although some of their functions are useful, they are dangerous privacy threat - any person with even little knowledge about index.dat files locations and structure can see history of almost all of your computer activities. Index.dat files are not the only privacy threat but they are the most obscure and dangerous one because they are hard to find and even harder to delete. In fact, in most cases it is impossible to delete Index.dat files manually because Internet Explorer and Windows use them all the time.Try this:---------------------------Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop.Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.Click the Empty Selected button. If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select AllClick the Empty Selected button.

Hi all, can anyone help, please ?

On initial start-up, Internet speed seems fine, but the longer my PC is on, the slower the Internet gets. All other programmes are absolutely fine, and running at normal speed.

I have now run virus-scans by 3 different parties, ie AVG, One-stop, and my own service provider, Blueyonder, and all are showing clean. I have run NoAdware, Ewido, and Spybot, which have also found nothing. I use CCleaner, 1-click, and ATF Cleaner and RegClean to clean things up every day, but still no better.

I have, by the way, Intel Pentium 4, with 512mb RAM, 2.8 ghz, running Windows XP Home, and I have a wireless internet connection (all connections checked and in order)

Any ideas please, would be greatly appreciated. Here is my HJT log:

Recently, our computer slowed waaay down. For instance, to start Mozilla Firefox takes almost a full 60 seconds. Starting Corel Photo 6 takes nearly 5 minutes. Just starting the computer takes upwards of 4-5 minutes. Frustrating doesn't even begin to describe it. Heck, I tried to start the Windows Solitaire and it took almost a minute to start.

I think we may have some malware in our system, but our anti-virus Trend Micro doesn't seem to have found it. I did everything in the "your computer is slow" section except: Actually opening the box and physically cleaning it; and taking all of our photo files and putting them onto a separate hard disk. But I have done everything else.

Two things that happened during the Add/Remove extraneous programs excercise:

Tried to remove MyWaySearch Assistant, and it crashed the Add/Remove program window
Then tried to remove Viewpoint media player, and got an error. I could attach a photo or a Word Doc of the error.

Thanks for any help in advance. I have run HiJack this, and could post to the Log Forum, if an expert so directs me. But maybe it's not Malware.

Thanks -

chris

A:Computer is super slow, why, why why?

Hi chrisshorb. Welcome to Bleeping Computer.A couple of things you could look at.Have a look at this and run a couple of online scans to rule out an infection. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/34773/preparation-guide-for-use-before-using-malware-removal-tools-and-requesting-help/How much room do you have on your hard drive. Less than 15% free space will drastically slow things down. START/right click on My Computer/Manage/Disk Management. If this is your problem, then obviously you will have to either delete items or burn them to CD.Let us know how you get on.Cheers

Hi.Welcome.

Please download the Killbox.

Run Killbox, left click and drag you mouse over the highlighted files below (including filepath) then right click and choose Copy (including filepath) with your mouse, rightclick and choose Copy. Insert your mouse pointer within the box entitled "Full Filepath of File to Delete", rightclick again and choose File > Paste from Clipboard. All the files should now appear in the box (click on the Tab and check to make sure that only the files I have identified as malware and marked for deletion are there). If each file exists, it will appear in blue under that window when you click on it. Click on Delete on Reboot. Next click on > "Delete on Reboot" and click on "All Files". Please do this even if this option is already checked. You will get a message saying "File with be deleted on next reboot, click "Yes". Process and Reboot now?" Click "Yes" to reboot
