Black Screen- Compaq Presario CQ61

Q: Black Screen- Compaq Presario CQ61

So my laptop's screen is black. I'm using my tv right now with it, it works fine hooked up to a TV. I've tried everything I know of. When the laptop first starts up, It flashes the red compaq screen, then goes black. Flashes the user login screen, then goes black 2 sec later. When I do the fn+f4, the screen flashes back on, everything looks cool, then 5 seconds later it goes black again. It's not just the light, it goes completely off. (Just on the laptop, external monitor works) I've tried restoring back to factory settings, recovery, and I'm not getting anywhere! I've even tried that black screen fix by Prevx. Oh and I also tried turning the laptop off, holding the power button, etc. It has windows 7. CQ61 I think is the model.
I wasn't really sure if this was the right place to post it, so sorry if I'm in the wrong section!

Hello,

When I power on my Compaq Presario, the screen remains black, the key next to the power button is orange, the Caps Lock key is blinking and a light blinks above the "home, end, num lock keys", in the upper portion of the keyboard. I have tried taking out the battery, unplugging the power and holding the power button for 60 seconds, before trying it again, and I am not getting anything...HELP!!

Try re-seating the Ram. If that doesn't help remove the Cmos battery for a few minutes then put it back, it looks like a silver coin and should be visible near the ram.

Hi all, I'm new here, registered just to get help with my problem. I have a Compaq Presario CQ61-420US Laptop, it will be a year old at the end of April 2011. It has Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OS. Never had a problem with it till now. I am planning on doing a memory upgrade (currently has 3.0 GB DDR2 PC6400 in 2 slots (1gb + 2gb), ordered a 2.0 GB chip to bring it up to 4.0 GB total memory)

Anyway I wanted to make sure I could do the swap myself so I unplugged the power cord, took out the battery, unscrewed the panel on the bottom of the laptop case, found the memory chips, took out both chips very carefully, undoing the tabs holding the chips in, took them out, inspected them, put them back in the way I took them out, making sure the tabs on the chips were lined up, maing sure the contacts were making contact. Put everything back together, ordered the new 2GB memory chip.

Today I went to power up the laptop, battery in and power cord plugged in and everything lit up like normal except the screen never came on, the power button stayed lit, the network status light stayed on, the power indicator was lit, two white lights were flashing at the same time every 5 seconds though, which is abnormal, one at the top right of the keyboard which I believe is the Num-lock light and one on the far left of the keyboard which I believe is the Caps-Lock light. And thats it, nothing ever happens it never turns on (blank screen) even after 20 min's. SO I held the power button down til... Read more

I've got it figured out, I just took the 1GB RAM stick out, since I won't be needing it once my new 2 GB stick comes in, and it booted up just fine, tested the same stick in both slots to make sure one wasn't bad and its all good now.

Recently my fan in my laptop was extremely loud, and the laptop was getting really hot. I proceeded to vacuuming my laptop and dust came out of it.

Somehow when vacuuming my fan, it broke.

Now it does not spin, and my laptop is silent.

Within 10 minutes of running the laptop it turns off; when it turns back on it says it shutdown to avoid over heating...

Any ideas, do i need a replacement, and should i take it to a computer place???

A:Broken fan on Compaq Presario CQ61

I suggest trying to blow out more dust. Maybe a dust bunny is preventing the fan from spinning.

If that doesn't work, the machine may need to be cleaned more thoroughly (disassembled). If that doesn't work, you'd need a replacement fan.

Take it to a shop, if you can't do it yourself, and you know a place that you can trust. (Preferably not Geek Squad at Best Buy. I've read few kind words about them.)

So recently the charger for my Compaq laptop has gone bust, and I need to know what charger I would need to buy. This has happened once before, and when I bought a new charger, the wattage wasn't correct for the computer, so that one broke too.

What I need to know, is the exact charger needed for this laptop, meaning the correct wattage for the computer. Links to websites where I can buy it would be greatly appreciated.

Several of these were blamed on ataport.sys. Some very old drivers need updating including your raid, storage, and others.

I would update the old drivers

Hi,

I recently turned on my laptop and the screen was black. After a while when it booted up, the screen came on as normal and then flashed out about 10 seconds later. I can shine a torch on to the screen when it boots up and see windows and everything but it's obviously too dark to use. I replaced inverter and lcd panel but the problem remains...

How should I go about fixing this?

Not by uising the recovery manager accessed through the Windows interface, via the F11 options or through the startup screen.Windows 7 home premium came presistalled. Is there a means of obtaining the installation discs? The hard drive was replaced by the previous owner. Thank you for any help.

A:Compaq presario CQ61-415SA Recovery

HP no longer has any Windows 7 based recovery disks for consumer laptops. There is a 3rd party market for recovery disks.  http://computersurgeons.com/p-19931-windows-7-premium-64b-recovery-kit-599363-001-for-compaq-presari... That is not precisely your model but is AMD so the motherboard is the same as yours and would work. If you are a little more adventurous and tight-fisted, we can walk you through a "clean" recovery using an OEM Windows 7 install disk and the drivers found on this site.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Hello All,

I have recently purchased a Presario CQ61-410 US ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834107043) and am now trying to install Xp Pro on it. I am having major difficulties.

After a lot of googling, I found these guides ( http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Operating-systems-and-software/General-XP-Downgrade-Guide-for-HP-Laptops/td-p/83267, http://maxeasyguide.blogspot.com/2008/04/preparations-for-winxp-installation-cd.html). I tried both solutions to no avail; I would still get a blue screen after during the initial install. Then I realized I have the AMD chipset, and thanks to this thread (http://www.techsupportforum.com/f19/...en-422183.html) was able to find the Raid drivers, slipstream them with Nlite and begin. The SATA hard drive was readable, and the installation commenced.

Here, though, is the rub. I am able to get through the basic install screen (F8 I agree, partitions, etc) and through the first "GUI" install screen (Agree to EULA, "Your Screen May Flicker for a few Seconds" etc). However, after that install and when the computer restarts and goes to load XP, I get the XP splashscreen for maybe 1-2 seconds, then the system reboots. I have no idea why. I know the install I am using is solid (it is running tried and true on another machine), and I have tried making a second boot disk, but every time I encounter the same problem: splash screen for a second, then restart.

I am not concerned about the other dr... Read more

So you are trying to downgrade a machine that shipped with Windows 7 to Windows XP ? If so, that would have been a better title to the thread, as downgrades are their own special set of problems.

It also would have been a good idea to note that this is a laptop.

Given that, I am having difficulty understanding why you would need "RAID drivers" for a laptop. Does this laptop have two hard drives ?

The compaq support site does not list any XP-specfic drivers for the hard drive or hard drive controller.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...1166&sw_lang=&

Have you seen this area ?

Also I'm a bit skeptical of your Driver Genius Pro software, and am wondering if that has been involved in the situation yet, and if it's a possible cause for problems.

Is this HD parititioned, with the Ubuntu O/S on one partition ? If so, it would be better to get XP installed on a single-partition drive, then make another partition for Ubuntu.

nLite is sometimes buggy, and while it is solving one problem, it could be causing another.

A bad/buggy optical drive can also corrupt system files which can cause an install to go bad.

HD's can come from the factory with errors & bad sectors. I would run HDD Regenerator (from Hiren's) to make certain the HD is good.

Hi,

My name is Alison, I was trying to fix my laptop and ended up making things a lot worse!!

I ran DBAN and during the process i realized i have no way to reinstall Vista OS so i aborted the wipe after 10 or 15 mins into it.

Its a Compaq Presario CQ61. On the back of the L/T i have a sticker with a product key but when i purchased it i never got a CD for Vista. I dont have recovery discs either.

So like i said i stopped DBAN from completing the wipe however now when i turn the L/T on it says,

"NO BOOTABLE DEVICE -- INSERT BOOT DISK AND PRESS ANY KEY"

I tried doing System Recovery but the same message comes up... i also found a Vista Recovery online and burnt to cd-r but it stills says, "NO BOOTABLE DEVICE -- INSERT BOOT DISK AND PRESS ANY KEY"

Im not sure what to do to fix this issue... any help or advice welcome but please explain in details.

Is there a way to copy a different version of windows OS from a different PC and make that a 'boot disc' I dont really understand what a boot disc is...

Thanks in advance!

Alison

A:Wiped the hard drive now i have no OS (Compaq Presario CQ61)

Hi, Alison.

A boot disk is the hard drive which your PC boots from and starts Windows, but your hard drive has had the boot files and Windows (or some of it) wiped off it with DBAN. DBAN is used to securely wipe all data from a hard drive prior to selling it or otherwise disposing of it -- this prevents any data from getting into the wrong hands.

You will have to contact HP/Compaq and ask them if they can send you a set of Recovery CDs for your model.

I ran DBAN

DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) is a low level format utility. Once you start this, it begins to wipe the drive of your OS. Stopping it in the middle is too late. If you had just run System Recovery would have set your system back to Factory Defaults, but DBAN deleted that too. You cannot copy an installed OS and put it on a different computer. An OS has to be installed from a boot disc (a disc that boots the computer if the OS can't)
What is the Vista recovery disc that you have? Boot into Setup (Bios) and change the Boot order to be CD/DVD rom drive First Boot Device, Save and Exit. Restart the computer with the disc in and you should see the message Press Any Key to Boot From CD/DVD.If it is a Vista install DVD then you can reinstall your OS. If not a Windows disc, you can try contacting your computer manufacturer and see if you can get a Recovery DVD for your computer manufacturer Or get a Vista DVD from Ebay or Craigslist.

I was working on a customer's laptop, a Compaq CQ60, that refused to boot into windows and System Recovery disabled all recovery options except for Command Prompt.

On a hunch, after pressing Escape during BIOS boot, I selected HDD Test. The test ran and failed with "Replace Hard Drive." OK.. the laptop sat there for a few minutes and never did anything else, so I tried to get out of that screen. Nothing responded, so I just held the Power button to turn the computer off.

When I pressed Power again to turn the computer back on, the Power and Wireless LEDs comes on, the CD drive is accessed and then the HDD LED lights up for a second and goes out. The screen never comes up nor do the backlights.

I have tried hooking up an external monitor, but that never shows anything either.

I have tried taking the memory out, cleaning the contacts, putting them back in, swapping the modules around, booting with one or the other.... No effect.

I pulled the battery and the CMOS battery, unplugged AC and let it sit for a good half hour. I held the Power button for thirty seconds. Plugged the CMOS battery back in then the AC. Turned it on and still no go.

I cannot figure out WHAT could have happened!? Any other ideas? Thanks...

A:Compaq Presario SR1810NX Not Getting Past Compaq Logo Screen

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)

If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.

However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.

Before the problem started was anything added to or installed on the system?

Try booting to Last Known Good or Safe Mode.

Restart the computer during the boot process repeatedly tap "F8" you should get

the Advanced Options.

Let us know if able to get the system to boot with either option.

Hi  everybody!I've got a Presario CQ61 and it doesn't turn on anymore. The battery has been always low... so I used it always connected to the Power Supply... Anyway it doesn't turn on now... I've tried without battery, to swap the RAM memory, to use just a single bank of RAM and then the other one. I've tried to disconnect the wifi module... I've checked the HD and backuped it (it works)...  One thing is... when I connect the plug of the power supply.. the led turns on for just for 1 second and then it turns off... I'm sure the battery doesn't work... I've read the forum and it seems a motherboard fault... but my question is... can it be possible it's a matter of battery... I mean does the notebook needs a working and charged battery (or at least with a % of charge) also connecting it with the power supply  to turn on???  so Could it be a problem of the 0% charged battery? Thanks in advance!RegardsAlex

I have a Compaq Presario C300. Somehow the screen cracked and of course was not under warranty. I purchased a replacement screen online and followed the directions to replace. It was relatively simple, however, now when I boot up the computer, the backlight comes on for the whole screen, but shows up blank. Did I just not fully connect something? Is there something simple I can check before I bring the whole darn thing in for service anyway? This is what I was trying to avoid in the first place. The whole laptop was only 800 and the new replacement screen was $199 (as opposed to the quote for $450 I got to have it replaced).

Anyone have any ideas I can try?

A:Replacing Compaq Presario C300 LCD Screen: blank screen now

You have to make sure you bought right screen for your laptop. Check your connection cable hasn't any damage on it. If it still shows only blank screen, i think not coming enough power for screen (wrong screen).

I bought a Compaq Presario laptop a while ago (at least 2 years) and since then have traded it for something else to a friend of my now ex-wife. The screen quit working for the person so I bought it back for the charger which I needed anyways.

When I shine a light on the screen I can see everything and the computer works fine. What I want to know is if there are any settings on the computer that could be causing it to do this or if the screen is simply shot. Any help would be appreciated; I tried adjusting the brightness from the [Fn] + F7 and [Fn] + F8 keys but that didn't work.

A:Compaq Presario - Laptop Screen Help

Is there a brightness slider on the side of the screen on that one? Otherwise it sounds like the backlight has gone. You might be able to get that repaired.

I had been using Windows XP on same machine. But this time, I'm not able to find its VGA / Graphics Drivers for XP.

Could someone please help me on this ????

A:HP Compaq CQ61 VGA Drivers Not Found

Here is the support and software site for the Compaq Presario CQ61-231TU laptop.
You should add and save this site in your browser favorites/bookmarks list so you can readily refer to it when needed.

The drivers and downloads section has drivers for Windows Vista and Windows 7, but not for Windows XP.
Did you downgrade that laptop to Windows XP?

That laptop appears to have either an Intel or a NVIDIA graphics device, so we need to confirm which one it has.
Go into the Device Manager and then advise the names of the entries that have a yellow ? next to them.

Ok guys, this one has me hung up and I would appreciate some help. A user brought me their Compaq CQ61-420US laptop that they purchased from a pawn shop. At first the PC wouldn't even turn on. I ended up having to replace the power cord and a new battery and also had to replace the motherboard fan because it was not spinning and causing the PC to overheat. After I got the hardware part fixed I found that the PC had a lot of malware. I ran a scan and cleaned the PC up completely.

Now when I try to start the PC sometimes the PC will boot just fine and other times The PC just starts up but there is a black screen and the CAPS LOCK AND SCROLL LOCK lights flash. After I completely drain the battery and recharge it then it will fire back up normally. I've also tried different RAM but the issue still persists. I'm thinking this may be a motherboard issue but wanted to post on here and get some of your opinions.

Thanks for any input!

A:Issue with Compaq CQ61-420US

The Compaq Presario CQ61-420US (WA976UA#ABA) laptop originally came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

Because that laptop was purchased at a pawn shop and contained the programs and debris and issues from its previous owner, it needs to be wiped out and given a fresh start.

The factory restore recovery disc kit for it can be purchased here.

A:Compaq CQ61- 401SA ( Windows 10 )

Here's the specs: http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c01967531 You have the Intel 4500M GMA graphics and it is a T4400 Pentium dual processor.  Windows 10 does not have a built-in driver for your video chip. However, the internet and youtube are full of workarounds. I have installed Windows 10 on several laptops with that hardware and it will work but in most cases I have eventually gone back to Windows 7 which works better on that era of hardware.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Hiya

The screen on my Compaq Presario C700 has gone green and fractally. It looks a bit like its eaten someones' acid. Not ideal, and is a bit migraine inducing...

It comes back to life if I tilt the screen right back, which says to me its a loose connection somewhere. Its not the motherboard, as I have checked it on an external monitor and is fine...

BUT

I have disassembled and re-assembled and its still the same, and now have a query...

Behind the screen, along with the ZIF connector that connects at the top , there is a tiny white plug on a silver cable that isnt connected to anything, and I cannot see anywhere it should live. Is this for a camera maybe, or is this maybe my problem?

Please, any advise would be massively appreciated. The disassembly manual on HPs website was completely useless, it appears to be for a different model than the one I asked for...

I look forward to your reply

So my sisters laptop's LCD screen just stopped working a few years ago and I'm not very familiar with innards of laptops so I just didn't bother with it and it's been sitting in her closest ever since.

Well I finally decided to get around to seeing what was up with it and I ended up taking the entire thing apart piece by piece. Not really sure why, just kinda felt like it. Before I took it all apart though I decided to see if I could plug in a separate monitor and have it work to see if it was a video card issue or not. It worked just fine so it was definitely not a video card issue.

Windows wanted me to activate it for some reason so I tried but my CD key was apparently invalid, so I said screw it and installed Linux, and then took it all apart.

My guess right now is that the LCD screen is just plain messed, or it's a cable issue, the cables looked fine to me though. I'm just posting here because I wanted to be sure I'm not missing something. I've done soo much wandering around Google for answers but there aren't many to be found except everyone else and their mom has had the same issue with Compaq's.

If it turns out the screen is messed then more than likely the computer will be junked, not even worth spending $200 for a new one. So if anyone else knows anything I don't about the situation I'd love to hear it because I'm stumped right now.

Thanks.

EDIT: Sorry about that, will watch myself next time.

Hi,

I've got a Presario 2200 whose screen flickers black and white horizontal lines at some of the angles its positioned at. Usually if I open it up at a big angle it's fine, but as I go more acute the flickering starts. At some point the screen even goes black.

I tried opening it up to see if I could identify anything wrong with the connection but it seems fine. I even disconnected and reconnected the display cord. Still flickers.

Anyone have an idea of what I could do to fix this flickering?

One more thing, which is more my second priority... the wireless networking in the laptop doesn't work. The blue wireless button won't even turn on. What should I check? The wireless antenna cables in the Mini PCI communications board seem fine..

Hi, I've got a hp/compaq laptop that has been having screen issues for awhile. It started as a couple vertical lines on the right side of the screen and has grown over the past couple of months. My friend said it was from the ribbon cable that connects to the motherboard being pinched or faulty. If I applied pressure in certain ways to the screen i could make the lines go away. So anyway, flash forward to today and I open up my laptop and my screen is a mess of liquid colors. There is a spidering of cracks originating from the bottom of the screen and when I pushed on them the screen proceed to crack all the way across it. There are multiple fractures in there now and teh screen is obviously screwed. My laptop is still under warranty however. I called up tech support and they said they would send a box and I would ship it to hp and it would take 7-10 days and if it was determined that the problem was caused due to an accident they would call me.

My question is this: the screen is definitely cracked, I don't know what happened but I did not physically drop it as far as I know. I don't know what criteria they use to determine this, but I don't want to send my laptop in only to find out a week later that they are saying I broke it and it is not covered under warranty and then charge me an arm and a leg for the service and new screen. My laptop is crucial for my work and I need it serviced as fast as possible, especially considering my desktop just crapped o... Read more

Hello, my name is Alexander. I am new here.

I just decided to turn on my laptop to play Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004: A Century of Flight. First I pressed the power button to turn on the laptop and it blinked, the battery light also blinked. As I remember the battery was charged, so I decided to turn it on again. After pressing the button, the COMPAQ boot screen appeared but suddenly all the screen gone gray for some unknown reason. I pressed and held the power button for 10 seconds but nothing happened. Then I removed the battery but the laptop didn't turned off. Now, I leaved the laptop for 3 hours and it didn't shut down.

Last night it worked fine. I was playing Microsoft Flight Simulator 98 and listening to some Guns 'n' Roses songs.

Specs (Sorry, I forgot the laptop model):
RAM: 2GB.
Graphics card: Mobile Intel 4 Series Chipset.
Processor: 2GHz.

OS: Windows Vista Home Basic.

Hi All,

Hope you can help me.

I have a Compaq Presario C300 Laptop which i am working on.

The screen is faint so at 1st i thought it would be the backlight or the inverter. I changed the inverter to a new working one and no change was seen. I then changed the screen to a working one and that still didn't fix the problem.

I have hooked up the computer to an external monitor and it works fine.

I now am unsure what the problem can be other than the cable.

Can anyone else give me an idea as to what the problem is?

A:Compaq Presario 1250 notebook screen problems

Sounds like the flexible connector between the screen and motherboard has given up, probably with use?

It would need disassembly and replacement of the flexible mylar circuit. Could possibly just be a connection issue at one end or the other, which still requires disassembly.

Hi there,

I recently installed a Registry Cleaner and installer Eusing Free Registry cleaner and ran a registry scan and deleted the files it determined needed to be deleted. Just before deleting these files i used Compaq Recovery CD/DVD Creator to use cd's to back up my info. I aborted the operation which was about to finish backing up my first CD out of 7 i needed. I got the message that it would resume the next time i ran Compaq Recovery CD/DVD Creator.

After that i downloaded and installed Mozy which is a program that backs up your pc's data and sends it to a remote server. After ending that after a few minutes, i decided to restart my computer. So before the normal boot up screen appeared i got a screen saying:

Press ' R' for recovery options

Press 'I' dont know the key' to format your harddrive it will erase all installed software! a option along the lines of that.

Press 'Q' to exit this menu and boot up normally.

Note it in the Mozy Options it's selected as Automatic perform backup while computer is not in use.

I just want to know if there is anything is wrong with my computer for this screen of options to come up, everything is working fine on my computer.

Trying to fix a friend's computer, and seem to have run into a rather strange snag.  Problem:  The computer will not boot past the bios screen. Details:  When you power on the computer, the compaq logo with intel inside shows up and has the <F1 Setup> and <F10 System Recovery> options listed as well.  And this is about as far as the computer gets.  After this the whole computer is just locked up, no buttons work on the keyboard no lights come on the keyboard ect ect.  I've tried mashing on the F1 key as soon as I power on the computer and I can manage to get it to say *entering setup* but it still freezes after this point.  I've already tried eliminating possible sources of problem, all expansion cards removed, HDD and Dvd Rom disconnected, single memory module (256mb ddr 2700), only power, vga, and keyboard connected.  Ive also used the jumper on the motherboard to clear the cmos hoping that would solve the problem, to no avail.  I've tried using a different stick of memory and different memory slot as well...  Tried using both a ps2 and a usb keyboard... Ive even tried pulling out the jumper for the bios password protection (even though it didn't have a password on it, just trying anything I can think of).  The installed bios version is 3.1, and that is about all I know about the computer at this point, other than what the website tells me of it.   http://h10025.www1.hp.com/... Try clearing the CMOS again but this time remove the CMOS battery and hold the power button in for a few seconds. Then replace the battery and try booting up again.  On the back of the pc is the PSU condition led green or flashing?

Hi, I read through the posting and did not see a definitive answer for why my laptop boots to six screens. I am a missionary teacher in Roatan, Honduras and I took it to a tech shop who said it was the inverter but he did not test it and the color/brightness looks fine. I don't want to spend money on an inverter unless it is the problem.

Is there a solution? I tried safe mode on Vista but could not get to the screens indicated. Please help if you know a solution!

Thanks

NOTE: THIS IS A COPY OF MY POST ON THE COMPAQ FORUM...getting desperate.

Hi, i bought a 6150b from a company auction. Everything worked perfect for the longest time. Then last week i went to go turn it on, and all it does is run the CPU fan for a couple seconds, flash the AC LED about 7 - 8 times, and while thats flashing the power and hard drive LED’s stay solidly lit. Then it completely turns off. This all lasts about 3 seconds at the most. That’s what happens when on battery power.

When on AC power, the same thing happens, except it continues doing the cycle over and over again until I unplug it.

I think it might have something to do with the LCD monitor, since it does not even show a slight flicker at all. No color change like it would from when turned off to a black back lit screen when turning on….simply nothing.

I opened her up (no warranty anyways) and checked all the connections for the keyboard, monitor, DVD drive etc....also reseated them as well, with no luck.

Pulled the both RAM modules and reseated them as well, nothing.

Pulled the battery as well, no change. Still cycles the same over and over again while on AC

There are no audible errors codes (real nice HP...), and im lost at this point.

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.

A:Compaq Presario 6150b wont boot - no BIOS screen - powers on and off repeatedly

I think instead of just pulling and replacing the CMOS battery you might purchase a new one and install it. Proceed from there. If you get a screen and it's still has a problem try a new PSU. Jazz

I have a Compaq Presario CQ56-101SG which does not start anymore.I updated the BIOS from Version F.00 to F.18 which forces the device to reboot which went well. But after a shutdown the notebook does not start, it hangs with a blank screen, power LED and WiFi LED lit up and Caps Lock LED is blinking about 1x/sec. What I tried to recover:* Remove battery and AC adapter, press power button for about a minute and try to power up again with AC connect. --> Same bad state as before.* Press power button for 5 sec while no power connected (battery removed), reconnect AC, press [Win]+[B] while power button starts the system. --> Same bad state as before.* The same as before but this time with a 2GB USB thumb drive (FAT16 formatted, "HP_TOOLS" named, put "01604F06.BIN" - an older BIOS version binary - into root directory) connected to USB port. --> Same bad state as before. - Did I anything wrong when trying to recover the BIOS?- May the name of the BIOS file needs to be something else?- Is there anything else I can try to get the device up and running again? Kind regardsChristian

My sister in law has a Compaq Presario CQ50-139WM running Vista Basic (at least that's what's on the tag on her laptop). Since she was getting a boot error, she asked me to look at it.

I don't remember the exact error she was getting - some file was corrupt - I think it started with a C, but that's all I remember. I tried the last good configuration, directory services restore, safe mode.... they all brought up that same black error screen with the white lettering.

Then I hit F2 (I believe) on startup and accessed a menu that would let me temporarily change the boot order as well as perform system diagnostics. The diagnostic selection successfully tested the memory then went into a test of the hard drive. It failed almost immediately and the screen froze. I couldn't even turn off the laptop by holding down the power button. I gave up after 30 seconds, disconnected the power cord, removed the battery and once again held down the power button. This time it turned off. After reconnecting the battery and ac adapter I turned it back on and got nothing beyond the lighting of the power button and the wireless indicator. Nothing ever displayed - just a dead. black screen. Not even a mouse pointer. I heard no beeps or Windows jingle. I have 3 small light indicators on the bottom, just to the left of the touch pad. The first light has a power symbol, and it's lit. The second has what appears to be a lightning bolt, and it's dark. The third has the symbol for the HDD an... Read more

Hello, I have a problem with my laptop hp compaq 615. It was working fine and suddenly when i wanted to turn it on i get a black screen. It starts fine i hear a cooler, then stops and nothing on display shows. I was looking accross the web for my solution and didn't find any so am posting here. There are only 2 lights one for power button and one for wireless/bluetooth button. W/B button is blinking all the time orange to blue. Capslock button isn't blinking which I found out that it shows light codes if something went wrong with memory, proc, hard etc. I removed a memory to check if maybe the light isn't working on capslock. After i started the laptop without memory i get same black screen, capslock is blinking 3 times in a row that indicates that something is wrong with the memory, but W/B button isn't blinking in that situtation. I put the memory back and i get same result, blinking W/B button and black screen. If I may add the feeling that i get when starting up the laptop is it stops starting up when W/B button starts to blink. So I think if W/B button is blinking, maybe wireless card has gone wrong and needs changing??? But its silly that laptop won't start because of that..... Detailed info on laptop: Compaq 615,                                             Serial: CNU0122S7Z                    &nb... Read more

A:Black screen on Hp compaq 615

Hi Bino_84,

Welcome to the HP Forums! You hear the fans turn on and stop and nothing shows up on the display. So does it say blank the entire or something comes up and then goes black? It is going to be hard to diagnose this problem without getting it to turn on at all. How long have you had the notebook for?

Try doing a power reset. Remove both battery and the power cord. With them disconnected, hold down the power button for 30 seconds, this will disperse any remaining or flea energy. Then try the battery first and if that doesn't work do both battery and power cord.

In case it becomes relevant what is your operating system?

HelloThe issue that you describe could be RAM, however you must count how many time caps lock blinks. If the cause it's the RAM, you should remove it and clean RAM contact's with white rubber and assemble it again.NOTE: Before remove the RAM remove battery and AC Adapter. Count the number of caps lock blinks and replay my Post. Regards

My Compaq laptop's screen has gone black and at first I thought the back lighting had gone out and I put it in the closet until I could get it repaired. Tonight I got it out and turned it on and it came on for just a minute or two, you could see the desktop and the icons, but the fan was really loud. The fan got quiet (but was still working) and then the screen went black again. This makes me think that it is not the back light that is the problem but maybe something to do with the fan. I went ahead and shut it back off, but I am currently charging it because the battery was completely drained. I am hoping this is a problem that is inexpensive and possibly easy enough for me to fix (with your help of course).

A:My Compaq's screen has gone black

Hi and welcome to TSG.

Before a backlight / inverter totally fails it can run intermittently, so I wouldn't totally discount that option. Infact, based on your description I would consider this the most likely cause of the problem, it is also a common failing component.

When the laptop is on and the screen is blank get a bright torch and shine it at the screen, look closely at it and see if you can still see a feint image of the desktop and other expected information. If you can then the backlight / inverter need replacing.

Personally, I wouldn't expect the screen to go blank due to a fan problem, if it was overheating (likely if the fan was failing) it would likely alarm and shutdown automatically. I assume that the machine appears to be running still when the screen blanks out?

I have a Compaq Pressario CQ62 laptop computer. About a month ago, it went black screen. There was no picture or cursor on screen, and no response from the hard drive (the usual beeps and clicks were not present or audible), although the fan was running. I got advice to turn it off, remove the battery, and hold the power button a minute or two. After reinstalling the battery, it was up and running.
A day ago it stopped working again, with the same problem:black screen, no cursor, fan runs, and the hard drive does not engage. Tried the procedure with the battery numerous times, with no result.
Would greatly appreciate any ideas or suggestions.
I believe it has Windows 8.
Thank you.

Got a problem with a compaq presario CQ56, in that whenever I log on to my main profile, it will start normally, and the desktop and icons will appear for a second, after which all the icons disappear and a few seconds later, so does the background, leaving me with a blank white screen. All the programs seem to work fine though, just "underneath" the white screen, as when I ctrl+alt+del, it returns to how it should be untilI perform an action

So far I've tried restarts, full shutdowns, emergency shutdowns(battery removal), switching users back and forth just about everything from taking it apart, which I don't think needs to be done

Any and all help would be appreciated

If you can, try hooking the laptop to a computer monitor (should have a video input jack on the side somewhere) and booting the computer, then hitting FN until you get a picture on the monitor.

Hi. I have been browsing this forum for a long time. I usually find my answers from other member questions but today is different ): I have a netbook that belongs to someone I know and he does a lot of homework and facebooking on it. The information I listed is all I could get out of him. He does not have a virus scanner (sad face) and probably has like 20 spyware installed from allowing his other friends use it.

The screen loads up the Compaq and below it says press F9 or F10 for Bio setup. I can provide a video of this tomorrow when I get the camcorder. It goes on to the next screen which is a blank black screen. It will stays there forever (I had only checked for 20 minutes)

The Netbook doesn't have a CD drive so I couldn't try the other methods that I have read on here :x It only has a few USB ports.

Is there a way to restore the computer to an earlier time from using the F9/F10 menu? I would appreciate it if you guys can help. If the Netbook can be fixed, I will install the security for him (: Oh and thank you everyone in this community for helping me over the years lol. I know it is long overdue :x

A:Black screen after Compaq logo screen

Hi Amilius,

I recommend booting the computer into Safe Mode and see if the computer boots to Safe Mode. Turn on the computer and immediately keep on tapping the F8 until the Safe Mode Menu comes up. Then when the Safe Mode Menu comes up choose "Safe Mode w/ Networking" and hopefully the computer will boot into safe mode. Afterwards, I recommend downloading and installing "Malwarebytes" on the computer. Scan the computer for viruses/spywares using Malwarebytes, pretty good program.

I turned on my computer (Compaq Presario 5000--Windows xp) this morning to find that it could not get past the Compaq screen. Seemed to be frozen. Couldn't even get to Safe Mode. I switched it off and restarted only to get the same results. Upon searching on line for hours to find a solution, I disconnected all power supplies and pulled the battery off the motherboard. Now I get nothing but a black screen with a small blinking line in the upper left hand corner with a v01.05 in the bottom left hand corner and a Compaq (F10=Setup) in bottom right corner. Is it time for a new computer?? And if so... is there any way I can get some info off it before I toss it? I back up often but there are a few pics I would like to have. Thanks for any info you may have for me!!

I have an old hp dv6 that has black screen issue, i try everything from holding power button to reflow.
So a friend gave my his old CQ45 to use while i save money for a new PC (really need a new one) the problem is that was W8 and also has a sofware isssues, so it need to be format and also I install W7 (sucks install W7 in W8 machines but i made it).
So far no issues at all, works perfect. But suddenly while i was configuring wireless conection (typing my wifi password) screen goes blue and then blink repeatly between blue and black and finally stays black.
This scare the shit out of me, i try to reset it but the first thing i see is a blue screen where the logo should be, then black and blue again when microsoft logo should appear along whit the cursor, i can hear how windowns start, the typical sound of W7,but is all black.
The HP I have before just has blinking leds and nothing more but this manage to start windows, just dont show it on the monitor.
It was so sudden, I did something wrong, how can I solve this?

It s worth keep this 2 old laptos or is just better sell it for pieces to buy a new Pc, as far as i know all compenents are ok and this is a sofware issue (mother board issue for the DV6, but the rest is ok)

I have a nearly 2 year old Compaq CQ56 laptop that has just quit working. I had been on for awhile, put the laptop down, did some errands without turning off the laptop. When I did come back to it the screen was black (as is usual) but wiggling mouse of tapping enter did not bring the screen up. I tried to start several times then took it to my neighbor to look at. He is a cash register programer and is decent with Windows. He hooked the laptop to an old monitor and it did nothing. Next he took the battery out, waited a few minutes, put battery back and voila... working laotop! I was estatic! It worked fine the rest of the night but when I tried to boot today it had the black screen again. Googled "CQ56 has black screen, doesn't boot, flashing cap lock" and found some repair tips. Did a "hard start" removed and changed around memory sticks, still no laptop. Found a "BIOS reset" tip here and tried that. Still nothing... and I really need this thing to work.
Screen has NO activity, on/off button lights, cap lock button blinks on - off... no pattern, Lan button comes on. I can hear a whirring sound like it is booting and you can hear a soft running noise so something is coming on. I have no idea what is going on. Has anyone had this problem or know how to fix it?
Thanks,
Jan

Hi...I have a compaq 5108US, windows xp pro.. recently installed a new hard drive, which worked fine for a few months. now when I try to turn on the computer, all I get is a black screen, with the compaq logo, and an immediate blinking cursor in the upper right hand corner. Tabbing f8 etc does not bring me to the safe mode option screen. I had the same problem a few months ago, of which I ended up having a new hard drive installed and that solved the problem. I wouldnt think a new hard drive would go bad that quick (if this is the problem this time). No beeps.. I also installed a new memory board, and it reads 504 memory ok, 164 memory size error, in addition to the black screen, compaq logo and blinking cursor. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! My Compaq CQ62-209WM was working great until a couple of weks ago.  When I turned it on the screen stayed black, the caps lock light blinks once every 5 seconds, and the wifi light stays orange.  Read on this forum of others with similar problems.I tried a hard reset and it worked the first time, long enough for me to back up the important stuff on my hard drive, but did not work the second time (or any time I have tried it since then). One blink indicates CPU failure so I ordered a new CPU and thermal material, dismanteled the unit and replaced the CPU and thermal material this evening. Still have black screen and blinking lights - still one blink every 5 seconds. Tried hard reset, no change.Any suggestions? Not able to replace computer at this time - willing to try almost anything. Thanks in advance.

Hi @micwtx ,  Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your Compaq Presario CQ62-209WM Notebook and issues with the flashing lights and not starting correctly. Here is a link to computer does not start. It has the LED blinking codes and suggests that it could be your System Board. Have you tried to reseat the memory and HDD? (it is in the document) Please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues. Plug the power adapter directly into a functioning wall outlet. Do not plug it into a power strip, surge protector, or secondary power source as this could cause and issue.Hope this helps you. Thanks.
