windows 2000 wont detect new hardware

Q: windows 2000 wont detect new hardware

This is my last hope before I return everything back to the store,I recently brought a Belkin HIGH -SPEED MODE WIRELESS DESKTOP NETWORK CARD. 802.11g MODEL NUMBER F5D7001. VERSION 1000
I was running window 98 then upgraded to SE didn't work, so then I upgrade my BIOS so i am now running Phoenix award vg.00pg.(not sure if that is configured right yet) still nothing, so i upgraded to windows 2000.and still nothing. my processor is intel celeron 460mzh. 440 chipset family.

windows is not finding the new network card. I am not currently up to date on my updates on 2000 cuz somehow i keep download the online updates, My motherboard is an Asus p2-99(way out of date but since i just upgraded the Bios really hate to go and get a new one, can i update that more so i can down load the card.)

one more thing tried to install my cable modem on that computer and still nothing I got the card installed but cant get the modem installed. so download everything directly to the other computer is out.

What am I missing ,where can I download it.

thanks ahead of time for a very baffled mother who just want her son to have a computer and leave mine alone.

Ok well I'm going to list my hardware if it has any relevance to my problem then describe the problem:

-p6x58d-e asus motherboard
-930 i7 cpu
-6g corsair xms3 ram
-xfx 5870 gpu
-750w corsair tx power supply
-Azza solano1000 case(probly has no relevance, but the HDD led is plugged and doesn't flash)

(figuring the bug is in caused by 1 of these 2 so giving full product desc. from ncix.com)
-Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA3 6GB/S 7200RPM 64MB Cache 3.5IN Dual Proc Hard Drive OEM
-Samsung SH-S243D/BEBE 24X Black DVD Writer SATA OEM

So I just finished installing and connecting all the hardware, it works, BIOS detects everything, although for some reason HDD is sata3 6gbs and connected in sata3 slot with 6gbs cable marvel controller only displays speed 3gbs(that's not the actual problem though). After exiting BIOS or if I let it run without entering it I get this message.

"Reboot and Select proper boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected boot device and press any key"

This is WITH a windows 7 x64 DVD that I got from school(I'm in computer science I get windows for free) I have used this disk to install windows 7 on another PC and it worked fine. I set the boot order for the dvd drive first in the BIOS didn't change anything.

Let me know any ideas, tips fixes or if you need additional info

Hi everybody,
Any help massively appreciated.

A friend of a friend set up my dell mini for me and it won't go online. I recall getting it to work int the past at a friends house but not since then at multiple wifi locations.

Windows says it can't detect networking hardware...
The troubleshooter can't identify the problem, and I share internet with a neighbor so I can't easily set up a landline to experiment.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi All.
I have recently replaced a HD for my mother on an 2001 Gateway PC, which originally ran "Windows Millenium Edition"..1Ghz Intel Processor with 128MB memory, MOBO drivers all updated from the makers site.

I have formatted the HD, which is compatible with the system, details unavailable at present, installed 2000 pro, and all relevant windows updates etc... however, the operating system refuses to detect a "Labtec Corded Optical Mouse".

I have installed the products drivers and also the updated ones from the manufacturers site to no avail. ..and that's not all..

The PC does detect an old "Packard Bell Ball Mouse" though, and I presume uses the default windows drivers to operate, having said that, if I remove the "Packard Bell" mouse for some reason, on reconnection, the "Detected New Hardware" programme kicks into life and then procedes to re-install the drivers for the mouse.. ..

The same problem is revealed if I remove a self powered 4 port USB hub extension... all attatched utility items.. ie. Web Cam, Printer, Keyboard... are all deemed as just being "Detected" and all have to be re-installed..

One thing that has really got me is this... if the operating system thinks that everything being plugged into a USB port is a new HardWare device... then why does it not "see" the "Labtec Mouse".. which is my mothers preferred mouse..

I am at a loss as to why these problems ar... Read more

With it, I recently wiped clean my computerdue to an error I was unable to repair. Everything went well but I cannotconnect to my home Wi-Fi. I haveattached a picture of what my device manager shows. I have read several postsregarding the same problem but I cannot find a solution. Could anyone help?

Download them to a USB, >> plug it into problem comp >> select each of your missing drivers >> Update driver >> Browse my comp>> let me pick >> select usb drive

In addition, it appears that my video card is not being recognized as well, given that my screen resolution is incorrect and the dxdiag shows my video card as "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter". I assume that it's also a driver issue that I can resolve once I have my internet working.

Hello TheHumbleDespot, welcome to the Seven Forums.

You need to find a PC with Internet access and download drivers for your GPU and network controller. Download them to a USB stick or other removable media, then transfer to your PC and install.

Not knowing what network controller you have I cannot help you there. Your Nvidia GPU drivers can be found here: GeForce GTX 560 Ti and GeForce GTX 550 Ti

Ok, I have a wierd problem. Well actually 2.

The first one is that my original hdd must have gotten infected or something, because sound is totally disabled even though device manager says it's working, internet connection shows as being disconnected, but actually works, Windows update won't work at all, system restore is saying that there's nothing there to restore, etc. I tried the obvious stuff like malwarebyte, hitman, spybot, adaware, antivir full scan and such. Nothing works. I've never tried using hijackthis or one of these forums, so I decided to try it.

Second problem - I decided that with this happening, I wanted to get a new drive anyway, even if the old drive gets fixed (I'd use it as a storage disc). So I bought a 500gb SATA, installed it, put it as my primary boot, and installed Vista from disc. Everything went smoothly and Windows started up. Very quickly, I noticed that Vista wasn't detecting ANY of the hardware such as the video card, ethernet, soundcard, etc. I asked Windows to look for new hardware in device manager to no avail. I restarted to see if anything changed, but alas, it didn't, so I changed back my old HD to the primary boot and am using that again.

I can't understand what's going on. I only have one copy of windows, and have it installed on both, but I didn't think that would be a problem. I didn't authenticate it on the new system yet. When I'm on my old one like now, everything... Read more

I really need some solid help here. I'm not by any means a pc wizard but somehow I can't figure this one out. For all the pc problems I have encountered I have managed to fix by Googleing it, this time, I've failed and I need your help please.

I have an hp pavilion 15-p100dx that was running on Windows 8.1. Well, I removed the hard drive and installed an ssd, 8gb of ram and also fresh installed windows 7 pro on new ssd. It's blazing fast now and I got windows 7 pro running now. However, now I can't connect to the Internet because of the above mentioned. Not even the Ethernet is working so I can't even update any of the drivers online.

I went to hp software and updates to download network adapter drivers but it says windows 7 pro is not supported on the hp pavilion 15-p100dx so I'm at a loss now. In the BIOS it detects windows 8.1 but perhaps because windows 7 pro isn't activated yet because of lack of Internet. What else can I do now?

Ok so i downgraded my laptop from Windows vista home premium to Windows XP SP2. The laptop is a Compaq CQ60-417DX. I have loaded network and wifi drivers. The computer is not detecting my modem. When i go to device manager everything is there except for my modem. The only devices in the Other Devices category are PCI device, and video controller. I am not worried about the video controller right now as i am using a VGA driver which is working fine. I think the PCI device is my audio but im not sure. Its vendor id is 8086 and the device is 293E. If anyone tells me to download something please try to keep it under 20 MB because i am on dial-up, but if necessary i can download something up to about 30 MB. A:PC wont detect windows 10 copy

Hi I am not sure what you done, but the PC is trying to boot and load from the network, it is looking, via ethernet, for a DHCP way to boot and load an OS.   May be you need to change the BIOS boot order. So the copy of Windows 10, USB or DVD, needs to be in a port/device that is the primary boot device, and disable network booting, either by removing the ethernet cable and/or disable wake on LAN in the BIOS. AND you can obtain a 'spare' copy of W 10 from here (https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10) but you will need to activate it either from an earlier install or by key, which is an .iso and will burn to DVD or USB. If in doubt please ask.

adamcato, click the start button, then type Device Manager in the Search Box. Click Device Manager in the list. Look under Network Adapters and see if your network cards have an X or exclamation next to them. You may have to go to Toshiba's website and download the network card drivers.

Try using an ethernet cable connected to your router from the laptop or use another computer and download the drivers to a flash drive, then install on the laptop.

I've got windows 2k, and my problem is a common one with many Ipod users.

Currently my ipod shuffle isnt being detected by windows when its plugged in, it wont even recharge either, as if its not even there at all. Trying to reinstall the software did nothing. So I'm stuck here without a clue on what to do, it worked perfectly before. I've also started to notice that its battery life wasnt lasting very long anymore (Before it started refusing to charge). Any suggestions? And thanks in advance.

right click on the desktop and go to properties, once in there check for a display tab or something like that

if you see 2 'monitors' in there, simple check 'extend monitor'

should work.

if not use the go by from HP, in this example they are connecting a TV and an External Monitor, disregard steps for TV.

Hey guys...newbie posting out of total desperation and needing help!

I bought a Samsung SH-D162D DVD Drive in a USB enclosure to connect to my Toshiba Windows 7 laptop via USB.

I cannot get windows 7 to find it! When I plug in the USB cable the balloon comes up to say it has been installed, I can see it on My Computer for about 1 or 2 minutes then it drops off. It isnt listed in my hardware or anything.

Its not found in Disk Management or My Devices so it isnt a case of changing the drive letter - i cant find the drive to change it.

I have also tried to find the upper and lower settings in regedit....couldnt find them so couldnt delete them as advised in other posts of this nature.

It is set to master, the IDE connector and power connectors are fine. Its gotta be a windows 7 problem cause it does show up very breifly. In the minute or 2 its there I cant do anything with it...it just hangs although it will open and close. Ive googled it and cant find anything...mainly registry issues but they didnt help.

Ive also connected it up to another laptop with XP and had no problems so I know the DVD Rom works fine and all the cables are ok.

Ive tried in all 4 USB ports on my laptop and also turned off all energy settings...all with no luck. And I also have EVERY windows 7 update...

Heres exactly what happens from power off on the enclosure.

1 - I plug in the USB lead then turn on power to the enclosure.
2 - I quickly go to Start, Computer and I can see the DVD Rom... Read more

Please help I am on the verge of losing important data

It does not detect on any other ports of the desktop or in another desktop or laptop, and also my ports are fine I can plug in other hard disk drives just fine.

A:Windows wont detect portable harddisk

Well, I would try to see if you have a Linux machine or if a friend has one where you can plug your external in and see if it can detect it?

Also, this may not be your HD failing but it could be the chip on your case that has gone bad. The only way to test this is to physically remove the Hard Drive from its external case (being VERY careful). Typically (but not always) this involves completely destroying the case. As I said "not always" my external case simply has a piece that I can remove to get to the Sata connectors, which is what you want to get to.

Once you have removed your external case and/or have access to the Sata connectors on the actual Hard drive, use a Sata data/power cable to connect it directly to your PC. (as if it were just a normal HD)

the card is a sound blaster audigy sb1394

this is a print screen of my device manager

thanks !

A:windows 7 wont detect my sound card

danneth, welcome to the forums.

First thing that comes to mind is have you installed any motherboard/chipset drivers? Windows 7 has a fairly good inventory of drivers, but depending on the age of the hardware it may be not much more than enough to provide basic functionality, and take actual drivers from the hardware manufacturer to get full function out of it.

I was going to try and reformat and back it up. But I have nothing to back up the HDD with...so I'm out of luck.

The BIOS is up to date.
Windows Service Pack 2 is up to date.
disk management wont detect anymore then 111 gb's of space so I cant partition what's left.
The seagate website has no software that will fix it. Just a recommendation for the options I have already tried.

So I am completely lost to what I can do now....any help would be great.

A:Solved: Motherboard Wont Detect Speakers In Windows 7

A few thoughts. You would only select the HDMI output, if you are using the HDMI output for your audio. Speaker detection is hardware and driver based. And unless I'm mistaken, speakers won't show connected via a digital output (ie: HDMI or SPDIF). Also, if you are testing using the "rear jacks" and "front panel", then it sounds like you are using the 3.5mm analog jacks. In which case, you wouldn't select SPDIF in the audio setup.

Hey there peoples,

This guy I work with has a computer at his house with WindowsMe on c:, and he just put win2000 on d:...

Among other problems (he didn't check w2k's hcl for his monitor), when he tries to access his modem from w2k, it doesn't work...It's coming into COM3, but his w2k doesn't even see COM3 to get to the modem. But when he boots Me, it works fine...

So, is this just as simple as the modem not being supported by w2k, thus it won't recognize the port? Would that cause it? Or is there something else that he needs to do?

W2k seems to be good at detecting deviced during installation, so I'm at a loos as to why it can't see the port or the modem...

Any thoughts?

Thanks....

I wanted a clean slate for my computer so I reinstalled Windows 7 (not upgrade, i used custom)with just the disc. It's a custom built PC that my friend generously gave to me so I didn't have any manufacturers disc to work with. Anyway, it's always had an Internet connection through a wired connection, and after it finished booting it wouldn't let me connect to the net even with the ethernet cord plugged in. I quickly realized something must have happened to the driver in the process of reinstalling, and now I need to find the drivers to install them onto my computer again but I have no clue where to find them.

I've already tried uninstalling the drivers, and then scanning for hardware changes to get them to reinstall but it did not work. It still says there are issues. I also can't use Windows Update since well, I can't connect to the net. When I go to Devices and Printers, I see a ! By my comp name. I try to troubleshoot but it says my Universal Serial Bus Controller doesn't have a driver, and my Ethernet Controller doesn't have a driver. Here is a text file (Try to find "Problem Devices" in the text file that may help on the text file) I've attached with my system info let me know if you guys need any more info, I'd really appreciate any help on what drivers to get and/or how to fix this issue.

I apologize but having searched other threads on the same subject and having no luck I think I need to describe my problem specifically.

I had a hard drive failure so just fitted a new WD internal drive to my desktop and freshly installed Win 7 Pro, 64Bit. It can't connect to a network and states "Windows did not detect any Networking Hardware". I've looked in the system info and can seeWAN Miniport (SSTP) listed among other things under network adapter. Is one of them it? It seems to have an associated driver listed but it's obviously not working.

I've spent the last two hours at least searching for an answer to this but hope someone here can now help. I have access to the internet using my Win 8 laptop (using it now to write this).

If you need more information on the system please let me know and I'll supply what I can.

Thanks for any help.

Dear all,

My ASUS laptop (i7-4700HQ; windows 8.1 installed couple of months ago) always shows the available Wifi connections, including those of the neighbours.

Today my grandson (1,5 years old) played on the PC and afterwards my laptop did not detect any Wifi connections. Other devices (laptops and smartphones) do show the Wifi signals perfectly). Printscreens and additional information.docxSee printscreens for additional information about the wireless adaptor, pop-up and laptop.

I already tried the following:
- Turn off laptop - turn off modem - turn on modem - turn on laptop (twice)
- Switch off and on the wireless button (fn+f2), turning the wireless signal off and on again (5 times)
- Close and reopen the laptop screen (10 times)
- Starting and following the troubleshooting - this did not give any suggestions or findings (5 times)

My feeling is that it is a simple solution, since it always worked fine and my grandson pushed a couple of buttons. I don't dare to Refresh Windows, as my apps will be uninstalled, right? Or will this be an effective solution possibly?

Thanks for any suggestions!!

You haven't given us any details about the machine so it would help the experts if you told them what make and model machine it is and is it a desktop or laptop. Perhaps you need to install the drivers for your machine, did you get them on a CD ?

It says the hardware has not been installed because it cannot find the necisary software. Well I did install the CD's one of the adapters does not even come with a cd its just supposed to be poped in, instaled and ready to go. I tested them on another comp and they worked fine.

I have installed the disc that came with the hardware and it still does not work. In device manager its shows up with a yellow exclamation mark over it, and when you open properties it states no drivers found, and it is showing as device enabled

If I then run windows fault fixer to update the drivers, and search for drivers it goes through the stages and then when you click finish it doesnt work still it also moves the hardware shown in device manager into part of IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers with a yellow exclamation mark still showing, when it should really register in the drives section of device manager.

I have connected the sandisk and camera to a friends Dell laptop and windows XP automatically registers it and sets it up, and its listed under the drives section of device manager - with no problems, so it appears to be an issue with the way my plug and play sets up the hardware when its plugged in.

Try Johnwill's USB solution:

First step, Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Create a restore point and name it something like "Before USB Fix". This is to bail you out if something goes wrong during the following process and makes things worse.

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]

"DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"="1"

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

Any advice would be welcome, Thanks.

A:Windows 2000 wont boot

I used this fix one time for the same problem.

Some PC's can't take on the SP4 update with out errors.
That said.
You should have a backup copy of the ADVAPI32.dll in the dllcache folder, but because
you ran the the SP4 update it maybe in error.
The one you need will be 350kb. dated 12-7-99 if you have one that is 545kb dated
8-29-02 that's the new that the SP4 added. (it replaced the old one)
1st thing you want to try is safemode and see if you can get in and check on the
file.
It will be in the C:\winnt\system32 and in the C:\winnt\system32\dllcache folder.(a
hidden folder)
If the file is the right size and the date is right in the dllcache folder copy it
to the winnt\system folder and then try and reboot.

If it's not you can download a copy of it from the net or pull a copy from the win2k
cd disk.
Use the Recover Console to replace the file.

Below you will see some info about the file.

avapi32.dll is a part of an advanced API services library supporting numerous APIs
including many security and registry calls.

API calls List
http://www.andreavb.com/API_ADVAPI32.html

Download from:
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?advapi32

If all this fails you can use the win2k cd to repair the OS files on the PC.

Good Luck.

I don't have a clue what he did, but apparently I am now missing my networking driver.. at first I couldn't connect to the Internet. It kept saying there was no networking hardware or adapter detected or installed. I looked in my device manager, and there's no network anything in there... I also discovered this morning that I cannot delet anything. Once it begins the process of sending the file(s) to the recycle bin, it goes nowhere; the transfer speed remains at 0 kbps/sec and never changes.

I can't delete anything and I can't use the Internet, both problems I need to resolve in a hurry.

Hello, this is my first post here, Im hoping someone may know why the following is happening...

I recently flashed my bios to the latest version. Everything went very smoothly and the system is running great. The only problem I ran into is that now my operating system (Vista x32 Ultimate) no longer is able to detect my RAM or CPU when I view them in System. This is rather strange to me as the OS rates my system hardware 5.9. I would not be bothered by this except that I do a substantial amount of gaming on this system. Many new games (such as Hellgate: London and Crysis SP Demo) scan the system hardware and will lock the user out of advanced graphics settings if the OS returns a hardware speed value below the recommended specifications. Since Vista is reporting that I have a 0.0ghz processor and 0mb of ram, I am unable to crank my games up now

My question is, does anyone here know how to force the OS to recognize my hardware so that it is properly displayed in system. (I am aware that Vista x32 can only detect 2.85gb of ram, regardless of if you have more installed). My system is reporting 0.0mb.

My specifications are as follows:
QX6800 @ 2.93
4GB DDR2 PC9200 @ 1150mhz (2.4V)
8800 Ultra 768mb SLI OC (630mhz)
Asus Striker Extreme BIOS: 1305 (latest)
Vista Ultimate x32

Thanks for any and all help guys!

I've had my PC now for almost 5 years. Everything was fine until one day my Windows XP PC just froze. I restarted it and now my DVD-ROM, CD-RW ROM are no longer detected at the System POST Screen. instead of the Drives showing, it now says the Secondary master and secondary Slave drives fails. The only thing that is detected is my Seagate Hard Drive. When I press F1 to continue I get a message saying "NTLDR is missing and I have to restart. I put the Windows XP Pro Disk in the drive and the same message pops up over and over. So I went to the System POST Screen, pressed delete to enter Setup. I checked the BIOS and my DVD Rom and CD-RW ROM no longer appear.

The settings were originally set to AUTO on the Secondary Primary and Secondary Slave for the DVD-ROM and CDRW Drives. Once the power is on, both of the lights on both drives appear and they both open and close with no problems. Once I put a disc into both drives, the discs also rotate. In the BIOS I changed from AUTO to CD-Rom for both the Secondary master and slave. The two drives are still not detected.

The Primary Slave was disabled because of a hard drive that I had years ago. The Primary Master is my current Seagate hard drive which besides the RAM is the only thing detected on ... Read more

One of the laptops at work is having issues, and I think someone with monkey hands screwed something up. As "the computer guy", it's on me to get it fixed.

His Windows 7 computer will not connect to a wifi network. It can detect them (so I know the radio is on), but after half a beat, I get that "windows was unable to connect" message".

Thinking it was the internal card, I connected my external antenna, and got the same error. So I think I can rule out hardware. I tried using an identical laptop from work, and that one connected with no problem. So I think I can rule out any issues with my router.

I've updated all the possible drivers on the computer, Windows is up to date, and i've disabled IPV6.

Here's where it gets weird. He can get an intermittent connection when he uses his phone's hotspot.

I've been posting similar problems with 2000 ever since loading it. I got the same problem this weekend and could not solve it. I've ended up with yet another re-install of 2000.
I don't know if we have the same problem, but if not, the only clue I can give you is that there are supposedly serious known conflicts between US Robotic modems and Windows 2000.

I have it set up to obtain an IP address automatically. By the way it is connecting to a wireless access point, not directly to the router. The access point is piggybacked off the main router. Hey there,
I’m trying to run a repair on my friends Compaq Presario 1245 but I have a strange problem. Every time I boot into setup, it will load the setup files and then just try to start windows up. The setup program will boot from the CD, load the drivers and whatnot, but instead of going into the actual setup process (where you can install a clean copy, repair etc), it just tries to boot to Windows automatically (Which doesn’t work).

I've tried it even with a Windows 2003 CD and the same thing happens. I have went and reset the bios to their factory settings just in case for a session but that doesn't seem to be the problem (the CMOS battery is dead anyways). I was told the CMOS battery being dead might be the problem but its never really been and issue for me before when Ive worked on laptops (with dead CMOS batteries)

Any help to this would be appreciated as my friend has a bunch of tuning maps for his car.

Hi Guys

I am at my wits end! I have one pc and one wireless laptop, which are connected together via a NetgearDG834 Router/ Modem.

I recently had to reinstall the PC with windows 2000 operating system. The laptop is on windows vista and now they will not see each other.

I have reconnected the workgroup and both confirm laptop and pc confirm that they are in the same workgroup.

The laptop (on vista) have a fixed ip address of 19.168.0.148 and the pc (on win 2K) has ip address 192.168.0.47. Both pcs can access the internet through the router/ modem Ip address 192.168.0.100

BUT the PC (win 2K) cannot see itself on the network even when I share files on the c drive and yet when I search for the computer it comes up under the correct workgroup and so does the shared files, but when I click into the shared files, it states "the networkpath is not found"

the laptop (on vista) can see itself on the nework and workgroup and it's own shared files but does not see the win 2K pc or the pc's shared files.

I can ping each other's pc and it recieves and replies but i CANNOT ping the respective computer names

I know the pc and laptop did see each other before in a previous workgroup prior to my reinstalling the pc's windows 2K operating system and now they just dont.

The PC is connected to a printer which I would like the laptop to use and it can only use this is the laptop is connected to the PC's netowrk which at the moment they both appear to b... Read more

Top suspect when you can't ping by name is firewall settings. You may think you disabled them, but it appears you may not have.

For each computer, let's see this:

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

nbtstat -n

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Using the same instructions as above, I'd also like to see the following for each computer.

IPCONFIG /ALL

So for the past few days my driver has been acting up, my computer starts up in 800 x 600 resolution . I've tried resetting my BIOS, Downloading new Nvida driver and installing it and even rolling it back and now it's stuck on VGAsave.

Restarting it used to work, but now no matter how times I try reset it, it still won't work. I tried going to display drivers uninstalling then going 'scan for hardware changes' and then I reset it and nothing happens. I also did try downloading driver and window 7 updates but they don't down, they just stay at 0% which is very strange considering my download speed is 110 kb/s.

I don't know what else to do, help would be appreciated.

Is there a way to turn off 'autodetech new hardware' in Windows 2000/XP?

Next Question: If I disable this 'feature', what are the caveats. For instance, would this also disable the detection of flash drives and other USB devices I plug in.

Is there a way to disable the auto-detection of printers without disabling the detection of other types of devices.

The reason I ask is that I occasionally encounter machines that want to set up the printer (or other hardware) every time the system is turned on, regardless of the fact that it is already set up and has been working fine for months.

Other solutions welcome, too.

What is the model name and or number of your motherboard? Chances are you may need to reinstall the chipset drivers for the motherboard so it hopefully will detect the correct devices, etc.

Hi all,

I have recently aquired a Belkin Switch2 KVM to allow me to use my Keyboard / Mouse / Monitor with both my PC (running Vista) and Mac. Everything is working fine however there is a slight niggle on the PC. When the KVM is switched to the Mac and then back to the PC, Vista takes 30 seconds or so before the Kbd & Mouse are detected and useable again. Switching to the mac, control is instantaneous.

I believe that Vista is regestering that the Kbd & mouse (which are connected via USB and not PS2) have been disconnected when switched over to Mac.

Is there anyway to stop Vista detecting that hardware has been disconnected so that the pause is hopefully removed?

Many thanks for any help or advice

After several months I've managed to sort this. I am posting hoping that there may be others who have had this problem that this fix may work for.

My issue seemed to be the NVIDIA Display Driver Service. When I stopped, disabled and rebooted the problem seemed to go away without any noticeable effect on the NVidia card!

Using WinXP Pro SP3 in SBS 2003 domain environment, one user experiences very slow performance when opening folders (both local and network). Using MSCONFIG, I narrowed down the offending service to Shell Hardware Detect. When it is disabled, folders open quickly, when it is enabled, folders take up to 3 minutes to open. I also noticed that in Services, Shell Hardware Detect is Disabled instead of the expected Automatic and Started, but I am assuming that this is due to being disabled in MSCONFIG.

What are the repercussions of leaving this service Disabled? If this must be set to Automatic and Started, what other steps can I do to fix this issue?

The system uses Symantec AV Corp 10.1 and I also did a scan using MalwareBytes. Malwarebytes only found one problem using the Quick Scan and I fixed that issue (sorry, I do not remember what it was). Planning to do a Full Scan tonight. HiJackThis did not show anything obvious to me either but I am not an expert.

TIA.

Bill

A:Shell Hardware Detect Causes Slow Performance

Shell Hardware Detection

Used for the auto play of devices like memory cards, CD drives, etc. Also, set to Automatic if you are experiencing problems with laptop docking stations. In "My Computer," you may not see your hardware (example: DVD drive) displayed as a "DVD Drive" if this service is disabled. However, all functionality still exists. In addition, when checking the properties of an "auto play" device, such as a DVD drive, you will not have an auto play tab displayed or available. This service also allows the option of selecting what action you wish to take with a particular "type" of file. If you enjoy the auto play function of CD's and DVD's after inserting them into your drive, leave this service on Automatic.

Hello,
specs I remember:
core2 e6600
4GB DDR2 Ram (i think its DDR2)
nvidia 8800GTX 512MB
vista x32

This is more a question about HOW to diagnose a problem rather than expect you guys to tell me what is wrong

Today, I thought I was having a graphics card problem because in the middle of a game, the screen glitched out with multi-colored boxes all over and the system was unresponsive. a CTL+ALT+DEL resulted in a high speed flicker of the monitor.

After booting normally and having the same issue at the desktop, I tried safe mode and thought I was ok. a few minutes later I was having pink lines drawn across the screen.

So I guess it isn't just the graphics card. But I am not sure where to begin in finding out what part is causing the problem.

while the computer was still on I briefly looked through the event monitor but could not find anything (I also am not totally sure what I am even looking for)

Short of taking the PC into a shop, Is there a safe way to find out what part is causing all the headaches? Do I remove parts one-by-one and power back on? I'm not sure what parts could even cause screen problems beside the video card. and I don't have a spare MB or anything to swap out.

thanks guys.
