Corrupt file in 'downloads' error at startup

Q: Corrupt file in 'downloads' error at startup

I get an error at startup saying theres an inconsistency in one of my files on the C drive. And I remember a box came up at the taskbar saying something about the download file. I deleted everything in the file when it said that. I was download from when it happened. It's a new compaq laptop and there's no restore point created. Help? D:

A: Corrupt file in 'downloads' error at startup

Can you take a snapshot of the error using ALT-PrtSc on the keyboard and paste it into Microsofts' Paint utility, save it as a JPEG and attach here?

You can also run a filesystem check. Open up my computer, right click the C drive, go to the disk tools are and choose to do a check. There might be a couple of checkboxes, if so, check them and say ok.

At this point it might say, it needs to reboot to accomplish the task. Just remember that you won't be able to use the computer while this procedure is running.

I'm haveing an issue with my computer where files I try to download or even when programs try to update, tehy end with Corrupt files error.  It began showing itself when I tried to update from Win8 to 8.1.  Then, it became a problem with my Norton 360 not allowing the virus updates to take place. Some of the Windows Updates haven't occured due to this corrupt file error either.
I've been so frustrated with it that I purchased Win8.1 and tried to do a clean install on my system.  I reformatted the Hard Drive, deleted all the OEM partitions and reinstalled Win8.1.
I still get the errors and can't install and update programs for the most part.  I've been able to install Firefox but it downloaded and stated the file was corrupt but I was able to get it to install anyway.  After muliple attempts, I was able to download and install Norton 360 but acnnot get it to update the virus definitions.
I have tried downloading programs using both the wired direct connection from my router and also going via wireless from teh router with the same results.
I've been Googling and searching now for the past week and haven't found much on the issue.  Most of what I find involves needed updates and hotfixes for other OS's like Win XP.
Could it be hardware related?  Culd my Memory be going bad?  A Hard Drive issue?
I don't know where to go with this.  It's really got me baffled.

I am getting error msgs involving the file, sfc_oc.dll (correction: sfc_os.dll), when I start windows and try to install downloaded applications. Clicking OK during startup allows me to start the computer, but I can't get applications to install. This is an older laptop that i inherited, Windows XP SP1. (I couldn't get SP2 to install because of this problem.) I did a recent cleanup of files and applications, so I don't know if that is the problem and the computer did have a history of viruses. Also, I looked in windows/system32 for the sfc_oc.dll file (because i read that on another thread) and it is not there. Help?

Let me know what details you need and I will get back to you quickly.

Thanks in advance!

Hello all, I'm pretty knowledgeable when it comes to common things on the PC but this problem has me stumped. Lately when I try to download any media file like a video, picture or music file, the file becomes garbled in some way. For instance a picture will be spliced in half in two different colors, top and bottom. A video file will play for about 2-3 minutes then stop even though it was completely downloaded and for the music, it will just sound like white noise altogether. This is causing the files on my HDD, external hard drive, and flash drive to corrupt and I'm not sure what the problem is. I have ran CHKDSK and system scans but nothing pops up everytime I do it. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Running win 7 64, when i try to download something as simple as live essentials installer, or itunes setup, the dialogue box comes up and it won't let me open from that location, just save. Trying to save it fails until I hit retry, but the downloaded file prompts the "open with" box. This is a brand new machine and install. The only thing I really did was follow the tutorial on here to move the default locations for my files. Oh, and if I transfer the file from a zip drive, it works fine. Thanks in advance. This is in IE as well.

I recently tried to do a system restore on my computer that runs Windows XP. In the middle of the process it stopped. Now when I try to boot up my computer it says

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.

Please re-install a copy of the above file"

I tried searching for answers to fix it but most of them require the Windows disk which I do not have anymore. Can you please tell me how to fix the problem or where I can find a Windows disk so I can fix the problem? Thanks!

A:Missing or Corrupt File on Startup

You can try running sfc with the scannow option. Go to Start, then to Run, and type in "SFC.EXE /SCANNOW" (without the quotes - and with a space between the SFC.EXE and the /SCANNOW). Then press Enter. This program will just exit without telling you anything, so you will need to restart your computer to see if it affected a repair. Is this a custom build that you installed the XP on? If so, do you still have the 25 character code that came with it?If this is a retail computer, (Dell, HP, Gateway...)what is the make and model of it?

I'm not entirely sure if this is the right section or not, but I don't think the computer is infected with any virus or malware, so I figured I'd give this one a try. Please move it if it isn't in the correct section. It is my father's computer, so I'm not sure what the cause could be, all he said was that the tower sounded louder than usual, and that he figured it may have been the fan. The computer was unresponsive, so he powered it down. When I attempted to start the computer, I received a black screen with the message:Windows could not start because the following file is missingor corrupt:<Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe,Please re-install a copy of the above file.I powered it down, and started it up again, this time hitting F10 to enter system recovery, and received a blue screen with this message:STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}The registry cannot load the hive (file):\SystemRoot\System32\Config\SECURITYor its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.I'm sorry if this has been discussed before, I was searching through looking for a similar situation, and only really found the Xp Boot "fixes" topic, but wanted to see if anyone could guide me through it before I burn the iso of the recovery xp recovery console and try messing around with that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, my name is Felix and I live in Copenhagen, I recently bought some spare parts from my cousin, well actually, it was an entire computer with just the PSU missing, it had burned out, so he had just bought a new computer. Well, I bought a relatively cheap PSU and installed all the parts in the cabinet. It has been working fine for almost 2 months now, but then i had to move it last Saturday.
When i moved it back and hooked up all of the cables s*** went down. At first it wouldn't even start up, so i turned off the PSU switch and started it up again, and that's where i got this error:

You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows set up using the original cd-rom

Select R at the first screen to start repair.

So my problem is that I haven't installed the cd-drive yet, and my keyboard doesn't even work when i enter the boot menu. Also, I have a suspicion that the harddrive was damaged when i moved the pc, but why would the pc have trouble starting up then. I can get to the error maybe every fifth time.

I can easily get the XP recovery Console ISO burned to a cd-r by a friend, but that doesn't even matter if both the psu and harddrive are burned out, does it?

This is my first post here on the site, i read this post: [SOLVED] Missing/corrupt file - computer won't start up
and it seemed quite helpful. But if my computer can't even start 80% of the time, and shuts off randomly whats the point in repairing the harddrive?

A:Corrupt file on startup/hardware problem maybe?

Install a CD-ROM drive so that you can test the hard drive from a bootable diagnostic CD. The CD drive should work for bootable discs even if Windows has a problem.

You can test the drive with Seagate SeaTools for DOS, an ISO file which you burn to a CD with IMGBurn. The CD is then bootable and starts the diagnostic utility.

SeaTools for DOS is here (click "Downloads"): SeaTools | Seagate

IMGBurn is here: Download ImgBurn -

Otherwise, if you can't install a CD-ROM drive, remove the hard drive, install it on a working system and test it in there with SeaTools for Windows instead of the DOS version.

Unexpectedly at StartUp message on black screen:
Windows could not start; missing/corrupt file <Windows Root>\System32\hal.dll.

At my level of inexperience I don't even know the meaning of the < & >.

I am on HP Pavilion a1350n Media Edition2005 with WinXP SP3. I have Win XP Pro CD which I ran. After installing numerous files it offered choice of I386 or MiniNT. Not having any knowledge of either I arbitrarily selected I386. Tried fresh startup with and then again without CD; in both cases the same "missing/corrupt" message appeared.
Presume I must use Safe Mode but no idea of what to do when I get there.

Will appreciate clear details of just how to find/install the required dll file.
Secondarily I'd be interested in probable cause as means of avoiding repetition.

Thank you. Sincerely,

I'm an intern with an NGO organization where one of the desktop computers started having problems about a week ago. The computer is a Dell running Windows 7. Every morning, the first person to turn it on sees a whole bunch of updates being installed. The boot screen is irregular, it doesn't include the F2 or F12 options for changing the setup, and it never goes to the log screen. Instead, it goes to a "Startup Repair" window, runs a "scan" that can't be canceled, and then reports that Windows was unable to fix the problem and offers an option to restart. If I click to see the full diagnostic, everything checks out except the last item, which says that "critical boot file ci.dll is corrupt." If I go to "Advanced Diagnostic Tools," it doesn't allow to me do a system restore or much of anything else besides open the command prompt, and I can do only limited diagnostic tasks from there. If I restart, though, it restarts and functions perfectly normally. I installed Avast on there when I started working with it and the full virus scan finds no problems. The computer functions normally for the rest of the day; however, when I go to shut it down after 5 oclock, it says that it's installing 67 updates, every single day.

I can't figure out whether this is some bizarre virus that just makes it take a little longer to use the computer every morning, or a much more malicious virus whose effects simply haven't mani... Read more

Hi guys don't really know where to put this because I don't know what is causing it.  I was infected with cryptolocker and the 4 files can still be found in just about every folder on the computer however the infection is no longer active?  I don't get the messages anymore when I reboot/log in.
After the infection was removed everything seemed fine.  That was a couple months ago. Last night I needed a picture and I went back to get it and found out all my thumbnails are gone (they show the place holder and file name but not the picture) and the pics wont open on an entire hard drive and scattered throughout the computer.  (I localize most pics on one drive) The video files are ok though.  I have been searching the web and downloaded data repair (stellarphoenix).  Tried photo shop because I read that it would open files with bad headers.  Tried gimp.  Tried my linux box.  When I look on the network linux cannot even see the files.  Tried the following command at C: assoc .jpeg=jpegfile and get access denied error occurred while processing jpeg.
In some folders half the files are there and half are not.  I originally noticed when I clicked on the image and got this message.  "windows photo viewer can't open this picture because the file appears to be damaged, corrupted or is too large.

Hi, this is my first thread post. This morning my laptop worked fine and I was browsing around the net when my desktop decided that it was high time it froze. So I did a hard reset as I have done many times before on many different computers. Only when I rebooted, my system shut itself down immediately after the first boot up screen.

Eventually (miraculously), after around 10 hard resets, it got past that screen to the windows logo screen, and got stuck for around 10min there, and then got through to the login screen. When I log in, I get a blank screen with only my cursor showing up. I read around that you can display the desktop again by ending the explorer.exe process and restarting it in the task manager, which unfortunately didn't work for me. Rebooting again does exactly the same, and when I open up the repair screen by pressing F8, only safe mode seems to actually load anything (so I guess there's not too much wrong with my harddrive since I can access everything through safe mode).

Both startup repair and Safe Mode with Networking give me exactly the same error:

"Your PC needs to be repaired

File: \Windows\system32\winload.efi

Hey guys, I recently purchased a new motherboard/cpu/ram and did a fresh install of windows 7 to make sure I didn't have any driver problems. Shortly after installing however, I would get random BSOD followed by 2 different errors, either that "windows/system32/ntkrnlpa.exe is missing or corrupt, or that fvevol.sys critical system driver is missing or corrupt".

I've also had smaller errors, like sound randomly not working, and videos having very low FPS, which would fix itself upon restarting the computer.

I've ran a memory test using memtest86, which yielded no errors.

My specs:

Operating System
MS Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit (retail)
AMD Phenom II X4 905

MSI 870-G45
NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM) (BFG Tech)

Everything is brand new except my video card (3 years old) and hard drive (2 years old).

A:New Mobo/CPU/RAM - > BSOD followed by missing/corrupt error on startup

Hi, and welcome to the forum. I looked at your three latest dumps. All three indicate memory corruption.

Bugcheck A (2X), IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. Usual causes: Kernel mode driver, System Service, BIOS, Windows, Virus scanner, Backup tool, compatibility.

Bugcheck 8E, KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED. Usual causes: Insufficient disk space, Device driver, Video card, BIOS, Breakpoint in startup without having a debugger attached, Hardware incompatibility, Faulty system service, 3rd party remote control, Memory.

Out of date drivers can cause memory corruption and BSOD's. Update your video driver through the link provided. To remove any left over driver remnants, especially from graphics cards, use driver sweeper Guru3D - Driver Sweeper.

nvlddmkm.sys Thu May 14 16:32:27 2009 - nVidia Video drivers. Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers.

Update this driver and see if this improves your system's stability. Post back and let us know. If you get another BSOD, please upload it and we will go from there.

Are you by chance running a modified Kernel (ie a non original MS OS)?

ntkrlstaforce.exe isnt a "standard" OS file?

"from a malware blog site"
you're using a modified kernel (NTKRLSTAFORCE.EXE). That's not supported by anyone. Since all kaspersky versions provide extended protection with deep ties into the kernel, expect it won't work.
so basically, if you're using a modified kernel:
-if it works: good for you
-if it doesn't: s***s for you

When I try to run ChkDsk with nothing but My Computer open it says that it can't be run while the disk is in use and asks if I want to schedule it for the next start up. When I click on "Schedule disk check" the dialog box disappears and I am not able to schedule anything and nothing runs when I start up.

In addition, I can not perform a restore to a date prior to the problem starting.

Can anyone give me an idea of how to fix the problem without having to restore my PC to it's original state when I bought it?

I´m using FRESHDOWNLOADS and getting an erro message like "access violation..."
It all happened after downloading a big file (aprox 2Gb of Fedora DVD iso)
and the cpu freezed when building the output file.
I waited, and next time I cheked the file was _._._ in the menu screen of fresh downloads in pause mode, I cheked under properties and it stated 100% downloaded, but when i double cliked on it it appeared an error message stating something like 'can't acces files' or something and kept eternely poping up windows with that error message ...

That completely stinks
This is the second time i have to download a file after it has stated 100% download completion

Other stinky part is there ins't any support by freshdevices or useful info on their site about how to solve this

I suppose it could be due to during the output build process deletes the partial files precocely!! At least it would be nice to keep them until the job is done, and the possibility of restart/continue the building output process

Any solutions/sugestions or other info would be apreciated

Hi guys. This is the first time I have a problem like this, but when I was trying to install a game today I got a error message at an early time during the installation that a file was corrupt. Here's the message: The following error occurred on the file 'E:/' the file or directory is corrupt and unreadable. (0x570).
Again this is the first time I get this error message, I was told that I must do I disk check and repair, but I just wanted to confirm it here, I also heard that this disk check and repair can cause memory loss which I hope is not true.
Thank you for your help, I appreciate it.

based on your post, i would say that the problem comes from the game installer itself. is it from dvd? the data of the file might be corrupted

I'm getting the above error on a dialog box that is called Name Setup every time I boot my computer. It usually appears about 20 minutes after my PC has been on.

I don't if it's even part of Windows or an app I have installed. It doesn't cause any noticeable issues, but I would still like to fix it.

I recently completely reinstalled Windows 7 64 bit and until this, it's been fine.

Hey, I just upgraded my mobo and cpu and installed xp pro, 64-bit on it. I had xp pro 32-bit on my other mobo before I upgraded and reformatted.
I had just gotten a new all-in-one Kodak printer a few weeks ago and installed the software perfectly in my 32-bit system. But, now that I've upgraded and reformatted, trying to reinstall my Kodak Printer CD gives me a problem. It basically goes into installing for about 2seconds and then gives me an error. The error says MSI error 1335, the file is corrupt. I have no idea how to get around this, as I said the printer and CD is brand new and it worked fine before. I should add I have AVG Anti-Virus installed which came with my phenom CPU.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any suggestions/help is appreciated!

A:MSI Error 1335, Corrupt File

I realized that the automatic updates or whatever it is was checked in the Kodak program before I accepted installation is what was causing the error. After I unchecked it the installation went through fine. Don't exactly understand why, but oh well it's good now.

A few days ago I was online and the computer froze. I turned it off manually by holding down the power button, and when I went to reboot it, I got an error that said windows couldn't start because:

WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM is missing or corrupt

I have a Toshiba laptop & am running XP home edition. I did NOT hae an external hard drive for backup until yesterday, therefore I don't just wanna insert the recovery disk and wipe my hard drive.

SO. I'm looking for either a way to get the PC up into safe mode so I can move files onto my external, or a way to fix it without loading the recovery disk and clearing all my files, music, ect.

Thanks in advance!!

Hello Forum,

My wife's computer won't boot. I get the message, "Windows can not start because a file is missing or corrupt" System32\DRIVERS\pci.sys

It appears that the CD ROM was not operating properly for awhile prior to this problem although the computer was operating. Since the error message, the monitor has quit as well. The monitor will now not operate with or without being connected to the computer. I suppose that this may be just a coincedence.

I have searched the internet for fixes for this problem with System32\DRIVERS\pci.sys and have found numerous bits of information, advice and fixes but I still have not had any success. I tried using the XP Setup Boot Disk with no success. I was in the Recovery Console with no success. The Restore CD that came with the computer did nothing.

I am also looking for a way to tell if the CD ROM is working or not. I am wondering if there is a way to access the DOS window even though the XP is not loading and I have no access to "Start" or "run" etc.

Thanks for any help,

"windows 7 setup.exe corrupt file the file or directory is corrupt"

I'm trying to install 7 32bit OEM Home Premium with the legit bought holographic CD (not a burned image of any kind) onto a Gateway laptop with a brand new hard drive.

I was getting this error installing the OS the regular way booting to the cd and installing from it, so instead I copied the contents of the cd to a freshly quick formatted NTFS partition on the new laptop hard drive, then used bootsect and diskpart to setup the disk. It boots just fine and also gets the same error installing straight from the hard drive.
Is there some kind of update I need to slipstream into this cursed cd? How would I go about doing it? Thanks.

I like to think of myself as fairly computer literate, but this latest problem just has me stumped.

I've had this new computer for about five months now. Four of those months I spent in an apartment where I shared a broadband cable connection, and had no problem either downloading files or streaming media, like on YouTube or the like.

Now I have moved back home with my computer, and for a while, everything worked fine. I couldn't really stream media very well, videos on YouTube never fully ran, but I could download media files, .exe files, and .zip files no problem.

Only recently, every single file I try to download is corrupt. It's not the source, I've downloaded from many different sites with many different types of files - still all corrupt.

Here's the possible reasons why I thought they might be corrupting.

1. A virus or spyware is somehow messing things up. So, I install AVG and Ad-Aware, do a complete sweep of my system. There were viruses and spyware, but they're gone now. Still not working.

2. I downloaded a download manager. It took me a few tries, but it was one of the things I was capable of downloading. I thought this would help as I am running a fairly long ethernet cable bringing the internet to my computer (it's actually two cords with a joiner in the middle because I am lazy.) But this doesn't make sense, I've been able to download on this computer since I moved back home. It's just been the past few days... Read more

A:Help! All of my downloads are corrupt!

You didn't specify so I am assuming you have a dial-up connection.
What is your internet provider?

I would suspect that cable connection to your modem.
Can you move the computer temporarily to use a single patch cord to connect to the modem. The length is probably not a problem but you are doubling the number of connections by using 2 sections of cable.

Another good test would be to connect a known good computer to the same internet source and see if you get the same problem.

First off, service pack 1 for which operating system? If you're installing SP1 for XP, why don't you just download Service Pack 3 and call it a day? Skip #1 and #2.

Also: What are you using to download..? Microsoft Update or just downloading a .msi off of the internet?

Hi guys.

Lately i've been having problems with downloading files, and using the internet in general. (ADSL2) I'm using Mozilla Firefox as my browser, though I've also tried IE to see if that's any better.

The main problem is, when i download files (nearly anything: video, .zip, .exe etc) the file ends up fully or partially corrupted.

Have had my hardware checked out by an IT company - they said it's all fine. But I also had the PC re-formatted and reinstalled, yet the problem persists, which makes me think that it must be the hardware.

Have also had the modem checked and replaced, and the phone lines looked at. Also, the same connection through my iBook works perfectly, so I dont think its the ISP, phone line or modem.

I've also had trouble sending email through Yahoo, viewing some pictures on websites (seem to be corrupt) and other things.

Any ideas? The problem seems to be getting worse, or it could just be that I'm getting more annoyed as it continues to happen.
Cheers for your help

Hi. I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 many times on my HP G62 but there is this problem where all downloads I do are corrupt. I'm sure it isn't my router, as I have never updated it with my laptop, but I do reset the router when my internet goes slow (which is only about 2-3 times per month). My RAM is ok, I have ran memtest86 on it, Linux does work fine on my machine also. Windows can not contain any viruses as it has been doing it all the time. I tried installing updates/hotfixes related to this problem, but they refuse to install. I'm guessing this could be a driver/update related problem, but I don't know what to install/uninstall.

I have also looked up a solution, but they don't really work.

Couple questions and suggestions.

S:) I will assume that the games and programs you are downloading are legitimate? If so it may be a virus/malware problem. Try going to Microsoft's free online scanner. It does not use installshield wizard and should install fine and not be "corrupt".

This scanner while not the best is free and works relatively well, also it will fix any registry entries that are invalid or corrupt.

Q:) Is it just certain apps, or is anything you download being corrupted? Also are you using any type of "download acceleration" software that has a pause/resume feature or that splits the file and uses multiple connections to download parts and then reassemble the file? These types of programs can also cause corrupt files.

If you are downloading pirated software/games/movies etc. I do not condone this kind of stuff and will not be able to offer any suggestions if that is the case. If it is I can only give you a short story.

A while back a co-worker of mine was excited when he downloaded a "dvd quality divix copy of the dark knight, two weeks before it hit theatres. The expression on his face when he played it and saw a couple of smurfs eposidoes strung together was priceless. The moral of the story is that some people just like to f*** with you and will upload fake/corrupt/bogus files just because wasting your time on a 1GB+ download makes them smile.

But back to the point. Try running... Read more

I've got the exact same problem. Very close build. Just got the computer assembled a few days ago, and i'm working on getting it updated now.

It posted fine and seems to run ok, but i'm getting a lot of corrupt files. Still waiting to get SP2 setup (winxp) and that may help. There's also a bios update, but I haven't done that yet. There was nothing in the bios notes about the network card. No network drivers listed on the Abit site.

Regarding 2nd post, it is an integrated NIC card.

One other thing, I was not able to get xp 64 installed yet. That may help a lot. I have heard about a lot of odd problems with the dual core 64 bit machines running out of the box.

Will post more, but I want to see what ends up working for you, as i'm still updating bios, drivers, whatnot.

I think this is a fairly common, I've googled it extensively. I haven't found a solution though.

I rebuilt my PC last week. I put a brand new hard drive in. I installed XP (eventually after a ton of problems reading from various XP CD's). Since I installed it, the only things I've installed are SP3, IE8 and the various security fixes.

My problems started when I tried to install Avast antivirus, the download was corrupt. I've had this trying to download Firefox, AVG and VLC Media player. Anything above about 2MB seems to corrupt.

I ran Memtest on my Ram overnight, no errors. I reinstalled the LAN drivers from my install CD. I've tried a PCI ethernet LAN adapter. I've cleared temporary internet files, tried installing to 3 different directories, opened up the security to stop it blocking downloading of the file and forcing me to click the yellow bar at the top and I've installed an old version of firefox off a CD and tried downloading that way.

I've read about issues with phone lines or modems but I have a spare PC and the Netgear router works great on that one.

It's taken me weeks to fix my own PC and now this is (hopefully) the last problem I have! I can't imagine it's a virus because everything should be clean but here is a hijack this log. I think my missus installed MSN messenger but the problem existed before that.

Hello, I am recently having a serious problem with my downloading. I am able to use the internet but everytime I try and download something, even legitimate files like IE8, it shows 'FILE IS CORRUPT' during extraction or installation. It is really annoying me at the moment.

I have numerous different types of error messages depending on each download.

"Cannot start setup - the setup file may be corrupt, or you may have the wrong password. If you downloaded this file, please download a fresh copy. If the file is password protected, check the password and try again."

"File is corrupt"

These all point to a bad CRC. People say to use Wintest to check the RAM, are there any alternatives?

I was able to download Mozilla Firefox right after system recovery - but now, when I open that same exe file - it fails due to corruption.

But there are a number of things I have done before and after, I've obviously installed some windows automatic updates, I deleted my secondary partition and re-formatted it, I also performed a CHKDSK check which I'm doing again!

Two days ago I reformatted my computer with Windows XP OEM, and have been experiencing a wide variety of problems. The largest of which is that I am unable to download files that are not corrupt. Because of this, I am unable to update my graphics drivers.

I am running an ASUS nvidia nforce4, with a GeForce 8600 graphics card.

I will say now that I have not yet registered my copy of XP. I think that my COA was thrown away on accident, so I cannot register my copy. If anyone could let me know how I could obtain a new COA, that would be a huge help. I do still have the original instruction booklet that came with my operating system, and the packaging that it came in (which has the COA barcode, work order number, and part numbers on it). If I were to email Microsoft tech support with this info, would it be proof enough that I am not trying to put one over on them?

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. I have a limited knowledge of computers, and when things get outside of my comfort zone (like they are now), I quickly become overwhelmed.

I have looked around for solutions but everyone seems to have a different solution so i decided to post my own experience.

My motherboard is an ASRock Conroe 1333-D667 3GHZ dual core.
i have an nvidia 8500gt graphics card and 2gb ram

The internet browsing works just fine, but everything I download is corrupted, nothing downloaded on this machine will open or install.

My XP64 machine was plagued with this problem and I thought that perhaps "upgrading" to windows 7 might help fix things. It has not.

My network has other computers that do not share this problem. My router and associated cables are all in good working order.

The hard drive has been checked over, scanned, reformatted and has a clean OS, but the problem persists.

The ram is clean and functioning properly.

Going by the various other forum posts I suspect that the Nvidia firewall may be to blame, however as nearly as I can tell it is not installed on this machine.

The trick for installing it and then uninstalling it to remove the network access manager have not worked so far, since the driver package will not install the NAM files on windows 7.

Please help.

Hi, im new and im having a problem with downloads corrupting.

The majority of my ftp downloads are corrupt.

Ive resorted to bit comet, as directed by many sites as an alternative for downloading the files. This way they are not corrupt. (Im downloading a freeware game their suggested method is through bit comet. Not for piracy.)

Almost every thing i download is corrupt. I have hear it may be my hard drive or my internet line. My brothers computer is routed off my internet and he downloads fine. If i need files hosted only on ftp and can put them on a disc from his pc and they will work on my computer.

My only idea is that some aspect of writing the file to my harddrive is not working.

Many corruptions are in the form of CRC errors in .zip, and .rar archives.

Please help me, ill do any thing i need to to help you help me.

A:Corrupt downloads.

Although I can't help with this problem, I just want to mention that if someone can help with the FTP problem, that's fine as it's primarily used for legal purposes but we can't assist with anything illegal or any P2P applications (I know you stated it wasn't for piracy) .

I just wanted this to be clear, especially for those who will be offering assistance.

Has anyone else had a problem with the RC downloads from Microsoft's official d-load page being corrupted?

I have tried a few times, it gets all the way through the download and right at the end says it's corrupted and unuseable and such.

Or is there a better, official download other than build 7100?

Thanks for help, and apologies if this has been gone over already

If you insist on getting the official RC, you should try a Microsoft http direct link for the RC ISO instead of their own downloader, I also had problems with their Java download thingy.

I've been having some trouble with my Toshiba Satellite L500-128 laptop, running Windows 7, upgraded from Vista with a Toshiba upgrade DVD. 4GB Ram (system currently says 2.96 GB useable), Core2 Duo processor 2.10 GHz.

A couple of days ago something went wrong, I'm not sure exactly what since I was briefly away from the computer when this happened, but Windows could no longer start. So I decided to reinstall it using the Toshiba upgrade DVD. This went ok and I just reinstalled without formatting. The computer worked fine apart from the fact that nearly all downloads were corrupt (some worked, I managed to install Adobe Flash player and Spotify, but I could not download Java). After failing to resolve this issue I decided to just do a clean reinstall and format my harddrive.

This is when things got tricky. After formatting my system drive I tried to reinstall once again with the Toshiba Upgrade DVD. I tried many times to reinstall failing over and over again, for various reasons. To begin with the installer would start 'Expanding Windows Files' and just fail on various different %s. After a few more tries it managed to get past that stage, but then would fail at other stages. When I was trying a 64-bit install it failed says the kernel is corrupt or missing. When I tried a 32-bit install start up failed just giving me what I think is the standard start up fail screen and asking if I wanted to start in Safe Mode.

Finally I a 32-bit install was successful. But ... Read more

The biggest piece of info that I can see is the word "upgrade". An upgrade disc will not contain a complete Operating System and only enhances or upgrades an existing OS. Install Vista from the OEM restore disc or the restore partition on your Hdd then install the Win7 upgrade.

I'm using WinXP Home and I've got a really annoying problem- basically everything I download that is over ~15Mb becomes corrupted. I'm on ADSL, have tried using a different router, have swapped out the motherboard (another Asus) and have run AVG. I'm guessing either my computers infected with a virus, the integrated LAN corrupts things, or I'm just getting ****** service from my ISP.
What is the main culprit for consistent corrupt downloads?

Since it runs ok in safe mode it is either your RAM or a driver.

These crashes were caused by memory corruption (probably a driver). Please run these two tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.

If you are overclocking anything reset to default before running these tests.
In other words STOP!!!

*Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

*Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

Any errors are indicative of a memory problem.

If a known good stick fails in a motherboard slot it is probably the slot.

Security update 2305420 from Microsoft carries a message with it that is might show this error message, and am now in a world of hurt because of it! I can't back up my computer because of the corrupted files it has caused. There are 43 of them. To do the "workaround" to fix it is so complicated I just don't know if I am willing to take on the monumental "task" right now. Is there an easier way?

I didn't know this update was on my computer. When I checked Update History, I can't find it in the installed updates. The 2010 Security Bulletin from Microsoft warning about the error message that
"you might get after installing this update" shows it was an old one for sure. I wasn't in the habit of installing updates myself. I always let Automatic Update do it for me. Anyway, I didn't even own this computer then. I bought it two years ago from Staples brand new--with the update already on it? I just don't know what's going on here.

Now, I want to back up my computer and it will not no matter how I try to do it. I tried to go to the File History in Task Scheduler and delete them, but they won't delete. I don't recognize any of them. I have made a copy of my registry, though, so I do have it backed up before I start doing anything. Can I fix it or should I really go to the computer shop for this?

Hey guys, my brothers PC has been having a pretty bad problem lately. he's using Windows Vista.

So here is the problem as follows, he boots up his PC to get the Error Windows/System32/Config after he try's to boot up in any mode Safe Mode, Last Good Configuration That Worked..... And then he restarts his PC to get the same message over and over again.

So i thought we'll have to format it, so i put in a Windows 7 disk and it just wont read the disk at all, i tried it on mine and it read it fine so he's basically stuck in a loop of this error now, iv tried changing the option in SETUP to boot from disk but it's still the same.

It's a long shot but does anyone know a fix or anything for this?

What I do when I have problems like that when repairing computers . I have a external hard drive enclose that accepts Sata and eSata hard drives. I would take the hard drive out and run thru my laptop . That way you can save important files , run checks, and format and reinstall if necessary . I by no means have near as much knowledge as these guys here have . This always works for me . I know it's not a direct fix to your problem but it will work .

Sounds like a corrupted file system. You can use a Windows 7 disc to get to the Recovery Console and run chkdsk.

You can download a X86 (32bit) or X64 (64 bit) from here: Download Windows 7 ISO (Official 32-bit and 64-bit Direct Download Links)

Burn it to a DVD using ImgBurn at 4X speed (or the slowest you can get). Boot the DVD, take the Repair Path: How to Boot to the System Recovery Options in Windows 7

From the Command Prompt, enter chkdsk /f and press Enter. Let that complete, remove the DVD and reboot, see if that fixed the problem.

I am upgrading from Windows XP Home to Windows XP Pro, I have my Pro CD, start the installation, everything goes well, it says it has to restart my machine, everything still working well, brings up the 'boot' choice screen to choose XP Pro Setup or XP Home I choose XP Pro Setup, begins the process, detecting hardware... then while the bar moves across the bottom after a few moments I get the following message:

The file mountmgr.sys is corrupted.
Press any key.

Once I press a key at the bottom of the screen it lists
Setup failed. Press any key to restart.

The only way I can now boot is to choose Windows XP Home. Any ideas/suggestions?? I've tried the following:

Playing with the boot.ini removing the XP Pro Setup choice, and trying again. Also I have tried to put in a clean copy, but Windows will replace it with it's 'corrupt' copy if I try to copy over it with a copy of mountmgr.sys from the Windows CD. Also I have tried running it 'clean' with several clean boots, always the same message.

Hi all, I've owned & been up & running with a Dell Vostro 1400 for the last 3 years running Vista Home Premium (upgrade) that installed over Vista Basic. Laptop has been ok until the last three months when every so often it fails to load the OS & displays an error message: \windows\system32\drivers\wdf01000.sys. Status 0xc00000e9. Info: Windows failed to load because critical system driver is missing or corrupt.

I press enter & have MS Vista option already highlighted where I proceed & enter to attempt to re load the OS. Shortly after the screen loops back to the above error message.

The fix is to insert my OS DVD disc into the CD drive & select the option to "repair" where upon the laptop will restart after & be all ok. That is until this happens again exactly as above.

Admittedly this is not a frequent occurrence but I've noticed it from the last 3 months intermittently & have not had any other problems with this machine. I always keep my hardware & software up-to-date (including drivers) & am not sure what the problem really is. Thanks for your help in advance.

Hi guys,

I finally took the plunge and upgraded to Win XP Pro about a month ago.

Ever since, I have had frequent problems with corruption of downloads over IRC and FXP.

The problem happens with .avi files about 50% of the time and about 75% of the time with .rar/.tar files.

The corrupt downloads transfer rate drops to zero and times out 4-11k from completion and when I resume the file and complete it, the file is corrupt.

Also, sometimes a large tar/rar containing smaller archives seems to complete okay but when I try to extract it, it only contains a fraction of the archives it should according to the filesize.

I know it's not a problem with the source files because when I download the same file different times I get different numbers of archives in the large tar/rar.

I've tried everything I could think of but am at my wits end...

TIA for any suggestions

When I bought the new hard drive & memory the problem was resolved for about 2 days then started happening again!
the latest thing I've tryed today was downloading the motherboard drivers again and re installing luck.

I have a Rock CTX Pro with Windows XP Pro, service pack 3, 2.33 GHZ dual core.

When loading my computer, after getting to the loading windows page, it brings up an error message that says:

The following file is missing or corrupt: Windows\system32\config\SYSTEM

My gf has the same problem on her computer though this message doesn't come up, it jus shuts off after the windows loading page. We checked the USB she has been using and found it has a worm and trojan:

Worm.Win32.Perlovga.a and Trojan-Dropper.Win32.Small.apl

I have read that these load something into the system32 folder though I have found nothing about it preventing a pc from actually loading windows.

I also read that to repair it, you could use the Windows XP recovery CD and follow a certain number of steps by selecting the Repair option when it loads. However, I only have an OEM version from Rock and the Repair feature does not seem to be available on it. It only shows available partitions and asks if I would like to install Windows XP.

If anyone has any thoughts then I'd be really grateful for the help. Thanks

Windows Media Live was accidentally opened...and then when i attempted to start windows i get the LoginUI.exe error file saying that C:\user is corrupt /unreadable.

Booting from the vista reinstallation and repair cd from the bios did not help. It still says unable to login/load profile.

can anyone help me? I appreciate it.

Hi I'm new to these forums and recently a family member has brought me an IBM laptop that refuses to boot up. When I press the power button the message "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM. Selecrt 'r' at the first screen to start repair."

If you could help it would be greatly appreciated.

A:Ibm Laptop Refuses To Start. Shows Error Message About A Corrupt File.

You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM. Selecrt 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

Thats what you have to do.

You have to be brave, shove in the disk, press the r for repair (not the R for recovery console) You will need you XP key and it will install XP again, replacing the files that are damaged.

Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop, in a continuous loop at boot. Safe Mode, Last Known...., etc just loops back and reboots. Safe mode begins to load then either freezes, or reboots.

Dell diagnostic tools report DST = Drive Self Test=Fail 1000-0146
google shows "failing hardrive"

Windows Xp, or Dells Xp Disk, will not load either.

Have drive installed in another desktop, drive contents are viewable. Checkdisk reported "Error" Corrupt File System"

My question is:

Is there anyway to possibly repair MBR, file system boot files manually. Are there any backups within windows directory to copy over, etc.? Windows Xp, or Dells Recovery Xp Disk will not load in original laptop.

Once again drive is accessible in another desktop via USB cable.

Or should the drive be replaced?

Thank you for your help,

Hello everyone,

I'm posting because I have an annoying problem with a T9100. For some reason, large downloads (say, 100MB or above) are always corrupt. As an example, I tried to download UBCD4Win several times from several mirrors... to no avail. The MD5 hash does not match that of the original file. This is true of all other downloads I can think of - RAR files are corrupt with a CRC error, for instance.

Anyway, I eliminated software problems as being the cause - different browsers, OS, wired/wireless connection to t'internet, etc.

Googling 'corrupt downloads' led me to several sites suggesting bad RAM could be a cause. Sure enough, running Memtest came back with something like 25 errors. However, I've tried another RAM stick, and the problem persists.

Most bizarrely, it seems I'm not alone in experiencing this problem: see this thread, particularly the final post.

Any comments, solutions or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Many thanks,

A:Downloads Corrupt - RAM / Motherboard Problem?

If you change all the memory and get the same corrupt file result, I would then test the new RAM. If it also shows to be corrupt, I would then test that same RAM in another system.

If the RAM tests good in another system, you may have a bad board.

I paid 60 dollars for the AC6210 USB Adapter by Netgear and my Steam downloads ALWAYS corrupt, I can't download ANY games.

The only reason that I have a USB Adapter is because my GPU is too big and the place where you insert your Wi-Fi card gets covered up. Also, my room is too far away from my router to use an ethernet cable.

Please help! ;-;

I downloaded the latest driver from their website, I believe.

Also, Verifying the integrity of the game cache will NOT work.

I think I would take this to Net Gears website support Forum, I don't think you are experiencing a windows 8 issue?
