Problem installing downloaded programs

Q: Problem installing downloaded programs

Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium

I recently got this Samsung R440 laptop and I've been having trouble installing downloaded programs, (ex. AOL IM, iTunes).
Itunes won't even appear when I run the installer. AOL will say "NSIS Error: Error Launching Installer".

I've tried numerous things: run as admin, cmd.exe (force install), and changed .exe into .msi. I'm wondering if this may be a problem with the registry, however I've even used Registry Cleaner with no luck.

Does anyone have a solution? Do you need to look at my cmd.exe (/ stat)? hijack this? anything else?

Recently I have been trying to download trial versions of video editing software. With two of them the download finishes, but when I run the installation process I am informed that some of the downloaded files are corrupt. I have sought help on the relevant help forums but am always told to keep repeating the downloads until the installation finally works. I have done this many times (with my anti-virus on and off) but without any luck. The third trial downloaded successfully (like the others) but when I click on the application in order to install it, nothing happens. There is obviously a problem on my computer but I don't know what it is.

I would check for:
1. Viruses (Microsoft Security Essentials is FREE for home and small-business use)
2. Integrity of system files
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Option TWO, point three (3.)

There is also an interesting FREE solution by Kaspersky Labs called GetSystemInfo Parser 2.96
It troubleshoots with the report:

Installation Issues
Activation Issues
Computer has become slow
Update Issue
Web Browsing Issues
Blue Screens

I recently built a computer out of some parts my friends had given me and everything seems to be running fine except for one thing, I can not install any programs or updates that have been downloaded from the internet. If I download on a different computer and put the installation file on a cd then run it on the computer it installs fine. I can also install from an external hard drive as long as the file was saved to it from a different computer.

I am running windows xp pro with a p4 1.6 processor on a msi 645 ultra-c mainboard.

The error messages I get vary depending on the program or update I am trying to install, but here are most of them.

Could not initiatlize installation. Could not extract Wise0132.dll to ' c:\DOCUME~1\illumin8\LOCALS~1\TEMP\GLC27.tmp', CRC does not match.

NSIS Error. Installer corrupted or incomplete. This could be the result of a failed download or corruption from a virus. If desperate, try the /NCRC command line switch (NOT recommended)

An I/O error occurred while installing a file. This is normally caused by bad installation media or a corrupt installation file.

or the

"(file name.exe) has encounterd a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." error

I never get all of those at once, just one of the above errors depending on the installation file.

I have Windows 7 32 bit OS. The PC runs well and I have checked the memory and keep the machine clean from viruses and garbage using Advanced System Care and Avast. Here is what happens. I download a software program and when the download completes, I click on run and the little blue circle starts as if it is beginning the install.
This hangs up forever unless I hit ctrl-alt-delete and then the window comes up to allow the program to continue. Closing out the ctrl-alt-delete window, the program continues and installs as it should. I have never had to go through these steps before and am stumped as to what is causing this and why? Any help or suggestions are most appreciated.

A:A puzzling glitch with installing downloaded programs

I'm not saying this is the solution, but I always download software and save it before I install it.

This serves two purposes:

1. You can scan the software for viruses before you install it.

2. You have a copy that you can re-install should you ever re-install Windows.

You say you are using Advanced System Care and Avast. Are they both anti-virus programs? If so, you need to ditch one of them because running two A/V programs at the same time can cause problems.

I downloaded Version 3.01.1 of Firefox from Mozilla in order to replace Version 3.5, which was malfunctioning with graphics problems. However, I could not istall it as I was given the message that the downloaded file was from an Unknown Publisher and that there was no digital signature or that the signature was invalid. It asked me if I wanted to install anyway so I said yes. However it would not execute and said it would notify MSft of the problem.

I've tried downloading other files, Avast for example, and got the same message(s). I went to tools/internet options/Advanced/Security and checked "Allow software to run or install even if the signature is invalid" and unchecked "Check for sinatures on downloaded programs". This didn't work either.

I would appreciate any help on this.

I was looking through my "downloaded programs file" window others include java plugins shockwave plug ins ect..and I noticed that I have TWO duplicate files (well almost one has a total of 212kb and the other 216kb). Both were created about the same time on the same exact day. I am not super literate with computer programming but I do understand that these files relate to windows update do I need to delete one of these. I have to say that the computer "appears" to be downloading the updates properly when I perform them..

Any clue?

I have tried to find an answer on how to fix this before but with no luck. Every time I try to install something on my computer, I get some version of this message "Error 1317. An error occurred while attempting to create the directory: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer". This particular message showed up when trying to install .netFramework in order to run the newest version of Magic Online (Online card gaming system if you don't know). The problem I have with the Magic Online program is the game won't start after install and I get an error message saying "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). Click OK to terminate the application." After reviewing the troubleshooting section the game site has, I found out I need .netFramework for the program to run. This is where I first found the instillation problem. After a few more weeks, other programs wouldn't install giving me the same error message as .netFramework however with different directories depending on where I was trying to install the program. I then sought help, which lead me to check if I had admin rights on my computer. I can say after A LOT of different ways to check this, I still have this problem even though I am sure I have admin rights to the file. I just upated to the latest version of Windows Internet Explorer a week ago. Since then I have downloaded two programs(HomePipe and RinseMyMusic). In both instances the download completed but when I chose RUN to start the installation, nothing happened. I've tried re-downloading the re-opening the files but nothing happens. Is there a setting in the new IE that is causing this? With the previous version of IE, any download would automatically install after hitting RUN, now nothing happens. What to do? I am having problems installing a number of programs (eg. TeamView, Adobe Reader and Adobe Creative Cloud).

I have spent 5 hours on support calls with Adobe, but they have been unable to help. They have concluded that there is a problem with the Windows installation, and have suggested that I contact Microsoft and the computer manufacturer. Somehow, I don't feel that that is the right way forward!

I am running Win7 Home Premium, and when I attempt to install the programs I am logged in as an adminstrator with full control over all the folders that I am using.

Examples of the error messages that I get are:TeamViewer - Verification of your TeamViewer version failed! TeamViewer will quit for security reasons. Please reinstall Team Viewer.
Adobe Cloud - We've encountered the following issues: Installer was unable to access a critical file/directory. Please try installing again.
Adobe Reader - Certificate Authentication Failed

I am wondering whether the problem could be caused by a Service being disabled (I attach a list of Services), permissions or certificates, but my knowledge stops there. Any suggestions / advice would be greatly appreciated. (I would prefer to avoid a full reinstallation of Windows!)

I have already posted this in another forum, but I think it might be more suitable for here because I think it's malware.

Hi. Today I tried installing the LiveZilla live support client for my own website. Oddly, it didn't work and it showed an error message at the end of the installation. Without an error code. Quite vague.
I thought it was an error because I hadn't installed .NET Framework or something, so I downloaded the .NET Framework (3.5 SP1) setup, and tried installing that. It failed also, giving a quite vague error message at the end, not giving any information or an error code, it said just that there was an error in the installation.

I'm not a big techy guy, but I think it has to do with my Temp folder, seeing both these programs require to put some files in the temp folder. Somehow they're maybe not allowed?
Other programs that don't require to put files in the temp folder can be installed, so it had to be that.
However, I've tried about everything to give me full permissions to the temp folder (the one in C:\Windows\Temp and the one in %USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Temp), which I could, but this still did not solve any of my problems. I'm quite desperate now. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with my Temp folder now. Could anybody please assist me on this?

My temp folders actually look fine. I really think it's something else right now. For info, LiveZilla uses the InstallAware installer, .NET Framework uses W... Read more

With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have the Windows Recovery Console pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.
Go to Microsoft's website =>

I have had a certain problem when trying to install various programs recently. It has happened mainly with small applications, but so often that i think it must be a general problem rather than specific to the programs themselves. When i open the installer .exe file I get the hourglass as if it is doing something.........then nothing. No message or anything. Could this be a windows installer problem? Anyway, I tried installing them in safe mode, and some of them worked, but one gave me the error message "the system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation".

I know this is two problems and I don't know if they are related, but if someone could solve the general problem of getting the installer packages to run, I would be extremely grateful. It only seems to happen with smaller applications. I can install things such as Nero without a problem.

Ive tried alot of things including trying to download this update (Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable (v2)) but it isnt working for me at all i still get the same message which is posted down below. I know for sure that the files are not lethal in any way but im thinking it is a problem with the installer =\.

Someone told me if the installation of the new windows installer did not work then to do this.

I do not know how to do that but if you can help thanks alot :) its really annoying now because i really need to install the screen recorder and the other program that i need to use.

A:Recent problem installing programs

It sounds like maybe the account you're on doesn't have admin-level privileges.

Check the account in control panel or create a temp. admin account to try.
Can also try to temporarily disabling your antivirus before running setup (as admin).

It seems to be a permission problem.

Move the files to another folder and see if you can install, or try this:

The problem is with the security permissions on your profile temp folder. To fix it navigate to %temp% or C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local and right click on the Temp folder and choose properties, then click the security tab and click advanced.

On the permissions tab you should see the permissions that are there. There should 3 which are:

'SYSTEM' with Full control which applies to 'This folder, subfolders and files'

'Administrators' with Full control which applies to 'This folder, subfolders and files'

'Your Username' with Full control which applies to 'This folder, subfolders and files'

and all 3 should be inherited from the C:\Users\[Username]\ folder.

If you don't have the 'Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent' option ticked, then tick it and click continue if there are any problems, then remove the permissions that aren't inherited.

Once you click 'Apply' and click 'OK' you should have the permissions to write to the directory and you won't get those error messages any more.

I've successfully installed Adobe Photoshop 6 and Illustrator 9 on two desktop computers, one running Windows 7 and the other Windows 8.

However, when I try to install them (via original discs) on a fairly new HP laptop running Windows 8 (which came with the laptop), the computer doesn't even recognize them. When I click the installation button on the screen, the disc drive runs for a few seconds and stops. Nothing is installed.

I tried stopping my Webroot protection program, but that didn't make a difference. I tried installing with the installation disc first in the computer's drive and then in an external drive. Still no go.

Any thoughts as to why installation isn't occurring or how to make it work?

BTW, I expect someone will be tempted to suggest that I upgrade to newer Adobe versions, but these programs serve my needs, and I'd like to keep using them as long as possible. And they are working on other computers with recent operating systems.

Thanks for all the previous help.
Greatly appreciated.

I was infected by this CTB Blocker trojan, but have re-installed most everything from backups.

Am very afraid of it happening again, obviously.

Even though Avast did not stop it, I thought it would be a good idea to re-install it anyway.
Also thought I'd install avira.

Both apparently downloaded to the desktop fine, but would not install.
Avast comes back with a message that: "Group Policy prohibits..." Huh ?

Avira just has the installing circle arrow going around and around, forever.

From what I've read up on CTB Blocker, it "only" encrypts your text files, and video files, etc.

Nothing about it preventing virus software from installing (and running).

So, I'm wondering if the problem with Avast and Avira is something else in my system
that I have to correct ?

What do you think ?
If so, what should I check and correct ?

Or, is it most likely CTB Blocker that is preventing the new installation of both of these programs ?
Any cure ?

Would like to ask also if when I get my new PC once W10 is out, is it O.K. to normally
have several anti virus programs like Hitman, MalwareBytes, etc. all installed and running ?
Do they (tend to) interfere with each other ?

A:Installing Anti-Virus Programs Problem

It is not wise to have more than one anti virus. There are certain exceptions. Malwarebytes will run fine with other anti virus. Hitman, used only to scan would be fine also.
Regarding your inability to install, I would try to go back before the problem with system restore and then try.
Virus, do not infect previously made restore points.

It seems that my PC has a problem with executable files. The first program I tried was Acrobat reader 7. It failed getting towards the end of the download and said it was corrupt and to try re downloading it. This is the same for most other programs including virtual PC, the latest msn messenger and Java. Also, if I download a program as a Zip file, I am only able unzip all files except the exe files.

Other than this the PC runs ok. Its an Advent T9100 P4 3.2

First, Congrats to all the techs on this site for your work help, i solved a diversity of problems with the answers you gave to diferent threads, now i got mine (Found no solutions on the site and web) and i'm desperate to at least know what it is.

I formatted my pc 3 days ago(Due to a new OS i got Windows XP MCE SP3, also i was having reg problems hard to solve), I had Windows XP SP3 with Norton 360 v2, I had 2 partitions on my 250Gb HDD, 1st with 30GB for O.S. and the 2nd with the rest of free space (~200GB) for files, so I deleted the OS partition and created a new partition and formated (having my other partition untouched), it went good all the way until the Norton 360 Installation, Norton won't update with its interface and some updates when ran through run>luall.exe won't install . Surfed the web almost a day and no solutions.
So i thought it has to do with OS, backed up files on a new 320GB HDD on a partition with ~250Gb, and made the mistake to do a clean format again, to my surprise my 250Gb HDD broke , and wont let me enter the OS, and the OS installation would stuck reading for like 40 min the HDD, (Thank God I made the back up! ), ok so I decided to install new OS on a partition of 30Gb on my 320Gb HDD (Having then 2 partitions 1 with 30 2nd with 250Gb), went all good, had same problem with Norton 360 PLUS these 2 issues:

For the past 2 days I can't open various programs anymore. Examples; Limewire & Adobe Acrobat.
I get no error message, they just never open. Any ideas?

A:Can't open downloaded programs

Noting you mentioned Limewire, I'd say you've either got a viral infection already, or those files you downloaded are just viruses in disguise, and every time you run them you run the virus. Do you have a virus scanner installed? If not, you should get AVG and install it (when you've finished clearing your machine).

First job is to scan your pc with both of these free online scanners:
Panda ActiveScan
Housecall Be sure to put a check the box beside AutoClean.

Let us know what the results of the scans are.

We use windows XP on a Dell Dimension 8400 computer. Our hard drive on the office computer was going out so the tech dept replaced the drive and cloned our programs to save us from reloading everything. We have attempted to download some programs from IE and when we go to run those programs nothing happens. We are using a "work around" by going to the cmd prompt and pulling the .exe file from our desktop. Tech dept has no fix for us at this time. Can you advise??

A:Downloaded programs not running

Hi and welcome,
My suggestion would be that since this is an office pc you allow the techs there to figure out the solution. That would cover you in case something went wrong.

Hi Bretth,

Welcome to the forum.

Is sounds like .EXE lost it's proper associations. Go to this link and click on the .exe in the box to download Follow the rest of the Usage instructions for how to install it. This will fix the association to what it should.

I recently downloaded a trial version of Dreamweaver; a 30-day trial. I worked on it a little, then left it alone for a couple of days. Now, when i try to find it, I can't. Searches turn up file folders of several types, but nothing that will allow me to run the program.

Where is it???!!! Why won't a search turn up .EXE file or whatever, that will allow me to access the program. It's hiding somewhere and I can't figure out how to find it. it's far from the thirty days...maybe 10, if that.

Trying to download it again from the site doesn't work; they say that my email is already in use, so they are preventing me from downloading it again. I know I can try to contact them next week, but does anybody have a clue on this?

When i found out i had this virus, i looked up on the net about it, after some research i went on a website to download Spybot. However when i downloaded it, i just couldnt execute the program, i'd click open, nothing happens.

My McAfee has run out, so i cant use that, ive tried downloading other anti virus programs but nothing is working, i cant open the installers.

Does anyone have a clue to help?
p.s this virus must have destroyed all my restore points, i dont seem to have any restore points before i got the trojan.

To download HJTsetup.exe from TrendSecure To Download HijackThis go to the following at the File Repository
Click on the link below to Download HijackThis Self Installer:

Save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialog boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialog.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialog box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit Edit then Select All then click Edit and then click Copy doing that copies the text to the clipboard, you won't see it yet....
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
A security expert with a gold shield to the right of their name should take a look at your log - please be patient.

I created a folder on the desktop called "Program Downloads", this is where I download all the executables for my programs. When I downloaded a program by clicking "save" I was always able to easily navigate to the desktop and the appropriate folder.

For some reason now if I try to download a program it wants to download it in "user\downloads". Not surprising I suppose but it never did that before and it is difficult to get to the desktop and ultimately my Program Download folder. I don't think I changed anything. I had briefly moved the Program Download folder to My Documents and created a desktop shortcut for it but then decided to move the actual folder back to the desktop.

edit: Actually it's more widespread. Anything I do I no longer has the "desktop" option in the left pane. I have to click on C: and eventually navigate to it.

Where did the "desktop" option go?

oops I guess I have to expand the "Favorites". Wanted to delete this thread (no need to show my stupidity ) but can't figure out how.

AFTER I downloaded and ran all these programs I read on Bleeping Computer that I shouldn't be running more than one antivirus program on my computer. I also read that it's okay to run anti-malware and anti-spyware programs in conjunction with an antivirus program. So I started reading to figure out which antivirus programs I should delete. Many of them sound very similar. I don't know which to remove and which to keep.

My computer has Windows 7, it's 64-bit, and I already had McAfee on it. This is the overkill I downloaded and ran:

ARO 2011
AVG 2011
Catalyst Control Center
Glary Utilities
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Norton Security Scan
Revo Uninstaller
Window Registry Repair
WinUtilities Free Memory Optimizer
Wise Disk Cleaner
Wise Registry Cleaner

A:Downloaded too many anti- programs

At the risk of preempting the response of the BC team, I would suggest uninstalling any registry cleaner/optimizer. Benefits are minimal but there is the potential for serious problems. You are not specific about which Auslogics product you have. If it's their registry cleaner, see above, although I have used it without problems. If it's the disk defragger, keep it because it's outstanding (but is nothing to do with anti-malware). CCleaner is a class leading clean-up utility, so keep it, but just for disk clean-up, not registry cleaning. Malwarebytes is also excellent, as is revo uninstaller, but is not an anti-malware program, nor is Catalyst Control Center. I would uninstall everything else, particularly anything to do with scareware merchants Uniblue.AVG antivirus is no longer the stellar product it once was, having become bloated and heavy on resources, with mediocre detection rates to boot. I suggest you replace it with AVAST free. Avira was, until recently, my top free antivirus choice until their ASK toolbar affiliation. This would be my suggested list of products/ways to improve security:Avast free antivirusMalwarebytes Antimalware freeSuperAntispyware freeSecunia Personal Software Inspector (also ensure all older versions of products are removed) Add Web Of Trust (WOT) to your browserIf you're feeling a little more adventurous you may wish to install a better firewall than the built-in Windows one. I'm not sure if this is exactly the right post for this question, but here goes. After downloading a game, when I try to run it, sometimes a box pops up. "Which program would you like use to open this file?" Or something similar.
There is a list of programs, & a line below which says, "Always use this program to open this file?" There is a box with a check mark as a default setting beside it. Sometimes I may click on the wrong program, and because of the default check, I can't change it. I would like to know how to revert a program to its original form once this happens. I would also like to change the default setting of that check box. Any response is appreciated. Thank you for your time.

A:running downloaded programs

Find the file in question, single left click on it to highlight it, hold down the shift key and right click on the file. Now choose "Open With". Now select the correct program to use, be sure "Always use this program..." is selected and click on OK. That file type is now reassociated to open using that program you selected.

BTW, if your not sure what program to use, what are the file type/extension of the files you're trying to open.

Hello guys,
I have windows 7 ultimate SP1 and XP in different partitions installed, with all the latest updates and whenever I try to install most programs, they are corrupted from the download or will not let me install as it says:
"this file does not have a valid digital signature that verifies its publisher".
The thing is though, when i download programs in XP home edition on the other partition, they all work.
Eventually i realised that it was my Router's firewall corrupting the files (or so i thought) as i could then download some files, e.g FF wihtout them being corrupted.
However, now downloading Itunes or any anti virus software etc the downlaod is corrupted and i cannot install it. I made sure the downloads ARE compatible with win 7 x64
Any thoughts as to how i can fix this little problem?
Thanks, Firebus154

A:windows shuts down will not run downloaded programs

For some reason you are getting corrupt downloads. That will cause the data execution error.

How are you doing the downloading, and are you sure you are allowing it to complete? Can you download directly to the hard drive and run the program from there?

Is the problem only with one type of download?

There have been some similar issues with motherboards that include the Nvidia firewall.

Hi, sometimes I download a game or program from the internet, and it is downloaded as an EXE file with no icon - or that white square icon with the blue border.

I right click on it to see if i can EXTRACT files from it, but i can only do that on certain ones. A lot of the ones I have cannot be extracted, and if i simply open them, an MSDOS window comes up for a second and then disappears- nothing happens.

I also tried mounting it as an image - that doesn't work either.

They are the correct file sizes, it seems, so how do i get em working?

I suppose I can install them to find out then uninstall if I dont wish to use them (or to save them). My main point is can I change the name to a more descriptive one, By the way i have just found out that the setupeng.exe is avast so if I change it to avast will it still work, and the same for any other program I download.

So for example, I download the file ''File.rar'', download completes, but its not on the desktop.

To make it appear, I have to refresh (Right click > Refresh).
Does anyone know how to make it so that they just appear on my desktop without having to refresh?

A:Newly downloaded programs don't appear on desktop.

I assume your other shortcuts show. Maybe you should switch "Show desktop Icons" (under "View") off and then on again. Sometimes that helps - no guarantee though.

I am having a problem with programs that I have downloaded. I try to open them and I get this statement:

This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows installer package.

Can anyone tell me what I need to do to fix this problem?

I came across this by accident and am unsure if it a potential problem or not...

What started all of this is a picture that keeps appearing on different websites I visit that have advertisements. It's always the advertisement for Obama wanting moms to go back to college. The first image is "normal" (a mom with a child), but then I notice at some point the picture changed to some guy with long wild looking hair and a beard (very creepy looking). At first I noticed it only on the generic webpage for (not logged in). I contacted yahoo and they suggested I clear my cookies, etc. Which I did, and it seemed to be fine, but when I logged onto FB, that cree... Read more

Hello experts,

I have a unique problem. I have a PC with windows vista installed. I recently bought windows 7 home premium and installed a fresh copy of it. Every time I download some software like Chrome, VLC, iTunes , it downloads fine, but when it has to install it gives starnge errors. I have seen all kinds of errors.
eg: VLC gives NSIS error.
Microsoft Security Essentials gives "File Corrupt Error".
got certificate invalid error for some other software. if I download zip files, they fail with CRC check

Just to be sure t wasnt hardware issue, I installed vista as a second OS and that works fine. I am really uncertain what is causing the issue(seems network related though).

I had an old router and just purchased a new linksys router. other configurations are:
Core 2 Quad, EVGA SLI ready motherboard, 4GB DDR2 ram, ASUS EN210 gphx card.

I am really lost as what can be the issue. Any help is greatly appreciated.

thank you.

Where do downloaded updates go to before installation takes place?
I'm getting truckloads of updates downloaded but they won't install; the process begins and then locks up. Is there a file I can empty or delete and start again?

A:installing downloaded updates (RESOLVED)

I would make sure that all spyware/adware is removed before attempting to install an update. Run programs like Adaware and spybot before installing windows updates. These programs can sometimes hault the update process.

Hi I'm running XP pro with sp3 on a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop.

In the last 24 hours I've tried to download and install an Nvdia video card driver and Win media player 11 on my desktop by downloading them on my laptop. Both downloads where from the official software vendor sites.

Can download the files without any problem, but cannot install them....

...the error message mentions 'cannot unpack cab files - a lack of disk space - file maybe corrupted'. This is both on my laptop and my desktop (which isn't connected to the internet - XP pro sp2)

Notably xp isn't recognising the 'publisher' on new downloads but does on older downloads.

I've uninstalled all xp updates backdated till the 13/01/2010 - but with no success. I have also ran CCleaner, XP_Fix logon, Lavasoft, and a full Avira scan. Problem remains?

Any help appreciated
thanks dom

My daughter's Dell 8400 PC went blue screen. Since the hardware tested OK, I reinstalled XP from CD, downloaded and installed SP3 and other security updates (making it current), then reinstalled Office 2007 and updated it online. Since she had no CD for the driver for her HP 5150 printer (installed via USB port), I went to the HP website and downloaded a driver for it. I see it on the hard drive, but I know of no way to install it. MSFT repeatedly recognizes its presence and offers to help install a driver, but expects it to be on a CD drive, and complains about not finding it there. I guess that I could burn a CD to contain the driver (which is at the end of a sequence of about 6 subdirectories). But is there another way to skin this cat? Thanks.

I have a new Windows 7 64 bit machine. It currently has two user profiles. I have installed some software into my user profile. I would like it available in the other user profile. Do I have to install again or can I transfer from one profile to the other?

A:moving downloaded programs from one user account to another

Most installers will ask you if you want to install for Everyone or Just Me. Probably depends on the app if it's worth uninstalling then installing for all users. If they don't take up much disk space the easiest is probably just to install again. If the program makes configuration files under Program Files(x86) then you may want to install the second copy in another folder.

Short answer is I think it's a program by program decision.

Hi all, I downloaded an SEO program from a forum and tested it with my local anti-virus and it was clean. I installed and everything was fine, then I decided to scan with Virus Total and it found a Trojan!

I searched the Trojan name and it said it's a key logger. I've downloaded a few trojan removers and spyware scanners but nothing's been found, plz help!

I followed the rules and uninstalled STPD, here's my paste and attached. I promise never to download anything again, unless it's from Cnet or something...

P.S. I was unable to scan with the rootkit GMR, it says system file is being used

I have Windows ME,I have discovered 2 new programs in start up that I did not download by prompt.
The first is Rase location C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\sspc.exe
The second is Njvwj location C:\WINDOWS\System\vqhlbnbi.exe

I don't know what it is or what it does. I cannot find it to delete it, only disable it from start up. I found Rase had duplicated itself and found that it was a downloaded program in disk cleanup. Deleted it from downloaded programs and only one disappeared.

I have run spyware, antivirus and it does not show up as addware or a virus. Should I be worried???

Trying to free up some space on the ol' computer and since I'm a gamer, I like to keep all the games I got, I have them defulted (dunno if that's just automatic) to save on the D drive, but I have plenty of space on the C drive. Is there is a way to change that setting without too much headache.

Okay, so it's for my grandma, but I can't delete anything otherwise I'll never hear the end of it, since they were all paid programs downloaded from online.

Is there a way??? Please shine the light.

Hello. So I have recently reinstalled Windows 7 Ultimate and being a noob I forgot to back up my drivers. I'm pretty positive that all of my drivers are updated my system works fine, I can play the games I play and have sound etc etc.

I'm noticing most of the new programs I download do not open at all, or are fickle.

For example I had and Heroes of the Storm installed. For awhile would prompt to run as admin then would pop up the icon in the bottom right but would not open. when i open the hidden icons dropdown it would disappear. It was downloaded to my x86 programs folder. I uninstalled reinstalled in program files and it works. I also have a program files x68 which has nothing in it. no clue where that came from.

Last night I downloaded a VoIP client called Curse and it won't open at all. Target Path is
"C:\Users\__name__\AppData\Roaming\Curse Client\Bin\Curse.exe" however when i click on my "name" folder AppData is not present

Programs like Slim Drivers cause more issues than they solve.

Appdata should be hidden. Enable display of hidden folders in folder properties.

Download and scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware free.

Run in cmd: sfc /scannow

As far as I know Curse Client (I used it for WoW add ons) is not a VoIP app.

Before posting I tried to follow instructions and downloaded DDS to the desktop but when I tried to run it, my computer opened a box asking me what program to use to open/run it.... I could not get it to run.

I have Malewarebytes and Bitdefender but when I try to run those the same problem exists.

It seems any .exe program won't work.

I tried to run in safe mode but that triggered only a blue error screen telling me that windows was shut down because it detected a problem and said to run antivirus.

In the control panel I tried to access add/remove software but it won't allow access.

I have Windows XP.

Don't know where to begin and appreciate your assistance.

I am having a problem with programs that I had downloaded, installed and used disappearing on me the next time I turn on my computer. When I go to the shortcut and click on it, it tells me "the program or file this shortcut refers to has been changed or removed". This is getting extremely annoying. I am unsure what is going on. I am running Windows Vista Basic and Norton 360. This is a brand new laptop (purchased in the last month).
This has been going on for about a week or so now. When I first brought it home, I had no problems whatsoever with downloaded and installed files disappearing, now it seems that every time I download a program this happens. What can I do to fix this? I also have installed Norton 360 on my Windows XP laptop and haven't had this problem there. I am guessing it is a Vista-only problem. Any and all help to fix this will be greatly appreciated.

I downloaded FLV player from earlier and a few unwanted programs appeared on my desktop - namely stuff like mypcbackup and checkpoint. I had a quick google and some people have had the same problem. I disconnected my internet, manually uninstalled them and then ran a quick scan on antimalware bytes. Antimalware bytes said no threats were detected.
If possible I would like help in checking that my laptop is virus free so I can backup some important files ASAP.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Please download Rkill (courtesy of to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.rKill.exe: (renamed rKill.exe):
Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
Do not reboot until instructed.
If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.
When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.
NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): to your desktop.

Hello, I've been having a few issues with my computer lately, and as this forum has often saved my hide a few times in the past, I figured I'd come back and beg for some more mercy.
First off, the operating system I'm running is Windows Vista Home Premium. This computer was given to me by a friend a few years back, and though not the best computer, it does MOST of what I need it to. After receiving the computer, I did a factory reset, and have had no problems for well over a year, until a day or two ago.
Now for the problems! My mother was on the computer the other day, saying she took a picture and was trying to put it on the computer to show me. She then proceeded to tell me that something was installed, and after trying to decipher a computer illiterate person's description of what had happened, I eventually just went about my day. A few hours later, while playing a game online, I got a BSOD saying something like "BAD_POOL_blahblah", can't remember the last part. I chalked that up to a hardware failure, and went back on the computer and resumed what I was doing.
Later that day, I tried to install CCleaner to help tidy some things up, and when I attempted to install the .EXE, nothing happened. I tried again, and again, the same thing. And by nothing happened, I mean I double-clicked the .EXE, and literally NOTHING HAPPENED AT ALL. I also downloaded another .EXE for uTorrent, and was met with the same problem.
About an hour ago, I was attempting t... Read more

Oh joy, one more thing I just noticed, it seems that whatever I just did to the registry, when I right-click an .EXE file to install, the first option says ""%1" %*" instead of "Run...".
