Maximum suggested RAM for W98SE?

Q: Maximum suggested RAM for W98SE?

I'm running a P-III/500 machine with an Abit BE6 MB using W98SE.

The MB will support up to three 256MB DIMMs for 768MB total.

I've been getting conflicting advice from salespeople as to whether it's advisable to limit W98SE to 512MB or go to 768MB.

Some say to max it out. One says W98SE has a memory leak problem above 512MB and performance will go down.

Most agreed that upgrading from my current 256MB will show a marked improvement in performance -- apps loading, resources available, less crashes due to pushing the multitasking.

Should I go to 512MB, or should I go to 768MB?

Terry, welcome to the forum. Here is what the specs say about maximum memory: The memory sockets on the system board can be populated with up to four industry-standard DIMMs. These memory sockets are populated with at least one preinstalled DIMM.  To achieve the maximum memory support, you can populate the system board with up to 4GB of memory configured in a high-performing dual channel mode. Here is the Hardware Reference Guide for the computer.  You will find the above information on Page 25. The maximum hard drive size with Win 7 is 2TB. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

I have a Dell with Win 98 and a laptop running XP Home with a crossover ethernet cable and I cannot get the 98 to see the XP on the network. I have been told that there are some protocols or attributes that need changing in the 98 computer to get it to see the XP computer.

I have gotten the laptop to communicate with another XP based computer over the same ethernet cable with absolutely no problem.

Can anyone tell me what to do? Please be polite! All I want is to use the two drives in the old Dell 98 system for storage and backup for the laptop.

Every time this is attempted, a message pops on the MS Works 3.0 installation screen saying: "Setup was unable to find SHARE.EXE on your system. It is required to run this application. Please fix your system and rerun setup."

Any ideas of where to find the SHARE.EXE file required?

Been quite a while since I used DOS, and I forgot how you get into folders and subfolders
What I am trying to do is get from the C: prompt to a subfolder of a program, so I can print a list of jpegs in that folder using the LPrint command ( Lprint dir > prn) since you cant do it in Windows Explorer.
I tried cut & pasting to Word2000, Wordpad, & Notepad with no luck -- instead of the list of pictures, they try to print them out as part of a page, & I have to exit the Provcessor.
The folder I'm trying to get to has a path of

I have a real head scratcher.
I have a small home network. I have a westell dsl router connected to the uplink port of a netgear 5-port switch. When I had a W95/W98 environment, all was well.
I recently purchased a new laptop w XP home installed on it. The XP and W98 machine can connect to the internet through the router w/ no problem.

Here is where it gets weird:
Each PC can only see itself in Network neighborhood. Ihave somehow navigated to the W98 shared drive FROM the XP machine and can read files. But I cannot see the W98 machine, (only the shared C folder) I can also Ping the W98 machine's network name from the xp and it will resolve the W98's IP adress.

Now I cannot see the XP machine at all from the W98 machine. When I Ping its name, it gets nothing, however when I ping its numeric IP adress it replies. I have been able to use PCanywhere on both machines as both the host and remote. I am guessing that it is not a hardware issue.

When I first setup the XP machine I ran the network wizard. I have been loking at all the posts on this. ICF is not set up on the XP machine. I also tried to do "simple file share" under the tools option in "My computer" and that option was not present! This is really driving me nuts, if anybody can helpl I would appreciate it.

Just a thought. I have been using "windows logon" on the w98 Machine in the past. Can I continue to use the mixed OS network in the old fashion or are passwords mandatory... Read more

i jst did a hard drive defrag about a week ago and think it might have done something to my windows 98 se. a couple days ago, my CD-R quit working. the drawer won't open and bot it AND my other CD drive aren't showing up in "my system" anymore.

i've had a few reboots that try to prompt me into safe mode and yesterday after letting the system rest a few hours, the tray DID open, but then my PC totally locked up for over a dozen reboots and is back to ignoring the two drives. the CD drive's door will open and close, but the system still won't recognize that it exists.

i've tried adding the drives back to the system with hardware profiles and PNP but that didn't work.

when i try to find the drives with winamp, i get error messages. one of them is about a missing '?' DLL or something.

is there some trick i can do to get my PC to recognize the drives again without reformatting and losing all of my data that i can't back up? i also tried using my w98se disc to try and recover drivers too in add/remove hardware too.

Is this just a simple case of getting a wire to link them or do I need some software to overcome the different operating systems?

A:Linking W98se And Xp Home

The basics for troubleshooting are:

1. Make sure you have the same IP scheme (e.g. 192.168.0.x).

2. Make sure you have the same Subnet Mask, Gateway, and DNS IP addresses.

3. Make sure you can ping the other computer's IP address. If this fails, just for testing, make sure you turn off XP's as well as any other firewall.

4. Make sure you can ping the other computers by name.

5. Make sure you have the same workgroup name (watch for trailing spaces)

6. For troubleshooting purposes, turn off XP's and completely uninstall any other firewall software. You can always add more complexity after you get it working.

7. With XP, make sure you have the same username and password as the person logging onto the other computers. The default setting for XP Pro is to require a password for network access.

8. More details about how to network XP can be found at:

9. More details about how to troubleshoot TCP/IP networks can be found at:

10. Apply the registry edit to fix the browsing delay from XP to Win9x computers

There continues to be a lot of misinformation about needing NetBEUI or to changing the NetBIOS setting. You can ignore both. Installing NetBEUI to solve a networking problem will just mask a some underlying and potentially important misconfiguration with TCP/IP. The default NetBIOS se... Read more

Corporate Web servers infecting visitors' PCs
Last modified: June 24, 2004, 6:35 PM PDT
By Robert Lemos
Staff Writer, CNET
Security researchers warned Web surfers on Thursday to be on their guard after uncovering evidence that widespread Web server compromises have turned corporate home pages into points of digital infection.

The researchers believe that online organized crime groups are breaking into Web servers, surreptitiously inserting code that takes advantage of two flaws in Internet Explorer that Microsoft has not yet fixed. Those flaws allow the Web server to install a program that takes control of the user's computer.

A:Virus: XP less safe than W98se?

Being in the IT industry these types of articles make me wonder why they where ever published. (aside from making the gen public go "hey did you hear")

Hacking, Cracking, Spyware, Viruse's, Trojans and the list just goes on and on, have been around for the longest time. They existed before it was defined!

Is my old 98se more secure? In a nut shell all OS's are if you never connect to the internet! (some more looped than others)

Im not going to go into detail about how to protect yourself and blah blah, but I will say.

The reason why the low / medium Internet "surfer" gets all the spyware, viruses = They have no understanding of their internet habits as well as email to put is simple.

To surf the Net, IM, Email, Fax, Bank, P2P, is not regulated.

Just because its there dosnt mean for you to use it.

The internet is the ultimate, but you just dont say " hey lets buy a computer and email" (tons of people do)

I'm trying to help out a friend who inadvertently infected his W98SE system with the Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c virus.

I followed Grinler's very helpful guide to removing it:-

4) Security IGuard uninstalled in Add/Remove Programs

5) Double-clicked smitfraud.reg file and a window opened up asking if I wanted to add to the registry, to which I said yes (despite the instructions stating that I should get a message asking if I want to merge with the registry) - is this a problem?

7-11) Ran Killbox - found a box with 'Kernel32.dll' in it (ignored it at the time). Entered each line as stated in turn, and deleted on reboot.

13) Could not find ANY of the folders stated

14) Hijackthis - found and FIX CHECKED 'O4 ..... c:\wp.exe', 'O4 .... iGuard.exe' and several 'O9 ....' lines with 'AntiSpyware' in them despite them not matching the actual ones quoted.

16) Tried to run Hoster - but instead got 'This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists etc etc', under details, 'Hoster.exe caused an invalid page fault in module ....'

18) Installed DelDomains.inf

19) Ran CleanUp!

20) Installed new McAfee VirusScan, could not register with McAfee for updates despite internet connection seemingly being OK. Scan revealed W32/generic.worm!p2p (which apparently is VirusScan thinking Hijackthis is a virus!) and nothing else.

Having bought a new machine with XP Home preinstalled, I decided to keep the old one and set up a wireless network using a Belkin G USB Adapter on each machine.

After carefully following the configuration instructions, the new XP machine can "see" the old one but not access its files (file sharing is activated on both). The old machine which uses W98SE can "see" nothing: there is nothing in Network Neighbourhood.

The one thing which appears wrong is that on the 98SE machine at Windows Setup/Internet Tools/Internet Connection Sharing, if I check the box, I get "Network configuration not complete. Please install network hardware before installing I.C.S."

Now the Belkin Adapter is visible in the lists of installed hardware and software, so I don't understand why I can't install ICS?

Also is the absence of ICS the root cause of nothing showing in Network Neighbourhood?

A:W98SE Wireless Network Problem

If both machines are hitting the wireless router then you definitely do not want ICS showing up. I would check bot computers and ensure that you have file and or print sharing enabled.

Once you have something shared try doing a command line \\computername\sharename and see if you are able to access.

I have seen where 2 workgrouped PC's do not see each other in Network neighboorhood before.

I've got a wireless network setup and it's being shared by two machines, one running XP Home Edition and the other Windows 98, SE. I can "see" the wireless network on the XP machine because a bubble pops up telling me I'm connected and I can also "see" it through Network Connections. In there I can change all sorts of stuff if necessary.

The machine running 98SE connects to the wireless network and can connect to the Internet but I can't seem to access any wireless network settings through it. I can only go into the settings for the network card.

Does anyone know how I can see the wireless network using 98? The reason I ask is that I want to implement WPA and I know I need to put the same key on both machines. I have a few other questions but I'll keep them separate and on another post. Thanks for your help guys.

Hello Hardware Forum,,,,

There is a network that has all W98SE opsys's on it,,,,

It seems that now, since these old systems have been there for this long it has been decided to do BACKUPs (!!!!!).....

One of these systems has a PCI USB 2.0 card installed with a MAXTOR 3100 USB 1.1 & 2.0 80GB drive. This drive was installed 3 years ago and works as expected but cannot be used for the backups

This USB PCI card has 3 empty slots so a search to find any DISK Drive manaufacturer that currently makes a USB 2.0 External Drive at 80GB or greater that will work on a W98SE system,,,,,,

Seems the market has passed on by W98SE. Seagate, MAxtor (now Seagate), Western Digital, and some others have been searched and Support questions asked and the response is basically "W98SE is no longer supported".

Even this older Maxtor 3100 had to have a special driver installed for this disk to work on W98SE.

Does anyone know, other than warehouse type sales, or Ebay, where USB external disk drives at 80GB or greater can be found for W98SE??

Or is the warehouse type sales or Ebay the only way to find a disk drive that will work on W98SE???
THANKS for your time, help, and advice!!!!!

I tried to install the latest nvidia Gforce driver for W98 yesterday for my nvidia card, but the installer said it could not find an nvidia chipset on my computer (??). So I cancelled out of every window, then shut down. Now when I boot, I can't get past the Windows splash screen. How can I roll back, or undo whatever happened? Do I do a safe mode boot? Then what... do I go to Control Panel, System, Display and try to resintall the original driver, or ?? Help is much apppreciated!

A:W98se nvidia driver goof

Tapping F8 at startup should put you into safe mode and if you are on XP cdrom will work and you can reinstall driver there. I would also check the bios if you have onboard video as well as it could have defaulted back to that when you uninstalled the driver.

started up my PC; launched NS and then got the prompt from the profile wizard.
wanted me to set up NS (but i have been using it for years)
i took a look, and saw that after updating from NS 7.1, and changing ISP's, and never deleting anything, I got a lot of stuff in the mozila/profiles folder

there were two accounts in netscape mail.

I got three pages of tips on restoring lost mail & Newsgroup Account Settings profile
but do not understand them.
i'm worried i'll loose my data

i know the incoming and outgoing server settings
at this point i will abandon one of the accounts and the contents of its local directories i was in the process of closing it anyway.
but the verizon account is really important, and the contents of the local folders.

i do not think that creating accounts using the old account l relink the profiles stored with the NS program

so please could someone take me through it?

i am using netmail to get/send my email until this issue is resolved

Ran "Spider" with only these items checked in "Options":
Complete Hard Drive
Remove The Hidden URL
Run In Silent Mode
I ran the prog., then said 'yes' when asked if I wanted to restart System. The computer got to I think the green screen just before the Icon's begin appearing, and a box with the beating drum came up saying that the Driver Base was being rebuilt, then after about 45 seconds the box vanished, & the system finished loading normally.
Is this normal with Spider?
Another QUESTION: Shoud I run "Delete All the Files Created By Spider" each time I use "Spider"?

New computer is an Acer Aspire 1640. Set up for wireless, no connection places to put the cords for my current scanner or printer. Can use the camera and go online with ethernet connection to DSL modem.

Old computer is a Compaq Armada E500. Works with printer/scanner/camera and uses the same ethernet cable, pinch it from previous machine as either/or can use it to connect to the DSL modem.

Wish to
a) have both computers able to use the internet at once.
b) enable moving of files from old computer to new initially and periodically
c) access utilities (printer/scanner) by the new computer (they have serial connections)

Have chosen to start a home network on the New computer, but it gets stumped when it wants to write a disk to be uploaded on the old computer. There is no 3 1/2" floppy either, and I can't get it to write to CD.

Know nothing about the process, or parts to purchase . How should I best go about doing this please? Where to now?

Apiologies. Yes, it was PARALLEL connections. Still is parallel connections.

Have still been looking/asking and trying to feel my way here. Joining via a switch-box and two more ethernet cords have been suggested, with the XP machine to do the finding and linking. Computers can each access the internet via ethernet to DSL modem, just not at the same time.

Am I on the right track? Have yet to make purchases, am in the country, so visits to town don't come that often.

I own a Toshiba Portege A100 laptop. I want to install Windows 98 SE. I first had a look at the drivers download in this UK site. It appears there are no downloads for Windows older than 2000. I can only download 2000 or XP drivers.

Is it possible to get at least the sound card and wireless network drivers for Windows 98 for this type of laptop please.

A:Can't find drivers (W98SE) for my Portege A100

Unfortunately it was not able for me to find the Win98 drivers for this unit and I assume that the Win98 drivers are not designed for this unit.
I have also check the website of Toshiba US and Toshiba Australia but without any success.
The only way is to check other units which have the same devices/parts and try to use these drivers.

i am starting a new thread
although this was a previously posted issue

we have three computers on a netgear router
all three access the Internet through the netgear

2 are W98SE and the third is WXPpro
no password is required to start up any of them

the three computers appear in network neighborhood (or network places)

we can access the W98SE machines form the WXPpro machine, but cannot access the WXPpro machine from either W98SE machine, because we are asked for the password.
we can access two W98SE machines from each other w/out p/w

all computers are set to mshome

i need baby step setup help.
can anyone recommend a good tutorial?

and how do i determine each computer's IP address?

A:setting up network problem W98SE & WXPpro

Although you can log in locally without a password, by default, WindowsXP Pro does not allow network users to access the computer without a password. Typically you will receive an Unknown error 31 if this is the case.

To change this setting:

Run gpedit.msc
Go to Computer Configuration / Windows Settings / Security Settings / Local Policies / Security Options
Double click on Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console login only
Disable this option

.Just bought a Canon CanoScan N670U, & am j-u-s-t about ready to box it up & take it back

Basically, what happens is that when I try scanning thru Canoscan Scangear Toolbox 3.0 I get 2 boxes: Box #1 has a white X on a red background telling me "ScanGear-CSU can't communicate with scanner, cable may be disconnected. Check status. Scanner Driver will be closed."
Box #2 is a Yellow Triangle with exclamation point telling me its unable to open TWAIN Source, please check cable then try again.
THEN if I try to scan thru a program which was included called "ArcSoft PhotoStudio 2000" I get the White X on red warning I mentioned above.
WHEN I GO into "Device Manager" I get a yellow exclamation point telling me a device on the Hub is drawing too much power & Windows can't access it & to unplug the device.
NOW ... the 4 Port Hub I'm using can be ran off Bus power, OR a wall-type power supply. HOWEVER, when I try using the wall supply, my computer LOCKS UP, only the HD light and cd/DVD lites are on, pressing the "on" button on the comp has no effect, & only way I can get the computer to operate normally is to unplug the Hub's power supply.
I'm at the end of Ideas, any ideas on what's going on or should I just take this N670U back, & look for a parallel type scanner

Unfortunately, all I know about the onboard sound, video, & modem is what's in the signature since I can't find the original sales paper.
However, this computer was bought in Sept. 2001, so considering its age, I'm not even sure that drivers are even available now.

Hello All,,,

THANKS for your help, advice, and time!!!

I see from a SEARCH in this forum that the display of graphics files in html code displays with a RED X has been reported.

However, this one seems a little different.

A web page from a a remote server with links to graphic files (gif, jpg, png, etc.) and IE 6 will download these files and display all the graphics.

In this case with several computers on a LAN all with W98SE and Internet Explorer 6 they all display these graphic files as expected.

That is except one of these computers. In that computer the following occurs for graphic files:

1. Almost all graphic files are downloaded to the folder c:\Windows\Temporary Intenet Files .
2. The graphic files that are downloaded will display as expected.
3. PNG files are not downloaded and as a consequence nothing is displayed, not even the RED X.
Here is what has been performed and examined:

The IE 6 that was on this machine was completly redelivered. And, if a remote web page contains a link to a PNG file, IE 6 still will not download any PNG file from that web page server to this computer to the C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files folder. The remainder of the WEB page will display as expected to include gif, jpg, etc. graphic files. And, these files can be found in the C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files folder.
But, the PNG files cannot be found in that directory.

Same is true even after all Microsoft UPDATEs were re-installed for this IE 6.

A:Suggested Hjt Log

Hello healing41 and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I see no signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean.

Fragmentation isn't really a malware issue. It is just a natural occurance that happens over time. XP has a built-in defragmenter and there are many 3rd party disk-defragmenters. It is good to defragment a drive occasionally but unless the disk is heavily fragmented and the free disk space is less than about 10% of the drive there will probably not be a noticible performance improvement. The 2 files that will have the biggest impact from fragmentation are the swap file and the Master File Table which can only be defragmented with 3rd party defragers. NTFS file systems handle file fragmentation better than the old FAT system found on older operating systems like Win98 so an acasional defrag with the built-in XP utility should be Ok.

Hi friends,
I am an exclusive FF user (except for MS sites ).
I found a very good extension for FF which I would like to share with you. Its called Flashblock 1.5.1. Go to Mozilla homepage>extensions and search with above name. You will find it.
It stops all the flash materials on an webpage and gives you an option to allow it to play it or not. As most of the flash materials are AD so it also increases your security.
My yahoo pages are loading lightning fast now. Try it & LoL.

Often when I log on to IE 9, suggested site icon appears on my favorites bar. I can remove the icon, but the suggested sites (3), keep coming back. How can I get rid of this icon once and for all.

A:IE 9 suggested sites

If you right click in the top bar you can uncheck the Favorites bar, but also via Tools - Internet options - Advanced - in the Browsing section, ensure that the box for Enable Suggested Sites is also unchecked - Apply - OK

Hello !! Welcome to SF !!

I guess the IE is messed up resulting this behaviour. The best thing to do would be to reset IE to default settings then try to turn off suggested sites might fix it.

I am looking for a tool that will rip cd's into MP3 format, and write/rip blu ray discs easily and quickly. Whats the best software out there for this? Also, I don't think that windows media player plays Blu-Ray discs, so I was hoping someone could show me a good program for playing those.

For ripping, try WMP itself. It's pretty good at ripping music CDs and the like into MP3.

Not sure if I have put this in the right place but here goes
1. Browser Choice. In Europe we get this option. But when it is taken (I stayed with IE10) the Browser Choice App remains and I cant get rid of it. There seems to be no means to uninstall it. Tried various sites on the web nothing works.
2. In the useful tutorial on backup using W7 recovery in Control Panel there is an option to backup system image to an external drive. I have one @1Tb but it starts then says cant proceed drive full - when it clearly is not. Any ideas? Is it not possible to backup the system image to SkyDrive ?
3. I do not use the Start Screen (Metro) as such but do put into it useful stuff that I need at odd times eg Administrative Tools. There seems to be no way to resize or recolour the tiles apart from "large" or "small". This is a nuisance as it gets too big to fit the screen. I found a site on the web that says it does this but my Rapport tells me it is unsafe so I have not tried it.
4. Is there a way to sort a block on the start screen(Metro) alphabetically without dragging tiles around one at a time.
5. A tutorial on each of these would be grand. I have found tutorials truly useful generally.

Having had more than my fair share of experience with viruses and spyware recently, here's the 2 tips that I give all my customers:

1 - Never click on anything that pops up on your screen unexpectedly. Just right click on the application (usually it's Internet Explorer) in the Task Bar and select "Close" from there. Alternatively, press Alt and F4 simultaneously in order to close the active window. Still another alternative is to use Task Manager (Ctrl - Alt - Del) to close the offending program.

The reason for this is that the "bad guys" can make the window say anything that they want. For example, they can make the little X in the upper right corner of the window (normally used to close a window) actually install the bad stuff on your system.

2 - Don't ever, ever open any email! Yeah, that's a bit extreme - but the bad guys can fake an email from your best friend and you'd never know it until you checked with your friend.

So, always suspect emails with attachments - they're where most of the damage is done. It doesn't matter if it 's just a picture, or if it's a strange file that you have no idea about - they can all be infected with viruses. If you open one, make sure that your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs are running and scanning.

The best way is to "preview" your emails before opening them. Using web-based email, read the text before deciding if the attachment is from someone safe. For email on your computer, use a ... Read more

good point usasma, i know as of late i have been seeing alot of the popus that have an embedded X to close the popup and once you click it will either open a new browser or send junk to your cookies from trackign to even spyware.Alt F4 is the way to go.this is a very valid point ; I recently 'worked' on a very badly infected computer ; the owner and the child felt something was wrong when strange web pages appeared on their computer ( needless to say the child had been using P2P stuff); to close the popups' windows they too clicked on the X in the corner; by so doing matters went from bad to worse and worse and worse..........their delay in seeking help and continued use OF the P2P stuff until I met it , and saw for myself what WAS happening meant that ,despite input and guidance from experts ON getting rid of this rubbish to try to clean it , eventually proved to be impossible and a complete reformat and reinstall was required so, X marks the spot where preferably NOT to go on pop-ups

Hello, I've been lurking on these forums for a while, and decided to finally register and add a few of my thoughts on software here. There are some excellent threads on good software around this part of the forum, but as always I have some favorites of my own.

Here's my list of useful (free) things; It's not a COMPLETE list, see the stickies for that.. Some of the things I'll list here are alternatives to suggested software in other threads, I'll try to give a brief comment on why I prefer one over another.

NKProds nCleaner - While ccleaner does a good job, it has messed things up for me a number of times. nCleaner hasn't caused any problems at all for me (yet). It does a wonderful job of cleaning up (both disk and registry), and also includes some basic tweaking. The UI is a huge improvement over the really unintuitive ccleaner, and is definetely a better choice for inexperienced users (I recommend it for everyone though, regardless of level of expertise).

PeaZip - It looks better than 7-zip, unpacks TONS of formats and has a native x64 binary... Nothing else to say.

HotSwap! - Safely remove eSATA drives (and other stuff if you choose).... Yes, it needs to be done.

Serious Samurize - Widgets on steroids, there's nothing more customizable. It's not made to be simple though, so expect to fiddle about ALOT if you want something unique.

There goes... Just my few cents.

A:Some suggested software that does a great job.

FWIW, 7Zip also has native 64bit binaries as well....

But I do like Pea, almost as much as I still love me WinRAR....

But when i click on a normal link like when you click on a word to bring up another page, that works but not all the time...i re installed explorer 7....didnt work...i tried suggestions from members on this board to do with regedit changes and that didnt work..even though i must say that after doing the regedit stuff, and then i opened another web page, the words internet explorer did appear for about 3 seconds...i tried spybot, stopzilla, etc and nothing seems to computer is up s**t creek without a paddle....maybe internet explorer 7 isnt as good as its suppose to be or just something gone wrong with my computer...let me know if you need to know anything else....thanks to those who volunteer their time to help me......

I started having a BSoD Loop occur this morning.
I built this computer about one month ago.
I actually was having a similar issue with my prior PC

The only hardware that is the same in the tower is the RAM and the Power Supply.
It has taken a long time to be able to compile this information between crashes.

Most Common BSoD ERRORS:
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (Was the first I received)

I have several warning events for:
The driver \Driver\WudfRd failed to load for the device SWD\WPDBUSENUM\{af6ce934-2f17-

That may coincide with the crashes, i am not sure.

I ran a system restore

I ran windows update

I ran Driver Verifier

I have disabled fast start up

I have disabled Drivers that show up yellow in safe mode (Printer and Generic PnP Monitor)

I changed my allocated Virtual Memory/Page File size

I ran one full pass of Memtest86 with 0 errors

I then reran it with all CPUs in parallel for more passes, but it would crash in the first minute.

Prime95 instantly crashes

Thank you so much for any help you can provide, and let me know if there is anything else I can provide

Ok, quick synopsis: I've had more frequent pop-ups, but nothing insane. However, my computer has been running extremely unstable. My desktop backround has been replaced with an "ad" informing me of spyware infection and I've been unable to change it. My audio drivers constantly and randomly go out, leaving me without audio. If I leave my computer idle for 10 minutes or so Windows crashes and I get that blue screen. Upon restart, I get the blue screen 4 out of 5 times. Overall it runs very slowly when it is operable. I'm unable to update my virus definitions in both AdAware and Ewido (or whatever it's called) and my computer can't make it through a scan.

I went through the five steps, but was unable to complete the Panda scan as my computer would crash before completion. Here's my updated log, thanks in advance for any help--it's much appreciated:

Hello and welcome to TSF.

Apologies for the long delay in response. We have a large number of HijackThis logs to handle and it?s taking us longer to catch up. If you haven?t received help elsewhere already and still require assistance please post a fresh HijackThis log. However, you are using an old version of HijackThis, please follow the instructions below do download and run the latest version.

CLICK HERE to download the HijackThis Installer:Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Double-click on HJTInstall.exe to run the program.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
Accept the license agreement by clicking the "I Accept" button.
Click on the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click "Save log" to save the log file and then the log will open in Notepad.
Click on "Edit -> Select All" then click on "Edit -> Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and paste the log in your next reply.
Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

You may uninstall/delete the older version once you have successfully downloaded and installed the latest version of HijackThis v2.0.2.

Free Microsoft Security Essentials Holds Its Own Against Paid AV - Softpedia

A:To all that use and have suggested Security Essentials

Nice to know.
I use it exclusively, mostly because I don't see a reason to use anything else at this point. I'm not going to pay for something just for the feeling that "paid is always better".
I have it on my moms netbook(Win7), my laptop(Win7), my kids pc(XP), and my old pc(Vista) which my kid uses when he's at my place. Not once has there ever been a problem.

But always keep in mind, browsing habits are the first line of defense. Doesn't matter how much you did or didn't pay, if you're not careful in the first place, it WILL happen....protected or not. Nothing is perfect.

A:Updated Hijack This; they suggested this

Welcome to the BleepingComputer Forums. Since it has been a few days since you scanned your computer with HijackThis, we will need a new HijackThis log. If you have not already downloaded Random's System Information Tool (RSIT), please download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by random/random which includes a HijackThis log and save it to your desktop. If you have RSIT already on your computer, please run it again. Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT. Click Continue at the disclaimer screen. Please post the contents of log.txt. Thank you for your patience. Please see Preparation Guide for use before posting about your potential Malware problem. If you have already posted this log at another forum or if you decide to seek help at another forum, please let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and taking the time of two volunteer helpers means that someone else may not be helped. Please post your HijackThis log as a reply to this thread and not as an attachment. I am always leery of opening attachments so I always request that HijackThis logs are to be posted as a reply to the thread. I do not think that you are attaching anything scary but others may do so. While we are working on your HijackThis log, please: Reply to this thread; do not start another! Do not make any changes on your computer during the cleaning process or download/add programs on your computer unless instructed to do so. Do not run any other tool until ... Read more

Help! My search browser keeps going to about:blank and I get a "Home search" page come up. I tried the recommended method in an earlier thread to run swsserviceremove, cwshredder Hijackthis and aboutbuster. It worked the first time I rebooted and opened IE, but then soon resorted to the initial problem. Here is the Hijack log:

Everything was running fast and fine, and then "bam", things started slowing down. Going from page to page is like dialup. I have XP Home and from time to time when one user logs off, the screen goes black and we have to turn off and restart. I have run Spybot, Norton, CWShredder, etc. I also checked BlackViper, but I would rather have someone take a look a my Hijack before diving into my registry. The only thing I have installed in the last 3 weeks was the America's Army game. I uninstalled two days later.

Hi, I had a post from another part of the forum when I thought it was just firefox I was having trouble with. Then I was getting problems elsewhere too. If it's an infection it must have happened pretty fast. I reinstalled firefox and the problem persisted there, but like I said weird behavior on other browsers too and also had computer screen freeze and make weird beeping sounds twice and I shut it down and restarted. Here was my original post:
"I don't really know if it was a hard disk or a hard drive or if it's related to the problem in any way. I've also had a cat walk across the keyboard a few dozen times. Could've been that! Anyway, I had my laptop hard disk or drive go bad and all my info get wiped after only a few months with this new Dell. No sign it was going it just went out of nowhere. First time this happened to me out of nowhere. I lost a CRAPLOAD, people! Anyway, I reinstalled firefox which is my favorite browser and now it's acting very strangely and I can't seem to figure it out.

I got a pop-up window stating that I needed to install a critical update (unfortunately I didn't get a screenshot of this, just clicked okay). A subsequent window cryptically stated, "ThinkPad BIOS Flash Update Utility: Version 29.17, please choose Update ThinkPadBIOS or Update model #" without explaining why I'd need to do so, although the window looked otherwise legit. I ignored the window and it hasn't come up again. Also, I couldn't find anything on this site or elsewhere about a critical BIOS update needed for my laptop. Should I be concerned about updating my BIOS?I checked the bios version from my command prompt, and it is 1.17.
