Large icons after windows update

Q: Large icons after windows update

I have Windows 7 64bit. After installing the latest updates from Windows update, all my icons on my desktop are HUGE. The ones on the start menu are normal and all text is normal. The resolution is set at 1600x900 (highest) and the display setting is on smallest (100%). How do I fix this?

When viewing large and extra large photo previews, the jpeg thumbnails will not load. Is this a 64 bit issue?

Any Ideas?

A:Large, Extra Large Icons won't load

I can tell you it's not a 64 bit issue as I do not have this problem.
Beyond that, I'll have to defer to another with more expertise in this matter.

If you extract the icons from imageres.dll or shell32.dll then the maximum icon size is about 64x64 and 32x32 for most icons. I am trying to extract the largest icons, where can I get them. or am I just doing it wrong?

First post here on the SevenForums! I'm only saving the tough ones for you guys! Here's the problem:

My client's computer was infected with a virus obtained via Facebook. I removed this and multiple other infections (and I'm pretty thorough with my scanning). She gets it back, starts working on it, and apparently her devices and printers icons are blank. Not missing, like with a "blank page" icon, just... blank. Here's the kicker: it only happens with large and extra large icons. It also happens with normal folder icons. When I change it to medium or lower, they come back. I've tried rebuilding the icon cache database several times, tried sfc /scannow, tried chkdsk, tried uninstalling any recent updates, etc... There have been no hardware changes, the hard drive has been tested as good (no bad sectors), her dual monitors are at a sane resolution, and I'm confident that the viruses has been removed. Trust me -- I've tried all the obvious stuff I can think of. Thanks and Good luck!

Edit: Also, I did about 30 minutes of searching through previous threads. Couldn't find a thing, but I could have missed it...

Well you probably pulled some icon cache files off that were infected but also had the L and XL icons. If sfc didnt work you could try a repair install. It will re-install only the files with different hash marks.

Hello there,

Yes; i am using ClassicShell, BUT i use the default Windows 8.1 Start button (cause i like the way it looks).

Thing is, when i change my taskbar icons to small, the size of the Start button is also scaled down. This looks out of place / ugly on the taskbar imo.

Does anyone here know if it is possible to use the original size and original Start button when small taskbar icons are used?

This is how it looks now:

A:Large Windows Start button when small taskbar icons used?

Hi there. Don't know how to reduce the size, but here's a little program that one of the members named hb860 created to eliminate it from the taskbar. I've used it for quite some time and works great. Hope this helps you.

I've seen multiple posts here and other forums and I have tried all of the steps provided in those posts but it is not resolving my issue. I have the exact same issue as the user in THIS THREAD. I have tried the icon database rebuild (both manually and using the bat file HERE), I have tried ie4uinit.exe - ClearIconCache from command prompt, I have tried Disk Cleanup and checked the box to delete icon cache and I have tried different cache size amounts using the steps HERE. I've tried these all from normal boot and safe mode. I don't know what else to do. The icons that have the problem keep changing every time I restart the PC. I can change them to another icon, rename the icon the shortcut had previously been using and reapply that icon and it shows normal at that time but as soon as I restart the PC, icons change to the smaller size on random shortcuts again. What other steps are there?

Thanks in advance.

A:Multiple icons showing in smallest size when using Extra Large Icons

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Have you tried the batch file in this tutorial:
Folder View Settings - Reset All to Default
It resets the area of the registry that stores some desktop icon info.
warning: read the note about desktoprestore.

You might also want to try combining the batch file for icon cache rebuild with this one... only kill/restart explorer once at the end.

Does this problem happen if you create (& log onto) a new (test) user account?

I have two icons that I want to assign to two folders. Unfortunately, something has gone wrong. Let me explain what happened step by step:

1. I have two folders: "A" and "B".
2. I have two icons (.ico files): "A" and "B".
3. I place icon "A" in folder "A" and icon "B" in folder "B".
4. I assign icon "A" to folder "A" and icon "B" to folder "B".
5. I notice that I've switched the icons around.
6. I move icon "A" to folder "B" and icon "B" to folder "A".
7. I rename icon "A" to "B" and icon "B" to "A".
8. I assign icon "A" to folder "A" and icon "B" to folder "B".
9. I notice that I still get to see the switched-around icons that I assigned in step 4 in the large and extra large icon views. In the smaller views the folder icons are now correct.

Here's what I did to try solve this problem:

- Follow two tutorials: Icon Cache - Rebuild and Default File Associations - Restore in Windows 8 (for .ico files).
- Remove the icon cache using the Disk Cleanup utility.
- Run "sfc /scannow" and "chkdsk /f /r".
- Run CCleaner to cleanup the registry and manually remove some registry keys that I pinpointed by looking for the registry keys that change when I assign an icon to a folder.
- Restart the computer and the "explorer.exe&... Read more

Hello! Yes, I'm a newbie and a numpty. This place looks wonderful! I hope you can help me.

Here's what happened: I reinstalled Windows for my sister, who is visually impaired. I just installed Windows XP Pro. Just finished it, and then handed it over to her, to customize her settings. Since she has bad vision, she usually lowers the resolution down to 800x600 and has the font size and title bar sizes larger. Well as soon as I left her alone with her computer, she messed up the windows or icon settings so bad, so everything is HUGE. Everything is so huge, that (what should be) small menus now fill the whole screen. We can't get to the part of the preferences window to change the resolution to something higher, and we can't get to anywhere (that we know of) to change anything back to something resembling normal. Basically, we can't do anything anymore.

I know I can reinstall Windows XP all over again, but since I JUST DID THAT I'd like to avoid having to do it all over again. Is there some way to reset the preferences, without having to reinstall the whole operating system for something so seemingly idiotic? Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Whenever I view a folder which contains .MP4 (H264) video files in large icon view (shows thumbnails), Windows 7's Explorer crashes. Explorer loads for a few seconds, the green progress bar shows up, and then boom!, Explorer crashes. The thumbnails are not shown before crashing. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I tried setting Folder options to 'Always show icons, never thumbnails' (disables thumbnails) on the same folder with MP4 (H264) video files and Explorer doesn't crash if the MP4 thumbnails aren't shown. I tried testing in other folders containing other video formats (with 'Always show icons, never thumbnails' set to off) like .AVI/Xvid, without an MP4/H264 file, and Windows Explorer shows the thumbnails fine without crashing.

I have not currently experienced problems with other formats, only MP4/H264. The only media players that I have installed are KMPlayer and VLC Media Player which both do not install external codecs, AFAIK. The only external codec I have installed is CoreAVC, but I have been using CoreAVC for months (KMPlayer+CoreAVC is one of the first things I installed in Windows 7) without any problems (this issue just arose a few days ago).

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate, 32 bit.

Note: I prefer a solution that will not end up disabling video thumbnails for MP4 files. I still would like to see MP4 video thumbnails, if possible. If the video files themselves are problematic, I reckon Explorer should not crash and just not show the thumbnails.

Hi everyone,

Im new here and just stumbled on this site, and Im glad I did.

I had a virus, and am pretty sure it is gone. I have done alot of scanning with malwarebytes, nod32, etc. all in safe mode. And I think it is all gone.

Anyways I did a PC recovery (F10 while pc is starting up) and when I do this of course it wipes out all the windows updates that have been loaded up over the years. So there are 99 updates to reload up. When I load them all up at once I have no internet access and I get messages that pop up on restart as in blah blah blah C:/windows/microsoft.net/framework/v2.050727/mscorwks.dll could not be loaded. Also C:/ programfiles/disc/discover.exe cant be loaded either. Before I load all the updates, the pc works fine.

Any solutions out there? Am I just loading too many updates at once on the pc?

My pc is compaq with amd athalon 64 processor 3500+ 991 MHz with 2GB RAM

Thanks in advance for the help

In Vista I used to be able to view a folders contents and arrange the files by date modified or name etc by clicking on the field on the title bar (I think it's called title bar). Now in Windows 7 when viewing large icons the title bar is missing and I have to right click in the folder and then choose 'sort by', then select what I wish to sort by. This takes a lot longer than having the title bar there. Is there a way to get the title bar back when viewing by large icons.

Thanks.

A:How do I get the title bar when using large icons

The snipping tool is a wonderful thing. Attaching a picture of what you mean is very helpful.. You can attach a file by using the paper clip after making Snipping tool copy.

For now all I might suggest is to adjust the view settings, or use the Organize option to go to folder options which are both in the "Title Bar" or close anyway

I don't understand why it is when I create an internet shortcut on a Windows 7 desktop, most of the icons are "miniature", where as some of them are full size on the desktop. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to which shortcut will be small and which will be full size.

Please see the attached screenshot. The site "Brass Goggles" is full size and "seven forums" is miniature.

On XP, these same sites were all full size. I have no idea what is causing this erratic behavior. Any ideas?

I installed 2010 and was surprised to see the tiny icons in the toolbar. So that those of you not familiar with the problem understand, the toolbar icons in Visual Studio 2010 are about half the size of the icons in the message tools on this forum.

Searching the web I see a number of complaints but no solutions. Microsoft rep's just "thank us" for our concern. Might anyone know how if there is a fix or a hack to get some resonably sized (twice as big at least) icons for the toolbar?

Hi there,
I was just wondering is there anyway to edit the size of the icons more than the 'Extra large Icons' maybe a tool or some manual way ?
Thanks.

A:Bigger than 'Extra large Icons' ?

Hello MoeX,

Very good question and this has baffled me; i have done some research for you.

It appears that a icon's Value (size) are in pixels and range from 0x20 (32) to 0x100 (256) with the default being 0x60 (96).
(32) being the smallest, and (256) the "extra Large".

However Microsoft don't allow bigger then 256 Pixels (Extra Large). Bit of a bummer really.
There 3rd party applications available that allow you to view your photos in a bigger view, but not permanent thumbnails.

I'm sure there is a way to make them bigger if you had edited the registry, but i DO NOT recommend this, unless you are 100% sure what you are doing. and have a Back-up and Restore Point.

I hope I can explain this properly.

In Windows 7 Professional x64, I have specified the size of icons appearing on my desktop (about half way between 'small' and 'medium'). This works very well and consistently.

However, when I move or copy a file to the desktop via right-click, or when I create a shortcut on the desktop via right-click, Windows creates a large size image of the file icon for me to drag and drop. Not only is the icon itself large, but it includes a substantial amount of space on all four sides of the icon. My file and folder icons in Windows Explorer are not even close to that size.

This causes a problem when I have several Windows open, because in that case I may be moving/copying/shortcut-ting to a relatively small area on my desktop, and the icon I am moving/copying/shortcut-ting doesn't fit into that small space because the icon, including the area around it, is so large. Consequently, Windows moves it to some other place on my desktop, where it finds enough space, and then I have to go looking for the icon.

This problem is particularly annoying when I have several files to move or copy, in which case Windows may scatter the moved/copied icons all over my desktop.

How can I reduce the size of the icon that appears for drag-and-drop, as well as the selected space around it?

Consequently, Windows moves it to some other place on my desktop, where it finds enough space, and then I have to go looking for the icon.

I suggest you turn off the "align icons to grid" and "auto arrange icons" options, to give you complete 100% control over where you want your desktop icons to live. Windows will not interfere at all.

Right-click on desktop, move the mouse over View to get the flyout, and uncheck these two options.

Note that this won't solve your "large icons" issue when you perhaps would want them to be somewhat smaller. But it will give you 100% control over icon placement and will never see Windows move it somewhere you don't want it to go. Wherever you put it... that's where it will stay, unless YOU drag it somewhere else.

Hi there, my problem is when I start up in the morning my icons and gadgets are extra large and I mean large, I solve this by right clicking on desktop, click screen resolution (which is also extra large) then click detect. This opens a normal size window and I am good to go. The display is set at (default) 100% and never changes so that isn't the problem. Also this only happens on a cold start up and not if I reboot
or restart while while I have been using the computer. I hope someone out there can help me with this small problem because it is very annoying, many thanks, Shibumi1.

This is actually for a friend and I tried everything I could think of but nothing works. She recently installed WindowBlinds and as she was installing Avast it apparently happened (if this helps)

What happened is the icons in the System Tray, and the Quick Launch icons because the Start menu, and even the icons inside the Start menu have enlarged. They are probably 1.5x the size of the original and are also blurry. The time in the bottom right now includes the date also.

I thought her taskbar was moved up a notch, but it's as low as it can go. So thats not the problem. If you right-click the taskbar when it is unlocked and go to View, you can change the icons from large to small. It's on small. So something else happened.

Any clue what could've happened?

A:Folder Icons Are invisible when viewed large

Hi Qwerty77
Try this:

1) Right click the folder and choose properties.
2) Click on the Customize Tab.
3) Choose Change Icon at the bottom
Pick an icon you want top use for the folder, then click ok.

You may have inadvertently clicked on a "white" space when choosing icons. (It is possible to create invisible folders in that manner, hence the black box.
Try right clicking on your desktop first, and click refresh.
Hope this helps...

Hello everyone,
I've been searching tooth and nail all over the internet for how to do this but to no avail. Here's what I want
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6481804/Menu.png

I want my context menu to have big icons and small text (left) but no matter what I do it's always the default (right) I've tried registry tweaks, and increasing the DPI to around 300 on XP style size increase. It increased the icon size but at a cost all the windows were completely unusable but it showed that there was a value to increase to get that effect... I just haven't found it.

I know it's an oddly specific request but I have this Windows 7 tablet that with this edit be incredibly helpful for Menu navigation. I assume it's a registry tweak somewhere...

A:Need help making large icons in the context menu

Hello and welcome Lucern mate I have tried various things with the the properties etc etc and I am guessing it will have to be a registry change. Have you looked though the tutorials for changing icons sizes?

The only one I can find I tried but mine does not have that up / down control just customise.

Right click in an open space in that area > properties > and pick the Strat menu / customise.

However I found this but did not try it

After playing a game last night, which I have played on many other computers with no problem, all graphics on my screen are centered and icons and font are large. There is about an inch of black space on the right and left sides of the screen with no graphics. I am running Windows XP on a Dell inspiron B130. I have restarted and checked the settings, but can't find anything. Any help would be much appreciated!

Try a system restore to before you played the game.

A:Simultaneous large and small desktop icons?

Hi and welcome to the forums!

My first suggestion might be a bit complex but I'll suggest it anyway. This tutorial - Replace Vista's missing Computer desktop icon with a custom gadget on the Windows Sidebar | TechRepublic - details how to create a gadget to launch my computer. Now, this should theoretically work for any application and on windows 7. To could then launch your program through the newly created gadget.

If that is a little bit too difficult there is a program by the company Stardock called fences. Download here: Fences - Windows Desktop Organization Software. This allows you to organise your desktop more efficiently.

Hopefully one of these will solve your issue

I have my resolution at 1600x900, my display is at Medium 125%, and my icons are Large. I was just playing something and I went from windowed mode in the game to full screen with just a click. When I returned to the desktop many of the steam game icons had reset to small icons inside a box. It's very strange. I tried to create new shortcuts via steam but they are still the same, small icons inside a box. Not all the games were affected, but most of them. I am just wondering how it happened and how to fix it. I never had this before.

A:Large desktop icons reset with Steam

Sometimes the resolution does not reset itself back to your setting after you played a game in full screen (that has a different resolution).

I am not 100% sure what icons you mean, but it sounds like you mean the desktop icons? You should be able to:
> Right click on your desktop
> Go to 'View >'
> Select 'Large icons'

I've got a little registry file that I run on all my new installs. One thing I been wanting to add to it is the ability to set the Folder View settings to "Large Icons" for "All Folders". The manual way to do this is...

- Open folder
- Right-Click > View > Large Icons
- Tools > Folder Options > View > Apply to Folders

So basically I'm looking for the registry key that I can change to set this via reg file. I've tried digging around in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU & Bags but it looks like those are for all folders. I'm looking for the one specific key/value that windows checks to determine what the folder view should be.

Thanks in advance!

If you drag it down too far it will dissapear so be careful. You can get it back by just reversing the drag.

Hello. I am using Vista Home Edition 32-bit version SP1 and in the past few weeks my thumbnail previews and icons have disappeared for folders that are set for Medium Icons or Large Icons.

If I open a folder that is set for Medium or Large Icon view, instead of getting thumbnails and folder previews, I'm now getting blank spaces with the file name under it...

Folder upon opening:
Now if I cycle through the various views - list, details, tiles, and back to icons - it will generate and display thumbnails ... but with two problems: (1) notice the folder images it just generated appear smaller than they should be, and they are not showing any preview of what's inside the folder.
(2) the thumbnails for the jpgs are there only as long as the window is open and I don't navigate elsewhere. As soon as I leave the folder, they revert back to a blank space.

Hello,
I just reinstalled Windows 7 x64 yesterday. I have been adjusting the settings in Win7 to get it like it was before, but after trying lots of things and searching Google and this site I cannot find the answer or even a reference for my problem.

If I change the power settings from Balanced to High Performance or Power Saving, or when my laptop comes out of Sleep, a large light bulb with a circular meter appears for a second or two, then disappears. What do I do to prevent this large icon from appearing?

I am running Windows 7, x64 RC 2 (7100) build, downloaded from Microsoft a month or two back.

Legitimate product key that I received from MS is used, and it is activated through MS as well.

Everything has been working great, this is a fresh install from 08/01/2009.

I noticed my MS Windows "Update" icon appear on the task bar, and decided to have a look, I already went ahead and selected for windows to check for updates but to ask for me to install/chose which ones.

Anyways, there was a huge list of updates for MS office 2003 (yes i know there are newer versions but I like 2003), so I went ahead and selected a few, most of them were security updates, and there was one update for microsoft silverlight.

I went ahead and installed them all, restarted, and all of my desktop icons , and task bar icons including shortcuts began disappearing, then I tried moving mouse over them and they would appear and or disappear again.

I have not messed with any hacks or tweaks to remove the logo from the "windows 7 evalutation ..." from the desktop , that doesn't really bother me so i dont mess with removing it. Besides, I don't like installing stuff that messes with my registry, let alone on an unstable build.

Moving forward, I went through the recently installed updates list, and figured one of the new updates must have triggered this new found problem.

Sure enough, it was the [Microsoft Office 2003 (Security Update)] that triggered this, I don't know why, how, or w... Read more

Dear Sirs,
all my attempts have proved futile and you are my last hope.

Situation:
I have replaced the icons for 3 of my programs, browser, mail client & mp3 player with custom icons from the web (16x16 ico, 32x32 ico, 48x48 ico, 256x256 png). They show up correctly in the taskbar itself (small and large) BUT the preview windows title bar icon remains the original (See attachments).

Attempted solutions:
Clearing Icon Cache, Prefetch, MUICache, tried all icon color depths, removing Icon completely, re-installing programs

The aesthetic discrepancy is driving me
I believe that windows has somewhere stored a type of "favicon" upon 1st launch of the programs and I can't find it.

If anyone can help me thank you very much, I hope I simply overlooked something really straightforward

Google searches on this forum and generally on the web and Microsoft came up with no working solution - although it appears to be a problem that has afflicted Windows 7 and Windows 8 users too. I finally solved the problem by comparing the services list of the PC with the problem to that of a PC that did not have the problem.

I updated three Windows 8.1 PCs to Windows 10. All updates went fine but one PC had an annoying problem that (finally) I have now solved. This was a brand new Lenovo PC out of the box with Windows 8.1 pre-installed. My first step was to run the free upgrade to Windows 10. So I recently restored my computer and went to install all possible updates and now pinned taskbar icons can't be changed. I think it has to do with an update released sometime in the past month or two because I noticed my family computer also has this problem. So I restored mine back to factory and can change icons once again. I didn't install/modify anything apart from windows updates. Is anyone else experiencing this?

A:Taskbar Icons Won't Change (Suspect a Windows Update)

I've not experienced this, nor heard of anyone else who has. Do you mean the icons for the loaded windows lined up on the Taskbar, or the icons of the programs showing within the System Tray?

Hello all
My computer just updated and now all my desktop icons have a super wide spacing. The icons are not stretched, but when I mouse over them the selection box is 8x the icon width. In addition to that, most of the icons are now overllapping. All desktop icon options do nothing and display scaling does nothing but make them bigger or smaller.
Help!

I had a problem where some spywear or something turned off my windows update and fixed it following the instructions in this post http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/147466/windows-update-turned-off-cant-turn-it-back-on/ . Now, before finding a solution to the problem I was following some Microsoft instructions were they asked to copy some command to the registry trying to make WU and the Backgroung Intelligent Transfer Service to "work". I remembered I tried several times and entered the registry command. Now when I open up my Control Panel, there are 5 Windows Update icons additional to the original one. The icons do not have the text below and do not do anything . How can I get rid of them???

I see no evidence of an AntiVirus program on your system. This must be resolved. Connecting to the Internet without antivirus protection is a "Welcome" doormat for malware. It can take as little as eight seconds to infect an unprotected computer.

Here are a few very good free Antivirus products which are available:Avira PersonalEdition Classic
Avast!
AVG
Select one of these, or another of your choice. Do not install more than one antivirus program because they will conflict with each other. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch new malware that may have come out.

Install, update definitions, and run a full system scan with the Anti-Virus of your choice.

Microsoft has already introduced a new icon set in Windows 10, but the company doesn?t want to stop here and is now working to refine the entire UI in the operating system with another update.

Screenshots that were published online by Twitter user @cadenzza92 and coming from an unreleased build reveal several new icons that Microsoft has prepared for Windows 10, but also other visual tweaks that will be part of an upcoming update.

Right now, it seems that these changes will be first introduced in an insider build, so Windows 10 testers will be the first to get them, while everyone else can receive it at a later time depending on the received feedback.

As you can see in the screenshots below, Windows 10 is scheduled to receive refined icons in the key areas of the operating system, so a new printing, personalization, keyboard, and other device icons are all expected to be released.

At the same time, the software giant?s also working on improving the personalization screen, so in these screenshots, for example, Microsoft is using a bigger preview window than in the current builds.

Hi

Forgive me I am not very computer literate.

Since my windows update 10/7/2014 0315 my computer doesn't work.

Tried:

1. Running explorer from Task manager > new task > explorer.exe

2. tried system restore to 8 July 2014

I am getting reconciled to having to reinstall Windows 7 but reluctant as:

1. acer do not provide a windows 7 disk and not sure how to reinstall from the laptop's own memory

2. When I first got the acer I burned 6-7 dvds with a system restore so I could use that but do not want to lose all my data

3. Really not sure what I am doing lol

4. really don't want lose my data and I have no means to back up the 540gb of data I reluctant to lose it all.

Please help.....Assume I am a real noob.

p.s. a message window just popped up saying "explorer.exe system call failed"

Hey, I upgraded to Windows 10 about a month ago. Two days ago my computer is all the sudden automatically downloading some
Massive update that took a long time and rebooted my computer without prompting me.

After the download was complete I was able to use my computer seemingly as normal, but upon the next restart, the start menu wouldn't open, and the mouse wouldn't click on any of the icons. I tried a restart and got two pop up error messages saying something like "Windows failed to start properly." I tried a hard reboot a coupe times, same thing.

Google searched the problem, found this and followed the steps: How to fix Windows 10 start-up problems - Blackscreen, Bootloop, Infinite Loading [HD 60FPS] - YouTube

No luck. Now every time I boot up my computer it goes to the "automatic repair screen."

I have tried every option available from the "automatic repair screen" menu, including System Restore: because I just downloaded Windows 10, I had no restore points. System Image Recovery: it says have no image to recover). Start Up Repai: tells me Windows can't repair the problem. Command Prompt: I've been able to get in there but I don't really know what to do once there (tried what was suggested in the video above, no luck, everything was already set to zero) Startup Settings:WAS working, I was able to start up in Safemode once, still couldn't click anything and start menu still wouldn't work. Now when I click on Startup Settings and ... Read more

I have been running two hard drives in my Asus M60J for close to two years. It did not come with an actual Windows CD. I have a HDD which has the original operating system on it (Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit). I have a second SSD running Windows 7 as well. I am able to access the HDD from the operating system on my SSD. Right after Windows required a restart after installing an update the Windows welcome screen comes up with the default blue background with the "EN" icon in the upper left but no users/shutdown icons appear (This is on the HDD, the SSD OS works fine). My cursor is active and I can bring up the sticky key window by pressing the shift key five times. The screen flickers black for a split second and then comes back to the blue graphical background intermittently. Mostly the blue graphical background stays up.

I realize that the normal answer is to restore a previous back, etc. Only one backup shows up from 2009. I would prefer to fix the problem instead of avoiding it. I may be wrong but it feels like this is some kind of minor registry/user account issue or something.

So no user login icon when launching Windows normally or launching safe mode/command prompt.

Here are the things I've tried after Googling and after removing my SSD:

1. I ran offline virus scans and found nothing

Try a System Restore going back as far as necessary.

You can also uninstall the suspect Updates to see if it resolves it.

If it installed IE11 there are issues with that update resolved by changing DPI back to 100%. I would uninstall IE11 until they get it fixed.

Hi Guys,

i'm a newbie to this forum so please forgive me if i make a mistake with the procedures & rules.

I recently (march 1st 2008) re-installed my XP prof on my PC using a Norton Ghost Image i had. This imaged fine & the system ran very quickly (like it does with a new install of XP). I then decided to complete the microsoft updates so my systemwould be fully up to date. After i had completed all the updates i realised that my XP boot up became very slow.
It was normal up to the welcome screen but then when it gats to my desktop the system hangs and does not let me do anything for around 2-3 minutes (normally would only take 20-30 seconds at this point). The hourglass mouse icon appears and i have to wait a long time before the system is usable again. Furthermore, i had around 6 or 7 system tray icons on my XP (including AVG, volume control, network connection, usb device connectoin, etc). All of my system tray icons have gone missing except the network connection icon.
This has all happened after i did the MS update.
I decided that this may be a one-off problem & so i re-formatted my system & re-installed XP from the image i had (on the 8th March 2008). Again, the system loaded fine and was booting up very quickly & with all the system tray icons showing. But after i did the MS updates again the XP boot became very slow & system tray icons dissapeared (as it did before). This is when i realised that the problem must be with the MS updates.

Try uninstalling the updates one at a time until you find the offending update, then reinstall the rest. One thought is seeing how you're using a ghost image, it might be the WGA tool

Following some updates to Win 8.1, I am encountering problems with MS Access displaying GIF files on reports on some machines (nominally at the same update state). By moving the Access database to a machine that is not currently showing the problem, I have been able to prove that it is not the Access db causing the problem - something I previously suspected as machines with Windows Update turned off or those that have been moved back to 8.0 (plus those running earlier versions of Windows) display the GIF files correctly in Access.

The error message we are getting is;-
?2114 <program name> doesn?t support the format of the file ?d:\PF_Sign\M11_V2846.gif,? or the file is too large. Try converting the file to BMP or GIF format.?
where M11_V2846.gif is a variable file name which links to the Image frame on the current report page. All the files are very small (normally not more than 5kb) and are already in a gif format (they are an image version of an INK signature created using a standard utility on tablet machines).

If the GIF file is viewed outside of MS Access, it is displayed without a problem.

The problem is:-

only occurring on machines running Win 8.1 (32 and 64 bit)does not occur on initial update to 8.1has been seen to ?fix? itself following one Windows update - only to re-appear after another updateis not happening on XP, Vista, Win 7 or Win 8 machineshas not been seen on a Win 8.1 machine with Auto Update switched off following initial update to 8.1.a... About 4 months ago my computer started starting up and only showing my background. It didn’t the taskbar or any of my desktop icons. This only happened every once and a while so I just ignored it for the most part. I could get the taskbar and icons back sometimes by starting up a program using the task manager, logging off and logging back on using the task manager, or just shutting down my computer by holding in the power button for a few seconds. The power button was the only way that worked all the time to get my desktop back to normal. Also the task manager wouldn’t work at shutting down the computer by command so holding in the power button was the only way to restart it when it does this. Starting about a week ago I cannot access my mp3 player all of a sudden. My mp3 player does connect, it shows the USB icon on task bar and mp3 player screen lights up to show it’s connected. Whenever I go into my computer the drive that the mp3 player is suppose to be doesn’t show up and when I type in the address it gives a pop-up saying the drive is inaccessible. I’ve had my mp3 player for 2-3 years and have connected it regularly in the past and have never had this type of problem. Also I have managed to connect it to my mother’s computer without any problems just today so it proves it isn’t my mp3 player that’s causing the problem. 2 days ago I got some sort of error while trying to load a website, I don’t recall the exact message and ha... This references: Quick Launch Bar: icons don't wrap even though there is room - a post by chillz which discovers a "bug" with the taskbar not resetting the row-sizing for toolbars when dragging the taskbar to the left then back to the bottom.

I, for a while now, have been using a custom quick-launch toolbar on my taskbar with the taskbar being 2 unit-lines in height and having the taskbar on my secondary ( left ) monitor. When I first set this up it showed 3 lines of small icons in the toolbar and up to 2 lines on the standard taskbar. This was perfect because the toolbar didn't reset the order every time I launched an application contrary to how the pinned application system works. With pinned applications, no matter what position I drop the icon, the order always resets and floats from place to place so that system of organizing icons is disgusting because you have apps between icons of apps that aren't running some times and other times the running applications are above and below with or without grouping enabled.

The vertical display would be the ideal way for me to view unlaunched applications ( see aforementioned topic ) because they group together and launched apps come after; in horizontal mode the taskbar is chaotic without a toolbar organizing the apps to one side but then you lose the functionality of the pinned-application system ( if you forfeit usage of that chaotic horizontal system in favor of how the vertical system works but in horizontal mod... Hello all,

I have been having a seriously frustrating time trying to fix icons displaying in my games folder way too small. Every icon is a custom x256 by x256 icon, and I have seen them all work properly at one point. However, for some reason these icons now appear in their 32x by 32x bit forms, as seen in the attached image.

I have tried everything, including rebuilding and refreshing the icon cache, editing the registry value to x4068 size, only refreshing or rebuilding then restarting, moving the icon files, moving the game shortcuts, so on. All of these shortcuts are offline .exe files, and these icons have taken me a long time to build.

I'm sick and tired of trying to solve it myself, so I've come here for help. The only thing that has worked so far was a Microsoft support file, which fixed the problem until I switched my account to my brothers so he could play, where his icons were broken and when I logged back in so were mine. I haven't been able to find the support file since. I'm very tired of trying to fix this computer, with some V9.com malware stuck in there and rooted so I cannot remove it, broken Windows Photo Viewer that won't even launch, general messes. Do you guys have any clue how I can fix my icons?

A:Some Extra Large Icons appear Extra Small

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
We might look into this malware issue first,
Post all scan results for review,
Repeat for all users,
Review Jacee?s instructions to run Adwcleaner here post #7,
Ignore the title of the thread,
Instant Savings App
Screen shot of the download button to use for Adwcleaner
You can use these free tools to see if they find anything,
Manually Update them before running full scans,
Try not to use your computer while the scans are running, (one at a time of course).
Uncheck the box to Activate the Free trial from the final install options,
Also use the Custom scan option not the Threat scan,
Select the drive to scan usually C,
If your really infected check the box to scan for Rootkits = this scan option will take several hours to complete,
Never use your machine while scans are running for best results,
