Desktop erased. Can't Locate "My Documents" folder and "Start Menu" folders

Q: Desktop erased. Can't Locate "My Documents" folder and "Start Menu" folders

Good day all.

I recently restarted my computer only to be met with an empty desktop.

Also, My Start Menu is empty. I can't locate any of programs or documents.a Right clicking and going to windows explorer, I could only view : "My Computer", "Windows (C); and when I click on them, they contain few irrelevant files.

In other words I can't find my personal saved documents, "my document" folder , recycle bin and all other programs.

My wifi still works so the only thing I can do on my system is browse on the internet.

However, I can open a microsoft office file, PDF files, if I download it directly from my email or from an external drive.

I can save files on my new blank desktop.

I presume this is a virus attack.

Can anyone be kind enough to advise me on what to do?

Thanking you in advance.

A: Desktop erased. Can't Locate "My Documents" folder and "Start Menu" folders

Your files and folders may have been hidden by the virus, go to folder options and 'show hidden files and folder' to see if they actually are hidden. If they are, you can use Grindler's UnHide tool to 'unhide' all of your files and folders. As for the virus, move this thread to the virus and other malware removal forum in order for it to be noticed by an authorised malware removal member.
Good luck!

I have Windows 7 Home Pro installed on my laptop, and I'm one of those people that likes to keep my Start Menu folder OCD-tidy.

In W7 (as I believe it was in Vista) there are two folders that handle the program shortcuts for the Start Menu. There's a user-specific one (for programs only that user can use) and the all-users one (for programs everyone can use).

C:\Users\Joe\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
and
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

I'm the only user on my laptop, so I'd like to just consolidate these two folders into one to make it easier for me to sort and keep track of. Is there any reason not to just drag-and-drop stuff from one to the other? Is there one that I should use in preference to the other (should I keep everything in the "user" folder or the "all-users" folder?

I'm pretty sure I just did this without any problem in Vista, but I wanted to make sure so I don't mess anything up as I'm new to W7.

Thanks,
Joe

I don't know how I did this but when I go to START and then select DOCUMENTS, nothing happens at all. It just mysteriously disappeared. Everything else works just fine. I'm flabbergasted, really. I have no idea what happened. It's not hidden - I checked.

The only way I can access it is the old-fashioned long way: c, users, owner name, documents. This is a real pain and I'd really like to resolve this. There must be a way to do so; has to be. The Start Menu is supposed to be Quick Links and all the others ones on it open-up/function/work, if you follow me.

Can any kind and bright members here please help me with this please? Pretty please?

Also, how did the folder move? What could do this? I need to know this to ensure that it never happens again.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium
Edition, 32 bit.

Crossing my fingers and toes here that I can get this problem fixed.

Thanks all and have a great day! :-)

A:Lost my "Documents" folder in my Start Menu

Hello dottie5917, I am still a bit unsure what you mean "you lost your Documents folder" because you also mention that when you click on Documents in the Start Menu (I am assuming you mean the hyperlink) also nothing happens...let's see...if what you mean is that when you, from the Start Menu, click onto the hyperlink Documents and nothing happens (the Documents window does not open), then, I sugest you do the following: Go to Control Panel/Task Bar and Start Menu/click on the Start Menu Tab/then click on Custom or Personalise/scroll down until you see Documents/then make sure that "show as hyperlink" is ticked...if on the other hand you actually lost one of your folders inside the Documents window just: Do a Search for the folder using its name/transfer back the folder to the Documents window...and sorry but I am unsure what caused either of these situations...hope you can sort it

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

I added a slave drive to my Windows XP Pro computer, and it appears to work properly.

However, when I open the "Documents and Settings" folder (on the slave drive E:\, which is Windows XP Home Edition -- not XP Pro), I do not see any of my documents, sub-folders, etc. There should be MANY sub-folders (inside the "My Documents" folder which isn't even visible), with hundreds of documents, jpgs, etc. within it.

When that drive is installed as the Primary drive in my other computer, the User "Larry" (which is me) has all Administrative privileges. On the computer that I'm running now (with the slave drive in it), I also have Administrator privileges. I own both computers.

My User Name "Larry" is password-protected when I login to Windows (when the drive is Primary and installed into my main computer (not this computer with XP Pro).

I've tried clicking on all the users; Administrator, Default User, Larry, Guest, etc. (Note: I get an "Access Denied" error when clicking on the Guest "Documents and Settings" folder).

So, the questions are:

1. Why can't I see any files or subdirectories in the "Documents and Settings" folder on the slave drive?

2. There's supposed to be a folder named "My Documents," but I can't find it. Normally, that path is "C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents".
--- Where is that folder? It contains all the files I'm looking for.

After privacy protection installed itself I no longer have a desktop. The task bar is still on the screen as well as the start menu. But when I click on the start menu there is nothing on it. The only programs that are running are " privacy protection", "windows security center", and "XP anti-virus 2012". All three of these are running completely by themselves and I never installed or downloaded any of them. I cannot get on the internet or do anything with my computer. I know that privacy protection and XP anti-virus 2012 are fake virus protection but when my computer was still somewhat functional, these programs did not allow me to run anything which made it hard to fight it off. I have some really important stuff on my computer and I would hate to lose it all.

Somehow my "Shared Documents" Folder got renamed to "Documents" when setting up my wireless network. Now when I am unable to install some software because that file name is missing.
I am not able to rename the "Documents" folder because I get the error that it is a system folder and cannot be renamed. Please help.

A:Unable To Rename "Documents" Folder To Original Name "Shared Documents"

You can change the share name over the network. My machine does the same thing.

When you click 'Share this Folder over the network' you are given the option to name the share. It will warn you that if it is over 12 chars, then older machines on the network may not be able to see it etc etc. Ok this and then check that the shared documents folder appears as such on the machine you wish to access with.

Bear in mind you folder will be showing in your 'Network Folders' as 'Documents on {computername} ({computername}). Can you not just point to this folder on the second machine instead?

Hi Gang,

I wish to place on my desktop the file that contains "my recent documents" and so forth that I was accustomed to with Win 98SE. I cannot find it in windows explorer.

I do understand a similar one is located in the start/my recent documents, but the list is small and limited. The other one has a list of twenty or so with other files also listed.

Any help? I have made the folders so I can see all of them to no avail.

I have WinXP.

Thanks,

davidrs

A:Locate "My Recent Documents" Folder

Simple... Create a new shortcut and have it point to the Recent docs folder. For example:

C:\Documents and Settings\PROFILE_NAME\Recent

Note: Instead of "Recent" you will see "My Recent Documents" since the folder name "Recent" is hidden in Windows Explorer.

Hi all,

I'm puzzling this one. In the folder options when I choose 'view' the radio button to show the hidden files is missing. I've already checked the registry at the HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Advanced/Hidden

and everything seems ok (value for 'Type' is 'group' etc.). Using the XP tweak (Kelly's corner #155) shows the hidden files, but the button still missing.

Another thing that I encountered with was that from the start menu the "Help and Support" not working. Again, the registry seems fine, and the process is activated (started). This came up when I tried to use system restore option - with no success.

A:missing "show hidden files" button + "Help and Support" not working from start menu

Ok I found the answer (after quite a lot searching), as follows:

1. for the 'Hidden files' radio button - I used methods 1 and 2 from here-
http://www.technize.com/2007/05/13/s...s-not-working/

2. for the helpcenter I just reinstalled it as described here -
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rebuildhelp.htm
note that the file 'dataspec.xml' is needed to be available for this, and it can't be done directly from the XP CD. The thing that worked for me was to insert the XP CD, and use the file that in my computer (C:\) and afterwards another file on the CD.

Again, all this happened with no virus detection, so I believe that there is no infection. However, if someone has remarks on the HiJackThis log I've put, feel free to add them.

Have a nice day,

Fitch.

Greetings!

I have an XP machine which I only ever user myself (as in, there are no other users on the machine, no guest account, and it logs in without a password).

I'm trying to sort out my expansive and bloated Start Menu Programs list, but it seems that there are two separate lists. One for "Joe" (the main user account) and one for "all users", I guess because some programs give the option of installing for just one user or for everyone.

All of the programs show up in the Start Menu when I click on it, but when I go into Windows Explorer to try and sort them out, there are two separate folders;

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\Start Menu\Programs

I know I can move them around in these folders (ie; putting them in related groups, such as "system tools" etc), but can I move all of them from the main user to the "all users" folder, (or vice versa) without any problems?

Thanks!
~Joe

I recently noticed that I no longer have a "My Computer" icon or a "My Documents" icon on my desktop. I tried to restore by right clicking on desktop, clicking Properties, clicking Desktop tab, and clicking Customize desktop. The problem is once there, both the my computer and my documents are greyed and can't be selected. I'm clueless as to how they disappeared although I was also missing the calculator and the recycle bin. Fortunately, I've found a way to get those back but I'm at a loss as to resolving the missing my computer and my documents icons.

All help will be most gratefully appreciated.

Do you or anyone else willing to help me, know which registry key I would have to manually delete in order to remove the "Move To" and "Copy To" options from my context-menu?

Please help me solve the problems with my registry. I'm using Windows XP Pro (64-bit Edition). The problems started when I tried opening windows by clicking on folders & files, which are listed on my Start Menu:

Whenever I double-click (or right-click on any folders listed on my Start Menu, and then select "Open" or "Explore") to open files listed on the menu, the "Move To" & "Copy To" windows pop-up.

The "Move To" & "Copy To" windows won't go away, unless I click on "OK" or "Cancel". And now that I have the lastest stable-release of WinRAR installed on my XP, the "Move To" and "Copy To" options aren't listed on my context-menu, anymore. However, I can't open any of the folders I want to access via my Start Menu because my registry is still setup to make the "Move To" and "Copy To" windows appear. And now when I click on "OK" or "Cancel" on each of those windows: none of the folders I wanted to open appear.

Hi. Start menu -> I can only see shut down, or sleep, depending on how it's configured, but to access other power options I have to click on the small white arrow to the right of the power button.

So if the default setting of the big button is shutdown then it's a hassle to choose sleep because I have to click on the oh so small button arrow thing.

There's loads of room at the bottom right of my start menu so please tell me how to have a shutdown button AND a sleep button, because I frequently use both functions and don't want to have to choose only one for quick access. Cheers

HI, first of all, I found out that my home computer was infected by the lovelorn worm. Plan to clean that tonight.

Secondly, I found copies of 2 files named "folder" and "desktop" in almost all folders. The files where identical so I suspect that there is a virus that's propagating this. Is my hunch correct? Is this related to the lovelorn virus or is it another kind? What should I do?

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Hi,
I would like to have my "Documents" folder (not "Personal folder") to show on the right side of the Start menu (I think it is even the default, but at some point I disabled it).

On my other computers I do this by going right-click on the Start menu -> Properties -> Customize -> Documents: Display as menu.

However, it doesn't work and no matter which option I select, the folder is not shown. All the other option work (Downloads, Computer, Music, Personal folder, etc.), just not this one. I did change the My Documents position to D:\My Documents, but everything there seems to be in order (e.g. if I click on My Documents in the Explorer, it does take me to the right path).

I really don't know what else to try - I logged out, restarted, but no change.

Any help would be appreciated!

I just noticed that there is a new (hidden) file in "my documents" folder called "Default". It is a hidden folder and was not there 4 days ago.

When I check the properties on it it simply says that is is just a Remote Desktop Connection type and it was created August 24th, 2008.

My remote desktop and remote assistance features are not active or loaded.

Is this file normal or not?

Thank you!

Apologize in advance for what surely has been asked and answered before, but a quick search of this forum did not give me what I am looking for.

On my desktop are two folders, labeled images and styles, that I do not need to see. What setting must I change to make them disappear from the desktop (without impacting the functioning and appearance of my Windows installation?)

The content of styles is a file named lame.css and a sub-folder CVS with 7 files in it; the content of images is one .gif and two .png files and a sub-folder CVS with 7 files in it.

A:Get rid of "images", "styles" folders on desktop

I have a very strange problem but thought perhaps someone could help. I am running Microsoft XP Professional 64-bit Edition which likely makes my problem even more obscure. Recently when I restarted my computer Windows would get to the desktop, but the taskbar, start menu, and systray would fail to load. What I mean is that the desktop and icons would show (but could not be opened) but the task bar would simply display as a solid blue bar. When you placed the mouse over this solid blue bar the mouse would transform into that hour glass thing. Note: By blue bar I don't mean the standard task bar but rather a two-diminsional bar which was probably the taskbar failing to render.

What I Did and Strange Result:
1. In an effort to save my "My Documents" folder I booted into safe mode (onto the administrator account) and copied the folder to an external harddrive. I then deleted the "My Documents" folder from my normal account.

2. In a last ditch effort I did a normal restart and surprisingly Windows loaded after rebuilding the My Documents folder. I then started copying my files back into the "My Docuements" folder. I then restarted Windows and poof, I was back to Windows not loading properly. I then deleted all the files in the My Documents folder and Windows loaded properly again.

3. I then tried copying a couple files back to My Documents and Windows failed to reload. I thought I might have a virus in a file that was in "My Documents&qu... Read more

I just saw this on a new HP laptop I am working on, it actually makes a kind of Program Menu, so if you don't want a full Start Menu like Windows 7, you can use this to just have links to your Programs:

The HP Quick Start Application (Windows 8) | HP? Support
Installation Causes a reboot so unless you are ready to reboot, don't install it.

It takes a few minutes to populate the Program Links trhe first time it is run, after that it pops up quick and it can be added to Startup Programs.

A:HP's "Quickstart" acts as a "Start Menu"

Looks good.

Yep. It is designed to be a start menu, I've seen it in action. They've made it to add missing start menu functionality back to W8. This is a strategy by HP to accommodate more 'classic' users with the new OS. I think other manufacturers may use similar programs.

"Document" loads normally (1-2 seconds) from Windows Office Taskbar, and "My Documents" in Windows Explorer also loads normally. "My Pictures" does the same. All other programs function as normal. Using AVG Free antivirus-no infections, except 20 or so level 3 cookie/yieldmanagers when loading Internet Explorer/Firefox. No recent changes to the computer. Only 5% of hard drive being used. Spybot/Adaware/AVG run every couple of days. This has been happening for 3 days, tried several previous system restore points--no effect. I use an APC battery backup.

The folder path itself is correct and I've tried creating a new user but that user has the same issue. Hi,

I want the ability to type a keyword into the Start search box and be able to have these Outlook mails automatically included in the search results.

I have a Sony VAIO laptop, 64bit, running Windows 7.

I recently did a factory reset, and prior to the factory reset, the Outlook mails were showing up whenever I did a search from the Start menu.

Now they are not.

How can I make this happen again?

I haven't been able to find any hits on this when searching, although I have to expect it has been brought up before. It is behavior that I used to see in Windows XP, but have definitely noticed it in Windows Vista when running in the XP "classic" view.

I navigate the Start Menu Programs Group list and run a program. Everything is fine. I eventually put my computer in Standby mode. Later, I wake up the computer and go to the Start Menu Programs list again. This time, I may see one or two different behaviors:

The last programs group I accessed is now hidden from view. There is a double arrow at the very end of the programs folder list that when clicked, it shows the programs group that was hidden from view. The whole programs group list is almost completely hidden, except for the last couple of programs groups that I accessed in the last session. Again, the double arrow icon is at the end of the list and when clicked, the whole programs folder list reappears.

I find that this behavior is inconsistent, but most frequently happens after accessing Microsoft Office programs. Unfortunately, because I was familiar with this behavior in Windows XP, I didn't make a mental note of when I first started noticing it in Windows Vista (I've been using it on my laptop for over 3 years). It could be that it wasn't happening initially when I first got my laptop, or I simply didn't pay attention as the frequency was low. But, I've come to notice it more lately and I'... Read more

Is there any way to restore the deleted "programs" folder from the vista start menu? I deleted it because it was just a duplicate of everything already in the start menu.

Now most of the shortcuts from my start menu have disappeared and also I can't access "Administrative Tools" in control panel.

I tried system restore to previous day but didn't work, then tried restoring to a point week back but no luck either.

i tried "Repair" of some of the programs from "Programs & Features" in control panel and they do appeared in start menu but then not all the programs have this "Repair" options in "Programs & Features".

Any help in this regard will be highly appreciated because I tried many forums but didn't get any help to resolve this and hope to get solution here.

I have a "start menu" folder sitting on my vista ho-prem's (SP1 w/x86) desktop and I suspect something's messed up "startup menu" folder locations.

c:\users\steven\appdata\roaming\microsoft\windows\start menu

and http://forums.techguy.org/21-windows-xp/

I did that as such popups can be means to divert our browser either maliciously and/or result in depositing or recording potentially unwanted cookies and/or other undisclosed data onto/from our machines. Besides annoying and suspicious, I find such popups just a bit spam like, likely something none of us appreciate.

It does not minimize all open windows to reveal the Desktop.

Every time i turned on the PC i got a blue screen that said it need to check the files in drive C then it would say deleting files then it said it was recomended to check the consistancy of my computer. It Erased all the files in " my documents" and got rid of all my desk top icons and back ground. It also said that my files were corupted and my login. Is there a way to recover my documents i tried a system restore but no good.

A:Windows erased " my documents "

When you get a corrupted login then you run the risk of losing all files under the "My Documents" tree belonging to that login.

This is why backups are essential, data that is only on the hard drive is data that you don't care about losing.

System restore will not restore user created or downloaded documents, only Windows operating system files.

Data recovery may be available provided that you stop using the PC right now and slave the drive to another PC. However the cause of the problem could be that the hard drive is failing as well, but as we have no clue on what the hardware is (laptop, desktop etc) its hard to offer more advice.

XP Home (installed SP2 recently, which MIGHT have something to do with this?).

Just saved two word docs and a bmp file, all separately. All three times I saw that a new location has been added to the Save As drop-down menu. It didn't open to My Documents folder but was in the general folder list of the whole computer. The location was called "FTP File Locations." It's never appeared on the Save As menu before. This made me think of the file/print sharing control, which is now located in the Windows Firewall, but I don't use that Firewall, I turned it off to use Norton. What was FTP Locations? And is there any way to disable file/print sharing without using the Windows Firewall? (These may be the same thing, I don't know.) Also, in Network Connections, I thought I'd find file/print sharing control there, but now XP wants me to run a whole Network Wizard thing..I'm afraid I'll somehow set up a network instead! or enable all kinds of things..I don't want to create a disaster here.

(My son installed an FTP program months ago for work he was doing, but the program was removed. I just searched for it, it's definitely gone.)

This is a stand-alone, non-networked home computer.

P.S. I saved another Word doc and now it's back to opening to My Documents folder as usual..now I can't find the FTP Locations anywhere.

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

I reformatted my computer recently, with all the same hardware and software I usually do, but this time I noticed something different.

On my E: partition (non-system), there is a folder called "9ca233a934811ecf86022b48e5" which contains two folders: "AMD64" and "i386".

I researched a little bit, and found out those folders pertain to a windows 64-bit edition, but I don't have anything to do with a 64-bit edition, mine's a 32-bit.

Here's my system specs:WinXP Media Center Edition Version 2002 SP3
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6300
3GB RAM
NVidia GeForce 7600 GS 512MB
ST3300831AS 300GB HD
I have my HD partitioned to 3 drives:14GB System Drive (C:)
40GB Document Drive (D:)
190GB Storage Drive (E:)
I also have 40GB partitioned as an Acronis True Image Home Secure Zone, for storing Disk Images.

I was wondering why those two folders are on my E: drive, when I'm running a 32-bit version of Windows. Also, (sorry if this should be in another thread) my computer has been restarting unexpectedly while I've just been doing random things on it. Nothing graphics-intensive, or anything like that, so I don't know why it's doing that either.

Thanks for your help and time,
Nic

A:"AMD64" and "i386" folders on WinXP Media Center 32-bit edition

It sounds like those are temporary files from a driver installation. A lot of companies seem to package every possible driver in the zip or executable, extract them all to the hard drive, find the one the system needs and copy it to the system32 directory, then leave the rest behind.

In that case they should be safe to delete. It would take a bit more research on your part to make sure. Maybe a readme or help file somewhere in the directory?

G'day all,

I am hoping someone may be able to tell me why my local folders appear under "The Internet" on one of our work computers rather than under "Local Network". We have four machines, 3 running XP Home and one running XP Pro. The front machine has XP Home on it and I cannot open any of the shared folders for this machine on any of the other three machines even though they all have the same workgroup name.

They are all connected via CAT5 cable and we have a Netcomm NB5 ADSL2 modem/router, a Netcomm V300 Telephone Adapter(VOIP)/modem and an 8 port switch in the boss's office. And the front computer's folder/s and drives that I have chosen to be shared are listed under "The Internet". Does anyone know why this is and how I would go about correcting it?

Thankyou for your help and time,

Aaron

Many times while surfing on da net and opening some web sites, all of a sudden, I see,
a green square BOX in the lower right corner of the screen showing CPU usage and
filling the box with green color in it,...
and it clogs and blocks the whole activities
and can not even get out of it, or can close any of the application.

What is that? Why it does that?

It means low memory? Low space? or What?

What should be done to avoid it? What should we do when it comes?

All advices needed, please.

Thanks.

I cannot delete one of two anti-virus programs (conflicting) because the "All Programs" with the green arrow does not appear at the bottom of the Start menu.

I do not know how to get it back and I can't get to any of the installed programs...help!

A:Cannot see "All Programs" in the "Start" menu!

If 'run' is available, click on it. In the box type msconfig then press the enter key.
When the program comes up, pick the startp tab. Under that tab is a list of programs
that start when the computer boots. Note the check boxes at the left. Uncheck your virus programs and exit. Reboot and see if you get your programs button back.
To uninstall, you can try using the control panel. In it, pick add/remove programs. There, click on the antivirus program you want to uninstall and tell it to uninstall.
If that don't work, you may have to restart your computer in the Safe Mode and remove it from there.

Hope this helps.

Outlook 2003:I'm a massive fan of outlooks Search folders, I receive in excess of 400 emails per day, of which approximately 250 need my attention, even if to reply back and give someone an answer.

A problem I find is that I am so busy with my emails, I often need to clean out my inbox. I do this by setting up basic search folders such as "all emails from my team which are in my inbox only" or "any email sent to me which was part of a distribution list in my inbox only" etc...

This is great for filtering my mail and I would like to create a rule as such:

"All mail within my inbox which has been either replied to forwarded by myself".

I can't seem to find any options and I'm hoping an Outlook guru can help

If you don't know the answer, can you try googling it for me to see if you can find anything, loads of heads are better one...

For some time now, double clicking on a folder no longer opens it as usual. Instead, double clicking on a folder causes a separate Explorer Search window to open, with that folder's name under the "search in" tab. In fact, when i right click on a folder, the first and bold-faced option is "search", as opposed to "open". So to open any folder I have to right click it and hit open, which is slow and annoying. I cleaned out my registry, spyware, viruses, everything, and still this problem persists. I also checked the Mouse control panel, nothing there.

Anyone know what's going on with my computer?

Hi. I'm thinking about repairing Windows 7Home Premium 32bit with the DVD, because of BSOD, but I hesitate.

I first need to know if the backup folder called "Windows.old" will be a COPY (keeps Date Modified but updates Date Created) or a CUT (simply moves all folders to an other, thus doesn't change Date Created). Thanks!
So of course, only those who have ever reinstalled Windows 7 may know the answer. If you don't know but have reinstalled Windows 7 at least once, please spare 30 seconds to check, simply find a file like a picture or music that you had before the reinstall, and see in the bottom bar of explorer if its Date Created is the original or the reinstall date. You can also click Display tab in Explorer, then Sort by > Others > check "Date Created", > OK > Click display again > Sort by > Date Created. Don't mistake with Date Modified, I know the original Date Modified is kept upon copying, but it will update if you modify the file obviously. Please be honest and double check, losing 5.9 years old dates of my past would be heartbreaking, like mixing the pages of my diary!

Date Created is very important to me (and is underrated because it's not the default sorting option unlike Name/Type/Date Modified) because my computer is 5.9 years old, now has thousands of files and folders and it's easy to find them back and organize them with Date Created sorting if I didn't write tags or description in the file name.

Not a major issue, of course, purely cosmetic, but still a minor annoyance none-the-less:

I have a number of card reader drives that I never use (haven't even removed that plastic cover tape from them to help keep the dust out) that show when viewing the "Computer" window that displays drives. Is there any way to hide specific unused drivers from this view? Not remove drive entirely, of course, I may need to use one in the future, but just to hide them so they aren't visible, until I may chose to make them visible again?

Thanks as always,

Russell

You could check Hide empty drives in the Computer folder in Folder Options to have them stay hidden until you insert a card. When a card is inserted, the drive will display in Computer.

Ok where do I begin?! I have been dealing with viruses, spyware/malware for the past week. It all started with Norton advising me that I had been infected with Trojan. Vundo and Trojan.Zonebac. After that I started receiving many different pop ups warning me about critical system alerts. I also had an annoying yellow triangle at the bottom of my screen warning me about different trojans and worms. More evil friends included 2 new icons that had made their home on my desktop one named "Live Safety Center" and the other "Online Security Guide", also installed was a new toolbar named "Security Toolbar 7.1". I have scanned my computer with many different programs and have somehow finally managed to get rid of the pop ups and toolbar, although I know I'm probably still infected somewhere. I'm sorry this is so long but, I wanted to explain EVERYTHING! I'm running Windows XP SP2, and have followed all steps to post. I downloaded DSS, but after many attempts to run, it just wouldn't let me. I do have a fresh hijackthis log and my Panda report, I hope this is good enough.

Hey folks,

My first post on here but I'm in serious trouble. I got a "new" (to me anyway) desktop running XP today and found the audio hardware wasn't working. So I pillaged an old machine for its sound card, and inserted that onto the motherboard. Also connected the Aux and CD lines to the top of the daughterboard.

Since then, to my horror, the machine has failed to boot. All plugged in, keyboard working, screen on and being used on another box for this very post. All I get now is the usual chirps from the internal soundcard followed by a few very low notes, definitely depressing so I guess they're suggesting something's failed. There's no further action from the CPU, the fan still works, but there is no screen output whatever.

Have I fried the motherboard without realising?!

Also, ironically, the last failure tone was delivered by my speakers through the originally non-responsive audio hardware!

I'd love a bit of help on this one, because my knowledge of computers' insidey bits is pretty poor.

Many thanks,

Joe.

Hi all

Ill cut to the chase.

What I am asking is someway of turning the Entire Windows Desktop/Screen "Black and White" not simply High Contrast.

I am one of those unfortunate ones, like many, that suffer from quite severe migraines from time to time. Couple this with frequent headaches, sometimes daily. This obviously isnt helped by the fact that my hobby and career are both in IT. I have tried every possible solution to alleviate the headaches. Lay off certain foods, make sure to have a balanced diet. Turn off any strong lighting around my computer screen, remove any strong colours from the desktop etc......

Windows XP / Vista have tried to address this issue with the accessibility wizard, where you can select the High Contrast Options to take any strong colours off the screen. Unfortunately this still doesnt get rid of everything.

When you make any major changes or "logoff" in XP/Vista, the screen fades to "black and white" for a short period. If you know what I am on about, thats the effect I am after.

More than likely a black and white layer is laid over the desktop to create this effect, unfortunately you would not be able to access anything underneath.

I need a fully functional XP machine in complete black and white.

On old CRT monitors you were able to remove the colour, making the screen B&W, but with alot of LCD screens this function is not available.

If anyone has any ideas, you would be helping so many people.

Usually when the machine has a "blank" desktop, the boot/startup process has been interupted or is frozen to before Explorer is launched.

You can launch Explorer manually be navigating C:\Windows and double-clicking "Explorer".

If successful, do the following:

Start>Run>(type) "msconfig" and turn off all non-MS services and all startups.

Then, Start>Run>(type) "cmd", and at the command prompt type "chkdsk /f" and schedule a chkdsk to run on next reboot.

Reboot system and report results.

I have tried to share a folder, and in the dialog where I can choose which users to share to, I select myself and click "Add", but Vista responds "Unable to locate user". Now, the user was in the list and is correctly spelled, so something strange is going on here.

The network is private, and the only thing connected is a WDTV Live (media player), via a router.
In Network and Sharing Center, network discovery is on, file sharing is on, public folder sharing is on, printer sharing is on, password protected sharing is off, and media sharing is on.

I am a 30 year IT pro, most of it as a programmer. I am the geek in charge of a tech non profit org in Hawaii. www.HawaiianHope.org
so yea.. i have at least half a clue.

Here is the deal.
In doing drive copies, data recoveries, etc... when we are moving a mass amount of data from one drive to another we run into this problem a lot.
"Error moving file or folder" -- "directory is not empty"
If you restart the move, it will continue on and keep going, restart enough times and eventually it will move all directories.

I think its a programming issue with windows and wonder if anyone has a work around ?

I have a suspicion that the copy process is getting out of sequence. That it is trying to move a folder before it actually emptied it. Possibilities are :
1) windows forgot its place in moving through and navigating numerous sub directories and it is having a problem with “recursive calls.”
2) Computers with hyper threading or dual core processors are spawning the movement of files across multiple processes, and some are getting ahead of the other.
3) It did actually move the file, but the cache or something in memory has not updated, or the full data write has not completed yet before it tried to move the directory. (delayed write)
Yes, you can copy and then delete the old... Read more

A:"Error moving file or folder" -- "directory is not empty"

This is a known issue. It is by design.

As you may know, moving is in its essence an unsafe process. It would be better to use the actual sequence of copy and then delete.

problem is, when i search for "mai" it brings up Windows Mail, and I can hit
enter and load the program. However, when I search for "mail", it returns:
"No items match your search." I have it set to index both the start menu and
my programs directory, and have even tried to rebuild the index.

It seems kind of strange that Vista would recognize that when I type "mai" I
want my mail programs, but when I actually type "mail", it gets confused...
and this in turn has -me- confused.

Oh thank goodness, I've finally found someone else with the same problem.
The word I have issues with is "photo" ("phot" works great, but no results
for "photo"). Not a show-stopper, but WHY!?

I've noticed the same thing with Windows Desktop Search in Windows 7. After some experimenting I think I have the reason why, but not a fix.

It seems to em that mail and photo are probably used as "kind =" prefixes in Windows search, and even if you enter photo with out ... Read more

I right clicked on the Taskbar and checked Quick Launch and hit the Apply button. This put the Quick Launch toolbar on the Taskbar with the Show Desktop and Internet Explorer icons. I deleted them and now I can't duplicate this action. I can get the Internet Explorer icon back. But I can't get the Show Desktop icon back.

Does anyone know how to get the Show Desktop icon back on the Quick Launch toolbar.

Thanks,

royeo

A:How to get the "Show Desktop" icon back the "Quick Launch" toolbar

Go here http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm and go down to where it says 'Restore Show Desktop Icon'. Download the exe and run it.

Greetings.
So, I would like to remove "Paste shortcut" and "Undo delete" from the right-click desktop menu.
Wasn't able to locate either in the registry.

I think I am infected with Malware, Spyware, or some type of virus. My desktop background has become a bright red screen with a toxic symbol on it and underneath it, it says "Your Privacy Is In Danger!" On the bottom right, in the taskbar, right next to the time and date, it says "Virus Alert!" My computer is also attempting to run anti-Spyware programs all by itself, opening browsers with websites to Spy programs and pop-ups warning me of possible hackers. Below is my HJT log:

If I open "My Computer" and then I double click on the C: drive icon (or any drive), it opens up a new window with the Search panel on the left. If I right click on a drive, the menu comes up and "Search" is the in bold, indicating it is the default. How can I change this so it is no longer the default, but opening it up with "Open" as the default?

A:Explorer Window defaults to "Search" instead of "Folders"

Start> Run> type: regsvr32 /i shell32.dll then hit OK.
If that doesn't work, try this script repair from Doug Knox.

Rightclick the menu bar & choose "Customize" (sic) from the pop-up.

With the "Commands" tab uppermost, click on "Insert" under "Categories".
