vbs or bat file copy / rename based on txt file in that directory

Q: vbs or bat file copy / rename based on txt file in that directory

• I have a network directory that stores photos of individuals in jpg format. There may be only 2 pics of each person, or there may be 7 pics.
• Each persons pics are stored in a randomly named directory / subdirectory. dont have any control over the original program, it's just the way it was written, does not seem to follow any logical pattern, possibly a HEX naming structure based off the date & time, who knows (I will include a sample directory tree at the end of the post).
• Included within each of these created directories, along with the pictures, is a standard text file (filename "B.TXT") which includes the date the picture was taken, the persons name, and other information.
• Each time a person comes in and their picture is taken, the program: (i) creates the random directory (ii) stores the pics (iii) creates the "B.TXT" file with the persons information (iv) generates several other program specific files that I have no need for.
• The program names each of the pictures with the exact same names, which is why they are stored in different directories, so they will not overwrite. The retention period on each individuals directory, pics and files is approximately 40 days.

MFXX0000.jpg (Forward facing)
MLXX0000.jpg (Left facing)
MRXX0000.jpg (Right facing)
STXX0000.jpg (Identifying marks picture 1)
STXX0001.jpg (Identifying marks picture 2)

• As stated above, sometimes there is only the MFXX0000.jpg and MRXX0000.jpg files, but sometimes there is forward, left, right, and multiple STXX files.

I have created a simple batch file with a robocopy command that copies just the jpg and b.txt files and saves them to a desktop computer, this of course, recreates the directory structure as well. I retain the b.txt file so that I will have the persons name and other information to go with the pictures. At least this way I can goto the root directory of the many random subdirectories, and run a search through windows explorer of the "B.TXT" files, searching for the text string of the persons name.
What I am trying to figure out is a simple batch file or script that will do the following:

Search through the root picture directory and sub-directories
Search the "B.TXT" file in each sub-directory for the text that follows the string "NAM = ", store this variable as $NAM
Search the "B.TXT" file in each sub-directory for the text that follows the string "DOE = ", store this variable as $DATE
Rename the MFXX0000.jpg file to "$NAM_$DATE_MFXX_##" (## being sequentially numbered files depending on how many pictures are in that particular directory)
Rename the MRXX0000.jpg file to "$NAM_$DATE_MRXX_##"
Rename the MLXX0000.jpg file to "$NAM_$DATE_MLXX_##"
Rename the STXX0000.jpg file to "$NAM_$DATE_STXX_##"

After this is done, then I can do another simple search for *.jpg files, using windows explorer search, and drag and drop them all into a single directory, and there should not be any duplicate file names.
Currently there are 617 pictures, however there are 617 files named "MFXX0000.jpg", 617 files named "MRXX0000.jpg", and so on.
The move to a single directory for all .jpg files could also be incorporated into the script or batch file, but that issue, once they are renamed, is a simple enough manual fix if need be.

Anyone have any ideas. There are programs out there that will recurse subdirectories, copying and renaming all files and depositing them in a single directory, but none that will search for specific strings within each directory's text file with the naming properties.

I require a batch file or free utility that i can redistribute from my web site to other users, (gamers) that will copy the contents of a directory inside their game to a new location and re-name the directory at the same time. Something like this;

Copy "Genesis\Vehicles\truck\diesel\4tonbaker" to "Genesis\Vehicles\truck\diesel\4tonbutcher"

The batch file needs to be run without the need for a command line box being opened, that is, if the user can double click on it or run it with a 'right click' that would be great. Problem there is, I maybe need an exe file not a batch file. The other part of the problem is that the folder to be copied may or may not be in the same location on every PC that runs the file. It may be the case that the 4tonbaker folder is on;
C:\Genesis\Vehicles\truck\diesel\4tonbaker or
D:Genesis\Vehicles\truck\diesel\4tonbaker or even

and I require the end user to have no need to know, just for the directory to be copied and renamed when and where it is found.

If possible I then want the batch file to perform a second task. I want to distribute a folder, lets say it is 4tonbutcher and in that folder there are files lets say doc1.txt, doc2.txt and doc3.txt

On any given users PC 4tonbaker has these same named files but the content is different to the ones in my folder 4tonbutcher, I want to update the newly created folder, 4tonbutcher with the new txt files I d... Read more

I'm in the process of repair/recovery of my machine (Dell Inspiron 8500 with Windows XP Home, Service Pack 2). I'm following exactly the instructions in:, but a problem has developed. The "software" file (which is the file that the original blue screen error message says is "corrupt, absent or not writable") will not copy to the new tmp directory to create the backup. My understanding from the article is that this backup file (software.bak) will later be used to restore correct settings for various software applications. Since I can't copy it, it appears that I am screwed, no? Or is there a way out somehow?

Thanks to anyone who's been there and can help...

BTW I have the XP installation disk that came with, and a diagnostics disk which I have not yet run.

A:Blue Screen: Registry File Failure; can't copy corrupted file to tmp directory

Never mind, I had it wrong--didn't read the document referred to above carefully enough. The procedure worked like a charm, and the document is very easy to read and entertaining to boot! (pun intended).

The document describes a procedure that closely follows a Microsoft KB document (which I now can't find) but does not contain any warning regarding whether the OS is an OEM (original equipment manufacture) install or not. The Microsoft doc says not to use the procedure on an OEM-installed OS, but I just did it on my Dell, so that warning seems to be incorrect.

Many many thanks for the help provided by this document and this site.

I cannot copy or paste jpeg files from my computer to my SD 2GB cards. Also, I get this msg when I try to print jpeg files. Using Adobe Elements I am able to archive these files. Oddly enough I can attach and send these jpeg files via email. Prior to August '08 was able to do these tasks without a problem. I suspect that there is a software compatibility problem since this problem came on suddenly (maybe iTunes?). No problems importing jpeg files from SD cards. I've looked at several sites on the internet but none seem to have the right solution for my problem. THANKS for any help that you can provide! -Stu

A:Error copying file or folder; cannot copy img the directory or file cannot be created

This has caught me more than once.

The problem is a limitation on the number of files and folders allowed in the root folder of a FAT16 file system (as for a memory card) of 512. (Note, this number is reduced much further if longer file names than 8 characters are used, as most people will want to).

When transferring the files onto the card, new files will be rejected when you hit this limit.

So keep your files in separate folders, so they are not all in the root folder.

For files and folders in root it might be worth keeping your filenames under 8 characters in length so you can use the full 512 files on root folder.

I have used the following registry mod successfully in win XP to add a right click option on a folder to rename m4a (AAC files) to m4b (bookmarked AAC files).

Unfortunately, it is not working in Windows 7 32 or 64 bit. If I open a command prompt in the folder, the rename command works as advertised, but for some reason it won't execute properly from the context menu based on the registry key.

I have a problem copying photos in jpeg; There are about 600 photos in onde folder. When I try to move the photos to an SD card (which I just reformatted), some but not all will copy over. It is not a capacity issue. I receive the message "Cannot copy the file. The directory or file cannot be created." Further, the problem seems to have followed the same files to my external hard drive and a CD! This means I cannot copy from my backup to any other device. Other backup cd's work just fine, and most other photos can be moved about with no issues. I can, however, move the affected files into a zip folder and unzip them. But I am not sure that even worked because there did not appear to be much compression when zipped. In any event, it appears the file itself got corrupted somehow - any ideas?

I use a few different files on a very regular basis. As an example, I have an Excel file that starts out as a template which I then modify to fit the situation. I start by navigating to the location of the "template" (via a shortcut to make it quicker), copying the file and then navigating to the sub directory where I need to copy the file. It's not a huge issue, but I'd love to simply navigate to the sub directory, right click my mouse to bring up the context menu and then click on a button to copy the file to the current sub directory I'm in.

I'm very close, but need help tweaking what I have. I created a bat file that I call from the Context menu (see below for the path I used). It works great, the only problem is that I have to click on a directory for my context button to come up. When I click on it copies my file, not into the directly I've selected, but into the current directory I'm in. This is actually good, because I'd like to be in the directory and then copy the file. The problem arises when I am in a directory that doesn't have a sub directory. In this case I have no directory to right click on and thus, I can't get my menu button to come up. I could go up one directory, click on the one I "really" want to work on, paste my file and then move the file, but I'm sure there is a better way.

Is there a location in registry where I can create a key that will come up when I right click my mouse and bring up the context menu... Read more

A:How to add a button to the context menu to copy a file to a directory

Here are some instructions I've posted to add a batch file to the right click menu. It only appears when I click on a file within a folder as far as I can tell. You can replace my stuff with yours and see what happens.

Add Is this a link to the Windows Explorer right click Context Menu.

Step 1:
Create isItaLink.bat.
Click Start, type notepad and press Enter.
Copy and paste the following RED lines into the Notepad window:

fsutil hardlink list %*

Save the files as isItaLink.bat in a folder you will be keeping.

Step 2:
Create AddisLink.reg as follows:

Click Start, type notepad and press Enter.
Copy and paste the following RED lines into the Notepad window:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

@="Is This a Link"

@="\"C:\\xxxxxxxx\\isItaLink.bat\" \"%1\""

Note: Change xxxxxxxx to the folder you put isItaLink.bat in.

Step 3:
Merge AddisLink.reg into you registry by double clicking on it or right clicking and select Merge.

To use, open Windows Explorer and navigate to the file you are interested in,
Right click on it and select Is This a Link.

A Command Prompt window will open with the results.

Hello everyone,

Firstly I would like to say that this seems like a swell enough forum as is and I am frankly out of ideas. About a year ago I had backed up a rather large series of files under one name for my roommate who was in the process of doing some "spring cleaning" on his computer. Fast forward to now and he is out of Hard-drive space damn near and has been unable to find the reserve file himself. Below is the directory under which I named and saved the around 200gb file of games and old-ROTC documents. Regardless the file needs to be found and even after un-hiding all files from the control panel, I have yet been able to locate it. It would seem to be simple enough, one would think that you could see the file name sitting above Program Files but it is not. Any one have any ideas, we would rather not have to reformat/ system restore if we can avoid it.

So basically (I'll try to be descriptive), I have an Excel file (extension xlsm) on my USB and I right click it, send to --> desktop (create shortcut). I see the shortcut. I right click and attempt to rename it with a different file extension, but the 'Rename' box doesn't show up like I believe it should and the file name changes without the warning. I need to do this for the shortcut I've created, not the file on the USB.

I have 'Hide extensions for known file types' unchecked and 'Display the full path in the title bar' checked, as I believe they should be.

I hope this makes sense and hope someone can help me out here. This has been driving me crazy lately. (Sorry if this is in the wrong section; first post here.)

A:'Rename' box doesn't show up when I rename a file shortcut

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

I'm not sure that I understand - so let me repeat the problem in my words:
file on USB drive
shortcut to that file on desktop
the name of the file on the USB drive changes
you want to change the desktop shortcut so that it works with the file on the USB drive again.

If that is what you want, then:
right click on the shortcut
select "Properties" from the context menu
change the name of the file in the field named "Target:"

...or maybe I got it all wrong...

I'm currently in the process of copying files back from the cloud in the exact same location where I had them before and now it says that the file name is too long and prompts to see whether I want to skip the file or not. The error message given does not
give the full file name or the path so it is impossible to see which files were copied successfully or not. This never happened with XP! Then afterwards I found that some of the files with long names did copy successfully whereas others didn't. I find this
to be a very user unfriendly process and I'm totally confused! These are critical files and I'm sure I haven't exceeded 260 characters or whatever. This is soOoO frustrating!!

A:file copy error message not sufficient + file name too long will not copy

Hi ,

There is a limit of filename length within Windows Explorer. In the Windows API (with some exceptions discussed in the following paragraphs), the maximum length for a path is MAX_PATH, which
is defined as 260 characters.
The shell and the file system have different requirements. It is possible to create a path with the Windows API that the shell user interface is not able to interpret properly.
This means that your long filename can only be handled at the command prompt level and you cannot drag and drop an illegal length filename within Windows Explorer.

Please simplify your folders and titles.

More information, please check the part of Maximum Path Length Limitation in the link below. Cai

I'm having a really strange problem and am wondering if anyone has encountered this. I tried to save a file and got an error on saving it, so I quit the program. The file appears as if it was never saved and doesn't show up in directory listing (GUI or cmd.exe).

However, if I try to rename any other file to that filename, it says "Cannot rename file, because file exists" and appends a number to the end. I cannot remove the number. This happens both in the GUI and cmd.exe as well.

So, basically cmd.exe del says the file does not exist, but ren says a duplicate file name exists....

Tried restarting as well.

I have no idea how to delete that "ghost" of a file so I can actually use the filename. I checked folder options and it's not a hidden file or anything like that - it just (doesn't) exist, but it does?

A:Is there a file recovery software which preserves file names and directory structure?

Hmm; Normally any backup software would do this for you.

If you had a secondary copy (say other media to which you did a copy), then this would be a snap.

It sounds as if you only have the original media and you need to recover "whatever is possible".

I want to periodically make a backup list of all files and directories on my two hard drives and save them to a text file.

I attempted to do this via this command line entry:

dir /b "C:\My Path" > myFiles.txt
And just FYI to everyone, that will not work without CMD.exe being run as an administrator.

But the problem is that the file list will only save for the files in that ONE directory. If you use "C:" in place of "C:\My Path" it just saves a list of files in the root directory only.

I want a log of the ENTIRE hard drive, and then also another hard drive, too
If there is a software that does this reliably, that would be fine, but if anyone is knowledgeable about how
to do it from the command line, then that would be great too.

FAT16 - 512
FAT32 - 65,534
NTFS - 4,294,967,295

If you use long file names for the files and folders (over 8 characters for the file name and 3 for the extension) then the number of files and folders available per folder will be reduced on the FAT16 and FAT32 file systems.

If you need to put more files and folders in a single folder you'll need to convert the drive to NTFS. "

Not certain if that will help, what format is the drive?

I'm trying to copy a VHD (22g, dynamic I think...)

I tried richcopy. It says copy started, but then stops....

I saw someone mention xcopy /j, to achieve the unbuffered I/O perf. you get with richcopy...

it's running, but no indication as to how long it takes (EDIT: just finished, > 10 mins),

what's the syntax for single files?

Can't you just paste the path into the source?

(starts, and stops... any logs?)

A:how do I copy a BIG single file (using richcopy?) big file copy

Use this command if the VHD is sitting on C:

robocopy "C:\Users\yourName\VHD Folder" "S:\Storage Folder" *.* /COPY:DAT /E

Change yourname and replace VHD Folder with the name of the folder where the VHD resides. S:\Storage Folder is where you want to store it.

I would like to create a .bat to copy files from source folder to destination folder.
Some files in source folder already exist in destination folder (Same name)
What I would like is that files existing in destination folder to be rename to f.eks filename_BAK.extension.
Source folder include. FileOne.asp - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt
Destination folder include. FileOne.asp - (NO FileTwo) - FileTree.txt
Result. FileOne.asp (version from source)(Existing renamed to FileOne_BAK.asp) - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt (version from source)(Existing renamed to FileTree_BAK.txt)
Now in desination folder.: FileOne.asp - FileOne_BAK.asp - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt - FileTree_BAK.txt
Files in source folder are placed in different folders, but in same structure in destination.

I have Windows XP-Pro SP2 installed on a P4 1.8GHz CPU with 768MB RAM

I would like a script that opens a commamd window and calls for a file (icon file) to be copied to a specific folder on 5 different drives. I would like to be able to either paste in the file path or drag and drop the file onto the command window. The icon file will always come from the same folder "C:\WINDOWS\system32\00 ICONS\System Folders" and be copied, sometimes replacing a file with the same name, to these 5 folders:

"W:\WINDOWS\system32\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"X:\0 aAPPS\00 a Install First\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"W:\WINDOWS\system32\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"N:\0 aAPPS\00 a Install First\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"D:\0 aAPPS\00 a Install First\00 ICONS\System Folders"

I apologize if I am using incorrect terms. I don't know if a batch file could do this or if it would have to be done with vbs. I would appreciate the help. I know nothing about writng vbs script and only a little about writing batch files.
Thank you.

When I use the XCopy command in Windows 2000, I can copy any file I like; however, when I use copy-and-paste or drag-and-drop in either Windows Explorer or PowerDesk, I get the following error:

Cannot Copy File: Cannot Read from the Source File or Disk

I searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base and came up with only one article, Q224378. This article seems not to apply to my situation because it applies to Windows 2000 Server. I am running Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 2. I did attempt to install the fix that article Q224378 suggested anyway; but, I got an error message that I was attempting to upgrade a program that didn't exist on my system.

I have also learned that this error applies when copying from either of my SCSI CD-ROM drives, not when copying from hard disks or floppies.

Any Suggestions?

Hi All
I have a rather large file system with lots of folders & subfolders. When I want to save previously on Xp operating system I'd search in explorer open the folder I want then copy the address (e.g c:\customer records\client name\job address).
In windows 7, when I copy the folder address i get this "search-ms:displayname=Search%20Results%20in%20electronic%20files&crumb=location:S%3A%5CSEQ%5C011_Estimating %5Celectronic%20files\CHERMSIDE , 17 smith ST"

As you can imagine I cant paste that into a save as field and expect it find the folder location.

Does someone know if it can do what I want? keeping in mind this is about time saving and productivity exercise so I need a simple solution. It is also on a work computer so a lot of settings are locked.

I have the game 'Crysis' on two backup DVD's. I had to put the installation files in a .rar and split them so I could back it up (I downloaded the game digitally from EA)

So when I insert disk 1 and try to copy 'Crysis.part1.rar' to D:/Crysis (D: is my data drive, C: is strictly the OS and maybe 2 or 3 applications installed on it) it copies most of it, but when it gets to '5 seconds remaining' it comes up with this error. It takes like 6 minutes to copy it and then it errors out when it's almost done! I've tried 3 times and the error popped up every time. The disk is spotless... I mean it looks brand new. Not even a speck of dust or any smudges at all.

Why am I getting this error?? I don't know what to do! If I can't copy it I'll have to redownload the entire 6gb installation package from EA, which will take probably 4-5 hours.

Please help!

I'm currently using Richcopy to move about 4TB worth of data from our colo facility (1000 miles away) to our office. And that data also gets routed overseas first before coming back (don't ask). Needless to say, connectivity while not bad, could be better.

The small files are zooming right along, the issue is the larger files (the ones that are hundreds of MB or even several GB).

From time to time, I briefly lose network connectivity for a second or two, when that happens, the files currently being copied abort and once connectivity is restored, Richcopy just moves on to the next files. So when Richcopy advertises that it 'resumes', it seems it is talking about resuming a file copy queue, and not resuming partially copied files. Those have to start over from the beginning.

Is there a tool similar to Richcopy with the functionality I'm looking for?

Quite often I receive a PDF file by email (e.g. a monthly bill) that I want to save with similar PDF files (e.g. former bills of the same company) in the same folder.

To avoid to write the complete file name, in the "save as..." menu I click on a former file with similar name (e.g. phone_bill_2013_January), then adapt the name (e.g. phone_bill_2013_February).

When I click "save", windows vista says "files already exists" although I modified the name.

I saw on that this problem was already discussed:

and it seems that this bug was already fixed.

How can I fix it on my computer?

Thank you very much for help.

A:Get "file already exists" on trying to save a new file (after rename)

Hello Abramo, and welcome to Vista Forums.

The issue is that it uses the original name when comparing files in the save to location. It doesn't actually get renamed until it's saved.

You should be able to use the "Copy, but keep both" option like below for this work. Worse case, you'll have to rename it again if it does keep the new name after being copied.

Hope this helps,

Hey guys

I need to rename an ISO files. I have 2 files which I need to mount, this isn't an issue as I'm using Virtual Clone Drive. The installer looks for a file name "DVD1" and then when that part of the installation is done it looks for "DVD2" however on the 2nd ISO file when looking in My Computer it isn't called "DVD2" it is just an assortment of numbers. Unlike the first file which was called "DVD1".

So the installer can't find the file I'm guessing, and I don't how to rename the mounted file to be called "DVD2".

I am in need of help as this has got me stressed! I've looked all over and haven't found anything useful.

A:Rename ISO file

It sounds like the label in the ISO file needs changing to 'DVD2'. To do that is to re-create the ISO image as a new file.

1. Mount the old ISO using VCD.
2. Create a blank folder on the hard disk
3. Copy contents of the mounted ISO to the new blank folder
4. Load a CD/DVD burning program that can save to an image e.g. Burn and start a new project or image
5. Add the contents of the folder with the files in it to the project
6. Set the label of the new project/image as DVD2
7. Write/burn the new project to a new ISO file.

From the research I have done, it seems you can not do it, even in the Microsoft site, makes me think a person can not do it safely, unless you reinstall Windows. A:Rename A System File

Generally it's very difficult to do - but it should be possible.

First, copy the information from that profile that you want to save.
Go into the properties of the folder and remove the Read Only attribute. You may have to use the Command Prompt to remove the "system" attribute. And, you may have to mess with the security settings to give yourself permission to do this.
Then try delete the profile in User Accounts.
Then use the Recovery Console to delete or rename the offending structure (I haven't tried this part). There are also various utilities for renaming/moving/deleting "protected" files.

Hi guys, does anyone know how I can rename a file if I don't know the original filename?

I have a new file coming into a folder every day, it's the only file in that folder as it automatically gets cleared every night at midnight. What I want to do is rename that file to something and copy it to another location before the clean out happens. The filename changes every day to match the date so I can't know the filename beforehand. The filename coming in has this naming convention: filename_day-month-year (filename_25-02-2009).

Any help would be appreciated.

A:Rename a file if I don't know the original filename?

if you don't see the filetype like;
you should be able to just rename it

but if you see a file like this
make sure to keep the ".html" part of it the same after renaming it

Does anyone know of a good program (ideally inexpensive or free) or way to rename a small or large group of files in Windows Vista & 7 according to various criteria, of course without renaming each file one at a time? Thanks.

A:Bulk File Rename Software

Thanks for the fast response. Both of these look promising. I will check them out more later & pick one.

Hello, i am new to this forum. i have arrived here looking for a solution to this problem. i have some .avi files i wish to organize/rename/move. however if i try any of those things i get a message "file in use close all other programs.." blah blah if you don't know what message i'm speaking of you prob cna't help anyway.

so i restart hoping it won't open that prog, but it does, so i go into task mngr and close all uneccessary processes, but i still get this message. any ideas?

also i've been reading posts, lots of talk about hijackthis. what is it, whats does it do, and where can i get it?

A:File rename/move prob

I dont have a direct link for hijackthis right now becus im not using a pc, but hijackthis records all your processes and registry keys and makes them in text forum so you can post them up so people can see it, and tell you what my be viruses, or so on.

My suggestion if you have already tried closing suspicious items in your processes is to go to
its an online scanner for computers and its free. Because I feel that if you havent open the files, then something is running in your processes that you dont notice.

Just my 2 cents

I have several "Discography" folders for my music. That is to say that I arrange these folders by artist name, within which I arrange subfolders by year of album release.

So, let's say for my Van Halen folder, I'll have various subfolders listed as such:
[1978] Van Halen
[1979] Van Halen II
[1980] Women and Children First
[1981] Diver Down
[1983] 1984 on and so forth.

Every so often, I'll have a bunch of folders that are named accordingly:

(1985) 5150
(1988) OU812
(1991) For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge

See the difference? I want to batch rename the parentheses into square brackets. But with several thousand such folders, I want to be able to just indicate that I want the "()" to be changed to "[]".

Is there any software or otherwise some sort of Windows XP shortcut that I can use to do that?

Thanks in advance!

A:rename a vista ultimate sys file

Hello Isnoend09,

You will need to take ownership of the file first, then you should be able to rename it if it is not in use.

Hope this helps,

I have a problem here, a small problem but i'll ask anyway.

I have 1 video file ( .MKV ), 398mb, which i put in my desktop recently and i just noticed the file cant be renamed or moved because it says the file is open in Windows Explorer. This never happened before, i have like hundreds of similiar video files which same file format, and this video file is the only one giving me problem.

So what i did was, i open the Task Manager, i see there's 2 Explorer.exe in running processes, so i end task for all Explorer.exe's .Then i start the process again, but nothing changed. I still cant rename/move the file.

I also taken the ownership of the file, make sure all the permissions is correct and still to no avail.

So i download Unlocker, and managed to kill all the processes that locking the file from being renamed. I was able to rename/move the file, but only for few seconds before the process Explorer.exe 'using' the file again. So each time i need to move/rename the file, i have to do it using Unlocker. But what concerns me was, i saw alot of Explorer.exe with different Handle locking the file each time i view from Unlocker.

At first, i saw explorer.exe and the other one is Explorer.EXE ... im not sure if it makes any difference, im telling anyway just in case. But there's only one explorer.exe in C:\Windows when i browse the folder. I already upload and scan the file at Jotti File Scan and it was clean.

So any idea guys?

A:Cannot Rename/Move .MKV File Because Explorer.EXE is using it!

Hello and welcome.

I'll do my best to help you fix this up.

Before providing you with the technical fix, I'd like to ask you to restart your operating system and try to delete the MKV file right after; this may be helpful; if it wasn't, then follow these steps to fix this up:

* Press Alt + F, from the Windows 7 Explorer interface
* Select Tools
* Select Folder Options
* Select the View tab
* Check the box that says "Always show icons, never thumbnails"

You should be able to delete the file now.

Please give this a try and let us know if it was helpful.

Create your installation media here:
Even if you have not updated to 8.1 I would expect the above to work, as 8.1 was after all a free update.
However, I have not tested and have not Web searched for results.

Need to share folders across a network such that specific users (defined by me) have permission to read, create new sub-folders + files and modify them, but not delete anything. I set up file sharing using settings under Advanced button in Security tab: ALLOW for everything except Delete Subfolders & Files, Delete, Change Permissions and Take Ownership. These are under DENY. I have tried with and without inherit permissions, yet the users I have given these permissions to are able to create files and folders but cannot change the name from "default folder" or "new text document.txt". If I remove the DENY then they do have permission to rename, but also to delete, which I don't want to give. AM running Win XP Pro SP3.
Any help appreciated!

What's the difference between "modify" and "delete"? Seems to me that if they can do one, they can do the other.

I just joined and looking forward to learning.

I just realized today that there will be files I have now or will be creating, consisting of "Office" Kingsoft Office, digital photographs, etc., files which I would prefer not to have my name showing in the file properties information, such as what's shown in properties>details>author. System administrator, PC's model name administrator, etc., include my name. My name is spelled there the same as what's shown during the windows 7 logon screen when it asks for the password.

I've had this PC for a few years and I assume I set what my administrator name is when I first set it up. I also assume every file I ever created since has my name shown in it that way. Security issues being what they are today, this may not be a good idea so I want to change my name in the file properties or even better, not have any name at all. I'd also rather be able to do this individually on a file by file basis for some files I may send to people I don't know well or their security habits.

How do I change or remove my name from file properties information?

Thank you.

A:How to rename author in individual file properties.

In the properties under details there should be an option that removes all that information...

However, not currently at a computer to see myself.

Since 2 days, in a certain folder, I cant rename, move or delete folders or files. Now, it has spread to my desktop as well. If I rename a folder, even a new folder, the name changes ''magically'' within seconds to restore to its previous name. If I move the folder or file, it comes back and if I delete it, it restores. I tried to make a system restore, even format (!), the problem persists. HELP?!

I ran Combofix trying to regain control of my old Dell XPS Gen 5.
The only problem is that to took all of my programs and dumped then into a quarantined folder with a .vir extension.
I tried to fix it with advice on another forum and they said you have to convert them all back manually.
Is that really true?
Why won't there be a batch converter to restore them to what they were before Combo fix problem occurred?
I still think it's infected, but at this point I'd rather get all my files back first.
The infection seems to reside in the svchost process somewhere... as it sucks up resources.
I've taken it off the net till I can get it straightened out.

Any help would be much appreciated.
