Problem with my games games Crashing

Q: Problem with my games games Crashing

Ok guys I'm new to the site, I've been having lots of problems with my new computer and a friend said you guys might be able to help me.

Well I just bought a new Computer a clone made by a local computer store.
It's spects are
Windows Xp Home SP2
Pentium 4 2.8ghz
512 mb ram
Ati Radeon 9800 pro 128 With Catalyst 4.9
Creative Sound blaster live!
Intel Desktop Board D865glc which supports Hyper Threading
dvd rewriter gsa-4082b by LG

Anyways here is my problems
I went out and bought Sims 2, Nhl 2005, and Madden 2005 and I'm having problems with every one

with sims 2 the gameplay is not extremely smooth, but I find no matter what I always end up getting a crash message reading "This Application has crashed, this process will be terminated" i get it either in the first 5 minutes or through 2 hours, but everytime I play it usually crashes.

ok with Nhl 2005 the game plays great on the highest resolution, but sometimes just for kicks i get booted to windows without and messages...or sometimes it even reboots my system again with no message. Most of the time when this happends is when I'm exiting a game to the menu screen. Like I find when I transist from game to menu it like changes the screen and I can see my background for a bit.

With madden the game just runs very slow, even on low resolutions with everything turned down. The textures on teh white jerseys look flickery and the field lines are also jumpy.

Now I brought my computer back to the store and they don't see anything wrong with the system itself they say it's the games....I don't know what to think anymore

Also is it normal for a computer to take like 2 minutes once in windows screen before you can open or access any applications?
Like my old computer never took this long to load everything up.

Now i've tried reformatting and resintalling the games and the drivers and still these problems remain?

What do you guys think?

Sorry for the length

Since i bought this rig a year ago i haven't been able to play any games that runs on the valve engine(half life 2, css, portal etc) more than a few seconds and then the comp reboots.
With Bf2 i can play max 30 minutes and Bf2142 maybe one hour then they crash exactly the same way as Valve games..
All other games i have tried runs without any problem, even the more demanding such as Crysis, Far Cry 2 and Dark Athena.
This is really anoying since the only game i bother about is BF and CSS.

My comp consist of:

cpu: q6600
gfx: 8800 gt 512mb Point of View
mobo: gigabyte ga-n650sli-ds4
ram: 4gb(2x1gb supertalent02 ddr2 pc2-8900u & 2x1gb dimm ddr2 pc26400u)
psu: 570 watt

Cpu temp is at full load 60c and gpu is at full load 70c, i added an extra fan to the gfx and set the fan to 80%. nothing is overclocked.
I tried with diffrent memorys, changed hdds, reinstalled a bunch of times, reinstalled windows xp 32bit, maybe 10 diffrent nvidia drives, also changed settings for the sound card but none of that made any diffrence.
Havent been able to test with other gfx.

Anyone else hade this issue and manage to solve it then please let me know, also greatful for all suggestions.

Hi there, i've got a fairly big problem, i don't know what happens or what is causing this but every now and again when i try to play ANY games at all they all crash on me when trying to open them, every single game i have bar the windows default games, they work, but that's no good lol

I say every so often because it happens just randomly and i haven't got a clue what triggers this, a restart sorts it though but it's a pain having to restart all the time obviously. Anyone have any ideas please??

put it in quotes as i started the same thread a while back but my problem sadly isn't sorted, here's the original thread (that's now closed):

it's still been the same since then and i thought it was sorted but obviously isn't.

I think i've come to the conclusion it's probably something to do with the PSU but i really don't see how as i bought a brand new one recommended by a user here (

Maybe it's not installed correctly or is incompatible idk, any ideas please?

I'm another one of those video gamers out there and every real game i play is crashing. The games include:
1. Simpsons Hit and Run - I just get windows send report message.
2. Halo: Combat Evolved - Minimizes and says "Gathering Exception Data," then the send report message. I looked at all help for this, still unanswered
3. Battlefield 1942 - Just quits to desktop
4. Battlefield Vietnam - Also quits to desktop
These are the only games i have really played. They all crash. I don't think theres anything wrong with my RAM. I sometimes run a RAM freer, and when it quits there is like 200 RAM left. (Don't worry, i'm positive this is a good ram freer because i've tried with others too). The games just seem to quit randomly even when i have restarted my comp afresh. It has nothing to do with internet, because it quits offline too (simpsons is an offline game).
Here is my system info:
Windows XP
CPU - AMD ATHLON XP-A 1833 MHz (5.5 x 333) 2500+
Motherboard - Asus A7V8X
Memory - 512 MB PC2700 DDR SDRAM
Video Adapter - NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X (128 MB)

All the minimum requirements check out.

If i have left out anything, please tell me. I have been having this problem for months!! Please help!

Thanks for your time ahead of time!

I've had a glitch for a while now on a custom built computer - it will occasionally crash when I play any newer 3d games. Mostly, the game will freeze, minimize, and I will get an error message saying "VPU graphics recover has had to reset your something or other as it was no longer responding to graphics driver commands." Occasionally when it crashes colored bars will run across the screen. Fairly rarely, the monitor will simply act like it isn't plugged into the computer at all - it stops receiving any sort of visual info, I guess. This is making it impossible for me to play anything online, please help. My card is a Radeon 9600.

A:All 3d games crashing, card or driver problem?

Could be a overheating problem, or vid card is dying, you may get better response in hardware forum.

Hi, there... This is my first post here, but I haven't seen something similar, so I'll post it... It seems it's a universal problem, but only happens to me when I play games, so I thought I'd post on this forum, though it could be a question for the hardware section...

Anyway, here's my problem... On all games I've tried to play my pc crashes and restarts after a few minutes... Not all of my games are originals, but this has happened to Diablo 2 which is original, I think it's happened to Baldur's Gatae which is also original(But I'm not sure about it), and it's also happened to some other games that the "Before-you-ask" post says are unsupported, being cracked, so nvm these... It's also crashed lots of times when playing flashgames on

When I sent a report the Microsoft page told me that it was cause by some sound card problem, and I should either get a new driver or deactivate my sound card...

I downloaded the last driver, but the problem continued{I got a message that it's not signed by WHQL}... I also de-activated my sound card and uninstalled an reinstalled the driver and nothing got better...
My sound card is a Terratec Aureon 5.1 Fun....

I don't know what to do after this... Sorry if I posted on a wrong forum, btw...
Thanks a lot for your time!

Hello there, I've got a problem with my computer that's been bothering me for a long time now.
If possible, I'd like any of you to help me identify the problem, and find a solution.

I've never been able to fix this problem, on what should be a perfectly fine computer, bought new in march 2008. Full spec list in the end of the post. OS is Windows XP Pro.

The problem is that the computer is either crashing completely, or forcing games to shut down when I'm playing games. What I've come to think is that my power supply can't handle the hardware that's in the computer, when all the parts are being used maximally. Here's what I'm thinking: When a game that demands the whole computer to work at maximum capacity is running, the power supply will attempt to deliver the power all the hardware parts need to function properly at full speed. 'Say the computer actually need a 550w power supply to function properly, but the power supply i have only works at 500w, it will actually try to deliver 550w, ultimately causing it to "overheat", and force itself to reboot as a means of getting cooled down or simply slowing down to work at normal capacity - instead of keeping on working at more than 100% capacity over a longer period of time, which would end up destroying the power supply altogether. The crashes rarely occur when I do anything other than playing demanding games, basically any game that's got high hardwar... Read more

Hey I've got a problem with my computer and i cant figure out what it is exactly so i dont know where to start on fixing this.
Basicly when im playing a high powered game i.e World of Warcraft its crashing quite often turning the window into a black screen and then crashing my computer, as if its something to do with my graphics or spec not able to run it.
I cracked my computer screen a few months ago and lately got it fixed and since then this problem started to apear, i've never had a problem with this before then, I thought it may possibly be from getting a new screen i might need to reinstall my graphics drivers which i moved onto doing and it still didnt help my problem
I've got 3.00 GB of RAM
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T9400 @ 2.53GHz
My 2 graphics cards are ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870

So its more then enough for world of warcraft or most other high spec games
It would be greatly Appriciated for your help.

A:Need help identifying computer problem. Computer keeps crashing when playing games

Usual cause of this problem is overheating and/or weak power supply.

I have been having problems with games crashing on my computer lately. I mainly play World of Warcraft. Whenever I start WoW my comp will run for 10 min or so and then I will get a VPU recover error. WoW will continue running for anywhere from 30 min to a few hours longer and at that point the monitor will flicker off but the computer will continue running. At this point I have to restart the comp to get the monitor to work again. I have the latest video card and chipset drivers along with completely upgaded win 2K OS. The only weird part is that this problem is intermittent, my comp may work fine for a week or so and then it starts crashing. I have reformatted numerous times and it seems to work ok immediately, but the problems always come back in a week or so. Forgot to mention I have a 420W raidmax power supply that came with the case. Any help to remedy this problem would be appreciated, thanks.

A:Crashing during games please help !!

Most PS's that come with case are usually crap. Thats why the case and PS costs less than a good PS alone. Most of the cheap ones dont even put out the power they claim and can even damage components over time. The components you have use quite a bit of power. You can get a good Enermax or Antec PS for about $40-50.
When I first got my 9800 it ran so hot that it would lock up. I had to put on an aftermarket cooler. You can also try an older driver. Also make sure Fast Writes is turned off. FW tends to make ATI cards unstable.

Hello. I've already posted about this and no one could help. It's still not fixed and it's driving me nuts.

I'll be playing a game. And all of a sudden the screen freezes and gets 'muffled up' with weird squares. Shortly after the sound will start repeating. It is a hard crash that forces me to turn it off manually.

I've updated my drivers. No use.
I've checked the temperatures. No use.
I've spent hours Googling. No use.
I've checked the event log. No use.
I have ran programs that put excessive stress on the video card / CPU / RAM individually and together to see if these can simulate me playing a game so I can narrow down which component is the problem. It didn't crash during any of them.

OS: Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
Motherboard: Asus P5Q Pro
RAM: 4 GB (4 x 1 GB) Geil 'Black Dragon'
Graphics card: ATI Radeon HD 4870
HD: Seagate Barracuda 500GB
Case: Antec 300
PSU: OCZ 600w StealthXStreme
Peripherals: Razer DeathAdder mouse and bog standard old emachines keyboard
In the event log I saw "A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process (Fallout3)". A Google search led me to believe that disabling Windows vista Aero might fix it. It didn't.

Hello. I'm new to the forum so I hope someone can help me, and I hope this is considered the correct section.

I have recently bought a new Gaming Vibox computer, and when I play any games, after about 15-20 minutes the game crashes, freezes or minimizes to 3/4 screens.

I have had the error message 'Amd Driver stopped responding and has recovered' show up numerous times, but it doesn't always.

I have checked all my drivers are up to date and am just wondering what else I can do? Been searching the internet for a few days and still can't find a solution. It happens with every game I play - Skyrim, Football Manager, Company of Heroes!

My computer specs are:

Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) X4 750K Quad Core Processor, 4000 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
Graphics Chipset : AMD Radeon HD 6450
RAM: 8gb

Running windows 7 32 bit

Sorry I know you'll need more information on computer but my minds gone blank staring at it wondering what you'll need to know!!!!

I hope someone can help please, it's infuriating me!!

Just bought and installed 2 new games, The Godfather and Tony Hawks American Wasteland.

Both are crashing and freezing until I have to Ctrl Alt Delete out of them. Godfather does it as soon as gameplay starts, 5 secs or so in more or less, Tony Hawks runs for differing times, sometimes a few seconds, sometimes a few minutes but both will crash eventually.

Have updated Video, Sound, Mobo and DirectX drivers. Closed any running progs etc. PC meets spec and should play them no probs. First games I had any hassle with, can run COD2, HL2, Far Cry etc on high

Would be extremely grateful if anyone can help me with what is causing these to do so.

Any ideas? Installed latest drivers and cleaned of old ones.

I am having trouble with video games crashing. The more graphically intensive a game is (particularly FPSs), the more likely it is to crash. It never dumps in the same spot either... sometimes it will run a while, sometimes it crashes right away.

I am running a ATI 8500 All-in-wonder and a Sound Blaster Audigy SE, but I recently changed both video and sound cards and the hard drive and it didn't help.

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I can post the stack dump here if it will help, I never could read those things....

The two games I have tried... Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004 and Max Payne.. I tried Max Payne after Tiger Woods just to confirm a problem existed.

Video is choppy and freezes the screen on Tiger woods...Maxx payne crashes to the desktop, animations seem to run fine untill you get into play mode.

I really don't know if anyone can help here, as this post is going to be rather vague. Still, I'll give all the information that I can. I've checked and from what I can tell, all my drivers are up-to-date, as are my Windows updates. I haven't installed much, but I did uninstall a software firewall I had to see if that may have been the problem, and it didn't change anything.

Every game I've played for a decent length of time on this 2-week old PC has crashed at some point. Some more than others. Firstly, I'll give my specs.
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
Motherboard: Asus P5Q Pro
RAM: 4 GB (4 x 1 GB) Geil 'Black Dragon'
Graphics card: ATI Radeon HD 4870
HD: Segate Barracuda 500GB
Case: Antec 300
PSU: OCZ 600w StealthXStreme
Peripherals: Razer DeathAdder mouse and bog standard old emachines keyboard

Now, the list of games I've tried.

The Sims 2 - The main culprit. Usually it would start up fine and dandy, and then as soon as I went onto the 'create a character' area, it would crash within a few minutes. the crashing involved the screen sort of being divided into squares and misaligned, and the sound in my speakers repeating the last note of the music that had happened as it crashed. No response whatsoever from my computer and as a result me being forced to manually shut it down.

I tried this game again today and it lasted much longer. About an hour, maybe. Everything w... Read more

Okay so here I am, Talking with some Halo CE/PC clan friends in an Xfire chat room.
Next, We decide We're all Bored so we decide to play some CoD4. I'm playing,
Then my screen Goes blank, I Hear my Fan go Full speed, Then My computer reboots, But It's stuck at "Starting Windows". I decide that a system restore is my only option, So I go with that. For about the next week, No problems.

Right, So my Brand-Spanking New Copy Of Halo 2 Arrives. Boy am I excited, I suspect that after MS Shut down Original XBL, The PC Community will recive a much needed Boost. I don't activate my copy yet, I just want to play some campaign First. I load up the armory, And just as you get out of the tram-thing with johnson, I hear Lots of Sound Glitches, And the same thing as before. It does it a few more times. Then I played some DiRT 2 about 20 minute's ago, It it does the same thing.

I read on the back of my Graphics card box that the card i have needed a min of 300w power and i looked at my PSU and it only had 250w MAX, so i went out and get myself a "Hiper Power Low Noise 350w" PSU fitted myself!

But since ive got my new PSU i have found my games (Black and White 2 and Oblivion) have started to freeze and reset the computer!

Didnt have them two games before i got my new PSU!

Does anyone think is MAY be the PSU or not?

My system is:

Pentium 4 2.8ghz
1gb ram
256mb GeForce 6600

Which is enough is run both them games fine!!

Did you uninstall ALL drivers AND applications for your old card before fitting your new one?

There are several ways to fix this but it depends on what windows version you are using and how good you are with it!!

What kind of PSU are you using and have you checked the actual power out it is providing? Have you run memtest86 (google it, it's a free utility) to test your RAM? These are the two most likely culprits. Also, make sure you're running a stable driver for your video card. Try 78.05 for a 6600 series.

Hi all:

I have checked out a few forums and saw some people had the same problem I am having, but their resolutions didn't work for me.

I have an Athlon XP 1800, Win2k, 512 RAM, PNY GeForce 4 Ti4200.

Recently I updated my Battlefield 1942 to the 1.6 patch. The game ran smooth for a little while. Then one day it would crash (either crash window completely, or sometimes I could esc to the Desktop) just as the level was done loading.

I thought it might be a problem with just that game, but it seems to be doing it with every game now! Within a couple of seconds into the gameplay, it would freeze. The only option is to restart the PC.

I have re-installed the nVidia driver, reverted to an old (v44) driver, updated my DirectX to 9b, updated my via chipset drivers, disabled the fast write in bios, decreased my memory frequency.

Some people have said that they reformatted their HDD, reinstalled the OS and it still had the same problem.

Also, I contacted PNY (my card's manufacture) and they told me I could RMA it, but that they could tell if I was overclocking it, which would void my warranty.

Well, Ive never done any HARDWARE overclocking, only slight driver-level overclocking. Do you think they can tell if I have done that?

Thanks for any help

ok, so basically when i play nearly any game with 3d graphics, most notably those recently like battlefield 2, company of heroes (demo), C&C zero hour, act of war, stuff like that, the screen freezes, sometimes a load of artifacts appear on screen and then it will go black with something in the bottom right (to do with the monitor, dont think its important tho i'll find it and put it on here if it helps) before apparently going on standby (light goes from green to orange). this happens nearly all of the time i try and play a game and it is really frustrating. a similar problem happened a couple of months ago with the "no signal" error but i managed to fix that, however its just been in the last couple of weeks that this new problem has started happening.
earlier today i took the case off (carefully mind so as not to disrupt the airflow inside the case, to blow what little dust there was off the fans and everything, but it did the same again, with this error coming up "STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER" (taken from microsoft error report page thing). now installing the newer ATI catalyst drivers wont help, i know this because it didnt work last time and when that happened i had to update stuff in the device manager. i did that earlier but i didnt work. what i'm going to try right after this is take out all video drivers, reinstall and try to see if some newer omega ones ive got on here work.

Help! I have a problem with my system.
I have an Asus N51v with an Nvidia GeForce 240m and an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.80 GHz along with 4 GB of ram and a Windows 7 32-bit operating system.
Now, ever since, about a month of purchasing my notebook, I had the dreaded nvlddmkm.sys bug which caused artifacts and crashing for ONLY my games. I'd be able to do quite literally everything else without a problem. My games would crash in a time frame of 1-2 minutes all the way to 8 hours depending on the games. I still have the artifacts and the crashing which usually locks up my computer. I've looked into it previously and found out that this can sometimes be caused by temperature.
I've clocked my temperature and it has an idle temperature of 122 F.

Basically, I need help. ASAP.
I'm worried I may need a new graphics card in which case I'll just send the entire system over to Asus to repair it. I need my computer though. XD

I noticed this was happening a few weeks ago as I exited games, it would suddenly stop working and get an error "program failed" message in multiple games (oblivion and left 4 dead). In the last week, it's started to happen more and more often. Now it's closing out programs 5 minutes in to any 3d game (oblivion, fear, left 4 dead).
This is strange, as I've been using this system for months with no problems.

Tried running oblivion in a smaller window with speedfan on. Temperature peaked at 53C, and then cooled down a bit, and then computer crashed a few seconds later. Later I started up l4d on single player, paused it immediately to go to the bathroom, came back and it had crashed.

Some of these problems occurred after installing a new kodak printer. I'm noticing now that the kdiscover.exe is crashing often, although not neccessarily at the same time as my games. I uninstalled that as a test, still crashes. I also tried shutting down racagent (as that helped a friends computer). At the time it seemed to help, but the crashing continued to get worse.
I thought that drivers might be the issue, but newer drivers has not stopped the problem. I run AVG every morning, no viruses detected thus far. And the computers not running slowly. I ran defrag, and ccleaner doesn't detect any problems. Some of the other programs (registrybooster) did, but I would rather not pay $30 dollars unless I'm sure it will solve the problem.
I've attached the msinfo and dxdi... Read more

I'm having problems running games that use direct X. I play for about 2 min, and then when it has to work a little harder to render, the game freezes and dies, sometimes even restarts the computer. The specific game I'm trying to get to work is Dragonica, but this happens to all the games I've played recently (mainly 3D mmorpgs) It also happened before I reinstalled the OS and formatted everything.

Comp Info:
Windows XP Pro XP SP2.
Intel Pentium 4 2.66 GHZ, 1 gb ram.
Video Card: Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics controller.

Things I've Done:
Reinstalled the OS
Reinstalled Direct X
Reinstalled the Video Driver
Disabled the sound card
Run the video driver in lowest possible settings
Run the games in both windowed/fullscreen
Tested DxDiag (clean)
Run the game at lowest settings
googled like crazy

If anyone knows of any fixes or anything, that'd be great. It's not getting games to run, it's making them keep running.

A:Games Crashing

this could be due to an underpowered graphics (onboard) or more likely an underpowered power supply that is buckling under increased load. anyway, that's my guess. can you go into BIOS and check the voltages the PS is putting out?

(Before you read to much i put my PC specs at the end of this post.) The problem i am having all started when the game Rocket League updated through steam a new patch. It updated to v1.11. Ever since then when i try to run the game it starts to load and when the splash screen my PC completely shuts down instantly. Now before that update i had play 70+ hrs on the game with no issues what so ever.
The thing im having a hard time with is that when the PC crashes i can't just hit the power button and start the pc back up. what i have to do is shut the power off to the tower and turn it back on and start it. At one point this was limited to just the one game but now other games are causing the shutdown too. at one point the game would start up randomly so it would run with no issues and if i exited the game and try to start it back up it would crash the pc. then i tried running another game first and when the other game loaded i would then exit that game and then try to load rocket league and it would work and run. This is perplexing to me about why it is running like this.

One of the steps i took in trying to fix this problem was that i completely reformatted the SSD drive and installed a fresh copy of win 10 on my pc. I updated all drivers an this didn't seem to help at all. I thought that maybe it might be a driver issue or software issue with the game but i am not up to 4 games that are doing this to me now in the exact same manor. Two of the games run similar sof... Recently I was having an issue with my PC with my computer games crashing and was getting BSOD. I decided to build a new computer, replacing EVERYTHING, including the case. I am still having the issue. I try to play games like RIft, APB, Battlefield Bad Company 2, Mafia, etc.

They all either crash with the report error to developer OR just close without any reason. I don't get any indication the program has closed or stopped working.

I have no idea why, with NEW computer parts, that I would still have a similar issue. I took everything out of the computer, re-seated it, reformatted all of my HDD, re-installed the OS on other drive, removed older HDD, switched to SSD.

No matter what I do, I still get the same issue and I am at a loss. This has been going on for about 3 or 4 months and it just getting worse with the newer parts.

My one thought is, if it wasn't a driver issue, maybe your video card is dying. Lets hope that isn't it.

Install or update anything recently? A new antivirus or spyware scanner?
Defraged your hard drive?
Tried disabling any Virus scanners you may have?

Before I continue, my specs:

AMD 64 3000+
1.5GB DDR RAM (about 366mhz on two sticks, 200mhz on one, all single channel)
NVIDIA GeForce 7800GS (AGP 8x), OCed by XFX and fitted with a custom XFX fan as well.
500mhz PSU
Motherboard is a Socket 939... I think. Either that or a 754.

And yes, I am using the latest driver from NVIDIA (93.71). All right, I've got an interesting one for you. I'm fairly certain this is a graphics card related issue. Basically I've been suffering random crashes when playing games for a few months now. The crashes never happen outside of games. It all started with a demo of Call of Juarez. At random points during play, my computer screen would switch into standby mode and fans inside my computer would speed up (or at least sound like they were). I assumed this was some random software fault and reinstalled the game... surely enough it crashed less often, if at all after that, so I thought I was fine.

After that, I bought Gothic 3, and the crashing started there too. So, I reinstalled it, everything was fine, but then it happened again (seemingly when I didn't go into the menu and save for a while... which would allow my GPU to cool down, I suppose). Then it started happening recently on The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. And again on Warhammer 40,000: Dark Crusade. I've ran a temp check, and with Oblivion the crashes appeared to correspond with higher temperatures, as I was running at almost 70C when it crashed. But then I tried ... Read more

About a year ago i built my computer and had no problems at all. Maybe 6 months ago i started having trouble with my games, i would start to play when all of a sudden the screen went to some weird screen with vertical lines of usually 2 colors going down the screen and whatever sound was being played in the game would loop and play over and over. Ive probably spent more time troubleshooting then actually playing games these last few months, im pretty sure ive tried everything. Things ive tried:
Increasing the fan (not a temp problem)
reinstalling graphics card
overclocking in any and every way you could possibly think of
cleaning all the dust out
running torture tests (no errors)
switching monitors
check my power supply (its plenty enough)
and a few other things

For about the last month i havent had any issues at all but now all of a sudden the crashes are coming back. i havent changed anything or done anything different so im not sure why.
Games it Happens to: CODMW2 , Mass Effect 2 , Borderlands.
Games that work: Assassins creed , ETQW , FO3 , L4D2

I noticed that all of the games that dont work i got on steam, could this mean anything? but l4d2 was also purchased through steam but it works.

System Specs:
AMD Phenom 9950 Quad-Core Processor 2.60 GHz
8gb ram
Windows Vista 64 bit
ATI Radeon HD 4850

Im really confused and would really appreciate any help.

A:Why do my games keep crashing

What driver set are you running? Catalyst 10.1 is the latest I think.

Is DirectX up to date? What happens if you try to run games in DX9 mode?

I wouldn't try messing with the clocks unless you're looking for additional problems. If the card doesn't work well on factory settings then it's rarely worth your time to experiment with clock speeds. Vertical lines can point to faulty video memory, and although you may not experience problems in some games, the card may be going south.

I'm running legit copies of Halo 2 and Assassin's Creed, and they tend to crash my display driver/video card at any random old time. Usually around 5 minutes in. Less for AC. I know it's the display driver or video card or whatever because the game freezes with red squiggly lines all over the place, then the monitor says no input detected. The computer, however, is still running. I have Vista Ultimate 32bit, and an EVGA 8800GT. I can post more info if necessary, but please if you have any suggestions let me know. All my drivers are up to date and I disabled my onboard graphics in my bios so that only PCIE is outputting. Thanks in advance.

A:Crashing in Certain Games

"If" you are overclocking, try turning the clock speed down. If not, then based on your description of the "red squiggly lines all over the place, then the monitor says no input detected." sounds like either the resolution is set to high, or more than likely, your video card is failing.

It would also help if you posted your system specs as well.

Ok..if i am honest this problem is not entirely to do with games or gaming, but hopefully you guys can help anyway.

(less than a week old)
- Intel Pentium D 930 Processor (Dual Core)
- 3.0GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2MB Cache
- 1024MB DDR RAM
- 300GB Hard Disk Drive
- 256MB ATI X550 HM Graphics
- Microsoft Windows XP Media Center

I am currently on a new pc, and i am having a load of problems with it. First of all games such as BF2 and GRAW keep crashing. At first i though that might might be a conflict between the processors, so i went Ctrl + Alt + Delete, found the process, right clicked and set affinity to CPU 0, hoping that as it was only using one, a conflict wouldn't happen. But i have also noticed that other programs such as registry mechanic and other random software keep crashing also. Surely this isn't a problem with the dual core. Anybody got any ideas of how to fix or diagnose the problem. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

P.S I am sure there is a problem, as this new computer IMO runs no-where near the specifications of my old pc, which has about half the specs of the new one.

I run a 500mhz AMD Duron, with 64 megs RAM and my OS is WIN98...I have installed a couple of games on my system, The Sims and Civilization II and have been having problems running them lately...
Specifically The Sims will play for about half an hour then crash...and my CDRom won't even read the CivII disk...
I have checked the device manager and am told that the CD works fine, ran a scandisk and found no errors, defragged the system, anti-virus checks, dr. watson all to no avail...I am quickly becoming discouraged...
The only other thought I had was that the CDRom was hosed, but I can still play music CDs.
I have also installed the 'X-Setup' tweak utility and I hope that I haven't made any adjustments that would adversely affect my system. If you can help it would be VERY much appreciated.

Let's get a few reports to help sort this out.
First is this one:

Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).
While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility:
Next, please provide these reports (even though you're not reporting BSOD's).  They'll contain other info that will help troubleshoot this problem:

Not sure if this is a hadware problem or an operating system problem but here it goes...

I built a machine not too long ago and I'm having problems running games on it. I'll load up a game and play it for a little bit, then it just freezes and loops the current sound. I can't alt+tab or ctrl+alt+del out of it, so I always have to restart my machine in these cases. Sometimes it happens within the first couple minutes of opening the game, sometimes in an hour.

The games are running at full or close-to-full spec, but I don't believe this is the problem, as I'm running some powerful hardware. The problem has occured on the following games: Call of Duty4, Lost Planet, BioShock, Company of Heroes, Fable, Team Fortress 2 (when finding servers), and Hellgate London.

My current hardware...
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz, 1066MHz FSB
Motherboard: EVGA NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI
Power: Rosewill 850W
Video: XFX GeForce 8800GTX
Storage: Western Digital 160GB SATA

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

EDIT: Forgot to mention I'm running Windows XP 32-bit as my operating system.

All games are crashing after a few minutes of play.
The games are Neverwinter Nights, Dungeon Siege, Soldier of Fortune 2 and Divine Dininty. This problem seem to start around the time I installed Divine Divinity. This was the last game I installed. Divine Divinity never worked correctly.

I used System Suite 4.0 to diagnose any problems and checked for viruses. All checked out OK.

Any suggestions would help. Thanks

i feel for you. that's my problem too.

one moment Morrowind was running fine. the next time i opened it, it was freezing on me, making me do cold boots. i HATE that. anyway.. these suggestions are a little unorganized, but here they are....

have you tried RESTORE to the point before you installed Divine Divinity?

what about the basics? have you tried...

... to close down all virus scanners, disk doctor, anything that runs in the background?

... uninstall the games and reinstall one at a time? testing after each install?

what about your drivers? have you tried ripping them out (registry included) then booting into VGA mode?

have you uninstalled and/or deleted your hardware from your device manager? reinstalling each thing, one at a time?

have you tried using hardware acceleration? turn it down a notch at a time and attempt to play? going all the way down the scale? what happens?

tried playing with no sound? sometimes sound drivers really mess games up.

good luck.

Hi guys.

I have recently finished building my computer, my first build. I've noticed that when trying to play games (Starcraft 2, Sniper: Ghost Warrior, King Arthur: Collection), I can play for a little bit, usually between 20-40minutes but then when I'm playing the screen will all of a sudden go black/dark blue and the audio will start looping. Sometimes the computer will then restart itself, other times I will have to hard reset it myself by physically pressing and holding the on/off button on my case. I had been hoping it would be an outdated driver for the graphics card, but I have updated to Catalyst 11.12 and there is still problems, I have also tried Catalyst 11.5 and 11.11 and each version I still have crashes on. I have tried re-installing Windows 7 again and that also did not fix the problem. Today I updated my BIOS to the latest version and that seemed to fix it for a bit but then it crashed again. I have tried just about everything I can think of and nothing seems to fix it. Could you guys possibly help me out?

I know its simple and most probably been suggested but have you tried a FRESH install of the latest drivers? Fresh means completely removing the old and installing the new.

What graphics card do you have? (am i just not seeing it in your specs?)

Monitor your temps during game play and when see what they go up to when they crash.

i use vista 64 bit for gaming as well as xp pro. i have 2 hard drives. one for vista and one for xp. i can play any game i want on xp pro flawlessly. but almost any game freezes on vista. i have tried many clean installs and everything i can think of to stop this from happening. i really like vista but for gaming it has been a horrid experience for me on vista. i have an ati 4870 1 gig gfx card,Q9550 quad core 2.83 cpu with xigmatech cooling. 750 watt psu corsair and 4 gigs of ddr2 1066 ram. now let me clarify i have tried many ideas from an over clocking forum. being i can run anything fine on xp with no problems tells me it is not hardware but a software issue. but it is figuring out what software is causing the hard freezing on vista hdd during gaming has me dumbfounded. seems L4D runs fine but bf2 and cod4 hard freeze resulting in a hard reset. i thought it was punkbuster, but it does it in non PB servers. now i do have a wireless card i use for gaming, some think it is the wireless driver, but it works fine and i can use it fine for xp. xp never gives me any headaches on anything. but vista doesnot seem to like online gaming and sometimes locks on when using online updating for drivers/software. ????????

A:games crashing

first off XP is way more stable than vista (i love vista but it is the truth).

i also would lean to it being the wireless card, as i have no issue playing any games on my rig with Vista x64.

can you hook up a wired connection to the rig to see if it still freezes with that connection or no?

Hi all. Recently the games i play ( face of mankind and prey) have started to crash to desktop and sometimes crash my whole system making it reboot. I have been playing face of mankind for over a year now and never had these problems before but when in a combat situation it will regulary crash to desktop, also i just bought prey and this will also crash to desktop with a jerky sound repeat and sometimes crash my whole system after playing for between 5 and 30 mins. Also BF2 has never worked on my system, i can play for about 5 mins then my whole system will lock up, with a jerky sound repeat, then wont even start afterwards. I tried a system restore to before the problems started happening but this didnt fix the problem. I have a feeling the problem might be my sound card, as it is quite old in relation to the rest of my system. Im sure u can understand my frustration as my computer cost near to 2000 and my favourite games are no longer playable.
my system specs are:

Geforce 6800GT(with latest drivers)
SB live! sound card
1 gig ram

I am tempted to buy a new sound card (fatality SB) to try and fix the problems but if it didnt work would obviously be a big waste of money, any ideas or comments that might help me solve this problem would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance, Kroma.

I tried to play the game Half-Life 2: Episode One a week ago. When I started it, I noticed the little black holes in the textures. Fine, I can live with that, I thought, but suddenly, the game crashed and ATI Catalyst opened the Send Error Report window. I sent it twice, but they're still not responding. I tried to play Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines too, but the same thing happened (it was working just fine two months ago). The first thing I thought was that there was something wrong just with those games (cause they use the same engine), but I noticed those little black holes in the Catalyst Control Center "3D" tab, window with that red car in 3D (it doesn't crash though).

I've been running a solid system for over a year now. I upgraded the video card about a month ago to a card running the Geforce 2 chip, and it's still been working fine.

Over the weekend I upgraded my motherboard to the Abit VH6 with a P3-733 (133 Mhz bus), and now I'm running into some problems. All my accellerated games seem to run fine, but every now and then they'll just crash to desktop with no warning, and 2 times so far, the computer fully rebooted.

Should I take the motherboard back and try a different one, or does this sound like it's more of a video card problem?

A:All accellerated games are crashing

One thing I just wanted to add to this, I did reformat my drive after I installed the new motherboard, so there should be no problem with drivers. I've also tried the manufacturer drivers (I always go with reference first) with the Elsa video card, and some of my games wouldn't even work with that, so I switched back to reference. (my other computer has a Creative labs Geforce 2, and Im starting to think I like that card a *lot* more than this Elsa pos)

Hi. I'm running a modded version of Windows XP. Some of you may know if it, it's called Windows XP Ultimate (by Johnny).

This problem is not due to it being a non-official release of XP, since it was happening before I switched to this version.

The problem I'm having is that windows all of a sudden decides to completely freeze, stuttering the sound from the last eighth of a second or so over and over. The mouse is frozen, ctrl>alt>delete does nothing, etc. The only way to recover is to reboot.

This problem, I've found, happens most often when I'm playing Starcraft. However, on rare occasion it has happened at other times, such as when I'm just browsing a website or talking to friends on ventrilo.

It is the most frustrating problem ever, because I have absolutely no idea what is causing it.

Things I have tried to do to fix it:
-I have re-installed starcraft, though I didn't think this was the problem in the first place since it happens outside of starcraft.
-I have run CCleaner and cleaned the registry
-I have tried going into the task manager and ending every process that didn't seem absolutely critical to what I was doing (things I left open were things like my mouse/keyboard drivers, audio drivers, the actual starcraft exec, windows essential processes, etc).
-I have tried running memtest86+ for a full day, which turned up no errors
-I have tried underclocking my ram and processor (though my cpu temps are only at about 160F when this happens a... Read more

Hello -orb-

Have a look in these places for errors

1. Right click My Computer / Properties / Hardware / Device Manager.
Look for "Yellow" errors

2. Control Panel / Performance and Maintenance / Admin Tools / Event Viewer / System.
Look for "Red" errors. Double click on error.
Take a note of the Event ID and also the Source and post them back.

This might throw some light on the problem

Yay. The title says it--my games are constantly crashing. For example, Ragnarok Online suddenly gives me a disconnection error; Warcraft 3 suddenly flashes a Fatal Error, and other games just exit out of. This has been annoying me for almost a week now, and I cannot take it anymore. I NEED TO KILL PEOPLE ONLINE!

...Not that I'm addicted, or anything, but seriously. Anyone have any idea what might be causin' this? virus and malware scans come up negative, so I've no clue. This is a great mystery!

(Note that my computer's been working fine for about two years; I run WinXP SP-2...or 3. I can't recall. I'll check and edit this later.)

Well, if anyone has any insight into this problem, your assistance is GREATLY appreciated.

A:Games constantly crashing

First, reboot your cable/DSL modem, if you have one, and also reboot your router/switch/hub. These can be rebooted by just unplugging the power cable, then plugging it back in after 10 seconds or so.

Does your computer have an integrated network controller, or a separate PCI network card? If it's integrated, the ethernet cable will plug in near the USB ports in the back, if it's separate, it will plug in somewhere below the video card in the back.

If it's integrated, try a separate card. They can't cost more than $5 nowadays.

If it's a separate card, try the integrated network controller, or, if there isn't one, try another network card. Again, they're like $5.

The reason I'm blaming the network card is because they're so cheap. It really can't hurt to try another card, there is a huge surplus of NIC's on the market right now.
If these errors occur during single player games, then that's another issue.

Alright, well there are a couple things you can try, and another thing if you have the parts around to use.

First, make sure you have the latest drivers, available at

Download and run SpeedFan and make sure you're CPU isn't overheating.

If you have another video card laying around, you could try it in the computer, just to make sure it isn't your video card.

I've had this problem for a long time. For most games (apparently, any game that uses DirectX), I can run them for about 30 minutes to an hour, before they freeze, forcing me to restart my computer. This never happens when I'm playing an OpenGL game (Quake 3, Soldier of Fortune 2, etc.), or not playing a game at all. I've tried reinstalling DirectX, but that apparently didn't fix anything. I've also tried reinstalling my graphics card drivers several times; also ineffective. My graphics card is an Radeon 9600 Pro; if that's not enough information, I'll add more. Any help is greatly appreciated.

A:Computer keeps crashing during games

When you say "Crashing during games" do you mean only the game crashes? Or the entire computer. Does it reboot? Do you see a blue screen of death?
Chances are that your hardware (video card) is dying. When the video card dies, it doesn't communicate properly with your driver, and causes your driver to crash. It's not a driver problem, it's a hardware problem. If this is a desktop computer, consider going to your computer store and buying a replacement video card that fits your computer. If it does not fix the problem, you can return the card if you kept your reciept.

Hey guys, long time lurker, but never felt the need to get an account until now lol. I just bought a PC off cyberpower but it keeps crashing when playing games such as WoW or CS source. The specs are:
AMD Phenom X4 945 (4)
MB: Gigabyte MA790XT-4UDP
HD: Western digital - WD3200AAJS - 300 GB
GPU: HD 4850 Radaeon
8 GB of ram

So when I first got it, and it started freezing up I bought it with a Nvidia 9500 GT and I assumed it must have been the vid card but it keeps freezing still. I am running on Vista (64 bit) and not too sure how to fix it. One day I lowered my Vista display settings and WoW was running perfectly but then the next day I tried booting it up again with the same settings and I kept crashing.
Just today I realized a message when loading up my comp stating: AMD data change- update new data to DMI, I wasn't too sure what it meant but I played with the BIOS and tried seeing if SATA2 connection to my HD was the problem? I think it is MOBO or HD related but can't be sure, I am in desperate need of help and would appreciate any advice, thanks guys.

Hello, recently I have bought a whole new computer, and am experiencing some problems. i am playing games like Red Alert 3, Crysis, and UT3. And also many others. I'm wondering if you guys can shed some light on my problem?

While playing games i get a little 3 second freeze, then a black screen for about 2 secs. after that it goes back to normal. After 5 times of the game doing that, it crashes. My ATI continually does VPU recovery. But only in games.

I don't think its a hardware issue, Ive tried Memtest86, and no errors. Ive tried getting all the latest drivers and/or software. I have tried switching ports for my graphics card, and reseeded my ram. I don't think voltage is a problem, because I have a 585V power supply. Heating shouldn't be an issue. I'm running speed fan and the max any of the temps get is 45 degrees Celsius.

Your power supply specs should be listed similar to this: [email protected], +5V25A, [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]

Yes that is 12 v and it is a fine power supply, i'm pretty sure you didn't read your power supply specs properly, can you name the make and model?

I have a friend who enjoys playing games on the pogo site. But she is having problems--after playing for a little while she gets kicked out. uses Java, she has tried uninstalling Sun's version and installing Microsoft's version, she is now back to the latest version that Sun has.

She gets kicked out whether she is using Internet Explorer or Firefox. Any ideas why? Any ideas if there are any settings she needs to make so as to not get kicked off pogo?

Thanks in advance.

I bought a new computer and I can't get any game to run for more than 2 minutes. All games tested are freezing up, crashing to desktop or rebooting my system.

All my drivers and patches are up to date and there is no dust inside. All fans are running as well.

I have a 300w power supply but I am unable to give you further info as the case is covering the brand name

There's 2 sticks of DDR333 PC2700 512MB AZEN RAM.
The motherboard is a Soyo SY-PX400 Dragon Ultra Platinum.

Games tested include Everquest(all patches and expansions enabled), IGI-2 covert strike and Elder scrolls III Morrowmind.

I've run out of troubleshooting options. At this point I'm completely clueless.

A:all games crashing after 2 mins

Sounds like it's either overheating, or the power supply is insufficient.

Try playing it with the side of the case off, and make sure the video fan is working correctly while playing. Maybe even point a larger fan towards the computer or something.

Also, try running the computer with only 1 stick of memory, and and unneeded PCI cards taken out. If this helps, or lets it play longer, then you need a better power supply.

So a few months ago, I had a problem where my computer would crash after 30 minutes to an hour of game playing (not terribly graphically strenuous games either). Periodically the screen would go black, and say that there was no signal, so I decided to monitor the problem with speedfan to rule out heating. The highest I ever saw was 75C for either the GPU or the CPU, which is not a shutdown temperature, I don't think. Eventually, one time when the computer tried this nice little trick, instead of irreparably crashing (and forcing me to restart the computer) it just blinked and informed that it it recovered from a driver failure. The computer ran without problems for a month or two, but recently began acting up again. I have since updated my graphics card drivers, and nothing has changed. Any Ideas?

I am running windows 7 home 64 bit that came preinstalled on a Asus g60 laptop.
I have recently used the recovery disc to reformat and restore to factory settings. I've used this laptop for about a year and 4-5 months now.

I am thinking it could be a hardware problem since this seems to only happen when I'm playing games, but unsure. My comp will crash and I have to restart it. When I restart it a windows error comes up saying it was a BSOD error.

I've attached a minidump and an xml crash report that windows said described the problem. Also attached is the folder that the sticky required me to make.

Your graphics driver kernel is failing.
We need to completely remove and reinstall the driver package.
There are tools for getting it off the system.
Guru3D - Driver Sweeper (Setup) download from

As for updating it with the most recent version available for your machine.
According to your system information this should be the proper and most recent driver for that laptop's graphics.

First here is my basic setup:
Asus A7v333 Motherboard
Athlon XP 2100+
GeForce 4 TI 4200
1.5 gigs of Crucial xms PC2700 (3x512)
Windows XP Pro

This has been something that has been off and on but lately has gotten much worse. Basically, when I try to load a game, I lose video. Monitor light turns orange. Once that happens, my computer won't boot. It turns on but there is no video. If I let it sit, usually overnight, it will boot again, but crash the same way when windows loads. I have to reboot it, enter safe mode and remove the NVIDIA drivers. Then I can boot as much as I want. Once I reinstall the drivers, it gets crazy again. I have tried different versions of Forceware but am currently trying the latest. I should also mention that once the computer finally boots after sitting for a while, it will dump me into the bios with a warning about the frequency settings and multiplier of my cpu. I am not overclocking and have never tried to. I just have them set to auto detect and the speed is correct, 1.7 ghz. I tried a fresh format over the weekend and it ran solid and stable until I tried to run games.

I have tried a different TI4200 and the same thing happens. It was working fine until about 3 weeks ago. Now it is horrible. I didn't add anything new to the system and didn't install any new or different software. I have no idea what is going on. All I can think is maybe the motherboard is just shot. Any advice would be very helpful. Thanks

Welcome to Techspot!
Try the Asus website for a BIOS update.Read the version's notes to see if anything relates to your hardware/software.It's always best to flash only if there is a direct issue.
