Faded Sticker... Help

Q: Faded Sticker... Help

My computer has recently died the death (multiple errors) and a techy friend of mine has recommended reinstalling Windows.

My problem is that the sticker with the product key on is faded all to heck and unreadable.
Is there any way to reinvigorate the sticker? The top barcode is still visible if that is of any use.

Alternatively I have an old dud laptop (also dead, I think the motherboard burnt out) which was on Vista. The sticker on this one is perfectly visible. Would I still be able to create a vista installation media and then perhaps upgrade to Windows 10.

I really don't want to have to purchase a new version of windows for the sake of a faded sticker.

Thanks in advance guys.

A: Faded Sticker... Help

Windows will be tied to the hardware
Vista is not free to upgrade to W10

if you have the recovery DVDs for the PC you may not need the Key
Also the recovery partition may still be working and you may be able to recovery using that

whats the make and exact model of the PC

Hi everyone

I think that this is a popular error among win users. turned on the laptop to find not genuine message

I have used many key extractors to no avail.

The unfortunate thing is that my COA sticker is faded.

I have some registry backups, backup files, and toshiba hdd recovery files but i dont know if its possible to extract the key

have run malwarebytes in safemode to find monetizer and tarma PUPs

A:Windows not genuine Error-COA sticker faded

Please post an MGADiag report - without that, we're just guessing in a data-vacuum.

Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/234159-windows-genuine-activation-issue-posting-instructions.html

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

My computer died so we have reinstalled Windows only problem is though is the activation code that
comes with the computer has faded off and the stickers all kinda weird.

Microsoft have told me to ask toshiba if they can track which activation code was for my computer (I think it registered the computer serial info when I first got it). I can't find a way to ask Toshiba unfortunately.

Help? I can't afford to buy it again. I already paid as part of the computer cost.

A:Re: I need to activate Windows but my code sticker has faded

Hi

> I can't afford to buy it again. I already paid as part of the computer cost.
You are right about that. Toshiba offers notebook with preinstalled operating system and when you buy notebook you pay for hardware, preinstalled software and valid licence for this preinstalled OS.
Please note this product key belongs to preinstalled OS version and it is not some kind of ?universal? key that you can use for activation if you use own OS version.

When you buy new notebook recovery image is saved on HDD as backup. This allows notebook owner to reinstall original recovery image ans start to use notebook with ?factory settings? again.
In case that HDD is defective or owner hat installed own OS version this recovery image will not be usable anymore.

To avoid this situation Toshiba has preinstalled small ?Toshiba recovery media creator? to allow notebook owner to create recovery media as DVD or USB and make recovery image back-up.
This recovery media is bootable device and recovery image can be installed without any problem.

If you check user?s manuals document that you got with your notebook you will see that the whole theme is described there. With other words every notebook owner is informed about all this.
Due to all these reasons recovery media creation is very important.

Back to your problem: after reading your posting I don't know what is your problem exactly and I don't know if HDD is defective but I presume you didn?t create this recovery media, ri... Read more

I bought a new acer comp from tesco, but no coa sticker on the back.anyone knows how can i get a copy of the original product key. Thanks

A:No coa sticker

A Certificate of Authenticity (COA) is a label that is used to identify genuine Microsoft Windows software. The COA included with Acer products is not used to reinstall the operating system. If your computer is shipped with windows 8 or 8.1, the Product key is electronically stored in the firmware of your mainboard. This is one of Microsoft's security measures to reduce piracy. So if you need to reset or reinstall Windows 8, you don't need to hunt for the product key. It's automatically applied and activated. That's certainly a plus, especially when the numbers on those product key stickers wear out or are just too small to easily read.   Click the Kudos to say ?Thanks? for helping! select "Accept Solution" if your issue is resovled.

Quick Question:

I got a new motherboard and there's a sticker on the back of it. I peeled it off but now there's bits of it stuck on the motherboard. Mostly over the small lines, i think the bus lines.

Is this fine?

A:Sticker on Motherboard?

Stickers and paper are not conductive so yes that's fine. Also the traces on the motherboard are not exposed and are covered. You could use isopropyl alcohol to gently clean it if you wanted but be carefully that you don't introduce static electricity through your body to the board.

"Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1

Is what Magic Jelly Bean Keyfinder says. The system won't boot, and the COA is mostly unreadable. The key that MJB keyfinder gives me is clearly different from what is on the COA on bottom of laptop. So I first loaded Win 7 HP 64 bit, and got an Activation error, so I reinstalled using Win 7 HP 32 bit, and got the same error. Both installs were done with OEM discs. The machine was working prior to HDD failure, she just doesn't remember what exactly the OS was. What are her/my options to get her up and running without repurchasing a new COA.

Thanks,

I've been using Linux for a while exclusively lately due to some heavy issues I had with Vista a few months ago. While I was running Linux I decided to make my laptop OS Neutral. I Removed the Windows sticker, sanded down the windows key, and removed the OEM Windows Sticker on the bottom. My questions are:

1. Is it legal to remove this sticker?

2. Without the code that is on the sticker, will I still be able to use the Upgrade Disc to Windows 7 since my Vista will still pass WGA or do I need the codes that were on the sticker?

(PS. If it was illegal then this whole situation is hypothetical)

A:Laptop OEM Sticker

LOL, hello Marty.

It is perfectly legal to do remove the sticker and make any kind modifications like that to your legally purchased computer.

However, I would strongly recommend that you at least write down the product key number on that sticker somewhere safe in case you ever decided to reinstall and activate Vista with it on that same computer.

Hi,

I just want to throw in a disclaimer that this may sound like a paranoid question.

That said, I recently purchased a new Asus ROG notebook. I'm loving it and it's running all my games and apps smoothly. However, I noticed that right out of the box it has this weird residue above the intel sticker. I've attached an image to show what I'm talking about. I've been reading that laptops can have toxic chemicals in them and I don't know much about quality control standards overseas.

Does anyone have an idea of what the residue might be? I thought that the glue on back of these stickers were concise so it didn't make sense for the glue to just spread upwards, if it is glue at all.

A:Sticker Residue, What Is It?

just rub it off, stop worrying over nothing.

I have an acer chromebook 13 CB5-311.  After watching someone replace a harddrive on a C720P, I realized they removed a acer sticker that was placed over a screw on the back cover.  They said if you remove this sticker it would void your warranty because it lets acer know your computer has been tampered with.  So I turned over my chromebook and I noticed all my phillip head screws were visible.  Should my CB5-311 have a acer sticker over one of the screws?

A:How to get new Windows Code sticker?

Maybe it sounds stupid now but this sticker is useless. It is just evidence that you got valid product key with your recovery image. I write recovery image because this product key belongs OS version that you got with your notebook.
Do you have original recovery installation disc? If yes you don't need the key because recovery image can be installed 1000 times and every time preinstalled version will be activated properly.

With other words nobody will send you the key that you got on the sticker. The product key is implemented in original recovery image and cannot be used in case that you want to activate any other Microsoft OS version.

Our non-profit organization just received some donated HP computers. The donor stated that these computers had factory-installed Windows XP operating systems, but the hard drives were all wiped clean before the computers were given to us. Each computer has its own Windows XP key code sticker.

Here's the problem: We tried installing XP from an OEM CD using the key codes on the stickers. The codes are being rejected. Naturally, we asked the donor if they had a reinstallation disk. He said that the computers were purchased pre-loaded with no disks.

How do we get the OS to recognize these keys as valid?

A:Xp Key Code From Sticker Invalid.

Have you contacted Microsoft regarding this? If the product codes are real then there shouldn't be any problem getting help from them, they may even provide you with new codes.

Hey everyone, I use the sticker labels quite a bit, and I was wondering if the added thickness is OK to play in a slot inserted CD Player, like the in-dash CD changers in cars? Would the added thickness cause the CD to get stuck?

Also, is it OK to put sticker labels on CD-Rs with Printable Surfaces? I read some where that its bad to do this with Printable Surfaces, because its easy for the label to peel off or something.

I'd love to hear peoples' experiences with Label Stickers, good or bad...Thanks!

I thought the clean install of Windows 7 (x64) on my son's Acer Aspire laptop had gone OK but I reckoned without Microsoft's activation. I ran the install using a retail disc which came with another computer.

Before running the install I took the precaution of running Belarc Advisor on the laptop to check the W7 licence key was the same as the one on the sticker. It turned out to be completely different, although both keys are in the normal XXXXX-*5 format.

Windows activation will not accept either key, but gives a different error for the two. When I try the sticker key it says

Invalid product key. The product key you have entered does not appear to be a valid Windows 7 product key. Please check your product key and type it again.

Hi again!

I have a question regarding the product key 'sticker' located underneath laptops and/or the side of your desktop. Before i begin, let me just say that the question(s) below are basically just out of curiosity (for now). It sure will come in handy in future if i need to perform such action(s).

Back on topic. I'll be using a laptop as an example in this post.
Scenario: So let's say my HDD died and there's no possible way to send it (to the manufacture) for repairs or perform a data recovery on the drive as it's too heavily damaged. I then purchase a brand new HDD to replace it. The 'original' HDD of course contains the 'recovery manager' (on a separate partition) for us to perform a clean install/repair (plus the drivers, etc). By replacing the HDD, it's obvious that i no longer have the 'recovery manager/partition' as it's brand new (and oh, i didn't have a recovery CD/DVD too in this example).

Question: Is it possible for me to use a friends' Windows DVD (of the same OS and 'type' such as Home, Professional, ultimate, etc) and perform a clean install but instead of using the key which came with the DVD, I'll be using the product key located underneath the laptop? Will it work?

Every DVD are the same right? Or perhaps each DVD require it's own specific keys?
If i can't, you could stop reading here.
If i could, other than having to install the drivers myself (as opposed to the 'recovery manager' method where it'll install the drivers automatically since it's n... Read more

A:Question Regarding Product Key (sticker)

Yes, you can use a friend's dvd and install the SAME edition that came preinstalled on your computer, then activate online with the sticker key. If that doesnt go through (normally it does), just call MS and they'll activate for you. You'll still be genuine after all this.

The best way to preserve the recovery partition is to make recovery disks using the recovery manager software on the OEM computer. Running these disks on a new hdd can be tricky at times- you may need to create a minimum no. of partitions or go through some other loops for it to work. It depends on the OEM brand. You can also copy and save the recovery partition on an external drive, the specifics again depend on the oem brand.

I have some new G-skill 1066 Mhz RAM. My motherboard has the voltage at 1.8V. The RAM spec voltage is 2.0-2.1V. I have set this at 1.9V but am wondering if going to 2.0 or 2.1V would be a good idea. I have seem some tutorials and 2 page long papers on overclocking RAM but this is more simple. Is it better to have RAM voltage set to spec or leave it at "normal" or "auto"

A:Adjusting RAM voltage to sticker on RAM

As far i know.

More RAM voltage = higher frequencies that the memory can reach and lets you use minor CAS latency than default. For example: the memories by default are set to 1.8v and 5-5-5-18 CAS latency, if you set them to 2.0-2.1 you can use a lesser latency like 4-4-4-12.

I hope you understand and I am sorry for my bad english.

there are special cleaning fluids for computers and hifi available in computer stores. important is that they do not contain alcohol!

Run a full scan with Malwarebytes in Safe Mode if necessary, followed by your AV full scan. I'd also run a full scan with SUPERAntiSpyware - Downloads which digs out spyware that remains after uninstall in registry.

Then run SFC /SCANNOW Command.

If this doesn't repair it update your Display driver, seeing if a new one is provided by Windows Updates after enabling Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3)

You can also try System Restore to before the problem began, if necessary from System Recovery Options

If that fails, uninstall the display driver and reinstall it by restarting the PC.

I just found this board, hope someone can help me. I bought a refurb Thinkpad 600e about 3 months ago and the LCD took a little time to get bright, it would start out orange when first turned on but looked fine within a few seconds.
Now the LCD can only very faintly can be seen, more like just a shadow, no color, black. It works fine with another monitor.
The cable to the LCD looks a little chewed, any thoughts?

Thanks,
ladyelaine

Is anything else faded? Or is it just videos? Are these downloaded videos? DVD's or Are they streaming videos? (ex) YouTube etc? Do you have a separate video card? or are you using the onboard VGA? Have you updated your video driver?
Have you updated adobe flashplayer, shockwave, and java?
Have you tried a different monitor?

My computer blue screened yesterday saying something about free space on the disk which didn't make sense cause i still have 50% space available. I restarted and it seemed like I had a virus, so I did a system restore to a couple days before. Ever since then a lot of icons/folders appear faded. I know this is because they are hidden but before this blue screen/restore happened the folders and icons that are now faded weren't. I have never seen one icon/folder on my computer that appeared faded or dimmed and now they are, so is there any way I can change this back?

A:Faded Icons

There's clearly something still wrong with your computer, and having multiple folders and files marked as Hidden is just another symptom. I would suggest posting a HijackThis log in the security forum.

Hello,
I run win 7 64. My browser is FireFox. One day i started my my computer and texts were washed out. Most of the black and white text on my computer screen has faded. If there were a contrast adjustment I would fix it in a second. Let me say here that it is not my monitor. It has nothing to do with desktop settings. I have been through the posts and tried using all the suggestions. It is the same on FireFox and when fire fox is closed.

Dropdown menus are faded. My word processor texts are faded. On this page as i write this, all of the small black and white text such as, "Logged in as angster", "Use a title that describes your problem......." etc are faded.
All of the "Do Not capitalize" etc are faded. The text I am writing now is Not faded.
Can someone please help me?
Thanks

The problem i have is i only have 3 days before i need to activate and the sticker on the bottom is so badly faded i cant make out what the product key is!

is there any way i can recover this product key to legally activate this OEM laptop?

Hello all,

I recently purchased a computer from CowBoom and it states that it comes with a BIOS sticker located near the battery. When I boot up the computer, I get the following message "press any key to boot from floppy mbr error". I have the product key from underneath but anything I try to press doesn't seem to work.

I tried pressing F2 as soon as the Toshiba symbol pops up but this gives me a blue screen with a large gray box that just gives me info about the computer's SSD, date, time, etc. F12 brought up a small gray box that gave some information about the hard drive and somewhere it states "enter setup" but when I press enter nothing happens. I am in desperate need of some help as this is a birthday gift to give someone in the next few days. Thanks.

If your Windows Product Key label is worn off or unreadable you can forget about getting any help from Dell or Microsoft. You are basically on your own. Microsoft will send you to Dell. Dell will send you to Microsoft. Microsoft will try to charge you money. Dell will try to charge you money. You will spend an hour chasing your tail and you will get nowhere.
It's a very simple and very common problem. It is bewildering to me that there is not some sort of procedure in place to deal with a worn off or unreadable COA label.

So I got a laptop around a year ago or so, maybe a bit longer, and replaced Windows 7 with Ubuntu fairly quickly. Well now the lack of video game support for Ubuntu has made me regret it, so I plan on reinstalling Windows 7 and simply giving it a tiny partition of the HDD. My question is how to use the product key I found on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop. I don't have any sort of recovery CD or anything for Windows 7 that I could use, and obviously every trace of it has been wiped from the drive. I considered grabbing one of the cracked versions off of a torrent site and using my recovery key, as it would still be fully legal then seeing as I merely need the install, but I figured it would be better to ask around here and see if there were a way to get a clean install of it simply less the product key. I really haven't found any way to get an install disc unless I buy a new copy outright.

A:Reinstalling Windows 7 with product key sticker

hi Neoncamouflage, and welcome to sevenforums,

you can download a legitimate iso from here.

as a side point, you say you're interested in playing games, and are going to give win 7 a 'tiny portion of the HDD'.

be aware that many modern video games contain a lot of multimedia data, and install sizes of 10 gigs or more per game are not uncommon.

Hi,

I had Win 7 Installed last year, only I just had to do some upgrades to the PC, which involved a re-installation of Windows 7. In this entire process I've lost the sticker that was attached to my Case, and I want to know what I can do to recover it...

I have the original CD with me, along with all the CD keys and such on the box, just not the actual serial.

Can I email all the CD keys to Microsoft and hope they can get my PC authenticated on their end? or am i basically screwed. Also, if I weren't able to activate windows, what exactly would happen? I found a bunch of information of what happened in Vista, not sure if it's the same for Windows 7.

Thanks in advance

A:Lost Serial Sticker... any hope?

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Do you have the retail version of Windows or an OEM version?

You mention serial numbers, do you mean the Product Key or the Product ID, which determines whether you have an OEM system or not.

I'm surprised the sticker has fallen off the case, it's normally fixed solid.

Try Belarc Advisor, it takes an inventory of your system, including your Product Keys.

noticed that the Microsoft Product Key sticker on the back has faded to a point that I can't read it.
Is there anywhere in the OS that I can find that number ? I only ask in the case that if I ever have to reload the OS back on

Hi all -
I just recently discovered my laptop hard drive was bad (thanks to this site) and purchased a replacement. The fun new problem I just discovered tonight while beginning to install Windows 7 to the new HD is that my product key is worn off and majority of the numbers are unreadable. I bought the laptop from an old friend and with it came only a burned Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit install disc. I no longer talk with this person so can't ask if they happen to have anything still with the product key for this laptop on it (probably not anyway). What options do I have at this point to obtain this product key...or another if I must. I tried researching my possibilities through Google, forums, etc but my head is spinning from the numerous different answers I came across, many of which seemed to be contradicted and said to "not work", for example, many said to call Microsoft and explain the situation in order to get a new product key, while others said this becomes a long waste of time and you end up with nothing. Obviously, aside from the laptop itself and anything I can gather that's on its bottom case, I don't have other documentation or what not that Microsoft supposedly asks for. Ideally it'd be great to avoid calling Microsoft altogether, which is why I'm posting...to see if I have any options.

Thanks in advance

I have a bad feeling I could be really hosed...Less than a year ago, I scrimped and saved to buy my 12 yo a nice new laptop. Recently, it started randomly restarting. I know overheating can cause this, but that didnt seem to be the problem. Then the laptop just died altogether. Lights in front turn on, but nothing on screen. Still under warranty, so I go to ooen a case and...no sticker on the bottom, therefore cant determine SNID or S/N. Possibly my daughter removed it, not knowing it's important. I found a 22-digit number on the battery and entered that as the serial number, but that apparently isnt it. I have the receipt and packing list. I'm really hoping there's some way we can still take advantage of the warrantly, but I have no idea how...

Hello,
I would like to remove the large square sticker from the left side of the touchpad without scratching the surface. Is this sticker supposed to be permanent or can it be removed? I have tried to peel it off at the corner, but it does not want to come off. I don't want to damage to corner, if it is supposed to stay put. If I peel it off, will it leave a mark?

This is a trivial question, but I appreciate an answer in order to avoid making a mistake.

hello

since long time I have not bought laptop. I decided to buy one after my previous laptop has got serious failures. I bought a dell inspiron 5555 with windows 8.1 preinstalled on it and activated.

in my previous laptop , there was a windows vista home licence stuck on its back, but this new one from dell, has nothing with it at all. I saw people here talking about battery side, but I opened the battery I found nothing.
I have now 2 questions
1-in the preinstalled versions of windows, is this normal not to have a licence sticker??
2- if somewhere I am asked to show that this laptop has a legal copy of windows, how can I do this without a sticker?

A:question about licence sticker issue

Hi MFALCON1.,
Up until Windows 7, the system would carry Microsoft Authentication sticker.
However, from Windows 8.1 onwards, Windows licensing is managed with Digital Product Key by Microsoft, which means, the product key is digitally injected onto the motherboard. This is for all OEM systems.
Read more here - http://dell.to/2bbjoXN
If you still need to know the product key - see this article - http://bit.ly/1CI6FAP
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.

The product key on the sticker on the bottom of my laptop has become unreadable, I also don't have the key used on any current installation of windows, and to my knowledge the key is not stored in bios or anything like this. I'd given up on it as the key was for a foreign language version of windows that I didn't want anyway but now I want to use it to install windows 10.

I've taken a macro photo of it and enhanced it as much as I could and have a good idea for most of the code, although the last 10 digits are pretty worn out so I am not sure. The bar code above it also seems in usable condition, although I don't know if it is possible to get the code back from this.

Does any anyone have any suggestions? Does microsoft have any page where I could "try" possibilities of the key to see if I could guess it right from what is left of the sticker?

Also does anyone have any idea what on earth the 10th to last character is on the sticker? This is the one I really don't have a clue what it is.

A:Damaged windows 7 product key sticker. What can I do?

Download Produkey. The key on the sticker would not work anyway. Microsoft quit using the COA sticker for activation a long time ago. The key on an OEM computer is not the same as what is shown on the sticker. The key that Produkey finds works with the SLIC table in BIOS to automatically activate the computer when using the OEM recovery disks.

I would also backup your activation files with Advance Token Manager which will also give you the key.

Hi,

My laptop has the code Windows 7 Pro OA and the license key underneath, printed on the sticker.

I have a different hard drive installed now as the original wasn't very big. I downloaded the Ultimate x64 Version and it is working but will run out of license soon.

Can I use the code to activate the version installed? If not could I downgrade or alter the version without reinstalling? If not please can you tell me if I download another version which one do I need and will it just activate straight away?

Thanks R2

A:Sticker on underside of Laptop - Win7 Pro OA

There is no sae/approved way to downgrade Ultimate to Pro- you'll have to reformat and reinstall using the proper media.
If you have the Pro Key, you need the Pro media (32-bit or 64-bit) although you can delete the ei.cfg file from the download you have already to enable all versions to be installed.

I have this Lenovo Y560 laptop which cam pre-installed with Windows 7 Home Premium Build 7600. Had been using this laptop for three years now. I made the recovery disks using its One Key Recovery software a long time back. But these disks are unusable right now A month back I started having frequent BSODs (Ox116?)
and sudden blackout after windows log-in . But after restarting for 3-4 times, my laptop used to work fine for a day or two and suddenly the problems started again. So I formatted my hard-drive with gparted leaving aside the LENOVO_PART hidden partition containing back-ups. But I thought of doing a clean reinstall. So I followed the a guide for oem installlation in the forum and used the key which I got from using Magic JellyBean Keyfinder since the COA sticker has almost faded dude to my rough usage, I never paid attention to thhis sticker . But when I called Microsoft to activate, they said that key is blacklisted ( I was like WTF?) The guy almost became rude and told me you are using a pirated copy and the key is available online. I googled the key and HELL! They were true, apparently there were many other of those "OEM KEYS FOR IBM-LENOVO". So I had no other choice but to boot to the recovery partition and use the factory default image, but its not working anymore throwing up errors since I had changed the original partition sizes. Will the Microsoft guys give me a another product key for this installation or I have to resort to paying for recovery d... Read more

Now, on the right half of each printout, no matter what colours are there, its allways the yellow that is faded on the right side, other colors on the right side are ok. And on the left side ALL colours are ok including yellow.

Any ideas on what maybe casing this?

On B/W lasers it means the toner is running low on one side of the cartridge, so you take it out (the cartridge) and shake it a bit to distribute the remaining toner evenly.

I can print pictures from other software on my computer, from the internet, etc, with great photo quality. When I print from Windows photo gallery they are very light and faded looking. I have made sure the adjustments are for my printer.

It seems that most of the people experiencing this problem had canon printers. Does anyone have a solution to this?

I can switch the power on and the fan goes....the monitor that had a bright yellow light switches to a basicly very dim flickering light....I just established that the Graphics Card fan is going .......and I tried F8 on startup but nothing....Lately I have had a problem with my cat dancing on the keyboard but she is deaf and takes no notice of my howls of frustration.....So this one has got me stumped....
However Prior to the black screen ...I recall I was having big problems with Firefox and Chrome ...both started crashing as soon as I tried to load in a web site...later both would not open at all.....I recall rebooting and I had my normal screen with my shortcuts then later I had no shortcuts just my screen picture and then later again the black screen

Could anybody please offer any suggestions ....Could it be a Virus?? Thanks for any info ....MK

I think it would be worth seeing if it will run another OS booting from the DVD

do you have another PC that works and has a DVD writer - you could then create a UBUNTU DVD to run from the machine
that will see if there is a hardware issue at all ?
or if its a windows or harddrive issue

Do you have a set of recovery DVDs ?

quite a long post of instructions here
------------------------------------------------------------------------

UBUNTU Stand Alone DVD

Note the latest version of UBUNTU needs a DVD to use and boot from

if you only have CDs then you can use an older version, version 10 or 11 from this archive list
http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/

It may be possible to boot from another Operating System
This will at least test the Hardware and also see if you can see the Harddrive and possibly get any of your data off.

If you have another PC with a DVDwriter and spare DVD
Download the ISO http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

UBUNTU version 14 http://releases.ubuntu.com/14.10/
For almost all PCs. The following ISO 32Bit image will work on most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows, as well as newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processors.

You can also run from a USB device now - if the Machine supports booting off a USB Stick

Also, does it ever actually download the codecs, or do you get an error?

Greeting. I've been experiencing an issue, and I finally wanted to ask about it.

Thing is: Sometimes (typically "arrow" shapes) have a "fade" effect on their sides. I'd give an example of a popular website that shows these issues, but now that I'm looking for one I can't find any. (Typical, huh?)

Well I recently tried WaniKani and it's very pronounced there. I made a screenshot comparing it with IE. What I use there is WaterFox (my learning browser) which is basically FireFox, my main browser is PaleMoon, which is basically also FireFox and It has the same Issues. Only addon I use is adblock, plugin-wise I have the usual: Flash, Java, VLC.

Any Ideas what it could be, and how I could fix it?

Hi,

I recently installed Windows 8. However, the customization options in "Change PC Settings" are all faded out and I'm unable to click any of the colours/pictures.

I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong, and if there's a possible solution?

Thanks for any help.

A:Customization options faded out.

Does it say something about needing to activate your copy of Windows 8? You may need to check and make sure you're activated.

I search and have found nothing related to my problem. My PC starts fine but after a few seconds the taskbar dims. Whats wrong?

XP Pro
version 2002
SP3

Thank you in advance for all your help.

A:Taskbar is faded or dimmed...

That is odd, but it appears that the Firefox status bar is transparent and is on top of the taskbar. Is your taskbar's "keep on top of other windows" option on?

Hi,
I am trying to create a faint background image which fades into a white page color. The image is a rose and I will be placing text over the top of it.
I am using Fireworks as it will be a dynamic html page with mouse rollovers and hyperlink, etc...
I am making the rose image around 20% transperant and then adding feathering but this produces a really poor quality image, is there a better way ?
I dont have photoshop.

Thanks,

A:Faded Background quality

Hi all,is there a way to order new original sticker for Lenovo G580 (like this one on picture)?I have new, very good G580 laptop (model 20150) and I am very satisfied. I replaced the CPU and put the new i7 3610QM in it, 8GB of RAM and SSD. The only thing that tore and which bothers me is sticker. xDIf anyone from Lenovo can help me with this, I would be grateful.

A:Lenovo G580 - where to order original sticker?

Hi Wind,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums.

It really feels something amazing when people are concerned about stickers more than issue. I can honestly say that i haven't tried it. However if you asked me to guess I would suggest you to contact the nearest service center for futher assistance.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get on.

Regards,
Shashi Kumar

I would like to do a clean install of Win 7 on it and am wondering if I have any options. The sticker itself is attached, but the key is unreadable. It is a Toshiba about 4 years old. The seller may or may not have the recovery discs and paperwork/box that came with it and will get back to me in a few days. My guess is that the key is only printed on the laptop itself. Is there anything I can do in this situation? Would it be best to inquire through Microsoft or Toshiba?

Thanks

...by the way this is a wonderful forum

A:Bought used laptop - Win 7 key has rubbed off of sticker - options?

Toshiba used to ship those discs for free - then they started charging 30 US dollars.

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Technically the breaking of the seal does void the warranty, but the final determination is with the service center.   If you are looking to get the charger port repaired than I would suggest you check with your local Best Buy to see if there are an authorized Lenovo Service Center.  If they are then bring the laptop in an explain how the seal got broken to one of their service techs.

As the title mentions, i bought 3 windows 7 home premium stickers from a shop near my house. I got them (3) for $184 (US), while 3 stickers in a box cost $272 (US), and now i have a feeling they are all pirated copies that don't work properly. I haven't tried them yet as all my computers and laptops are already running windows 7 home prem / professional. I never bought from this shop before. Is there a way to get real copies or am i screwed and i spent a lot of money on nothing.

A:Bought windows 7 sticker without box, has a no return policy.

Hello Michael, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since those product keys are not currently activated on a PC, you might see if this below may help to tell if they may be genuine or not. How to know you're buying genuine Windows - Microsoft Windows
