Overlay on icons
Why has my icons on the desktop acquired an overlay and how to get rid of it.

A:Overlay on desktop icons

Hello wysiwyg...

Never seen that one before!
Does it happen only on the desktop? If so, you might have tweaked desktop.ini.... Did you unhide all files/folders and deleted the 2 desktop.ini files on the desktop?

Try opening an elevated command prompt and type:

sfc /scannow

and let it do its system files check and repair if necessary.

Post back results.

Hope it helps

If, like me, you're the kind of person who can't pass a picture hanging wonkily without wanting to straighten it, you may find the Win7 icon overlays unappealing. I dealt with the ugly shortcut arrow easily with Option Two of Brink's typically expert tutorial at Shortcut Arrow - Change, Remove, or Restore.

The UAC shield was more problematic. The solutions I found were either too technical for me - sledgehammers to crack nuts - or didn't work or turned up other issues. So I gave up. Then, out of the blue, I thought of creating a shortcut to the program's folder location and replacing the resulting folder icon with something more appropriate from imageres.dll or SHELL32.dll, or the original from the program's .exe file. The result requires two clicks instead of one, but it's only a mallet to crack the aforesaid nut.

I don't claim this as an expert suggestion, but it may be useful to someone who thinks a prettier desktop is worth a little extra effort.

Hello Alan.

Have a look at this tutorial at the link below.

Not sure how or why this happens, but I put my computer to sleep last night (no pun intended) and this morning when turning it on all "shortcut" icons on my desktop were the same - and you can still see the regular icons behind it. Note: Only the "shortcut" icons were affected and no other ones. Also, the shortcuts all still worked properly. Just the so called "overlay" is different.

I happened to try adding a new shortcut, and when I do so all the "shortcut" icons change again.

Sometimes they all change to the exact same "overlay" and other times there can be more than one overlay, but only the "shortcut" icons are affected.

After searching the forums - I would have tried rebuilding icon cache that was mentioned a number of times, but the post has the following note:

Quote:
This will not help with any of the following icon issues:
All icons for a specific file extension display the wrong icon. This may be do to setting the wrong association for what program to open the file extension instead. You can restore the default file extension's associations to fix this icon instead.

I've also checked the default file extension's associations post and my registry entries matched up with the "lnk" entry on that page, except for:

Quote:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.lnk\ShellNew]

The original icon is still there but it is being covered by a sort of internet explorer like picture.
This is also the case in several of my maps.

It might (I am not sure) after having tried to remove the arrow out of an icon.
Everything I have tried so far, does not seem toolve the problem.

My desktop icons seem to have acquired and overlay that wasn't there yesterday. The attached picture shows an overlay that occurs on every shortcut but not on the folders listed on my desktop. I have recently deleted a fair amount of "uneeded" programs so I suspect this may be related.

Any ideas on how I can get rid of the overlay?

Last week I bought a new computer that runs Vista Ultimate x64. All was fine until I tried to install Object Desktop MyColors two days ago. It didn't seem to go well but I left the program alone and hooked up my new external hard drive to use as a backup. This required a system restart and thus the problem. When my computer came back to life after the restart almost all of my desktop shortcut icons had been replaced by a generic white page icon. First I uninstalled MyObject then did 3 System Restores at different points, but to no avail. Then I tried to change the icons from the properties menu attached to each icon. This was successful in about half of the cases. Some of the remaining icons had their proper picture associated with the program in the Start or Program menus so I just dragged then to the desktop and deleted the "white paper" icon. Now I'm left with 4 damaged icons. In each of these cases the icon properties page doesn't allow the option to change the icon, this choice is grayed out. The programs are: Microsoft Word (came already installed on the new commputer); iTunes and Smart FTP (I had installed these programs several days ago, before the problem occurred); Expression Web 2 (installed yesterday after the icon exchange). None of these programs has a copy of the proprietary icon anywhere that I can find. The Start menu shortcuts are white pages, as are the icons in the Programs menu. I fear something may have deleted a folder that these ... Read more

A:White blank icons on desktop ?

Hi, usually when they work it is not a .lnk problem, more likely an .ico problem (these are file associations) normally this effects ALL Icons or Links.

Since this is happening to only some you should first refresh your Icon cache to do this:-

Go to search and type cmd right click on the returned cmd.exe and select "run as administrator" at the command prompt type the cmds highlighted in red:- (or copy paste them)

taskkill /im explorer.exe /f (press enter) Your desktop will go blank.

next type:-
CD %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local (press enter)

next type:-
attrib -h iconcache.db (press enter)

next type:-
del iconcache.db (press enter)

Next type:-
explorer.exe (press enter) Your desktop will reappear... let us know how you get on.

When the download is finished, double click on it, this should install it. When installed, Click Start, All Programs, Powertoys for Windows XP, click Tweak UI.

Did you have a specialist help remove your trojan? If not The security team can help you with those. You are probably still infected. We cannot assist you with this issue here in the Microsoft Support Forum.

Please read this sticky: http://www.techsupportforum.com/f112...ed-203704.html

If you cannot complete any of the 5 steps for whatever reason, just continue on with the next one until they are all completed, and post your logs in The HJT Help Forum; where an Analyst will assist you. However, it is very important to make mention of any of the steps that you were not able to complete.

After you?ve posted your logs, please be patient, as the Security Team Analysts are very busy.

Hello,

I was hoping to find help with this issue. I think I may have been infected by a virus or something. I rebooted my computer after it began to slow down, and upon reboot, all my desktop icons were white/blank. I double clicked a couple of icons and a message popped up reading "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action..." Went to Google but the "solutions" I found were mostly referring to the programs started but the icons were just blank and resetting the icon file or something like that. The only program that I have been able to start is Task Manager in Regular mode, but can't open or create a new task. In safe mode I can open regedit and found a few registry tweaks to try and was able to import the first one, but after that got a message saying "the specified file is not a registry file..." I also tried to repair, and restore but Windows couldn't repair, and there wasn't a restore point available. Hoping to not have to reinstall. Anyone familiar with this issue and what can I do? Thanks in advance.

I don't know when/how it started, but now everytime I start windows, all my icons (except My Computer, My Docs etc...) appear as white squares. I know of a temporary solution, to change the icon size, and then change it back, but I'd like to know:

1. Why it's doing this
2. How to fix it (permanently)

I saw on a forum somewhere (possibly this one) that it's to do with a corrupt icon cache. This is an annoying problem and any help would be appreciated.

PC Specs (if necessary):
AMD X2 5200+

A:Desktop icons replaced with white squares on boot

You could download Tweak UI at the link below. After you install it you'll find it in Satrt>Programs>Powertoys for Windows XP>Tweak UI. Open it and under Repair choose Rebuild Icons.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

If the above doesn't correct the problem your max iconcache may need to be increased. Go to the link below and scroll down to line 166 (right column) and download the "Add Icon Cache Size to Folder Options/View" .reg file. Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. This will give you 4 icon cache choices under the View tab in Folder Options. You can experiment with the choices starting with the smallest first. See if this corrects your problem.

Hello,

All of sudden, most of the shortcut icons on my desktop have a white rectangle added to them with a small system icon in the middle of this white rectangle. Making a new shortcut still creates this "sub-icon". However, if I simply create a text document on the desktop it's ok. The weird thing is that some icons have this problem and some don't (e.g. folder shortcuts) - see screenshot below.

I have tried deleting the iconcache.db file and running a tweak called LnkFix, both to no avail. I also booted in Safe Mode and they are there too.

In desperation I did an 18 hour Acronis system restore to a few days ago when I don't recall having the problem. Still there!

Any help would be most welcome.

Kind regards

Not all the time, but 5 out of 7 days, a white blank page will appear as a 3/4's window over blocking whatever I am doing which I can select any other window or option on my toolbar and my selection will appear over the white page/window, but I have tried to close everything open and the only thing that remains is this blank white window/page blocking the majority of my desk top. This page has no options in upper right corner to close it or minimize it as well as it doesn't have any indication on my toolbar that it is even open or exists. The odd thing right now by typing this issue out, I tried right clicking on my toolbar and selecting to see my desktop which made the white page go away. Before, I tried everything to get rid if this white box by attempting to shrink it, to right clicking on it to see what pops up which nothing does, and I have tried to left click it and still nothing happens. I use to have to restart my computer to get it off my computer screen but now I guess I will just right click on tool bar and select desk top as that just worked. but I would like to know what is causing this and how to stop it. Ever since I purchased my laptop and started using it, it started to appear but not as frequent so I did not use my one time free phone tech support to solve this issue as I wanted to save it for something possibly worse that I needed immediate help with. Any suggestions, would greatly be available.

Not sure how to describe this issue. The icons on my desktop have a lock in the lower corner. Indicating that they are not to be shared. This lock randomly switches to a green check mark or to a grey X or sometimes to the file shared icon. Different ones switch to different icons when it happens. So not just the folders or just the shortcuts. But all desktop icons. The main icon picture stays the same, it's the lower corner spot that changes around randomly. The little arrow that indicates that the icon is a shortcut. This even happens on my game icons. Is this a sign of a malfunction or maybe mal-ware? I do not have Mozy or Norton installed. Running Win 7. When I turned on my PC today a AMD update was prompted. Assuming it was for a driver update, I clicked ok. Even though I uninstalled and reinstalled my driver yesterday, to try and fix a flickering problem. The update looked legitimate. Today I also uploaded and downloaded a small video file from "Bloggif.com". While I was trying to create an animated .gif. The animated .gif worked. This seems like one of those things that happens when I don't know that my pinky finger is resting on the ctrl key. But can't figure out how to keyword troubleshoot through Google. Any help or tips would be great and I thank you.

A:Green Circle with White Check Mark on Desktop Icons

Is this just the icons on your desktop, or do you see the check marks on ALL files/folders? (If you open Explorer....)

The only thing I can think of if you don't have Mozy or Norton, or some other online backup tool, would be encryption. The lock if the file is inaccessible, and the checkmark if it is accessible.

When I would create a desktop icon for a website in Windows XP, I'd see an icon that was specific to the site. You know, like the round fox with the flaming tail for Firefox, or the red M for gmail.

But when I drag a url and drop it to the desktop in 8.1 (using Firefox, btw), I get none of the site-specific icons. I see them in my bookmarks list but on the desktop every icon is only the white rectangle that I thought indicated a file, on your computer, not an internet website. What gives? Is this a Firefox thing? Can I create a desktop icon in another way? I seem to recall that in XP creating one was as simple as a right mouse click anywhere on your site and picking "create desktop icon", but that doesn't work in 8.1

I'm an old fuddy duddy, and I want desktop icons as well as bookmarks, and I don't want them all to look the same. I can put up with not being able to do anything about the text color for the names of icons if I can actually have a, hello, different icon for every site.

To anyone who can and will help--thanks.

The icon itself relies solely upon a Web site having a favicon.ico file on it somewhere. [I've lost track of it but I used to have a small program that could harvest favicon.ico files and save them but that was back with WinXP and IE6, don't know if it would work with later versions.]

Every morning (This is not exaggeration) I do mean EVERY MORNING, I get Event ID 1002 DHCP-Client that says:

"The IP address lease 192.168.x.x for the Network Card with network address 0xE0CB4E2F7281 has been denied by the DHCP server 192.168.x.x (The DHCP Server sent a DHCPNACK message")

When this happens all my icons on the desktop turn to blank white boxes and then 1 by 1 change back to their correct icon picture.

How can I stop the desktop icons from change to white then back to normal? I have already tried renaming the icon cache to OLD and restarting. Didn't work/Problem still happens. Half my desktop is filled with shortcuts and icons and it really distracting/annoying when they all go white and back to normal.

The URL picture icons (the favicon designs) on my desktop display in size 14x14 pixels (tiny) on a 40x40 pixels white background. This is when I have medium size icons. Similar phenomena appears when scaling icon size up/down. I have searched extensively but not found the problem described elsewhere. System is Win 7 64 SP1 and newest browser versions as of today. It is quite annoying. Not really a good user experience on a small HD screen.

Further description:
- URL icons earlier displayed only as white "sheets of paper". I got to where I am now by refreshing each URL icon on the desktop by re-adding the icon to the desktop, dragging it from the FireFox URL line ('copy and replace'). I have tried same approach with IE 10 and Chrome while having each of these browsers as the default. They don't place any favicon designed URL icons on the desktop, only generic IE or Chrome icons - but in full size as they should be.
- I have tried deleting the icon cache. which makes no difference.
- Installed the program IconPackager and changed Windows default icons to something new and then back again. For someone this helped with a different icons issue. In this case it made no difference.
- Windows icons behave as they should. They are not getting smaller, nor are they displayed on white background.

Help on this issue will be appreciated.

I am using GP user preferences to create shortcuts on my users' desktops. On all my Vista/Win7 machines they are fine and the icons are what I set them to be. on all my Win8 machines the icon is just a blank white square. If I right-click and view the icon,
the correct image appears. But when the user is looking at the desktop the image is blank.

I have upgraded a couple machines, scratch built one, and purchased an OEM version on a new laptop. All are the same: blank shortcut icons.

Surely I'm not the only person testing Win8 in a domain environment, right?

Greetings,

I tried asking this in Microsoft Answers without a response.

Mozy is supposed to be displaying small icons over the lower-left of a file icon, which shows the backup status, but it's not working. It looks like too many programs are trying to create icon overlays. I think they are writing to this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers

The two subkeys I'm trying to identify are:

key : EnhancedStorageShell
data: {D9144DCD-E998-4ECA-AB6A-DCD83CCBA16D}

key : SharingPrivate
data: {08244EE6-92F0-47f2-9FC9-929BAA2E7235}

How can I find out which programs created these keys?

Thanks,
Shane.

A:Overlay icons not working

Those two subkeys are there by in a fresh install of W7.

If you only add Mozy to the mix, that area of the registry should look like this:

Windows limits the number of icon overlays. Do you happen to have Dropbox too?

Hi all.
I have a really frustrating situation. I want to get rid of that overlay on my app shortcuts on desktop, but can't do it.
I tried all methods - deleting icon cache file, lowering UAC, replacing icon with another etc...but no avail.

I don't want to lower UAC settings as its for security.

Thing is, I'm logged on as administrator, but just a few app shortcuts have this overlay shield (Lotro for example).
I thought it's use is for non-admins to run certain apps easier, but why is it showing overlay if I'm admin?

It' not just that icons become really ugly, it's also I need to confirm I want to run that program. Isn't it unneccessary if I'm admin?

Thanks in advance.

It only shows up on certain files with no rhyme or reason and I believe started after someone remoted into my laptop to try to fix a problem. I wonder if they selected an option to show a certain file characteristic or something that enabled that overlay? - I am wondering 1) what does this overlay mean 2) could it be indicative of a virus 3) does it affect my file security and 4) how so I remove it?Any help or advice would be sincerely appreciated. This has me really perplexed. Am running Windows Vista on that machine.--

Hello,
I have some users with offline files enabled and they sometimes get a different overlay on their desktop icons.  Instead of the usual arrow, it sometimes is a question mark, 2 people as if it were shared, a downward facing blue arrow, or a green check
mark.  They are usually on file or URL shortcuts.  I don't think I've seen them on folders.  These users do have a large desktop.  On average, they have at least 30-40 icons on their desktops.  I've found that to resolve this issue,
I can make a change to the desktop and hit F5.  Then the overlays are the normal arrow again.  My question is what do all of those overlays mean?

If you're still having trouble after installing iTunes again, download THIS.

Save the .reg file to your desktop. Double-click it to merge it to the registry.

Restart the computer.

If the fix only opens as a text file (in Notepad), right-click the file (before opening it) and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

Hello! First time here.

I've begun experiencing odd behaviour and I haven't personally seen this before in a windows computer.
I've seen various screen bugs before but, this one's a little different and it just screams to me that it's an issue with Windows 10.

This only started happening recently.
I have not updated any of my drivers because it shouldn't be of much concern this is the only visual glitch I've been experiencing since owning this laptop(nearing 3 years now, originally was windows 8):
Acer V3-772G
Windows 10
16GB DDR3 Memory
Intel Core i7-4702MQ @ 2.20GHz
Nvidia GeForce GT 750M

The problem itself isn't urgent and is simple but odd in nature.
It's purely the desktop wallpaper experiencing issues. None of my icons are affected by it.
Originally this funny metal 'texture' would appear over my screen only on boot and log in(it's not all the time but very often) and it'd remove itself as I highlight things (so I would have to highlight the entire screen to remove this funny 'texture' completely off my wallpaper) hovering over to pre-highlight an icon would also remove this texture from around and in behind my desktop icons.

I ignored this until just then it happened mid session while I was on playing a game (may have been there for a few minutes unsure, as I'm fullscreen on my game etc.)
And despite highlighting things and moving my mouse around, it would not remove itself.
I fear the worst expecting to have to restart, but as I predicted, changing wallpaper got r... Read more

problem with desktop display properties

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two nights ago I visited the web site Flash Fun Pages to find a joke to send to a friend who is sick with cancer. I did not end up sending anything and logged out. Yesterday, the background on my desktop was hijacked by this site. I ran Ad Aware SE and AVG both regularly and in safe mode, but did not find any viruses or malware. I also ran Trend Micro House Call but that did not find any problems either.

The problem was that the backgrounds were frozen at the end of the list, on "desktop", and could not be changed. I went on line to Downloads.com and looked under desktop display hijacked and found some freeware named Desktop Hijack Fix. This got rid of the Flash Fun Pages joke links and ads, but now my desktop display backgrounds are still frozen, although they are now frozen at the top of the list--'none'. I can choose a color, but I cannot access any of the background options, including the photo of my dog, which is my background of choice.

Interestingly, there are two users of my computer, and the other user does not have this problem. I can change the display properties backgr... Read more

A:[SOLVED] opaque titles for desktop icons can't be made transparent/desktop always act

I have gone through the 5 steps.

Attached please find the Hijack This log, and the 2 DSS logs.

I cannot post the Panda ActiveScan log from my first scan because I simply forgot to upload it and when I go back to the site all it says is that 11 tracking cookies were disinfected. But I am attaching the log from my second scan. Interestingly, there were 4 additional low level tracking cookies found and disinfected. The same 8 vulnerabilities--all from Microsoft updates--remain on my computer since the software does not disnfect these or offer the opportunity to disinfect them.

Spyware Blaster has been set up to protect everything on my computer.

But the problem is still that apparently my desktop is active and cannoot be turned off. I have run Iconoid and cannot make the titles for my desktop icons transparent because it states that the desktop is active. You can see in my previous posting the work that Cool Freak has done to try to figure this out before he kicked this over to "the experts".

Please help me. It's not only that my desktop is ugly with these opaque icon title boxes, there is something wrong with my computer that is causing this that we have not identified as yet, and who knows what havoc that might wreak in the future! Thank you very much for your attention and help.

My computer has obviously picked up some type of malware or virus. I've run spybot, superantispyware, and AVG antivirus which was running when I contracted this bug. When I reboot my computer now the desktop turns white and box pops up that says, "cannot find 'file:///c:/Windows/privacy_danger/index.htm'. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct."

When I click the close on the box it goes away, the desk top stays white. When I try to use Internet Explorer I can get to a specific site with the browser bar, but the links inside of pages will get changed to some sort of avertisement page... Most ANNOYING!

I'd rather not have to reformat my hardrive... Can this be cured?

I turned off my AVG, and spybot before running the HiJackThis.log that is attached.

I've corrected most of the problems and it's working pretty good with one exception.
It has a white blank rectangle in the center of the Desktop 7 1/2 inch X 11 1/2 inch. It can't be moved and it hides the desktop theme.
It's hidden only when I open most anything, like a web site or maybe the Control Panel.
I've used Microsoft Clean Boot - Anti Virus - Super Spyware - CCleaner (Clean and Registry) - Service pk 3 is Installed
I don't have an install CD. Nividia controls don't help.
If I can't remove this white blank rectangle from the center of the screen I guess my niece will just have to live with it.
Any suggestions appreicated.

Do you know exactly what date your machine became infected?

This procedure assumes you have a system restore point to before you were infected.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode with Command Prompt by doing the following: Restart your computer.
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, start pressing the F8 key.
In some systems, this may be the F5 key.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.
Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode with Command Prompt and press 'Enter'.
Login on your usual account that has administrative credentials.
------------------------------------------------------

At the command prompt cursor, type the following bolded command and press 'Enter':

%systemroot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Follow the prompts to restore to a point before you started having trouble.

Your machine should do a System Restore and will reboot.

Upon reboot, you should get the message 'Restoration Comp... Read more

I like my Desktop to be white with clean and legible black font.....but Win7 wouldn't let me do that. So here's how I made it do it:

Note: I think I started out this process with the High Contrast #1 background theme loaded?.so maybe you should also start out with that theme before following the instructions below.

1. Type ?visual effects? into the search bar (upper right of screen) at the Control Panel.
1a. On the page which appears, click on the link to ?Adjust the Appearance and Performance of Windows.? Towards the bottom of the dropdown list on this page, UNCHECK ?Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop?

2. Take any existing Windows theme (located at: ?C:/Windows/Web/Wallpaper?) and save it (use SAVE AS) to some other place on your computer with a different name. Make sure you save it as a .JPG pic. I renamed mine ?img100.jpg? (since all other pre-installed theme pics have some other similar name with a value less than ?100?).

3. Using Photoshop (what I used) or Windows Paint or some other similar graphics editing program, open the file you SAVED AS in Step 2.
3a. Using crop (or some other method) delete all of the image from the theme so that all you have is just a plain white background picture. Depending on your graphics editor, you may be able to clear the entire picture by doing Ctrl+A (select all) and then hitting your Delete key.
3b. Save the all-white background theme you just made to ?C:/Windows/Web/Wallpaper?.

4. In the... Read more

I'm using Windows XP. With the google redirect virus running around (I fixed it last night), I've lost my Google Chrome desktop icon. There is one in the lower right hand corner, but I want one on my desktop. Is this possible?? In my younger years I demoed (sp) computers for companies and then installed them. That was a long time ago and with multiple sclerosis you lose an awful lot of your memory. Everything I learned is gone...sorry. Thanks....

I had to reset my theme to XP classic, but that fixed it.

Is there a way to save your desktop shortcuts somewhere so if you have a cool background they don't interfere by appearing on the background? I don't wanna delete my shortcuts, because for example, I have a shortcut to play a game, and in the folder on the start menu, there isnn't a way to play it. It says play online or uninstall, not play game, so I don't wanna delete the icons. But then I found some cool wallpapers and having the dk shortcuts ruins them...

A:Solved: Desktop Icons

Sure. In XP, right click on the desktop, hover over 'arrange icons' and uncheck 'Show desktop icons'. This will hide them. To get them back, reverse the process...(may take a few seconds for your system to do hits...in both directions).

I've just had Windows XP Home reinstalled. I right clicked on the desktop and clicked on New in the resulting menu. That produced a menu with a number of programs on it such as Microsoft Office. I assumed that clicking on that icon would put a shortcut on my desktop, but the Office icon it put there does not have a shortcut arrow. I am afraid to delete it because I don't know if that will delete the program or just the icon.

I wonder how I can get rid of that icon?

Thanks for your help, grandpaw

A:Solved: Desktop icons win 7

It is usually because the PC is busy loading programs after you have logged in and and can slow down Explorer which takes care of the desktop. What you need to do is trim down the amount of loaded programs. You can do this using MSConfig and disable any unwanted programs in the Startup tab by unticking them from the list.

To permanently remove items from start up you need to use Regedit and delete entries from the Run section:
HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Removing these will improve login times and make explorer load up faster and refresh the icons faster.
