Q: new dell desktop computer

new dell desktop computer
I have purchased a new Dell Inspiron (3847) desktop with windows 7 pro. In fact I have not even taken it out of the box yet.

It came with Mcafee Security Centre which Dell is apparently promoting. But, I might just forgo the Mcafee and install Avast Free Anti-virus, plus MBAM Free, and SuperAntispyware Free. I had Mcafee on a PC many years ago and I do not have anything good to remember about it.

What do you all think.

Thanks.

I'm guessing you have a Dell Dimension 1100/B110 desktop.

What's the 7-character "service tag" number on it?

This should be the audio driver for it.

---------------------------------------------------------

If you did a reinstall of Windows XP, you need to install the SP3 upgrade and then the 100+ post-SP3 high priority updates.

Your goal is to get Windows XP up-to-date and all devices working before you install a bunch of programs and extras in that computer.

Hi my name is Joe and I am having problems with my Dell. When I turn it on, it runs fast, but nothinfg happens. The monitor is not receiving any input signal and no matter what key I hit when it is booting up, makes any difference. It just sits there running fast.

The motherboard has died. It probably has an Intel 478 CPU. There are replacement motherboards still available, but you are looking at an expensive repair or refurbishment

My ISP (Qwest) has repeatedly blocked my internet access due to malware/bot detection over the past 3 months.I have 5 computers on my network, but Qwest is not able to tell me which one it is coming from. I will submit a separate topic for each computer. This one is for a Dell desktop running windows XP Home SP2 hard wired to the router. When this started happening, I was using ZoneAlarm Extreme Security only for my computer security. My ISP (Qwest) has suggested many different software solutions, which I have implemented and scanned with. They include Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool, TrendMicro RUBotted, BotHunter, Microsoft Security Essentials. I have also received information from several local computer techs to use MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware, AVG free and Avast Anti-virus. The last one I spoke with said everything Qwest has suggested is useless as is AVG free and ZoneAlarm (except maybe the firewall). He recommends MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware and Avast. I have been unable to install and run Avast on this computer, as the computer will not run, but freezes when I install it. As soon as I uninstall it again, the computer runs.Quick scans by any of these programs find nothing. Full scans produce adware cookies, but nothing else for the past month+. I pretty much run a full scan by one of them each day and remove anything that they find. Here is the most recent log Qwest sent me of the detected Bot activity. Hey my dad bought me a Dell Studio XPS 8100 with windows 7 and when ever I login the screen gets all glitchy and stuff jumps around and idk how to fix it....Does anyone else have this problem? And if so can anyone fix it? Also, I don't know if this has anything to do with this or not but when i first started the computer it had two .exe files crash while installing windows. The .exes were called sprtstart64.exe and i cant remeber the last one completely but it also ended with start64.exe and I've already tried updateing the video driver, changing to a different monitor, and using the system recovery disk and nothing has worked so far so if anyone can fix this please help.

A:Glitchy screen on Windows 7 Dell studio XPS 8100 (desktop computer)

Did you update the drivers using those from Dell, or another site?

Which Windows 7? 32 or 64 bit?
RIGHT click "computer".
left click "properties".

Is the computer new or pre owned / used / refurbished?

Did the problem begin right out of the box?

Have you contacted Dell? This system might be under warranty.

What happens if you boot directly to safe mode?

Edit:
Is this your system?

So I picked up a Dell 7010 DT motherboard for cheap. Which, at the time, I thought was a really good deal. So I bring it home and test it out, without going through the trouble of installing it in a case first. Then I started to look at the system panel connector pins to see which 2 I'll have to short out to start it up. Well, I'm still trying to figure it out. Dell must use a proprietary panel connection cause I can't figure it out.

It seems to have a 5 pin power switch connector on the MB that's separate from the system panel connector and I've tried to short the pins in the 5 pin power switch will no luck. Does anyone have any sort of schematic of how this is suppose to be hooked up? Thanks.

I found this

I did some digging around, and Dell uses proprietary plugs.
To fix power:
Connect up the PSU and everything.
Using a paperclip, touch two pins on the PWR_SW.
If nothing happens, proceed to next pair.
One of the pairs should start the computer up.Click to expand...

I have Dell Dimension 1100 desktop computer that is seven years old.

The computer is turned on 12 hours per day and is used on average three hours per day, mainly to send / receive emails, surf the web, use Word Office software and stream movies.

Last year it went very slow, but after a service and the insertion of an additional 1GB of RAM, it regained a reasonable level of performance. It now has I.25 GB of RAM.

My question is this. What is the average life-expectancy of this type of computer.

Sometimes Dell offers a trade-in deal in respect of old computers (provided that they are functional).

If I could estimate when my present computer was almost at the end of its life, I might be able to take advantage of such a deal.

A:What is the average life-expectancy of a Dell Dimension 1100 desktop computer

I'm sure Dell have some life expectancy figures, but not likely in the public domain , even with an average time you need to know the distribution of those figures

so 10 years - you could have 50 untits fail at 5 years and 50 units fail at 10 years , would give a number of 7.5yrs - which would not help you really

i would say seven years old is a quite old for a PC these days , the mechanical parts , harddrive may likely to failure

I assume you have all the data backed up anyway

Not sure you would get much of a deal from Dell - but with the deals available this may not actually save you anything

Staples often have great deals - also Curry/PCworld are doing deals over Easter

Not really an answer to your question though

I have an XPS 8700 desktop all stock bought a little over a year ago. Last night I turned it off when I went to bed. Today I turned it on and it will not go past the first dell loading screen. It freezes and I'm unable to press any buttons (F2, F12 etc) I put it a different hard drive to see if that was the problem but it still continued. HELP PLEASE??

A:Dell XPS 8700 Desktop, Freezes at dell loading screen unable to boot up.

Hi Mattmazz
Thanks for writing to us.
Please disconnect all the connectors and then hold down the power button for 15 secs, now remove the memory modules and put them back one by one and observe for any changes.
If possible please try another set of memory modules. If there is a separate graphics card, remove that as well and try the onboard.

My home desktop is connected to a wireless router through AT&T U-verse and it's broadcasting just fine. I can see the name and everything when I try and connect on my laptop but there is always an error that brings me to a troubleshooting screen. I've made sure the password is correct by going to Start-Run, IPCONFIG and then typing my IP address into the address bar in my browser. I dont know what else I can do, I feel like I've tried everything! Help please.

A:Laptop (Win7 Dell Inspiron 1525) won't connect to desktop (XP Dell) wireless router

Sometimes, you need to replace the router.
Sometimes, you can call your service provider and ask them to take a look on line to see if the subscription needs to be refreshed.
But often, all that is needed (despite the fact that it is a lot of work) is to uninstall your existing system, then reboot, and reinstall everything.
You might also find success by looking at your device manager in Windows to see if you have any grey, red, or yellow flags by any related device. That may show you have a permanent hardware failure if you cannot restore it, then you are off to the store or your provider for a new cable modem or router.

I have a dying Dell D610 laptop running XP Professional. I want to reformat/restore it, but I don't have the original OS disc (but I do have the original drivers/utilities disc.

But I DO have a legit Dell XP Home edition SP2 disc, with a key & everything (from my mom's Dell Desktop of about the same era as the laptop).

The question is now obvious, can I use the OS disc I have to re-do my laptop?

Thanks!

A:Can I Load My Dell XP Desktop Disc on Dell Laptop?

What do you mean by dying ? It would be senseless to reinstall, eg, if your HD was "dying".

As far as I know, an Install disk is not different for a desktop and Laptop. It will configure the OS based on the hardware you have on the laptop. Backup what you need from the laptop, and have at it.

I purchased a Dell XPS 8900 Desktop recently with Windows 7 Professional OP System pre loaded. The first thing I did was to make a list of the list of all system components, the date and version of each. Next I went to Dell's Web Site, enter the computer tag number, and created a list of all Dell updates for this computer. Then I downloaded and installed all component updates except the BIOS update which was the same version however there was no date listed for it.
I have experienced hang ups and freezes from the beginning of using this computer and I continue to have the same freezes and hang ups. With the number of complaints of the same problem regardless of operating system you would think Dell Management and sales would recognize that there is a legitimate problem with this computer and assign their engineers to research the problem and issue either a recall or a fix to XPS 8900 users. I am a long time computer professional with over 45 years in the IT community. I have always trusted Dell and recommended their products to family and friends as well as contacts in the IT community and prospective buyers. Dell can either acknowledge the problem with this product and take appropriate corrective action or they can ignore the problem which will not go away but the buyers of Dell products will when the word gets out. I no longer feel comfortable buying or recommending Dell computers to or for anyone.

A:Dell XPS 8900 System Desktop Computer "freezes and hangups".

I'm an IT person as well.  I'm seriously thinking of shifting my loyalty to another brand like HP.  This is outrageous that they are basically ignoring the issue, ignoring my emails and basically saying 'oh well' in the phone calls.

Go over to the HP forums if you think that it is any better over there.  Lenovo also has their forums. Then tell me it is all roses over "there".

Wasn't sure if this is the right category but I guess it's ultimately a question of hardware...

In case you don't want to read the whole background, my ultimate question is, Which power supply should I look to get to replace the dead one in the old unit?

I just moved into an off-campus house at college and the last homeowners left behind a lot of stuff, including what appears to be a functional Dell desktop PC. At least 10 years old, judging by the available ports on the MB and the other hardware inside. The unit is dead on its own, but I tried connecting the 20-pin part of my desktop's power supply to the old unit and the motherboard seemed to power up (light went on, CPU fan started).

The hard drive and CD-ROM drive didn't seem to power on, but I found what seemed to be a safety button (see first image) which I am guessing prevents those devices from powering on if the case is open. Can anyone confirm this for me? I want to know if anything else in this unit is dead, but it seems like everything was in great shape (not much dust, etc). I don't really want to pump more than like $50 bucks into this thing, as my goal was to use this PC as either a dedicated Linux machine or to host a web site (not expecting much traffic at all, and with FiOS Quantum 75/75 we have more than enough bandwidth).

The motherboard looks very much like the Dell OptiPlex GX260 SDT SFF Socket 478 (Image: http://attach.forum.ge/post-54-1270667615.jpg) although I cannot seem to find the exa... Read more

So over the past 2-3 weeks I kept noticing that my battery kept dying even though I would shut it down (yes window > shutdown) the computer with a full battery. The next evening I would power up and see that the battery was at 20% from full charge. This is a BRAND NEW as in <2 months XPS 9550. I checked my event log and WHAT THE H@#$??? It is absolutely filled with Dell Foundation Service and Dell Product Registration events all saying  " Power event Handled Successfully by the service." Clearly it is not.. The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer?

But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested.

About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used.

Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro?

I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop with Windows Vista OS. I have a Dell 926 printer interfaced to it via USB. Printer driver is installed and the printer does communicate at times with the computer and does a good job printing. However, intermittently when trying to print a document I'll get a message on the computer that says that communication has been lost and print job failed.

I've checked all connections to make sure they are solid and no debris that might cause this.
That has not corrected the problem.
The other thing that happens is that the document I want to print will stay in the print queue/spooler and if I shut the computer and printer down and restart both it will print the job. And it may continue to print jobs but it's just a matter of time.

Needless to say this is frustrating. I can print several jobs in a row with no problem and then I'll get this "communication has been lost between printer and computer". And I have to go thru the procedure above to get the last job printed.

My wife doesn't understand how this works and will try to print the same job several times with the commo problem and then complains when it won't print.....and then they all print when the above procedure is followed.

Any ideas what is going on??? Any fixes??

thus at least at this point not able to connect with my cable internet. Cable people told me I needed the drivers.Any suggestions or can it just not be done.

A:Loading Older Dell OS To Newer Dell Computer

You will have to go to the dell website look under support and then drivers and downloads for your model of computer. If you use the service tag number on the computer it will make sure you get the correct ones you need. For future reference so you wont have this hassle again burn all of the drivers to a cd so you will be all set the next time.

Thanks so much, in advance. You guys, and gals, are so great!

Take out the hard drive and put it in an external usb enclosure, you can get a cheap one for about $16.

Or put it into another desktop computer with a spare drive bay and hook it up as a slave drive.

Is the hard drive an IDE drive or SATA? If you're not sure, tell us the make and model of the Dell and we can look it up.

Power supply failure?
Have you made sure the power cable is correctly connected to the PC?
Tried a different power cable and/or a different wall outlet?
If you use a power strip, surge protector, or uninterruptable power supply, remove those and connect the PC directly to the wall outlet.

Have been trying to find a problem with the power turning off, all by itself.
Checked the power supply and power strip, both good.
I found out yesterday, that a Dell Rep. had changed the motherboard 2 months ago, which then led me to believe that maybe the processor heat sink was bad.
Removed processor and cleaned both the chip set and the processor, clean of old heat paste, and re-applied.
System stayed on for 2 hours, and she called me back and said it turned off 3 times within 5 minutes time.
I checked what I know about this, so I need your help to resolve this problem.
What I know about this PC:
Dell Inspiron 580's
Windows Vista opreating system.
2008 model
No extended warranty by customer
Dell techs can't fix problem
Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Hello Everyone. I've come to this forum for help with fixing my Desktop. It's a Dell Inspiron 545s. First of all, for some reason, I can't get a windows instillation disk to work in it. When I boot it, it starts saying windows is loading files, and after that, goes to a screen saying the system is booting in safe mode. After which it goes to the log in screen, I enter my password. It says "Preparing your desktop" for quite a while, and then goes to what apparently is the desktop screen, shows the mouse curser but the screen is black.

A:my dell desktop and compaq cpu

"No signal" onscreen error messages...generally refer to the graphics signal.  So I don't know how you can assert that the VGA is working.

First thing I would do is check all connections between the system and the monitor..

Next, I would try a different monitor...to convince myself that my graphics card/chip has not developed problems.

The computer was working a couple of weeks ago, and was left turned off. When I tried to power up tonight, nothing but beeps and blinks.

After I push the power button, the front panel light blinks steadily once per second, no pause. The computer beeps four (4) times, in sync with the blinking light, then pauses for two seconds -- no beep -- then it beeps four (4) more times, pauses, then four more beeps, etc, on and on. The monitor screen remains blank.

When I push the power button again, the machine quickly shuts down, the fan stops, the blinking and beeping stop. I DO NOT need to hold down the power button to shut down the computer.

Any suggestions?

I have read numerous threads about this topic; however, none of them seem to answer exactly what I would like to accomplish. I would greatly appreciate any help or suggestions, but please know that I am not nearly as computer savvy as most of the people on this site. The ?keep it simple, stupid? approach is what I need for this to work.

I have a new Dell XPS 8300 desktop still in the box with a HDD pre-installed with Windows 7. Since it was not a customization option at the time of purchase, I would like to install a new SSD to run Windows 7 and a few important programs that I will load in the future. There are currently no programs or data on the existing HDD that I need to transfer other than the OS and the drivers that I need to make the computer work. I would like to avoid messing with cloning and adjusting partitions if possible. Eventually, I would like to use the HDD as a secondary drive where I can load non-essential programs and store larger data files.
Based on what I have read on numerous threads, the following is the procedure I intend to use. Please let me know if I am missing any steps or if I am doing something that will not achieve the desired result.

1) Turn on computer with the HDD installed as-is and the SSD still sitting in the box.

2) Use Dell?s DataSafe Local BackUp to create a System Recovery Media on either a DVD or 8+ GB USB key.

3) For a belt and suspenders backup, next I was going to use the Windows 7 feature to create a sys... Read more

A:Install SSD with NEW Dell XPS Desktop

Do you really need or want to do a recovery? Why not just do a clean install to remove all the crap, and give yourself a chance to set the system up properly.

If you did, you could then add in your HDD, and format that to be a solid data drive, which i usually move mine to be D....and move the optical drive to be E...but that's just personal preference.

From what i know I am limited to 9.5" and the gtx i am looking at is 9.5" so I am cuttjng it really close size wise. If it does fit will it be compatiable with my computer with it running Windows 10? The last question is power supply. If I get the GTX 960 what type of power supply would be best? If the GTX 96p does not work ivam looking at a GTX 750 that should work a bit better, but I am trying to see if i can get a slightly better card then the 750. Hi - my dell optiplex 240 is using 95-100% cpu with 1 program, or sometimes no processes running. This causes it to run so slow it's become unusable. I've tried several ways to speed things up, including deleting programs, running CleanUp! and anti-virus software, starting in safe mode with/without networking and stopping services.

I'm including files as suggested in your instructions. I do not currently have access to the Windows disks. Thanks for any help or suggestions you can provide. - mestran

HI,
I have a Dell GX280 Optiplex slimline and I am in the process of a re-install of XP as I had some faults with it.
I have the official Dell re-install disc but I did not find this until I put an official Windows disc into the drive. The set up has got to the point where it is asking for the COA license number on the side of the pc but it will not accept this as it is already assigned to the pc via the Dell disc. I took the disc out and put the Dell disc in and restarted but it still gets to the same point and asks for the license number.
What I really need to do is halt the installation, re-format the drive and put the Dell disc in it as I know that this will work. I am not doing anything illegal here.
Thanks for any help.

I have not been able to find a fully customizable Desktop on the
Dell web site. Ex: They offer a 500 MB hd. I want a 1T hd. No option available.
Ex: I don't want windows 8. They offer window 7 and windows 8.
The option "NO" is not present on all choices. Ex: I don't want Windows Office.

Now the Precision desktop does allow some customizing but not completely.
All in all I am unhappy with Dells turn of events.

A:Dell customizable Desktop

Ex: I don't want Windows Office.

That's Microsoft Office, they also produce it for Macintosh OS X.
I looked at one Dell offering with Windows 7 at XPS 8700 Performance Desktop | Dell, some things had options.

One thing about Win7, Microsoft probably/likely is limiting sales to stock on hand so if a suitable machine is found it'd be best to get it. That applies to all brands/OEMs and maybe Custom builders.

I have an older Dell Dimension 4600 that suddenly stopped powering up. When I hit the power button, all I get is a flashing amber light to the left of the power button. I checked all my connections and all are good. I did a little research and I tried jumping green to black on the 20 pin mb plug, to see if any fans would run. Nothing. Also neither of my drive bays will open. I'm thinking it is possibly the power supply that has failed, but from reading online it sounds like it could also be the mother board. Can anyone walk me through any other procedures to narrow down the problem please? I don't have the extra $$$ to start randomly replacing components. Thank you in advance, John

Yes, the Dell Inspiron 3847 Mini Tower can use generic ATX power supply units, with either a 24-pin or 20+4-pin main motherboard power connector, with or without the on/off switch. You should be able to buy a compatible power supply from either a local or online computer store.Note: You require a power supply with four SATA power connectors.

Both the freezing and the audio problem could be caused by a bad power supply. Post the specs of your computer, particularly the power supply make, model and rated power output.

A:Dell desktop won't start up

I hate to just give you a link, but here is what I would do (see link below). I assume you have Windows 7. First off get your windows 7 disc, put it in the cd drive, and boot the computer to the cd. To do this you would press F12 (I think it is on Dell's, or whatever key it says for boot options) when it is first starting up on the first screen. Select CD drive.

Do this first (starting at method 2): http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...y-options.html

Follow the tutorial below.

Any suggestions on where to start?

A:Dell Deminsions Desktop Help???

Hi,
What's HRDD's ? (you mean the hard disks?)

From my experience, the only reason a hard disk won't take OS is if it is having bad sectors, what you should try, is connect the hard disk to another working machine as a secondary hard drive,
Install Speedfan , click on the S.M.A.R.T tab and check the following items :
Raw Read Error Rate
Spin Up Time
Reallocated Sector Count
Seek Error Rate and Spin Retry count.
If you a green "OK" next to them, then you should consider changing the SATA Cable, or perhaps try plugging the hard disk in a different SATA port. You should also try getting another Windows Installation Disc, even try to install it from a USB using a free program called WIn2Flash.

When I purchased this machine new in about 2007, it would not boot and dell sent a technician to repair it. He replaced something, could have been the graphics card, I do not remember and it has worked perfectly until about a month ago. Now it will not boot. I can hear the hard drive spinning but the monitor shows absolutely nothing. It could be the graphics card again and if so would you recommend a replacement. I only use this machine for business, No Games. I removed and replaced the ram but it still does not boot visually. That is why I think it is the graphics card.

However, since I am purchasing a new system, which main use will be for graphics, I am not sure which to choose, I've searched many forums and blogs, still can't get a result. Basically what I am seeing is that both computers are good however since HP's after sales service is much better than Dell's, then HP takes the lead. My old PC's still doing fine for me, fast and decent, but I want it faster now that all these new PCs are coming out. I also thought it'd be a good upgrade to something that can actually render quality videos from Adobe After Effects/Premiere, and it'd be a nice bonus if it could multitask applications.

It's 6GB RAM right from the get go so I'm thinking it's fine. What do you guys think? Total cost would be at $700 but it comes only with a default Intel HD graphics card. I like to play Civ 4/Civ 5 on this old PC of mine and I don't need super intense graphics like Crysis maxed out, but good-very decent quality would be fine with me.

My main goal is for it to render quality videos (doesn't have to be super HD godlike videos, but quality video that's around a level or 2 below HD would be expected), is it capable?

running xp pro media edition. Just had to have a new hard drive put in Dell 4600. I'm not an advanced user!!! The original desktop had a dell icon that had all the info about my machine, help topics and all the clicks to go for Dell help. Since the new install I can't find any of this. There is a file called Dell under documents and settings that has folders of drivers and some icons for support etc. but they are just pictures and I don't see any set up, install or anything. Does anyone know about this? Thank you very much.

A:Dell info on desktop

Did you use the original Dell disks to re-install? Is the Media Center a new version of XP that you purchased? The Dell stuff is specific to Dell installs, not something that comes with separately purchased operating systems.

Hello, I have a Dell xps 400 and have never had any problems to speak of. I tried to turn on computer and nothing. After checking all the obvious, I took side panel off and noticed a green light on the mobo. I have checked the power button and all cables, nothing. Replaced battery 3 weeks ago but had no problems after wards. I hope this is an easy fix and would appreciate any help. Thanks, oh, when I say no power, I mean monitor will not power up either.

A:Dell desktop won't turn on

The Dell power supply has failed... or hopefully not the motherboard. Try replacing the power supply first though

Hey,

I am running a desktop that freezes within 3 minutes of Windows XP and showing the desktop. Keyboard won't work and sometimes mouse cursor is able to move. I tried system restore, recovery console (which caused me more grief because it overwrote my Vista MBR), NOD32 scans, Ad-aware scans, Spybot scans, and ClamWin scans. I don't know how this happened. A few days ago, I came back to my computer from watching TV and it was frozen. I had to manually reboot with the button and it's been like this ever after.

D:\ is my Windows XP partition.

I have a Dell desktop and when the Dell popup told me I had problems with my OS and that I should install Winfix 2005 to resolve the problem --For Free--. Now it is looking for my credit card to complete the installation. I tried to quit by hitting the X to close, but it continues to pop up on the screen. I have even gone into add/remove software and removed the program, but it pops up again once on the Internet. I have tried this on 2 machines, 1 had AOL as the Internet and other is just the local cable company using IE to attach. How can I get rid of this annoying software?

Thanks,

Hello,

- I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right place; I hope so

My problem is

* I have a DELL Dimension 3100 (purchased in 2006).

* My Windows XP Home crashed (seemingly because of malware)

* I've installed another Windows - parallely - on my second HDD. It's only temporary solution: what I'm going to do is move all my data from C: and re-install Windows on my primary HDD

* I heard that Dell computers (including desktops) provide the "System Restore" option - restoring the operating system to the out-of-the-box state, from hidden partition.

* It doesn't seem to work though: I'm pressing Ctrl+F11 (I tried F11 as well) when the computer is booting up, but it doesn't do anything.

* I haven't found any "recovery disc", nor a Windows disc among the CDs I have got.
I'm not sure if the computer was shipped with anything of that sort (I can't remember), I have to assume it wasn't.

* I know that I can, and perhaps I should contact the Dell support, but I hoped I could get a quick answer here...

My questions, precisely, are:

1. How can I check whether I have this hidden "system recovery" partition at all?
(I've certainly never removed it, since until now I haven't even known such a thing may exist).

2. Do I need any CD to perform this System Recovery?

Thanks in advance for any help

A:System Recovery on Dell desktop PC

Hi,
Look under Disk Management to "see" if you have a Recovery Partition
You may not have one. In that case you will need your Dell XP CD

To use the PC restore:

Does anyone know if the new GTX 1080 card will have any issues with a Dell XPS 8900 Desktop?  Since the power requirements are lower the PSU should support it but I would like to verify before making an additional purchase.

A:Dell XPS 8900 Desktop and GTX 1080

Nvidia is recommending a 500w power supply. The GTX 1070/1080 will not be validated by Dell on any systems shipping with the 460w power supply. I am scanning the Desktop Video board waiting for users to buy and test the video cards on our 460w systems.

Hi all, i'm trying to upgrade my Dell Dimesnion 3000 Desktop (due to tight budget and being unable to buy a new computer) so it's able to play some more modern pc games (i.e. civ iv or civ v) but i'm not really much of a tech geek when it comes to computer hardware upgrades and i was wondering if you guys can recommend what i should get to upgrade the dimension 3000 best.
My PC Specs:
CPU: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.66GHz
RAM: 512 MB
Video Card: Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller
Sound Card: SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio
70 GB of Memory Available

Thanks!

A:Need help upgrading Dell Dimension 300 desktop

Well I hate to be that guy, but your PC really outdated. I understand being on a tight budget but upgrading that machine would cost much more then buying something a bit more modern.

The motherboard (Socket 478) will limit you to the older Pentium 4 CPUs.
You are also limited to DDR RAM and a PCI (not to be confused with PCIE) video bus.

Honestly it is not be possible to upgrade the machine to play Civ 5.

i have a dell 8300.. im planning on changing the CASE ... the dell uses a power suppply of 250 watts... the case that i want uses 420 watts.. if i change the case will my motherboard burn?

A:Dell 8300 Desktop burn?

Hi fro,

not burn, but the case fans won't shut off. Dell uses proprietary motherboards and power supplies you would have to change the motherboard too, or get an adapter. I googled it and found a couple of places that make them.

Hello I am having problems with a friends Dell Vostro 400 Desktop. She has Windows Vista Basic 32bit, 3 gigs memory.

The problem is for the last week her computer has been running high CPU'S and the fan goes crazy, but the memory stays low.

I just got off the Virus Malware forum on here and we did all the malware scans ect.. They pointed me here in hopes someone can now help me with the high CPU issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much.

A:Having a High CPU Problem On Dell Desktop.

Do the following in that desktop:

Click Start, then type MSCONFIG in the search or run box, then press the Enter key.

When the small "System Configuration" window appears, click the "Startup" tab.

Write down ONLY the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them.

If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list.

Make sure to spell them EXACTLY as you see them there.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Is that desktop running okay, speed-wise and performance-wise?

Which fan are you referring to that's "going crazy"?

I'm having a new hp desktop with vista delivered today but I bought it without office 2007 installed. However, I still have the reinstallation disk of office 2007 that came with my dell (with vista). Can I use the dell provided microsoft office 2007 software to install on my new hp or is there some sort of embedded identification that would stop that? Thanks.

A:Using dell provided software on a new hp desktop

If it is OEM software then it is only legal if used on the actual computer it was purchased with (not even another computer of the same make and model). So the short answer is, even if it is possible, it is illegal and thus not a topic for discussing on here.

I am trying to fix a computer for my girlfriend's mother so she can have a family computer in her living room so her family will stay off of hers, but that's beside the point. Anyway, what computer I am trying to fix is a Dell desktop, not completely sure the model of it at the moment (although if it is required I can find out). When trying to start the computer up, it says disk read error: 0 or something to that degree. I shut off all of the disk drives in the system setup and what do you know the computer started right up into Windows Vista. However, it randomly shuts off (it was doing this from the beginning before I could get it to boot into Vista). I have since deleted the partition and to install Vista from scratch like I was intending to do, however I cannot complete the installation before it turns off. Forgive me if I am posting in the wrong section, it's just there are a few things that are going wrong for this disaster I didn't know where to put it. Any suggestions? My thought is a hardware problem, but it could be something so simple to fix that I have been overlooking it.

Hello,
I have an issue with an insanely slow Dell desktop running XP. I had installed Revo Uninstaller, and ran the 'Evidence Remover'. After 24 hours, it seemed to have froze, so I rebooted. Since then, the slowness has been extraordinary to the extent where it is unusable. I have tried

- booting in safe mode (still slow)
- clearing the registry
- reverting to the system restore point

There is 768Mb of RAM. In the task manager, there is one system process that is showing 143K of memory being utilized, though this higher number is not present in safe mode.

How should I proceed from here?

Thanks so much.

It's some crazy reboot program in German that executed causing the machine to boot into some program that executs and then restarts the pc. , at first I could not boot at all then I got into system and restore and it will now boot. It would not let me F8 into safe safe mode. I'm running my paid version of malware bytes now. Would someone please walk me through getting this cleaned up so I create a good restore point. A:Dell dimension desktop hijacked

when you are at that screen, hit "CONTROL+ALT+DELETE" to bring up the Task Manager, then click on the "Applications Tab". Then Click On "New Task" then you have a few options...1) you can do a System File Check to repair all critical system files (including Explorer.exe), To do this once you click on New Task, type: sfc /scannow (note that this will require your windows disk...follow the steps and wait until it asks you for the disk)2) or you can Try to restore your computer using System Restore. To Do this once you click on new task, type: msconfig and then hit ok, then click on "System Restore" and pick a date when you know your computer was working properly to restore to. 3) or you when you click on "New Task" you can click "Browse" You can then browse through your folders on your computer and go into your C:/Program Files/ and then locate a program you want to run (possibly your virus scanner, or Spyware scanner).Hope that Helps!
