Hello,

I am hoping someone can provide some assistance in getting rid of this BSOD problem.

Here is what happened.

I was using two driver update programs: One called Driver Booster 2 by Iobit and the other called Slimdrivers.

I updated various drivers including Nvidia which I had previously uninstalled but it kept popping up so I just let it go. The next thing I know, after that is installed and there were no more drivers left to install, I ran Windows Update and it also wanted to installed Nvidia again. I didn't have much choice in the matter...before I knew it, it was installing and I had to restart my computer. When the computer turned on again, I used it for a little while then it started to overheat something terrible. The computer was so hot I thought it was going to start on fire. Almost as soon as it started overheating, I got the BSOD and within a second it restarted or shut down. I can't remember which. The fan was running at top speed but that still wasn't enough. I could have cooked an egg on the backside of this thing.

So the next day, I started the computer up again and I uninstalled Nvidia completely using Iobit's Uninstaller to remove all traces of it in my computer. But the other problem I have now is that it still runs dangerously hot within a few hours.

I've uploaded the zip file as per the instructions. There must be some kind of conflict going on.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

A:BSOD after installing NVidia updates and other driver updates

The zip you uploaded does not contain any crash dump.

Follow it: Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD
Go to Option Two, Point 2. Download the .reg file and merge it in registry by double clicking it.

Now wait for another BSOD. When it occurred, search the .dmp files manually in the default path: C:\Windows\Minidump or %SystemRoot%\Minidump. See if the crash dump is recorded or not (hopefully it will be recorded).Post it following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions.

Dont run any disc cleanup program before you upload another zip.

Hi there

We got the crashed on machine running on Windows 10 started on last Wednesday and it's been working well for almost 1 month. After troubleshooting and restoring, we came across it's something to do with the Intel Drivers Display update that might causing this.

Once we restored the machine, the Windows Updates has already listed the driver ready to install as well all KBs. My question how do I stop/clear this list from running?

To prevent this update automatically on the driver, I went to the System > Hardware tab > Device Installation Settings > No. However this only preventing it running in the future and I need to stop appearing from the list as stated previously.

I came across previously with Windows 7 which is relating on one of particular updates that causing stuck on Windows Updates ... I know there is away to stop this action and clear up this updates cataloq. But not sure on Windows 10.

I'm appreciated your feedback and comment.

Thanks

Use Windows Update to find driver updates

In Windows Update click Custom Install in the main column, and then click Select optional hardware updates in the left-hand column.

Windows Update examines all parts of your system to determine what needs updating and it may recommend more than just driver updates. It's a good idea to visit Windows Update regularly for driver updates and other non-critical updates.

I recently set up a new Dell 7710 Precision Workstation (Xeon E3-1535M v5 w/Intel HD Graphics P530; Nvidia Quadro M5000M; Windows 7 Pro). The Dell Precision Optimizer (DPPO) tells me there are no updates at all (no Critical, Recommended, or Optional). However, the Intel Driver Update Utility tells me I have an older chipset (14.6.1.1030) that should be replaced by a newer chipset (10.0.27). I don't know if the DPPO is taking into account particular aspects of this system that make the 14.6.1.1030 the “correct” (even if not the latest) chipset. Perhaps the DPPO should override the Intel utility. Any thoughts?

A:Driver Updates: DPPO vs. Intel Driver Update Utility

I uninstalled a driver on purpose to test the dell optimizer utility and it is telling me no updates available ! I rebooted the laptop. same thing. In device manager the device is showing as other device with a yellow exclamation mark  !!!! How do I trust the optimizer now eh ?

If so, why doesn?t DELL send me emails or update automatically?

I won?t mind buying a software, but which one?

Sorry, so many questions. Thanks in advance.

A:BUY? Driver Updates or Scanner Updates

Forget the driver update software, unless you are having issues you don't need to update any drivers and if you do you should get then directly from the manufacturers website and not via a 3rd party product.

Also please do not repost the same question in multiple sections of the site as that is against forum rules.

But it would be nice to get him the other windows updates.

Hi all,

I have just returned my PC to fairly good operating speed, after a period of what appears to have been utility software conflicts.

I don't know if I should now attempt to go for broke by updating drivers (as detected by one of the freebie downloads at the top of your site), or whether it's best to abide by the rule "If it ain't broke - don't fix it!".

Listed as being out of date are: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000; C-Media AC97 Audio Device; Soft V92 Data Fax Modem (is this redundant anyway as I am now on a cable modem?); SiS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter; InterVideo WinDVD 2.2.

The existing drivers are likely to be just over 3 years old.

If any likely benefits are only going to be marginal and the potential for scrambling my PC's brain a distinct liklihood, I would like to be advised to leave well alone.

Not having updated any drivers previously, I don't know what if anything I'm missing.

I am also unaware as to whether it's as simple as downloading and saving to my desktop and running, with the download doing all the tidying up after, or if I am just going to clutter my system up with redundant files and registry entries that no longer apply.

If there might be genuine benefits to be had, then fine - but if I'm really unlikely to notice the difference on such a basic piece of kit as my own (AMD Athlon XP, 1500 MHz (4.5 x 333) 1700+; ASRock K7S41GX (2 PCI, 1 AGP, 1 AMR, 2 DIMM, Audio, Video, LAN); IE7; Wind... Read more

A:Driver Updates

Doesnt really matter that much. Provided everything is working, theres no real issue ( I remeber Crysis coming out, with really really bad issues- Nvidia issued new ones to cure it), so dont worry about it. Most of the time with a new driver, the fixes are minor, and you may find a quoted increase in speed, usually 5% on a good day. So generally, if theres a problem, lok fo rnew drivers, if theres not, update if you feel like it

Anyone got an idea how often Microsoft incorporates hardware driver updates in the Windows Update, or how that works in general? I noticed that for my graphics adapter (see specs) there have 2 driver updates been released by the manufacturer since the one that Windows Update provided.

A:Driver updates?!

Microsoft doesn't incorporate hardware updates but places them in the "Optional" catagory. If you check for updates manually in the Control Panel or when going to the update site itself directly and selecting the custom option there.

The MS update site will always be behind the manufacturer's own support site until newer versions are uploaded there. Likewise 3rd party sites that carry MS updates will always lag a little behind going directly to the MS download center.

One thing to do first however before jumping on updates just because they are newer is to check to see if anyone is reporting any problems with the latest before simply rushing to download and install. Occasionally the latest may turn out to be a problem and why need to fix what isn't broken already?

I've been looking for a free driver manager to search my pc and install drivers that my computer needs.  I ran a Google search and can't seem to find any way of getting drivers except by purchasing a driver manager.  The two I checked out SEEM to be legitimate, but I'm still wary.  I thought Microsoft Updates takes care of updating all drivers, but evidently not.  I looked through your "downloads" tab and found only one (I forget the name), but the description said it removed all remnants of the old drivers; nothing about locating and installing new ones.  I'd sure appreciate advice for a free driver manager.  And would I also install the one tool mentioned above to get rid of old drivers before adding new ones??  I'd sure appreciate your help cause I know NUTHHH-ING about drivers. Thanks much.

A:Need driver updates for Win 7

The best hardware drivers update path is direct only from the manufacturing support site. While some OEM laptops like HP, Sony and Dell have bundled or available softwares to check for periodic updates in the background for drivers and BIOS as like for Windows is Windows update configured for default or recommended settings, there are no 3rd party softwares available online specifically tied to these computer manufacturers for driver updates other than the former mentioned.

Hi all:

So I just installed Windows 10 last night. It went fine and my system is working well. No worries there. I have been reading about updating drivers to Win10 compatibility. Is there a way to tell which driver need updating (beyond going into Device Manager and clicking 'update drivers' for each piece of hardware)? I'm mostly concerned about drivers for my video card and motherboard. Unfortunately AMD seems to have a hard time creating drivers that, you know, work, and I'm on a version of my GPU drivers that I know is stable. Any advice on installing Win10 drivers people have would help. Thanks.

A:Driver updates

You need to go to your mobo's website and see if there are 10 drivers listed and also if there is a BIOS update that maybe required or needed to fix some issues with 10. Do the samething for AMD GPU.

I have an AMD HD Radeon 6790 and the latest driver version is 15.7.1....and it's expressly for windows 10.

Hello Rickory,

If there isn't a driver for your hardware in Windows Vista, there's a good chance it's available online through Windows Update. That's why you should set Windows Vista to automatically download and install all recommended updates for your computer.Windows Update detects your specific hardware configuration and downloads only the drivers you need (along with recommended software updates). To learn how to get recommended updates automatically, see Turn automatic updating on or off.

Quite obviously there is a feature of Windows 7 that I misunderstood. I have my updates set to download and notify, including drivers etc. Well, I had a video driver dated in the 90's. About a week ago, I began having freezing problems, and was able to rectify the problem by updating the aforementioned driver. The new driver was dated March 2010.

Since I thought that any new drivers would be delivered via Windows Update, where did I go wrong? The new driver was dated 3/2010, would I have received the driver update if I had waited?

Incidentally, my computer is now working better than ever.

For the information of any reader the new driver is from The ATI -Catlyst Control Center. I think the driver is in very common use.

Also...

Optional updates can include updates, drivers, or new software from Microsoft to enhance your computing experience. You need to installed these manually.

TBH you should just go to the manufactures website and click on "downloads/updates" then input your card info as requested. It's extremely simple, and takes no time at all to do. This is for both sound and graphic cards.

IMHO, paying the $29.95 would be a waste of money, as you can get the info for free from the manufacturers website.

Alternately, you could probably google "newest drivers for Nvidia 7800 GTX" or whatever your card is (both sound and graphics).

What type of graphics card/sound card do you have (ie. radeon 9800 pro or sb! live 24-bit)?

How to Find Drivers
search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).

Hi,

I run PC Pitstop's Scan fairly regularly. I like that they give you instructions on how to care for problems manually, even though they sell programs that can do the adjustments for you.

However, I am a little bit frustrated as they said that I need new drivers for my video card and audio card. I did a search for the drivers they listed as updated, and one did not match the Windows logo verification process (and I was warned that this could have very bad results), and neither showed up on the manufacturers' sites. It seems that the only way I can get updated drivers is to pay for PC Pitstop's Driver update program.

Anyone have any input??

The old adage applies here, if it ain't broken don't fix it. PC Pitstop contains a registry clean which we don't endorse the use of here at BC. The usefulness of cleaning the registry is highly overrated and can be dangerous. In most cases, using a cleaner to remove obsolete, invalid, and erroneous entries does not affect system performance but it can result in "unpredictable results". Unless you have a particular problem that requires a registry edit to correct it, I would suggest you leave the registry alone. Using registry cleaning tools unnecessarily or incorrectly could lead to disastrous effects on your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. For routine use, the benefits to your computer are negligible while the potential risks are great.

I have a question about Microsoft driver updates. I was looking at what was available for my machine and saw the NVIDIA display update (7/28/03) and Creative update (6/26/02). They both apply to my machine. Can anyone tell me:

a: What exactly will they improve for me, and

b: Are they worth 14.3 MB of my dialup download time?

This is not life-or-death, but I'm curious because I could not find any links to more specific information on the additional functionality that they might give me.

I would appreciate any help.

A:Driver updates (MS)

The Nvidia update probably will be of no use unless you have a recent card (less than 6 mo old), it may even slow the card down. If you do have a recent card, it's almost always better to get the driver from the nvidia website rather than the microsoft signed one.

The creative update is probably worth the download as you may notice improved digital signal processing through the newer driver.

Like any other software, just go to the developer site and download the last version, if any.
With drivers it's better to be careful and not update just for the sake of it, but only when a concrete problem you're having traces back to a driver.

I haven't personally used this service, but from past experience with others, I have learned NOT to use these kinds of services. Some install older drivers, others install the wrong drivers. Best approach is usually to go to the hardware manufacturer site to get drives.

Ok, I just re-installed my operating system in hope of a faster computer. I was not surprised that it worked. The only problem is that when I browse internet pages, they skip. As I read in another thread, I need to update my video driver. When I went to install the ati driver that I downloaded from their web site, my computer told me that I need to have a standard vga driver to start. I looked at my computer specs, and it doesn't even show my video card on the list of equipment. I have lost the disk to install my video card, so does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this problem? Thanks!

Try installing an earlier driver.

lse872,

Acer posts drivers on their support page. If you are uncertain of which drivers to update with, there is a link above the listed drivers that says: Need to know the hardware on your system to choose the right drivers? If you click on that it will do a scan of your unit and tell you which pieces of hardware you have so that you download the appropriate drivers.

I just want to know what other people think about this subject. I have been an on top of it kind of guy when it comes to having the latest and greatest updates and upgrades that can be found from manufacturers websites about my hardware software updates. I still believe that I should upgrade or update my software for my hardware. However as I read a lot of forum subjects on this and as I share other peoples experiences of problems with their machines behaving correctly after certain updates ( mostly new drivers). THE BIG QUESTION IS: IF my system is running fine now (for all my games and everything else ,this is an example only, for my video card) why should I install their lastest driver for my video card? If I do it may perform better but I am currently experiencing zero problems. It may also0 create problems if I do. What is your idea about this?

A:Driver Updates.

Hi Marshall,

I would say see what was improved, fixed, or added to the new driver version. If it is something that you would need or like, then install the new driver. If it does not seem to affect you any, then you might just wait to see what the next version will have if your currently installed driver is working just fine you.

Another option is to create a System Restore Point before installing the driver incase you need to restore the computer afterwards.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hello all...I have tried several times to get my Rx580 drivers to work with my vista operating system however I am having NO luck. The printer works just fine but the scanner won't work at all. A:RX580 driver updates

Hi Lisa! Welcome to the Vista Forums.

As for problems with your scanner, hm, let's start from the beginning.

Does the scanner show any problem in the Device Manager?

1) Go to Start Menu > Control Panel
2) Open up "Device Manager"
3) Look for your scanner in the list
4) Check to see if there is a yellow or red exclamation point.

If there is, this means there is a problem. Let's found out what that is. Right click the scanner in Device Manager, and go to Properties.

It should show what is going wrong with your scanner. I've found something going wrong on my system, as seen below, but please disregard the fact that is a network adapter. Let's just look to see what error code it's giving you.

There could be a problem with your driver that is installed for the scanner. Let's try downloading this driver, and going through the process to extract the driver files. According to the Epson website, these files should extract to: [i]C:\epson\epson12096[i]

Now, let's try repairing this driver. Let's return to the Properties window under Device Manager (Start Menu > Control Panel > Device Manager > Right click on device > Properties) and select the Drivers tab.

From here, let's select "Update Driver". A window like this should now pop up:

Make sure you select the highlighted option.
Now, you should see a window like this. For demonstrative purposes, I've filled in what you should have filled in. (Note: To get the c... Read more

Your best bet for driver updates is firstly with the PC manufacturers website (assuming its a pre-built machine) and then with the component manufacturers website.

You are correct not to trust Driver Directive or any of these update programs.
Always get updates from your computer maker or hardware manufacturer.

I found I couldn't use Quicktime and got a warning asking me to install Apple Driver Support. Apparently 29 drivers are out of date. They want money to fix them. I picked one, a keyboard from the device manager and tried to update the driver and that worked. I tried others that are supposedly out of date and was told the best driver's already installed. The only lack of functionality I have is Quicktime, probably because I mistakenly uninstalled something somewhere along the way... and a message that tells me there's not enough memory for my TV card and either get a new one or update the driver. I get that message rarely and ignore it. Is it normal to pay for a service to look at your drivers and update them? It seems a bit suspicious. Why wouldn't the seller want the buyer to be happy with his product and farm out his drivers to a third part for resale? Oh, if anyone knows how to get Quicktime working on my machine, that would be good too. I think my specs will be posted below.

No, do not pay for driver updates. Check the manufacture site for drivers. They usually have a support forum too.

A:how to check for driver updates

It depends on whether you have a known factory brand computer or a custom/home build computer.

Drivers are available at the computer's support site.

Drivers are available at the motherboard's support site.

Drivers are available at the manufacturer sites for the hardware in the computer.

Drivers are available at the Windows Update site.

---------------------------------------------------------

If all the devices in the computer are working properly, there's no compelling reason to update their drivers.

Updating them just for the sake of updating them isn't needed.

If you install or update the wrong drivers, you can be left with non-working devices.

I think you will find that the most experienced folks here would not ever touch Uniblue driver scanner or any Uniblue product for that matter. A great running computer does not rely on having the 'latest' drivers, it means using what works. A lot of times updated drivers MAY (and I say may because there is no guarantee) make your system run better, could make it worse, or it'll run the same.

When it comes to Windows, Drivers, and hardware, I say if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Paying $30.00 for updated drivers seems steep, when you can go to the manufacturers website and download them for free, but I guess it's more for convenience than anything.

There's my two cents

I am a ESET user and have Win10 on my Alienware 17 R1.
After several weeks of having 10 working stable on the laptop I noticed that anytime ESET would detect updates for the OS there were a list of devices such as processor and management tool updates that upon doing Windows update never showed up in my list
of update.  If I manually go into the device list after "Show Hidden Devices" I can find some of the things it listed since I didn't remember all of them but then tell the device manger to update the driver and it does just fine.  I want
the OS to update all of these without me having to hunt through the list every time to update them.
Is there a way to force Win10 to see the devices that have driver updates and force those updates to take place?

Howdy, new here and all so I'll cut to the point: I simply cannot find any updates more than 2 years old for my current graphics driver. I've had my computer since 2007 and the first couple years were great, as to be expected, and then slowly in this past year it's gotten ridiculous.

If I had to guess, I would assume many BSODs I get would be due to outdated drivers, regardless of the fact I never get the same message twice. I tried the Intel Update Utility and it gave me the following message:

Product Detected: Intel G33/G31
Current Driver Installed: 7.15.10.1666

A customized computer manufacturer driver is installed on your computer. The Intel Driver Update Utility is not able to update the driver. Installing a generic Intel driver instead of the customized computer manufacturer driver may cause technical issues. Contact your computer manufacturer for the latest driver for your computer.

However, I can't find anything from HP (latest update there is actually older than my current), AMI (regardless of being the computer manufacturer, there was nothing to even point me in some vague direction), or anywhere else for that matter.

I would hope that I can still find support for at least this one since it is likely the most important thing take care of before I can whittle away at some of the other drivers *most likely* being out of date.

But, if it means I need to buy a new graphics card to get different drivers, then so be it. Just don't have the money right now (an... Read more

I have an Acer Aspire 5750G and last night I decided to run some driver updates. I downloaded updates for the wireless card, chipset, synaptics track pad, and the camera. They installed fine but after I restarted I noticed that the nvidia GPU monitor is saying that igfxupdate.exe is running and now the fans are on max. Right now Speedfan is telling me that the CPU Usage is at max and the temps for the CPU are above 80C.(http://i.imgur.com/91ZHd.png) See that image for what Speedfan is saying. But when I open task manager, everything stops. I've left Task Manager open for now and the fans have become very silent.(http://i.imgur.com/vWRod.png) See that image for what it looks like with task manager open. So far I only tried system restore to before I started updating, but that did not fix it. Does anyone know what to do here?

A:CPU Usage at max after driver updates.

I just googled igfxupdate.exe and came up with what might be your problem. I shouldn't post links to other forums but this might help you.
This is not my post submission but somebody elses.

Hi, after several hours of attemps I think I finally found the offender:
much probably a Trojan Generic KDV 792778, it pretends to be the windows service "Search Indexer" and it creates the fake executable: "igfxupdate.exe" which tries to connect in internet and rises the cpu load all the time till you open the task manager to hide itself..
So I solved the problem like this:
in the windows services management console I disabled the above fake windows service (it was in automatic start mode) and after I deleted the igfxupdate.exe file that was in the windows system32 folder..
I rebooted the pc and I deleted the same service with the command: "sc delete SearchIndexer"..
problem solved! cpu back to normal level, not more unwanted connections and not more igfxupdate files around ..
anyway for more safety it's better to do also a complete scan with a good antivirus/malware software.

PS...Google is a valuable asset for looking up problems I just wish more would use it to its fullest potential.

Please, please, PLEASE, when you send out an updated wifi driver, make sure the system remembers all the passwords. Not even a system restore can fix this.

A:Driver updates Scanning Software

DriverAgent is a good one, used by many techs, well Carey Holzman at least. The trick is to know which drivers to apply and which it may be better to skip. The other trick to using DriverAgent is to take it as far as the scan goes, get the list of drivers you can update and then go to the manufacturers support site and download them yourself. Unless you find the service valuable enough to pay for.

ati aiw 9800 128 pro: ccc 5.6, mmc 9.08; asus p4s800d-e: latest drivers and bios updates; Intel p4 3.2; 1024 MB; either audigyz2 or onboard sound.

TV capture freezes after 5-15 minutes. CTRL-ALT-DEL can't end task. Will not soft restart. Other programs still can be run, but screen areas where the video and controls were displayed are painted with any new window contents, not the desktop wallpaper. Starting machine in bare-bones mode even with reduced resolution makes no difference. None of the error trapping programs have found anything.

Original ATI drivers and software still work fine, but don't allow Splinter Cell:CT to run with all the viewing options. I've tried updating ATI drivers for this card for over a year (following ATI's instructions to the letter) and always had problems with the TV capture. So, unless I get help, it's either games or TV.

Anyone?

A:ATI driver updates and TV capture problem

I had a ATI capture card for awile. I found that if you stop most of the ATI software from stating with the pc it helps. Plus make sure there is not a newer version or a patch for your software.

I wondered what people's take on this is. How essential is it to keep updating the GPU drivers? I have an Alienware M17rx3 laptop Sandybridge with switchable GPU (AMD and Intel). The main GPU is the AMD Radeon 6970M. When I got the machine almost four years ago I was religious about updating the AMD drivers. It came with Dell's own driver (based on catalyst 11.5 I believe). Updating the drivers due to the presence of switchable GPU & various laptop specific features was a PITA. Really like playing russian roulette. I used to get lucky using a link from notebook forums and installing over the top. But most people had nightmares losing the switchable ability or function to control screen brightness via the ALienware hot keys etc etc

Anyway, I got so fed up of the constant driver updates. Every single month, seemed like overkill. And also bricking it over the loss of functionality. So I stopped updating them when I reached Catalyst 12.1. Everything works ok. I know it's an older driver but do I really need to be worrying about being so out of date? Things have moved on and it seems if I attempted the install now to latest GPU it's going to be pretty horrific. As I use a cache SSD (dataplex) which absolutely hates crashes/unclean shutdowns I can ill afford a temperamental process. And I have a kind of 'if it ain't broke then don't fix it' attitude now.

I haven't played many games in a long time. Around early 2012 my drivers (12.1) coped well with all the latest releases. ... Read more

A:GPU mobility driver updates - do I really need to worry about it?

Did you try updating them? If you only heard the others' opinion, why not give it a try?

If you get to the situation the other people were, search for System Restore and go to the time you didn't install the drivers yet.

It's essential that you get the most updated drivers, because there will be some fixes over the older ones, have better capabilities and more.

Hello,

I have been having issues with wireless module not showing available networks on this laptop recently. I have had to reboot to get the wireless networks to show up. I checked the Dell site the other day and installed an updated driver for the wireless adapter, as well as the video card, sound card, and chipset. I have had 2 blue screens since updating these drivers (today and Tuesday). One other new item is Kaspersky internet security, which was installed earlier in the week. I have attached the information for review- please let me know if any additional information is needed. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

The other day a friend reminded me to check my video card for driver updates. As it turned out Nvidia did have a driver update and it solved a major issues I was having

Now I'm thinking I might as well see if any other drivers need updating. I don't really want to have to look up every bit of hardware I have and then search for drivers, unless I have to

does software exist that can scan my computer and possibly cut some of the work out for me?

Thanks for your help!

N7110/win7sp1/x64

Hi again after a long absence...

So the title says it, several questions about installing latest drivers on new N7110, windows 7:

Is it really necessary to 1) set a restore point, and 2) reboot after each driver install? Tell me it ain't so...

Bonus question: The 7 search is.... a problem... for me. Would someone point me toward a xp-like search utility to find and dump the crapware Dell installed? I need to be able to see everything and drill through it systematically - like I could with XP search. A FREE program would be preferable.

Thanks.

To clarify, not ALL driver updates require reboot, but almost all, and I've read elsewhere to set a restore point with each. BTW, some new drivers require TWO reboots, one after uninstalling the old driver, then again after installing the new one. Sheesh! I get the reason(s) for individual restore points and reboot, but 23-46 times?

A:dell driver updates on new computer

No, you do not have to create a restore point after each driver - though there's no harm in doing so either. And no, you don't have to reboot after EVERY driver is installed, only certain ones (such as the motherboard / chipset driver). Others can be installed "in bunches" with a reboot after 4 or 5. But why are you installing 23-46 drivers - or am I misreading that????

Also, I just don't use system restore. I use disc imaging, which is a much better solution IMO.

And last, as for what you refer to as "crapware", you have a couple of choices:

1) Just do a clean install - that's what I do every time I get or setup a new system or
2) Open Programs & Features and go through each app that is installed, Google it, and decide if you want to keep it or uninstall it
