Add Memory to Notebook?

Q: Add Memory to Notebook?

Greetings to All:

I have a 5-year old notebook (Dell). It is still behaving well, but because it only has 64MB of RAM, there are some new applications that it will not run. Also, it takes forever to download some large files.

My questions are:

1) Is it even possible to add memory to a notebook PC?

2) If it is possible, would I see significant improvement, re running larger applications and/or faster downloads?

3) (Assuming that the answers to 1 & 2 are "yes"), How much memory should I add? 256? 512?

Thanking you very much in advance.

WillyT

Bought new notebook a month ago. Went to update windows 10 with ANNIVERSARY UPDATE and told by computer there is not enough memory to do it. There is nothing stored on computer to delete to gain memory!  What can I do to get more memory? Thank You

A:new notebook does not have enough memory

Hi, The following link shows specs of your computer:     http://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c04941651 Probably you are talking about storage (ie HDD), not memory (ie RAM). It is a very basic computer, buy then forget, not upgradable in many ways. My suggestion: use the SD card to download files to it, then install from (not to) there. Regards.

I have just bought 4GB memory to add to my Hewlett Packard HP15 TS Notebook but I can't find a video showing exactly how to do it. The ones I've seen so far look as if you have practically take the laptop to bits to install, but they are not my model. Where can I find a video which will clearly show it? Is it just the back removal that's needed for my model. Thank you.

A:add memory to HP 15 TS Notebook

The bad news is the memory modules are next to the CPU so you are going to have to take the keyboard off to renew memory.

Hello to all,

I have HP4530s laptop with core i-5 CPU-2410M with 4 GB RAM and Radeon Graphics.

In basic System information I see this:
Installed RAM 4GB (2.69 Usable). Does this mean that some of the RAM memory is shared for VGA or not?

How to check whether RAM memory is used for VGA and how much memory is available for VGA??

Thank you

A:Checking VGA memory on notebook

I'm assuming you have a HP ProBook 4530s laptop that's running Windows 7.

Right-click an empty space on the screen, then click "Personalize", then click "Display" - or - go to Control Panel - Display.

Click "Adjust resolution" or "Change display settings, then click "Advanced settings".

Select the "Adapter" tab.

The amount of dedicated and shared RAM for the display device will be listed.

------------------------------------------------------

That model laptop supports up to 8 GB of DDR3 PC3-10600 RAM.

If it's running the 64-bit version of Windows 7, you might consider adding more RAM.

8 GB (4 GB X 2)

Hey everyone! My paw says you guys sure know your stuff !!! I've got a Gateway MX8711 laptop with an FSB of 533mhz. I would like to upgrade the memory. Already has 1GB in two slots (2X512). I want to purchase a 1GB for one slot and holdover a 512mb already installed. Totalling 1.5GB.
The best I can make out, is that the memory already installed is DDR2 at 533MHz PC2-4200, 200p SODIMM. A local big box store has 1GB DDR II PC2-5300 (appears to be 667mhz) for $45.

I've got 2 question areas . First:

1. Can/Should I use the PC2-5300 in the laptop?
2. If so, can I/should I mix it with the PC2-4200?

I don't want to screw the computer up.

Second:
Can I install the modules myself of go pro?
Any help is really appreciated!!

I have the Acer 5570z and it came stock with 1GB of memory, and I did my research and the User Guide says it can take up to 4GB using two soDIMM modules (dual channel support) so I bought a 4GB pack (2 2GB sticks) of memory by corsair with matching specs and speed of memory that came stock with the PC (DDR2 PC2-5300). But when I installed both memory sticks, my PC turned on just fine, but did not load anything, the screen just stayed black. But when I removed one of the sticks of memory, the PC started up and booted the OS. I've tried everything I could to get 4GB out of this PC, but I'm thinking this PC can't handle 4GB of memory, but then why would the User Guide say it can?

I have Samsung 4Gb DDR3L 1600Mhz RAM (M471B5173DB0) installed in my laptop - HP 15-r063tu Notebook. I want to upgrade the same with a Corsair 4Gb DDR3L 1600Mhz RAM (CMSO4GX3M1A1600C11), as the exact Samsung RAM is not available and is also about 40% more expensive than the Corsair / Transcend ones. Will my laptop motherboard &/ BIOS accept the above Corsair RAM alongwith the current Samsung one, or do I need to necessarily buy the exact Samsung make & model of RAM ? As the tech specs of the above Samsung & Corsair RAMs match, I assume they should work fine together, but am told that sometimes the motherboard &/ BIOS doesn't allow RAMs of different makes to be installed, even if their specs match. Would help if someone can confirm on this, so I can buy accordingly. Thanks a lot.

I bought a customized HP Pavilion notebook directly from HP. It came with an Intel T7500 2.2 GHz processor that runs a 800 MHz FSB. It also came with 2Gb RAM (which I believe is PC2 5300 DDR2 RAM in the form of two 1GB chips). The system has a maximum of 4Gb memory, so I want to match 4Gb Ram (in the form of two 2Gb chips) to the CPU.

Is there any reason why PC 6400 DDR2 800 Mhz 2 Gb chips would not work in this system? I bought two of these chips from newegg.com (they were OCZ chips) and when I installed them I was unable to boot the machine. The PC runs fine with the slower DDR2 PC2 5300 chips that run at 667 MHz.

Hey everyone,I just bought a new notebook a few days ago and it is running very slow, it can't handle more than a few Google Chrome tabs open at a time. Was gonna take it back to the shops for a refund but I've already installed everything on here. 'System and Compressed Memory' is holding up between 300-600mb of memory, this is 8GB however my laptop is still runnning slow. I haven't installed much software on this and there is 2TB of storage so I have no idea how it's running so slow. The CPU varies between 10-25% however the memory is 60%+ even with just Chrome open. Most bizarre. I've checked that there's not any virus scans or downloads running. I'm running dual screens so not sure if that slows things down. Can someone help me please.

I have an HP Pavilion xf125 notebook, and would like to upgrade the memory. It has 384mb now. I don't know how much memory it will hold, or if it's even upgradable anymore since it's so old (2002 I think). The reason I want to upgrade is because it crashes pretty easy. I was thinking more memory would help solve this problem. Any advice would help... but no need to suggest I buy a new computer because I really don't use it all that much to justify the cost of a new one.

I also need a new battery for it, but don't really want to spend a lot... so looking for an inexpensive one. Not sure it's possible to find such a thing anymore. Yes, I have looked on HP's website and they don't have either memory or batteries for it.

Thanks for any helpful advice you can offer.

Hello everybody. This seems like an excellent board, and I thank you for all your help.

I have an Acer Aspire 1681LCi with 512MB PC2700 (2x256) 200pin Sodimms. The CPU is the Centrino Pentium M 1.5Ghz supposedly with 400MHz FSB (4x100). I would like to add more RAM to it, but have three questions:

1. Should I just add more DDR333 or replace it all with DDR400?
2. Should there be a performance benefit to this?
3. Why would Acer install DDR333 into a 400MHz FSB?

Any suggestions would be helpful on this matter.
Thanks!

no performance benefits at all since you can't overclock a notebook. Just get the speed you are supposed to get (DDR2700 probably since you're using that already) or whatever is closest...

Hello Guys! I'm concerned about a question i was recently asked and couldn't find an answer, so here it is:

An HP Laptop needs to be upgraded from 512MB Ram to 2x1GB RAM, but the Laptop specs say it will only take PC2-5300 and the Laptop owner just purchased a PC2-5400 from OCZ and he is concerned about if it will be compatible or not with his Laptop. this one:

http://shop1.outpost.com/product/53...UnhBzdT+w**.node2?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

vs

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145157

I did some research but I was unable to find out any useful information, could you help us understand where is the difference between this spec and if it will be compatible or not, I'm confused, pins are the same (200) speed the same (667Mhz) CL 5-5-5-15.

HP tech support were trying to sell their owns for 99 buck a GB saying its only 5300 compatible.

All input highly appreciate it, Thanks!

A:Notebook memory 5300 vs 5400

I don't believe there is such a thing as PC5400 ram, it was probably a typo on the site's behalf & he purchased PC5300 ram. If his laptop supports SO-DIMM modules (which is most likely), he won't have any problems with the ram he purchased.

I guess he'll know for sure when he tries it.

A:High physical memory usage on new HP notebook

One thing you could do is determine if you have a problem or not. When all the physical memory is used and swapping is needed you suffer a performance hit. When some physical memory is just gathering cobwebs you have no (immediate) problem. Windows 7 is pretty good at memory management. It will sometimes keep stuff in memory just because the space is available and maybe you will gain performance by not having to load whatever it is.

Another thing is to use Task Manager to see if there are any memory hogs.

Hello,

I currently have an Acer Travelmate 529ATX Notebook, which uses an ATI Rage Mobility video chip, with 8MB of RAM.

Now, I know this isn't especially powerful when compared to newer chips - so here's my question:
Is there any way of enhancing the memory or performance of this chip to allow me to play certain games? Nothing fast, mind you - as a case in point, I wanted to play the game "Syberia", which gives as a requirement - "3D video card, minimum 16MB of RAM".

Am I stuck? The computer itself has 256MB of SDRAM.

Thanks very much for your help...

I wanted to upgrade my memory in my Compaq Presario 2100 Notebook. I had the original 256 mb but was sharing with video driver so only had 192. In the specs it indicated I could upgrade to 1 gb. The store I visited did not have a 1 gb so I purchased 2 512mb. It is only recognizing 1 of them. What I bought was 2 - KVR333SO/512R PC2700 CL2.5 200 pin SODIMM. The salesman at the store said adding a 2700 instead of a 2100 would be ok because it would drop down to what it was needed. Is this not true? Could this be the reason it will not recognize both cards for a total of 1024? Thanks,

Niece

Currently my notebook has the standard 4GB of memory using the HP provided Hynix HMT451S6AFR8A SoDIMM, 12800 DDR3L-1600, 1.35V. I have been looking to replace it with either Kingston HyperX, HX316LS9IB2_8, DDR3L-1600 (2x4GB) kit or the Crucial Ballistix Sport CT6278900, DDR3L-1600 (2x4GB) kit. Both have 9-9-9 timings. My question is will the memory with lower timings and the density of the chips work on my HP 2000-2d37cl notebook with an AMD A6-5200 CPU? Also I was curious about postings in the forums where persons had lost the Admin or other passwords on theirHP 2000 notebooks or they purchased a used notebook that had a unknown password. They provide the codes from the error on screen and the reply's from techs allowed them to get past this and reset their systems. I hope I never have that problem, however where exactly are the techs getting the codes from? The memory is upgradeable to 16 gigs of DDR4-2133 in 2 slots or 2 x 8 gig.  It can take an M.2 mSSD drive, but only as an alternative to a regular 2.5 inch hard drive. There is a single bay and port and which drive you install depends on the adapter used.  HP has not yet posted a Manual for the 13-u100 series but the Manual for the 13-u000 series is available and shows access to the M.2 slot and memory. Manual  See pages 42 and 56. Memory upgrade is particularly challenging as it requires removal of the motherboard.  Post back with any questions.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Recently I was doing a research about a memory update for my G42-365LA Notebook, and in many websites, including the Netbook User?s Manual, I found that this Notebook could be upgraded up to 8 Gb of memory. So I bought two RAM memories of 4 Gb each one (SoDIMM DDR3 PC3-10600 @ 1333 MHz) according to researched specifications. But the thing is that when I installed them I couldn't enter into the OS, it sent me to the Windows Error Recovery window directly, and whichever option I choose it reboots and it keeps doing that. Well, I tried installing just one memory alone and the result is different, it came up with the BSOD giving me different errors each time I reboot the Netbook. These errors are:

BAD_POOL_HEADER
PFN_LIST_CORRUPT
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

I?ve tried to reinstall the OS with memories installed, but the result is the same
.

My Notebook is a HP G42-365LA; Windows 7 Home Premium x64 Service Pack 1; Intel Core i3 CPU M 370 @2.4 GHz

I don't know if I was cheated by the manufacturer website and/or the others websites, that's why I need your help.

P.S. When I installed just one memory module, I can see The Windows intro logo, but just for two seconds or so. And I tried to install "Ubuntu 12.04 desktop amd x64" with just one 4 Gb memory module inserted and everything was good, but it wasn't with the two cards installed.

I just attempted to upgrade my memory with a 1GB module from Kingston.
Module = 1GB PC2700 333 MHz KVR333SC/1GR

The Notebook has 2 memory bays. 1 memory bay is accessible to the user. I replaced a 256MB module with the new 1GB module. I started the computer up and it booted just fine and pulled up my desktop screen. Then I received the blue screen with a message that Windows was shutting down. I removed the module and re-seated it and tried again. Now it only gets to the Windows screen and then goes to the blue screen. It looked so simple - HELP!!

I am just wondering if anyone might happen to have any ideas as to why a Toshiba S4547 Notebook computer would have problems booting up with two 2 GB memory sticks. I bought both of them directly from Toshiba in 2008 and up until recently I have not had any problems with the memory at all. Now I am having a problem where it will only boot with one stick in, but not with both.

I thought that something was funny when my computer started locking up on me and my first thought was that it was something in Windows vista. I'm testing the memory sticks right now to see if I can find a problem with either of the sticks, but as of yet I don't have the results back as of yet.

I did have the motherboard replaced by Toshiba in 2008 and since then have not had any problems. I'm not really sure at the moment as to what could be causing this issue because when I take either chip and insert it into Dimm 0 it seems to work without a problem, but when I put the second one in on Dimm 1 it then doesn't seem to want to boot up to the screen showing the bios information at all and that is really making me wonder if there might be a problem with the motherboard.

I bought the computer brand new in May of 2007 and until I made a mistake with a memory card and screwed upt the motherboard that I had to pay for out of my own pocket I wasn't having any problems except for not having enough physical memory or hard drive space. Since the motherboard was replaced by Toshiba in 2... Read more

I recently purchased and used a memory stick, which worked fine. After using it though, my disc drive and xD card reader do not work (these are the only "drives" I ever used prior to the memory stick).

When I put a disc in the disc drive it sounds like it's reading and the light on the disc drive door flickers as if it's reading, but nothing changes on the computer. I don't think there really is anything physically wrong with the disc drive because it sounds and acts like it always did when it worked. Prior to the memory stick I'd always used the disc drive for copying to DVDs and CDs, or for reading from them.

When I put an xD memory card in the xD memory drive/slot nothing happens. Prior to the memory stick I'd always used the xD drive/slot to read my camera's memory card.

I've tried rebooting and then also rebooting with the boot disc--at this point I'm willing to loose my data if I can get my disc drives working again. Obviously I'd be scared to use the memory stick again unless I can be advised on how to get everthing to work without one causing issues for the other as I believe is the case.

This is my thought (bear in mind I'm not a computer wiz): I think the memory stick somehow did an override on the drivers that run the other dirves.

Any help is greatly appreciated, a solution and lunch is on me!!!

A:Notebook Not Recognizing Disc And Xd Drives After Using A New Memory Stick

One thing you could try is to go into the Device Manager and delete the DVD drive and xD memory drive. Then reboot your computer and Windows should automatically recognise them as new hardware and install them.

I bought a new notebook and upgraded from windows 8.1 standard to pro so I can rdp into it.
I use rdp because it's easier to connect this way and take advantage of my desktop screens and keyboard/mouse.
When I am connected via RDP, the logonui.exe process takes more and more memory until the machine is unusable. I kill the process (or process tree) and it re-starts climbing in memory consumption once again.
It only happens when connected via RDP from my windows 7 Pro desktop.

A problem has recently developed with my Envy notebook.   About 2 weeks ago my entire wireless network began slowing down when on it.   Noticeable on all devices.    When my provider came out, checked and tweaked some issues it appeared to be ok.   I went on with my daughers HP laptop and was drawing 20-24 mbps all over the house. When I reconnected mine to the system I was only pulling 6, 3, 5, up and down.   It doesn't start right away but after a few minutes.   So I put my duaghers right next ot mine and low and behold, when I ran her's it pulled 3 - 6 also.   So I turned my wi-fi off and hers' popped right back up.   I have also tried this with an old XP mini, my i-pads etc.   As soon as mine gets on the network the speed crashes.    This also happens with no one else home and no other devies conncted. I have downloaded the latest up to date Intel driver for this network adapter and it hasn't changed anything. Any ideas?

Bill_Ving Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about wireless networking poor performance and wanted to help. My immediate guess is that you might have mixed-mode networking going on.  This happens when you have two different PCs networking in two different modes -- one using "G", the other using "N".  The wireless router (or access point) can optimize performance for either mode, but not for both.  So, the "G" mode drags down the performance of the "N" mode PC, but even worse, with the router set for mixed modes, it performs more slowly than with either PC connected by itself. Here are some other troubleshooting steps you can try: HP PCs - Troubleshooting Wireless Network and Internet (Windows 8) | HPģ Customer SupportGood Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------Please click "Accept As Solution" on the post that solves your issue to help others find the solution. Please click the Thumbs-Up symbol on the left of the Reply button to say thanks fopr my help.========================================================================

I made a Google notebook to keep the minutes of a meeting my business partners and I held last weekend. I made them all collaborators on the notebook so they could all make any changes or annotations they felt necessary. However, when they go to access this notebook they are prompted for a password.

There is nowhere (at least that I can find) to even choose to password protect the notebook let alone change the password. I'm pretty confused as to what password the notebook could be. The only thing I can think of is that it's asking for the password to my gmail account, which I don't really want to be handing out. Any ideas on this one gang?

When I had switched it on again, I used Firefox to go to the Techsupport Forum. I followed the instructions to download dds.scr and began running it. Then the notebook froze again. My wife has a two-year-old Samsung notebook. Recently when she unplugged it the machine cut off, even though the battery said 79% charged (it wouldn't charge any further). I figured that the battery was bad so I bought another one from Amazon.

This one charges to 100% percent and does exactly the same thing. I'm perplexed but think there's something going on with the motherboard that won't let it use battery juice, even if Windows 8.1 says it's 100% charged.

I've tried the hold the power button down for 1 min with the battery out trick to no avail.

Any ideas? I'm stumped and think I might need to get her another notebook.

Thanks, Robert

New here and so I hope that I am posting in the correct place.
My new notebook an M50-MX5 was in the warranty depot as we thought it had a dvd burning problem, however that was not the case; it was the media.

Anyway before it was sent into the toshiba warranty depot the level 2 tech phone support said to get the computer to be like it was when I unboxed it 2 days earlier, this was last month.
And so to my frustration all of my programs were removed, however before doing this the software techie at the office Ghosted it to my Western Digital Storage Unit and then sent it off to the Warranty Depot.

While it was in the shop I used my 3 yr old toshiba satellite 2410 which I am now typing on at this moment.
I was finally able to get the software tech from the office to reGhost my new toshiba M50 on this past Saturday and left it with him for a couple of hrs and then returned to pick it up as there was not much in the way of programs on it and so it wouldn't take long to Ghost the Images back.

Well, in my Western Digital Storage unit are Ghosts of this 3 year old satellite that I am presently using.
After the techie got my Restore Disk installed and tried to reGhost the image onto the New M50, it crashed.

He was using the wrong Ghost, he was using the one that was from this unit???
I was not happy, especially after he claimed that he now had it Ghosted with the proper Image and I tried it out and it was very sloooooow to Boot. He said it was my Norton 2006.

Something you might want to try (it's a pita) is a repair of windows - this may fix some of the slowness issues you're seeing. The install program he's talking about is probably the U3 component of many larger USB pen drives. I think it's on most of Sandisk's newer large drives. A repair of windows might also take care of this. I seriously doubt that putting the wrong image on the machine and then putting another image on could do any damage to the machine itself - the folks here at my job do it all the time.

I know the question is awkward. So hopefully, I can explain it.

Say that I have a 500 GB external hard drive. But as it turns out, there's only 465 GB according to it and my computer. Why isn't there 500 Gb, but rather only 465? This also applies to mp3 players like iPods.

Why is this?

Can I do something to get back the "hidden" memory?

Hi,

I am helping my parents troubleshoot their computers.  My feeling is that they are both infected with the same virus/trojan but I can find it or figure out what is going on.

The each have identical laptops and both are experience identical problems.  Both are running Avast! and both systems are not turning up any discovered viruses or trojans during scans.  I am on the verge of completely refronting both of their laptops and am really hoping I can avoid having to do that.  I suspected that maybe they were both infected with "poweliks" but the below FRST shows (at least I think so) that neither are infected with that trojan.  I am now thinking its a memory leak on some recent driver/app update - but either trojan or memory leak, I am not finding it.

Symptoms:
After a clean reboot, within 24 to 48 hours both systems begin to get very sluggish, both audio and video starts to skip and lag, both mice bounce around like crazy when trying to move the pointer.  After about 72 hours the laptops simply freeze to the point that they have to pull the batteries to get them to shut off.

I had my Dad run FRST on his computer, below are the results:

It seems that I've been getting low memory issues ever since upgrading to Win10, but I'm not 100% certain if thats the issue. I thought about uprading to 16gb ram, but I'd like to know if theres some other fix for this. I can't multitask as I used to be able to. Sometimes problems occur just running 8 tabs on chrome and a game(Blade and Soul). The numbers just don't seem to add up.

A:High Memory Usage/ Low Memory Popup on Win10 8gb Laptop

Hello svader55 Welcome to the Ten Forums!

On the first impression I would have to suspect the problem is with the upgrade itself where you might end needing to see a Clean Install of 10. First however you can try a few things out to see if this is only a minor glitch. On an older 7 model by HP the upgrade seen last summer was a disaster waiting to happen which I had enticipated and saw an immediate clean install to follow! Of after going from the 32bit 7 Home Premium to 10 Home x86 I subsequently changed that with a second fresh install the 64bit Windows.

The initial tool would be the System File Checker you would run from the Command prompt(admin) option when right clicking on the Start button. You simply scroll down to that option to see the new window open up. At the dos like prompt you then simply type in "sfc /scannow" and press enter to get the tool underway.

The tool will then scan all the important system files and if finding one or more corrupt or missing will often be able to replace them but not all unfortunately from cab files tucked away on the local drive. With previous versions the rec for having the Windows dvd in the driver was made in case the SFC had to extract something from the Windows media there if the problem was more involved. This is why the suggestion for the possible need to see a fresh clean install of 10 is being made here.

Unfortunately buggy upgrades are all too common regardless of which version is being upgraded over. But you li... Read more

To start, I have Windows 7, on Sony Vaio laptop.

I have been working on the issues with the malware removal team, but now machine looks clean, I am still having issues.

When starting the computer and going to the task manager, I can watch explorer.exe start at about 18K memory usage and then grow constantly until it is running with almost all of the computer's physical memory after about seven min. I cannot get the context menu to show up after a few min by right clicking on anything.

I had been experiencing "freezing" while playing Eden Eternal (an online role playing game) before that, which made me consider malware and seek help here at BleepingComputer. The freezing has ended, last time I played on that machine at least, but now there seems to be some issue with the explorer.exe taking all of the memory. I haven't been using the machine since I don't trust that there's not something running in the background that shouldn't be.

In resource monitor there were "connections" that had "-" for both the name and the PID, but I don't know if that was the malware of if that's normal somehow?

Issue with explorer.exe seems to be limited to only one user account, and not the other one. That is to say that if I log on one of the other accounts explorer.exe behaves normally, as far as memory usage.

After my new build froze up during boot up into Windows 8, I tried to run Windows 8's built-in Windows Memory Diagnostic, extended setting, but it got stuck at 21% of 1st pass (10% overall) after running it overnight (at least 12 hours). I had 4x4GB memory modules, and re-ran this test with only one stick in different slots, all with the same result: it would quickly get to 10% overall complete, then apparently get stuck there. However I noted that I could still access F1 options when it got to 10% complete, so it wasn't frozen, but the system became extremely slow, with the screen displaying text one word at a time.

Some ideas on how to isolate the problem? I wish I could just return both the motherboard and the memory to the store, but there may be a restocking fee involved with the motherboard unless it's defective.

My parts are:
Intel Core i7-3770K
MSI Z77A-GD65
Corsair Vengeance 4x4GB DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) model CMZ16GX3M4A1600C9

Other information/symptoms:
- I can not run memtest at bootup either by using a DVD/CD or USB key. The motherboard's boot code indicate that it keeps trying to detect the device (DVD drive or USB key) and then gives up. Maybe memtest isn't compatible with this hardware, or I am not configuring it properly, or there are some hardware problems here.
- The keyboard sometimes did not work during boot up, such as when attempting to select the USB key to boot into memtest (attaching a USB keyboard worked, but I still couldn't get memtest to run)... Read more

The computer is a 2001 or 2002 Dell Rev. A03, It won't load windows and I can't seem to access any boot menu. I have not made any changes to the computer's hardware.

I have windows 8 on a Lenovo desktop PC with an AMD A4 5000 APU 1.5 GHZ., 4 GB ram.
I downloaded a game called Rohan Blood feud a month ago and every so often this common error comes up after clicking my character after I log in. memory 0x77 at referenced memory cannot be read. the error itself is hit and miss, sometimes it happens sometimes it doesn't. I have narrowed it down to three possibilities. Game guard the hacking prevention system built into the game is not compatible, not having enough ram to process the game request at the time i try to run the game or There might be an issue with AMD catalyst control system being out of date and is interfering with my game. Is there anything I can do besides uninstalling and re-installing the game? I have done this 3 times and it is only a temporary fix since the error is back after 2 game plays.

So I've had this problem for a few months with my thinkpad x220, win7 home premium 64 bit. I used ccleaner, run memtest86 multiple times, chkdsk multiple times, sfc scan multiple times, none that helped. Sfc always detects errors but always cannot fix some of them. I have mse, avast, and malwarebytes and scanned them with absolutely no results. I've run rootkit scanners with no results.

Basically after a few hours the memory use rises up to ~95% out of my 8gb, with absolutely no intensive processes running. I'll attach rammap and processexplorer screenshots. I know this is not "normal" behavior because once my ram goes over 85% the system slows down to where I can't end tasks, open new programs, even things like deleting a file take minutes. Once it reaches 90 or 95, my screen starts flashing black(kind of like if you blink fast). I have to hard restart every time this happens. This is not normal, I've had "experts" on other forums tell me its win7 using the ram to its greatest. Its not, As soon as I restart and open my usual programs(browser, steam, openoffice, winamp, utorrent) my ram is at around 30 or 40 percent. If I leave the same programs open, and just leave it on for ~4 hours the ram gets to 90% and my screen starts flashing and I have to reboot.

If you look at the rammap and process explorer shots, the most ram intensive programs are chrome and firefox, but they only use ~500mb each. Everything else is only 50-100mb and do not add up to the 7... Read more

First I recommend uninstalling Avast then we could go from there . Using Revo Uninstaller

Click on the app inside RevoUnistaller and choose uninstall
Click on Yes to agree you want to uninstall
If you get the builtin Uninstaller for the app use that and once you're done click Finish
Back inside RevoUninstaller click on Next
Let RevoUninstaller scan for left over registry keys . Click on Select All and choose Delete .
Once done click on Next.
Let the left over files and folders be locates then Click on Select All then click Delete then Next and you should be done .

Hello,

I've been experiencing sluggish performance, browsers were laggy and non responsive after having many tabs.

I found that the solution to improve performance was to change Virtual Memory values and disable "paging file size" for all drives.

Now the computer performance is amazing, everything responds properly but now I'm getting error messages of low memory and getting crashes. A few minutes ago the computer crashed to a black screeen.

Here are the values I have right now in Virtual Memory, what else should I do to stop these crashes? I already tried a few different values but the problem still persists.

Any suggestions?

Hi - running patch current Windows 8.1, and am having an ongoing but not always constant issue regarding how much memory I have available to me on any given boot of Windows.
I have 32 GB of memory installed on the computer, and yet almost 17.3 GB of that is not available to me, and is shown as Hardware Reserved when I look at the Physical Memory in the Resource Monitor.
I have validated the memory is error free through multiple runs of Memtest, have removed memory strips and blown out any possible dust from memory slots, and SOMETIMES, it properly will show me around 30.4 GB available, however most boots it is showing pretty
consistently that 17.3 GB is flaged as Hardware Reserved.

I did some searching, and have tried some of the suggestions, such as making sure the Maximum Memory box is not checked in MSCONFIG, and have also tried editing ClearPageFileAtShutdown in the Registry to change it from the default value of '0' to a
new value of '1'.  Nothing has worked thus far.
I DO need access to as much of that 32 GB of memory as possible, due to this computer using huge amounts of memory as a Digital Audio Workstation, recording music with huge volumes of samples loaded fully into memory.  Performance suffers greatly when
half of what is installed is not available.
I have also looked in the BIOS for any ways to adjust video memory and memory mapping and neither exists in the BIOS at all for me to try anything with.  The CPU happens to be an AMD ... Read more

A:RAM fails Windiag Memory test, crashes Memory 86+

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Your problem is almost certainly caused by faulty ram.

The fact that memtest86+ is reporting ram errors, means your ram is bad.

One of your minidumps crashes with memory corruption.

Try one new stick of ram, and test your system.

The other three minidumps crash with Windows system file errors, but this can be attributed to faulty ram.

Also, one minidump crashes at SYMEvent.SYS=Symantec Event Library.

This is a known issue on some machines/configurations.

Turning off the live updates can sometimes solve this. Otherwise try using a different security product.

After having a busy couple of months building computers for friends and others, I noticed that ?after construction? problems seemed to centre around computers that had two sticks of memory.

The memory I installed was the same (two sticks ordered at the same time eg two 512meg sticks). In one case, not yet knowing that the memory may be to blame and going through the endless process of component substitution, I replaced the two 512meg sticks with a matched pair from my own computer (my computer has dual channel RAM and I had two matched sets installed, 2 gig total).

Problem solved. I also noticed that memory read errors disappeared from my home computer at the same time (windows server 2003/gigabyte 8KNXP Ultra 64/3.2 gig Prescott).

I had also noted that memory read errors never occur after my computer has been switched on for a day or two eg it has been constantly on for weeks now and no memory read errors after the first few hours.

So here is my conclusion ? for single channel RAM, always get matched pairs anyway and enjoy a crash free environment;
For dual channel with more than one set of RAM, try swapping one pair. Alternatively, try leaving the computer on continuously. You can switch the monitor off and leave the computer idling, or better still, donate your spare cycles to a good cause (eg SETI).

In Sum:
The faster the RAM, the more critical the matching even in single channel systems. Leaving the computer on may in itself facilitate matchin... Read more

Hello all. New member here. I have had an issue with my PC since I "upgraded" to windows 8.1 earlier this year that is driving me batty. Unfortunately, I upgraded the hardware (motherboard, CPU, and RAM) at the same time, so I can't rule out a hardware issue completely. The issue stuck around despite a total hard disk wipe and reinstall from scratch.

I'm a relative noob as far as this sort of troubleshooting, and I'm really not sure how to proceed. My normal modus operandi has been to simply wipe and start over if I ran into serious enough issues, but that did not work this time. Months of google searches have not really yielded any progress, so I thought it could not hurt to ask here.

So the problem. Basically, the longer the system runs, the more memory it uses. Eventually it freezes up, and itf you let it alone long enough after this starts, it will finally reboot itself. Doing anything intensive hastens the process of memory drain, basically the harder it works, the faster it happens. If I am using the PC hard, it only takes a couple hours to burn through all 1 GB. If I am away for days with nothing but background processes running, it takes a few days, but it eventually crashes and reboots.

The only thing that might be slightly out of the ordinary for most users is the fact that I use the PC as my TV and DVR through Windows Media Center and the use of a Silicondust HD Homerun Prime cablecard tuner. Other than that, it's pretty basic stuff on my... Read more

Now i'm using windows 10 but I had this problem also when using windows 8.1pro.
The windows 81.pro I have the original dvd here and I tried few times to make clean install.
Also windows 10 I got it free online and the same problem.

For example now i'm using Edge I have two windows opened in one I have 10 tabs open and in the other I have like 20 tabs open. But the problem happen also with two windows and 6 tabs open in each one.

The problem is that once I start Edge or Chrome on windows 81.pro or windows 10 I see in Task Manager that the memory usage is about 60%. Then after some times without doing anything special the memory usage raise to 80-85% then ine many cases also to 96-97-98%.

Now and in most of the times I have in the background a game running in this case battlefield bad company 2 that take about 600-800MB of memory.
But it happen even if I close the game.

The only way to push the memory usage down is in the task manager to shut down the Edge/Chrome and all it's tabs.
Then to start the browser again.
I tested my pc with memtest I don't have any memory errors.
I don't have any blue screens. Can't figure out where is the problem.
My brother have like 10-15 years old pc then my one with 4GB ram and he can open like 20 tabs of chrome without a problem.

While the memory usage raise to 85-98% everything is running slow all the pc is slow almost freezing.

It also depends, what kind of and how many extensions you have.
Some of them might be causing it, try to temporarily disable all.
Finding a cause can be difficult, you can try CleanMem Free.

My boy's desktop has a low memory warning problem that is a little different than some of the other threads I've read here.  He gets the warning when he plays SWTOR.  Task manager shows about 290 MB of memory in use during play with no leaking.  He has an SSD as the system drive with 140 GB free out of about 240 GB.  After going on the Microsoft boards, I tried to fix the problem by resetting the virtual memory settings to "automatically size paging file" and even a custom setting but the settings won't save following a restart and it always comes back saying that no virtual memory has been allocated.  The PC runs Win8 32 bit with a Core DUO E8400 and 4GB of RAM on the MB.  I'd be grateful for any suggestions/help.

A:After upgrading memory,its works,Virtual memory Tweaking Now?

Unless you have Win95 you likely donít want to go messing with your virtual memory. And even in that case it is the vcache you would be more interested in tweaking. Win98 and higher handles memory well.

If you watch your system monitor and are sure you arenít using your virtual memory you might do the ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 INI tweak. Unless you are doing graphics, video editing or something RAM intensive you likely arenít using the virtual memory and the tweak wonít slow your computer. It doesnít speed it up, it just stops needless writes to the hard drive during idle time. Information if you want to do that: http://www.aumha.org/a/memmgmt.htm

Donít let anyone talk you into Cacheman or any of those Mem/RAM/Turbo/Boost type programs. They were written for Win95 and counterproductive in anything since.

Now keep in mind, this isn't a normal issue, as I have yet to actually find anything in regards to what to do to fix this.
(I have also posted on Microsoft's official forum, and had zero luck, due to the fact that everyone who started posting had a different issue/misunderstood what my issue was, and distracted the attention from the opening post.)
When downloading anything at all, be it games, music, videos, etc, System and Compressed Memory starts to use up more and more memory, which obviously sounds normal, and might seem fine.
However, if I have not restarted my computer at all, around the 10gb download mark, my computer starts running extremely slow, while System and Compressed Memory starts maxing out Memory usage on Task Manager.
Any help is appreciated, as I obviously have not found anything in regards to this myself. It is possible I just haven't looked hard enough, but regardless!
If there is any information you'd like to ask of me, I'll do my best to check this post as often as possible. Thanks!

PC Specs :
Intel i7 6700k
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970
Gigabyte Z170X-Gaming 3
8 GB (Two 4 GB Modules) of DDR4 G Skill 2800Mhz

(If there is anything I need to post that I missed, such as a system analysis, please let me know. Thanks!)

I installed the Nvidia 9500GT got the Blue screen of death after many headaches I took it back and got the Nvidia GT520 still got BSOD I have done a complete hardware diagnostic test on every piece of hardware on the computer and everything checks out good. I have the latest Video card and mother board drivers installed and keep getting the blue screen of death on random things mostly DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR EQUAL
a theory I have is maybe the Video card memory speed is conflicting with the Video card memory runs faster then the System memory and I've read that Vista has problems with ram that runs at different speeds. could that be the issue?
Just a quick update I just uninstalled the Nvidia HD Audio Driver I have a feeling it was conflicting with the Realtek High Definition Audio Driver...
We will see...
Any help or info from you guys will be helpful, thanks

A:Video card memory vs system memory conflict?

Just tried this:http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=586183&mpage=1Hopefully this will fix the BSOD issue,I'm sick of getting the BSOD on my system when nothing is wrong with the hardware. I work to hard to keep it running like new, don't want something simple to take it down. but this has been going on for weeks hopefully this will fix.I'll know in the morning. This is also interesting:http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=190995

Hello, i have a Windows 7 64bit OS and i am running a Laptop.
Ever since i had this virus (Win32 malware gen) which kept coming up with a notifications of the virus on avast every 2-5 minutes my computer was running slow and when i deleted the virus, by dragging it in to the recycle bin and erasing it, my computer was still running slow?

(MY COMPUTER ALWAYS HAS UNDER 100MB FREE MEMORY WHEN I RUN 1 GAME OR APPLICATION)

MY LAPTOP SPECS;
System manufacturer- EMachines
System Model- eME443
RAM- 2 GB DDR3 memory
Processor- AMD Dual-Core Processor E-350
Graphics card- AMD Radeon HD 6310

I've tried so many things to fix this problem, I have tried;
-Deleting the cache of all my browsers
-Cleaning and defragging my registry with "Clean My PC- Registry Cleaner"
-Deleting the 'appdata' cache
-Installing new drivers
-Searching for viruses with avast
-Doing a Memory/RAM test with "MemTest"

(By the way I currently haven't been getting virus notifications, so i don't think the problem is a virus)

(one time i got a BSOD, which on the top of the BSOD it said something about 'PAGEING ERROR)

I attached Images of;
-My Task Managers 'Processes' tab
-My Task Managers 'Processes- All users' tab
-My Task Managers 'performance' tab
-My Avast virus report of the virus I had before

SO COULD ANY ONE HELP PLEASE WITH THIS LAG PROBLEM

A:LOW Computer Memory- ONLY 90MB or less Free Memory? Soo Slow?

Hello GiCOMMANDO and welcome to Seven Forums.

I would run another full scan using the free Malwarebytes. It has a good reputation of finding things other products miss. Another highly recommended free on-demand scanner is ESET Online Scanner. (No anti-malware product is 100% effective 100% of the time. If there was such a thing we'd all be using it. A second - or third - malware scan is a good thing.)

ESET

Malwarebytes

From your first screen shot it appears that a portion of your 2GB RAM is being set aside, most likely for your graphics card. Your computer is starting out with less than a full 2GB RAM and 2GB is the absolute recommended minimum. I'd give serious thought to increasing RAM to 4GB (I believe your machine will handle up to 8GB and prices are very low right now.)

Because of that virus, it's possible that critical system files may have been damaged or corrupted. Try running a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two, this tutorial.) If problems are found run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

And don't forget your basic maintenance chores such as disk cleanup, defrag, disk check, etc. Please post back if anything helped or not.

I've been getting this error message frequently while on the internet. Can someone help me?

The instruction at 0x73dd3190 referenced memory at 0x6769742a. The memory could not be "read". OK to terminate, Cancel to debug.

Thank you!

A:memory prob? The instruction at 0x73dd3190 referenced memory...

I would remove/disable all IE add-ons and see if the problem goes away. IMO, these sorts of situations are often caused by toolbars, etc. that users have installed.

With IE open...Tools/Manage Add-ons.

HI;

I am having a problem with my memory getting tied up / used up and not being able to access it again until I reboot.
Machine: Dell xps studio 8100
OS: Win 7,
Processor: i7 2.8
RAM: 16GB (max it will take)
Video: ATI Radeon 5700 (running 3 monitors)
Versions: As far as I know I am running current versions of everything, including video drivers, flash, chrome, etc. (I've tried running Chrome with both the build in version of flash and the system version -haven't seen a difference)
Browser: I nearly exclusively run Chrome / Canary with auto-updates so am at the latest builds. What seems to cause me to use up / run out of memory is after I play videos (YouTube, Netflix, etc.), the memory seems to get used, but is not returned to the system, even if the browser is closed and re-opened.

Right now for example things are working fine; I rebooted my system a couple hours ago (but have not played any videos). I have Adobe Lightroom running, Picasa, Chrome and Canary (currently 4 web browser windows open with 52 tabs open). Task Manager currently shows me using 8.20GB of ram, that seems pretty reasonable to me.

Normally my system will keep running properly (if a program is closed, memory is freed up) right up until I start to play any videos (YouTube, Netflix, etc.) then it will start using up more memory. (Of course I expect it to use more memory during playback) However, even if I restart the browser, the memory does not get freed back up. For example, jus... Read more

A:Troubleshooting Excessive Memory Use (Memory Leak?) after playing vid.

Have you looked in Chromes own task manager to see if you can find a tab using excessive ram?

Using the Task Manager in Chrome Browser

See if indeed closing the video tab actually deletes the listing from the task manager perhaps?

I am currently using MemClean and it not only decreases my memory use but it also seems to improve the general performance of Windows and apps.

Is this really the case or is it just my impression?

A:Do Memory Cleaners improve the memory usage and performance?

It is just your impression.

Windows 7 has very good memory management on it's own and has no need for and will not benefit from any third party memory "cleaners", "optimizers", "boosters", etc. The only very questionable benefit is to make the numbers in Task Manager more attractive to those who do not understand them.

David Solomon and Mark Russinovich, both well recognized Windows experts, mentioned these programs in the Microsoft publication "Windows Internals", sixth edition. They were very critical and did not recommend these programs.

I've been looking at the Surface Pro and other tablet/laptop convertible machines fitted with Win 8. The top-end models usually offer only flash memory in stead of a hard drive. The standard 128 GB flash memory available seems hopelessly inadequate for storing Win 8, a full range of programs and a decent amount of data. Most of these thin, expensive models have only one or two USB ports available. Where must the necessary memory come from? Must an external hard drive be carried along? Nothing wears a USB port out more quickly than a fairly heavy external device such as a hard drive dangling from it in mobile situations.

A:Lack of needed memory on flash memory Win 8 machines

You can add extra storage with SD cards on some of them. It's not ideal but better than nothing I guess.
