Solved: LCD monitor has faded to black

Q: Solved: LCD monitor has faded to black

hello. having problems with LCD montior. It is a quality monitor--NEC Multisync LCD 1830--but is about 5 years old.

For a week or so it was flickingering slightly. Then one day it faded to black for a minute, came back for 30 seconds, then went black for a long time. On subsequent days I tried it, no luck. Then one day I tried it again and it worked for a few minutes before fading to black again. When it works for brief periods, the image quality is perfect. But at any time it is liable to go totally black again.

Might it be at the end of its lifespan? Can anyone tell me the normal lifespan for LCD's?

Are they worth repairing, in general?

Note: i am quite sure the problem is with the monitor, not the CPU or anything else. i hooked up another monitor and it has been working perfectly for days.

A: Solved: LCD monitor has faded to black

Your LCD is history as in either or backlight, inverter and no it is not worth having fixed. Buy a new one.

The bottom corner of my mitsubishi diamond pro 1000 21 inch montitor sometimes fades and this morning was highly redified. so I pressed the degauss button, and that fixed things up decently thought it is still a little faded. Strangely if I move the monitor around a bit it seems to get better, depending on how it faces, but the way I want it to face makes the bottom corner not so good. Is there something I can do, some maintenance technique that will improve this situation? Thanks in advance.

Google has a new video chat (webcam) plugin. I've been using my Logitech Fusion webcam with Windows Live Messenger, no problems. I downloaded the plugin and used the test window to check it. I appear as just a black screen, even though the plugin knows I have Logitech Fusion, it appears in the box under "camera". I am able to use the audio portion of the plugin, using my Logitech webcam, I can speak and hear perfectly. There's no picture. I tried Google's page on the new plugin, no trouble-shooting link. I tried phoning Logitech, the guy said he never heard of the plugin and has no idea if it will work, though the camera does work with Yahoo and AIM messengers. Sooo, have come to my one trusted source, when nobody knows, tech guys know! Please clue me in!!

My BenQ T905 monitor (cabled as an auxiliary monitor to my Mac PowerBook G4 laptop) worked fine for about a year (purchased Nov. 05). Then several months ago, I noticed it was flashing a few times when booting up. Nothing else was problematic, so I assumed it was a minor glitch.

Today, with my Macintosh Powerbook powered up for several hours, suddenly my BenQ monitor dimmed and the light started sort of draining down and away. The whole thing went black and, as it did, I heard a small pop come from somewhere in back of it.

I turned it off, then back on. When I do, I see the "BenQ" logo for a split second before it goes to solid black again. Is my monitor fried? Or is there something I can try to coax it back to life?

A:BenQ T905 faded to black

Is it still under any kind of warranty? I doubt it, but you gotta ask.

Can you see anything if you shine a flashlight at the screen and look very close?
If the backlight burned out the screen will still work, but it will be almost impossible to see.

Fujitsu CRT monitor has a suddenly "faded" display, as if the screen has been whitewashed. It's also slightly out of focus, and there's a tiny black dot in the middle. It's still usable (using it now to post this). Tried degaussing a couple of times, no result, though at one point it displayed properly for an instant during one degaussing. Any help appreciated.

Monitor: eMachines e15t4

So my issue is like the image I posted above - I have faded blackish lines moving all over the screen (kind of a fuzziness). It will gradually change as I change the monitor refresh rate, however it's always there. I have noticed, I can only see it in windows; if I'm in bios, It's not active. I can not try another monitor because I have no other monitor.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey -- I'm having the same problem as NOYB had with photoshop. It doesn't look like the problem was resolved in that thread.

I recently re-installed photoshop/video card drivers/ did a re-format.

Opened a file in MS paint and windows picture viewer and the colors are beautiful, perfect.

But -- when I open the file in Photoshop and an Arcsoft photo program, (under my monitor workspace profile) the blacks are saturated in the green range. This is a problem with every single photo I open now. If I try RGB, everything is faded.

I tried all of the color workspace settings, RGB, monitor, etc, applied almost all of the profiles in preview, and nothing looks right. My monitor is calibrated - the photo here was edited to my preference in photoshop before and now it's all wrong. This is driving me crazy.

Tried: two different graphics cards, calibrating monitor, updating drivers, changing color profile settings....

I have a maxtech(i know) 19' lcd that has a white ghostlike area around the edge of the screen that goes away after it is on for about 30m-1hr. The monitor is over 3 yrs old. Anyone know why it does this? Is it going bad?

A:White 'faded area' around edge of lcd monitor

Offhand? Given the age; I would first think that the fluorescent tube light used to backlight the screen is beginning to go bad. It starts off a little to dim with the edges worst, just like a fluorescent tube in a ceiling light. Once warmed up it reaches full brightness .
This is fixable, the bulbs are designed to be replaced .

But if it is something more complex like the internal electronics the monitor may be on the way to the junk pile.

Hello. This is my first post on these forums.

Getting to the point, I have a Panasonic TV which I have been using as a Secondary Monitor for the past few months, and it has worked perfectly (with an S-video cable). One day I was using it for general reasons and the screen faded to black, and I knew it was on standby. Problem is, I tried everything, but it seemed to stay on standby no matter what. I have tried reconnecting the S-video cable to many places both on PC and Monitor, still same result.

I am using AV3 on the monitor, and am using the Operating System Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit.

UltraMon doesn't seem to be helping in any way with it, and yes, the monitor is enabled in Display Settings.

I honestly have no idea at all why it just went black one day, other things such as my Xbox and normal TV viewing works perfectly on my Panasonic TV.

A:Secondary Monitor faded and won't work again (Panasonic)

Oh great. It still doesn't work.

Hey Panasonic, make a monitor which can be taken out of standby.

hi ,
i have 2 identical hp w2007 flat screen monitors. they are both installed on
identical gateway 3 yr old PC's with xp. one monitor is upstairs, and mine is downstairs. mine works perfectly .. they one upstairs.. lets call it monitor 1,
has developed a bright or washed out , bright horizontal line about 4" tall-going across the entire screen.
... along with this problem it doesn't have true black ,(more of a black brown faded) on all black screens...
Mine , monitor 2, is perfect.
monitor 1, started having issues ,with not holding, a preferred setting.. it wouldn't hold resolution, size or brightness , contrast and other settings.. i have uninstalled the new monitor and software and reinstalled it.. i have tried all the monitor adjustments , i have tried to match resolutions and setting to my perfect monitor 2..nothing works.. from day one , it only had one oddity... there was a white shadow
around the arrow pointer, cursor, my monitor never had that.. i couldn't even make my pointer/cursor , do that..
does anyone think it has a burned out
band " across the monitor? what are these new crystal clear view flat screens like inside? Anyone think there is anything i can do..
could it be a bad video card.. or just a blown new monitor?
thanks for all the help.. i can sure use it..

When I boot to hiren's my monitor goes black after about 2 minutes saying that it is not receiving a signal.
The monitor is the only problem, up until the monitor shuts off everything works normally, and probably works normally after too, I can be moving the mouse constantly but the monitor still turns off.
There are no problems when I'm using it normally, only when i boot to hiren's. there doesn't seem to be a problem when i boot to a 2k install disk.

I encountered this while resizing and formatting a partition, but it doesn't have to do with that it still went blank when i let it sit on the hirens menu.

I am not very "IT" knowledgeable so hope someone can help me.
I start up my PC (Dell) and see the Dell symbol. It thens goes to the Windows XP symbol. After that the screen goes blank and stays like that (can't even see the cursor).

I called a buddy who tried to get me into Safe Mode (pressing F8 when Windows XP was loading; couldn't get into safe mode).

Can someone either 1) let me know how to get into Windows XP safe mode and/or 2) inform me how to fix this problem.

This seems to be a software issue as the hardware starts ok.

A:Solved: LCD Monitor goes black at Startup

Are you tapping F8 beginning as soon as the computer begins to boot, not after you see any XP logo?

Most likely you are going to have to reinstall to fix this. What recovery media came with the system?

You might also want to check for any diagnostic leds on the rear of the computer.

This is the first time I have posted on this site.

I can't give all the specs, because the monitor is black and I can't get into my PC.

I havea Gateway PC with Windows XP and have a new AT&T modem that is DSL/wireless. I also have a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse.

I have had the modem for a month and just hooked up a laptop to the wireless. At the same time my son was using the wireless to update his playstation 3.

Both did fine.... the playstation updated and I was able to use the laptop.

My PC was on the whole time. Later I noticed my PC screeen was black (it looked asleep) moved the mouse around and it wont wake up. I also noticed that the normal green lights to show the wireless connection were not lit up. I also shut down the laptop thinking it had something to do with it.

Control+alt+delete wont even bring the monitor up, so I held the power button in to shut the PC down.

Left PC off all night, pushed the on button this morning and still no monitor the power button stays amber, the wireless keyboard and mouse lights are off and the tower lights come on for a bit then they go off too. I can hear the fan running in the tower, but it dosent sound like it did before.

Is the wireless part of the modem preventing my PC from starting up or just a freak thing and the PC was on the way out and I need a new PC, did I blow a capacitor???? Did the power cord go bad???

If I take my PC in to the doctor..can I still use the laptop while PC is getting fixe... Read more

This is how the incident occurred.

A roommate used a towel to clean the back of the monitor, but he mistakenly loosed the power cable a bit (on the monitor), and so the monitor went off. Once replugged, the monitor acted weird.

Every time you switch on the monitor the screen is lit for several seconds. Then the screen will turn black (the power button is indicated on). You switch the button off and then on. The screen will show for several seconds and turn black again.

I tried to remove all cables and put them back. It doesn't work.
I tested the monitor in two computers with the same (miserable) result.
I used different cables too. Tried both D-SUB and DVI. No luck.

It's hard to believe the monitor went out of order after such clean-up. How could this happen?

Any pointer to the problem?

Hi
i'm new here, so i don't know exactly if it's the right fourm or title
anyway, from time to time, when i turn on my desktop machine, it lights up an everything, and there is no weird sounds or anything, but the screen stays black, it doesn't show the motherboard logo, nor the windows logo and stays like that.
i can temporarily fix it by unplugging the monitor and plugging it in again and then restarting, and then the computer starts up normally and stays like that all the time it's turned on.
this problem doesn't happen every time, but it's pretty common, it happens around twice every three times.
i'm suspecting the cable, i just want to be sure since i'm unable to get a new cable in the mean time.

oh, and sorry if this question was answered, i just didn't know how to look for it or what keywords to use.

thanks for you help !!!

Hello,

A few days back, my computer became infected with a virus, and after finally being able to remove it, I find that the folder "My Documents" is faded out (which means that it is partially transparent) as well as the "Shared Documents." Moreover, all of my files in "My Documents" are simply gone, but when I go to "Recent History" (say, in Microsoft Word), the files are still there and alive and well. So what's going on here and what can be done about this?

Hi there, I have been using these forums as aid to me for a while now and they are so incredibly helpful at crunch time. I want to thank all who help out here.
My problem, The monitor goes black every few hours. The light on the monitor goes amber color so that leads me to believe that it's the graphics card that stops responding. I also don't rule out that one of my HDD's are going bad as well. Maybe even the CPU. However, the Pc still runs and all because I can hear the fans.

It has been doing this off and on for the past year now. It would come and go so I didn't get to worked up about it. Now it's happening a few times a day. There is no pattern to it b/c I leave it running over night or when i'm playing games it does not matter, it still goes out.

I dusted my pc to see if that helped, maybe it was overheating, no help tho. Sometimes(maybe 15-20% of the time) it would even reboot itself after the monitor goes black. Can someone help?

A:Solved: Monitor goes black at random, hdd? graphics?

Well you can rule out the hard drive. But that leaves the monitor, video card, power supply, RAM, motherboard, and overheating.

Check all the fans; there should be one in the power supply, one on the video card, and one on the CPU. There may also be a few more. Make sure all are spinning at a good rate.

You can also use something like Speedfan in Windows to monitor the temps and voltages of the system: http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
Post the temps and voltages.

Also, I believe your Radeon 9700 requires a seperate power connector from the power supply. Check to see if your card has the 4 pin power connector and if so that theres a power connector plugged in.

Another thing you can do is pull out and reseat all the cards and cables to make sure there's good contact.

I would also suggest you test the memory: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Hi.

My monitor screen keeps fading black..
I would like to ask what could be causing the problem.

here is some more info:

-Computer screen just gets black and monitor states: ''no signal". It can happen anytime. Usually it can keep running for days without any problem, and then suddenly it fades black 3x per day. I noticed the longer I keep my computer turned off, smaller the chance it will fade any soon, but then, I need to use it..
-Im sure it isnt monitor (tried it on other pc)
-Im sure its not cable to monitor (tried another one)
-all "external" cables are connected properly, tried many times.
- I believe i tried updating my graphic card to latest date when it started happening without any difference

Internal cables might not be connected to perfection, but it started happening by itself, i didnt move with PC at that time, it shouldnt be an issue, still I ll try opening it and reconnect everything I find there.
Whats your ideas about it. Hardware or software issue? And what should I do.

Thanks for every bit of help!

Btw: it started happening when I was using extension cable to my monitor, but Im no longer using it and problem still occurs.

Hello,
My problem is that my monitor (Samsung SyncMaster205BW) 20in. diagonal, was displaying a horizontal stretched view. A day or so ago I changed my OS from Windows Vista to Windows XP. When running Visa the picture was very good indeed, and in proportion. Since using XP the display isn't correct with a stretched horizontal view and large print, fuzzy appearance etc. etc.. I looked in the Display/Settings/Advanced/Monitor...which gave 'Default monitor'as a label, (should this not have labelled it Samsung etc....?)and with Properties grayed out. The Adaptor tab brought up the Adaptor and the Tab List all modes, with one of these selected. I was looking at the Properties of this Adaptor, then Device usage at the bottom, with the selection of 'Use... or do not use...' and unfortunately I might have left it on the Do Not Use, closed the windows, shutdown and went to lunch, .... and now I have now operating screen. How can I get this back?
At the time I was looking for the correct driver for using XP because I guess the operating driver at that time was for Vista
I would be very grateful for any help.

Hi!

Two months ago (approx.) my Gateway monitor died. (Not to go off on a rant, but it wasn't even 3yo.) So I bought an Acer H233H. Right off the bat, the colors were bothering me. They are muted. Where something should be bright red, it's a soft red. Where it should be turquoise, it's light turquoise. Everything has this like filter over it. Nothing is bright. Nothing is sharp. (Color wise)

Within the past two weeks the black now shows a greenish tint, halfway from the screen and down. Anything that is black at the top will be greenish if I move it into the 'green' area. I.E. If I am watching a video and move it to the bottom right while I work in another screen, anything black in that movie is affected by the green tint (makes watching Supernatural hard, lol).

I've been going back and forth with Acer. I've tried their troubleshooting suggestions. I've reset the monitor. Nothing. I've messed with the colors and calibration and anything and everything I can think of. Nothing works/changes it.

Is there anything I can do or that I am missing? My previous monitor was a Gateway FPD something or other (it was 22"). When it started to go, I read that its a known soldering issue inside, but Gateway wasn't recalling it, etc. But the colors were vibrant. Is it just a different monitor or should my monitor be vibrant too?

Thanks for any help!

Erin

I've posted about this issue before on several forums and as of yet there is no solution but I'm going to keep trying. What happens is when I play some games for an indeterminate amount of time the monitor will go black, the case fans will spin up, and I will be unable to do anything until I turn the computer off. Sometimes the audio glitches into a repetitive pattern and sometimes it will continue playing whatever music was on so I know it's not the processor. I'm also fairly sure it isn't a heat problem because I WAS having a heat problem a month or two ago and thanks to this site that was solved (dust all over the place) and I have some software to monitor temp.

The reason I say the time is indeterminate is because some games will go for five or six hours without crashing and at least one (Black and White 2) will crash after 30 minutes regularly. They all crash the same way so I don't know what the difference between them are. I have a pretty high end system and run newer games fine, it makes no sense that Black & White 2 would be using up more resources or causing my GPU to overheat.

I have a Proview 16"monitor and hooked up to an SIS motherboard, the monitor shows black bands around the outer edges of the screen images. I cannot find any model number on the front of the monitor. Getting to the back is next to impossible at the moment. I have tried various screen resolutions with no success. Can someone give me some advice on how to get rid of the black bands? Thank you in advance for your reply.

I had to switch monitors and video cards both when the old monitor broke, which was working perfectly, it was 1650 by 1080 max resolution. This new monitor is 1080p, wide screen. 1920 by 1080.

The old AMD card was x1650, the new video card is Gt610.

This new Westnghouse Tv - monitor combo, an LD2240 has terrible text colors. Instead of all black it just randomly throws up colored text. If I zoom the screen the text reverts to all black, If I zoom out the screen, the text goes to a mix of black, red, blue letters. If I do a full zoom out, black text looks like a lit up Christmas tree of colors.

I am using an HDMI cable and Nvidia 368 driver.

Here is a picture taken with a cell phone. If I shared a screen shot, you will see normal colors.

Will getting an DVI to HDMI adapter help? The monitor TV only has VGA and HDMI, no DVI input.

If I change from 1080p to 1080i, the text color issue is solved, but the text is not as sharp.

A:LED monitor displays black text as mix of red, black, blue

You're sure that the monitor supports 1080p not 1080i? I ask because some TV's only support up to 1080i.

Based on what you've said and are showing us, I think this might be the case. Judging from that picture, that TV does not like 1080p.

Edit:

Although I just checked the model out online and the literature all says 1080p. Is there a setting on the TV that allows you to switch between 1080i and 1080p? Or does it do it automatically?

Edit again:

I just went through the instruction book, and nowhere does it say 1080p. Something you could try is going into the PC settings and adjusting the clock and the phase controls. It may help, or it may only apply to the TV's VGA connector, I don't know.

Hi, I have windows home 7, home built pc with Asus motherboard. Don't ask me further spec details cuz I have no idea about most of the specs (an ex built it and can't get in control panel due to monitor issue). I just know that it's supposed to be kick-*** with a 5.8 windows score.

The PC boots fine, gives you the option to start windows normally or leave it do its' thing... but either way I try, it makes no difference to monitor.
When it boots, the monitor shows all the usual details, the bios pic, starting... and as soon as it reaches desktop point (I think), it goes black even though monitor is still powered and no errors about no signal. If I turn monitor off and on, it will quickly show me the desktop then it goes black again.

I'd appreciate any help or insight.

Hi, first thing I would try is to connect the PC to another monitor that is known to be in good working order. If the same problem occurs then we will know it is a problem with the PC, if it functions normally you will know it is a problem with your monitor.

I have a dual monitor set up through HDMI. My laptop works just fine but the second monitor went black during a gaming session and hasn't worked since. I have restarted, verified its on HDMI setting, updated drivers, checked refresh rates.

The Second monitor is still connected. I can move things there (cant see it) because it is black. When I right click and click screen resolution I can see the screen pop up.

I think the color scheme may have changed during the gaming session and that might be the culprit. It was an old game - 2009

I need some help. I have acomputer monitor that is roughly 10 years old. THe monitor last night decided to suddenly turn off and the power button started blinking. I unplugged the power to the monitor and let it sit overnight. This morning I went and plugged the power back into the monitor and pressed the power button on it. When I pressed the power button the button started blinking again. I have never had a monitor die like this and I would like to know why it died and if it can be fixed. Some more info is that i had only been on the computer for less than 2 hours. I have not spilled anything on the computer, the vent is completely uncovered, and the computer is in good working conditions according to the mannual. I need to know asap please. The tower still works perfectly fine it is only the monitor.

A:Monitor is black and the power button on the monitor is blinking

If you could try the monitor on another PC, that would confirm the monitor is faulty. In any case if the monitor is bad and considering its age, it would be best to just replace it. It would not be worth fixing.

I have been running a dual monitor setup for several years without issue. I was using a 28" Hanns G 16:10 1920x1200 via HDMI & an ASUS 27" via DVI. They were connected to a Zotac GTX 570 and then later to a Gigabyte GTX 770 4GB graphics card.

About a month ago I substituted a 30 Inch Monoprice 16:10 2560x 1600 monitor connected via DVI for the Asus monitor (both MP & HG still connected to GTX 770). In the last two days, the Monoprice monitor has gone black twice. When this happens, all programs that were visible on the now black monitor combine with the programs on the visible monitor. When I open up the control panel, it only lists the Hanns G (still visible) monitor as detected and the Monoprice (black) monitor has to be re-detected. After clicking on "Detect" the monitor returns to normal. This happened once while gaming (Left 4 Dead 2) and once when I wasn't gaming...can't remember exactly what programs were open at that time.

I updated my graphics driver between the time it first happened and the second time it happened. I also used device manager to see if there was an available monitor driver update available, but windows claims that the most current driver is installed and that the graphics card and both monitors are working properly.

I would really appreciate any assistance that can be offered. The 30 inch monitor wasn't cheap and I am hoping that the monitor is not the issue. I have not yet done any trial and error measures such as ... Read more

Hi all.

So, I just got a spiffy new monitor from Woot.com (a debranded HP w2338h). Gorgeous, works great when it's all by its lonesome. Not even a dead pixel!

However, when I try to hook it up at the same time as my old HP vs17 (which also works great by itself), it goes black, says "no input signal," and goes to sleep. I'm using a Radeon 4670 HD. Brand new drivers, Hydravision installed. Windows 7 64-bit.

Catalyst detects both the monitors, offering an extended desktop, and when I move my mouse off the side of the vs17, it disappears and takes time to return, indicating that the computer thinks the screen is still on and is moving the mouse all over this expanse of screen real estate.

Also, when I boot up, both monitors show the boot-up screen just fine, up through the Windows logo load.

Tried switching the cables on the video card, no luck.

Any ideas?

Hi all,
i am here today because I am in need of serious help. I recently bought a new computer with a sceptre x22 lcd monitor. When i first started to use my computer my monitor would go black once in a while, in fact it didn't turn totally black since i could barely see the clear areas such as the taskbar etc. Now since then it started to happen frequently, and today i was playing a game online and it would happen every damn 15 seconds. Now take note that turning off and on the monitor normally temporarily puts my computer back on track. Right now I am plugged on my old lcd and everything is going right. For the lcd i tried vga and dvi, both didn't work. Now I think my video card is not totally inserted in the pci express (one side must be 1 or 2 mm out), because the case just won't permit it, the video card is too big or I don't know what. Now since I changed monitors and the problem is gone, i guess the problem is not the video card.
Please help! Thanks

My monitor started fading--not changing colors. It got so dark I could hardly read it. My husband replaced the video card. It's a PCI Radeon 9250 with 128MB. The monitor got better but got dark again. We hooked up our 1999 monitor and tried it. Both the old card and the new card was tried on both monitors and didn't get normal brightness. Currently, however, the original integrated motherboard card is working fine on this 1999 monitor. Can't figure out if there's a monitor or video card problem. In BIOS it looked as thought it recognized the PCI card. I didn't see anything that would let me turn off the older video card. I'm afraid to change monitors or do anything fearing I might get a black screen again. Thanks for your help.

Hello saxoman ,

this sounds like you may have an infection but i am leaning twords that you may need to do some updates

you may need to contack your administrator so that they can have an IT tech take a look at it

for if you can not modify it then there is not much we can do to help you for to update it you will have to install updates to programs / drivers / and may have to make adjustments to the software & your system to get it to work & connect , that is why some companies set there hardware up so that they will be in control and limet the control that the users have

how much control do you have ?? or are you highly limeted !!

hope this helps

Hello,

A colleague of mine has been having trouble with one of her monitors, she has a brand new computer (Windows 7) with a relatively new monitor (just a few months old).

So, while the computer is in use the monitor goes completely black. The computer still recognizes the monitor, it is still turned on and according to the input menu of the monitor it still recognizes the VGA input from the computer. From the 'Screen Resolution' panel I tried disconnecting the display and then reconnect it, the monitor comes alive after this for a short while. Disconnecting the VGA and reconnecting right away doesn't appear to have any effect.

Do you guys have any thoughts on what might be causing this ?

Test the monitor on a different computer and/or test a different monitor on that computer. That will determine which device is faulty, the monitor or the computer.

I am working on a Dell Latitude D610 laptop. The issue being the monitor would randomly go black during BIOS, it works fine with an external monitor, so I figured it was the inverter. I bought and replaced it, now it stays on longer but still goes black, unless I hold the button down that tells the laptop the screen is closed for a few seconds then release, after that it will either go black again, or stay on for indefinitely until a reboot then the problem repeats itself. Is this a monitor issue or a problem with the close button itself? Thanks for any help!

Hi,

I was working happily away in Photoshop this morning when I started having this problem, and it seems to be progressing throughout the day. All of the sudden my monitor went black, and then came back again. At first it was just doing it every once in a while now it seems to be doing it every time I try to do something. The green light on the monitor USUALLY stays green, but then every once in a while when the monitor flickers to black the monitor goes to stand by. It seems to not only be doing it whenever it feels like now but also when I click on the start button, when I change windows, and sometimes even when I hit 'enter'.

I'm a bit worried that it might be my graphics card. The thing is we just replaced the stinking graphics card maybe a year ago and we certainly didn't pay for a disposable one!

Oh, I almost forgot. One time when I restarted my computer it said something about overclocking failing, but it hasn't done it since then. I don't even know what overclocking is! It's not something I've told it to do anyways.

I'm wondering if my CPU is running a too hot too...I think it said something about being 78 degrees Celcius.

Ok that was nauseating...it just flickered on and off like ten times in a row. My window title bars seem to keep turning black now too.

I'm running Windows XP, this scan thing I did says I have an Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.40GHz, I've got 3 GIG of RAM, and an NVIDIA GeForce 6600 LE.

Right, you can still use print screen or whatever to take a pic of your setup and both monitors will show up. Windows still thinks you have 2 good monitors, but it sounds like the 2nd one is shot. Flickering is a tell tale sign it`s dieing, most likely.

Hello, once again I am asking your help because some strange bs thing happened that makes me go bananas and to be honest I've never seen stuff like this at no one. So the problems is the following:

I bought a new headphone yesterday ( my older one died ) I tested it at the store at the clerks PC to see if it sounds how I want it and it is balanced for what I need it for ( I'm a music producer ) it was all good and obviously I bought the headphones. My problem started after I got home and plugged my headphones in to my MAIN sound board ( the onboard card is disabled from bios ) and my monitor ( a Horizon ) just went blank.I plugged a bunch of headphones while the pc was on,the same thing did the clerk at the shop so I can test it out and nothing like this happened but now for some unknown reason my screen started flickering, going blank from 30 to 30 seconds and only after I powered off and on the monitor it started " working " for a few seconds and then again going off until I switched it on and off. Now here is another info, my monitor has build in speakers BUT the cable from it was plugged in the onboard sound card which was DISABLED and so were the speakers from the monitor ( I plugged it in so it won't hang loose a few years ago )
What could be the problem? What connection could there be between me plugging in the headphones and my LCD going nuts even though the other soundcard is on disable. My first answer was some kind of " shortage " but it doesn't ... Read more

Disabled or not metal touching metal is contacting each other. Maybe when you plugged it in it spiked through the back panel of the system (I/O shield) sounds crazy but could theoretically happen. What headphones, maybe they tried to pull to much power (High impedance?) causing the issue. Try re-plugging in the monitor cable and unplug the speakers from the disabled port.

Lately, one of my monitors (Optiquest Q241wb) has been having fits where it seems to decide that it doesn't feel like showing most of the screen. I recorded a (low-quality, sorry) video of this where moving a window into the upper-right quadrant, or maximizing it, produces the effect. What could be causing this? Something easier to fix, or replace?

Hello.

My problem is that after a while (time varies) of use on the computer my second monitor has started blinking and then going black. I have a ati 6950 graphics card with 2 slots for monitors.

Now the weird thing is you would think that it is either
A) a problem with the monitor itself
B) the second output on the card is going bad

well when i try hooking up my monitor that works to the slot that does not work nothing shows up, its like the monitor is in sleep mode

But when i hook the monitor that goes blank to the slot that always works for the other monitor, it also does not work.

having both of those things happen, it leads me to think its possibly drivers? so as im typing right now im downloading new graphics drivers, (i was only 1 version behind, but who knows ati's drivers tend to corrupt from time to time.)

any help or things i should try would be awesome. thanks in advance

A:Second monitor goes black

Try the monitor swap test from a cold power off of the complete system.

Last nite i was using my computer to surf the internet and listen to music. Im almost positive I dont have any viruses, im a CS major, i would like to give myself some credit. BUt all of a sudden my monitor just went black. The computer was still on, I could hear it. I cut everything off, switched in another monitor, and the same thing happened. As soon as i turn the computer on, both monitors displayed "check connection cable." I would have expected it to be the monitor...but when it says that on both, well then i think its gotta be something else. The temperature in my comp isnt hot and all the fans are running. I pulled the vid card out to check for any kind of damage and I see none.

I run win xp
ati 9700 pro
cpu 2.8 gz
1k ram

really have no clue what the issue is, I cant even see windows loading cause both monitors go black ... >.<

Hello,

I purchased a Dell XPS notebook Aug 2005. I am having problems with my screen. When I boot up the black background behind Dell displays vertical rows of blue dots all the way across screen. Then when it show the Window's screen booting up, it displays vertical rows of green dots. Right before the Wiindow screen changes, it show all different colors then entire screen is black. I can hear it in the background so it is booting up. I called Dell (hard to get service on a Sunday) and one person says I need the LCD replaced. Yesterday one said the motherboard. I'm a little confused because I am running in safe mode right now and the screen works fine. Has anyone had this occur. I'd like to figure out before they come out and replace my screen and that's not the problem. I'm looking at about $700 to have them come to my office!!! Also, why are their parts going out so soon??? My laptop has sat on my desk for 2 years!

Here are my specs:
Inspiron XPS-Gen2, Pentium M 770, 17", I GB, DDR2,533MHz 2 Dimm, 256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 Ultra, 80GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive

Thanks in advance,
MonaE

A:Black monitor

If the display is corrupt before booting into WIndows, then it has nothing to do with any drivers. A bad video controller or memory and the only cure is motherboard replacement.

You don't sound like someone able to replace the LCD or motherboard anyway, so you should just take the machine to a (Dell) repair shop and let them figure out what is broken and what to replace.

Ask for a price estimate first. It may be cheaper to get a new laptop

Hi!

I have a networked HP computer with XP Pro, service pack 3 with a Samsung Syncmaster 920nw monitor.

As soon as the computer is turned on the monitor comes on for about a second, then goes black. If you turn the monitor off, then back on again it works again for about a second before going to black again.

The power light stays solid blue (if the computer goes to sleep or is turned off it blinks.) It logs into Windows fine, even though it's a pain to do even that because you have to shut the monitor off & turn it back on repeatedly to do anything, and gives no error messages or anything like that. Power-saver is set to never turn monitor off or go to sleep (that seemed to work for a few hours yesterday even though it doesn't seem to be the problem since it's going off after mere seconds instead of minutes or hours, but today it's not working again.)

I've checked connections & they're fine.

Any ideas what might be causing it?

A:Monitor Going Black

Tried the monitor on another computer to see if the trouble follows? That way you can rule out that it's the monitor and not within the machine. In other words isolate the condition to either the monitor or computer.

Hi, i have bought a Diamond Stealth Radeon 9250 256mb PCI graphics card.
After i disabled my onboard graphics card , just like the manual said, i connected my samsung syncmaster 700df monitor ( i know it sucks :[ ) to my graphics card, but when i turned on my computer , my monitor was black, but my computer was running fine. When i connected the monitor back to my onboard it turned back on.

I am not really sure what the problem is.. I am sure I have everything for the system require for the graphics card EXCEPT super vga compatible or dvi-i compatible which i do not what it means.

I would really like help :]... Thank you
-------- Edit --------

I would like to know how to find out if your monitor is super vga compatible or not..

A:My monitor goes black

Did you install the Daimond Stealth's drivers? You probably have to lower or raise the vertical refresh rate

Ok heres my problem... Whenever I play a game thats requires some power, my monitor turns black or the game freezes anywhere from 5-60min after I start playing. I have no choice but to reset by hitting the button when this happens. When the screen goes black there is no sound in the background and the light on the monitor is still green. This all started since I upgraded my CPU and MB from a AMD 700MHz to a AMD 2400+ processor using the same Video Card.

I downloaded all the latest drivers for the vid card, got the latest direct x, the latest bios version, latest 4in1 drivers, all the windows XP updates. Still non of this helped the problem.

I then considered that I had a heat problem with my video card so I installed a VGA cooler (card wasnt even close to hot after this, it was just warm) and it still happened.

Ive tried changing the refresh rates in my monitor, resolutions, various video options (antialiasing, fastwrite, AGP Mode, aperature size, etc) with no luck. Ive tried using different video drivers for nvidia (omega, etc). I still got an old Gateway ev910 monitor im using but I doubt its the monitor since the sound stops when it goes black. I found drivers for the monitor but the wizard wont install them because it says It couldnt find a better match for my hardware than the default one I had installed. Ive tried checking the RAM for errors, non found.

Im all out of ideas on this one please help if you can and post any ideas.

Hello hopefully someone can help me...Every time I try to play a video game on my computer or restart the monitor goes black. My computer is still on and the only way it seems to get the screen back is to keep turning the monitor off and on until it stays on. I've updated my drivers, changed my power settings but neither worked. This doesn't happen any other time I can go online, play the games that came with the computer but I've missed playing my disc games and nothing I do seems to work for me...any ideas???

Try adding a bit more info to your post here is a Guide to making a good Post/Thread

I'll guess and offer that you could have the monitor power saving set incorrectly.

Have you enabled this?
Right Click your mouse from the Desk top ==>Properties==>Display Properties==>Screen Saver==>Power==>Power Schemes==>Settings for Always On Power Scheme==> from the drop down boxes set all menus to "Never" power off?

... but its not :/
Well i have a NEC Multisync LCD1920NX and some serious problems with it.
it went fine for quite a half of a year but then the trouble began.

if there should be black color there is a kind of black-green( one black line , 1 green line , ... ) . it also occurs with other video cards so im quite sure the monitor is guilty. the "funny" thing is that this is not an alltime effect . it happens randomly. it started with only once a few days and it could be resolved by doing auto-contrast or auto-resize. that does not work anymore. now im happy if i get a moment with normal colors :/

i even tried to look inside and checked a few cables but im not very expert with that. in fact checking the cable connections was all i could do.

hope anyone couldgive me a hint correcting this.
and excuse my bad english plz

A:it should be black ...[monitor]

I have the same problem, except it comes on blue...it has been suggested the blue gun needs repair, but new monitors are tamper proof as I understand it, with good reason, you can be zapped with over 50K volts if touching wrong spot, nope, not prudent.

My workaround is to leave the monitor on all the time. Just reread your post and noticed it is an LCD, don't know if above advice is valid. Still, if you turn it off, try not doing so, couldn't hurt.

Does it do this while machine is powered up? Will snoop around, see if I can find you an answer or someone with more knowledge than I (I know, hard to envision, but is possible, hehe) will come along and give you a better answer.

Let us know what you come up with

Hi all,
my roommate is having a monitor problem. it will be working OK, then the monitor gives the "no signal" message. He has opened the case and re-seated properly the video card. I am going to go over to my storage space tomorrow and get a monitor, so we can switch them out and see if the new monitor works OK.
Any suggestions on how to proceed, other than trying other monitor?

Please Help. I can't find anything but the problem is bizarre and only occurs when starting up normally. My monitor never goes black in "Safe Mode" and the monitor works perfectly when attached to another computer.

When I start up my computer normally the monitor will be fine for the first 10 minutes or so and then the system starts to freeze temporarily and then right after the monitor will go black for a couple of seconds. The problem becomes increasingly worse over the next 10 minutes when the monitor becomes permanently lost by the computer and I am no longer able to see what my computer is doing until I turn it off and reboot starting the above process all over again.
Here are the specs for my computer:
System

Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP
Operating System Version: 5.1
Software Update: Service Pack 2
OS Build: 2600

System Bios Version: Nvidia - 42302e31
Bios Date: 05/20/04
Video Bios Date: 11/17/03

Also, a few days ago I ran Malware Bytes and it found a "Services.exe" problem that it eliminated along with some other issues. I've attached that log as well.

When I went to turn my PC on today, the monitor was black.  All the connections seemed okay.  Went to Best Buy tonight to buy new monitor, but that's not working either.  What could it be?  With the old monitor, I heard my PC start up,  but since installing the new one, I hear nothing. HELP!

A:Monitor went black

Well if you don't hear the computer start up, there's a problem in the computer itself, not the monitor. When you say hear it startup, what did you hear that you're no longer hearing? Power supply fan, POST confirmation beep, Windows startup sound? Do any power lights come on? If not, have you checked if there is a master power switch on the back of the computer that has been bumped off, or the mains plug come loose in the socket? What brand and model is the computer?

Hi. So I'm sorta new at all this and I was wondering if there was a problem with my computer or if my monitor just has blown fuses. Occasionally (2 to 4 times a week) after logging on my monitor blacks out and it will automatically restart. If it doesn't restart and you push the button the monitor to turn the screen back on it will refuse to turn back on and will eventually restart after pressing the button about eight or nine times. Is this a virus problem or just the monitor?

Much thanks

A:Monitor Black Out

Sounds like the monitor, do you have another monitor to test? Also, can you test that monitor on another computer?

Did you mean you ran Ad-aware? It shouldn't have affected the monitor. See if the monitor cable is loose. Try another monitor if you have another one to see if it will work.

Hi there.

I have a strange issue. I installed W10 recently and everything works fine now. However, I found something pretty strange in my screen monitor. The problem is last horizontal lines are in pure black ? just as if there wasn't anything. For example, when you minimize a window, it displays in the Windows bar with a blue/cyan line. In my case, I cannot see that. It is very uncomfortable when watching a movie in fullscreen mode, for instance. Nevertheless, if I take a screenshot, it displays that part of the image perfectly.

I suspect it is a problem of drivers. However, I have my Nvidia card updated...

My monitor is: Acer AL1916W. It is connected via VGA.
