Hello all & RUSTAM,

My name is Jordan, an Account Manager in Toronto.

A year ago I set a password on my Inspiron 2200 and forgot it. Judging by the forums, you might get these requests frequently so I'm sorry if I'm just another person asking for help.

My SERVICE TAG is 7YGPW81-595B, I was wondering you would be able to email me my code or old pass. What bugs me is that I remember setting it to something simple like 1234 or 12345 or asdf. You might see that if its in the service tag. I tried for hours already.

My email is [email protected], or I'll be happy to give you my phone number via email.

Anyways, IF YOU ARE EVER IN TORONTO, I would like to buy you a drink or show you the town. Let me know. I hope you get this soon!

Thanks.

Hi all,
I have a spare computer from work, but I do not know the password to log in, and so would like to wipe it. Ergo, I decided to try and boot the computer using a USB thumb drive with Ubuntu on it, so as to wipe the windows partition on the hard drive and then install Ubuntu. The computer boots normally to the Windows XP login screen. When I press F2 or F12, there is no display output. I have tried this with a variety of monitors and with two D-SUB cables (one at a time). These are the Samsung LT27B551EW, LG 27EA63V-P and Dell Rev A00. None of them show either the Dell splash screen or the BIOS screen. I have tried pressing F2 and F12 at strategic intervals (every 2 seconds) but still there is no display output. I also know that I was able to access the BIOS on the same computer a few months ago, but I forgot which displays I used then - I had to wait for permission to wipe the hard drive.
I have also looked up this problem in a number of other places, and found that this is supposedly due to an incompatibility of some kind with the monitor. However, I am not sure as to how I might go about fixing this issue, as I do not have any other monitors or cables which work with the Dell - all my other cables are either HDMI or other sorts of cable which do not plug in to the Dell. If there is a way to use the hard drive and wipe it without accessing the BIOS I would also be grateful to hear about that too.

A:Dell Dimension 3000 skips Dell splash screen and BIOS

Try connecting the USB stick before you power the system on.
You can try this too:

Power off, and unplug power cord from rear of PC
Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
Reconnect power cord to rear of PC
Power on and immediately tap F12 a couple of times

At some later date, I changed the password to the Dell Dimension 8400 A02 (08-23-04) BIOS, and I can't remember it, trying any password I might have used in the past. I haven't got it. Is there a universal A02 BIOS password that I might use, or does anyone know how to get the one I put in a while ago.

External links are fine, just as long as I get it to work. Thanks a lot !

OK after much searching and research I cannot verify which of the bios updates is newer version 2.5.3 from Dec  07 updated in 2011 or 2.5.1 from Aug. 07 updated in 2012.. does anyone here know for sure if the 2.5.3 version is actually the newer updated bios<>?

A:Dell XPS 410 (Dimension 9200) bios

The higher the version number, the more recent the file.
Sometimes "Last updated" changes even when file is older, possibly because the file was reloaded on the website, or a change was made to its "package" (the software that installs it), etc...
If you already have 2.5.3 and try to flash 2.5.1, you'll likely get an error message. But you should be able to update from 2.5.1 to 2.5.3.
Keep in mind that BIOS updates are recommended only when the update fixes a problem you actually have. So if you don't have the NIC problem addressed by 2.5.3 , you can stay with 2.5.1.
And there's always a small chance a BIOS update will fail and turn the motherboard into a useless brick...

Your post is difficult to follow. You might want to re-write it using sentences and punctuation and a clear description.

From what I can infer, you're planning to somehow install an operating system on this hard drive using another computer, and it isn't going to work.

Ok, this should be a very simple question and maybe my brain is just defragmented and I can't find the info.

I'm trying to boot my brand new Dell XP Pro system to the BIOS so that I can set the BIOS to boot from a CD. But I can't seem to figure out how to get into the BIOS, as hitting the Delete key doesn't seem to be working. I've tried hitting it at various times to no avail. I also can't figure out when to hit F8 to even get the system to boot into Safe Mode. So not sure what I'm doing wrong because never in the boot cycle does it state to what my Win98 machines do for accessing the BIOS.

For the record, the reason I'm trying to do this is because I made an ISO image of The Ultimate Boot CD so that I can boot my new Dell from this CD (as I do not have a Floppy Drive in it) so that I can then run Ranish Partition Manager and split my 80GB hard drive into 4 partitions.

However, I'm having a slight issue getting the machine to boot from this CD. I'm probably just doing some simple thing wrong.

Problem occurred overnight. Was working yesterday! This Dell Dimension
3000 has a pre-bios boot failure (evidently?). None of the diagnostic lights
are lit, and the front power light is solid amber. I can hear it power up and the fan runs.

I have disconnected everything and reconnected, reseated the memory modules etc. Tried a second power cable and video cable. Researching led me to believe there is something amiss on the motherboard.

Any troubleshooting advice would be appreciated.

Greetings,As I am unable to start in Safe Mode (and XP Home came OEM-installed), I am planning on doing an in-place/repair install. I am able to get into the BIOS (ver. A10) and the keyboard works just fine. However, once I get into the Boot Sequence pop-up box, the + and - does not respond. The box looks like this:✓ 1. Floppy device (not installed)✓ 2. Hard-Disk Drive C:✓ 3. IDE CD-ROM DeviceI am able to use the up and down arrows to highlight each of these choices and also am able to use the SPACE bar to deselect the checkmarks; it's the +/- that does not work. For example, when I have option 3 highlighted, then type in <shift> + nothing happens. Pressing <enter> closes the pop-up and leaves me back in the BIOS with the "Boot Sequence" line highlighted. The F1 HELP dialog states that pressing <+> or <-> should raise or lower the device, but no-go for me.FWIW, the keyboard model is SK-8110.Thanks one and all in advance for any assistance.Reuben

A:Dell Dimension 4600i BIOS Boot Seq - not recognize +/-

I know this sounds simple but have you tried using the [+] or [-] keys on the number pad without using the [Shift] key? That's how it works on this 4600i, same keyboard.

Im thinking it is because I havent got my boot options in the right order. Can anyone help?

I am trying to boot from the floppy drive in a dell dimension 1100 running xp pro but the bios says:
"floppy drive (not installed)"  Not sure what to do.

Another option would be to boot from the optical drive, but the computer will not boot from a new cd (which works on other computers)  that has Ubuntu on it.  It will boot from the windows xp os cd though.  Is it possible to get older cd's so the computer will boot from them. If so, how do you find these older cd's.

Thank-you

A:"floppy drive not installed" in bios in dell dimension 1100

If the computer is an old one then it's possible it is non-PAE. Later versions of Ubuntu do not support a non-PAE CPU.

http://www.technize.net/how-to-check-if-your-processor-supports-pae-nx-and-sse2-for-windows-8-installation/

For the floppy problem open the computer and see if the connections are secure, both the data and power cables. Unplug the power cord. Hold the power button down for 30 seconds. Open the case and touch some bare metal first.

Are you trying to install Ubuntu on the computer? If the CPU does support PAE it is possible to boot Ubuntu from a USB flash drive using Rufus and the Ubuntu iso if the computer supports it. Attach the USB flash drive with Ubuntu and tap F12 at boot to select your boot device or make sure USB boot has top priority in BIOS.

In the process of performing a clean, 'unattended' install of Windows XP on a Dell Dimension E520, I decided to enter the BIOS and clear the existing "System" password as the computer requires several boots during the installation procedure. Upon saving the changes and exiting the BIOS, the computer rebooted and requested (you guessed it) a password. What? I thought I had removed the BIOS password! I turned the computer off, unplugged it, pulled the two-pinned jumper switch for 30 seconds and started the computer once again. Yep, it still wanted the now, *non-existent* password. As this Dell uses a Phoenix BIOS, I inputted several known backdoor passwords; none of which worked. I then shut down, removed the CMOS battery, and left it off for more than three hours. I started this Dell up again, and it *still* wants a password. BTW, this Dell has been turned off, minus the CMOS battery for more than 12 hours. I'm going to leave it off for a total of 24 hours to see if the "capacitor drain" solution will finally clear the BIOS settings, etc. God, how I hate Dells! If someone knows of a more 'radical' solution, please feel free to chime in. At this point, I'm willing to try anything! Thanks!

This Dell Dimension 8300 has 1 GB of RAM and is restored to SP1.
I'm using an add-on 160GB IDE Drive to not mess with the SATA Drive for this upgrade.
When it is upgraded to XP SP2 it becomes unusable.

I've installed and updated and run:
Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2005
Ad-Aware SE Personal

ewido security suite

and I've done a backup to a USB hardfile with Norton Ghost.
Now I'll install SP2 from the Microsoft shipped CD. Its Logfile is at the end.

A:Dell Dimension 8300 broken after SP2 update

I've been working on a Dell Dimension that refuses to update to anything above Windows Xp Sp1 without it causing a continuous BSOD on boot up. I ran the Dell conflict checking software, and it said that there were 6 possible culprits for conflicting drivers. 2 were for Mcafee's, which I promptly uninstalled and removed, and 4 were for the Burner or Burning software, which I also removed, or disabled (renamed) and it still BSOD's on boot up. I thought maybe the problem was specific to SP2, so I went straight to SP3, yet it still does it. I used the Microsoft Offline Crash report, but all that says is that it's possibly a driver, software, or hardware conflict.

Has anyone else ran into this problem, and found a solution? The BSOD message starts with 0x0000008E I believe.

hi tech guy forums,

I have a standard Dell Dimension 3000 pc at home that i regularly use for gaming. At the moment I have a Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 graphics card installed to help with gaming. I am interested in purchasing a new graphics card and was wondering if, in particular if a Nvidia 9600 GT graphics card will fit and comply with my computer. I am also upgrading my RAM form 512MB to 2GB if this helps in any way. If you have any other recommended graphics cards that may work with my pc please let me know.

Thanks

A:Dell Dimension 3000 graphics card update

Your Dimension 3000 only has PCI slots for a graphics card, correct?

(according to dell, and my own experience, likely yes)

Without a PCI-Express or AGP card slot, gaming can not improve very much.

I also have a Dimension 3000 : P4 2.8 GHz - 768mb RAM, with a Geforce 6200 [256mb ddr2] PCI card. When it comes to gaming, it is outperformed by my old 1.4 GHz Athlon XP - 512 RAM - Geforce Ti-4200 [64mb], simply because the older computer has an AGP video slot ... the PCI bus is a VERY limiting factor.

I like to hear forum members opinion.
Just recently fixed the issue with Dell Dimension 4300, machine didn't power up when power switch pressed. I replaced original dead 250W PSU with new 430W dual fan and now comp is running. This PC is:
Intel 845 1.6 GHz internally and 400 MHz externally. 4 DMA channels and SDRAM PC133 512 mb of memory.
I also upgraded USB to 2.0, nice 128MB video card and some other goodies.
Now, I got another stock Dell Dimension 8100 without papers, but I check and this particular one has:
Intel 850 1.4 GHz internally and 400 MHz externally. 8 DMA channels and 384 mb RDRAM of memory. Nothing was done to this machine, and it also have original working 250W PSU.
What better to do? Keep the Dimension 4300 or remove goodies that compatible with 8100 motherboard, including fabricating in, new, dual fan PSU and excluding memory, I assume SDRAM and RDRAM not compatible and transfer to Dimension 8100?
Is 8100 machine more advanced then 4300? I know they both pretty old and outdated. I personally bough 4300 for my dad in 2001. Is 8100 was produced later? I see that CPU is Intel 850 vs 845..
Guys, opinion welcome.
Thanks,
Alex

"Opinions Welcome".......You're Sure Now.....?

I think you should concentrate on finding a computer that is still relevant in this century.

If you'll check put this publication from Dell http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dsleest/ , you'll see the copyright date is 2000, and by 2001 it is in the 8th revision.

So no, I'm not just being mean.

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 1.6ghz 1gb RAM with XP Pro on it for several years now. It has many programs installed on it. I purchased a faster used Dell Dimension 8400 3.6ghz hyperthreading 3gb RAM with XP Pro on it.

My question is simple. My Dimension 2400 has an IDE hard drive and the 8400 has SATA. Rather than spend days re-installing and tweaking all of the programs on the 8400 I tried the following. I used Acronis Easy Migrate 7 to Image the IDE hard drive to the SATA hard drive and installed it into the 8400. It would not boot, I tried a repair install, then while booting I get a blue screen stop Error 0x0000007B. What do I have to do to fix this so it will boot? What else is it looking for?

Hi Great site! I found it on google.

24 hours ago reformatted my Dell Inspiron 2200 laptop which runs xp. After the reformat I re-installed windows xp and the drivers form the cd. Im not sure I got all the drivers because there are a dozens of them, but I think I got them all.

This computer has an internal wireless card. But After the reformat I cant get online anymore.
I cant find that small green icon anymore that shows the wireless connections in my area. I cant figure out how to get it.

heres what Ive done:

1. I downloaded xp service pack 2 on my other computer and ran it on this desktop. But it made no difference I still cant get on.

2. I did the fn + f2 and yes, it shows im on.. But I cant get online.

3. Ive played around in the Network COnnections area and made every single kind of connection, and I still cant connect.

4. I went into control panel / system / hardware profiles and under "Other devices" theres a block of deviced that have the yellow ?/! on them.
But, when I pop my cd in to update the drivers, it doesnt find them on the cd

It goes to the CD and looks at d:\ (where the cd is) and says it cant find the driver. Im using the DELL cd's, but I dont know where on the cd to look.
Then it asks to go online to look for the driver. Grrrr, I cant get online.

Ive been struggling with this for 20 hours and im so beat. any ideas?

thanks!

Hi, here is my problem :

I have a Dell Inspiron 2200 with power issues. The laptop boots fine to bios but it seems like the motherboard doesn't send any power to the Hdd or Cd-rom so the bios send and error of no HDD present.

I though it would be the CMOS battery but the computer doesn't loose the date/time in the bios. I've also tried booting off a usb and it works. I've tried the HDD in my desktop and it works so the drive itself is not an issue.

Does this mean that my motherboard is gone? I am also out of warranty on it.

Thx

Hi All,

I've got a Dell PowerEdge 2200 Server...slow I know (2x300mhz PII) but I don't have the money for anything too fancy. Anyway, it used to be Single OS (Windows XP Professional), but now I've installed Windows 2000 Professional on one of the partitions. I know XP has to have the 1st partition, and it has, but it will only boot to 2000 at the minute.

After selecting XP at the boot menu (Win 2k put this boot menu there) it gets to the bit with the bar at the bottom then complains of missing files .

I'll post more info when I can be bothered to go upstairs and switch the damn thing on (It sounds like a diesel engine running - probably due to the 9" case fan lol)

Do you have speakers connected to it? If you do, and it is a driver issue, try running Windows Update to find drivers.

Short answer. No.

Elaboration:
I assume your graphics card is a DX7 or DX8, and doesn't support DX9 and up.
I also assume you do have the Aero theme, but the transparency/translucency doesn't work, right?

I have Win7 running on my Dell D800 and honestly I don't miss the translucency on the window frames.
I have tried a few tweaks for it, but they mess up some features of Win7.

I do have a little tool that makes the taskbar transparent.
You can even control the amount of transparency with a little slider.
Here a screenshot of my desktop:

If you are interested, you can download it here:
Download Transparent TaskBar, Transparent TaskBar 1.0 Download

After download just run the program.
On the right bottom of your screen (just above the clock), you'll see a little rectangle.
In the rectangle is a little slider you can move up and down to control the amount of transparency.

The settings are saved in the registry, so no need for it to load on windows start.
After you are satisfied you can right click and exit the program.
You'll never have to look at it again, unless you want to change the transparency in which case you just start the program again.

Good luck

Greetz

Ok, this is a laptop, remember they do not run all the time, they are temperature controlled. If you go into the bios, there is a test for the fans and such, run that. If they fail they are bad, if not they seem to be working.

About six months ago, I upgraded the hard drive for my Dell Inspiron 2200 from the original 25 GB to a Western Digital 120 GB. Two weeks ago, the drive failed and I returned the drive to Western Digital for replacement. Today I received the replacement drive and Western Digital has sent me a 250 GB drive. My problem is that the original BIOS (1.10 A03) supports a maximum drive size of 120 GB. I've checked Dell's website and as far as I can determine, none of the BIOS updates address a larger hard drive. Can anyone verify that I am correct about this? I can't email Dell about it, since my warranty has expired. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

My Dell laptop fell off of the surface it was on, and the screen hit a piece of furniture on the way down. (thankfully the floor was carpeted) The screen is obviously shot. When I turn it on, the screen is a mess of pixels (that's the only way I can think of to describe it) aside from a small place at the top. The small, seemingly undamaged part of the screen at the top just displays a message to the effect that Windows XP can't boot up due to a hardware error and the computer must be shut down or restarted.

Two questions:

Assuming nothing else besides the screen was damaged, will be a broken screen cause Windows to refuse to boot?

Also, if I'm able to hook up an external CRT monitor, do I have to do anything to make the laptop find the monitor? It seems that I recall something about having to use one of the F keys plus Fn for that.

A:Dell Inspiron 2200-Busted LCD Screen

For question one, try to plug the laptop into an external monitor and see if it boots up. You might have to press function (Fn) and f8 at the same time until something comes up.

I have a Dell Inspiron 2200 that is about 2 years old. It started to freeze up earlier today while I was on the internet (we have a wireless modem in our apartment). It continued to freeze a few more times but would restart each time normally. I did receive a blue screen/physical memory dump screen once during this that said there was a problem and Windows shut down...Now it freezes almost immediately after start up and is now freezing up during start up while on the Windows XP screen. It does not even begin to open the Windows program anymore. Our wireless modem/router is a Netgear through Charter and we just recently set up our internet through Charter about two weeks ago. A new setup file for Charter was installed by one of their employees. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I do want to recover my files before it's too late. Thanks in advance!

I have an Dell Inspiron 2200 running XP. The battery has died so it's been running plugged in with the battery removed (battery is shot). Yesterday, it just wouldn't start up. The LED indicator lights on the unit come on for a few seconds and then go out. No warning signs previously! As a matter of fact it's been running surprisingly well for an old laptop. I realize it's an old computer, and has probably had it, but it's apparent demise was so sudden!! Any ideas? The charger/power supply brick light is on and since the lights on the computer do come on for a while it is getting power!!!

Just after I posted this, hubby put the battery back in (this unit was given to me by someone who didn't want it anymore) and wonder of wonders it started up, but a screen for recalibrating the battery came up. It's supposed to take several hours so won't know for a while if this is it. Ever hear of recalibrating a battery?? It's a new one on me.

Hello,

This is been a problem that I've not had any success solving on my own. I'm hoping that you all may be able to help. It's been about a year now and I'd really like to have my sound back. To be honest, I tried a few things and didn't keep a log of what I did. I've only been sporadic about attacking this. I did however do a total do over in January with the CD's that came with it. Not sure what the term for it is but it was like turning it one for the first time. Still no sound. I was thinking that those CD's should have the appropriate driver for the audio. In some of my online research, I read that Microsoft would only support the sound card for a limited amount of time and then you'd have to download a file from the manufatcuter of the sound card. I was reluctant because I wasn't sure if that was accurate info. So, if there's anyone out there that has heard of this problem or had experience with this I'd be happy to hear your comments.

Thank for listening!

Inspiron 2200 laptop wont power up, no LEDs, no display, no HD activity. The laptop may have been rolled on by someone while it was on a bed. Took the laptop apart and cannot find any visible mechanical damage or electrical connections broken- everything looks ok. Power is coming in through the DC connector (16.5vdc) and power is on the motherboard in several places on a number of ICs (+9vdc, +3vdc). Power on switch contact closures are working as they should when the power on switch is pressed but I do not know what circuitry the switch contacts feed. I do not have a motherboard schematic or layout and do not know how the power up sequence is initiated when he power on button is depressed (How processor gets it power, HD gets it power, etc).

Any advice is appreciated.

Hi there, Sorry I have not been around for a while.. due to the fast pace life takes us!

I just wanted a second opinion on something..

I have an old Dell Inspiron 2200 which I use as a bit of work horse, recently, and completely randomly the RAM in the expansion slot gave out,and so I was stuck with the 256mb on board memory until I got hold of a new stick. Once replaced the computer was up and going at full speed just fine. However less than a week later the new stick seems to have given out.

I can't test it because I have no other device which takes the memory, and I can't load the computer with the stick in to run MemTest or anything because It won't got that far. Just shows the POST screen (which comes up very disarranged and wavy) and then shows a memory address issue screen and goes no further.

I don't know much about circuitry, does this sound like the motherboard giving out or have I possibly just got unlucky and the RAM needs to go back?

Any thoughts appreciated,

Thanks

Matt

Which combination of keys do I use for a screen shot on the Dell Inspiron 2200?

A:Dell Inspiron 2200 Screen Shot

You can capture a screen shot on any Windows computer by hitting Print Screen key. (look on top row, right of function keys). Some keyboards might abbreviate it something like PrtSc. This "copies" the screen image. Then just Paste it into a program like Start->Accessories->Paint

A:Dell Inspiron BIOS Update

Bios updates require special installation and must be done alone. It cannot be done with other drivers. Bios updates should be done before updating to win 10 not after. Use caution updating bios since it can brick your computer.
You should not be updating the drivers yourself. Go to Dell Drivers and downloads and let the scanner tell you what windows 10 drivers you need--

If you tried clearing BIOS by removing the battery and pressing / holding the power button for at least 10 sec, then your motherboard is probably bricked and will need to be replaced...

My cable company recently upgraded its modems (oh, the fun...not!) There are 3 computers in my home, one which is connected directly to the modem, and 2 on wireless connections. The other wireless computer is maintaining an Internet connection without any problems, mine isn't.

When it tries to automatically sign on to the network, the wireless connection gets as far as "Acquiring network address", then stops. However, it will successfully connect to another network that is within range, so I'm pretty sure my wireless adapter isn't bad. Resetting the modem isn't producing any results.

Mine is a Dell Inspiron 2200 running Windows XP SP3. I'm using the wireless adapter that came installed with the computer, my anti-virus (Norton 2012) is up to date, and Windows Firewall is turned on. According to the cable company, my OS is supposed to be compatible with the new modem. The modem is an Arris Telephony Gateway.

Any ideas on possible causes and solutions?

Hi all, yesterday I tried to update my Dell XPS12 (9Q33 mid 2013) BIOS to the last version (A08). During the installation, the laptop remained stuck in "EC programming" at 50%..I waited two hours but nothing changed and my PC was unusable: completely blocked, no keyboard,no touch and even the windows clock was blocked.
So, as I read in a lot of BIOS-related threads, I removed the AC adaptor and let it discharge completely..some users resolved with this workaround, and their PC's worked well after.
Unfortunately, my XPS12 doesn't want to power up anymore..I also tried to put the .hdr file of the BIOS in a USB stick and tried to power up with "end" button pressed. It powers up and the fans are working, but nothing happens then..Am I using the wrong procedure to repair the BIOS?

Thanks in advance,

Fabio

Hello guys, I'm new to this forum. And I hope I find a solution here.

It all started when I was updating drivers and came across updating the BIOS on my working Dell XPS 400. After Updating it, the BIOS was flashed. Once it rebooted a Post showing came up and at the bottom it said "BIOS updated successfully. AFTER that the computer made a total of 6 long beeeeeeeps with no display, monitor light is orange not green. So I shut down the computer and try to turn it on...it turns on for a half of a second and powers down...after 3 seconds it turns on...however no Display...no light on the keyboard or mouse..I just get those 6 long beeeeeeps one after the other.

I tried the following:
-removing battery for 30secs=Did not work
-removing battery for 30mins=Did not work
-Clearing the CMOS, moving the jumpers from 1/2 to 2/3=Did not work

I was read some similar problems and most say the Mobo could be dead. How could a simple BIOS update cause this. There has to be a solution. Anyhow I yet have to try removing the RAM, Vcard, any other attached hardware inside to see what happens. I cannot hit any keys on a keyboard that does not respond aswell..so that holding the insert key=Did not work

I went to the Dell product page for my computer - Dell XPS 8500, and ran the scan to check for updates.  3 updates, one of them for BIOS.  I ran the updates and initiated the BIOS update.  Midway through it appeared to get hung up and my machine froze.  I left it for an hour, came back and still no luck.
So I rebooted the machine and of course now it won't boot up.  I have power and can hear the fan, but no lights on the box and no screen input.
Looking though the manual and on this forum, I've tried resetting the BIOS jumpers, and removing the CMOS battery.  When I rebooted I saw lights on the box this time but it shut down after 30 seconds, and now back to the same problem.
From what I read on this forum I'm SOL unless I buy a new motherboard.
Just thought I'd check if anyone had any other suggestions.  If not, where can I get  a new motherboard for this?  The product page for my model doesn't list it as an option...

Thanks for your help!
Jason

A:Failed BIOS update - Dell XPS 8500

When did your warranty expire? If it expired less than 6 months ago, you might be able to get Dell to fix it, assuming they can get the board. They had a policy to replace a board -one time only- if it failed a Dell BIOS update within 6 months after the end of warranty. I don't know if that policy still exists.
Those are all different revisions of the same motherboard. I don't know what the differences are. They could be as simple as a different supplier for one of the components on the board all the way up to a change in the circuit layout.
Maybe Dell Spare Parts can tell you about the differences among the 3, or at least tell you which is the most recent revision,  even if they don't have the boards available...?
All three support the H77 chipset which is a key issue.
Look at your motherboard for the sticker to see what version you have now. If you can't find out about specific differences, you may want to get one that's the same version, assuming it's one of the choices available.
You should look elsewhere if Impact doesn't have the revision you want and/or for price comparisons. And always ask if the board is new, used, refurbished and about the warranty.

A:DELL Wants To Update My System BIOS: Questions On, Please ?

The BIOS (Basic Input Output System) is the chip that controls your system during boot up until it is "transferred" to the OS itself.
(That's a nutshell description, but should suffice here).

It is not the OS, but the SW "Guts" of your computer (Motherboard).

Whether or not to upgrade:

First, what does the update correct? They should list that info, or link to it.

In general, I'm the type to always update the BIOS if a new firmware is released, that said though, my mainboard has three separate BIOS's that I can switch to, so if one is borked by an update, or changes I make, I can go back to the original (I leave one on the original for that purpose).

If all is well on your system, you do not have to perform the update at all, and that may be the best advice I can give you, especially if you are questioning it to begin with, but if you are willing to do it, depending on what it may change for your system, it may be worthwhile.

I'll review it and post later, or others may chime in as they see fit.

UPDATE: I checked the Dell site for your system, but don't see an update for today, that's not to say anything malicious is going on, but can you give more details on the pop up?

What version it wants to update you to? Etc.
You could also boot into your BIOS and give us the version you are on, if you are several versions "behind" the most current one, it may also be beneficial to do it, again depending on what I outlined above.

I am looking to buy an inverter for my Dell. The ones listed on ebay just say that they work on my model. They don't list an exact number. If they do, it doesn't match mine. Some are listed as 15" whereas mine is 14.1" My inverter says V12144T. Some of theirs are off a few numbers. The question is are they close enough. If the ad says it will work on a 2200, do you think it will?
Thanks

Hello Tech Guys,
Our office bought several computers over the past few days and I've been given the responsibility of setting them up. I AM NOT A COMUTER TECHNICIAN!

Everything was going fine until I tried to update the BIOS on one of the machines.

I had updated the BIOs on other machines with no problems - this time the BIOS update has frozen at 13%.

Please let me know what I can do to safely power down the computer and reboot/retry updating the BIOS.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi
I have an old Dell E6410 Laptop, which i need to BIOS upgrade in orden to use my SSD disk.
I download, and I try to upgrade, which runs fine, but when it comes to the auto restart that should do the actual update, it will not auto restart...
I'll have to push the power button, and it starts with a not upgraded BIOS.
Does anyone know why auto restart is not working on the laptop?
I can't do a autorestart at all, i allways have to push the power button..

A:dell inspiron n5110 bios update failure

Solution fo recovery bios Dell N51101. Download the latest firmware from the Dell support2. Save the exe and create a shortcut with the following parameter: " /writehdrfile"3. Start the created shortcut and it will create a n5110a11.hdr file rename the file to N5110.hdr4. Create a shortcut exe file with the following parameter: " /writeromfile"5. Start the created shortcut and it will create a n5110a11.rom file rename the file to DQ15A11.rom6. Copy both file "N5110.hdr" and "DQ15A11.rom" to a FAT formatted pendrive's root folder7. Remove the charger and Battery from the laptop8. Plug In the pendrive9. Press & hold END10. Connect the charger (still hold END)11. The notebook starts automatically and shows the recovery screen12. Press enter and wait until finish the flashing13. Press esc to restart14. Hopefully problem solved

My current BIOS version is A05 (3-jan-13).  I want to update it to A14.
But i am getting ther error message 'allocate memory for security flash fail!'

Could it be becausr of this?

A:Dell Inspiron 15R 5521 BIOS update error.

No -- 5G is more than enough free space for a BIOS flash.  Is the system failing to recognize the AC adapter (F2 at powerup to check)?
If it is, the BIOS won't flash - this is a hardware problem a BIOS update won't fix -- either the adapter, the DC jack or the mainboard is bad.

Hi, I have repeated experience of failed BIOS firmware update on Dell e5570. More precisely the part
"Sending Intel (R) Management Engine Firmware Update" always hangs on 100% and never finishes.  The annoying thing is that laptop cannot be shutdown via power button (even with the long press) and I have to wait hours till my battery dies :-(
Im trying to update BIOS from 1.6.3 to 1.7.3. In the end, I have 1.7.3 BIOS version, but Embedded Controller stays on A07 instead of A11 so I got my PC into middle of versions :-( First broken thing I noticed is WiFi always turned off after wake from sleep or after startup.
Dell support, please help. I need new BIOS (and Embedded Controller) to resolve some NVMe and other issues with the laptop.
Thanks, M.

I just got a used M4600, and the currently installed bios is A08. When I try to update to A16, it restarts, says it's updating firmware, but fails at 0%. It gives no reason, and no error code as far as I can tell. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide.

A:Bios update failed - Dell Precision M4600

That is NOT the issue! There is nothing wrong with the M4600 motherboards per se.
Everybody has been trying to find why when trying a BIOS upgrade, the system immediately fails with a basic "BIOS Update Failed" and no specific error code or more explanation. The answer is in the PDF document below - that is the message displayed when BIOS authentication fails!
You just have to look up the Dell Signature Firmware 'feature' that was introduced into a number of laptop incl the M4600.  Download PDF doc. That was a feature introduced per NIST requirements.
In a nutshell, they changed the way BIOS authenticates a BIOS file before it will use it to update the BIOS & EC firmware. The M4600 is in the list of "Legacy Systems" where this was introduced. Basically, these systems did NOT have the Signature Firmware when produced.
Version A04 introduced this feature. After you install that, you will have an option to turn the Signature Firmware requirement On (default is Off). Once turned On, it can NOT be turned off!
The problem starts in BIOS ver A08. Something in the code is wrong. Because on some M4600s it updates the BIOS AND Activates the Signature Firmware requirement. After that, the system will NOT authenticate ANY other BIOS versions so you will NOT be able to upgrade past version 8!
I manage many, many systems for a company. I am currently sitting on 33 (yes, that many) M4600 with that exact same situation!

Hi,
Any advice?
I have a 9010 SFF that was working fine, except that it would not install the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.  Repeatedly, about 30% through the update it failed with a BSOD. I tried several times.
Somewhere I read that the BIOS might need updating so I headed over to DELL support.  I let the website automatically detect my system and it found a recommended BIOS update, version A24.
I initiated the BIOS update from the website and it seemed to run successfully but when the PC rebooted it hung half way through POST.
On a second attempt to start the machine - nothing - no display, no light, just will not start.
I tried clearing the NVRAM as indicated on the DELL website here: www.dell.com/.../SLN284985
I tried both the RTCRST jumper method and the battery removal method.
The result - it now continuously reboots but still no POST, no display, nothing.
I should add that during the original BIOS update, the PC had a Quadro 600 graphics card and a LSI 9200-8e SAS adapter card inside. They had both been working faultlessly and were removed when I tried to reset the BIOS NVRAM.
Any suggests on what next to recover my "bricked" desktop?
Andy

Flashing the BIOS with only 10% battery and no AC current is an invitation for making a brick. I recommend you do not attempt flashing the BIOS that way.Does the laptop currently boot to Windows or at least POST?Is the charger branded to the laptop? Did the charger ever work with this laptop?Has this battery previously worked in that laptop? How old is the battery?message edited by OtheHill

hello all,

i was trying to remove the bootup password for a dell inspiron 2200 notebook and finally managed to remove it by taking out the mb and locating the atmel chip 24c05 (located on the bottom of the mb next to the memory socket).

i found that you need to turn on the power, and immediately when you see the screen flicker, short out the pins. the laptop turns off automatically. then remove the paperclip (i didnt have a paperclip so i used a staple in case anyone cares) and reboot the laptop. it was in that "fn" mode so i took it out by hitting [fn] + [X].

now i can enter the bios fine, but there is no info displayed for the service tag, ownership tag, and asset tag. also, the HD and and cdrw dont appear in the bios.

i removed the hd and placed it in an external hd enclosure (for 2.5" drives) and plugged it into my pc and i can read the files fine so the hard drive definitely works.

has anyone run into this problem before? any help would be greatly appreciated. this is not my laptop so i'm not sure if they ever did work or not before the password situation.

thanx for any help,

gabriel

Hello,
So as it says in the title i have a 4 years old Inspiron 7720, and for the larger portion of that period of time it worked like a charm.
However lately it started doing some quirky things.
About two weeks ago my GPU (GeForce GT 650M) just disappeared from my Device Manager. I tried updating my GPU drivers, updating Windows (10) but it didn't seem to change anything. So i did some digging and found this: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19498450
Apparently I'm not the only one who encounterd this problem and there is a solution.HOWEVER, whenever I try to flash my BIOS an error pops up which reads: "ERROR 105 - Command line error! Status = 105."
I searched and found more users that experienced this problem, but the only solution I managed to find was reinstalling the OS, which is quite a drastic measure.
Is there any other way to fix this error?Thank you

A:Dell Inspiron 7720 GPU not showing AND BIOS update Error 105

It appears your BIOS may need to be updated.  What is the current version you're using? You should update them in order without skipping to the highest first.  Here's some information that may be helpful.

I replaced the hard drive in my Dell Dimension E521, with a new 320GB (non Dell Specific) WD unit, and loaded Windows 7 Pro (again, non Dell specific version). The old hard drive was bad.

I downloaded the 1.1.11 BIOS update (http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDeta...) to a bootable USB flash drive. When I boot the computer off of the flash drive, it comes up with the C: thing and does nothing else.

Am I supposed to type something in there, to get it to update the BIOS or access the file on the flash drive?

I'm kind of new to this stuff, but learning...

I want to update the BIOS, to be able to install the AMD Athlon 64 X 2 6000+ processor. The current version is 1.1.6.

Thanks in advance for any advice...

Hi,
I have a new XPS 13 (Service tag 64K2KC2 ePSA Build 4304.07) that I have only had since the 16th of this month.
All has been fine until a couple of hours ago. A Dell message popped on the lower right hand corner to of the screen to tell me there was a Dell bios update. I selected to install the bios update and now the laptop will not boot.
I get the Dell logo and then a plain blue screen.
Any ideas how to recover the system?

Thanks,

Richard

When will Dell enable Intel Speed Shift via a BIOS update? All the BIOS update requires is requires is writing 1 to MSR 0x770!
Speed Shift was fully supported by Intel and Microsoft in 2015 (1 year ago!). It makes the CPU much more responsive (particularly in gaming and real-time tasks) and costs nothing.
In the meantime, anyone can run software manually to enable Speed Shift but you need to relaunch the software every time your computer sleeps or turns off, so that is inconvenient. But the boost in performance is worth the effort.
I have manually enabled SpeedShift via software such as ThrottleStop or just writing 1 to MSR 0x770.
Dell - can you get Speed Shift into the next BIOS revision?!?!

Hello and Thanks in Advance.

I am experiencing BSOD crashes and a buggy driver could be the culprit. Dell recommends updating the BIOS prior to the drivers.

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-7/982135-learned-source-problem-bsod-but.html

I checked Dell's website and the current BIOS for my machine is A08 and my system at present is A05, so maybe this should be done anyway.

The BIOS update is just a .exe file.and its description is "Dell Computer Flash BIOS Upgrade."

I am afraid to run the BIOS update in "normal mode" because of these persistent crashes. Who knows what state my computer will be in if it crashes/freezes during a BIOS update.

My computer runs fine in "Safe Mode." Would it be OK to update my BIOS through Safe Mode so that I don't have to worry about my computer crashing in the middle of the update? Does the computer care if this is done through safe or normal mode? Should I log in as an administrator to do this also?

If anyone has any advice, I am all ears. Thanks!

Chris
