Solved: accidentally changed removable disk, now changed every program?

Q: Solved: accidentally changed removable disk, now changed every program?

Hi all-
Apologies in advance as I am not exactly technologically sound.
I tried plugging in my digital camera today, and though it did not come up, I hunted down the Removable Disk (E) drive, which I figured would open it. It told me that I had to choose a program to open it with, so I chose some kind of picture viewer. Then all the icons on my desktop turned into said picture viewer, and I cannot open anything but that program from the desktop. Also, when I go into Programs and try to open them, they don't work there either. Help!
I am using Windows 7. I have tried System Restore but it told me that it could not complete it and gave me some kind of error message with 0x80070005. It recommended that I turn off my protection or whatever to complete it, but I have Norton 360 and no idea how to turn it off!
Any help is greatly appreciated- we just bought this computer in November and now my husband is ticked off!

A: Solved: accidentally changed removable disk, now changed every program?

Welcome Tuckersmom !
When I connect my camera to either of our computers, the camera itself indicates on the viewer how to handle the pictures....
To replace the icons on the desk top, right click any empty place and select refresh, I think this should restore them for you.
My daughter uses Norton 360 and we have found that it disables the system restore. She does regular backups with Norton 360. If you have done that, you should be able to restore from one of those backups.
GOOD LUCK
Let us know how it goes.

Hello.

I was working on my computer and by accident I have changed the name of the folder that is on the start menu with my user files. My username remains the same.

The way I think it happened is I was messing with showing the "User's file" folder on Desktop option and somehow I changed the name.

This is how it looks:

My username is not "J" but now I see that in the start menu instead of my real name.

And as I said when I boot my username is correct and if I browse by path I see C:\Users\Pether.

Does anyone have any ideas about what might have gone wrong?

this is very confusing to me ive never seen it so i found a way back onto the internet by using a shortcut i had.

not even sure how to start this. i dont know exactly what i did but everything was changed. i was going to try to watch a movie thats on my laptop, it said 'avi' and when i clicked on it nothing happened. i dragged it into itunes to see if it would play there, nope. i right-clicked it, picked 'open with' VLC, still nothing. right clicked it again and chose windows media center, nothing happened. i tried transfering the folder with the option available in media center, still didnt play.

when i closed media center i saw all my desktop stuff was changed to open with media center, i knew immediatly i screwed up pretty bad somewhere. i right clicked internet explorer and changed it to open with internet explorer, it then changed everything to open with internet explorer. when i clicked on internet explorer it didnt open, but it did open the download bar as if i downloaded it. it says "Internet Explorer.Ink" or .lnk. when i click open, the window comes up but closes right away.

can someone help me by telling me how to get everything back to normal?

A:[SOLVED] changed one thing to open with a different application and it changed everyt

It sounds like what you've done is associate a .lnk file (shortcut type) with an application and now all shortcuts will run with that application. The avi file you were referring too may be just that as well: a shortcut.

This has also been known to be caused by a malware infection, in which case if you suspect it, you'll have to report it to our security team in the appropriate Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help subforum.

This may help with the situation.

Hi,
I've never had problems logging on to my regular office account: "OfficeDomain\MyName1234" but for whatever reasons unknown to me, my accoun t seemed to have been changed at the PDC to "OfficeDomain\User1234" today!!!

Ever since, I've not been able to logon to "OfficeDomain\MyName1234", but I am able to login to "OfficeDomain\User1234" with my old password for "OfficeDomain\MyName1234".

My problem is that all my user profiles stored under MyName1234 are inaccessible to User1234. I tried renaming "C:\Documents and Settings\MyName1234" to "C:\Documents and Settings\User1234", but Outlook complains and denies when i tried to access my mails whilst logged in as User1234.

Does anyone know how I might've renamed my user name, and how I could revert it back to what it was?

I have the local Admin login but can't change any of User1234's properties in Control Panel > User Accounts.

Please help..

Many thanks

A:Accidentally changed a .pst association

First, I don't have Windows 7.

What happens when you right click on a .pst file?

Do you get a menu including 'Open with' ?

In XP, you would look for Microsoft Outlook 2007 in the list of installed programs,
select it and check the 'always use' box.

I would have thought it would be something similar in Win 7.

Sorry to be vague, perhaps a Win 7 user can assist further.

You can't just go to My Computer, right-click on the drive and rename it? I think even if you turn it off and restart the computer, you would be able to go into the BIOS and change the master hard drive to "N" or whatever. It's complicated, so I suggest you get someone knowledgeable with computer hardware to help you.

I accidentally (don't ask me how!) changed a file type when I right clicked on a .tps file. Now instead of saying TPS file in the Type column when I'm looking in the directory, it lists a program file installed on my computer. Is there a way to get these .tps files working again? I tried looking in my backups of the files but since the "always use this program to open these files" box was checked, it also changed the type in the backups. Thanks in advance.

A:accidentally changed file type

Here's a simple solution.
right click on the .tps file and click on properties
go to where it says open with and next to it, you should see change
click on it and choose the program that originally opens .tps

I assume you now cannot boot back to your old OS either. There are tools that can help you get data off you HDD if there is no other ways. And then you'll need to reformat and install no doubt.

Okay, so what I was trying to do was simply block one user from viewing a partition on my computer, which I thought would be simple enough...

So I go into the partitions security settings (I'll point out now that I use this partition like an extra hard drive, nothing runs on it) while in the setting I change the Users option to Deny all. I apply the setting under some assumption that my Admin account wouldn't be affected, to my bad luck I was wrong (there was a warning but I ignored it...cause rules don't apply to me jk -.- )
Now as I was the admin I had no trouble turning the settings back to being able to get inside the partition, but it had so many sub folders upon sub folders that most of my files are still locked, and the simple solution is to keep doing this downward, but I did that for awhile and it was taking too long... I have a bazillion of these subfolders

Anyhow, I was looking for an option to bring it back to the default, and nothing I've found has worked so if you could either direct me somewhere that'll help or give me some instructions that be amazing!

Alright, so I wanted to connect my Nintendo Ds to my wifi, and in order to do that I needed to find the WEP key. So I looked online and came across another forum where people were asking how to also find it for their Nintendos. I found out how to locate it, or generate it, I connected to it and now it works fine. ...Except in doing so I guess apparently I changed the password??? And now I guess I'm supposed to use that key to connect to the Internet. I have two laptops which are connected wirelessly to my computer which is plugged into the main router. I also have an iPod touch, which I am using to write on this from. It was pretty easy to connect my iPod back to the Internet, all I did was type in the new key....as for the laptops.... I am completely lost on what to do. They are both Thinkpad windows vista. And the router is Linksys. When I go to connect to a network, it says the settings saved on this computer do not match the requirements of the network. .....So I don't really know how to change the settings I right clicked to go to properties and tried to change the network key to the new WEP key under WPA Personal. I know I'm doing something wrong, but I don't know what and I'm completely lost as to what to do. Also, would changing my password back to the way it was before not allow me to connect wirelessly with my Nintendo? Please Help me!!!!

A:Accidentally changed password and now can't access Internet :S. Help?

assuming you change the password and security type in the router - which it sounds like you have

you now need to remove th saved profiles on the PC for your wireless connection as it will be using WPA

the best way is to delete the profiles and then reconnect to the wireless connection where you will be prompted for the new wep password
How to remove Wireless Profiles - for Vista and Windows 7
http://uk.tp-link.com/article/?id=281
http://www.home-network-help.com/delete-wireless-network.html
- Vista/Windows7:
- delete the wireless profiles
Start> control Panel> classic view> network and sharing center> manage wireless networks

Delete the profiles
you will then have to enter the wireless security key for any networks you connect to - so make sure you know the correct password , and not using an incorrect password at all

All commands for repair are automated in Win7 Startup Repair. Only if no OS shows to repair do you need to sometimes goose it with bootrec, since bootrec is automated once Repair runs. Startup Repair

Hello,

I hope this is an appropriate forum for asking this. I was following method #2 of this guide ( http://www.wikihow.com/Customize-the-Size-of-the-Windows-7-Taskbar-Icons ) and I made a mistake in the registry key that it suggested. I didn't read closely enough, and rather than creating a new key called "MinWidth", I edited the "AppliedDPI" registry key (it appears to be the one selected in the screenshot). Dumb mistake that could have been avoided, but now I need to fix it.

This really messed with the sizes of text and other GUI elements (the minimize, restore down, and close icons in the upper right portion of windows are HUGE), and changing it back to the default value (96) does not do anything. I didn't change any other registry settings. Is there some way to fix this that I am not realizing? The computer is practically unusable now unless I change to a different user.

Thanks!

[Earlier, was suggesting trying Windows CLassic theme as a test.]

After you changed the registry back, you did already try a shutdown & coldpost/boot, correct?  I found out that some change-backs take hold after a shutdown & re-power-up.

If you're dual booting, keep pressing F8 at bootup to get to safe mode to do your dirty work from there.

If you're not dual booting, I don't think F8 works by default.

autorun.inf in C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\SecurDisc. I don't know if this is malware or a legitimate file.

I've run flash disinfector and panda active scan. I've also done several other scans (kaspersky, ad-aware, spybot s&d) running in safe mode. They have not detected any threat either.I've then removed the offending key in the registry but it reappeared with the next boot.

My computer's general condition is that I constantly keep losing internet connection, it runs too slowly, the screen is frequently stalling. Some regular programs fail to launch at start-up and it takes quite a long time for my system to load. Altough no update is being performed, Kaspersky's proactive defense gives alerts about my system files (like svchost.exe, iexplore.exe, keyboardmanager.exe etc) being changed. The firewall also gives alerts about outbound udp connections attempted by svchost.exe or explorer.exe on different ports that they did not use to.

When she got back the PC, the hard disk had been modified -- she didnt have all of her applications and her documents and personal stuff were in a new folder with her name. I wonder if if is necessary to install a new HD when the MB is replaced. Wouldn't the previous hard drive work with a new board? Thank you for your help.

Today, I wanted to use an application called Zadig, which replaces the drivers for USB type devices. However, I accidentally replaced the driver for the integrated webcam! Applications like Skype will no longer recognize the webcam. Additionally, after checking the device manager, the integrated webcam is now located under USB devices... My computer thinks it is a USB device now. I uninstalled the driver and deleted the driver software, and restarted the computer. However, it just reinstalled the incorrect driver, and it is still under the USB category in device manager. I cannot seem to find the integrated webcam driver  for the XPS 15 9550 on the dell website. Can somebody please help me out?

I did this using this program - all .exe file icons changed, however, with them changed ALL the shortcuts to all the programs that I have on my laptop - now they all look the same.

I can't figure out how to change it all back.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Turned on my comupter this morning and got the following errors: I have not opened the computer tower, I have not added or removed any drives:

Primary IDE channel NO 80 Conductor cable installed
Flopply Disk 40 missing

Then restarted system and got this message:
"cpu has been changed or CPU Ratio change failed"

Hit F1 to continue or DEL go to into setup

I have gone to CMOS set up and used f7 to optimize and hit f10 to save
come back with the third error.

this computer has always done a memory test when it starts up 99% of the time I let it run, total startup time if I do, 10minutes, if I skip memory test still 10 minutes.

Now slower than ever trying to start up

I have read your various threads and none I found discuss these errors just suddenly apprearing. This computer was a built from scratch by an IT friend of mine who has moved away I have all the documentation that came with it.

I have tried system restore back one week did not work, I was following ASK tech page guide and downloaded REGSERVO program came back with 6800 errors and wanted 39.00, well as you know the economy is in the tank and I do not have the extra money, but i do have the extra time if someone could walk me through what to do.

I use Norton utilities and clean the drive/registries/and explorer weekly.
Please send any advise possible
Thank you
NascarLady

A:sudden error message CPU has been changed or CPU Ratio changed failed

REGSERVO is a Rogue program that tells you, you have problems and "we will fix them for you for $39.00!" "But. Wait! for an extra amount for shipping and handling we will really screw your Windows installation up!"

Of course they make you wait until they find the registry errors to tell you that you have to pay $39.00. I just did a google search on REGSERVO and the only ones that give RegServo good reviews are, and hear is the drum roll, Regservo itself. Stay away from any of these programs that say they will fix your registry then want money to fix the problems they found.

Also there is no need to run any registry cleaner. More often than not it will not help your problem or speed up your computer, and can indeed break your registry to the extent of having to reinstall windows.

If this is the system in yur Computer specs, have you been having any problems with needing to adjust the date and time lately?

When I start the pc it gives the message above, also it does not let me save the cmos settings for cpu i.e. it just hangs but it does let me change the settings for date time etc so I think it rules out a bad cmos battery.

(using win7 x64)

I used a program called "Types" to change a few file icons in windows. I did the same thing on a laptop but used a different program so I didn't get this problem. After I changed the default icon for .exe every exe program changed to the default icon I had selected. Not just the programs I already had on the computer but it uses the default icon for new programs downloaded and even ones viewed on disc. And it changed all shortcuts to the default icon.

I've been able to restore most of the shortcuts through the properties menu. Interesting thing is I have to do it twice on every icon since the first attempt seems to do nothing (and refreshing the desktop doesn't work).

I've downloaded additional icon programs that have a restore setting but that hasn't worked. I've tried a registry fix but that doesn't work. Neither has using the windows restore point. I've gone into the registry itself and changed around the default icon for the exe. Sure it'll change the icon but no exe programs with their own icons will return to their original state. My last attempt has been to delete the icon cache and that has also failed.

So now that google has let me down I'm hoping someone here can help me. A big thank you in advance cause this is really annoying.

By default, you have both a "C:\Users\Brendan\Documents" and "C:\Users\Brendan\SkyDrive\Documents" folders. These are not the same folder.

Hi I accidentally changed default permissions on the application data folder and now everything is messed up.

Why I did this I do not know but I un-hid the folder and selected "apply changes to sub folders and files".

At first outlook would not work and I sort of fixed that by un-checking "hidden" directly on the Outlook folder but I now see many apps are giving me "Access Denied" errors. This grieves me to no end and I dread having to do a re-build on my pc which will take countless hours.

I tried doing a system restore but the restore failed and it would not let me restore to an earlier checkpoint. I tried an XP repair with the system disk (which took 45 minutes) and that did not change any permissions on the application data folder.

PC's make me want to hang myself... LOL

any advice on what to do with the application data folder????
Am I doomed and have to backup all data and rebuild???

PLEASE I beg for sound advice!
Thanks in advance and Happy New Year

I am using Win7 Ultimate 64/ 8MB ram /Intel i5 CPU / Gigabyte MOBO

I was changing themes by using the control panel appearance section
and selecting the various themes available including High
Contrast, just to see how they looked.
After doing so and returning to the theme I had been using for some while
I noticed that three program icons had been replaced by the generic icon that usually indicates there is no program associated with a file.
Other programs are fine.
However, the programs still work but the .exe file ( in the programs folder)and the icon that shows up in the task-bar as well as the short-cut icon is not that of the program but the "generic" icon as mentioned.
I tried reinstalling the three programs but the same icon appears each time after
re-installation.
It is not such a big problem as I can use the program but I wonder why this could have occurred and if in fact it has anything to do with me selecting various themes.

The programs are
Diagram Designer / Edrawmind map / wordformat2.
which I believe are all 64 bit compatible and did have the program icon when originally installed.

Any suggestions to reinstate the correct icon?

A:Program changed when install in Win 7

If you still have the old XP machine (or even just the hard drive) then first thing to do is image it using disk imaging software.

Then I would attempt to image it back to a virtual instance using Windows Virtual PC

You may need to use one of the many articles regarding moving Windows XP to new hardware or motherboard as it will probably BSOD to start with. (But you might get lucky!) or (and this is not a recommendation, and I have not used Acronis like this for moving to new virtual hardware, only real hardware) software such as Acronis True Image Premium can image and restore to "new hardware"

But, if you can get it running, you should be able to continue to use this software when you next move machines (you will need to do some conversion to Hyper-V at that point, but you can cross that bridge if and when)

The harder method would possibly be to use Process Monitor to monitor which files and registry entries the software accesses on startup of the software, and copy those files and registry entries across, but that is beyond the scope of an answer such as this

I have an old computer with a Gigabyte GA7ZX motherboard W/Duron 800 processor, 256 mgs of ram. I have two 20g hard drives with one as the master containing the OS and some programs and data. The other was partitioned into three drives and had data, a few programs and backups. I had some corrupted files so I reinstalled XP. Everything went well but when I had occasion to check the drives, I found that the reinstall had put the operating system on one of the partitions in the second drive and changed that partition to C and changed the former master disk to D. I would like to get the reinstalled operating system back on the master drive and its name changed back to C. What I want to do is have 2 primary partitions and one extended partition on the C drive with a different operating system in each primary partition. The second hard drive would be made an image of the first drive so that if one of the drives should go to pot (they are both two or three years old) I will be able to survive with no problems.

I bought PartitionMagic to help with the changeover but I am confused about what I should do first and how to proceed from there. Can someone help on old codger out?

Hello,

A friend of mine has brought his PC (XP Pro) to me to sort out the mess that it has become over the years and well I have most of it sorted but am stuck on the one issue. Can someone help please?

Basically when you open up My Computer you see a set of icons and one of these is the C: disk icon. However in this PC the C: disk icon has been changed to something that looks like a box with a CD in front of it.

When you double click this icon (to open the C: disk) a programme is launched that tries to install some software. This programme runs for a while then pops up a box with a number GO and NO GO installed criteria icons displayed and well basically the install fails because of the OS version (XP).

When this install programme is running I started Task Manager and see that this install programme is HPZCHK01.EXE which I think is part of some HP software for scanner/printer package.

Or may it be related to some thing called All-In-One.

Can any one help please as I would like to uninstall this C: icon trap but try as I may I have had no luck.

Many thanks in advance IMK

A:C: Disk Icon Has Been Changed (HPZCHK01.EXE)

Hello IMK

Look for AUTORUN.INF in C:\
If you find one, delete it.

Is there an HP scanner installed?

I reinstalled windows 7, 64 bit recently but post intallation, the secondary hard drive didn't show up out of my two hard disks. In disk management it showed DYNAMIC HARD DISK with an arrow sign.
I then followed a few forums and used hexeditor and changed the 0C1 sector from 42 to 07. On rebooting the drive showed up but only one partition (I had 2 partitions on that HD), on double clicking it showed an error "DISK STRUCTURE IS CURROPTED AND UNREADABLE". In disk management the partition is now "RAW, HEALTY PRIMARY PARTITION"
Data in the HD is very important, how can i recover it.
Any help would be really great.
Thanks

I just installed a new motherboard, CPU, memory, and video card into my computer. I'm not looking to salvage my old OS install, and have all important data backed up, so I planned to just put the hardware in and boot off my windows disk to do a format and reload. However no matter what I do I can't get windows setup or an OS to load. When loading the installer it locks up at the windows splash screen. I've tried booting off the hdd and it does the same thing. I tried it in safe mode and it locks up before it finished loading all the files. I also tried booting mini XP off my Hirens 15 disk and that locks up at the splash screen too.

So at this point I ran memtest to see if it was my ram causing problems but it all tested ok. So anyone got any idea on how to boot off my disk so I can format and reload?

A:Changed hardware, now won't boot off hdd or disk.

What windows installation disk do you have - is it a retail disk or a disk burnt from your previous recovery partition.

Also, for a test try to install a Linux distro - maybe Ubuntu and see what happens. Even a live CD may give you some insight.

Provided your hardware funtions properly, I suspect there is a driver problem. But that is not certain at this level of info.

I have just finished updating my Vista x64 Ultimate to Windows 7 x64 Professional. I am in the process of reinstalling all my software and I have observed something usual.

In Vista when I use Control Panel>Programs and Features, most icons represent the installed programs. In Windows 7 many, but not all, are showing a generic icon for programs that Vista recognized correctly.

Is this a known issue or can I do something to get the program icons back?

A:Some program icon changed to generic icons.

Hello HDProman, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Could you post a screenshot of this in your Programs and Features window to see if any of the other members here have the same icon displaying as you for the affected programs as well in their Windows 7?

Hello, i bought my acer laptop with windows 7 and recently upgraded it to windows 10. I want to enhance and optimize the system by formatting it.

If i do the factory reset from the acer eRecovery Management, will it downgrade the system to windows 7 with all the acer-factory-programs or will it keep windows 10 with all the factory programs?

It's crucial not to miss these programs cause i can't find and download all of them via acer's site. It doesnt include programs for old-supported laptops (like mines).

I accidentally changed all my rar File extensions..
can anyone tell me how do i get it back to Default
because i changed the default opening to i.e and now its not acting right
how to restore to default file extension?___________________________

But unlike the responses you gave him, i dont have the system restore option .

Please note every single exe file is now a zip file..

I cant backup cause the backup file is a zip. i cant find where to or how to get a key in the registry changed, cause regedit.exe is now a zip. my choice are very limited. i have a recent back up stored on ext drive but to execute it i'd have to run c:/windows/system32/sdclt.exe...... also a zip file..

Can anyone please help me restore my pc, b4 resorting to a full system reinstall.

Just remember if your method requires a .exe file hidden anywhere in windows It wont work. Your haste and support is greatly appreciated.
ps i would screenshot but mspaint.exe aint working either

Hello Darntech, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Download and merge the EXE option in the tutorial below to see if it may be able to help after restarting the computer. It will restore the default associations for EXE files.

I am completely happy with my Win 7 Pro x64. Recently I noticed my monitors screen blackening. I went straight to Power Options in the Control panel and found my settings of never turn off monitor and never turn off pc. because I have had a bad infected time I had lots of antivirus programs and optimizers. Now my power settings are okay but something is changing the computer. How does it do it. I've gone through checking the optimizers and removing them but the monitor still blacks-out. I can't believe the antivirus programs would be allowed to change my settings. I have always believed Win 7 Pro is so well for the user .Any help please?

A:Some program has changed my monitor times so it closes down

Three things come to mind, assuming this is a config issue: 1) power settings, 2) screen saver settings, 3) video drivers

I've been running Win7 x64 for months, and the only problem I get is that after a few months, it just goes belly up and i get a BSOD, just today it happened again, no hardware chages, no software changes, it was working fine when I turned it off lastnight.
The only way I fixed it today was i noticed in the bios my boot disk order was changed, i moved my drive 0 back to place 1 and it started up. I would like some one to please look at my dump file to see if it's something else please. Thanks in advance.

I have just installed an old program "MAME32 version 0.95" on my Win7. The program works fine except that one feature doesn't work properly.

So I right click the program exe file and enable compatibility mode and select Windows XP (SP3), when I try again, the same problem happens.

Well, it's not a big deal so I just go back by uncheck the compatibility mode but now, I notice that Win7 has added a shield to the program logo. There's no shield before I try the compatiblity mode. I don't like it. I uninstall and reinstall the program and the shield is still there. How to get rid of it.

A:program logo changed by win7, how to restore it back?

Hello Summer4Ever,

This is normal. The shield overlay icon on the program's icon is just to indicate that the program will Run as administrator (elevated) when you run it, and give you a UAC prompt requiring you to "Allow" it permission to run first.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Howdy folks!

Here's a weird one. Went over to a friend's house today to work on there computer as it 'wasn't working right'.

I noticed that all the icons on the desktop had their names changed to include numbers (ex Chrome(2345)), Inter Explorer(2942). The numbers seem to be random. Obviously trying to launch one of these did not work.

I then went into the Program Files folder and its seemed all the exe files and dll files were also renamed to include numbers...

I have never seen this before, and doing a search through these forums, and malware removal guides, it doesn't seem to have a fix (other than manually renaming the files one at a time, removing the number part.

I have included a screen shot for reference. In the screen shot I renamed the Itunes.exe, but it still would not run because the dll files are 'missing'.

Thanks for any input, but I think we are looking at a backup--->rebuild at this point.

Jim

My computer is a HP SFF 8300, running Windows 10 Pro upgraded from Windows 7 Pro with a 500GB boot disk and a second 2.5" 500GB disk recovered from my failed laptop, strictly to easily pull files when needed.

I have been bringing a SuperMicro SuperServer to life in the back room of the house.
I installed Windows Refurbished 7/SP1 from a Microsoft DVD and used the Windows 7 Pro license from the side of the HP SFF 8300 to install Windows 7 Pro. I used WSUS Offline to get all the updates into the SuperServer to get Microsoft Windows Update working, and yes, finally success. My intent was to get the SuperServer to a point where I could run the Microsoft Windows 10 compatibility tool on it as I would prefer to be running Windows 10 Pro to use the system as a workstation. Unfortunately, tere is no such thing so I used the Media Creation tool to download an ISO image and RUFUS to burn that to a 4GB flash Drive.

I went to the front of the house, and sent my youngster an email from Thunderbird email client on my HP SFF 8300, and I left Thunderbird running and probably Microsoft Edge and Firefox as well.

I went back the SuperServer and whiel waiting for RUFUS to finish was looking at the commands available with SLMGR.exe.
The Computer properties changed from stating 3 days until automatic activation of Windows to 2 days until automatic activation of Windows and I wanted to stop that from happening so I could finish working on the Windows 10 installation. I ran a co... Read more

The internal hard drive in my 4 year old Aspire Z5610 cooked itself this weekend. I could not match the drive exactly so I put in a new 1TB hard drive. Of course, the old recovery partition was cooked along with the user partition and this drive does not have the Acer recovery partition. I used the 3 recovery disks and these seemed to work to a point. But when the system configures the services for the first time, an error pops up saying the installation cannot be completed on this machine and to start again. Well, I started again and again and again. Same error. I found a hack to get me past that and although it leaves me with a Windows 7 I can log into, lots of things don't work. In particular, the Windows update service will not turn on; this is a major problem. I cannot turn on indexing. Also eRecovery doesn't recognise the DVD drive (the internal one stoped working a while ago so I use an external USB drive that in all other respect works perfectly). The Acer system information detects the machine perfectly with the serial number and SNID. I would be astonished if the Windows 7 OEM build has been designed to only work with one type of harddrive - which is the same manufacturer just a slightly larger capacity. So I can only think there is something else not quite right but I haven't spotted it yet. Any ideas?

Hi all. So, I accidentally made C:/ the active partition and my computer wasn't able to boot. I used a Windows 7 disk to access the "repair my computer" option, which made it possible for my computer to boot again. When I went back to disk management after my computer booting successfully, I noticed that C:/ is now the active partition. Do I need to change this back again before restarting my computer or has Windows somehow made it so my computer boots from C:/ and not the System Reserved partition?

Thanks

A:Accidently changed active partition in Disk Management

You should be fine with [C] as the active system partition.
The repair "built the boot code" on the [C] drive to fix the boot problem.

I don't use a System Reserved partition, so my boot code has always been on a "OS" partition.

I don't know what use your System Reserved partition is now, and maybe it could be deleted ?

Hi there, please can you help ???

Last night i (rather stupidly) downloaded and installed a facebook application which would notify me of facebook updates. It looked genuine, and i'm always the cautious type, but i believe this was the root cause to my problems, with hindsight.

Shortly after i ran this program i started getting pop-ups trying to tell me that i had windows viruses etc and to buy their software. Obviously i realised what was happening and uninstalled the facebook software and said no to all the prompts. Explorer would only open up to the site for buying their software.

ZoneAlarm kept popping up asking me if i wanted to run lots of random programs, which of course i said "no" to.

But i believed my PC was still under some kind of virus/malware threat.

I downloaded and ran Malware program "MalwareBytes Anit-Malware", as advised, and it found quite a number of suspicious files. I removed them all, then did a full tracks eraser (cleaning internet history, temp files etc)

The PC seemed to work okay after this, for a few hours anyway !.

I woke up this morning and had a message on the screen to the effect of "Windows files have been replaced by unknown versions, please insert Windows XP disc". But i only have an Advent recovery disk (i didn't get an original xp disc with the PC!!!). So i clicked the message off.

PC seems to work okay after i ignored that message but every so often when i click on a link in google i... Read more

A:Malware ?? - Windows files have changed, insert Win XP Disk

Well just got in and started the PC up. Apart from the "mouse properties" box opening up 5 times after i closed it, everything seemed okay.

Then after about half an hour most links i clicked on in google (using Explorer 7) seemed to take me to weird links !!!!. So i started using Mozilla Firefox, and clicking on those very same links worked fine in Firefox !.

Then after a few minutes Firefox started bringing up strange links, so i used Opera and it worked fine. Then Opera started bringing up strange links when clicked on in google search results !!!!!!

So now when i do a search in google (in any browser) most of the links it takes me to are strange unexpected links, as if all browsers have been hijacked.

HOWEVER !! - if i copy the link from google and paste it into any of the address bars in any browser it then works fine !!. It seems as if only the links in a search page are taking me to unexpected websites, it doesn't do this if i copy (or type) in the shortcut to the website i want to be at !

I've done a malware and windows defender test, no problems found !

I think something is stopping (or rerouting) my pages when i click on links in search pages.

What can i do now ?

Best Regards,
Andy
