Accessing Foxpro memo fields

Q: Accessing Foxpro memo fields

I have an older application that will be replaced. The old application uses foxpro tables. Data is stored in DBF files with memo fields in associated FPT files.

I'm trying to get the data into an excel file for import in the new application. The "regular" data in the DBF files doesn't pose a problem; but how can I access the memo fields in the FPT files and import them in excel ?

I have a corrupt FPT file that I cannot repair. The DBF that is associated with it has 52 records of information. Ive pin-pointed where the corrupted fields are. I have a memo field with the name mplacement. There are exactly 4 so called corrupted records in the mplacement field. The corruption starts at record 18. Records 18 21 seem to be the corrupted ones. Records 1 17 seem to display information correctly. When I export the information from this DBF into an XLS, it only goes to record 17 and then quits, leaving the rest of the records out. When I open the FPT with a Hex Editor, the data displayed ends with record 17, like there is no more data.

Here?s the tricky part. When I open the application and go into 4 records (other than the 4 corrupted ones) and enter data into that mplacement memo field, it magically fixes the FPT and I dont get the Error 41, Memo file is missing or invalid anymore. When I open the FPT back up in a Hex Editor, it shows me records 1 17 and my newly added data for the 4 entries at the bottom. I still can?t seem to recover all of the data from the memo field from records 18 52. Ive got backups (at the time of corruption) of the DBF and FPT so I can try anything. Any help is much appreciated.

Retaining formatting in memo fields (reports)

I am being passed an MDB file from a back end system that uses SQL server to store information. The conversion of SQL-server to MDB seems to work well except when I encounter a memo or text field containing what I believe to be CR/LF characters.

Many of the fields in the database are Memo fields and hold 'verbal' responses that will comprise of up to 2000 characters.

The problem that i am having is that the memo fields seem to be substituting carriage return/linefeed for a strange square character and when I use the memo field in a report I lose all formatting of the input data.

The result is something along the lines of

This is a list of data items

Item one
Item two
Item three

When I include the memo field in the report I get something along the lines of

This is a list of data items[][]Item one[]Item two[]Item three[]

The [] indicate the square I actually see in the text.

How can I convert the square character back to a CR/LF ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

In DOS-based Alpha 4, a database I've been using for years, text fields were limited to about 250 characters, but a memo field, stored separately from the rest of the record, if I understood this, was possible with far more space.  In migrating via Excel from Alpha 4 to Access, I seem to have lost the contents of the Memo field.  Does anyone know the filename where such fields were stored, perhaps dependent on the original table name to which they apply?  I do not think there were any such files with the .dbf extension, which constitute tables typical for databases.  I imported all files with that extension, and there were only 2, the 2nd a set of "child" records related to the first.  Any hints on where to look and how to re-attach this information would be appreciated.  I'm presuming some key field in common, of course, but don't know which of the many files in the old collection of such (that orchestrated all the database functions) is the one to try to import into, perhaps first, Excel, and then into Access.  Thanks for any help offered. (One thing I'll be trying, not done yet, is to just look for large files, regardless of extension, and snoop to see if I can tell what they contain.)

-Report generated for records Containing many Memo-Type Fields.

Reports are fine when Printing from Access, However Using Publish It with MS WORD or Save As/Export... Commands prouduces an RTF file with many memo field values truncated (Records with larger amounts of Data)

There seems to be no set limits to number of Characters (256, 512, 1024)

I've tried using the free support Site (Knowledge Base) And have not found an Adequate Answer.

I am trying to create links to specific locations with each document between two documents. The document names will change. I can update the current name of the other document by creating a custom property called "otherDoc". I have solved most problems, however, I am unable to insert a field into the address of the link (to make the link dynamic) without utilizing the showfieldcodes command (which is very memory and time consuming since the documents I am working on are very large). Below is my code. I was wondering if there is any way to set the address as a field? Or somehow input an address and it would be understood by word to be field.
Sub link_to_other()

'pastes hyperlink to the other document
Selection.PasteSpecial Link:=True, DataType:=wdPasteHyperlink, Placement:= _
wdInLine, DisplayAsIcon:=False

'selects the hyperlink that was just inserted
Set myField = Selection.PreviousField

'creates variables
Dim temp_address As String
Dim temp_subaddress As String

'sets variables
temp_address = ActiveDocument.CustomDocumentProperties("otherDoc").Value & ".doc"
temp_subaddress = Selection.Range.Hyperlinks(1).SubAddress

'changes the hyperlink the the dynamic value
Set SCut = ActiveDocument.Hyperlinks.Add( _
Anchor:=Selection.Range, _
Address:=temp_address, SubAddress:=temp_subaddress)
End Sub

Hi all,

I?m really in need of some help from some Access experts! I?m a newbie to Access, but I got myself busy with quite a big project... I?m trying to map out the product supply to shops in the whole country. I?ve come quite far for a starter, but I keep having 3 questions, it would be great if you could help me with this!

I have, amongst other tables, two tables called Stock_counted and Reported_quantity.

The table Stock_counted has the following fields:
- Shop_number
- Product_code
- Quantity_counted

The table Reported_quantity has the following fields:
- Shop_number
- Product_code
- Quantity_in
- Quantity_lost_or_returned
- Quantity_out

1. What I would like to do is to make it one table based on Shop_number AND Product_code. So in one record I would like to have Shop_number, Product_code, Quantity_in, Quantity_lost_or_returned, Quantity_out and Quantity_counted. How do I do this, making sure that the quantities end up behind the right product and shop? It is possible that some shops don?t have all items, while other shops might not have all products reported, or both. On top of that, I have another table with a price for each product, which needs to be related to it as well.

2. It happens that some products are found more than once in one specific shop and therefore appear more than once in the table, with the same shop number and product code. How do I automatically SUM these quantities, so that this product only shows up once per shop?

It really sounds like form A and subform B are both using the same table, and are not a Master/Child field link situation. But rather, form B (the subform) will have code in the "On Current" event that will find the current record on the form B within the form A, therefore allowing that record to be edited. Review your original post, I think you used the "B" one place where you meant to say "A". No matter what, you need to clear up with us out here if both form A and form B are using the same table.

MS Access:
I have several fields in a form that uses two tables. I would like to set up a command button so that when you are on a current record, it will copy the field information from the record you are on to other fields in the same record. I do not know the SQL commands to set this up.

For example, there are name fields, address fields, and phone to be copied. Reason: One is contact information; one is survey information. In most cases the information is the same but on rare instances, the information needs to be entered (when different).
This is not an update for all records in the database. This is based individually on each record.
Not sure if you need to do On current, on click, or after update.
Not sure if default value in form can be used.
Please help.

Click on the entry in start menu or on the desktop to run HijackThis
Click the "Scan" button, when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.
Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.
It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,

Good day all,

I'm having some issues getting a combobox to work with a memo field.

Master repository (table) = my data warehouse
Main (form) = drives data to Master Repository
Verbiage (table) = document types list in combobox on form Main. One of the 3 fields retrieved by the combobox, [Body], is a Memo field containing formatted wording to be used to generate a printed letter.

The combobox will return the correct field/data upon selection but it truncates the information in that field. I read that there might be some sorting and like field issues but I haven't been able to fix or work around the issue yet. Suggestions are greatly appreciated

Perhaps there might be other ways to achieve what it is that I would like to do. What I am trying to do is create the ability to generate a formatted letter hub of sorts. These are one-off letters that are produced at the time of data entry that will use information from the current record and from several tables.

A:Memo field

How many Characters are you trying to display in the Combo from the memo field?
There is a 255 character limit for the columns of Combjo box fields.
You can however display those characters but then use the whole of the table field's data by using VBA code to retrieve the data either using dlookup or a recordset.
Or if the user needs to see all the data you can use an unbound memo field to display the same data in full.

So as you can tell from the post count I'm new here. But from some of the threads i have seen already thought id bring my problem to you guys. A couple of days ago my physical memory just jumped up out of no where. It used to idle around 10% when i wasn't doing anything, but now its around 35%. Doing every day tasks i don't notice it too much but when i play games i do. And to make things worse along with this problem when i play this game, Smite, my pc often like to just shut off. I don't mean shut down... just power down. Its a lap top. I don't know much about computers, still learning. But from what i have read the shutting down thing seems to come from something overheating? It has only happened while playing video games.

I previously saw this thread, 'sluggish pc, high-physical memory, svchost', and took some advice from it. Such as running cleanmgr.exe, deleting temp files (from start search - %temp%), ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, ran SUPERAntiSpyware, as well as turning off several things under the startup tab in msconfig

Other then that the only other thing i have done, i thought it was my video card at first. And i went to the NVIDIA Control Panel from the 'Control Panel' and got the error "You're not currently using a display attached to a Nvdia GPU". But went to their wed site and downloaded new drivers and fixed that error.

In any case here is my info. Any advice or help would be great. ... Read more

I have deleted an important voice memo off my iPhone 3Gs which I had not previously backed up on itunes (stupid I know). I have downloaded iPhone explorer and found a file recordings.db could this be my missing file and how do I listen to it. So far I can't open it at all. Is there any other way to get my memo back?

A:Deleted voice memo

That .db file is a SQLite database, which you can edit and view using free tools. Download one of those tools—the SQLite Database Browser—and install it on your computer. Open up the sms.db file, and click on the Browse Data tab.

I don't think this contains sound files from what I have read. It looks like all the .db file will tell you is the numbers that were called, etc.

I think you are in trouble because you have deleted them without a backup. If you had backed them up they are stored here via sync :
My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Voice Memos

Since that is not the case you might try looking in this directory using Iphone explorer.

Currently the code column is being used as the data for a combo on a another table using a lookup on a textbox. I am new to windows 8 - i got a new laptop with it so it wasn't my chocie
Among many things, there is one thing that makes me cry. Lack of those sticky notepads on the desktop. I always had them in windows 7 and I really miss them and I can't find anything like that for Windows 8.
I downloaded several apps for that from windowsstore but they don't allow you to 'stick' them on normal desktop. They work only on that weird desktop and you have to enter the app to see your notes. Not very usefull.
So I was wondring if anyone here can help me with that
Is there any way you can have a sticky notes on normal screen, just like in windows 7 ?

A:sticky memo note pads

exactly what do you use the sticky notes for? there are many to do apps in the Windows Store. as well as more traditional sticky type notes. for many of the apps, you can pin the stickies to the start screen. you don't have to launch the app to see the notes.

for a to-do list, I have a very basic one called to-dos. it's very small and light but it let's you see your to-dos from the start screen without opening the app.
there are lots of them out there but this one does what I need so I just kind of stuck by it even though it is very plain.

for sticky note type apps:

I like Sticky Tiles. You can have either a small tile or a full size tile for your sticky. It lets you do multiple colors as well as multiple styles. And the pins look great on the start screen. The only negative I saw was that once you choose your sticky's size, you can't later change it. You can only choose the size of the sticky at the creation of the note.

Memo Stick is pretty good. it has a cork board screen to pin multiple stickies of different colors. and then you can also pin these stickies to the start screen. not only does it let you pin individual stickies, but its main app is a live tile that'll rotate through your stickies. the only negative is the font for the pinned stickies on the start screen can be too small depending on the resolution of the screen.

there's task which has a single screen that looks like a cork board where you pin stickies to. but there's no start screen stick... Read more

I am currently using Microsoft Access 2002. I wanted to know if there was a way for me to append an entire column from a table into a single memo field.

I am trying to make a distribution list memo field in an access table. I wanted to grab an "email address" column to upload into this memo field. I could reference the memo field later on when I send emails from Access.

Is there any way to do this?

A:Microsoft Access - Appending Table To Memo Field

First, you don't really give enough info: is this a one time append or is this for continuing functionality in a form?

If it is the latter, what you would probably need to to is create a list box that populates all the email addresses in your database. Then, based on which items in the box you chose, you could loop through, using vba, and create a string value. Once you have the string with the email addresses, you would commit that to your memo field.

Hope this helps,

In our transcription business we type hundreds of memos in a month's time.

I want to create a drop-down list (intended for validation) so my typists can select 1 of 15 names instead of manually typing each author's name each time.

I followed instructions in Word Help to create a drop-down list in a template but I can't find out how to get the drop down list to appear for use in the template. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is my first time using this forum.

Good Morning,
First time posting here but have been helped just by browsing so thank you all.
Have a major problem-here goes
We use Visual FoxPro 6.0 and are pier to pier-7 computers (big no no) but no funding for dedicated server yet. We recently replaced 3 old computers with new that run on Win 2000. The computer we look at runs on Win95. Problems started after installation of new computers.
When entering sales orders, We often get "fatal error" messages steming from sales order lines that immediately kick us out of the system. Re-indexing is only a temporary solution. Our support people cannot find the problem.
I'm desperate because in spite of this we have to keep working.
Is there a fix for this??
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm using the following code to zip files from foxpro using powerarchiver as my zipper, I'm having problems with any paths that have spaces even though I am trying to pass quoted paths, any ideas?

parameters filetozip,ziptoname,zippassword

filetozip = '"'+filetozip+'"'
ziptoname = '"'+ziptoname+'"'
if zippassword != ""
zippassword = '-s"'+zippassword+'"' && putting the -s part in here stops it failing when no password is passed.
run C:\PACL\PACOMP -a -c2 -w -q &zippassword &ziptoname &filetozip

it works fine as long as there are no spaces in the paths passed but this is not good enough for my needs.

We have data that was in a proprietary software package that looks like it used Foxpro as it's backend.

When you launch it, it asks for a password then says the password we have has expired. The company that did this $300,000 project for us is not longer around and no one can access the data.

Does anyone know a way to get the data imported into another program? An example of the files is .cdx and .dbf files.

A:Old Foxpro Data

You can import into EXCEL via Data/Get External Data/New Database query (maybe worded differently depending on Excel version).

Using MS Access Import or Link a new table, and choose ODBC as "Files of type" choose the foxpro driver. For DBF look for Dbase instead

both have option for the Dbase driver for ".dbf" (Excel can open a .dbf as well)

Not sure if Foxpro (access does) will let you do this, Create a new Foxpro database and see if you can import the objects....tables,forms etc.

Just been out today taking some shots of the flooding in our valley. I seem to come across a common problem which I will describe as follows:

One shot will turn out with very nice bright foreground and bright fields but the dark, moody clouds turn almost white too - ruining the shot.

The other will come out with a great, dull cloudy sky but the fields and foreground are too dark to make out details like farms etc - again ruining the shot.

I can't get no happy medium. I use a Panasonic DMC FZ-5 and although it is no digital SLR it does me well for what I can afford.

Is there anyway I can correct my shots afterwards? Is this what HDR does?

I have taken two shots at different settings, one with perfect clounds and one with perfect fields. Can I correct the photo and blend the two problems?

Hope this makes sense!

After restarting my PC a dozen times without solving the problem, I decided to check the running processes whenever the PC went sluggish again. So I ended it's task, but within an half an hour it returned. I ran a virusscan and an adaware scan in safemode after I updated their definitions, but they didn't find the problem. For the past week or two I have noticed random graphics issues in World of Warcraft -- screen freezes for several seconds then flickers and then leaves artifacts on the screen and then eventually things like water areas turn black and it gets too annoying to play.  Close the game and open it again and it starts out good again but within a short time (maybe 5-10 minutes?) it starts all over again.  First thought it was the game as obviously they are going through lots of patching with the new expansion but have not found any mention of others with this issue in the forums so far. So I found that Lenovo had thier LSC tools and installed and ran the hardware scan --- turns out my GTX860M is failing the memory tests.  But the tool does not say WHY or in WHAT WAY --- just gives a code to send in to support but my laptop is a few months out of warranty apparently so I thought I would try here.  Worth a shot right? So the Final Result Code it gives is W16FL644X-GAAZC8. I have the most current drivers from Nvidia --- first I thought that was the problem because Lenovo's site only offers the drivers from July which are several releases back so I tried their available version but same issues so I re-updated to current. I have tried to find anything that can help me determine more about what causes it to fail the memory tests and what the likely solutions might be (outside of replacing) but with no luck for anything since Win10 has been out -... We have an MSI all-in-one PC with touchscreen. I'm hoping to find a software package to centralize the happenings in our home. I've done some searching, but I don't really know where to start.

We're hoping to find a software package that...
- Checks multiple accounts for new mail
- Present a memo board so we can leave each other short messages
- Track a calendar so we can all add and update appointments
- Warn of upcoming birthdays, chores that are due, garbage day, etc...
- When idle, show photos, a clock, alerts, etc.
- Shopping list
- Works with the touch screen for most functions
- Eventually will control the X10 or ZWave power controllers for lights, etc.

...basically, replacing the whiteboard on our fridge, the calander on the wall, the constant nagging the kids to do their chores, and the lack of communication between us when we set up appointments, etc.

Does anyone know of software that does this? How about some Google search terms that might find some results?

A:Looking for centralized Home software; Memo's, chore lists, calendar..

I doubt you will find a single software package that can do everything you are asking for.

A few questions you should answer:
You have a single "Home PC", not a "Home Server" with multiple client PC's, correct?
Do more than one person need to use this single PC at the same time?
Does everybody log in and use the same Windows user account?
Are there any restrictions for some users such as children, or does everybody have Administrator authority?
Are you looking for a free solution, or are you willing to pay $$$?
Are you willing and capable to put in whatever time and effort is needed to accomplish all this.
MS Office Outlook email client can do a lot of what you want, but it is not free.
Windows Live Mail and Thunderbird are free, but have fewer features and capability.
Some of this might be done with Windows security and permissions, depending on how you are using User accounts and storing data.

You may be able to find a Business or Individual in your area that specializes in Home Automation that can help you, but it will not be free.

I hope I'm wrong and someone knows of a package like you want, but I believe if such a software package exists, it would be well known and used by a LOT of people, including me.

Hope this helps,

Ok - I've searched the forums, but cant find a similar problem and answer.
Program: Access 2000
OS: WinXP Pro SP1

I've got a database, and one of the tables is a supplement report table. The fields are:
SuppID / Autonumber Long Integer / (Primary Key)
OCA / Text field / (Case number)
SuppDate / Date/Time / (date supplement entered)
SuppInfo / Memo / (memo field for entering the text)

This table is associated to my main database by the OCA field, which is working fine in the querys, and bringing the information up in the reports. The problem is that when I enter about 1 full page of text in the memo field, and then print it in the report - the last few lines are not printed out.
I tried breaking the full text down in its paragraphs and making them in several entries under that OCA. That works fine again in the report, except even though the amount of text in the SuppInfo fields are less for each record in that table, the report still will not print the last few lines out.
I thought that maybe I had reached the character limit in the memo field originally, but when I broke it down, it still cuts it off.
Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated !

Thank you,
John R.

A:Solved: Urgent - Access2k memo field not completely printing

The problem in a report is that you are by default limited to the size of the box that you create in the report. The good news is that you can change this. Go into the report in design view and go into the properties of the note control. Under the format tab change the "Can Grow" option to yes. You may have to play with your report a little to make this look good. Keep in mind that the growth is always down and not horizontal.

I know this is probably a rather tiresome query, but I've surfed the net endlessly and not found a solution. I'm attempting to populate a memo box, which depends on user choice from a chain of combo boxes (unbound).

I'm creating a classroom planning/assessment database application (the new Learning Essentials for those involved in Australian Education). The system I'm creating, database-wise, is a little complicated (I am an absolute self-taught beginner, so please be kind and precise with your terminology, explaining where I should find the tools you mention). We have 7 "KLAs", which are each chosen with an "Assessable Element" (depending on the KLA) for each grade, which each act as an umbrella for a number of "Knowledge and Understandings" (each K & U has a descriptor of more than 255 characters. Under each "Knowledge and Understanding" is a dozen or so "Detailed Elements" (that the kids get assessed on). So I have the following hierarchy of tables:

Assessable Elements
Year (or Grade in America-speak)
Ways of Working (differing and dependent on previous choices)
Knowledge and Understandings (includes the descriptor)
Detailed Elements

Each table is linked in hierarchy to the one above via foreign keys (and sometimes to more than one table above (my description is the simplified version - it's more complicated than that). So you can imaging that the KLAs table is quite small (only 7 re... Read more

A:FoxPro 2.0 install problem

Unfortunately 2.0 might be a drop too old. It is very hard to troubleshoot software that old especially since it wasn't designed to run on modern machines.

I don't know if it's any cheaper but you can always import the data into Access if Foxpro is too expensive. Besides being easier to support, you would probably appreciate the features and interface of an upgrade.

I'm a mainframe kind of guy doing some volunteer work helping a local agency go from a legacy Foxpro application to a new system.
I need to be able to look at the DB structure in order to do data mapping for a conversion. As usual, the vendor no longer supports the system; there is no documentation; and the agency is so small that I have become the DP department. The application is in Foxpro 2.6, and FoxFire Vs 3 available for report writing. I would like to see the DB structures so that I can give the new vendor translation rules, and then generate ascii files to input into their conversion program. The agency might have Access 97 or 2000 on their systems that I could use to read the files - but they may not have a full blown version.

Access and ODBC drivers will get the job done. Just import the data form FoxPro to Access and you should get what you want.

This download is a patch which corrects a security vulnerability.

The vulnerability could be exploited by creating a web page that references a Visual FoxPro 6.0 application. If Visual FoxPro 6.0 is installed, and the filename of the application was constructed correctly, the application would execute. This would enable the application to not only interrogate databases, but also issue system commands in the userís security context. Any users of Visual FoxPro 6.0 should download and apply this update.

Is there a way to permanently disable the Themes property in FoxPro 8.0? With the themes enabled, the controls don't display properly when using program input forms.

There are ways to disable it for a certain session (Windows -> Properties Window -> change themes to false; executing command "SYS(2700,0)"; etc).

Also, it seems that including "COMMAND = _SCREEN.Themes = .F." in the config file will disable the themes every time you open FoxPro directly as an application. However, if you try to open a program through windows explorer, it doesn't seem to read the config file... the themes are enabled.

If there is no other solution, then I'll have to keep using one of these workarounds. However, it's really annoying and kills productivity when I have to either change a setting manually within FoxPro every time I use it, or else open programs through FoxPro (much slower than using the tree that's already expanded in Windows Explorer). I don't understand why the developer would not provide the ability to permanently set these properties like they do with properties in almost all applications.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

A:FoxPro Themes Property

I just found one other indirect solution. Either disabling the themes service or changing to the classic theme. The themes service can be disabled through services.msc. The theme can be changed to classic in the control panel. I think the disabling of the service results in the same appearance & function as using classic, but I'm not sure if one uses more system resources than the other.

With either, you lose aero, but I don't find the flip 3D helpful, and I actually prefer to see a list rather than previews when i hover over buttons on my taskbar. So functionally, I prefer classic anyway, and the slight drop in aesthetics isn't a big deal. The improved FoxPro experience alone is worth it.

If anyone has a direct solution to the FoxPro themes issue, please still share. Thanks.

A:Dosbased foxpro software

Welcome to TSG!

Right click the program .exe file, click Properties
On the Memory tab, try different values for Initial Environment.
On the Program tab, click the Advanced button, note the paths to the autoexec.nt and config.nt files.
Check the foxpro documentation for any settings it may need, perhaps a different Files= statement in config.nt

If all that fails, try adding a shell= line:
shell=%systemroot%\system32\ /e:XXXX
and try different values for the /E: parameter.
start with 512 and keep doubling it, see if that will work.

You can always install Micosoft's Virtual PC then install Win98 and run it in a virtual machine as well

I get the following error: Unrecognized Database Format filename.dbf. Also, when I click on file/open and select the down arrow in the files of type field, I should be able to see the FoxPro *.dbf format listed but I do not.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling MS Access but this did not help. I have also run the Add/Remove option from setup and selected Data Access/Database Drivers/, selected the change option and select all (the select all includes the MS Foxpro databases). This did not help either.

My ODBC drivers listed in control panel are as follows:

In the Drivers tab I have listed MS Foxpro driver (*.dbf), ile ODBCJT32.DLL, version 3.51.1713.00 dated 05/00/98.

I saw on Microsofts site that they suggested to go to Excel tools, options, general tab then click ignore other programs but that caused more problems than anything.

I am trying to find a way to execute FoxPro commands in a C# application utilizing .bat files. I was told by a coworker that there is a way to do it but alas, I can't seem to find any kind of help on it thus far.

If anyone could give me a nudge in the right direction or a reference I would be most grateful.

One of the programmers in my department is having major issues with his machine. The machine has been reformatted several times, but the problem persists. Basically, whenever he tries to compile his executable, the machine freezes up. It takes several reboots, with the machine freezing each time, before it will work properly.

Any suggestions on possible causes/solutions.

A:Compiling FoxPro exe. crashes Win2K

It is probably one of two problems:

1) Not enough memory, or faulty memory. Replace memory and upgrade memory.

2) Incompatibility between Focpro and Win2K. Ask him to try compile the code on NT4. If that works then it may just be that Win2K does not like Foxpro.

I have a Pentium II 400 Mhz machine with 64 MB RAM and WINDOWS ME with AVG 6.0 Antivirus and Zonealarm 2.6 Firewall installed. I have a Problem while running FOXPRO 2.6 for DOS Programs, a Foxpro error saying 'Too many Files open' occurs (i am using around 30 - 40 tables+indexes), Remedy for Previous Windows version was simple, increase the no's of FILES=??? and BUFFERS=??? in the CONFIG.SYS file. But in WINDOWS ME my CONFIG.SYS file is totally blank and after modifying it with required or any statements I wish to include I and then after saving the file when I restart my computer the CONFIG.SYS file is again BLANK.
How do I increase the FILES and BUFFERS settings in ME? are they used at all by ME? if not what is the remedy or can I include and implement the required statements thro' SYSTEM CONFIGURATION, HOW?

A:re: 'too many files open' error in foxpro 2.6 for DOS under WIN ME

WinME uses a new technique to handle the config.sys file.

I have 2 databases that I wish to mrege together using a unique identifier in each database.

I use the following strapline/command to create a query that allows me to save out the information required for both databases.
SELECT bagfile.bagno,bagfile.recno,job47812.* FROM bagfile,job47812 WHERE bagfile.recno=job47812.recno ORDER BY bagfile.recno,job47812.Recno
What I want to know is how do I use a variable as the filename. I can open the file by using the folliowing:-

JobNo = "Job47812"

Use &JobNo

But if I change the command above using the same method I get an error.

SELECT bagfile.bagno,bagfile.recno,&JobNo.* FROM bagfile,&JobNo WHERE bagfile.recno=&JobNo.recno ORDER BY bagfile.recno,&JobNo.Recno

This generates the following error message:-

Unrecognized phrase/keyword in command

My aim is to have a popup window that asks the user to input the file name. Instead of keep editing the program file every time the need to change the name of the file.

I'm assisting a company that is using fairly old software and they want to get off the old server and on to a more recent workstation.

I've created a test environment (Windows 7 Pro) and copied the live environment (windows 2000 Server) Data folder over. Here is their setup...

Live Working Environment: Windows 2000 Server (domain controller) FoxPro 5.0a as a shared folder (no database, just a folder with the data)

How they launch the Inventory system:

PC users double click a lucky.exe shortcut which is mapped to the server share in a \lucky folder. The only requirement for this to run is to map a driver letter E: to the server\lucky folder. When the exe is launched the custom FoxPro inventory system loads immediately. Everyone in the office uses this same method of opening and they can all run it at the same time. The data seems to be stored in a folder called \lucky\LU_

In this current environment the inventory system works fine.

However, for the fear of the hard drives failing they would like to get rid of the Windows 2000 server and have the inventory run on a newer machine. So I bought a Windows 7 Pro workstation. Copied the \lucky folder and tried to run the inventory system.

It takes more than 4 minutes just to load the Log in screen. It's clearly hanging or doing something erroneous. Then a pop up asks if we want to RUN the exe). Clicking Run then takes another 4 minutes or so just to see the log in screen appear. I've tested this on a Windo... Read more

Hello folks,

I have a client, who received an error message when Foxpro application initiated, Foxpro v9.0 error msg: "Unrecognized Database Format".

My client reported, that he have had a power failure and the problem appeared after he rebooted PC.

It appears that foxpro database corruption caused by power failure.

Any suggestions, friends...

A:foxpro .dbf database error message

Try opening the .dbf file in Excel or other program that supports opening the .dbf format.

Once opened in Excel you should be able to view the file, delete any "bad data", and resave to a new name (with the .dbf extension).

Also possible to create a new table with the structure of the old table, append records from the old to the new. May salvage records until the corruption is encountered.

Another methods contains referred links and might be effective in case manual ways cant help you..

I cannot connect to my database (free tables) when I have upgraded to Vista.

I have created system DSN using Visual FoxPro 6 driver in ODBC.

I have copied my web directory to new Inetpub directory and in IIS 7.0 manager I have marked it as an Application.

I have given manage permissions to IUSR, Users and IIS_IUSRS on directory with my data and on some temporary directory
as I have read about.
As I have checked, I can via my ASP script create text files in these directories, so permissions should be ok.

When I run my ASP code, it works fine, but when I try to connect to my FoxPro tables it doesnot work, connection cannot be opened. The error will appear at the following command:
objConn.Open myConnectionString

There is a part of my code:
SET objConn = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
objConn.Open "DSN=mydsn;PASSWORD=;UID=;" ' this row doesnot work
SET objComm = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Command")

The problem is also that my Internet Explorer and Firefox too show only the message that Web site cannot be shown, nothing else. Although I have marked all necessary switches (show details error messages in Internet Tools and in IIS Manager - Error pages)

Thank you very much for your support.

Hi there,

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum, I wasnt sure where it belonged!

I have been using a DOS based foxpro on a 486 pc for years. I have now used norton ghost and "ghosted" over the whole drive ( all 250mb of it!! ) onto another drive in a p2 machine. The pc runs fine in DOS but foxpro hangs just before it goes into the menu system that was there ( and still is ) on my old machine.
If i put the old drive into the new machine, it hangs in the same place, place it back in the old machine and all works fine!!
anyone know what is going on?

Our IT department is full of XP machines. We are all running the same Dell Dimension 2350's with XP Pro SP1. All the machines work fine except for two of them. They experience severe speed drops accross the network whether it's getting a liscense for one of our programs or transferring records to a database. The only difference between these two machines and all the others is that they're running FoxPro For Windows 2.6. Has anyone ever heard of a conflict between XP and FPW? Thanks.

I have an old POS application written in Foxpro 2.0 that fires a serial cash drawer by redirecting the output to the serial port and sending a signal out the port.

The user just moved the program to an XP Home machine and we can't get the cash drawer to open. The cash drawer company says that XP doesn't allow as much control of the serial ports and that is why the Set Printer To command isn't redirecting output.

We can open the cash drawer from a .bat file on the desktop, but can't call that .bat file from w/in the Foxpro program.

I'm hoping someone has run into this problem before.

I have lots of old programs running on XP Pro machines, but none with a cash drawer.
