Please help. When I turn on my laptop using normal power button it opens up the boot/application menu. I sm unable to come out of it. This happened when I found a screen " a problem occurred so windows need to shut down to prevent damage to your computer.." I quickly turned off the system by pressing the power button. Now when I am turning on my system, it shows the boot/application menu.

Please assist as I did the following steps to access the BIOS, it hangs:1. Shut down the computer2. Press the "Recovery Button" NOT THE POWER BUTTON (A small round button with curve arrow sign which is located on the left side of the Power Button just next to the dust removal opening on the left side of the laptop)3. Selected the BIOS Setup and nothing happens. I cannot even choose the boot option. If I put a pendrive with ubuntu, It picks it up, but not the Windows pendrive. My original HDD has bad sectors and cannot clone it. Any Ideas on how to help me?

So when I turn on my lenovo u410 laptop I get this menu box up as seen below in a black background. I've played around with the menu and I get nothing. This has been happening for the past few days and usually it manages to get past this and start up normally. However today is the day it's decided to stay put and I have no idea what to do. This is very frustrating as I only bought the laptop less then 2 months ago. Please help!     It's windows 8 btw

A:lenovo u410 won't work. Boot menu/App menu pops up

Hi N_A,

Thanks for posting and welcome to the Lenovo Community,

I?d like to guide you in a way to try to set the HDD (Hard Disk Drive) inside the BIOS to be the first priority booting order so we will try to return the BIOS to factory default settings:

Step1: Please turn off the machine and then at the left side you can see the NOVO button which is the button with the curve arrow

Step2: Press on the NOVO button and then you will get option press on BIOS Setup

Step3: Please press on FN+F9 together and then press Enter on Yes option and then FN+F10 to save and exit and then press Enter

Hope the information helps. Let us know.

Regards

Soha

Just started happening this week.   It's stuck at the boot screen "lenovo".   I tried many different methods like removing battery, holding power button to reset, etc.  The *only* way to get it to boot is the remove memory card, and put it back.  Then it will boot up fine.     It might then boot fine for the rest of the day.  But then the next day (or after being shutdown for a while), it happens again so i have to remove memory card, put it back, etc.  What could be the problem here ?  I tried both memory slots.  So i don't think it's particular to one slot.

Hi, I just bought an L460 Thinkpad (14", 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SDD, core i5 6200U) without an OS, under a certain scheme for students and academics. I'm trying to install a Linux distro via USB. However, after pressing F12 and entering the Boot Menu, when I select USB HDD and press Enter, the Boot Menu prompt reappears. Making a selection here does not seem to have any effect, and thus I'm unable to boot from USB. Startup settings in BIOS: Legacy Only, CSM [Yes]. Would be grateful if someone could give some pointers as to how to proceed. Thanks,

My g580 ran out of battery while using it, and now it gets stuck on the lenovo logo. I tried a different hard drive which changed nothing, I've tested both hard drives on a different computer and they both work. However when I boot the laptop with no harddrive it will get past the logo go to a screen saying something about an unplugged cable then reset and get stuck on a blank screen.   If I plug in my windows recovery usb drive( and no harddrive) the the machine will boot normally and go to the windows installation screen. So any ideas on why a working harddrive would stop the system from booting? Also I've tried the whole taking out the battery unplugging it holding down the power key and then plugging it back in thing, did nothing.

I own a Lenovo G700, and I have heard that Shift + F2 will get you into the BIOS. It might work if all else fails. You can also call Lenovo support or search around a bit more. But in my case I have to use the hardware OneKey Recovery button to access it.

Hi,

I am just this evening having a problem. When I choose an option in some menus (e.g. right-click Desktop -> Properties, the Properties option stays there on the screen in front all of the windows - which is really annoying). To show you what I mean see the first attachment (Menu Problem.bmp).

I can get rid of it by changing the display resolution or colour depth (I then just change it back again). But as soon as I click on an option from the right-click menu or some programs like IrfanView (some programs for example Firefox don't have the same problem) it happens again. It does however only happen one at a time (once there is a menu option being constantly displayed it doesn't happen to another menu option until I get rid of the first one. The menus also seem greyed out until you put the cursor over it (see attachment two - menu problem screenshot 2.bmp).

So if anyone can help in any way I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

DoubleDave

A:Menu Problem - Selected menu option staying on screen

when is the last time you updated your video driver?

This also could be some menu effects gone wrong. Windows has some effects it can do by default, but other programs can add their own.

as an experiment - try the following:
- right click on your desktop and pick properties
- click the appearance tab
- click the 'Effects' button
make a note if which options are selected.

- UN check everything.
- hit 'ok' on both windows and they will close.

then test your menus and see if that solves it. If so - then I would reccomend updating your video drivers.

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

If you have tried FN+F2 when boot?
Or holding down Shift and clicking restart?
If those steps did not work either,  You might need to contact Lenovo Technical Support and have the system shipped to Repair Facility for BIOS Reflash.

Found this article but it is for the same model that has same issue like yours.

Hey everyone,

Does anyone know if it is possible to get a full screen menu screen instead of the standard windows start menu?

I want something similar to the linux gnome menu screen whenever I press my windows key.
I've already posted this question on the rainmeters forum but I think I should be looking for some sort of shell extension or possibly program it myself in .NET (any pointers on where to start? I have limited knowledge of .NET I suppose I should be looking at the windows API code pack...) or if it already exists some sort of third party application that does something similar so I can customize it to look like gnome.

My idea is to have something like this when I press my windows key:
It should have the standard start menu search function implemented.
I've already tried the omnimo rainmeter skin but this doesn't allow for setting the hotkey to the windows key nor does it have the standard start menu search functions implemented.

I should also disable the standard start menu when I press the windows hotkey.

Any ideas?

I currently have the lenovo x1 carbon 3rd generation, which I purchased last summer. Hours ago, I decided to restart my laptop, but it ended up getting stuck in the boot menu/app menu. I have tried pressing the esc button or doing the f9 f10 method in the BIOS menu, but nothing seems to work. Does anyone know how I can fix this? This really is wasting my time, as I have assignments due and finals coming up, and I am getting really frustrated. Thank you!

Now every time I turn on the laptop I'm stuck on Boot Menu / App Menu, out of the four options that are there I can only press setup, but I have no idea what to do in setup that may help. I can't get on my laptop at all this way and it's very frustrating :/

Hi all.  A few days ago the power ran down on my yoga to where it turned off while I was working.  I plugged in the power cord and powered the machine up again.  It only goes to this Boot Menu/App Menu screen.  I can get to the Startup Interrupt Menu by pressing enter.  From there I can enter the BIOS Utility, but am lost inside there.  There are 3 other options from the interrupt menu.  ESC = resume normal startup (takes me back to boot menu screen); F10= to diagnose hardward (ran full diganoses and everything passed); and F12=to choose a temporary startup device (takes me also back to boot menu).   The only thing that has changed on my computer is that I installed windows 10 last week.  It ran perfectly for 3 days, and only when the power ran down did this happen.  Would very much appreciate any guidance here.  Thanks!

A:Lenovo G580 screen goes white display

hi sameerjha28,
Welcome to Lenovo Forums!

?
You can try doing this:
-Turn off the computer.
-Unplug AC Adapter and remove the battery.
- Hold the Power button Down for at least 10-15 seconds, Then try reconnecting the AC adapter only and leave the battery out, turn it ON and see if it will make any difference.
- If it powered on Try it with the battery and check if it would still turn on properly.
?
If the above steps did not work Try an external monitor and check if it works there.

I would suggest Contact Lenovo Technical Support for service if the steps above did not help.

?
Hope this helps,

Im not native english speaker, sry if u cant understand some parts. Ill try my best to make my message clear so eventual will come easier.

This problem occurs for quite some time, its rather calm since few weeks when I downloaded shitload of new drivers and some other lenovo stuff but might be just coincedence. Since this issue doesnt want to go away itself I have to do something about it. I can send it to Lenovo for free service anymore so Id like to ask some experts if theres something I can do to fix this issue.

Some info:
- occurs usually while typing or other stuff, but few times my laptop literally went nuts and flashed black screens few times a sec, no matter if i touched it or not

- its not overheating, i bought cooling pad and it didnt help much

- can happen just after turning laptop on and not happen during 10h+ session

Thank you in advance.

Work through these Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 which will uncover most problems. Report back results as there may be other steps indicated.

Why did you install all of these other drivers? Did you already have performance problems or just create them?

Do you have a System Restore point still available before this problem began?

What else have you installed? Please post back as screenshot of Control Panel's Programs and Features after maximizing the page, using the Snipping Tool from Start Menu: Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums - Windows 7 Forums

I have a dual boot system. My system has two drives. On the first drive labeled 'C' I have Win7 and have it as the default boot drive. The second drive 'D' has Winxp and it is a backup OS drive and also for older games that don't do well under Win7.

Anyway I was reinstalling the Windows XP D drive from a Norton Ghost backup onto a new drive because the old drive was failing. I wasn't successful and I had to reconnect the old drive. When I did this my OS choice menu disappeared. Now the pc automatically boots into XP without asking which version of Windows, 'Windows 7' or 'Earlier Version of Windows,' I want to boot into.

How do I fix this? How I get the old boot screen back?

Thanks.

I have a Toshiba laptop running windows 7. It has been running like a well oiled machine since the day I got it.

I turned it off to watch TV, then when I turned it back on, the screen shows the Toshiba screen for about 1/4th of a second and then goes black.

If I hit F8, F10, or F12 nothing shows up. I have the biggest project of the semester due Tuesday so I really need some help.

I appreciate any help. Thanks.

A:Toshiba screen and then black screen only. No boot menu either.

How old is the laptop? It sounds like it's definitely a hardware problem. If it's still under warranty, I'd recommend sending it in. About your project, the only way to get that off of your computer is going to be to take apart the computer and plug the hard drive into another computer. You can buy an adapter (Laptop Hard-drive Bay to USB) for $20-40, they're smaller than a normal PC bay so you can't mount it inside a desktop computer.

Hello,
I am having problems with direct booting into Windows 8 installed into a VHDX file.
This is a four-partition UEFI boot on a GPT drive. EFI files are residing on a second partition of disk 0 (the ESP partition) in the EFI folder. The boot virtual disk is residing on the fourth partition of that disk 0.
When I turn on the PC, it shows black screen after the BIOS POST screen. No Windows 8 boot menu, no other information is displayed. However, if I press Shift+F12 (or F12) to start Dell BIOS Boot Menu and choose Windows Boot Manager from the UEFI part of
the boot menu, Windows 8 starts to boot without difficulties.
How do I make Windows to boot automatically without having to select Windows Boot Manager in DELL BIOS boot menu?
I believe I messed up with boot sector somehow... What needs to be fixed provided that Windows 8 will boot into VHDX file?
Thank you.

Well this is the world we live in And these are the hands we're given...

It means severe hardware failure. The problem is that the hardware could be almost anything; even a failing hard drive can cause this as it's probably trying desperately to discover and read the drive before allowing you to access the BIOS or continue with POST.

If this is a laptop, your chances of swapping hardware to fix this are slim, as you can only really replace the RAM or the drive, and either probably is not causing it. If it's a desktop, the problem is that we're looking a very wide range of hardware to swap, so you could working at this for a while and spending an unnecessary amount of money to fix it.

Given that this is an HP, your best bet is to check to see if the warranty is still active on it and then plea for a replacement. They will make every means possible to prevent you from doing so by skirting the issue, but be diligent and patient with them and you'll end up with a working replacement PC in your hands.

Hello!

I'm facing an issue with my Windows 7 desktop (currently typing this from a laptop, as the desktop is no longer accessible):

Basically, I was trying to get to safe mode to deactivate a graphics card (not important, as I never got the chance to do this). I tried restarting a couple of times and pressing F8, but instead of taking me to the boot menu, the screen simply went black (note that when starting my computer up normally, it works fine).

Thinking this was just a problem with the boot menu, I started my machine normally, accessed msconfig, and checked the box for Safe Mode under the Boot tab. The plan was to change this back once I was in Safe Mode and had made the necessary changes.

HOWEVER, now, every time I boot up my computer, it just goes to a black screen (my monitor actually just turns off, because it's not getting any signal). The computer's on, but apparently not displaying anything. And I can no longer boot in normal mode, because I changed the boot menu to always use safe mode.

Thanks for your help; any ideas on how to resolve this issue would be GREATLY appreciated

Hi all
Does anyone know if it is possible to

a) change the text on the Windows 7 boot screen in a multi boot situation from "Previous Version of Windows" to "Windows XP" for instance.

b) To actually password protect the menu so that only a certain user could boot into a particular OS .

I don't really want to use a 3rd party boot manager - but of course I suppose the other philosphy is if a user is not authorised to a particular application then why show it on the menu as a possible choice.

There should be some way of getting a logon prompt at boot and depending on the users privilege level display the boot options.

Another question -- On Windows 7 the XP partition is hidden (in Windows explorer).

On XP the Windows 7 system files are "viewable" as a separate disk drive. I like the hidden partition idea much better as the OS shouldn't be aware of the other OS.

This to me seems a not very good idea to allow the possibility of "tampering" with system files - especially by a previous version of an OS.

I could almost understand it if W7 showed the XP system disk but not the other way round.

Cheers

jimbo

A:Password protecting Boot screen menu and hide OS disk

Hello Jimbo,

This tutorial below can help show you how to change the OS name in the Windows Boot Manager screen to what you like instead.

Dual Boot - Change OS Name in Windows Boot Manager

I suppose that you could set it to where there are no automatic log ons for both OSs, and just not give the user an account in the OS you do not want them on. This way even they restart the computer, they will only have access to the OS that they have a Standard account in after they log on to it.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

My Notebook runs and boots fine, but I can no longer re-install the operating system from the USB installation media (I used the same installation media before, and had no problem with it). At the Start Menu this will always happen:1) After pressing F11, I will always get the same blue screen error message:"Your PC needs to be repaired. A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed. Error 0xc0000225." 2) After pressing F9, only two options appear (USB option is missing):OS ManagerBoot From EFI File At the blue screen error Menu:After pressing F8 for startup setting, the blue screen persists (it just blinks once). I did a comprehensive system test, and all componenets (including HDD) PASSED.

Ok, so I have Win. 7 Prof. and everything was going great until I installed Roxio Creator 2010 Pro. It was a clean install no problems there and the program works fine but now anytime I right click on any part of explorer or in the start menu it pops open a window trying to install roxio again. I tried to uninstall it all and see if that helped and it didn't. Still there. I've tried to repair the installation to see if that would help and it didn't. I'm at a loss. Please help.

A:Start Menu randomly opens

Hello @icepilot33?, Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues, with help from the community! I read your post about the Start Menu, and wanted to assist you! Did your notebook come with Windows 10 already installed?  Or did you upgrade to Windows 10?  Try disabling the TouchPad, and use an external mouse.  That way, you can narrow down if there is an issue with the TouchPad causing the Start Menu to pop up.  You can use this document to help you, if needed:HP Notebook PCs - Using the TouchPad or ClickPad (Windows 10) You can also try performing a Hard Reset.  After performing the reset, and using the notebook with the external mouse for a while, let me know if you are still having the issue. Please let me know if this information was helpful by clicking the thumbs up below.Have a great day!

I'm hoping that it is possible what I would like to achieve

First of all, I don't use the first screen when clicking on the Start button. I don't have a list of recent used programs, nor do I have anything pinned.

Selecting All Programs displays the screen with installed applications.

Now what I would like is to skip the first screen alltogether, so that when I click Start the actual list of installed programs is displayed. I could use the Classic start menu, but I like the Vista one.

Thanks for any answers

There is no way to do this in Vista by default that I know of. However, you might see if the free program Vista Start Menu may work as a workaround for you.

When I LEFT-click it on either Chrome or IE9 screen it opens a menu and does not allow me to type into any form. If I hold it pressed then I can type but the menu that appeared remains on the screen.
I've opened the mouse definitions under control panel and they are all OK.

Lately the Outlook on the computers at our office are doing the same thing. Out of nowhere an individual will open their Outlook 2007 program and it will go to the "startup" menu rather than their existing profile. You can close it and reopen it and still wants you to create a new profile. If you do create a new profile Outlook will lock up. I have gone in and changed it to ask for a specific profile in email options and that may work once or twice but eventually it will go back to the startup menu. Trying to open it is safe mode causes it to lock up. Eventually it will ask if I want to run a repair. 90% of the time this repair is ineffective. What I end up doing is removing office 2007 off the computer and reinstalling it. Then I create a new profile for the employee and then use data files to allow access to their old emails.
So far this has happened to 10 or 11 computers in the last month and it is driving me crazy as it is a long process. Does anyone one know why this is occurring? The computers are all on XP with Office 2007. The email is connected through POP3 to a offsite mail server (cpanel). Please help!

My daughter handed me the computer this morning saying, "sorry mom, I just tried to jailbreak my iPod". Ugh!

when I click start menu, nothing happens..doesnot open. All but 3 of my dsk top icons are gone. (Malwarbytes, Firefox, and the trash can). Tried malwarebytes but it doesn't finish scanning. Firefox gives me this message " Firefox is already running but is not responding. To open a new window you must first close the existing Firefox process or restart your system". When I right click the computer screen I just get a small rectangle box with some arrows.
If I try to ctrl alt delete I just get a blue screen. It seems like all words have disappeared from my computer.
I have screen shots of these things because they are hard to explain but I don't know how or if I can post pictures here.

Please help.

Hey guys, I'm pretty sure this is a virus. Before I even had this problem windows was acting up, saying that it couldn't load my user file(and everyone else's except for 1 person) and had to log into a temporary user account. I turned off my computer and turned it back on.

I nearly had a heart attack.
I logged in to see my start menu open up by itself and my mouse cursor move by itself over to the top program in my start menu- Google chrome. Google chrome never opened, and the start menu closed shortly after but I was very afraid. I plugged out my modem and router because I thought I was being hijacked over the internet.

I logged into a different account and it happened again, but this time the mouse cursor moved to the second application, which was Microsoft office outlook.

Malwarebytes found nothing, and neither has my antivirus which is rogers online protection

A:Start menu opens, and mouse moves at log in

This is getting more and more interesting...
It appears that the first user to log into my windows xp machine does not have the 'switch users' sounds. Other users can get the sound fine except for the first user to log in on startup.

I have not experienced the mouse moving or the start menu opening again, but this is very unnerving. On a sidenote facebook once gave me a 101 error message (using google chrome) and wouldn't load at all for a few minutes. I'm not sure if that's a problem with facebook or if I have a worm.

A:Program always opens minimized from context menu - 8.1x64

What kind of program is it? Generally in Windows I think it is always worth a try to use Open With to set another program to open a type of file, then change it back. It is low risk and may reload the switches to the program.

Other than that I would use a Registry Search tool to try to find the open with details for the program. Before attempting to poke around in the Registry it is a good idea to back it up first. If your System Restore works well than making a Restore Point should cover you. Or you can used a dedicated Registry Backup such as Registry Backup from Tweaking.com

Hello,

Having displayed the 'Welcome' screen during power-up, my computer (Dell D0926 Dimension 2400) then proceeds to my desktop (the picture that I chose, rather than, for example, a black or blue blank screen). There are a few egg timers, and the arrow is present, but no icons appear whatsoever.

I've tried a few things but none of the following seem to work. Ctrl-Alt-Dlt has no effect. Pressing F8 during start-up and choosing 'Safe mode' takes me to an option of going into either 'administrator' or 'charlie allen', but having tried both of them I end up in each case with a black screen with safe mode in the bottom two corners, but am unable to do anything from there.

I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help!

Many thanks,

Charlie

I was infected by Ransom Virus few weeks ago but i cleaned it. It is possible that I was infected by some other viruses during that time. But currently my system is clean as per SuperAntiVirus, Hitman Pro, McAfee, ActiveScan from Panda and many other virus scanners/tools including Rogue Killer, TDSS Killer etc.

Unfortunately, when I right click on a file or a folder on desktop or in Explorer, I receive the following error msg.
---
There was a problem starting
c:\Users\Jack\AppData\temp\svqtdic\sbntppt\wow.dll

A dynamic link library (DLL) initialization routine failed.
---

and context menu opens.

I believe that his is a remnant of a virus. Interestingly, right click on Desktop or sys folder like Libraries or Computer does not produce the error.

Earlier Hitman Pro had detected wow.dll as a trojan in Windows\Temp\sbsbprt folder (not in path mentioned in error msg) . When i tried to see in Temp folder, i could not see sbsbprt folder or wow.dll. I restarted in safe mode and shredded Temp folder with McAfee and then Hitman could not find wow.dll anymore.

I think that a virus changed Right Click functionality (like in a game where right click fires secondary weapon) by running a script/exe. I cannot find any help to reconfigure right click to its normal behaviour.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hello! I am a happy owner of Lenovo p50, but i got couple of questions. Firstly, Intel Xeon CPU E3-1505M v5 @ 2.80GHz should have a maximum clock speed of 3.7ghz, but thats not the case. The higher i see it goes is ~3.4ghz. I use Piriform Speccy. I tried some CPU stress tests etc, but the result is around 3.4ghz max clock. The Second question is why my bios menu is all greyed and i cannot change any setting. Yesterday i upgraded the BIOS to the latest N1EET60W (1.33 ) and today i tried to visit the BIOS to check some CPU related settings, but i found that almost every setting is locked and i cannot access it. It might be a security mechanism, but before i enter the menu i got promted to scan my fingerprint so i guess that should be it.

Hi

I wondered if anyone out there has had a similar experience to me...

For some weeks now I have had problems where the START MENU wouldn't launch, metro apps (OneDrive, Tweetium, Money, News etc) would fail to launch (just a blank window up), right mouse clicks wouldn't work, internet browsing slowed up...
Signing out of my windows account then back in again solved it... FOR A WHILE. After an hour or two gradually (one app after another etc) the same problems would occur.
Researching this, I came to the conclusion that Windows 10 was corrupt (or at least my user profile was) and a re-install was necessary. OR I also read of compatibility problems with Windows 10 in my AV software (Kaspersky Internet Security 16.0.0.614) and wondered if the problem lay there.
Yesterday I uninstalled Kaspersky and relied on Win Defender. For 2 days now (unprecedented recently) my laptop has behaved impeccably, no problems as above.
So, am I to blame Kaspersky? Am I safe with Just Win Def? Any other AV suites throwing up problems? Any Kaspersky users with any experiences to share?
Thanks!

Hi, I'd like to add a context menu entry to the default set
Open/Open all users/Explore/Explore All users/Sort by Name/Rename etc
which appear when you

right click on a folder in an expanded Start menu (after 'Programs).

Technically, the 'folder' is a 'file folder'.

But the normal set of file folder context menu entries is suppressed by Windows in this instance.

Thus normal additions to the context menu set associated with 'anything' or 'file folders' or 'directories' never affects this set (so far).

I can add context menu entries which appear when I right click on a shortcut, but NOT folders.

I've tried Fast Explorer, and a couple of other utilities.

'Sort By Name', 'Explore All Users' are not in the registry. (Normally context menu entries appear in one of about 6 locations).

Ideas welcome!

Background: I want to do this 'cos I want to keep a 'bad' context menu entry that stops explorer running from this context menu (some programs do that, alas, thus you can't right click, explore the start menu once you install them and their context menu). Normally I have disabled such entries using Shellex View.

So I want to add one which uses a different file manager.

Thanks!

A couple of weeks ago (well maybe 10 days ago) I turned on my computer to see that the desktop was nothing but the photograph background I usually see. My icons were gone! Taskbar, Start Menu, too.

I tried CTRL-ESC. Didn't work. I tried to run explorer.exe. Didn't work. I can't even access Control Panel (control.exe). I don't have malware or a virus (though I did just do a big clean, but only the speed of my computer improved; I still have to run all my programs through Task Manager), but I think the damage was probably done by a virus or trojan.

I've tried the Fix on Kelly's Korner. I've tried looking at Microcoft's page for help, but I can't find anything. I even tried copying the explorer.exe file from my machine at work and putting it in place of the other explorer file (I kept the original, though renamed it). Nothing has worked. I'm fed up and don't want to have to do a clean install. Can someone help me?

I have RA2 installed but have to alt tab out and back in again to see any buttons. If I want to go to the internet on RA2 I have to click where I know the button is, alt tab out, go back into RA2 and it will appear. Almost like I need to refresh the screen by alt tab'ing out.

Tried both CD and MP install from the official RA2 XWIS servers. Compatibility tried, and running as admin.

No results, a bit stumped.

Almost all computer users need to restart, shut down or hibernate their systems at some time and doing all these things were easy enough in previous Windows versions such as Windows XP, Vista and 7. But suddenly Microsoft introduced Metro UI in Windows 8 and removed the Start button and Start menu from Windows 8. Although you can get start button and start menu back using this tutorial but that's a different thing. Many Windows 8 users are facing problems in getting used to this new Metro UI and Start Screen and the most difficult part of this new interface is the missing power options. There is no direct option given to restart, shut down, hibernate, sleep your PC.In this tutorial, we'll tell you how to add a new cascading menu in Desktop context menu (right-click menu) which will provide easy and direct access to all following power options: Lock Log Off Switch User Sleep Hibernate Restart Shut Down Shut Down (Hybrid)More info at the link: http://www.askvg.com/add-cascading-menu-for-restart-shut-down-hibernate-and-other-power-shortcuts-in-desktop-context-menu-of-windows-7-and-8/

Hey it's been a while since I've last been here, I really enjoy this Win 7 community hope everyone is doing well.

Anyway let me cut to the chase, basically I want to be able to remove the MagicISO context menu from the right click context menu in Windows 7.

See pics to understand what I'm talking about.

Even after unchecking the "Enable Shell Integration" (see picture 3) option in MagicISO Maker, it still shows up, and when I open the program again the check box is still ticked for that particular option.

I know I never had any issue in Vista or XP, but in this version of Windows it seems unable to work.

I looked on the http://www.magiciso.com website for an update to the program but there doesn't seem to be any at the moment. I've got the latest Build 0281.

Call me a "control/neat/OCD freak" who wants and needs everything in his life to be almost perfect ! LOL but really, I just like my right click context menu to be nice and tidy. I don't use MagicISO that often and when I do I do all my work within the program. Therefore I don't need the MagicISO option to be present.

Anyway I hope my issue is clear, perhaps I would have to modify the registry or something ?

Thanks for all your help I appreciate it !

Jordan

Hello Jordan,

You can use either ShellExView or ShellMenuView to make disabling that context menu item easy.

Hope this helps,

I upgraded from Windows XP to 7. I have "menu command" and "menu pop-up" sound effects set but they are not working for the Windows 7 start menu. They used to work for XP. It was helpful to hear a sound effect whenever a menu expanded or item was pressed in the start menu. I know this may be a minor problem, but can this be fixed in a future patch or service pack?

I guess this is best explained with images, so here's what I want. (If possible of course).

So in this screenshot you can see my Start Menu, notice that some of this icons (Steam, Curse Client and Origin) have an arrow next to them? When you hover, or click, with the mouse the Task menu opens up.
What I want is to add an icon of Microsoft Office and make it so that the arrow is there too (just like Steam, Origin and Curse Client) and make it so that when I click or hover the Task menu will appear, and on the list will be MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, etc
I would like to know if it's at all possible and if so how can I do it?

Any help would be appreciated.

I have lost some items from my start menu or the one that pops up when you hit 'start' at bottom left of screen.
I have lost the menu item 'recent documents, and have lost the drop-down menus from both the items, 'My Documents' and 'Control panel'. The 'recent documents' also had a drop down menu.
The drop down menu used to appear where the arrow is, in the picture I have included with this post and also to the right of the menu item 'control panel'

Hi,
I have created and pinned some personal folders to the start menu. They now appear on the left hand side of the start menu, along with the other applications.

Here are my questions:

1) How can I set up those folders so that they would appear with the little arrow on the right that will allow me to see the content of those folders as a menu, instead of having to open them as Explorer windows?
I would like to do that instead of using the "pull up" option in the taskbar.

1a)How can I change the name of a folder pinned to the start menu without changing the name of the real folder?

2) Is it possible to create personal folders to insert on the right hand side pane of the start menu? (to appear under the system default folders called "pictures", "music" etc)

Thank you for any advice on this.

A:menu view of personal folders pinned to start menu

1.) You should be able to right click the folder and select "view as link" or "view as menu"

1a) Not sure if you can do that.

2) It is not possible to include personal folders on the right side of the start menu.

This problem started just last night and I've gone through a series of possibilities, and I'm pretty sure I've ruled out it being the Video Card, at this point I'm assuming it is the Hard Drive, but I wanted to get an opinion that has actual value rather than my own >.<

Last night I shut down my computer via start menu and went to turn it back on and when I did the screen went blank/black after the "boot menu" (not 100% sure what that menu is called, its where its kind of blue (i have an hp) and you can hit Esc, F9, F10, F11). After that happened I figured oh well maybe it just loaded wrong, so I shut it off, now when I hit the power button, rather than having to hold it down, I just press it once even lightly and it just shuts down completely. Normally when you hit it you have to hold it down to shut it down completely (or so I think).

Now I'm currently using an 'Nvidia GeForce GTX 260' video card, I swapped that out with a working one which was an 'Nvidia GeForce GT 520', not 100% sure if the 2 were compatible or not, but it fit and everything ok. Computer still did the same thing with the other video card. I didn't try the current one (in the broken computer) in the working computer, to rule it out completely. I just assuming that was the cast, besides it wouldn't fit in the other computer, or didn't have some of the cords.

Which is why I came to the assumption it is the Hard Drive, A; (as... Read more

A:Problem with computer going to black/blank screen after "Boot Menu"

See if you can boot off something like Hiren's Boot CD and then run a hard drive diagnostic tool.

That will rule in or out a hard drive problem. It could be that your Windows system files got corrupted and maybe you could fix by doing a repair of Windows from a Windows 7 dvd.

I am working on a Dell model : DCSLA

When I go to boot up I get the black screen with the Dell logo in the middle and the two options in the upper right corner to either "F2" for setup or "F12" for boot menu. I cannot get it to do anything else. It will not read from a restore disk or hirem's restore utility disk either.

I have checked the ram and it seems to be ok. It had two 1gig chips and two 512gig chips. While I am working on it I took out the two 512's.

I am thinking it might be a bios issue but I am unfamiliar on how to reset or fix that. I have tested the hard drive and it seems to be ok. I have a usb cable that allows me to work on hard drives via the usb cable and power supply on my own computer. So far I haven't done anything but look at the drive and it seems ok. The computer should still boot up to the bios without a hard drive.

Can anyone help me in this matter? Can I reset the bios or reinstall then somehow? I don't want to be messing around where I don't know what I am doing.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I do however see some jumpers on the motherboard. One is marked "clear pw" and the other is marked "clear cmos". Could this have something to do with it.

The computer doesn't have much in the way of information on it except the sticker which certifies it for Windows Vista Home Premium and of course the product key. The only thing it says in the way of model is # DCSL... Read more

My Start button's context menu has double entries. It either happened when updating from Win8 to Win8.1 preview, or from Win8.1 preview to Win8.1 official release, though I'm pretty sure it was the former. Where does Windows contain the entries for this context menu so that I may prune duplicates and possibly reorder them to my liking?

In 32-bit I can also add folders/shortcuts to Start menu at ...

I think the only thing that will work here is a registry hack.

By default if you set the start menu properties to display "favorites" it does so by a menu. It does not give you a choice to display this as a link or a menu like it does for other folders.

Is there a way to fix this?

A:Display Favorites as a link not a menu in Start Menu

Drag it on to the start menu ( left hand pane) and pin it and it will open up in a new window when clicked.

Sorry i know its not what you want but its the only option i know.

The win 7 start menu download folder item on the right sorts by name. This is very annoying. I cannot find a download unless I know its name. If by date I just look up a recent download at top of list.

How do I change behavior so downloads in start menu (right column) sorts by date?

NB. I changed the folder properties in explorer so the download folder sorts by date. It does there no problem. But not in the start menu.

I actually have no beef with the Win 8.1 Start menu, but the colors of the regular desktop environment are killing me. Namely, the weird, off-off white of the menus. The High-Contrast White option under Personalization gives me the right color for the menu backgrounds but everything else about the theme screams windows 3.1
Is there maybe a registry tweak that I can use to change this one little color? I've tried a few things but nothing so far has worked.

See attached pic to see what I'm talking about.
Any help would be greatly appreciated -- thanks in advance!!

We have a custom application which users are used to launching by right clicking on the start menu and selecting it from there.

We have made this customisation in both XP and Vista by adding an entry in:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell

However when I try to do this in Windows 7 nothing appears.

The only item that appears are the default windows items:
"Properties" and "Open Windows Explorer"

Any ideas if we can actually do this in windows 7 or is there another location in the registry this kind of thing is read from?

I've never tried this, so I don't have back-up on this.

I doubt this could have been changed in Windows 7, since it is used for other options. I've added my own options, but when right-clicking files only. It is only an assumption, though.

I'll check on this.

Hello All,

When I click on the search button in the start menu of WinXp,
or when I use the search item in the context menu, it doesn't work.

Nothing happens and I have to wait about 30 seconds
before regaining control over the computer
(the start button remains in the dark state, and nothing reacts,
except the task manager)

Searching does work if I use the Search button in Windows Explorer.
It also works in safe mode.

Reinstalling the search assistant does not help.

I also checked my computer with adaware, spybot and some AV-programs,
but that doesn't help either.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks and Have a Great Day,
