Please help with message "does not contain enough free space"

Q: Please help with message "does not contain enough free space"

Hi,

I want to install Win7 64 bit from legal retail MS disc.

My computer is highly specified 7.4 rated.

I previously had Win 7 32 bit on it, but have formatted the 37GB SSD partition.

My difficulty is that I am getting the message below, whether I select the 37 GB partition or any other partition up to 500GB free space.

" Setup was unable to use the existing system partition because it does not contain the required free space"

There is very small 100MB partition on the SSD drive, named 'System Reserve' which I did not create, and do not know what it does. Do you think that this is causing the problem?

Many thaknks,
Roy Mayo

The Free Space is in an Extended partition.
Right click on the free space and delete the Extended partition. You can then extend the C partition into the Unallocated space released.

Earlier today I tried to dual boot my hard drive to run both Windows 7 and Ubuntu. I wasn't able to do it properly (I must have done some wrong steps, I'm new to all this stuff and didn't realize how complicated partitioning was... ah.) and now my hard drive is left with "free space" (15GB, I think its an extended partition) and "unallocated space" (38GB, not sure what kind of partition it is) alongside my C drive (primary), Lenovo Recovery partition (primary), and something called "SYSTEM_DRV" (primary).

I think the "free space" is extended because when I try and create a new volume with the "unallocated space", I'm denied and a window pops up saying I have too many primary partitions.

The option to 'delete partition' for the "free space" is available but if I select it, a warning window pops up (included in thumbnail below).

What I'd like to do is reformat the "free space" and "unallocated space" in some way that it can be used/merged to the C drive.

I've included a screen cap of my HD in Disk Manager below.

A:"Free space" and "unallocated space" on HD - what can I do with this?

Hello again mate.

If you delete the "Free Space" it will become unallocated space that you can extend the C: partition partition into.

I have a C: drive which I want to increase in size. Under disk management there is 20GB of "Free space" - (right next to the C: partition). But neither disk management or EASUES partition manager will allow the partition to use this space. How to I change "free space" to "unallocated" so that it can be used ?

A:Cannot extend volume (disk management) although "free space" exists

Can you post a snip showing what you have? An image makes it easier for us to help you. For example, you said that there was 20GB of free space next to your C: partition. What you didn't say was whether it was to the left or right of it.

Hello all, new member here. I have came across this forum many times in the past years when searching, and have found it to be very beneficial. So, I figured I would see if anyone here may know why this is happening.

First off, the information about the Laptop in question;
-Asus K60IJ
-Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit
-Intel Pentium @2.20 GHZ
-4GB DDR 2 Ram
-500GB Seagate Hard Drive

As a part of regular maintenance, I use Glary Utilities and CCleaner to keep the PC clean. In an effort to protect deleted data, I run the "drive wiper"/"wipe free space" function of these programs every so often. I have never had a problem with carrying out these actions until the other day. CCleaner acts like it does something, but having done this before, I know that it's not a few minute operation. Glary Utilities gives a more reasonable response when trying;

"Error: Cannot Wipe free space for UNC drive"

I don't know much about UNC or why my C:\ Drive would be categorized as this. I am on a home WiFi connection, however I haven't every had this connected as a network computer, and also have all of the network/sharing options disabled. I have not made any recent changes that I can recall which may have caused this.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this may be happening, or better yet, how I can revert back to where I am able to use this feature of the programs?

All input and suggestions are welcome, I appreciate it very much!
Thank you

A:Unknown reasoning for "Error: Cannot Wipe free space for UNC drive"

Hi redhatman, welcome to 7F!

Sounds like something happened when CCleaner (CC) attempted to wipe the free space, Glary picked up on those changes, and it ended up being a UNC drive, and it (Glary) couldn't determine the original working directory to start itself.
Did CC show the "Cannot Wipe free space for UNC drive" error?
Had you made any changes to the file system between the time you last ran CC?

What to try:
Before every CC run the program asks you if you want to create a backup of the registry, if you were prudent enough to do that, try running that backup. https://Problems after you have run CCleaner | www.piriform.com
If you made a restore point try it or the closest one to before the time/date of this wipe.
Start your machine by Last Known Good Configuration. See Step #4 and use your arrow keys to move to that option.
If all the above do not work you may have to try a Repair Install.
As a last resort try backup images or clones if you have them.

If any of these steps resolves your problem you should run a CHKDSK, and SFC /scannow.
By the way, thank you for filling out your System Specs; If you add the model number (K60IJ) of your laptop to your System Specs you won't have to list it or the rest of them in any of your subsequent posts.

Big Kudos to anybody who can solve this one! Very little/nothing on Google or microsoft support site.
Here's the problem:

I'm helping a family member who has a new Dell PC with Windows XP Home, Outlook Express 6.
Every time they close Outlook Express, the following Warning pops up:
To free up disk space OE can compact messages. This may take a few minutes. There are 2 options - OK and Cancel.

Here is the rub: We've closed the warning, or we've clicked OK, or we've clicked cancel, we've checked the box that says don't ask me again....these warnings continue to come up next time (EVERY time) Outlook Express is closed.

This is a senior citizen who has, maybe, 20 email messages and no shortage of memory or disk space. I want to prevent this warning from coming up ever again. How do I do it? Is there some default I can change somewhere?

I mapped a few network drives to different shared folders on my EX485 with the inital 750GB drive installed. Since then, I have installed an additional 2x1TB. However, in Windows 7 it is showing 1.18TB free of 678GB, so it recognizes the correct free space, but is still showing the old HDD total. I've removed the mappings and readded and rebooted both my PC and WHS with no luck. Any suggestions? Thank You!

I'm running Win2000 and have Norton Systemworks. The computer's never had Internet, and I never, ever buy pirated software, so I don't think it's a virus. C-drive is (I think) 40 G. D-drive is 120 G. These are 2 physical disks.

I noticed awhile back whenever I delete a large video file (sometimes 7 or 8 gig, sometimes larger), the space that should be recovered does not show up in free space. Running Norton's defrag took quite awhile and did not fix the problem.

I tried emptying Recycle Bin, emptying Norton recycle, and no avail. The problem occurs when I delete the file in Windows Explorer, or if I go out into DOS and delete, it's the same. Also if I do the shift-delete (to avoid the Recycle Bin), same. Any of these three approaches yields the same result.

Now, just to show you how smart I am, I went and put some video files on the C-drive. When C-drive filled up (and that sure didn't take long), I copied them to D-drive and deleted two files, totaling nearly 20 gig. Guess what. Same problem. Now, C-drive shows only like 200+ Mb free, although it should have about 20 G.

I tried to run defrag (actually Norton's version), but it says there's not enough free space. Well, duhhh.

H - E - L - P ! How can I recover my free space without reformating? And what should I do next time I delete a large file, so this problem won't resurface.

Any help would be genuinely apreciated.

Jim

A:I delete files and "free space" doesn't change

You could check System Restore to see if it is saving copies of the videos or is it possible that some other program is saving backup copies of all your files.

System Restore,by the way is set by default to use 12% of your harddrive for restore points.

I got the warning msg that my drive "E" (system restore) was almost full. I did a disk cleanup, and a delete all restore points (including system...). After deleting approx 25 restore points and I've deleted down to 2 currently (new ones) and the only way I could get them to go was with CCleaner, My disk now shows only 4.2 free of the setting of 10.6GB. I cannot find what it taking up over 6GB on my recovery disk. What has it gone for....? I searched the internet several hours but can't find the answer. Any help appreciated...TJ

A:Unable to increase free space on Recovery Disk "E"

System Restore points take up space on C, rather than in E or a recovery partition in my experience. A recovery partition is normally put there by the manufacturer to allow you to restore to factory specifications if needed. I wouldn't ever deliberately put anything else on a recovery partition.

Who made this PC?

Can you post a picture of Windows Disk Management so we can see a visual display of your partitions?

So I bought this computer off a friend and immediately noticed it was already infected with malwares... sometimes when I click on a search result I get redirected to a random website. If I drag the link to create another tab in Firefox it usually opens the right site though. Sometimes I get popdowns as well.

In safe, safe with networking, and regular modes I've ran ESET caught a few files and deleted them, ran Stopzilla and caught a few more files so they both saying i'm clean now. Unfortunately it didn't seem to fix much and now Stopzilla tells me that there is a 'Vundo.y' infection and when i delete the files they just show back up on the scan after every reboot. I also can't install or use Mbam. I could install it a while ago, but the desktop shortcut would stop working and say that it couldn't find the .exe file. Trying to open the mbam.exe started to load it and then did nothing.

Figured I'd just re-install Windows 7, but now when I try to install it I get a error saying "There is not enough free space to store temporary Windows installation files. Try using Disk Cleanup, uninstall old programs, or move files to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive. "

I have an Acer Aspire 5517
running Windows 7 32-bit
140Gb HD
1.6 GHz processor
3Gb of RAM

I have access to a windows boot disc

I have no idea what else to try, I'm totally stuck! Any help that you guys could give would be very very much appreciated!

Several times a day I get a message "Outlook Express. To free up disc space, Outlook Express can compact messages. This may take up to a few minutes" which is preceeded by 10 minutes of my PC being very slow. I have 50% disc space free (37GB out of 74). I run Windows 97. I have defragmented my disc several times. I have used RegCure regularly and it has made no difference. At other times, I try to start Outlook Express and a message comes up saying it is already running, followed a little while later by the above error message. Any ideas, please?

HD: Reads 628gb free of 167gb. It is a 180gb solid state Intel drive.

Profile: All profile settings do not load, when I log in every time I get "Preparing your desktop" Can not pin to the bottom bar. No programs show on start bar window above "all programs". Random characters show in windows explorer next to date column.

Other than that runs fine (For now), I created a new profile and that one functions properly.

How can I restore my original login to working order, all data is still there...

Also, why does then HD show almost 500gb free beyond its total capacity?

Thanks

If you could post a screen shot of your Disk Management, it would help to clear things. Click on the round Windows Button in the lower left corner of the screen. Type "Disk Management" (without quotes) in the line above the button and hit enter. The Disk Management will pop up. Expand all columns so the print can be read. Follow this tutorial

On one system I am getting this error message once every day or two. The hard drive has over 300GB available. The verbatim error message shows nothing in Google.

It reads:
"The space on the hard drive is running low. Currently only xMB is free. Please free space by deleting unused files."

Now it shows 71MB free. Any thoughts?

A:Error Message "The space on the hard drive is running low" isn't true

so do you have 300 gb? or only 71 mb? because if its 71 mb, u have got some major cleaning to do. I doubt that though, some viruses clutter the hard drive. If you have plenty of room, and your still getting the message then you can follow these instructions to remove the annoying message.

Hi there!
First of all thanks for the great toturial and the forum.

I tried to do the in-place upgrade from Windows 10 (build 1607) in order to "repair" my system (there are some quirks I want to get rid off) using a freshly created USB (as per description), but it fails with the message "make sure that there is enough disk space available in your PC" (rough translation from german; see attached screenshot) without any further information.

It then automatically cycles back to the question on how to install (i.e. with keeping data and apps or without) and then back into the above mentioned error message.

This is what I already tried or made sure of prerequisites needed:
I have made sure that there is definitely enough disk space available. My C: partition (where windows resides on) is 106 GB large and has currently over 58 GB of free space available. The system partition that is supposed to be 350 MB is still 350 MB (I read something about this potentially being reduced to 100 MB by other tools ...).I have deinstalled the Kaspersky anti virus tool (reinstalled it now after several tries with no success).I have disabled (i.e. fully decrypted) the disk encryption bitlocker on all disks.

I know this question has been asked before as I've read about it all over the Internet. In order to get rid of the 'Low Disk Space' message it says to go to the registry and locate HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer, type a new value, etc. The only problem is I don't have an Explorer key. It ends at Policies.

I've tried everything. I've tried creating the key myself, and I've tried inserting the value into the policies folder. Nothing has worked. Can anyone help?

After our Dell Inspiron E1505 recently crashed , Dell talked us thru diagnostics and finally sent us a replacement(refurbished) Toshiba hard drive to install in our computer. After installing it, and reloading all of the software for Windows XP, MS Office Small Business 2003, drivers and utilities, using the discs that came with the computer, we have a "Found New Hardware" window that pops up - Wizard trying to install a "Base System Device" everytime we turn the computer on. It asks for a disc but none of my existing ones seem to be the correct one. I've given it permission to connect to the Internet to "find" the software but nothing works.
Also, since the crash/re-install, our C drive only has 12.4 GBs of total disc space, and of that, only 1.2 is still free space. My D drive has about 37 GBs of disc space. Could these two problems be connected? The computer was running so slow and we would periodically get a message "low virtual memory". This weekend, I moved as many of our documents as possible to the D drive to try and free up space. It's a little better, but why do I have such a small amount of disc space? Help!

I receive daily a "Low Disk Space" error message which is incorrect and in my estimation fradulent. It goes on to give an alternative to rectify this situation by offering to "Speed up your computer and remove all viruses that are on your computer." Of course all of this is for a price. If you opt in and then change your mind before you totally commit they offer the same package for half price. I refuse to be "sucked in" by this fraudulent company.

I have gone to the internet to try and find out how I may get rid of this enemy. I have used Malwarebytes, Microsoft Security Essentials and Microsofts Security fix program all to no avail. I'm getting the Low Disk Space message in Windows XP. Well, DUH...I knew that I was running out of room, so I bought an external hard drive with more space than I'll ever fill. Like an idiot...when I got the external.....I just went to folders...sometimes programs and used "send to" the now G: drive. Yes, I know, that was STUPID! Many of the same files are duplicated, etc so that they were copied and sent....not actually MOVED. Some of my programs don't even work correctly anymore.

I know that I can do a system restore....but I'm almost afraid that it might crash my pc. What is the easiest way to fix this problem and put everything else, except my bare essentials, on the bigger drive?

Hey there:

As far as I remember, I had six partitions when my machine was fresh (I just bought it like 3 months back)
- one for win xp
- one empty (where I would later install Windows 7)
- one where I'd store my documents
- one big empty where I planned to install Linux sometime later
- one big partition where I'd store everything else ('Main' partition)

There was a virus problem with XP - I had AVG installed, and the virus would infect all the exe files on my computr and AVG would simply delete it (the infected exe's) which made matters worse.

Then I installed Win 7 on another partition, and used it for some time without much trouble, except once when I tried some partition manager (so it would be easier when I'd install Linux - for now the Linux plan has been cancelled) when I lost two important partitions somehow (the last two I think, I don't remember exactly). Looking at Disk Management (Computer | Manage | Disk Management), and possibly doing some other things I don't remember I was able to get the partitions back the way they were before (one of them empty).

XP was still there on my PC, I started it once and it damaged the exe files of Win 7 as well. So after a few days I decide to reinstall XP then realised that the drives had disappeared again, this time I wasn't able to recover them. I checked Disk Management, and saw that the two partitions had been merged into one "free space" partition that didn't sh... Read more

While doing my daily security-briefing surfing, I stumbled upon the following page
https://www.zemana.com/WhatsNew/?ProductID=1
which, if you scroll down to August 1st, notes:  Zemana AntiLogger Free is discontinued.
That note also includes a link for a "limited time offer" for a free life-time license for Zemana AntiLogger Pro; I have not checked to see if that offer is still current.
ANYWAY:
Based on the descriptions given for the "Pro" product this past month, it's apparent that the "Pro" version is a major extension/change to just the Anti-Keylogger aspect of the 1.x series.   That is to say, "Anti-logger" PRO 2.x now includes all the features of Zemana ANTI-MALWARE (Real-Time Protection) in addition to the Anti-Logger component.  Known security threats are automatically blocked; Unknown applications are heuristically analyzed "in the Cloud":  Pandora Sandbox.   They've also added Ransomware Protection, and a Browser Cleanup module to remove unwanted toolbars and add-ons.
That's a big change!   Personally, I don't think I'd want all that --- even if I received a free lifetime license.   There's definite potential for conflicts with my other security programs.   And, unless there's a user-option to override the automatic blocks, I would be afraid in the event of a major false-p... I am trying to burn dvd's of home movies that i have on my computer. I have removed almost everything from the C drive which says it has only 2% available, and have either deleted it or moved it to the E drive which still has about 50% available. Why does my C drive say it is so full when there is almost nothing on it? How do i remove more stuff off the C drive so I can burn my home movies and safely get them off my computer and onto a DVD?

Here's the story. I bought this new Samsung 840 250GB SSD.
I first did a clean install of windows 7 on it and it worked fine. Windows installed without much problem and everything. Then something didn't look right about the partitions. It looked like because I had all my HDDs connected while installing windows on the SSD the windows created the system reserve on the old HDD rather than the SSD. So I went back and decided to start from scratch with all the HDDs except for the SSD disconnected. I tried reinstalling windows on it but this time it didn't work. I tried formatting the SSD and it just gave me an error saying windows couldn't install on a GPT disk. I went into bios, made sure the PC was booting from the UEFI DVD drive and it still kept giving me the same error.

So I then booted up my old HDD. I tried formatting my SSD and now I can't delete the partition!
This is what my disk set up looks like:

If I click "extend volume" on the "New Volume (G" disk, it says "there is not enough space on the disk(s) to complete this operation".
If I try to create a "new simple volume" on the "unallocated" partition, it says the same...

Have I destroyed my new SSD now?! I just want it to work like a new clean disk...

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

When using outlook exp 6.0, I receive this message. I got a solution from one of the other threads. The solution was to zero the count, in the registry, which worked. However, after several days, the same message returns "To free up disk space OE can compact messages". If I go into the registry and set the value to zero, it's fine for a few days, but still returns. Any idea how to make this setting permanent, or is there another solution for this problem? A:Free Up Disk Space" OE warning

I wouldn't recommend trying. OE needs to compact the messages, for despite the name, it is really deleting messages that you have deleted. I would suggest you read this page, but make note of this line near the bottom of the page: "Do not change the registry just to avoid compaction."

When I look into the "Performance" tab of my TaskManager then there are the following values:

Total: 4014
Cached: 1299
Available: 2697

Hmm, What is the difference between available and free space?
Shouldn't this be the same?

What means cache?

From my point of view there should be a value "occupied by running prgms" and "free".

Peter

A:Diff.between "available" and "free" physical memory?

Available is the only one that matters. Available shows what is capable of being used by Programs. Without paging other lower priority processes out of memory. It is a combination of both Cache and Free.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

Hi;
Had a sudden inability to go much further than a third or forth-level download on ANY given webpage and then PC would seize-up, requiring "cont+alt+del" in order to get freed-up. Thought perhaps I picked-up a bug of some sort during a recent google search, and went immediately to Panda and Trendmicro to perform both virus as well as malware scans. While the Panda scan was loading-up, I received the following error message....

... " DoPatch....dll reports error....Error "C:\WINNT\patch.utp"....unreadable or not a patch file..."

Was able to complete both scans. Nothing found other than tracking cookies.

I then did a file serch for the above and located it. It was installed TODAY apparently, and not by me, within minutes of the problem starting.

I'm guessing someone/thing slipped this patch into my WINNT file or modified it while I was doing the google search, so I have included a HJT scan below.

Hope this all makes sense and ties-out to something. Any help would be genuinely appreciated-
thanks

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

I keep getting a message telling me that "to free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact messages." It pops up every time I attempt to close OE. I've clicked to start the compacting process several times, but invariably I get a message telling me: "The folder is currently in use by Outlook Express or by another application." At that point I click Cancel to close it out. In other words, I cannot get the compacting process to run its course.

Unfortunately, this sequence of events keeps happening again and again, and I don't know how to stop it. I would greatly appreciate hearing from someone who might have an answer to this problem. Thank you.

I'm pretty new at posting so I'm not sure of the best way to do this. When I start to log on to the net, whether using IE or Firefox an error message having to do with "Google" occurs immediately. (I usually use my Google bar to go directly to the site I want.) I've taken a print screen so that you can see that message directly but don't know how I should get it to you. (I'm used to emailing such things --) As I proceed I get another message which I have also copied. This one starts with the words "Assertion Failed." If I continue I usually get a "script error" message, a copy of which I do not have at this time. If I tell the message that I will proceed with going to my chosen web site, the last several times the site has come up in multiplicity, most recently it appeared 16 times, one right after another, totally out of my control, (causing I believe Foxfire to crash), and then just a bit ago, using IE, the site I logged on to came up 7 times. I really have no idea what to do about this so I'm hoping that you can help me once again.

So I'm kind of stuck.. I currently have the problem where I am in an endless cycle of "loading files" -> "Windows Boot Manager" (see: How To Boot Into Safe Mode On Windows 8 (The Easy Way)).
I have tried to load all of the options -- and none successfully load.
I also end up at a OneKey Recovery as well.. unfortunately, the laptop does not have initial backup or user backup images.
I have a Windows 8 CD for repairing purposes.. however, I cannot load the BIOS/UEFI to change the boot order to load the optical drives first. I have also tried to remove the CMOS battery to fix it.. did not work. .
Also - Windows Boot Manager:
Windows Setup [EMS Enabled] -- does not load properly (leads to OneKey Recovery) Safe Mode (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Networking (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Command Prompt (doesn't load - tries to boot and load all files onto partition that is too small.. can't change partition?)

Most of the time it restarts without any issues and works fine right after the BSOD and then an hour or two later I get a BSOD again.

I have tried restoring to Last Known Good Configuration, startup repair, hard disk check, virus scans and I also uninstalled any recently added programs I could think of and cleared up more than 50% of my hard disk space. None of these seem to have helped and I still get BSOD regularly.

I have attached the folder from the SF Diagnostic Tool and would appreciate any advice!
Thank you!

Hello guys, the last week I've been strugling with these nasty BSODs. At first I thought it was my HDDs as ntoskrn.exe somewhat hinted towards that from googling it. My HDDs have been causing a lot of trouble earlier as well due to their somewhat long years of service. However, I've recently reformated my computer and installed W7 on a brand new Corsair Force GT 120GB SSD hoping the BSODs would go away, they didn't.

I googled BSOD and I stumbled upon this forum and I thought I'd give it a try. I'm somewhat desperate, as I need my computer working for both work, school and amusement.

I've been trying to run Memtest in order to test my memory but without any results. I'm also currently running on only on 4GB chip instead of two, to see if the problem still exists. Also, without any results.

This is the second time I'm writing this thread btw, I was just about to post it and my PC crashed.

Here is my two logs + dxdiag (last crash didn't generate a log oddly enough).

Here is additional hardware/gear that I use:

Razer Megalodon 7.1 Headset
Razer Naga
Logitech G19
Logitech C920 (Webcam)
Corsair 750W PSU

My temperatures are also good. Both CPU and MB idles at around ~25. GPU's all good too. I'm also using a Corsair 650D chassi with dustfilters at both air-income so dust is minimal. On top off this, I use airpressure to clean away dust somewhat regularly and I also did exactly this 2 days ago when I reinstalled the pc.

Ok so I'm using a custom visual style made by another user however I don't really like the buttons used that I mentioned above. The creator states it is acceptable to change the theme to however you like as long as you don't redistribute it anywhere.

Ok so I opened up the .msstyles file (using Restorator) located in the theme folder of this VS. I went into the images directory and located what seems to be the images used for the buttons. Intuitively, it seems like it would make sense to replace those images with different ones (perhaps from another visual style) and it should change them. However, would this actually work? Could the theme get messed up in some other way (like proportions or something if the new button images are smaller)? I don't know of any other way to change them that would be easy.

But I did run into another problem. For some visual styles I can't even locate those buttons in the images directory. Where else would they be?

I am using Windows 7 on my laptop and I have question about when to use "Home", "Work" and "Public" profile.

If I am logging in without setting password, and I am logging in network with "Public" profile, then will any other user, who can see my computer, be able to enter my computer and check the contents on my computer ?

I am connecting to a network and there are 6 other users connected to this network. In the set network location window, if I select the netwoek as "Home", does it mean that other 6 users will not be able to see my computer on network and if I use "Public", then all other six users will be able to see my computer on network ?

Thanks

Hi there,

I have started to receive the attached error message constantly this evening.

I have followed the instructions on the Microsoft help page for this topic:

I have been exploring how to make a backup so that if my computer dies I will have some record (I assume that is what it means) to put on a replacement computer to make it similar to the one I am using now

I use Firefox so tried their FEBE extension ....
FEBE Firefox Extension
but that didn't seem what I wanted

I then tried Tweaking.com Registry Backup as I already have their Windows Repair Pro which I was advised to install in case I ever have problems in the future with something going wrong but have not had to use (yet?) ....
Registry Backup
but didn't understand how I could get that on to a new computer.

So, I uninstalled both of those and have been trying to make a backup onto a memory stick but am running into problems that I will do my best to explain clearly.

I have tried two new 4GB memory sticks and followed the advice in Control Panel, Backup and Restore.

The Start, Computer screen confirms that Drive I (the memory stick) has 3.85GB free before I start.

All starts well but after a while I get the following message "The disk that your backups are being saved on doesn't have enough free space" and also says that I only have 1.39MB free of the 3.8GB.

So I found a video and tried to follow the instructions carefully ....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRdkLClj5rQ
and did so until 2.40 in. The previous steps I followed were fine but I simply could not find the Windows Backup file.

I followed the instructions to delete that backup and tried again. I... Read more

Best to make a full copy (image) of your hard drive, to recover. The Windows backup only backs up certain files. You are still left to reinstall most everything (including Windows). The Marcrium Reflect (a UK company), free version, will do nicely. But, you need something more than a disc or flash drive. A USB connected hard drive would probably be best.

This is very strange. I have two machines, both essentially identical. One is called MDR and the other is called DFW. They both have ATI video cards (HD4850 in DFW with Catalyst driver 12.3, and HD5770 in DFW with Catalyst driver 12.8). Same exact set of fonts installed on both machines.

Yesterday, I was forced to restore a system image on one of them (MDR) from two weeks ago. No problems existed at the time I took that system image, and there's no problem now that I've restored it.

However I now have an issue with Firefox on that machine (which has just been restored) on some forum sites (including this one, SevenForums) where the "line density" of text is increased from what it used to be. In other words, although the font is the same type and size as it used to be, for some reason the blank space between each line (i.e. the "leading") seems to be reduced from what it was previously so that the lines are "denser" and closer together vertically.

The actual width of the forum window is identical on both machines, but on the problem machine MDR it looks like more horizontal space of each line is being used than the same line uses on DFW, and the lines are closer together vertically on MDR.

What could have caused this now, when it certainly wasn't the case on the system when that image was originally taken? I immediately noticed something strange after the restore, and this is the objective evidence.

Is there some way to change the &quo... Read more

A:What caused font "leading" (vertical space) to shrink in Firefox??

Well... I have solved my own problem.

I don't know how/why the restore of the Macrium Reflect system image from 9/14 on MDR would have had any effect whatsoever on PREFS.JS for Firefox on that machine, but apparently it must have. Or, something else adjacent to that system image restore actually caused a change in PREFS.JS. Don't know.

But I'm going to do further research into this as I have time-based backups going well back and I will be able to absolutely confirm what I have now discovered as the explanation for this anomaly... which is that it was actually a change to one crucial line in PREFS.JS for Firefox which was responsible for the "leading" change on the SevenForums site, among others, because of the default font used on this site.

Anyway, just as an experiment, since both DFW and MDR are really almost identical (especially in my setup of Firefox on both machines) today I decided to just copy the PROFILES files for Firefox from my "working" machine (DFW) to my "shrunken" machine (MDR), to see if that would make the font display and "leading" on SevenForums now once again appear "more spacious". I actually first saved all of the current PROFILES contents, then deleted all of them, then copied all of the PROFILES contents from DFW to MDR, and then opened Firefox on MDR.

And, amazingly... sure enough IT DID FIX THE PROBLEM! The "leading" on SevenForums was once again back to "normal", as it h... Read more

Hi there,
Storage pool with two storage spaces created using Windows 8 Release Preview and then ported into Windows 8 RTM. I'm now trying to delete one of the storages spaces and getting this access is denied error message.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

A:Unable to delete Storage Space "Access is Denied" 0x00000005

I solved the problem for me.
Again... No file lock on the storage pool and no application is doing anything with this virtual disk. But it's not possible to remove it from storage spaces. This has nothing to do with ownership of the drive, access rights or an access of a process. I
had a clean windows setup with no programs installed. I'd say that this is a bug of windows!

Anyway here is my solution:
* Opened an explorer with "Computer" open.
* Opened "computer managment" and selected the storage list.
* I selected the storage pool which I wanted to delete but wasn't able to.
* Right click -> format... I think I have chosen NTFS but it's not so important...
* Warning that the drive is in use (what a nonsense) -> yes yes ok
* waited a few seconds until the bar with the free space disappeared at the "Computer" folder for this drive (on the explorer).
* stopped the format process. some error msgs that this couldn't be canceled and then he said he couldn't finish... (wtf ;))
* then back to the storage spaces overview... manage storage spaces... delete storage pool... pool disappeared... finish

hope this helps someone

Hi!

I'm trying to restore my computer to a previous point in time (earlier today) using the "System Restore" utility. After I select my restore point and click on "Next", I'm noting in the next screen ("Confirm disks to restore") that my C: drive is showing a "not enough space" status (as opposed to the expected "Ready to Restore" status). Do I need to do something as simple as clearing out files from "temp" directories?

To complicate matters slightly: I'm unable to boot into the Windows GUI. When I power up the computer, the "Startup Repair" window stating "Your computer was unable to start" appears and attempts to correct the problem. After a few minutes, it reports that it cannot repair the computer automatically and presents me with a "System Recovery Options" window. Since the initial Startup Repair was unsuccessful, I'm choosing not to select that option again...so I thought the "System Restore" option would be the next best approach. When I try to perform the System Restore, I run into the scenario that I detailed in the first paragraph of this post.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I'm more than happy to post additional information as required.

Thanks!

OK, I've had this happen before, such as when I installed AVG AV. I know the trick for the IRPStackSize reg edit.

However, I am encountering more and more of this on my network on CPU's and drives that never did this before. Strangely enough, it may affect only some of the drives on a CPU and not others. I've tried all different settings for the StackSize value and it does no good. None of these CPU's has had AV on them as they don't sit on the web and are on a closed network. I had one CPU that was fine this morning and on the next reboot I could not share a video folder any more, but every other share off it worked fine. Anyone else encountering this?

Thanks.

- What operating system/service packs are installed on the machines
- What is is the CURRENT irpstacksize value you have (knowing, of course, you have to reboot for it take affect)

Initially, for a fix, i'd try resetting all sharing and reboot. The turn sharing back on.

and how many shares do you on defined on each machine?

Win 7 backup facility works fine but after the backups have been made I use the "Manage space" tool via Win 7's "Backup and Restore" facility even though I'm using the very same Win 7 user and password I used to setup and run the backups. My user and password has "Administration" authority.

Now the backups are located on a Western Digital NAS. I can view all of the Win 7 backups there via this laptop via Windows Explorer. These backups are located on a "Public" folder on the WD NAS device on my LAN.

I've searched the web for clue/solutions. I even created another Win 7 user and password with "Administration" authority and used it to create backups in a different folder on this NAS device's "Public" folder. Same thing, no access via "Manage space" because "The backup location is not accessible." but I can view the backup files.

I'm hoping this is a simple fix. I'm trying to fix my elderly uncle's Asus laptop. System Repair pops up and fails. I booted to command prompt and found out it may be hard disk space. 400+ GB Hard drive (only one drive) and there's only 1024kb Free. I'm thinking that could be the issue. Hardware was checked out at the computer store and is fine. But they were going to charge him $200 to fix this failure to boot up issue. I told him to let me try first.

Can I possible "compact" this drive from the command prompt screen?

Note: I have no other Win 7 systems, so can't create a disk, and I have no original disks.
Also, no restore point has ever been set, and there are no partitions on the drive.

A:"Startup repair" failing - hard disk space issue?

Normally, I'd tell you to download a program or two to examine what's using the space or to clean up unnecessary files.

But with only 1024 kb of space, you probably can't install anything.

So--try this:

Start button, search box, type in "disk cleanup" and then poke the disk cleanup listing that shows up.

Let it clean up the drive and report back with how much space you then have.

You'll see an option in disc cleanup where it asks if you want to clean up system files as well. Say yes.

It should calculate how much space it will recover.

Let it run to completion. Might take a few minutes.

Then check your recycle bin to see if it's empty.

Report back with available space.

My wife has a two month old Lenovo ideapad with Windows 7. We are now getting alerts that the D partition is near full. Is this system taking multipul backups of the harddrive C and storing them all? What are my best options to have a safe backup, but not overloading the D partition? I do see in; Computer>System>Device Manager>Disk Drives>D Drive General tab that there are two options at the bottom.
option one, (not checked in my case) "Compress this drive to save disk space".
Option two, (checked) "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties"
Would selecting option one solve my problem? If this system is saving a snapshot of D over and over, it will only be a matter of time when option one will be overcome.
SO, I would think that there has to be a setting that will let partition D delete older backups...right?

Would it be a combination of selecting option one and changing a setting that would enable older backups to be automaticaly removed?

If your D drive is made for backup's only, you can delete all files exept the newest one.
But it's advised to make backup's on an external USB drive and change the frequency of backup's to your files and olso for images to your OS.

Hello, my system disk is an Intel X25-M G2 80Gb (74.4Gb) and I recently discovered that there is a rather huge discrepancy in used disk space.

According to disk properties I have used up ~73.7 of the 74.4Gb, but the actual files on the disk are only 51.7Gb if I show all hidden/system files, mark everything and check size and WinDirStat report the EXACT same thing.

I have no pagefile on my system disk, no hibernation file and no system restores (it's actually disabled).

So any ideas whatsoever what this could be? It's starting to become rather annoying to "lose" 25% of my system disk. I've run diagnostics and haven't been able to find anything, I've googled it extensively and found others with similar problems, but the only solutions I've found are pagefile, hibernation file, system restores and of course disk cleaning - all of which I have checked already.

I have been running a Dual-Boot Setup of XP Pro and WIN 7 successfully
for some weeks while I get familiar with WIN 7.
Recently I have almost exclusively been booting into WIN 7.
In this D.B. Setup The booted OS appers as Primary Partition on the C:
drive with the non-active OS as "Unallocated Space " on the D: drive.
This all happens on the No.1 Hard Drive.
No2 Hard Drive has been partitioned into several Partitions , the
First one as a Primary Partition with the remaining Partitions as
Logical drives.
Today , when I booted into WIN 7 , there was no sign of the second
hard drive and its Partitions even although both drives ( Serial
Drives) were recognised in the initial part of the Bios screen during
this bootup.
When I looked in Disk Management , I saw that the first Partition on
the second hard drive appeared normally as a Primary Partition but
that all remaing space on this drive was shown as "Unallocated Space"
I then re-booted into the XP OS .
This showed the second hard drive and all its Partitions normally ,
i.e. with its first Partition as the Primary and all subsequent ones
as Logical Drives.

Hy Guys,

This is my first forum post albeit with a problem and here it is:

I wanted to make a Win7 bootable installation USB without formatting and so google came up with the following tutorial:

How To Make Bootable Windows USB Without Formatting

But it did not work and eventually bricked the USB/un-bootable, though the data is still there.

I was able to successfully recovered the data using Photorec. The main challenge is to reinstate the USB state prior to bricking it.

I found Teskdisk (cgsecurity.org) and analyzed the drive. Testkdisk detects 2 partitions. "(Space conflicts between two partitions) - 2 * Sys=74 & 1 * Sys=6E." (the partition structure as shown in linked image).

I also posted this on cgsecurity forums, but haven't received any resolution nor found a solution elsewhere:

!!!PLS DO CHECK THIS POST!!!
https://forum.cgsecurity.org/phpBB3/...php?f=6&t=6384

But Testdisk doesn't offer options to fix conflicts and I'm no expert in fixing MBR issues so really don't know how to fix it?

How do I reinstate the USB state prior to bricking it?

Currently, using Win 7 (32bit). USB drive - file system prior to bricking: FAT32.

Can any buddy help me out. Infact I also tried the EasyBCD (https://neosmart.net/forums/) but they couldn't help either.

Can anybuddy/guys take a look and help me get the usb to pre-bricking state.

Thanks

Hello all,
I posted this in Microsoft Answers, but I'm not convinced the "Support Engineers" there all know what they are talking about...

The story: My university has their computers set up with multiple input languages, none of which I use. Moreover, NetBeans (which I use frequently) uses the CTRL+Space shortcut for code completion, so I'd like to be able to use it without switching my keyboard to Chinese.

I've made a script that will customize the computer I'm using (because so many settings they use are messed up), so I'm looking for a way to do this in the registry or the command line, rather than the control panel. To make things more interesting, these computers have Deep Freeze on them, so any changes made to them do not stick around after rebooting the machine.

Short version:
Does anyone know of a way to disable the CTRL+Space hotkey (or muti-language input in general) via command line or the registry that does not require a reboot?

Thanks in advance!

A:Disabling language switch hotkey "CTRL+Space"?

Open Control Panel, then go to Region and Language. Click on the tab Keyboards and Languages. Click on the Change keyboards button, and go to the Advanced Key Settings. That's where the shortcuts for switching langauges are defined.

When I couldn't delete the student office trial (which came installed with my HP laptop purchase) from "add/remove" due to having deleted first, a different but associated program (can't recall the name), I followed these tedious instructions found on this link - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218

The problem is...I noticed that instead of freeing up disk space, it took up more. How can I remove this trial completely to free up space?

This can be a problem.

Also, I would say that fix from MS applies only to when the proper procedure for the uninstall of Office is followed but the end result is not what we expected so basically that didn't wasn't any help.

We need to know what other mystery "associated" program is.

Hello everyone,

I am currently a new registered user and was wondering if this was the correct place to post my problem. I have a issue with my Local Disk (C:/ Drive) and was wondering what was taking up so much space. I have a 1TB hardrive, currently on my Local Disk I have 136GB free of 454 GB. However, when I add up what I can find when opening the drive, it doesn't add up anywhere near the 317GB that it says has been used.

Now, I have currently installed...CCleaner, Eusing Regcleaner, AVG Free 8.0, and TreeSize, all of which I have run various times (still learning about TreeSize).

BEFORE I was getting scared because I had even less memory free (approx. 74.9GB of 454GB). But after running a Disk Cleanup...it knocked it down to it's current state. It still doesn't explain how I have so much memory used.

My only thought now is that there are extra copies of my folders and files. Or most likely this has something to do with Vista's "System Restore". I am not very adept at using this PC. Whatever advice you guys can give...try to dumb it down for me and tell me where to go (e.g. Control Panel>Systems>etc..)

And my System Specs are incomplete because I don't even know where to go to get all that information! So if you need to know something about my PC tell me where I might find it or just look at what I have for my System Spec.

Thank you very much, I'll be checking my post at least once a day so I'll try to respond quick if any of you pros have an idea... Read more

A:Local Disk/System Restore/"eating" up space

Hello Mike, and welcome to Vista Forums.

This tutorial will help you see how much disk space is being used by System Restore and how to adjust the MAX size it can use. With a 1TB drive, it will have a high MAX by default.

System Restore - disk space

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hello. I am having trouble with a message in Action Center in Windows 8.1. It is saying "Check Backup Disk Space" and I cannot hide the message. I had Windows 7 File Recovery setup with Windows 8.1, but now after the upgrade, the message is "stuck." Can this be fixed? These two links explain it perfectly:

Windows 8.1 Update - Check backup disk space - Microsoft Community

Windows 8.1, can't remove "Check backup disk space" error in action center - Ars Technica OpenForum

Please help. Thanks.

A:in my internet options, my "amount of disk space to use" is 8591 MB..?

It's down to preference really but you don't really need it to be set more than 200 mb's.

Hope that helps :)

its listed on my disk clean up list.v can i safely delete these? I keep getting low available memory alerts.

A:i have like 11Gb of space taken up by "archived Windows Error Reports"

Hi Shellysman Welcome to Seven Forums.
Yes you may delete the archived error files. The low memory warning is not due to them though because they would be on your hard drive (HDD) and not in memory.

Hi there,

I am facing a problem with the backup program of Windows 8. My computer (Asus with 250SSD) disk is new and I just installed my programs. Now I want to create a System Image using Windows. The image should be around 50go. Everything works fine until I get a message error saying my external disk does not have enough space, which is impossible since it is completely empty (500go).
Did anyone have ever meet that problem and/or have advices to help me? I would like to solve that and not be forced to used another way to backup.

Thank you,

Vari

I am attempting to transfer all of the files form an NTSF 250 GB external drive to an empty FAT32 250 GB internal drive via USB.

I keep getting an error message that says "Cannot copy (filename): There is not enough free disk space. Delete one or more files to free disk space, and then try again. To free space on the drive by deleting old or unnecessary files, click Disk Cleanup".

This is not true though, as the destination drive has more than enough space for the transfer.

A:False error - "not enough disk space" durring transfer

You cannot transfer all the files because many will be in use...

You will ned to make a drive image with a program like Ghost, or you can even use its drive copy feature.

It will be cake to copy an entire drive.
