recent places folder

Q: recent places folder

Hi,

I think someone copied a file from my laptop onto their USB stick while I was at work. I got home and started to work on the file, then when I pressed save it said 'cannot find location, please insert removable storage device into drive d' (or something like that) so I 'saved as' in another location, then checked my 'recent places' folder. Sure enough there was evidence of a removable disk being modified on my laptop whilst I was at work. I confided this to my house mate, checked my laptop again later that night and it had been deleted from the recent places folder. I now want to confront that person about what happened as it is now obvious to me that they had copied my file, but wondered if there's any way I can get the evidence back. I have tried the undo button, but to no avail. This happened on Tuesday (8th). Can anybody help me?

Thanks

How did you access it in the first place? if it was moved you wouldn't have been able to opened it.

But it does seem fishy though that it would disappear like that. Check the recycling bin for the file. There are some 'undelete' programs but the data may have already been removed.

Hi, I hope this is in the right place.

If I click on Recent Places on the left hand menu of windows explorer (File Explorer) the folder is always empty.

Can anyone please shed some light on this? It's doing my head in.

ETA - When I right click on taskbar and go to properties, both items are already checked under the Jump Lists tab.

Thanks much in advance.

Right click on the taskbar and look at properties.
In the Jump lists tab check the display recent items in jump lists box.

I recently was having trouble with my userprofile. At first I couldnt log in and then i was able to finally log in but it was a blank temporary profile. I fixed it using profiler and all my files are back. However the computer is doing two strange things it is no longer keeping track of recent places(i have the option checked so it does) and no longer maintaing settings when viewing pictures in windows explorer(ex. viewing by date modified or viewing with a specific program like windows viewer). The minute i close the folder it goes back to a default setting. Please help.

A:recent places folder is always empty.

Another long-standing known issue with Windows. Usually caused by a registry error. I don't normally advocate making registry changes, but this is one of those instances where it's largely unavoidable. See if this helps:
http://www.sysprobs.com/fix-temporary-profile-windows-7
I should add that fixing your profile problem is the answer. You probably won't get the computer to behave properly until you've corrected the problems in the registry.

This is on my mom's laptop. It has a fresh Win 7 install on it about four or five months old. It has very little 3rd party software installed on it. Avast, Office 2007, Firefox, Irfanview, and her HP printer/scanner driver are about all I can think of.

A couple of weeks ago she created a new folder one level below her "Documents" library (ex. Documents\Projects\Foo) for a project she's working on. It consists mainly of a couple of Word documents and 150 or so photographs. She had me looking at something tangentially related that turned out to be user error.

But, while looking at that, I noticed something very odd. When navigating to this new work folder in Explorer via the Documents library shortcut in the Navigation Pane, or, when drilling down through the C: drive in the pane, her Foo folder is not visible. But, it shows up in Recent Places.

When entering the Foo folder from Recent Places and then clicking on Projects in the Address Bar to navigate up to the Projects folder, the Foo folder is visible. But, when I navigate to that same Projects folder any other way, I don't see Foo.

I do see all of the other files in the Projects folder. To double-check that I was looking at the same Projects folder I dragged a file to make a copy and then looked at the folder from both directions. That copy showed up both times. So, it's the same Projects folder.

I can't figure out how this is even possible. It should either be always visible or never visible. I ... Read more

Hi - first-time poster looking for help (Googling did not turn up the answer):

I have numerous clients whose info I keep in folders / subfolders with a set naming convention. As a result, my Recent Places list shows many (sub)folders all with the same name, which isn't very helpful. Is there a way I can include the path to the folders in the Recent Place list to differentiate them? It would greatly increase my productivity! (BTW, I've tried using the folder columns available by right-clicking on the column names in Recent Places - both Folder path and Path return only C:\Users\[username]\App_Data\Roaming... (i.e. the location of the shortcut) vs. the actual path to the true folder).

Thanks!

Did you ever discover a solution? It's definitely a problem not knowing where a Recent Places shortcut refers to.

I'm Running Windows 7 64 bit, Home Premium, fully updated.

On my laptop (64 bit Windows 7), "Recent Items" works properly, showing all docs I've opened only (no folders, as it should be). The taskbar Jumplists for each program also show recent docs opened in that program.

The "Recent Places" folder, however, is always empty, nor do recent folders show on the Jumplists for folders.

Searching has turned up nothing useful, but tells me I'm not the only one with this issue.

What I've tried already:sfc /scannow
making sure both the "Store and display" options in Taskbar and Start Menu Properties are checked.
making sure the reg key HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\Recent points to the correct folder (%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent Items) and that the folder itself is actually named "Recent Items" and not just "Recent"
running a disk scan
Safe mode
Essentially, it seems that documents opened are recorded but not folders. I'm stumped at this point. Anyone know what's up with this?

I have searched everywhere on the Internet, including Microsoft Support and Community, for a solution to this problem. I am looking for a way to clear the Recent Places list. I can clear Recent Items. In fact, almost all of the solutions for clearing Recent Places that a search turns up actually clears Items. But nothing does a mass clearing of Places.

I can right-click on the Recent Places icon in my task bar and the right-click on any single place, then delete that. But then the next visited place just scrolls up into view. Nowhere can I find an option for clearing all recent places in the list. I have tried searching for Recent places in the Start Menu, in the Explorer Location Bar and elsewhere, but every option that eventually comes up applies only to Recent Items.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks...

today I realised that I had a recent places icon on my desktop. I tried right clicking it to delete but there's no option to do so. I'm a bit anal about what's on my desktop so I would love some help in removing it

A:recent places on desktop

Question, do you still see "recent places" in the windows explorer under "favorites"?

If you do still see it there, it could be that at some point you tried to manually clear the recent places history by clicking into it and deleting the entries. Doing this can sometimes cause the desktop recycle bin icon to change to the name+icon of recent places. To resolve that, right click the desktop, choose personalize, then change desktop icons and un-tick "recycle bin", click OK. Then click change desktop icons once again and put a tick back in recycle bin and click OK. Recent places will be gone from the desktop and the recycle bin will be back.

If you do not see recent places in the windows explorer window, drag it back under the "favorites" area and you should be able to remove the duplicate after doing this.

Something has changed on my system and messed up the Recent Places dialog. It was working fine and very useful.

Now though, for example in these 2 applications, the Recent Places link shows, I click and get a list of folders but when I select one I get an error message box

Expression Web 2
File open, then Recent Places, gives a list of folder but if I select one it tries to open it (as a document?)
eg.
cannot open C:\users\me\Documents\blah\folder.

Word 2007 says
The directory name is not valid.
C:\users\me\Documents\blah\folder\

Office 2007
Attach a file, select recent places. Fine, get a list of recent places. Click on a folder and get a pop up saying:

Cannot find this file. Verify the path and file names are correct.

It's as though vista has forgotten these are folders or something?

any thoughts?

I've installed Windows 7 from a store bought DVD, and been using it on a brand new built PC for 2 weeks now. One thing that I don't understand and have gone crazy trying to figure out is, what exactly is RECENT PLACES on the EXPLORER.EXE (Computer, aka My Computer) window? You know, that link over in the left hand column of Explorer.exe underneath the "Desktop" and "Downloads" links?

I have clicked RECENT PLACES for the past 2 weeks, and never once has anything shown up in the resulting window. Yet I've downloaded probably a hundred files using Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera during this time. I have navigated to dozens and dozens of local area networked computers and various folders on those network "neighbors", and still, navigating to folders, drives, computer, URLs, and even saving files in Word, Notepad, etc....NONE of this ever results in a single item in the RECENT PLACES window.

So riddle me this Batman, how does this RECENT PLACES thingy work? It surely is not obvious to this individual.

Thanks.

A:how to clear recent places automatically

Hello saravanan,
I gather you mean "Recent Items" located on the right side of the Start menu by default.
If you find it so annoying to have to right click to "clear recent items list" there is an alternative. It [ Recent items ] can be removed if desired & restored again if needed.
Please confirm that "Recent Items" is indeed what you mean.

Hello Everyone

Until a short while ago my "recent places" was working fine showing all recent folders opened. Following some changes on the exchange mailbox - in principle not related to windows - all of a sudden my recent places is empty.

More worrying it is no longer "populated" as I use new files in new folders.

I've checked that the two boxes for "recent items" and "Recent programs" are checked in the start bar configuration). But is a directory a "recent item"?

"Recently Changed" link is still working on the other hand.

Can someone help?

Just adding some additional information on the previous post :
- I tried creating a new user and problem appears to be the same
- Also tried to do a system restore but for some reasons all the restore points I used came back with a failure message (something around "Cannot access a file") even when Norton AV was de-activated.

I would welcome any solution avoiding an install and repair.

This issue seems to occur with only 1 user profile. The one I happen to use the most, my main one.

I've tried to resolve this on my own but the hours I put forward to fix this have been in vain...

However in that time I managed to find out a great deal of information and locate that the issue is only occuring on my main user account.

I've edited in Regedit for recent to be changed to Recent Items for all user accounts and I've rebuild the search index to also include the recent items folder. It does take sometime for it to be fully rebuild at 40 000 items but hey I don't think this is matters for my issue to be fixed from.

This however is all in vain for fixing the Recent Places folder.

I tested it out on my other user accounts and there it seems to work.

The test:

I open a file in paint located on an other drive or in downloads and save it as a new file and put it in the same location. The result should be that the downloads folder appears in Recent Places. This does not occur for me with my main profile. HOWEVER If I open, save or save as etc... it does show up in recent items but never in Recent Places regardless what action I take on files.

A question: Why is there a recent items and recent places? Why not just one type of folder to group all shortcuts under? Why have both types? Maybe you guys got one? I got two it seems..

I'm really clueless and a system restore won't work because this issue been bugging me for ages.

I think it all started when I hit "c... Read more

A:How to fix recent PLACES for a user account? Ive given up on my own :(

Hey Max,

"Recent items" displays a list of recently opened folders and files. The items on the list point to their original folders, so these are basically just a list of shortcuts.

Deleting individual files on this list will not delete the original files. It's like deleting a shortcut.

If you delete any file on the Recent items list ** from its original location **, it will still show up on the recent list, but the operating system will indicate that it has been deleted, and can be recovered from the Recycle Bin (as long as it wasn't permanently deleted)

If you move any file on the Recent items list ** from its original location ** to another location, the pointer will also change, but the recent item list will not change. To find out the original location of a file, right click the file (on the recent item list) and select "Properties", or select "Open file location".

"Recent Places" displays a list of recently (or regularly) used folders. They are NOT treated as shortcuts. If you delete the folders in "Recent Places", it'll also delete the source folder.

Hello

Recently, when right clicking on the explorer icon in my task bar I noticed that all of my pinned folders and recent places had disappeared. I looked in my recent places folder and found that that was empty.

I also realized that other programs had lost their extra jump list options, for example Skype, which when right clicked should give the option to quit Skype, but instead only had the basic 'close window' and 'unpin' options.
The Skype jump list reappears once I restart Skype, however the explorer jump list is still missing when I restart my PC or explorer.exe

I have tried deleting the files in C:\Users\%USER%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations.
Then when I restart explorer.exe and pin things to my explorer task bar icon, everything is fine...

Until a little while later (for reasons I cannot explain) the jump lists disappear, even though their files in \AutomaticDestinations still exist!

This is really bugging me, as I often use jump lists to quickly navigate to different areas on my PC. If anyone could shed some light on the problem for me, that would be great!

ps: If the above explanation was a bit confusing, please tell me and I'll try to rephrase it and explain it better

Much as I like Windows 10 (despite an unnecessarily difficult installation), I'm horrified to find that they have apparently abandoned the 'Favorites' and 'Recent places' folders - which I used constantly and had grown to love.
Are they hiding them somewhere? Is there a way to restore/find them? Have I missed something obvious?

Hi, how do I add to the left of windows dialog boxes 'recent items'? I know how to activate recent items in the start menu and I know what recent places is about but neither gives links to recent _items_ i.e. files in dialog boxes.

For e.g. you want to attach a file you have just worked on to an email in outlook. You click the paperclip icon and you get the dialog box. You click on recent places and all you get are the folders you have recently opened and saved to. If the folder is not there or you're not sure in which folder the file is in it does not help you find the file.

Many thanks

A:How to find recent items (NOT places) in dialog boxes

Just playing around. I'm on Vista Home Premium 64 bit SP1 at the moment. I went into Start Menu and right clicked on Recent Items. Then I went to Send To and chose Desktop. Now I had a shortcut on the desktop. I dragged it onto a File Open dialog and renamed it Recent Items. Then I deleted the shortcut on the Desktop. I'l have to watch it for awhile to see if it get updated.

Might be worth a try.

edit: seems to be working. I opened a text file and then looked in File Open and File Save As dialogs. Recent Items is there and that text file is listed. I'm glad you asked. I may want to use this myself.

edit2: I just did the same thing in W7 32 bit. If it doesn't show Recent Items in the Start Menu panel, right click TaskBar, select Properties, then Start Menu, then Customize. Once it shows in the Start Menu panel then you can do the SendTo Desktop trick.

I have the same question as rdwharley posted 3/Dec/09, but never answered.
In gmail when attaching file the pop up is entitled "select file(s) to upload by mail.google.com"
which list some locations including "recent places", but recent places is not sorted by date, which would seem the obvious choice, and is how it shows up in Windows7. The pop up doesn't include "recently changed" which would be even better.

Thanks for any help,

Mark

A:Google Mail Recent Places Attaching Document

I don't get the exact wording you do.
When you click to compose an email, right on the email, it says
"Attach a file."

When you click that you get a window showing your folders from
your hard drive.

There is no "select file(s) to upload by mail.google.com"

It simply opens a window and which has a title saying "choose
file to upload." You can sort them anyway you want at this
point in time - they normally appear just as they would if you
opened Windows Explorer.

It is up to you to navigate to where the file is located.

For the benefit of others that might respond, here is the link
for rdwharley. Maybe you can understand what blaksley is
talking about better than I can.

Hello All!

Would need your help with this...

Windows 7 "Recent Places" stopped recording the most recently visited files. I have presently no idea what triggered this issue.

Please review the attached screenshot displaying the properties of the "Recent Places" folder. Maybe that will give you a hint.

I need your help!

Thank you!

I was hoping to be able to change the default icon for "My Videos" folder. I have renamed it to "Downloads" to use as my download folder. I was hoping to be able to do this without creating a desktop.ini file. I'm hoping it's a registry entry, or failing that, I could change the icon in the dll, but a registry entry would be a lot easier.

Also, the "Recent" folder is never used, and I'd like to hide it from the user\recent list.

I included a picture to make it easier to understand what I'm talking about. I edited out the user name for privacy reasons.

Hello all,
I hope you can help me with my problem, I searched to no avail.
I use 'Recent Places' a lot in my work, you know when opening and saving files in photoshop or other apps, I use Recent Places to go to the folders I'm working on quickly.
Recently I noticed that Recent Places is not being updated with those folders anymore so I cleared the list hoping it will start working again, unfortunately it hasn't. It's still empty.
I have the two options enabled under Privacy in the Start Menu properties.
It's weird.
Please someone help.
Thankyou kindly.

I have Windows 7 64-bit installed. I am frustrated that when using windows explorer, "recent places" is always empty--meaning that I have to always re-navigate through the entire file structure in order to find the folder I want. In spite of other problems I had when using Vista, this was one thing that always worked and that I found extremely helpful and efficient. Why does it not work in Windows 7, even though the tool is included in the options list? It's _always_ empty. I have tried looking through various fora for a fix for this, but without success. Help! There MUST be a way to make this work! Thanks much.

You might see how it'll work by creating a shortcut of the folder with a name you want, save the shortcut to where you want to keep it at, then use the shortcut's path in the places bar to see if it will display the shortcut name instead of folder name.

Here?s a very bizarre one:
I?m using the Customize features in the Folder Properties in Windows 7. I have a whole lot of images of old cars arranged in folders by manufacturer. Each folder image is the manufacturer?s logo, which looks very cool. All very well and good. But now once in a while when I make a new folder, rename it, or sometimes just move it, one of those images will show up on the icon of the new folder! It can be any of them at random. Mind you, the image isn?t in the folder itself, it?s getting it from somewhere else. I can make it go away by using the Restore Default button, but it?s very annoying. Is a bug? What?s going on?

If I understand it correctly, the folder icons show the two most recently modified images as part of their thumbnails.

The easiest way to get around this is to take you favourite picture and save it as "folder.jpg"

1) The "Normal" thumbnail view of a folder:

2) Make a copy of the image you want to use, and rename it to "folder"

3) The thumbnail view of a folder containing an image named "folder.jpg"

Hello, i have this little issue. I use a custom made software which writes logs to certain directory. The logs are not needed for the software to work, however neither I or someone else can modify the software, but i would like to prevent it from creating logs. The logs are made in .txt . Oh and software/machine are/must be running with admin privileges (UAC is disabled).
I tried locking the folder with cacls foldertolock /e /p everyone:n , after doing this i cannot access it via explorer, but the logs keep getting saved in that folder.
I also tried adding +r attribute to the folder, but it didn't affect it in any way.

Any other things i could try? I would prefer that this could be made remotely via cmd/registry/whatever.

First, all of this is new. I've used Vista Ultimate flawlessly for a long time, nothing new has happened (no new programs) I swear this just showed up. I know people say that all the time, but really, I'm not computer illiterate and really, I didnt' change anything. I promise.

So, I keep my desktop clear and use the Desktop Shortcut toolbar (lower right hand, next to the notification area) to navigate to my programs. For as long as I can remember, when I click down there, I would see TWO shortcuts, the ONLY ONES on my desktop: 1. Shortcuts (I made this one, takes me to my shortcuts folder, where I put.. all my shortcuts), and 2. Recycle Bin.

Now, when I click down there, I see this:

Public

Network
The Internet (IE logo... I use Firefox)
Control Panel.

Ok, you say, no problem, just go to Personalize>Change Desktop Icons and unclick all of those. But wait.. they aren't clicked there. They aren't. So I have links in my desktop toolbar that ARE NOT on my desktop. If I right click them in my desktop toolbar and select Delete, they do delete, but if I then click on the desktop toolbar again, they are back again. My Recent Folder (AppData-Roaming-Microsoft-Windows-Recent) only shows things up to 4 days ago. Is there anyone I can look further back a week or so?

Thanks

A:Recent Folder question

I could be wrong, but Recent Items only has room for a limited number of items, and most of us exceed that number every few days. So I think that the number of items that are shown in the Recent Items list is not determined by how many days back the list goes, but how many files or folders we've opened. In other words, it doesn't work like the History folder that shows every site gone to within a certain period of time.

Go back the registry and follow the same string to where you found "NoRecentDocs..." now scroll up to where you see "MaxRecent Docs" and change the value from "1" to "0"
This stops the deleting of the recent docs folder. The other answers under this topic are of value also. Anti-spyware, anti-spam and anti-virus programs can be changing the registry value or deleting docs directly.

I've come accross an unusual problem that I've never seen before.
I'm on windows 7 home premium 64 bit.

I have a Library called "work". Its actually located in my documents folder.

In this folder I have \Work\Discs\ubuntu. As you may have guessed I work with linux on occasion.
I wanted to create a new folder here but the new folder button was missing from the toolbar and the context menu.
I can create a new folders elsewhere just not here.

I thought as an easy workround I would create a new folder in the parent directory and simply move it. I created it in \work\discs and then moved it into "ununtu" only to find it wasnt there.
If I navigate to the real location of this folder the new folder is there ok.

Then I thought if this folder is playing up I will create a new one and just delete this one so I created \work\discs\ubuntu2 and moved all of the contents of ubuntu to here.
So far so good.
I then created 3 new folders here "1004" "1010" and "1104" I then moved all the files from ubuntu into these folders.

To be clear now \work\disc\ubuntu2 should now contain 3 folders and no files.
I then deleted ubuntu and renamed ubuntu2 --> ubuntu.
I then double clicked on the new "ubuntu " folder expecting to see 3 folders yet I see the contents as it was before I started. If I call it anything other than ubuntu I see the contents fine but if I name it ubuntu it reverts to its old state.

Any Ideas whats causing this.

Right click on the empty area of Start Menu, choose Properties, at bottom change the "Number of Recent Items to Display in Jump Lists" up to maximum 60.

On my installs I also set Downloads as a link, Computer and Control Panel as a Menu.

Why is it that when there are a number of same size, same type, same extension files on the same page I want to save to a single folder each "save as" I perform prompts me with a different location instead of remembering the last folder saved to? This is my experience when using Firefox.

On the other hand, while using IE (limited experience) it seems to remember the last saved-to location as long as it's within the same browser session AND same tab. If an image is opened in a new tab (or session) it automatically switches the save-to to the default "Pictures" folder.

I'm assuming since both browsers now act differently than they did with previous OS's (XP and lesser) it must be something inherent in Win7's architecture. Is there any way of changing this annoying behavior without resorting to 3rd party download managers?

Searching this question I was only able to locate a couple Microsoft threads with frustrated and, as yet, unsatisfied users.

A:"Save as" default (most recent) folder always changes

Firefox remembers per site where files were stored, and should save files to that same location by default. If you download a file from http://xyz.com then the next time you download from that site, it should remember where the last file downloaded from that site was saved.

Make sure you don't have FF set to not remember history

Tools> Options> Privacy> History

It should be set to Remember History if you want FF to remember last d/l location.

If you don't want FF to remember history, you might try to add an about:config setting to restore that behavior

Firefox Save Image As Save Per Site Annoyance

In your case, you would want FF to remember per site (true (default) - The last used directory for the website (host) serving the file for download will be preselected in the file picker. If no download directory for the current website has been stored, browser.download.lastDir will be used.)

You could also create a new profile and see if the behavior exists there (assuming you do have Remember History already selected)

I want to restore some program files form a windows backup. As far as I know Windows had made these on a regular basis. On my pc I have  a folders named Backup Set 2016-03-08 144041. This contains folders named Backup Files 2016-03-08 144041 and Catalogs.
Backup Files 2016-03-08 144041 contains literally hundreds of zip files which seems to contain backup data.

But if I try to restore files using the Windows BackUp Function the most recent backup that I can find appears to date from November 2015. Does this mean that no more recent backup exists? But then what is the function of this Backup Set  folder? Is
there any possibility to restore data from a backup more recent than November?

I found that on the C:\Users\user1\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent folder, there are also the recent folder locations (aside from the recent files). Is there a way to display these recent locations as well?

This could be helpful in cases where I suddenly closed a windows explorer, and I need to re-open it quickly.

Thanks.

A:How to display recent folders in recent items

I don't know if this will get you what you want, but a right-click on the WindowsExplorer taskbar icon (if you have it pinned there) will at least show frequent locations...
Also the address bar in WindowsExplorer has some sense of history...

Suddenly the Recent Items list accessible from the Start menu is showing the first 15 items in some large alphabetical list of items accessed in the past. Previously it had been showing the most recent (I'm sure) 10 (I think) in alphabetical order, which is the way I understand it's intended to work.

Now, for example, if I empty the list and then access 16 files beginning with the first 16 letters of the alphabet, in order, the 16th doesn't show up at all, even though it was the one most recently accessed. When I look in \Users\{user name}\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent, the entries are sorted by date in descending order, so that the file beginning with the 16th letter is at the top, even though it doesn't even appear in the Start menu Recent Items list.

I first noticed this problem after I found a PC Magazine article on the best free software, downloaded a bunch, and installed three: BinaryFortress fileseek, IObit Uninstaller, and SlimWare SlimCleaner. I expect that one of them made some subtle registry tweak which I have to change back. I'm least suspicious of fileseek, and most suspicious of SlimCleaner. My hunch is based on the degree of utility function each is alleged to have.

Any ideas?

Thank you.

Today I updated my Nvidia driver and rebooted my machine. Everything seemed to go well. I did not receive any errors.

When I opened my start menu I noticed that some programs that I almost never use anymore were my only recent programs. I then opened a program that use often that was not listed. I then opened a file and then closed the program. Even though there was room on the recent programs area the application was not showing up.

After some searching around I saw people talk about their two check boxes on the privacy section of the start menu options being grayed out. I checked mine and they we checked and were enabled. Other forum posts said to uncheck them restart and the re-check them. I did this but to no avail. I was deciding to just live with it as pinning to the start menu still works.

I started pinning my most important apps and opening a file to make sure that the recent files jump menu was showing up. It works for all applications except Microsoft applications. I added MS Excel to my pinned list and opened a recent file (that shows up in the apps recent files section) then saved it and closed Excel. When I opened my start menu again Excel still lacks a jump menu for recent apps.

Any help on this will be appreciated.

My friend (we'll call him David) created for some sick and twisted purpose a folder path that contained 107 (no joke) folders within folders, something in the order of, "C:\folder\folder\folder\folder\..." David is now unable to delete the folder directory. When he tried to delete it, it says "Are you sure you want to move the folder and all its contents to the recycle bin? (yes, yes to all, or no)." He clicks "yes to all" or "yes", and it says, "The folder contains items who's name is too long for the recycle bin. Do you want to permanently delete it?" He clicks "yes" or "yes to all" again and it says, "Cannot delete z: Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path and filename."

Anyhow, does anybody know how to delete this file? Any assistance would be greatly apreciated.

I have a simple problem. Is it possible to run my mic in two places? for example. I want my mic to be picked up by Virtual Audio Cable as well as in Skype. but if im running one, the mic doesnt seem to be picked up by the other? if it helps, i put my VAC setup below

Virtual Cable Setup:
Line 1 > Line 2
Mic > Line 2 (this is the one that isnt working if im using skype and visa versa)
Line 1 > Speakers

A:How can i use mic in two places?

From my experience, microphones are assigned to one program alone and you are not able to use it in "two places." But I may be wrong, so try doing some research on Google as well as waiting for more people to post a response.

Hello
Please see my attachment and let me know if this is the way it should appear if I have a desktop and a laptop, hopefully on the same private network. In Win 7 the name only appeared once.
If it is wrong could you please tell e how to correct it?
Thank you

A:name on 2 places

If you are just using the same connection for the two of them then only ONE network connection should show up.

First, please forgive me if I have overlooked this issue in the many searches I have performed thus far.

I would like to know if anyone has a way to change all folder icons within a single folder to one specific icon without performing each one individually. I have over 1,400 folders within a master folder of which I would like to change the child folder icons. I really don't wish to perform this on a folder-by-folder basis.
This is not a Default Folder Icon Change inquiry. This is simply all child folders within a single master folder. I would also be interested if the change would affect all folders of a specific type. Windows 7 does allow the 'setup' of a folder to be distributed (details view with selected details, order, and column size for example) but the icon did not distribute as well.

Any suggestions?

A:Bulk Change All Folder Icons in Single Folder or Folder Type

First, a little bit of theory. What happens when a person sets a custom icon for a folder in Windows 7?
1. Attributes of a Folder change to Read-only (of the folder, NOT content!).
2. A hidden system file created inside that folder, which contains a link to the icon.

Thus, having such file as model, it is possible simply copy it across desired folders, and change attributes of those folders correspondingly.

Secondly, having this idea in my mind, I have put all of my little knowledge of Batch files together and created a script.
BEFORE script is started the following is needed to be done:
Master folder needs to be selected and a custom icon applied to it.

ONLY AFTER THAT
1. Script is placed inside that master folder and launched.
2. First, script checks if hidden system file with custom icon settings is there.
3. Secondly, script looks for subfolders and start changing its attributes.
4. Thirdly, script copies this settings file to all subfolders of current master folder, including all levels of subfolders.

For 100 folders it took about 21 seconds, for 200 folders with different levels of subfolders it took about 57 seconds on my laptop.

I have included remarks (comments) in the source code for better understanding what is going on.

UPDATE: Original file deleted. Script was not meant to be applied to system folders.
Please check a newer FIXED version at this post.
