Ultrabay 2000

Q: Ultrabay 2000

As a newbie to this site, I am not sure exactly where to post this question, so I’m guessing it is a hardware issue.

I recently acquired an IBM ThinkPad T20/T21. This unit contains what IBM calls an Ultrabay 2000 port on the side of the unit. This is the source of my question/problem. The Ultrabay port and software allows the hot swapping of the interchangeable FDD and a CD-ROM modules. Under the installed Win 95 OS, the Ultrabay worked fine.

In order to gain use of the USB port on the unit, I just completed an upgrade from Win 95 to Win 98 SE. I upgraded using an OEM disk and in the end wound up with both a Windows directory (for the Win 95 OS) and a Windows.000 (for the Win 98 OS) on the HDD. After a little re-mapping, I’ve gotten the audio, video, modem and mouse/trackpoint to work fine. My problem is the Ultrabay. Even with the latest IBM drivers, the Ultrabay port/computer will not recognize the CD-ROM. If I boot up with the FDD installed, both Windows Explorer and the Ultrabay S/W recognize the module and everything works fine. If I then hot swap to the CD-ROM, the Ultrabay SW sees the drive but indicates it is inoperable by placing a large red ”X” through its icon in the system tray. Windows Explorer does not see the CD-ROM at all and still reports an FDD. If I boot up with the CD-ROM in the port, Windows Explorer sees the CD-ROM and allows full use of it, the Ultrabay SW however continues to show the red “X”. If I try to hot swap back to the FDD the system locks up.

If I look at the Control Panel/System/Device Manager I see the following:

1) Most of the time, but not always, the “Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller” is reporting both an I/O and an IRQ 15 resource conflict.
2) There are 2 devices “Other Devices” with a yellow “?”, one is the Ethernet device and the other is Unknown

Following the Windows Troubleshooting guide and removing the reported conflicts and/or the Unknown device, does not correct the problem with Ultrabay.

Anybody have any ideas on a simple fix ???

I have considered reformatting the HDD and re-installing W 98SE clean, but I don’t know how do I do it with this unit. If I use the Win 98 Startup disk (with CD drive support) to boot from, the computer correctly sees that I only have the FDD installed in the Ultrabay and no CD, so it aborts the CD driver install part and I have no access in DOS to the CD. If I try to boot with the CD-ROM installed, using a copied Startup disk on CD, the computer continues to ignore the drive as indicated above and reverts to the HDD boot and for now, Win 98 pops back up. I don’t know what would happen if I had wiped the HDD first.

Can I use the Fdisk/s to get the machine to run in DOS and then copy the Win 98 CD to floppies 1.44 meg at a time and copy to the HDD and then execute ???

Please HELP, this is not only very frustrating but also is affecting the operation of the unit

Picked up a T-61 for a song and love the beast, but I'm having a problem with the hard drive Ultrabay that came with the Laptop. The drive isn't being recognized.  I've tried several SATA drives of sizes between 50 gig to 1 Terabyte, and all fail to recognize in the OS. (I've tried Win 7 and 10) The drive shows up in the Bios, regardless of which of the actual physical drives I've installed, and passes the Bios diagnostic, and the Drive shows up in the Device manager, but the OS can't see it. Deeply confused, hoping for a silver bullet. The DVD Drive Ultrabay works just fine, but no HDD in the other bay can be found by the OS, any suggestions?

Just as the title states. When the y400/500 were first announced and then released, I was so excited. Using the concept of removeable slots,, as found in business machines, to augment a gaming machine seemed like a brilliant idea. And it was, they sold like hotcakes. The y410/510p made some incremental improvements, like activating the iGPU with Optimus and increasing the resolution on the 14" model. As expected, they were popular as well. Then came the y40/50 and now the y700 series. Lenovo completely designed their gaming lineup, removing the ultrabay and cutting fuctionality. Why? I can have 2 full sized HDD/SSDs and a 42mm M.2 installed in my 14" y410p, but the 15" y50/700 only has 1 full sized bay. Just what. Then instead of 850/860M SLI we get a single 860M in the y50, which was updated to a 960M in the y700. Yes the 860M is a decent card, and beats the 755M handily, but it's practically on par with 755M SLI. I just find it strange that such a great concept on such popular machines was cut. I'm sure there were issues, but removing the ultrabay just makes Lenovo's newer laptops just another crop of mid ranged machines. They lost a lot of what made them special, and what I feel made the brand take off after the y580 generation.

Hi!

I didn't know where to post this specifically. Hence I chose the General Support section.

I have a ThinkPad T530. The main disk is an SSD (on which Windows 8 is installed and is the primary boot device). In the ultrabay slot, I have a 500GB hard disk. There used to be an optical drive here. I replaced it with the stock hard disk since I needed storage more than optical drive.

Anyway, on startup (as well as resume from standby and hibernate), I don't need the disk to be recognized. I want it to be done manually. Is there a way to stop windows from recognizing the device every time it boots? Presently, I am doing a "Safely remove device" after every start up, which is kind of annoying.

Hope you got what I am trying to say.

Thanks,

If this is the case, then why are there a bunch of Nvidia files on it? If this is not the case then how do I get the card working, I see it with a Error Code 43 in device manager.

Got way too many ThinkPads around here and decided to retire my T61.  It had a 128gb Intel SSD I cloned it and installed a small hard drive so it can be reused/recycled.  I cloned my T400's HDD to the SSD.  Good for day to day use and I have gobs of cloud storage.  After 4 years or so the $00 gb HDD only took about half the 128 SSD.  My Ultrabay frame is supposed to be here tomorrow and I intend to install the 500 gb drive in it.  I'd like to use it for my primary storage.  I'm clueless as to the best way to do this.  I've never considered doing this before but realized that I hardly ever used the CD/DVD drive and unlike the MacBook, I can still swap them with out a set of tools and an hour or so to do it.

Hello everyone. I have recently got a new ThinkPad L540. Since I need to use Windows 7 (TrueCrypted company Installation on normal SSD) and Ubuntu I bought a HDD Caddy for the UltraBay together with a 1TB HDD. My problem is, that I can not select the second HDD (HDD1) in the BIOS to boot from. It does not show the name of the drive, just HDD1. HDD0 has a name that indicates that it is the Intel SSD. The new drive is visible and usable in Windows and when I use a USB-Drive to install Linux on that second Drive.Furthermore I switched the SSD and the HDD and the L540 boots sraight up into Ubuntu. When I switch back its boots Windows 7 again. During the Ubuntu installation I tried both, writing the GRUB2 bootloader to the root-partition or to the beginning of the HDD (schould be the same since the root-partition is the first on the drive). Gparted is also thelling me that the root-partition is bootable. I hope somebody has an idea!Thank you very much for your help in advance!!!

Hello, I'm new to Lenovo and I'm about to buy one of the Y510P (59373392) with single graphics and the 1TB version. The last question I've got is whether it is possible to install an additional SSD via the DVD slot-in. I don't need the DVD drive, so it would be wonderful to install a 128GB or 256GB SSD. I've read some topics and saw that the motherboard doesn't have a mSATA connection but it must have a NGFF connection if I'm right. Since I'm not very experienced with laptops, here are a few more questions 1) If it is possible to install an additional SSD, what products are available?2) Where do I get the UltraBay adapter?3) Would it then be possible to make the SSD the bootable drive? Thanks in advance!

hi thewavelength,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

You can use a caddy for this.
http://hddcaddy.com/en/lenovo-ibm-hdd-caddy/432-lenovo-ideapad-y510p-hdd-caddy.html

But the SSD you can use here is a 2.5 SSD not the msata one.
  this kind :
       http://www.crucial.com/store/ssd.aspx

ODD can be set as primary boot and should be able to boot windows from it.
BIOS has to be set to legacy.

Hope this helps,
Cheers!

I recently bought an ultrabay adapter off ebay that was compatible with the T400/T400S.  The Lenovo part would be ThinkPad Serial Hard Drive Bay Adapter III, P/N 43N3412.  I took out the original 250GB HDD and put an Intel X25-V in the main HD bay.  Then I put the original drive in the Ultrabay Adapter.  When I power up the machine the Ultrabay drive spins up for a second and the light on the adapter comes on and then the drive turns off.  The Ultrabay drive is not found by the BIOS, I have 1.20-1.07 installed.  I called Lenovo tech support and was told that there is no Ultrabay adapter for the T410, and the website confirms this when I search for storage adapter accessories for it.  Is there some way to get a second HDD to work in the Ultrabay? [EDIT]The solution. Thanks to Dd16. To enable the DVD automatic power off feature, open the Advanced view in Power Manager, go to the Power Plan tab and expand the System Settings dropdown. Now set Automatic Optical Drive Power Off to Enabled on AC and battery. (You'll be able to see and set this setting Automatic Optical Drive Power Off only if your DVD drive is inside of your ultrabay.) I would like to replace the DVD drive in a ThinkPad P70 with a 2.5" hard disk, and I have trouble finding the right adapter. I have found several references here and on other sites to the part 00NY314. I have ordered it from IBM, and it's indeed the right shape, but it's only the plastic shell with a metal bottom, and there is no connector for the HDD. Here's a picture of the part that I have received. Note the absence of connectors. ?I have called Lenovo support, and they told me that the part 0B47315 might be the right one. I have ordered that one, too, and while it has all the necessary connectors, it doesn't have the right shape, so I believe it's not appropriate for the P70. Did anyone actually order the part 00NY314? Were you able to connect the HDD? Where did you order it from? Did IBM ship the wrong part? What's the correct part number for the adapter?

Hi everyone, If you don't want to read everything, just scroll down to the underlined part  For 3 years now, my Y500 (gt650m sli, second gpu in Ultrabay) had been working fine. But now, there is a problem. My primary gpu, i.e. the one attached to the motherboard, not the one connected via Ultrabay, appears to be broken. The Problem:Occasionally, the primary gpu has malfunctions. Therefore, I have to use the device manager to switch it off. Otherwise, my laptop tends to reboot out of an instant after running for some time. There are times when I can use the gpu for several hours without any problems, but there also are times when I cannot use it at all. When I switch it off in the dev.man., move my notebook, and switch it on again, there is a probability that the gpu might work. Hence, I assume a hardware issue. The Story:The problem first appeared after a really nasty circumstance; I took my notebook with me in its bag (a rather fluffy bag to prevent the notebook from blows) and suddenly, I realised that the bag became hot. The reason was a Windows update started out of standby... The notebook crashed with 34% of the updates installed. Afterwards, I had to reinstall Windows or nothing would work. (The crash at 34% seems to originate in the empty battery, but that's not for sure)After the reinstallation, said issue occured for the first time. Hence, I reinstalled the OS several times. Currently, I am using the OS from the OKR with the automatic (inescapable) updat... Read more

I have a thinkpad t430s and I bought a new supposedly oem lenovo 43 ultrabay battery. When I insert the battery it is recognized that a battery was plugged in but it stays at 0%. I've tried all different combinations of reinserting it before and after reboots turning on and off the ultrabay in the bios. The CD / DVD ultrabay drive works fine, although since the connectors inside are totaly different I doubt that is relevant info. What is the best way for me to figure out if the problem is this battery or the laptop? Or could it be a software issue... any help would be hugely appreciated. One of the main reasons I acquired this laptop was the use of the ultrabay batteries. Thanks

Hello, I bought a y510p in december, and ever since getting SLI to work after the Win 8.1 upgrade, I've been completely dissapointed by the performance of the ultrabay GPU. It overheats and crashes the nvidia driver in minutes. While the on board GPU remains at acceptable temps, the ultrabay GPU will steadily rise in temperature untill the driver crashes, while playing somewhat demanding games like Bioshock Infinite, Witcher 2 or Wargame AirLand Battle. Ironically I get far batter performance in these games, if I disable SLI and only run the games on the on board GPU. In less intensive games like Red Orchestra 2, temps are not critical and SLI works fine - this is however a moot point, since I would be able to run these games just fine without an extra GPU. I paid a lot of money for that extra GPU, and seeing it being effectively useless is quite infuriating.  Inb4: Yes, I have the newest drivers. Yes, I've cleaned for dust. Yes, I've undervolted the CPU and underclocked the ultrabay GPU and drastically reduced the in game graphics quality - which brought me to the conclusion that I get better quality disabling SLI altogether.  Unless there is a solution to this, I will absolutely be taking the machine back, as in its current state, I feel that the ultrabay card is effectively useless. Futhermore I get the feeling that Lenovo just jammed it in there without any consideration as to whether it would actually work out practically.  Below i... Read more

Hello, Last week i received my Y510P from a reseller here in Lithuania, and ran into a *slight* problem. When playing more demanding games (though i wouldnt call borderlands 2 a very demanding game), the screen freezes and the sound hangs. Occasionally the display would turn pitch black (sometimes the drivers just reset with screen backlight still on). I checked memory, sshd, cpus and main gpus for errors, but none were found. I have no idea how to test the ultrabay though... Temps are pretty high, but definetly not critical. CPU runs below 85c under load, main gpu runs at around 75c, only ultrabay runs hotter, but i've seen people saying that theirs run above 95c and it still works fine. Mine usually crashes when it reaches 91-93c. It reaches those temps in about 30-60 minutes, steadily heating up.  I tried removing and re inserting, but it didnt have any effect. Im stumped. Will someone please explain to me briefly what the difference is between all of these? Why would one want one over the other?

I guess that Windows 2000 is sort of like NT Workstation. If not, please tell me.

And what is the difference between Windows 2000 Server and 2000 Advanced Server?

A:{Advice Offered} - Windows 2000 Professional, 2000 Server, 2000 Anvanced Server--the difference?

Greetings

Win2K Professional is, indeed, just NT Workstation 5.0

The real difference between Win2K Server and Win2K Advanced Server is scalability. To quote a CNET article: "Three versions of the operating system will be available next week (it's an old article): Windows 2000 Professional, aimed at PCs and workstations; Windows 2000 Server, for file-and-print servers; and Windows 2000 Advanced Server, supporting clustering, which is a way of making several systems act as a single, more powerful computer.

To quote the FAQ from www.winmag.com:
Windows 2000 Professional is the workstation edition of Windows 2000. This is basically Windows NT Workstation 5.0, although Win2K Professional of course includes all of the new technologies for Win2K.

Windows 2000 Server/Advanced Server is the server edition of Windows 2000, which is designed to serve small- to mid-sized businesses and workgroups. Server supports up to 4GB of physical RAM and up to 4 processors per computer. Advanced Server supports up to 8GB of RAM and 8 processors per computer.

Windows 2000 Datacenter Server is designed for large businesses and computer clusters. Datacenter supports up to 32 processors per computer and up to 64GB of RAM, as well as built-in clustering and load-balancing features.

Is that what you wanted?

Cheers

when I go through the import process, it imports nothing at all... No error message, just empty folders.

This happens when I import from the local machine OR the server.

Is it possible the file is corrupt? Is there a way of checking?

Has anyone ever have trouble signing a VBA project on Access 2000?
(I'm using Office 2000 premium.)

I've done the following:
1) installed digital signature in Office Tools
2) generated my certificate using Selfcert
3) oened my Access DB and went into the VB editor
4) opened the Tools> menu

Result: No "Digital Signature" selection was available. in the Tools menu

Looked in VB editors in Excel and Word…
"Digital Signature" *was* right there in the "Tools" menu.
Just not in Access.

In Access, went to:
View >Toolbars>Customize…>Commands>Tools
and whaddaya know… There's "Digital Signature" right there!

BUT guess what? I can't drag in onto any tool bar or open menu.

Does anyone know what's going on or has this happened to them?
I looked in Office/Access Q&A forum on the MSDN website and actually found similar posts but the only suggestions were to try the things I've already listed above.

I searched the MS knowledge base but found no pertinent answers. The Office on-line help gives little/no help for digital signatures.

Hard drive error code 2000-0146
Dell Inspiron 1525 computer. Screen goes black after Dell logo is shown. Ran diagnostics available when F12 key pressed when Dell Logo appeared. Two error codes came up during diagnostics. 2000-0142 and 2000-0146 "Self test log shows previous errors" Co-incidentally an email had been received with subject line "I enjoyed you in secret video" Others have had problems after this email, yet I can't find any reference to it on the net. It may only be co-incidence.
I tried booting from the installation disk. Screen showed "files loading" bar then went to the next screen with the green progress bar for a few seconds, then black and soon the hard drive ceased any activity. After a few attempts now the boot from the DVD just grinds away. There is hard drive activity but no progress.

Hello Sir,
Please guide me through the process of changing Administrator Password of Windows 2000 Server (Where SQL 2000 Server is running having Mixed mode Authentication, with blank SA password). I have once changed it from logon screen (by pressing ctrl+alt+del). But after that my SQL server stopped running (I had blank password for SQL). I couldnot fix the error.

Please tell me both the process, to be followed, while changing Windows 2000 Server password, when the SA password of SQL is (1) Blank (2) is not Blank. Please tell me is there any step to be taken in SQL 2000 Server, after changing the password of the Windows 2000 Server Administrastor?

Hi There

This is not a macro question. I have been at this for hours now with no success. I have a picture in MS word 2000. The picture is text with a box around the text. See attached MS Word 2000 file. I want to copy this picture into Excel 2000. But when I do a copy and paste, it does paste into Excel but just the box shows up and not the writing. Can someone out there copy it and paste it for me in Excel 2000 and send it to me?? I can then copy it from your Excel spread sheet into my Excel spread sheet.

Thanks for your help in this.

Mario

When working with a brand new spread sheet w/no links- Example: data is input for columns B-E, then data sum in column F.
When updating the next ROW, there is NO formula in column F, once the data is entered, the blank cell assumes the formula from the previous row.
WE LIKE this feature & want to know:
1. How does it do that?
2. How (& under what circumstances)can I turn this feature on in other columns?

A:{Moved from NT/2000 forum} - Excel 2000 formula assumption

Hi Nora,

When you turn on extended formats and formulas, Microsoft Excel automatically formats new data that you type at the end of a list to match the preceding rows and automatically copies formulas that repeat in every row. To be extended, formats and formulas must appear in at least three of the five list rows preceding the new row.

On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Edit tab.
Do one of the following:
To automatically format new items that you add to the end of a list to match the format of the rest of the list, select the Extend list formats and formulas check box.

To prevent automatic formatting, clear the check box.

Hope this helps.

Whenever I launch Outlook 2000 the Office 2000 installer also launches.

I installed Office 2000 on this machine several months ago, and Outlook has run without any odd behaviour.

It also happens any time I click on a new email.

Although I installed iTunes 2 days ago, today is the first time Outlook has behaved in this way.

I'm running Win XP with SP1, and I've scanned with AVG, Spybot and Ad-Aware, with nothing negative being reproted.

Hiya

Is this showing up as two Win2000 in Windows Explorer? When you ran install off the CDROM, did you say Keep Original Settings and Files? If so, that could be your problem.
Not 100% with this, but if you did the latter, then if you try and reinstall it again, it should come up with that option. Just say No and it should install it on top of the last two.

Failing that, is this an upgrade from Win98, or a full installation?

I would like to know if there was a way to forward messages based on content to a file outside of Outlook 2000, like Access 2000 in particular, maybe even Excel 2000. I know that a rule can be set up to forward messages to personal folders, but I would like to know if it can be done to an outside file. I didn't know if it had to do with messages being in pst format.

A:Forwarding message from Outlook 2000 to Access 2000

No. Not possible to my knowledge or without VBA.

I think it might be easier for you to set Access to import from the PST file at a given time each day. Of course, you'll have to have exited Outlook at that time or the PST file will report that it is in use.

Hi,

I've gotten error messages that have varied between these two errors every time my computer boots up. It runs Auto repair automatically, and I've had a few instances where it has gone to a full scan in BIOS. Each time it scans I get one of these error messages, and when the computer didn't go into BIOS and continued into the screen where I could choose what to do as the operating system couldn't start, it claimed that there were no factory settings that I could return it to to fix the problem. I was simply wondering if this is a problem with my hard drive, and if it could be fixed.

Among other problems (he didn't check w2k's hcl for his monitor), when he tries to access his modem from w2k, it doesn't work...It's coming into COM3, but his w2k doesn't even see COM3 to get to the modem. But when he boots Me, it works fine...

So, is this just as simple as the modem not being supported by w2k, thus it won't recognize the port? Would that cause it? Or is there something else that he needs to do?

W2k seems to be good at detecting deviced during installation, so I'm at a loos as to why it can't see the port or the modem...

Any thoughts?

Please help me someone. I'll try to make this short, but give you all the info. I have a Dell Dimension 4100 running Windows 2000 Professional with Microsoft Office 2000 Prof. My problem started with Microsoft Word freezing after loading. I'm able to load the program and even load a file then word freezes. I have already updated & run these programs in normal and safe mode:
Norton Antivirus; Spybot; Adaware. (No virus and all adware removed).

I've run CWShredder & have Spyware Blaster & Zone Alarm running. I've cleaned out my computer with CCleaner and it does not require defrag at this time.

As far as Microsoft Word goes, it will run in safe mode and sometimes runs when I load it with the a/switch, but has also been freezing up when loaded on a/switch. I have renamed and deleted all NORMAL.DOT files. I have checked start-up folders in Word to remove files, but there were no files to remove. I have changed Word's registry Data key and Option key. I have run detect & repair in normal Word and in a/switch mode. I have run repair from add & remove programs. It still doesn't work. I was preparing to remove & reinstall when I decided to check for office updates. I updated Microsoft Office with suggested updates from Microsoft. I can't tell now what updates I loaded.

Now my problem is my CPU usage stays at a steady 100%. Now I don't know if this happened before or after I updated my computer. I don't want to remove & reinstall ... Read more

I just recently installed exchange server and my outlook 2000 clients are having a problem. Email works fine any everything, however when the user is in a new message, they want to call users from their contacts list.

When they click on the "To..." button to bring up their contacts list, all it displays is the global address lists for exchange server, it doesn't have their personal contacts.

Normally to fix this you'd go to the folder list in outlook, right click and go to properties, outlook address book tab, and select "
show this folder as an email address book".

However when I go do this that option is grayed out. I can't select it.

I thought it was a rights thing, because my users are logged in as domain users, but my administrator account can't change it either.

A:Outlook 2000 and Exchange 2000

Before you try to show the Contacts folder as an address book, go to Tools/Services and add the "Outlook Address Book". When you right-click the contacts folder the checkbox should no longer be grayed out.

I an new to all of this and have been slowly figuring out the things I need but I am stumped on a few issues.

I am revamping a Access 2000 datafile that I got from a friend. I have made all the changes I need in my form but have the following problems. I have an autonumber field on the form. I want to reset the number to an number other than 1 or 0. I also want it to increase it by 1 rather than a random number for each new record. None of the books I have seen discuss how to rest the number to a number that I want to start at.

Also I put a text box in between the autofield label and autofield box. I put a "K-" in this box. I wanted it to be like a prefix for the autonumber when the form is printed. The "K-" is there in design mode but when I switch to form mode, some other characters are in the box. I do not know where they came from. When I switch back to design mode, by "K-" is back in place. How go I fix this.

My Access datafile is set up to print the form. Then I want to go to Word and use the information in the fields to merge into various documents. If I open a document and do one merge, then Word sort of freezes. When I go to open another Word document, the open file screen is set for data files rather than Word "docs" and it will not let me open a regular Word doc. I have to back out of Word, restart it and then I am okay. I heard there was some similar problem in Acess 97. Is this the same problem. How can I fix this?

A:Office 2000:Word 2000

The first thing I would suggest is to get a clean default template. It cures most Word problems and is the easiest to do.

Enable the viewing of hidden and system files.
Do not have Word running.
Search for and delete all occurrences of the "normal.dot" file.
There must be at least one, if you find none, you have not enabled the viewing of hidden and system files.

When you next run Word, a new "normal.dot" file will be created.

A:Microsoft Word 2000 aka MS Word 2000 - Sending Email - Need Help Configuring

Word itself does not send (or receive) e-mail messages. You may configure Word to be your e-mail editor, but it still requires an e-mail program (such as MS Outlook) to send messages.

You can send e-mails from within Word by using File, Send To, Mail Recipient (or Mail Recipient as Attachment), but this still uses Outlook to do the sending and receiving.

Office XP can run on Windows 2000. Even though the operating systems and office suites have the same naming convention, that doesn't mean that they have to match up (Windows 2000-Office 2000, Windows XP-Office XP).

Hi Streaker,

What you want to do is to boot up into Windows 98, and then insert your Windows 2000 CD. It will come up and ask you if you wish to upgrade, and you select yes. As setup is running for Windows 2000, you will have a choice of where you want your installation files installed, and you simply need to pick the partition your old Windows 2000 files were installed in. After the installation finishes, you should then be able to boot back into Windows 2000.

SO I attempted to download and run it manually and it states that the program is not a valid Win32 application....anybody else having this problem?

A:KB890923-Windows 2000-XP-cannot install on Windows 2000

I just checked my win2k sp4 system. It has that hot fix installed. I generally do installs and updates in this order; it gives the fewest problems / issues.

1 Install os
2 Update to sp4 unless your disk already has it
3 Install chipset / mb drivers
4 Update to DirectX9c
5 Install sound, nic, raid drivers as necessary
6 Install video driver
7 Update to IE6 sp1
8 Image the drive in case updates cause problems
9 Now run windows update and install all critical updates.

Now install apps and games

Hi All

Am I right in thinking that they are both pretty similar except that server has support for multiple processors and extra network related tools and facilities. The reason I ask is that if a piece of software works on Windows 2000 server, is it extremely likely that it will work on Windows 2000 professional too? As a bit of background information: I work for a small company which supplies temperature monitoring equipment which needs to be networked. I've been told that it has been tested on Windows 2000 server but not on Window 2000 professional.

Thanks

A:Windows 2000 professional and Windows 2000 server: same?

Yes, the OS are pretty much the same. The server edition supports more than 10 simultaneous connections (for file and print sharing) and supports network stuff as you said. But those differences could potentially break an application depending on what it does and how it interacts with the OS.

I am wondering which OS would be better as far as speed and reliability. I personally think XP is bloated and wastes resources with eye candy. I am running XP pro right now, but have a 2000 disk from an earlier machine. The other machine was only a 1 ghz while this one is a 2 ghz. I'll swear at times I remember my 2000 machine being faster than this one with half the ram and half the processor.
I have gotten into gaming more than when I used 2000. Is 2000 ok for games? I don't want to wipe XP from my machine and find I need to go back. I am not interested in dual booting either.
Just curious, what do you think?

My computer will only allow me to save photos from any newsgroup as a "BMP" file.

It will not allow the file to be saved as a JPG or Gif, or any other type of file. It only gives the option to save, as a bit map file.

How can I correct this?

Any help, would be appreciated.

I used to have DSL, which came with a modem/router combo unit. I switched to cable, and they provided only a simple modem. I've only got 2 computers, and want to setup ICS. Both computers HAD Win2k Pro, until my wife got a Zen Vision:M for Christmas, which is not compatible with Win2k. So, we installed WinXP Pro on her computer, and now ICS will not work. I've been through write-up after write-up looking for help, but I've haven't found any that address doing ICS with 2k AND XP. Both computers have 2 network cards (As, I have tried them both as the host), and I'm using a crossover cable to connect the two. Any ideas?

I'm sure it's something simple that I haven't seen mentioned previously. ATM the XP computer is not connected, as I would LIKE to use the 2kPro computer as the host, as it's seems to be more reliable, and rarely has any trouble, where as the XP computer, at least prior to the upgrade, has some video driver issues, that cause hard freezes sometimes, so when it freezes, and has to be rebooted, the other PC looses connection...

Hi Chemboy,

Before you decide to upgraded have you verified you have the necessary hardware requirements to support Windows 2000 or XP?

hi all..... i going ti ask very basic which i dono the exact answer(not in graphical and appearance )..
wat is the main diff between Win XP and Win 2000

A:XP Vs 2000

HI

Apart from a few basic changes like, Windows XP is more generally more user friendly as compared to Windows 2000 professional like XP offers a number of helpful safety tools like easy login and log off, XP offers enhanced security features like an inbuilt fire wall.
Windows 2000 professional lacks built-in fire wall
Windows XP supports a number of latest software?s and can even sustain a number of newly developed hardware tools and driver support.
Windows XP offer MS Config and system restore which win2k lacks.
Windows 2000 has been categorized as a hybrid kernel operating system.

I hope I am posting this in the right place. Im not sure if this is an operating system issue or a hardware issue. Recently I decided to upgrade my computer and operating system I had the following:
-winnt4.0 workstation
-4gb hdd for a master
-cdrom on the secondary as a master
-64mb 72 pin ram.
-p133 cpu

I have up graded to the following:
-win 2000 professional
-8gb hdd for a master
-4gb hdd for a slave
-cdrom on the secondary as a master
-64mb 72 pin ram. (4 16mb simms)
-1-64mb 168 pin dimm (only showing 16mb) for a total of 80mb ram
-p133 cpu

Now my computer is radomly rebooting itself once or twice a day, I don't know why. Got an Idea's?

A:win 2000

The first thing that jumps out at me is that you have the bare minimum requirements for Windows 2000. However, I have successfully ran it with only 32MB of RAM so maybe that isn't so bad. The one I had was Slow!!!

It may be a hardware conflict. Have you tried running the winnt32.exe /checkupgradeonly? It will check the system for compatibility with Windows 2000. Usually you would do this before installing, but it may clue you to what is the problem.

I have installed it on a 333 computer before and it worked fine for about a month then it crashed. After some research, I found out 2000 did not support some video driver I was using.

You may also want to check out the Setuperr.log(shows the errors that occurred during setup) and the Setupact.log(shows the setup actions in order) for possible hints.
I hope something here helps you.

A friend has had NHL 2000 for awhile. He recently upgraded his computer to Win98, and upgraded video card etc, has plenty of C drive space, lots of RAM etc, infact his computer far exceeds all the requirements listed for the game, yet it will not play. It will start to load, then you can get as far as clicking on iNSTALL and then it goes a little loopy and freezes up. Yet it is not the game as it will work on another computer. I thought it might be the CD ROM drive, but other games will work. ANY ideas? Or any ideas of how we can diagnose the problem?

Thanks!!

A:Nhl 2000

Perhaps you could try one or two of these things.

Make sure that the video card drivers are up to date.
If ness. install the correct ones.

Disable/shutdown all uness. applications, antivirus, etc that loads on starup.

Make sure you are running latest version of direct X

Reinstall game. Make sure all programs and anti virus are turned off before installing.

If this comp is running Win XP try compatability mode.
(R click on the game icon, select "properties"
Click on "compatibility" and choose the mode to run in
win 95, Win 98/me or win2000 also i suggest checking the "disable visual themes" checkbox.)
Hope some of these help.

I'm trying to do a clean install of win 2000 pro on a formatted hard drive and i am not having any luck, can anyone offer suggestions or point me to a web site which has a step by step tutorial.

Here is a step by step guide with screenshots for you.

When I do an install, I like to have all of the drivers, patches, service pack, and any other updates burned to a cdr. This will make your install go easier.

Hi guys!

Today I installed Windows XP Pro onto my computer which was originally Windows 2000 Pro. Everything went well and it all works.

My only problem is when I turn my computer on, it asks me which system I want to use. The choices are 2000 and XP. How do i get rid of that message?

This same thing happened when I upgraded 98 to 2000. I have to edit a .inf or .dll file I think to do it. I can't remember...

Anyone know?

Thanks

A:2000 to XP

You probably left W2K there, so you need to do some clean-up. Getting rid of the message is easy, right click My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Startup & Recovery. Make sure the proper O/S is the default and uncheck the "Display list of O/S to start" box. You most likely have a WINNT directory with tons of stuff in it, as well as left over junk in "Programs Files".

My OEM computer came with all kinds of features: : prefetch, Win 2000, etc. My machine is very much slower than my Win Me. Wonder what I can do to get a decent speed. I use ADSL hi-speed, XP pro, 2.66 GKHz, 40 GB and 80 GB HD, only 512 MB RAM but will increase with another 1 GB. Could I get rid of some items like: Prefetch,
Win 2000, and other you can suggest. Your suggestions appreciated. Thanks.
