Hi,

I have a Dell 4400 running XP. I had a hard drive failure and lost everything. It has taken several days to reload a new drive. What is the best way to back up the entire c drive? Should I buy an exra drive or zip drive. I don't know much about hardware. I just want an easy way to rebuild a drive if my new one fails and of course, not loose all my personal files again.

My computer won't even recognize the original drive. Any suggestions on how I might retrieve some of my lost files? I'm assuming it's a lost cause but I'd like to retrieve my digital picutures if possible.
TIA!

i need to backup my Inspiron laptop as well as my iPad 2. I've narrowed it down to buying the cord. Now I need referrals for backup software. I'd like to backup Windows to my iPad as well as to a flash drive. Then I want to backup my iPad to iTunes on my Windows laptop, then to flash drive.

Which software do you suggest -- free preferably -- to do all this? I've been using Windows since 3.0 but Apple is fairly new. I'd need something fairly simple to use.

Once done, I'll upgrade to a Windows 8. I'm waiting on ten as I've read too many horror stories. That's normal, I know, but I always wait a while

Thank you

I don't know what "buying the cord" means.

I have no idea if you could back up an Inspiron to an iPad. I've never heard of such a thing. Anything is possible.

You ought to think in terms of backing up the Inspiron to a hard drive of some type. Not to an iPad. Not to a flash drive.

I'm assuming you are referring to backing up Windows itself, not just your personal data, pictures, videos, etc.

The standard tool to backup Windows to a hard drive is imaging software such as Macrium Reflect or Aomei Backupper. Both are free.

You can back up to DVDs, but it's foolish and asking for trouble.

If you just want to back up your personal data, rather than your Windows installation, that's another story entirely.

"Backup" is a poorly defined word that means different things to different people at different times. What do you mean when you use it?

I just backed up my drive with 3 partitions with Nero on DVD.
If my Windows XP ever takes a crap again: Will I have reinstall XP and Nero and then restore:? If yes: With or without partitions? Will the restore overwrite the registry so all my programs will work? I am not trying to beat any copy protection here, It just takes me days on days to reinstall all my music studio programs and dink around digging up all the keys and disk's. I have always started from scratch in the past.

Thanks
XtremeX

Your data should be good. I doubt the DVD is bootable though. You would need to reinstall XP, programs, drivers, ect. And then you could copy the data.

You cain't simply back up your system and restore it as files in use cain't be copied and anytime Windows is active there will be files in use.

If what you are looking for is a means to restore your system then you need a image of the drive. Ghost or Drive Image will make a image than can be used to do a restore. They boot to their own system.

FWIW I run a vanilla system with few special drivers. I have my drive partitioned as you do and I load XP and drivers to C, application programs to D and data goes to E. So I just back up data on E. Therefore I don't clone my drive. If I feel the need to reload XP I back up E and reload XP and my programs.

Hi all,

I haven't been here for a while but have swung by because I'm in desperate need of help in deciding down which route to go with regard to backups.

The thing is that there is no sub-forum where this question would be appropriate - so I'll ask it here!

I need to perform a backup on an HP Proliant DL360 server so that in the event of theft / failure / fire etc. I can restore the system and also the files. It's got an 80Gb capacity, and there's constantly about 60GB (mainly of PDFs) on it.

The prime consideration is cost - or the lack of it because the company is very small. Before I arrived someone bought a Sony AIT-1 tape drive (35gb per tape) so I suppose I could use that but I need to be able to backup all the system files while the server is up and then restore them in the event of a failure. I also don't know what backup software is good or even compatible with this drive.

I was wondering if there's a software solution that would enable me to make a complete copy of the server's drive to my PC (over the network) and then simply update that every evening by copying changes over. I've got plenty of space on the PC and then if I needed to restore the server I could just push the data back onto new hardware.

The third way could be to buy a USB hard drive caddy and copy the system to that but I would still have the problem of copying the windows files and also climbing into the server room every time I need a backup and, we,, it's not a very elegan... Read more

Hello,

I have a 5 years old PC with 80gb internal hard drive. I've just bought an external hard drive; Buffalo Drivestation 1tb. My aim is:

1- To boot from Buffalo DriveStation in the event of internal harddrive failure (the hd start making clicking sound). I've just reformat my PC and a one-off 'copy' of how my OS setting is fine, I dont need scheduled backup / 'copy' of my OS in my Buffalo DriveStation. FYI, the OS is in my C: where else files, pictures, songs etc is in different partition.

2- To make scheduled backups files, pictures, songs etc partition to Buffalo DriveStation every fortnight or so.

3- Im planning to partition the Buffalo DriveStation such as below:
a) 10gb --> to make a 'copy' of my current C: drive where my OS is
b) 150gb --> for pictures
c) 300gb --> for videos
d) 50gb --> for files
e) 490gb --> to 'copy' partitions b) to d)

I've been reading Acronis and googled on how to do the above but not sure whether I should go with 'Disk Cloning' or 'Mounting Images' or both to perform Task 1 and Task 3e?

Also, in order to perform partition my Buffalo DriveStation as outlined in Task3 using Partition Magic, do I have to choose the specific task of 'Install Another Operating OS' for Task 3a?

I hope I have explained everything as clearly as possible and appreciate any help.

Thank you

Please let me know any backup software this is free or retail of backup software... i need to collect my college USB work (128 MB) and backup them..

Then im looking for secure backup online... Size about 130MB is okay

Thanks for help.

A:Backup? Sercue Backup Software needed!

I like the free version of Syncback for continous backups, though if you only have 128mb and its basically one time or infrequent why not just copy it to a backup?

Online, 2 gigs or less, I'd recommend Mozy for free secure backup.

I would like your views on how to approach this situation, causing the least amount of disturbance to the network but enabling me to gather as much info as possilbe.

Greetings

My advice: Go in on a weekend and re-install everything

Ok, now onto more practical advice:

Firstly, get a picture of the network. This means getting a floorplan of the buildings, walking around going from room to room, and writing down the number of PCs, the software OS (and service pack level, if applicable) installed, current hardware installed and the router they connect to.

Do the same for your servers. It is vitally important to know what hardware is in each PC, and what the specs of the PC are.

Next, you need to get a Logical map of your network. This is a picture of the IP addresses of the Routers, printers and servers (and workstations, if you are not using DHCP), and where the different subnet's are situated. You need to see what services are installed on your Servers (WINS, DNS, DHCP, IIS, Proxy etc). At this time, it is also a good idea to get a list of the accounts on the Server. You need to see which accounts are being used to run certain services, and make sure that only Service accounts are running those services. Next, you need to take away any user accounts that no longer correspond to people using the system (ie. if Mr Bradshaw last worked at the school 5 years ago, it is time to delete his user account). Ditto with any user home drives assigned to defunct users.

Lastly, you need to compile a list of discepancies. Look at your list created in the forst step, and get an idea of what a standard PC is (ie: Standard PC = at least Pent 200,... Read more

I run Windows 7 on a 2TB hard drive. Once, I thought that hard drive was dying and bought a replacement, but then I found out it was the cable that was dying, and so now I have two hard drives that are 100% identical in storage space. I want to plug the other one back in and let it be a regularly updated backup of the main drive, hopefully as a full-on clone. I'll start by booting into a Linux flash drive and using dd to clone the drive onto the other one, but obviously this process takes too long to become the regular process.

I need suggestions. What's the fastest, most convenient, and most reliable way to maintain the currentness of a cloned 2TB hard drive?

RAID 1. For a software solution, there are multiple options such as Norton Ghost.

Good evening all,

I just recently experienced a terrible issue where I formatted, and backed up everything except for my pictures. I even overwrote them on my iPhone once iTunes connected to it, so this completely got rid of all of the pictures.

Thankfully, I've stopped using Live Mesh approximately 2 months ago and it had 96% of all of the pictures that I forgot to backup ^_^.

The only reason I haven't really been doing backups, although I always advise customers and friends to perform backups periodically, is because of the inconvenience. I do not necessarily like to keep my machine on when I'm not going to be on it, and I'm not too sure of Windows Backup's available options to perform backups conveniently without bogging down resources every x amount of days/hours/time/whatever.

So personally, I like the way dropbox/live mesh works because they sync things as there's a change to the folder that's being synced. However, I am curious to know if any of you have found something similar to this, but works via external hard drive and not over the network. I would like to, for example, sync my pictures, downloads, documents, videos, music, etc, as soon as there's a change to one of the files within the folders.

The instant change would be very convenient for me as I do not have to sit for x amount of hours on certain days waiting for a backup to complete.

The best way to backup important files is to a external HDD also having backups for your backups. Keeping them off sight, manually. If you are not willing to take the time then do not bother backing up your data. IT people spend hours backing up data everyday in severs.

Hi everyone,
I've been viewing these forums for a long time and have just joined to start participating.

I have a fairly new PC as my old one was really slow and had no hard drive space left. I've already got a lot of stuff on it - programs / documents / photos / work stuff and so on and was wondering what the best way to backup would be?

When I transfered from my old computer I backed all of my documents up on DVDs and an external HD which I borrowed. This was fine but it took a long time to re-install all of my programs.

What would you suggest the best way of backing up would be? I've been wondering about getting a 2nd HD and simply doing a scheduled backup to put my main document folder onto it at certain times but I've also been looking at RAID (which I'm not too clear on) which seems to be a more robust solution.

Just interested in hearing what everyone else does to get some ideas really.
Simon

I think getting another hard drive would be a good idea. I have an external hard drive and it doesn't take too long to back my important files. Here's what I do: I have all of my important files and folders in one folder. Periodically, I just back up that folder to my external drive. If you have windows 7, it's really simple to make a system image. I do that about every other day. All you need to do is open Control Panel, then on the left hand side, click on "Back up computer" then select, "Create system image". In a short time you will have the image created.

I have to admit to never doing backups of my system and I recently had corrupt file problems on Windows 10. Never having done them, I'd like advice please on how and when best to do backups.

As I mentioned my system is Windows 10 Pro, I have two 1TB external hard drives that I use for storing images. As well as the SSD drive inside my PC, I also have an internal 1TB hard drive where I again store backed up images.

Any help or advice would be most welcome.

Hi,
I bought a Western Digital "My Book Essential Edition" external drive and it came with a trial Memeo Backup program. The 30 day trial has run out and I don't know whether to buy it or not. Any thoughts? I don't know much about this Memeo Backup? I know nothing about backing up to an external hard drive except that I don't want to loose all the work I put in on data into QuickBooks Pro and Quicken Deluxe. Every year just before tax meeting with CPA something happens and I loose all the data and I have to start over. I also bought it to back up other important files as well. Do I really need this Memeo Backup program? Are there better out there?

I'm not familiar with Memeo software, but I do data backups to both internal and external hard drives.
I experiment from time to time with different apps.
I've used Karen's Replicator for 4 or 5 years with out issues and in the last few months I've been using Syncback also.
Both are easy to configure and work well for me.
I think I favor Syncback, though.....quicker backups and more numerous options laid out in a simple format, imo.
Syncback will also write to a DVD formatted for packet writing.

Karen's is free and Syncback has a free version that I'm currently using.

Windows includes a number of backup tools. Onedrive and to an external hard drive. I've notice some go to Onedrive and others to my external hard drive. Should I use both types of back ups or just one? With earlier PC's everything was backed up to my external hard drive. If I choose to use only my external drive is there a way to change Onedrive settings? Basically , I'm confused. Our PC is for causal home use.

hi, as the title says, I need advice in backing up data.

currently have about 3-5 HDDs (ranging from 30-100GB) + a ton of CDs + a few DVDs (not re-writable ones) containing sporadic backups. I would like to have probably 1 or 3 HDD to hold everything. possible case scenario: 1 HDD dedicated for hubby's stuff (his short movies & mp3 collections are growing like fungus), 1 HDD for the computer in case the computer experienced problems, 1 HDD would be for the 2nd backup for everything?

1TB drive sounds beautiful but I'm pretty much scared to even tried it, because if 1 byte fails, the whole drive fails and I lost every single thing. so, what guys says? what would be good? as far as interface goes, USB would be the best bet because every single computer in the network has it (only this computer has USB 2 though), 2 computers have firewire, and there is one last empty port in the router.

should I continue on using the method I'm using now or should I streamline everything or should I buy a portable external HD like the WD MyBook thing?

happy ~early~ thanksgiving to all who celebrates it

Hi,
Im planning on getting an external drive to backup my internal drive and im wondering what are your suggestions for the best backup/syncing program? I tried mozy i bought it for 2 years and its not working properly for me and the tech support SUCKS so i decided to just get an external drive. Any tips on the best software would be awesome i dont mind paying for software either if its better. What i want is basically like mozys service where i can chose folders or files to backup and when i turn on my external drive it will search and see if any new files or folders have been added to those folders i have selected and back them up for me.

Thanks!

I am a photography student and use an external drive to store all my work and my Lightroom4 catalog, this way I can bring my catalog between college where I can work on the Mac's and home where I work on a laptop with Win Vista. I have bought another external drive where I want to backup the first one on a weekly basis, and store elsewhere in case of theft or fire. I am not very tech savvy though and previous advice to try the free Cobain Backup software doesn't seem to be working for me as it's quite complicated to use (for me anyway). I tried looking for advice on their forum but basically just got told off for not reading the faqs and manual, but I had and just didn't understand the tech jargon. Is there either a free program that's easy to use, or a relatively cheap one, that has good support that will help me out?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I'm not a big fan of Cobian either, I prefer SyncBack Free. It's very easy to setup and use.

Short Story:
I had some problems with adware/viruses etc. recently, and I don't know how to tell if my computer is 100% "cured" or not. It's running much better, and only has the occasional quirk (such as anything to do with Facebook making the whole machine slow down). However, I'm not knowledgeable enough to know if everything is truly OK.

On a related note, I'd like to make a backup of all my pictures and music in the event something does happen (I have about 15 GB all together). The backup program that came with my comuter (NTI Backup NOW! 4) keeps stopping partway through with error messages ("Illegal request"), and I was wondering if anyone has some advice as to a good program/method to use. The only thing I have to backup onto at the moment is a stack of DVD-R's. If I should be posting about that in a different forum, let me know, and I will!

Hello, I'm looking for advice on how to properly back up my operating system and drivers, along with file folders (such as music and photos) that I would be quite unhappy if my system crashed and lost all my work.

Can you help me with a procedure on how to do this, and a program that might recommend to do the file backup for me on a regular basis (to a secondary drive or at least to a thumb drive to store on).

thanks

There are numerous programs which will do what you want. Some free, some pay for. By far, one of he more popular commercial apps is Acronis True Image. Its what I've been using for a number of years. I've also used a relatively new free program called Easeus ToDo Backup Home with no problems.

Using a pen drive for backup is not really a good idea. A secondary or external HDD is the preferred and more reliable media.

You may also want to consider a file syncronization program like Syncback. This would be in addition to the full backup and would update your document backup files daily (or however often you select) thereby minimizing the frequency of updating your full backup.

I encourage you to pursue this. Drives fail. Its not a question of IF, but one of WHEN it will happen.

You may also find there are many opinions on how to configure a backup scheme. Its very individualistic.

Lana

We actually use a CD for our installs. If you use a tape, when you ghost it, you will have to make sure all of the drivers are installed when you boot up off the floppy. I am not sure how many drivers that would encounter, but we add the standard generic cd driver to the floppy and call it in the autoexec. Also on the floppy is DOS 6.22 with format and fdisk.

I am in need of a Windows based backup solution that will keep selected folders and documents on my laptop and desktop, backed up to my Windows Home Server (V1), in addition I want the three synced to each other as well. I'm looking for something that I can schedule to run on it's own, and will provide a report as to what was backed and whether it was successful in the form of an email if possible

Example, I'd like all my laptop docs, music, and photo's backed up to my desktop and synced to each other, so any changes made on either will reflect on both, and also backed up to the server.

Separately I have large DVD folders on the desktop that I'd like to keep backed up and synced to the server only, so any time a new DVD file is added to the desktop it will automatically be backed up to the server.

I'm not looking for a cloud based solution. I wish to keep it all local.

Any suggestions would be appreciated..

Thanks..

A:Need advice on a backup solution

Since you're looking for a folder/file "data" backup solution, I highly recommend NovaBACKUP Professional from NovaStor. It has all of the options you expressed a desire for in a backup/restore, including automatic scheduled backup jobs.

I don't know about its "sync" capability, although it does have COPY capability. This isn't really "sync".

However for "sync" I highly recommend Beyond Compare Standard from Scooter Software. It doesn't have its own built-in scheduling capability but it does have "scripting" (for creation of a batch compare/sync/mirror/copy/update job) which you can then just use standard Windows task scheduling with to set up a regularly scheduled nightly "sync" task for example to accomplish whatever you want to "sync".

Both products are NOT free but are reasonably priced. Both provide free trials (14-days for NovaBackup, and 30-days for Beyond Compare). Beyond Compare also has a slightly more expensive Pro version with some additional functionality but I don't think these additional features would be of any value for your described needs.

Both products have existed for a very long time and have active product and customer support from the vendor.

Let me know if you do try these out and have any questions on how to use them or configure them.

I have been doing a lot of research on building a sufficient back system for my needs, and I have a couple questions and I am looking for some advice from others on how I should proceed.

I first started with the purchase of an external hard drive. Actually, I purchased an external enclosure (thermaktake max 5 active cooling) and placed 1 TB western digital hard drive in it (WD Caviar Green). The reason I put my own external hard drive together was because I read horrible reviews from the standard external hard drives you can pick up from the store, as they crash a lot or just flat our fail after a year or so of use. I also did not want the software that came with the drive and with the external enclosure I can use a eSATA wire which is faster than a USB 2.0

As a casual home user my most important documents are my music, photos, videos (and metadata that goes along with it) and financial documents that I store on my computer - some of which are active excel files that I use daily. Therefore I do not think that a daily system image is required, however, it would be nice to backup all of my files daily (at least new files or one that have been changed). I would think that system image once a week or once a month would suffice.

I have just started using the standard windows backup that comes with windows 7 and it seems to do the job, however, it is lacking some flexibility. I do not mind paying for a good backup program, yet, after reading litera... Read more

Hello folks, I am up and running with Windows 7.
All seems to be alright.
Now I want to Backup my Drivers.

What is the favourite app to use.
I just want to backup the drivers.
I don't want to have to use the backup software to Restore a driver.

Needless to say, I have System Restore points and Acronis backups of full system and data.
I am interested in just the Drivers.
And want to use only tried and tested apps.
Thanks,

Backing up an installed driver is not of much use. You need the installation .exe. If you still have those, you just copy or move the folders to a drive of your choice. What, in fact, are you trying to accomplish?

Even if you were to update any drivers from the makers site ie: for the Realtek or the Nvidia, this is NOT the cause of the system running slowly. It may, if the drivers have a slight enhancement for the Nvidia make RCT (whatever it is - I am not a gamer) play a little smoother OR if by the slighest chance there was a bug in the particular driver you are using stop the crash with that game. However that is extemely unlikely.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_197.45_whql.html
Here is the link for the latest driver for the 7300SE.
CHECK when you get to the link that it has stayed ON THE CORRECT page, if it has not simply select GeForce and series 7 and your Operating System ie: XP presumably 32 bit so that is just XP as against XP 64 bit and then check that the driver offered is for the 7300SE.
Try this driver first, BUT I will be amazed if it solves anything.
Post back, when you have tried the driver.
You may EDIT out all the dxdiag log, it is NOT required, whoever is helping will ask for the info ONLY as it is needed.

I am working on a domain migration, but before for i do this i would like to make sure that both DNS and WINS are working perfectly cross-site. This is the first time i am working in a network that has multi-sites, with multi-domains and the users from each domain log on from the others physical network. My company had bought another company and they are going to be merging the 2 companies into 1 with a new name.

What i am looking for help with is, how DNS and WINS should be setup.

We have 2 sites connected with a MPLS.
At the moment we have 3 domains, Parent/child domains(Site1) and a external trusted domain(Site2).
The parent was setup as a placeholder pretty much and the majority of users are in the child domain.(eventually we will merge the external trusted domain to the Parent domain and move all of the users/computers in the child domain up to the parent.

Now machines and users from the trusted domain have been physically moved to Site1, but are still on the trusted domain. For the most part they work fine, but randomly there are some DNS or WINS issues. I have been banging my head to try and fix these issues but they are intermitten, sometimes an ipconfig /flushdns fixes the issue, sometimes it doesn't, eventually the dns error will fix itself but even that time is random. I have noticed anytime this issue happens if i disable the DNS Client service it will start to resolve properly but eventually the issue comes back. When this happens to one user, other user... I’m strongly considering leaving the company I currently work for and need some advice. When I leave my company I will not be transferring to another company working for the MAN and following other people’s stupid rules. I have noticed over the years that the people making the decisions really don't know anything about IT. Struggling to get clients in the bitter cold when I’m just starting out may be too hard for me since I am more prone to depression in the Winter time, I have developed a six month plan. During the next 6 months, probably until the end of March I want to do the following:

1) Get some certifications which I may need your help with
2) Bank A LOT of money
3) Do my best to prepare for this transition

I must admit I am a little nervous about this, especially since my financee is in school and starting her own business, but I just cannot take this anymore. I don’t sleep well anymore because I am constantly worried about my career and money all the time. I feel trapped in a company that is going nowhere. This place works like a well oiled machine and there is nothing more I can do here. When I first started here, it was a much different story. I've been working here for over 5 years now. Every so often, I get thrown a project, but for the most part, I spend most of my day replacing keyboards, mice, switches, etc., and answering people’s stupid questions about their personal **** such as IPODS and Xboxes. I am just too smart for that. I have so much... Read more

Hi,

I have Immunet installed and it keeps picking up threats in the form of *.tmp files that are appearing all over the place, in different application folders and app data folders.

I tried to use the DDS tool as suggested but i get an error when running it, saying it is not meant to be run in compatibility mode. (I am running Windows 8).  So I used HijackThis instead, please find my log attached.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You

Hi there

I have a HT log from a friend on another forum I use.
I have used cwshredder to get rid of a search/homepage jacking
and have the second HJ log file.

I think I have identified some problems and I would like some further help/advice on how to proceed.

There are a couple of things I am not sure about and my search on google has revealed a possible virus/trojan issue.

If I post the HT log file would someone be kind enough to help me out please.

I am learning how to help people with these annoying hijacks and would welcome some further advice if that is possible.

Hi,

Finally, it is time for me to get a new PC. I will build it myself. But I have no idea what to get...
I need a PC for video editing and rendering (preferably HD), MS Office, Adobe Photoshop/Premiere Elements v7, and surfing the web (firefox). I also like to overclock.
I would like the PC to have at least 500GB storage (WD), preferably 4GB RAM, and I'd like the PC to be cool and quiet.
I would like the price to be as low as possible (less than $600?). [For simplicity, the prices should be in USD. I will search for the products myself. In Israel, some components aren't available.] I do not game on my PC. Any ideas? Thanks in advance! A:New PC - advice needed Does that ~$600 USD budget need to include a monitor and an OS?

Hi to all of you

I have been reading your excellent site for a while and have learned a lot of stuff.

I have a couple of questions for starters.

I have purchased an Olympus C 300 digital camera and need a few accessories.

Firstly the Smart card is only a 16mb one..I went to Dixons and asked for the upgrades..they quoted £39 for a 64mb card and £70 for a 128mb card. I have looked in a PC mag and have seen these much cheaper. My question is are they made for each brand as all I see in the adverts are the card without it stating any particular brand. I would like a 128mb card ideally but would do with the 64mb card if I have to pay Dixons prices.

Second question is storage. My idea is to save all pictures to a master folder...hopefully on a disc separate from the hard drive..a CDwriter is my next purchase. At the moment I am storing the originals in a folder..if I then use MGI photosuite I can make a thumbnail record of each set of pictures for easy access. If I then transfer the files to disc I presume the filepath will be broken and my thumnails won't expand on MGI as they won't be able to locate the folders on disc. I presume I would be better of creating the thumbnail albums when my originals are saved to disc so that the filepath will be correct.

Is this the best way of keeping photos?...a set of originals ..and then when I enhance any of them save them again as another filename so keeping the originals untouched.

I have been using the default HQ setting... Read more

Hi there, I was not sure which forum to post this to, so please bear with me. First of all what I am trying to achieve: a stable, secure and fast system with easy access to data for HD recording and backup purposes.
What I have already: an Acer Aspire 5920 laptop with good specs running Windows Vista x64 Bit, and the necessary outboard gear for mixing etc, several ATA HD drives with a couple of external drive enclosures for the USB2 ports.
Problem: despite working relatively well with my aging Medion desktop PC running Win XP Pro SP2, these disks are not always recognized by my Acer Aspire laptop. I have been told that this is due to the disk capacity being greater than that allowed for external USB2 HD enclosures. This makes some sense, since the size of HDs has been increasing at great speed, so possible the firmware cannot keep up with such specification changes.
However this makes it very difficult for me to make backups of my system; presently I can only achieve this by physically transferring my laptop HD to a SATA external USB2 enclosure, connecting this to my Medion PC and imaging or cloning the HD to another HD drive. Clearly this is ridiculous, even if it does work (invalidates my warranty too, if Acer find out).
Thus I have been spending considerable time over the past week or so reading up on my options, but now I am really confused, because first of all where I live in Spain there is really very little in the way of eSATA, SATAII or anything that technological... Read more

If you have a network set up,you might consider connecting an external
networked drive to your PC and run your backups accross the network.
That way you can just leave the drive connected to the PC.

hello all,

i would greatly appreciate if anyone can help me try & sort out the problems i am experiencing with my computer.i do have basic knowledge of computers but whats happened is that i recently bought & installed the avg 8.5 internet security software and when installed i found that my computer had slowed right down despite avg claiming this wouldnt happen .

anyway i then uninstalled avg and all seemed fine again but i have since found that the add/remove programmes menu within the control panel doesnt load up. in addition ,i have also found that when im not connected to the internet. my mouse operates fully & the delete button on my keyboard works fine but when im connected to aol or browsing, the right click side of my mouse doesnt work and neither does the delete button on my keyboard and so i cannot copy and paste / delete etc to which is rather strange & indeed annoying.

therefore im quite baffled by what has happened here so any help would be greatly appreciated. my pc is the fugitsu scaleo 600 with win xp sp3 installed. my isp is aol.

thankyou for taking the time to read this

Try this.

To try to fix this issue, follow these steps:

1. Click Start > Run.

2. Type regsvr32 appwiz.cpl and click OK.

3. Click OK on the dialog box that appears.

When i do a virus scan, i get the message "C\windows\installer\6c7411.msi - The file is signed with a broken digital signature, issued by: Sun Microsystems". It doesnt say that this is a virus, it just shows up as something that was found. Any info on something that shows up like this will be appreciated....what should i do with this file?
thanks .... Herbie

A signature verifies that the package is made by a known vendor. If it is broken, then somebody could have modified the package without authorization from the vendor. I would just delete it.

Need advice. Long story, but point I am at: New CD rom intstalled by a computer shop. I had bought the drive, previously, but never installed, bought new PC. Got the old PC going and CD drawer does not open, no lights etc. Thought maybe driver not installed, so went that whole route. Formatted C, started from scratch, can not restore Win 3.11 as can not use a CD, had 3.0 on floppy. Have checked power cable, OK. Drawer looks jammed, called computer shop that installed, by the way, they never put screws back when putting cover back on, told me drawer should open and it did and was all set when it left their shop. Told me to bring PC back, but will have to pay a $47. diagnostic fee up front, before they will look at it. Contacted drive manuf. and they tell me to take it back and make him check it as it sounds as if it is mechaniclly broken. If I am going to pay$47 for him to diagnose this, then have to buy a new drive and pay to install, would I not be better off, buying a new CD drive on my own and installing. I have done some upgrading on that PC as well as my newer one in the past. I only paid $24 for the drive, it was on sale and got a$20. rebate at the time. Warranty would not be in effect, as drive was purchased a good two years ago, although I never opened or removed from package.
I really don't think I have any recourse with the computer
shop. I am giving the computer to a granddaughter and really do not want to put any great amount of money into this old machine... Read more

Firstly, I sincerely apologize for asking yet another question that has probably been asked a million times before. How do I overclock?

I recently became the proud owner of a sturdy E8400 and Asus P5Q Pro P45 motherboard. I also bought GeIL 4GB PC2-6400C4 800Mhz Black Dragon RAM to cover my Crysis RAM needs.

Now, I tried. I really, really did. I came to the sad conclusion that I'm clearly too thick to do this on my own without help. I've read manuals, tutorials, how-to's, tried watching videos on Youtube etc. Sadly, I just cannot get my head aroud this overclocking business. I'm capable to understand that by raising the FSB, my CPU speeds will increase, got that. The moment I start hearing about Vcores, RAM timings, Vdimm, my brain becomes foggy and the letters on the screen seem to turn into ancient Greek language.

This is my experience so far. I've managed to get into the BIOS after 20 or so tries. Once confronted with the BIOS, I almost ran away. Page after page of settings, one more foreign than the next. By some miracle, I've managed to luck into finding the FSB value and upped that. It was a magical moment for me when I fired up CPU-Z and realised I've managed to increase my CPU to 3.2Ghz. You would not believe the joy I felt. I walked around with a goofy grin for hours afterwards.

I'm now told that my CPU can even go higher than the 3.2ghz it's currently at. I'm using aftermarket air cooling, my current CPU temps ar... Read more

While RAM is a major part of OCing, messing around with RAM without knowing what you're doing can easily kill it. So let's leave that part out for now.

As for the RAM:FSB ratio, theoretically, if your RAM's frequency is equal to your CPU's FSB, then you have the ideal conditions where a bottleneck does not exist. However, this is an irrelevant issue due to the CPU's cache being used for most operations. Don't bother with it either IMO.

Now you're left with the most relevant and important part of OCing: the CPU. As a rule of thumb, increase the FSB in 10-15MHz increments and reboot, then run a test like Prime95's Torture Test for around 20 minutes to see if the system is stable. Then reboot and repeat the cycle again. Be sure to keep a paper and pencil handy to note down each successful FSB value. There'll eventually be a point where the machine will be unstable, or may not even boot. Don't fret if the latter happens though, just power it down, remove the power plug, ground yourself by touching the chassis and then remove the CMOS battery from the motherboard for a minute or two. Then put it back in and the PC should fire up fine. After doing that, just enter the last stable setting you've (hopefully) written down and enjoy your OC!

To take the above a step further, when your CPU becomes unstable, increase the Vcore (shown as a CPU Voltage setting under the AI Tweaker in the motherboard's BIOS. If you don't fi... Read more

Hi,
I presently use 98se and because it is not supported anymore there are some times when I would rather have XP. A friend of mine gave me XP Pro [in the wrapper] that comes only with a new PC. Yes, the certificate of authenticity label is attached. I know that a clean install of XP is recommended by the experts here and to reformat my hard drive prior to the install but that also means that all my drivers and such for 98 will be deleted. I bring this up because if I try to install XP Pro will it have the drivers that I need to operate my PC? I ran MS software to check out the compatability on the PC and here it is:

Hello

I'm having a problem with Microsoft Vista.

All day yesterday I was on my computer fine. I went to bed and hopped on this morning and noticed that whatever I do (clicking browser button, pressing start button) practically anything, Vista freezes and I'm forced to manual reboot.

I did some research on the web but can't find anything that works. I went into safe mode, ran scans from AVG and Malwarebytes and they were both clean. I also went to msconfig and unchecked everything except Microsoft related files on startup but I still get the same problem.

The promblem is the freezing can happen whenever, it could be 10 seconds or 10 minutes, but this problem has only started today, and I've never seen this before!

Does anyone have any ideas why this happened overnight?

Thanks all!

-Wormtail

Please go to Start and type in "msinfo32.exe" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Save the report as an .nfo file, then zip up the .nfo file and upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.

This may give us some clues as to what is happening.

Also, you can monitor the system for excessive resource consumption. To do this, open up Task Manager by right clicking on the Task Bar.
Then select the Processes tab.
Then select the "Show processes from all users" button (in the lower left)
Then select the View menu item, then select "Select columns"
In the Select columns window, place checkmarks next to I/O Reads and I/O Other.
Click OK to accept the changes.
Resize the Task Manager window so you can see the most of the columns.
Wait for the system to freeze.
Look at the columns to see if there's anything that looks excessively high - if so, let us know the Image name of the process. FWIW - System Idle Process is supposed to have high CPU readings - anything else with high CPU readings is an issue.

Thanks,

River

I'd recommend a good anti virus program since a lot of virus's come from email attatchments and web sites a firewall may not catch. Spyware and adware programs are always good to have. Good Luck

Hello all!

Hopefully 2004 will be a great year for computers! This is my scenario. Previously had an XP and 98 PC networked. Bought a new XP tower for Christmas to replace the 98. Hooked up and the XP new crashed. While attempting to install my Antivirus software, picked up a virus... Sent back, just received today and found out there were hardware probs, and the RAM was replaced.
Tonight I plan to hook up again. In the interim I have purchased a DLink DI604 router (paranoid now!). What I need advice on is:

What should I do first? Attempt to network the two? or install the router, on the existing XP PC? then hook up the new XP?

Due to the problems experienced on the first attempt, I do not want to do the wrong thing, and would like to do this right the first time!

Thank you
Cowgirl

So a buddy of mine d/l a prog. from what he thought was a reliable source. Turns out he was wrong

When he opened the file he recieved the message "F#*k you and everybody else!" Not what he was expecting obviously. So now his administrative powers have been taken away from him, he cannot access his ctrl panel. When he opens windows he cannot close them because he does not have the proper admin rights. To top it all off there is a series of question marks(???????) beside the time and date on his task bar.

We did a hijackthis and these appeared

O7 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System, DisableRegedit=1

Hello, I am trying to clean my grandmother's computer for her. I have installed and run several program like AVG Free, Spybot S&D and Adaware however, the computer is still extremely slow if I start in in anything other than Diagnostic Start-up or a very restricted Selective start up.

It also seems to get a lot of "Virtual Memory Low" error messages and often just completely freezes.

Please forgive me but I am going to post both the hijackthis log as well as the startuplist txt file it generated. I'm not sure if you need both but will post them just in case.

I appreciate any help and advice on what to clean up in order to get her computer back to a decent state. I am also open to any suggestions for good programs to keep on here if the ones list above (ie. AVG, Spybot, etc.) should be replaced with something else.

Hi all,

Whilst looking around for a reason and possible cure for the slowing down of my computer,ie: Very slow boot and also takes ages sometimes for websites to load from desktop icons.
I do the regular disk clean and defrag. but its getting very frustrating just waiting for pages to load.
Anyway as I say, while looking around I came across PC Pitstop Optimiser at a price of \$30 which says it will clean up my computer of any nasties and also improve performance.

My question being,"Is it worth it,or just a waste of money, and is there another way of curing my problems ?.

I am fairly new and not very computer literate,so any answers will have to be put in very simple terms.
Thanks,

Vern.

My brother has promised to give me his 60gb Intel SSD when he upgrades his system soon. I've got a Corsair SSD for my OS/boot drive now and two mechanical drives for games, pagefile and a few small apps.

Should I use the 60gb SSD for SSD caching to speed up my games/pagefile mechanical drive? How much of a performance boost would I be getting with a 60gb SSD for caching?

Would it be better if I just put pagefile and a few small apps there? Will pagefile activity wear out the SSD too quickly? (I should point out that I plan to get more RAM soon so I can put pagefile on a RAM disk, so the second option just might be a temporary setup.)

Could you guys maybe suggest other options as to how I could make best use of the extra SSD on my machine?

I know this does not answer your question but you may find it interesting.

If you have plenty of RAM to run all your applications, you wouldn't really need a pagefile. Pagefiles are needed when the system requires more memory than physically in the machine.

I have 8GB memory and rarely see 3GB usage. Several years ago I ran Windows XP without a pagefile on 512MB memory for a long time. One day I actually ran out of memory and the system crashed. Ever since this day I have set a small pagefile just to prevent a system crash. I currently have a 1GB pagefile to assist my 8GB of physical memory if ever needed.

With all this said, I'm not sure how much a pagefile is even used on a system that does not run out of physical memory. If the pagefile is never used then the write cycles for SSD will not be effected. I'm also interested in knowing pagefile usage statistics for a system that has plenty of physical memory.

Hi guys. My IE was hijacked last night by search-area.com.
I tried various methods to remove it, many of which are already listed previously. I manually altered the HKCU keys, but no luck.

I found out that search-area.com is registered to a company called directi. I also have the details of their hosting company.
I emailed directi and asked for help. I haven't received a reply yet. I am contemplating contacting their service provider under their abuse department.

Good idea? Anyone got any comment?

As I only ever use MSN Messenger my son told me how to remove Windows messenger by unticking the box in the "Add/Remove Windows Components". Unfortunately I made a pigs ear of it by doing exactly the opposite ie I unticked all the other boxes and left the Windows Messenger one ticked I clicked apply and ok and imediately realised my mistake.

I went back and reversed what I had done but since then I worry that I may not have reticked all the boxes I should have. I have XP Home edition SP1 upgraded to SP2 and kept up to date via automatic updates installed on my PC. Can anyone tell me what should be ticked and what not.

Hello,
I was directed to your site by a friend after having problems with popups and
the likes. I am running windows xp.
I have run spybot [email protected] as well as adaware both of which are coming up clean now, resulting in getting rid of the annoying popups I was experiencing before running these programs and cleaning out the problems they found and deleted.

If you could please look at the HJT log generated after cleaning up with the above mentioned programs , and let me know what else I need to do to recover I would soooo appreciate it !

I was cleaning out my computer today of dust and removed my fan from my CPU in order to clean it well. Since I have put it back on, I keep getting the overheating signal from my CPU when it is under a load. My BIOS has the warning sound set at 80C right now. When I go into the BIOS, I can watch the temp rise and fall depending on the load.

What I need to know is, what the little glob of sticky grey stuff does that sits between my CPU and my fan? I figure that I need more of it now that I took the two apart but don't know what it is called or how much of it to use. The amount used when I first built the computer was just what was provided with the CPU and those directions were followed.

I have read a few posts here that indicate that I should buy something that I then spread over the entire CPU and I wanted to know if that is accurate. What does that goop really do?

That gloop as you call it is known as thermal compound, and if you have completely removed your heatsink from the cpu then you should really clean off the old compound and add new. To clean it of the heatsink and/or cpu you should use a NON-acetone based cleaning solution and a cotton wool bud.when it comes to adding new compound then you should place a small ammount in the centre of the cpu (how much depends on what cpu your using) but this ammount should when compressed between cpu and heatsink be enough to cover the chip only and not the pcb that its on. When replacing the heatsink make sure that it is on correctly as an improper contact will cause a overheating problem. this is what the thermal compound is for to make sure that you have a full contact between cpu and heatsink therefore making heat dissipation through the heatsink possible, ie:- better compound=better contact=better heat dissipation=better cooling=more efficient cpu

Hi

Apologies if this is posted int he wrong area but i am running windows XP Home so I'm sort of in the right area??

What I would like to do is wipe EVERYTHING off my hard drive - basically my kids pc that is full to the brim of stuff they don't want I could go through it programme by programme to get rid of everything but I wondered if there was something i could download that would do the job for me? I don't want to reformat the hard drive as I no longer have the windows disk that came with the pc.
I'm sure I've raised a few eyebrows with this request.

Hello everyone!

Firstly I apologise if this is the wrong section and also for its lengthy content!!

Basically whats happening is my brother handed me his laptop and said it was struggling to do anything due to virus/error pop ups and warnings on the desktop as soon as he logged on to windows.

Right enough when I booted up it seemed pretty sick so I ended up saving what documents I could then went ahead with a system restore. Next I installed avast, malwarebytes and spyBHOremover, ran them and found alot of unwanted nonsense.

Im more than happy now that Ive got the laptop working again as I have quarantined everything and I ran a second scan and found 0 infected files. Also the laptop was running fine and again when I checked a day later -with no errors whatsoever and nothing untoward happening.

So after all that my question is should I leave the infected avast/malwarebytes files in quarantine, hand the laptop back and if after a week or so the laptop is still running fine, I can assume the quarantined files are safe to remove completely and are not false prophets? ie saying they are infected when they arent and are actually important files.

Thank you in advance and I apologise again if this is in the wrong section or if it sounds daft, I just want to be sure.

I'm having some issues that I would like to get some advice.  We have a laptop computer that we have been using for about a year and usually use Chrome as our browser.  All of a sudden Chrome got really slow so I ran Super Anti Spyware and it found some tracking cookies that it deleted.  I then went to update Malwarebytes and the update failed.  I tried restarting the computer and even doing it in safe mode. So instead of messing with it I reformatted the laptop back to factory defaults on Windows 8.  I upgraded to windows 8.1 and applied all of the updates and installed Avast as my AV.  I put Chrome back on my computer and it is still running horribly slow.  It takes about 15-20 seconds to launch and bring something up on the screen.  I installed Firefox and it is much faster, but as I add my add-ons (adblock plus, WOT, trafficlight, and lastpass) it is getting slow too.  I installed Malwarebytes again and ran a scan and it found nothing.

Last night we got the email from the credit card company that our credit card got hacked at 2:30 in the morning. I don't think the incidences are connected, but I'm starting to get concerned. Is there anyway to check to make sure the lag I'm seeing in Chrome and Firefox (to a much lesser extent) are not connected? I'm wondering if I need to take all of my computers off of the network and rebuild them,  In additon I would resett the network back to its default and setup a new ISID and ... Read more

Hi Scott Is it possible for you to list us your computer specs? Maybe publish a Speccy snapshot if you know how (otherwise I can give you the instructions). Also, do you mean a new "SSID"? To reset your network back to default, you would simply have to reset your modem, router or modem/router, whatever you are using and then set it back up.

Thanks

If the laptop supports multi monitor setup it should work, you could play something, e. g. a movie, on one screen (tv) and on the other (laptop) you could still do something else like web browsing. Just connect the tv to the laptop, go to display settings and try to set it up as two monitors.

Hi All

This query relates to porn or porn-related material appearing on my PC.

I am aware of pop-up adverts and the like and how these sites manage to get themselves to appear as your home-page or as a link that 'magically' appeared within your favorites folder i.e. that you never put there...!! however, I have noticed something strange and that I haven't noticed before that I'm wondering if there's a way that programmers can make this happen.

A series of words have appeared in the 'search box' of my google home page. i.e. when you type the first few letters of a word in google, the previous or history of searched words or phrases matching the letters you entered appears. I don't like the words that appeared in my google search box when I pressed a certain letter.

I had never previously entered these words as a search phrase in google or any other browser for that matter and I'm wondering if there's a way that this could have been placed there via a pop-up or something else sinister in nature.

Can anyone advise please, I don't want this stuff on my PC at all...

I currently have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, Windows Security Essentials, SUPERantispyware and Hitman Pro all installed. Is this too many and is there any better alternatives out there?

Thanks

ritchie

Choosing a security toolkit with anti-virus, firewall and anti-malware programs is a matter of personal preference, your needs, your technical ability and experience, features offered, user friendliness, ease of updating (and upgrading to new program release), ease of installation/removal, available technical support from the vendor and price. Other factors to consider include detection rates and methods, scanning engine effectiveness, how often virus definitions are updated, the amount of resources the program utilizes, how it may affect system performance and what will work best for your system. A particular anti-virus that works well for one person may not work as well for another. You may need to experiment and find the one most suitable for your use and your system. There is no universal "one size fits all" solution that works for everyone and there is no best anti-virus. For more specific information to consider, please read Choosing Your Anti-virus Software and How to choose a firewall. No single product is 100% foolproof and can prevent, detect and remove all threats at any given time. Just because one anti-virus detected threats that another missed, does not mean its more effective. The security community is in a constant state of change as new infections appear. Security vendors use different scanning engines and different detection methods such as heuristic analysis or behavioral analysis which can account for discrepancies in scanning outcomes. The advice you got on the other post was the best you could get.

I currently back my pc nighly up to a spare 320GB internal HD on my wifes PC that are connected via gigabit ethernet cards through a LAN and Netgear WDR3800 gigabit router. This works fine except that my photo album is so large I am running out of room on the backup drive. I am told by Dell I do not have a spare SATA slot on my own pc to put in an additional HD for backup (I already have 3 drives, 2 in RAID and 3rd for my photos). Every month I backup to an external drive I store offsite. Could I get some advice on what I see as my 3 options and suggestions on good hardware as reviews seem to be quite patchy.

1. Replace the HD in my wife's Dell PC with something bigger. I believe it is just a standard SATA connection
2. Buy a large external drive to connect permantently to my own pc by USB2.0
3. Buy a NAS storage device to attach to the Netgear Router

I'm guessing option 3 is the best compromise between speed (gigabit ethernet) and flexibilty (portable and can be used by any pc on the network) However reviews of seagate and Western Digital NAS drives other than just basic ones are pretty poor.

Mike

If it were me I would go for #1. Secure, simple, and reliable.
But I would be fine with an external drive too (as long as it is powered by it's own adapter!) - but the transfer speed is going to be slower at USB2 than ethernet at gigabit.

Better yet, build your wife a new PC with lots of hard drive bays and ports and SATA 3. As a bonus you might get some snoogie points!

Hi all, can anyone help. I want to do a complete copy of my internal hard drive on my pc and create a schedule to back up any files etc that have been changed. I dont know whether to use an external hard drive, software or an online back up system.

I use many images created in Paint shop pro/adobe cs2/word etc... every day & these are my business & if lost them it would be devastating. I'm not tech minded so thought if had a crash I could have a complete back up of everything on my hard drive including all stuff on my desktop like firefox & bookmarks etc...as well as the important images etc..

Can I use an external hard drive & set up an automatic backup/copy when I turn my PC off at night or can anyone suggest another more logical way?

Is Acronis true image 9 the way to go? If I have a crash/hdd mechanical failure will I still be able to use this acronis copy? How can I acess it if I have a virus/ failure? This is probably such a stupid question but I dont know it.

Hope this is the right place/forum to ask but I know you lot are the right people to help.

Thanks all

Mike

I'm not sure which forum this belongs, so I'm trying my luck here, since it concerns backing up my present files for transition to new Dell tower (plus Win-XP) which I just purchased.

My present Compaq Presario 5151 Win '98 has a zip drive, and this week Dell is shipping me an external zip drive. I backed up files onto my zip disk, though I'm not sure those are the correct files to backup.

So I decided to attach a screenshot in the hope that someone here can advise me whether I backed up the correct files for transition to the new system.

Also, I want to get the new system connected in order to make sure that everything I need is on there (for example, I want to be sure the Dell system recognizes my WordPad-formatted documents) before reformatting my old Compaq hard drive.

So is there a way to get:

(1) the old system backed up to new system
(2) the new system up & running to check everything was backed up OK
(3) disconnect the new system and then reconnect the old system in order to reformat the old hard drive so that it's blank
(4) reconnect the new system

Without major hassle? What the usual procedure for this?

Can anyone give me step by step instructions on how to schedule an automated backup to a tape drive on a NT server? Is it possible to backup a drive from another computer on the network to that tape drive?

If anyone could me, I would really appreciate it. Thank you

A:{Advice Offered} - Need help automating backup in NT!!!

Greetings

What software are you using to do the backup?

If it is the default backup program that comes with NT, please reconsider. It is a useless piece of software. Rather, look into getting a decent backup solution, like Backup Exec ( www.veritas.com ), or ArcServeIT ( www.cai.com/arcserveit ).

Both these programs, and others similar, come with their own scheduling services, and abilities to backup computers on your network.

Cheers

Yet again, I've reached a point where I'm sure one of more of my HDD's is on the last days of its life, just now I got a warning message I've never seen before, which told me that one of my HDD's had reported a failure (must be the SMART, but I've had atleast 2 HDD's die prematurely before without ANY warning). The weirdest thing is that the HDD reporting the failure was the one which I was sure WASN'T failing. I came to this conclusion after going through a process of elimination by booting the PC with or without certain HDD's connected and listening for the dreaded buzzing/whirring/clicking/robotic noises for a few hours under different situations (running programs, idling, stress etc).

So now I really need a QUICK and EASY/SIMPLE way of updating my huge archive of backups in a non-confusing way. I have a music folder with easily over 500 tracks, a pictures folder with literally 1000's of pictures and many other extremely huge folders like this which are growing over time. To simply overwrite each entire folder would likely take over 7 hours (we're talking 50+GB's of data, much of which will already BE in my backups), so I need to find a way of ONLY backing up what NEEDS backing up, that way I can shave about 5 hours off the file copy time. The checking criteria can't just be as simple as "same name means no overwrite", it must check the data included in the file with the same name because many of m... Read more

For any of the folders containing compressible data (Photoshop projects, Ableton projects, raw audio, save files etc) I've zipped them into RARs (saving huge amounts of space) and I update those archives using "add & update" which I assume/hope checks more than just the name of a file when it decides what gets added/updated. I just need a way to do this the contents of standard file folders now.

I just got the warning again, less than 15 mins later, I haven't heard one single clicking/buzzing sound, nothing mechanical at all...

I use my computer at least a dozen hours a day as I am not well and over the years I have customised it to be just as I like it as well as collected numerous pics, altered the look of Windows (Personalisation), installed programs and so on.

I am absolutely fraught that one day my lovely PC will expire and I have no idea about how to go about keeping a record of it with the idea of being able to put it all back on a new computer.

So far I have tried ....
~ Backups from the computer itself on to a memory stick but fail every time as it refuses to format any of the 8G B memory sticks I have tried. The backup that I get to from the control panel starts off well but gives up at about 28% telling me there is not enough room on the stick. I followed online instructions to remove Write Protect but the value was already at 0 and now backup section in Control Panel/Backup Settings won't even recognise there is a stick (Drive I) plugged in.
~ I tried to make a System Image but not even the repair shop could manage to make one when I took my computer to them to try to get them to do it for me.
~ I have tried to explore backup programs but the cost seems a lot when I can't seem to figure out if they will do what I want.
~ I thought of an external hard drive but, again, I don't know if it will do the job I ask of it.
I don't even know if any of these would or could actually put everything on to a new PC if/when this one gives up the ghost?

Could some kind person explain to me if I a... Read more

Imaging with free Macrium

You need "imaging".

Consult the above tutorial for how.

Macrium is free.

Windows itself has imaging capability, but it's shaky and not the best tool.

Briefly, you would:

1: install Macrium
2; make an "image file" of one or more partitions on your current hard drive.
3: save that image file on some totally different drive--possibly an external.
4: make a bootable "restore" disc within Macrium
5: confirm that the restore disk will in fact boot your PC.
6: if your PC fails, you would then boot from the restore disk and "restore" the image file you made in step 2 to a new drive.

You'll no doubt have a million questions. Read the tutorial, make notes, and ask about what you don't understand.

It is NOT infallible. It may fail. You need to have a plan B, which is typically to reinstall everything from the ground up---which is precisely what you don't want to do but may have to if image restoration fails.

If you know what you are doing, the success rate is probably 98 or 99 percent. If you don't and can't or won't learn, the success rate is near zero.

Hi all,

I need to reinstall the OS on a DELL Poweredge 1400 Windows XP Professional.
I got a spare OS disk from my cousin. It is a Windows XP Professional disk, so it should work, right?

Can anyone tell me if I will need to backup the drivers on the computer? If so, what should I use to do it?
