Suggested upgrade options

Q: Suggested upgrade options

My four(?) year old system's getting a bit slow, and I'm wondering what my next upgrade should be, so any suggestions on this would be most welcome.

My "Behemoth" is:
333 Celeron @ 416MHz (tho' I might be able to get it to 500 with a good heatsink/fan combo(?!))
BX motherboard
Sound Blaster Live Value soundcard (bought as OEM)
Intel i740 AGP Graphics card
32x CD-ROM
4.75 GB HD (speed unknown) <b><- Edit: added</b>

My OS is Win'98 SE, and the main apps/progs I run are games and mid-level graphics programs like Photoshop 5.0 and GIMP.

A: Suggested upgrade options

Your system does not sound like it would work well for games and graphic software. I wouldn't recommend a Celeron processor for that type of work.

I would recommend a high-end Pentium III or a low end Pentium 4. Don't buy the high-end Pentium 4's since they are overpriced and the benefits do not warrant the high cost.

For gaming, you should get a really good graphics card. Some other people here could probably recommend some good ones. Unless you're playing the latest and greatest games, don't spend the money on the best high-end graphics card. Purchase a step down. You'll save a great deal of money without sacrificing quality.

Your CD-ROM is fine. You only need a DVD drive if you plan to watch movies on your computer or a specific game only comes on a DVD.

Your RAM should work in a new system as long as the motherboard supports SDRAM. All but the newest and most high-end systems do. I would bump it up to at least 256 for games and graphics.

If you're not comfortable building your own system, look for local computer companies that assemble computers from various parts. That way you'd be able to use your components (memory, CD-ROM, memory, maybe hard drive, sound card, case).

Back in April I was discussing a CPU upgrade alongside my new video card, but now CPU that was suggested has been discontinued on Newegg

What alternative that is compatible with my motherboard is for suggestion? I don't want to spend more than $120-130 and is a decent gaming CPU to upgrade from my aging Athlon 64 AM2 DC 3600+ 1.91 Ghz? I was looking at this, not sure if fully compatible with my motherboard.

Also, how would an AM2 socket support an AM3 Phenom?

A:CPU upgrade for my M3A78-EM, original suggested CPU discontinued

You need to go to the Asus website and find your cpu upgrade list. Just type in your motherboard and all the specs and upgrades should come up.
Have you looked at Tigerdirect ?

Here is my spec
P4 2.26
256 PC800 RD RAM
GeForce 4 Ti200 64MB
Dual 80GB 7200 HD
SB Live Vale Sound Card
Logitech Cordless Desktop
17" Monitor
WinXp PRo SP1
DT2200 5.1 Speakers.

What I want is some general advice.
My system gets 12000 ish on 3dmark2000 is that good?
Im gonna need to get a sound card that supports my 5.1 speakers cause at the moment only 2 work!! I audigy the best option! What is the best card? Im may be looking for an external box with loads of inputs cause I eventually want to plug my guitar into it and use it as a recording studio.

I recently tried to upgrade my ram by putting 2 more 128 sticks in but they were uncompatible! doh, so im gonna try putting 2 64 in, so that will substantially increase my memory so I dont think that needs upgrading.

I use the Pc for games like UT2003, Q3, Tiger Woods 2003, and fifa2003, they look great at 1024*768 at 16 colors but do lag at 32bit at a higher res. So I am eventually gonna upgrade my video card to the new Fx series or a faster GF4 if they go a lot cheaper due to fx, and advice?

And any general advice on speeding up the PC atall??
Cheers guys

A:Upgrade Options

Overclock your Ti4200. You should be able to get Ti4600 speeds without problems. That should boost your 3dmark score a bit. Other than that your PC should pretty much run anything out there. If you are looking to upgrade your video card in the near future then don't get an older Directx8 compatible card. Get FX or Radeon 9700 Pro or one of the lower Radeons like the 9500. Other than that a faster processor would improve matters but for the moment you shouldn't really need it.

What I was hoping to do was to Upgrade my machine, make it faster and better use with graphics packages - with hopefully not fortunes of money.
How would I go about a good UPGRADE.

Look forward to hearing sudjestions

A:Upgrade Options

What graphics are you going to be doing? upgrading your PC won't be a cheap excercise.

You going to have to replace most of your hardware, If you want a faster chip, you need a newer mobo, which would need minimum of a 300W PSU and the board won't support SD RAM which I'm sure you have ATM you would need to get DDR Ram.

I am a gaming guy with not a lot of money to spend. Here is what I already have

1. Motherboard - ASUS P4P800
2. Graphic interface - AGP 8x ATi Radeon 9000 series 128 MB
3. Memory - 1024 MB
4. CPU - Intel P4 2.0
5. CPU Speed - 2.0 GHz
6. Power Supply Make/Model - No idea
7. Watt output/Amperage 300 Watts (I guess)

Here are a few screenshots from CPUz

I am currently playing Medieval 2 Total War. I want to play Oblivion. I love RTS and maybe RPGs. I can spend maybe $350 ~ $400.

Any suggestions?

A:Upgrade options

Your best bet: get yourself a new graphics card. Getting an X1950Pro AGP version might seem like a good idea, but your CPU would hold everything back if you did so.

Might be a good idea to bump the mem to 2 gigs, but the performance increase would be quite minimal I think.

I'd say the Geforce 6600gt AGP might be the slowest you'd want. The X800 might be ideal. Something more powerful than that wouldn't show much of an improvement IMO. With the X800 you might be able to play Oblivion, but don't expect awesome graphics.

You might also want to overclock your CPU, but its a risk. If you blow something up you'd need to get a new comp.

My grandfather is still using Xp on his Dell Latitude d620. Now, me being the tech savvy person of the house, i told him it was time to upgrade, but, i'm not sure if i want to install vista (shudder) or go with 7 or maybe even 8 (i'd like him to have 8 only because of the fact that his PC setting would be synced with his email, making it easier to re-install). So my question is, would 7 or 8 even work on his pc?

Why not dual-boot XP with 7 instead? That way, he can choose either XP or 7 to boot.

I want to upgrade my graphics card and power supply, but am unsure of what products to buy. After some searching online, I found two decent PSUs in my price range (<$100):
SeaSonic M12II 620 Bronze 620W

Rosewill HIVE Series HIVE-750 750W

And two very similar graphics cards, but with different prices and dimensions, also in my price range (<$200):
EVGA SSC 02G-P4-3653-KR GeForce GTX 650 Ti

EVGA 02G-P4-3658-KR GeForce GTX 650 Ti BOOST

I am uncertain as to which models to buy, and concerned about the dimensions of the units, since I have a stock case that is fairly small (my current PSU has a depth of 5.5in, compared to 6.3 of the other ones, and there is not much room for a large GPU). If anyone could provide some insight on whether the items I've selected will fit in my case, or if they're of any reasonable quality, I would greatly appreciate the advice. Alternatively, I am also open to suggestions for other options.

*If possible, please make any suggestions on the Rosewill PSU ASAP, since the promotional offer for the product ends on Nov.12th.

A:PSU and GPU Upgrade Options

I have built two boxes using Rosewill psu's, they have been fine. Newegg has a 30 return as long as you have all the original packaging. As far as the gpu's I would go with the Ti Boost model.

I have got an Intel Pentium(R) III Coppermine (700mhz). I want to improve performance on my PC which is a Packard Bell iConnect 1200 and I have already upgraded my hard drive to a Maxtor 80GB and upgraded my RAM to 128MB and my OS to XP. I plan to upgrade the RAM to 256MB and later 512MB but I'm not sure about my processor.

Do I need to get a new motherboard if I wanted to get a new processor with more power e.g. more than 1ghz?

Could I replace it with a P4 or would I need a new MB?

Is it possible to take my old one out and put a new one in just like my RAM and HDD?

A:Upgrade Options

If it is a Packard Hell then the motherboard and most of the components will be proprietary. This means that standard ATX power supplys, and motherboards will not fit into the case. You will have to upgrade since a PIV will not fit in that motherboard. If you are planning on going that far just get new everything. You can still use the hard drives and video card (if it is in a slot and not integrated) in the new PC.

hello guys!
i was wondering if someone might be able to help me out here...i've got a copy of office professional xp (full version) and was wondering what my upgrade options might be? or if there's a certain website that may be able to help?

thanks guys!

A:upgrade options...

If you are looking to upgrade from Office Pro XP, your current upgrade options are Office Pro 2003 and Office Pro 2007. You're looking at about $400 if you find a good deal on it. I would recommend taking a look at the features of 2007. It would have a much greater learning curve compared to 2003, as it has been completely redesigned. The new features and new layout do a number on increasing productivity once you learn where all the features are located. I wouldn't recommend making the upgrade from XP to 2003, as there is not a whole lot of difference between them (it would be hard to justify the $400+).

Hi, i am looking into upgrading my self built desktop and i was wondering what you lot thought would be best for it.
My work load is mainly 3D modeling, rendering and texturing so CPU speed and RAM are paramount to the software i use :-

3DsMAX 2012
Cinema 4D
Poser Pro 2012

All high end 3D application programs demanding a high end PC to which i built at the time with the budget i had.
I am in a position to better the set up now so some advice on what i could add or change to the MB would be most appreciated.
Here are the stats of the pc at the moment.

Gigabyte GA-X58 USB3 MB
12gig OCZ Tripple channel gold RAM
Intel Core i7 950 LGA1366 (Standard CPU Fan)
XFX Radeon 6870 (Dont need to change this as programs arent reliant on GPU)
CoolMaster Silent Pro 500w (May replace this if needed)
3x1TB Samsung F3 HDD
W7 64bit

I dont want to get into a rebuild so replacing things to suite the MB is what i am looking at doing, any other info as requested.

I attached a cpuz just incase.

Thanks for any info offered,

A:Upgrade options?

You've only really a couple of options, both of which are to change the CPU for something more powerful, or overclock your existing unit.

Might be worth seeing what sort of money you could get a hex-core i7 980x for now the newer LGA 2011 is out, but ultimately your best bet will probably just be to get a bloody good aftermarket cooler and overclock your CPU.

As for coolers, dependant on your case, the Corsair H70/H100 radiator coolers, a Noctua NH-D14 or something like a Thermaltake Silver arrow.

Another option would be some faster RAM. DDR3-1600 would be recommended, maybe go for 24GB if you're finding you're using all of it up at the moment.

I really just want to know what the motherboard is designed to take as I cannot find the information anywhere as it is quite old/crap!But it may be worth dropping an 800Mhz etc in?

A:Processor Upgrade Options

G'day allstar 07, I don't know for sure but the 100 bus speed is your limiting factor as far as I know. This kind of makes a P3-600 about as far as your envelope reaches.
I would suggest it as not being a worthy adventure, maybe increasing RAM might help but your end product and expense becomes dubious.
Compaq stuff is not really helpful with technical help in upgrading.
If you only wanted the machine for general internet and email kinds of use there is a Linux operating system called Puppy Linux or Puppy Chubby that would cover your needs and give surprising performance with a complete suite of all programs but nothing really compatibile with microsoft stuff, it is free and really works well. There are some other limitations.
Sorry no help with the processor info. Memory and processors have moved on since that era and even memory for those machines is more expensive than the newer stuff.
Cheers, qldit

I have a Dell XPS 13 that won't boot.  The keyboard lights, but nothing ever comes on the screen.  I saw this post here, and found the following:
1.  LCD BIST (hold the letter <D>) - that worked fine.
2.  I also tried the PSA (holding <Fn>) and tried to run diagnostics by tapping <F12> - neither of these worked.  Nothing happens, no beeps, no screen change, nothing.
3.  I've tried hooking an external monitor up via the mini display port (I use this often to watch video on an HDTV), nothing ever shows on the TV.
At this point assuming my motherboard needs replaced.
I have the XPS-13-9001sLV, model L321X with 4 gigs ram, and the 1.7 ghz I7 processor, 256 GB SSD, Service Tag can be provided via PM to a dell representative if needed.
Every search for a L321X mb returns the basic same results... 4gb ram max, etc.  (I'm assuming that by definition my model is the one with 4gb ram and that's why I only see those options).
Here is my question ... I realize the RAM can't be upgraded on this mb, but can I order a compatible motherboard with more RAM and possibly a more powerful CPU that will work with my hardware configuration?  I see a lot of L322X motherboards that can give me what I need, but are they compatible with my L321X model?
Is there a place I can look to see what other motherboards are compatible with my XPS model?

A:XPS 13 motherboard upgrade options?

It doesn't look like any of these shipped with more than 4G of RAM -- and the i7  you have now is the fastest CPU they shipped with.  The L322x mainboard will not fit the L321x despite external similarities in design.
The  only option is a drop-in replacement.  That said, also beware these models, as the mainboard is different depending on the screen type (touch vs. non-touch) and the resolution (FHD vs. HD) -- if you buy the wrong board, you'll then need to replace both the display and display cable.
With boards going for $250-350 (L321x) and up to $400 for the L322x -- and with complete used L321x systems going for $200-300 on EBay (with L322x systems starting about $50 higher), you may be better off buying a complete used system.  Or, since it's going to be a significant percentage of what  a new system will cost -- replacing the system with a new unit.  At least you'll have a new warranty (vs. nothing to 90days at best on parts or a used system).

How do you determine what processors are supported by the A07 BIOS on a DELL OC2JKT motherboard? I'm contemplating putting in an i7-880 processor in the LGA1156 socket in place of the i5-650 currently on board? The H57 chipset should be compatible with either processor.

Hey folks!
Thank you for your time on this -

When Windows 7 was released, I upgraded through student pricing, and got Home Premium.

I bought a mac and I need to install Windows 7 on it - I'm just wondering how I can find out if I have a 1 user license? I read somewhere that sometimes it's a 3 user license, but I don't think so since I bought a student license.

I'd also like to know if I upgrade to Professional, if I can have multiple user licenses for that as well?

A:Upgrade options - Mac Install

I'm pretty sure that the student pricing is only one license. The only way you get a 3-user license is through a special family pack option, which wouldn't be available with student pricing.

If you upgrade to Professional, you will still have a 1-user license. Even if you had the family pack option, I don't believe one Pro upgrade license could upgrade the entire pack.

I've got the following PC:

OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 3, 32 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz, x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9
Processor Count: 2
RAM: 3326 Mb
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 6200, 512 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 76285 MB, Free - 9300 MB;
Motherboard: Dell Computer Corp., 0F4491
It does a job, to be fair. I use it for basic stuff such as MS Office, the internet, music notation software etc.

I've just started getting into gaming again though, and my system sometimes struggles on the higher graphics settings.

Is there anything worthwhile doing to my PC to upgrade, or is it simply a case of it's too old to do anything with, and I'd be better saving up for a new system?

If the latter is true, would I be likely to gain any financial bonus from selling my current setup - either as a whole or separately?

Many thanks.

The x1 carbon gen 1 uses an SSD that is not the "normal" mSATA drive and is not M.2.  I have used an adapter like the one in your link (different brand) to allow the use of a different drive and it works fine.  The problem is that yours supports M.2 drives that are format 2242 (42mm long) but not the more common 2280 format cards.  I could find no adapters to work with 2280 drives, and it looks to me like there wouldn't be enough room anyway.  The only 512GB M.2 card I have seen in 2242 format is this one:

So I'm planning on buying some more memory. I was thinking 3 A-Tech (Cheap) 2GB DDR2-800s. But I have some choices on how I want to upgrade it. Here's my current specs:

DIMM1: Kingston 2GB DDR2-533 (5-4-4-12)
DIMM2: Samsung 1GB DDR2-800 (6-6-6-18)
DIMM3: Hynix 1GB DDR2-667 (5-5-5-15)
DIMM4: Hynix 1GB DDR2-667 (5-5-5-15)

As you can see, lots of mismatching. I was thinking I'd swap out both Hynix chips (Stock memory) and my only 2GB, for a total net upgrade of 2GBs, that way all my memory will run at 800 instead of 533, but unfortunately I'd still have that one running at CL6. Or swap out all the 1GBs for 2GBs for a total net increase of 3GBs but still running at 533 due to that Kingston chip?

What do you guys think the best route is? Thanks!

Hi, My wife is looking at new laptops ? mainly Dell Inspiron 1720 or 1721. A few questions about the processors, graphics cards and sound cards options. If the upgrade prices for the processors are worth it, and if the upgrade choices in video / sound cards are worth having, or be better to just wait for sales at retail stores on video / sound cards.

I?d like to use her laptop for converting music from old vinyl / reel to reel. Would like to convert, edit & clean up a fair # of VHS tapes. Also concerned about the ?standard? processor / video / sound card becoming obsolete too quickly.

The std AMD processor is Turion 64 x 2 TL 56 (1MB cache / 1.8GHz). It can be upgraded to the TL 60 (1MB / 2GHz) - $75 more; or TL 64 (1MB / 2.2 GHz) - $150 more, but regardless the only video card option w/ any AMD processor seems to be Integrated ATI Radeon Xpress1270 (64MB dedicated local frame buffer).

The std Intel processor is Core 2 Duo T5450 (1.66GHz, 2MB L2 cache, 667 FSB).
Upgrades are T7100 (1.8GHz, 2MB, 800 FSB) for $50 more; T7300 (2GHz, 4MB, 800 FSB) - $125 more; T7500 - $225 more; and the T7700.

With Intel processors, std video is Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accel. X3100.
Available upgrades are NVIDIA GeForce Go 8400M GS w/ 128 MB dedicated ? for $100 more, or NVIDIA GeForce Go 8600M GT w/ 256 MB dedicated ? for $200 more.

I replaced the T2400 with the T7600 fired it up the computer and . . . . . nothing, zippo.
Very disappointing.

The good news however is that when I put the T2400 back everything worked ok!!.

So, are they really not compatible?
Is there something else I ought to have done?

Suggestions gratefully received

Hi,I recently purchased a HP 15-AF112NA with 8GB of RAM.  Im running a VM, and would like to increase the RAM to 16MB to speed things up a bit. Are there 2 RAM slots in the HP 15-AF112NA to allow me to install 2 X 8GB? I had a look online and dont see any RAM options for the HP 15-AF112NA model.  Any help is greatly appreciated.  thanks

A:RAM Upgrade Options - HP 15-AF112NA

This from the Service Manual: Two non-customer-accessible/upgradable memory module slots DDR3L-1600 single channel support (DDR3L-1600 downgrade to DDR3L-1333) DDR3L-1600 single channel support Supports up to 8 GB of system RAM in the following con?gurations ? 8192-MB total system memory (8192×1) or (4096×2) Your Service Manual The model number on the cover of the manual seems different but it is your manual.  How to begins on p. 37. You must remove the whole back cover, and it is technically only supposed to be done by an authorized tech. There are 2 slots and each slot can have an 8 gig module in it so it can take 16 gigs; HP just did not sell it this way.  8-GB (PC3L, 12800, 1600-MHz) 693374-005 Post back with any more questions or if you need more help.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

I'm trying to find a suitable upgrade for the video card that will run on this system.  I want to upgrade to a 2Gig memory card.  I realize I may also need to upgrade the power supply.  One that I have been looking at is the Radeon R7 240 GDDR3-2GB.  I'd go up to the a better card but am afraid anything stronger won't be compatible. I'm looking for a card that will run games well with medium to high graphic settings.I'm moderately comfortable with swapping hardware components in a PC as I have done it before.  I'm just not very knowledgable when it comes to compatibility concerns.  Any help or advice would be hugely appreciated

Hello Everyone, I have toshiba x500 laptop and it has 4gb 1066 mhz ddr3 ram. I would like to upgrade the ram to 8 gb. I am having tough getting similar configuration Ram in the market. Can I upgrade to higher speed ram to 1600mhz? Will it affect the laptop or incompatible? Please share your suggestions.

A:Qosmio X500 - RAM upgrade options

Can I upgrade to higher speed ram to 1600mhz?

If you would use two RAM modules with different speed, then the faster RAM i.e: 1600Mhz will be clocked down to the speed supported by 2nd RAM i.e 1066Mhz.
Therefore I would recommend you to use two identical memory modules

I've not been around much lately so apologies if I missed a discussion on this elsewhere.

I noticed this small sentence in the Windows Blog post announcing Windows 8.1 Update 1

If you are still on Windows 8, you can get the Windows 8.1 Update via the Windows Store on April 8th as well.

Windows blog link

I'm guessing this means the following?
The option in the Windows 8 Store to upgrade to 8.1 will be replaced by an option to upgrade to 8.1 update 1.The option in the Windows 8 Store to upgrade to Windows 8.1 (with no update) will disappear
Does that sound right/ likely?

I guess it also means that if you really want to update 8.0 to 8.1 without the update, and only have access to the Store upgrade to do it, you may be best advised to do it now?!

A:Windows 8.0 upgrade options to 8.1 after April 8th

That sounds about right. Microsoft have updates all their Windows 8.1 ISO images to now include update 1. It would make sense that the Store 8.1 Update would now include update 1

I've heard that if you don't apply update 1 to 8.1 you won't get any more security updates for 8.1. One of the updates in the update 1 package is a security update. That security update is a prerequisite for any further security updates.

If not, what other mobo/cpu combo would you recommend? (for graphic design and gaming), might be doing some OC..., I read some forums and looks like it is a good mobo for OCing...Let me know your thoughts, ideas, suggestions...

P.S. As of right now, this is what I got so far...

+ 5 HDDs that are EIDEs...and AGP video card, that's gonna get upgraded to PCI-e

MSI makes EXCELLENT motherboards. That combination is a great one. I would consider going with an E6600 CPU though.

Hi all, I have a 1st gen EliteBook 8730w from 2008. It is the best machine I have ever owned. It?s still going strong after 8 years. However, have started doing work that would greatly benefit from a CUDA enabled GPU. Neither the FX2700M nor the FX3700M which came with the original 8730w?s, are CUDA enabled. So before I finally throw in the towel and spend a whole bunch of money on a new machine, I?m keen to know if there are any CUDA enabled GPU?s, that would work in an 8730w. Maybe I can squeeze a few more years out of the 8730w.While the Quadro FX2700M and FX3700M are not CUDA enabled, I?ve noticed there are a whole bunch of more recent NVIDIA Quadro mobile GPU?s that are CUDA enabled. For the sake of reference, the list of CUDA enabled Quadro mobile GPU?s may be found here. My Questions: Are the Quadro FX2700M and Quadro FX3700M, the only GPU?s that can be installed in an 8730w ?Which, if any, of the more recent CUDA enabled Quadro mobile GPU?s, ?can? be successfully installed in an 8730w ?Are there perhaps any other CUDA enabled GPU?s, aside from the Quadro range, that might work in an 8730w ?For the sake of reference, my 8730w?s current spec is as follows. CPU:     Intel Core Duo, P8600.RAM:     8.00 GBGPU:     NVIDIA Quadro FX 2700MDisplay: 17? 1920x1200OS:      64-bit Windows 10.Regards,R

hoping somebody can assit here.  I have an old Inspiron 530 mini tower desktop.  Not sure of the uP or MB model.
Got it new in 2007 and it has been generally a reliable PC, had one raid drive fail which I replaced and recently video card has failed so running off embedded VGA port.  Power supply has just failed and replacing that with one from ebay.
Now I know 99% are thinking buy a new one!  Finances don't allow that but I could probably afford some upgrades if cheap enough.
Replacement Video card is easy however I'd like a bit more grunt to deal with the new OS WIN10 & associated programs out now so looking at potentially a MB upgrade.
Can anyone advise suitable upgrade option for a Dell MB that that would fit the mini tower and power 300 W supply?

thanks in advance.

A:Dell Inspiron 530 upgrade options

I suggest an SSD boot drive and a Sapphire 6450 video card rather than a new motherboard. The IO shield of the 530 is non-removable, so you'd have to modify the chassis to fit a different motherboard. And, Socket 775 is long obsolete, so there are no modern choices available (with features like SATA 3 and USB 3).

A:EMachines EL1210-09 GPU upgrade options

On an SFF system with a 220w PSU your video card options are going to be rather limited.

Here are some recommendations:
ECS NGT430C-1GQR-F GeForce GT 430 = $57 ($37 after rebate)
ASUS ENGT430/DI/1GD3(LP) GeForce GT 430 = $60

A Geforce 430 is about the max you can go with that PSU. Make sure that any card you get has a fan since that SFF case gets pretty hot and doesn't have great airflow so a fan less card will likely bake in there.

I am looking to purchase a Latitude E6540 laptop. Intel lists the 4th Gen Mobile CPU's as being able support up to 32GB of RAM, will the E6540 support this much RAM? Dell does not offer it as a option but am wondering if 3rd party memory will allow this configuration.

A:Latitude E6540 Ram upgrade options

Hello MattRelouw,
Maximum Memory supported by Dell Latitude E6540 is 16GB and was never tested with 32GB. However, as 4th Gen Mobile CPU's supports up to 32GB memory, the system might support 32GB memory. Any branded memory should do.

I was hoping someone could help with possible upgrade options to my aging machine (of tell me if it's even worth it). I have had my eMachines T6000 for a few years now. I have doubled my memory and put in an ATI 9800 Pro, but other than that, no further upgrades. I am probably a year or so out from building a more current rig or buying something better so I think it might make some sense to get a more current agp video card and power supply. Is this a waste of time or would I see some performance gains? Better to just wait and get something new in a year or so? Any help is greatly appreciated!

I am looking at the Gecube x1950 ( which appears to be a significant upgrade, but it starts to get confusing w/ the power supply requirements.....or am I wasting my time and should be just waiting and buying something more current?

A:Upgrade options ..eMachines T6000

Can you include some details on the PSU?

I went through much the same situation with this old HP I used to have. I popped in a Geforce 5200 in 2004, it worked fine for a while, and began to lag behind. I seriously considered upgrading it, but I figured I could get the cash to build a new rig.

As for my amateur advice, I would say build early. Wait until DX10 crests on the market, and some good, mid-level cards with support come out (don't splurge for the 8800, in a few years they won't even be average-performance cards). So that'd be about 5 months.

If you can't stand it until then, I would recommend just a moderate upgrade. Nvidia is selling off some old AGP cards- 6800's and whatnot, which would get you decent performance to tide you over until you build a new system.

Also, nothing you buy is going to be even moderately effective if you keep that RAM the way it is. 512 MB is not too much of an upgrade, and with the oh-so-common PC3200 standard waning it's especially cheap right now. You can get 512 MB budget memory for anywhere from 30-70 dollars, depending on whether you do it online or not.

Hope this helped.

I have downloaded the upgrade version of Windows 8 (64) - Saved as an ISO image and created a bootable DVD!

Will I be able to boot from this DVD, rather than perform an install from within Windows 7:-

Can I then perform a clean (Select Customize) installation on a deleted SSD (Disk 1); namely, my second SSD; rather than my first SSD, Disk 0, with the Windows 7 operating system on!

My aim is to get Windows 8 up and running, before I delete Windows 7 (I will transfer Windows 8 to Disk 0, at this time)

Does the installation of Windows 8 upgrade, need to see my existing Windows 7, installation on the disk it is installing on!

If I proceed in this manner, will the Windows 8 installation procedure, recognise my Belkin Wireless Adapter, type F5D8055!

Or will I need to install a driver - And if so, how!

Presumably, I need to go on line to update and verify registration!

I would appreciate advice on these matters.

A:Windows 8 (64) Upgrade - What are the Installation Options!

You can do a clean install, but you need to delete the Windows 7 install.

What i am trying to do:
Update installation media and recovery options to reflect that of the current installed OS version.(8.1)

What i have done:

Updated to 8.1 from Store after running/using 8 which was originaly a clean install.
Had been using 8 installation media to access winRE but after recent issues with recovery options asking for installation media spent time to try and better understand all the recovery options as available in 8.1. Using the tutorial section of these forums suggest i have broken recovery as many options do not appear (including Automatic Repair) in Advanced Start Up Options.

After creating 8.1 DVD ISO then making this UEFI bootable reaslised Recovery options available are not what they should be.
The ISO was created as per Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 ISO - Download or Create which did not boot using EFI so used oscdimg to make it so as per Anybody gotten the DVD to boot UEFI? - Microsoft Community

This means i do have fallback recovery/reinstall options; thankfully.

After realising i can not make up a USB Start Up disk (Recovery Drive - Create with USB Flash Drive in Windows 8) and am aware the WinRE partition on drive is empty; I need to place WinRE and system recovery image to that partition before it can be used or copied to any where else! - How?

Months ago i came across a webpage describing how 8.1 upgrade moved ESP to start of drive. Simply moving WinRE partition to start of drive fixed the Recovery options issues users were observi... Read more

Hi: Looking at the list of supported wlan cards in the service manual for your notebook, none seem very promising. If I had to take a chance on one, I would go for this one... Broadcom 4313GN 802.11b/g/n 1×1 WiFi and 20702 Bluetooth 4.0 Combo Adapter   HP Part # 657325-001 Changing wireless cards in HP notebooks made before 2014 is nothing short of a nightmare. There is a BIOS whitelist, which prevents any wireless card not listed in the service manual for the PC from working. The PC won't even boot up until the unsupported wlan card is removed. The next problem is some of the part numbers listed in the service manual are incorrect. For example, the Intel 6230 listed has the wrong part #, and no one knows what the right one is (or if the 6230 is even supported). What I would do if I were you, would be to find a used but tested and working wlan card on eBay. Query by the part number and check the picture in the listing to be sure you see the part number listed on the white sticker that is labeled 'Replace with HP Spare.' I'm seeing the Broadcom card I referenced going for as low as $4.35 + shipping from Hong Kong. They are slightly more expensive if you want one that is located in the USA.

I currently own a Dell Dimension 2400, I have updgraded the ram to 1.5 GB, I'm running a Intel Celeron 2.4G Hz. Currently using on board graphics.
However I'm still not experiencing the performance I need.

I would like to upgrade this PC so I am able to play certain games such as BioShock or Sims 3 and Black And White 2.

I know this a lot to ask of my little machine as it is so old it doesnt even have a AGP slot!

If needed I'm willing to upgrade the motherboard. But I'd prefer not to. The form factor is Micro ATX I believe.

I want to spend under £200.

Ideally I would like the best PCI graphics card and the highest CPU supported.
But only if this will allow me to play high spec games. Otherwise I guess I have to upgrade the mobo.

Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope.

Ok, here's the deal. I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop. It has a 1.6GHz AMD Turion processor. It also has an ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 Graphics card. I'm not sure how much memory it has and I don't know how to find out, but I think it's either 128MB or 256MB. Probably the former.

I wish to run a game that requires a 2.4GHz processor and a 256MB graphics card.

I know very little about what processors/graphics cards are compatible with my computer or how much they cost.

What are my options?

Hi all,

I have 2 hard drives in a Raid 0 configuration. On this configuration, I have 2 partitions, C and D. C currently has Vista on it.

booted from win 7 64bit disk. Select Custom. Select advanced options and highlight the C partition. All of the advanced options are greyed out (format, delete, etc).

If I select the D partition, all the advance options are available, but obviously I don't want to install to the D drive.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to why the options are greyed out on my C partition? could it have to do with the Raid 0? It came from Dell like this.

A:Custom Upgrade - Advanced options greyed out

Hello foghat,

Try following the instructions in this post for how to mark a partition as active.

Now, what is on the C partition?

Hi Everyone,

I have a Dell Dimension e521 with the following:

AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ 2.00GHz
2.00 GB DRAM
Windows 7 home premium 64-bit
NVidia GeForce 7300 LE

it is a secondary computer in our house, used by the kids. Its starting to show its age a bit, though, and I'd like to see what I can do to allow it to run older games without spending more than $200 and without upgrading the power supply (if I can avoid it).

Looks like I missed my window of opportunity a bit on the CPU and video card, though. In both cases, the recommended upgrade choices for this model no longer seem to be available, though I can get a valid CPU upgrade option from for about $80 (looks to be retail, including fan). But, I'm not sure on the video card, and not sure about the memory. So, any advice would be welcome.

A:Dell Dimension e521 upgrade options?

If it's over 5 years old I would forget trying to upgrade it.
Standards and component fitting-types have changed since then, so much of what you would need to fit the existing motherboard is no longer being manufactured or stocked, warehouses have been cleared to make room for the new generation of upgrade components which won't fit a 5-year old motherboard.

Having a new motherboard fitted into to the existing case, then having new components fitted to that, whilst physically possible does not economic sense. The cost would be something approaching that of a new PC unless you bought the necessary parts and did all the work yourself. The bottom line is that a new PC would make much more sense.

Hi all.  I've been cleaning and updating my granddaughter's desktop PC.  This model uses an Asus P5BW-LA rev 1.05 MB (HP/Compaq name: Buckeye-GL8E), an Intel E6300 CPU with 4x1GB of PC2-6400 RAM and is running a 64-bit Windows 10 Pro installation. I thought I would upgrade the CPU while I was at it and bought a used E6700 which is part of the same Intel product line with all the same specs, except for the clock speed being faster.  The rated FSB on both chips is 1066 and HP's documentations says it should work: However -- there's always a however isn't there -- the E6700 won't boot into BIOS.  No beep codes or any other indication, just never brings up the boot screen.  I've reset CMOS, tried faster RAM and tried slower RAM but none of those things make any difference.  I checked to see if there was a later/updated BIOS but it appears there was only ever one produced, v3.17, and that's what is currently installed. Does anyone know if there is some technical limitation -- like CPU model being hard coded in BIOS or some such thing -- that keeps this from working or have I likely purchased a bad cpu chip? Thanks in advance for your help. HowardResmond, WA

I recently received a HP Probook 650 G2.I 'wanted' the Probook for it one of the last laptops built with a 'real' onboard RS-232 serial port.I also desired a quad core processor and would have never dreamed a modern high-end processor would only be dual core. BUT..I was surprised that the Core i7 6600U processor in my new laptop is only has TWO CORES and 4megs of cache.Ughhh!!It was at that moment I remembered was ASSUME stands for... So, when I went out to HP's site to check and sure enough, all the i3, i5 and i7 processors are all dual core. The only exception was the i7 6820HQ that is a quad core processor, 8megs of cache and has the intergrated Intel HD Graphics 530.I have no idea how much better the  Intel HD Graphics 530 over the  Intel HD Graphics 520 that came with my unit. Can a person upgrade power sipping dual core i7 to a stronger, muscle flexing, power gulping, quad core, 8+megs of cache processor? Is the CPU socketed? Can my current motherboard accept a 68xxHQ processor? My guess with the stronger CPU that using more power that a different heatsink/fan would be required?Would my power adapter work? The simplest way would be buy a NEW laptop with the specs I want, but it rather late for that. This Probook 650 G2 was not cheap and if I were to go to the boss for more $,$$$ for another laptop...well, it would not be pleasant. Your comments, suggestions, opinions and flames are all welcome! B... A:Core i7 6600U processor is only TWO CORES - Upgrade options?

See p. 24 of the Service Manual here.  Manual See the long list of motherboards each of which includes a processor? You asked whether the processor is socketed? No it is not and that is the end of the upgrade quest, unless you swapped out the motherboard. I am guessing just the motherboard with the i7-6820HQ is going to be well over $1000. How about nearly $1500? Before you throw rocks at the "mere" dual core i7 in your laptop, consider that it performs nearly on par with a 4th gen high end quad core. Modern high end processors, particularly in laptops, need to also consider power usage. Of course a Quad Core Skylake will be even more of a beast. The Intel 530 video is a minor improvement over the 520 for execution units, clock speed and gflops as shown below: HD Graphics 520GT224?1050403.2HD Graphics 530GT224?1150441.6  The Iris graphics is where it starts to be noticeably better.  If you figure a way to talk the boss into something new consider the Zbook G3 series. It can be equipped with up to a Xeon Quad-Core but even those are soldered on. It seems to be the trend. I think power management has gotten so tricky that it is hard to prevent power loss through any kind of a socketed processor and everything has to be as slim as possible for... Read more

A:Suggested Hjt Log

Hello healing41 and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I see no signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean.

Fragmentation isn't really a malware issue. It is just a natural occurance that happens over time. XP has a built-in defragmenter and there are many 3rd party disk-defragmenters. It is good to defragment a drive occasionally but unless the disk is heavily fragmented and the free disk space is less than about 10% of the drive there will probably not be a noticible performance improvement. The 2 files that will have the biggest impact from fragmentation are the swap file and the Master File Table which can only be defragmented with 3rd party defragers. NTFS file systems handle file fragmentation better than the old FAT system found on older operating systems like Win98 so an acasional defrag with the built-in XP utility should be Ok.

Hello !! Welcome to SF !!

I guess the IE is messed up resulting this behaviour. The best thing to do would be to reset IE to default settings then try to turn off suggested sites might fix it.

Hi friends,
I am an exclusive FF user (except for MS sites ).
I found a very good extension for FF which I would like to share with you. Its called Flashblock 1.5.1. Go to Mozilla homepage>extensions and search with above name. You will find it.
It stops all the flash materials on an webpage and gives you an option to allow it to play it or not. As most of the flash materials are AD so it also increases your security.
My yahoo pages are loading lightning fast now. Try it & LoL.

Thanks src. Another one you might want to install for extra security is NoScript which blocks all javascript, and has an option to block flash as well. It puts an icon in the status bar which you can click to allow java/flash for a particular site if required.

Often when I log on to IE 9, suggested site icon appears on my favorites bar. I can remove the icon, but the suggested sites (3), keep coming back. How can I get rid of this icon once and for all.

A:IE 9 suggested sites

If you right click in the top bar you can uncheck the Favorites bar, but also via Tools - Internet options - Advanced - in the Browsing section, ensure that the box for Enable Suggested Sites is also unchecked - Apply - OK

And Welcome to the forum

I am looking for a tool that will rip cd's into MP3 format, and write/rip blu ray discs easily and quickly. Whats the best software out there for this? Also, I don't think that windows media player plays Blu-Ray discs, so I was hoping someone could show me a good program for playing those.

A:Suggested software...

For ripping, try WMP itself. It's pretty good at ripping music CDs and the like into MP3.

Not sure if I have put this in the right place but here goes
1. Browser Choice. In Europe we get this option. But when it is taken (I stayed with IE10) the Browser Choice App remains and I cant get rid of it. There seems to be no means to uninstall it. Tried various sites on the web nothing works.
2. In the useful tutorial on backup using W7 recovery in Control Panel there is an option to backup system image to an external drive. I have one @1Tb but it starts then says cant proceed drive full - when it clearly is not. Any ideas? Is it not possible to backup the system image to SkyDrive ?
3. I do not use the Start Screen (Metro) as such but do put into it useful stuff that I need at odd times eg Administrative Tools. There seems to be no way to resize or recolour the tiles apart from "large" or "small". This is a nuisance as it gets too big to fit the screen. I found a site on the web that says it does this but my Rapport tells me it is unsafe so I have not tried it.
4. Is there a way to sort a block on the start screen(Metro) alphabetically without dragging tiles around one at a time.
5. A tutorial on each of these would be grand. I have found tutorials truly useful generally.

My Altec Lansings are crapping out on me again. I need one with STRONG wiring & will last a long time to come. The quality isn't a huge issue since I'm just using the on-board audio. Nothing fancy like 5.1.

Help is much appreciated.

Oh and it needs a microphone D:

A:Suggested Headphones?

Personally, I think Bluetooth are great, because they don't have wires. I'm not sure if it has a microphone
