Shorted my power supply

This is kinda funny

I stuck a screwdriver into my power supply fan so that I could test noise levels without the fan. Well even though the computer was off, it sparked. Now my computer wont start. Do I need a new case? Did I cause damage to other parts of the computer.

Unless I am missing something, it looks to me like you would need to push REALLY hard - hard enough to crush and break the plastic piece in the middle of the USB port.

Hi guys this is my first post here and kinda new in this forum. I have a socket478 PC with a stucked power button i've removed the front panel and cut the wires that is connected to the end of power switch and try to short it and guess what it didnt worked no fan movement no mobo light indicator no beeps. Before i tried to turn it on by shorting the power switch wires i removed all external parts and memory the only thing that is hooked up is the cpu. Could it be a mobo problem?

A:broken power switch "shorted mobo not responding"

You want to jumper the wires together for only a second or two. The computer won't turn on, or will quickly turn on and back off, if the wires are left jumpered together. You need to have memory installed for the computer to start up.

My laptop will no longer turn on.  When the AC adapter is plugged in, the LED light is white indicating power is arriving at the laptop. However, nothing happens when I push the power button. Troubleshooting steps I have completed already include: Hard reset (several times including after each step below)Tried starting without the batteryRemoved all removable components and reseated themRemoved all removable components as well as bottom cover. Cleaned with compressed air. Put everything back.Nothing appears wrong and nothing happened between the last time it turned on and this time that I am aware of. The laptop is out of warranty, and I am pretty handy with computers. Is there anything that can be suggested short of a hardware replacement that would help get this resolved? TIA

The tips I got with this Kensington 33197 power adapter have numbers stenciled on them like N3, N5, N19, etc. The tips sold on their web site make no mention of the "N" numbers and have numbers like K20059, K20050, etc. and there is no cross reference.

You can also see a complete reference for "N" numbers to all the laptops they support at the above link. Again, no mention of the numbers Kensington uses on their site.

I need a cross reference for these kinds of numbers.

Kensington referred me to their telephone tech support; but, there is a language or cultural barrier that prevents their understanding what I need.

Does anyone know of such a reference?

This is a common problem (I see lots of posts)
The problem source is the [Dell] AC adapter.  PA-21 Family, 65W, P/N: NX061.  It is made in China.
I have an XPS M1330.  Using Dell after warranty service, replaced the Mother Board twice, replaced the battery twice, replaced the AC adapter twice - not fixing it.
Turns out the power warning message is very informative.  It states "Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or greater for best system performance".  So, I plugged in my Dell 95W adapter - WOW Problem Solved.
A lab test of my new Dell 65W AC adapter shows it to be 64.6 watts.  If this unit gets hot (like after several hours of use), it may not put out the full 65 watts - the system may not recognize the adapter, it may power the system ok, but won't charge the battery.
These units burn out after only a few months of use. Their cables are too fragile. If Dell's or their supplier's Quality Control can't produce a reliable 65W product - I found seveal "Made In USA" universal adapters.

A:AC Adapter - Alert - "AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined"

Well my solution was simple.
I just removed the battery pack and powered up my notebook. Then I turned off the notebook replaced the battery pack and VOILA. The error message was gone.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.

I tried to plug in my Vestax o5Pro III Mixer into the Mic Port on the top of my Antec 900 Case via RCA to Mini plug. I wanted to record my mixes via a program called Audacity. As soon as I plugged in my Mixer, my PC goes dead.

I know that I shorted something but I am not sure how to go about finding out what it is that is not letting me power up my PC. When I plug in PC, a green light lights up on Mobo, but other than that nothing happens when I push power button. What do I do?

A:Need help! I think I may have shorted something...

Check your mobo manual and try resetting manually the BIOS. This can be done either by reseating a jumper or, if no jumper is available, taking off the mobos' battery out and then back in.
Try also taking out the power button connector and attempt, with a lot of care, i am not responsible for any further damages done hereafter, short the pins with a screwdriver. Might be a dead power button.
Other than that, the BIOS migth went corrupted or something blew on the mobo.
Hope it helps.

Hello, I am wondering if anyone out here can try and help me with this. I did something really, really stupid and have messed up my "baby" (read: computer)

My boyfriend was cleaning the inside of our computer with an air compressor so we had the side panel taken off. I went to put the side panel back on not realizing the computer was turned on. When I went to connect the two cables that are on the door that come out of the side panel door fan, it sparked and shorted out and the computer turned itself off. Initially, I thought I tried to connect the wrong cables, but that can't happen because they are the opposite ends, and you cannot connect a male to male or female to female. The power supply seems to be OK, I can get the computer to turn on if I leave the cables disconnected. The computer will boot, I can access BIOS and the Windows loading screen will come up, but after a minute or two...nothing. I am assuming this is because one or both of the hard drives are not hooked up. If I try and hook either or both of those cables back up the computer will not turn on at all. My question is it the cables themselves that are messed up, where I could buy new connectors and it would be ok? Or is the hard drive(s) that are messed up? In BIOS it shows only one of the hard drives as being connected, but I don't know which one. It no longer shows them as Master and Slave, just shows it on a line above that. I have tried the reset power button and disconnec... Read more

Hot swapping any device that is not intended for hot swapping often causes damage. From your post [and pic] I would guess that you tried to plug in the fan on the side of the case. This fan is powered by a molex [four pin] connector that is daisy chained with one or more hard drives.

To troubled shoot the system, I would disconnect both hd and any optical cd type drive. Now try and boot the computer and see if you can enter the bios. If you can, make sure each ide channel is enabled and set to "Auto" Now shutdown and connect just the primary drive and see if it boots. If it does, shutdown and connect the slave drive; again see if it boots. If successful, shutdown and connect your optical [cd] drives; again reboot.

This process will determine which drive are damaged. BTW I doubt that you damaged the cables; it is the drive circuitry and or mb that gets damaged.

Last night I had my Emachines T6412 PC plugged in to my APC battery backup. (It is stock except there is an extra hard drive installed, and also two random video cards I found in scrap computers, and a wireless card I also found in a scrap computer.) Earlier the red light on the backup indicating that the battery needed replacing was blinking red, but I figured no big deal, cuz I rarely need the backup anyways. Anyways I had the backup turned off, the computer was plugged into the side that supports backup and surge protection, and I had 2 monitors plugged in as well via VGA thru the 2 random video cards I found. I then powered on the battery backup, and three seconds later there were two loud pops in the back of my Emachines. After turning off the backup, I checked it out, but there didn't seem to be any trouble structurally. So because of a school policy, I had to wait until morning to turn on my computer, and when I tried, there was no response from the computer at all. (I had already turned the backup back on, and this time the red "replace battery" light is not flashing. Also no loud pops either.) So I am assuming that the thing is fryed? If so, Is it just certain parts? Also, is there any way to fix it at all? Also is my hard drive data gone? First of all I'll post my specs

Mobo: Asus socket AM2 M2N-Sli Deluxe
CPU: AMD Athlon X2 6800+
PSU: Unsure but it's 750 Watt
RAM: 4 Gigs Kingston Value
HDD: Not important but there was 4 hooked up at the time.
Opitical: 1 Hooked up at the time
Vid: ATI 1300x PCI Not express
That's about it I think.
Ok, my rig was working great, I hadn't overclocked it or anything. Well... yesterday I went to plug in my headphones and I wasn't looking and I accidently plugged them into the front USB port and it must have shorted and it shut my computer down. I didn't think much of it, I've had power failures happen similar to this. Pushed the power button, nothing. Turned off the power supply and turned it back on and it instantly started up without pushing the button and then it shuts off after about 2 seconds.

Thinking it still had a surge in there I removed my motherboard and tried to let it discharge a bit but still the same thing, it instantly fires up without touching anything when I hook the power supply up and then shuts off a second later. I tried clearing the cmos and still the same thing. So I'm thinking I either screwed my mobo or I'm hoping it's just the psu. I jumped a green and black wire on the psu to see if it was still running properly and it runs fine without shutting off that way so I'm thinking it's my motherboard....

Any help on getting my motherboard fired back up would be great.

first thing would be to try another psu, if you have damaged this one it may not boot your system, even though it powers up for a few seconds doesnt mean its working correctly.

Having said that it is likely you have blown something on your motherboard as the USB connects directly to it, i know this because i have also done this to one of my old motherboards. If you have blown it then you'll have to get another.

first things test the psu with a multimeter OR try another one.

Foolishly I played with a hard drive, while powered and it touched the computer case and zap, and has since stopped working all together. I acquired a used drive, same make and model and swapped out the controller. The drive now runs at what sounds like even speed, but it clicks, and windows wont finish starting up. I I place it as the primary slave on another machine, the machine wont run, it says there is no master or slave drive present. When I set it as master and it alone, it is sometimes recognized and other times not. When it is it still wont load windows to the desdtop. Does anyone know how or if I may resolve this issue. I read about trying to see if Fdisk can recognize the drive, but I don't know how to get there, and what to do if it does or does not recognize it.
Help or advice, other than the obvious, "stay out of a running computer". Thanks

My 7 year old was trying to play Lego Star Wars on my computer last night. He told me he couldn't get the game controller plugged into the front USB. I was making dinner at the time so I told him to do something else if he couldn't get it working and I'd check on it later. So a bit later I go and try to see what the problem is. My oldest son has his Ipod plugged into the keyboard USB but it isn't charging. I try to plug it into a front slot an nothing. I shut down the computer and then it decides it won't start...

The light keeps flashing on the power button as well as the light is flashing on the back ethernet port (which I don't use, it's set up for wireless) there is also a green light on what looks to be the motherboard that is on inside the case. I haven't taken it apart yet.

I ask my son again what the problem was and he says that he couldn't
get it plugged in to the front USB. He kept trying but it wouldn't go in.

And it made some "snapping" sounds....

I took a much closer look at the USB front port and it is rather crunched up. It's pretty obvious he was trying to force it in the wrong way. I'm afraid he crossed some contacts or something and shorted something out. He's only 7 and I really am trying hard to not kill him. Regarding the damaged front USB connector.

Inside your computer, the front USB connector plugs into the Motherboard.
It is usually a black block connector, with one corner pin not used.
Whilst the computer is off. Unplug the Front USB Connector from the Motherboard (you should see the letters USB on the Motherboard near this connector as well.

Unplug the USB. And try turning on again.

i think i may have shorted out my laptop, as its the only thing i can imagine that could have gone wrong. my power cord had 4 places in it that i had cut apart and put it back together, since my puppy chewed it up. it worked just fine, and then the part closest to where the tip inserts into the laptop needed to be soldered together, that happened twice, then the part close after the box in the middle went out, and soon after repairing that (never having opened that box), is when this happened:

in the middle of being used, the screen when whiteish, and the caps and scroll lock were blinking, as well as the CD drive light. it would only turn off when i held down the power button for awhile.

I have a new cord now, i had ordered one about an hour before this happened.

now when i try to turn on my laptop, still the caps, scroll lock and CD drink light blink, the screen stays a steady black, and nothing happens. also theres a clicking noise every once in awhile from the inside.

what could have happened? did it short out? it is no longer under warranty, what will i need to replace? its a compaq presario if that matters.

i have no boot disc to put into the laptop, and the CD drive does open.

It is possible that you fried the internal DC power board. What is the part number/model of this Presario?

For the last two weeks, every time I start my Dell INSPIRON E1705 while using the power supply I am greeted with the following message. "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 90W AC adapter or higher for best system operation". I press the F1 Key and everything works fine. I've read about this on other websites and most say it's a design flaw in the power supply after the cord has been properly wound around the supply as designed. Apparently a few of the cords internal wire strands become broken and cause this message. My computer is from June 2006 and shouldn't be having this issue so early...or ever. This seems like a flaw that should have created some type of manufacturers recall since so many people are having this issue. I'm of course out of warranty, will Dell replace this free of charge?

A:Power Supply - "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined....."

You are correct, the failure is due toloss of the power supply ID signal. Sometimes this happens because of strain on the plug, which breaks the signal wire. Some even are so severe that the insulation breaks away from the plug; this is due to rough handling. The other cause is one or more of the power socket solder connections to the system board become broken. This also is related to severe handling. I have seen one case where all three power connections and three of four mechanical connections were disconnected. If the power supply is bad, a replacement will cure the problem. If not, then the socket is bad, and this will require a system board replacement. If you are experienced, you can try to resolder the connections. I am experienced and was not able to get my daughter's E6000 to work by resoldered. More recent Dells are using a replacable power connection board which is a much cheaper repair.

I'm an ex guitar amp tech and have worked on computers for years (before PC's and integrated circuits) and worked at a NASA PC board repair facility. I wouldn't tackle something like that, even if I could get the proper replacement IC. That is "Surface Mount Technology (SMT) type and in most cases requires special equipment to work on. In addition, most PC boards are multi-layer which also requires specialized equipment.

There are places that sell refurbished motherboards. That is your best option.

I have been trying to use an old IDE internal HD as an external one using a borrowed IDE to USB adapter with power supply. I'm not an expert on hardware, and the instructions included were far from thorough. I carefully removed it from the old computer (it kept giving the blue screen of death and it's too old for me to bother trying to fix it) and carefully connected it to the adapter and power supply and got it spinning up. When I plugged the USB end into my computer, it showed that it installed the drivers successfully and was ready to use. But I couldn't find it anywhere in My Computer. I checked the instruction paper and it only had instructions for OSs up to XP. So I unplugged it and reattached it a couple times to see if that would get it working. After a couple times doing this (I can't remember in what order I unplugged things) the HD stopped spinning up when I plugged it in to the power supply. I can still feel it trying to (it gives a little bzz about every second and I can feel it "trying" to move by the way it shakes a little bit; I'm not sure how to explain it except that it feels like it's starting to spin and then stops just as quickly, and repeats consistently every second-ish) Listening closely I can hear it making other noises as well, like the clicking sound on older systems you hear when the HD is really busy.

A:Shorted out hard drive?

Nevermind, I hooked it directly up to the power cable in the old computer and that powered it fine, so it's an issue with the power adapter. Unfortunately, the actual IDE to USB adapter doesn't work either. Either the driver for it is faulty, or the cable itself is. It shows that it's installing the drivers, and that it installed successfully, but plugging it into the hard drive does nothing. It doesn't show up as a storage device. And of course it came from china, so no brand or any way of getting support for it. And the net doesn't have any kind of "generic" driver for it, so I've given up on it. I even tried it on an XP machine and got the same (lack of) results.

I just got all the parts for my new build yesterday...
ASUS P5B Deluxe
Conroe E6600 C2D
WD 150gb 10krpm SATA HD
MSI 7950GX2
Corsair DDR2 1066 x2GB
Creative X-Fi Premium
Mushkin 650W PSU
Then I've got 2 IDE DVD+RW drives and an ATA 200GB HD...which will be installed/replaced as needed...the mobo only supports 1 IDE cable in Master/Slave.

I've got the system built to the basics, all I have hooked up to power is the mobo, case fans x4, the 2 DIMMs, and the video card.

I'm thinking either the CPU main fan is bad, or the motherboard shorted the power connector on the first boot, because all case fans will spin, the video card fan will spin, and technically, the system will POST, but i'm not about to run it for more than .00005 seconds without the main fan running.
Thing is...I bought the mobo/CPU assembled, greased, and tested through so I can't think of why they would test and ship the combo with a faulty fan or short in the board. Is there anything I might've overlooked? (the PSU/Mobo are grounded, connections are all tight and stable)

Hi all,
I've suddenly got major problems with my PC. When I used it yesterday morning it worked as usual with no problems. However, I got home last night and tried to turn it on and there was nothing. No beeps or fans whirring - nothing.

Here's the current spec:
M/B: Asus A7N8X-E
CPU: Athlon 2800XP+
RAM: 512MB
OS: Win 2K Pro
Power supply: 300W
HDD: 120GB Seagate

I've opened it up today and when the power cable is plugged in, a green LED (labelled SB_PWR) on the mobo lights up. From this I'm presuming the power supply is still working. I have unplugged all peripherals, CD drives, HDD etc, but still get nothing when I try to turn it on. The only thing I haven't tried yet is taking out the PCI cards, which I'm going to try in a minute.

When I hit the power switch, one of the case fans SOMETIMES gives a little twitch. The guy at the computer store reckons this is a sign that my CPU has shorted, and that the system is shutting itself down before it even starts as protection. He also tells me Athlon no longer make the XP processors.

So, my question is twofold. Does the computer guy's assessment of the problem sound accurate? I don't have a spare CPU, so I'll have to go to the expense of buying a new one to test this idea. Or could it be something much more basic which I can test before getting the credit cards out?

Secondly, if what he says is right and I do need a new CPU, what's the best option for this mobo? Although the com... Read more

okay here it is. i was swapping cases for my ex. had everything setup in the new case but the motherboard is old there is no documentation and the new case had no docs either but the leads from the powerswitch/hdd light/reset/speakers were well labelled.
BUT...some of the new leads for these had different sizes/no. of holes than the old ones which were connected in the old case.

this threw me and i tried to get them to fit onto the connectors as best i could(the mboard only had the power supply one labelled) and when i powered up alas...something smoked.

the fans went and lights came on but then no boot.

i thought maybe the board was shorting(crappy little spacers with the board) against the case.

but i definitely smelt something burning and couldn't see where it was.

now when i hit the switch there is no boot but the cd drive and the power supply fan works but the fan on the processor doesn't work.

If that does not work plug in the power cord and power up with the new battery installed.

I have a Toshiba Satellite C655D that needs a replacement ac power adapter, when I look it up it says I need:

Laptop AC Adapter: 19 Volts, 75 Watts, 3.95 Amps, 5.5mm x 2.5mm Connector

Laptop AC Adapter: 19 Volts, 65 Watts, 3.42 Amps, 5.5mm x 2.5mm Connector

Someone gave me a new, in the box AC Adapter with USB port, made by Insignia.
The documentation says "converts 120v AC to 3-12v with 1300mA max output."

I realize this is a question not exactly hardware related, but I'm hoping someone knows the answer....I'm afraid to plug it in and fry my laptop

Can I use 45 Watt adapter for dell inspiron 15 5559?? I got the adapter along with the laptop when I bought it. But a warning is displayed on screen prompting me to use 65 Watt adapter... If so why 65 Watt adapter wasn't given with the laptop instead of 45 Watt?

A:Power adapter

The system is designed to support both 45W and 65W adapters - see the specifications here -
When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Could you test with another power adapter if possible?
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point.
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.

I bought a Dynex USB 2.0 4-Port Hub last week and have decided to add an external power supply to power the hub. The short and terse User Manual notes on the final page that a 5Volt / 2.5 Amp Power Adapter may be connected. I called their customer support number and talked to a lady, but her best advice was return to the store and ask there. My experience with this store over the years has been fat chance for this kind of request. Has anyone got a suggestion as to where I can purchase such a USB Power Adapter?

A:USB Hub Power Adapter

Radio Shack would be a good place to start although you might have to get one of their adjustable models. A Google search should also turn up something. Actually I just replaced my D-Link powered USB1 hub with a USB2 model. The old one is just sitting around and it has a 5V 2.4A adapter. If you want it so you can use the adapter just PM me and I'll send it to you.

Right after replacing the case with Corsair 230T, I have been getting random BSOD (please see attached). What happened was I left the extra motherboard stand-offs in place that were meant for mATX board. SO after installing my ATX board into it, it would not power up at all. So as it stands, some pins on the motherboard were shorted and everything seems to work fine right after lifting the motherboard. Also, after removing extra stand-offs everything runs fine, except for the BSOD's.
So my motherboard is dead?

A:Random BSOD's: Motherboard might have been shorted previously.

I am planning on making this project myself but first I have one question. Here is the project I will be making:

It says I need a 12V DC supply for powering the breadboard. When searching up for 12V DC supplies, I only get power supply's that plug into the wrong wall socket (I live in Australia).
Do I need to get something like the article suggests:

Or can I get something such as this:
If the first option is the only possibility, how do I get the plug to go into my wall socket?
Also, how do I get the other end plugged into the breadboard when the product just has a single plug on the end?

A:What type of power adapter do I need?

You can use the Ebay adaptor, the easiest way to get 2 wires is to get a socket that fits the plug, like this one :- and solder 2 wires to that socket.

The circuit at your link uses a 2 wire plug into the breadboard, you would have to get a similar plug OR you could push bare wires into the breadboard.

OR you could cut the plug off to reveal the 2 wires but they will probably be quite thin and may not connect well if pushed into the breadboard holes.

This is a recent problem - a previous adapter broke and now subsequent adapters use 100% CPU and sloooow my laptop.

It's an hp 6720s 13 months old, XP Home, HP 65W power adapter.

Laptop running fine on battery only. Laptop runs fine when battery removed and power adapter is connected. Laptop does not run fine when battery and power adapter connected - 100% CPU.

Also, the charge indicator light no longer works and the power icon does not show that the battery is charging, although it is.

I've updated the BIOS, restored factory power settings and tested the power adapter during startup and have the same prob with the CPU usage.

What could cause the power adapter to use 100% CPU? Please let me know if you need more info, cheers.

Is the small cylinder around the cord about 3" before it enters the laptop some sort of choke/filter?

There is no particular reason for this, either side of the power supply could be lengthened or shortened.

Hi everyone.

I know that this is not really entirely related to a Windows 7 computer and especially to these forums, but I really need some advice on this and it would be great if anyone who has experience in voltage, amps and safety for laptop power adapters would be perfect.

My friend has just traveled down to my house for a week but has foolishly forgot his plug for the power socket on his power adapter. He uses this for his computer. Again unrelated becuase it is an Apple 45W MagSafe2 adapter.

So I was wondering if he could simply use a cord like this one below to plug into the adapter?
The black cord is 2.5A 250V~

The adapter is 100-240V~ 1A

These are both for input.

Any help would be greatly appreciated .

A:Power Adapter Problem

That white 'thing' appears to be for an Apple Macintosh MacBook/MacBook Pro [I have a MacBook Pro] and you might not be able use the black cord due to fit, the V-shaped notch in the black plug would have to let it be inserted. But it probably won't hurt to try as it's still a 110/120Volt source.

The MacBook power adapter also came with a piece that replaced that cord and has the prongs to plug directly into a wall socket/extension cord, maybe it's in his Notebook bag.

I have a 90w power adapter from an older notebook that will work with my HP DV5-1015nr. I transport my notebook between home and office. I'd like to utilize the older power brick, so that I won't need to transport a power brick back and forth. The tips on both adapters, of course, are of a different diameter.      My multi-tester identifies that the tip is hot for both adapters. The problem I have is that the older power brick has two wires: core wire (+) and shield (-), and the newer power adapter has three wires: shield that is connected to the core of tip (+), black that is connected to outer part of cylindrical shaft that must be the ground, and white connected to inner part of cylindrical shaft (also negative?). So do the black and white wires on the newer adapter need to be soldered to the shield on the older one?

A:Wiring for Power adapter?

Just a guess, since it is 90watt, they may have run the extra wire to carry the load, shield is always much larger than center tip wire. Did you measure voltage and ploarity of all three connections with the brick plugged in? Tip is always + and ouside is always - on a HP, not sure what the third is, see if there is any voltage on it, It could also be some sort of sensor wire for the charging system on the mobo. Better to buy another adapter than smoke the motherboard on the lappy taking a chance. If you want to chance it just connect the two wires that are on the center and outside. Leave the 3rd odd one unconnected. probably can be found used for cheap.

A:Power adapter center pin

Sounds like the Centre pin has broken away and lodged itself in the plug. I cannot tell you which is positive and which is negative with regards to the rings on the plug. Because different Manufacturers use different combinations and with that different Voltages too. Generally speaking the outside piece is the male end and the receiving plug is the female -go figure-

My neighbour was given a second-hand computer and asked for my help setting it up.

It is a Dell Optiplex 755 running Win7.

Currently installed graphics is NVidia Quadro FX 3500.

I looked up the service tag and this is not the original card (Original was ATI HD2400XT).

The issue I have is that the FX3500 is an 80W card, with the PCI-E slot having a max of 75W. On booting I get low power warnings from the NVidia card.

The card has a 6 pin PCI-E connection available for the additional power, but the PSU has no PCI-E power cable.

The only free power cables from the PSU are a couple of 15pin SATA cables. I have seen adapter cables for 15pin SATA to 6 pin PCI-E. Are these any good for my situation?

If not, what are the alternatives? New PSU? Different GFX card?

I have a 20 pin motherboard but the power supply I have available has a 24 pin connector. I've read that you can simply plug them together by offsetting the 24 pin one but so far I don't see that working at all (and 'never the twain shall meet', so to speak). I've found adapters but they all say something akin to

'allows you to connect your existing 20 pin power supply to your new 24-pin compatible motherboard'

You can use it the other way around, correct?

A:20 to 24 pin power supply adapter

Some mainboard connectors are 20+4 pins where the 4 pins unsnap from the 20 pins for use with boards with a 20 pin connector. If your power supply doesn't have that feature you would use an adapter such as this.

The Yoga 3 Pro power adapter looks like a normal USB brick, and the cord looks like USB, except with a kink in the connector at the Yoga 3 Pro end. Can I charge my phone or tablet with it?

A:What's with the Yoga 3 Pro power adapter - it's a ...

Yes the Yoga 3 Pro power adapter is a USB charger too!

How does it work?

The special "fool proof" charging cord has two extra pins on the AC adapter end and two extra pins on the Yoga 3 Pro end. The extra pins only make a connection when the fool proof cord is plugged in to the Lenovo charger and the Yoga 3 Pro. When a regular USB cord is plugged into either the charger or the Yoga 3 Pro, it makes a regular USB connection.

Can I charge the Yoga 3 Pro with any USB charger?

No. The Yoga 3 Pro requires 2A at 20V, which is what the provided 40W Lenovo AC adapter supplies.

Can I charge a USB device with the Yoga 3 Pro AC adapter?

Absolutely. In addition to 2A at 20, the Yoga 3 Pro AC adapter supplies 2A at 5.2V (10.4W), enough to charge a phone or tablet. Works for iPad.

Where can I buy spare AC adapters and cords?

AC adapters with cords are sold in the accessories section of the Lenovo store.

Where do I find the part numbers for the AC adapter and cord?

Look for AC Adapters In the PDF Yoga 3 Pro Hardware Maintenance Manual.

What are the USB specs of the Yoga 3 charging port?

It's a USB 2.0 port. It provides enough power to charge an iPhone, but not enough to charge an iPad. If you want to charge an iPad, try the USB 3.0 port on the right of the Yoga 3 Pro.

The Yoga 3 Pro power cable connectors compared with a regular USB connector:

I recently purchased a Del Latitude 7202 Toughbook.
At same time purchased 12V power adapter.
The adapter was shipped separately.  SKU 469-4546.  The power plug did not fit computer.
It is too fat.  Spent 4 hours with tech support and they told me the wrong part was shipped.
They said they would send a replacement.  10 days later I get a package with an HDMI cable in it.
Call support back, was told they would just issue me a credit and I can purchase one online.
I was told I needed part.  450-AAYR.  Web page for that part lists the 7202 as compatible.
It arrived yesterday.  Still doesn't fit.  I am returning it as well.
What is required to get the correct part?

I have a Inspiron 15 3541 touch screen and "misplaced" my power cord and adapter. I'm using a Dell adapter from a different computer, but when I turned on my laptop, I get a message requiring a system or admin password even before it boots up. Is this because of the different adapter? How many pins did my adapter have? What problems does a different adapter create?

A:Power adapter pins

The password that is showing up before your computer boots sounds like there is a BIOS password set on the computer.  Unfortunately if you don't remember that password then you are probably stuck.  You can probably go online and search and see if there is a way to reset BIOS on the laptop and get it to default and remove the password that is set on it.  If there is a hard drive password though then the only way to remove that if you forgot it is to install a new hard drive as the password will follow the drive, not the computer.
Your power supply should have only 1 pin.  Dell used the same adapter for their computers for a while, they come in different wattage though and if you use an adapter that is too low then it may not be able to charge the battery while you use it or at all.  If the plug fits and it is a Dell charger you should be okay to at least get the computer up and running.  If it is a low wattage charger and the setting is set in BIOS (usually is by default) you'll get a message from your computer telling you that the charger isn't powerful enough to charge the battery while in use.

Hi -

First post for me - but what a helpful site!

I have a Linksys WRT54GX, ver. 2, wireless G router to which I have lost the ac power adapter. The manual lists it as a 12 volt DC 1 amp (12VDC 1 A).

I have been to Radio Shack, Best Buy, and numerous electronic outlets, as well as exhaustive searches on the net, as well as contacting Linksys directly (they will not sell one separate! Imagine that for tech support!).

You guessed it - I cannot find one. I even went to my pack rat brother who probably has beat Noah and has collected at least one, if not two of everything on Earth - just in case, as he says!

Anyone have any idea where I can get one of these things?

The ones I have found are 12VDC but .5a, 1.something amps, but none are 1 amp.

Anything anyone can chime in on would be appreciated.

(No there is no USB connection on the router to draw power from the CPU, either! Darn!)

Hi, I know the new Spectre x360 15 inch comes with the new smaller power adapter (similar size to a apple charger) and I wanted to know if the x360 13 inch model also comes with this new smaller adapter?    All the photos and unboxing videos I've seen of the 13 inch have been the larger brick so can anyone tell me if they are still coming with the brick or the new smaller one?   Thanks

Hi All, I am getting a very strange issue with my Lenovo SL 510. When i plug in charging while laptop is on it starts disconnecting power adapter every cople of seconds or some time is 5 second (no consistent behaviour).. i thought it could be my power adapter that is misbehaving. I removed battery and started laptop with ac adapter on. it worked fine no issues at all.  if i turn off laptop and put it under charging it get's fully charged and battery also lasts for couple of hours. so no issue in charging while laptop is turned off.. so that rules out possibility of issues with adapter. The issue is only with laptop  charging when it's turned on. it keeps disconnecting. it is really very annoying as get to hear beep sound Similar to hospital sound :-)

Hi all. I'm semi-reliably informed that my main board is dead.

If my HD survived whatever traumatic event caused the above, I'd like to attempt to salvage some of the data from it. It's a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 80GB ATA/133, 3.5 series.

So far, Ive found this adapter which seems like what I'll need to connect the HD to a laptop via USB in order for it to show up as a removable drive from which I can pull files. Note: I don't want to open the laptop & connect directly vice the DVDRW as it's still under warranty.

So, my question is ... what's the power source on the adapter for? Is it in case you want the connected drive to function as a working drive as opposed to just a storage device?

(sorry, no doubt this is a really dumb one, hardware's just not my thing )

Any advice on this specifically, or any general comments on the likelihood of success of this operation, gratefully received. TIA,

I made a service call today to set up a new Dell workstation. It had no PATA drives, only SATA, and no 4-pin molex connectors on the power supply. We need to connect his 500-Gigabyte PATA (aka old IDE) disk. I have already installed an IDE (PATA) controller.

I cannot find a power adapter that will take me from the new SATA power supply to a 4-pin molex.

Anyone know where I might find one?

The section of my adapter has frayed near the point where it plugs in and I have to practically baby it to keep it charging. This is a huge problem, especially considering that I'm planning to go off to college soon. There's so many counterfeits on the market, and I'm afraid that I may get one that'll just give me grief. In middle of the school year I may not even have enough to buy a new cord, so this is a big deal for me. Yes, I have looked it up and what came up were forums about how to avoid counterfeits, which served to confuse me. While they recommend that buyers should avoid "marketplace" retailers like Amazon, Sears and Ebay, they don't exactly say where exactly to go. There's a bunch of shady websites besides these retailers and I'm not really finding anything too solid at a more legitmate distribution channel...  Of course I'm willing to spend some money. It's just that the 40-70$ price tag I've been seeing for the cord on relatively trustworthy sites seems steep, especially considering that I got the laptop (power cord incl.) for 200$ a few years back. It hasn't given me any trouble, but it's hard to justify spending ~25% of its original value on a cord. I want to spend something from 20 to 30$.  Thanks for the help!

I need a new AC power adapter for my monitors. I have three Acer S243HL LED monitors, and the power adapters basically exploded a few months ago (I heard a loud pop, followed by the monitor just turned off). I tested it with a working power adapter (the one I'm using now for my only functional monitor), and the monitor itself is fine. The power adapter is not.

Anyways, to prevent this happening in the future, could someone recommend to me a high quality power adapter which won't short out on me?

The power adapter that I'm using looks like this

A:Looking for a high quality AC power adapter

I think there is no such thing as a high end power adapter, you could buy one with goldplated pins and from a quality brand, but the thing is not to let them get very hot and take good care of them, apart from that i dont know any

I have recently rescued a 15 inch viewsonic lcd monitor from being trashed at my work. I did not find the ac adapter for it and would like to use one of my old PSU's to run it. Since the power requirements for the monitor are 12.0V 3Amp, I assume I can just use the 12.0V rail on a standard PSU and attach a tip to it (which I have from a broken universal wall-wort). Will this work? Can't I use any power supply/ac adapter that is capable of supplying 3Amps or more of current as long as it is 12.0V? Thanks in advance.

BTW...I did try a duracell battery charger ac adapter that ran at 12.0V and 2.5A for a short period (as to not damage the ac adapter) and found that the monitor works fine (just has a little fraying on the VGA cable). So I know it is worth converting a supply for it.

A:Use a Comp Power Supply as an ac adapter?

A 12-volt supply capable of 3 amps or more is all you need. Just be sure the polarity is right.

I have a 12-port network switch in my shop that's been running off a 5-volt leg of an old computer power supply for several years. At the time, the manufacturer wanted as much for the power supply as I paid for the entire switch and power supply the year before. Old computer power supplies are plentiful around here.

I just bought a wireless highpower adapter since my room is so far away from my router/modem.

I used the software that came along with my adapter to scan the surrounding network, but it didn't pick up on my net work no matter how many time I scan it. But it does pick up a few of my neighbors' wifi signal.

But I could connect completely fine with my laptop itself.

My internet setup is as follows:

Internet > wireless > 4G router > wireless > Main Router > PC (wired) and other devices (wireless)

As you can see the Main Router (which I connect all of my devices to, because it's faster in terms of internal network speeds and has a longer WI-FI range) connects to the 4G router (which is the access point to the Internet) wirelessly.

I want both routers to be wired. However, the 4G router has only a single Micro USB port which also acts as a power supply and the Main Router has no USB ports.

So what sort of (Micro) USB to Ethernet adapter should I buy (suggestions from experience welcome)?

Is it possible to transfer power from the Main Router through its Ethernet port?

If I use an adapter with a separate power supply, will it supply the 4G router through the Micro USB port?

Main Router: Tenda W308R
4G Router: Is an Infomark Biscuit Mini provided and customized by my ISP.

What are your thoughts on this little thingamahjig?

Before officially launching its Intel 6 Series chipset-based motherboards, EVGA has decided to introduce the Power Boost, a little internal adapter that will provide more watts to your PCI-Express bus and thus improve overall system stability.

more at source

A:EVGA adapter provides more power to your PCIe bus

I'm not sure. I had thought that was what the power connectors on the PCI-E devices (ex: graphics card) were for.

I can also see someone possibly frying their motherboard if this adapter was connected incorrectly in the PCI-E slot.
