Older game sound configuration

Q: Older game sound configuration

Alrightly, i'm trying to play Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, and i'm getting a few errors in the sound config. This has something to do with my sound card being a modern one, and not using the old soundblaster irq 5 and 7 config. I am using Windows 98 SE, and a SB Audigy on IRQ 10. When I run the autodetect I am getting a crash reporting a program error. I have tried all of this is MS-DOS mode as well. Is there a way to emulate an older sound card? (I have seen a program called VDMSound for Windows 2k/NT) This is a large problem, since it prevents me from playing all my old dos favorites, including Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem, and of course Daggerfall.

Any help would be extremely appreciated

I know that this is a long shot, but I'm interested in an older PC game "Harrier Jump Jet 2002". It says it's made for Windows 95 and 98, but might it possibly work on Windows 7? Also it's available on Amazon UK. Would they sell and ship to the US?

I am having difficulty installing an older game (Jack Nicklaus Golden Bear Challange) on my new computer, running Windows XP Home Edition.

The error message I keep getting is:

"An error has occured during the move date process: -46,6"

Here what I have done to try and resolve:

cleaned out temp file
cleaned out TIF files
copied CD to Desktop and run setup.exe from there
Googled 'move date process' and looked at every article - no joy

Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

I have a purchased PC game from Sierra called A-10 Tank Killer 2. I bought it a year after it's release, and it worked great on my old Win. 98se PC. But with my new PC I can't even get the CD to run through the setup. The requirements from the game are such.

System Requirements:
486 DX2-66, 2x CD ROM, 10 megabytes of disk space,
Windows '95, 8 megabytes of RAM, SVGA 640x480 @ 256 colors,
Windows compatible soundcard with DAC, Keyboard and mouse
(joystick recommended).
My new PC is a eMachines with Win. XP OS. AMD Athlon 2600, and 512 RAM., and 80 gig harddrive. ATI Radeon 9800 Pro video card. I would think it's more than enough to run the game. I'd like to know why it won't? Is it possible older games won't work with the XP software? I've tried to look up any info at Sierra and they don't even list the game in their archives. Thanks for any help.

I'm trying to install Warlords III: Darklord Rising (because it's a killer game that I played back in the day). Anyway, I *cough*torr*nted*cough* the game. I went through the unecm and mounted the .cue file.

All went well until I tried to install the game. When I double clicked SETUP.EXE (or clicked install in the autorun) I got two pop up error messages.

The first one goes like this:

Once I click OK I get a second error:

If I click Close, it just exits. If I click Ignore it runs a little (no window appears but the cursor changes to an hourglass for a few seconds) and then exits (I think).

I'm thinking that I may need to mount the .cue image file with some special software. I tried mounting it with the following: DAEMON Tools Pro Agent; MagicDisc. Both produced the same errors.

I also tried burning the image file with Roxio Easy Media Creator 10 Suite. When I tried to install it from the CD I got the same two messages.

I also tried running SETUP.EXE in compatability mode with windows 95, windows 98/ME, and windows XP (sp 2). Same error.

My specs:
OS: Windows Vista 32-bit
Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT (updated driver)

Any help is really appreciated. I really want to play this game again and if I can't get this to work I might have to dual boot XP to try it on that.

I've been experiencing some pretty nasty static from my speakers whenever watching computer game cinematics that predate the year 2000. I tested this theory by trying multiple games that were made 2000 and post 2000 and their cinematics would work prefectly with sound. However, anything that was pre 2000 would cause a rather annoying crackly sound to play through the speakers and would last for a couple of minutes after the cinematic had ended before going away finally.

I also think that this issue may have something to do with the vibration of my dvd rom spinning around because any cinematic plays just fine until the cd needs to be read in which case the computer speeds up the drive and the static ensues. I spent all of yesterday downloading new drivers for my sound card and fiddling around with my Realtek HD Audio Manager to absolutely no avail. I even installed this particular game I'm trying to play - Starcraft - on my wifes PC to see if she was experiencing these same issues...and she was not. Everything played fine on hers.

I struggled to match every last audio-related sound setting I could find between our computers (every last setting in Realtek HD Manager, sound drives being identical versions, general sound settings etc.) but was not able to find the root of the issue it seems. <-- This thread link may prove useful to see just what different approaches have been taken and what-not. Sorry, and as an add-on to what I've said above this problem does seem to extend beyond the cinematics at times. Like when a game is starting up or when the volume is turned up past half-way. But still only with the older games predating 2000.

Hey everyone. I haven't played this game since I had Windows 98. It is NHRA Drag Racing Main Event. It says its compatible with 95, 98, ME. I couldn't get it to play on my XP machine and just gave up on it. It seems to do the same thing on 7 as it did on XP. I can install it and it seems to go in normally. It will install by default in the Program Files(x86) folder. When I try to play it, it will load but all I see is a black screen. I can hear it running but see no picture. I have tried changing the resolution and all compatibility combinations. I tried running it as admin. I tried installing it as admin. I am searching for the name of an older game. I played on windows 95. It was a bunch of wheel like shapes that had flowers, birds etc. and you had to turn the wheels to match up the pictures with matching pictures on the other wheels( and several wheels interlocked with each other, so if you turned one then it may not match the picture on another wheel.). There would be birds fly by every now and then and make tweet sounds. Does anyone recognize this? I think it was called Spring something but not sure. I tried to search on wikipedia but not sure how to ask the question. so didn't find anything, however I also read other posts that say Encarta had games with it. I had Encarta too so this game may've been from that disk. Please any help would be greatly appreciated. Also could this game be played on Win XP?

Hello. I am trying to hookup a Sega Genesis, Dreamcast, and a Playstation 1 to my HDTV. I have a picture of the back of the TV for your suggestions on what I can buy or how I can use what I currently have to make them all work. I have a Playstation 2 hooked up already using up all of the inputs on the back leaving just HDMI and cable box available to use.

I also have a picture of the game and cable box, so you can see if there is a way that I might be able to hook them all up to the game box and make it connect to the Cable box and somehow use the cable box as the input device for the game systems to the back of the TV.

Here are the pictures: (Should be attached at the bottom).
If you all have any suggestions on any device that may be able to work with this setup, that would be very helpful. The back of the game systems each use their own AV adapter containing red, white, and yellow cables. The genesis has only yellow and white cords (no red). The game box seems to be an AV/RF box with 4 buttons on the front to select which game system to use. Not sure if it is working since it has been stored away for so long.

Thanks for your help. If the TV contained a lot more of those RCA inputs on the back, there would be no problem and would not have to use an external box or input device. Do let me know if you need anymore information. I will try to check back often. I am looking forward to hearing your responses. Have a great day.

i know these games arent THAT old... as i played them in windows 7 64bit, before i downgraded to XP so i could use XP in parallels... i will say no more about that.

anywAYS... the games are Unreal, and Unreal Tournament. and they run TOO fast, like 150-200% of what they should be running at. if i adjust the game speed, that helps, but then slows it down waaaay too much, until a guy shoots at me, then it immediately speeds up again, im dead, and then it slows. lol. seems like that anyway. here are my specs.

So I threw a bunch of older components together for use in a shop computer, but now I think the build is so stripped that it's causing some problems. I used a "Lite" version of WinXP home edition for the OS, slipped w/ SP2, so it wouldn't take up a lot of space; to cut down the boot time, but I cannot get any sound out of it whatsoever. I figured I could get it to work by now since I've installed so many sound cards but this has me at a loss.

I think the biggest problem is I am not really exactly sure what sound card I'm using, seriously. It's a creative model ct5803 but I'm not sure which series it belongs to. It reads "Audio PCI" but that does little good. I don't think it's a sound blaster or 16-bit audio adapter so I've been kinda guessing as to which drivers to download and install. I've even downloaded drivers off of the Gateway site because I guess this card was used in some older GW models or something.

All of the drivers have installed successfully, yet there is no sound at all with the volume cranked, not even a buzz. I look in Device Manager and it states the device is working properly but it's clearly not. All of the PCI slots have tested good on this board (CUBX-L) so I'm not sure if the board or card is to blame. I have another old Creative card but that one does the same thing, could they both just be junk?

Also, I suppose the jacks in the back of the card are working because I h... Read more

Hello all

I recently installed a full version of Win7 and much like I have alwasy done, I copied over the themes files from my old "Windows 95 Plus!" program I have to which I use a group of the "Nature" sound files for all my OS activation sounds.

For the most part most are OK as they always have been but a few now are rather chopped as far as playing the whole wav file.

I am using a Sound Blaster XFidelity Board with all the proper drivers.

Now I did notice the same when I played with Vista a few years ago and to be honest I really just think this is something in the OS.

So is this true, does Win7 have some issues with older wav files?

Should I convert them to something else?

Is it something to do with the version of Media player it comes with?

Thanks for any help.

A:Help with choppy sound from older wav files?

I have some old wav files that I've had since Win 98 and they still work OK. About the only possibility is the bitrate of the old wav files. Download and install the free "Audacity" audio recording program. Bring the old wav file into Audacity and then "export" the sound as "WAV (Microsoft) signed 16 bit PCM". Then try this new wav file to see if it plays better. Audacity: Free Audio Editor and Recorder

Hello there. I hope I have posted this message in the right area. This morning I fired up my pc to find an error greeting me. It was that windows was missing a configuration file. I rebooted a couple of times then it came back up.

Once it did tho, it went through reloading all my hardware. Everything was fine so I thought. I then realized there was no sound. Xp is showing the Realtek onboard sound card there, indicating under Audio Devices, Properties that "This device is working properly" and "Driver is enabled but has not been started". However, under the main Volume tab it shows "No Audio Device".

I just got new 5.1 surround sound speakers and i have a couple of problems configuring them properly.

1. with higher frequency there's a static noise, which i believe has to do with treble, in the control panel the sound configuration doesnt offer any option to change this, any tool which i could use?

2.i changed the speaker volume according to where they are, so for example my right speaker for being much closer is quieter.
but now this configuration is assigned to all my jackets, so if i plug in my headphones in the front jacket i have the same alteration.

in the jack information it specifies ALL jacks for that device.
and in the device list there used to be a headphone device too, not just speakers and the 2 other realtek stuff.

is there anyway to change the jacks for the specific devices?

maybe an overall different software which works better and has more options.
thanks for any help.

A:Sound control panel configuration

The high pitched sound usually occurs when you have your out set greater than about 75% of the computer's max and are using high end speakers.
The audio devices in computers just aren't made to push super high volumes and they get over strained when you push the volume way up.

I'm guessing the speakers are already amplified.
I guess that leads to my biggest burning question.

I see you have optical out as an option.
why are you not using that? I mean it's 1 cable for all the channels.

Hi guys, i'm new to this kind of things, had a question which probably many of you already have done:
I bought a new pc, Dell, with a Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio sound card, and a Creative T6160 speaker set. The speakers should be a 5.1 surround system (and in facts i have 5 speakers + subwoofer) but it seems i can't make the subwoofer work at all. Had only 2 speakers working since yesterday, i played a little with the Creative control panel and it seems i made all 5 work together. The problem is that, from the Creative speaker test section (the one where you can make the voice play "this is the front right speaker", "this is the front left speaker" etc.) all works fine except the subwoofer. I looked at the back of my sound card and everything seems done right. Black jack is in the black hole, lime jack in the lime hole and orange jack in the orange hole. The Creative control panel recognizes them as 5.1. Still can't make the sub work. I even tried plugging the green/black jack into the orange hole and i managed to hear the "bzzzz" test sound which should come out from the sub, but nothing happens when i do the opposite (orange jack plugged in green or black hole). Did anyone ever had my same problem? I'm probably not good at searching but i couldn't find anything regarding this...

At work I have a PC w/an Athlon XP 1700 chip, 256 meg of ram, and a Radeon AGP w/64 meg memory video card runing Win XP Pro. So my gaming choices are somewhat limited. I've already played Quake 2 and Half-Life (and Opposing Force & Blue Shift). I like playing the FPS style games (single-player mode). So I'm wondering:

Is Counter-Strike single player or only multi-player? Is it free if I own Half-Life?

Is there a site that would list FPS games by release date year to year? Since I know Half-Life was released around 98, I could look for other games released around then that would probably run ok on my system.

Any suggestions for good FPS games that would run on my system would be appreciated. I'm looking into some of the Star-Wars games, also Halo, and Unreal seem to have good reps and might run ok.

Thanks much,

I purchased a game that has a known sound issue. It only plays all of the sound when using Stereo sound. 5.1 sounds are sadly incomplete. Currently I only know how to change all sound on my system to either be Stereo or 5.1. Is there any way that I can set this one application to use Stereo sound? Perhaps with a third party app?

There are 2 games in particular that I am noticing this problem. They are DEus Ex Invisible War, and Thief Deadly Shadows. When I start up the game everything is fine, I have sound in the intro movies, but when I get to the main menu or when I start the game there is no sound whatsoever. I dont have any other sound issues at all with any other aspect of my computer. Any suggestions? TIA

Also, what do you have running when you're playing the game:

Hi all,

I recently did a system re-build, as per my specs. I've been having awful crackling and sound stutters which sometimes appear to be causing lag spikes in games too. (Having said that, I get it even when doing simple taks like listening to music or watching movies on iTunes/Windows Media Player.)

I've done all the usual things like updating to the latest BIOS/drivers, but still it won't go away. I've moved the sound card to another PCI slot and checked there's no IRQ conflicts too...

Can anyone help please?

A:Sound stutter & game lag

Possibly reducing the sound acceleration would help. On board sound? Usually notorious for crackling. Perhaps a separate sound card is in order?

A:No sound on Copied game CD

When you copied the game. Did you copy it directly from the CD of the game? Ie. do you have 2 CD drives, one which you had the game CD in, and one with the blank CD in?
Or did you have the game already installed on the harddrive, and you just copied those files to the blank CD?
If you have done the latter, then that could be your problem. I would suggest either using the top method. Or if you only have one CD drive (the burner), then I would use the copy method of caching all the information on the game CD, and then burning it to the blank CD.
Well I'm confusing myself here. Hopefully you can understand what I'm trying to say. Anyway, any other information you can provide about the problem would be helpful. Have other games you have copied worked fine? Have you tried burning this game again and seeing if it still doesn't work? Does the game normally work fine with sound? Does everything else on your computer work fine with sound?

ok, so I really have no idea what happened, I'm a fairly tech savvy guy, and would know if I was doing something I shouldnt... but here we go:

Basically, I get home one day and find that none of my MP3's will play.
I get the following error: "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file"

On further investigation, I also found that I have other issues now, such as:
a) I cant hear anyone when I try to talk to them on Skype
b) They were able to hear me but after I rebooted I think the mic doesnt work anymore
c) I can't run a game like Team fortress 2 (I think cause sound doesnt work and it crashes it)
d) When I try to use my scanner it tells me it's already in use, which it isnt, and yes I tried restarting scanner, computer, etc

I have no idea what happened, it kind of seems like some drivers stopped working, but as far as I can tell, they're all there.

if anyone can give me any suggestions to resolve the issues, that'd be great.

I just raked through my games, and found an old gem lying around. I wanted to install it, and all is fine graphically, but I can't seem to set up the sound. Look at the following sequence of events:

I'm not quite sure what to select, so I try the 'Microsoft Sound System'. Then, I go with the defaults for the next three steps.

So it's failed to initialize, and I have no sound, no matter what sound device I try. What can I do to get the sound working again?

During a game, if my pc starts loading, the video starts flickering every second and the sound starts crackling (if that's the right way of putting it). This only happens when the computer starts loading something quite big, this is not due to a lack of lag as I've had this RAM (512) for a long time and I never used to have problems on more powerful games. I've also got the latest Direct X and Graphics Drivers. It's becoming an increasingly annoying problem, any help would be appreciated.

So, when I have Ventrilo running, I can't hear any sound from the game that I'm playing. I can hear people in Vent just fine.
I've tried switching my defaults around both in vent and in the device manager. There's one thing that kind of works. When I select all of my defaults to headset, instead of having it split between the headphones being the default device and the headset being the default communication device, I get sound from both but it's real low quality, like real bad. By the way, the headset and the headphones are actually one physical thing, but Windows 8.1 has decided they should be separated virtually somehow. I know this was a super long explanation, but I wanted to be very specific, because I haven't found anything about what I'm dealing with anywhere online.

I seem to have a barrage of problems this semester. *sigh*. Basically, whenever I am in game (Games tested so far: Hellgate London, World of Warcraft, Warcraft III, Diablo II, Gears of War, etc.) The sound either goes crackled after a while, or the sound channels randomly change at a constant rate, for about an hour or so, then it returns to normal again.

I thought maybe it was to do with what sound configurations each game supports, however I have tested this aswell and so far have had nothing. To see my other post (funnily enough, sound issue also),

I really do not know where to turn. I have exhausted every effort. I have been having a problem with the sound in game. The sound will work perfectly for 1 minute and then it will stop working. I have had similar problems in other game where it will crackle then fade completely out but then it would come back. However it is now simply working fine then it just stops dead. The game im having a problem with is Supreme Commander 2. I know it is a new game but i havent seen any others with this issue. I have however read how people with my motherboard have had problems with other games. The sound only quits in game, any other applications using sound seem to work, so i thought it was a direct x issue. I updated directx, and ran dxdiag and everything checked out, still the same problem.

The really wierd thing is that i have used the onboard sound card, a usb headset, and a pci soundblaster card. All cards/drivers have the same problem i have sound for 1 minute and then nothing. I thought it was possibly a software/driver related issue so i completely reinstalled windows 7, installed the latest drivers for sound, video, and direct x 11. Then i installed the game. That was the only thing installed and the problem still persists. I have exhausted all of my options and hope that maybe someone can help me.

I have two sound problems, which may or may not be related.

1) I have no sound coming from the internet. Firefox, all the latest versions and patches. YouTube and the like will play video but no sound. I've read at least a dozen threads in this forum about exactly that, but nothing has fixed it (KLite Codec Basic pack, wavemapper regedit, etc)

2) I play EVE Online, and while I get rear channel sound, I get no main channel sound. Their loading screen plays sounds fine, but as soon as I get in game, the main channel drops out. I've petitioned their GMs, and after a DxDiag they informed me my sound and video drivers were out of date. I checked with Asus' website, and the one I have installed ( 1/16/2007) is the latest they have. And just on the off chance, I downloaded nVidia's latest drivers as well, but it hasn't made any difference either (version 185.85).

Hello there,

I have been experiencing an issue with my Dell Vostro 1510 Laptop for quite some time now. Whenever I play certain games, 3 maybe 5 minutes go by and my laptop starts to lag heavily. It does not have to be an online game, but this is what it looks like- very heavy lag and I cannot continue to play. This lasts for about 8-10 seconds and stops for about 30 seconds, then repeats again and again. Along with this lag, I get a strange scratchy sound from my speakers like the original background/whatever music from the game, except very distorted and scratchy. Like I said, it will do this with certain games (such as Stronghold Legends or GunZ Online) while other games it does not effect (Counter-Strike or Grand Theft Auto).

My computer is CLEAN of viruses, spyware, malware, etc. All of my DirectX, java, or anything else is up-to-date. I got this laptop from my college about 2 years ago, and it has on it:

OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic SP1
CPU/Ram: Intel Core2 Duo CPU 2.001 GHz / 3069 MB
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS
Sound Card: Realtek High Definition Audio

I'm not sure what is causing this, and why this is happening on certain games and not on others. I hope there is someone out there who can help point me in the right direction for getting this resolved. These "lags" are very annoying and I cannot play some of my favorite games with this.. Thanks for the help in advance!

A:Game Freezing and Weird Sound!

Okay, so I went into the Device Manager and disabled my Realtek High Definition Audio under "Sound, video and game controllers". When playing the game, it still experienced the choppy "lag" but it was somewhat bearable and reduced the lag a little bit. What could this mean?? Is it the sound in my laptop that is causing this freezing??

Hi, Ive got this problem where i got "micro" lag and an annoying buzzing sound coming from the speakers randomly when i play games or a video. Temperature of both cpu and gpu only hit about 60 C after 1 hr of play
Things i tried:
-Updating drivers for Ethernet adapter, bios, graphics card, Chipset and sound card
-Changing from cable to wireless
-Used a different router and isp
- used headphones
-changed the resolution on the games to lowest
-Done a Hard drive ChkDisk run
-Tested Ram using MemTest86+
-Defragmented Hard drive
And i have a laptop which is only 3 months out of the box (although its 2 years old) Its been working fine for 2 months or so it happened only 2 days ago.
Dell inspiron 1545
-ATI Radeon Mobility HD 4330
-Intel pentium T4500 (2.3 GHz,Dual)
-IDT HD audio codec (no idea about the card specs)
-4GB DDR2 Ram
-500GB AHCI connected Hard Drive ( only 150GB used)
-Marvell Yukon fast ethernet controller
I have a youtube video showing my problem-
I also recently had a bsod before this problem I have attached the dump for this also, Dont know if this is the cause. Had to attach as a zip since raw file is 267kb.

I've installed an XP compatible game (Jack the Ripper by Adventure) on my new Windows 7 HP laptop. Seems to run fine except for one annoying problem. About half the time, conversations with the game characters get interrupted by the background sounds. When this happens, the voice track drops out completely for the rest of the conversation. I can work around by using subtitles, but this tends to ruin the atmosphere of the game.

Is there a simple solution, like downloading a driver or something? I've checked the game website and no patches are available.

TIA for any assistance.

sure, why not start by updating the audio driver

When I connect to my XBOX ONE via the XBOX APP on my Windows 10 PC I don't get any of the XBOX sounds, just the video. Same thing if I stream a game, I can hear the game sounds coming from the TV connected to my XBOX but nothing on my PC? Same deal with the menu sounds etc, they come out of the TV speakers but no to my PC? Anybody know what I have to change settings wise to make it happen?

As the title says, my sound drops whenever I play a game on my PC, so I turn the volume up & 20 mins later it blasts out because the sound has reset or is back to its normal level.
This seems to happen is every game, I use a Realtek Onboard HD as my sound but I also went and bought a 7.1 Soundcard (Speedlink Stage 7.1) and it did the same issue, I then installed the Speedlink into my wifes other quad core PC & it is working fine, not a single issue or drop.
I have ever asked some tech guys, who said it may be my AV or programs like "Steam" running in the background, but the wife uses "Steam" also with zero effects, we both use the same AV/security (COMODO Internet Security), and again she has no problems.
I use Cambridge soundworks 5.1 speakers as does the missus.

Is it my new i7 (2600k)? I know there was problems with Intel.

Thank you in advance,

No, nvidia is the audio for your HDMI. From the GPU to the monitor.

It could be a broken jack or wire. Try plugging different speakers into your computer and then try plugging your speakers into a different audio source, if you can

If you think you can, you can look up drivers for both of those devices and make sure you have the most up to date ones. Your motherboard will require all its updates, as well as you video card, and your sound card. But before all this, run windows update to see if there is any important updates you need and any "optional" compatability updates or updates to the windows system. You never know, it could help

I was playing WoW one day and the sound cut. I checked my sound card's USB and speaker connections, and all were connections were secure. So i go to the volume control and make sure i didn't accidently mute anything with my keyboard. All were unmuted, so I went to the Device manager. The sound card wasn't there, and Ventrilo never picked up the card either. I restarted the computer, and it worked from then on, but what im stumped at is why it just disappeared like that. Can you guys possibly help me answer my question?

A:Question: Why did my sound cut in the middle of my game?

Probably a sound driver glitch. If this is just a one off, I wouldn`t worry too much. If it keeps happening, then have a look for any updated sound drivers.

Regards Howard

I don't think this would be considered a gaming-specific problem, as it is probably something to do with my computer and not the game. Anyways, it involves games. I run a program called x-fire which allows users to chat (instant messaging) while in almost any game. It also allows the user to record video, which is where I'm having a problem. The video records perfect, flawless, but the sound is being recorded from my microphone and I can't get it to record straight from the computer. My only options for sound recording that I'm seeing are Stereo Mix, which I currently have it on and records sound from the microphone. The other option is the Microphone its self. I've gone into the sound panel and enabled all devices even the hidden one that was there. I'm running Windows Vista.

Hi all

I don't know if I'm posting this at the correct place. I suspect I have a hardware issue but I thought this subforum was more appropriate.

Here's what happens. Whenever I'm playing a game (never happened outside a game) every now and then the sound goes away (sometimes it goes completely mute, sometimes just some sounds, like music and not the sfx) and the game continues working. Give it two minutes or so and the game freezes! The first times it happened I would reset the computer, but later I decided to wait and it actually does come back but it takes more than 3 minutes.

Every game is slightly different but obeys the same general pattern: sound glitches then game freezes. In alien Isolation when the background music stops, some actions become queued. I can still walk around and press buttons, but doors would only open after the glitch is gone.

This is pretty weird. I'm going to call a technician to see what this is about but I thought I posted this here, just in case this is a known problem with a known solution.

I appreciate any help!

My specs are:
NVidia GTX 970
Intel Core i7-4790K CPU @ 4.00GHz
8.1 GB of RAM
Microsoft Windows 7 Professional Edition Service Pack 1 (build 7601), 64-bit
Any relevant information missing let me know.

I'm having a very perplexing and frustrating problem. I have a custom built system that has the following specs:
Soyo SV-K7V Dragon Plus! AMD Motherboard
AMD 1800+ CPU
1 stick of 128 DDR
1 stick of 256 DDR
64mb Geforce 4 Graphics Card
Onboard Sound

Recently, I installed the game Freelancer onto the computer. As soon as that happened, my onboard sound quit working altogether. Also, everytime I tried to start a program that required sound (All Games), I was hit with an error message saying I was missing a DLL file. I restarted, and the computer told me it couldn't initialize sound because I was missing DSOUND.dll
I fixed that problem by installing a new hard drive that I got as a gift that was already formatted for Windows 98se. My sound started working again, as the DLL files were found on the new OSm and I reinstalled the games. They worked, until I started installing Freelancer again. Now, whenever I try to start any games, I get the error message "Failed to initialze sound. Try reinstalling Drivers or Game."

This is where it gets frustrating. My normal sound, for MP3s, CD and even intro movie sound works great! But In-Game Audio DOES NOT WORK. In Age of Empires 2, for example, all the intro movies work fine. But as soon as I get to the main menu, no sound. I tried starting an actual game, and still no sound. I tried reinstalling Freelancer, and still no dice. Everytime I started the game, I was hit with same error message: "Failed to initialize so... Read more

I'm in the market to buy a headset for chat in online gaming, at the moment game sound is through my gtx cards hdmi to my tv speakers and I want the headset for purely just voice (like Xbox). In layman's terms how would I set it up this way?

A friend said he thought the game sounds as well as voice would have to come through the headset?

I'm using a Razer Sabertooth controller and wondered whether plugging in an Xbox headset into this would give me voice?

A:Game sound through speakers + chat through headset?

Windows limits sound to only one default playback device. Thus if you HDMI sound then you can't have speaker (PC sound card) at the same time.

If you want headset sound (and mic) you would have to change the default playback device to "Speaker".
