Q: Jerky Tech support?

Hi am using W7 Pro 32bit & G Chrome, when I receive an email notification about my post from Tech support & click on the link it won't let me log in & the Tech support forums site keeps jerking, is it coz I have Adblock installed?

Any clues why?

When I installed Win8 on one computer I need a H.P. printer driver. So I went to H.P. support/download did not find the needed driver so I called their Tech. support. A friendly support guy looked at my system and told me my copy of Microsoft Win8 bought at Best Buy was not a legit copy, also my system had been infected and they needed to remove my Win8 clean my system and reinstall Win8. made me a deal of a reduced price of $250US I knew this was not right so I begged them good buy went to Best Buy where I have good friends in the Geek Squad. they got the needed driver and printer works fine. Today my Netgear routher died, called Netgear to get my lifetime warranty. This also was a support in India guy said it would cost$39US to make sure it was the router I said thanks but no thanks. Took my old Netgear router back to Best Bye where I bought it three years ago and they gave me a new Netgear router. I needed setup help so called Netger as new user also in India guy was friendly looked at my system and helped me get it setup. Then he informed me my computer was under attack and my files were being read he could fix my system and protect my files for the small sum of just $85US. Well I was using a small backup H.P. computer on the Net. hardwired and it was almost never used. So I knew it was a India Tech. support scam again. Once I started up the computer I discovered that my USB ports don't work. Last Friday when my video card died, my 4 year old broke the two front USB ports. The computer's manufacturer surmises this shorted out the back ports and now wants to replace the motherboard and case. Both are under warranty, thank goodness. So now my conundrum, I didn't buy the new PSU from the manufacturer, but it is the same brand as my old one. Do I just send the box back with the new one (which lets them organize the cables ten times better than I can) or do I put the old one back in? Or do I send both? Not Responding message appears and everything stops working for a while. Scrolling also doesn't always work. Sometimes the arrow changes to the hourglass and stops working. After a while it changes back to the arrow again and so it continues. Quite regularly I get the "script not working" message window in the middle of the screen with "continue" or "cancel" options. Sometimes it is the Shockwave plugin and at other times it is Google or other script. And often the end program command doesn't work. I just installed XP on an old computer 2 days ago and ran all of 142 Windows Updates. As for your current installation, try running a Clean Boot. If this works then add one startup item at a time, restarting each time till the computer becomes unresponsive, then you know what the problematic program is. Also, go to Start/Run and type chkdsk C: /R and press enter, in the command prompt type a Y for Yes and reboot the computer. Check Disk will go thorough 5 stages and takes some time. The first time the tech said my computer was sending out warning messages to them. I asked him how it was doing that I cannot remember what he said he asked "you are using windows OS correct?" I said so I use a Mac he hung up when I said that. I just laughed and let it past. A few hours they call back. They have called several times and today they call claiming they are "Dell tech support" I do have a Dell laptop (How they know that?) They said my Dell was sending them warnings bla bla bla. The "space issue" actually was caused by a surplus of photos I had in "MY PICTURES" which I thought I had removed after I burned them to a disk as well as video files located on another user profile. Anyhow, I contacted HP support and was advised to do a "non destructive" recovery and was completely assured that this would resolve my problem and all files and applications would remain in tact unharmed. Well that was crap. Once the recovery process was complete, all user information was gone. No user profiles existed on the login screen. I had to recreate a user profile. The recovery reverted everything to "factory settings", however all files were found on the old user profile which was located under "documents and settings" on the c:\ drive. Seems like almost once a month, I get a download that totally screws up AVG. You get red warning messages, everything shuts off, cats and dogs moo, cows fly, etc. Anyway, you would think a company like AVG would have a better tech help section. I have uninstalled and reinstalled my version of AVG at least 3 times in the last three months. The first time it took their tech support 2 weeks to answer my help question and it had nothing to do with the problem. I finally fixed it myself by reinstalling it. I sent them my problem again as it just happened and they their tech site told me that its a weekend and the reply might not be answered till monday. I did the usual uninstall(which by the way their uninstaller does not uninstall, it freezes about half way through and I have tried several times in a row and it freezes no matter how many you do) I had to remove it by using REVO then reinstalled it and it is working properly. Got my computer in April and all of a sudden it quit loading up after a restart or shut down. So they diagnose it over the phone as a bad power supply. I send it in, they have it for a week and a half and sent it back today, so I turned it on and it has the exact same problem. I call them back and they say well it must be the motherboard. I can not believe that they didn't at least test the thing out to see if it worked before sending it back to me. Especially when I emailed them last week to check the status of my computer and they told me it was still going through the diagnostic testing process. Wouldn't any type of diagnostic test show a bad motherboard, I mean thats kind of important isn't it? So now I have to send it back in to them, and be without my computer again for probably another 2 weeks. To make a long story short, she had to provide them with both her log in & email passwords and then they wanted to charge her$215 to clean her computer.
That doesn't make sense to me - I'm not aware of any reliable ISP tech support asking for passwords. I know they ask for permission to take control of a computer and then supply a service number the computer user has to enter. Is this something new that an ISP tech support asks for passwords.

She has changed her email password and I recommended to her to also change her log on password.

The space issues was from too many picture files, which i discovered my husband had uploaded about 1500 pictures of a friends wedding. so once i got rid of those pictures, the space issue was resolved. After being completely frustrated, and a lot of research, I read to "copy over" my old user profile files from under "documents and settings" to the new profile i created.. which I did. I watched them remove my "Revo uninstaller", my "Should I remove it" and my "Spybot" When I asked the representative why she said because they all have a bad reputation for Malware. However, unfortunately I did call the number, and when they wanted money I said absolutely not. Now, when I power up that PC, I get a pop-up that asks for admin password (not the Windows or BIOS popup). I tried command prompt, system restore, and reinstalling windows deleting everything but what was installed and personal files, and still the same popup requesting a password. I tried Esc, and cancel and enter, all not working.

Any suggestions? Any help at all greatly appreciated

Last weekend I was on the phone with Netgear for 4 hours trying to install a simple router and wireless adaptor for the second computer in the house.

The box says "normal installation time 20 minute"

Yesterday, the computer failed in loading Windows XP, so I had to restore the computer to a date PRIOR to the installation of the wireless adaptor.

Today, after 90 minutes on the phone, speaking to a man with an accent so thick, he had to spell just about every word (Whiskey Oscar Romeo Delta) using the phonetic alphabet.

Then we reach my boiling point where I can take it no longer, here's the conversation:

Netgear: Now, under >basic >wireless read me the number
Me: There is no number
Netgear: Yes, very good, now read me the number on the screen
Me: I'm looking at the basic-wireless screen, there is no number on the screen anywhere, am I in the wrong place?
Netgear: No, you are in the right place, just read me the number
Netgear: Yes, thank you, please read me the number on the screen.
Me: Sir, are you listening to me? Say these words back to me, "there is no number on the screen to read."
Netgear: What do you mean there is no number? Of course there is a number there.
Me: May I speak to your supervisor?
Netgear: No, I will solve your problem.
Me: "click" I hung up.

90 minutes, problem remains, and I get a survey from netgear asking me to rate their customer service.

I support 2 labs where students log on to the domain. All the workstations are XP Pro. How do I copy a printer into "all users" profile so that everybody logging on sees the printer. I don't want to set the printer individually on each profile..

Log on as administrator, or yourself if you have admin rights. Add a printer as Local Printer and uncheck automatically detect, create a new port as Local port, where the port name is \\printserver\printername then just allow the wizard to complete.

I need to speak to a support tech in the US.  I was told I had this option when I bought my computer.  I am still in warranty, have a 3 year HP Care Pack.  I spent most of a night from 8:30 PM to 2:30AM on the phone with some guy that had me actually attempting to take off the side panel on my computer and move some plugs.  These people were rude, obnoxious and didn't help at all.  Now they want to come out and change my hard drive??????  They wanted me to do it at first but I told them no.  I run my home and business on this computer and i can't afford to be down for 3 days and lose all of the software I've paid for.  I don't have another computer to put the software on.  I need a United States technition.  I had them when I bought the computer directly from HP and used them, they were great and a real pleasure to work with.  They knew what they were talking about!!  Is there any way to get to one of these guys or girls again.  I had this all written down and cannot find the sheet anymore.

Our company, a small based business, wants to get into Remote Tech Support, Customers call in, or visit the website, and we fix problems remotely.
Of couse they must have internet access...that works...

Asking from all the people here, who has ideas of what kind of software would do this?
I have checked multiple online companies, prices can get steep.
Only 1 person, maybe 2, will be doing this remote support starting out, so dont need anything with 50+ users license.

I was thinking like PCAnywhere, or VNC, and such, but not sure how that would work web based and such...and I know Microsoft has the Assistance built into MSN Messenger, but it is remote view only i believe.

Anyway, I would greatly appreciate some alternatives...especially cheap ones!

Okay,I messed up, my laptop (Toshiba L755) was infected and just after xmas I noticed my documents and pictures (everything for my 501.c.3 animal rescue) was GONE. I panicked and somehow wound up on the phone with ATS. They had me put it in safe mode and THANKFULLY (from what I saw) all my pics and docs were there!!! They did a remote in to my laptop and said it would be several hours and they would fix it, A WEEK LATER (with daily phone calls) NOTHING, and on the second day, everything was gone from safe mode too. I was furious and even tho they refunded my money, I still do not have my stuff back, I am heart broken, these docs and pics are SO important to my nonprofit work, it has been horrible... Can anyone help???

My grandfather got taken in by a Microsoft Windows Support Scam and I'm fairly certain that his laptop's got a bug that I can't get rid of.

What happened:

He got a popup (while using Internet Explorer and after downloading an Adobe update) that said there was a security issue and that he needed to call a number for Windows Firewall Service.
(I looked up the number and apparently other people have been taken in by this scam. Here it is on a Microsoft forum:

So in recent days I have been advised by Microsoft that they cannot provide me with support resolving a windows 10 activation issue. I replaced a motherboard for one of my clients and it failed activation even after reentering the key. Everything looked as it should be to activate. I went to Microsoft for support and they refused to help me because i am a technician ..not the owner of the PC. This policy of not providing tech support to computer repairers because they are not the owners of the system is ridiculous. I am interested to know if anyone else has had similar experiences from microsoft "support"

I've thrown everything I could at this so far.
Malware bytes, superantispyware, hijack this, ccleaner...
I could throw more I guess.

I'm going to take the drive out and scan it on another machine.
But I have seen this before and it angers me.

SVCHOST.EXE starts eating resources, less than five minutes after boot, its near 100%.

Ran process explorer. SVCHOST is eating memory as well, but but not like cpu power. On the TCP/IP thread, it shows connections, and they are constantly coming in. I stopped it by closing svchost.exe, and installing zone alarm. Zone alarm blocks all the connections.

These connections are being started on my machine.
I ran netstat -ab
The files are ws2_32.dll and wininit.dll in the system32 directory.
I tried to remove these files, but then I got a blue screen on boot.

So what do you suggest?
I have a similar problem on a client machine. Both our computers take us to scour.com or some page on it. His is establishing connections as well.

Yesterday I got a call from an unknown number. The caller introduced himself as jack and told me he was from a company contracted by dell to provide software support sand that he had received reports from my computer that the was malware on it and my files were at risk. The call followed the same routine described by others and he asked me to use the run box to show me the problems.
He had my phone number, email and service tag but I was suspicious from the start and when he asked me to run www.remcontrol....... I told him I wanted to confirm his credentials before continuing.
He gave me a phone number which I called and the guy who answered gave me the same story but did nothing to confirm their authenticity.
After this I hung up and did not answer the two subsequent calls. It seems to me that dell has had a security breach that has put customers information in the hands of scammers.
Does anyone have any other info regarding this scam?

You describe a textbook case of a classic phone scam, in every aspect. You were right to not give them any info or to visit their website.
The aim is to get you to surrender your computer via remote control to the scammers, for their various nefarious purposes. It is so easy these days for scammers to mine various 3rd party databases for your personal info, to lend a sense of legitimacy to their calls, but these calls out of the blue are all scams that have been going on for years.
It bears repeating:
1) No computer (or operating system) vendor can detect problems (including malware) on your computer over the internet. Not Dell, not HP, not Microsoft, not Apple etc.2) No legitimate vendor will cold-call you (phone or email) with such a message.3) Never turn over control of your computer over the internet, unless you have initiated contact with the vendor, using contact info you trust, in order to solve a problem you have identified with their hardware or software, and their tech support recommends this approach. In practice, this will rarely, if ever, be needed.

I downloaded BuzMe Free and had call forward on busy activated last week. It shows online on the BuzMe site that call forwarding has not been activated although I've called the phone company and verified twice that it has. The phone company has also repeated the toll-free number to me twice and they have it right

When I contact tech support at BuzMe, I get an auto-reply. I've followed all of the steps, but when I reply to the message as directed ("If these don't solve your problem, email us at...."), but I keep getting the same auto message. Also, if I click the link in the email ("I've set up my call forwarding but I'm not being notified of incoming calls. Why?" - click here), but get a syntax error.

Has anyone had this trouble? Does anyone know what information I may be missing at the site that will help me solve this problem?

Hello All,

My son just called me saying a window popped up saying something along the lines of "your computer may be infected.  call Microsoft tech support" and then they listed a number to call. Well, my son being the computer savvy expert that he is called the freakin number. He let whomever on the other end log into our computer and then told my son he needs \$200.00 to clean it up for us. Could anyone tell me what (if any) damage could have been done?? This is the kids computer, so, as far as i know there is no important login information on it. But it is connected to the house wifi and I just don't know if that could be an issue.

I am about to graduate with a computer science degee, and always enjoyed tech support.
I worked as a part time sys admin for a 60 employee company for 9 months, and now
I do it as a part time thing and only have a handfull of small businesses as clients.
I would like to give it a shot as a career, and would like some advice from those altruistic techies out there.... well you all are altruistic or else you would not be reading this....

basically my question is what resources do you recommend and what tools should i have?

i am reading a big book about the A+ certification... learning a few things about OLD computers... and don't forsee a reason to pay 350 for the certification soon...

is there an essential diagnostic kit out there that i do not know about it?

Hmm, where to start.

As for certifications, the A+ is a good place to start. It might be a bit archaic, but my workplace (major IT tech support company) does the training and requires that you have it to progress, and tons of companies still regard it quite highly. And anyway, knowing about the older stuff really helps with understanding a lot of the newer stuff. So I'd go for that. Microsoft certifications don't hurt either. After those maybe a couple of linux ones, or a CCNA if you're into networking.

Your diagnostic tools are a good start. Generally so long as you've got a good set of screwdrivers you're laughing. As for software, I'd highly recommend you get some kind of bootable diagnostics disc. Two I'd recommend are Insert (http://www.inside-security.de/insert_en.html), which is a small and primitive, but potentially lifesaving bootable Linux disc, or if you're more of a Windows boy I'd strongly suggest Ultimate Boot CD (http://www.ubcd4win.com). Bit of a pain to make the disc, but once done it's invaluable, full of really useful utilities. Both of those will serioualy come in handy for systems that no longer boot. The Windows one even lets you clean off spyware and viruses. Not bad for free.

Hi Im ross and I have really let my computer go. I have a huge ammount of security issues with my computer. Ive seen you guys solve some major problems and I was hoping you could do the same for me. Since there are a number of them I decided to create my own thread instead of filing this under an existing one.

1. A severe infestation of full screen pop ups of "Top Searches on teh Web" and pop ups asking me to install anti pop up software but for a price. I know pop ups are everywhere but these are the same ones on a daily basis that occur whenever I am connected to the internet.

2. A pop up that opens up to 50 blank IE pages and locks up my computer, also occurs when I am connected to the internet.

3. A file called "Links" in my favorite is constanly replaced although I delete it.

4. My AIM text boxs lock up and turn all my text into capital letters, forcing me to use caps lock to return them to normal size.

5. My computer allows me to install McAfee anti virus but something then causes a critical error when I attempt to scan my computer. I assume this is related to an existing virus.

6. My floppy drive fails to read floppys and claims that they are all unformatted disks, I dont chock this up to a hardware error but some sort of error within my machine.

7. My CDRW drive reads cds but only writes blank static on cds.

It's coming up to three working weeks now since I bought the game Starwars Battlefront by Activision. When I first couldn't get the game to work, I emailed them, and my emails were being returned unsent. The next day, I phoned them, which is difficult as I don't have a landline and can't get a signal near my PC, so I told them the problem with emailing them and they sent me an email to reply to.
I replied to their email straight away with all the info they asked for, then I sent another with some additional info. After some time, they replied to the one I sent with additional info saying they had no record of previous correspondance. I've been repeatedly emailing them since with all the info they've asked for and have heard nothing, I've tried their head office a couple of times over the weeks to find out what's going on, but they don't reply either. Has anyone else had these kinds of problems with Activision and what did you do? I think that if I don't get anywhere by some time next week, I'll ask for a refund... but then how do you go about getting a refund???

A:Can't get through to Activision tech support for help with Starwars BF for PC.

INSTALLATION:

When I tried to install Starwars Battlefront for the first time, after getting the first disc to start loading, it seemed to be having trouble working out which disk it wanted and which was which.
I've just uninstalled the game to see if the same thing would happen using a different disk drive or to see if the game would run without the patch, but it's still the same.

After the first disk goes in, an error message comes up to say, 'The wrong volume is in the drive. Please insert volume BC.1 into drive X' I click okay, and it then imediately asks for disk 3 and wants the file 'data4.cab' from it. When I put disk 3 in and press okay, it still asks for disk 3. Then, a moment later, the first error message comes up again, 'Wrong volume...' and wants disk 1. I put disk one in and it immediately asks for disk 2. Is something wrog wit the way this game is installing and does this mean there's a missing file?

THE MAIN PROBLEM:

I updated Starwars Battlefront before I tried to play it for the first time. I have been through all the help files and forums I can find and can't get any help. The game seems to be working fine up until just before the page where you choose which class to play, sniper etc. where the screen goes black for quite a while while the music goes scratchy and fizzles out. I see that QVC most of the time now offers life-time technical support on their HP computers.  I realize there is a total differeance between a Warranty and Technical support.   So, can I get or purchase life-time tecnical support directly from HP when I purchase a new HP computer or at any time for that matter?  Remember please, I am NOT talking about warranty here just life-time technical support and I do know the difference.

I don't know how many people have had an issue with the phone call from tech support and they want access to your computer and then they essentially lock it and you need a password to get access again and the only way to get the password is to pay them.

A friend called tonight and she was taken in by the scam. Her immediate concern was to get her pictures and other personal documents off of the computer. I have no idea what these people do or if it is just a matter of getting the password and once input everything is okay?

Anyway I took her drive out and connected it to my computer and copied off all of her personal data to a flash drive. I ran Malwarebytes and selected only drive E, which is her drive, but the only problems it showed were on Drive C. I have no idea how it detected issues on Drive C as I had unselected Drive C and only selected Drive E for a scan.

So the first question is, is there a way around the password and to be able to remove it without reinstalling the OS. or recovering from a set of recovery disks?

Second is there a way to access the control panel on her drive with it still being connected to my computer to make a recovery disk for her drive, as like most people she didn't bother making a recovery disk set so if it has to be reformatted and the OS reinstalled she has no disks? It has a partition on the drive which I assume may the recovery information but the only visible folders are system volume information and recycle bin and I do have the appr... Read more

you are not going to find a way to make the recovery's on a non working computer. the best fix is a reinstall,its likely that here recovery partition is still good ,you just need to save what you can, and run the recovery, check ASUS site for info on what key to hit on bootup to activate the recovery .
It sure is a small world when we are so gullible to think that Microsoft or someone that cares , is going to call us/little old me, and tell me my computer is sick and offer to fix it ,good luck

like the calls telling me they can offer me better interest rates on my credit cards ,and I don't even have a credit card

I have tried to log on to tech support with pogo and it tells me my log on and password are incorrect. So I go to set up a new account and it tells me my log on is already there. I can't get through to pogo to get this straightened out. It says I am there but also that I am not there.
I simply want to know how to access fast access.
Can you help?
