I have the best luck with computers ever. My brother wanted me to format his oldschool compaq presario 5000 computer so I formatted with the win XP setup disk, when I went to restart to start installing windows after the format it takes me to a blank screen that reads:
"Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1) NTLDR: couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)"

I have booted with floppy and fdisk, fdisk /mbr, formatted about a million times using FAT and NTFS file systems, I have deleted all partitions, did everythinig I can think of.

Does anyone have any idea of how I might solve this and install windows? I know the HDD isn't shot because I can put it in my other comp and actually do a full win install, but when I place it back in the compaq, it brings me to the same error screen.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

one more thing, I am kinda a n00b at this sorta stuff so any ideas please give me the *hold my hand* explination and guide me what to do with step by step instructions, thanks again guys!

Check in your BIOS and make sure you have the right HDD displayed. It would be best to set it to auto. Also you could try setting the BIOS back to the default values.

If you've done a fresh install of Windows XP Professional you will need to also install the audio drivers.

They're available from the support section of Compaq's website. Head to the support area and enter your model details to be shown the correct drivers.

Hi all,

I recently began playing games again on my home pc (Compaq Presario 5660au: Windows XP, GeForce 2 (64mb), 256mb Ram, P4 1.9, 250W PSU), but noticed that every few minutes any game (including old games that used to work fine such as Castle Wolfenstien) would lag real slow and the sound would do the same, but not the music. These games were all played single player so its not a network issue. After about 10 seconds it would come good and then do it again a few minutes later, very frustrating. So here's what i did:

1. Upgraded Ram (256-->1024), which didnt help the problem (although notepad now flies on this machine)
2. Upgraded the video card from a Nvidia GeForce 2 (64mb) Compaq consumer to a Gigabyte ATI Radeon 9600 (128mb). And the graphics look so much better in any game, but still the same lagging problem as with the old setup.
These are in no particular order:
3. Tried Updating the Bios (and tried changing all the settings in bios - although compaq bios is extremely limited)
4. Changed every setting for the ATI Card to low
5. Upgraded to the latest drivers (and tried the omega drivers) - whilst uninstalling the previous ones
5. Changed every in game setting to low
6. Disabled / Enabled the sound card
7. Reformatted the HDD
8. Defragmented the HDD
9. Changed the ATI setting from 2x AGP to 4x AGP (supported by this system)
10. Probably some more that i cant remember right now

If anyone has any suggestions please help!

A:Video Lag problems with a Compaq Presario

Tugz,

I'd have to guess that every few minutes some resource hog application is monopolizing a big slice of your PC.

If you are playing these games offline, then use CTL-ALT-DEL and END all the apps that you can't justify running including Virus, firewall, etc. Disconnect from the net, and play for a while. See if you still get the periodic lagging. If yes, comeback with a list of the processes that you left running. If no, then one of the ones you killed is the culprit.

Experiment with them by removing them one at a time with game play in between to test out the effect of removal until you find the bad-boy.

I have just installed a fresh Windows XP SP2 on my Compaq Presario Desktop.

I need to download the video drivers, sounds drivers, etc.

The video card is the ATI Radeon Xpress 200 Graphics Card. The corresponding driver on the HP site is
sp26629.

The download and extraction works fine. However, it then keeps failing with the following error.

You must be logged on as an administrator to install this update. Update has been cancelled. (9999).

There have been several postings of this nature on the web.
Ok, I have logged in as administrator (yes, I do have admin privileges), my PC has no virus, I've cleaned up the registry with TweakNowRegCleaner, and my PC has no spyware.

What else can I try?

Thanks,

I've seen this problem with the ATI Radeon Xpress 200 quite a bit. There's no easy fix for it that we've found at work although we usually manage to force an install after a couple of days of trying different drivers. Maybe try the drivers from the ATI website rather than the Compaq drivers?

The computer would turn on go to the Compaq splash screen with function options then proceed to a black screen with a blinking cursor. After that it would just go completely black then pop up to the Compaq screen and repeat this cycle. So I arnt looking for some online help and the HP site told me to unplug my "IDE" cables. And being the complete techtard I am, I unpluged the power cables as well. Now I have plugged them back in, put the panel back on, and when I push the power button nothing happens. I bought this computer... stupidly i might add... from an unnamed (because i used to work there and recommend their business) rent to own store. For the run of the mill daily family pc it had been great! Now... when i bought this pc i ran the VISTA (<--- still leaves a bad taste in my mouth!!) home basic Operating system that came on it out of the box. After upgrading the 512MB of ram to 2GB and discovering vistas ram hungry method of operation... i chose like many others to downgrade to a more stable and familiar windows xp. I of course had friends that hooked me up with XP Black, Im sure you've heard of it by now. That runs on XP pro platform and ran great with the exception of the initial gathering drivers that seemed to not be available for my pc.

As i Discovered through this adventure, my computer had been built with just enough snuff to run basic vista... uuhhhgg. Also i learned that this pc's motherboard (very simular to an asus) needed vista compatible drivers as the hardware from hp was designed for this VISTA computer. I'm not happy with hp for such attempts to hinder the "shade tree" Geeks. for stated events i had to replace the cd/rw-dvd rom combo drive because that was one driver that was unavailable, PERIOD.

Now... I had a HDD error and i slapped this drive in off an E machines pc with xp home on it. i have done nuthing really except clean the drive of malicious software and install a few drivers for my Compaq. now comes the Curren... Read more

I don't know if this is something that we can assist you with. If I read everything correctly, the system was running XP black, which is a pirated copy of WinXP. Now, currently you are running the machine fromn a Emachine HDD (with XPHome preinstalled) and that is also a form of piracy since you are breaking the OEM license agreement.

Hi folks.

Great forum, full of detailed info so I hope someone can help.

I have a Compaq Presario 5650LA (it's very old) and I am trying to install Western Digital 160 GB Caviar hard drive, model - WD1600AABB. The hard drive can be seen in the bios but no matter what jumper selection I use the machine just posts (You can see the Compaq softpaq bios screen and enter it if desired) then sits with a blinking cursor in the top left of the screen.

I have swapped jumpers, ide cables, tried both channels, disconnected the CD and floppy drive, removed all extraneous cards, swapped the mem modules about, removed and reseated the BIOS battery (it was OK) and updated the BIOS to the latest version but it won't boot. I have also used another (so that's two new drives used) identical drive but it did not help. I have tried seagate, WD, etc: hard drives with no difference and all the drives are fine on another machine.

Here's the crux: When I flashed the BIOS it would not boot from it's own floppy drive, so I swapped it out but had the same problem. But, when I tried an external USB drive it booted OK and I was able to flash the BIOS. So I have a machine that will not boot from floppy or HD but will boot from CD, Hirem's boot CD, etc. Even when I tried a HD on the CD ide channel I got nothing.

If you boot with an XP cd it will find the drive and begin to install until the first reboot when the HD fails to boot again. The hard drive can also be found and t... Read more

This computer has an ESS 1869 Audio Drive sound device installed and with the latest drivers. It originally came with Windows 95, but was upgraded to Windows 98SE a couple of years ago.

The problem seems to be with the Volume Control master slider returning to the "down" position when you close it. When the Volume Control is kept open and the master slider is kept in the "up" position, it will play sound very briefly and then fade out until you can just barely hear it.

I have checked all the Volume Control and Multimedia settings, have run the DirectX 9.0 dxdiag.exe tool, and have even even changed speakers, but I cannot resolve the problem.

I would really appreciate some assistance in this matter.

A:Sound Problems With Compaq Presario 5030

you can try uninstalling your sound drivers in device manager, then reboot and have windows install the sound drivers again.

If that doesn't fix the problem, I suspect you have some audio software that is controlling your sound. For instance, I had a customer once that had multiple media players installed such as Real Player, Winamp, MusicMatch. If they are all trying to access your sound files, there could be a conflict. Try uninstalling some and leave your favorite one, this may fix your problem.

If all else fails, do a restore!

About 6-7 months ago I purchased a Compaq Presario F500,and a few weeks ago it started to act up. While in the middle of using it the screen would shut off(go Black). This would happen occasionally, until recently,it went black and wouldn't come back on at all. There was power to everything else.I read on HP's site to try removing the battery, and hold the power button down .This worked, but when I powered up the computer, and used it for about 15 minutes, the screen went black.I heard from a friend, who had a similar problem, that it may be the video card. Could this be true,or an overheating problem. I haven't purchased a cooling pad yet.

A:Compaq Presario F500 Video Problems

Sounds like your on the right track, probably is a heat problem. If you're using the computer and you notice that the fan picks up speed (you can usually hear it do so) it means that it's trying to cool itself down. Do you notice something like this happening before the screen goes dark? I highly doubt the video card itself is faulty but there's always the possibility I suppose. You would most likely see graphical anomalies on screen if that were the case.

Ok, to start, the system that im having problems with is a Compaq Presario V5000 (whichis stated in the title). I have done all that I can possibly do to help this thing. I have followed other solutions and im still having the same problem. Here is a list of what I have done:

Reseated the Ram
Reseated the processor
Replaced the CMOS battery
Bought new RAM and used all possible combinations in both RAM modules
Removed HDD
Replaced HDD
Formated HDD
Bought new battery and AC Adapter
Reapplied thermal paste to processor

I have done all of the above and the problem still continues to happen. What it does is, I will start the laptop. All the lights will come on, But nothing appears on the screen for about 15 minutes. When the COMPAQ logo finally appears, I go to setup. This is where I will start having problems. I cant really do to much of anything here. The laptop will freeze with a whole bunch of artifacts all over the screen. There is nothing wrong with the HDD, RAM, CPU, LCD, or DVD drive. I dont think its the motherboard. Sometimes it will boot my XP cd and it will begin the installation, then freeze . I really dont know what to do anymore. Please help me, any attempts will be greatly appreciated.

A:Compaq Presario V5000 Boot problems

I have worked on many V5000s. Good solid machines. Try this:

1. Unplug. Remove the main battery and CMOS battery. Wait 15 minutes. Reinstall the CMOS battery.

2. Remove HDD, DVD, one memory module. Unplug the touch pad (small ribbon conn under KB). Connect AC adapter. Boot to DOS with an external USB floppy. Twist the case gently. Press on the MB. Does the machine work normally? Keep it on for 30 minutes.

If YES, add back the touch pad, memory, DVD and HDD one at a time. Repeat the tests. If the machine dies, yiu have probably found the bad module.

If NO, you most likely have a bad MB. It is much cheaper to replace the MB with a good used one from Ebay than mess with the bad MB. There are several part numbers that will work. Just match your model category -Intel FF or DF and AMD FF or DF. ( FF = Full Featured and DF = Defeatured.)

Good luck.

Keyboard and/or mouse quit working or dont work
Monitor doesn't get a signal or i get a message saying invalid sync
Freezes at Bios screen(where you see Press f1 to... options)
Freezes while booting
It only shows i have 384 mb Ram(when the chip says 512)

I have flashed the bios
unplugged for several hours(not a jumper or battery i can find)
Reinstalled windows
cleaned keyboard and mouse contacts
removed all unnecessary hardware(modem, dvd drive ect.)

I do not have to save this computer but id like to turn it into a server of some sort(dns webhosting)

Hi,

Whenever I boot up my Presario it does things in this order:

Starts making the fan noise

Displays the red Compaq logo

The Compaq logo gets weirdly distorted

It reboots and does it all over again!
I can't get into the BIOS or any other preferences, and I can't get to the Control Panel either. When I try to put in a recovery cd, it spits it back out and goes nuts again. Sometimes, if I leave it alone for a while (about 45 minutes- 3 hours) it lasts longer when booting and can actually get to Windows XP. Then, after about 10 minutes it reboots and goes nuts all over again. Here are my system specs:

AMD Athlon XP Processor 2000+ operating at 1.67GHz
2x 60GB Ultra DMA Hard Drive
256MB DDR SDRAM Memory
Integrated ProSavageDDR KM266 graphics with 32MB shared video memory

I know that the CMOS battery, the RAM stick, and the hard drive are OK.

What is going on with my Presario???

A:Compaq Presario 6320US Boot Problems

Well even with a dead battery and without a hard drive installed you should be able to POST and go into the BIOS. How do you know that the RAM is good though?

Sounds like it could be an overheating problem. The computer detects a high temperature and shuts down to prevent damage. In a perfect world it should shut off and stay off, but I've seen computers do an endless on/off cycle. In fact, I had a Dell that would endlessly go on and off until I yanked the power plug. You said if you leave the computer off for 1-3 hours then it'll stay on for longer. Well, the longer it's off the cooler it'll get which means the longer it can stay on before overheating.

Have you opened the case and looked inside yet? If it's dusty inside, the first thing you'd wanna do is dust it out good. Make sure all the heatsinks, fans, power supply, and all case air vents are completely clear of dust. The second thing I would check is the CPU heatsink. I'm pretty sure that CPU's heatsink has a metal retaining clip that latches onto (usually) a plastic bracket. The plastic bracket could have snapped, which would mean the heatsink isn't properly mounted anymore. That would cause the CPU to heat up to dangerous levels, which would cause the computer to shut down.

Those are the first two things I would look for and try to rule out. After that, it could be a dying power supply. Or the thermal grease could have dried out, which would mean you'd have to re... Read more

This laptop was recently given to a friend of mine. She was told that it would just keep freezing up or shutting off. She brought it to me to check for her because if wouldn't boot. I used a boot disk and got it booted and it seemed ok. Gave it back and she had it a wk and brought it back with problem of freezing up and then no boot. I just put HWmonitor on it and the temps are running from 62-75 C. She said it was constantly doing windows updates and the last one it wouldn't re-boot. I have a plastic think I use with my laptop that has 3 small fans on it and you put it under the laptop. I have had it on over an hour and it has gone up from 70-75 for a high. I finally got it to come up with using Chk Dsk and it did several repairs. That's all I have done with it so far. Does anyone have any suggestions? Over the past few weeks I've been getting intermittent BSOD crashes with "unexpected IRQ" or "page fault in non-page area" errors. These were often accompanied on reboot by POST beep code 1-3-4-3, error in first 512K of base memory.

Memtest86 fails after a few passes with the unexpected IRQ error.

Replaced both internal and external OEM memory modules (Hynix 512MB PC2700S DDR 333MHz) with two PNY 1GB PC2700 333MHz modules.

Things are worse now. Getting POST beep codes of 1-4-1-1 and 3 and 2, all having to do with memory.

Questions: 1) What is the significance of "S" in PC2700S? 2) Are the internal and external modules the only memory to worry about, or is there some other motherboard memory that could be causing this? 3) Suggestions?

Thank you.

Sounds like the flexible connector between the screen and motherboard has given up, probably with use?

It would need disassembly and replacement of the flexible mylar circuit. Could possibly just be a connection issue at one end or the other, which still requires disassembly.

Repairing a COMPAQ Presario running Vista Basic.
My problems are that the OS wont boot fully, it stops and then freezes.

Then on restart BIOS will run through and give me a choice to repair or boot normally in which I select repair which then runs through until it gets to

!! 0xc0190036 !! 3005/67034 (icardagt.exe)

Here it stops and blinks the text infinitely.

I would provide an HJT log but I can't even get in to do that.
Considering that I can get the BIOS to go through I'm assuming software but if anyone has any ideas that it may be hardware please share. The only hardware that I believe would be a problem at the moment would be the HDD, however it ran efficiently when I was extracting data from it.

Any help regarding this would be appreciated

Hi all. I'm new here but not what you would call new to computers. I have a Compaq Presarion laptop sitting behind me that is giving me fits! A friend of mine got it as a gift. Its got a 1.5 ghz celeron processor, 256 mb of ram, and a 40 gig hard drive.

Here's the problem. When he got it, windows was corrupted and wouldn't boot to windows without a ton of error messages. He told me to wipe the drive clean and re-install XP. He handed me a fresh, recently purchased version of Win XP home and told me to do away with HP's proprietary version of XP. I figured, easy enough. I've done this kind of thing many times with many older computers.

Well, here's the problem. It won't let me do a full format from the XP CD during the first few pages of setup. I can do a quick format of the drive and continue on. However, during setup, I get errors. I've formatted and reinstalled the OS several different times, not always getting the same error message. I completed the install once (with errors) and when I got to the desktop, there was no start button or system clock .... or even the usual recycle bin icon. Nothing was there .... I could ctrl+alt+delete to reboot, but that was the only way to shut the system down.

What is different about these compaq presario notebooks. How can you do a low level format .... or a full format for that matter. How can you get it to take a regular microsoft version of windows XP? I've already wasted countless hours fighting with this laptop.

A:Problems installing Win XP on Compaq Presario 2500 Laptop

Bump ... there appears to be no pattern to the errors I'm experiencing. Can anyone help?

Hello,

I am new to forum. Spent some time the last couple of days trying to get my daughter's Compaq Presario 6330us working. Machine came with two CD/DVD drives, a floppy drive, and a Maxtor 60GB hard drive.

She was not able to boot XP from her hard drive. Her boyfriend had previously tried to recover from recovery CDs, but with no luck. I tried installing a new hard drive (Seagate 160GB) with new one as primary master and old one as primary slave. That didn't work. Didn't recognize either drive. Then took out old drive and used new drive only. Was then able to recover the system. Worked fine for a few hours.

Tried using it later the same day. It had gone to sleep after I thought I had it fixed and reinstalled a lot of her software. When Itried to wake it up, the system froze. Upon reboot, system was no longer recognizing the new drive. It wouldn't let me do another recovery since it can't find a hard drive to recover to. Just keep getting Boot Failure message. Tried new IDE cabling but didn't help. The BIOS is just not detecting the hard drive. Recognizes the 2 CD/DVD drives and floppy drive fine.

I suspect the IDE controller for the hard drive(s) is bad. Can I just install a new card with a new controller rather than repalcing motherboard? Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

A:Compaq Presario 6330 Hard Drive Problems

Anything you do with a Presario 6330 is likely to be trouble and disappointment.
I would replace the EIDE cables, then download all the patches, BIOS, and other drivers and downloads from the www.hp.com site for Presario 6330US. Obtain a copy of WXP Service Pack 2 from Microsoft just in case you can use it ($3.95 from Microsoft).
Give it your best shot with the BIOS and Patch... if it still doesn't detect the drive, consider this an opportunity to get something decent. If it does detect, reformat and reinstall everything, then the entire download set, then run the Windows Service Pack 2 disc. You should then be ok.
This computer has been almost as much trouble as the eMachines desktops, and the failures are too often not fixable.
If money is a problem, take a look at www.pcsurplusonline.com and others that have ruggedized used Dells and IBMs... better than a cheap new one... although you will have to find Windows somewhere.

Hi,

One of my Compaq Presarios is doing strange things. When I plug it in, it automatically turns on. When it reaches the Compaq logo, it just stays there and nothing happens. One thing I notice is that the CPU light doesn't blink at all.

Does anybody have an idea of what is going on?

EDIT: The most recent time I plugged it in the fan started making this horrible noise (sort of like a high-pitched motor running at top speed combined with screaming).

Hello Tech Support Guy forums! I'm wondering if you can help me with a problem.

My girlfriend has a Compaq Presario CQ56 laptop, but the screen broke and she replaced it with a CQ57, which I guess is the next most advanced model in the line. However, the skype connection would drop after just a few minutes and then drop repeatedly afterward every couple seconds. Usually, all connected services (like AIM) would drop off too.

So here's the weird thing - she returned it and got a replacement, and the replacement is doing the same thing. The CQ56, on the same network, can keep a skype call going for hours. But the 57 drops off fast, and we've tried two different units. I thought that maybe it could be a defective laptop the first time, but twice?

Anyway, does anyone have some troubleshooting suggestions?

would you post the following when its working and then repeat all the tests when it disconnects

is this connected by wifi if so also add the xirrus tests

------------------------------------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results in a reply here

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results to a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy
Now go back to the forum - reply and then right click in the reply box and paste

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)

If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.

However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.

I friend of mine purchased this Presario in 2004. She hasn't had internet since about 2006, so she hasn't had any of the updates since then. I brought her tower home with me since I have internet to load her updates. We're trying to get it internet ready. When I brought it home last week nothing would open. So yesterday she gave me the system recovery disc. I started with the Standard Recovery, but there were too many files that it couldn't recover. So I then decided to do a full recovery. After the full recovery it was rebooting and it told me that not all the system could reload and I couldn't hit okaybecause it wouldn't read / acknowledge my mouse. So, I unhooked her computer and rehooked mine to see what her alternatives were. I found a website, they wanted to know all the things it wouldn't oload. All I can remember is that it was things that could me downloaded later like: Norton, AOL, Adobe, MSN, and QuickTime.

So, I unhoked mine and rehooked her's up (and booted up my laptop). When her's came back up it's saying: NTLDR is missing Pres Control + Alt +Delete to Restart

My question for you is there anyway I can save her conputer? She doesn't have a lot of funds, being a singe mother of a 7 yr old and I'm just a good friend trying to help her out.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide

I have purchased a Compaq Presario 600 with an Athlon XP 2200+ processor. I do not have a copy of Windows XP to wipe it with. Is there any way with the installed XP that I can refresh this system and remove data frome previous owners? Or Can I load Win 98?

A:Compaq Presario 600 ??

Compaqs usually have a hidden partition with all the factory loaded software on it in an image format. As long as it does and you can figure out how to access it you could probable do that - but you almost likely need the XP Product key and may need to reactivate XP after the recovery. XP can only be install on one machine at a time - so if they are still using it you are out of luck.

Watch the boot up for any recovery messages or take a trip to www.Compaq.com and look up the info for your make/model.

A friend has a Presario X1300. It has a small problem. The power button only works once in a while (perhaps 1 in 20 presses). I thought perhaps it was a cold solder joint but even after touching up the button's pads its still has the problem.

It could be a bad switch, it looked like the switch had previously been replaced (although he hasn't had it serviced except to put in a new hard drive about a month before the switch went bad).

I found a post that indicated that someone found schematics for the motherboard and I was hoping that someone here would be able to point me in the right direction. I didn't find them on google. I'm going to replace the switch first, but if that doesn't work I have to assume there's some other problem that will need debugged.

I hate to see such a nice laptop go to waste because of a stupid power on problem.

I have found the service manual online. Its great, but has no schematics.

Thanks for any ideas you can offer.

Can't be done. It is probably some proprietary motherboard if it's a Pentium. If the motherboard is ATX you might....I said might be able to upgrade to a newer ATX motherboard. You will also need a new Power Supply, processor, memory and possible new graphics adapter.

I have an Compaq Presario 5724 that I FDisked and reloaded Win98 SE on. There are some components that are not working and I need drivers for. I have been to the Compaq site, but they have 2 or 3 different drivers for all the interfaces.
How can I find out which video, sound, modem are in the thing? Or, do I have to download all of the listed drivers and try them one at a time?
Thanks,
Dave

Hi, i'm having a problem turning on my laptop. I'm using a Compaq Presario C502US. I've been using the AC adapter that came with the laptop but eventually the AC adapter became loose and broke. The charging icon (lightning symbol) wouldn't turn on anymore and I think the laptop has now run out of power. I've finally received a new adapter and when i plug it in the charging icon lights up. However the laptop still won't turn on. I've waited for about 2 hours but it still won't turn on. When i click the power button, the Power turns on and then it blinks. The Fan turns on for about 3 seconds but then it goes off and the power light blinks and the monitor won't turn on. Can anyone help me with this problem?

A:Compaq Presario won't turn on

Remove battery and power adaptor (ie all power out)

Hold down the ON button (to disperse all internal power)
Plug the power adaptor back in only (and to wall socket!)
Turn on!

If it works, turn back off, and re-install battery, turn On

Backlight is out no doubt, screen look fine with flash light held up to it? Not much you can do for that, doubtful you can replace that unless you are pretty seriously technical.

Hey everyone I am having the same problem again as I was having before with my Compaq Presario 5000. It seems to just freeze up when I am on it or not. Sometimes I try to move the mouse to get back into Windows from the screen saver and it does nothing. At all! And sometimes in the middle of surfing the web and listening to music it just freezes up again and I have to hit the power button just to get it back up and running. Can anyone help out with this? I was asked to run MemTest before but I have no idea how to do this, so could someone help out? Also, since I am not a complete newbie, but darn close when it comes to the whole hardware side of computing, how can I tell what is causing interference with what when it comes to the hardware I am running and wether or not the latest drivers are installed? Thanks again and hope to get this resolved quickly.

I have a compaq presario 7470 in my possession. It used to work, but not for some reason it refuses to. I just bought a power supply for it and it still doesnt work. I figured out that if u remove the J3 pin from pins 2 and 3 after pressing the power button it will turn on. The compaq screen comes up and it says '102-System Board Failure.' This seems bad...what should i do? is it a fried motherboard? if the board was fried would it even turn on?? Thanks!

A:Compaq Presario 7470

I don't think the motherboard is fried in which case it wouldn't boot, as you say. But it definitly is having some problems...

Has Compaq support service gotten back with you yet ?

I need to completely reformat my compaq presario but have no idea how to format it since it is using vista. help help me do it step by step. thank you.

A:Compaq Presario Vista

1. turn on computer and tap on F11 repeatedly until the Compaq screen disappears
2. click Advanced Options
3. select system recovery (may say restore the computer to factory settings)
and click recover without backing up files, click next

It will do the rest on its own.

Do this with ONLY mouse, keyboard, monitor and power attached. If you added any parts inside other than ram you will need to remove them to ensure it works properly.

Thats all!

I was not sure just where this question should go so if this is not the right place please feel free to relocate it.

I have THIS desk-top:

Hewlett-Packard Compaq Presario CQ2723wPC
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
AMD EI-1200 Accelerated Processor
Memory = 4GB/G(something I can't make out) DDR
HardDrive = 500GB/
I am running a PPS PE9 photo effects program that is only working about 50%

I have found the minimum requirements for running this particular program:

Open GL 2.0 capable video card with 256MB dedicated RAM
Memory 8GB+

How do I find out what kind/size of video card, how much dedicated RAM, and available memory my unit has ?

If my unit is falling short in any of these requirements, is this something I can buy and is it within my abilities to make the necessary improvements ?

I am quite mechanically/electrically adept but I know little about the insides of a computer.

Thanks for reading.

A:Compaq Presario Particulars ???

The Compaq Presario CQ2723w Desktop PC(H2L89AA) comes with Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit and comes with this hardware:
Pegatron APXD1-DM(Redwood A) motherboard
AMD E1-1200 APU 1.40 GHz dual core processor which has an average benchmark score of 682
4 GB of DDR3-1333 RAM
Intel Radeon HD 7310 graphics which has an average benchmark score of 171
Realtek ALC662 high definition audio
Atheros AR8152 10/100 Mbps ethernet
500 GB SATA hard drive
Super-multi DVD burner disc drive
65 watt power supply

If you wanted a desktop that's speedy and has plenty of hardware upgrade options, you couldn't have picked one much worse than this one.
Its motherboard has no expansion slot for adding a graphics card, so you're stick with its wimpy integrated graphics which uses up to 1961 MB of shared memory.
Its slow wimpy processor is soldered to the motherboard and not upgradeable to a faster one.
It has only 4 GB of RAM, but it supports 8 GB, so you do have the option of adding more.

My compaq was working fine until one day it just went off during a user session. Pushing the power button made it try to start but when it began to load windows 98 it quit again. After serveral retries it finally started up again. It ran OK for about one week , then just went off again. This was during a user session.(user session meaning it was in use at the time). I tried to restart it but it would not restart. Finally it tried to start, then said press F2, then the video went out. Nosthing shows up on the screen now. When powered on you can hear the hard drive start up but that's about it. The three year warantee lapsed about a year ago . I was wondering whether or not this has something to do with the cmos battery. Apparently several people I know who purchased a Compaq laptop have run into the same problem. I have a friend who owns an IBM thinkpad which has done precisely the same thing. Any suggestions.
Sincerely
Frank

A:Compaq presario 1200XL111

It is possible for the cmos battery to cause similiar problems, but from what you are saying it looks like a processor problem. For the system to just shut off in the middle of being used and unable to start up again, shows the possibility that the processor has overheated and the machine has powered off, however because the machine is still too hot it wouldnt fully start up again.
To say that your video has then gone, could mean the processor is completely knackered, signs of life can still be seen from the machine but nothing will appear on the screen, in most cases the monitor will stay on standby even when the machine is powered on.

I suggest a new processor, with new heatsinc and fan.

I bought this compaq presario 1800T from a garage sale and when I first turned it on it took at least 30min. for it to completely boot up and run fine. Cna some tell what to do for it to run faster. Also it has no memory chip and it runs on xp and was designed for ME or 2000.
Im also trying to get internet on it.
Please Help!

A:Need Help with compaq presario 1800T

how can it run with no memory? You will at least 1 gb of ram to run XP well. 512mb at the minimum to be acceptable.
Read the upgrading/troubleshooting ram guide in the guides forum before installing ram.

read the speeding up computers/system guide in the guides forum to see how to speed up your system. It is old, so bear in mind it really is only good for office work.

It has a built in telephone modem port and a LAN port for internet.
If you want to go WIFI (wireless) you need to buy a WIFI card for it.

I have a problem with my laptop screen. The screen is dark, however, the data is still there. Can't turn lamp on, or change anything, but can hook up to a monitor and it works. Can I fix the screen to work again? If I hit the button that turns the screen off and closes the computer down, the picture pops up for a few seconds and it is slightly red.

Its most likely that the backlight has failed. It can be fixes but it costs a upwards of $100 to do by a professional. You could try buying the parts online and doing it yourself though if you are technically inclined.

Hello. A buddy of mine has an old Compaq Presario 7470 that he is putting a new mobo in. Apparently, the old case has color-coded front panel wires. He has separated the wires and now he does not know which ones go where (in terms of going to reset button, power button, Etc). We have looked everywhere on the net for some sort of schematic for the Compaq case to figure out the color-coded wires. However, not even Compaq site has any info. Also, to note, the wires apparently terminate on some sort of small printed board before going to the lights and buttons. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate your help.

Thank you,
LS

A:Compaq Presario 7470

The front panel wireing is one problem with trying to put a non Compaq board in a Compaq case . . the power supply may be another . . a lot of the OEM's use a proprietary Power supply with non standard connectors.

You might be able to Google Compaq Front Panel connectors to see if someone has worked it out ( i know of one guy who did for Dell )

He will almost certainly be better off buying a new case for the new board, and using whatever hardware he can with the new system.

Hello,

I have a Compaq Presario 1247 Notebook (laptop) with Windows 98 Second Edition with a 4.3 Gigabyte hard drive that was logically partitioned into 2 drives (C: and D: ). Earlier this year I used my CD Burner to copy all of the Quick Restore files from the D: Drive to a blank CD-ROM (CD-RW) disk and then removed the partition from the hard drive with a program from the Compaq Website. My CD-Burner is connected to my Notebook via a PCMCIA USB 2.0 Card, it has 2 USB Ports on it, one port is being used by my CD-Burner the other port is not being used.

Last Friday (09-24-2004) my Notebook caught a virus while I was on the internet and it was corrupted. MS Windows Explorer error message came up when I tried to look at my hard drive. The error message also came up when I rebooted, therefore no desktop icons appeared. So I reformatted the hard drive C: and put the Quick Recovery CD-ROM Disk in the internal CD-ROM drive. However, the Quick Recovery Disk displayed a message that it could not find the Quick Restore files and to contact Compaq Customer Support. I reformatted my hard drive again this time with the /quick format switch and /make system disk switch and then copied all the files and subdirectories from the Quick Recovery CD to my hard drive. Now before I even tried to run FDISK to repartition my hard drive into 2 logical drives I thought I would put the CD (CD-RW) containing all of the Quick Restore files and subdirectories that I burned earlier this year (before I r... I'm trying to reformat my mom's old Compaq Presario SR1303WM. I've set it to boot from the cd-rom and I almost had it. But after deleting the partitions and starting a clean install it would only load the programs to 20%. After that it locked up and wouldn't do anything. I had to shut down and restart.

Now, it won't load from anything. Of course the old OS is gone so it won't start up on the hard drive and it won't boot from the cd. It just keeps going to a black screen with "Error Loading Operating System". Can someone please help me. I know they can't get a new computer and I just want to get a new install on this one to speed it up for them. They had a ton of malware and such on it.

Any help greatly appreciated.

A:Compaq Presario won't reformat

Since HP now owns Compaq, I am not sure what kind of cds you have in order to attempt recovery.
Per HP Support

HP computers that ship with Microsoft Windows XP do not come with recovery CDs. Instead, they use a hidden space (partition) on the hard drive to store the recovery information. The use of a separate partition provides a convenient process that eliminates the use of recovery discs that may be lost or scratched. A system recovery from the hard drive may not be possible in some circumstances. Your computer may contain Recovery Disc Creation software. Recovery discs for Windows XP are available from HP for a minimal cost. See Obtaining Recovery Discs for ordering information.Click to expand...

What kind of disk are you using to attempt restore, and are you using HP's support page?
Are you still set to boot from CD and to attempt to do so FIRST?
Is your BIOS properly identifying your hard drive?
What happens if you unplug the data cable from the hd before trying to boot to cd?
Do you have the "Recovery Console" option at some point during boot?

Okay. At work I have 2 Compaq Presario PC's. One is model SR1010NX and the other is S5010NX. They're fairly old. I have a Ubuntu 10.04 server set up that acts as my DHCP/TFTP/Samba server for booting with PXE, then installing the selected system and my custom application suite using only literally 2 minutes of my time to type in such details as the CD Key, Computer Name, etc.

So anyway, back to my Presario problems. Both computer conveniently do not have a Network Boot ROM (for example nVidia Boot Agent). So if I try to boot from network, Ill get a "Disc Failure". The S5010NX will not boot with a USB drive plugged-in period. It will get stuck on the red "Compaq" screen. If I unplug the device, it boots into BIOS/OS perfectly fine. If Im in the BIOS, and I plug the device in, the BIOS turns non-responsive, when I remove it, it starts responding again. Weird.

Here the 2nd chat session I've had with HP Professional Support (or whatever it's called). All I have to say is, I knew more about computers when I was 12 then these guys do.

I have a Compaq Presario C74EM which I just installed Win 8 RP. The sound did not work.

Eventually I was able to find and install drivers - sound still didn't work, but after following the advice on a forum post, I put the computer to sleep, waited a few minutes, woke it up, and sound now works.

This computer came with Win Vista home. Supposedly the Compaq Win7 drivers will work with Win8. Compaq (hp) has utilities that will go through any/all drivers, and update to the latest.

Does anyone know how to get this going under Win 8?

Hello bilmac1. Probably, when Windows was installed, it failed to recongize the BIOS as ACPI compatible. Or simply, APM is not enabled: check under "Power Options Properties" if the tab "APM" exists; if so, check the option "Enable Advanced Power Management Support" (if it's checked, uncheck it, weird as it sounds).

I am upgrading a Compaq Presario 5000 model #5WB220 with a very low 15 GB hard drive for a friend. It currently has Windows ME and there is no Compaq Restore CD.

I have increased the memory to 320 by adding an additional 256 MB RAM.

I am wanting to totally replace the 15GB hard drive with an 80 GB hard drive and load Windows XP Home.

The problem I am finding out is that Compaq has propriertory info on a partition within the existing drive. From what I understand without the Restore CD, I can't put the new drive in.

I'm wondering if there are any other alternatives to doing this.

Can I install XP on the existing drive and then transfer all the data (to include the compaq proprietory info) to the new drive in a slave position?

To use it: When you first start the computer there will be a black screen with probably three different choices of keys to press. One of them will be something like system restore or restore. the DVD drive stopped working and now the hard drive has errors.

I got an external USB DVD drive on it, but chkdsk cannot seem to repair the hard drive.

Anyone got any idea how to fix it or recover data off of the hard drive. I got a year's worth of work on it, and none of my files show up. Just "File record segment XXXXX is unreadable" errors about a million of them.

A:Compaq Presario 2500

Suggest you stop using the drive until you can recover the data.
It is likely that drive has failed or is going into total failure.
You can purchase a replacement drive for $42 to $75 depending on size and whether you get the 5400 rpm or the 7200 rpm in a 40, 60, or 80 GB model.
You can obtain an adapter to put the drive into a desktop unit as a slave. The adapter converts the mobile 2.5" hard drive by adapting the pin set for the desktop EIDE cable. Adapters are available many places, including www.geeks.com, www.cyberguys.com, www.frys.com, www.outpost.com, and others... cheaply at $2.45 to $9.99 depending on where you get one.
Then you can usually drag and drop the data from the mobile drive to a desktop drive, or use drive recovery software, then you can burn a CD to then migrate it to your new drive... or just use a USB transfer.
( We work on a great number of the Presario 2500's with identical problems. Did you know there are 434 different models of the Presario 2500 series of laptops?)
With the new drive, you just use the recovery set that came with your laptop, or buy the set for about $30, including shipping, from the Compaq parts department.
But you likely will not ever be able to use that drive again. Thus, you do not want to stress it further by more restart or rescue attempts.
