Hard drives with unknown folders that contains random Numbers & Letters

Q: Hard drives with unknown folders that contains random Numbers & Letters

I saw an old post about this. Question is, I have a C: drive and D: which D: is for data. Windows keeps adding all these folders on the Data drive. Is there a way to tell Windows to place these on C: somewhere?

The old post also mentioned these are temp files and can be deleted. Good luck with that. Most of these no matter how old they are will not delete. All I want to see on D is data. I don't like having to scroll for a mile to get to my first folder.

A: Hard drives with unknown folders that contains random Numbers & Letters

Unless you can find out what is creating these files/folders you won't be able to do much about where they get saved. Are they folders? or files? some files with random letters and numbers can often be attributed to an infection, but there can also be a few files of this nature that are legitimate and harmless. If you want to delete them and access is denied you can take ownership and they will then be deletable.

Let us see a DDS log as that may give some clues as to the nature of these files/folders and with a little help from us we may be able to figure out there origin.
Please go Here and follow the instructions to run DDS, then Copy and Paste both the logs into your next reply. You need not run HJT or GMER.

I removed a data drive form my computer the other day. After that I found a bunch folders
in the root directory. They have random numbers & letters in them. For Example
8081772c645ba749f would be a folder name. I have seen these type of numbers
on other dirves I have.

What is this all about and is this a security problem?
Should I try to get rid of them and clean things up?

Some of those files have a file call HotFix in them.
The folders will not delete using Internet Explorier?
There are other files in the folders that seem to be Hotfix related.
Thank you,

A:Hard drives with unknown folders that contains random Numbers & Letters

They are temp folders used by Windows. In most cases they are perfectly safe to delete. They aren't hurting anything and if Windows Explorer won't let you delete them it's because some of the files are in use.

HI all can i delete these old folders from 2012 i posted a picture there are others with random numbers and letters as well that are not folders, they appear to have a windows KB file in theme are they safe to delete ??? here is a picture of them thanks all.

A:Old folders from 2012 with random numbers and letters?

Those are left over from MS updates, if you had Windows 7 thats where they came from. You can just delete em, check inside anyway to make sure, but I'm sure you will see a KB installer.

Besides the C:/ drive, I have a D:/ and E:/ drive on my computer and more and more folders named with a string of letters and numbers keep appearing, especially on E. I've had a Windows 7 Premium Edition installed a while ago and before that I had a Windows 7 Home edition for some years.
What are those files, and how can I erase them, and should I erase them?
How can I get rid of them if I were to reinstall Windows 7 some time in the future again?
Most are empty, besides a few, and one of them in drive E is locked by the system.
They're really annoying, as I struggle to see my personal folders in all that jungle.
Thank you!

Hello everyone, I have had several folders with random numbers and letters on my computer for quite some time now. They're located in the C:\(Username)\App Data\Local folder. There's a few folders that have {FFF9808001018839} or something similar to that. When I click on them, they don't have anything in it. Some have another folder or two, but there's nothing in them either. I don't why they're on here or I should delete them or not.

I'd like to know what kind of folders are safe to have and what are not. I'm worried I may delete something that's important to my system. Before I delete anything, I do research online and I don't delete it unless I'm 100% sure that I have to. Some of things on here, may be from downloading music, programs, and videos. But none of them are on my computer any longer and I'm afraid there could be some things that shouldn't be on here.
(My computer is always running fine and there not affecting anything. It's just annoying to see all of them there and I would like to have my computer as clean as I could have it).

The other question or issue I have is that my computer seems to have the stock name on it. Three numbers and two letters. For instance my documents and files that I create are saved under C:\454HX\Documents\English Essay

That's not what it is of course, but it's similar. It's really annoying to have because it makes me feel like it's not personal. Yes, I know to go the Control Panel and Username and Account Settings. I have ch... Read more

A:Folders with random numbers and letters. Changing Computer name?

The folders you are finding in the AppData folder are just temporary folders used for things such as installations. It won't do you any harm to delete 'em, obviously because they are empty, but it also won't harm you to just leave them. If you are worried, just make sure you have an Anti-Virus with Real-time scanning. Do a full scan with Malwarebytes too, its more effective than other solutions.

I do not understand your second problem much. Are you trying to say that your User account folder in C:/Users/ has a different name than your User name? And does your real proper User Name show up in the Control Panel?

A:What Are The Folders On The C Drive With Long Names Containing Random Letters And Numbers

Hello nowthenbc,There should be nothing to worry about here. Those folders probably contain log files and/or "remnants" from Microsoft updates. I have several such folders on my system. The following is a screen snapshot of 3 of those folders: can probably safely delete those folders, but I just leave them where they are because they don't consume too much space.

It took me all day to figure it out but I finally got my printer to share from my PC to my Macbook...but the only problem now is that when I print from my Macbook my printer just prints out random strings - letters and numbers. It also will just constantly spew out these pages - it doesn't stop unless I cancel the print. Doesn't matter what I print. I read on another forum that it might be related to missing fonts, but I can't verify this. Any ideas?

A:add more hard disk or change it from letters to numbers

It is not possible to have more than 26 mounted drives. If access to more filesystems than this is required, Volume Mount Points must be used. However, it is possible to mount non-letter drives, such as 1:, 2:, or !: using the command line subst utility in Windows XP or Vista (i.e. "subst 1: c:\temp"), but this is not officially supported and may break programs that assume that all drive letters are A-Z.

I run two 80GB Seagate hard drives, each with three partitions on them. I use C drive to put windows on, D drive for my apps and E drive for music files, pictures, video etc. On the second hard drive I skip the F drive in case I ever need to load another operating system on it and on G and H, I mirror what's on my D and E drives for backup purposes. I do this through a software sync program. It's not a RAID setup.

Anyway, about three weeks ago I was refomatting. I do this alot because I'm kind of a perfectionist and I want everything installed perfectly. I also tend to mess with the registry a little to much, because I like it clean and without errors, but that's another topic!

But this time I was reformating it was right after I had to installed a new second hard drive and partition it. I'll come back to why I mentioned that in a second.

During my last two reformats, after I loaded Vista, I went to my computer and noticed that some of the Drive letters had changed on both hard drives. I can't remember exactly which letters changed to what, but it was like my D drive, I believe was now F and so on. All in all, three drives had changed or switched around drive letters. The data was all still there on partitions C, D and E, but the letters were off.

I even checked in Windows Vista Disk Management and noticed the changes there too. But I wasn't about to use the Disk Management tool to make any changes back to the right way. For that, I fire... Read more

Windows assigns drive letters every time you boot up, so if you continually make changes to partitions you are going to see different drive letters.

I have two 1TB drives, each containing 4 partitions, used for backing up 4 computers. These drives are regularly switched between buildings as part of our backup strategy, always having one off-site. I have assigned drive letters M,N,O,P to respective partitions. When I swap the drives, the drive letters get reset and have to be manually reassigned. I have tried several suggested methods of assigning the drive letters, including USBDM, but get no results.

Computers: HP Compaq 8200 Elite - CMT - 1 x Core i5 2500 / 3.3 GHz - RAM 4 GB - SSD 1 x 160 GB - DVD?RW (?R DL) / DVD-RAM - HD Graphics 2000 - Gigabit Ethernet - Windows 7 Professional 64-bit - Intel vPro Technology
Docking Stations: ICY DOCK MB877SK
Hard Drives: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB

A:Drive letters change when swapping hard drives

Right you are using 2 different drives. Manually Assigning letter to one of them Restrict those letter from being used on the other. When you switch them out the letters have to be manually assigned again. That is how it is suppose to be. Windows Remembers each Drive serial # and or some other drive parameter and sees them as different drives, which they are.

The only way around it is to let Windows assign the letters automatically but that may not work on multiple systems if each of those system have different number of HDDs, Partition on the HDD and or different number of CD/DVD drives install in the systems.

Hi Tech Support Guy forums!

I am very grateful for the services you have provided to everyone on the internet!

I am currently working with a Windows XP Laptop and am trying to get access to my wireless internet connection.

I am renting a room so I cannot set the wireless password. The password is longer than the number of numbers I can put into my PIN password when I automatically connect to the service via my wireless manager (only 8 numbers/letters).

The error box that pops up once I attempt exceed my 8 digit limit is (to finish entering the entire password):

"Wi-FI protected Set-up Wizard:
Check sum validation failed for PIN entered"

If there is some software update or anything I can do to let me type the full password, please let me know!

Thank you for your time!

A:Wireless PIN only accept up to 8 numbers/letters.

The WPS pin is diffrent from the wireless security key. It requires you physicly press a button on the router and on the adapter to connect. I wouldnt use this, they key you have is most likley the WPA or WEP key.

I bought a new computer when the CPU of my old computer suddenly failed. I pulled out the old master hard drive from my old computer. Hoping to retrieve some old important documents from this old drive, I put it in a USB hard drive enclosure and hook it up to my new computer using USB 2.0. I really do not want to open my new computer and install the old drive as an internal drive. The new computer is able to read this old drive with no difficulty. However, I am not able to access the "My Document" folder in my old hard drive. I have attempted to solve this by creating in the new computer the same user name that I have used in my old computer and log on using this old user name. If you plug in another keyboard it is fine. Hmm off hand it sounds to me like it is a problem with the on board keyboard. That is a real feat on a laptop to replace. Is the laptop still in warrantee? If so I would call Samsung tech support right away, as a matter of fact I would call them on this matter anyway, they may have something about this that might just be covered by a recall or something, and they are the experts at their equipment.

when i hit letters in my applications, it says im hitting numbers, and even when i hit the numbers on my keyboard, it starts going "1,2,3,4,5" ect. just from hitting 1 number. for instance when i go on youtube and hit 1 on a video player, its supposed to keep taking me to a certain part of the video, but it just keeps going forward until it restarts and then goes through again. also when i play minecraft and i try changing my settings, if i want to set "move left" to "a" it says i it number 1!?!? i know a good bit about computers, but this is just BAFFLING me, i have looked ALL OVER this website and all of the people that had this problem just had there NUM lock on, and i cant use any applications while this problem is going on, so please, anyone, help me out

A:Keyboard is typing numbers instead of letters? (NUM LOCK IS NOT ON)

If this is a laptop see if this helps.

If you're writing numbers instead of letters when you press the keyboard of your laptop and you must hold down the Function key (Fn) to write normally.

This is due to the fact that the digital lock is activated. To solve this, simply press the Fn+Numlk or depending of the model, press the button or Fn + Shift +Numlk

This seems to happen at random times and I cant get rid of it unless I restart the PC, which is what makes me think this is a software, not a hardware problem because my keyboard should be fine really. This only started happening a few weeks after I had made a fresh installation of Windows 7 (previously used XP).

Basically the problem: All of a sudden a random number of keys that are supposed to type letters type random numbers instead. The number of letter keys afflicted on average is probably around 10-30% of the total keys. Which keys are afflicted and what numbers they produce is random.

So when i type "This sucks" I might get instead "th5s 4u34s". Also functions bound to Q in a video game will not function when I actually pres Q in case it would produce a number while typing.

Every once in a while my computer enters strange things all by itself, following several examples:

This can happen if I have a notepad open (Jarte), or a Word document (2003), or a browser (Firefox 35.0).

Sometimes I notice it after I wake it from having been in Sleep mode, but not necessarily always. It apparently can also happen when I just leave it on but without doing anything.

I have run the Sophos virus removal tool scan and it says the computer is clean.

Any ideas what this could be? Thanks.

I have sought a solution for this problem for a few weeks and cannot find one.

My notebook is an HP Pavilion dv9005ca Laptop (17in. screen) and has a separate numeric keypad. Running Windows XP SP2 with all patches.

The keys: M,JKL,UIO produce numeric characters (0 to 6) when the num lock key is on and the correct characters when it is off (some other keys on that side of the keyboard produce symbols found on the numeric keypad).

Following HP support suggestion at [url not allowed:-( ] I have tried the Fn + num lock combination but this does nothing.

When I first boot up the characters are normal until the num lock key is toggled.

At some point a while ago when entering text I believe I inadvertently pressed a combination of keys that caused this problem.

I hope someone can help.

I was wondering if there is a quick way (or even a not-quick way) to 'cross-sync' two hard drives (or certain folders on two drives) if they each contain a lot of the same stuff but let's say there may be some items that exist only on one or the other drive and you want to sync so that both drives keep all their info and end up with everything on each without losing anything?

For instance I had music in two folders- a lot of it was in each folder but then I had added other stuff to one and I went through manually to see what matched up and what folders I needed to copy over- I guess I could have copied the entire music folder and told it to overwrite any same files but that's a little scary when it's a huge number of files, and it made me wonder, what if I also had a few things on drive 2 that weren't on drive 1? Just trying to make sure I have two back-ups of everything without having to look through every single folder to compare. Thank you.

This is my problem... I had to reinstall windows and all is going well so far (just very tedious), but after plugging in my external hard drives one of them has folders that I believe are from Microsoft Update installations (which included a couple of device drivers) or possibly from HP device updates... (they look like this L:\7f6b418af72e04b214924794b837d42e). I'm guessing these folders should be appearing somewhere on the C drive similarly to the M$ update logs within the Windows folder. Or maybe they should just be disappearing after the update is installed. I'm not worried about these and feel comfortable deleting them, but I'd like to just not have it happen. I think this has happened to me before, but it was a long time ago and I cannot remember the solution.

I'd appreciate any ideas as to how to have these files route to the correct destination.

Thanks much in advance,

Hi...I have an Acer AO255 functions well aside from a problem with some numbers (4,6,8,0) and some letters (p and a capital V) that do not work...also number 6 is constantly in a connected state (not physically depressed but typing away in any space available)`s not the leyboard itself that needs changing but something inside that I figure is somehow stuck and causing a constant connection of the number 6...the other letters and numbers that are not working are at times intermittently working but in the main not !

It is not the keyboard itself that is malfuntioning as the number 6 is merrily typing away even when the keyboard is disconnected...anybody have any ideas as to what could be causing this please ?

The Acer itself works`s just this key/number thing...I don`t use it now as I have other laptops to use but when I have used it,it`s easy enough to browse etc...but you can imagine the difficulty when needing to type ! ...I have a feeling a connection is stuck but don`t know what or where to look to check.

Help! I have to show a group of school kids how to do this but I haven't used Access in years so don't know how to do it myself :s

For an Access project I need to be able to generate a unique student ID, which combines letters from the students name with a sequential number that is always one more than the highest currently in use. I have a forename field so I plan on using the first two letters of the forename plus a unique number. Is it possible to auto ID this?

Any advice would be appreciated.

A:Access - Create unique ID combining letters and numbers

Off the top of my head I can't think of one. My suggestion would be to create a field that concatenates the first two letters from the forename field with an autonumber field. The autonumber field will give you your sequential numbers and the concatenate field will give your unique identifiers.

nothing seems to work.

i've completely reloaded my system 4 times now (and even bought a new hard drive for a fresh install), i've spent hundreds of dollars on a couple of new external hard drives to keep all my business files intact.

it began with one of my extra drives shutting down every time i accessed it. it was a storage disc for my office files.

then, the problem began happening on all of my external hard drives and then, it appears, any folder that contained video files. i noticed a suspicious looking file called thumbs.db (which is usually normal, but this one is kind of greyed out- it looks different than what i'm used to seeing).

i thought i had the problem licked until today when i reloaded my system yet again (and now it takes about 10 minutes for the black screen to come up with "windows xp" and finally load).

i also spent 2 and a half hours on the phone with microsoft, who couldn't help me either

so, if anyone can help i will be eternally grateful!

i'm very new to this posting stuff so, if anyone could help could you please email me directly at [email protected] so that i don't miss your help?

I know what I'd do and it's a no-brainer, Restore again. Don't install SP1.
Especially if your system was working fine without it.
Just because a service pack is released doesn't oblige you to install it, no more than a driver update obliges you to install that.

I've used Word 2007's Multilevel List feature many times, but only with numbers (I'm very comfortable with setting up the lists and they've always worked in the past). I now need to do a mixture of numbers and letters on one level and I can't seem to make that happen. For example, Level 3 might typically be 1.1.1, but my client wants 1.1.A. Now, I can make that happen on Level 3 without a problem. The issue starts in Level 4. For example, say I had worked my way down in the document from 1.1.A to 1.1.C and I wanted to insert a Level 4 after this 1.1.C. I would need it to automatically insert a 1.1.C.1, and I can't seem to make that happen when I'm setting up the list. It always wants to change the entire list to either all numbers or all letters. Hello everybody!

First I want to thank all of you who maintain this great site with useful solutions of many windows problems. I tried to search some suggestions for this one too but did`t find anything, so decided to beg for your help. Please excuse my poor English.
I`m using Dell Inspiron 6400 notebook with windows vista home premium and 120gb hard disk. A week ago it happened that the memory on my C: drive suddenly went to 0 bytes without downloading or copying anything at all on C: at that moment, with no connection to internet. I was sure to have at least 4gb before starting to copy some files from C: to an external 250gb hard drive and the memory got eaten during this process. After copying I cleaned about 2 gb which decreased mysteriously to about 400mb after few minutes. I ran ccleaner but didn`t get more than 50mb of temporary files.
I searched around the web about this, and the most common reason for loosing space I found was the shadow storage and the restore point service. I tried to fix it but did`t work for me because since I had the memory space gone to 0 bytes, all the restore points was automatically deleted. After cleaning up some more space I set up a restore point manually, but naturally the shadow storage didn`t exceed 300mb.
Then I used a little program called TreeSize witch allowed me to see the space used by all the folders in C: and I found something really strange. In the windows directory there was a hidden folder named F that contained info... Read more

Okay everyone, here's what I'm dealing with...

This started two days ago, and I'm not sure why. It's similar to the browser hijack except it only kicks on when I get search results via Google, Bing, etc and click on a result.

If I type a domain name in, it doesn't affect anything. Here's an example of what is happening:

I use google to search ""

Google returns results (this forum being one of the first) so I click on it. I get redirected to a page URL starting with, and sometimes it stops there as an undeliverable page. Other times it may cycle through several URLs before landing on a final page. I just did this again and here's where I ended up:

It's apparently hijacking the browser to generate clicks to its affiliates. Real scumbags must be running this thing.

Things I've tried:

MalwareBytes - Runs it course, finds issues, cleans them, but the problem remains.
HijackThis - same as MalwareBytes

I realize this is a pretty new thing, and help may not come for a while, but I would like to avoid a complete reformat. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, I thinking that I would need more space for my PC, I currently have 250GB (2x100GB partion with the rest unallocated) with Windows 7 & Windows XP (I could get rid of XP but I still use it because I can't get the microphone to work with Windows 7). Anyway I have purchased a Samsung 1.5TB internal hard drive (32MB cache, SATAII, 7200RPM), and I was wondering if there's anything I should do to be able to use it, I'm confident that I can install it myself (mainly done minor work eg. replacing the GPU, memory, a case fan, CPU fan & and GPU fan, and a hard drive cooler (basically 2 small fans that go on top of the HD) (which seem like they do nothing so I may as well take them out but that's another story).

Is the only things that I have to do is plug the 1.5TB drive in and then format it or is there more to it then it seems, I've just been doing light-reading and just come across RAID and stuff like that.

Compaq Presario SR5060AN product specs

A:Just some random questions about hard drives.

The short story is that you shouldn't have any problems. Just plug it in and carry on. Look in the BIOS to make sure it is recognized as full capacity--it may show in Windows as about 1.39 TB.

No need to mess with RAID for a typical user.

There is some chance your motherboard won't support the drive and not make the entire capacity available.

If that happens you would probably have to hope there is an updated BIOS that would support the full capacity. Maybe HP has an updated BIOS and maybe they don't.

Only way to find out is to try. Your machine is from late 2006 or newer, so I'd say you have a pretty good shot.

I have an external hard drive that I use mostly for storing backup images and files. A few weeks ago three folders showed up on the drive. The file names are a random assortment of letters and numbers and they are locked. Although I have the administrative account, whenever I try to delete these folders or change permissions for them it says I lack administrator privileges and that access is denied. In the Security tab in the folder properties dialogue box, it lists my user name as well as a user by with a very long name starting with S-1-5-21-4294891926...on and on an on. I did not set up this account and nobody else uses my computer!

I have no idea what these folders are (I can't open any files in them as it says I don't have permission!), I don't know why it's telling me I don't have privileges to open them when I have the administrator account and nobody else uses my computer, and I would like to get rid of them. If somebody could fill me in on what's going on here, thank you in advance!

Could be Recycle Bin Storage and/or System Restore...I wouldn't delete them.

I've had some nasty adware that I've been trying to get rid of. Nothing seems to do the trick so hopefully you guys can help me rid my rig of this nasty bug. I've changed harddrives, wiped harddrives, used KillDisk, ESET online scanner, MBAM, AdwCleaner, Avast, JRT, everything. Hell, I even thought it was a virus in the BIOS it was so persistent, so I just removed my CMOS battery after using KillDisk, and re installed. Everything was fine, until I went to razers website for my mouse driver, pop up, adware, and whenever I try to download something, another exe is prompted from a suspicious url (usually named Setup.exe but it can be anything) before my actual exe is downloaded. I have no idea what to do at this point, and anything you guys could do would really help, this is a fresh install of Windows 7 so I doubt the DDS scan will show anything but I'm posting it anyway.

Hi All,

Really hope someone can help and I don't have some dead HW. I'm currently running Memtest and will update this thread with results, dumps etc after the test finished and I can access the PC's HDD's - just wanted to get the thread started.

So this morning I go to wake up my PC and find it has BSOD overnight for the first time ever, rebooted and got BSOD again after noticing AVG wanted to reboot. Thought it might be related to an overnight AVG update so uninstalled AVG... got BSOD again. Noticed there were windows updates overnight too so restored to last week. BSOD continues with different reasons.

So I decided a clean HDD and OS was a good idea, added a new HDD and started to install from USB and got BSOD 3 times trying to install with different reasons. Eventually installed clean OS and all drivers and then once again got BSOD

Will post dumps and update specs from effected PC ASAP.

A:Persistent BSODs, random reasons, different hard drives, clean install

Attachment 261182 Here's the Grab All from the latest BSOD of the new OS build with new HDD.

Also the PC Passed the basic Memtest with no errors.

When setting a password for user, when I type it, it shows up as black dots but when I retype the next line, it shows up as the letters, numbers and symbols that I'm typing. It won't let me set it.

What the heck is going on? Thanks

A:setting password - line 1, black dots : line 2, letters & numbers

Welcome to the forums!

Not 100% sure what you're saying here. Is this for your account? Or a new one? Administrator or standard? Or are you trying to save a password in Windows so you don't have to log in each time?

Our school currently has 800+ Probook 640 G2s and I've been repairing them but starting to come across a trend. The device won't come on AT ALL. I've replaced motherboard, power button board, tried different battery both in and out, reseated ram and tried the other location, different SSD and power supplies. I've almost built a new one a few times. We sent one off for them to repair at Depot so I could figure out what I'm doing wrong and the repair sheet came back with 3 parts. 845847-601 System Board (I know what this is obviously even if that part number doesn't match anything for the laptop). 846867-001 Hardware, HDD Bracket / Screw / ODD Bracket / Smart846868-001 Hardware, HDD Bracket / Screw / ODD Bracket / Smart The two above parts however I don't know what they are. Our machines have SSDs in them and there's no bracket. It plugs straight into the MB and 1 screw holds it down. I've tried the part searcher and it finds nothing (not even for the system board number). If anyone has any ideas it would be MUCH appreciated.

I have a Vaio laptop PCG GRS 100P 1.6GHz typing in all programs keeps going random with sudden bursts of characters like those shown below cut and pasted from Trillian.
In My Computer random files are selected and the folders window slips up and down highlighting wildly when I hold down leftbutton on the Synaptics touchpad and put the arrow on the slider. I have only been able to type this by opening Notepad and saving a phrase at a go.

For example: SYSTEM (C (C DATE (D (D USB (K (K
Any idea why this is happening or how to change it back?

A:Solved: All drives now have 2 letters
