File Paths Changing Randomly

Q: File Paths Changing Randomly

I have a program that plays music on VB 2008 Express Edition. It accesses music from my memory stick because I'm going to need to move the program to another computer. However, the memory stick was always listed under the J:\ drive, but now randomly it's listed under the K:/ drive. Is there a way so that I can just get the music "into" the program so that it can just play the music no matter what computer it is on. P.S. I also need to get this program to run on XP, and the file path is E:\, I'm afraid that since mine changed randomly, the XP computer I'm moving it to will also change randomly.

Please Help!

A: File Paths Changing Randomly

You can change the drive letter by going to Administrative Tools in Control Panel and them going into Computer Management, there is a section called Disk Management which will show all connected drives, from there you can change the drive path.

I'm trying to figure out how to change my file path names. The system name on my computer is Tsula but all paths still say the 'Owner' thing.

I'm having an issue with Windows Media Player for Windows 7.

I imported a bunch of playlists and their associated music files from an XP machine to my new Win7 machine, and some of the music files aren't playing - Media Player simply says that there was "an error" with no further explanation given, but this error only occurs with files with a certain file path.

On my XP machine a large chunk of my music files were located in C:\Documents and Settings\[my name]\My Documents\My Music\[artist name]\[song title] as .wma files. I know that in Win7 the Documents and Settings subdirectory was replaced by Users or something - that's not the real problem, because for all my other music files, the file paths as shown in my WMP playlists will adjust themselves automatically and play the music files correctly no matter where the files are moved. My issue stems from the fact that WMP is not correcting the file paths for the files located in Documents and Settings the way it is for all the other files. There is no way to edit the file paths in WMP, or I would have tried that.

This is not the first time I've moved my XP playlists to a Win7 machine, but on my previous attempts I have had no problem simply copying all my music to one folder and playing them in WMP. So I'm not sure why it's not working this time.

I would prefer to avoid rebuilding all my playlists by hand - I really don't think that should be necessary, since as I said I've moved all my data from an XP to a W... Read more

Hello! I recently upgraded my computer with an SSD for boot and main programs and use my 1TB HDD for general programs and media storage. The thing is I want it to by default install to my D:\ drive.

Now the only solution I see is editing the registry ProgramFilesDir - Which has some serious flaws. It will attempt to launch every program off of the D:\ drive even when it is stored on C:\ and about 9 out of 10 times, it still default installs to C:\.

Does anyone have a fix for this?

There is an Excel App on our network that gets used by multiple users. In this app there are some VLookups that pull information from other spreadsheets. The problem we are having is that the physical paths in the VLookups are being changed to relative paths. Instead of using L:\Files\somefile.xls it changes to \\server\share\somefile.xls.

When this happens the VLookup stops working, it's odd because both paths are legetimate but only the one with the physical path works. This is happening on several different spreadsheets and the formulas have to continualy remapped.

All users are using Office 97 but the OS are mixed, Win ME, 2000 and 98. Any ideas?

Here are the Vlookups:

Before
=VLOOKUP($C18,'L:\shared files\[EmpDataLog.xls]RATE'!$B$10:$AZ$642,5)

After
=VLOOKUP($C18,'\\server01\shared files\[EmpDataLog.xls]RATE'!$B$10:$AZ$642,5)

Hi, Tal. I suspected, so I confirmed with someone else here at work, that your users have drives mapped differently and they really need to be the same.

I changed the user name from "user001" to "user888". That changed the name on the login/logout screens. But the user folders and paths all stayed with the old name "user001". As a result some things, like the name installed programs will grab and use, are still called "user001".

Is there a way, short of re-installing Windows, to change all the appropriate folders, paths and registry entries to read "user888" and get rid of the old user name completely?

A:Changing the User Folders (and paths)

You may want to create a new account and move the user files over to that new account. Then delete the old account.

On my desktop-computer i have shared some folders with my home network. Then i changed their paths, as i reorganized myself. Now it seems, when I acces the network, those folders paths dont seem to be updated, as i cant access them.

I can now of course "unshare", rename and share them again, which makes them again accessible through the network, but the old "folder names" still remain. why is that, how can i correct it?

Same problem with some old "synched folders".

A:shared folder and changing their paths

Curious, where do the old 'folder names' remain? Just in the drop down menu under 'Map network drive ...'?

If so those paths are saved in your registry.

When I first installed Win 7 I simply went with the default user name of "Owner". I wouldn't mind changing it now but I'm concerned about the effect on my shortcuts and so on.

If I rename it, will Windows go through and automatically update all the shortcuts and program paths and so on? My gut reaction is "Of course it will" but I've learned to be cautious with Windows! Will I end up with a lot of tidying up to do?

A:Will changing username mess up paths?

Only the username will be changed. The c:\users\<username> path does not get changed and this can lead to more confusion.

Better method:

1) Create two new accounts. One in the username you want, and one temporary...you can even call it TEMP if you like.

2) Log in as TEMP. Use Windows Easy Transfer to migrate all files and settings from your old account to the new one you just created.

3) When this is complete, log in as your new user and make sure everything is there and working.

4) Delete your old user and TEMP.

Hi friends!

I'm experiencing a very strange bug with a custom library. On the odd occasion when I open an explorer pane and navigate to my library on the left-hand side, two of my included folders - which are both located in 'C:\Program Files\...' will change to a non-existent 'C:\Program Files (x86)\...' version of the same folder. If I click on that folder in the library pane it will tell me the folder doesn't exist.

It happens infrequently but often enough to be annoying. It's not immediately clear what causes it or why it stops. When it happened just now I closed all open explorer panes and opened a new one, and the library displayed the correct 'non x86' folder structure.

Any idea what causes this and how it can be avoided?

Thanks!

By default, programs install to the same drive that the currently running OS is installed on. What I'm trying to do, is to tell it to install programs to another drive/partition.

This way, if I needed to reformat and reinstall the OS, the bulk of my programs will remain intact.

I've read other forums and they've given skeptical answers to indicate that it can't be done, but I figured I'd pose the question here myself.

A:Automatically changing program install paths

Yea, mostly games are what I had in mind.

I always move the My Documents folder to a completely different physical drive upon each OS installation (I've been reformatting a lot lately due to instablity with recent hardware upgrades).

I've gotten into the habit of keeping multiple, up-to-date copies of select Application Data--most importantly, Firefox browser data. Switching between a laptop and desktop regularly, I also am able to perodically sync the two systems with the same bookmarks, cookies, saved passwords, and the like.

I've heard there's a way to do it remotely with FireFox so you can import them from anywhere, but for this particular purpose I'm more comfortable keeping the information in my grasp.

Hiyas

Here's my story. I've just managed to change a systems boot letter from E:\ to C:\. The machine is working fine now, but all the programs that were installed are still looking in E:\ which no longer exsists. I've gone through and changed a few of these paths manually, but after an hour of that i realised it'll take far too long to do it this way.

What i'm looking for is a tool to look through the registry and replace all instances of "E:\" with "C:\". Does anyone know if such a product is available? It's be a great help.

Thanks in advance

Hi, new to these forums so I really hope I'm posting this up in the right subforum.

Long story: My old hard drive was dying, and after installing a new one I used this "EaseUS" program to clone the old HDD's data onto the new one. This worked fine except for the fact that all of my shortcuts stopped functioning because the letter assigned to the new HDD was different from the old HDD.

Is there any easy, automatic way of making all shortcuts point to the new file path? Or do I have to manually change the hard drive letter in each shortcut's properties?

I use WinAso Registry Optimizer; when I run it my computer crashes when it gets to Invalid File Paths, but when I remove the invalid file paths flag, it completes the process just fine. I would like some advice on correcting invalid file paths...thanks.

A:Invalid File Paths

Don't use registry cleaners. If you continue to use them, chances are that crashes will be among the least of your problems. Those things are junk, do only harm, and you should be thankful you were even able to reboot. Performance is not improved by using them, they remove needed entries, and they create their own "errors" so that they can "fix" them, making worse errors in the process.

Hello,

A little background first.

I have a shortwave radio that is of a new type where a lot of the functions such as filters, etc. is done via software that resides on the PC.

The radio is mfg. by the WINRADIO company.
The model of the radio is a G31 DDC

After playing with the radio, it automatically Saves the frequencies that you have listened to, and puts them into Memory to be able to recall them later.
The file that it creates is called "User Memory"..

I seem to have the User Memory File in the right place, I think, but the "path" to get there seems to be different.

I have one path of:
Libraries/ Documents/ WINRADIO/ G31 DDC/ User Memory

And another path of:
C:/ Users/ Bob/ My Documents/ WINRADIO/ G31 DDC/ User Memory

They both seem to lead to the correct file of User Memory.

a. My main question: Is there really only one file of User Memory, but two different ways or paths to get to it ?

b. What's with Libraries; I've never set that up ? What are they ?

c. Notice that one path has My "Documents", and the other just "Documents".

If anyone could explain this for me, I would be most appreciative.

Much thanks,
Bob

So I've been trying to use system file checker, and encountered a problem where it can't repair a file. I found this page detailing how to manually fix the problem:

Use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7

I was fine until step 2, where it says

"For example, type takeown /f E:\windows\system32\extremely_simplified_example.dll"

The problem is, my CBS.log file says stuff like:

Cannot repair member file [l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"
Unable to repair \SystemRoot\WinSXS\Manifests\\[l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"

and I don't know how to translate that into a path to use with the takeown command. I searched for that file using explorer and found a dozen different copies, so I'm not sure which one to replace.

Semi-related questions: Can I just replace them all? I'm planning on using a copy of the file from a similar system that works, is that ok?

Thanks!

A:Help understanding CBS.log file paths

Hello Southbound, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Those instructions there are fine, but just a bit vague. OPTION THREE in the tutorial below can help give you only the SFC results to help make it easier to go through.SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Next, the tutorial below can show you how to extract files from your installation disc to replace any listed files that SFC cannot repair.Extract Files from Windows 7 Installation DVD
Before doing anything, please post back and upload your sfcdetails.txt file to see what all may be wrong, and if it any file that cannot be repaired is worth worrying about.Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums
To help interrupt what it says to know the path:Cannot repair member file [l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"
Unable to repair \SystemRoot\WinSXS\Manifests\\[l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"
The first line says that SFC cannot repair the FWPKCLNT.SYS file.

The second line is the path of the file. "SystemRoot" is a variable "%SystemRoot%" that is actually just a shortcut for "C:\Windows". This leaves you with the file path as:C:\Windows\WinSXS\Manifests\FWPKCLNT.SYS
Doing a search on the C: drive for the listed FWPKCLNT.SYS file would help give you all of it's locations if needed as well.

Hope this helps for now,
Shawn

Hello everyone! New here with this problem, hope I'm entering it under the right category (if not, sorry)

I have a local and a network folder embeded in a tiddlywiki page in iframes.
They both contain folders, .doc and .xls files with both greek and english names.
I've set up the open office plugin to show the aforementioned files within browser, so the frames work as
a sort of view area (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=94384&page=2 ).

At the same time I need to be able to open the folders / files in their native windows environment.
The above configuration doesn't allow that as .doc and .xls links open in the open office environment by default.

A number of firefox add-ons (Open With 4.0 / https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/11097/,
IE Tab 2 / https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/92382/) provide the functionality to open firefox links in different browsers and/or programs.

I've set up explorer, winword.exe and excel.exe as manual entries in the Open With add-on which allows you to right click on firefox links and select to open them with these applications. Other add-ons allow you to do the same thing with internet explorer or a chosen application.

They all present the following problem:

The plugin works perfectly when opening the folder file:///C:/a with explorer
and the files file:///C:/a/a.doc with winword and file:///C:/a/a.xls with excel.exe.

I guess this may be a tiny bit off the subject here, but I am attempting this in windows 7.

I have a program file manager tool called 'Directory Opus' that is capable of calling windows external programs and passing them the current directory the file manager is sitting on.

So far so good.

Now I want to call a cygwin (linux/unix emulator for windows) terminal with that file manager.

Checking properties on the cygwin Icon I got the path: C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico -

So it is a path to a command and an argument to that command.

Actually I guess it is 2 arguments to a command since I think '-' in that position means to feed anything on STDIN to the command. At least that would be true in unix shell programming.

So using the Directory opus setup I pass this call:
'@async:C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico - <and here add {s}>'

So the call ends up:
'@async:C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico - {s}'

That call does just what it is supposed to. It passed the current file absolute address however cygwin terminal does not understand the windows path notation. If I were passing it: C:\subdir\blah\ It would just say 'No such file' Cygwin terminal wants to see /cygdrive/c/subdir/blah Or at least I think that is what is happing.

So to cut to the chase.... I'd like to put a little wrapper to Cygwin terminal in there with the code necessary to convert 'C:\subdir\blah\' to '/cygdrive/c/subdir/blah/'

But, I do not know how ... Read more

If I try to use the account to save files, I just get an error message saying that the folder xxx or file path doesn't exist, depending on where I am trying to save them. Hello.

I am currently using Skydrive to synchronize files and folders between my home and office computers. I created an Excel file which has hyperlinks linking to files located under the same folder as the Excel file on the local hard disk.
In the past I was using Excel 2010 and the synching would work fine. I would open the excel file in any of the two computers and when I clicked on the hyperlinks the file stored on the local hard disk would open. Recently I purchased Office 360 and suddenly the paths in the hyperlinks linking to the files were changed from a local relative location I.e. \test.xlsx! to a cloud address I.e. http://d.docs.live.net/afodfldfad/test.xlsx. On top of that even if I click on the hyperlink the file does not open.
Also Skydrive keeps creating copies of the files at random with the name of the computer where it was modified at the end I.e. test-Home-PC.xlsx.

Anybody know the reason for this and a way around it?

Thanks.

In C:\Documents and Settings\User I have 2 folders:

Start Menu
Favorites

The files within the Start Menu folder, as an example, have the path: C:\Documents and Settings\User\Start Menu.

If I rename the Start Menu folder to, say, xxxxStart Menu, and view path of the files in the folder again, the path remains the same C:\Documents and Settings\User\Start Menu instead of what I expected to be C:\Documents and Settings\User\xxxxStart Menu

The same applies for Favorites.

Additionally, I can leave the renamed xxxxStart Menu folder in Documents and Settings\User and create a new folder of the same name (xxxxStart Menu) and it allows me to do this--even though both names are the same!

1) Is this normal?
2) Why is this?
3) Are these some kind of "special" folders that Windows XP treats differently?
4) Why doesn't this happen for other folders like Desktop, Cookies, Local Settings, SendTo, and Application Data?

Hi all

Well it's been interesting upgrading from Vista (which had been a nightmare for me) to Win 7 which despite a few flaws has actually made things easier (finally Microsoft get something nearly right) BUT I've got something niggling at me. I've disabled UAC to level 4 (no warnings etc) but sometimes without me doing anything it will turn itself back on again. I only notice it when the PC Optimiser icon gets the little blue and yellow shield back on it again, and when I try to open a couple of documents I made in Vista it says I have no administrative rights. So I yet again go into the group policy thing and disable again to get it back, but why is it doing it??? Anyone???? I have a feeling it's going to be one of those daily things I do from now on just to be able to work on my previous folders etc, but I'd love to know why it's doing it!

A:UAC randomly changing

I cannot directly address your problem, but I can give a generic tip. Upgrading from one OS to another has a bad reputation for causing problems. When you upgrade, all your problems on the previous OS are carried over to the new one. Not so with a clean install.
If someone else has any ideas, great! If a few days go by and no one else has posted, feel free to take my suggestion.

Hi, I'm new here, so I apologize if I don't set up my thread properly.

Anyway, basically what I'm running into is that I re-seated my CMOS battery a few weeks ago because my computer wasn't starting up. Obviously, the clock reset. I just synced it back up, and everything was fine for all of 10 minutes.

At this point, the clock resets on reboot, but also seems to switch to seemingly random times while the computer is on. I've stopped and started Windows time, done several virus scans that yielded nothing, but it still seems to do this. I've googled it, but I haven't seen anyone with this specific problem.

Thoughts?

Hi everyone. I have a wierd little problem with icons randomly changing. For example when i install a game, the shortcut to the game on the desktop is normal right after installation but a while after it changed to another icon (a random windows icon) for no reason and it dosen't go back. I tried deleting the hidden desktop.ini file and it didn't work. I searched all around the web and couldn't find so much... Can anyone please help me resolving this issue?

Thanks!

Hi all,

Recently my computer's starting switching windows by itself and I have no idea why. I've done a virus scan (AVG) and used Windows Defender to check for malware but nothing's turned up so far. I've also noticed that if I leave a Word document open it'll randomly type a symbol (the little box one) if left alone.

None of my keys are stuck or have anything underneath them.

How can I fix this?

A:Computer changing windows randomly and on its own

It does sound like Malware. You could try an online scanner such as http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ in addition to the scans you've already ran. When did the problem start? How long have you been running on your current installation of Windows? Do you have Automatic Updating turned on? Any Warnings in your Action Center?

I've been browsing this forum for quite a while, it's been most helpful at times. Unfortunately, I've hit a brick wall with this most recent problem of mine and it's driving me absolutely insane.

Here's the basics: about a month and a half ago, I started to notice certain folders in my Windows 7 HP 64-bit install will randomly change folder views to something else. It will usually change to details view.

Now, I like to keep my Downloads folder (shortcut link under Favorites in Windows Explorer) in list view. My Libraries folder (which opens by default in Windows Explorer) is usually set to tiles view. Generally, most folders I prefer to keep in list view. Another example is the normal Program Files folder for 64-bit program installations.

For some extremely unknown and frustrating reason, these folders mentioned above will seemingly randomly change to details view all by themselves with no reason as to why.

Some time ago I had done some cleaning and noticed a bunch of 'desktop.ini' files. I looked up what they were and decided I could safely delete most of them in the Users\Public and Users\[me] folders. I did this for the most part but then decided maybe not to delete all of them, so I didn't. I suspected this may have been causing the problem, so I booted up Windows 7 virtual machine and copied over the system-made files again and replaced them.

This did not fix the problem.

Another strange thing is that I have not been able to isolate the cause. I could go for half a... Read more

Hey guys,
The system time on my computer changes randomly, often times to the last time/date that I set to resynchronize it with the actual time. I've switch the CMOS battery with the one in my laptop. but the problem persists. I also manually added windows time (W32Time) in services.msc.
I also tried stopping it from synchronizing with internet time servers, and also changing it from the windows time server to a .gov time server, but the problem persists!

Additionally, I ran full scans with AVAST and MBAM, but they both came up clean.

Do you guys have any suggestions?

I got a Sony Computer about a year ago and it's been randomly changing my brightness out of no where. Generally it moves it two below whatever I set it as and then changes it back to whatever I have set it on.

I have tried doing everything I can think of to fix it. I changed my brightness to whatever it was changing it to, figuring that would work. It would do the same thing with the new brightness (unless it was a low brightness, then it would bring it up). I thought it might be the Adaptive Brightness thing new computers come with, but mine was off! I turned it on and it stopped doing it for about ten minutes, but then continued doing it.

My computer is a Sony VAIO computer, running Windows 7 Home Premium.

A:Sony Computer randomly changing brightness.

I guess I should add on that when it changes to the lower/higher setting it slowly goes back to what I have it set as. Like it'll fade back to the lower light, or slowly brighten to the higher lighting.

This is annoying my greatly, even though it shouldn't be incredibly noticeable. I tried changing to different power plans to change it, but nothing is working. :/

This problem occurred both pre and post installing SP2. Also still occurs after complete format and re-install.

Hi,

I get that nasty bluescreen with a STOP: 0x00000050 sometimes when I change maps in Ragnarok Online. It says my main driver file 3dldd.dll from my gfx card could be responsible for the error. I can only restart my PC then and sometimes, I get a 0x0000007F while it is loading windows xp. Restart and everything works fine. I had a 0x00000024 one time too and I had to reinstall the driver for my HDD before I could enter windows again.
When I walk into a portal / warp portal in RO, the loading screen appears and either when it starts loading the new map I get my crash or when it has almost finished loading it. And it seems when it appeared once, it appears more often. Sometimes I can play one or two days normally, other days I get the error after the first mapchange I made. It is driving me nuts, because I already tested so many things -- take old drivers for my gfx card, benchmark, ram test (cancelled it after 3 1/2 hrs but it said my PC passed the test), chkdsk (and sometimes it loads chkdsk after my PC crashed randomly. . .). . . I really tested a lot with the software, but nothing helped. I would like to have more tests to see whether it's a problem of the incompatibility of my gfx card and the game, because I can't just go and buy all hardware pieces that could be erroneous (hdd, ram, gfx card, whatever) -- I have to know what exactly is wrong. Acer Aspire M1100 AM1100-E1402A
Mfg Date 2008\03\07
Vista Home Premium 32-bit

It was running OK, but getting a bit old and a bit slow. I upgraded to a W7 desktop, but wanted to keep this one playing around with.

Ran System Recovery 2 or 3 times using the Alt-F10 method. First time, I wanted to avoid loading bloatware so ran msconfig early on, went to Startup to uncheck Acer Launch and stuff like that. Windows Update worked until SP1. Just couldn't get SP1 to install, including when I downloaded it from the web.

Then I ran System Recovery and let the bloatware run. It stalled at 9/11. Again, Windows Update worked until SP1.

Then I tried System Recovery using discs, instead of Alt-F10. It failed for some reason. I have a couple other System Recovery discs from an laptop and an eMachine laptop. I tried them with the same result. Recovery starts, writes over the C drive, then fails.

The message is:
The system registry contains invalid file paths. Installation cannot proceed. This system image was applied without guaranteeing that drive-letter assignments would match across computers.

So now I'm stuck.

I googled the error message, but generally ended up in discussion boards that are over my head. I think I saw some discussion about partition. The vista image extracts to the temporary drive letter D.

If you use a regular installation dvd and MS standard setup.exe, it will fix the os registry letter correctly. (Defaults to the first letter i.e. C as A and B are reserved for floppies )

If you are trying to restore from a factory image, you will have trouble because there is now another os on the machine.

I have a script I use for it.

You could get it to work , but it is a lot of mucking around.

It is just easier to use a Vista install dvd ( not the same as your factory recovery image ), boot it up, and install to your desired partition.

Hello -- I posted this on the iTunes Communities forum, but received zero responses. I am somewhat desperate, as this seems to be a very bad ongoing issue. ANY help at all would be GREATLY appreciated!

My computer is a Dell Studio XPS 8100.

I am running Windows 7 and iTunes v. 9.2.0.61. Just recently, from Grid view, iTunes seems to be deleting songs as well as cover art. It seems to be chance when it happens, but when it does happen, it is always this way:

- From Grid view (album thumbnails), I double click on an album thumbnail, and the album art image disappears. I CANNOT re-add the art to that particular album after that, either, even manually.

- The album folder opens up after the double-click, and then when I double click a song to play it, it starts playing, but then I notice it has disappeared from the tracklist. I cannot select it again -- it is GONE. I checked to see if in fact the song is deleted not only from iTunes, but from my C: drive storage location, and it is GONE. DELETED for GOOD.

Another thing I've noticed, from List view, just happened today -- I double click on a song, and it changed the artist tag. Seriously! It just changed the tag. It happened to my "Les Mis" files; changed the tag from the composers' names to "Original Broadway Cast." Each file I double-clicked in that album changed the artist tag in this way.

And then -- my computer crashed. The screen went completely white, and the only way I could restart my c... Read more

Hi
In Windows 7 (and Vista) - all files displayed show only the file name.
This is particularly noticeable with audio and image files - but I often have identical file names in different formats or sizes.
Is there a way to make the .wav or .mp3 etc suffix visible and more importantly - can I edit it and sort by type?

(At the moment I am reverting to an old laptop running XP where I can edit and sort things easily).

Many thanks,

A:File Manager - file attribute display and changing

Hi catstevecam and welcome to Seven Forums.

Yes you can display the file extension. In explorer select Organize->Folder and search options. On the view tab uncheck Hide extensions for known file types.
If you right click on an empty area in a folder you can chose sort and grouping options. Type is one of these.

You can change the attributes of some file types (Music & Videos) in the properties details tab.

Hello Everyone,

I have kind of an odd question, I have been looking into changing file type icons when I came across an interesting conflict.
I would like to be able to change the file type icon for all .exe files to the same file type icon within a file explorer. If you were to try to do this, all icons that are associated with each .exe program becomes the same icon no matter where they are located.

The thing is that usually when I am in a file explorer the .exe files are installers and when I have .exe files in places like on my desktop, in the start menu, and in the taskbar, they are for launching already installed programs.

Can anyone think of a possibly way that could solve this conflict easily with some kind of setting or software.

I thought maybe something with shortcuts but that turned out to not work for me.
I also believe that .ico icon files have multiple sizes within them but I don't think there would be a realistic way to edit each of them for all the programs installed.

Has anyone else ever tried something like this? or have any solutions that I am not aware of?
Thank You

A:Changing .exe File Type Icons In File Explorer But Nowhere Else

File Explorer is on Windows 8/8.1, renamed from Windows Explorer on Windows 7 back to Windows95/Windows NT4.

Usually an .exe file for running a program will have its own icon, right-click a Shortcut, Properties, Change Icon to see what the .exe file has in it. Some programs may have a separate icon in their Folder in C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86). If no icons are found Windows will put up a panel with a number of choices but they are more generic, mostly for Windows things.

Installable .exe files will have more of a generic icon and are of only a few types.

I've searched and searched, this forum and google, and it's ding dang hard to search for this specific problem due to the keywords really being too common. Oy!

Anyway, my specific quicklaunch problem is this - upon login (any user on my pc) the quick launch icons are not reflecting the proper icon for the program. For instance, the IE icon may look like the calculator icon, show desktop as Outlook, etc - even though the icons do launch the proper program when clicked. The icons are completely random, I never get the same configuration twice!

I find that disabling and then re-enabling the quick launch taskbar gets my icons back, but not in my preferred order so it's quite a pain to reset them each time.

I've investigated some other simular quick launch problems and solutions, such as spy or malware issues (not here - besides, this is a brand new pc out of the box). I've tried registry fixes to no avail.

My slight guess is this - I'm not entirely sure but I THINK the problem started immediatly after a required reboot when installing Norton Anti-Virus 2005. I'm going to do more investigating in this arena, because I definately had an issue with that program giving errors on login/reboot because I moved the start menu items to my own desired folder and the program didn't like that!

Any other suggestions welcomed, because I can see a few unresolved threads in this forum with what seems to be a simular situation.

Hi,

I am doing exams soon so I need to start studying. I have set up OpenDNS to block some websites that may distract me but I don't need them blocked all the time. As OpenDNS offers no settings for time to block I need to change the DNS server back to my ISP's when the blocking is not needed. The command to change DNS in Command Prompt is

"C:\Netsh Interface ip set dns "Local Area Connection" static "[DNS GOES HERE]"

But with a START command in front of it this command does not work when put into a batch program.

Does anyone know either a better way of changing the DNS at different times or the correct way to insert this command into a batch file.

Thanks

A:Changing DNS With A .bat File

This may not be exactly what you want but you could always use your host file to redirect or simply block websites that may distract you.

Hosts File : Use in Windows 7 / Vista

Simply follow this tutorial. You don't have to use 127.0.0.1, which is your loopback address. You can use the IP address of say, a website you should be studying instead of your distractions

Simply erase the entries from the blocked files when you don't want them blocked.

Hello All. I am wondering if it is possible to change a EXE file to a MSI file? I am trying to change Firefox setup.exe to Firefox setup.msi for my work. Can you please tell me how this is done?

Thanks,
Amer.

A:Changing EXE file to MSI...

I don't think changing the extension will allow you to run the setup as Microsoft installer, that's a whole different ballgame.

Why do you want to have it as an MSI? Won't your workplace allow executables in?

If executables can exist, but it won't allow them to be moved, here's what I would do:

Rename the firefox setup from .exe to .txt (don't worry, there's a reason for this, and I'll get back to it in a minute).

It's likely that a text file is listed as a trusted file type, so it will most likely allow it through whatever boundary there is.

Once it's on the hard drive of the computer you want to install it on, rename the file back to .exe and run it. If this doesn't work, you'll have to resort to a more difficult method, such as zipping the entire installed FireFox directory, which may or may not work because then the registry entries will not be included with the directory on the machine you're putting it on. But try that first, and see if it works.

This problem started several months ago and I was only noticing it in association with my .wps files. Since that time I have downloaded and installed two other word processors, Open Office and AbiWord, and the same has been happening with documents that I've saved using those two programs too.

I have also had a couple of .txt files on my desktop, files that hadn't been opened for several months, decide that they wanted to turn themselves into files with no apparent extension.

How can I find out if there is a sneaky key logger on this machine or if someone is using a program like go to my PC to remotely access this machine?

Hello guys and gals! I had AVG doing a virus scan at 4:30am every morning since I wasn't using the computer around that time. One morning, while working on a paper, the virus scanner kicked in and only went on for about 5 minutes - not nearly long enough. I looked at all the logs of AVG and noticed it had been doing that for a month now, just scanning maybe a hundred folders and quitting with positive results. No errors, no viruses - just stopping as though it was done - even though I had 3 drives selected to scan.

I uninstalled AVG twice before I got it in working condition again. No negative results have come back since I got it working.

Then I noticed I was unable to get on msn and it pointed me to my hosts file as the problem. I got a new HOSTS file and replaced it, then a few days later, the same issue happened. Replaced it again, and what do you know? Two days later, something edits the hosts file and can't get on yet again.

I've run AVG (up-to-date), but it hasn't found anything. Ran spybot with no luck either. I had just realized that my java was out of date so I'm betting something took advantage of that.

I'm running Malwarebytes right now and will post any logs that come up from that

Any help would be awesome! Thanks all!

Hi.

I recently downloaded hosts file from mvps. I've noticed that it restricts some features of myspace.

Could someone please help me to change the hosts file to allow myspace videos to play?

Thanks.

A:Help Changing Hosts File

You could start by going to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\etc\HOSTS and double clicking on it and when it asks "Open with" choose Notepad. Then delete either anything related to myspace, or just delete all of it and re-create your hosts file but without myspace entries.

Hello,

I'm having a problem where I'm unable to choose "Save as type: All files", in order to change the format of a document using a word processor. I do not have Microsoft Word, but I've tried this with both WordPad and LiberOffice Writer and it isn't working. I'm trying to change a .odt-extension to .pdf. I've never ran into this type of problem before. Does anyone know why this is happening and whether there is something that I can do about it?

A:Need help changing file type

You cannot save a document as PDF simply by changing the file extension! If you change the extension of for instance a LibreOffice .odt file to .pdf, it's still an ODT document for LibreOffice, not a PDF file. The same in WordPad; whatever extension you give to your document, it's still a WordPad document, not a PDF file.

Looking the Save As options in LibreOffice, it seems not to have the PDF available as is in for instance Microsoft Word. However, Windows 10 gives you an easy workaround: Print to PDF.

You can Print to PDF from every application capable to print. Choosing this option will naturally not send anything to a local printer, in fact you don't even have to have a printer installed in order to be able to print to PDF. Printing to PDF simply saves a local copy of your document in PDF file format.

I need to edit a document in PDF and I know PDF wont allow that. Isn't there a way to save it as a different type of file or do something where i can than edit it? I have not figured out if there is a way how to do that.

this is the first draft of some rules revision for my industry and it is 116 pages long so it is not very practical to just retype it. It will make it easier if i can find a way to treat it like a Word document where i can highlight, edit, delete etc.

any ideas??

Thanks

Hi,
Having just upgraded from Vista (great move) I find I have a couple of files in
my folders that I cannot now read. It is not a BIG deal if I cannot but I should still like to be able to.
These are ".eml" files which, I believe, were attachments through Windows Mail which,of course, is gone in Windows 7. I only use Google Mail now in any event.
Is there any way these files can be converted to a readable format ? There are a few pay for converters on the web but I do not want these really. I believe there is a way that these can be converted to mht or likewise. Help would be appreciated.
Incidentally, ten days into Windows 7 has been a revelation...speed, no errors, BSODs or any of the Vista plagues. Best move I ever made.

A:Changing file types.

Hello Peter,

To be able to read/open a .eml (email) file, you would need to install a email client program. A good free one would be Windows Live Mail. In it, you coud also setup an email account to read your Google Mail in as well.

Hope this helps,

Good day...

I have downloaded a couple of video files that have the .flv extension as I have done in the past. Problem is these new ones will play for about 30 seconds and stop. I have noticed if I hover the cursor over them they are noted as TEMP files. All of the other flv files that play fine are noted as flv.

How can I correct these TEMP files so they will play through?

Thanks.

OK, I have recently downloaded a new version of a program and I installed it into my C:\Program Files\ instead of my D:\Program Files\ folder. The files associated with the newly installed program are still trying to open at the D:\ location when it isn't there anymore and when I try to use the file type association program, it won't change from D:\... to C:\....

Could someone please tell me how to change the associations manually like in Window's XP please?

I'm trying to repair my wifes comp that I lent to my cousin (its at his place).

There were a lot of nastys, but I have cleaned most of them out using: avg, kasperky (something like that), S&D, Ad-Aware and avast.

Computer has WinPatrol installed, and comodo firewall. Unfortunitely they set the firewall to "allow all", and accepted any changes Scotty picked up on.

As far as I know the only problems left is that the Host file has been changed and this stops them from getting onto most antivirus sites and techguy. I tried deleteing the entries manually, but it wont allow me to change it.

kasperky (or whatever it is) is picking up a couple of files that are password protected, one is an ini file.

I tried changing the host file with both kasperky (or whatever it is) and Scotty turned off and also left on.

An help appreciated.

I'm getting a few problems that seem related to the fact some of my files and folders are owned by the administrator or require administrator permissions.

I use GFI Backup. It reports problems with lacking permissions to access certain files -- unless I turn off UAC.

Also there are many folders on a hard drive which is separate from my system hard drive and existed before I installed Windows 7. It seems many of those folders require administrator permission to rename and move and such.

How can change the owner or permissions to remove these problems?

Mike

Relatively simple question but can't find a solution.

In Win XP is it possible to change the file color/font of a file name or folder name? So far all I have seen is changing the font color for ALL files on the computer, but not specific ones.

Doing a google search I have seen that people think this is impossible on XP.

What do you think?

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you!

I made an executable file with freebasic compiler (basicly i turned qbasic source file into stand-alone executable) and i wonder if there is ANY way to change version of file so it is displayed at properties in "details" menu?
i searched youtube and wikipedia and windows help but nothing.
pls help me, i have some plans with it and i really want to add version info

A:Changing file version

You need to add it to the file first, because freebasic compiler does not do that.

I would use Restorator 2007.
In the program menu Resources - Add Resource - Windows Standard type- Version

And then because trial version of Restorator leaves trial marks inside exe file, I would use Resource Hacker to edit these marks (in resource hacker it is not possible to add a new Version resource as easy as in Restorator).

I have Shrink 3.2 in program files x86, this program uses Nero 7 to burn dvd's, I want to use Shrink 3.2 modified to use IMGBurn to burn the dvd's, the instructions tell me to delete the original shrink 3.2 files in x86 & replace them with the modified shrink 3.2 files, I have the modified files on the desktop.
So do I just delete the original files in x86 then just drag the modified files from the desktop & drop them into the the x86 program files??
Thanks

A:Changing a program file in x86

Welcome to Seven Forums bushy1. Based on what you have told us, I'd say yes. They are likely files with the exact same name, so the program will just use the new files. Post a link to the instructions if you'd like us to confirm 100%. A Guy

I have dowloaded Serif PhotoPlus 6 and altered a couple of photos. The problem I am having is that every time I "save as", the only options it gives me for file types is .spp or .all files. Even if I choose .all files, it still saves the pic as a .spp. Therefor when I go to open it, it will only open with Serif. This causes a problem cause I can send the pics to anyone else cause then they would not be able to view them.

Does anyone have any suggestions on this? Should I use a different photo editing software? Or is there a way I can simply change the file extention to .jpg or something like that?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Every time I copy a file to a CD-RW or from a CD, the "read only" property is automatically applied to the file. I right click, click properties, uncheck the "read only" box, click apply to all folders and subfolders, then click OK. I close the properties menu, reopen the file properties and find that the "read only" box is again checked. I cannot edit or even delete files so long as it is checked. How do I get the "read only" box unchecked permanently? Thanks.

Hi - go into the folder containing the files and select 0ptions. Uncheck "hide file extensions" and the go to the files and give them a different extension - possibly .tmp - you can then delete them. Just make sure you don't need them first.

just renaming the file extension right?
not the file association (ie which program opens the file)

highlight the file in windows explorer
press F2
change the name/extension to what you want
- may get an error warning about changing extension, ignore it

btw: to change the association
highlight
hold shift key and right click
menu option should include 'open with...'
